TOP TIPS

Dare we mutter... 'declutter' First off, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Take it easy, be kind to yourself and tackle categories one at a time rather than the whole house in one. Take absolutely everything out of the space you’re organising, take a deep breath and don’t panic at what will no doubt look like utter chaos! Trust me, this is how it’s supposed to look... this is good! Create groups of things by placing items together, then go through each group and put everything in either yes, no or unsure piles. Have a plan of what to do with the items in the no pile (donate, give away, put in storage or sell) and take them out of the house as soon as possible. If you don’t, the items have a cheeky way of working their way back into the cupboards! Organise the yes piles in your cupboards, buying storage containers if necessary to help keep it neat and tidy. This is a great time to really store your things properly so that you keep control over what you have and where it is. Use labels, labels and more labels... so everything has a home and can easily be found and stored away again. Put the unsure pile somewhere out of sight and if you don’t miss the items they will naturally work their way out of the house. Or maybe give them a little push! HOUSE TO HOME | 04

Pimp my tree. Oh, go on... Baubles are making a comeback! Did they ever really go away? H2H spoke to Interiors guru Jane Briggs, a style expert at Alexander James Interiors for expert advice on how to insta-style your tree this Christmas. FAKE IT | "If you buy a real tree, they dry out too quickly because of underfloor heating, central heating and open fires. Try to buy with the lights already involved in it because it's so much easier, with the lights distributed correctly. If you put your own lights on the tree, you have the wires and lights everywhere to deal with." BE MORE BALLSY | "Try not to buy items that are too little. They just blend in and you don't see them. You need some good sized, larger baubles. Then you add in the little interesting bits you've collected over the years." ODD IS GOOD | "If you're doing any colour, it is always best to do odd numbers. So do three, or five, or seven, different colours." MATCHY | "Pull in the colours of the room. This makes the whole look balanced and the tree well dressed."
