The extraordinary journey of Imran Mughal By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

15 months ago, a cycling enthusiast from Leeds embarked on an epic journey around the world, and to make things that little bit more interesting, he did it all on a bike. 35-year-old Imran Mughal completed the 25,000 mile route, through four different continents, tackling every obstacle from tough terrain in the outback to gunshots in Bosnia. After being made

redundant from his job with the NHS, he decided to take on the challenge and helped raise thousands of pounds for Charity:Water, even paying a visit to the HQ in New York during his trip. Documenting his incredible journey through social media, Imran visited landmarks in all corners of the world from the Taj Mahal in India, through to Mount Rushmore in the United States.

25,000 miles, 33 countries, two wheels, one man The extraordinary journey of Imran Mughal Cover story continued The journeyman set off in May last year, and finally returned home to a warm welcome from family and friends on Saturday 2nd August. He has now been settling back into life in the UK and spoke to the Asian Express about his remarkable trip. “It has been an overwhelming experience and was initially just a dream for me a couple of years ago so to see it come true is incredible,” he said. “I have done long cycles before through Europe and down Route 66 in America but this has to be the most rewarding and amazing experience. “It makes you realise what is important in life and what isn’t. It humbles you to the core and filters you as you travel around the world.” Imran says he believes he is the first Pakistani and first Muslim to do the challenge and broke the record for distance covered on just two tyres.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

In total, 33 countries were visited with some taking just a week to cycle through and others over a month. Most travel arrangements were organised in advance so visas and passports were predominantly not an issue until Imran arrived at the Georgian border. “Initially I was denied entry to Georgia despite having a passport,” he said. “I came back eight hours later and approached the same people with a new plan, still with my legal legislation in hand. “I faced barriers of discrimination and broke them down through card magic and clever diplomatic talking. It just showed that their border was a complete farce because they let me through because of some magic.” Each country brought with it highlights yet Imran says there is one nation which stands out above the rest. He continued: “Without doubt my favourite country was Iran. It is marred with negativity yet I had heard many good accounts from travellers who went through the country before. “When I arrived, the hospitality was overwhelming. When you arrive in that country as a traveller you are seen as a gift from God. They cannot do enough for you.” Every night, Imran slept in different conditions, relying often on his tent carried on his bicycle. One night he was put up in a luxury mansion in Croatia and another he was being shot at in Bosnia. He explained: “One night we were cycling through this remote part of Bosnia and we needed some shelter. “At some point down this empty road we came across an abandoned house which only had hay and dried cowpat inside but we needed to get inside so just set up for the night there. “A little while later we heard this car engine outside and thought it was just going to fly past

but we heard it come to a stop and the handbrake put on right outside the house. It scared the life out of me. “We hit the lights and got down, and the guy starts shouting. We didn’t really respond and then all of a sudden he fired a shot into the wall blindly. “We were just shouting ‘tourists’, ‘we are tourists’, which eventually they understood and insisted we could stay but we got out of there as soon as we could.” Imran finally completed his journey earlier this month but ensured there was one last extraordinary feat he completed before returning to Leeds – he tackled a thief. In Etampes, France, the returning cyclist saw a thief snatch a lady’s purse. Imran chased him down on his bike and even managed to reunite the victim with her belongings. The Roundhay resident is now planning on writing a book to share his experiences with the world. He can still be sponsored at www.mycharitywater.org/cycling theworld As for his next challenge, he says a cycle to Mecca in the next couple of years could be on the cards.

Cycle highway update

Bradford Council has been taking the next step in delivering the £29m CityConnect cycle superhighway between Bradford and Leeds. Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) have been advertised since Friday 8th August on the Bradford sections of the super-highway which includes Leeds Road, Leeds Old Road, Barkerend Road, Harris Street, Gain Lane and Dick Lane. The TROs also cover associated 20mph zones which are areas leading off from Leeds Old Road and Barkerend Road, and resident parking near Gain Lane. The cycle super-highway between Bradford and East Leeds is being planned after Bradford and Leeds Councils and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority together secured £18.1m from the Department of Transport, with further funding coming from other previously committed match funding projects.

Experience the seaside...in Leeds

The magic and atmosphere of a visit to the beach has arrived on a popular city square this weekend as ‘City Beach’ returned for a second summer season. Following a successful debut last year, Leeds own urban beach has once again pulled out all the stops to transform Millennium Square into an oasis of fun as of Saturday 9th August until Sunday 31st August. The official opening took place in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr David Congreve, and the Lady Mayoress, Janet Harper JP. A new feature this year is a traditional Ferris wheel which will overlook the real sand area surrounded with boardwalk style decking, deck chairs and palm trees Organised by International Funfairs in partnership with Leeds City Council, City Beach will be open daily from 10.30am to 7pm.

More energy, fewer bills

Multi-million pound investment in a wide range of energy efficiency measures across Leeds will pay big dividends for Council tenants over coming years, city leaders have promised. Over £9m is being invested so that around 3,000 properties can have energy efficient boilers, heating upgrades and radiators provided. Structural repairs and energy efficiency work for the two Highways blocks of flats are currently in the planning stages, but likely to gain investment of nearly two-million pounds. A range of further work involving replacement doors and windows, as well as roofing work, will add to the improvements that will see Leeds not only investing in the city’s housing, but helping reduce the carbon footprint of the city for years to come.

BARONESS WARSI: An act of defiance? Dewsbury state-school educated Foreign Office Minister quits government over Gaza policy

There’s been a huge debate on Baroness Sayeeda Warsi’s resignation as the country’s Foreign Office minister this week, with those who support her decision saying she acted with “principle and integrity” in deciding to step down. In the last few weeks, Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, has been slammed for not unequivocally condemning Israel’s handling of its attack on Gaza. Many MP’s calls for Britain to intervene on the Gaza conflict have unequivocally been denounced, but Warsi stands as the first senior minister to quit her post over the matter – something which has been largely admired and given her renewed respect. Her resignation letter stated that Britain’s approach on the crisis in Gaza is “morally indefensible” and that she didn’t think it was in “Britain’s national interest” to continue it’s current political approach on the matter. Many have voiced their disappointment over Warsi’s “unnecessary” resignation, stating that now there’s no Muslim voice from within the Government to speak, where others believe that she can do more from the outside. Warsi, a solicitor from Dewsbury, became the first Muslim minister to serve in a British Cabinet when Cameron appointed her in 2010. Whispers from many quarters, point that Warsi has been frustrated with her position in politics for some time now. In 2012, she was removed from her post as Tory party chairwoman and offered the job of “senior minister of state” at the Foreign Office, with the right to attend cabinet. Whilst in this role, Warsi took advantage of her candid manner and refined diplomatic skills to champion antiIslamaphobia anti-Semitism campaigns and supported international religious freedom. She also led on curating an exhibition to celebrate overseas Victoria Cross recipients during WWI for the centenary. Warsi has always despised the comment that, she was selected by PM David Cameron as a “token gesture”. However her departure from Government is a testament that she wasn’t valued on what she sees as a morally deficient Middle East policy anyway. Her resignation letter is a rejection of the prime minister’s position on the war in Gaza, and a stance that is generally supported by the masses.

Religious ‘support’

August 2014 - 1st Edition

DEVELOPED: Dr Sulleman Moreea, from Bradford Royal Infirmary, and Micha Sayed, Plyfoam owner, show off the SupportMan which is being delivered to mosques in Bradford

SupportMan to help tackle painful knees during prayer

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Ten years ago, a Muslim doctor operating out of Bradford suffered a serious knee injury meaning he could no longer pray without feeling pain. After ‘putting up’ with the condition for a couple of years, Dr Sulleman Moreea decided it was time to do something to combat his issue and so the ‘SupportMan’ was created. A piece of soft, lightweight foam which is put underneath a person during prayer, the device helps alleviate the pressure from a person’s knees

during prayer rituals. Developed by Dr Moreea and a professional foam maker in Mauritius, the product has enabled the Leeds resident to pray comfortably for the past four years. Dr Moreea explained: “It all stemmed from an injury I got whilst playing football, when I got a cruciate ligament tear and needed two screws in my left knee. “Thereafter I damaged cartilage in my right knee and required further operations, which ultimately meant that it was very painful for me during prayer. “Islam allows for people to use a

chair in the mosque but I felt I was a bit too young for that and I still wanted to pray normally. “The SupportMan has allowed me to pray on my knees again without pain.” The doctor, and Micha Sayed, owner of the foam factory Plyfoam, are now sharing the invention with mosques across Bradford in hope of helping more people find comfort during their prayers. With its lightweight material making it easily transportable and its durable surface meaning it will never need replacing, the device is ideal for all ages. “A little while back I was speaking with my friend who developed the device and he said

‘you’ve found benefit from this, why not share it with others?’” Dr Moreea added. “So now we are taking these SupportMan products into mosques across the city and dropping them off in hope of helping more people, like me, who struggle with praying on the floor.” Mr Sayed whose factory runs in Mauritius, and was the key designer behind the SupportMan. He explained further why it was important to ensure the device is able to be used by all Muslims. “My friend, Dr Moreea, came to me with his problem and said he needed a product which could help take the pressure away from

PRAYER: Dr Moreea had previously been unable to pray on his knees due to injury yet can now perform the task comfortably

his knees,” he said. “From there we went through some design ideas and soon had an initial prototype which did the job just fine. “But, as time went by, we decided that it needed to have other properties which would make it suitable for everybody. “That is why we developed the lightweight design, which is comfortable and durable.” The devices have so far been delivered to Bradford’s Osmania mosque, Quba mosque and Abu Bakar mosque. If you would like to find out more about the SupportMan please visit www.plyfoam.mu or call into Sahara Pharmacy on Duckworth Lane.

Desperate Just six weeks to SAVE BABY find a KHALID suitable donor to save toddler’s life A 19-month-old toddler has just a few weeks to find a suitable donor for a life-saving transplant. Little Khalid Adam, from Coventry, has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - a rare form of blood cancer and has been placed on the bone marrow transplant list. Khalid was born a healthy baby in December 2012, but sadly, the family’s world collapsed when he suddenly came down with fever like symptoms at four months old. Originally he was treated for pneumonia but around a week later, Khalid developed a lump and blisters in his groin area and so was readmitted to Coventry’s University Hospital.

Khalid is less likely to find a 100 per cent match because he is mixed race - his mum is white and his dad is Asian and there’s a huge underrepresentation of ethnic minorities on the donor register With dad Isa Adam at his side, Khalid was transferred urgently over to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the rare blood cancer. The toddler was given a five-month course of chemotherapy in June last year and returned home at the end of November 2013. “At the end of Khalid’s treatment, we were told that he had a 70 per cent chance of relapse,” says mum Tracy Kyberd. “We saw the 30 per cent chance he had of making it through and were so happy. “We celebrated Khalid’s birthday at home and everything was going fine. We even booked a holiday to go away this month. He looked so well.

Becoming a bone marrow donor is quite simple, registering involves providing a saliva sample and the donation procedure is similar to giving blood “But our world collapsed when we were told, during a regular check-up, that the cancer was back.” Time is limited because it is feared that Khalid’s tiny body may not be able to cope with the intense treatment needed to keep his cancer at bay. The devastating news of Khalid’s condition and his deteriorating health, including a hole in his heart from the chemotherapy, has left the poorly baby battling for his life and the family searching for a bone marrow donor. But Khalid is less likely to find a 100 per cent match because he is mixed race - his mum is white and his dad is Asian and there’s a huge under-representation of ethnic minorities on the donor register. Speaking to the Asian Express, Tracy broke down in tears as she told us how desperate the search is for a suitable match to save her son’s life. The family has launched an urgent appeal to members of the south Asian communities to come forward for testing and a 100 per cent match would give Khalid the best chance of beating his condition and going home to join his siblings - twins Alysha and Daniel, both aged nine. “I don’t know what to do and I know I have to be strong for the other children, but I see my beautiful son and what he’s going through and can’t help but to break down crying,” says mum Tracy. “Every day is the same as we wait

for a donor and we’re getting really desperate now,” she continues. “We urge people to come forward for testing. All it takes is a simple swab. “We are in dire need of someone who may be a 100 per cent match to step forward to save my little boy’s life. “It’s a shot in the dark but we are clinging onto the hope that someone will be able to help my little boy.” Becoming a bone marrow donor is quite simple. Registering simply involves providing a saliva sample and the donation procedure is usually similar to giving blood.

