A community police officer from Bradford is just one of the many Yorkshire residents who have been honoured in this year’s Queen’s Birthday List. PC Yasvender Rehill, who has been serving with West Yorkshire Police for the past 27 years, was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to policing and community engagement. The 52-year-old has been an ever-present on the streets of Bradford for almost three decades, spending 16 years as a Special Constable and 11 as a Police Constable. Just last year he was commended as one of the county’s ‘street level heroes’ picking up the Diversity in Action Award for helping to develop strong ties in communities, yet this latest recognition is something which came as a ‘huge surprise’ for the officer. “I had no idea at all that I was going to get this honour,” he said. “It was a big surprise and I am very proud.”

Bradford was treated to three days of irresistible flavours and tastes last weekend as the World Curry Festival arrived in Britain’s official Curry Capital. Now in its fifth year, the event continues to draw in top chefs from around the world with visitors getting the chance to experience the international curry trail on Yorkshire’s own doorstep. With more demonstrations and delectable dishes than ever before, there was something for everyone to enjoy, from the curry theatre to pop-up restaurants and the return of the now renowned ‘chapatti challenge’. New this year was the World Curry Festival Cooking School which also gave visitors the chance to prepare dishes alongside top chefs in a separate marquee. Jamaica, Malaysia, America, India and Pakistan were just some of the nations represented at the global event which continued to expand into new territories. Zulfi Karim, the festival’s founder, said his main aim was to

get people together to talk over food and was delighted with the success of this year’s event. “We’ve really now taken the festival to an international level and it continues to attract chefs from wider afield,” he said. “Here at the World Curry Festival, our aim and mission is all centred on gastro diplomacy. We get people together around food to talk and that’s really where we are going. “You have seen over the past three days, our audience is so multi-cultural and it is bringing all these people together over one common element - a love for food. “It’s been a fantastic weekend, the weather has been brilliant and I just want to say a big thank you to all those that have supported us, those who come along every year and help make the festival bigger and better.” US Ambassador to the UK, Matthew Barzun, officially opened the three-day event last Friday as he performed a live cooking exhibition of his Grandmother’s recipe - ‘Mother's Curry Sauce’. It is the first time that the Ambassador has visited Bradford

and, alongside Anita Jaisinghani, the pair represented the US at this year’s World Curry Festival. “Anita came all the way from Texas which shows that we’ve begun following the curry trail even further around the world,” Mr Karim added. “She was absolutely amazing and it was for that reason that we got in contact with the American Embassy and the Ambassador to the UK.” He added: “I ended up spending about two and a half hours with Matthew Barzun and what a gentleman he was. “He tried the curries, he had a go at cooking and was very interested in food, very interested in culture and very interested in the wider community.” Alongside the spice spectacular, Poetry in the City, in collaboration with the Ilkley Literature Festival, was also staged providing a feast of poetry for writers of all ages. Kavita Oberoi was awarded an OBE for her services to entrepreneurship and start-up businesses. Within the past 12 months, the former University of Huddersfield graduate has been operating a business hub to

help start-up companies as well as launching an enterprise academy at Burton College. Mrs Oberoi, from Bradford, said she was shocked to have received the award, and dedicated it to her mother, Kalish Vasdev, who she thanked for pushing her into education and to chase her dreams. “I thought these awards were only given out to people when they are in their seventies and eighties so yes it did come as a big surprise,” the 44-year-old said. “I dedicate it to my mum because I came from a background where girls weren’t really supposed to go out and get educated and get a good job. “After my father died, my mother pushed me into my studies and work and helped me break barriers which women, certainly in my family, had never broken through before.” Elsewhere, Kirklees Council’s community cohesion project officer and avid community worker, Habiban Zaman, was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to women in North Kirklees. Ms Zaman, from Dewsbury, has been instrumental in providing support to women across the whole region, setting up support groups and dealing with taboo subjects across different cultures. She said she thought it

• How long does conveyancing take? The conveyancing process does not have a fixed duration. Much depends on whether or not there is a mortgage, the cooperation of all parties involved etc. A straightforward conveyance where there are no major problems can be completed within 6-12 weeks. However please note this is a guide only; some conveyances may take longer and some may be completed sooner.

• How much does conveyancing cost? There are two costs – one is the legal fee and one is a fee for disbursements (see below). The legal fee will depend on the purchase/sale price of the property and whether a mortgage is involved. Leeds’ future authors put pen to paper

Primary school pupils from across Leeds experienced how powerful words can be last week as they were awarded for taking part in a city-wide writing contest. Hundreds of children submitted pieces to the Arooj Creative Writing Competition yet just eight were selected as eventual winners across the three Key Stages at a special ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall. With many highly commended pieces, the eventual winners were victorious in the categories of short stories, calligraphy and poetry, with children receiving prizes ranging from certificates to story books. Organised by Leeds City Council’s ‘Closing the Gap’ team, the competition, which is in its fourth year, is part of a project which aims to increase attainment in pupils of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage and is open to all primary-aged pupils in the city. The aim of the Arooj project is to work closely with the 12 primary schools identified with the largest populations of these pupils to help to ‘close the gap’ in attainment. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor David Congreve, and the Lady Mayoress, Janet Harper JP, were on hand to present the awards to the winners and highly commended pupils in each category. Councillor Jane Dowson, deputy executive board member responsible for learning ,praised the programme and all the

children who had been involved throughout the contest. She said: “Today was the fourth annual Arooj creative writing awards. “The reason we hold these awards every year is to empower children to believe that they can be good writers, authors and poets. “Every year we get loads of children entering the competition and winning prizes so in the future we will have more and more authors in the city – from the Asian community, and many of the diverse communities which live in the city. “It is very important for everybody to be represented in the city and this project is a fantastic way of giving power to the children.” As well as the prize giving ceremony, entertainment was provided by pupils from Arooj schools with everything from Indian dance to dhol drumming, singing to recorders and even rapping to breakdancing. The whole day was even hosted by some of the pupils who showed they were not only fantastic writers but excellent presenters. Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage pupils are the largest ethnic minority group in Leeds comprising six per cent of the total school population. Attainment levels for these pupils is below their peers both in Leeds and nationally, however the gap in attainment has narrowed in recent years due to the hard work of the schools involved in the Arooj collaborative.

Safia was the winner of the Key Stage One poetry competition and said she was really happy to win. “I won a certificate, a notebook and a story book for my poem. It was about having five a day and I really liked it. It was funny and fun to write and I was very happy when I won my prizes.” Ania’s poem about skipping was highly commended by the judges, also in the Key Stage One Poetry category. “My poem was about skipping and that is what I like to do. It was really fun when we were writing them because I like writing. I was very excited when I won and I thought I was going to all the time.”

