Thousands of people travelled and joined others across London, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Liverpool last weekend, to demonstrate their utter outrage and dissatisfaction on the BBC’s reporting ‘bias’ towards Israel on the Gaza coverage since airstrikes began. More than 5,000 people partook in the Drive for Justice demonstrations at Media City in Manchester on Saturday 12th July. Hundreds of other campaigners were seen outside BBC offices

throughout the country. Organisers of the Manchester Media City demonstration, Blackburn-based Youth on a Mission, say that the BBC has a duty and obligation to its licencefee-payers on fair reporting as a public service broadcaster. Youth on a Mission state that the BBC have maintained a proIsraeli bias on the manner in which it has publicised the conflict and skewed public views into believing that Palestinians triggered the attacks. ‘Media bias’ Since Israel’s heavy bombardment of Gaza began on 8th July, social media has been ablaze with graphic videos and images of innocent Palestinian civilians including children and babies injured or killed. It’s been after these clips became viral predominantly through Facebook that activists for Drive for Justice have felt obligated to stage their discontent with BBC. Gaza has no army, air force, or navy, while Israel possess one of the strongest militaries and stateof-the art combat tech in the world. Hamas, an organisation with a military wing, is it’s only defence and that too with small arms and often home-made offensives. 25-year-old Adnan Hussain of Youth on a Mission says that news coverage was ‘devoid of context or background’ about the previous Israeli occupation of Gaza. Adnan commented: “The least

one would expect from BBC is to remain impartial. “The BBC, and other news networks such as Fox and Sky, have all reported in similar tones as the BBC. It’s ‘number of dead Palestinians’ vs ‘number of Israelis killed’. There’s a very manipulative reason why they choose those particular words to report on fatalities. “Not only that, when talking about the two conflicting sides, mainstream media relays it as ‘Israeli Army’ vs ‘Gaza militants’. The Palestinians have been labelled as the aggressive party! “We have to get the facts right here – The Israeli government has relentlessly been stealing land from the Palestinians – only a few decades ago there was no “Israel” – it was all Palestine. “How often has that been clarified by the media?” Social media The Gaza Crisis and the atrocities that the Palestinians have been subjugated to is not something new, with unrest in the region happening for decades. So the question is “Why now? What has triggered so many people into stepping forward eager to stage the protests?” Youth on a Mission says: “The objective of Drive for Justice is to deliver the message to our government and organisations such as the BBC, that we can gain the support of the people and that we can unveil the truths.”

Social media is something that we all, including our younger generation, taps into, and this is how we relayed the message of the rally and it snowballed from there. “For me, it was watching video clips of innocent children’s bodies ripped apart because of missile attacks on their home. I have two young children. Anyone who cannot be moved after witnessing the utter despair that the Palestinians are going through, just isn’t human. Other protests Other demonstrations and vigils in the country have called upon Britain’s Prime Minister, David Cameron, to intervene in bringing an end to the "the brutal intensification of violence upon the Palestinians" at hands of the Israelis. Locally, over 3,000 people gathered on Sunday 13th July at Bradford Centenary Square. The organiser, who wishes to stay out of the limelight, says that he feels that the government needs to be made aware that people are no longer ignorant of the IsraelPalestine conflict. He said: “OK, we might not be able to stop a war by such protests,

but we sure can get a message loud and clear out to the people to push their local MP’s into addressing the issue with the government. “On Sunday, we saw Rabbi’s step forward and condemn the actions of the Israeli government. We saw other faith groups turn up and stand for humanity. We saw our local councillor’s come out and

Honorary Doctorates

Graduation season is upon us and as students across the country prepare to step away from their academic lives and enter the world of employment, dozens of honorary degrees are also being presented to their worthy recipients. Such an accolade is issued to a person who may not have completed the standard requirements for that degree yet has made a significant contribution to the wider community. In Leeds, a total of 15 Honorary Doctorates, and two Honorary Masters, will be handed out at Leeds Metropolitan University next week. Amongst them, will be Hanif Malik, Chief Executive of the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston, who will receive an Honorary Doctorate of the University for his contribution to public life and the city of Leeds. Having been established for twenty years and operating under the banner of Hamara for ten years, the organisation has grown into the largest ethnic minority organisation in the voluntary and community sector in Leeds, with 30plus staff.

Mr Malik has been at the forefront of the establishment’s growth and says he was surprised to be named on the list after struggling in school himself. “It is fantastic from a personal perspective and obviously I am really honoured to receive it,” he said. “For me it is hopefully something that will inspire others because I only achieved three GCSEs at school and that was the sum of my academic career. “Obviously education is very important but hopefully by me getting this doctorate it will give people higher aspirations to achieve in life even if they don’t obtain the best grades. “I always encourage young people to do their best academically, but if you have the right attitude in life and put in the hard work, you will be on the right way.” The Leeds resident has worked closely with the university in recent months, as Hamara delivered a healthy living project which looked to improve the health and wellbeing of taxi drivers, with research and evaluation support provided by Leeds Met. He has also represented the voluntary and community sector on the Local Regeneration Partnership Board and the Local Strategic Partnership Board

Mr Sagoo has been at the forefront of the GNNSJ for 40 years since helping to establish the place of worship for local Sikh residents to visit in South Leeds. He too will receive an Hon Doctorate of the University at a ceremony later this month alongside the two aforementioned recipients. The 73-year-old grandfather said it was a surprise to be named on the list and was hesitant initially to accept the award. “Initially, I believed the actual degree may have conflicted with my own ideologies so I actually sat on it for a month before I could accept it,” he said. “I consulted a few people and they all said that I didn’t ask for it, and in fact I was being given it, so I should take it. “I will be extremely proud and may even get a little bit emotional but I will accept it with the greatest of humility.” Lastly, mosque leader Qari Asim MBE, who has worked tirelessly to build bridges between communities in Leeds since the 7/7 terror attacks will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws for his contribution to public life. Imam at the Makkah Mosque on Thornville Road, Leeds, Qari was awarded an MBE by the Queen in her 2012 Birthday Honours list for services to inter-faith relations and the community. This work involved him holding open days at the mosque to enhance community relations following the London bombings, and regular interfaith and inter-community events. He commented: “I am incredibly humbled to receive such a prestigious honour from a distinguished institution, which is embedded in local communities. “I am committed to promoting harmony and understanding between different communities, which LOCAL: Chairman of the Leeds Guru Nanak Nishkam I believe is the key to a peaceful and integrated Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ), Harbans Singh Sagoo, will coexistence.” All three men will receive their awards on Tuesday receive an honorary degree for helping Sikhs in South Leeds to be a part of mainstream society 22nd July at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Conviction Quashed Solicitor helps innocent husband win appeal after being labelled ‘rapist’ by wife By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Leeds solicitor says that more and more women are doing ‘whatever it takes’ to remain a UK citizen after seeing a rise in the number of allegations being made in regards to false sexual or physical abuse. Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, has just recently closed a three-year appeal case which saw an innocent husband have his 13-year sentence revoked on the grounds that his wife lied about being sexually abused. The accused, Mr Khan, who asked for anonymity, had initially been handed the lengthy sentence after being found

guilty of 16 counts of rape, over a twoyear-period, by the complainant, his wife. Yet after a lengthy appeals process, which included collating fresh evidence namely: 16 witness statements, and documents from a number of organisations including the Home Office, DVLA, hospital and a bank, the conviction was resoundingly quashed. From the offset, Mr Khan vehemently denied all the allegations and Mr Iftikhar says the support of his client’s family was crucial in helping to prove the man’s innocence. “He was fortunate to have such a supportive family behind him, who supported him throughout this ordeal,” he said. “Our appeal was so strong, and the