To find out how you can help little Khalid, please go to blood cancer charities ‘Anthony Nolan’ and ‘Delete Blood Cancer UK’ at www.anthonynolan.org and www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk

McDonald’s Boycott: Over zealous campaigners requested to be peaceful

PROTEST: Campaigners have been gathering outside several McDonalds restaurants over the past month in an attempt to get a public boycott on the fast food giants

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

CAMPAIGNER: Jam Khan backs the boycotting yet insists there is no place for violence or intimidation to patrons of the outlets

An awareness campaign outside a Bradford McDonalds this past week has been met with some scrutiny after members of the public claimed they were ‘intimidated not informed’ by protestors. Groups have been gathering outside the establishments in recent weeks in an attempt to get others to boycott the fast food giants due to their alleged ties with Israel. Support has been received in the bountiful with statistics showing a clear downward trend in McDonalds share prices since last month. Yet, in what was supposed to be an

awareness project, members of some group’s have been called ‘intimidating’ at times by some customers who have visited the sites. One patron told the Asian Express that she had called into the Leeds Road site to pick up a milkshake for her eight-year-old daughter when she was ‘harassed, shouted and sworn at’ by a group of 20 young men and boys. She wrote on Facebook: “I respected their right and freedom to protest so why is my freedom not respected? “How do you think my little child felt - she was frightened - all she wanted was a milkshake during our drive back to Leeds during rush hour. “We are not in a conflict zone so why should I feel intimidated/bullied by anyone?” She added: “I'm disgusted that a group of Muslim men/people feel it's appropriate to shout and terrorise people who are going about their own business.” The group reportedly chanted such phrases as ‘shame on you’ and ‘go to hell’ to people who

entered the McDonalds premises. Protestor on the day, Mohammod Islam, says he just wanted to ensure their message was put across and said he would work to ensure no person is intimidated by his fellow campaigners. Explaining why the protest was taking place, he said: “We are here because genocide is taking place in our time and we want to make the wider public aware. “Every pound that goes into McDonalds is a bullet for the Israeli military and that is the message we wanted to get across. There are so many different outlets available with better business ethics, so why not use them?” In regard to the chanting, Mr Islam did acknowledge that some phrases were perhaps too intimidating. “The people that are here are not from one organisation,” he explained. “These kids are very smart, they have social media and have seen so much of what is happening around the world. “They are angry but the things

FORCE: Police were on hand to ensure the protest remained peaceful and handed out documents to explain the rules, some of which customers claim were not being followed

that come out of their mouths they don’t always know what they are saying. “I have told them many times but kids being kids they forget. I do my best.” Jam Khan, who is a big supporter of the boycott McDonalds campaigns, condemned any sort of hostile behaviour. She directly contacted the aforementioned customer to denounce any sort of aggressive protest. “This has really upset me,” she said. “This is a peaceful protest and our aim is to create awareness and respect everybody’s decision. “If people choose to go that's up to them, we have no right over any one - it's not a riot. No one should feel intimidated or bullied. “I'm going to get together with a few people and find a solution.” McDonalds is just one of the many companies which have been targeted in recent weeks by protestors boycotting major companies.

More than 70 percent of the 40 8 children killed in Gaza were under the age of 12 65,000 people in Gaza have se en their homes severely damaged or destroyed

DEC launches Gaza crisis appeal By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

The Disasters Emergency Committee has launched its latest appeal for people affected by the conflict in Gaza. The appeal was launched after hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes with many needing not only shelter, but food, water, household items and often medical care. There are now 65,000 people in Gaza who have seen their homes severely damaged or destroyed. Although there is only a temporary truce, DEC member agencies are rapidly increasing the level of assistance they are providing. Some agencies had worked through the fighting despite the considerable risks involved and others have responded when and where lulls in the fighting allow. DEC Chief Executive Saleh Saeed said: “After four weeks of

terrible fighting Gaza is on the edge. “Over half a million people have been forced from their homes, and one and a half million people have no or very limited access to water or sanitation. “Many people are living in terribly overcrowded UN shelters, but they still need food and basic household items which we take for granted. Many are in urgent need of medical care, but hospital supplies are almost finished. “Even before the conflict began the people of Gaza were close to breaking point. Now we are seeing a humanitarian emergency affecting virtually every man, woman and child in Gaza. “The DEC’s member agencies and their partners are on the ground but they need funds to meet the huge needs. They are relying on the generosity of the British people to make a difference in Gaza.” The DEC brings 13 leading UK

aid charities together in times of crisis: ActionAid UK, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision - all collectively raising money to reach those in need quickly. To make a donation to the DEC Gaza Crisis Appeal visit http://www.dec.org.uk, call the 24 hour hotline on 0370 60 60 900, donate over the counter at any high street bank or post office, or send a cheque. You can also donate £5 by texting the word SUPPORT to 70000 - the full £5 will go to the DEC Gaza Crisis Appeal. Donors must be 16 years or over and have bill payer’s permission. Temple Tales

Historical characters from the past that have graced one of the city’s most famous and historic homes are to be given a new lease of life on Twitter. As part of an innovative project set to be launched on Monday 11th August, users of the social network site will be able to take part and meet some of the people over the centuries that have lived at Temple Newsam House. Following the launch, people will be able to experience the performance on Twitter from 1pm on subsequent days until Friday 15th August. As part of the show, which will last approximately 20 minutes, the script will follow the conversations of up to 15 historic characters associated with Temple Newsam. Whilst some are comical, all will give an insight into life at the house and the social boundaries that existed in an ‘upstairs downstairs’ (master/servant) living. ‘Israeli-free zone’ Galloway investigated after Israel comments West Yorkshire Police say they have received two separate complaints from members of the public following a Bradford MP’s controversial remarks regarding Israel. At a meeting in Leeds last weekend, George Galloway, of the Respect Party, spoke about the current conflict in Gaza and Israel, declaring Bradford an ‘Israeli-free zone’. The comments were recorded on mobile devices and uploaded to the internet shortly after where they were met with mixed reactions. The video of the meeting showed Galloway saying: “We have declared Bradford an Israel-free zone. “We don't want any Israeli goods, we don't want any Israeli services, we don't want any Israeli academics coming to the university or the college, we don't even want any Israeli tourists to come to Bradford, even if any of them had thought

of doing so. “We reject this illegal, barbarous, savage state that calls itself Israel. And you have to do the same.” The original video has been viewed more than 41,000 times since it was uploaded on 7th August with Mr Galloway’s comments being met by an overwhelmingly bad response on social media. One person wrote on Twitter: ‘So you plan to return hate with hate, tell me how it works for the benefit of the world?’, whilst other’s compared his comments to those of Hitler. A West Yorkshire police spokesman confirmed that they

had received complaints which were now being investigated. A statement read: “We have received two separate complaints about comments attributed to George Galloway MP during a speech he gave at a public meeting in Leeds on 2nd August 2014. “We are currently investigating the complaints.” It is not the first time that Mr Galloway has made controversial comments in regard to Israel. Last year, he walked out of a debate at Oxford University after being accused of ‘racism’ for saying ‘I don’t debate with Israelis’.

Double milestone

More than 300 individuals have now signed up as ambassadors for the city-wide ambition to make Leeds the most child friendly city in the country. As the Child Friendly Leeds campaign celebrates its second anniversary, famous Leeds brand Marks and Spencer has become the 301st organisation to sign up to the ambitious campaign, which has seen businesses and organisations of all sizes commit to becoming more focused on the needs and views of children and young people. Pledges made to support the campaign include: building stronger links with local schools; arranging for staff to become mentors to young people in care; helping to promote and support foster carers across their workforce and; looking at how they can change their services to make them more child friendly. The campaign was launched in July 2012 when HRH The Queen visited Leeds and helped get the city’s child friendly city bid underway. Since then the campaign has gone from strength to strength.

Accounts closed

August 2014 - 1st Edition

CONFUSED: The Ummah Welfare Trust employees in Bradford said they were disappointed at the bank’s decision, pictured (front) Ashraf, (back l-r) Abdul Haseeb and Muazabal

Bank shuts down Muslim groups’ bank accounts Banking giants, HSBC, have taken the controversial decision to close down a selection of their Muslim customers’ accounts as they were beyond the company’s ‘risk appetite’. The bank sent letters out to

individuals and groups stating that accounts would be shut in three months, causing outrage amongst many angry communities. Amongst the organisations affected was the nationwide charity, Ummah Welfare Trust, Finsbury Park Mosque in North London, and the think tank, Cordoba Foundation. HSBC said in a statement that decisions to close accounts were ‘absolutely not based on race or religion’. It continued: “Discrimination against customers on grounds of race or religion is immoral, unacceptable and illegal, and HSBC has comprehensive rules and policies in place to ensure race or

religion are never factors in banking decisions.” Despite the comments, representatives from the Ummah Welfare Trust have claimed that their account was closed because of the current situation in Gaza and the fact some funds go towards projects in Palestine. Mohammad Ahmad, Trustee for the Ummah Welfare Trust, says it is disappointing to see the action taken and adds that it is not the first time in the charity’s history. “Our understanding is that the account was closed because of links with the Gaza war,” he said. “It has happened previously during another conflict in the same area so it is disappointing to see it happen again.” The charity will now be changing banks to continue with their relief efforts and Mr Ahmad says it may now be time to take

action against the bank. “Currently we are still waiting to see what is going to happen next,” he explained. “If we do in fact have to move banks we will because we will continue to support these causes. “Perhaps if people did boycott the bank then they would get the message that their actions are immoral but we first have to see what kind of support we get.” Also affected by the closures was chief executive of the Cordoba Foundation, Anas Altikriti, who not only saw his own account closed, but also his wife’s and two sons, aged 12 and 16. Mr Altikriti had been with the bank for 29 years, whilst his wife was also a customer for 19. He says he was offered no explanation as to why the family’s personal accounts were being closed and took to Twitter to share his frustration. “While one could see why my account would be closed, why my

wife and my 16 and 12 year old sons? #HSBC #Palestine #Gaza,” he Tweeted. “The only explanation that comes to mind is my work for #Palestine & #Gaza. If not, then I call on #HSBC to deny it.” Mr Altikriti, and those affected by the closures, have found support on social media with some HSBC customers even closing down their own accounts with the bank. Thousands upon thousands of students from across the UK were in celebratory moods last month as they finally brought their academic careers to an end at their graduation ceremonies. Photos to remember the special day were of course taken in their bountiful but one snap in particular had the whole room cheering that little bit louder. University of Leicester student, Asad Qureshi, from Pakistan, became the first person to take a ‘selfie’ on stage when receiving his degree from Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Robert Burgess. The 21-year-

old, who graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, used his mobile phone to take the quick pic which was met with applause from the hundreds of onlookers. The Rt Hon Lord Grocott, Chancellor of the University, in his closing speech moments afterwards described the act as the ‘first-ever’ at Leicester. Asad explained that it was in fact just a bit of fun and was delighted with the response. He said: “I was sitting with my friend taking selfies, when she suggested that I should take one

with the Vice-Chancellor. I accepted the challenge, but she didn't believe me so dared me to do it. Once I am dared to do something, I never chicken out, so I did it. “Afterwards, all my friends were calling me a legend and my family couldn’t stop laughing. It happened near the end of the ceremony and really livened up the room.” Asad now plans to work in the UK and study for a Master’s after a few years in employment. This year’s degree congregations were the final set Professor Sir Robert Burgess will participate in

as Vice-Chancellor as he retires from the role at the end of September. Sir Robert said: “Taking selfies is now part of everyday life and I was not surprised that it has now appeared in a Leicester degree ceremony.” When asked how it felt to be the first person in Leicester’s history to take a selfie on stage with the ViceChancellor, Asad said: “It’s just awesome, I can’t believe no one has done it before at Leicester and if people follow, I will have started a new trend.”

Dumped asbestos ‘endangers’ local kids

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A large pile of dangerous waste material, which was dumped on a narrow street in Bradford three months ago, has taken away local children’s ‘right to play’ according to a councillor. The site, on St Pauls Street, in Manningham, was turned into a dumping ground when a van pulled up, dropped off the asbestos covered material, and never came

PLEA: Cllr Ishtiaq Ahmed, alongside children and a parent from St Pauls Street, stand with the pile of waste

back for it. Now, councillor for Manningham, Ishtiaq Ahmed, says the waste ‘must be moved’ as it is endangering the children. “As a local councillor my concerns are that this is a major health and safety issue,” he said. “You have children out here playing on the street, cars driving up and down, all going over the asbestos. This is giving rise to dust particles that are then being breathed in by children which is very dangerous.