Canvas unveiled Patchwork art shows

Bradford and Syria were quite literally stitched closer together last week as a giant patchwork canvas was unveiled in the city centre. As part of the ‘What is home project’ children from the war-torn country had drawn their own ideas of what constituted ‘home’ before the same task was given to primary school pupils in Bradford. The result, a 1,000 piece canvas which was painstakingly sewn together by the city’s ‘Sewing Bradford’ group, all free of charge, which was revealed on Monday as part of Refugee Week. International humanitarian aid organisation, Human Relief Foundation, and Horton Grange Primary School had spearheaded the project which eventually produced the four and a half metre long, by two and a half metre wide, piece of art. Qais Khaliq, Fundraising Coordinator for Human Relief Foundation, commented: “We asked five hundred Syrian refugee children and several hundred Bradford children to draw their idea of ‘What is Home’ on a square piece of canvas and then we stitched them together. “The result is this incredible piece of artwork that has come straight from the minds of children. The photographs from Bradford show normal imagery depicting houses and gardens. The Syria ones tend to be a bit more brutal. In some instances we had images of guns, dead bodies and bombed houses. “We hope that this artwork will really show what Syrian children are

going through and will raise awareness of their plight. Since 1987, Getaway Girls has been providing support for hundreds of young women every year out of their base in a little corner of Leeds. And now, after celebrating their 25th year anniversary last year, the charity is still going strong with as much commitment and dedication as ever before. Getaway Girls aims to help young women, aged between 11 and 25, build friendships and confidence whilst also providing a safe outlet to support girls who just need someone to talk to. Projects are run on a daily basis and can be held in the short term or long term, for people of all backgrounds, with many countries represented by visitors to the site. Schools across the city have even benefitted from the support group who often work closely with the team, providing an eight week course to aid with confidence building, self-esteem,

and decision making. Older girls, who have used the services when they were younger, have the opportunity to become peer educators and get involved with doing youth work, whilst receiving training in the field at the same time. Flavia Docherty, Director at Getaway Girls, explained why she believed the charity continued to run successfully out of their modest building on Bayswater Grove. “To say it broadly, we are here to help raise the confidence and aspirations in young women,” she said. “We work with a whole range of young women from lots of different backgrounds. It’s not just for the youngest girls that we have support either, we also have groups for young mums. “Two girls who came here when they were younger have come so far that they now actually work here as well which is great for the current girls to see.” One project currently running out of the site is called Global Girls, which

Getaway Girls looks at similarities and differences between young women in the UK and around the world. Two girls currently partaking in the activities are 14-year-old Salma Rouf and her cousin, Naimah Kazi, 13. Both girls have been attending Getaway Girls for the past seven months and explained what they were currently working on. “At the moment we are doing the Global Girls project and it is just us talking about different issues around the world like body issues, expectations, and racism,” they said. “We try to focus on recent

events happening all over the world and recently we have been looking at the Nigerian kidnapping. “We are currently doing a magazine, to cover all the issues with activities and information in.” Naimah also explained why the pair were enjoying the group so much, adding: “It’s fun, you learn something in a fun way which is different to school. “For me it has really given me a confidence boost as well. I used to be quite shy and didn’t talk that much but now I’ve noticed improvements in school as well. I’m much louder with my friends and even did a speech in front of

a big group which I would never have done before.” The teenager’s mother, and former Getaway Girl attendee herself, Alia Nessa, reiterated her daughter’s sentiments. “I have noticed a big change in Naimah as well and that is why I wanted her to come here,” she said. “I was part of Getaway Girls nearly 20 years ago and I knew she’d benefit from coming to these activities, meeting new people and just gaining confidence as a teenager. “She’d have never done some of the things which she has done if it hadn’t been for a place like this.”

Bradford has been selected as just one of five regions across the whole of England to be allocated substantial funding to help improve the lives of tens of thousands of children. As part of the Big Lottery Fund, the city will receive £49million as it takes the lead in a ground-breaking ten-year initiative to see what methods are best for laying the foundations for zero to threeyear-olds to improve their future health, social and educational outcomes. The investment aims to improve the life chances of more than 60,000 babies and children across all the regions, which also include, Lambeth, Southend, Nottingham and Blackpool.

Dharmendra Kanani, Big Lottery Fund England Director, explained more about the project and how important it was for children to get the best start in life. He said: “Parents want the best for their children and as a society we know that what happens in the first three years of life profoundly affects a child’s future life chances. “A poor start in life can affect your health, wellbeing, outlook on life and how you form relationships. “Prevention matters more in the early years as we have a much greater understanding of what can and might improve the life chances of a future generation, that is why this investment is focusing on the three key areas of social and emotional development, nutrition, and language and communication development.”

According to Bradford Trident the district as a whole has significant deprivation and within the three target wards - Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton - there are high rates of infant mortality, child poverty, poor oral health, high child obesity rates, low numbers of school readiness and high rates of domestic violence and child protection orders. Research shows that one in five children in the three wards have poor communication skills at the school readiness stage and one in three children have poor social and emotional development when starting school. From sword fighting to SWAT team training, there was certainly something for everybody at last weekend’s fifth annual Huddersfield Sikh Mela. People from all over the country made the trip to Bradley, Huddersfield, to experience the Sikh culture in a fun and interactive way for the whole family. As well as Bhangra artists and singers, different forms of entertainment were provided via turban tying competitions, tug-of-wars and fairground rides to name just a few. Re-enactments on the day allowed people from different faiths to learn about the Sikh religion and important milestones in their history. Spectators watched on as famed Bhangra artist, Kuldeep Purewal, performed on the main stage for all to see, with local acts and even a rapper also getting their chance to impress. Meanwhile, plans for a special World Wars Sikh Memorial were also unveiled by members of the Royal British Legion and British Army officers. Thousands of Sikh soldiers lost their lives in the two wars fighting for Britain and the

memorial will remember the ‘fallen heroes’. The Mela was arranged by Yorkshire Lions FC with club official and event organiser, Kalvinder Bhullar, saying that despite a ‘shaky start’ due to the weather, the crowds soon flocked in. “People have loved the SWAT team and their demonstrations of how they arrest people,” he said. “The Mela is a community festival with no alcohol. We’ve had plenty of non-Sikhs here today because it’s for everyone.” Hardeep Singh Sahota, a volunteer on the day added his praise for the success of the event. He said: “The day was absolutely fantastic and brought together different communities through culture, music and faith. “The elder generation have always loved the outside atmosphere and this latest event included so much for people of all ages to do and get involved with. “I was not heavily involved in this year’s planning which was nice as it allowed me a chance to carry out seva (selfless service). “Along with my mum and some friends, I helped give away free food and water at the Gurdwara which which was a great way of giving back.”

After the success of Make Bradford British, the team at Channel 4 couldn’t resist a second series and despite a host of new characters and a new location, there is at least one familiar face. Bradford’s very own, Rashid Khan, star of the first series, will take up a presenting role in the upcoming ‘Make Leicester British’ programmes. Following on from the original, the concept remains the same, with eight strangers from different cultures and backgrounds all coming together to learn about each other’s cultures. Leicester’s ethnic makeup has undergone significant changes over the past decade thanks to migration, and the city is now one of the first in the country where Britons are no longer a majority. Since Make Bradford British was broadcast in 2012, immigration has become an even bigger political issue. A recent YouGov poll found that immigration is now seen as the ‘most important issue facing the country’ (neck and neck with the economy) and Ukip stormed to victory in last month's European elections on an anti-EU, antiimmigration platform. Leicester has a reputation as a harmonious city and a model of successful multiculturalism. The series aims to find out what the city can teach the rest of Britain, but it also looks at how integrated the new European migrants are and what has changed in the communities where they have

settled. With the production process still going on, Rashid Khan said he can’t reveal too many details but did say it was good to be back. “It was overwhelming to be asked back for a second series and I was very excited to hear that there was going to be another,” he said. “I know there’s been a lot of positive feedback from the public wanting to see what has happened to the original cast but instead this series will focus on people in Leicester which I’m sure will still be very good. “As with the first one, it is an eye-opener because if you are going to put eight strangers together from different cultures and backgrounds there’s always going to be highs and lows. “It is not really focussed on religion, more on cultures, upbringings and backgrounds of different people. “It’s like a Big Brother and Wife Swap put into one.”

