‘Charity starts at home’ By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Trustees call on Asian communities to step forward and help local charities A husband-and-wife from Leeds are urging more people from the South Asian community to get involved with causes ‘closer to home’ after being appointed Trustees of local charities. Hanif and Rifhat Malik were officially ‘sworn-in’ to their new roles with the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and Martin House Children’s Hospice respectively, after their work in setting up and running the Give a Gift scheme. Through the project, a team of volunteers have hosted Zumbathons, annual 5k runs, ladies evenings, plus much more, all topped off with an annual Ramadan toy appeal which sees

hundreds of gifts handed out at the Leeds General Infirmary and the hospice. Mrs Malik, who helped establish the scheme back in July 2013, continues to lead on many of the projects today and was approached by Wetherby-based Martin House to become a trustee. She said it was ‘imperative’ that people understood the crucial role these local charities play for all communities and said herself, nor her husband, ever thought twice about taking on their new roles. “It was by chance that we both actually got approached to apply to become trustees around the same time as each

other and were subsequently accepted as well,” she said. “We both want to raise the profile of the fantastic work these two charities do, who provide a lot of support to the South Asian communities, but don’t necessarily receive the same support back.” Around 10,000 children each year are reportedly cared for at the Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Heart Surgery Unit, of which 25 per cent are from South Asian communities. Mrs Malik added: “Charity starts at home and these two causes are right on our doorsteps and need help from volunteers to continue to provide the amazing work they do. “When you get involved with

a charity such as Martin House you begin to see all the additional support services in place which are not seen from the outside. The human aspect they bring to the care is incredible and gives a whole family the best care possible during some of their hardest days.” Mr and Mrs Malik added that it was not only monetary donations which they would like to see improve from South Asian communities, but the roles of volunteering as well. The Give a Gift scheme is operated on a voluntary-basis and has helped to raise thousands of pounds for the two causes since its inception. Mr Malik says he believes anyone can help the charities

by giving up just a fraction of their time. “There are so many ways to get involved with helping charities here at home, and in the role of trustees we are now hoping to cascade that message to different communities,” he added. “The two charities are so important for so many families, so I would urge everybody to step forward and follow the Give a Gift example by helping in whatever capacity you can.” Give a Gift was established as a way of allowing members of Leeds’ South Asian community to ‘give back to society’ and is led by the local Hamara Centre, with support of local mosques, businesses and education centres.

Bradford Centre of Excellence looks to turn youths away from crime

A first-hand look at life behind bars By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford’s leaders have taken a proactive step in the fight against youth crime after opening the city’s first Centre of Excellence in Girlington last week. The site, which features in-house mock jail cells, a court and living area, has been developed as part of the city’s pledge to do more to prevent ‘at risk’ young members of society turning to crime. Based at Girlington Community Centre, the facilities will be used by a range of community organisations, as well as some schools. Former criminal ‘Naz’ is one of the people who will be utilising the site alongside his organisation ‘ConSequence’ which works with young people to deter them from a life of crime. Having been handed a nine-year prison sentence for a drug related offence at the age of just 21, he has seen first-hand what life is like behind bars and wants people to understand the ‘harsh realities’ of what prison is really like. “When you are in prison you are on your own,” the now 34-year-old said.

08703 608 606 Road closures

Essential maintenance work to complete the strengthening of the Westgate Footbridge on Leeds Inner Ring Road continues through to next month after beginning last weekend. Motorists are advised that the A58(M) Leeds Inner Ring Road will be closed to traffic in both directions on the weekends of Friday 20th February and Friday 6th March. The works are part of a programme of ongoing essential maintenance work to upgrade the Inner Ring Road and need to be carried out safely while part of the road is closed. The next closure will start at 7pm on Friday 6th March and will finish at 6am on Monday 9th March. Strengthening work to the central pier, with associated upgrading of safety fence, are planned to be completed during these planned closures.

A design for war

Leeds Museums and Galleries will be working with contemporary artist Ian Kirkpatrick as part of a special project, ‘A Graphic War’, which will investigate the strategic role that graphic design played in the First World War. This collaboration, which was born from Leeds Museums and Galleries’ success in applying to the Leverhulme Artist in Residence grant scheme, will see Ian in the next few months immerse himself in Leeds’ extensive First World War archive and work with young people to reinterpret items from the collection. Ian, working closely with curator Lucy Moore, will draw together artefacts from the Leeds Museums and Galleries’ collections and take an entirely new look at the conflict through the lens of its graphic design outputs. The wide range of research undertaken in ‘A Graphic War’ will culminate in a new body of artwork by Ian, which is set to be presented in a city-wide programme in Leeds during November 2015.

Gold standard construction

Council staff in Leeds are the only local authority gold standard winners in the Considerate Constructor Scheme awards. The prestigious award has been given to the construction services team within Housing Leeds – the council’s housing arm. The team were one of 16 who achieved the gold national award for 2014 and the only council to feature among the list of well-known construction companies. The award was established to improve the image of the construction industry and companies registered are monitored against a code designed to encourage them to go beyond statutory requirements and display exceptional best practice. The 247-strong construction services team provide a full range of refurbishment and maintenance services to the 17,587 council homes in east Leeds. Construction services also make adaptations to 54,000 properties across the city.

Calls to end

non-stun slaughter

British Veterinary Association presents findings at Parliamentary debate which could effect the halal meat industry

Cover story continued According to a 2012 Food Standards Agency report, 97 per cent of cattle, 96 per cent of poultry and 90 per cent of sheep slaughtered using the halal method in UK abattoirs are stunned. But some Muslims insist stunning ‘is not halal’ and animals must be slaughtered without this initial step. The calls upon the British Government to end non-stun slaughter are spearheaded by the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and supported by the RSPCA. The BVA says it launched the Parliamentary e-petition because of ‘scientific evidence’ which shows that slaughter without prestunning allows animals to feel pain and compromises animal welfare. The BVA’s claims are based upon a scientific study which includes the findings of the EUfunded Dialrel project that ran for four years between 2006 and 2010. The project concluded: “It can be stated with high probability that animals feel pain during and after the throat cut without prior stunning.” The total number of signatures on BVA’s e-petition has now reached more than 115,000, showing a significant strength of feeling amongst the public. It is a position supported by the Humane Slaughter Association, the Farm Animal Welfare Council, and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe. The BVA says its concern does not relate to religious belief but to the animal welfare compromise of non-stun slaughter. President of the association, John Blackwell, has said that the BVA has long argued that all animals should be stunned before slaughter to render them insensible to pain and that the signatures on the e-petition clearly shows the strength of feeling about animal welfare at slaughter. Mr Blackwell said: “For BVA and our members, this is a matter of animal welfare at slaughter, plain and simple. We have never – nor would we – argue against religious slaughter. We categorically refute any suggestion that this is an antiMuslim or anti-Jewish campaign.

LEADING THE DEBATE: John Blackwell President of the British Veterinary Association says he is keen to continue discussions with representatives of the halal and kosher meat industry “We have met with, and are keen to continue our positive discussions with, representatives of the halal and kosher meat industry to explore where we can work together to improve animal welfare at slaughter. “BVA finds abuse of animals in any slaughterhouses unacceptable. We would expect for these abuses to be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken by the competent authority.” The BVA points out that recent undercover films of animal abuse in slaughterhouses would warrant sanctions under current welfare legislation, irrespective of whether they occurred in an abattoir implementing stunning or non-stun prior to slaughter. “From pre-birth to slaughter, vets play an active role in not only preventing suffering but actively providing for the welfare needs of all animals. The

veterinary profession is not complacent,” continues Mr Blackwell. “We consistently lobby Government to ensure existing legislation is enforced effectively. We have and will always work to improve the welfare of animals at all stages of their lifecycle. “BVA is calling on the Government to have a consistent approach to animal welfare legislation. “How can the Government on the one hand pride itself and champion the UK on having some of the world’s highest animal welfare standards, but on the other undermine this by allowing slaughter without stunning to continue? “It is clear from the scientific evidence that the welfare of animals is improved by effective stunning at slaughter but we can’t enforce a piece of legislation that does not exist. This is why we call

on the Government to make legislative change now and end non stun-slaughter immediately.” David Bowles, head of RSPCA public affairs, said: “It is no surprise that around eight in 10 people want an end to non-stun slaughter. “There is growing public concern about the welfare of farm animals and people believe animals should be treated as humanely as possible throughout their lives, including at the time of slaughter. “It is important to differentiate between ‘religious’ and ‘non-stun’ slaughter. Our concern does not relate to the expression of religious belief but to the practice of killing by throat cutting without pre-stunning. In fact, around 84 per cent of halal in the UK is pre-stunned demonstrating that animal welfare and religious purpose can work together,” he added.

Greater assisted living

A new £2.1m base where the latest technology will help vulnerable residents live safely at home officially opened last week. The state-of-the-art ‘Assisted Living Leeds’ building at Leeds Dock was opened by civic leaders, staff and some of the people already using the range of technologies that will be based there. As part of the event, a commemorative plaque was unveiled and a time capsule was sealed containing memories of the council’s Community Equipment Service, which relocated to the site after more than two decades in its former base at Roundhay. A partnership between the council and the local NHS, the project has seen a vacant building revitalised with a new reception, office area, training space, meeting rooms, and assessment facilities.

Cleaning up Bradford

Volunteers are continuing to make a positive contribution to the Bradford community through the Thank You Bradford project made up of 40 volunteers, aged 18-60. This was was set up by Bradford Council in August 2014 to improve the environment of the Bradford East area by encouraging residents to help tidy up. The project aims to provide volunteers with valuable work experience and gives them the opportunity to put something back into the community. They will be tidying up and trimming back hedges to help maintain the area between Leeds Road, Barkerend Road, Curzon Road and Killinghall Road on Thursday 26th February between 10am and 4pm.

Repairing Saltaire

The major restoration work in the UNESCO World Heritage Site village of Saltaire has reached another stage. The overgrown trees planted in the 1950s, which had been blocking light from houses and causing extensive pavement damage, have now been removed. The next stage, which is due to begin this week, is the excavation of pits for the replacement of more suitable trees. The roots of the new trees will be planted in their own self-contained underground pits which will prevent them damaging the restored pavement areas. They should be in place by the end of March and if the weather allows, Bradford Council will begin extensive pavement repairs to put right the damage caused by the trees.

Imams head to Paris

Muslims told to ‘reclaim’ peaceful religion from minority fanatics who have ‘hijacked’ it By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A group of British imams headed to the French capital’s oldest synagogue earlier this month to meet with Jewish and Muslim leaders in an attempt to strengthen interfaith relations. In January, four people were killed at a Jewish grocery store by an armed gunman just two days after the shootings at Charlie Hebdo offices. Both attacks were carried out by Islamic extremists. During the British group’s recent visit, they offered support to both communities and spoke with representatives about current concerns and anxieties they are experiencing. Imam Qari Asim, of Leeds’ Makkah Masjid, was one of the delegates who made the trip and said British imams felt ‘compelled’ to visit the nation to show solidarity between Muslim and Jewish communities.

“Our faith, Islam, preaches us that every life, regardless of faith and race, is sacred,” he said. “Grief and pain at the loss of a life, therefore, transcends the boundaries of race and religion. “The recent barbaric attacks on Jewish community have affected us all in the West. They have sent a wave of fear amongst the Jewish community and concern amongst Muslims.”

Muslims. It will not be terrorists but Lassana who will continue to inspire generations.” As well as speaking with members of the different communities, the imams were also taken to the actual kosher supermarket where the attacks took place in January, as well as a number of synagogues to meet with rabbis and imams from France.