“To see this remain here for three months is just wrong. Children have a right to a safe place to play and this is taking that away from them so the local authority must take action.” The small street is not a popular one for motorists yet there are clear signs of broken materials on the floor as a result of the waste pile. Children often use the street to play games, whilst small pets can also gather the dust on their fur and take it into homes. These factors are only causing

more danger to the residents according to Cllr Ahmed who adds that sanctions must be removed to stop dumping in public streets. “At the moment people have to pay for bulk items to be taken away from their homes, whereas before they had the free bulk waste collection,” he said. “What we are seeing now is people coming around, saying ‘we’ll take that away for £30’ which initially sounds great because it would cost a lot more to get hold of a skip. The issue is that they pick the

waste up, go two miles down the road and dump it.” Bradford Council currently requires residents to obtain a permit to use certified waste sites, and despite the ease of use, Cllr Ahmed says it should be more readily available to all. He added: “We need to get rid of this red tape around the permits to ensure all people have easy access to dumping sites because ultimately, if not, it will just end up on the streets.”

Wonderful Ward Young people bring ‘arty touch’ to hospital

Youths in Bradford are helping to brighten up the lives of young patients at one of the city’s hospitals by bringing a touch of creativity to a children’s ward. The Children’s Ward Two at Bradford Royal Infirmary is at the centre of the project looking to engage patients with interactive design which will be seen by thousands of visitors every year. The sessions are co-ordinated by artist Stella Corrall and funded by Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity, with the aim of improving the environment of the unit‘s waiting area and post-surgery

lounge area. Art work will be displayed and help bring a touch of imagination to the premises with many design ideas coming from the children themselves. Head of Nursing Services for Children, Aileen Sharp, praised the young people spearheading the initiative for a fantastic cause. “Research shows that there are numerous health benefits of getting children involved in the arts,” she said. “We know that by integrating the

creative arts into healthcare, we can reduce the stress experienced by young patients, families and staff, improve clinical outcomes and wellbeing, and enhance the quality of service provision. “We can also significantly improve the hospital experience for all. “It’s great to see that young

people are leading on this project as this participation engages our patients and supports their wellbeing and recovery. “We’re also looking forward to seeing the art brighten up the walls of Ward Two as the work is especially for those children requiring ongoing treatment.” The arts project is also working

with young people from Healthwatch and Barnardos. The first arts session involved young patients from the hospital’s day case haematology unit, before, on 5th August, teenagers at Barnardos on Queens Road, Bradford, worked with light, colour and pattern to develop their own art for the ward.

August 2014 - 1st Edition

A teenager from Bradford was following in his brother’s footsteps last week as he was named Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet for the upcoming year. 16-year-old Abbas Younis was installed as the new representative at a special ceremony at City Hall, taking over the reins from older sibling, Ummar. Abbas, from Allerton, will be tasked with accompanying the Lord Mayor on ceremonial duties with reference to the forces, such as Memorial Day and the Trafalgar Parade. Both teens say they aspire to join the Royal Navy when they have completed their academic qualifications and their father, Tariq Mahmood, says he is delighted to see them progress in the Bradford Sea Cadets. “We are very proud parents at the moment because of what our boys have accomplished,” he said. “The appointment of Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet is a real honour and extra special because they do come from an Asian family. “I was a Sea Cadet 20 or so years ago but never joined the forces. Both Abbas and Ummar say they are looking to join the Royal Navy but not until they have a good education to fall back on.” ENROLLED: Abbas took up the Abbas, who attends Dixons a ing receiv after week role last Allerton Academy, has already l specia a at badge of office shown his charitable side, raising ceremony at Bradford City Hall money for the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and assisting with the Race for Life in Lister Park. SUPPORT: Project Coordinator, Tafazal Mohammad, says he is glad to see the law change to give a clearer picture of what hate crime a person has been subject to

REPORT IT! Campaign launched to see anti-Muslim crimes reported

The Leeds-based Building Bridges project will be running a four-month campaign as of August to encourage individuals who have been victims of antiMuslim hate to report the crime. Following a conference held last November as part of the national ‘Islamophobia Awareness Month’, the West Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, pledged to look into recording antiMuslim hate within a separate crime flag under the Religion/Faith strand. West Yorkshire Police currently monitor and record the five strands of hate crime for mandatory reporting to the Home Office. Strands are based on hostility or hatred based on a victim’s actual or perceived disability, sexual orientation, race, faith or a person identifying as transgender. West Yorkshire Police is now planning to include aggravated sub-categories across the five strands with Anti-Islam to be flagged under the faith category. This will be part of a wider Hate Crime publicity campaign to be launched in Autumn 2014. Tafazal Mohammad, Project Coordinator said: “This is great news for victims and we

want to ensure that the general public are now made aware of the new categories and that this increases their confidence in reporting hate crime.” A campaign has now been launched called: ‘Report It!’ which will continue for the next four months leading up to Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) in November. Whilst IAM saw a conference and an exhibition in Leeds last year, this year talks and local exhibitions are also scheduled in Bradford, Keighley, Huddersfield and Batley. “There has been a great interest from Muslim individuals and organisations to do something on a larger scale this year across West Yorkshire,” Mr Mohammad added. “This interest and concern for the rise in anti-Muslim hate crime has led to the formation of the ‘Muslim Community Safety Forum’. MCSF aims to primarily look at how Islamophobia can be addressed across West Yorkshire.” The Building Bridges, is a project developed by Hamara and one of twelve projects funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust aimed at addressing the concept of Islamophobia across Leeds.

Local CYCLE: Naheem Yacub says he has never taken on such a cycling challenge but looks forward to setting off this weekend

www.asianexpress.co.uk

August 2014 - 1st Edition

Top to bottom By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

An amateur cyclist from Leeds is about to embark on the longest ride of his life this weekend as he completes the uphill route from Lands End to John O’Groats for charity. Naheem Yacub will be completing the 800-plus mile journey over a ten-totwelve day period in the latest of his own personal challenges. This year, the local barber set himself the task of covering the distance from the UK to Syria – 2,313 miles – all in the name of charity. Raising funds for both the British Red Cross and Leeds Children’s Hospital, the mammoth bike ride will take him past the half way point on his way to the final goal. Speaking ahead of the challenge Naheem explained how he was preparing to tackle the ride with the help of a fellow cyclist. “I was initially planning to do the ride in a couple of weeks but I woke up the other day and thought, ‘this is for charity, I’m going to have to do it eventually’, so I decided to just do it now,” he said. “I will be completing the route with a man who has done it several times before and will be travelling around 100 miles a day to finish in time. “I know it’s going to be really hard but the people im doing it for will act as my motivation.”

Cycling length of country for charity Naheem has already partaken in a number of runs this year, including several marathons. So far he has completed the 26-mile runs in Liverpool, Lancashire, Bradford, Cheshire and even as far away as Paris on way to his target. Attempting to run a marathon a week in his own time, whilst also balancing multiple jobs, has been a challenge in itself but Naheem says it is worth it for the cause. Explaining why he chose the two charities, he said: “The Leeds Children’s Hospital is something that is on our

doorstep and I have had a couple of family members who have had their little ones go there. “They are fantastic and I thought it was about time I did something for them because they do need extra funding.” He added: “I also chose the British Red Cross because of their ground work in Syria. By donating to this cause the money will be going straight to work with those who need it most.” If you would like to make a contribution towards Naheem and the two causes please visit his donations page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com

Tackling poverty in Leeds

People in Leeds who are living on the breadline are being better supported to find a way out of poverty thanks to a range of new measures introduced by Leeds City Council. Poverty is the biggest challenge that Leeds is facing, and a year after the changes to the welfare system were introduced, more people are now in rent and council tax arrears than ever before. Nearly half of those affected by the underoccupancy charges were behind on their rent at the end of the first year, compared to 27per cent the previous year. In order to tackle poverty across the city, the council introduced the Citizens@Leeds programme last November and since then has introduced a host of changes to help people get out of poverty.

Delhi gang rape:

India outrage over fashion shoot By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A Mumbai-based photographer, whose fashion shoot showing a woman being groped on a bus has caused outrage, with social media users saying it glamorises the 2012 Delhi gang rape. Raj Shetye's images depict a model fighting off men on a bus, with thousands of people on social media stating they found the photos ‘disgusting’ and ‘horrible’. Shetye has defended himself saying that the fashion shoot was his depiction of the situation of women in India and it wasn’t based on the rape and murder of the Delhi gang rape. Atiya Zaidi posted on Twitter: “Shame on you Raj Shetye. The whole country spits on you and your team,” while Ashtosh Tiwari said “ India photoshoot on bus in very bad taste. Sick twisted person to recreate horrific abuse/rape of woman as “art”… shame on you”. Four men were sentenced to

EDITOR’S COMMENT

death whilst a fifth - a juvenile at the time, is serving a three-year sentence for the rape and murder of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student, dubbed Nirbhaya (fearless). Her ordeal prompted weeks of protests with people participating in the thousands, forcing Indian authorities to introduce tough new anti-rape

laws. Shetye has been hugely criticised after he published his photo-feature ‘The Wrong Turn’, with many questioning why and how the photographer had thought this subject was appropriate for a fashion shoot. Many have called for him to be prosecuted.

Andleeb Hanif says: “Depicting rape has been a heavy tradition in the Bollywood and Lollywood industries - mostly during the 80’s and 90’s. In fact it was so common that I remember that when I was a child, I could foresee such a scene as soon as the actress was being hassled by a group of men. My mother would hurriedly grab for the remote control to fast forward. I didn’t understand the full context of what was happening but I knew it was wrong, very wrong. We need to ask questions about why the ‘rape culture depiction’ exists in the first place.”

Market traders frustrated with rent rates

ANGRY: Mr Bhardwaj has been trading at Kirkgate Market for the past 15 years and has already seen his sales fall by as much as 70 per cent since the car park closed

‘It’s not enough’ Traders at one of Europe’s largest indoor markets have labelled plans to slash rent by up to 20 per cent as ‘ridiculous’ as stalls continue to lose business. Leeds’ Kirkgate Market has suffered a fall in clientele since a nearby car park was closed to make way for the newly developed Victoria Quarter. And now, with Leeds City Council planning to develop the existing site with a £12million refurbishment, market traders have voiced their concerns around the lack of custom they are receiving. Mr Bhardwaj has been working at the site for the past 15 years whilst his wife also runs a stall from the same premises. Following the closure of the car park, he explains how his stall has suffered a fall in sales by as much as 70 per cent with customers not wanting to ‘carry their shopping from one side of the city to the other’. “What they (Leeds City Council) have done to the market and what they are offering with this rent reduction is ridiculous,” he said. “They were warned well in advance that this would happen but they didn’t listen and now they are just trying to whitewash it all by giving us 20 per cent off. “We’ve lost so much business because people just don’t come in here anymore.” Mr Bhardwaj added that

he also believes that the fall in rent will be ‘pointless’ by October when the annual service charges are introduced. Also unhappy with the 20 per cent offer is trader, Esmat Mohamadi, who has been running a stall selling decorative furnishings and ornaments for the past six years. The loss in business since the car park closure has been ‘huge’ he says, adding that it is a ‘scary situation’ to be in. “We have lost around 50 or 60 per cent of our business and it is scary,” he said. “People are struggling to pay rent but we have no other option but to keep going on. “I don’t think the cut is enough because the rent is already quite high and business has always been tough. “Now there are no customers and there is no trade yet at the end of the day we just have to keep working hard to pay the bills.” The market will begin its refurbishment in August with substantial upgrades to all utilities such as the market’s Victorian drainage being replaced, ventilation improved and the sprinkler system and electrics upgraded. Affected traders have been offered alternative accommodation for a period of around three months in refurbished empty market units, on the existing

Butchers’ Row. Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for transport and the economy, described the refurbishment as ‘exciting’ and hoped the cut in rents would ease traders’ concerns. He said: “While this is one of the most exciting developments at Kirkgate Market for many years, we know it’s going to be a challenge. “As well as being about the refurbishment of a much loved Leeds landmark, it’s also about people and their livelihoods and the longterm commercial success of the market. “We’re determined to find the right balance that allows businesses to trade while working on the fabric of the building and keeping the long-term goal in mind. “We’re listening to traders’ concerns, both in respect of changes already experienced and what is yet to come, and that is why we’re proposing a year-long cut to rents.” He added: “We need to be realistic about what we can achieve in managing the refurbishment of a historic building in a live market environment. “The most effective and efficient way to get works done on fish and game row is to do it all in one go. Relocating traders for around three months whilst keeping them in the market where customers can find them, is a practical solution.”

Beauty Top Tips How to achieve the best results from Waxing

One of the best ways to permanently remove hair is to opt for Laser Hair Removal where pulses of laser light destroy the hair follicle. However this can be a length & expensive process and in some cases it does not suit every individuals skin. For this reason, Waxing is one of the best ways of removing unwanted hair, and when done correctly can produce amazing results! Waxing effectively pulls the hair out from the root, therefore results last longer than some other methods of hair removal such as shaving which simply break the hair off at the surface of the skin. Depending on the individual and the area of the body, waxing can last for up to 6 weeks. Waxing also removes the top layer of dead skin cells so it also exfoliates leaving the skin brighter and smoother. Also after a prolonged period of continuous waxing, hairs reduce, become thinner and for some people stop growing permanently. Follow these tips to make sure you get the best results!