evidence that came with it, that the Court of Appeal actually took the rare decision to say no retrial would be ordered after this latest decision. “It is worrying to see these types of cases on the rise, with more women from the Asian subcontinent seemingly willing to do whatever it takes to remain in the UK. “Mr Khan’s case also had the added incentive, for the woman in question, to secure custody of the children. The father had been given the right to care for them and his wife once again used these allegations against him in an attempt to take the children away. “The past three years have been extremely difficult for Mr Khan but he can now start rebuilding his life.” Mr Khan’s case was finally decided upon earlier this month in front of Lord Justice Laws, Mr Justice Andrew Smith and His Honour Judge Cooke QC. Meanwhile, Mr Iftikhar explained further why he believed this type of case was becoming more common. “There is no doubt that the making of these false allegations are becoming more prevalent in society today,” he said. “By alleging that a partner has sexually or physically abused a spouse, they are more likely to be granted permission to remain in the UK on compassionate grounds and this inevitably has a knock-on effect on custody battles. “Innocent people are falling victim to false crimes being reported and hopefully this story will warn others of the situation.” A spokesperson for the innocent Mr Khan provided the following statement in regard to the case. “The Khan family was devastated as to the manner in which the allegations of abuse were approached by the authorities and particularly the conduct of the Greater Manchester Police which only became apparent during the appeal process. “It became clear that not only had the complainant lied on oath but that the police had suppressed evidence (in favour of the defence), which would have impacted on whether there would have been a conviction in the first place. “Notwithstanding that our loved one lost his reputation, liberty and career, despite overwhelming evidence, the police are taking no action against the former wife. This the family find is wholly unfair. “Ultimately, the family had to search far and wide for a criminal solicitor specialising in criminal appeals and wholeheartedly recognise that without the assistance of Mr Iftikhar of Kamrans Solicitors, Leeds, who scrutinised the case in fine detail and whose search for fresh evidence over three years was clinical and in great depth, the chances of success would have drastically reduced. “The family are now considering their options against the conduct of the complainant, Greater Manchester Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Pupil Premium is helping children in Bradford

Hundreds of disadvantaged schoolchildren in Bradford are reaping the benefit of the Pupil Premium with figures show that last year 35.6 per cent of youngsters from poorer backgrounds in Bradford achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade. This compares to 34.8 per cent in 2012 as payments introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government begin to have a greater impact. Ofsted said the figures showed headteachers were spending pupil premium more effectively with the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their classmates closing. Liberal Democrat MP David Ward said: “This is further proof that the Pupil Premium is transforming the chances of pupils in Bradford and helping to build a stronger economy and fairer society across the country. “Whilst it is clear that the Pupil Premium is working and has increased attainment in Bradford by 0.8 per cent for disadvantaged pupils, I would expect greater progress in the future when the scheme really gets bedded down in schools. The pupil premium budget is increasing to £2.5 billion this year as well as extending the policy to three and four-year-olds. From September all infants will receive free school meals.

The United Nations signed a new directive in January this year, which called upon the European Union’s 28-nation-bloc from dealing or cooperating with businesses in the occupied territories of IsraelPalestine. Surprising then that one of Britain’s leading supermarket chain, Tesco, would trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which is proclaimed illegal under international law. The supermarketgiant’s branch on Canal Road in Bradford, are selling dates during the Muslim’s holy month of Ramadhan. However, to the fury of Asian Express readers, they’ve discovered that all packaged varieties of the dates were from Israel West Bank. Many have said that they will stop shopping at Tesco altogether. Sajad Hussain, from Bradford said: “I was DATES: The produce at the Bradford Tesco store, is clearly labelled up as produced and packed in occupied Israeli territory

absolutely disgusted that Tesco was flogging produce aimed predominantly to Muslims in Bradford during Ramadhan, from a region where Muslims are being subjugated to horrors that we can’t even imagine. “To add insult to injury, the store manager seemed phased when I questioned him whether he knew that Israel West Bank is a globally-recognised illegal territory.” Asian Express contacted Tesco head office to question why they were trading with Israeli businesses from an illegal territory and what action it would take on selling dates from that region. A spokesperson from Tesco said: “We currently have one product that comes from the West Bank a line of dates that is grown in Israel and packed in the West Bank. “We clearly label the product as coming from the West Bank so customers can make an informed choice. “We will be sourcing dates from a different facility outside the West Bank from September this year.” A growing international boycott campaign has been threatening the Jewish economy for a number of years in the wake of continuing development of Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank. In February this year Norway’s finance minister directed a boycott worth $810 with two Israeli firms.

ENDURANCE: Nazim Ali will run the Leeds 10K this weekend despite being in the middle of a 19-hour fast

A determined fundraiser says he is ready to take on the ‘huge challenge’ of the Leeds 10K run this weekend despite it falling during the month of Ramadan. Nazim Ali, from Bradford, will not eat or drink throughout daylight hours on Sunday 20th July, yet insists it will not stop him from pushing himself to the limit in the name of charity. Raising funds for the Penny Appeal’s Syria Emergency Appeal 2014, he hopes to help Syrian refugees in Hatay, Turkey, by providing them with much needed food and other essential items. As an ambassador of the Penny Appeal, and General Secretary of the Bradford-based community organisation Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), Nazim has already completed a number of challenges for charity. Despite prior experience, he says this will be one of the toughest

runs yet, as it falls directly in the middle of a 19-hour fast. “The challenge will be both physically and mentally draining as I will have no access to water,” he said, “yet my struggle is nothing in comparison to the plight of the Syrian Refugees.

Children across the district are being treated to teddy bears’ picnics at Bradford Council libraries this summer. It’s a classic childhood activity that really feeds kids' imaginations, as they get to listen to stories and rhymes provided by their local library while eating tasty treats. With an impressive total of more than 1,000 children attending the Bookstart Teddy Bears' Picnics last year, hopes are high for building on that huge success this time around. Some of the events are taking place in parks alongside the libraries or at other green locations and the little ones just need to bring along a favourite teddy and a picnic. The children will also get chance to join the libraries' Bookstart Bear Club, which helps families create a reading habit in their children for a lifetime of enjoyment. After kicking off in style at Baildon Library on 14th July, this summer's Bookstart Teddy Bears’ Picnics continue with 14 smaller picnics taking place at other libraries in the coming weeks. Other fun activities will be offered at many of the picnics, such as face painting, simple arts and crafts, music and a visit from Bookstart Bear. Dedicated Dozen to lead social change

Leeds’ own Hamara Centre has been selected as just one of a handful of national organisations who will help spearhead a new project targeted at driving social change in communities. Over the next two years, as part of UnLtd’s and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s ‘Lead the Change’ programme, the partners will develop innovative approaches to supporting community and social entrepreneurs, and will learn and share what works. Each partner will receive up to £25,000 which they will use to make awards to local people with entrepreneurial solutions to social need. Bradford pupils crowned community champions Year six pupils from Barkerend Primary School are to be become the second group of children from the school to be crowned ‘Community Champions’ at a special assembly. The Barkerend Primary pupils aged between 10 and 11, will receive special certificates for completing the programme, which was set up and run by Places for People and supported by Bradford Council. They will receive their certificates from Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Roger L’Amie, who will be accompanied by Deputy Lady Mayoress Mrs Elizabeth M Smith. Over a series of interactive and fun lessons, pupils looked at what it means to be part of a neighbourhood, making the right choices, consequences of antisocial behaviour and nuisance, and people who help in their neighbourhoods and communities. The pupils had to design and make collages based on likes and dislikes about their neighbourhoods and communities, who to go to for help, and complete worksheets to demonstrate what they have learned to achieve their status as Community Champions. This is the second year that Places for People has run the free programme at Barkerend

