By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

As the sun returned to Bradford for perhaps the last full weekend this year, thousands of sun dwellers embarked on City Park to partake in the third annual Positive Bradford event. Set up in 2011 to celebrate everything good about the city, the day played host to tens of acts from Punjabi dancers to opera singers, jiu-jitsu performers to cheerleaders. Local businesses also had stalls spread across the Park, including the likes of the National Media Museum and a number of local charities. Jane Vincent, co founder and director of Positive Bradford, was thrilled to see the event draw in such a large crowd and explained how the whole initiative came about. “Today has just been absolutely fantastic,” she said. “We actually came up with the idea about two years ago. Saleem [Kader] and I both have business in Bradford and we heard on the television and the radio that Bradford was the least safe city in the country to visit and we just couldn’t believe it. “We both said look, we need to start doing something. Instead of just taking it, we need to stand up for ourselves. “What we have done is bring together communities, education, businesses, PR, marketing and the arts, to do a showcase of all the great things that are going on in the city and say ‘look everybody, we might not be perfect, no city is, but look at the great things we have got’. “This is the third time we’ve done it and we are absolutely packed, we had a waiting list of people, a multi-cultural stage full of events, it’s great.” Fellow co-founder and director, Saleem Kader, added: “This is Bradford based businesses and individuals telling people what is great about the city. “It is amazing, look at the day today. If you go through the crowd you will see people from all different backgrounds and nationalities just enjoying themselves. “It is all about getting people together and that is why people are here. Let’s forget about all the things we may not have, and focus on the things we have.”

GROUP: Team Bramhope ready to tackle the Three Peaks

Three Peaks conquered Team Bramhope complete rigorous 12 hour trek Front page story continued

PEAK: Trekkers at the top of the last peak, Ingleborough

In preparation of the day, Mr Qadeer had arranged a number of ‘training walks’ yet nothing could quite prepare the ramblers for what they were about to tackle. No representatives had done such a strenuous walk before and despite a lot of aching muscles, every person completed it and helped raise thousands of pounds for the charities. Mr Qadeer is an avid fundraiser, most recently completing the Leeds half marathon in May this year, yet he explained how this latest challenge was a completely new venture for all involved. He said: “We set off walking at 8am in the village of Horton in Ribblesdale and the first peak we did was Pen-y-Ghent. “All three peaks are nearly 2,400 feet high but the climb

basically starts as soon as you come out of the car park and cross the road. “It looked beautiful but it wasn't that easy and we soon started to realise that walking the five-to-six miles to Otley and back wasn't enough preparation for this challenge. “But as a team we all kept each

other’s spirits high, supporting each other and working as a group, and eventually we all, as a team, managed to finish the walk in less than 12 hours. “We all completed the challenge without any major injuries or blisters, just stiffness, tiredness, and aches and pains on muscles we didn’t even know existed.” He added: “It was an amazing feeling, a great sense of achievement that we put ourselves through so much hardship for two very good causes and now we have done it.” The fundraising group, Team Bramhope, smashed their target of £1,500 and have so far raised more than £2,700, with donations continuing to pour in. If you would like to make a donation to the team please visit w w w. j u s t g i v i n g . c o m / Te a m Bramhope before the end of October.

Leeds active

Senior councillors will next week discuss ambitious plans to provide a further boost to the drive to make Leeds the most active big city in the country. At its meeting at Civic Hall on Wednesday 9th October, the council’s executive board will consider two major new proposals to place sport at the heart of the city’s aim to tackle health inequalities and raise levels of activity as part of the Olympic legacy in Leeds. The first of the proposals is a new overall five-year strategy for sport and active lifestyles which has been backed by all key stakeholders in the city and nationally by Sport England. The second is an unprecedented pilot project which could see up to 22 different national governing bodies significantly develop access to each of their sports in Leeds. Amanda Hutton jailed

GUILTY: Amanda Hutton appeared at Bradford Crown Court

‘Drink was more important to her than her child’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford mother, whose four-year-old child was found mummified in his cot two years after his death, has been jailed for 15 years. 43-year-old, Amanda Hutton, was deemed guilty by a jury at Bradford Crown Court, on the charges of manslaughter by gross negligence. She was sentenced on Friday 4th October. Her youngest child, Hamzah Khan, had a ‘grossly inadequate’ diet and died in 2009 yet the body was only discovered in September 2011 still in his cot at the family home in Bradford. Roger Thomas, the Recorder of Bradford, said Hutton had shown a “terrible failure to fulfil the most basic responsibility; in short starving Hamzah to death.” MUMMIFIED: Hamzah Khan’s body was found two years after his death

He added: “Your deviousness was to keep various agencies away from you and your children. Your wicked conduct has been displayed in such awful detail.” Hutton had denied manslaughter, insisting her son died of natural causes, but admitted five further charges of child neglect in regard to her other children aged between five and 13. Prosecuting barrister Paul Greaney QC stated during the case that Ms Hutton was an alcoholic and this was the defining factor in the neglect of her child. He said: “As the child wasted away, she (Hutton) did nothing but sit in her bedroom and drink vodka. “Drink was more important to her than her child - a terrible thing to say about a mother, but it's the truth.” Mr Greaney added that Hamzah’s body lay in a travel cot in his mother’s bedroom for almost two years. “It had become mummified, infested with insects and in part it became mouldy,” he said. “That child was wasting away and the failure to get medical help for him is simply unforgiveable. It was “blindingly obvious” that malnourishment killed Hamzah. “It is criminal that he never saw a doctor after he left hospital. The crime is Amanda Hutton’s and we invite you to return a guilty verdict accordingly,” Mr Greaney concluded. Hutton's eldest son, 24-year-old Tariq Khan, also admitted preventing Hamzah's burial and received a two-year jail sentence, suspended for two years.

Aqib Khan (18). Third-generation Pakistani, grew up in Bradford and attended Tong High School. Young actor whose 2010 screen debut was the feature film ‘West is West’. “There’s a really family atmosphere in Bradford; everyone is just so nice. Book features the immense contributions of immigrants in the city since the 1950s By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A revealing new book is set to challenge commonly held external perceptions of the much-maligned city of Bradford. ‘Changing Bradford: Exploring South Asian Heritage in Bradford’ presents a fresh perspective on the impact made by South Asian people on a city which has become known for racial tension and economic blight. Based on intergenerational interviews, including that of Asian Express Co-Founder and Managing Editor Andleeb Hanif, the publication showcases a broad range of people of South Asian heritage. It features housewives, factory workers, leading entrepreneurs and celebrities from the city and sheds light on the major contribution made to Bradford’s cultural, social and economic vitality since the 1950s. Material for ‘Changing

Bradford’ was gathered by young people from Manningham Youth Project and Impressions Gallery’s New Focus group through a series of oral history interviews. The project was led by the Consortia of Ethnic Minority Organisations (COEMO) in partnership with Impressions Gallery, Manningham Youth Project, and West Yorkshire Archive Service (Bradford) and has been supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Dr Mohammed Salam, Chief Executive COEMO commented: “Bradford is a place that stirs the emotions. “For those of us who live and work in Bradford, a different place emerges when we talk about the city; a place which is far from the media stereotype, and which reflects the creative passions, community spirit, business acumen and family values of its multicultural population. “We hope that, in a modest way, the publication of

‘Changing Bradford’ will contribute to the ongoing story of community cohesion and social inclusion in Bradford, opening up a fresh perspective on the city which has a rich and diverse heritage and culture that is deserving of greater recognition.” Fiona Spiers, Head of HLF Yorkshire and the Humber said: “The South Asian community has played a vital role in Bradford’s lively and varied character. By preserving the stories and memories of local community, the Changing Bradford project has helped to shed light on the wonderful tapestry of Bradford’s heritage.” The book will be launched at a special event, to be held in the Studio at Impressions Gallery, on 5th October and will be distributed to libraries, schools and community groups. An accompanying exhibition of photographic portraits from ‘Changing Bradford’ will be displayed in the Studio at Impressions Gallery, Bradford until 2nd November.