1) Make sure the treatment is carried out by a professional & qualified therapist as using the wrong techniques & products can cause hairs to break and produce less effective results which are no better than shaving. Hair can grow back after a couple of days due to using the wrong waxing technique!

City Centre Branch, Kirkgate (Next to McDonald’s) 14 Legrams Lane, Bradford BD7 1ND

2) Choose a wax that is suited to your skin type as this reduces irritation and protects your skin from having a negative reaction to waxing. At Prity- Hair, Beauty & Spa you can choose from four different types of wax specifically designed to work with different skin types to achieve optimum results!

3) Invest time into exfoliating your skin before & after waxing as this will remove dead skin cells making it easier for the wax to stick to the hairs and pull them out without breakage. This produces a smoother, softer finish and helps the results to last longer. 4) Keep your skin moisturised and hydrated as this reduces the appearance of ingrown hairs & red bumps on your skin in between waxing sessions.

5) Make sure to have regular waxing sessions to keep your skin looking smooth and hair free! As a rule of thumb:

- Eyebrows, Lip & Chin; every 2-3 weeks - Legs, arms & bikini; every 3-6 weeks

Hundreds of presents delivered over Eid

DONATIONS: The team of volunteers on behalf of Give a Gift handed out toys at Leeds General Infirmary earlier this week for Eid

Give a

Gift

With more than 800 presents successfully donated and delivered to three West Yorkshire causes, this year’s Give a Gift project has come back ‘bigger and better’ than ever. Throughout the past week, Muslim volunteers have been delivering the bounty of toys to Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Fund, Martin House Children’s Hospice, and, for the first time, Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity, as part of their Eid celebrations. An amazing response to the toy appeals saw almost twice as many gifts donated this year than last, as the Muslim community aimed to play a wider role in mainstream society.

Launched last year, the Give a Gift initiative was the brainchild of a group of community volunteers from Leeds who wanted to do something special during Eid celebrations Rifhat Malik, Give a Gift ambassador, has seen the project go from strength-tostrength since last year’s toy donations and explained the purpose of the event. “It’s all about giving something back,” she said. “We want to try and make people happy, even if it is just for a short while. “It is great to see Muslims helping people from different cultures and backgrounds because we are very good at looking after our own but not necessarily the wider society.

WELCOMED: Ben, Charley, and little Eddie, were thankful for their gifts handed over by Rifhat Malik and Faiza Rafique

“Caring is one of our core values and projects like these help us highlight that fact to others.” After seeing the huge number of gifts donated, she added: “We have well exceeded this year’s target and the response has been amazing. “The generosity of people is fantastic and it is quite overwhelming.” Toys were collected for children aged from zero through to 16, whilst extra gifts were also purchased on behalf of the charities. Bradford Royal Infirmary received two new plasma televisions, whilst a bunch of Kindles and vouchers were also handed over to the causes. Sharon Cheng, Director of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said the gifts were an amazing act of generosity and was thankful to be working alongside the Give a Gift team. “This is the second year the initiative has been running now and we have been involved with the team for maybe 14, 15 months which has all been an amazing experience,” she said. “At this time of year during Eid, when the presents are donated, it means so much to the children and their families, it is very overwhelming. “We are truly grateful for their support and so are so many of these families.”

A Tasty Adventure

No ‘soggy bottoms’ as Chetna heads to the kitchen

CONTESTANT: Chetna may be a fashion designer by trade yet will be one of the 12 amateur bakers taking part in this year’s Great British Bake Off

Award-winning project

A pioneering project to support disadvantaged children in Kirklees has received praise at national level. Kirklees Council has been honoured by Ofsted for its work in the multilingual community of Ravensthorpe by helping parents to support their pre-school children’s development of the English language. Ravensthorpe is in one of the most deprived wards of Kirklees. Poor English skills, limited time, family commitments and no transport were highlighted as barriers that prevented parents and carers from supporting their children’s learning effectively. This meant that children were starting school with low level language skills

which had a negative impact on their confidence. The project was launched to engage with a multilingual, hard-to-reach audience living in a deprived ward and to break down barriers to education and employment. Asian

An Indian-born fashion designer is to swap her needle and thread for oven gloves later this month as she prepares to compete for the crown in the Great British Bake Off. 35-year-old Chetna, who runs her own clothes label, moved to the UK in 2003 with her husband after attending university in Mumbai. Whilst the passionate designer had travelled a lot before, the transition from the hot to the cold weather, and from one of the most densely populated cities in the world to Kent, was a massive shock. Chetna says she used baking as a way of embracing life in the UK, throwing herself into learning new skills, and combining her mum’s traditional recipes and flavours with British bakes when she can. Kent has become home to the couple over the past decade and Chetna has now settled well in the

area, even running a social curry club every week in her home town. Her passion for cooking has remained and will be showcased to the world from next week. She is described as a creative yet meticulous baker and channels huge her artistic talent into her baking which she does for family and friends. will be Chetna competing against her fellow 11 contestants in this year’s Great British Bake Off which starts on 6th August on BBC One. All bakers will be looking to impress the ever observant duo of Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry as they attempt to avoid the dreaded soggy bottoms and earn the crown of King or Queen of the kitchen.

Cabinet reshuffle Business tops agenda for Patel The Conservative party’s first Asian female MP has been promoted to the Treasury this past month following the latest cabinet reshuffle. Priti Patel, MP for Witham in Essex, has taken on the reins of the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, focussing on tax issues relating to charities and the voluntary sector. The Tory rightwinger had first won her seat as an MP in 2010 and has spoken frequently about her views for a tougher stance on crime and immigration. In 2011, she caused controversy after stating that there was still a

place for the death penalty in modern society during an appearance on Question Time. She was promoted to her new role after Nicky Morgan, the former Financial Secretary to the Treasury, was named as the new Education Secretary. Ms Morgan passes the charity brief onto her colleague who says she is looking forward to helping the British economy. She said: “It is a privilege to be appointed to this role and to work alongside the Chancellor to build on the success of this Government’s economic policies. “Over the last four years the

deficit has been reduced, taxes have been cut and growth has returned to the economy. “The economy is in a far better shape than we inherited in 2010 and I look forward to supporting the Chancellor as we secure the recovery and campaign for a Conservative majority at the next General Election.” Other areas in Patel's remit include tax credits, child poverty, gambling duties and environment and transport taxation. The 42-year-old sat on the 1922 committee of backbenchers, before she was appointed to the No 10 policy board in 2013.

A helping hand for business growth Businesses in Leeds are being encouraged by the council to apply for grants from a multimillion pound funding pot to help create new jobs and boost growth. The Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP) Business Growth Programme, which is supported by the governments Regional Growth Fund, is aimed at small and medium sized business looking to invest in property and equipment or expand

their workforce. To qualify, they will need to demonstrate they will create jobs, have private financial backing and will support key growth sectors. With almost 70 businesses in the city already benefiting from this package and over 560 jobs created or safeguarded as a result, council leaders are keen to see other eligible enterprises take advantage too.

he Law Society has issued formal guidance on making a “Sharia compliant” Will. This initiative by the Law Society has come under attack by campaigners for secularism, who accuse the Law Society of assisting discriminatory practices which deny women an equal share and excludes “illegitimate” children or unbelievers. The guidance was published and distributed to lawyers in England and Wales to “assist solicitors who have been instructed to prepare a valid Will, which follows Sharia succession rules”, and would remain valid under the law of England and Wales. The Law Society regularly issues guidance about different aspects of the law for the use and benefit of its members. Lawyers are not compelled to follow such guidance published by the Law Society, however they are used as examples of best practice policies. The guidance contains statements such as: “The male heirs in most cases receive double the amount inherited by a female heir of the same class. NonMuslims may not inherit at all, and only Muslim marriages are recognised. Similarly, a divorced spouse is no longer a Sharia heir, as the entitlement depends on a valid Muslim marriage existing at the date of the death”. Charlie Klendjian, secretary of The Lawyers’ Secular Society, has called for the withdrawal of the practice note advising solicitors to draw up Wills in compliance with Sharia law. Klendjian has raised the prospect of a public law challenge of the Law Society’s powers in distributing the guidance. Klendjian

comments: “by issuing this practice note the Law Society is legitimising and normalising – or at the very least being seen to legitimise and normalise – the distribution of assets in accordance with the discriminatory provisions of Sharia law. This is a worrying precedent to set.” An online petition has been launched by The Lawyers’ Secular Society campaigning for the Law Society to withdraw the guidance. Labour MP for Huddersfield, Barry Sheerman warned against “laws” on this issue, instead he called for a joint investigation by the Commons Justice and Home Affairs Committees into the use of Sharia law in England and Wales. The guidance has been branded as “utterly unacceptable” by former Tory MP, Louise Mensch. President of the Law Society, Nicholas Fluck has responded to the attacks, describing them as “inaccurate and illinformed”. “We live in a diverse multifaith, multi-cultural society. The Law Society responded to requests from its members for guidance on how to help clients asking for wills that distribute their assets in accordance with Sharia practice”...“our practice note focuses on how to do that, where it is allowed under English law.” In defence to the accusations, Fluck added that the law of England and Wales will give effect to wishes clearly expressed in a valid Will in so far as those wishes are compliant with the laws of England. We at Blacks have a specialist team who can assist with the drafting of wills and also deal with any disputes arising.

Q&A with your property law solicitor

49

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to residential conveyancing.

SOLIDARITY: The campaigners came together last month in a unique protest which gathered international attention

• What is conveyancing? Conveyancing is the term given to the process of transferring legal ownership of land and property. Conveyancing can include sale, purchase, and re-mortgaging.

• How long does conveyancing take? The conveyancing process does not have a fixed duration. Much depends on whether or not there is a mortgage, the cooperation of all parties involved etc. A straightforward conveyance where there are no major problems can be completed within 6-12 weeks. However please note this is a guide only; some conveyances may take longer and some may be completed sooner.

CAMPAIGN: Hundreds of people lay in the road on Shipquay Street, Derry, in a protest in support of Palestinian civilians who have lost their lives, been injured, or displaced, in Gaza

100’s ‘lay dead’ in Ireland Visual Palestine Ciaran McLaughlin, Interfaith worker in Belfast

protest goes global

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Hundreds of campaigners gathered in the streets of Derry last month in a unique protest against the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Almost one thousand people came out for the march on Saturday 26th July, which saw members of the public lie on the ground, on Shipquay Street, to represent the innocent Palestinians who had been killed by Israeli rocket fire. The marchers made their way from Waterside Railway Station through to Guildhall, the same route as the historic 1968 Civil Rights March in the city, with talks presented from a number of guest speakers. Organised by the Derry AntiWar Coalition (DAWC) the event

caught global attention and was shared worldwide on social media as continued calls for peace in Gaza are made. A similar protest was held in Birmingham city centre just days later when a Sainsbury’s supermarket was forced to temporarily close with campaigners ‘lying dead’ on the floors inside. Meanwhile, dozens of protestors also gathered outside the store and plastered posters along the store front in support of Gaza. A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: “On the advice of the police we temporarily closed the store. It was re-opened for customers shortly after and trade was not seriously disrupted.” Since the conflict began in the first week of July, more than 1,700 Palestinians – mostly civilians have been killed whilst hundreds of thousands have been displaced.

There is a natural affinity with the Irish public and Palestine due to historical factors and events. I live in West Belfast and every year we have festivals which include information on Palestine and campaigns for them. What is happening over in Gaza at the moment is of course a problem but the issues are not that new. It may have only come to the forefront of the global news in recent weeks due to the conflict but it has been a testing relationship for a long time. I suppose here it is the majority of Irish Republicans who are more likely to be in favour of the Palestinians. They see this powerful country, in Israel, imposing an injustice on their neighbours and they don’t agree with it. The support they have been receiving in recent demonstrations does not come as a surprise because of the Irish history.

In comparison, 63 Israeli soldiers and three civilians have also lost their lives due to the conflict. On Friday 1st August, a 72-hour ceasefire was agreed between the two parties yet rockets began being fired within two hours of the deal being reached. It was initially reported that an Israeli soldier, Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, 23, was seized from a tunnel in the southern Gazan town of Rafah, sparking the resumption of missiles. However, later evidence showed that the Israeli soldier had been killed, with Hamas stating that there was no evidence to show an Israeli soldier had been ‘kidnapped’. Campaigners in the UK have

voiced their concerns over the coverage the alleged ‘kidnapping’ received from the BBC in comparison to the number of dead Palestinians. Arguments include the terminology used, with the phrase ‘prisoner of war’ said to be a more reasonable description than ‘kidnapped’. Protestors have also said the coverage given to the story was not in keeping with the true picture of the war’s real situation on the ground.