A new campaign, which was launched in Bradford last week, has already stretched out to Manchester, Halifax and Harrogate as cities and towns turn green in support of Palestine. The ‘Green Ribbon Campaign’ was launched by the Khan-Can People Charity in an attempt to raise awareness of the ‘injustice’ of what is happening to the Palestinian people. The initiative has already seen hundreds of people adopt a green ribbon, whether it be tied to their bodies, cars or homes, and has received support from local councillors and businesses. At one site on White Abbey Road, Bradford, a fence has been transformed into a sea of green as more than 300 ribbons have been tied to the posts. During a special ceremony last week, Bradford Council’s Deputy Leader, Imran Hussain, tied his own ribbon to the site and lit a candle to remember those who had died in the ongoing unrest. Founder of the charity, Imran Khan, said he wanted to see the country unite behind the campaign and help send a clear message that ‘the British public want action to stop the Israeli attacks on Palestine’. “Many of us have been affected by the incidents in Gaza and the unfortunate silence our Government has regarding the freedom for the Palestinian people,” he said. “So what are we going to do about it? Well it might not be much, but I need your help with my Green Ribbon campaign. “I want everyone who is supporting and fighting for the freedom of Palestine to tie a green ribbon to all their external items, be it house gates, street lamps, cars, gates of Buckingham Palace; I want the whole of the UK to be littered with as many green ribbons as possible.” He added: “Hopefully this will act as a reminder to ourselves, and our government, of the suffering of the people of Palestine.”

Law professor labels new legislation as ‘rushed’ and a ‘blanket surveillance’

CRITICAL: Professor Subhajit Basu, from the University of Leeds, has criticised the new law which he says is too intrusive and conflicts with basic fundamental rights

Following the announcement of the UK’s latest surveillance law last week, a Leeds professor has had his say on what he describes as a ‘rushed’ piece of legislation which weakens our basic rights. Professor Subhajit Basu, Associate Professor in Information Technology Law at the University of Leeds, openly disapproves of the law which sees the UK become more of a surveillance state than ever before. By using data retention in a more expansive way, the government will be able to

keep even more records on every individual, something Professor Basu strongly criticises. “This is an act of desperation of a government which is running out ideas and issues,” he said. “This new legislation requires that personal communications data is held for 12 months, giving law enforcement access to metadata of phone calls, emails, text messages and the like. “Metadata includes information about the time messages are sent and the location of the sender, but not the actual content. “The level of intrusion is

unbelievable so information about each one of us will be kept. It is a false argument that the state will lose track of dangerous criminals without the new law. “This is about protecting the law enforcement authorities from the consequences of actions that would otherwise be unlawful. This is not just about protecting the public, this is more like Chinese style ‘blanket surveillance’. “This is a hastily drafted and ill-conceived legislation

that is merely reactive and not proactive.” The introduction of the law was first announced last week, on Thursday 10th July, when the coalition government, with support from the opposition, published the draft emergency legislation, titled the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Bill. With no prior debate to the ruling being introduced it has been criticised by many who see it as too intrusive and Professor Basu adds that

it ‘breaches fundamental rights’. He added: “This is setting a very bad precedent, previously government never attempted to re-legislate provisions that have been found unlawful through breaches of fundamental rights (European Court of Justice decision). “This is a dangerous precedent. This new law breaches fundamental rights yet nobody has had the chance to debate and question.”

Appeal for missing 15-year-old

Police are appealing for help to trace a 15year-old girl missing from her home in Darwen, Lancashire. Maryam Mahmood was last seen at about 8.30am Thursday 17th July 2014 outside Norden High School on Stourton Street, Rishton where she was dropped off by a relative. Maryam suffers from asthma and is also believed to be fasting for Ramadan. She is described as Asian, 5ft 3ins, slim, with long dark brown hair and wears glasses. She was last seen wearing her school uniform consisting of a purple polo shirt, black trousers, black shoes, with a blue rucksack. The biggest arts festival for young people in West Yorkshire heads to Leeds this week with the start of the Breeze Arts Festival. Now in its eighteenth year the festival (formerly the Breeze International Youth Festival) is back and bigger than ever, with over 30 events over nine days, and runs from Saturday 19th July to Sunday 27th July. The festival, for 11-19 year olds, has got even bigger with even more events to take part in than last year. The majority of events are free or have a Breezecard discount. More than 2,500 people have already downloaded Bradford Council’s new app since it went live in May. The app can be downloaded free from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store and is currently suitable for Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. Using the app, residents can use many council services including: signing up for alerts to remind them when their bin collection is due, when job vacancies are posted on the Council’s website and when schools are closed. The app is in the first phase of development and more features will be added in the future. The Council is currently working on an Android version that is compatible with older Android phones, resolving a few issues with the iPad version and a web-based version that will work on a Windows phone and this work should be completed by late summer.

A volunteer-run project which helps feeds dozens of homeless individuals every month has stepped up its efforts during Ramadan and is already seeing a fantastic response. ‘Ramadan with the Homeless’ takes place every Friday during the Islamic holy month, located outside the Leeds Art Gallery, on the Headrow. Around 100 volunteers take to the streets to hand out free food and drink to those less fortunate in society with every person asked to bring something down to give away. Whether it was a slice of pizza, pot of pasta, or even a dessert, last week’s event was described as a ‘huge success’ with a mass turnout of volunteers both young and old. Running for two years in the city centre, the project was initially setup to allow young Muslims the chance to give

something back to society and co-founder, Adil Hussain, says he has been delighted to watch the initiative grow from ‘strength-tostrength’. “We initially thought of setting this kind of initiative up after some friends were running a similar project over in Manchester,” he said. “As Muslims, charity is a fundamental part of our religion and you can see by these events, especially during the month of Ramadan, that there are a lot of people out there who want to help the less fortunate in society. “There is no hidden agenda or personal gain behind this project. We are here solely to please God by feeding the homeless and hopefully help them restore their faith in humanity.” Whether they are tasked with serving up the food, organising it, or just talking to some of the homeless people who come down, every volunteer purely comes down through their own choice. This is something which Adil says is an

inspiring thing to see and he hopes more people will continue to get involved. He said: “It is a beautiful thing seeing so many people come together to help out one common cause and especially with the engagement of youths in particular. “I will always remember one person who came down to receive some food told me that by him talking to some of the volunteers it

helped him ‘feel human again and part of society’. “To think that this project can have that much of an impact on somebody’s life shows how important it is to not only feed the homeless but also interact.” At just 25-years-old, Adil adds that he does hope to inspire some more young people to get involved with charity work as it is

extremely rewarding for all parties. “At the moment young Muslims are getting so much negative press,” he said. “We want to show the world the true meaning of Islam and that we really are good people.” The final Ramadan with the Homeless event will be held on Friday 25th July before the event is returned to its monthly schedule on the last Friday of every month.