As with Make Bradford British, in the first programme everyone will live together in one house, eating together, managing a budget and going on trips together to explore their different senses of what it means to be British. In the second programme they will be paired up and spend a number of days and nights together - living in one another’s homes and meeting friends and family – to gain a real insight into each others’ lives. Following the success of Make Bradford British, which won a prestigious international Rose d’Or award, Rashid says he still stays in touch with some of the original stars and explained what he is doing now. “Since the first series, myself, Damon and Desmond have been going into schools and hosting workshops on diversity and social cohesion,” he said. “Because we have experienced different

Tropical Torment Experience the true Sri Lanka on British Shores

ARTIST: Priyantha Udagedara moved to the UK to study a Masters in Painting at Leeds Metropolitan University

The torment of how Sri Lanka's war scars conflict with the island's tropical beauty is being explored at an exhibition which includes pieces from a local university graduate. The collection of paintings, featuring Priyantha Udagedara’s selected works from 2010-2014, was open to the public at The Norman Rea Gallery at the University of York until Friday 27th June. The Sri Lankan born 39-year-old, whose childhood was blighted by his country's civil unrest, was a professional artist before he came to the UK in 2006 to study a Masters in painting at Leeds Metropolitan University. He then went on to undertake a PhD in

Fine Art Practice - also at Leeds Met - which he completed earlier this year. “My art is a new form of landscape, one which exemplifies terror and beauty in one place,” said Priyantha. “The viewer takes in a false sense of beauty before the revelation of the displaced sense of agonising beauty. “Sri Lanka has long been represented as a paradise on earth - the ‘Pearl of the Orient’. This sort of language continues today in tourist brochures and, having lived through the Sri Lankan civil war, my work challenges this ideal of Sri Lanka. My paintings bring together both the island's beauty and the horror of what we lived through. “Major western shows of Asian art have

been dominated by Indian and Chinese work, and those featuring art from Sri Lanka have tended to display a traditional, uncritical view of contemporary life on the island. My work showcases a side of Sri Lanka many wish to be kept out of the public eye.” Priyantha has exhibited his work in Sydney and New Delhi, as well as at several galleries across the UK and in Sri Lanka. He also curated a show of abstract work by four Sri Lankan artists at Leeds Met's Broadcasting Place, last year.

Leeds’ streets get some tender loving care Spring cleaning arrived a little later than expected in Leeds last week, as the city’s streets were given a tidy-up as part of a communitybuilding project. The Richmond Hill Community Centre was the meet point for volunteers from local homes, businesses and the council on Monday, as the team headed to the streets for a day of team cleaning. As well as picking up litter and tidying fly-tip zones, the team went door-to-door to speak with residents about the best way to dispose of waste properly and what implications may arise if they don’t. An information pack was also put together by the Area Support team to reinforce the message and was posted through the doors of residents who were not home. Litter pickers, gloves, bags and even a footpath sweeper were all utilised in the day-long clean up on Kitson Street, Dent Street, Oxley Street and Clark Lane. Cllr Asghar Khan, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill, helped orchestrate the day and said it was

great to see the community coming together. “The general appearance of an area is really important, not just for morale of local residents but a clean and tidy community also creates a fantastic impression of an area for people travelling through it,” he said. “That is why the focus of this particular event was on tidying some of the area’s back streets, to make them look and feel better.” He added: “This event is a great example of the council and its partners working with residents to identify important issues like the appearance of the local environment. “It also presents the opportunity to work closely with local residents to identify other issues that are important to them, like garden maintenance.” Four skips were almost filled on the day whilst a police presence was also on hand to carry out some community confidence activity around the promotion of 101.

Bactive Sport and Exercise camps will be run at Richard Dunn Sports Centre; Nab Wood Sports Centre and Thornton Recreation Centre, giving children between the ages of five and 13, the chance to try out a host of new sports, as well as practicing the sports they love. Bicycle with Barefoot Dancers prepare to print

A Halifax-based Indian dance company have been selected to take part in this year’s Yorkshire Festival and will be telling the story of cycling through a unique style of printing – with their feet. ‘Bicycle with Barefoot’ is a piece of inspiring original Asian dance theatre presented by Annapurna Indian Dance to celebrate the historic occasion of the Tour de France in Yorkshire. The unique performance has been selected as one of almost 50 acts which form the Yorkshire Festival 2014 the first ever 100 day art festival to precede the Grand Départ in its 111 year history. Bicycle with Barefoot involves printing the design of a bicycle on a large four meter square canvas cloth which is secured on a frame and laid on a surface sprinkled with powdered paint. However, rather than your usual brushes or rollers, it is the feet of the dancers which will create the art. Spectators will witness

an imaginative printing process where dancers will be moving carefully on the canvas, using various pressures of their feet, to inscribe their journey onto the blank material beneath them. The concept and inspiration for the project has been taken from the ancient Indian classical dance style called Kuchipudi dance from Andhra Pradesh in India. The dancers will be performing at four major festivals in Yorkshire as part of Yorkshire Festival 2014, with Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, 28th June, and Halifax Arts Festival, 29th June, yet to come. Give a Gift Hundreds welcome return of charity scheme An amazing evening at the Aagrah Midpoint kicked off this year’s ‘Give a Gift’ scheme with hundreds turning out for a special charity gala. Now its second year, the volunteer-run project was initially set up to bring communities together through helping local causes – Martin House Children’s Hospice and Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Unit. More than 500 toys and £5,000 was donated to the causes last year and now Give a Gift returns with even more charities being supported. Announced at last weekend’s launch event, this year’s project

will also support Bradford Hospital’s Children’s Charity alongside the two Leeds-based causes. Guest speakers from all three charities attended on the night and explained some of the heartbreaking stories which they have encountered and the importance of initiatives like ‘Give a Gift’ for both the charities and families. It was then up to the children themselves to speak in front of the hundreds of guests about real-life experiences. Time for business Kirklees Council continued to reinforce their commitment to supporting functional skills in the workplace last week as they welcomed the Trades Union Congress President to Huddersfield. Mohammad Taj spoke at two events in the town on Monday 16th June to mark the first year anniversary since Kirklees Council, Unison, Unite, GMB and Unionlearn signed-up to their first ever Learning Agreement. The visit also marked the start of Adult Learner’s Week - the UK’s largest learning campaign to encourage more adults to give learning a go. Kirklees Council is one of the few in Yorkshire and Humberside to actively progress joint working with the Trade Unions. The partnership aims to inspire and motivate adults to get over the stigma sometimes attached to learning. Adults can be put off from learning because of their previous experience at school, or perhaps because they have not undertaken any formal learning for a long time. As an employer, the council aims to lead by example to create the right environment for staff to learn, investing in the basic skills of any workforce helps to maximise their potential and achieve improvements in work performance.

Mohammad Taj is the first Muslim South Asian trade unionist to be elected President of the TUC and has worked in public transport since 1974 when he started working for Bradford City Transport as a bus conductor. Commenting at the event, he said: “Promoting learning to working people has been at the heart of the Trade Union movement from its early pioneering days. “It continues today through the work of Union Learning Reps (ULR) and education officers up and down the country. “ULRs act as ambassadors for learning and training among their colleagues and workmates. Higher skills and training mean improved productivity and performance, better morale and a workforce that can adapt to new work processes. “These benefits transfer to their home life as well.’’ In the afternoon session, Mr Taj gave a presentation and took part in a discussion about the role of trade unions in a modern, flexible and emotionally intelligent organisation. Beware tax scam

Bradford Council is warning residents to be aware of a scam email telling people that the social sector size criteria, known as the ‘bedroom tax’, has been abolished – this is not the case. ‘Bedroom Tax’ was introduced by the government in April 2013 and was designed to allow people to only claim Housing Benefit for the number of bedrooms their household needs. The email says that if people have been affected by this and want to claim any money back, they need to fill in the form attached to the email which asks for personal and financial details. People may also have seen a Facebook message which makes the same false claims that the ‘bedroom tax’ has been abolished.