• How much does conveyancing cost? There are two costs – one is the legal fee and one is a fee for disbursements (see below). The legal fee will depend on the purchase/sale price of the property and whether a mortgage is involved. We are able to provide a fixed fee which is very reasonable and competitive. • What are disbursements? Disbursements are expenses paid to third parties and which are incurred in the conveyancing process (e.g. property searches, Land Registry fees etc). We have excellent contacts with search providers and can obtain competitive quotes for search fees.

• What are the different types of searches? The main searches include the following: • Local Authority Search – this reveals the property’s planning history and any future planning proposals likely to impact the property. • Drainage Search – this tells you whether the drains run into a private or public sewer. • Land Registry Search – this reveals if there are any undisclosed mortgages on the property. • Land Charges Search – this is usually required by the mortgage lender to ensure you are not bankrupt. • Environmental Search – this reveals if there are any waste disposal sites in the locality and whether there is any risk of flooding, subsidence etc. There may be other searches which may be applicable to your conveyance. Please contact us and we will advise you further.

Traditional Asian gift-giving practices examined

RESEARCH: Dr Amna Khan - a senior lecturer at MMU’s Business School has led on the study

The South Asian British Muslim community is being invited to share its stories to help influence new ways of building links between ethnic minority groups. A Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) team is exploring the inter-generational differences of British Muslims with a Pakistani, Indian or Bengali background through traditional gift-giving practices. Researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the differences through the years to provide insights into whether any changes in cultural traditions and behaviour are taking place. Results from the project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, could then help develop community engagement strategies through greater understanding of ethnic minority groups. Lead researcher Dr Amna Khan, senior lecturer at MMU’s Business School, said: “Many people

in the community felt that post-9/11, Muslims had received a lot of negative publicity. “There was limited information which acknowledged the contribution they made to communities and society in general. So a project, which explored how they gave gifts to people within their community and outside their community, was developed. “Britain is a multicultural society with many different ethnic groups and cultures. To make a society work together it is important to understand the diverse cultures and behaviours. “This study is important as it gives insights how communities can work together through the act of gift giving.” The team will conduct 90 oral interviews in community centres around the North West and build links with residents. They are also appealing for more members of the South Asian British Muslim community to be interviewed. The interviews will be stored in the North West Sound Archive. Transcripts and some copies will be housed in Manchester’s Central Library. The story-book will be displayed in the community centres involved in the project.

More time needed

Migration to Britain from countries joining the European Union should be restricted, the deputy prime minister urged Monday, entering a touchstone debate on immigration and Europe nine months from a general election. Currently, new members of the EU can wait up to seven years before their citizens gain the right to live and work in other nations in the bloc. But Nick Clegg, who leads the Liberal Democrats, junior partner in Britain's coalition government, is to propose an extension to this due to economic differences between countries, according to a released copy of a speech to be given later on Monday. Additionally, countries like Britain should also have the right to curb admissions if

too many migrants arrive once the time limit is over, the deputy prime minister will say. "It is only right — and I say this as a pro-European — that we reform freedom of movement to reflect these realities," Clegg says in his speech. Asian

TARGET: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency vehicle was clearly labelled yet still got hit by Israeli shells

University of Manchester graduate killed in Gaza A former student at Manchester University, who went on to teach nursing at the Islamic University of Gaza, has been killed after his United Nations car was hit by Israeli fire. Dr Bashir al-Hajjar was killed after an Israeli assault in the north of the region Beer al-Naja alongside his younger brother, Muneer. The pair were travelling in a clearly marked UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) vehicle when shells landed both on the bonnet, and in front of the car, en route to Dr alHajjar’s home. Both were killed by the blast whilst Muneer’s eightyear-old son, who was also travelling in the car, was

taken to hospital with serious leg injuries. Dr al-Hajjar, whose only crime was treating the wounded in Gaza, leaves behind his wife and 13-yearold daughter at their family home in Rusholme, Manchester. The 47-year-old was killed on Tuesday 29th July just hours before a second UNRWA site found itself under Israeli fire, when a school sheltering refugees in Jabalia was hit killing 16 Palestinians and injuring 90. Dr Ramy Abdu, the Gazabased chair of human rights group Euro-mid Observer, studied at the University of Manchester at the same time as Dr al-Hajjar and paid tribute to his close friend.

Afghanistan return possible

British combat troops could return to Afghanistan if the country once again becomes a haven for terror groups, the head of the army said on Monday. General Sir Peter Wall said he was confident that Afghan forces had the capability to keep the country secure after foreign combat troops leave

at the end of this year. However, if the situation changes and the Taliban insurgency gains ground, British troops could be required to go back in, the chief of the general staff said. “It is vital that Afghan forces continue to deal with any threat of Al-Qaeda's return to the country," Wall told the

Independence brings currency dilemma

British lawmakers have warned that Scotland may be left in a currency limbo if it votes for independence because of uncertainty regarding its currency. Indecision over what currency would be used after independence remains a major campaign issue just weeks before Scots vote in an 18th September referendum whether to leave the United Kingdom after 307 years of union with England. Britain's three main political parties have ruled out a formal currency union, but Scottish nationalist leader Alex Salmond has said he is confident a deal would be done and that Scotland ‘cannot be stopped from keeping the pound. He has been coy about explaining how Scotland could continue to use sterling if it failed to secure a currency union, however, leaving him vulnerable to critics who say he has no ‘Plan B’ for such an eventuality.

Clarkson’s ‘not racist’

BBC TV boss Danny Cohen has defended Jeremy Clarkson and insisted the under-fire Top Gear host is not racist. Cohen ordered an internal investigation into the hit show after a string of controversies which saw it criticised by communications watchdog Ofcom for breaching broadcasting rules over a ‘racial’ term used by Clarkson. The regulator decided the comment, made by the star during the programme's Burma special screened in March, was offensive. That came just three months after Clarkson was caught up in another racism row which prompted him to apologise and be given a final warning about his behaviour by the BBC. In that incident, unaired footage from the programme came to light in which he appeared to use the ‘n-word’.

REVENGE: Fiaz Begum Munshi wanted to punish Amjad Khan after he ended their relationship

A woman has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for the manslaughter of two children in Oxford in 1997. Fiaz Begum Munshi, 38, of Manley Road, Oldham in Lancashire, was found guilty of the manslaughter of eight-year-old Anum Khan and her 15-year-old brother Majid at Oxford Crown Court and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Munshi had travelled to the home of Amjad Khan, with seven other people after he broke off their relationship. Petrol was poured through the letterbox of the house, in which seven members of the Khan/Akhtar family had been asleep, sparking a deadly blaze. Fire service were called to a property which was on fire in Magdalen Road, Oxford at around 3.20am. Six of the seven occupants escaped from the house; however Anum died in the fire and her 15year-old brother Majid, suffered severe burns to his head and body, and despite being taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford died two days later on 28th August 1997. Searches conducted by the police would later locate two plastic bottles which contained petrol at a telephone kiosk near to the scene. Following the fire, Fiaz Munshi and others were arrested on suspicion of murder on 23rd September 1997. Due to insufficient evidence to charge her, she was released from custody and on 9th December,

Munshi flew to Pakistan. Just two days later as a result of new evidence a number of arrests were made, with six people charged in connection with the murder of Anum and Majid. In October and November 1998 they were tried for the murders at Birmingham Crown Court. Five of them, Alan Swanton, then 19, from Letchworth, Thomas Liedl, then 19,from Letchworth, Mohammed Nawaz, then 21, from Letchworth, Haq Nawaz, then 30, from Letchworth and Haroon Sharif, then 21 from Letchworth were convicted of murder and jailed for life. The jury could not reach a verdict on the sixth – Munshi’s sister, Riaz Munshi, then 26 from London, who was discharged and re-tried the following year, convicted of manslaughter and sentence to 12 years in prison. In the autumn of 2012 a member of the Khan/Akhtar family contacted Thames Valley Police and made enquiries about Fiaz Munshi. As a direct result of that call, enquiries established that information had been received in 2005 that indicated she had returned to the UK from Pakistan.

Following the discovery of this information the TVP Major Crime Unit worked with the Crown Prosecution Service to re-open the investigation leading to Fiaz Munshi being arrested and subsequently charged in October 2013. In a statement read after the sentence, Shenaz Akhtar, the sister of Anum and Majid, said: “I would like to begin by thanking Allah for allowing justice to be done. “We would also like to thank Mr Moore, Mr Roakes, Mr Kirby, Mr Storor, Miss Dactler and Mr Jones, the entire TVP team, the CPS, the media and all those who have been involved now and the past 17 years. “It has taken 17 years for Fiaz Munshi to be brought to justice for the killings of Majid and Anum. This is despite members of the Oxford community who have known the whereabouts of Fiaz Munshi ever since she fled the UK. “Finally after 17 years we can now grieve properly and visit Majid and Anum’s grave together for the first time as a family and first time with our parents. “Majid and Anum will always remain deep within our hearts.”

Halal burger case concludes

Inquiry into pork DNA in Muslimschool-meal announces its findings

An investigation into undeclared pork found in halal lamb burgers supplied to Leicester schools has concluded that no further action should be taken against the manufacturer Paragon Quality Foods Ltd. In April 2013, Leicester City Council withdrew halal lamb burgers supplied to 19 schools after test results showed up to 50 per cent pork DNA in a sample. Follow-up tests on this sample were commissioned by Espo – which provides school dinners to the city council - and also carried out by a public analyst on behalf of Leicester City Council. The results of these tests supported the original findings. The council took samples of nine additional batches of the halal lamb burgers which had been supplied to schools in the city. The public analyst found undeclared goat DNA in all of them but no undeclared pork DNA. Two samples of the halal lamb burgers taken from consignments at a Leicester wholesaler were also tested by the public analyst. Both of these samples were found to contain undeclared pork DNA and undeclared goat DNA. After receiving the results of the council’s testing, Paragon Quality Foods tested samples of frozen raw ingredients still in storage. The company's own testing also found

evidence of undeclared goat DNA but no pork DNA. It immediately acted to prohibit further use of the agent which had supplied the ingredient and the slaughterhouse from which it originated.

“Paragon Quality Foods is a pork-free site and has always operated the strictest of controls regarding the sourcing and production of its products. We are pleased that Leicester City Council has concluded that our company had exercised due diligence.” Leicester City Council has been investigating the findings with the full cooperation of Paragon Quality Foods Ltd over the last 14 months. This has included site visits, paperwork audits and interviews with key personnel under caution. The council has now concluded its investigation and is satisfied that Paragon Quality Foods Ltd exercised due diligence during the period in question. Therefore, no further action will result. Cllr Sarah Russell, Assistant City Mayor for neighbourhood services, said: “Officers have carried out a very detailed investigation. The company was diligent in its

produced around the time of the nationwide horsemeat scandal and expectations have changed significantly since then. “Paragon was quick to respond to this, introducing new procedures in its selection and traceability of suppliers, and in-house testing of the material supplied to it, early in 2013. “But it is still clear that more needs to be done nationally to ensure that the food is governed in a way that prioritises and reestablishes consumer confidence.” Metin Pekin, managing director of Paragon Quality Foods, said: “Paragon Quality Foods is a pork-

our company had exercised due diligence. “We understand the need for the council to act on its test results, particularly in light of what became apparent as the international adulteration of the meat supply chain. “In response to the emerging scandal at that time, Paragon Quality Foods introduced industry leading systems, including our onsite DNA testing lab. “Based on the independent analysis that Paragon received, we disputed Leicester City Council’s interpretation of test results which claimed the presence of pork DNA.

Leicester City Council found that over 40 per cent of 105 samples taken from local businesses contained meat from species not declared. In April 2014, a sample of Halal lamb sheek-kebabs supplied to schools from another manufacturer was found to contain over 50 per cent undeclared beef DNA. This is being investigated by the home authority where the product was made. Last year, the city council set up a new board to review standards and practices for buying food for schools, elderly people's homes and other council venues.