A team of students from a local Leeds school took a step into the future last week as they drew up plans for a revolutionary robot. Year 8 pupils from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) dreamed up the innovative creation as part of the inaugural Young Innovator of the Year Awards, run by Harper Adams University. Nikita Bharath, Jenni Greenfield and Laura Memmott teamed up to the ‘planning, helping, design organising, excellent, best ever robot’ otherwise known as Pheobe R. The awards were aimed at 11-19 year olds who were interested in design and innovation and the GSAL team were highly commended for their efforts. Entrants had to suggest a new way that robots might help us in the future and design a robot for that purpose, presenting the idea as a poster, video or web page. From around 1,000 entries, 50 were shortlisted and their creators invited to the Young Innovator of the Year Awards ceremony at Harper Adams. As well as being shortlisted in the

team category, Jenni, Nikita and Laura’s video earned them Highly Commended in the Best School/College category with Jason Bradbury, of Channel 5’s The Gadget Show, on hand to present the awards. Jenni, Nikita and Laura came up with the idea for Phoebe R in their ICT lessons at school, and then worked together at home to film their video showing how Phoebe R could get you organised, from waking you up in the morning to reminding you to do your homework. Laura said: “We’re all forgetful and a little bit disorganised and Phoebe R solves that problem - it will remember everything for you.” Jenni added: “It was a lovely surprise to get shortlisted; we really just did the robot for fun.” Tim Street, head of ICT and computing at GSAL, praised the trio’s initiative and was delighted to see them receive the commendation at the awards ceremony. “Jenni, Nikita and Laura worked very hard to produce their video for the competition,” he said. “They worked well in a team, at lunchtimes, breaks, before and after school to meet the deadline, and I’m very pleased that their entry was shortlisted.”

An initial warning had been released last week after US security chiefs told Britain’s Department for Transport (DfT) that alQaida operatives in the two aforementioned countries had joined forces to develop bombs that would avoid detection and bring down aircraft. A spokeswoman for Britain's transport ministry declined to give any further details on any further security measures or to say whether the increased security was even linked to the US concerns. Meanwhile, a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said the changes were a response to a ‘real time’ and ‘credible’ threat but could not comment on specific intelligence matters. “Aviation remains an attractive target to global terrorists, who are consistently looking for ways to circumvent our aviation security measures,” the spokesperson said. “As always, DHS continues to adjust security measures to fit an ever evolving threat environment. “Information about specific enhancements and locations are sensitive as we do not wish to divulge information about specific layers of security to those who would do us harm.” The main concern is that militant groups could try to blow up US or Europe-bound planes by concealing bombs on foreign fighters carrying Western passports who spent time with Islamist rebel factions in the region, according to the US sources.

#Cakes4Syria Tens of thousands raised through nationwide ‘bake sale’

After a hugely successful campaign during Ramadan last year, the Cakes4Syria team are back once again in 2014 and have already raised well over £25,000. Expanding into a nationwide mission this year, the simple concept of buying a cake in exchange for £10 will help vulnerable Syrian refugees who have been affected by the ongoing civil war in their home country. Five pounds from every cake purchased goes straight to Islamic Relief’s Syria Appeal and this year’s fundraising target has already been smashed with cakes purchased across England, Wales and even Scotland. The project is run by young Muslim volunteers with distributors across the country on hand to drop off the cakes at the customer’s doorstep twice a week. With more and more orders coming in on a daily basis, it is up to the team at the Bradford Hub to keep the campaign running smoothly. Volunteer and one of the lead

organisers of this year’s event, Sibbat E-Noor, said he was thrilled to see such a response on a nationalscale and that it was an easy decision to expand the operation this year. “Last year we had so many people calling from London and Birmingham wanting cakes that we decided that we really had to sit down and discuss whether it was feasible,” he said. “Basically from there we decided to go ahead with it and ever since we have received thousands of calls up here in Bradford and our 10,000th cake is set to be delivered on Thursday (17th July).” More than six million Syrians are currently in need of humanitarian aid with 1.7million refugees. The Cakes4Syria campaign has proved to be a big success both years it has run and Sibbat adds that it doesn’t surprise him how much

people are willing to give. “At the end of the day people want to help but often don’t know how,” he said. “By simply picking up the phone and buying a cake you are helping someone in Syria and you are also getting a sweet reward too. “The generosity of our volunteers, of Islamic Relief, and of the people buying the cakes has been fantastic. We have even had one school right here in Bradford order 56 cakes at once just this week.” Cakes can be ordered by calling the Cakes4Syria call centre on 01274 952 144 or texting 07511 724 372 between 12pm and 8pm. Fasting related diets have recently become all the rage. The most widely acclaimed at the moment is the 5:2 diet (where you eat normally for five days in the week and fast [consume 500 calories for the other two]) though this sits amongst the hundreds of other juice cleanses, detox regimes and intermittent fasting programmes that are currently being marketed to those who want to lose weight – and lead a healthier lifestyle. When the body is denied food it burns fat so that energy is created and this in turn can lead to weight loss. However, if the body is denied sustenance for too long, it will eventually start to break down our muscle protein for energy – this is not good. The changes observed in our body physically on the outside and felt internally on the inside depend on how long we are fasting for. Diets such as the 5:2 and certain other detoxification cleanses do not last for a prolonged amount of time – the denial of food is temporary and so the benefits of these are high. In a normal fasting state, our bodily glucose is used up as our main source of energy; once this use has been maximised and exhausted, fat becomes the next source of energy for the body and starts to be broken down. Whilst this is ok, what we do not want to happen is for the body to begin using protein for energy through the breakdown of muscle – this is what is technically known as starvation and what happens in bouts of prolonged fasting. In cases such as the 5:2 diet or in Ramadan for example, this stage is highly unlikely to be reached due to the intermittent nature of the fast in the case of the former, and the daily breaking of the fast in regards to the latter. It’s not all about food Fasting during the month of Ramadan is a fundamental aspect of Islam – it is one of the five pillars of the religion and is observed by millions of Muslims throughout the world. The Islamic calendar is a lunar one, meaning that the dates of Ramadan (if put into accordance with the standard calendar) change every year; this year sees those in the UK fasting for around nineteen hours a day. Obligatory fasting has not been prescribed to Muslims for cosmetic reasons – it is not a means to lose weight so that we can fit into that pair of jeans we bought last month. Rather it is a time to reflect; to understand how not to take things for granted, to teach us selfrestraint and self-discipline, to take away all outer distractions so that we may get closer to our maker and, if done correctly, to

cleanse our bodies of any toxins and impurities – to strive to become as perfect as we were when we were put onto this Earth by Allah. What happens to our body during Ramadan? Fasts during Ramadan, wherever you are in the world, last from sunrise to sunset. The energy lost throughout the day from no food or drink can be replaced and accounted for during the pre-sunrise (suhoor) and the pre-sunset (iftar) meals. This prevents the breakdown of body muscle for protein. Whilst we are using glucose for energy whilst we are fasting, following suhoor and iftar we begin to use fat for energy – which in turn preserves muscle and lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. Following several days of fasting, increased levels of endorphins (the hormone released during exercise) become apparent in the blood which as a result, give a feeling of less fatigue and a sense of mental and physical wellbeing. It’s a month long – do it properly To ensure that our muscles do not breakdown for energy during Ramadan, meals must contain food groups that give us energy – i.e. carbohydrates and fats. Ideally slow energy releasing / complex carbohydrates (for example barley, lentils, wholemeal flour, wheat etc.) and fats. Refined carbohydrates (those that contain sugar and white flour) should try to be avoided. All of the major food groups should be incorporated into the diet: carbohydrates, fats, fibres, proteins, minerals and vitamins. In fact, the composition of our meals during Ramadan, if done aptly, should be the same during non-fasting months. It is said to avoid caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee, coke) as these stimulate increased water loss through excessive urination. Deep fried foods should be avoided and replaced with baked or shallow fried foods. High sugar and highfat foods such as cakes, chocolates and Asian mithai should be broached with a lot of caution – instead milk-based sweet treats and dishes like grilled chicken and / or meat should be incorporated into the diet. Potatoes with skin on are also a great energy food. For mind, body and soul Remember, the daily fast during Ramadan is to benefit YOU in the long run; you can make it as healthy and as productive as you like. It is a test of will, devotion, and physical and mental strength...if done properly, the rewards – here and in the hereafter – will be bountiful.