“We hope that, in a modest way, the publication of ‘Changing Bradford’ will contribute to the ongoing story of community cohesion and social inclusion in Bradford.” Dr Mohammed Salam, Chief Executive COEMO

A bold new exhibition, which illustrates Arab women’s love of sport, is getting some serious attention and breaking down cultural and gender stereotypes. Commissioned by Qatar Museums Authority, ‘Hey’Ya: Arab Women in Sport’, which runs until October 13th at the National Football Museum in Manchester, is an exhibition by the internationally renowned photographer Brigitte Lacombe and documentary maker Marian Lacombe. Hey’Ya, the title of the exhibition, is Arabic for Let’s Go reflecting the athletes’ energy and enthusiasm. The exhibition features a series of large-scale photographs of Arab sportswomen, from beginners to Olympians, from 20 different Arab countries, shown alongside videos by Marian Lacombe. The exhibition was conceived by Qatar Museums Authority to encourage more Arab girls to participate in sports and comes to Manchester as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture celebrations. The project was shot over a period of seven month starting in December 2011 when the Arab Games were held in Doha. With the support of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, Brigitte and Marian Lacombe were able to set up their own outdoor studio, working side by side, capturing the athletes practicing different sports ranging from Tae Kwon Do to swimming and equestrian. Amongst them were a number of Qatari girls, one of them Nada Mohamed Wafa, the first Qatari female swimmer to compete in the Olympic Games. Nada said: “I am proud to be featured in this amazing exhibition. “I enjoyed learning about UK culture last year when I competed in the London 2012 Olympic Games. UK Parliamentarians go vegan for Gandhi’s birthday By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A number of Members of Parliament decalred that are going vegan for Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, 2nd October, in honour of International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi, who was himself a strict vegetarian and wrote the book ‘The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism’, famously said: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. Indian politician Maneka Gandhi, who is backing PETA’s efforts, says, “The best way for individuals, government offices and businesses to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday is by not eating meat or dairy on the International Day of Non-Violence. Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of peace and compassion for all living beings is not just a message of ahimsa but an economic and ecological necessity.” The parliamentarians who will keep

meat off their platters include Former Olympics Minister Dame Tessa Jowell MP, Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, the Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party and a few others. The initiative suggested by PETA was received well with many MP’s stating that they were already vegetarians or vegans. PETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi commented: “By promoting animal-free foods, these politicians are sending a powerful message to their constituents about the importance of nonviolence towards all living beings – humans and other species alike. “If Gandhi were alive today, we’re sure that he’d be encouraged by the greatness of these public servants’ compassionate action.” PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is a UK-based charity dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals.

New £10 million ‘Anniversaries Fund’

The Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, announced this week that at least £10m would be set aside to fund projects marking some of the United Kingdom’s most important anniversaries and commemorative events. Over the next four years at least £10m of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) money will be invested to ensure that those moments which form a central part of our national history are commemorated and understood. Events such as the Diamond Jubilee, and the Olympic and Paralympics Games showed how events can bring the nation together. This new fund reflects the fact there is enormous enthusiasm to provide more opportunities to foster the sense of community spirit and national pride that such events can inspire. The funding will help to highlight important historical dates that will resonate with people and communities right across the UK. It reflects the British people’s appreciation of the significance of their country’s unique history and the potential for the marking of anniversaries to encourage feelings of national pride and a sense of unity. BUILDING: Iqra Academy in Manningham, Bradford

Celebrated Bradford school becomes Academy

Iqra Academy’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

OPEN: Bradford Lord Mayor Councillor Khadim Hussain officially opens the latest addition of the Iqra Academy

A Bradford Primary school, which was all but destroyed following a devastating arson attack a decade ago, is now celebrating becoming an academy amid a host of other awards. The Iqra Academy, in Manningham, was named ‘Primary School of the Year’ by the Times Educational Supplement in 2012 and held a special ceremony last week to celebrate becoming an academy. Rated as Outstanding in every aspect in the latest OFSTED report, the school has been a success story for the local area since opening their doors in 2000. Students and teachers took part in an assembly, documenting the history of the school and providing entertainment through a special dance performance. Bradford Lord Mayor,

Khadim Hussain, was also present alongside members of the school board and parents, to perform the official ribbon cutting of the latest addition to the school premises. Parwaiz Bashir, Chair of the school, was delighted to see how far the school had progressed and hopes the success will continue for the foreseeable future. He said: “Today is another part of the journey where we can now decide on how we can continue to improve and do the best we can for our children. The children have already said that we might become an all-through school (primary and secondary) and that is something we will seriously look at. “As an academy it gives us control from the council where we can now direct from within the school. In all honesty, the council are not responsible for us getting to this fantastic position; it’s the teachers and the head

teacher in particular that has taken us to where we are so as an Academy it gives us a bit more freedom.” The Lord Mayor was also full of praise for the establishment and the proud history. “Looking at the tragic incident (arson attack) and the resilience they’ve shown, the community dedication, staff, councillors, they’ve all worked to make it a fantastic establishment which it is today. “In order to succeed you need to have leadership within the school and within the home, and kids need someone who can inspire them, push them, and raise their expectations. Here at the Iqra Academy we have those things and that is why the school is labelled ‘Outstanding’.” He added: “The presentation given today is a clear vision of where the governing body want the school to go and I believe they have all the right skills to achieve what they want.”

Rules tightened over scrap metal dealers Laws controlling the collection and sale of scrap metal are being tightened as part of a crackdown on thieves. New legislation is due to come into force giving local councils far greater control over licensing scrap metal dealers and motor salvage operators. Dealers will also have to keep details of where any metal comes from, and to whom it is sold. It is part of a move to end scrap metal theft which costs the national economy between £220 million and £777 million a year and has seen everything from copper wiring in power cables to inspection hatch covers and war memorial plaques being removed and sold.

Previously scrap metal dealers only had to register with the council, and motor salvage operators had only to hold a simple licence. From 1st October , 2013, both types of dealers will now have to be licensed under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. They will need to obtain either a site licence costing £520 or a collector's licence costing £319 from the local authority in whose area they want to operate. Site licences will have to be displayed at each licensed site, and collector's licences must be displayed on any vehicle being used by the business. The new law also introduces tighter controls on how scrap metal

Chaired by Sir John Tusa, until recently Chair of University of the Arts, London, the panel also includes choreographer Siobhan Davies, theatre director and actor Simon McBurney, composer Jocelyn Pook and filmmaker Sally Potter. Mr Khan, Artistic Director of Akram Khan Company, says: “I am very excited about the new partnership with UAL and looking forward to sharing challenging sessions with the students. I am confident that these young creators in the making and our guest artists will nurture one another throughout the year. “The arts allow us to think differently, and that’s what we are doing here with this new chapter in the Company’s journey. dealers operate. They must keep accurate records of any scrap metal they receive or sell, covering where it came from and who they sold it to, as well as a detailed description of the items they receive. Most importantly, dealers will now have to verify the identity of anyone giving them scrap metal, and keep copies of any documents they use for this purpose. It will also now become illegal for scrap metal dealers to pay cash for scrap metal. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers act 2013, councils will be the main regulators of the scrap metal and motor salvage trades, and will have the power to refuse licences or revoke existing ones if they consider the dealer to be unsuitable. The new legislation comes into effect on 1st October, and from 1st December councils will be able to use enforcement powers against dealers who aren't properly licensed.

October 2013 - 1st Edition Author: Shakeel Aziz with his book, ‘Dons of Bradistan’

Local author releases hardhitting debut book

Dons of

Bradistan By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A university graduate from Keighley has turned his own life around to become a selfpublished author following eight years of living in a ‘gang’ culture. Shakeel Aziz, 30, left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications yet after escaping his turbulent lifestyle five years ago, the Yorkshireman has now written his first book, entitled ‘Dons of Bradistan’. The fictional novel follows the story of Nasser Ali, a teenager from Bradford who falls into the wrong crowd and becomes exposed to a notorious gang culture. After being sent to Pakistan for bad behaviour, the teenager returns years later with a mysterious parcel which is about to send his life into utter turmoil. The story uncovers the youth's hardship, regret and turmoil as he becomes entangled in crime, gangs and criminal activity, all while dealing with social issues such as racism, identity crisis and cultural confusion. Author, Shakeel, who graduated from Bradford University last month with a BA Honours degree in Peace Studies and Politics, hopes the novel will not only entertain its readers but act as a warning about the dangers of such a notorious

lifestyle. He said: “When I began writing initially in 2011 my idea was to do a self help book for teenagers. The aim was to provide guidance for the younger generation, specifically Asian Muslims, and highlight the dangers of gangs and a criminal lifestyle. “However, after starting the book I realised that teenagers, and the wider society never really engage in 'Do's and Dont's' books so I developed it into an action crime thriller nonfiction. “Looking at my own life experiences and reflecting on others I have spoken with during youth work, it gave me the ability to write the book in a way which is reflective of the truth and also spreads an important message. “The underlying aim is to highlight how small misguided decisions can wreak havoc in a young person's life, whilst abandoning education is a hugely dangerous decision. “That’s how Dons of Bradistan became the gritty, hard hitting tale which it is, taking the reader into the surreal world of young Nasser.” The book is now available for purchase on Amazon, whilst a second novel, exploring the world of grooming, is currently in production and will hopefully be released in the near future.

