Disgraceful Bradford ninth on worst served hospital meal list

Hospitals across the UK have been criticised after care watchdog reveals that almost half of all patients feel that hospital food is not good enough, and that some trusts are spending just £2.64 a day on three meals. NHS hospitals claim their own studies show that 99 per cent of patient meals are rated ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Now hospitals have been accused of conning the public with bogus claims about the quality and choice of food on offer to patients. Campaigners claim nutrition and quality standards are below those for prisons and Whitehall department restaurants, which must adhere to mandatory levels. In some NHS trusts, such as the Heatherwood and Wexham Park, which serves Ascot, Maidenhead, Slough and Windsor, less than four in ten rated the food as ‘good’, placing it bottom of the league of patient satisfaction. However, a survey of staff at its hospitals rated the food, which is prepared by outside contractors, as excellent.

All are calling on the Government to support a change in the law that would improve all patient meals by requiring them to meet mandatory standards, including quality and nutrition. Campaign co-ordinator, Alex Jackson said that it was time for the Government to come clean about the sorry state of hospital food in England and set mandatory standards for patient meals. Jackson said: “This would only

Relocation of Knottingley Library Knottingley Library will be relocating to Knottingley Sports Centre. The library will close to the public for four days from 2nd September as it will be relocating to a newly refurbished room within Knottingley Sports Centre The library will reopen at its new location, only a few metres away from its old location, on Friday 6 September at 9am The new library has been redecorated, with new carpeting, new shelving, furniture and a brand new layout.

Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Culture and Libraries, said: “By relocating the library, we can offer users improved facilities and longer opening hours. “We apologise for any disruption the temporary closure will cause, but hope all users to the library will enjoy the improved facilities when it reopens.” The mobile library will make an additional stop on Monday 2 September between 3pm and 5pm, and it will be parked at the back of the Knottingley Sports Centre.

Youth Opportunity Fund – Open for Business

Wakefield Council is working in partnership with the voluntary organisation Young Lives to give young people opportunity to be involved in more activities across the Wakefield district. Through its Youth Opportunity Fund, the Council is offering grants up to £7,000 for voluntary groups who work with and provide activities for young people aged 8-19 or up to 25 for young people with disabilities. Decisions on how the grants would be awarded will be made by panels of young people supported by Youth Workers from both the Council and voluntary groups.

A husband and wife gardening team in Leeds is beginning to gain a reputation for growing enormous vegetables. Pyara Sing Rehal, 74, and Jaginder Singh Rehal, 71, have become avid gardeners since retiring and now it seems their green fingers truly have a special touch. With cucumbers easily

stretching over two feet, it is a common sight to see these oversized vegetables growing in the Rehal’s greenhouse. However, even with the regularity of the giant veg, Mrs Rehal explained that she does not intend on growing them so big, it just naturally happens. “This one (see pic) has grown to about two and a half foot since May but we have had bigger in the past,” she said. “I don’t know why it is happening; we don’t put anything

special on them. They just grow in the greenhouse and eventually either fall off or we cut them.” The garden, in the Roundhay area of Leeds, has a host of vegetables and flowers growing, and has become a major project for the married couple of 51 years. Mr Rehal explained how he is very proud of his garden and enjoys seeing so many unusual sized cucumbers in his green house. “We are both in to our

gardening now, especially my wife with her flowers,” he said. “If I could afford a bigger garden I would have one just because of the amount of plants and food we grow here. There are kidney beans, tomatoes, apples, cucumbers, pears, courgettes, plums, mint, everything.” With no previous experience or training in gardening, the couple simply put their special abilities down to dedication. “Whilst people might go away on holiday for a hobby, we don’t.

We stay here and look after the garden because that is what we enjoy doing,” Mr Rehal explained. “Anybody can grow vegetables of this size, it just takes patience. For some reason, people don’t let their vegetables grow to the full size in this country; they just cut them off when they are still, in our eyes, small.” When asked what is next for the Rehal’s mammoth cucumber, they replied simultaneously: “We are going to eat it, of course.”

Yorkshire amputee to race to South Pole with Prince Harry Yorkshire solider, Captain Ibrar Ali, who lost his right arm in a roadside bomb attack while serving in Iraq, is preparing to race to the South Pole. The expedition will raise money for wounded British service personnel and Prince Harry, who is Expedition Patron, will be part of the team. Captain Ibrar Ali was badly injured while serving in the Yorkshire Regiment in 2007 but 18 months after the attack, he returned to Iraq with the Army and last year spent six months in Afghanistan. The 36-year-old is also taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro before setting his sights on the South Pole challenge. Captain Ali said: “I am continuously humbled by what the great British public are willing to put themselves through to raise funds for Walking With The Wounded. I feel honoured to be a part of the amazing group of people on this expedition. “The expedition to Kilimanjaro will help me to prepare perfectly for the South Pole Allied Challenge with the long days of trekking, dealing with the altitude and of course being a part of a team that will work

together to overcome the daily challenges that we will face.” The Walking With The Wounded Challenge to scale Mount Kilimanjaro will start on 27th September and will take nine days. Later this year Captain Ali and five other Brits will be racing the South Pole, competing against teams of wounded service personnel from the US and the Commonwealth of Nations, including Prince Harry. The teams will have to come more than 208 miles (335km), endure temperatures of -45C, 50mph winds, vast crevasses, crumbling glaciers and fierce snow storms while pulling pulks, custom built sledges, which weigh in excess of 70kg. This attempt to be the first team to reach the South Pole in what is set to be the largest modern day expedition of its type. Planning permission for a prehistoric-themed “Jurassic Park” has been submitted to Bradford Council for a woodland trail complete with moving animatronic dinosaurs. The idea comes from former theme park designer Christian Cristobal who moved to Yorkshire from the Philippines ten years ago. He worked for years as a landscape artist but felt compelled to return to his roots to create a dinosaur attraction amongst the woodland at Tong Lane. The park itself would not be affected by the plans, which would fit in around the existing landscape, and visitors would have to enter the walkway through large “Jurassic Park” style gates. The dinosaur sculptures themselves wouldn’t be visible from outside the woodland, and even the tallest model stops well below the height of the surrounding trees. Replica moving dinosaurs and other cretaceous beasts will be included along the trail and Cristobal hopes the area will be used in early education and that it’ll become a popular school trip destination; he has even created a raptor which he wears and controls himself to make the whole experience more interactive for youngsters. Each dinosaur takes around three weeks to make from scratch, and Cristobal is currently working 12 hours a day in order to create the sculptures. Theme park designer hopes to create a dinosaur attraction in woodland at Tong Lane site in Bradford Church in Ossett to showcase his creations to the public, his models on display include a Woolly Mammoth, Neanderthal people and a T Rex, and he’s been wowing visitors with his Raptor costume. He said, “One day I woke up and thought, “I’m going to do it, I’m going to open my own dinosaur park”. I went out and told my friends and they all said I was mad. “We’re quite hopeful about getting planning permission. From my understanding it won’t alter the view and won’t be visible from the outside. The area is just overgrown trees at the moment. “What we’re working on at the moment is the wow factor, we’re working on the gimmicks to entertain people, like putting on the costume and chasing the children. They love it. We’re trying to bring some drama to the experience. “I’ve been living in Yorkshire for ten years now and no new attractions have been built. Instead of taking your kids away somewhere this park would be something to do locally. It’s a unique attraction.” Bradford Council are expected to make a decision on the application by October this year.

Cycle for fun, fitness and for life is the message from Wakefield Council as it hosts the next free cycling events at Hemsworth Water Park, Frickley Country Park and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Council, in partnership with British Cycling, is offering a programme of 25 led rides in the district. The next rides are on Sunday August 25 at three different locations across the district. Leeds shop investigated under trading standards DANGEROUS: Products on sale at the Harehills shop contained dangerous amounts of lead

Cosmetic products containing up to 70 per cent lead - a prohibited ingredient for use in cosmetics - have been removed from sale in a shop in the Harehills area of Leeds. Following a lead poisoning incident, Leeds Environmental Health services identified the trader and that the suspected cause of the lead poisoning was from a cosmetic product. On 26th June this year officers from West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service visited the business and found fifteen ‘Hashmi Surma Special’ products on sale. These items and five other suspicious products were seized by West Yorkshire Trading Standards and tested, the results showing they contained lead.