“It was not the terrorists who shed blood in Paris, but the Muslim worker in the kosher supermarket, Lassana Bathily, who is a hero to Muslims. It will not be terrorists but Lassana who will continue to inspire generations.” He added: “Imams – British and French – were resolute not to let terrorists dictate the course of history and divide communities. “It was not the terrorists who shed blood in Paris, but the Muslim worker in the kosher supermarket, Lassana Bathily, who is a hero to

RELATIONS: Imams from the UK meet with Jewish representatives inside Paris’ La Victoire Synagogue

The Muslim population in the country is the second biggest religious grouping, and Mr Asim says the message he received from representatives of the demographic was that the community was being ‘blamed’ for the acts of terrorists.

“[We] shared the concern that Muslims have suffered at the hands of violent extremists more than any other community and the deep scars of terrorism have disfigured the ‘Muslim body’,” he said. “This calls for an intelligent strategy to defeat the toxic ideology at an intellectual and practical level. “[We] highlighted some of the best practice that is prevalent amongst British Muslims and our institutions. More importantly, what were the factors that made British Muslims proud of both our religious and national identity.” Mr Asim added that despite such beliefs, the group were ‘warmly welcomed’ by the Council of Jewish Insitution of France (CRIF) during a pre-arranged, constructive meeting. An open and ‘frank’ dialogue took place between the two groups regarding the challenges that lie ahead and the steps that need to be taken, jointly, to overcome them.

Community calls for an end to unsightly mess

February 2014 - 3rd Edition

ACTION: Local residents from Oulton Terrace and Rothesay Terrace want to see the fly-tipping stop in hope of turning land into a community garden

‘Stop the fly-tipping’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A residents group, who have continuously seen flytippers discard their waste on land they hope to turn into a community garden, say more needs to be done to deter the ‘late night droppers’. The pathway between Oulton Terrace and Rothesay Terrace, in Great Horton, has become a notorious dumping ground for all items, from furniture to electrical goods. Despite attempts to stop those committing the acts, rubbish continues to build up with mattresses and sofas currently spilling over to the narrow path. Amjad Ahmed, chair of the local Shearbridge Residents Association, says the problem has been a consistent one for a number of years yet hopes it can be resolved soon. “People are collecting rubbish from homes around here and telling residents, ‘we can dispose of your unwanted items for a tenner’ and then just dumping it all here,” he said. “Last year there was trade waste dumped here, with a number of fridge freezers and even though they were moved because somebody got the plates of the driver, there is still a big problem. “We are working with the local councillors to hopefully

turn the site into a safe place for all residents but it is just taking so much time.” Amongst the local councillors backing plans for a community garden project is Cllr Nazam Azam. He says the residents have previously excelled in their ‘localism’ and deserve a clean area. “The residents around here have come up with a brilliant proposal for the space to be used as a recreation space,” he said. “I am very confident that they will not only get what is desired for this space but what is required and by working with the council, it will become a space that benefits the local community.” Najib Khan is another resident who has lived in the area all his life and is currently treasurer for the residents association. He believes homeowners would be willing to take on parts of the challenge themselves if the council allowed them the licence to carry out such works. “It has been a problem for a long time now,” he explained. “I was walking the children to school the other day and a brick just fell off the wall so there is clearly a lot of work that needs to be done. “Hopefully we will get some help soon and the council will grant the licences to begin work on the garden project.”

Prime Minister’s message to the Asian Express

‘Keep up the great work’ Following a successful visit from Britain’s Prime Minister earlier this month, the Asian Express Newspaper has been told to ‘keep up the great work’, by David Cameron himself. In a letter received at the offices last week, Mr Cameron wrote of his gratitude to all those involved in organising his ‘most enjoyable visit’ during his time in Leeds. Mr Cameron arrived at the Armley-based offices of the publishing group on Thursday 5th February to meet with the team behind the news, as well as taking part in a conference held by the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN). The ABDN is a premier business network which delivers activities and events that promote ‘outsidethe-box’ thinking. It is run by a board of Directors who give their time voluntarily to make a difference to the community they live in. After greeting those in attendance, Mr Cameron spoke passionately with the Asian business

He then held a one-to-one interview with Asian Express editorin-chief, Andleeb Hanif, where the topic of Islamophobia was discussed, centred on the Eric Pickles letter to Mosques across the country. Concluding the visit with more meet-and-greets, plus photo

Solar power lights up towns

Council house residents are set to save money, and help the environment, with the installation of the first solar panels as part of a multi-million pound investment by Kirklees Council. The project will increase the number of Council houses with a solar system installed by up to 2,000, helping residents save up to £100 a year, rising to £200 annually over the longer term. The project is being undertaken in an effort to reduce fuel poverty for local people and properties with poor thermal efficiency will be targeted first based on Government guidelines. It is part of the Council’s commitment to tackle the cost of living crisis, by working with local people to increase their income and reduce their outgoings.

Huddersfield’s Spanish history

On Sunday 8th March, Tolson Museum in Huddersfield is hosting a film that tells the story of the Basque children who were evacuated to the United Kingdom during the Spanish Civil War. The film accompanies the exhibition ‘Basque Children in Yorkshire 1937’ which is currently on display at the museum on Wakefield Road. Both have been compiled by the Basque Children ’37 Association UK to commemorate and preserve the story of the 4,000 children who were shipped to the United Kingdom in 1937 after the destruction of Guernica. The’ los ninos vascos’, as the children were referred to, were dispersed to ‘colonies’ set up all over the country, including one in Almondbury, Huddersfield. The film showing starts at 2pm and will last approximately an hour.

Be Clear on Cancer

A ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign in Kirklees was launched earlier this month to raise awareness that ongoing heartburn can be a sign of cancer. Latest data reveals around 93 people in Kirklees are diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancers each year. The scheme in Kirklees urges people from the area to visit their doctor if they have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, as this can be a sign of oesophageal or stomach cancer. The campaign launch coincides with results of a new survey commissioned by Public Health England, which reveals that nationally, only one in two people (55 per cent) would visit their doctor if they experience the above symptom.

BUSY: Call Lane, located near the Corn Exchange, only allows hackney carriages and buses to travel on the road in certain hours between Friday and Monday

‘Call’ for access Drivers question latest bus lane regulations

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers in Leeds have questioned why access to one of the city’s busiest streets has been restricted in a move which threatens to ‘severely hamper trade’. Call Lane, near the Corn Exchange in the city centre, hosts a number of late night bars which get exceedingly busy in the evening, especially during weekend hours. Previously, all vehicles were allowed access to the street with no restrictions in place. However, new legislation, rubber-stamped last week, now only allows for Hackney Carriage Vehicles and buses to access the lane at set hours - between Friday and Monday, from 10pm until 5am. Dale Askham, director of the

Leeds Private Hire Drivers Association (LPHDA), questioned the decision which he believes will not only effect drivers but also passengers. “There is nowhere legally around here that a PHV driver can pick up passengers anymore,” he said. “This is a restriction of our trade and something which is exceedingly causing drivers problems. We offer the same services as hackney carriages and buses yet all new legislation seems to be hampering only PHV drivers.” He added: “How are they supposed to drop off people with disabilities? We have not been consulted about any of these new regulations and it is going to affect business massively.” The new legislation arrives just weeks after a petition was handed to Leeds City Council on behalf of PHV drivers which requested

APPEAL: LPHDA director, Dale Askham, and PHV driver, Tasadaq Hussain, stand at the site of Leeds’ newest bus lane

access to bus lanes throughout the city for all cabbies. More than 900 signatures of PHV drivers were gathered and a verdict has yet to be given to those spearheading the appeal. A new request has also recently been made this past week from the LPHDA to question the decision of introducing bus lane operations on Call Lane. Mr Askham continued: “Currently, there are around 5,000 PHV drivers in the city compared to approximately 500 hackney carriage vehicles. There are more drivers in private hire than buses and hackney carriages combined so restricting access to so few appears unjustified.” Tasadaq Hussain has been a PHV driver in the city for more than ten years and has seen a number of new legislations introduced since beginning his role. He added: “Leeds is seen as the

financial hub of the north yet Leeds City Council is restricting crucial public services. “If they want more people to visit the city, then why are they making it so hard for public transport to be available to those who need it most?” A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “After careful consideration we have taken the decision with the support of traders and West Yorkshire Police to only permit access along Call Lane to buses and Hackney Carriages from 10pm -5am as part of a trial period. “This is to ensure that the traffic network in the vicinity of Call Lane remains free-flowing and unobstructed. “Vehicle numbers on Call Lane will continue to be closely monitored and the police will have the option to close the street to traffic at any time if any issues arise.”

UTILISED: During evenings, the bus stop opposite Call Lane has been used by hackney carriage drivers as a base

Anti-racists and Muslim communities protested outside the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London last week to condemn the BBC’s silence in regard to the horrific shooting of three Muslim people in the USA. In stark contrast to the Paris shootings, there was no immediate coverage, it was not headline news or even covered in the main news bulletins. On the other hand there was widespread coverage on social media, where #MuslimLivesMatter trended a reference to the racist nature of the attack and the lack of coverage of it. Sabby Dhalu, Organiser of Stand up to Racism said: "Our condolences and thoughts are with the families and friends of Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha,and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. “We support their calls for this to be considered a hate crime. Any loss of life should be treated equally. Muslim people are consistently portrayed as the perpetrators

A quicker city

Improvements are on course to speed up rush hour traffic in Bradford with various council schemes in the pipeline which should see long-term benefits for road commuters. A survey by the Government’s Department of Transport (DFT) says that the average speed of traffic on ‘A’ roads in the morning rush hour in Bradford is just 20.45 mph. Average speeds in Bradford stayed the same as last year despite falling elsewhere across England, and the district’s future figures could show a marked improvement. As well as a £3.8 million major road works taking place to improve traffic flow on Canal Road at the junction with Stanley Road, plans are being put in place at other congestion hot spots. Improvements to the road network are planned in the coming years at both Greengates and in Keighley town centre, amongst others, which will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

‘Peek’ of her career

Bradford Council has announced that Cindy Peek, Deputy Director of Children’s Services, is to retire from her post. Cindy Peek, who joined Bradford Council in 2008 from Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands, will retire on 7th April after seven years in the role. During that time Cindy has led on a number of important district wide projects. Cindy has overseen the development of 15 new schools across the district, including nine special schools for children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities. She worked closely with schools and other settings to find practical ways of alleviating the impacts of child poverty.

Free childcare

Parents of young children in Calderdale are being given a helping hand with their childcare arrangements, as Calderdale Council is offering free early years education places to around 40 per cent of the borough’s two-yearolds. More than 900 two year old children across Calderdale are expected to benefit from the free offer of early years education and childcare this spring term, providing parents with the opportunity for their child to develop and learn through well-planned play activities in a safe and secure environment. This is a national initiative by the Department for Education (DfE) and is delivered through approved childcare settings in Calderdale.

Symmetrical art

A new exhibition displaying a range of fine and rare objects from the extensive collection of Leeds Museums and Galleries has now opened at St James’ Hospital. Since 2011, Leeds Museums and Galleries, working in partnership with St James’ Hospital, has curated a number of different exhibitions in the atrium of the Bexley Wing which have proved to be very popular with patients, relatives and members of staff to the Leeds Cancer Centre. Each spring a new display is introduced in the hospital’s Atrium, which this year as part of the ‘Mirror Image Museum’ will focus on the theme of symmetry. The exhibition brings together and explores the symmetry that can be seen in everyday life, whether it has evolved in the natural world or been purposefully designed in man-made artefacts.