HACKED s g n i n r Wa e s i r r ove l i a m e in s r e k c ha

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A local businesswoman is warning people about the dangers of email hackers after falling victim to the crime last week. Yasmin Ahmed, owner of the Beauty Hut, Bradford, had her work email accessed by an unauthorized third party on Monday 16th September and was subsequently locked out of the account. Now she is hoping to raise awareness of the incidents and protect vulnerable people from succumbing to the fraudulent requests. Ms Ahmed was made aware of her situation after receiving an email on her personal account from her business one. “It said it was urgent so I knew immediately that something wasn’t quite right,” she explained. “I opened it up and it said ‘I’m

stuck in Cyprus, lost my phone and wallet etc, can you loan me £2,500, reply via email and I’ll tell you where to put it in’. “I couldn’t access my Beauty Hut account so knew I had been hacked and then the phone calls began. “I must have had over a dozen clients call me and even more texts asking if I’m okay because my whole contacts list saved to my account had received this same email.” Ms Ahmed only uses the business account to send out emails to clients regarding special offers and did not store any bank details or invoices. However, this was not the main worry for the beautician who was more concerned about the recipients of the emails. She said: “There will be people in my contacts, and in others, that don’t understand the dangers of hackers like these and therefore may

• Divorces based on unreasonable behaviour, desertion and separation • The validity of religious marriages, such as a Nikkah, and of divorces, such as Talaqs and Khul'as • Nullity applications • Children applications for residence, contact and prohibited steps orders • Domestic violence issues and non molestation orders • Injunctions • Ancillary financial relief matters

believe the content in the emails to be real. “I hope that my incident and the rising number of cases can help raise the awareness of this problem and ensure no innocent people are left out of pocket.” The beautician had a strong password on her account, made up of 15-16 characters, including letters and numbers, yet was still hacked. Despite a number of attempts to change her password and regain access to the email, all efforts have proved futile. A statement on behalf of the Trading Standards authority warned all email users to be wary of such scams and be wary of any email requesting the transfer of funds. It read: “Names and other details differ depending on whose webmail account the scammers have hijacked, as do the countries where the “friend” is supposedly

stranded. The amounts of money requested in the messages may also differ. “In spite of such superficial differences, all such messages are versions of the same basic scam. Sadly, some people have become victims of this scam and lost money to these criminals. “As usual be wary of any email that you receive that asks you to send money, even if the message appears to come from a friend. Moreover, users of webmail should make sure that their account details are as secure as possible, and be wary of possible phishing scams designed to steal their webmail account details. “Many people may have several webmail accounts, some of which are not often used. Thus it is a good idea to check all webmail accounts regularly to ensure that they have not been compromised and sending out scam email or spam that could appear to be from you.”

In these unfortunate circumstances you need someone you can trust and rely on. This is where I come in. I handle all cases with utmost sensitivity to ensure your privacy is respected and your legal rights protected. I can assist clients in English, Urdu, Punjabi or Hindi. If you have any legal worries relating to any family matters then it is worth having a chat with me: you have nothing to lose and possibly a lot to gain.

Bradford trekker looks to visit every Mosque

83 mosques, 1 Muslim By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford man is hoping to visit every mosque in the city after rediscovering his passion for Islam and has further plans to document his journey. 29-year-old Aminur Chowdhury, from Manningham, decided to take on the challenge of visiting all of the city’s 83 mosques before the New Year in hope of celebrating his chosen faith. Having worked for a recruiting agency in the past, the former Bradford Grammar School graduate will be aiming to complete the journey independently to highlight the ease of access to faith in the city. He said: “This adventure of mine is all about purity, all about humility and all about beauty. It is to highlight just how far back the Asian community in Bradford goes in setting up great things such as mosques. “Three weeks ago I hadn’t visited any mosque for a long time, but when my friend and I saw young men handing out leaflets about the prayer, it made me realise how much of a communal thing religion is. “People should be aware that there are so many of these ‘places of worship’ in our city and if I can highlight that to Muslims, hopefully more of them will realise they can attend. “This is not about fundraising

I’m sure councillors may have visited all of these remarkable establishments yet I don’t want to do it because it is my job, I want to do it to experience the different Mosques and worships.” Mr Chowdhury visited Marrakesh a couple of years ago and said this experience was also a reminder of the importance of faith in communities. “When I visited Morocco the

experience I felt there was amazing. I was overcome with spirituality and wanted to feel this way back home in England. Everybody was united in their ways when the call to prayer was made and it was great to see. “If people in the UK can just understand how easy it is for them to visit one of these remarkable buildings, it would be fantastic for the community.”

Recycling work begins

Construction workers are moving in to the Cross Green industrial estate this week to start work on the city’s new recycling and energy facility. The east Leeds site is set to become a hive of activity as the work begins to lay the site roads and start piling works. Between now and the end of the year, a tower crane will arrive on site, ground stabilisation works will be completed and excavation to make way for key parts of the building will start. The council’s partner Veolia who will run the facility for 25 years, have appointed Clugston to build it.

www.asianexpress.co.uk As speculation mounts that the Government plans to create 500,000 extra school places to cope with demand, UK Immigration Barristers investigates the impact of immigration on schools. Rising birth rates and rising immigration numbers have been described as the fundamental factors behind increasing pressure on schools as they take on more pupils every year. A spokesperson from UK Immigration Barristers said: “Rising birth rates and UK immigration go hand-in-hand. The more people that arrive from overseas add to the population and those settled here go on to have families. The major factor to consider is that families from some nations tend to have larger families than those that make up the ‘native’ UK population.” In a statement from the Department for Education (DfE), they said: “Under the proposals, we expect that 500,000 new school places will be introduced between 2015 and 2021 and we estimate the cost to be somewhere in the region of £7.5 billion.” Much has been made about the impact of UK immigration on public services, including schools, with much of the storm circulating in the national press. According to the Commons Public Accounts Committee, 250,000 of the 500,000 proposed spaces need to be created by September 2013 alone. Concerns across the education sector include: overcrowded classes, compromising education quality, the number of pupils that

The bigger worry is that, in order to accommodate pupils, ‘brighter’ children could end up at schools deemed to be ‘failing’. However, regardless of the political wrangling on the subject of immigration a number of educational peers do agree that the biggest impact affects the children and ethnicity should not deny a child the right to a quality education.” The underlying issue now, according to the Commons Public Accounts Committee, is how local councils will react. ‘brighter’ children could end up at schools deemed to be ‘failing’. Furthermore, schools fear a loss of resources including facilities such as libraries and sports halls as schools will have to transform such facilities into classrooms in order to accommodate a surge in student numbers. Walk to school week

As part of national Walk to School week, from the 7th to 11th October, Wakefield Council is holding a special ‘Horrible Histories week’ which will see children get active and the past come to life. Junior and Infant Schools across Wakefield will step back in time on their morning journey to promote an active and healthy lifestyle and to reduce congestion around schools. Park and stride facilities have been set up at schools across the district where parents are encouraged to park away from the school gate and walk with their children to school. This promotes walking as a healthy activity and creating a safe no care zone around the school site. For more information please visit www.wakefield.gov.uk/schooltravel

Firework safety

Residents are being asked to play their part in keeping the district safe as Bonfire Night approaches. Bradford Council is working in partnership with the police, the fire service and the district's largest social landlord, Incommunities, to solve bonfire season problems before they can get out of hand. They also want people to help the campaign and report dangerous bonfires which can be dealt with immediately. The district's traders are being warned not to try and take advantage of the season by illegally dumping their rubbish on bonfires. Bradford Council’s Wardens and Neighbourhood staff are working with the police and fire service in a bid to stamp out any problems before they arise.

recognition for legal Luke Luke Patel, Partner in Commercial Dispute Resolution at Leeds-based Blacks Solicitors LLP, was named the ‘Best Professional in Business’ at the annual English Asian Business Award ceremony last week. Each year, hundreds of businessmen and women from across the UK come together to celebrate the English Asian Business Awards– an event designed to honour Asian men and women at the forefront of their industries. Unlike other industry accolades, the awards are based on nominations alone, so those who are shortlisted have been selected based on feedback and recognition from their peers. Over 100 candidates were recommended for the ‘Best Professional in Business’ award, which was then shortlisted to just six. Luke’s high profile work with the Supreme Court which attracted national and international publicity was just one the reasons why he scooped this prestigious award. Commenting on his award, Luke Patel said, “I feel so

privileged and honoured that all the hard work I have done in recent years especially on the high profile cases has been recognised. Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate me for this award.” Managing Partner at Blacks Solicitors, Chris Allen added: “Luke ‘the Litigation Lion’ as he’s wellknown at the firm really deserves this recognition. He has a fantastic profile within the Asian business community and we’re all very proud of his achievement.”