Cosmetic Product Safety legislation in Europe prohibits certain ingredients in cosmetics and also sets out obligations for

manufacturers, importers and retailers in the UK in relation to the correct testing and labelling of products to ensure their safety before placing on the market. Cosmetic products should have a list of ingredients, name and address of the manufacturer or supplier, country of origin, a date of minimum durability or period to be used after opening, warning statements and precautionary information, batch and product

function information where appropriate. On this occasion the trader had been bringing cosmetic goods back after trips abroad visiting family members and was unaware of any obligations and that the products were potentially unsafe. The business immediately took the items off the shelves and had them destroyed. The business has received detailed advice from Trading Standards Councillor Val Slater, Chair of the Trading Standards Committee, said: “Whilst some Surma products do not contain lead, many do. Consumers should only buy, and retailers only sell, cosmetics that are correctly labelled, including an ingredients list. “None of the problem products were correctly labelled. If anyone has any concerns over the safety of cosmetics they should contact the Citizens’ Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040 506.”

Youth group work to better local community GARDENING: The group helped by tidying up the communal gardens

Youth group Kumon Y’all have been working together to improve garden facilities in a local retirement scheme. Members of the group now visit the Walker Street retirement home scheme in Thornhill Lees regularly, and have been helping with gardening work, offering massages and beauty therapy treatments and joining in with exercise classes and activities on the complex. Retirement scheme coordinator Jeanette West has nothing but praise for the work the group do for their elderly community. She said: “The young people are an absolute godsend. They worked so hard in the gardens, doing all the weeding, clearing away any rubbish and some planting. “They seemed to really enjoy it and the residents loved having the young people here.”

On their website, Kumon Y’all explain that their group consistently work to find problem areas within their local community, it says, “We say we can and we will do something about it. If we join together we can tackle the problems and overcome them. “If we want a crime free, well educated, healthy and socially cohesive society then we will have to work hard to achieve it.” The youth team also work to tackle issues such as drugs, crime and anti-social behaviour as well as general health, education and housing. Farook Yunus, group leader from Kumon Y’all, said: “Around 20 of us went down to do some gardening and had a really great time. “There was so much laughter and the atmosphere between the young people and the residents was electric. “We’ve become almost like family, and it’s lovely that something so little can bring a smile to people’s faces.”

In less than one week, a fundraiser from Bradford will embark upon a huge challenge as he attempts to scale Ben Nevis to raise money for victims of the on-going Syrian conflict. On Saturday 31st August, Nazim Ali will begin his ascent of Britain's Highest Mountain, standing at 1,344m, for the Bradford-based Humanitarian international charity Human Relief Foundation (HRF). After paying a visit to Syria in 2006, as a tourist on holiday before the conflicts began, Nazim states he was taken aback by the wonderful hospitality he received from the Syrian people. Yet now, with the country in disrepute, Nazim hopes to help out the once prospering country by

providing families with essentials such as blankets, heaters, food parcels and toys for children. The conflicts in Syria have now lasted over two years with the most recent alleged ‘chemical attacks’ a new sign that the disruption does not look like ending soon. Thousands of lives have already been lost in the violence and the death toll is rising daily. Over 100,000 Syrians have been killed; more than 10 million need humanitarian aid; whilst 75 per cent of the country has very limited access to clean water. 32-year-old Nazim hopes he can provide some contribution to the relief efforts in the country, explaining how ‘every little really does help’. “The minimum I hope to raise from this one appeal is £400 but I am hoping to raise a lot more,” he said. “There is the personal challenge

To date to support his efforts. he has helped raise almost £6,000 for 100 per cent of donations made humanitarian causes and hopes the will go towards alleviating the

Further cuts to council funding in new spending round New information suggests higher local funding cuts than originally expected New information suggests that local government is to be hit by higher funding cuts than previously expected. Information released by the government on the new spending round shows that local government is to be hit harder than initially thought following the Chancellor’s Statement in June. The cuts for 2014-15 and 2015-16 are much deeper than the ten per cent previously announced as the government intends to deduct money from the local government settlement baseline to meet new burdens in social care and for

proposals to fund collaborative work between council’s and other parts of the public service. This will mean a £1.1bn national cut in local government funding with the amount being in the region of 15 per cent rather than the 10 per cent announced. The effect locally will see Kirklees Council needing to find an extra £7m in 2015/16 and a further £13m if this pattern is replicated in 2016/17. Leader of Kirklees Council, Cllr Mehboob Khan, said: “The new information we have now suggests that the cuts in basic funding for

local councils will be much higher than previously indicated and that between 2015/16 and 2016/17 Kirklees will have to make savings of £20m which will severely damage our financial planning ability. “We would ask the Department for Communities and Local Government to reconsider this move as it will magnify the effect of cuts which are already significant and lead to a greater negative impact on local people who rely on services provided by the council. “Making cuts of this magnitude will have a detrimental effect on local people and we would ask that

the government is much clearer on how much is being cut in real terms so that people will understand the actions that we need to take at local level to meet the challenge set. Money allocated to meet new burdens should not be sold to the population as a funding increase for local government when the way it is being funded is in fact a cut to other services.” Cllr Keith Wakefield, Leader Leeds City Council, said: “It is no exaggeration to say that the latest revelations about local authority funding will signal the end of many public services. According to research published by Oxford Brookes University and Data for Education, more than 100,000 secondary school pupils will be taught maths and science by teachers untrained in their subjects. This is due to a chronic shortage of new recruits into the profession as up to 30 per cent of maths places on Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses remain unfilled, potentially leaving schools short of 700 maths teachers next year. The situation is mirrored in other key subjects. • The exams regulator, Ofqual, has announced that speaking and listening assessments will no longer count towards GCSE English grades. The reason cited is that last year's chaos over the qualification showed it was impossible to guarantee fair and consistent marking. Tens of thousands of students received lower grades than expected in English GCSE last year after Ofqual raised grade boundaries between exams in January and June, on the basis that too many teachers were over-marking work to ensure pupils achieved crucial C grades. The decision to remove speaking and listening from the grading of GCSEs in English and English language next summer, for which students have already been studying for a year, was condemned by teaching unions, which said that more than 90% of respondents to a consultation on the subject had rejected the change. • Apprenticeships are a key part of the government’s strategy for tackling youth unemployment, but new evidence suggests that careers advisers may be failing to promote them to young people. Research by the National Union of Students has found that more than 20 per cent of apprentices said they had never received information from a careers service, while more than 50 per cent of university students said they had not been told about the apprenticeship opportunities available. For those who did look into the option the apprenticeship minimum wage, which at £2.65 per hour is less than half the national minimum wage of £6.91 per hour, was a major deterrent. However despite this, 20 per cent of higher education students said they would consider working as an apprentice in the future, believing it would be a good way of developing work experience. • Employers are being urged to take on more apprentices due to Apprenticeship applications increasing by a third over the year to 1.4 million. Although the number of vacancies have also jumped by 27% in the last 12 months, so that they now stand at close to 129 000, the disconnect means that each one receives an average of around 11 applications. • Graduates are continuing to find work, despite diﬃcult economic times, according to the results of a survey released today. Only 3.2% of graduates, who left higher education in 2008/09, were believed to be unemployed three and a half years later. The most recent unemployment figures showed an unemployment rate of 7.8% overall for the UK and 21.4% for 16-24-year-olds. • The first private medical school in the UK will open its doors to students in January 2015. The Buckingham Milton Keynes Medical School will charge £35,000 per year for a ‘fast-track’ course lasting four-and-a-half years, as opposed to the typical five or six. No government funding will be available to the school, but the university is hoping to attract students who may have been considering attending private medical schools abroad. Competition for medical degrees in the UK is fierce, with UCAS figures for 2012 entry revealing that 10.6 applicants battled for every place last year. As a private institution, the school will be at liberty to enrol uncapped numbers of international students, to whom the cost may come as less of a shock. Speaking of the fees nearly four times the fixed maximum tuition fee for public universities of £9,000 per year- a spokeswoman said they were “within the range of fees being charged by other UK medical schools for overseas students.”