Srebrenica Memorial Day

As the annual Srebrenica Memorial Day arrived on Friday 11th June, more than 600 mosques across the country united to hold a special sermon and du’aa to remember those who died in the 1995 Bosnian massacre. Muslim worshippers commemorated the victims of the genocide which saw more than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys systematically murdered and buried in mass graves in Srebrenica. The United Nations called it ‘the greatest atrocity on European soil since the Second World War’ and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) ruled that the mass executions constituted genocide. The sermon was written and prepared by Imam Qari Muhammad Asim MBE, from Makkah Mosque in Leeds and he explained why the date was so important to remember. He said: “The tragic events at Srebrenica represent the biggest act of genocide in Europe since the Second World War, and the fact that such events took place in the heart of Europe makes them even more shocking. “The sermon, which was delivered at mosques across the country, offered a unique opportunity to honour the lives lost

in Srebrenica and to highlight the continued consequences of genocide. “In the sermon, we reaffirm our own commitment to tackling hatred, intolerance and prejudices, and to build stronger community relations in the UK.” Currently, the UK leads the way in the EU in commemorating Srebrenica Memorial Day. The European Parliament passed a resolution in 2009 asking every EU country to commemorate the day, which aims to remember the victims, committing ourselves to tackling hatred and intolerance, and so creating a better society for all. The sermon, du’aa and Remembrance Iftar’s were just some of the events taking place to mark Remembering Srebrenica Memorial Week, which began on Sunday 6th July. Three national and 20 local events took place across the UK, all organised by, or in conjunction with, the UK charity Remembering Srebrenica, which is the country’s organiser of the national events to commemorate the anniversary. Many of the organisers are former delegates from the charity’s ‘Lessons from Srebrenica’ education initiative, which sees groups of key people taken to Bosnia & Herzegovina to witness first-hand the effects of the genocide, and the wider impact that hatred can have on society.

Britain planned to train a Syrianrebel army PLAN: Former chief of staff, General Sir David Richards, was the mastermind behind the plan two years ago which would have seen a rebel army trained up for one year before marching on Damascus

A secret plan to train-up and equip a 100,000-strong Syrian rebel army in an effort to overthrow leader Bashar al-Assad were turned down just two years ago as they were deemed ‘too risky’. General Sir David Richards, or Lord Richards as he is now known, was the country’s leading military personnel at the time and had shown the proposals to Downing Street and the National Security Council, as well as US officials. Plans are often drawn up as contingency strategies yet few are circulated amongst such personnel as Lord Richards’ proposals were. The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the reports yet, according to the BBC, Richards had suggested that an international coalition was established to train the rebels at separate bases in Jordan and Turkey. The army would be trained for a year, whilst a new alternative Syrian government was to be established in exile. Once the force was fully equipped for the challenge, it was suggested to the PM that the new Syrian rebel army would march on Damascus, with support from fighter jets provided by the West and Gulf allies. Richards’ two-year-old proposals came just days after US President Barack Obama had said he was seeking $500million in funding to do a similar project which would see Syrian rebels receive training. Britain had initially pledged to stay away from the war-torn country yet once it was revealed that chemical weapons had been used, David Cameron was all but forced to consider military action. US and UK officials have since accused the Assad army of being behind the attacks, yet Damascus have always insisted it was rebel groups. Monzer Akbik, spokesman for the Syrian National Coalition, an opposition alliance,

said: “The international community did not intervene to prevent those crimes and at the same time did not actively support the moderate elements on the ground. “A huge opportunity was missed and that opportunity could have saved tens of thousands of lives actually and could have saved also a huge humanitarian catastrophe.” Speaking to the BBC, Professor Michael Clarke, of the Royal United Services Institute think tank, added his beliefs that, though it would have been risky to set-up training two years ago, it may have been the most effective plan. He said: “We have missed the opportunity to train an anti-Assad force that would have real influence in Syria when he is removed, as he will be. “I think there was an opportunity two or three years ago to have become involved in a reasonably positive way, but it was dangerous and swimming against the broader tide of history… and the costs and the uncertainties were very high.” He added that he thought now it was too late to take such action. “Western policymakers in a sense have got to have the courage to do nothing and to work on what comes after the civil war,” he said. “There are no good options over Syria. It is a slow-motion road accident.”

A school in Bradford has been commended for its promotion of ‘cohesion, diversity and anti-racism’ after becoming the first educational establishment in the city to receive a prestigious award. Horton Grange Primary scooped the School of Sanctuary Award last month in recognition of their hard work around refugees and asylum seekers. Pupils at the school demonstrated a passion for learning about the subject whilst the teaching staff provided a curriculum which helped reinforce aims and visions promoting social cohesion. As part of the criteria to gain the award, Horton Grange had to provide a portfolio of work for evidential proof that they were working towards making the site a welcoming and safe place for all. Sanctuary in Schools project development worker, Mary Blacka, praised the school as she handed over the award, saying the pupils and staff had really gone the extra mile. “Normally the portfolios are one well-stuffed leaver-arch file but when I turned up at Horton Grange I found four enormous, crammed lever-arch files,” she said. “I think that is typical of the way the school addresses issues around diversity and cohesion and this award is very richly deserved. “The school has been practicing the ideals of a School of Sanctuary long before I ever came in. There is obviously enormous support from school management and a special mention for Niela Ahmed.” The school has already been praised for its work in promoting racial equality; becoming the first in the country to receive the Stephen Lawrence Award at Level Two first

Niela Ahmed, R.E and Equality co-ordinator, explained further: “We’ve been working towards this for so long and it was actually during Refugee Week that we got the award. “After the canvas was unveiled in the morning we had a separate ceremony after school at the Fabric Gallery where we were presented with the certificate for a School of Sanctuary award. “We were all really proud, firstly, because we are the first school in Bradford to get it, and secondly because of all the hard work put in over the last year.” The school is now working towards obtaining the Stephen Lawrence Award at Level Three as it continues to promote cohesion in a multicultural society.