Tackling abuse through music

Young people aim to tackle domestic abuse in teenage relationships

FILM: A music video has been produced by Bradford’s youths

Local

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Young people in Bradford are using film, photography and music to raise awareness of domestic abuse as an issue amongst their peers. A music video entitled ‘STUCK in Chains’, which will be available on You Tube, has been written, filmed and produced by young people. They identified domestic abuse within young people’s relationships as an issue that affects them but which can go unnoticed or unchallenged. The video addresses the impact of domestic abuse from the point of view of young people, through rap music and film, and highlights where young people can find help and support. It will be launched during Bradford’s Safeguarding Week on Monday, 30 September at 5.30pm. The launch event will include a screening of the video, live performance of the track, and speeches by young people involved in the project. The initiative has been supported by Bradford Council’s Youth Service and Bradford Safeguarding Children Board. Nola O’Neill, Bradford Council Youth Worker, said: "We really hope that this video and track will reach out to young people who are on the receiving end of an abusive relationship, or who are hurting someone they love, and encourage them to talk to someone they trust and seek help.” Jason Baker, who co-wrote the lyrics and co-performs, said: "We want young people who are victims of abuse in relationships to know where to go for support. We want them to feel better knowing that they are not alone and that there are people who can relate to them and who care. "We want to spread our message through music because people listen to music all the time and it can influence how they think.” A number of national surveys highlight the

impact that domestic abuse can have in young people’s relationships, the wide variety of ways in which it can take place, and that it often goes unreported. Conor Butler, who directed the video, said: "My passion for filming and music meant that when the opportunity to get involved with the STUCK project came about I jumped at the chance to do something different with a serious subject matter. "During researching for STUCK I spoke to people and watched a lot of related videos, learning what people go through. This got to me emotionally, and I feel good that the video we have produced will raise awareness and really help people.” The video will be available to organisations such as schools and youth clubs to raise the issue of relationship abuse between young people as part of discussions in a supportive environment. Sofia Tsanou, who sings on the track, said: "We want young people to understand there are different types of abuse in relationships, it’s not just physical, there is emotional abuse as well. "Understanding emotions is hard, and we all need to know how to talk about them. Being close to someone can bring up lots of complicated feelings, no matter what type of relationship you are in. "Whatever your situation, find a positive outlet for your feelings, don’t hurt others or yourself.” Nick Frost, Independent Chair of Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "Domestic violence can blight young people’s lives, and it can seem very hard to escape. This brave music video is a creative way of raising the issue amongst young people, and also gives the message that help is at hand for them, and it is a cycle they can break.” Cllr Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: "This is a very difficult issue which these young people have taken on, and they deserve great credit for getting this important message out there. The use of the music video in schools and in youth services will hopefully give other young people a greater understanding of this issue and where they can get help if it affects them.”

A Taste of America

Check the fine print re you sick of junk mail through your letterbox, spam in your email inbox and salesmen armed with clipboards harassing you in the street all wanting you to sign up to a new credit card? Over in Russia a gentleman named Dmitry Agarkov was particularly unhappy with another unsolicited offer of credit. Mr Agarkov was so appalled upon reading the small print that the real interest rate was 45 per cent, despite the bank’s advertisement offering a rate of 12.9 per cent. Rather than just bin the offending proposal Mr Agarkov scanned the paperwork into his computer and made some amendments to the terms and conditions of the agreement. Mr Agarkov opted for an unlimited line of credit, a 0 percent interest rate and no fees, adding that the customer "is not obliged to pay any fees and charges imposed by bank tariffs." Agarkov also changed the URL of the site where the terms and conditions were published and hedged against the bank’s breaking of the agreement. For each unilateral change in the terms provided in the agreement, the bank would be asked to pay Mr Agarkov $91,000, or a cancelation fee of $182,000. Mr Agarkov’s amended contract was, alarmingly, accepted and he received a credit card. After two years of use, the bank took the decision to terminate Mr Agarkov’s credit card because of overdue payments. The bank duly sued Mr

Agarkov for $1,363 reflecting the remaining balance, fees and late payment charges, all of which violated the original agreement. Earlier this summer a Russian judge declared that the agreement that Agarkov had concocted was valid and all that he should pay to the bank was his outstanding balance, a mere $575. As the bank had signed the document (clearly without reading the contents of it) they were legally bound by it. Customers are always told to read the fine print, no more so in cases where banks face complaints from customers regarding their terms and conditions. In this instance it would have been prudent for the bank to take their own advice. Not content with his day in Court Mr Agarkov is suing the bank for $730,000 (24-million-ruble) based upon his amended version of the original agreement. The bank’s owner Oleg Tinkov is bullish about the situation and has been quoted recently on Twitter as saying: “Our lawyers think, he is going to get not 24 million, but really four years in prison for fraud. Now it’s a matter of principle for @ tcsbank.” The next hearing is due to take place before Christmas and I will keep you updated as the case evolves. If you feel you have suffered professional negligence at the hands of a financial institution than do not hesitate to contact me.

Ali Baba A Bradford Institution

20 years of South Asian arts Milestone celebrations to receive celebrity touch O

I

f you are a citizen of Bradford, you will have heard of, passed or even bought something from Ali Baba Carpets & Furniture. With its classic trademark of a man on a flying carpet, Ali Baba Carpets has been doing business in Bradford for the last 40 years and continues to be a leader in the furniture industry. Providing top quality furnishings for every taste, it is a one stop shop for making a house a home with thousands of products all under one roof. Whether it is a sofa or a bed, wardrobes or lighting, the store on Great Horton Road, Bradford, will have it in stock for you to take away today. Need help with delivery? No problem. Ali Baba offer free delivery to all homes in Bradford with every item guaranteed to arrive within two weeks of purchase. The business was founded by Mr F.D. Farooqi, who came to Britain and settled in Bradford in 1964. The enthusiastic businessman started off by working shifts in a Foundry, and then as a waiter in a Restaurant, before saving up enough money to open his own eatery, on Leeds Road, Bradford, known as the Commonwealth Restaurant. Iconic figures, political and from the Asian film industry, frequently visited the establishment for its genuine homecooked fare, (Mrs Farooqi, her daughter, and her daughter-in-law). Largely a self-taught man, Mr Farooqi, hosted Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto, and in later years, Begum Nusrat Bhutto. Having run a very successful restaurant, Mr Farooqi, then turned to try his hand at selling carpet remnants, off cuts of wallpaper, paints, and off cuts of linoleum. Aided by his sons, this business grew from a shop in Leeds Road, which is now being run by his daughter and her husband, to the large warehouse on Great Horton Road. Mr Farooqi, in his eighties, decided to

try his hand at another business. After handing over Ali Baba Carpets, which incidentally sells three-piece-suites, beds, bedroom units, dining and lounge furniture as well as carpets and all manner of floor coverings, to his sons, the avid entrepreneur opened Ali Baba Lighting. Again this business thrived and has proven to be the final venture for Mr Farooqi who finally, after much encouragement, decided to retire at the age of 93. His two sons, Iqbal and Bilal, are now also reaching retirement age, and the business is about to be passed on to the third generation of the Farooqi Family, and the grandson of the remarkable Mr Farooqi. The Farooqi family has shown how an immigrant family, by working hard, can be successful and contribute to the well-being of the community and the local economy. We should all be proud of this family business, long may it continue.

Funerals of neurosurgeon’s wife and three children won’t happen until second post-mortem The father of three children who were killed in a house fire along with his wife has said their funerals will not take place until a second postmortem examination is completed. Shehnila Taufiq, 47, her daughter Zainab, 19, and two sons Bilal, 17, and 15-year-old Jamil, died in the blaze at their home on Wood Hill in Leicester on Friday September 13. Dr Muhammad Taufiq Al Sattar, who is currently staying with friends in the city, says he does not know when he will be able to bury his family due to the investigation into their deaths. The four family members died after their home was set alight on 13 September. The 52-year-old neurosurgeon told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that second postmortem examinations on members of the family had been delayed until at least 8th October. He said the last fortnight had been “extremely difficult” for him, but added his faith in Islam had given him strength. “It was God’s plan to take the life,” he said. Police have charged 18-year-old Kemo Porter, of Browning Street, Leicester with murder over the fire, which began shortly after midnight in Leicester's Wood Hill. He was remanded in custody at Leicester Magistrates' Court. Further arrests have also been made in connection

One of the world’s fastest growing airlines, announced that it is to launch services to Sialkot, its fifth route to Pakistan. The service will commence from 5th November 2013 with four weekly flights operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft in a two-class configuration - 54 seats in Business Class and 183 in Economy Class. The aircraft can carry up to 17 tonnes of cargo, giving a boost to trade opportunities. “Pakistan was the first country on our route network when we launched services to Karachi in 1985,” said Barry Brown, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Commercial Operations East. “With the addition of this fifth destination the airline will operate 63 flights a week between Dubai and

Pakistan. “Twenty eight years since our first flight, this new service to Sialkot continues to demonstrate the strong ties between the two countries and reinforces Dubai as a conveniently located hub for onward travel on Emirates’ network of 134 destinations. “Besides boosting global trade and economic opportunities, this new route will provide additional travel options to Pakistanis wanting to connect with friends, families and colleagues worldwide.” Sialkot is the capital of the Sialkot District located in the north-east of the Punjab province in Pakistan. He spoke about the moment he was at Dublin airport that he was told by police that his wife and three children had died in the fire. “As a neurosurgeon I know we deal with life and death every day so it was in my mind, something which is beyond your control.” Dr Taufiq said it had been too distressing for him to step foot in the family home, which was gutted by the fire. Dr Taufiq plans for his wife and children to be buried in Ireland, where he said he will continue to live and practice his faith.