Conor Ibrahiem, a multi-talented charismatic individual, whose skills include acting, directing and playwriting, was the latest Role Model to be involved with the Streetvibe initiative. Born in Bradford, the Yorkshireman is very proud of his roots and has gone on to have acting cameos in Coronation street, Eastenders , Emmerdale, The Bill, Brookside, Bad girls and Cops. He has worked in the industry for fourteen years, accumulating a wealth of experience which he hopes he can now use to change the way some people think. Having already produced a community play about how mental health affects lives, his main aims are to address the negative perceptions and misconceptions of Islam and Muslims. promote the faith for what it is, a peaceful Faith. In line with his vision he has created his own Bradford theatre company, Arakan Creative, to help tackle and educate the views and voices of the South Asian community. During the Role Models series, Conor gave an insight into his life, his ambitions and dreams during his early years and how he wanted to be like Superman. He then talked about gangs and drugs. Initiating the workshop by stating the phrase, “if anyone has an idea that being in a gang is cool or will get you some kind of shot to stardom, fame or earn you money, in the end it will fail.” He referred to a newspaper report where nine men received a combined 167 year imprisonment for being part of a gang. Conor highlighted the usual incentives associated with gangs; nice cars, watches, expensive attire and jewellery, and explained how, if you go down the fast lane or the wrong lane, people end up in the wrong place, in prison. Conor’s career has taken a turn lately stepping away from acting and

turning his attention to producing art. A big influence on him was his mother who was very supportive. His advice to parents is “let your kids do what they want to do, and listen to the children. Allow them to follow their dreams, as long as it’s within the law.” As part of the workshop young people took part in producing and acting in their own three minute plays. The enthusiasm of the young people was evident as they all got stuck in, showcasing their talents to become actors. To conclude Conor left the youth with some thought provoking advice, “never let go of your dreams, as your grow older you will face barriers but don’t let them put you off. A popular eatery was taken to court after a cockroach was found on a pizza Popular Leeds takeaway, Munchies, has been issued a hefty fine for food safety offences after a customer found a cockroach embedded in their pizza crust. After being called to investigate the incident on 22nd August last year, environmental health officers found conditions in the premises so appalling that they immediately closed the Harehills Road eatery. Having pleaded guilty to a number of food safety offences, Leeds magistrates last week fined Munchies owner Matloob Hussein £750 and ordered him to pay £1250 in costs. Two men sentenced for death of man in Bradford hit and run Two men have today been sentenced for their part in the death of a 59-yearold man following a fatal road traffic collision. Richard Taylor died after being struck by a car as he crossed the A650 Keighley Road in Manningham in July 2012. Ishan Khan of Woodlands Street, Bradford (upper left) was sentenced to six years for causing death by dangerous driving and attempting to pervert the course of justice whilst Javed Ali Zaman of St Michael's Road, Bradford (lower left) was sentenced to 12 months for attempting to pervert the course of justice. Zaman was also sentenced on the day for other unrelated criminal

offences including a robbery in James Street Bradford in October 2012. He received a combined sentence of seven years for all the offending taken together. Richard's sister Jane Taylor said: “Richard was a good, kind person who was at a time in his life where he was the happiest he had ever been. He always thought of others and he had expressed a wish to donate his organs after his passing. This will now not be possible and is something else that has been taken from him. “No sentence will ever be enough for what has been done to Richard, however I am satisfied that justice has been done and I would like to thank the witnesses who helped Richard

immediately after the collision and those who came forward to give evidence. I would finally like to thank the police officers who have worked tirelessly on this case to support me and bring those responsible to justice.” Detective Superintendent Lisa Griffin of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: “Richard Taylor was a much loved brother who had his life tragically cut short because of the actions of Ishan Khan on 30th July last year. Not only did he knock Mr Taylor down but he then made it worse by not stopping at the scene to help or contacting the emergency services. He now has six years in prison to consider the consequences of his actions on that day. Khan was also helped by Javed Ali Zaman who failed to help Mr Taylor and supported Khan's dishonest version of events. He too will spend time in prison."

Police have arrested 45 men believed to be involved in the biggest child sex ring ever seen in the UK. The arrests come after a year-long investigation into sex abuse allegations across three towns in West Yorkshire. Most of the suspects – said to be white and Asian – are in their 20s but some of are said to be middle aged, up to their 60s. Members of the gang are alleged to have abused four girls – some as young as 13 – over several years. One member of the gang is said to have groomed the girls before having sex with one of them in front of his friends and passing her around to be abused. Some of the men arrested were directly linked to each other while others were

There has been a series of incidents over several years and we will investigate each and every one of them. “Some of the incidents involved a couple of people, while others involved more.” The investigation involving 30 police officers is ongoing and further arrests may be made over coming weeks. All the alleged crimes are

said to have occurred at least two years ago and the men involved have all been bailed. These recent arrests follow a series of high-profile child sex gang cases - including five men who were jailed for life in June in Oxford. Child sex gangs have also been uncovered in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, Cambridgeshire and Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

A small idea by a few caring people has turned into a growing scheme to help feed Bradford’s hungry. Osman Gondal, founder of Intouch Foundation, was walking in the city one evening last December and felt there was a real need to help feed vulnerable people. He went home, cooked a pot of food, came back and dished it out from the boot of his car. That one incident sparked a whole foundation being formed, and a husband and wife team has turned into a huge group effort in the past eight months which now enlists the help of another 100 volunteers. Now, every Monday, the team take their mobile soup kitchen, using a donated van, to feed those in need a hot meal. Volunteer Manager, Adnan Awan, said: “We’re not just there to serve homeless people, we have a very simple criteria and serve three types of people: homeless people, people living below the poverty line and anyone else who wants to join the queue.” Awan explains that they are teaming up with local businesses to maximise their impact, such as Lister’s Ladies Gym, who sponsor the initiative, and also open up their facilities to volunteers to thank them for their hard work. Awan says that there is more in the pipeline for the foundation: “We’re currently in talks with Bradford City to try and organise a project with them, they’re very keen on working with the community, especially the Asian community, and with people from

The Upper Calder Valley is going to see the benefits of a £3 milion programme to ease the impact of flooding in the area this coming Autumn. After last year’s devastating floods in Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, Calderdale Council and the Environment Agency (EA) have begun to draw up plans to improve defences at more than 20 locations across the area. One of the first areas to be targeted as part of the two year minor works programme will be Mytholmroyd where vegetation in the river channel will be cleared. Other locations where designs are being developed include Walsden, which was badly hit by flash flooding at the end of last month, Dobroyd Clough at Todmorden and Erringden Hillside at Hebden Bridge. Flooding hotspots on the main A646 road through the Upper Calder Valley will also be targeted. The Environment Agency has completed inspections along Walsden Water to assess damage caused by the flash flood on 29 July when 17 millimetres of intense rain fell in just 15 minutes. The EA is also looking at what else will need to be done to strengthen defences in the area. The Council has commissioned a study to investigate solutions to the flooding that took place at Kershaw Road and Clough Road in Walsden. Kershaw Road was destroyed in

last month’s flood and Council teams spent two weeks helping residents and businesses with the clean up. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, Cllr Barry Collins said: “Although Clough Road isn’t an adopted highway, we have cleared away uplifted tarmac and brought in stone to give temporary access from the railway along Clough Road to Kershaw Road. “The study to investigate solutions will determine the extent of future works required. A recommendation will be put to the Council’s Cabinet as soon as the facts are established. “It’s really important that residents and businesses know what to do to prepare for future flooding and what to do after a flood. The Council and the Environment Agency have useful information, advice and guidance on their websites.” Oliver Harmar, the Environment Agency’s Flood Risk Manager for South and West Yorkshire, added: “The EA and Calderdale Council are working together with local flood groups and other organisations to develop affordable and technically feasible solutions to deal with flooding from all sources. We are drawing up detailed designs for a variety of flood alleviation measures across the Calder Valley. “Local knowledge and the feedback we have received from the Calder Valley communities worst affected by flooding means we can target specific locations where the money spent will have the greatest benefit.”