Washing raw chicken can spread a food bug called campylobacter, the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. It can be fatal. Prime Minister’s Ramadan Message I want to send my very best wishes to everyone observing the holy month of Ramadan. This is an incredibly special time of year for Muslims at home and abroad: a time for charity, for contemplation and community. Charity is one of the things that Islam is all about. Here in Britain, Muslims are our biggest donors – they give more to charity than any other faith group. We see this spirit of giving all year round, from the mosques running sports clubs for local children to the Muslim groups selling poppies for Remembrance Day, to those people from around the country who put their wellies on, rolled their sleeves up, and went to help the families hit hardest by this winter’s storms. Ramadan is a time when that spirit comes to the fore and I am so proud when I hear, every year, about the millions of pounds raised for good causes for those less fortunate than us here in Britain, and those who are suffering in wars and in famines overseas. Ramadan is a time for contemplation to fast, and to pray, and to think deeply about others. This Ramadan, I hope that we can reflect upon a key aspect of our shared history: the bravery of those who fought and died for our freedoms nearly 100 years ago. Just days after Eid, we will be marking

100 years since the First World War. More than a million men and boys from India fought with our troops during that conflict and many thousands of them were Muslims. They travelled across the world to fight to defend our freedom guided and sustained by their bravery, comradeship, and, above all, by their faith. Their selflessness and their courage helped to secure the liberties we all enjoy today so this Ramadan – and this centenary – we will remember them and reflect upon their sacrifice. Ramadan is a time for community. And there is nothing that exemplifies this more than those nightly iftars when the fast is broken, the dates are opened, and all that great food is served. Last year I was delighted to see how many community iftars were taking place across the country in mosques and in community centres, in parks and even in tents. Again this year Government is supporting the Big Iftar programme with hundreds more communities, from Leeds to Luton, Woking to Manchester, throwing open their doors so that people of all faiths and none can break bread and get to know their neighbours. So wherever you are this holy month I wish you Ramadan Mubarak.

New cycle route launched

Bradford Council launched a new cycle route in Keighley last week as the town gets gripped by Tour de France fever. The cycle route links Stockbridge to Utley with local children and commuters benefiting from the link. Bradford Council was awarded £150,000 from the Department of Transport as part of the National Cycle Hotspot Bid programme to provide a safe route for cyclists in the Keighley area. The bid included partners Sustrans, The Combined Authority and other Bradford stakeholders. The route links the newly built University Academy and the Holy Family School and officially launched on Monday 23rd June.

A five year supply of housing land has been earmarked, which means the council has more say about building on green fields. Many authorities up and down the country are failing to find sufficient land for the next five years and as a result are suffering unplanned development. Should a developer want to build on green-field sites that Leeds City Council has not yet identified for housing it has a strong position for refusal because a large number of sites have already been set aside in the five year supply. Remembering the forgotten Thousands sign petition calling for day of remembrance Thousands of people have signed an online petition which calls upon Prime Minister David Cameron to ‘give a day of remembrance’ to the victims of honour crimes across the UK. More than 95,000 names were signed to the campaign, colaunched by Cosmopolitan Magazine and charity Karma Nirvana, who provide support to victims and survivors of forced marriage and honour based abuse. Following its success, a second petition has now also been set up, directed at Home Secretary Theresa May, which also requests a day of memory to remember all those victims of honour based violence. It is proposed that the date should be on that of the birthday of a murdered Bradford teenager who was killed by her parents in an honour killing in 2003. Shafilea Ahmed was killed at the age of just 17 after becoming ‘too westernised’, despite warning a number of agencies that her life was in danger prior to her death. Chief executive of the Karma Nirvana charity, Jasvinder Sanghera, says Shafilea was an innocent victim of a ‘terrible crime’.

She hoped that by having the day of remembrance on Shafilea’s birthday it would ensure that her memory lived on. “What we need to remember is that Shafilea was murdered simply for being a normal kid in Britain and embracing all that it stands for,” Miss Sanghera said. “She was at risk of being killed and forced into a marriage because of this and despite telling agencies she was in danger, nothing was done. “Her family buried her knowing that it was because of them that she had died, they had killed her. “We want this day to keep her memory alive and pay respect to all the girls out there whose memory may have been erased over time.” Karma Nirvana’s helpline receives more than 800 calls a month although official statistics currently suggest that only one honour-based killing takes place in the UK every month. Miss Sanghera believes that due to such violence often taking place in the home, it is a ‘hidden crime’ and that actual figures could be a lot higher. “We don’t know how many

‘Wheely’ good idea

Bradford’s eye-controlled wheelchair travels to London By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A group of technology whizzes from the University of Bradford have been showcasing their latest innovative gadgets this past week at the National History Museum in London. Dr Prashant Pillai and his team have been demonstrating a working prototype which allows disabled people to control their electric wheelchairs simply by moving their eyes. The initial breakthrough, which came back in 2011, has now been modified by Dr Pillai, and PhD student Suraj Verma, and could help severely disabled people achieve a greater sense of independence. Bradford’s university team had already developed a unique eye controlled robot and a wheelchair controlled through an eye piece. But after months of completely rewriting the software involved, this has now been adapted so that users of the wheelchair do not have to wear anything over their eyes but can simply look at a screen attached to the wheelchair. Speaking before the exhibition, Dr Pillai explained: “The event at the National History Museum is welcoming some of the top university researchers from across the county and it is a privilege to be included in this list. “This technology has the potential to change lives and is at the forefront of what we as a leading technology university are all about.” As part of Universities Week, the researchers headed to the capital, alongside thousands of families, school children, academics and industry experts, between Wednesday 11th and Friday 13th June to show the world their amazing work. The technology works using an eye tracking device that remotely tracks eye movement and then relays that information to the intelligent control unit of the wheelchair. Users simply look in the direction they wish to travel and the wheelchair responds.

The team now intend to refine the technology further, before consulting with disability groups to carry out user testing. They are hoping to attract external investment to allow them to further develop it and take it to market. There are further opportunities to develop the technology to other electrical items in the home. The longer term aspiration is to work towards a fully assisted home, where a user could just look at their television, lighting or music equipment to switch it on. Dr Pillai is a Senior Lecturer in Electronics and Telecommunication and a member of the Future Ubiquitous Networks (FUN) Research Group which is led by Prof Fun Hu. The team also demonstrated other research carried out by the group like their unique eye controlled game and their ground-breaking aeronautical communications technology funded by the EU and the TSB.

is upon us “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) selfrestraint,-” The Holy Quran, Surah Al Baqarah 2:183 Ramadan will be upon us for the next several weeks – a glorious month characterised by sacrifice, self-control, will power and getting closer to our creator – Allah. Whilst in the UK the daily fast will last between 19-20 hours every day, let us remember that when the sun sets we will be met with a food and drink – we will be nourished. According to the World Food Programme the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide - 842 MILLION people in the world do not have enough to eat. They also offer the following alarming facts: • The vast majority of hungry people (842 million) live in developing countries, where 14.3 percent of the population is undernourished. • Asia has the largest number of hungry people (over 500 million) but Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence (24.8 percent of population). • If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.

• Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five - 3.1 million children each year. • One out of six children roughly 100 million - in developing countries is underweight. • 66 million primary schoolage children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. Ironically, the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone; universal agriculture produces enough consumable sustenance to provide everyone

with 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per day (recommended daily intake is 2,000kcal for women and 2,500kcal for men). This therefore means that there is enough food on this earth for every single individual to have a more than sufficient diet yet due to numerous factors, some of which being insufficient land to grow crops and / or a lack of income to purchase food – the undernourished have grown to such an astronomical amount. As Ramadan begins and we go through the daylight hours without a morsel of food or a

drop of water passing our lips, seek solace in the fact that you know when your next meal will be. Be thankful to Allah that you are clothed, have a home and do not have to trudge miles and miles for a glass of water whilst the unforgiving sun beats down on your back, draining you of energy. Many of my non-Muslim friends, peers and acquaintances believe that what we do for one month every year is commendable – I feel it is necessary. When we are rid of gluttony and having whatever we desire at our fingertips we

have time to appreciate the ‘normal’ things in life that we take for granted. We cleanse our minds, bodies and souls and in doing so get closer to our maker – Ramadan is essentially as much of a spiritual rejuvenation as it is a physical test. This Ramadan, remember how much you have – remember how many people struggle every single day to acquire what we believe is a basic human right. Prepare. Rejoice. Self-assess. Repent. Change.