The area is famous for producing and exporting sports goods and clothing, gloves, surgical instruments, cutlery, ceramics and leather garments, whilst imports to the region focus on the supply of raw materials for manufacturing those products. Sialkot International Airport, which opened in

2007, boasts the longest runway in Pakistan at 3,600 metres and was wholly funded by the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce. “As the first privately funded airport in Pakistan, we welcome Emirates’ decision to commence operations to the city,” said Sheikh Abdul Majid, President of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce. “Sialkot will be able to offer Emirates’ passengers another point of entry into

Pakistan in a modern, conveniently located and accessible airport.” Emirates flight EK620 will depart Dubai at 04:15 and arrive in Sialkot at 08:20 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Jail for landlord

A landlord, who fled the country in 1992 after killing a mother and son in an arson attack, has been jailed for 15 years. Faisal Latif, 44, was extradited from the United States to the UK earlier this year in connection with the deaths of Marilyn and Nicholas Cook in their rented home in Stoke-on-Trent. 40-year-old Ms Cook died in hospital just days after her son, Nicholas, was killed in the fire in Travers Street, Middleport, on the 9th April, 1992. 10 years later and justice was finally done at Stafford Crown Court where Latif pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter and 10 years for arson with intent to endanger life, to run concurrently.

Pay day loan fines

Tougher controls on payday lenders could see unlimited fines for companies which break the rules. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which will take over regulation of consumer credit from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in April 2014, said the sanctions were among a host of proposed new rules that would go out to consultation. The organisation, which will cover tens of thousands of firms offering services such as overdrafts, credit cards and debt advice, was formed six months ago with the promise of strengthening protection for consumers. Pay day loans were set up to aid people financially in the short term however; hidden charges and large interest rates have caused criticism in recent times.

Taliban appeal rejected

A former Taliban fighter who ran a ‘recruitment centre’ for home-grown extremists to go to Afghanistan to kill British troops has lost a conviction appeal. Three judges at the Court of Appeal in London rejected a challenge brought by Munir Farooqi, who was given four life sentences in September 2011 at Manchester Crown Court. Pakistani-born British citizen Farooqi, of Victoria Terrace, Longsight, was at the centre of a plot to radicalise and persuade vulnerable young men to ‘fight, kill and die’ in a jihad in Afghanistan. The father-of-three was captured in a police sting when two undercover antiterrorism police officers infiltrated his group wearing secret bugging devices.

Missing person search concludes

Murder squad detectives finished their huge search for the body of a missing mum last month after more than two months of meticulous searching. Rania Alayed, 25, from Cheetham Hill, was reported missing on the 2nd July, but was last seen in public on the 7th June in Salford. Police are convinced she has been killed, and have been searching a 19-mile stretch of the A19 at Thirsk, in Yorkshire, for her body. Her husband and his brother have been charged with her murder.

Two prisoners, found guilty of murdering a ‘model inmate’ earlier this year, have been told they will spend life behind bars. Gary Smith, 48, and Lee Newell, 44, were both handed whole-life sentences at Warwick Crown Court on the 23rd September for the murder of Huddersfield man, Subhan Anwar. The victim, who was serving a life sentence of 23 years after being convicted of the murder of his partner's two-year-old daughter, was strangled with his own tracksuit bottoms in his cell at HMP Long Lartin, near Evesham, on the 14th February. Smith and Newell did not appear in court and were addressed via a live stream by Mr Justice Jeremy Baker who said he believed Anwar did not resist because he thought he was being taken hostage. “One of the most chilling aspects of this case was the almost complete lack of emotion shown by either of you after the killing,” Mr Justice Baker said. “It is against this background that I have to consider whether the circumstances of this murder are such that it is one of those exceptional cases where its seriousness is of such magnitude so as to

require the making of a whole-life order. “In my judgment you have both murdered others before, on this occasion you did so in a cold-blooded manner, having deliberately lulled your victim into a false sense of security.” A family member spoke on behalf of Anwar’s family and uttered his disbelief at the events in the high security prison. He said: “What happened in Long Lartin on the evening of Thursday 14th February will never be forgotten, should never have occurred and should not be allowed to happen ever again. “Injustice was done to Subhan Anwar from the start. We, as a family, still believe he was wrongly

accused and sentenced for something he was innocent of. We believe there was no factual evidence in his case and he should not have been in prison. “Prisoners and prisoners’ families should never go through what we as a family are going through. They should not be living in fear on a daily basis in a top security prison or any prison in UK. “We as a family are devastated by this loss. Our lives will never be the same. We have received many condolences, cards, letters and even a collection from other prisoners in Long Lartin. They, like us, are in complete disbelief, shocked and saddened by how Subhan was killed by Smith and Newell.”

SENTENCED: Gary Smith and Lee Newell were sentenced at Warwick Crown Court

Sisters convicted after admitting to laundering brother’s money The sisters of convicted drug dealers have been sentenced after admitting money laundering offences. Surriya Bi, 33, and Asia Bi, 38, both of Park Road, Rochdale, admitted money laundering (to the value of £40k each) at an earlier hearing. At Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Tuesday 24th September 2013, Asia was jailed for 18 months and Surriya for 22 months. Under Proceeds of Crime Act legislation both women were also ordered to pay back £40,000 within six months or face a further 12 months in prison and still be liable for the payment. The two sisters have two brothers who are both convicted drugs dealers. The women aided their siblings’ by laundering money made from their drug

dealing. A thorough financial investigation was launched following the conviction of Mohammed Shafiq, 32 of Park Road brother of the defendants - who was jailed for six years in March 2011 for drugs offences. Specially trained officers reviewed the family’s accounts and discovered that each sister had purchased a house with large deposits. Surriya Bi bought a house on Park Road in December 2008 for £100k, paying a £40,000 deposit. She also owned an expensive car - a 2007 Audi A4 valued at £16,000 - that police have seized as part of the money laundering investigation. She also paid a 10 per cent deposit on a second house that she bought for £70k in November 2009 and had a collective

balance in her bank accounts of £7,000. Asia Bi paid a deposit of £20,000 on a house she bought on Roch Street for £67k in March 2005. She paid £36,000 off the mortgage between May 2007 and June 2008 and has more than £7,000 in several bank accounts. Detective Constable Gerard Fisher, said: “Between them these two sisters have laundered £80,000: money provided by their brothers and their associates from drug dealing activities. “This has been a long, drawn out inquiry that we first started in 2010. “Along the way we took out top and street level dealers. Now we have secured convictions against those not involved in the drug dealing directly, but who have benefited financially from it.”

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS ROYAL: Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum monarch of the Gulf Emirate and Britain's largest owner of racehorses

An illegal shipment of unlicensed veterinary goods which was seized from a Dubai government private jet at Stansted airport earlier this year, has led Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to launch an internal investigation into his equine operations. Thousands of pounds worth of unlicensed products which have been described as “potentially toxic and dangerous to horses”, were seized and destroyed by the UK Border Agency and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD)on 3rd May following the arrival of a Dubai Royal Air Wing flight. Sheikh Mohammed is monarch of the Gulf Emirate, as well as the owner of Godolphin, the country’s largest Flat racing operation. Her Highness Princess Haya, the sheikh’s junior wife and president of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, has been ordered to conduct a thorough investigation into the seizure at the airport. She’ll also be examining a separate raid by the VMD last month at Moorley Farm in Newmarket, a location owned by his Darley Management operation, where a number of similar products were found. Sheikh Mohammed has

shown that he ‘is extremely concerned’ at the development which comes only months after his Godolphin thoroughbred operation was rocked by the biggest doping scandal in racing history. A spokesman for Princess Haya has revealed that at this stage nobody in the organisation seems to know who is buying what or where. Keith Chandler, the president of the British Equine Veterinary Association, said some of the products seized at Stansted were potentially dangerous and should be “kept under lock and key in a safe.” The VMD stated that the medicines “were not authorised in the UK and had not been imported in accordance with the regulations.” Princess Haya's spokesman insisted that Sheikh Mohammed was unaware of the presence of the pharmaceuticals on the flight from Dubai on 3rd May or the raid at Moorley Farm until now. “I can assure you that Sheikh Mohammed was not aware of any such products in the cargo of any Dubai Royal Air Wing flight into Stansted on that date,” he said. It is the second time this year that Sheikh Mohammed's operations have been engulfed in controversy. In April the disgraced former Godolphin trainer Mahmood al-Zarooni was banned for eight years by the BHA after using anabolic steroids on 22 racehorses at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket. The BHA insists the Stansted seizure was not related to racing, citing assurances given by the VMD.