Motorists in West Yorkshire could be subjected to spot fines for tail-gating and middle lane hogging as part of a new crackdown on bad driving. The changes give road policing units new powers to issue £100 penalty notices and drivers could also receive three points on their license. More serious offences could end up in court and offenders would be subjected to higher penalties. Fines for existing

offences, such as driving whilst using a mobile phone, will also rise. The changes allow road policing officers more flexibility when dealing with more minor driving offences, and it has been said that it will be a less time consuming process than going through court for offences. Drivers will still have the option to appeal decisions in court and also to take a road safety course as an alternative to license points. The changes have been met with some scepticism, and a recent poll by Auto Trader showed that 60 per cent of road users believe

that the changes will have no impact on road safety. Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond said: “Careless driving puts innocent people’s lives at risk. That is why we have made it easier for the police to tackle problem drivers by allowing them to immediately issue a fixedpenalty notice for low-level offending rather than taking these offenders to court.” Chief Inspector Mark Bownass of West Yorkshire Police, said there would be no change to how roads in the county were policed as a result. But he added: “The new fixed penalties provide officers with a toolkit which allows them to deal with the offence based upon their perception, right through from a fixed penalty ticket to a traffic offence report.”

In the wake of a series of food scares and examples of contamination of supposedly halal food products by -materials such as horse meat and pig DNA, a British food professional has launched his own investigation into the value of halal food manufacturers’ claims. Faruk Vali is managing director of a Lancashire based halal food business and, having developed an insider’s view of the industry, he made the decision to launch his own blog. The site is intended to help ordinary Muslim consumers to make more informed choices about the foods that they eat by providing details about what ‘halal’ and ‘halal certified’ stamps really mean. Vali states: “I started the blog because it seemed to me that there is a great deal of uncertainty amongst consumers about halal labelling. There is a lack of clarity in the halal industry and so much of customer choice has to come down to a matter of trust. “I started by looking at the question of halal certification. In practice, there is very little to stop an unscrupulous manufacturer from sticking a ‘halal’ stamp on almost any item of food packaging, regardless of whether its ingredients have been checked and processed in accordance with halal requirements or not. “There are several different certification bodies operating in the UK and it’s clear that they operate according to very different principles. Some will accept stunning; others will not. Some appear to accept mechanical slaughter; others do not. Some check via a system of periodic ‘spot checks’ whilst others will only award certification if the company has a full time, independent inspector

stationed on the factory floor. “In short, there is still a great deal of difference between the various systems and when the consumer sees a ‘halal certified’ label on a product, it can still be very difficult to know exactly what that means. “The other big problem is that some of the certification agencies seem to be quite cagey about the criteria and the methods they use. “I work for a halal certified company, so I know what its particular monitoring agency looks for, but trying to obtain detailed information from some of the other bodies was almost impossible. If it’s difficult for me – as someone who works within the industry – to find out what a given halal-certified stamp means, then what hope does the ordinary consumer have? “The goal of the new blog is to produce an honest and accurate comparison between the different certification agencies – what they check for; how they operate and so on. I have been as accurate as I possibly could but it’s a difficult field in which to gather hard facts so I’m hoping that the agencies themselves will check the blog and write in with any corrections or updates. The blog is intended to help people make better choices about the foods they eat, so I’d ask the certification bodies to use it as an opportunity to give consumers clearer information about their work.” The early results of Faruk’s ongoing research can be found at www.choosinghalal.org.

Leeds-Bradford cycle “super highway” go ahead A 14-mile cycle path connecting the two cities is to be built following an £18m investment

A 14-mile “cycle super highway” connecting Bradford and Leeds has been given the go-ahead following a £29 million investment. Up to £18m will come from the Department for Transport for the route, with £11m of local funding coming from the two councils and Metro. Work is set to begin later this year. Metro will pay around £7.5m while Bradford Council will pay 25 per cent of the remainder and Leeds Council 75 per cent, due to the fact that a larger portion of the cycle superhighway will fall under Leeds Council’s remit. The cash award from the Department of Transport is part of a £94m government fund to promote cycling in cities and national parks across the UK. James Lewis, Metro chairman, hopes the superhighway will “transform” cycling between the two cities. He said the path will “link local residents to employment sites, areas of housing growth and key economic regeneration sites.” Adding: “It will encourage more people to use their bikes for commuting to and from work and help reduce the dependency on private cars.” The Tour De France’s Grand Depart starts from Yorkshire in July next year,

Women and girls at risk of forced marriage have been advised by a charity to put a metal spoon in their underwear to set off airport metal detectors. Karma Nirvana, a charity that supports victims of forced marriage, has said this tactic has helped women buy time so that can explain their situation when they are searched. They claim it has helped people in the past to avoid being taken overseas. Last week, UK government ministers warned that young people were at highest risk of being taken abroad and forced to marry during the school Summer holidays. Their forced marriage unit received report of 400 cases between June and August last year, out of a yearly total of 1,500. Estimated figures of Britons forced into marriage each year lie between 1,500 and 5,000, with a third under the age of 16. Speaking to AFP, Natasha Rattu, Karma Nirvana's operations manager said they regularly advise helpline callers to protect themselves with this new trick. She said: “If they don’t know exactly when it may happen

And when they go they are often gone for a long time and don’t come back until they are pregnant. “Nobody knows what the true figure is because so many young victims are terrified of coming forward. But it is definitely much, much higher than what is reported.” Justice Minister Damian Green, said: “To protect men and women from being forced in to marriage we are making it a criminal offence to breach a Forced Marriage Protection Order (FMPO) punishable by up to five years in prison.” Jasvinder Sanghera CBE, activist and advocate for women’s right and founder of the charity Karma Nirvana, has campaigned for 15

years to make forced marriage a criminal act after she was forced in to a marriage. Her sister was also forced in to a violent marriage and killed herself. She said: “Forced marriages rob you of a childhood - our victims have the most horrific of crimes committed against them here in Britain. As cases increase so must awareness, legal remedies and a strong message to perpetrators. “Strengthening Forced Marriage Protection Orders reinforces the serious approach we are taking to tackle these abuses. All these measures remind victims that forced marriages are a crime not part of culture, tradition and that they will be believed and supported if they report.”

t is common for commercial contracts to contain exclusion clauses which limit or restrict the parties’ liability in the event of a breach of contract. Where such clauses are particularly restrictive, the Courts may interpret them narrowly and find that the clauses are not valid, particularly where the operation of the clause would leave the wronged party without any effective remedy. In the case of Kudos Catering (UK) Limited –v- Manchester Central Convention Complex Limited [2013], MCCC was the owner of a large conference and exhibition centre in Manchester and engaged Kudos to provide catering services at the venue for a period of 5 years. However, 3 years later, MCCC terminated the contract. Kudos argued that this constituted a repudiatory breach of the contract and issued Court proceedings for damages, including a claim in the sum of £1.3 million for the loss of profit it would have earned for the remaining two years of the contract. However, the contract contained a clause that MCCC would have “no liability whatsoever...for any loss of goodwill, business, revenue or profits, anticipated savings or wasted expenditure (whether reasonably foreseeable or not) or indirect or consequential loss”. In the High Court, the Judge held that all liability had been excluded by the above clause. The Court took the view that on a literal interpretation the clause had only one possible meaning; to exclude all liability for loss of profit. Kudos had a remedy available to them and that was a claim for Specific Performance of the contract, rather than termination for a breach of that contract. Kudos successfully appealed to the Court of Appeal. The Court were critical of the previous decision in that it failed