Bracelets for Blankets

Warm message from Bradford to India

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Determined fundraisers from a school in Bradford have helped purchase more than 500 blankets for some of the world’s poorest families after selling traditional bracelets to their fellow pupils. The ‘Bracelets for Blankets’ team, consisting of Bradford Girls’ Grammar School’s Jana BraunWilson, Amn Bashir, Maleehah Aziz and Muskaan Amini, came together to spearhead the project and sell Himalayan crystal bracelets during their break times. Not only did the quartet market the bracelets, but they also designed and manufactured the products themselves. With the girl’s business savvy attitude, and determination to raise funds for the charity, they were able to sell out of products, setting a new trend amongst their fellow students. In total, more than £340 was

representative for the Trust, thanked the girls for their efforts and sent a number of photos from the individuals who have benefited from the blankets, over in India. He added: “These blankets were greatly appreciated by those who were in great need of the aid.” The Saisruti Charitable Trust is a registered charity which is actively involved in voluntary services mostly in India. Through fundraising work around the world, they help people in the most deprived areas of the South Asian country with healthcare and the provision of clothes. To end he plays the magnificent Triumphal March by the Hull-born Alfred Hollins. Competitively priced lunches are available from 11.30am, ticket holders can enjoy a bite to eat and chat prior to sitting back and enjoying the uplifting musical programme on offer from 1pm.

The right rates

Businesses are being reminded that support is available to help cut their business rates bills, with Calderdale Council giving discounts to local businesses who qualify. There are several types of discount and the Council is urging businesses to get in touch to see if they are eligible. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Marcus Thompson, said: “Times are tough and we know how important every saving is, so we want to give local businesses a helping hand. We are offering a range of support that could reduce their rates bills. But the discounts aren’t granted automatically – eligible businesses need to apply to the Council. “We urge you to get in touch if you think you qualify.” Cabinet Member for Economy, Cllr Peter Caffrey, added: “These discounts are supporting economic development in our borough, hopefully helping business growth and attracting new investment to the area.”

‘A Call to Arms’ exhibition

A new exhibition showing rarely seen recruitment posters from the First World War, is to be launched at Wakefield Museum this month. Called 'A Call to Arms – the art of persuasion' the exhibition runs from 28th February until 26th September. It shows posters from the museum's collections that have not been on display for at least 20 years. The 34 posters are all from the 1914 /1915 period, before compulsory recruitment to the armed services, was introduced. They were mainly produced by the Parliamentary recruitment committee and are part of a national campaign. The posters attempt to get men to enlist in the army by appealing to their sense of patriotic duty, social responsibility and vulnerability.

Boycott reaches 200 DAYS Passion 4 Palestine protestors hit latest milestone By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A group of campaigners, who have stood outside a Bradford McDonalds every evening for twohundred days, are celebrating their latest milestone as they show no signs of stopping any time soon. The ‘Passion 4 Palestine’ group have gathered outside the Leeds Road fast food establishment every night since the beginning of August 2014. According to the group, in excess of 2,200 cars have turned away from the site since their campaign began, with more than 5,000 people opting to eat elsewhere. The members are campaigning against the fast food giants due to what they describe as ‘unethical policies and relations’ with Israel, whose relations with Palestine escalated in the Summer of 2014. More than 1,500 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli air strikes during the conflict with Gaza. Faisal Mohammed, a spokesperson for the Passion 4 Palestine group, insists his team

will continue their demonstrations until ‘justice’ is delivered. “The mainstream media put the Genocide of over two-thousand Palestinians away on the history shelf and diverted people’s attention away from this horrendous crime,” he said.

“We must not forget the ongoing struggle and suffering of Palestinians and must continue creating awareness about these issues and show support in every way we can.” “We refuse to see the genocide as history; we see it as a war crime which hasn't seen justice served to those perpetrators who committed it. “Today, Palestinians are still being killed. Thousands are still injured, homeless and more land is being stolen every day. “We must not forget the ongoing struggle and suffering of

people and continue with this boycott. This has been a very successful campaign and we will have many more to come.” Despite some critics in the early days of ‘over-zealous’ protestors who were described as ‘harassing’ customers, the group has worked hard to improve its image. Now carrying out charity work, and distributing leaflets and

who chose to boycott were provided with leaflets and informed about the Unethical policies and relations McDonalds has with Israel. “Alongside information about McDonalds, other companies that support, fund or trade with Israel, and its crimes, were mentioned and news about what is taking place in Palestine was given.”

Research at the University of Huddersfield has never been ‘brighter’ as scientists take the lead on innovative designs for new flexible solar panels. The project, named NanoMend, is funded by the EU’s Framework Seven research programme, and aims to improve the efficiency of the energy sources, whilst also cutting costs in manufacturing to create greater availability of the panels. Its eventual goal is to develop new technologies for the detection, cleaning and repair of micro and nanoscale defects in thin films that are vital in products such as printed electronics and solar panels. The now much-criticised letter that communities secretary Eric Pickles sent to mosques, telling Muslims they to face the “challenges of integration and radicalisation”, has been supported by the Prime Minister. In a one-to-one interview at the Asian Express offices in Leeds, David Cameron said Eric Pickles' letter, which told more than 1,000 Islamic leaders they "had more work to do" to root our extremists, was "reasonable, sensible and moderate". Eric Pickles letter, which was sent out in the wake of the terror attacks in France, was slammed by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and many other Muslim leaders, who said the letter appeared to re-enforce claims by the far right about Islam not being a part of British society. Mr. Cameron said that anyone reading the letter could see that it clearly praises the Muslim

community saying that they make a great contribution to UK, and that what is happening in terms of extremist terror has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam. The letter had also praised the way Muslims in Britain had responded to the Paris terror attacks and Mr Cameron said that he believes that in no way did the letter intend to undermine Muslims in Great Britain and that it was being taken out of context. When asked if he understands how Muslim’s in Britain may be feeling exposed and vulnerable to stigmatisation by the letter, Mr Cameron says: “We cannot turn away from Islamist extremism, all of us have to look at this and ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative. Obviously we needed the Muslim community in Great Britain to join us on this.”

The Prime Minister said that the Iraq war or 911 attack was just a wake up call to the realisation of radicalisation of vulnerable young Muslim men and that “we cannot turn away from this - all of us have to look at this and is ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative,” he says. He criticised the Governemnt’s old Prevent programme stating that it was a “bit muddled” and that it didn’t do very well on either objectives of trying to support mosques and prevent terrorism. It confused the delivery of Government policy to promote integration to prevent terrorism. “Obviously we need the Muslim community in Great Britain to work with us. “We need to unite to make a clear and loud definition between Islam - a religion of peace and Islamist extremism,

and we need the help of the Muslim leaders on facilitating this,” says the Prime Minister. He added that he feels rooting out terrorism is a generational challenge and feels that it’s something that will take a while to overcome. “We must unite as a nation to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support. “At the same time, we have to stand up and fight against Islamophobia. “It’s a real problem in our country and it makes people feel vulnerable and fearful and it is extremely unpleasant and unnecessary,” he says. Faith leaders, he says, are in a unique position in British society as they have a precious opportunity and important responsibility in explaining and demonstrating how faith in Islam can be part of British identity.

Oxbridge awaits 17 offers for grammar school’s intellectual elite The chance to study at one of England’s most prestigious universities is not a common occurrence yet for 17 academics at a single Leeds sixth form, a life at Oxbridge could be just around the corner. Students from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) are continuing the impressive success rate of their predecessors in securing offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities. Fourteen current Year 13 students

now hold conditional offers from the two renowned establishments, whilst three alumni, who graduated last year, have also received offers. Amongst the nine students holding a conditional offer from Cambridge are two 18-year-olds, Ashwin Venkatesh and Amol Joshi, who both hope to study medicine. The intellectual pair both currently take the same lessons at GSAL and have similar aspirations for their future academic life. Ashwin, from Alwoodley, noted

the moment he opened the letter confirming his conditional offer last month and how determined he was now to achieve the grades ‘expected’ of him. “My first and second interviews at Cambridge were held on 10th December and I felt they went as well as they could have but there is always a bit of uncertainty about whether you have done enough,” he said. “When I received my letter it didn’t really sink in at first and it still hasn’t now. To have the chance to study at Cambridge is a major opportunity and I am very thankful for that. “I phoned my mum after reading the letter and she broke down crying on the phone. It is a big achievement but I think all of us are now even more determined to achieve the grades expected of us and attend Cambridge next year.” Amol, from Moortown, added that he was less confident following his interview but remained calm under pressure to impress the interviewees. “I was a bit nervous after the interview because I knew I had made some mistakes but the important thing was that I was able to guide myself to a valid

conclusion,” he said. “My letter arrived on 10th January like Ashwin and he actually phoned me in the morning to say ‘I’m in, how have you done’, before I had even looked. “I sent him a message later that day saying ‘you’re stuck with me for another six years’ which felt really good.” Last year, 17 students from GSAL received offers from Oxbridge colleges, with this year’s tally equalling the record for the school. Teacher Ray Peacock is GSAL’s Oxbridge coordinator. He said he was ‘delighted’ to once again see a number of GSAL students receive offers from Oxbridge. Explaining more about the

application process, he said: “It’s a demanding application process that become increasingly has competitive in recent years. “We offer a comprehensive programme of support in school, to help students demonstrate their passion for their chosen subjects on their UCAS personal statement, hone their independent thinking skills in preparation for the interview and prepare for specific admissions tests. “While the candidates engaged fully with our programme it is ultimately their own commitment and hard work that secured these sought after offers, and we are hugely proud of their success.”

Pioneering LANDMARK COLLABORATION: UK-India Centre aims to minimise the indiscriminate use of antibiotics

UK-Indian research centre launched to find solutions to excessive use of antibiotics

Researchers in the UK are set to tackle some of the largest global health problems thanks to a landmark collaboration between the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Government of India Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Nearly £7 million will be invested by the UK, through the MRC and the Newton Fund, and India through the DBT, to develop three major global research centres using high quality research teams– including scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford. One of the ground-breaking centres, the UK-Indian Centre for Advanced Technology for Minimising the Indiscriminate use of Antibiotics (UKICAT-MA), will focus on research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and will be led by the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford to establish smart materials for the detection and target delivery of antibiotics for eye infections. Professor Stephen Rimmer from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Chemistry, who is part of the expert team, said: “Resistance to antibiotics is becoming one of the most important challenges of our age. “A number of challenges exist if we are to avoid descent into a postantibiotic age, including the development of: new antibiotics; new diagnostics and improved delivery systems.

“UKICAT-MA will establish materials for both detection, at the point-of-care, of ocular infections and the targeted delivery of antibiotics to infected sites in the eye. “The enormous benefit of detecting something which works in both a UK and Indian environment is that it will help everyone across

the world.” The Centre involves a multidisciplinary team from the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford (Polymer Chemistry, Clinical and Mechanistic Microbiology and LV Prasad Ophthalmology). Much of the work is based around the idea that certain

materials respond to bacteria by changing state on binding to bacteria. These conformational changes are then either monitored to provide a signal of the presence of the bacteria or they provide a basis for targeting antibiotics to bacteria whilst reducing effects on surrounding tissues.