Sheikh Mohammed launches inquiry after drugs seized on jet Indian University breaks into top 250 The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings have been released and an Indian institution has broken into the top 250 for only the second time. The Panjab University is a new entrant to the THE rankings whilst the inclusion of four other Indian establishments in the top 400, signals India’s most successful performance so far. Indian Institutes of Technology from

Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Roorkee, make up the other four entrants, who were all clubbed in the 351-400 ranking. Phil Baty, editor of the THE World University Rankings, said: “These results should be encouraging for India. While no Indian institution makes the top 200, one player new to the rankings, Panjab University, is close in the 226-250 group.” He added: “Moreover, India now has five representatives in the top 400 - a sign of growing commitment to the global rankings.” Meanwhile, the California Institute of Technology retains its place at the top of the rankings for the third consecutive year, while Harvard University regained second place (up from fourth in 201213), a position shared with the UK's University of Oxford. Stanford University slips from joint second to fourth.

Capsized

At least 88 people, including a pregnant woman and two children, died when a boat capsized and caught fire off the island of Lampedusa, the Italian coast guard told CNN on Thursday 3rd October. Coast guards were able to save at least 163 people at the time of print

yet the rescue operation is still ongoing, with many more people still in the water. The boat is thought to have been carrying up to 500 people on board. The tiny island off the coast of Sicily was in the news this summer when the pope paid a visit to pray for refugees and migrants lost at sea.

Building collapse

Authorities say they now know what may have caused a five-story building in Mumbai to collapse last week: a decorator who removed a central wall and supporting beams without permission. By Sunday, the death toll from Friday's collapse stood at 61. Fearing they may have pulled out the last of the survivors, officials ended their rescue operation. Ashok Kumar Mehta, owner of Mamamiya Decorators, was charged

with culpable homicide not amounting to murder - a charge equal to unlawful negligent killing, police said. Mehta's business was on the ground floor of the crumbled building. Deadly collapses have occurred in the city in past years as well. Housing rights groups say many old buildings in the city are rundown and neglected, while newer ones are often built using substandard materials and have structural problems.

Political protesters freed

The president of Myanmar (formerly Burma) has announced that he is freeing a further 73 political protesters, in addition to more than 8,000 such dissidents who’ve been released this year. President Thein Sein, who came to power in 2011, has relaxed some of the country’s oppressive regimes, but critics say that peaceful protesters

are still being imprisoned in the country. Speaking at a London conference in July, President Thein Sein said that a special committee was reviewing the cases of all political inmates. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners said it would seek to provide support to the released Myanmar political prisoners.

Another radioactive leak

A new leak of highly radioactive water is believed to be flowing into the Pacific Ocean from Japan's stricken nuclear plant after another storage tank overflowed. A Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) official said workers at Fukushima

detected the toxic fluid dripping from the top of a tank when they were patrolling the site. TEPCO estimates 430 litres of the water, which contains highly radioactive doses of strontium, has leaked outside a concrete barrier surrounding the tank.

“[The contaminated water] went into the drain and we cannot deny the possibility of it having reached the ocean,” TEPCO official Masayuki Ono said. It is the second time in as many months that radioactive water has leaked from storage tanks surrounding the plant, which was heavily damaged by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

SEIZED: The Westgate Shopping Mall was held for four days by Islamist gunmen

Kenya’s mall attack Death toll could rise as police begin examining rubble The four day seize of a Kenyan Mall by Islamist gunmen last month, resulted in more than 60 deaths whilst 31 people are still listed as missing. The Westgate Shopping Mall, in Nairobi, was raided by the armed assailants on the 21st September where they killed, and reportedly tortured, innocent civilians who could not escape the premises. Rescue operations were ongoing throughout the four day ordeal with police officers entering the establishment to try and rescue the trapped civilians. Islamist group, Al-Shabaab, claimed responsibility for the incident, stating it was done in retribution for the Kenyan military's deployment in Somalia. Up to five Briton’s are believed to have been killed in the attacks. Many more civilians are still missing with some believed to be trapped under the rubble of the mall, of which three floors of the four-story building collapsed, leaving reports to suggest that the death toll could still rise.

Indian Army funds

Former Indian Army chief, General VK Singh, insisted that no Army funds have been misused in Jammu and Kashmir but rather they have helped to bring stability and harmony to the state. Participating in a panel discussion on governance issues jointly organized by the

Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, whose niece was killed in the attack said: “We confronted this evil without flinching, confronted our deep grief and pain, and conquered it.” He promised “full accountability” for the “mindless destruction, deaths, pain, loss and suffering we have all undergone as a national family. “These cowards will meet justice as will their accomplices and patrons wherever they are,” he vowed, pledging to work with international allies in a global fight against terrorism. “The incident which we now put behind us was certainly not welcome,” he added. “Yet it has strengthened us and renewed our resolve to live as one strong, open, stable, democratic and prosperous republic where peoples of all races cultures and faiths pursue happiness together. “Our attackers wished to destroy the essential character of our society,” he said. “They failed. Kenya endured. Kenya endures.”

Forum for Integrity in Governance and the Chennai chapter of the Anti-Corruption Movement at Loyola College, Singh said the funds were used for developmental and infrastructural purposes. He was reacting to the controversy over his recent statement that the Army had funded political leaders in

Kashmir. According to Mr Singh, the Army as an institution remains absolutely apolitical and it works for the government with only national interest in mind. “Army people also vote for parties. If someone says the army is politicised, then I don’t know what to say. As an institution, it’s never politicised. Everything happening in the Army is for institutional integrity,” he said.

SHUTDOWN! US Government remains closed after breakdown in talks

CLOSED: Not since the 20th century has the US Government been temporarily closed

The US governmental shutdown drew into a third day on Thursday, with no signs that the unrest will be resolved any time soon. The temporary closure has left 800,000 employees, equating to almost a third of the federal workforce, out of work with no pay until the temporary closure is lifted. A dispute over the debt limit forced the Republican and Democratic parties into a standstill on Tuesday 2nd October, the first of its kind for more than 15 years. President Barack Obama has held talks

with congressional leaders over the partial US government shutdown, but there was no breakthrough with both sides reportedly ‘blaming each other’. The hour-long meeting at the White House came on the second day (Wednesday 3rd October) of a shutdown that has halted federal services and left many government workers at home without pay. Mr Obama stood firm on his demand that Republicans agree to reopen the government and raise the debt limit. “The president remains hopeful that

common sense will prevail,” a White House statement said. The halt in governmental practice was started after a Republican effort to halt the healthcare law dubbed ‘Obamacare’ stalled the spending bill. Republican House Speaker John Boehner described the White House talks as polite, but he said no progress had been made. “All we're asking for here is a discussion and fairness for the American people under Obamacare,” he said. However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the president and Democrats in Congress will not accept changes in the health care law in order to pass spending legislation needed to reopen the government. “We're locked in tight on Obamacare,” he said. It is the first time since 1997 that the US government has temporarily closed, and over the past 17 years, hundreds of bills in regard to the spending bill have been passed without controversy. In an interview with CNBC before his Whitehouse meeting, an latest ‘exasperated’ Mr Obama said he would not negotiate with Republicans until the government is reopened and Congress votes to raise the debt limit. He said: “If we get in the habit where a few folks, an extremist wing of one party, whether it's Democrat or Republican, are allowed to extort concessions based on a threat [to] undermine the full faith and credit of the United States, then any president who comes after me, not just me, will find themselves unable to govern effectively.” The standoff continues.

Iran’s secret weapons?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the world to insist on tough negotiations that ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon. Mr Netanyahu was speaking with NBC when he cautioned leaders against Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's charm offensive, which he described as a strategy carried out to ‘woo the West at the behest of the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’. “[The Iranian people] are governed not by Rouhani. They're governed by Ayatollah

Khamenei. He heads a cult. That cult is wild in its ambitions and its aggression,” he said. Rouhani has indicated an interest in a deal on Iran’s nuclear program — with hopes that harsh sanctions imposed on the country would be lifted if it negotiated more with the West. Iran has said its program is peaceful and Rouhani last month said the country will never develop nuclear weapons, but the West has long suspected — and Israel insists — that Tehran has designs on a nuclear bomb.

Visit India from home

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Google have teamed up to map and create 360-degree virtual views of 100 monuments in India. Once the data has been collected, it will be put online, allowing web users to get a virtual tour of a monument from the comfort of their own home. Almost all major monuments, including the

Taj Mahal, are part of the list. Google says that it has already photographed and mapped Qutub Minar, the tallest minar in India and will soon be available to web users. Humayun's Tomb will be mapped next. The company says that creating 360-degree imagery of a monument takes around seven to ten days.