to consider the wider context for the exclusion clause or the commercial intentions of the parties. The Court favoured a narrower interpretation of the clause, in which liability was only excluded in the case of defective performance of the contract and not where there was a refusal to perform the contract at all. If the exclusion clause were to be interpreted literally it would have left Kudos with no available sanction against MCCC where there was a breach of contract, meaning the agreement would be “devoid of contractual content”. That interpretation would therefore be contrary to common business sense. Further, the Court of Appeal disagreed that other remedies were available to Kudos (such as an injunction restraining MCCC from excluding Kudos from the venue) as it would not be possible for the contract to be performed in the absence of full co-operation from MCCC. The practical effect of such an interpretation would be that there would be no sanction for nonperformance by MCCC. The Court took the view that it was inherently unlikely that the parties intended the clause to have this effect. This case demonstrates the importance of having well drafted contracts which correctly set out the intentions of the parties. One of the issues in this case was that the relevant clause had been ‘buried’ within a clause entitled “Indemnity and Insurance”. Had the parties intended to exclude liability for loss of profit in the event of a refusal to perform the contract, such a provision should have been set out unambiguously in a stand-alone clause. Indian rupee hits record low The Indian rupee hit a record low and shares slumped on Tuesday after parliament's approval of a $20 billion (12.9 billion pounds) plan to provide cheap grain to the poor renewed doubts about the government's resolve to control spending ahead of elections due next year. The alarm over India's fiscal deficit eclipsed an announcement by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram that the government had approved infrastructure projects worth 1.83 trillion rupees ($28.38 billion), a step aimed at reviving economic growth and shoring up investor confidence. Consumers transferring money should be careful to enter correct details on the smaller keypads says the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). They might also be using mobile banking late at night, which could affect their concentration when moving funds. The FCA is studying

the potential risks to customers of mobile banking. The review is looking into a sector that involves all sorts of payments to individuals and firms using mobile phones, tablet computers or other handheld devices. Mobile banking also involves apps that allow customers to check their account balance, view statements, and check the latest activity on their account. 'Exciting development' The FCA will publish a full report into mobile

banking in early 2014. However, its early findings are aimed at giving guidance to providers, and explaining the potential risks to consumers. Facebook to pay $20m over ‘Likes’ advertising A judge has approved a deal in which Facebook will pay $20m (£13m) for using members "likes" as endorsements for advertisers. The money is to be shared between lawyers, internet privacy rights groups and Facebook users who filed claims in the class-action lawsuit against the social media giant. US district judge Richard Seeborg reasoned that the sum, a small fraction of the billions being sought in the case, was fair given the challenges of proving Facebook members were financially harmed or that signalling "likes" for products did not imply some form of consent. Facebook's Sponsored Stories programme used members' names or likenesses to endorse ads without getting their permission, according to the legal filing. Judge Seeborg estimated the size of the class represented in the suit as 150 million people, but noted that so few had filed claims that there was ample money in the settlement fund. “The settlement as a whole provides fair, reasonable, and adequate relief to the class, in light of all the circumstances, including the low probability that a substantially better result would be obtained

through continued litigation,” the judge ruled. The settlement calls for Facebook to modify its rules to give members greater control when it comes to how their information is used regarding Sponsored Stories. “Sponsored Stories, in Facebook's view, does nothing more than take information users have already voluntarily disclosed to their ‘friends’, and sometimes redisplays it to the same persons, in a column that also contains more traditional paid advertising,” the judge wrote while detailing his decision. “Plaintiffs faced a substantial burden in showing they were injured by the Sponsored Stories.” So few Facebook members have filed claims that those negotiating the settlement proposed paying out $15 to each person and having enough cash left over for lawyer fees and routing funds to internet privacy groups, according to the ruling. An original settlement rejected by the judge recommended the same pool of money, but allocated none of it to Facebook members. The lawsuit was filed in early 2011 after Facebook launched its Sponsored Stories advertising programme.

Three out of ten patients on the UK’s kidney transplant waiting list are from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, according to a new NHS report. The latest Organ Donation and Transplantation Activity Report published by NHS Blood and Transplant also reveals that only 23 per cent of patients who received a kidney transplant during 2012/13 were from these communities and, on average, they will wait a year longer for a transplant than a White patient. Kidneys are allocated according to many factors, with blood and tissue type amongst the most important and matching is likely to be closer when the ethnicity of the donor and recipient are closer. As only a small percentage, around five per cent, of deceased donors are from BAME communities, this can delay a suitably matched organ being found for BAME patients. Last year there were 1,212 deceased donors in the UK. Only 56 of them were from BAME communities. Of those, 21 were Asian, 20 were Black and 15 were from other ethnic backgrounds. A Sikh TV channel has been handed a £30,000 fine after a controversial debate was held on air whereby guests supported an assassination attempt on a former Indian Army General. Sangat TV were issued the fine after commentators on the channel had stated their approval of an incident which saw Lt Gen Kuldeep Singh Brar have his throat cut by unknown assailants. Ofcom said the programme was ‘likely to encourage or to incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder’. 78-year-old Lt Gen Brar was in charge of the controversial military operation to clear Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, northwest India, in 1984. According to Indian Government official figures, 400 people were killed in the attacks, however Sikhs around the world have claimed that the actual number is much higher, with 1,000s of pilgrims killed. Ofcom said satellite channel Sangat TV broadcast statements in a panel discussion programme, on 30th September last year, which 'were an indirect call to members of the Sikh community to take violent action against Lt General Brar and other

members of the Indian armed forces'. Following a viewer complaint, Ofcom requested a translation of the debate, whereby it was revealed that commentators on the show said: “If they [who assaulted Brar] were Sikhs, I congratulate them...Whatever nation [Brar's attackers] belong to, they will be our diamonds.”

The channel's head of programmes, Amarpreet Mann, said: “Ofcom haven’t shown any kind of flexibility. They have failed to understand the feelings of the Sikhs. We will be contesting the fine.” Adding that anything more than a token fine would be "crippling" because it is a charity-based station, Mr Mann said: “We’ve not done anything wrong and it’s independent media. The parents of a Muslim child at the centre of a row about a dinner lady who was sacked for serving pork to their seven-year-old, have filed a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) on unfair reporting by the ‘Sun’. Zahid and Rumana Darr claim the reporter who 'broke' the story misrepresented their remarks to him. They say that they never gave the name of their child and that the article seems to suggest that the dinner lady was sacked on the basis of just this one incident. Dinner lady of 11-years, Alison Waldock, has maintained that said she “accidentally” gave Khadija Darr gammon at lunchtime at Queen Edith Primary School in Godwin Way after the youngster pointed to the dish on the lunch menu. A nearby teacher spotted the mistake and quickly swept the plate away from the child. The Darrs say they never made a specific complaint about the dinner

lady, nor did they ask for Waldock to be sacked. They just wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again. In fact it was the headteacher who had invited a number of other parents including the Darrs via email for a meeting about their halal/vegetarian meal concerns. Now it has been revealed that there had been repeated accusations against the dinner lady, both by Muslim and vegetarian parents. The Darrs want it clarified that neither they nor their daughter should be blamed for the subsequent sacking. The school’s headteacher Caroline Peet confirmed the incident was “not a one-off” and that Waldock’s actions had been treated seriously by employer Lunchtime UK, due to the significant number of children involved in the complaints process. Lunchtime UK operations director Peter McAleese said to the press: “Anyone losing their job is regretful. “But there was a full and transparent procedure that Alison went through - as well as an appeals procedure which she lost.”

Now the Darrs, who have four children at Queen Edith Primary want the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) to investigate the Sun's coverage of the story and their daughter. Mosque set ablaze in anti-Muslim demonstration

Police are investigating CCTV footage of a suspected arson attack on a Mosque last week, as they attempt to identify the culprits behind the action. The Harlow Islamic Centre, Essex, was targeted in an anti-Muslim attack with members of the Mosque explaining how there was a ‘concerted effort’ to start the blaze, as entrances were sealed with foam so the fire would take hold. No-one was hurt in the attack but there was some damage to doors and walls. The mosque was set up 18 years ago when the Muslim community grew in the Harlow region and now serves a 2,000strong community, according to the centre's website. Zia Rehman, vice-chairman of the Harlow Islamic Centre, said members of the mosque found the damage when they came in to pray at 4am. Mosque chairman Ajaib Hussain told Sky News that fires were set at five doors, including the main one at the front of the building. He said: “It looks like industrial foam was used to start the fire. And it did catch fire but thankfully it didn't get any further. “Behind it is a boiler and if that had caught fire then the whole thing would have blown up so we were very lucky it

didn't get any further.” Officers believe the attack took place between 10.30pm and 4am, and officers joined Mr Hussain to condemn the attack. Chief Inspector Ed Wells added: “We stand here together, appalled at the criminal behaviour of the individuals who last night tried to set fire to this building. “They appear to have set fire to foam at one of the centre's doors which has damaged the wall, but thankfully not taken hold of the building. “We have an excellent relationship with the leaders here. There will be a police presence throughout today and tonight and we will of course work tirelessly to identify those responsible. “I want to thank Mr Hussain and the rest of his team who remain very dignified and calm despite this very concerning attack." Mr Rehman said: “We have been working very hard within the local community, building bridges. “And we were hoping we wouldn't have this kind of problem, but in the current climate there are elements within society that are not happy and there are issues. “It's unfortunate and we are very saddened.”