UKICAT-MA will develop these smart materials to produce contact lenses that give colour indications of bacterial infections and systems for local delivery of therapeutics to infected ocular tissues. Dr Mark Palmer MRC Director of International Strategy, said: “With a 100-year history of strategic international collaboration, MRC scientists today collaborate with researchers in more than 100 countries. We know diseases don’t recognise international borders and that addressing health problems around the world demands a global response. “These exciting partnerships between excellent scientists in India and the UK is a key part of our international effort to pool expertise and resources and deliver research that will make a real difference to global health.” Prof K VijayRaghavan, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, said: “The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, is delighted to partner with the MRC in creating research centres which will address vexing challenges in medicine through quality science and collaboration. India is committed to working with the best in the world, for India and for the world. “We are acutely aware that the fruits of our partnership can mean better lives for the most needy everywhere and are committed to make the collaboration succeed.”

Roopa Panesar to close ‘Women in Arts’ programme

One of the UK’s leading sitar players will be plying her trade in Leeds next month as crowds are treated to a selection of melodious tunes in the city centre. Leicester-born Roopa Panesar will be performing as part of South Asian Arts-uk’s (SAA-uk) ‘Women in Arts’ programme which comes to a climatic end on Saturday 7th March. The talented musician broke the trend in the classical world of Indian music when she arrived on the scene, building up a reputation as one of the world’s finest female sitar players, and is one of only few UK acts to be recognised in India. Trained by sitar maestro and educationalist, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, her most recent tour of the South Asian country saw her sell out venues in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata whilst her presence in England also continues to grow. Over the last year, SAA-uk has recognised the women of the Indian music community by holding a series of performances across Yorkshire, celebrating their musical achievements. The inclusion of Roopa’s

performance on the final night of the project is a ‘fitting end’ according to SAA-uk chief executive, Keranjeet Kaur Virdee. She said: “Our Women in Arts series wouldn’t be complete without a performance from Roopa, and what better way to end the programme than by inviting her to share her talent with the Leeds College of Music. “Roopa is regarded as one of the best Sitar players to come out of the UK and, coupled with Shri Bhupinder Singh Chaggar’s talents on Tabla the evening promises to be a fantastic event.” SAA-uk’s Women in Arts programme has seen varied performances over the last year, including children’s stories and shows about the oppression of women. Keranjeet added: “The programme has proved a huge success over the last twelve months, with performances from lots of inspiring women really

showing the value of female performers. “SAA-uk plays an important role in celebrating these women’s wonderful talents and we are delighted that so many have enjoyed the programme. “The arts are a wonderful mechanism for joy and happiness that enables people to come together. We are thrilled to be a part of it.” The sitar has been a prominent instrument in Indian Classical and Hinduistic music since the 16th century. The instrument has also become popular in the West with bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones adopting the rich, exotic sound, with ‘Norwegian Wood’ by The Beatles, becoming the first song to introduce the plucked string instrument to the Western World in 1965. BUSINESS: The Ethical Print team will travel to Buckingham Palace for the finals, pictured (Front l-r) Fatima Yunus, Lohash Lubsir-Latif, Raheel Kamran, Suhail Rahim, Hamza Tanvir, (Back l-r) Muhammad Yunus, Izaan Akhtaar, Mr Patel

Enterprising students head to the finals A team of young entrepreneurs from a Dewsbury school will be taking their business to the capital next month, after they reached the final of a national competition. The seven members of Westborough High School’s ‘Ethical Print’ group have shown they certainly possess the skills to succeed in a business-savvy environment. Since setting up their company last year, as part of the ‘Tycoon in Schools’ initiative, the students have produced newsletters that promote local activities, whilst gaining revenue by selling advertising space. The money raised by the group during a seven-week trading period at the end of last year saw Ethical Print secure sixth place in a profit league of almost 200 teams nationally, raising £5,289 in total. In recognition of their success, they have been invited to a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace in March, alongside eight other student-companies hoping to be crowned the overall winners. Headteacher of Westborough High School Jennifer Napper said: “We are immensely proud of the hard work, creativity and resilience shown by our students in this extremely tough competition. “They certainly deserve their place in the final and we are very excited that the awards ceremony will take place in Buckingham Palace. “I have no doubt this is a life changing opportunity for the students. The Tycoon in Schools competition is just what we need to inspire

young people and help them see the link between school and the real world. “The enterprising culture encouraged by the initiative, together with our recent outstanding examination results, means that students have a bright future to look forward to.” Once the deadline for sales passed, the group submitted an evaluation report to a judging panel chaired by successful entrepreneur and star of Dragons’ Den Peter Jones CBE. Mr Jones said: “I’ve been completely blown away by the standard of entries in this year’s competition and

remaining funds are to be reinvested so that the group can continue with the social enterprise. The chosen charities are the RSPCA, the Salvation Army, Macmillan Cancer Support and Water Aid. The newsletter also features articles raising awareness of environmental issues. Fatima Yunus, sales manager for Ethical Print, said: “By giving our profits to charity we are offering organisations the opportunity to donate in a way that is beneficial to them. We’ve had a great response and we’re really excited about continuing the business and hopefully sharing our model with other schools.” Launched by Peter Jones and run by his charity, the Peter Jones Foundation, Tycoon in Schools – now in its third year – gives schoolchildren across the UK the opportunity to develop their own real-life businesses. After pitching an idea to their teachers, they receive a loan of up to £1,000 from the charity to help kick-start their companies. Lukman Patel, head of ethics at Westborough, said the students’ unique business model had been a huge success. “Winning this competition would give us the platform to support similar social enterprises throughout the country in partnership with the Peter Jones Foundation,” he said. “We want to help many more students to raise funds for charities, boost their local economies and help reduce the carbon footprint of their new advertising clients.”

Buckingham Palace awaits for Ethical Print team deciding who should go through to the final has not been easy. After long deliberation, we’ve chosen these amazing and diverse businesses and I can’t wait to meet them at our awards ceremony. “The Westborough High School students have developed an interesting and sustainable business idea. Their proactive and professional approach is well deserving of a place in the final.” The students have decided to distribute their profits between five charities, all of which have also received considerable coverage in the final newsletter. BROTHERS: Amir Khan and his brother Haroon served up food on Monday 10th February, alongside members of the Amir Khan Foundation

Amir Khan fights homelessness in Leeds Two-time world champion Amir Khan was fighting in the corner of society’s most vulnerable earlier this week as he helped feed the homeless in Leeds. Showing his support for local charity, St George’s Crypt, he attended the event alongside his team from the Amir Khan Foundation, as well as councillors and members of the local Muslim community. Amir was joined by brother, and fellow boxer, Haroon, as they served up meals from the charity’s kitchen to more than 80 people, whilst speaking with those in attendance. The welterweight boxer then joined some of the service users whilst they ate to talk further about why he was visiting on the day, and to learn more about the crypt’s work. Speaking ‘out of the kitchen’, Amir said: “The Amir Khan Foundation is about giving back to the local people and local communities.

St George’s Crypt visit proves a knockout success

“A lot of people don’t have the right support in their lives at the moment and that is what we want to give them.” Riz Malik, on behalf of the Amir Khan Foundation, added: “We in the Foundation are looking for opportunities to make a real difference to people who have suffered disadvantage and poverty in their lives. “St George’s Crypt – through its work with homeless people since 1930 – is an excellent example of a charity producing innovative solutions for its clients, and we hope to be able to establish a long term relationship with the Crypt in helping them to continue producing effective solutions”. The Amir Khan Foundation was launched in August last year and has been set up to support

deprived, disadvantaged children and young people - both internationally and nationally. Last week’s event was arranged with the help of Leeds City Council who were approached by

the foundation requesting to be put in touch with a charity which works with young people who are in challenging situations due to adverse life chances. Martin Patterson, a Director of the Crypt, said: “We are delighted that Amir Khan and the team from the Foundation have been able to visit the Crypt today. “We concentrate on providing effective training and engagement opportunities in order to help our clients to move in life from an increasingly complex range of challenges brought on by issues as homelessness, addiction, mental and physical health problems, poor education and family breakdown. “Amir’s visit is a real inspiration for our clients and they were delighted to meet him today.” Also present on the day were a number of city councillors and Imam at the local Leeds Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim MBE. Mr Asim said the work carried out at the charity for the past 85 years was a ‘credit to the city’ whilst last week’s event with Amir, was extra positive for the Muslim community. “It is important that, from a Muslim perspective, we see funds raised in this country, stay in this country as well as going abroad,” he said. “We need to help people here at home, and improve the financial state of people struggling, due to no fault of their own.” He added: “I was very pleased to be involved with the project on Monday and to see the Amir Khan Foundation up-close helping local communities.”

Birkby fire suspect detained after 12 years on the run

REMEMBER: A statue stands in Birkby today in memory of the family who lost their lives

A man, suspected of killing eight members of the same family during an arson attack on their Birkby home in 2002, has finally been arrested in Pakistan. 32-year-old Shahid Mohammed has been on the run since skipping bail following the horrifying attack which left five children and three adults dead. Back in May 2002, Mohammed and three other men smashed a downstairs window of the Osborne Road house, poured petrol through the letterbox, and ran when they turned the terrace home into an inferno. Six-month-old Najeebah Nawaz, Aneesa Nawaz, two, Tayyaba Bootall, three, Ateeqa Nawaz, five, Rabiah Bootall, 10, Muhammed Ateeq-Ur-Rehman, 18, and

Nafeesa Aziz aged 35 were all killed that night, whilst Zaib-U-Nisa, 54, died in hospital a week later. Three Huddersfield men, Shaied Iqbal, Shakiel Shazad Amir, and Nazar Hussain, were previously convicted for their part in the crime, with the prior convicted on eight counts of murder. Iqbal and Hussain were each charged with manslaughter, whilst an investigation was launched into the whereabouts of Mohammed. Det Supt Lisa Griffin, of West Yorkshire Police, said authorities were now working on bringing Mohammed back to the UK to put him in front of a court. “We have informed members of the Chisti family of the latest development in

the case and will continue to keep them informed throughout,” she said. “Operation Elvington has clearly been a major and long-running inquiry and I thank residents who have come forward with information over the years for their support. “We remain utterly focused on working with the UK Foreign Office and authorities in the nation in which the 32-year-old is currently being held to bring him back to the UK to be put before a court.” Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman added that it had been a long search for the ‘missing killer’ and he was ‘relieved’ to finally see him captured. “I am pleased and relieved for the family that this has

case, have done their best to find him. “We must be restrained now. He needs to go through the correct process and have a fair trial.”

Championing Anti-racism A primary school in Bradford, which has previously been commended for its work on promoting anti-racism, held a number of special activities throughout last week as part of its annual Stephen Lawrence Week. Pupils at Horton Grange Primary worked with local artists to create artwork and canvases, exploring different ethnicities and religions, with the aim of learning about other cultures. Culminating in a unique exhibition for parents, children and the community this week, all the work completed will be on show at the school. Horton Grange was awarded its Stephen Lawrence Standard Mark previously – an award given to schools that achieve cultural tolerance and respect. Niela Ahmed, equalities coordinator at the school, initially introduced the project in 2012 and has since seen pupils take part in a range of activities looking at different cultural issues around the world. Explaining why the pupils celebrate the week every year, Mrs Ahmed said: “It's really important that the whole school gets involved in initiatives such as this because we are asking children to develop the skills of mutual respect, understanding and tolerance of all people from different ethnicities,

ARTY: Pupils from Horton Grange Primary School have been involved in a number of art projects as part of their annual Stephen Lawrence Week, pictured with equalities co-ordinator, Mrs Niela Ahmed

TOLERANCE: Pupils have painted pictures of famous figures as part of their antiracism lessons

such as Martin Luther King Jr, and Malcolm X, whilst older children sewed messages of tolerance on canvases. Mrs Ahmed added: “The children have loved the art based workshops that have focussed on anti-racism. “They have enjoyed making stained glass windows, portraits of famous figures and the sewing projects, all of which will be showcased at an anti-racism art exhibition for parents and children at the end of the week.”