Pushing the boundaries he location of a boundary can be a contentious issue, with a disagreement over a few inches of land leading to the most bitter of disputes. Neighbour disputes are particularly challenging because of the proximity of the parties who continue to reside near to one another both during and after the dispute itself. This can have a profound impact on the relations between the parties and the enjoyment of their homes. Although the deeds to a property may provide confirmation of the location of a boundary line, this is not always conclusive. In practice it can often be difficult to determine precisely where a boundary lies. Whilst the plans in a conveyance can provide assistance in locating the boundary line, these cannot always be relied upon when determining the correct boundary. It may be that the plans are inaccurate or have been drawn in such a way that the thick lines are not to scale and may well represent an area of several feet on the ground. When determining a boundary

dispute, the Courts will be guided by the following relevant principles:• Plans show only general boundaries unless the property is said to be "more particularly described in the plan" • Ordnance Survey plans are no more than a general guide to a boundary feature • The starting point is the language of the conveyance and any plan • Extrinsic evidence such as topographical features on the land that existed when the land was divided may be relevant • Evidence of subsequent conduct may be of value in showing what the original parties intended • Evidence of later features may or may not be of relevance. • It is important to bring certainty to the determination by proclaiming the boundary • Evidence of adverse possession should be considered • Informal boundary agreements need not be in writing • A boundary agreement can be implied or inferred • The Court should also bear in

mind (1) what a reasonable layman would think he was buying; (2) every case turns on its own facts; and (3) the task of the court is to assess all available and admissible material in arriving at its answer, and then to achieve the correct answer. In the case of Acco Properties Limited -v- Mr and Mrs Severn, the High Court dealt with a boundary dispute concerning a British Virgin Islands company which had purchased a plot and driveway adjoining the Defendant’s family home. The Defendants erected a fence in order to prevent the encroachment of trees and undergrowth and a dispute arose regarding the location of the boundary line. The width of the boundary in issue was, at its widest point, 19 inches (49cm). Following an analysis of the relevant principles, the Court determined that the fence had been erected at least 4 inches over the Claimant’s land. The Court ordered that the fence should remain in situ and the Claimants should be awarded a modest financial sum (£1,000) to compensate them for the loss

of what was a very narrow strip of land with no apparent commercial value. The Judge noted that the fence had been erected as a result of neglect on the part of successive owners of the Claimant’s land which had led to the hedgerow crossing over onto the Defendant’s land, which had caused some damage and was therefore a nuisance. The Judge made clear that he did not “accept that the days are gone when a party can litigate over a tiny strip of land, although I would certainly agree that it is usually economic madness so to do, but a person remains entitled in law to protect and preserve that which is his or hers”. Whilst the Courts will strive for a common sense approach, boundary disputes are often emotionally draining for those involved and can result in one of the parties eventually moving home as they find continuing to live in close proximity to their opponent untenable. THINGS THAT BREAK ONE’S FAST 1. Anything put by force into the mouth of a fasting person. 2. Water going down the throat whilst gargling (whilst being conscious of one’s fast). 3. To vomit mouthful intentionally or to return vomit down the throat. 4. Swallowing intentionally a pebble, piece of paper or any item that is not used as food or medicine. 5. Swallowing something edible, equal to or bigger than a grain of gram which was stuck between the teeth. However if it is ﬁrst taken out of the mouth and swallowed, it will break fast whether it is smaller or bigger than the size of a gram. 6. Putting oil into the ear. 7. Inhaling snuﬀ into the nostrils. 8. Swallowing the blood from the gums if the colour of the blood is more than the saliva with which it is mixed. 9. To eat and drink forgetting that one is fasting and thereafter thinking that the fast is broken, to eat and drink again. 10. To eat and drink after Subha Saadiq or to break the fast before sunset due to a cloudy sky or a faulty watch, etc., and then realising one’s fault.

With just days left until the Tour de France arrives in the UK, 25 cyclists from across the country have completed a gruelling ride from Glasgow to London in a 600-mile trip to raise money for charity and promote peace. The event, which started earlier this month, had been named ‘Ride4Peace’ by its organisers – the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC). Cyclists took on the challenge with the ambition of raising £100,000 for British-based charities, the British Heart Foundation and Humanity First. Tackling the winding Ride4Peace route participants got to tour the British countryside, stopping at 13 Mosques in Glasgow, Newcastle, Hartlepool, Bradford, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford, Feltham, and finally London. Faith and civic leaders, sports enthusiasts and members of the public were all on hand to greet and motivate the team at each checkpoint and cheer the cyclists along. The Ride4Peace is just one of several events which the AMC has organised over the past month to commemorate 100 years since its establishment in the UK. The £100,000 being collected will take the total amount raised to close to half a million pounds over May. In addition to stopping at 13

Mosques and a number of BHF shops, the Ride4Peace cyclists stopped to pay their respect at Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park, a First World War memorial originally built in 1921 and recently restored in 2007, and also at the Commonwealth War Graveyard in Ripon. Explaining why the cyclists chose to stop at the memorial sites, Ali Khan, a member of Team Ride4Peace said: “Like myself, many of the cyclists are of South Asian descent and our grandparents and great grandparents played a big role during both world wars. “About 74,000 members of the Indian army offered the ultimate sacrifice fighting for the British Empire in the First World War and more than 1.5million people from across the Commonwealth forces in both World Wars. “It was the collective sacrifice of all those who served that helped to provide us with many of the opportunities and freedoms we enjoy today. Their memory is something to be cherished and celebrated.” Adding why it was so important to welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds to the mosques during the cycle, Ali added: “We hope that opening up our Mosques across the country to anyone and everyone will demonstrate that they are beacons of peace within local communities and not places to be suspicious of.” More information about the Ride4Peace can be found at: www.ride4peace.org.

Extreme literature in private schools Three Christian schools in Manchester have been found to have books which contain extreme-religious views, from stating ‘evolution is a lie’ to ‘homosexuals choose to be gay’. The three private schools King of Kings School in Ancoats, Lighthouse Christian School in Moston, and Sons of Light Academy in Ardwick – do not use GCSEs and ALevels for their students but rather opt for the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum. Further hard-line views which are expressed in the texts, also instruct children that they can avoid AIDs by practising the Bible and that ‘God wants wives to submit to their husbands’. Two of the three schools identified with the extremeChristian texts, Sons of Light

Academy and Lighthouse Christian School, are two of only 22 in the country to be officially named as following the alternative curriculum developed by Christian Education Europe (CEE). Dr Greg Hibbins, general manager of CEE, said: “The users of our curriculum are independent and have the choice to adapt and manage the content as they choose.” Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Headteacher Brenda Lewis, who established the ACE King of Kings School in 1986, added: “The textbooks in isolation only show a very small part of a very large curriculum. It’s a starting point not a finishing point. “As Christians we believe the Bible and we believe what the Bible says, and it does say a number of those things, but we are not single-issue people and

we teach our students to think for themselves and realise there are a vast number of issues.” Earlier this month, books at a Muslim school in Luton were found to express fundamentalist views including promoting stoning and advocating parents hitting children if they do not pray by the age of 10. Ofsted have recently changed their rules on examining literature and the curriculum whilst a spokesperson for the Department for Education said it was vital for all children to learn to respect other cultures. Commissioner backs drive to target fuel drive-off criminals The fight against criminals who fill-up and drive-off has been stepped up in Lancashire – to the delight of petrol station owners. The number of drive-offs – where drivers fill-up with petrol and leave without paying – has been on the up in the county, prompting Lancashire Police, the Crime Commissioner and the Constabulary to develop new ways of tackling the problem. Posters warning offenders it's a criminal offence to fill up and drive off have been put up county-wide, pre-payment pumps have been installed at targeted locations and CCTV has been improved to make the criminals easier to identify and detect. And as part of a new countywide policy to ensure these measures have a positive impact, all garages have now been given the same guidance for dealing with incidents, speeding up police investigations and helping make sure the businesses recover their money. Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Garages across the county were seeing more and more driveoffs – and owners clearly wanted to work closer with the police to reduce this growing trend.