Thousands at Leicester Mela heard blood donation message last weekend

As thousands of people gathered in Leicester for the annual Mela over the bank holiday weekend, they were prompted to think about registering as a blood donor to help the hundreds of people in their communities who need blood transfusions every day. Less than three per cent of people from south Asian backgrounds give blood, yet blood disorders such as ‘thalassemia major’, which can lead to anaemia, are prevalent within this community. Regular blood transfusions are needed for those affected in order to stay alive. In Leicestershire, there are currently only 1,690 people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds who give blood regularly. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), the organisation who runs the blood service in England and North Wales, hosted their own stall at the Mela, along with many other charities and organisations, in an attempt to recruit more people from ethnic minority backgrounds to become blood donors and potentially help save lives. A single blood donation can be broken down into different component parts. Red cells can be used to help treat people with anaemia or thalassemia whilst platelets are often given to cancer patients having chemotherapy. Theo Clarke, Lead Donor Relations Manager for BAME and special projects with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) explain the importance of donations coming in from a wide demographic of people. He said: “It’s vitally important that people from the Asian community come forward to give blood. There are

Islamic schools are the fastest growing school sector in Australia, with some expanding so quickly that applications are extremely limited, and some only allowing siblings of existing pupils places. The number of Muslim schools in the Australian state New South Wales has tripled over the past 15 years. While the number of pupils in state school has dropped slightly in the past decade, the number of pupils in Islamic school has rocketed to around 10,000. Al-Faisal College at Auburn has nearly doubled in size over the past five years to 1,600 pupils. It recently bought a fourhectare property in Australia near Sydney where it plans to build a huge campus for a further 600 students. It may soon be the biggest independent school in the state. Deputy principal Peter Rompies said the school has ”huge waiting lists” of between 200 and 300 students and will most likely have to reject at least half of next year’s kindergarten applications. The state’s largest Islamic school is Malek Fahd Islamic School, which has almost 2,500 students across three campuses and has stopped adding names to its waiting list. Peter Jones has spent seven years researching Australia’s Islamic schools for his PhD, and said only 15 to 20 per cent of Muslim students attended Islamic schools.” He said: “The demand is there, they just don’t have the room.” The executive director of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, Geoff Newcombe, said there was no doubt the schools would continue to grow.

An Australian MP has mistaken Islam for a country in a TV interview, she has been widely mocked and has since apologised and quit the election race. Stephanie Banister of the One Nation Party was fighting for a parliamentary seat in Queensland, she had only been in politics for 48 hours. The interview has gone viral and been spread widely across social media on the internet. During the video Banister also confused the term “haram” (forbidden) with Quran, and suggested Jews worship Jesus Christ. She said during her TV appearance, “I don’t oppose Islam as a country, but I do feel that their laws should not be welcome here in Australia.”

Banister now claims the interview was edited in a way to make her look “quite the fool”, and she has apologised to her political party and to friends and family for any embarrassment caused. One Nation Party leader, Jim Savage, has said in a statement that Banister still has full support from the group, and expressed concern that she has been under enormous pressure since the incident, including receiving threats aimed at herself and her family. Banister has since said, although she feels she was ready to stand for election, that she was possibly too “inexperienced” and “still learning about the political side of life”. She stood down from the election race and will no longer stand for vote on September 7th.

Texas shopping centre signs ban Muslims from parking

Mysterious signs banning Muslims from using a Texan shopping centre’s car park appeared this week sparking huge outrage. The posters read ‘No Muslim parking in the Westview Shopping Center’ and were spotted in the car park last week, which is across the street from a mosque. It has been reported that the signs were installed to deter large crowds which were expected at the mosque during the holy month of Ramadan. A handful of employees have been said to privately express frustration at members of the mosque occupying

spots allocated for customers in the past. Worshippers in the area were infuriated by the signs, which also warned offenders that their cars would be towed if they did not comply. "I feel sorry for the person who wrote it," said Ahmed Hassan. "This is what comes to mind because obviously he has a lot of hate." “I’m very shocked because we live in a society that’s supposed to be very accepting and this is what we all preach”, he added. The posters have since been removed from the car park and police are looking into the matter.

Iraq car bombs kill at least 14 across Baghdad

Five car bombs killed at least 14 people and wounded more than 80 in Baghdad, Iraqi police sources said. One attack was very close to the “green zone” diplomatic complex. One bomb exploded 200-300 metres outside Baghdad's international zone, close to Iraq's foreign ministry, killing four and wounding 12 others, sources have said. The central zone is a highly fortified area of the capital housing western embassies including the US mission. The nearby foreign ministry has been a frequent target of previous attacks. Iraq is experiencing

some of its worst violence since US troops left a year and a half ago, with Sunni Islamist militants including al-Qaida waging an insurgency against the Shia-led government. Multiple car bombs explode every week, killing dozens of people, and the government has launched a security mission to try to round up suspected militants. Last week’s attacks targeted districts in central, eastern, northern and southern Baghdad, including Shia areas, police said. One bomb, on a trailer carrying gas cylinders in al-Shurta alRabaa district, killed four and wounded 18.

For years, Asian people have been using skin lightening creams and avoiding showing their true colour, but a new campaign hopes to change that. Skin lightening treatments are big business across the entire continent, and the market for them in India alone is worth around £432 million according to a report by ACNelson, even overtaking brand giant Coca Cola in sales. Indian actress Nandita Das is the face of new campaign “Dark is Beautiful” which she hopes will help people be more comfortable in their own skin. She recently put out a statement on her own website about how often she is referred to as “dark” or “earthy” in the press, as well as editors lightening her skin. Das also claims that it is much easier for actors and actresses to secure acting work if they have fairer skin.

I have done nothing to be born as a woman, a Hindu, an Indian or dark. “I have directors come to me and say ‘you will be playing an educated character from a higher class, would you mind lightening your skin?’ and I say ‘are you telling me that only lower class and uneducated women are dark?’ it’s such stereotyping and we keep perpetuating that. “It’s bizarre, the obsession we have in our country with fair skin. It’s really sad actually.” Treatment cream campaigns are regularly fronted with movie and

sports stars, and they are a regular feature of magazine pages, television screens and billboards across the country. There are lightening creams not just for facial and bodily use but also more specific areas such as under-arms and genitalia too. Anu Hasan, an actress and TV anchor, is also backing the Dark Is Beautiful campaign, and also believes that current attitudes are “ridiculous”. Death toll rises in Egypt 25 police killed in fatal ambush

A devastating attack by Islamic militants left 25 police officers dead after the two mini-buses they were travelling in were seized last week. The daylight attack came just one day after 36 detainees were killed as they were transported to a prison outside Cairo, and is believed to be carried out by militants from the Sinai Peninsula. The attack on the police convoy, close to the town of Rafah on the Gaza border, was one of the deadliest on security forces in several years. Interim President Adly Mansour immediately declared three days of national mourning for the attacks, whilst a state of emergency is underway following a recent rise in killings across the country. More than 830 people, including 102 police officers and soldiers, are reported to have been killed since Wednesday 14th August, when the army cleared protest camps set up by Morsi supporters, many of whom were members of the ousted President’s party, the Muslim Brotherhood movement. In Monday's latest attack, the militants forced the two vehicles to stop, ordered the onboard policemen out before shooting them as they lay on the ground. The policemen were in civilian

clothes, officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which also left two other policemen wounded. General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the country's military chief and interim President, said on Sunday that the crackdown, followed by a state of emergency and a night-time curfew imposed in Cairo and several other flashpoint provinces, is needed to protect the country from civil war. He has vowed that the military will stand firm in the face of rising violence, but also called for the inclusion of Islamists in the postMorsi political process. Sinai, a strategic region bordering the Gaza Strip and Israel, has witnessed almost daily attacks since Morsi’s ousting, leading many to link the militants there to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which Morsi hails. Meanwhile, Egyptian prosecutors have ordered the ousted President Mohammed Morsi be detained for a further 15 days while they investigate fresh allegations against him. Spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, General Guide Mohammed Badie, has also been arrested in Cairo by Egyptian officials after being detained last week.