Stephen Lawrence week teaches about all cultures backgrounds and cultures. “Stephen Lawrence week allows the school to celebrate differences, raise awareness of the issues of racism and to promote the ethos of equality, cohesion and diversity. “It is key for us that children understand the importance of

treating everyone with respect no matter what the colour of their skin is. “By learning about these issues in society the pupils know that they are, and feel safe, in school.” Last year, pupils took part in fair trade workshops and learnt about

child labour in different countries around the world. Events planned for this year focussed more on understanding other’s religions, cultures and backgrounds closer to home. Some pupils painted famous figures who champion anti-racism,

Fundraisers walk over hot coals in aid of charities

Keep it under your hat T O he general legal principle is that any documentation disclosed for the purposes of litigation may only be used for the purposes of the proceedings in which it is disclosed. There are however exceptions to this general rule, including where; • the document has been read to or by the court, or referred to, at a hearing which has been held in public; • the court gives permission; or • the party who disclosed the document and the person to whom the document belongs agree. Litigation involving sensitive areas such as intellectual property may cause parties to restrain from disclosing certain documents particularly if their opponent is a competitor or they run the risk of their trade secrets being disclosed to the public at large. To safeguard businesses, an application can be made to Court to seek to permanently restrict the use of a document which has been disclosed in proceedings even where the Court case was held in public. The types of documents which can be subject to these prohibitory Court orders were considered in the case of Smith & Nephew plc –v- Convatec Technologies Inc. A number of legal battles have arisen over the years between Smith and Nephew plc (“S&N”) and Convatec Technologies Inc (“Convatec”) involving their highly confidential intellectual property rights. The most recent case involved a patent of Convatec’s for a wound dressing using sodium chloride at a concentration between 1 and 25%. S&N had created a wound dressing which used sodium chloride at a concentration of 0.77%. The Court held that in deciding whether the figure of the concentration level of sodium chloride was within the range of Convatec’s

patent, the concentration levels would have to be 0.95% or above. The Court held that although the end product did not infringe Convatec’s intellectual property, S&N’s experiments conducted in the course of gaining regulatory approval for their wound dressing had used sodium chloride concentrations above 0.95% and was an infringement of Convatec’s patent. In the course of these proceedings S&N had disclosed documents relating to: • the manufacturing process and equipment • dealings with the regulatory authorities seeking their approval of the wound dressing • commercial strategy S&N sought an Order from the Court prohibiting the use of these documents after trial to protect their classified commercial information and to protect their new product. The Court granted a permanent order prohibiting the use of the documents relating to S&N’s manufacturing process and their commercial strategy. The Court took the view that “although they played a crucial role to the Court in determining the issues the outcome could be understood without them.” However, in relation to the documents revealing an insight into S&N’s approach in gaining approval from the necessary regulatory authorities, the documents did not reveal S&N’s ‘know how’ nor did they damage S&N in any way. Consequently an order prohibiting the use of those documents was refused. The case highlights the importance the Courts place on the general principle but only to the extent of protecting businesses’ knowledge and dexterity. We at Blacks have a specialist team dealing with all types of intellectual property disputes.

n 20th December, brave volunteers walked over hot coals and flaming fire of 1,000°F bringing flocks of curious spectators and supporters across Bradford to Manningham’s Landmark, Carlisle Business Centre. Staff from the Carlisle Business Centre organised the Fire Walk– arranging promotional materials to recruit participants who each committed to raising a minimum of £50. Fire walking has been around for thousands of years with early Indian references dating back as far as 1200BC. It has been used as a healing ceremony, religious ritual and a rite of passage. In more recent years fire walking has been used as an opportunity to address fears, focus the mind, boost confidence and develop individuals and teams. One of the volunteers; Zahra Niazi, said: “The thought of walking through fire was really scary. But as I faced my fears, I became calm and suddenly I was standing on top of the hot coals. I felt a huge surge in endorphins and feeling of achievement and wanted to walk through the fire again.” Volunteers attended a one hour 30 minute training session prior to the fire

walk, led by a specialist trainer; Unite and Ignite. Children with Cancer and pregnant women identified as high risk benefitted from £1,600, ensuring their Christmas and New Year was one filled with hope. Sam Keighley, CEO of Carlisle Business Centre said: “The wonderful thing about doing this particular challenge was that it encompasses everything we stand for. It is a real testament to what we do and our staff, who were willing to walk over hot coals for the people we serve in Bradford. It showed with the right mindset and support, any obstacle can be overcome and that’s what we, as a charity help people do.” Carlisle Business Centre is a not for private profit organisation, driven by a dedicated workforce, that's supported by a voluntary board of directors. We operate as a social enterprise that donates its generated profit; to the Action For Community Ltd charity, enabling us to proudly support the local community. Teen planned London beheadings

A British teenager who rapidly became radicalized after converting to Islam was convicted last week of planning to behead a soldier. A jury at London's Central Criminal Court found 19-year-old Brusthom Ziamani guilty of preparing an act of terrorism. The London-born teenager was raised by Jehovah's Witness parents but converted to Islam early in 2014 and became influenced by the radical group al-Muhajiroun. Prosecutors said Ziamani was inspired by the two Islamic extremists who murdered soldier Lee Rigby in a London street in 2013. They said he researched the location of army cadet bases in London and told his girlfriend he planned to ‘kill soldiers’ before he was arrested in August with a 12-inch (30-centimeter) knife and a hammer in his backpack.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said the highly anticipated unveiling of London’s latest Mahatma Gandhi statue will take place on Saturday 14th March, in the historic Parliament Square. The bronze sculpture will stand alongside current iconic figures, Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill, as it is unveiled by Indian finance minister, Arun Jaitley. It will be the focal point for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Gandhi's return to India from South Africa to kick-start India's independence movement. The announcement of its unveiling date came after the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust surpassed the £1million mark in

donations, with steel tycoon, Lakshmi N Mittal, adding £100,000 and the Infosys Board, chaired by K V Kamath, donating a further £250,000 in the last few weeks. “The statue in Parliament Square not only marks his (Gandhi’s) huge importance in the history of both our countries, but will enrich the firm bond of friendship between the world’s oldest democracy and its largest,” Cameron said in a statement. “Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration. His approach of non-violence will resonate forever as a positive legacy not just for the UK and India, but the world over. “He was a man of great insight and many of his observations remain as fresh and relevant today as when he first made them that ‘we should be the change we wish to see in the world’ is timeless advice, well worth following.” The sculpture will portray the Father of the Indian Nation draped in a shawl based on pictures from his last visit to the UK in 1931. Created by leading British sculptor Philip Jackson, he has been sculpting the statue since Chancellor George Osborne and Leader of the House of Commons, William Hague, announced the plans for the memorial in July 2014. Lord Meghnad Desai, the founderchair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said it was ‘great’ to see a monument ‘honouring Gandhi in one of his favourite cities’. “He is the first Indian and the only person honoured with a statue in the Square who never held public office,” Lord Desai said. “Generous donors have contributed sums from a pound up to hundreds of thousands of pounds from the UK, India and around the world. “On behalf of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust we thank all who made it possible for us to exceed our target of a million pounds within six months. As Gandhi said 'If the cause is right the means will come'.” PRAISE: Prime Minister David Cameron labelled Gandhi an ‘inspiration’ with the statue further strengthening relationships between the UK and India

Two men who oversaw a cannabis farm network across the Midlands netting them a multi-million pound fortune - are now behind bars after West Midlands Police brought their drugs empire to an immediate halt. Nirmal and Darryl Saund posed as respected businessmen - operating out of a Birmingham company called The Cayman Group - to strike rental deals on industrial units and residential addresses in Northamptonshire, Herefordshire, Leicester and Shropshire. But having secured leases, the pair kitted out the premises with sophisticated hydroponics equipment and employed members of the Vietnamese community to act as live-in growers. Between September 2012 and June last year, when they were arrested by West Midlands Police, it’s estimated they had netted around £35million in drugs profits. West Midlands Police coordinated a major investigation into the family following cannabis factory finds by police forces across the Midlands. At Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday 18th February, both men were jailed - for 10 years and six months, and nine years respectively. In total, six members of the Vietnamese community were also arrested from cannabis farms run by the Saunds, some of whom went on to be jailed.

Act ‘FAST’ South Asians urged to take immediate action when facing stroke symptoms

• Annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign launches to highlight the symptoms of stroke • 10,000 strokes could be prevented annually if mini strokes were spotted and treated • The risk of stroke amongst South Asians is around double the general UK’s population • Just over a third would recognise the warning signs which could mean a major stroke is imminent

The campaign urges people to Act FAST if they notice any of the following symptoms, even if they disappear within a short space of time:

CAMPAIGN SUPPORTER: Comedian and actor Sanjeev Bhasker has backed the stroke awareness drive as Asian’s have a higher risk of stroke than the general population

• Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? • Arms – can they raise both their arms and keep them there? • Speech – is their speech slurred? • Time – If they notice any of these symptoms it is time to call 999

Public Health England has launched the annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign, which highlights the common symptoms of stroke and mini strokes and encourages people to call 999 if they notice the symptoms in others or experience them themselves. The campaign specifically targets South Asians as it is crucially important that these groups know the symptoms of stroke and mini strokes as their risk is around double the general population in the UK. A mini stroke has similar symptoms to a full stroke, except that these symptoms last for a much shorter amount of time. Without immediate treatment, around one in five of those who experience a mini stroke will go on to have a full stroke within a few days. Early intervention following a mini stroke can greatly reduce the risk of having another stroke. However, while 59 per cent of people surveyed cite stroke as one of the top three conditions they are concerned about behind cancer, new research reveals today that less than half (45 per cent) would call 999 if they experienced the symptoms of a mini stroke. Sanjeev Bhasker, comedian, actor and campaign supporter said: “Family is a really important part of my life, and when a family member has a stroke, it can be devastating for the patient and the rest of the family. “As a community we have a higher risk of stroke than the general population so knowing the signs to look out for is crucial for us.

57

“If you or a family member experiences any of the symptoms of a mini-stroke or stroke, please call 999, take immediate action – don’t put it off till tomorrow – it could save a loved one’s life.” Since the Act FAST campaign launched in 2009, an additional 38,600 people have got to hospital within the vital three-hour window meaning that stroke sufferers receive the immediate medical treatment required. This not only results in a greater chance of better recovery, but since the campaign launch over 4,000 fewer people have become disabled as a result of a stroke. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “It’s very important that we continue to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke especially amongst high risk ethnic groups like South Asians where there is a higher prevalence of high blood pressure and diabetes which are significant risk factors that cause strokes.” Dr Pankaj Sharma, Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College London & Hammersmith Hospitals said: “We know that sadly, far too many people dismiss their early warning signs of stroke and delay calling 999. Stroke is a medical emergency and getting the right treatment fast can save lives. “Through this latest campaign we hope as many people as possible know how to act FAST and help reduce the devastating impact a stroke can have.” For more information on the Act FAST campaign visit www.nhs.uk/actfast.

Data reveals Muslim population has risen by one-million

“73% of Muslims said their national identity was British”

The Muslim population of England and Wales increased by more than a million in the space of a decade, a newly published report has revealed, whilst the number of Muslim children attending school has doubled since 2001.

An analysis of 2011 Census data for the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) suggests the Muslim population had increased 75 per cent from 1.5 million in 2001 to 2.7 million, with a third below the age of 15.