Jaguar to debut state-of-the-art C-X75 prototype

Hybrid DEBUT: Jaguars’ C-X75 will be showcased in Birmingham next month

The Jaguar C-X75, the prototype state-of-art hybrid supercar, will make its Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show debut, as the centrepiece of the Jaguar Classic Parts stand. Held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, the stand, in collaboration with Jaguar Heritage, will boast an impressive selection of classic and modern Jaguars. Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 concept, which has been provided by Jaguar Cars, in 2010 and has marked the beginning of a new

chapter in innovation and technological advancement. The C-X75 can achieve 100mph from standstill in less than six seconds and can continue on to a top speed of 220mph. Considering these impressive performance statistics, the C-X75 is capable of producing less than 89g of CO2/pkm and will even run with zero emissions for up to 60km. Jaguar Classic Parts welcome visitors to come to their stand in Hall 20 to see this “ground-braking” hybrid vehicle. This year’s stand also includes some historical vehicles from the Jaguar Heritage collection. The cars on display will include: XK120, EType, XJ40, XJS, X300, XKR and XFR Rocketsports, all outstanding Jaguars from different eras. A further

supercar

highlight to this years’ stand in Hall 20 will be a wide range of genuine parts available on display. Jaguar Classic Parts are clearly stating that its commitment to the preservation of classic Jaguar cars has never been stronger. Jaguar Classic Parts will be providing a limited number of vouchers enabling Jaguar owners to receive a discount on their next order. Jaguar Classic Parts technical advisers will be on hand to answer parts queries and give expert advice. The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, is the UK’s biggest classic motoring celebration. Spanning eleven halls, visitors can enjoy an estimated 1,500 cars and 350 motorcycles on display, ranging from the rare and exciting to prewar and retro classics, the sublime to the ridiculous, and many more.

TURBO

Life may be moving at a snail’s pace, but Chevrolet’s latest movie partner – Turbo, certainly isn’t. The American brand has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation to celebrate the UK launch of Turbo, the tale of an unassuming little snail who wants to go faster. In the movie, Turbo gets sucked into the supercharger of a Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 drag racer, fusing his DNA with nitrous oxide. The next day, he wakes up vested with the power of incredible speed and accuracy, as well as some of the characteristics of an actual car, such as eyes that light up like headlights, and a shell that blinks red like taillights and makes car sounds and music from a radio. To celebrate the launch of the film, Chevrolet is participating in a series of pre-screenings of the new animation at cinemas across the country during the first two weekends of October, taking place in Cambridge, Livingston, Oxford, Poole, Portsmouth, Stockton and Wolverhampton. The events will be used by Chevrolet dealers as a customer relationship incentive. "Turbo is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and we couldn't be more excited about this collaboration," said Tim Mahoney, Chief Marketing Officer, Chevrolet. "Millions of future drivers will be inspired by Turbo to realise their dreams both big and small." DreamWorks Animation's Chief

Marketing Officer Anne Globe said: "In a film about a slow snail who dreams of being fast, who better than Chevrolet to give our hero his first taste of high-speed driving on the open road? Our relationship with Chevrolet is a natural fit that adds a layer of authenticity to this wild ride of a story." Turbo’s first appearance in Europe occurred in September, where he shared space with a Camaro and a Corvette on the Chevrolet stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The film itself opens to the public on October 18th in movie theatres across the UK, and will be supported by an on-screen Chevrolet cinema advertising campaign. For more information about the film, visit www.turbomovie.co.uk, or to find out more about the Chevrolet UK model range, including the all-new Trax small SUV and other familyfriendly models such as the Orlando and Captiva, go to www.chevrolet.co.uk Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is the world's fourth largest car brand with annual sales of almost 5 million cars and trucks in more than 140 countries. Bi-turbo power unleashed anMneroucencedessS

One of the worlds most sophisticated cars has been handed over to the engineers at AMG in Affalterbach to create the new, 585 hp, S 63 AMG – set to arrive in the UK in November priced from £119,565. The most powerful highperformance saloon in the luxury segment aims to set new standards in driving dynamics, performance, refinement and technology. The hand built AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine is twinned with an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission. It boasts an output of 585 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque and can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. Equipped with 19” AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels, the S63 AMG uses high-performance composite brakes fitted as standard along with unique AMG sports suspension based on the all-new ‘Magic Body Control’. Backing up the performance is the AMG sports exhaust system, providing a suitably thunderous

soundtrack. The body styling including all-new front and rear bumpers, aiding cooling and adding greater visual drama are joined by AMG specific side sill panels with silver chrome inserts. Innovative technology is a prerequisite with the launch of every new S-Class and the S 63 AMG is no different. There’s an impressive lineup of standard equipment too worth around £8,400. It includes the Driving Assistance Package, Front Seat Comfort Package, Panoramic sunroof, Keyless Go Package, the mighty Burmester Surround Sound System with Six-Disc changer, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Ambient Lighting. As with every AMG, there are options for customers to personalise their car further via the AMG Performance Studio. The Drivers Package (£2,760) de-restricts the top speed to 186 mph and secures the customer a place on an

AMG ‘Power and Passion’ event so they can learn how to handle their car on the racetrack. Carbon Fibre can also further enhance the look of the car with the addition of the AMG

Exterior Carbon Package (£5,000) while the AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system can be added for £7,090.

Land Rover to pilot new scheme for 11-17 year-olds Pilot courses are being run at four locations throughout the UK

Land Rover has developed a unique new driving programme for youngsters called ‘Start Off-Road’. The scheme allows 11-17 year olds to get behind the wheel of a Range Rover Evoque and experience true off-road driving, teaching them skills and techniques that they will go on to utilise throughout their future years both on and off road. Participants have the chance to experience driving techniques including basics such as steering, braking and reversing, as well as more advanced skills such as climbing and descending hills, crossing ditches and ridges, negotiating ruts, wet grass and mud, and even crossing water. Statistics show that younger drivers pick up new skills easier and are more open to learning good driving habits. By instilling the basics in them at an early stage it is hoped that they will gain invaluable experience for later in life. Each student receives a personalised Log Book in which to record progress so that when they come again – to the same venue or another venue – they pick up where they left off. As well as providing participants with an invaluable set of skills the

Chavenage House – Gloucestershire – Sunday 13th October West London Shooting School – Middlesex – Saturday 2nd November Duncombe Park – North Yorkshire – Sunday 29th September, Sunday 27th October; Sunday 24th November Rockingham Castle – Leicestershire – Sunday 6th October; Sunday 10th November Ragley Hall – Warwickshire – Saturday 19th October; Sunday 17th November course is also unique in offering youngsters the chance to experience the renowned capability of the Range Rover Evoque, lauded for both its off-road and onroad ability. Each Range Rover Evoque is fitted with dual controls for safety as well as an automatic gearbox, and a dedicated team of instructors are on new MG3 and the MG6 range here. “MG is a terrific brand and fits perfectly with our family business. Our history goes back as long as the iconic MG brand and we were for many years an MG Rover dealership at Tewkesbury. It’s great to see the MG name back with us.” Warners’ Gloucester site also sells Peugeot cars and the group has two further dealerships in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. Mike Warner, Chairman of the Warners group, said he had happy memories of MG but was even more impressed with the future of the brand. He said: “This is a great time to be involved again with the MG brand. The MG3 is a thoroughly impressive car at an eyecatching price which we know has already created a huge amount of interest. “We’re proud to be associated with MG and to be part of the modern MG story going forward. We have every confidence in the brand.”

New MG Dealership announced Warners MG will be run by the Warners Motor Group, one of the best-known independent motor dealers in Gloucestershire. The group has an automotive history stretching back 90 years. The new four-car showroom faces the busy A38 Eastern Avenue, Gloucester’s ring road, and is one of the most prominent sites in the city. It will open for business in October. Four new jobs are expected to be created at the new dealership which has an eight-bay workshop and will offer full MG parts and services alongside car sales. Chris Smart, Warners’ Director and Dealer Principal, said: “We’re really excited about becoming an MG dealer and looking forward to having the

hand to take participants through every scenario. Parents can also take part in the activity. David Saunders, General Manager Land Rover Experience, commented: “The Land Rover Start Off-Road programme is designed to offer youngsters something unique that they wouldn’t usually be able to experience.