Reading the Riot Act n a previous article we looked at The Riot (Damages) Act 1886 which provides a right to claim compensation where premises are damaged or destroyed by rioters from the statutory body responsible for overseeing the local police. In a landmark decision, the Court of Appeal has awarded compensation for consequential losses, such as loss of profit or loss of rent, caused as a result of rioting. The case of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance & others –v- The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime concerned damage caused to the Sony distribution warehouse in Enfield as part of the widespread disorder and rioting following the shooting of Mark Duggan by Police in August 2011. The warehouse had been looted and set on fire by a group of youths and was completely destroyed. The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPC) declined to compensate the Claimants under the Act for property damage and business interruption losses. Court proceedings were issued in which the Claimants sought to recover almost £60 million of

indemnified losses by Insurers together with £4 million of uninsured losses suffered by owners of stock held at the warehouse. The Commercial Court confirmed that in order for a valid compensation claim to be made under the Act there must be a “riot” within the meaning of the Public Order Act 1986; the rioters must be “tumultuously assembled”; and the rioters must engage in wanton damage to property as opposed to looting in order to steal. In order to satisfy the requirement that the rioters are “tumultuously assembled”, it is required that the group be acting in an agitated, excited, volatile manner, usually also making a noise which, at least notionally, should put the police on notice of the riot. The Court took the view however that it was not necessary for the rioters to be making a “tremendous” noise and the real “touchstone” is that there must be some public element to the rioters’ behaviour so as to create a perceived or palpable threat. In this case, the Court considered the wider context of the riots in Enfield together with the social media content relating to it and found that a palpable threat had been created such as to make the Police notionally aware of the risk of an attack on the warehouse. Whilst the Court was satisfied that the claim for compensation was validly made, the Court found that the wording of the Act was such that any compensation payable was limited to physical damage and did not extend to consequential losses, such as loss of profit or loss of rent. However, the Court of Appeal has now overturned this decision. The Court of Appeal took the view that there is nothing in the Act which prevents a claim for consequential losses meaning that compensation can be sought for all losses incurred consequent on the damage to the property, to include business interruption losses. ave you been a victim of an under-settled personal injury claim? There are nearly one million personal claims settled every year by solicitors in England and Wales. The vast majority are dealt with efficiently by solicitors to achieve the maximum compensation but there can be another story. Until the summer of 2013 the majority of these cases involved the solicitor paying a referral fee of about ÂŁ800.00 for each personal injury claim to an insurer or accident management company. Much of the work was done by unqualified fee-earners doing vast

quantities of cases with pressure of steep targets. The result is the incentive to settle cases too cheaply on damages and too quickly to improve the cashflow of the solicitors and not for the benefit of the client. Here at the Miah Solicitors we recognise that some clients may have been badly advised in personal injury claims. Personal injury over the years has gone through a series of changes which have affected the market, mainly the abolition of legal aid and the introduction of no win no fee arrangements. Pakistani businessman’s Bestway Group to buy out Co-operative’s 774 pharmacies

The troubled Co-operative group has agreed a deal in which it will sell its pharmacy business for £620 million to the Bestway Group. The transaction is due to complete in October 2014, following the fulfillment of a number of required steps to separate the Pharmacy business from the Co-operative. Bestway is UK’s second largest independent Cash & Carry operator and eighteenth largest privately owned company, started by Sir Anwar Pervez in London in 1976. Today, the Bestway Group stands as the world’s seventh largest family-owned business with a turnover of £2.52billion. The agreement follows a formal sale process initiated by the Co-operative reflecting its decision that the pharmacy business was not part of its future strategy. Last year the Co-op bank discovered they had a £1.5billion gap in its finances. The net proceeds of the sale will be used to reduce the Cooperative’s debt and invest in its core businesses. The Bestway Group stands as Pakistan’s second largest cement producer and joint owners of Pakistan’s second largest private bank with assets under management of just under US$10.3billion. United Bank Ltd (UBL) has a branch network of over 1,400 branches serving over five million customers. With this new acquisition, Bestway will have an annual turnover of approximately £3.4 billion and a global workforce of more than 32,600 people, with over 11,900 people from the UK. Bestway has built up a successful global business over 40 years by investing in and connecting with the communities it serves. The philanthropic arm of the group, the Bestway Foundation, annually donates 2.5 per cent of its post-tax profits to social projects in the countries in which it operates.

Rochdale man jailed for starving step-daughter

A man who deprived his stepdaughter of food, causing her to become seriously unwell, has been sentenced, along with the child's mother who allowed the abuse to happen. On 7th April 2014, a 32-year-old man admitted causing a child to suffer serious physical harm. His partner and the child's mother, a 30-year-old woman, admitted allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm. They cannot be named due to legal reasons. At Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Thursday 17th July 2014, he was sentenced to three years in prison and she was given a 15 month suspended prison sentence,. On the evening of 23rd April 2013 into the early hours of the following day, the victim, aged 10 at the time, was found collapsed and unresponsive on the bathroom floor of her then Rochdale home. An ambulance was called and she was admitted to the Royal Oldham Hospital. On arrival she was found to be severely malnourished and had a distended abdomen, consistent with a child who has not been fed. She also had gross nutritional deficiencies. She told police how she had stopped being regularly fed, that she would be given food intermittently including being fed raw potato peelings - and would not be able to eat with the rest of the family, claims that were verified by siblings. Photographs were taken of the

home address and a room believed to be the victims showed no clothes or possessions. There were toys and electrical equipment for other children at the address. The girl also disclosed how, shortly after being admitted to hospital, her mother had said that if she did not tell anyone about her home life then it would not happen again and she would get fed every day and would even be given "pudding and custard". Detective Inspector Caroline Ward, said: "This is a tragic case and had the abuse continued much longer there is a very real possibility it could have cost this young girl her life. "Thankfully it came to the attention of the emergency services in time for her to receive specialist and appropriate medical treatment. It also ensured we and our partners, including Rochdale children's services, could put structured safeguarding measures in place around her, which along with her determined spirit has helped her to make a remarkable recovery. "There is no question that she was treated differently to her siblings, being deprived of food and affection over several months. "To knowingly inflict such abuse on a young, innocent and vulnerable child defies belief and goes against the very basic instincts of human nature. "She is now in a loving, caring and nurturing environment but the abuse she has suffered will most likely stay with her for the rest of her life."

Drop in crime and burglary rates The Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark Burns-Williamson, welcomed the latest police recorded crime statistics which showed that crime overall had dropped by nearly two per cent in West Yorkshire, compared to a 1.3 per cent drop across England and Wales. The figures, revealed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), show that domestic burglary is down by 13.5 per cent for the 12 months to March 2014, compared to the year before. The figures also show that robbery is down by 11 per cent, with criminal damage and arson dropping by 6.2 per cent. Despite some positive reductions, increases could be seen in sexual offences which rose 11.7 per cent during the same time period, shoplifting (up 6.9 per cent), and violence without injury (up 17.6 per cent). Mr Burns-Williamson said: "These figures demonstrate that West Yorkshire Police officers and staff are working incredibly hard to help bring down crime across the county as the drop below the national average shows. “Domestic burglary is a target in the Police and Crime Plan and reducing it is a credit to the work of

Mainstream media gone dumb?

Since the three Israeli settlers were kidnapped and subsequently found dead, the Israeli authorities have escalated their control over the people of Gaza, as usual in the form of violence, fear, and now bombing from land, sea and air. Since the beginning of the escalation, ordinary people, from around the globe, from all walks of life, all religions, all cultures, have joined together, sometimes in their tens of thousands, to show their support for the Palestinian people. Their soul purpose has been to voice their contempt for the disproportionate Israeli attacks and collective punishment, of the already beleaguered citizens of Gaza, and also the West Bank. The mainstream media, such as the BBC, from here in Britain, were reporting the attacks on Gaza, as a justification for Hamas rocket attacks. As for my part at this point, I could not bare the bias reporting of the situation, and reached for my phone, and made a video giving a brief outline of what was actually happening, and why Hamas had fired the rockets. What began to become clear was that Hamas were reacting in selfdefense after the mass arrests of

civilians. After a few days, reports came pouring in over social media, especially Facebook, showing that people were beginning to protest in favour of Palestine, and against the Israeli attack on them. Yet our media remained silent. As a direct result of the video I had posted to Facebook, I was contacted and asked to speak at a protest outside BBC Media City, Manchester, to show our outrage at the clear misinformation and pro-Israeli bias. The protest was attended by around 5,000 people and I can assure you - we were very loud. The BBC reported the protest, as a short paragraph stating that the protest was against the Israeli attack on it's website, but still, we had nothing on the mainstream news. You really must question, why the world's media still remains silent when mass, spontaneous demonstrations have been gathering momentum all over the globe, protesting at the Israeli attack. If there is a large demonstration anywhere, the media is there, on the ground, in the thick of it, giving us minute-by-minute reports. So why the silence? This is not a couple of small protests, this is a global outpouring of humanity towards the Palestinian people, surely - a mass global movement is worthy of reporting. At the heart of the matter, lies the ‘no-criticism-of-Israel’ policy, which