The research shows one in 12 school-age children was Muslim and there had been a significant improvement in Muslim education, with just a quarter not having any qualifications compared with twoin- five 10 years previously. But just one in five was in fulltime employment, compared with one in three of the wider population, with the researchers saying Muslims face a ‘double penalty... in entering the labour market - of racial discrimination as well as Islamophobia’. While more than half were born outside the country, 73 per cent said their national identity was British, the British Muslims in Numbers report said. Three-quarters of the Muslim population was concentrated in London, the West Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire and

Humber and 46 per cent lived in the top 10 per cent most deprived areas. It’s also suggested that 71 per cent of Muslim women between the ages of 16 and 24 were not in employment, compared to approximately half the general population. For women aged 25 to 49, it says that 57 per cent of Muslim women were in employment, compared with 80 per cent of women overall. Talha Ahmad, a senior member of the MCB, told the BBC the significant rise in the population could be put down in part to refugees from countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq and conversions. The report, led by Sundas Ali of the University of Oxford, said: “There is need for various stakeholders - Muslim civil society, policy institutes, employers, trade

unions and the Department for Work and Pensions - to facilitate conditions and opportunities in the labour market. "Muslim civil society needs to have a better appreciation of the social realities." Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Taking data from the 2011 census, this important new report from the Muslim Council of Britain helps give us a snapshot of the socio-economic challenges and opportunities now facing Britain's Muslim communities. “What's not in doubt is that British Muslims can be proud of the contribution they make to our country. Drawing on analysis like this, together, we can help create jobs, drive growth and enable more people to get on - building the stronger economy and fairer society we want for Britain's future.”

Taliban could be open to negotiations WITHDRAWAL: The Afghan Taliban have denied the possibility of talks and say they will only negotiate with the United States, something the US say is not a possibility following the withdrawal of troops last year

Maldives former leader arrested

Police in Maldives arrested former president, Mohamed Nasheed, on Sunday after a court said he might flee the country to avoid hearings on terrorism charges, leading to clashes between his supporters and authorities. Nasheed, Maldives' first democratically elected president had been facing criminal charges over his order to arrest a top judge in January 2012. He stepped down just months later, saying he had been overthrown in a coup. Last week the prosecutor-general withdrew the original

Peace talks a ‘possibility’ Senior officials in Afghanistan have suggested that the country’s Taliban are willing to open peace talks with the country’s capital, Kabul, as early as next month, despite denial from members of the extremist group. The reports breathed fresh hope into the country’s peace efforts following the withdrawal of mostly US-led troops last year, whilst also signalling a huge boost for Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani. It is believed that the renewed push for negotiations appeared to be driven by evolving relationships between Afghanistan, Pakistan and China, which recently offered to help broker talks. On Thursday, a senior Pakistani military official said Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, told Ghani during a visit this week that the Taliban were willing to begin negotiations as early as March. “They have expressed their willingness and there will be

Indian-origin millionaires based in London who often visit India. “Since the London economy has recovered, developers are now starting to launch overseas projects in the capital in order to tap into the wealthy expatriate and other international people who are based in London either part or full time,” said Peter Wetherell, chief executive of high-end London estate agents Wetherell which has started selling the flats in the exclusive property.

But these things are not so quick and easy,” the official, who is close to the army chief, told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “But there are very clear signals... and we have communicated it to the Afghans. Now many things are with the Afghans and they are serious.” However, despite the positive suggestions, Taliban representatives, including official spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the group would only speak with the US and not the Kabul government. A senior member of the Afghan Taliban claimed by telephone from Qatar that their negotiators held a first round of talks with US officials in Qatar on Thursday, something the US this time denied. Instead, a White House spokeswoman said the United States remained supportive of an Afghan-led

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States had not held indirect talks with the Taliban since May 2014, when it worked through Qatar to free Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. The U.S. soldier, who disappeared from his base in Afghanistan in 2009, was freed in a controversial prisoner swap for five inmates from the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Ghani himself has not directly commented on the possibility of talks but promised transparency. “I will not conduct any negotiation in secret from my people,” he was quoted as saying in a statement.

North Carolina murders The fathers of the three promising Muslim students shot in their Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA apartment spoke before their funeral on Thursday 12th February, calling on Americans and the rest of the world to understand that they died in a hate crime. Slain on the Tuesday 10th February night shooting were dental student Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21 and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. Police had said the attack was preceded by a long-standing dispute over parking with their neighbour Craig Hicks, 46, who has been formally charged on the murder of the three students. However, in the wake of the killing of three promising students there has been an outcry about how Western media has failed to cover this story. The news originally spread fast on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, mainly by Muslims, and has sparked a worldwide social media and human rights outcry of hashtag “Muslim Lives Matter.” Despite the assumption that Hicks attacked the students over a parking dispute, many from the Muslim global community believe the attack is related to religious or ethnic discrimination. The father of the two women who lost their lives has called it a hate crime. The women’s father, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, who has a psychiatry practice in Clayton, USA, said regardless of what

Fathers of slain USA Muslim students maintains “It was a hate crime”

prompted the shooting, Hicks’ underlying animosity toward Barakat and Abu-Salha was based on their religion and culture. The three students all grew up in Raleigh. The two women graduated from Athens Drive High School, and Barakat graduated from Broughton High School. They all attended N.C. State University as undergraduates, where they all earned honours. Barakat finished in 2013, and Yusor Abu-Salha graduated last fall. Razan Abu-Salha, a design student, made the dean’s list in her first semester in the fall. Yusor Abu-Salha was to enroll at UNC’s dental school next fall, joining her husband there. They planned to open a practice together, but both advocated for global dental health, providing care and supplies to people in the United States and the Middle East. On 29th January, Barakat posted a Facebook photo of a Durham project that gave dental supplies and food to more than 75 homeless people this year. Barakat was scheduled to travel with 10 other dentists this summer to Reyhanli, Turkey. There, they planned to treat Syrian refugee children for urgent dental needs, pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste, and support Turkish dentists and clinics.

TRAGIC LOSS: 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, who was Syrian American, his 21-year-old Palestinian American wife, Yusor Mohammad, and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, were killed execution-style by a self-described atheist with a history of harassment and racist intimidation

NEIGHBOUR: 41-year-old Craig Hicks has been charged with first degree murder of all three students

Grandfather injured in ‘excessive force’ Alabama governor confirms police case officer sacked after incident Tragic ferry capsize

A police officer in the US has been fired and a public apology released after an Indian man suffered partial paralysis when an officer threw him to the ground last week. 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel was in Alabama visiting family when he was stopped by police whilst walking down the street alone. He was approached by the Madison police officers after they were called to the site following reports of someone walking around in the area of Huntsville. Mr Patel told the officers ‘No English’ and pointed towards his son’s home yet was thrown to the floor and slammed his face on the ground in the confrontation. As the police attempted to pick him up, his knees buckled and he was helped to the floor, with audio and video footage showing the whole incident from one of the police cars which arrived on scene. In hospital, it was revealed that Mr Patel had broken two vertebrates in his back leading to partial paralysis in his legs, and he was now in rehabilitation after leaving hospital on Monday. Robert Bentley, the governor of

Alabama, called the case one of ‘excessive force’ in a letter he made public last week to Indian general consul, Ajit Kumar, and confirmed the officer involved had been sacked. The governor's letter expressed Mr Bentley's: “sincere apology for this tragic incident to your government, Mr Patel, and the citizens of India who reside and work in our state.” It continued: “I deeply regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Department ... and for the injuries sustained by Mr Patel.” The Madison police chief also apologised during a news conference last week, and confirmed that the southern state would investigate the confrontation alongside the FBI. Meanwhile, officer Eric Parker – the man involved in the incident – has since pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Patel and faces trial on 29th April. Since the event, donors have given around £120,000 on a gofundme.com to pay medical expenses for Mr Patel, who does not have health insurance.

At least 70 people died when a ferry carrying 150 passengers and crew capsized after colliding with a trawler on a river in central Bangladesh, police said on Monday. Rescuers managed to save at least 50 passengers, regional police official Harun-ur Rashid told Reuters. Low-lying Bangladesh, with extensive inland waterways and slack safety standards, suffers regular ferry disasters, with death

tolls sometimes running into the hundreds. More than half the bodies retrieved from the river Padma were women and children, Harun said, adding that rescue attempts had now ended. He said 27 of the bodies were recovered from inside the ferry. Another 43 bodies were pulled from the water earlier on Sunday. Police have seized the trawler and arrested the captain and his two crew.

Who will build them?

INJURED: Sureshbhai Patel was thrown to the ground by officers after being stopped on the streets in Huntsville, Alabama

French Defence Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, will hold talks with his Indian counterpart in New Delhi on Tuesday to salvage a deal to supply 126 Dassault fighter jets that has stalled on the issue of local assembly of the aircraft. Under the terms of the contract, 18 of the Rafale planes will be sold ready to fly while the rest will be assembled at a state-run Indian facility as part of the government's effort to build

a domestic militaryindustrial base. India insists that Dassault take full responsibility for the aircraft produced at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. plant in Bengaluru, a defence ministry official said on Monday ahead of the defence ministers' talks. Officials say negotiations have been deadlocked for a year. “There is only one item on the agenda, the Rafale deal,” the official said.

Footage following the theft shows the bank's vault had been cleaned out, but investigators were waiting to gain access before confirming the total missing, a bank spokesperson said. “Yesterday we could only open one of the treasury's doors. We hope to open the next one today,” the central bank director for Afghanistan's southwestern region, Fazel Ahmad Azimi, said. Weak regulation undermines confidence in Afghanistan's fragile banking system, which has yet to fully recover from a 2010 scandal over a bank that collapsed triggering a financial crisis. An international financial watchdog last year threatened to place Afghanistan on a blacklist and has since warned it needs to do more to enforce laws to regulate its banking sector. The Kandahar raid is believed to have been carried out by a senior official at the bank, an employee of nine years, with the help of his son and brother-in-law who were also on the payroll, according to Azimi. The robbery at the branch in Spin Boldak near the border with Pakistan was discovered on Thursday and investigators believed the group has escaped to Pakistan. The group had removed CCTV recordings before fleeing to Pakistan, Azimi said, but investigators were hopeful that footage might be recovered from the memory chip of the security cameras.

Modi ‘APPALLED’ by own statue CONDEMNED: The statue of Narendra Modi in Rajkot was not welcomed by the Prime Minister who urged people to stop the construction and focus on more ‘worthy causes’

Indian PM reacts to temple built in his honour There are many unique situations India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to find himself in, yet to have an unwanted temple built to deify him, was something he could not have expected. The place of worship was constructed in the western city of Rajkot and includes a seated statue of Modi, topped out with a wind gauge in the shape of his Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) logo. Many may deem such a development as a compliment, yet Modi has been quoted as saying he is ‘appalled’ by the statue which contradicts tradition. “I was appalled,” he said. “This is shocking and against India's great traditions. Building such temples is not what our culture teaches us.”

He later took to Twitter to reinforce the message, and urged people to invest time and money into more ‘worthy causes’. Tweeting on Thursday he added: “Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it (building the temple) not to do it.” Hundreds of his followers had donated funds to help with the construction costs of the project who now plan to replace the statue with the idol of a Hindu god, whilst others remain committed to the original plans. Modi, the former leader of the Gujarat state, is not the first person to have a temple built in his honour with a number of politicians and celebrities in the past also being singled out by worshippers. Temples have already

been built in memory of former prime minister, Indira Gandhi, and former film star, now politician, Rama Rao. India’s current leader also already has a temple dedicated to him in Northern India where a priest from the Kaushambi district placed a statue of the nowPrime Minister next to a statue of Hindu god Shiva last year to pray for his victory in the elections. LEADER: Modi is not the first person to have a temple built in his honour with past politicians, celebrities and even cricketers receiving similar treatment

speaks with Asian Express Britain’s most loved student on life after Thornhill

Last year millions of people were glued to their television screens as Thornhill Academy’s Musharaf Asghar overcome his stammer on Channel 4’s hit documentary, Educating Yorkshire. His touching story helped earn the programme a number of awards over the past 12 months, with Musharaf, or ‘Mushy’ as he is well known, even having his own spin off programme ‘Stammer School’ following its success.