"Now, I've worked with the Constabulary to develop a policy which will help not only businesses but also reduce demand on the police, cutting down on wasted time whilst hopefully ensuring more criminals are caught and brought to justice. "Those who deliberately driveoff from petrol stations are often involved in wider criminality – it's important procedures are put in place to give officers the best chance of successfully tracking the culprits down. This policy is an excellent example of what can be achieved when businesses and the Constabulary work together." The new policy encourages garages to immediately make use of the Forecourt Watch scheme to

record incidents and capture evidence and, where the incident is classed as a civil dispute, link in with the British Oil Security Syndicate (BOSS) to recover the money owed. And police processes have been streamlined to ensure officers aren't deployed unnecessarily to incidents which turn out to be accidental. Unless there are aggravating factors – such as the vehicle being stolen, using false plates, or deliberately avoiding CCTV – the report will be classed as "fraud" but an officer will only be deployed if payment has not been made within a specified time period. Chief Insp Abid Khan, from Lancashire Constabulary, said:

"Petrol stations play a vital role in the lives of our communities, often providing additional services to support to them. "To have them targeted by those who do not wish to do what everyone else is expected to, and pay for their fuel, is unacceptable and we will target these people wherever it is appropriate to do so. "Lancashire Police has therefore worked closely with our business community to develop the new procedure, and I hope it will provide confidence to the forecourt community as well as those who use the services they provide." The Commissioner added: "I hope the new policy will have benefits for both business owners and the police. It should ensure garage owners are happy with the service they receive from officers which will be clear and consistent in every case, and give them the best chance of recovering their debt. "Officers have told me the criminals driving off from petrol stations are often linked to other crimes county-wide, and it is also hoped this new process will improve the chances of catching those responsible."

GCSE anxiety drove student to suicide A student, labelled ‘hard-working, popular and talented’ by the school principal, had jumped to his death from a motorway bridge after becoming overstressed. 16-year-old Mohammed Abdul Razzak was due to sit his GCSEs this summer yet had told his GP on several occasions that he planned to end his life. In January, the Oldham Academy North student walked onto the motorway bridge and plunged 30ft to the ground. Paramedics took him to hospital where he died of his injuries. A gifted pupil, Mohammed was vice student principal at the school and was expected to do well in his exams. He had been a studious pupil yet was described as becoming withdrawn and anxious in his

final school year. His mother, Lufta Begum, said her son became distant and spent a lot of time alone on his computer drinking energy drinks and coffee. In a statement she told the inquest: “He was a healthy child, a hard-working, studious young man with a clever demeanour. “He was a young man who kept himself to himself and had very good predictions in terms of his academic achievements. But he did not discuss anything with the family or those close to him.” Mohammed had skipped a mock exam earlier in the year and later handed a letter to his English teacher explaining that he had felt an ‘urge’ to self harm. He was sent to hospital, by the school and child protection services, where he was

assessed by psychiatrists for one week. Mohammed was assigned a social worker and had begun to show signs of improvement in his attitude yet on 6th January he took the decision to end his own life by jumping from a motorway bridge on the M60 near Oldham. Recording a verdict of suicide earlier this month, Rochdale assistant coroner, Lisa Hashmi, said: “Mohammed was a healthy, intelligent young man who clearly had a very promising future. “Save his obvious intellect, he was a quiet and reserved individual, however in the autumn of 2013 his mother noticed a change in his demeanour. Mohammed’s family, school and other professionals subsequently became involved in supporting him.”

Forcing someone to marry against their will has become a criminal offence as of Monday 16th June. The new legislation has been introduced by the government to help people in England and Wales, but will also apply to UK nationals overseas who are at risk of becoming the victim of a forced marriage. Forced marriage can involve physical, psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse including being held unlawfully captive, assaulted and raped. In 2013, the government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave advice or support related to a possible forced marriage to more than 1300 people. The maximum penalty for the new offence of forced marriage is seven years imprisonment. Law enforcement agencies will also be able to pursue perpetrators in other countries where a UK national is involved under new powers defined in legislation. Home Secretary Theresa May said: “Forced marriage is a tragedy for each and every

victim, and its very nature means that many cases go unreported. “I am proud to say that the UK is already a world-leader in the fight to stamp out this harmful practice with the government’s Forced Marriage Unit working hard to tackle this terrible practice in the UK and overseas. “Today’s criminalisation is a further move by this government to ensure victims are protected by the law and that they have the confidence, safety and the freedom to choose. “This summer, the Prime Minister will also be hosting the UK’s first summit dedicated to galvanising action against forced marriage and related issues.” The new legislation also makes forcing a UK national into marriage outside the UK an offence under domestic law for the first time. The offence is triable in courts in England and Wales. The new criminal offences will work alongside existing civil legislation (Forced Marriage Protection Orders FMPOs) allowing victims to pursue a civil or criminal option. FMPOs can already be made by a civil court against

any individuals suspected of trying to force a victim into marriage. From today the breach of a FMPO is a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. This will strengthen the existing law by enabling speedier and more effective enforcement action against those who breach the terms of an order. It will still be possible for victims to seek enforcement for breach of a forced marriage protection order by way of the civil court’s contempt powers as an alternative to reporting the breach to the police. Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker said: “Forced marriage is an appalling form of abuse which crosses borders and cultural boundaries. The scale of reported cases is deeply worrying, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Legislation is the next key step in solving this problem and builds on the hard work already being done by the government and third sector organisations to tackle this practice. “The message from the coalition government is clear forced marriage is totally unacceptable and will not be

tolerated.” Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom charity, which exists to educate young people about forced marriage, said: “I am delighted that the government has taken action to criminalise forced marriage. “In the most tragic cases, people forced into marriage become domestic slaves by day and sexual slaves by night. “Today’s announcement sends out a powerful message that this indefensible abuse of human rights will be not be tolerated. “Everyone should have the freedom to choose.” Dr Ash Chand, the NSPCC’s strategy head for minority ethnic children said: “The change in the law to make forced marriage a crime in England and Wales is a huge step forward which we hope will deter those plotting against their own children. “Many young people who call our ChildLine service about this issue are frightened, concerned and feel control of their lives is being wrenched from them. “We have produced an animation that will help allay their fears and encourage them to contact us for help and advice.”

Indian antibiotic recall

US drug-maker, Mylan, is recalling batches of the injectable antibiotic ‘clarithromycin’ made in India due to possible impurities, Britain's healthcare regulator said on Wednesday. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, said the decision was due to the potential for small particles of white material to be present in individual vials. The Mylan recall is being made on behalf of Strides Arcolab International and relates to Agila-branded supplies, the MHRA added. The Pennsylvania-based company bought Agila, a unit of India's Strides Arcolab, for more than £940m last year. The issue with the Agila antibiotic follows a series of quality problems affecting medicines manufactured in India that have tarnished the country's reputation as a supplier of cheap generic drugs.