Saudi Arabia made oil offer to Russia during Putin meeting More details of a meeting at the end of July between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan have emerged, with the Saudi prince reportedly having suggested the two sides come up with a unified Russian-Saudi strategy on global oil supply and price. The Kremlin has admitted the meeting took place, although neither side has revealed details of what was discussed. But in recent weeks elements of the conversation have been leaked to the Russian press. Now, further details, including the Saudi suggestion on oil, have been published by Lebanese daily newspaper As-Safir. According to As-Safir, Prince Bandar was reported to have offered cooperation in the oil and gas sector in return for Russia backing down over its support for the existing Syrian regime. "Let us examine how to put together a unified Russian-Saudi strategy on the subject of oil. The aim is to agree on the price of oil and production quantities that keep the price stable in global oil markets," Prince Bandar was

reported to have said. "We understand Russia's great interest in the oil and gas present in the Mediterranean Sea from Israel to Cyprus through Lebanon and Syria. And we understand the importance of the Russian gas pipeline to Europe. We are not interested in competing with that," he was reported as saying by AsSafir. He also offered Saudi investment in Russia. "The kingdom can provide large multi-billion-dollar investments in various fields in the Russian market. What's important is to conclude political understandings on a number of issues, particularly Syria and Iran." Putin, in response, was reported to have said that these topics should be discussed by the relevant ministries in both countries. On Syria, however, Putin said that Moscow's position would not change. "We believe that the Syrian regime is the best speaker on behalf of the Syrian people," he was reported as saying. Saudi Arabia has been strongly supportive of the rebels battling the regime of President Bashar al-

Assad. But Russia, to the fury of Riyadh and its Western allies, has refused to cut its cooperation with the Damascus regime. Prince Bandar also reportedly said he hoped that the Russians would understand that Russia's interests and the interests of the Gulf states are one in the face of the nuclear challenge from Iran. But Putin said Russia still backs Tehran's right to have nuclear power. "We support the Iranian quest to obtain nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes. And we helped them develop their facilities in this direction. Of course, we will resume negotiations with them as part of the P5+1 group," Putin was reported as saying. "I will meet with President Hassan Rowhani on the sidelines of the Central Asia summit and we will discuss a lot of bilateral, regional and international issues. "We will inform him that Russia is completely opposed to the UN Security Council imposing new sanctions on Iran. We believe that the sanctions imposed against Iran and Iranians are unfair and that we will not repeat the experience again," he was quoted as saying.

New UK support for Pakistan people affected by 2012 floods Seeds, shelter and training from the UK will help more than 700,000 people in Pakistan recover from last year’s widespread floods, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced. Over a million people in southern Pakistan are still living without adequate shelter, exposed to the elements and vulnerable to disease. The new UK support is providing 50,000 of these families with cash grants to buy building materials and training on how to build

houses which will resist future floods, such as waterproofing walls with lime plaster. Seeds, chickens, and training in farming skills are also being provided to over 690,000 people to improve the availability of food and fodder, and enable families to earn some money. In addition, the UK is closely monitoring this year’s monsoon in Pakistan and has already put in place emergency items near disaster prone areas, so that help can be mobilised quickly if needed. This includes emergency

shelter, solar lamps, and sleeping mats for 15,000 families. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “We have emergency supplies already in place for a fast response to this year’s monsoon. “In addition to providing crop seeds and training in farm skills to get people back on their feet, the UK is helping them build homes that will stand up to future flooding, breaking the vicious cycle of the annual rains.”

Farinba Ahmandi Kakar has been kidnapped by insurgents in a restive province south of Kabul, she is the first lawmaker to be abducted since the Taliban’s fall from power. 25,000 Liberia students all fail university admission exam Nearly 25,000 school-leavers failed the test for admission to the University of Liberia, one of two state-run universities. The students lacked enthusiasm and did not have a basic grasp of English, a university official told the press. A bloody civil war that ended a decade ago has left the education system in tatters, with many schools deprived of the simplest education resources and in dire need of qualified teachers. But a lack of enthusiasm and a basic grasp of English are behind the latest shocking statistic, a university spokesperson has said. Defending the university’s decision, spokesman Momodu Getaweh confirmed that it would not be changing its stance, arguing that the government must put the war behind them and act fast on students’ complete ignorance of the “mechanics” of English. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace laureate, recently acknowledged that the education system was still "in a mess", and much needed to be done to improve it. However, this is the first time that every single student who wrote the exam for a fee of $25 (£16) has failed, which means that the overcrowded university

will not have any new first-year students when it reopens next month for the academic year. Education Minister Etmonia DavidTarpeh told the BBC Focus on Africa programme that she intended to meet university officials to discuss the failure rate. "I know there are a lot of weaknesses in the schools but for a whole group of people to take exams and every single one of them to fail, I have my doubts about that," Ms David-Tarpeh said. "It's like mass murder." Ms David-Tarpeh said she knew some of the students and the schools they attended. "These are not just schools that will give people grades. I'd really like to see the results of the students," she added. University spokesman Momodu Getaweh told Focus on Africa that the university stood by its decision, and it would not be swayed by "emotion". "In English, the mechanics of the language, they didn't know anything about it. So the government has to do something," he said. "The war has ended 10 years ago now. We have to put that behind us and become realistic."

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, also agreed that yoga, referred as “a living fossil”, was one of the six systems of orthodox Hindu philosophy and was highly venerated in Hinduism. Rajan Zed points out that some sages have described yoga as the silencing of all mental transformations, which leads to the total realization of the Supreme Self. Some have used yoga attempting to gain liberation by removing all sensory barriers. According to Patanjali, author of the basic text, the Yoga Sutra, yoga is a methodical effort to attain

Car buyers with a creative streak now have the perfect canvas on which to bring their visions to life. Following its successful launch in 2012, Nissan is further expanding its innovative personalisation programme for Juke. As part of the new programme, 11 different exterior styling and design elements are now customisable and available in up to eight different colours and shades. The majority of the components, including 17-inch alloy wheels, roof spoiler, side sills and headlamp finishers are available in all eight available colours. This opens up an exciting world of possibilities for buyers. To mark the expansion of the

personalisation programme, three new trim colours will be added in the coming months: Electric Blue, Mat Black and Black Purple, along with a new design of 18-inch alloy wheel that can specified in silver, black and diamond cut metallic grey finishes. The expanded personalisation programme also includes a number of new cabin features. Four different areas can now be customised with the same colour palette as the exterior. A third of motorists admit to driving without a valid MOT Shocking new findings show that a third of motorists have driven a car knowing it has no MOT. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) surveyed 1,000 UK motorists and found that, of those that have driven a car without a valid MOT, 67% admitted driving for up to a week before the retest, 24% for up to a month, 7% for up to six months and 2% for more than six months. By driving without an MOT, motorists risk fines of up to £1,000, as well as potentially invalidating their motor insurance, which itself counts as a driving offence carrying between six to eight penalty points. Cars older than three years also require a valid MOT before they can be taxed – with further fines for motorists who drive an untaxed car. The research suggests men are more likely to continue driving after their MOT has lapsed – 35% of all male drivers say they have done so, versus 31% of female drivers. There are significant regional differences in the findings. The East Midlands topped the table for remembering to carry out a car’s MOT, with just 15% of motorists in the region saying they have driven a car without a valid MOT. At the opposite end of the spectrum, drivers in the South West were most likely to drive without an MOT, with 41% admitting to forgetting (see full table below). The data also suggests that younger motorists are worst at remembering the test date, with 39% of drivers aged 18-24 saying they have continued to drive after