Sanj C and Taz kickstart the wedding season with a dancefloor smasher!

and girl whose registry marriage has taken place, but because of tradition the girl’s side say no contact should take place between the couple until the Indian wedding! Obviously this only results in the groom wanting to see his bride even more, especially to sort out their honeymoon! The video concept matches the song entirely with a lot of humour and fabulous honeymoon destinations! It’s colourful, fun and entertaining and teamed with a contagious beat, this track is going to be on repeat – so get ready to hit the dance floors. ‘Honeymoon’ releases on Thursday 26th February 2015.

Now, the nation’s favourite student may have left the nation’s favourite academy yet with regular contact with former staff, and A-levels to study for, ‘Educating Mushy’ is still very much his life. Speaking to the Asian Express about his new life as a local celebrity, Mushy said it has been an ‘honour’ to be involved in the show and hopes his personal story will help other people with stammers gain more confidence.

Q) What have you been up to since the end of Educating Yorkshire? A) I have actually been busy with a lot of college work and trying to set up a YouTube channel which will hopefully happen this year. I've got a lot going on. Q) How has your life changed since the Educating Yorkshire series? A) It's been amazing. From all the interviews and award shows. I'm absolutely honoured that I've been given this chance. Q) The moment you spoke with music playing, what was that like? A) It was quite emotional. Knowing that I knew the people sitting in front of me for five years and I hadn't really been able to speak to them was quite hard. Finally speaking in front of them was just a once in a life time experience. To see it on TV was quite weird. You never really imagine looking at yourself on TV. It was nice knowing the fact that there was something on TV which I could really relate to. Q) Do you keep in touch with the teachers at Thornhill? A) I definitely do. I try my best to keep in touch with all of them

Honeymoon A perfect blend of Bollywood and bhangra, with the magic of Sanj C and Taz of Stereo Nation has resulted in what will be one of the desi dance floor tracks this year. Intended to kick-start the wedding season with a jiggle and a wiggle with loads of style, ‘Honeymoon’ is the second single from South London producer Sanj C who’s been working with fusion maestro Taz to liven up the party! Sanj C had the beat ready and all it needed was the lyrics from Taz to come together and produce the magic of Honeymoon. The fun and entertaining track tells the story of a boy

including the one of a kind Mr Burton. Q) Did you ever imagine the series would be so popular and win the awards it has? A) Not even a chance. As I've mentioned I’ve been honoured to not only be on TV but to see the show was a massive success. I can't thank the people in this nation enough for having so much love for me. I can't thank them enough for how much they have given me. Q) Have you received any messages from people with similar stammers who saw your experience on television? A) Yes, I speak to quite a few people who have stammers and they have really thanked me for the confidence boost I have given them. Q) How did ‘Stammer School’ come about? A) Stammer School actually came about after Educating Yorkshire was a success. There would be no Stammer School without the love Educating Yorkshire got. Many people were messaging and emailing TwoFour (the production team of EY) that they wanted to know what happened next. If I had really overcame my stammer. I still remember getting a call from Saskia Smith (the producer of EY) telling me that they wanted to make a new documentary only about Stammering and how it affects people in their daily lives. I was shocked but so pleased at how much positive reaction we got. Q) What was it like filming another documentary? A) This was absolutely perfect despite the fact I was fasting for nine or more hours due to Ramadan whilst filming the show. It’s shocking yet pleasing to see how many people stammer. I loved every part of it and wish I could relive it all over again. Q) What do you hope to do in the future? A) Right now I'm at college, I hope to study further and go to university. I'm also as I said before building a YouTube career.

Luxury carmaker says that work is underway to produce an all-terrain high-bodied vehicle (don’t let them catch you saying SUV), which will cost around £200,000.

Rolls Royce plans to launch high four-wheel drive vehicle by 2018… but don’t call it a SUV!

By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

It seems that Rolls Royce is joining rivals Bentley and Jaguar in catering to demand for upmarket 4x4 models. The 111-year-old marque, owned by German car firm BMW, said customers had asked it to add the as-yet

unnamed vehicle to its existing saloon models – the Phantom, Ghost and Wraith. But without mentioning SUV, 4x4 or other names normally used for off-road vehicles, Rolls-Royce’s bosses said in an open letter that they would “produce a high-bodied car that could cross any terrain”.

Luxury 4x4 Rolls Royce plans to launch high four-wheel drive vehicle by 2018… but don’t call it a SUV!

Continued from page 81

Rolls Royce chairman, Peter Schwarzenbauer and chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a joint statement that the new car was not a radical departure for the venerable brand and that the move reflected Rolls-Royce’s rugged roots. “Rolls-Royces conveyed pioneers and adventurers like Lawrence of Arabia across the vastness of

unexplored deserts and over mountain ranges. In other parts of the world including Australia, India and the Americas, Rolls-Royces carried their owners over challenging terrain with absolute reliability and comfort. Rest assured, we are creating a motor car in the greatest traditions of our marque.” A spokesman said: “The words sport and utility don’t feature in the RollsRoyce lexicon and that was why it was important not to say those words and nor will we ever.” At least three years of planning by the Rolls-Royce’s team have resulted in a design for the car, which will hit forecourts in 2017 or 2018. The company has been wary of undermining its brand but has seen competitors such as Porsche, Bentley and Jaguar go ahead with plans for their own models. An industry analyst said that global sales of premium and luxury SUVs has risen from around 397,000 in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2014 and is forecasted to rise to more than 1.3 million by 2020.

END OF AN ERA

Bugatti to take its 450th and final Veyron to Geneva Motor Show

At last Bugatti has managed to shift the last few remaining €1million Veyrons, and will celebrate this achievement by bringing the 450th and final model to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, Bugatti president Wolfgang

Durheimer revealed the final car will be built this year, but that we shouldn’t expect to see the Veyron’s successor anytime soon. To “make the best even better” does not happen overnight, especially as the new model “must do everything better than its predecessor." Thankfully, Bugatti buyers are a

patient bunch. "Many of our customers are art collectors, and they know that it takes time to create a work of art." Tipped to be called the Bugatti Chiron, the new model will be lighter, more responsive, and better-handling than the Veyron. It’ll be built on an existing carbon fiber architecture, but

92 percent of the parts will be all-new or heavily modified. The Veyron’s 8.0-liter, quadturbocharged W16 will carry over with output boosted from 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower, which will be done via direct fuel injection and electric turbochargers. These will provide fast-acting

torque, likely to peak around 1,000 lb-ft, sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Bugatti expects a top speed of around 288 mph with this setup. While we await that car with eager anticipation we look forward to bidding farewell to one of the cars of our generation in Geneva.

New ‘Progression’ and ‘Junior’ models added to Alfa Romeo MiTo range Building on the comprehensive revisions made to the Alfa Romeo MiTo in 2014, the new MiTo “Progression” makes the dream of owning a new Alfa Romeo more attainable while the sporty new “Junior” recalls the legacy of the 1966 Alfa Romeo GT 1300. It may be the new entry point into the Alfa Romeo range, but the MiTo Progression comes equipped with the high levels of features expected of a premium hatchback including air conditioning; a leather steering wheel and gear shifter and Alfa Romeo’s Uconnect™ five-inch colour touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth®; voice recognition; USB / auxiliary inputs and steering wheel remote controls. In terms of safety, the MiTo Progression is equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (stability, braking and traction control with hill-holder), TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) and seven airbags, while its undeniable visual appeal is further enhanced with 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and titanium grey headlight and rear light surrounds. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression is offered with a choice of engines including the insurance-friendly 78hp 1.4-litre engine, which is reintroduced with Start&Stop and EU6 certification resulting in an official combined fuel economy figure of 50.4

MPG and CO2 emissions of 130g/km. The official 0-60 MPH for the 1.4 78hp engine is 13.0 seconds and its top speed is 103 MPH. The awardwinning 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (67.3 MPG / 99g/km) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbodiesel (80.7 MPG / 90g/km) engines

are also available with the Progression trim level, priced from £13,770 OTR and £14,315 OTR respectively. The new Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior aims to broaden the appeal of the MiTo range still further by offering stylish but attention-grabbing looks

within an affordable and insurable package. It builds on the high specification of the MiTo Progression but adds 17-inch alloy wheels with a brilliant white finish as well as matching door mirror caps and distinctive new “Junior” boot decal, also finished in white.

Other enhancements include front fog lights; a sports rear bumper and satin-effect door handles with matching headlamp and tail-lamp surrounds, while the interior benefits from special Junior upholstery, Junior floor mats and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel with contrasting stitching. Under the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior is powered by the 0.9litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (0-60MPH in 11.4 seconds / 114 MPH) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (0-60MPH in 12.9 seconds / 108 MPH) and is priced from £14,870 OTR and £15,415 OTR respectively. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior was inspired by the stunning Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior from 1966 which combined the gorgeous looks of the Giugiaro-styled 105/115 Series coupe with a small-capacity version of the legendary all-alloy Alfa Romeo TwinCam engine. Developed with Italian taxation in mind (which penalised larger engines), the Junior GT 1300 amassed 91,000 sales (accounting for 69 percent of all 105/115 Series built) and has become very collectable in its own right thanks to its purity and character, as well as the larger number of enthusiasts whose earliest Alfa Romeo memories are of that very car.

Tee Hee! It’s the ticklish Toyota It gives you mirth not miles per gallon and its emissions are guffaws, chortles and sniggers rather than exhaust gases. Welcome to the world’s first ticklish car, courtesy of Toyota and Mr Tickle. This giggling Yaris really does react when you tickle its tender spots and it’s ready to hit the road on a mission to raise laughs and lots of cash for Red Nose Day. As an official Red Nose Day partner, Toyota has turned from hybrid power to hilarity to engineer this strictly oneoff model. Red Nose Day legend Lenny Henry has shared his own distinctive laugh with the car as part of its repertoire of hysteria and hilarity. The ha-ha-hatchback will be officially unveiled by the Mr Men’s own Mr Tickle, Toyota’s celebrity consultant on the project, on 16 February. This will mark the start of a busy schedule of appearances for the car around the country at Red Nose Day fund-raising events for Comic Relief, including the Danceathon taking place at Wembley Arena on 8th March. An initial list of appearance venues and dates is provided below. What’s as much fun as the Toyota itself is the story behind its creation, captured in a fly-on-the-wall documentary to be released on the same day the car makes its debut. If Land Rover has just revealed the first glimpse of the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque, previewing a striking new headlamp signature for the most successful Land Rover ever produced. The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will be the first Land Rover to feature full LED adaptive headlamps when it makes its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March 2015. The powerful technology provides superior illumination in dark

you ever thought it was easy being funny, the comic agonies of these corporate comedians will make you think again. The short film will be released through Toyota’s official social media channels. Mr Tickle said: “I was tickled pink to be part of this brilliant idea. And thanks to my long arms and tickly fingers, I was able to help the designers add tickle-points to all those hard-to-reach

places. “I hope the Toyota and the funny movie will make everyone smile and give what they can to wonderful Red Nose Day.” Matt Harrison, Toyota GB President, said: “Toyota has made millions of cars, but never one like this before. We hope the special Ticklish Toyota will help people have a real hoot raising money for Red Nose Day.”