Boxing and the BME community by Dr Kamran Ahmed I'm a doctor who is currently volunteering as the Field of Play Medical Lead for boxing at the Commonwealth Games. It’s a sport in which I have gained hard won experience whilst working for the British Boxing Board of Control putting on professional shows in often dim lit, dingy and cramped town halls and sports centres across the midlands. As a result I was selected to be one of the medical team for the Olympics in 2012 and now am proud to be supervising the friendly games. As an Asian doctor I'm not a rarity - the majority around 65% of doctors in the NHS are from ethnic minority groups. However, in terms of volunteers in national sports, we remain under represented despite what we can bring to games. I also fail the infamous ‘Lord Tebitt test’ in that inside the ring I support my home nations of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. I'm a second generation British Pakistani who loves his mother tongue and I converse in it as often as I can. I also encourage my children to carry on this tradition so they do not lose their heritage. As a GP working in a diverse city like Wolverhampton I often converse in Urdu, Punjabi, Kashmiri and Hindi and patients seek out appointments with me for this reason.

I have worked in the same surgery for four years and after a brief exposé in the local paper, the patients soon got to know of my boxing work. They were, however, disappointed after London 2012 because I was unable to meet India’s boxing hero - Vijender Vijender - an unforgettable name. As someone with lots of rival Indian friends they'll be delighted to know at Glasgow 2014 I had the pleasure of meeting him in person - to appease the patients of course. Being aware of an athlete’s language and cultural needs is essential in my job and I think it makes a much more inclusive and representative games. I often find myself spinning into Hindi to counsel the Indian team on what they perceive as a poor decision or unfavourable outcome - helping them to get moving quickly through the shock, denial, anger, bargaining and guilt which are the seven stages of grief when you don't win. I find myself shouting at the Pakistani athlete in Urdu to gain their attention and prevent them from doing themselves any further damage - later I get them water and some fruit so their coaching staff can break fast for Ramadan. My qibla iPhone app even points them to Mecca for one of their five compulsory prayers. There are 13 weight categories in boxing and this year is the first games

to welcome women boxers. However, a big difference from the London 2012 Olympics is that male boxers can fight without head guards. The evidence suggests that the headgear doesn't make a big difference to the risk of head trauma and concussion and in reality these events are rare. A recent report into concussion reported 95 incidences per 1,000 playing hours in horse racing but only 13 concussion incidences per 1,000 in professional boxing. But while I haven't had to deal with a greater level of concussion the number of lacerations has been considerably more. Bouts have been stopped due to cuts and a number of boxers have failed their pre-bout medical based on earlier injuries That doesn't include the 17 years spent in either studying or working to gain a suitable level of experience to provide medical cover for the boxing at the games but it’s all been worth it. Dr.Kamran Ahmed is a GP in Wo l v e r h a m p t o n and worked with Sporting Equals at BOXING: Indian boxer, Vijender Vijender, stands alongside the Commonwealth Dr Kamran Ahmed at Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Games.

More technology than sleep

Britons now spend more time using smartphones and tablets, watching television and listening to the radio, than they do sleeping, thanks to the availability of broadband in the home and on the move, regulator Ofcom said on Thursday. Consuming media and communicating takes 11 hours and 7 minutes out of an average Briton's day, a jump of more than two hours since 2010, from 8 hours and 48 minutes, it said. Smartphones, which are now used by 61 percent of people, and tablet computers were behind the rise, Ofcom said, as they allow people to stay connected while on the move. New technology was also behind work encroaching more and more into people's personal time, with six in 10 people doing work tasks outside working hours and 10 percent reading and sending work related emails and texts in bed, the survey found.

Not every person can afford to buy their perfect home in the picturesque Lake District, yet one billionaire certainly has the funds to do that, plus a little bit more. Indian steel tycoon, Lakshmi Mittal, will be hoping to complete the purchase of his very own mountain in the near future after a bid was accepted. The iconic 2,850ft Blencathra

Mountain, which towers above the Northern Fells in the Lake District region of Cumbria, was put on the market by Earl of Lonsdale Hugh Lowther in May, with a £1.75million asking price. Funds from the sale of the 2,676acre plot will go towards paying off the reported £9m tax he owes from his father's inheritance, who died eight years ago. Mittal has reportedly lodged a bid which exceeds the market value and is hopeful of tying up the deal soon despite protests from local residents group ‘the Friends of Blencartha’. The group claimed that such a

sale would endanger the area of becoming a ‘playground for the super-rich’ and so they also put in a bid to secure the site. On Friday 1st August, John Robson, director of selling agents H&H Land and Property, confirmed the Friends of Blencathra were unsuccessful. He explained in a statement that the Lonsdales had accepted an offer from an unnamed party which exceeded the guide price for the mountain. It has now emerged the unnamed party is the Londonbased Mittal, CEO of world's largest steel-maker, ArcelorMittal,

and one of the richest Indians. The selling agent's statement read: “Prior to reaching this decision we had discussions earlier today with representatives from The Friends of Blencathra. We have taken into account both their offer and the fact that there is a significant shortfall between this and the successful offer. “The reason behind the sale of Blencathra is to realise capital for inheritance tax following the death of the 7th Earl of Lonsdale in 2006. The Estate's solicitor has been instructed to proceed with the sale and we expect the matter to be completed reasonably quickly.”

RECORD: More than 200 teeth were removed from Ashik’s mouth in one long seven hour procedure

232 Teeth, 1 Mouth

Indian boy has ‘world-record’ operation

A teenager from Mumbai, who initially sought medical help after a swelling on the side of his jaw, could not have been prepared for what was about to be pulled out of his mouth. 17-year-old Ashik Gavai had a total of 232 teeth removed last month in what could be a world-record operation. After being referred to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, he was found to be suffering from a condition known as complex odontoma – benign tumours linked to tooth development – according to head of dentistry Sunanda Dhivare-Palwankar. What was initially just a pain in the right side of Ashik’s lower jaw soon turned into a huge operation as Dr Dhivare-Palwankar explained. “We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours,” she said. “We thought it may be a simple surgery but once we opened it there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone.” After removing those, the team found a larger structure, described as ‘marble-like’ that was lodged in the jaw. It was eventually removed with smaller fragments being chiselled out by the staff. Ashik's father, Suresh Gavai, said the family had been worried that the swelling was a malignant growth. “I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai,” Gavai told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper. Dhivare-Palwankar added that the literature they had come across on the condition showed a maximum of 37 teeth being removed in such a procedure, whereas she and her team had counted more than 232 taken from Gavai's mouth. “I think it could be a world record,” she said. Gavai's jawbone structure was maintained during the operation so it should heal without deformities, the surgeon added.

India rape bill approved to try minors as adults

India's cabinet has approved a bill to allow children over 16 to be tried as adults for crimes like rape and murder. At present, juvenile courts in India can jail those under 18 for a maximum of three years.

The move follows calls for stricter punishment for the age juveniles after the 2012 Delhi bus gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student, where four men were sentenced to death with a fifth – a juvenile at the time, serving a three-year

sentence. The bill still needs the approval of parliament, but if it is passed, minors convicted in adult courts would face longer jail terms but spared the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Kidnapped teacher freed

A British teacher who was kidnapped in Yemen in February was finally released last month according to the Foreign Office. Mike Harvey, who was abducted on 12th February on his way from an educational institute, was at the British embassy in the capital Sanaa, it said in a statement. “We are pleased to confirm that British hostage Mike Harvey held in Yemen since February has been released safely. He is being supported by staff at the British

Embassy and will be reunited with his family soon,” it added. Earlier this year, the kidnapping was the third in Yemen in two weeks. Another Briton working in the oil business was abducted in February, two days after a German citizen was kidnapped. Kidnappings by armed tribesmen in Yemen are common although most hostages are released after a ransom is paid. The Foreign Office advises British nationals not to travel to the country.

Ebola Alert India on guard to tackle outbreak

Indian authorities have said they are prepared to deal with any cases of the Ebola virus should it arrive in the country, due to the large number of Indians currently working in effected countries. Almost 45,000 Indian nationals are currently living and working in the four affected West African nations – Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. 932 people have been killed by the

virus since concerns began to arise last month with the disease spreading on a daily basis. India’s Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, told parliament on Wednesday, that the country was prepared to tackle any sort of infection from workers returning from affected countries. “If the situation worsens in the affected countries, there could be a possibility of these Indians travelling

back to India,” Vardhan said. “While the risk of Ebola virus cases in India is low, preparedness measures are in place to deal with any case of the virus imported to India.” Vardhan continued to advise against all non-essential travel to the countries with extra procedures brought in to minimise the risk of bringing Ebola to India. Travellers between the countries will be screened and then tracked

thereafter upon their return to India. The vast majority of the cases have been found in the remote border areas of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, with the latter being forced to declare a state of emergency earlier this week to deal with the worst ever outbreak of the disease. Liberia’s health system has been described as ‘collapsing’ whilst some major airlines have now halted

flights to the country and others which are affected. In Nigeria, the first reported case of Ebola came at the end of last month when a US citizen died in the country after arriving from the region. A nurse who treated him in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city, also died shortly after whilst at least five other people have been isolated due to symptoms.

US authorise air strikes on Iraq Almost a quarter of Iraq’s Christian population are reported to be fleeing their homes as Islamic militants seized the group’s biggest town. On Thursday 7th August, tens of thousands of members from the minority group, the Yazidis, fled towards the capital of the Kurdish region, Irbil, after officials were forced to retreat by the Islamic State. It was reported that as many as 50,000 Yazidis were trapped in the mountains with the United States dropping off supplies for refugees for the first time since pulling troops out of the country in 2011. The first air strike on the Islamic state’s military occurred on Friday with US President, Barack Obama, authorising such action to prevent the ‘genocide’ of tens of thousands of members of the ancient sect. Across the country, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians and other minorities have fled from Islamic State fighters who have beheaded and crucified some of their captives and broadcast the killings on the Internet. In Baghdad, where politicians have been paralysed by infighting while the state falls apart, the top Shi'ite cleric all but ordered Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to quit, a bold intervention that could bring

the veteran ruler down. Sunni fighters from the Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot bent on establishing a caliphate and eradicating unbelievers, have swept through northern Iraq since June. Their advance has dramatically accelerated in the past week when they routed Kurdish troops near the Kurdish autonomous region in the north. The retreat of the Kurds has brought the Islamists to within a half hour's drive of Irbil, the prosperous capital of the Kurdish autonomous region and a hub for US and European oil companies, which ordered emergency evacuations of their staff. “Earlier this week, one Iraqi in the area cried to the world, ‘There is no one coming to help’,” said Obama on Thursday. “Well, today America is coming to help. “We can act carefully and responsibly to prevent a potential act of genocide.” While the relentless advance of Islamic State fighters has threatened to destroy Iraq as a state, politicians in Baghdad have failed to agree on a new government since an inconclusive election in April.

There’s a giraffe in the road

South African animal rights group is planning to sue the people responsible for the death of a giraffe that smashed its head on a bridge as it was transported in a trailer on one of Africa's busiest motorways. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two giraffes in an

open air trailer being driven along Johannesburg's N1 motorway on Thursday before one hit its head on the bridge. “What a weird and sad thing to witness. That impact was so shocking,” TV and radio personality Pabi Moloi said on Twitter, next to a cellphone picture of the

giraffes shortly before the incident. “Look how low that bridge is and how tall the giraffes are. Who thought this one through?” South Africa's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said they would be seeking to prosecute those responsible.

AGREEMENT: A new declaration was signed earlier this week which will ensure both of Afghanistan’s presidential candidates work together on the future of the country, (l-r) US Secretary of State, John Kerry, Ashraf Ghani, and Abdullah Abdullah

With Afghanistan still waiting to hear who will be their next president, a new agreement was finally reached this past week with both candidates agreeing to cooperate on the formation of a government of national unity. Following a meeting with US Secretary of State, John Kerry, rival candidates, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah signed the declaration meaning both sides would form commissions to work on the government’s structure. The power sharing deal, which was agreed by the pair during Kerry’s last visit to the country in July, intends to regain faith from the public after the last election was marred by widespread fraud. Both men claimed they were victorious after the final count, prompting a recount which is due to be settled later this month. Kerry told reporters in Kabul that this latest legislation was a big step forward for Afghanistan’s democracy.

“One of these men is going to be president but both are going to be critical to the future of Afghanistan no matter what,” he told reporters in Kabul. The joint-declaration stated the candidates would agree to a timeline for the electoral process and inauguration date for the next president by the end of August. Afghanistan's Western backers hope an audit of votes will produce a legitimate president before a NATO summit in early September. The United Nations has been supervising a full recount of all eight million votes cast in a June run-off vote. “This audit is not about winning and losing, it is about achieving a credible result that people of Afghanistan deserve,” Kerry added. The election was to mark Afghanistan's first democratic transfer of power before the majority of foreign troops pull out at the end of 2014.