appears to have been adopted by both the world's governments and mainstream media with equal guilt. What makes Israel so special? Why is it that we are allowed to criticise every other country on the planet, yet criticism of Israel is actively suppressed? Without entering into the realm of conspiracy here, the fact of the matter is, that Israeli lobbies are a powerful force, within most governments, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in the U.S.A. and the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BDBJ) in Britain for example, fighting for the rights of the Zionist state, behind the closed doors of OUR government's conference rooms. Our governments put the interests of Israel, before those of it's own people, and that of the Palestinians, and now they are actively censoring the Global Media. Frustrated BBC journalists had to resort to tweeting pictures of the protests below their offices at BBC headquarters in London. It is a most disturbing turn of events, and those which must be addressed. We want a free press, not a Zionist press.

Dementia Friends Public Health England have teamed up with a leading health charity to launch a new campaign to tackle one of the biggest health issues facing the country, and a growing issue for ethnic minority communities. Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Dementia Friends’ initiative aims to give people understanding of dementia and encourage a whole society response to enable people with the condition to live well. Of the 665,000 people in England and Wales living with dementia, it is estimated that approximately 25,000 are from ethnic minority communities. This figure is expected to rise significantly as the ethnic minority population ages. By 2026 it is likely to have doubled to nearly 50,000 and by 2051 to over 172,000 – representing a seven-fold increase in 40 years. The Dementia Friends campaign aims to give people an understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia, dispel common myths and stigma associated with the disease and show how others can make a real difference to people living with the condition. Mohammed Muhith, BME Development Officer at the Alzheimer’s Society, explained why it was so important to become educated on the condition. “Statistics out there show that the number of people affected by dementia in BME communities is only increasing,” he said. “Dementia Friends is a three-year programme, supported by Public Health, and we would like one-million ‘friends’ to join in. “The friends will have a better understanding of what dementia is and what symptoms to look out for.” If you would like to become a Dementia Friend, please visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk.

Overseas Victoria Cross recipients honoured for WW1 Centenary

Baroness Warsi unveils plaques commemorating 175 men from overseas who were awarded the Victoria Cross during World War One

VIPs from across Britain came together at Lancaster House last week to witness the historic display of commemoration plaques for the 175 men for services in the First World War. As part of the Government’s First World War Centenary Programme, HRH The Duke of Kent and Senior Minister of State in the Foreign Office and Minister for Faith and Communities, Baroness Warsi, unveiled the plaques for the overseas men who won Britain’s highest military honour. The 11 bronze memorial plaques, which were displayed to the public for the first time at an event at Lancaster House, London, are inscribed with the names of the Victoria Cross holders and will be sent to the recipients’ home countries. There they will displayed at a prominent location as a symbol of the gratitude that is felt towards them by the people of the United Kingdom. Two of only nine Victoria Cross holders alive in the world today, Sgt Johnson Beharry VC and Australian Cpl Mark Donaldson VC, also attended the launch of the plaques. The day, celebrating armed forces, past, present and future, was attended in good spirits across the whole of the UK, with an abseil down the front of Leeds Town Hall kicking off celebrations in the Yorkshire city. great,” he said. “We held a march and also had our own stall for the Malayan and Borneo Veterans Association which showcased our latest lottery funded project. “Experiences have been taken down from members who have been interviewed and they, together with pictures and photos from the war, were on display. “I played rugby in Brunei whilst I was over there serving and someone actually knew the mosque which was there. His father said

‘you saved our country’ and that kind of praise is just amazing really.” Also marching on the day was Mohammed Saddique, from Roundhay, whose father, Goolam Hussein Bawa, fought with the Merchant Navy from 1903 at the age of just 19. His legacy lives on through his son, who said he was very proud of everything his father did for the country. “I think my father is still alive in me today,” he said. “In my mind he

is still here and it makes me very proud to carry his name on. “I also wanted to say a message to the younger generations. Consider an army career. “Not only are you helping the rest of the world but you are showing yourself to be a brave and proud soldier and eventually a proud veteran.” Armed Forces Day Leeds took part on 28th June and was supported by the Ministry of Defence and Leeds City Council.

A Lancashire based charity has been helping to fill the bookcases of some of the less fortunate pupils around the world with the help of some willing local students. The Tauheedul Charity and Book Aid International had initially teamed up to inspire young readers in the developing world by establishing ten portable school libraries on Pemba Island, Tanzania. Now their latest project, launched on World Book Day 2014, hopes to expand the initiative to a further five schools via a ‘School Library in a Box’ scheme. Last week pupils and staff from Blackburn’s Tauheedul Islam Boys' High School presented a cheque worth £13,500 to Book Aid International. The people of Pemba rely primarily on subsistence farming and small-scale fishing for a living, with many surviving on less than one pound a day. There is only one public library on the island, serving the population of over 300,000. Many schools don’t have any books, let alone a library, with many children on Pemba never visiting a library or reading a storybook before the School Library in a Box scheme was introduced. The project provides

portable libraries containing books in Swahili and English to schools that do not have a building that can house a library. Director of Tauheedul Charity, Hamid Patel said: “At Tauheedul, we are passionate about making a difference to the lives of children through education. “Our partnership with Book Aid International is underpinned by a vision of more children in Africa learning to read and having all the opportunities that this brings. “The Zanzibar School Library in a Box programme is an example of how our partnership is enhancing the lives of thousands of children and young people.” Director of Book Aid International, Alison Hubert added: “Book Aid International’s vision is of vibrant libraries that inspire readers and empower communities. “A School Library in a Box is just such a library – filled with all kinds of books in the children’s mother tongue and in English. “With this support from Tauheedul Charity we are able to provide thousands more children in Zanzibar with the books they need to flourish at school and beyond.”

BATTLE: Missiles continue to be exchanged between Palestine and Israel in the ongoing Gaza battle

More than 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced following the ongoing unrest in Gaza with hundreds also killed by the onslaught of missile attacks. Earlier this week, the Israeli army began a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip which has already resulted in the death of at least 24 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier. Also among the dead are three Palestinian children, killed by Israeli tank fire in North Gaza according to medics. Their deaths take the total number of Palestinian civilians who have lost their lives to 279, with just one Israeli citizen also being killed. Explaining why the ground offensive had been approved, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said: “Last night [Thursday] our forces began a ground operation to hit the terror tunnels crossing from Gaza into Israel's territory. “It is not possible to deal with the tunnels only from the air.” He added: “My instructions... are to prepare for the possibility of significantly widening the ground operation, and the military is preparing accordingly.” Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, has said Israel will ‘pay a high price’ for the invasion and the massive impact it has had on innocent civilians in the region. The group’s spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said: “Netanyahu is killing our children and will pay the price. The ground invasion doesn't frighten us and the occupation army will sink in Gaza's mud.”

Passenger plane shot down TARGET: The Malaysia Airline flight MH17 crashed over Ukraine last week after being hit by ground-to-air weaponry

A Malaysian Airline flight, carrying 10 British passengers, has been shot down over Ukraine in the latest tragedy to hit the Asian airline. Flight MH17 crashed in Eastern Ukraine last week as it was travelling to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam with some 298 passengers on board. According to the European air traffic control authority, Eurocontrol, the aircraft was flying just 1,000ft above restricted airspace when it was shot down by sophisticated ground-to-air weaponry.