Not only is it a fun day out, it also teaches an invaluable skill set to youngsters before they can even obtain a license. It helps instill confidence in them, gives them a head start and should help make for proficient driving in the future.” For further details visit http://startoff-road.com/

£80 million to remove bottlenecks

Communities up and down the country are set to benefit from government funding which will tackle pinch points that clog up traffic flow on local roads. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has announced £80 million of further funding to remove these bottlenecks, building on the £190 million already allocated earlier this year to similar local congestionbusting schemes throughout England. Of that £80 million, £25 million in government funding has been awarded to 15 schemes to help tackle bottlenecks on the local road network. The Secretary of State also announced he was inviting local councils to submit bids by the end of October for a share of the remaining £55 million being made available. Many of the improvements are expected to be delivered in 2014 and 2015. This weeks’ announcement

brings the total number of schemes to receive investment from the government’s Local Pinch Point Fund to 87. Since March this year the government has provided over £215 million to local authorities, which has enabled local transport improvements of over £340 million to go ahead. The fund reflects the government’s commitment to supporting economic growth by tackling barriers on the local highway network that may be restricting the movement of goods and people. The fund is aimed at those schemes that can be delivered quickly with immediate impact. The fund is available to local highway and transport authorities in England, including Transport for London. Bids will need to be received in the department by 31 October 2013. Bids can either be new schemes or for authorities to resubmit their previous bids to the department following feedback.

A Bradford cricket club, which has seen the likes of Adil Rashid and Gemaal Hussain pass through the doors, was controversially exiled from their local league earlier this month. The decision to remove Manningham Mills Cricket Club from the JCT600 Bradford League was met by anger and frustration by the local community who staged a protest last week at the home of the club. With a proud 148 year history, the Mills have become synonymous with success over the years, nurturing young talent as well as competing in one of the top amateur leagues in the country. However, the decision was made earlier this month to remove the side from the competition following a season long dispute over unpaid fines and ground improvements. A secret ballot was staged by the league officials whereby all 24 teams from the local league voted for or against the exile of their peers with 17 votes going for the decision and seven against. Manningham Mills were subsequently removed from the contest yet the decision has been labeled a rash one by many stakeholders in the club. Mahboob Hussain is a former Mills player, representing the side between 1997 and 2007. He was a leading body in orchestrating the protest at the Bradford-based club and was shocked to hear of the decision. He said: “If you look at the history of this club it is 148 years old. Over the years it’s had players go on to play for England but more In terms of capturing the local talent it is a haven and for this to be shut down would be a catastrophe.

Mass protest at decision to throw Mills out of league

Save our club!

“I think the club would be first to put their hands up and say there has been some administration errors and fines in the past which might have been outstanding but the reasons for dismissal also includes things like the surroundings of the ground. “These facilities are six years old and were built with £1.5million, endorsed by Sport England. The infrastructure really is fantastic. The scoreboard is brand new, and the nets are only four years old. He added: “If nothing else let’s hope this demonstration today makes people realise what the community might lose.” The club currently caters for players aged from nine-years-old and has five junior sides as

well as a first team. Current first team captain, Masood Ahmed, and fellow player Zarak Khan, both explained their worry for the younger generation who may be more affected by the decision than even the first team players. “We might have the ability to simply move club because we are in a fortunate enough position to have that option yet for the kids and some of the upcoming talent they won’t be that lucky,” they explained. Rob Hoveman, aide to Bradford West MP George Galloway, said the Respect party were also upset at the decision and would support the club in their appeal. “We believe the penalty of kicking

Manningham Mills out of the league was entirely disproportionate to the actual offence,” Mr Hoveman explained. “There was clearly a breakdown of communication and one side seems to have taken a very hard view. To our minds kicking the club out like this is remarkable, and is a very rash decision indeed. “The league does not appear to be providing a very good reason as to why they have removed the club and so we want to see them back down and reconsider the decision. Hopefully they will see that they have the right stuff from the club now and Manningham Mills can be reinstated.” The League’s management board has issued the following statement: “As a consequence of a number of serious issues which have arisen during the 2013 season, involving Manningham Mills Cricket Club’s breach of the Bradford Cricket League’s rules and standards, including non-payment of dues to the league, the remaining 25 constituent clubs, affiliated to the League, were asked to consider Manningham Mills’ future membership. “At an Extraordinary General Meeting on 19th September 2013, a representative from each of the constituent clubs was requested to vote on a resolution as to whether Manningham Mills should remain members of the league. “Having regard to all the facts, including representation from Manningham Mills, the result confirmed by 17 to seven with one abstention that Manningham Mills Cricket Club’s membership of the League should be discontinued, with immediate effect. “The ballot was limited to member clubs only, the management board did not participate or offer any recommendation as to how the clubs should vote.”

Nail biting finale sees Keighley clinch cup

Winter World Cup 2022

Organisers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have said they are willing to stage the tournament in the winter to avoid footballers playing in the country's scorching summer months. The debate, which has been ongoing since the Asian country was awarded the World Cup in December 2010, has sparked controversy with stakeholders in many national leagues. Ahead of a two-day meeting of football's world governing body, FIFA, to discuss switching the tournament from its traditional slot, officials said they would not object to the move. However, they insisted they could still run games in the summer, when temperatures exceed 40C, by fitting stadiums with cooling systems powered by renewable energy. “If the international football community reaches a consensus to move the event to an alternate date, we are able to accommodate that change,” a spokesman for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee said. Keighley RZM Cricket Club continue to dominate Sunday league cricket after clinching their third league cup title last month. The West Yorkshire outfit claimed the Solly Sports Cup with a one wicket victory over rivals Lahore at Saltaire Cricket Club, to seal another highly decorated season. The actual game was an epic contest between two of the region’s top sides and could have gone either way going into the final over. Lahore initially won the toss and elected to bat, yet got off to a poor start, losing their first two wickets for just 18 in the eighth over. The pairing of Zafar Jadoon and Zahid Khaliq then stepped up to the crease and managed to steady the situation, taking the side to 61 before a disastrous spell saw Lahore lose three wickets for just eight runs, leaving the side on 69 for five. Up stepped Tariq Mehboob and Kamran Hussain, in another attempt to settle the side and both handled the pressure well to move the score to 128 before Tariq Mehboob dragged the ball onto his stumps. Keighley continued to change their bowling attack with a combination of spin and fast until they brought on the medium pace

Lahore were all out for 153, which was below par for the wicket, and Keighley felt confident during tea. As the sides reappeared it only took seven overs before Thashe Gomue was bowled for two runs and a further quick three wicket haul resulted in the favourites falling to 52 for four in the 22nd over needing another 102 runs in the last 23 overs to win. Yasar Ali and Gulsheraz Ahmed grafted away and moved the score to 108 before losing Yasar Ali (45) who was superbly caught out by Abdur Rahman in mid wicket. Ahmed fought back with two boundaries in the 43rd over to release the pressure but then lost Zeeshan Qasim on 140. Keighley had three wickets and needed just another 14 runs in the last 3 overs. Going into the final over Lahore

needed to take two wickets whilst Keighley required three runs with four balls to go. Wasim Qasim was bowled before Nasar Jamal stepped up to the crease. As the bowler, Zahid, looked to quickly bowl down the leg in an attempt for a stumping, the keeper amazingly missed the ball allowing it to run down to long leg. It was a gift for the league champions as they strolled in the three runs required for victory and cue the pitch invasion. Keighley have now claimed six Quaid e Azam Sunday Cricket League (QEASCL) Premier division titles, five eight-a-side cup competitions and three league cups. They are the only outfit to have accomplished the triple twice in the history of the competition and are now on course for repeating the feat for an unprecedented third time.

GOODBYE: Omar Khan has faced a turbulent financial year as boss of Bradford Bulls

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

In a dramatic and unexpected announcement, the Asian businessman who had pledged to change the future of Bradford Bulls, said that he was quitting. Though it is widely known that restauranter Omar Khan had faced a difficult and turbulent year in charge of the club and was struggling to keep up his commitments, he maintains in his statement that he’s departing on the grounds of ill health. Khan had just recently released some funds from one of his properties to pay for the upkeep of the club. But is seems that the financial meltdown has just been too much for Khan to

take any further. Now, the new boss, Mark Moore who owns a Bradfordbased online bed and mattress company has taken a vow to turn around the fortunes of the Super League club and has said that he aims to do this by running things with his head, not his heart. The news that Khan has severed ties with the club came twinned with the news that former Sports Minister and Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe stepping down as cochairman as will the club’s director Vipin Joshi. Mr Moore and the club’s general manager, Ryan Whitcut, are now poised to take joint ownership of the Bulls, subject to approval from the Rugby Football League.

They have struck a deal with Mr Khan, who along with Mr Sutcliffe took control of the club just over 12 months ago. Mr Moore has not disclosed any financial details of the sale due to a confidentiality agreement that was in place with Mr Khan. In Khan’s statement he said: “My objective, together with Gerry Sutcliffe MP, to move the club from the threat of extinction has been achieved and I have spent every single day for the past year at the club in order to reinvigorate it and bring it back to life. “A lot of hard work and investment has gone into Bulls and now it’s time to ensure the longevity of the club, which is part of Bradford’s Heritage.”