Above average rainfall

The outlook for the second half of India's fourmonth monsoon has improved after some above-average rainfall that is also expected to spill over into next week, weather experts said on Thursday. This is likely to boost final leg of summer crop planting in India, one of the world's

big producers and consumers of farm commodities such as rice, corn, soybean, cane and cotton. Monsoon rainfall was 18 percent above average in the past week after rainfall of nine percent below average in the previous week. The dry start to the June-September monsoon season had prompted fears of drought,

the first since 2009. A weak monsoon cuts exports, stokes food inflation and can hit demand for products ranging from cars to consumer goods. India's farming sector accounts for around 14 percent of the economy, but two-thirds of the nation's 1.2 billion people depend on farming for a livelihood and more than half of its arable land needs the summer rains.

Plans were reported on Thursday which would see the current line, running to Tibet, extended to the three aforementioned nations, once

an extension to a key site in Tibetan Buddhism opens. The construction is expected to be complete by 2020 and will be a key factor in the Chinese government’s plans to boost development. The China-to-Tibet line was officially opened in 2006, and passes through icy peaks on the Tibetan highlands, reaching top heights of 5,000m above

fully cooperate with the Independent Election Commission in implementing this framework and finishing the process,” Commission chairman Ahmad Yousuf Nouristani said at a joint news conference with U.N. envoy Jan Kubis. The voting process has so far stemmed almost four months with the initial votes taking place as far back as 5th April. It had been hoped that the process would have been a smooth one which showed how far the nation had advanced since the days of the Taliban. Yet this has not been the case with the democratic process still apparently suffering from teething problems in the country.

sea level. The Global Times have also reported further plans in regard to current developments which are likely to open next month. Currently, the line runs up to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa but an extension through to Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Tibetan Buddhism’s secondhighest figure, is set to be completed. That link is also reportedly scheduled for its own extension during the 2016-2020 period, to two separate points, one on the border of Nepal and the other on the border with India and Bhutan.

Critics of the railway have argued that the line is likely to bring in migrants who threaten to disrupt the Tibetan’s cultural identity. The Chinese announcement coincides with a drive by India, under its new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to consolidate its influence with its smaller neighbours. Modi's foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, headed to Nepal this Friday with a proposed pact to help develop the Himalayan country's hydroelectric power potential high on the agenda.

Shak, from Manchester, has teamed up with

the multi-talented TaZzZ for his brand new single giving a modern twist to the evergreen classic and from the moment ‘Take it Easy’ was released it went straight to number one on the iTunes World Chart. And then TaZzZ has yet again showcased his ability to transform the traditional stereotypes of desi music by producing a perfect beat. He’s ultimately succeeded in giving birth to a totally renewed sound that compliments Shak’s exceptional flow and his unique style of storytelling. Shak says: “It was an honour working with TaZzZ as he is super duper talented and such a humble guy. “You have to witness this guy in the studio to know what he is all about and it was an experience I will never forget. “I wanted to give my fans something different to what they have heard from me previously and TaZzZ just switched up the sound and gave me a vibe that I was yearning for.” Commenting to the Asian Express, TaZzZ said that experimenting with new sounds and new talent is a real passion. TaZzZ says: “Producing ‘Take It Easy’ was a lot of fun, I wanted to make something quirky that would fit with the new generation and I am extremely pleased with the end product. “Shak is a very talented individual who is so versatile, the chemistry was on point and everything else just fell into place perfectly.” The song is available to download via iTunes and all other leading digital stores.

Muslim comedian Jay Islaam wins national comedy award

“Breakthrough Act of the Year” A Muslim comic bested more than a hundred other gagmerchants to claim a national award for comedy. Jay Islaam, who has been performing stand-up for less than a year, triumphed over dozens of far more experienced acts to take the trophy at the competition final in Nottinghamshire last week. He received a cash prize as well as the accolade “Breakthrough Act 2014” – as awarded by FAF Comedy. “It still hasn’t quite sunk in,” said Islaam on reacting to the result. “The competition had an incredibly strong line-up, including scores of acts I have admired for a long time. “This is my first major award, and it’s come at a time when I was reconsidering whether to carry on pursuing comedy as a career. “I’m now certain that stand-up is what I was always meant to be doing, and I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead on the comedy circuit.” The Breakthrough Act competition was open to comedians from across the UK, and the heats welcomed acts from as far afield as the West Country, Yorkshire, the Home Counties and Scotland. More than one hundred

performers applied to take part this year. The highest scoring acts from heats that took place in the late spring progressed to last week’s final, where they performed to an audience of more than fifty. Six official judges, including several comedy professionals, scored all ten finalists, with their aggregated scores deciding the winner. Speaking on behalf of FAF Comedy Clubs, Director Stewart Coleman commented: “Our 2014 competition was a closely contested affair that will likely provide the launchpad for some very talented British acts. “The final proved to be an incredible night of laughs and entertainment. Jay Islaam was a deserved winner – albeit by a single point!!” In the last year, Islaam has performed at some of the most prestigious comedy venues, and festivals, across the country including appearances at the world-famous Comedy Store. Next month he takes his first one-man show to the world’s largest arts festival – the Edinburgh Fringe. He’s already amassed a large online following and you can keep up with his work through his Twitter account @jayislaam.

‘Dard’ by Ali Romeo After creating a buzz in the industry with tracks such as ‘London Girl’ and his debut single ‘Mahi’, Ali Romeo is back in the charts once again. Ali Romeo returned to Australia after a promising start within the British Asian music industry, to work on his upcoming album, which is planned to be released later this year. The concept, lyrics and composition were all crafted by Ali, with renowned producer Kam Frantic creating the sound. “I’d say this song took no

more than seven days to write, because I have been through a similar phase myself. The melody and lyrics have been kept very commercial on purpose; for this reason I feel that lot of people will also be able to relate to this track,’’ says Ali. The concept for this song revolves around an isolated person who once believed in the kindness of humanity and had a firm faith that if you do good, good things will happen, but everything changes. “After ‘Mahi’ and ‘London

Girl’ I was busy doing shows all over the UK,” adds Ali. “However, I was more concerned about releasing my album. So for that simple reason, I took a break from touring, and came back to Australia to start working on my album.’’ The video to ‘Dard’ has already been shot in Dubai and Australia and compliments the song pleasantly. ‘Dard’ is set to release on the 14th August on VIP Records and looks set to be one of this year’s biggest ballads.

‘Swag’ with Kayrun ft Jaswinder Daghamia

This highly talented, London-born producer/musician has just released a massive dance

floor track set to have you boogying. “Swag” came about with a simple but effective hook, which

turned into a track when London writer Balkar Laltonwala built the song around Kayrun’s original take. Predominantly a bhangra track - this fun mid-tempo track has been sung by none other than Jaswinder Daghamia who has a few hits under his belt. The video was shot in Kayrun’s hometown of Slough, with his vision the video has an upbeat and fun feel to it being based around a house party which gets out of control while parents are away. A fun, light and humorous concept really makes this Ballistic Production, directed by Kully Ghataore, video stand out.

SURPRISE: Toyota Supra is set to return as a plug-in hybrid sports car using BMW underpinnings

New Toyota Supra Hybrid with BMW tech Many motoring enthusiasts will already be aware that the next Toyota Supra, which is based loosely on the FT-1 concept shown, is being developed in conjunction with BMW’s next Z car. The details of the new platform that are starting to emerge, however, may be a big surprise to some. That’s especially true of what’s likely to be found under the hood of the new Supra: a 4-cylinder BMW engine. According to reports out of Japan and Australia, the new Supra is also, definitely, going to be a hybrid. Reports indicate that the new Supra’s BMW-developed, directinjection turbo-four will be paired with new “super conductor hybrid” technology from Toyota, making the flagship sports car a plug-in hybrid delivering upwards of 350 HP (260 kW) in a lightweight, rear wheel drive package. That relatively low output puts the next Toyota Supra in a performance class below the likes of the Chevy Corvette, Porsche 911, and Acura NSX that the nameplate once did battle with. That said, it’s also a full 30 HP more than the last Supra Turbo offered, which should make it a capable performer in its own right.

The luxury British brand is offering not only considerably enhanced performance and muchimproved fuel economy and emissions, but also an even more honed, precise and responsive driving experience. With the debut of the new Touchtronic III eight-speed

automatic gearbox in both Vanquish and Rapide S for 15 Model Year (15MY), Aston Martin is improving every major area of the cars’ performance and fuel economy. The brand’s engineers have worked meticulously with technical partner, ZF, to develop the eightspeed technology and integrate it perfectly into the latest generation of the iconic and much-imitated Aston Martin VH architecture. The 0-60 mph times for both the Vanquish and Rapide S are reduced in 15MY cars: The Vanquish drops from 4.1 seconds to just 3.6 seconds (3.8 seconds 0-100 km/h) and the Rapide S is capable of the same sprint in only 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds 0-100 km/h) – also down by a full half second from its previous

figure of 4.7 seconds. These impressive gains not only ensure the cars’ exceptional competitiveness in their respective sectors, but also confirm Vanquish as the quickest accelerating series production Aston Martin in the company’s 101-year history. Changes to gear and final drive ratios allow the cars to be not only quicker but also more frugal, with reduced emissions too. In both sports cars the CO2 figure drops by an average of ten per cent – down to 298 g/km for Vanquish and 300 g/km for Rapide S. Economy is boosted to 31 mpg, on average an 11% improvement, on the EU’s extra urban cycle for both the Vanquish and the Rapide S under the same stringent test conditions.

Combined with a revised final drive, the ratio changes also mean both cars are, for the first time, now capable of top speeds of 200 mph or above.

A reduction in exhaust gas back pressure as a result of ratio adjustment and other changes also benefits peak power, which rises by up to three bhp to a peak of 568 bhp

(576 PS) in Vanquish, and two bhp, 552 bhp (560 PS), in Rapide S. Peak torque is up by 10 Nm, too, to 630 Nm at 5,500 rpm in all the cars. The new eight-speed Touchtronic III automatic gearbox is not only three per cent lighter than its predecessor, it is also packaged more efficiently occupying precisely the same space within the car yet adding two further ratios over the outgoing transmission. Touchtronic III delivers exceptional shift speed and moves between ratios as quick as 130 milliseconds – far quicker than even the most accomplished racing driver is capable of – while better gearbox efficiency allows more power and torque to be transmitted to the road more of the time. Gearbox software changes make for a truly comprehensive selection of available driving features such as ‘Drive’ and ‘Drive Sport’ modes along with ‘Paddle Shift’ and ‘Paddle Shift Sport’ options for more engaging, sporting, shift control. Away from the gearbox, 15MY Aston Martin Vanquish and Rapide S models benefit from the

addition of the latest Bosch Engine Management System. The new system, which delivers more precise engine control and seamlessly communicates with the new gearbox, receives its first application in an Aston Martin that combines the AM29 V12 engine and an automatic gearbox. Meanwhile other electronic and engineering changes deliver a

consistent GT character by perfectly aligning the chassis with improvements in powertrain performance and accessibility. Uprated dampers on the new Vanquish – 15% stiffer at the front and a full 35% stiffer at the rear – improve the dynamic characteristic of the car in line with its significantly enhanced performance. Rapide S, meanwhile, gets uprated larger front brakes. Both cars also benefit from a retuned brake booster and amended rear suspension bushes

that are now 20% stiffer than before. There are also subtle but important styling enhancements, both inside and outside the cars, that add extra visual appeal for 15MY Vanquish and Rapide S. Outside there’s the arrival of new ten-spoke forged alloy wheel designs, available in a variety of finishes, that not only enhance the cars’ looks but save almost seven kilos in weight versus the standard wheel. There are also new paint colour options including, for the first time on Vanquish and Rapide S, the availability of the special paint colour Diavalo Red, previously limited to the breathtaking V12 Zagato. Inside, the cars get new leather trim colour options including the contemporary blue-black Dark Knight, and bold Fandango Pink. Rapide S also gains the exciting option of a new Duotone leather seat finish in Sahara Tan and Vibrant Red, as well as a range of new headlining options that mix quilting with the finest leathers or Alcantara.

Bernard Hopkins: The man ‘Bigger than the sport of boxing’ By Khalil Alam

Khalil Alam

info@asianexpress.co.uk

At the age of almost 50-years-old, most sport men and women have retired from high-level competitive sport and are usually planning their retirement party or baby-sitting their grand children. However at the grand old age of 49, a man known as Bernard Hopkins (an American revert Muslim) is planning one of his toughest boxing fights of his life against the strong Sergey Kovalev.