A statement from the body said: “The aircraft was flying at Flight Level 330 (approximately 10,000 metres/33,000 ft) when it disappeared from the radar. “This route had been closed by the Ukrainian authorities from ground to flight level 320 [32,000ft] but was open at the level at which the aircraft was flying.” Investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the crash with both Ukrainian and Russian authorities seeming to point the finger of blame at the other party.

Many suspicions remain as to the culprit of the attack with some suggesting it was Russian backed and equipped Ukraine rebels. Nevertheless, world leaders have called for an answer and for the guilty culprit to be brought to justice and ‘held to account’ for their actions. Off the back of the crash, British Prime Minister, David Cameron, chaired a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra group to receive the latest intelligence on the disaster.

RIP Zohra Sehgal 1912-2014 One of India’s most beloved actresses of all time, Zohra Sehgal, has sadly passed away in Delhi at the age of 102. Beginning her acting career in 1935, the loveable character’s career spanned through eight decades with her performances on stage and onscreen entertaining people the world over. She had been taken into hospital after being ill for several days and had a heart attack on Thursday 10th July. Her prolific life saw her obtain some of the most memorable roles in Indian film history from her first appearance in 1935 through to her last in 2007. Tributes poured in via social media following the news, with India

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, leading the way with his sentiments. He wrote: “Prolific and full of life, Zohra Sehgal made a mark through her acting, which is admired across generations. Saddened on her demise.” In the world of film, actors also paid their respects to the star of such films as Dil Se (From the Heart) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (I Have Given My Heart, Darling). Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who played Sehgal’s son in the 2007 film, Cheeni Kum, wrote: “Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102 years, what a journey and what an immensely loveable co-star! Prayers for her blessed soul!!” Azmi Shabana, a fellow actress, described the veteran actress as ‘a class by herself’, whilst Gul Panag added, ‘What a legend! What a life!’ Sehgal’s amazing career began when she joined the popular 1940’s left-wing political theatre group, Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association. From there her acting roles began to blossom and in 1962 she made the trip to London on a drama scholarship, opening doors for appearances in popular television shows such as My Beautiful Laundrette and Tandoori Nights. At the age of 80 Sehgal returned to India where she continued to pursue her passion of acting into her mid-90’s.

Prices announced for sensationallooking Volkswagen Scirocco The new Scirocco, which made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, 40 years after the original, comes with a new range of advanced engines that offer up to 280 PS yet also promise fuel efficiency improvements of up to 19 per cent. Prices for the revised Volkswagen Scirocco, which opens for orders on 8 July ahead of first deliveries in October, start at £20,455 (RRP OTR) for the 1.4litre TSI 125 PS manual and rise to £33,795 for the 2.0-litre TSI 280 PS Scirocco R. Externally, the Scirocco’s shape has been refined and modernised and under the bonnet are six new turbocharged direct-injection petrol and diesel engines, all of which meet EU6 emissions standards and return between 67.3 and 35.3 mpg. All models in the range except the R now feature BlueMotion Technology modifications, meaning they come as standard with Stop/Start and also brake energy recuperation systems. The petrol range consists of a 1.4-litre petrol with 125 PS (was 122), and a new

2.0-litre 180 PS unit which replaces the previous 1.4-litre 160 PS unit. The previous 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS has been replaced with a 220 PS unit that is also 19 per cent more fuel efficient. The new Scirocco R uses a 2.0-litre unit producing 280 PS: 15 PS more than before. Two diesel engines are both 2.0-litre units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS, and up to 68.9 mpg. The 1.4-litre TSI comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox, while all other engines come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox with the option of a six-speed DSG gearbox. All Sciroccos now have LED tail lights, while the bumper has been reshaped to appear lower and more purposeful. Inside, the dashboard has been updated, with new-look dials and an auxiliary instrument cluster above the centre console, consisting of chronometer, charge pressure and oil temperature gauges – a tribute to the 1974 model. The entry level Scirocco comes with an RCD 510 touchscreen infotainment system with DAB digital radio with sixdisc CD changer, SD card reader, MDI

iPod and USB audio connectors and Bluetooth; air conditioning; automatic headlights and wipers; an auto-dimming rear view mirror; 17-inch ‘Long Beach’ alloy wheels height-adjustable sports seats; and a multifunction leathercovered steering wheel (with paddleshifts on DSG models). The GT model adds the RNS 315 touchscreen navigation system, 2Zone climate control and a whole host of other design details. The R-Line model comes with R-Linespecific bumpers and side skirts; 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels; R-Line scuff plates; an R-Line-specific steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever; ‘carbon-look’ dash inserts; and heated, electrically adjustable ‘Vienna’ leather sports seats. The top of the range Scirocco R comes with its own unique exterior styling kit; chrome-look door mirror caps; bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights; 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels; Rspecific sports seats; 10 mm lower sports suspension; DCC dynamic chassis control; and a colour multifunction trip computer.

Football project hits the target! Young people in Leeds have been winning praise for the way they have scored a huge success with a football scheme which is reducing anti-social behaviour, increasing community integration and reducing racial tensions. Over the last twelve months more than 500 young people have attended the sessions which run on Thursday evenings at the leisure centre. As a result of the success of the scheme, Mark Burns-Williamson, Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, visited the Halton Moor project on Thursday to meet young people involved in the scheme and find out more about the work being done by the coaches funded by Leeds City Council’s antisocial behaviour team. The project is funded by Leeds anti-social behaviour team and is giving hundreds of young people in this community the chance to have a good time, get to know people and maybe even pick up the skills to become the next Sam Byram, David Batty or Norman Hunter!” The sessions are supported by two qualified coaches and recently gained funding for a further twelve months. Since the project has been running, antisocial behaviour in the area has fallen to an alltime low, with young people on the estate becoming more integrated and racial tensions in the community decreasing.

Cycling for Palestine Fundraiser looks to inspire others with ‘fasting bike-ride’ Whilst many Muslims will be resting during their long days of fast, one Bradford resident is taking to the roads to help raise money for vulnerable citizens in Palestine. 27-year-old Abid Khan, from Clayton Heights, will be taking on a near 30-mile challenge as he cycles from Bradford to Leeds and back again. Having never even ridden a bicycle on the road prior to last week, the determined fundraiser decided to take on the challenge in hope of inspiring others to do similar feats. Supported by his wife and a group of friends, who will drive behind him in a car, Abid says he is looking forward to hitting the route next weekend. “The actual ride is just a week away so I would say I am looking forward to it but at the same time I do know it will be a big challenge,” he said. “I’d never been on a bike on the main road before but have been going out on evenings when I return from work even though I am still fasting. “One of my colleagues has even donated me a helmet and I’ve been offered another bike

He added: “This whole idea only started last week when I created a flyer and just shared it with some people at work. “Within four days I had managed to raise £1,000 just from my friends, colleagues and family. I had never imagined to raise so much and had set myself the target of £100. “I just want to say thank you very much to all those who have already donated generously as it will all go towards helping the people of Palestine.”

Pupils at a Bradford Primary school have been showing their talents excel further than just the classroom this past year as they stormed to a season of sporting success. Feversham Primary

Academy had entered a number of competitions at the start of the academic year and with a haul of trophies proudly standing in the school’s trophy cabinet it has certainly been a year to remember.