the MOT had expired. The most diligent motorists were 45-54 yearolds, with only 28% saying the same. To help motorists remember to have their car tested each year, SMMT has teamed up with the Trading Standards-approved garage network, Motor Codes, to offer car owners a free MOT service reminder. Available at www.passmymot.co.uk, the service will send motorists a reminder every year before their car’s annual test of roadworthiness is due. The SMMT research has been carried out in partnership with car manufacturers and their dealer networks throughout the UK as part of the industry's 'Minute Or Two' initiative, which encourages motorists to carry out 10 simple visual checks of their vehicle prior to the MOT test. The full 'Minute Or Two' checklist (also at www.passmymot.co.uk), includes checks of headlights, tyres, windscreen wipers and fluid levels. The website also features a video guide to the checks and a Garage Finder tool, enabling motorists to find their nearest dealer. The 'Minute Or Two' scheme is backed by every major car maker in the UK, with technicians at more than 5,500 manufacturer main dealerships committed to carry out a free 10-point pre-MOT visual inspection to help the vehicle avoid failing its test due to simple-to-fix issues. Manufacturer main dealers are the only outlets recommended by car brands, and all their MOT and service work is carried out by

manufacturer-trained technicians using the highest-quality diagnostic equipment and fully-approved parts appropriate to each specific vehicle. Using a manufacturer main dealer also assures the customer that any required software updates will be carried out to keep the car running at its best. "Each year, a significant proportion of motorists forget their car's MOT, risking safety, fines and penalty points," said Mike Baunton, SMMT Interim Chief Executive. "Manufacturer main dealers are the best place to go to be sure of the most highly-trained technicians, using the parts manufacturers recommend along with the best diagnostic equipment. "With more than 5,500 dealers across the UK carrying out free preMOT checks, along with an MOT reminder service run by Motor Codes, we are helping drivers to avoid basic MOT test fails by spotting simple-to-fix problems before the MOT lapses." Commenting on behalf of the national Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), Sue Robinson, NFDA Director said, "The statistics show that a number of motorists are driving vehicles without a valid MOT, which could result in genuine safety risks to them and other road users. "For the motorist, a visit to their local franchised dealer will ensure the highest standard of customer care, in-depth training and knowledge of the vehicle and that their car meets all safety and legal requirements."

HALF OF CARS FAIL JUST AS WARRANTY COVER DIPS More than one in two used cars on UK roads break down as soon as the car reaches the 60-70k mileage mark, the point at which the level of most manufacturer warranty cover decreases. Automotive specialist Warranty Direct’s analysis of 50,000 live policies found that the average failure rate on a car with 60-70k miles on the odometer was 50.7%. The average cost to repair faults on cars in the 60-70k bracket is £420, but can run into thousands in parts and labour. Axle and suspension issues are most common, responsible for almost a quarter of all issues, followed by electrical components and systems, which account for 19.6%. Whilst some car makers have introduced

longer warranties in recent years, most still provide a standard three years of cover on new cars* and all manufacturer policies are subject to mileage limitations – typically 60,000 miles. Duncan McClure Fisher, managing director of Warranty Direct, said: “Even with the much-improved reliability of modern cars, mileage will take its toll on any vehicle and parts will naturally wear out. “You shouldn’t expect a new car to break down in its first three years but there is a reason that manufacturers, for the most part, limit their warranties to 3 years/60,000 miles and our research highlights that reason. “Even those manufacturers offering five or

seven-year policies will include loopholes in the small print that mean your level of cover takes a dip once you hit a certain age or mileage.” Chrysler owners pay the biggest garage bills - Warranty Direct found the average repair cost for problems occurring between 60,000 and 70,000 miles was £516, compared with the average across all manufacturers of £419. Fiat was the cheapest at £247 on average per repair†. Toyota faults take the most time to repair, at an average of 2.81 labour hours, compared to an average for all manufacturers of 2.29 hours. Fiat models spend the least time in the garage, requiring just 1.57 hours on average for repairs.

17 overage competitors suspended at Youth Games

India’s chief sporting officials were left red faced once again last week after 17 track and field athletes were suspended from competing in the Asian Youth Games. The Athletes in question were all born in 1996, despite competition rules stating that no competitor can be born before 1997 (under 17), leaving just 10 track and field athletes left from the South Asian country. This latest news came just two days after four Indian badminton players were told they could not take part in the Games, in Nanjing, Japan, after officials in India forgot to register the competitors. “It should not have happened. We are trying to find out the reason,” the Indian Olympic Association's interim chief Vijay Kumar Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi. India’s leading sporting bodies have been scrutinised recently following their suspension by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in December after electing corruption-tainted officials to its local association. Subsequently, all athletes currently competing in Japan are taking part as ‘independent’ Olympic athletes under the IOC flag. Athletics officials would not comment on the over-age problems, yet Sport Authority of India chief, Jiji Thomson, blamed the AFI for the mixup. “When a federation gives us a list, we never question it,” Mr Thomson told the Times of India. “It's entirely the responsibility of the federation to pick a team and ensure everything is in order.” Sports Minister Jitendra Singh ordered an inquiry into the matter, saying the government had noted the incidents with ‘considerable disquiet’. In a statement issued by his office last week, Mr Singh said it was important to fix responsibility for the ‘lapses’. He also ordered authorities ‘to put in place a mechanism so that such incidents do not occur in future’.

Sheffield Eid Festival promotes sport in BME communities Thousands flock to Sheffield calling for more adult sports for BME communities

Thousands of people from BME backgrounds flocked to Sporting Equals Sports Zone, at Sheffield Eid Festival on Saturday, to find out how they could get more involved in sports. Participation of BME communities in sport in the UK is low and the Sports Zone highlighted the benefits to communities of getting involved, as well as offering information and unique opportunities to try out different sports and box with an up-andcoming boxing star. Supported by Sport England, sports equality experts, Sporting Equals, joined forces with the National Governing Bodies of Boxing, Football, Tennis, Basketball and Table Tennis to set up their fully interactive Sport Zone at the Millhouses Park based Mela. Sheffield and Hallamshire FA ran

a penalty shoot-out and a football skill session; the LTA arranged for a local tennis club coach Adam Jameel to hold a mini tennis session; the ABAE arranged for Sheffield City Amateur Gym to hold a boxing demo; and Atif Shafiq held sparring sessions with members of the public. Umar Ahmed, Yorkshire Partnership Officer at Sporting Equals, explains how successful the event was saying: “Visitors to the Sports Zones enjoyed taking part and we had people of all ages trying out new sports. Many highlighted a need for access to adult sports, as well as those for kids, for BME communities in the Sheffield area. “As a result, Sporting Equals plans to develop close relationships with sports providers in Sheffield to enable easier access to sport for people of all ages and backgrounds.” Atif Shafiq, professional boxing prodigy from Rotherham, and Cllr Qurban Hussain (Labour) supported the event and even had a friendly spar with each other.

Shafiq said: “The day was a great success, with participants from all ethnic groups enjoying the different sports on offer. I tried to make the boxing sessions with me as fun and enjoyable as possible and I also thoroughly enjoyed the day. “I am honoured to be involved with such a great organisation as Sporting Equals and I will continue to support them. The work they are doing is fantastic and very beneficial to the BME communities.” Meanwhile Cllr Hussain added: “The sport zone was great. It’s really important that we get young people into sport and there is opportunity out there for them. Sport can do a lot to keep people fit and also it can help keep anti-social behaviour at bay. I encourage people of all ages, not just kids, to get involved in sport.I used to do a lot of boxing and it kept me focused. “I am thankful to Sporting Equals for the work they are doing and I hope we can continue to work to benefit the whole community.”