A host of newly qualified referees will be taking to the football fields this season after completing their qualifications last weekend. Organised by the Sports Campaign Against Racism team (SCAR), with funding from the FA, PFA and Sporting Equals, the two-day project was developed in an attempt to bring more BME officials into the sport. From grassroots through to the professional levels, there is an underrepresentation of referees from different ethnic backgrounds. Last weekend’s course saw a whole

new batch of officials handed their cards and whistles, after completing a number of challenges on and off the field. They will now get the chance to referee in the local leagues next season with further progression available in the future. SCAR chairman, Delroy Dacres, explained why it was important to bring a greater diversity of referees into all levels of football. “Last weekend was a big success with every one of the lads who came down excelling in the course,” he said.

TRAINING: The course took place over two days last weekend with both on and off-field classes

“There is a clear lack of BME officials up and down the country. Currently there are around 30,000 referees and I would say that under one per cent of those are from the BME community. “This is something that SCAR is addressing and we are already in negotiations with other partners to organise another course later in this year, but we do need funding.” Wasim Hussain is a goalkeeper for a local side and also helps coach junior football. He says he jumped at the opportunity to complete the course and believes others would too if the availability was out there. “We all learned a lot of new things across the two days and the course itself was amazing,” he said. “You learn to appreciate referees a lot more and obviously learn more rules about football which you may have not even known. “In regard to the lack of BME referees, it’s not advertised as much or out in the open. The fact that this course was free as well was a big incentive for a lot of people. “If the availability was out there in areas where there are ethnic minorities I think we would see a rise in numbers.” Delroy added that SCAR hopes to continue putting on similar courses but needs funding to keep the projects running. “We do have other projects which are aiming to put young men, who are affiliated with junior teams out there, through their level one coaching badges,” he said. “We need help funding this from local businesses and hope to give people the chance to gain qualifications in the sport.”

Hopkins will be fighting Sergey Kovalev on 8th November 2014 and will, at that time, be aged 50 years. Having turned to professional boxing in 1988 after serving five years in a youth prison for serious crime, he’s achieved world titles, broken boxing records and financially secured himself and his family. Hopkins used boxing as a release and escape of turning away from a life of violence, crime and hopeless future. As a boxer he has boxed ring legends like Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas, William Joppy and Oscar De La Hoya who have all long been retired from the sport. The glove-game icon’s achievement include the fact that he currently is the oldest man to win a World Light Heavyweight Boxing Championship, but then has recently gone onto unify the titles. He has previously unified the world Middleweight Boxing Championship and stands as the only man to hold all four major world championship belts at the same time for a record number of years. According to Hopkins his longevity in the brutal sport of boxing is ‘displine’ in personal, training and business life. Hopkins has recently said ‘there are good things that happen in life and it is easy to stay on track and when things go bad, people go off track - but I have managed whatever challenges life has thrown at me’ and this includes the recent death of his mother. The man has physically preserved himself and improved his skills in the sport of boxing and life itself and adapted with the times making adjustments to cater his age and battled worn body

without limiting himself. The boxing hero is a testament to life itself and what makes us human and motivates us to reach for bigger and better things both professionally and personally. Hopkins has pushed himself to that next level and wanted to make changes in his life that includes turning his back to the life of crime and easy money. His next boxing assignment against Sergey Kovalev is seen as a dangerous fight. Kovalev is the younger fighter at 31 years of age and has an 88 per cent knock out percentage and who has a knockout number of 22 boxing opponents of his 24 fights that have all resulted in wins. An example of Kovalev’s punching power has been shown as recent as this past weekend when he only needed two rounds to destroy and knockout an undefeated boxer called Blake Caparello. This sounds like a Rocky movie! However, Hopkins describes himself as an alien who has come from a different era of today but happens to be here through hard work. Hopkins has proved dedication that has surprised many boxing pundits before by out smarting younger, tougher fighters who were predicted to beat him easily. A Hopkins win against Kovalev will mean another world title belt to his existing IBF and WBA world championship belts and more importantly add another chapter to his boxing brilliance and legacy that may never be achieved ever again.

IndiaPakistan football series to be played in India after a nine year hiatus By Bibhash Dash info@asianexpress.co.uk

The first IndiaPakistan football series to take place for nine years promises to be an ‘emotional’ affair for both sides, with the UK expected to bring in most of the eyeballs for the historic event. India will play host to their crossborder rivals in a twomatch football series in August, to be played in Bangalore on the 17th and the 20th, something that could signal a breakthrough in relations between the two countries. While regular games between the two sides are a rarity, mainly due to strained geopolitical relations, India did edge out Pakistan in their South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) encounter last year in Nepal. A series in India, however, is expected to yield passion tenfold, with experts in the UK and in India predicting a feisty encounter. Former India team manager Eric Benny believes the timing, more than anything else, will be a key factor, with India and Pakistan celebrating their respective Independence Days just prior to the historic matchday. Speaking from India via telephone, Benny, who led India at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010 and the Olympic qualifiers in 2011, told me: “The way they’ve positioned it, it’s near 15th of August. “They’re trying to bring in the emotional factor. “Playing Pakistan, it’s definitely going to bring in a lot of emotions out there. “Bangalore’s going to be excited about it, definitely. I will be going down for it and

we’ll all be supporting the national team.” Reports of a short series in the UK from a few years ago eventually came to nothing, even though India and Pakistan had last played each other in Pakistan in 2005, a series won by the visitors. While that has set things up nicely for audiences, cricket is the undoubted king in both India and Pakistan, and the UK could once again prove the biggest crowdpuller. That’s according to the founder of the Asian Football Awards and FA licensed football agent Baljit Rihal, who says: “I see no reason why the football event can’t become a regular fixture in the sporting calendar. “I am sure it would draw good crowds in India and Pakistan. However, I feel that the biggest attention will come from the UK where fans have been waiting for this fixture for a number of years.” The SAFF meeting saw India emerge victorious thanks to an own goal from Pakistan’s Samar Ishaq, though the former’s bid to win a hattrick of titles was dashed in an Afghanistan fairytale final. Following on from the events in Kathmandu, the August encounters have the added potential of revenge for Pakistan. Benny, currently overseeing grassroots collaboration efforts with French Ligue 1 side FC Metz, is not taking things lightly, adding: The results could go either way. “I was there during the SAFF cup and I saw the way Pakistan played. “They played some really good football. We got lucky by how we scored and they conceded.”

A knockout success

Bradford boxer’s fighting for peace

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A host of amateur boxers put up their gloves in the name of charity as a special boxing tournament was held in Bradford. Hundreds of people gathered at the Quarry Gap Pub in Tyersal to watch an action-packed day of competition, whilst at the same time helping to raise funds for the Resq Syria Palestine Gaza charity. The brainchild of local businessman, Gee Hussain,

spectators came out in their hundreds, despite the wet weather, to help raise more than £3,000 through the event. From aspiring amateurs to complete novices, the talent on show was certainly mixed yet that didn’t stop the day being held in the best community spirit. 500 tickets had been sold in advance and Gee says it was a great way of raising money for a ‘very worthy cause’. “When the crisis started in Gaza my friends and I did a

bike ride to raise money and we brought in around one thousand pounds which went directly towards aid,” he said. “After that we thought up the idea of hosting a boxing

The only thing that poured more than the rain in Glasgow was England’s medal haul as our athletes ran away with an amazing return of 174 Golds, Silvers and Bronzes. For the first time in 28 years it was England who topped the medals table, with their 58 Gold medals helping to propel them well clear of their nearest rivals Australia, back on 137. Glasgow 2014 always had the unenviable task of living up to the London Olympics just two years ago, and despite the withdrawal of several athletes before the starting gun, the Scottish atmosphere certainly made it a Games to remember. Even Kylie Minogue was on hand to help celebrate the success of the fortnight of entertainment, headlining the closing ceremony on Sunday night. Meanwhile, there was a historic moment in the athletics as 16-yearold Claudia Fragapane became the first Englishwoman for 84 years to

event and bringing the community together for a busy day of entertainment. “There were 24 fighters in total, and all of them did a great job for the cause. I would also like to thank Kelly Bateman and David Clancy in particular for their support.” In the main event, Kaks Anzar Iqbal defeated Umar Mahmood in a thrilling encounter with young and old fans staying to watch the full show. Gee added his thanks to all those who came down on the day to help make the event such a success. “It was brilliant to see all these people standing sideby-side, from all different backgrounds, watching the boxing and helping raise money for a very serious cause,” he said. “We may have had fewer people than expected due to the rain but that didn’t stop us from raising a fantastic amount.”

win four Golds at the Commonwealth Games. No mention of athletics is of course complete without a word or two from Jamaica’s own, Usain Bolt. The Jamaican sensation had come under some scrutiny in the early days in Glasgow after he was alleged to have made derogatory comments about the Games yet he was quick to put them rumours to rest. A crowd favourite and icon around the world, Bolt had come into the games as the poster boy of the competition and crowds were made to wait until the very last day to see their hero clinch Gold in Glasgow. Running the final leg of the

4X100m, the 27-year-old sprinted clear of the chasing pack to put the icing on the cake for an incredible fortnight of competition. “Other than the weather it’s been brilliant,” Bolt said of Glasgow. “It felt like any other championship. I got to watch a lot more sports and see a lot more athletes competing. “It’s always great to have fun with the fans. They made the Games what it was. They are so warm, even when I was cold they were always warm. “I want to say that this new thing about ‘selfies’, they are really making these laps of honour really, really long,” he joked.

MEDAL: After clinching the Silver, Ashfaq says he now hopes to go one better in the Olympics and win Gold in Rio 2016

Back page story continued

After taking the first round on points, the local fighter was unfortunate to lose in the following two, yet says he is proud of what he achieved and hopes to go one better in two years time. “It was tough but a great experience,” he said. “I got to box some of the best in the world, including two Olympians, and nearly all of them had a lot more experience than me. “I was a bit gutted at first to come so far and walk away with a Silver medal but as time goes on you begin to realise that it is a great achievement. “I got the opportunity to box on such a big stage and have now got my name out there.” He added: “I feel I have shown that I can compete with the best out there and now I want to go

one better in Rio and win Gold in 2016.” Ashfaq’s first contest saw him defeat Lesotho’s Neo Thamahane, before a bout with the host nation’s Joe Ham, finished in similar fashion with

the Englishman picking up a straightforward threeround victory. Next up was the semi-final clash with Benson Gicharu Njangiru, who should have won Gold in Delhi four years ago but was forced to retire prior to the final through injury, which Ashfaq once again dominated. It was only in the final that the local boxer lost his first round and despite his disappointment, he says he can be proud to have competed in Glasgow. “I had a very tough fight in the final with Michael Conlan and some people have said they thought I had won,” he said. “At the end of the day, he is world number two and an Olympic Bronze medallist so it was a good experience.” There were some controversial moments in the final two rounds yet Ashfaq added that he will only learn from the fight. “You could make some arguments that he was being quite dirty and could have been penalised but it’s done now,” he said. “You learn from it all and push on to come back. I know I can beat him on my day and I have the Europeans and Worlds next year and I am just going to show what I can do there.” After celebrating with friends and family upon his return to Leeds, the Burmantofts boxer will be back in his intensive training regime next month as he embarks on a training camp in Kazakhstan.

Bizarre qualification They were in, they were out, and now they’re back in again. If Celtic’s forthcoming season is anything like their Champions League qualifiers, their fans are set for an interesting campaign to say the least. After being completely outplayed over two legs by Polish opposition, Legia Warsaw, the Glasgow outfit saw their dreams of competing in Europe’s biggest football competition fall at the first hurdle. Losing 6-1 on aggregate, including a 4-1 thumping away in Poland, the Scottish giants must have been preparing for a year in Europe’s equivalent of the Capital One Cup, the Europa League. Step forward Bartosz Bereszynski. A player which no Celtic fan could have heard of before the game yet one whom etched his named into the club’s history books this week. The 22-year-old was brought onto the Celtic Park pitch for just four minutes on Wednesday evening in what would have been just a little run out for the defender as the clock ran down. The only problem was, he is not registered to compete in the competition meaning the dominant club over the two legs were forced to forfeit the game on Friday. Uefa punished the Polish club by awarding the game 3-0 to Celtic, meaning the Scottish champions progressed on away goals.

Ronny Deila’s men lost the first match in Warsaw 4-1, with their opponents missing two penalties in the game, and it seems that one ‘consolation’ was enough to see Celtic progress.

CHAMP: Qais Ashfaq clinched a Silver medal in the Bantamweight boxing at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

It may have been his first major senior tournament, yet Leeds boxer, Qais Ashfaq, certainly left his mark on Glasgow 2014 as he came home with a Silver medal. The 21-year-old had gone into the Games full of confidence after reclaiming his ABA championship earlier this year, and had his eyes set on the podium from the offset. With a selection of the world’s finest amateur boxers on show, Ashfaq’s credible performance saw him overcome three bantamweight competitors before eventually losing out in the final to pretournament favourite, Michael Conlan.