Sealed with a £6million stamp

An inch wide, dirty and heavily postmarked stamp has set a new world auction record by getting sold for £5.5million. The British Guiana one-cent black on magenta sold for nearly 1 billion times more than its original face value at the auction in New York last week. No stamp is rarer than the sole-surviving example of the British Guiana, a unique penny issue from 1856, which has been heralded as the pinnacle of stamp collecting for more than a century. The auction made it the most expensive object by weight and size ever sold and had been sold three times before, each time setting the auction record for a single stamp. The stamp was rediscovered by a 12-yearold Scottish boy living in South America in 1873 and from there passed through some of the most important stamp collections ever assembled. Until Sotheby's international exhibitions in London earlier this year, the British Guiana had been out of public view since the 1986.

Knighted An Indian-origin physicist, best known for his work on the Large Hadron Collider, was accorded an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty the Queen, for his contribution to the field of science. Professor Tejinder Virdee of Imperial College was named a Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, released earlier this week. His citation reads: “Professor Virdee is one of the UK's most distinguished physicists and, as one of the creators of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment he has made outstanding contributions to science.

Beyond his innovative work in particle physics, he is also a great campaigner for science, and promoter of science and education in Africa and India “The CMS experiment, at the Large Hadron Collider, CERN, Geneva, has delivered seminal results in particle physics, including the ground-breaking discovery of the Higgs Boson, or the God particle, a particle that gives mass to other particles. “Beyond his innovative work in particle physics, he is also a great campaigner for science, and promoter of science and education in Africa and India.” Besides the professor, other stand-out names on this year’s Queen’s Birthday List include Hollywood actress and UN special envoy Angelina Jolie, who was named an honorary dame for her work combating sexual violence in war zones. The 39-year-old Oscar winner, who has spent much of this week co-chairing a London summit on war rape with foreign secretary William Hague, joined hundreds more on the final list.

Three Al Jazeera journalists in Egypt have each been handed a seven year prison sentence after a court in Cairo found them guilty of spreading ‘false news’. Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed had been detained at the country’s notorious Tora Prison for six months, with calls from around the world to let the three men go. The journalists, who all denied the charge of working with the now banned Muslim Brotherhood, were charged with helping a ‘terrorist group’ by broadcasting lies that harmed national security and supplying money, equipment and information to a group of Egyptians. was Brotherhood The banned and declared a terrorist group after the army deposed elected Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, just months after taking control of the

country. Since that day, media outlets in Egypt have virtually stopped criticising the army and government with these latest sanctions likely to cause further worries across the profession. UK foreign secretary, William Hague, issued a statement slamming the decision. “I am appalled by the guilty verdicts handed down today and Egyptian against international journalists in Egypt,” he said. “I am particularly concerned by unacceptable procedural shortcomings during the trial process, including that key prosecution evidence was not made available to the defence team.”

On Monday, US Secretary of State, John Kerry, added his upon disapproval, calling Egypt's foreign minister to register his ‘serious displeasure’ at the ‘chilling, draconian sentences’. “Injustices like these simply cannot stand if Egypt is to move forward in the way that President al-Sisi and Foreign Minister (Sameh) Shoukry told me just yesterday that they aspire to see their country advance,” Kerry said in a statement. Qatar-based Al Jazeera has been banned from operating in Egypt after accusations of broadcasting support for the ousted Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood party. The media company has always denied the allegations. In total, 20 people were sentenced during Monday’s court hearing including nine Al Jazeera employees.

Survey area to shift south for missing plane More than three months have passed since the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airline flight MH370, and now the search is being moved to a new area. The next phase of the search will move hundreds of miles south in the Indian Ocean, with the initial suspected crash site deemed too far north after recent analysis. Martin Dolan, chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, said a statement will be issued later this week as to

where a new 23,000 mile search of the ocean floor for wreckage will be focussed. Having previously used an underwater drone to cover 330 square miles at the initial area, believed to be the crash site, more powerful sonar equipment will now be used. Mr Dolan explained why the search was moving and the latest developments in the well-documented case. “All the trends of this analysis will move the search area south of where it was,” he said. “Just how much south is something that we're

still working on. “There was a very complex analysis and there were several different ways of looking at it. Specialists have used several different methodologies and bringing all of that work together to get a consensus view is what we're finalising at the moment.” Two survey ships are currently mapping seabeds, previously uncharted around the new search zone, before the latest solar scanning can take place, expected to start in August.

The new search area is in the vast expanse of ocean which was previously scoured by search aircraft in the days and weeks following the initial disappearance. Although no debris was found on them occasions, Mr Dolan hopes the new technology can provide a more conclusive search. The area, just off the west Australian coast, will be analysed using technology which can scan depths of 4.3miles in the ocean and is expected to take 12 months to complete.

A suicide bomber in Lebanon has killed one person and wounded 37 others in a believed-to-be targeted attack on one of the country’s top military officials. On Friday 20th June, the explosion at a security checkpoint in the West Asian country narrowly missed security official, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, who had warned that he may be targeted. The bomb went off in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, near the Syrian border on the main highway between Beirut and Damascus, where Lebanese Sunni Muslim militants have recently been targeting the Syrian President’s allies. President Bashar al-Assad has received support from the

Shi’ite Muslim Hezbollah movement in the neighbouring country and last week’s attack is just the latest of many by the militant group. Ibrahim had passed the checkpoint, where the bomber blew himself up in his car, just moments before and was just 200 metres away in his convoy when the explosion occurred. “We miraculously escaped,” Ibrahim told Reuters, adding that many officials in Lebanon were being targeted by the reactivation of ‘terrorist sleeper cells’. “But the security services are ready and on alert to stop them and we won't become another Iraq,” he said in reference to the fighting between Shi'ite and Sunni factions in Iraq, where Sunni militants have seized

wide swathes of territory. Ibrahim, a Shi’ite who is currently in charge of Lebanon’s Directorate of General Security also stated that security officials had told him Sunni militants were aiming to assassinate him. “We were suspicious of the [bomber's] car when we were on our way and when the car stopped at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint, the explosion went off,” he said. The one fatality was a police officer at the checkpoint. The wounded were mainly police, as well as civilians, in the area. Later on Friday, security forces closed a number of roads in Beirut and Tripoli in anticipation of a security risk.

The launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 CoupĂŠ heralds the arrival of the fifth-generation of the iconic high-performance sports car from BMW M. Both dripping with tech, for the first time the CoupĂŠ and Saloon models receive individual model names. Another first is the adoption of a turbocharged engine for this BMW M model: the high-revving, 3.0-litre six-

cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology has been specifically developed for this purpose, and produces a maximum output of 431hp. Its peak torque of 550Nm is available across a very wide rev range starting at just 1,850rpm, and exceeds the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. In spite of this, the new engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent.

The new powerplant also boasts excellent fuel economy: the combined consumption in the EU cycle is as high as 34mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 194g/km, an improvement of more than 25 per cent over the previous model’s figures. To maximise dynamic ability and ensure excellent efficiency, a weight loss of over 80kgs has been achieved - both models now feature a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof. BMW M engineers have paid particular attention to the car’s aerodynamic performance, and incorporated the latest Active M Differential amongst numerous other technical highlights. During the development process the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers,

With the new BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, the engineers sought to optimally channel the air around the car in the quest for ultimate performance, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and brakes receive the requisite cooling. Even when operating under heavy loads on the racing circuit. The aggressively styled front apron, smooth under-body and the clearly defined lip spoiler at the rear of the M3 Saloon (or integrated bootlid spoiler at the rear of the BMW M4 Coupé) reduce lift by an equal amount at the front and rear axle, to the benefit of handling. The Aero Curtain and M side gills, the latter with integrated Air Breathers minimise turbulence in the front wheel arches. Intern’s Qoros 9 Sedan Concept makes UK debut