2016 model Range Rover Evoque previewed conditions, following the curves of the road, and is identifiable by the distinctive headlamp graphic. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and

Chief Creative Officer, said: “Our challenge has been to enhance Evoque without diluting its iconic design. The design refreshments give it an even greater presence on

the road yet retain the emotional appeal that has made it so popular with more than 400,000 consumers around the world.” The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque includes a new engine lineup, new safety and convenience features, and interior enhancements all wrapped in the trademark exterior design. Further details of the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will be released on 23 February 2015.

February 2014 - 3rd Edition

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to

take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the

country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.

Borussia edge pasty Real whilst Jubodhol stay top Borussia Teeth 2-2 Team Real Last season’s top scorer, Hamza Ismail, is off the mark this season after bagging the winner in Borussia Teeth’s latest victory over Team Real. Haseeb Ahmed gave Borussia the lead in the first half before Ismail doubled the total moments later and despite a reply from Real’s Ryan, no comeback was on the cards. It was a close affair from the first kick to the last, with both sides having enough chances to take away all three points. A number of early near misses proved costly for the league debutants who fell behind in the first half when Ahmed got the opener with a fine individual goal. As Real attempted to reorganise, they were caught out once again as talisman, Ismail, found himself unmarked in the opposition area to finish at the front post. His first goal of the season clearly meant a lot to the forward who found the back of the net an incredible 25 times last campaign. Team Real continued to press Teeth back as the game played on, and were rewarded for their efforts when Ryan netted at the close of the first half.

A tight second half saw Borussia adopt a defensive approach as Real pushed forward looking for an equaliser yet as time ran out on the clock, there proved to be no way through a resilient back line. The victors were perhaps the

weaker side in the second half yet held on for all three points and a victory which could prove vital as the season progresses. MOTM - Haseeb Ahmed (Borussia Teeth)

Al-Aqs 1-0 JackHammer FC

JackHammer FC’s first game in the SLUK Division One ended in a spirited defeat as they went down 1-0 at the hands of Al-Aqs. Aminul scores the only goal as Al-Aqs beat JackHammer FC 1-0 Al-Aqs were the better team early on with Aminul Hoque getting the only goal early on. Aminul also had the chance to get his second after somehow wiggling his way through a few players but his shot was just wide of the goal. New Boys Jackhammer FC hit the post on a few occasions and had some good spell of possession at times but just wasn't their day. Man of the Match – Aminul Hoque (Al Aqs)

Hyde Park 0-0 Tetley’s Tino

Reigning champions Hyde Park are still struggling to get of the mark this campaign as they drew 0-0 with Tetley's Tino, in a game they were moments away from losing. Last season’s top scorers made it back-to-back goalless draws and only avoided defeat after a late penalty save. The first half was an even contest, with Tino’s looking motivated following last week’s 4-0 triumph over Super Six. However, it was late in the second half that the game really began to live up to its potential. First, Tino’s keeper, Ziad, made a fine double save to deny Kadeem McFarlane and then Tyler Bussue, before the penalty incident came with just seconds left in the game. Bussue stumbled into his own area to give away the spot kick yet heroics from shot-stopper Akiab, ensured the game remained goalless. MOTM - Ziad Hussain GK (Tetley’s Tino)

Old Bacca Boys 1-0 NewBees

TEAM OF THE WEEK: NFA

PLAYER OF THE WEEK NFA skipper Rippon Ali picked up the Player of the Week title as he helped guide last season’s runnerups to their first victory of the season. Defeating Half a Dozen Cousins, 3-0, the playmaker was back to his best and will hope to see his team push on following the three points.

One goal was enough for Old Bacca Boys to record their first win of the season as they defeated the NewBees by goal to nil. Safraz Akhtar struck in the first half to cap his debut with a goal and guide OBB to all three points. Meanwhile, NewBees are still looking for their first goal this term after registering another blank yet looked promising elsewhere on the field with fine build-up play and neat passing. Safraz’s strike may have sent the opponents down to eighth spot, yet with more firepower, the league’s new boys should start picking up points in the coming weeks. MOTM - Safraz Aktar (Old Bacca Boys)

The British and European boxing champion Tyson Fury who has had 17 knockouts from his 23 wins is hoping to secure another win against the German based Romanian Christian Hammer this Saturday (28th February 2015). Hammer is a 27 year old who has remained unbeaten since 2010 and has previously defeated Brazilian heavyweight prospect Irineu Beato Costa Jnr. Fury who defeated Derek Chisora with relative ease in his last fight that earned him the number one position to challenge the King of the heavyweights and reigning world champion Wladimir Klitschko admits that this is a make or break fight for him. Hammer is a former WBO European Champion who has 10 knockouts out of 17 wins and has promised to cause an upset and defeat Fury to earn a world title shot himself against Klitschko. Fury knows that a defeat against Hammer will force him out of world title contention and dream fights against the top heavyweight boxers including the newly crowned WBC American heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will be jeopardised. The Fury vs Hammer fight is appropriately labelled as “Risky Business.” However

Fury has made his intentions clear about facing Hammer and said “I could have taken an easy job at the O2 arena to keep my position safe for my world title fight against Klitschko, but that's not what Tyson Fury is about or what the public want to see from someone who has promised from day one to win the world heavyweight title." “I’ve had a great camp, training has gone very well and because of that I don’t see this fight going beyond five rounds. I want the knockout and that’s what I’m out to get on February 28,” Hammer who seems to be on a winning streak says that he has studied his opponent (Fury) since they were both Amateur boxers so knows what to expect against his opponent. Hammer has trained very hard for this fight and managed to get himself in the best shape of his life. Hammer believes that Fury is a perfect fight for him and said “Fury is a worthy adversary, but he will have no answer when I turn myself into a 10-foot tall hammer and pummel him into the ground.” In my opinion I see this fight being “Hammer Time” for Fury and I expect both Fury and Hammer to stand in the middle of the ring and continuously throw big shots in hope of an early knockout. The end result of this fight will be a knockout win for Fury. Hammer on the other hand tends to fight better against bigger, taller, men like Fury so this could be an intriguing fight. I am also impressed with Fury’s fitness and conditioning these last couple of years and whereas previously he has entered the boxing ring looking overweight and clumsy, I have now seen a more focused and determined man who looks “fast and furious.” We wish Fury the selfproclaimed “gypsy warrior” the best of luck with this fight.

England off the mark Ali stars with the bat in victory over Scotland

It may not be the most impressive victory on paper, yet England’s 119run victory over Scotland last weekend could be just the result needed to kick-start their World Cup campaign. Coming into the match off the back of two heavy defeats at the hands of cohosts Australia and New Zealand, the three lions had to be on top of their game against a Scottish side determined to register their first upset of the tournament. Moeen Ali starred with the bat to score 128 runs, and helped forge an opening partnership with Ian Bell of 172 before the stuttering batsman was finally dismissed for 54. Ali continued the charge and reached his century after 91 balls, before he was finally dismissed when he lofted Majid Haq to young Freddie

Coleman. The 27-year-old’s dismissal signalled a mini-collapse for England with only Eoin Morgan reaching a score of over 25 to secure the side a final score of 303-8 after 50 overs. Meanwhile, in reply, Scotland’s former skipper, Kyle Coetzer, was once again trying to lead his side from the front, reaching his fifty from 64 balls. The England bowlers were struggling against the former Northampton batsman yet were finding joy at the other end of the wicket, dismissing Calum Macleod, Coleman and Machan for single figures. It was talisman Ali, who had earlier starred with the bat, that finally bowled out Coetzer on 73, when his delivery was caught by Chris Woakes. Only three other Scotland players reached double figures in their innings with Steven Finn claiming best figures of 26-3 from his nine overs. Scotland captain Preston Mommsen, said his side fancied their chances in Christchurch after winning the toss yet accepted the ‘quality’ in the opposition’s squad was too good on the day. England’s next fixture will see them face-off against Sri Lanka on Sunday 1st March, with a win set to propel them up the table and leave them looking good for a quarter-final spot next month.

Boxing show is ‘one to remember’

HEAVY-HITTER: Dhameen Rasheed lands a big hit on Christian Radcliffe during his majority decision victory

It was a day of boxing to remember last week for the Dewsbury-based gym, KBW Combat and Fitness, as their boxers made it a clean sweep to register an impressive eight wins from eight bouts. Competitors from across

Yorkshire arrived at the Town Hall to take part in the sell-out show which saw hundreds of spectators turn out to watch some of the sport’s rising talents. Since affiliating with the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABA) two years ago, the KBW team have helped train hundreds of boxers, with more than 25 currently in active competition. Last weekend, a total of 13 bouts took place during the show which also marked the return of several local boxers. Kasim Hussain, Dhameen

Rasheed and Harvey Muir, made their comebacks to the ring after lengthy lay-offs and showed they hadn’t lost the winning touch. Hussain had been out-ofaction for six months through injury and boxed cleverly to register a majority decision over Bracebridge ABC’s Jack Thompson. Likewise Rasheed, who last stepped foot in the ring on 1st December 2012, made it a return to remember to claim a TKO triumph over Christian Radcliffe, showing his Prince Naseem antics in the ring to the applause of the crowd. Perhaps most impressive of all returns on the night

was that of Harvey Muir who had to withstand a four-year lay-off before he was able to compete on Saturday against Tameside Elite ABC’s Bobby Gilder. The match-up went all the way to the final bell, and with three rounds of intensive boxing under the belt, Muir was thrilled to see his name read out as victor. Other winners on the night for KBW included: Michael River Brooke, Moqeet Rehman, Callum Grace, Josh Wisher and Kevin Pratt. Trophies from the contests were presented by Labour PPC Paula Sheriff and Olympic hopeful, Jack Bateson.

Yorkshire sign up Khan Experienced batsman returns to Headingley Back page story continued He continued: “We have been looking for a world-class batsman to strengthen our batting department at the start of the season. Younus fits the bill and will add real quality to our top-order. “It also helps that he understands the culture of the club and what it means to play for Yorkshire. That was a major factor in signing him. “We are well aware of his qualities and we hope his vast experience will enable us to continue our efforts from last year and give us a great opportunity to get off to a winning start in the Championship campaign.” Moxon also confirmed that Khan’s role is likely to only be temporary, until Aaron Finch returns from the Indian Premier League, mirroring last year’s setup. “He will be with us for the first part of the season and we will then replace him with Finch, another proven international player, once Aaron’s Indian Premier League commitments come to an end,” he added. Currently competing with the Pakistan national side in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Khan made a positive impact during his first spell with Yorkshire, as he became the club’s

first overseas star from Pakistan. When representing his country at Test level, he has played in 96 matches in a 14-year career where he averages over 53 with the bat from 172 innings. Notable highlights also include his captaining of the national side to the world Twenty20 title in 2009, whilst his international career high score stands at 313 against Sri Lanka. Speaking about his return to the county club later this year, Khan said: “It is a great honour to be returning to Headingley and playing for Yorkshire. This is one of the finest cricket clubs in the world. “Yorkshire are going well and deserved to win the title last year.

I hope my experiences in the Firstclass game will help them maintain their position at the top of the County Championship. The County Championship is regarded as one of the best domestic competitions in the world and to test myself in English conditions can only enhance my game. “I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates and also reuniting myself with Dizzy (Jason Gillespie), who I played alongside in 2007. He is a great coach and I can’t wait to work with him. “For the Yorkshire supporters, I am eager to replicate the form I showed the last time I was involved and build on the Club’s superb form over the past couple of seasons.”