After an internship during which he worked amongst some of the most talented automobile designers in the industry, a design student’s vision of a Qoros for the year 2020 was showcased at the Coventry University Degree Show in the UK. Jihoon Seo – a 29-year-old Korean – undertook a five-month spell with the brand’s designers in Shanghai as part of the Qoros Design Team’s internship programme. Qoros then sponsored Seo through his finalyear project that represented the culmination of his studies at Coventry University’s School of Art and Design. During his internship, Seo was mentored by Tim Pilsbury (British), Senior Manager of the Qoros design studio in Shanghai. For his final year project, Qoros briefed Seo to create a flagship concept saloon for the new China-based international brand to launch in the year 2020, specifically aimed at 40-50 year-old professionals living in a modern metropolitan city. Unveiled at the Coventry University Degree Show as a 1:4.5 scale clay model, the Qoros 9 Sedan Concept displays a next-generation interpretation of Qoros’ pioneering New Premium philosophy. It

exhibits several design cues evident in the brand’s Qoros 3 Sedan – on sale in China and Slovakia since late 2013 – and Qoros 3 Hatch, which will join the Sedan in showrooms in China in the middle of 2014. It also introduces some new concept design themes for the future. Clean horizontal lines and generous proportions give the Qoros 9 Sedan Concept a simple, modern and distinctive look and the present-day Qoros signature hockey-stick design theme is featured in several individual styling elements around the car. The side profile is elegant and powerful, with a bluff leading edge and coupé-like rear, where the Cpillar extends almost all the way to the boot-lid spoiler. At the front a trapezoidal grille with a chrome surround,

flanked by powerful LED Xenon headlamps and fog lamps, creates a strong, impactful face. Surgeon-turned businessman to showcase two of his prized possessions at the Salon Privé An Indian surgeon’s collection of classic cars spanning several eras, is to be showcased right here in England, and boy… if these cars could speak they’d have one hell of a story to tell! As one of the world’s most prolific classic car owners Dr Ravi Prakash has a stunning collection of much-loved classics including Mercedes, Rolls-Royces, Jaguars, Mustangs, Corvettes, Sunbeams, Cadillac’s, Packard’s, Lanchesters, Daimlers and Delages. The Prakash’s are the first family in India who are huge enthusiasts of the vintage and classic car movement and it was only natural that Dr Prakash would be invited to display two cars from his prized collection at this year’s Salon Privé in West London. Dr Prakash, affectionately called “Doc” by the vintage car-world, acquired his first ‘classic’ in 1979 - a Sunbeam-Talbot 1937, 2 litre sports tourer, willed to him by Retd. General Mahadevan, Commander of the Indian Army who lived in Madras. This fuelled his passion and since then, Prakash has amassed over 225 cars, 60 motorcycles, horse carriages, cycles all housed in ‘Kala Farm’, on the outskirts of Bangalore, Southern India. A cardiothoracic surgeon by profession turned into businessman, Dr Prakash and his family, simply can’t wait for the weekends so that they can take these vintage cars out for drives along country roads and amidst the crazy Indian traffic! Fifteen employees are dedicated to working full-time on these cars in an inhouse workshop, tinkering, painting, repairing and sourcing parts from all over the world. Commenting, Dr Prakash said: “Ever

He is planning to build the largest classical car museum in India to house the collection which is expected to be finished in late 2016. His collection has been dedicated to a charitable trust and the monies earned

by the museum will be used for treatment of road traffic accident victims. More recently, the Prakash family featured in the inaugural ceremony of India’s first GP circuit in Delhi, where more of Dr Prakash’s cars from his 200piece collection drove the F1 drivers around the circuit for the opening ceremony parade. Daughter, Shefali drove Jaime Alguersuari, Rupali drove Sergio Perez, Sabena drove Sebastien Buemi and “Doc” drove Lewis Hamilton. Salon Privé is a boutique event which opens on Wednesday 3rd September with the crème de la crème of classic cars from around the world competing in the internationally-renowned Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance. “Docs” 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I and 1930 Delage D8 S are both entered in the ‘Fit for a King’ class which showcases cars from around the world with Head of State or Royal provenance.

A local martial arts club were celebrating last weekend after coming away with a significant medal haul at a regional championships. Huddersfield’s Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain (T.A.G.B) club can’t seem to lose at the moment with their latest trip, to the Midlands Championship in the Worcester Arena, ending in a

haul in categories including sparring, patterns, and team events,” he said. “I hope their achievements will inspire many of the younger club members to go on to greater things and continue building on the successes we have been achieving.” It wasn’t only the students who found success at the tournament with Zeeshan himself picking up his own accolade. Competing in the Men’s Black Belt Tag Team sparring event, the Bradford resident came away with

a Bronze Medal to add to his evergrowing collection. Meanwhile, his sister, Natasha, turned up the sibling rivalry as she showed martial arts certainly does run in the family. Two second place finishes in the Ladies Green Patterns and Sparring events, were further backed up with a Gold medal in the Ladies Tag Team Sparring contest. Other notable performers on the day include Aleeya Sohail, third in the Girls Yellow Belt Pee Wee category; Neha Tabasum, third in

the Girls Lightweight Yellow Belt Sparring; and Dev Patel, who became Midland Champion in the boys red belt category with a first place finish in middleweight sparring. Schumacher out of coma

Seven times Formula One racing champion Michael Schumacher, who suffered severe head injuries in a ski accident last year, has come out of a coma and been transferred to a Swiss medical centre. Schumacher, the most successful Formula One racer of all time, has had several brain operations since his accident in the French Alps in late December. He was moved for further treatment early on Monday to Lausanne's CHUV hospital, a sprawling modern glass-fronted complex above Lake Geneva. Over the Christmas period the former driver slammed his head against a rock while skiing offpiste near the family’s chalet at Meribel in the French Alps, about two hours from their home along Lake Geneva. Schumacher, hugely popular in his native Germany and across the world in a sport that had become immensely lucrative in the course of his career, has been regularly visited at his bedside by his wife Corinna.

Leeds United have appointed the relatively unknown David Hockaday as their new manager as the Championship outfit prepares for its first full season under the ownership of Massimo Cellino. Hockaday, who has never managed in any of England’s top four divisions, was sacked from his role at Blue Square Premier side, Forest Green Rovers, after a poor start to the 2012/13 campaign. During his tenure, the side lost seven of eight games which makes the appointment at Elland Road even more surprising. Many fans had been hoping a big name manager would come in to help ‘steady the ship’ following Brian McDermott’s mishandled departure in May. 56-year-old Hockaday has signed a two-year deal with the club and will assume overall responsibility for the coaching staff and first team playing squad with immediate effect. He has previously held coaching roles at Premier League clubs Southampton and Leicester City and played for Yorkshire side, Hull City, in the early 90’s.

In any other encounter, Taskin Ahmed would have easily picked up the manof-the-match award with his figures of five for 28 yet that is now how the script was meant to read. Suresh Raina top scored in the whole contest with a measly 27 runs, as India elected to bat first. The hosts opening partnership, Ajinkya Rahane (zero) and Robin Uthappa (14) set the pace of the game with the surface clearly favouring the bowlers at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Umesh Yadav stepped up to bat last and was one of only four batsmen to break into double figures with a score of 17.

A pair of fundraising petrol heads from Huddersfield hit the road earlier this month as they raised thousands of pounds for a local children’s hospice. Moin Valli and teammate, Andrew McGee, headed south to France for an experience like no other as they partook in the

Forget Me Not 500, raising money for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. The team were given just £500 towards expenses for their fourday trip, and were targeted with raising sponsorship of £3,000. In their classic MGB GT sports-car, the pair set off on their journey on Thursday 12th June heading for the Channel Tunnel. Crossing from Kent to France they even managed to

squeeze in a stop at Brands Hatch (race track) on the way, in build up to the Le Mans circuit. A steady drive through France saw them arrive at the world-renowned Le Mans 24 hour track on Saturday where they were able to soak in the atmosphere of the historic venue.
