A group of six Iranians have been sentenced to six months in prison and 91 lashes after dancing and singing in a video on the internet. The group, featuring three men and three women, were dancing to Pharrell William’s hit song ‘Happy’ – mimicking the dances in the official music video. Re-enacting the famous video, the group uploaded their clip to YouTube in May this year and quickly brought in more than 150,000 views from around the world. However, as well as a number of admirers, the group’s actions were also seen by Iranian authorities who arrested the six

Dancers and lip-syncers face cruel punishments individuals and the producer that same month. The arrests drew condemnation from Pharrell himself alongside his fans through social media, as well as indirect criticism from moderate President Hassan Rouhani. “The way to deal with cultural issues is cultural work, not policemen and (detention) vans and strong-arm tactics,” the president told a gathering of conservative clerics in the religious city of Mashhad earlier this month. Nonetheless, the six defendants were forced to apologise for their actions, deemed to have been contravening Iran’s strict vulgarity laws, which prohibits public displays of dancing in the country. The Islamic Republic labelled the film a ‘vulgar clip which hurt public chastity’. The women appearing in the video were also condemned for appearing bare headed, a direct

violation of the Islamic dress code enforced after the 1979 Islamic revolution. All six were paraded on state television where they were made to express remorse for their actions, before sentencing was handed out. The six individuals seen dancing and singing were each given a six-month suspended sentence and 91 lashes whilst the director received a one-year suspended sentence and 91 lashes. “A suspended sentence becomes null and void after a certain period of time,” their lawyer, Farshid Rofougaran, told Iran Wire. “When it’s a suspended sentence, the verdict is not carried out, but if during this period a similar offense is committed, then the accused is subject to legal punishment and the suspended sentence will then be carried out as well.”

IS Police force

Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's northwest Nineveh province have created a police force to ‘implement the orders of the religious judiciary’, according to a well-known militant Islamist website. Photos on the website showed armed men in black clothing with ‘Islamic Police Nineveh State’ printed on the arm. The police forces were in freshly painted police cars and one photo showed militiamen on a river boat. It was not clear when the photos were posted or when the police force was established. The text on the website said the force would ‘maintain order and arrest culprits and the corrupt’. It continued by saying it would be different from police forces in other states, which it described as ‘a tool to suppress dissent’. However, residents in Nineveh told Reuters the police's main duty appears to be to detain people they consider opposed to their cause. The police have set up checkpoints on roads and conducted house raids, the residents said. One photo showed a blindfolded man being escorted into a prison.

The names ‘Xi’ not ‘eleven’

An Indian TV news anchor has been sacked after she referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as ‘Eleven’ Jinping, apparently confusing Xi's name with the Roman numerals XI, a senior official at the state television channel said on Friday. Xi left India on Friday after a visit to boost trade and economic ties that have been marred by a long-standing border dispute. The blooper occurred on a show on Doordarshan news on Wednesday. “It is an unpardonable mistake,” the official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, saying the anchor was employed on a casual basis. “We have debarred her from news reading for a few months.” The official said a shortage of news readers had forced the channel to run some news bulletins with casuals. The incident comes at a time when Doordarshan news is trying to reinvent itself to compete with private broadcasters. Its programmes are often a matter of public ridicule for their poor production quality.

Lufthansa pilots threatened further strike action on Tuesday as they began a 15 hour walkout at Frankfurt airport in a row with management over retirement benefits that stretches back two years. The pilots, represented by union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), were striking from 7am to 10pm on long-haul routes from Frankfurt, Europe's third-largest airport and Lufthansa's main hub. The strike, affecting around 9,000 travellers, is the longest since a three-day nationwide walkout in April, and the union threatened more. Three strikes since the end of August have targeted specific operations such as those at Munich or Frankfurt and budget unit Germanwings and have lasted around six to eight hours. “We're not on the same level for talks,” VC board member Markus Wahl told Reuters on Tuesday. “If Lufthansa doesn't make a move, then further strikes will happen.”

Cover story continued Five days before Begg was due to go on trial, prosecutors announced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday that they had “recently become aware of relevant material” which obliged them to offer no evidence. The judge entered a formal verdict of not guilty on Wednesday 1st October and ordered that Begg be set free immediately from Belmarsh high security prison. Police sources said the decision was taken following the receipt of this intelligence material two months ago. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that had this information come to light at the time of charging, he would not have been detained in the first place. On being questioned by the press, the Home Office has said it was ‘inappropriate’ to comment on whether the information had been handed over by MI5. It said that the decision to halt the prosecution had been taken by the police and CPS directly.

Terror charges dropped after harrowing seven month prison ordeal for ex Guantanamo Bay prisoner

Arrested

Guantanamo Bay

Mr Begg, a British citizen of Pakistani origin had moved to Afghanistan with his family in 2001, before moving again to Pakistan in 2002 when the Afghanistan war started. He was arrested in Islamabad in January 2002 and taken to Bagram internment centre in Afghanistan for about a year before being transferred to the US-run military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for nearly three years. During his detention he was interrogated by British as well as US intelligence officers. He was released in January 2005 with three other British citizens and returned to the UK.

Human rights

Begg from Hall Green in Birmingham, has spent more than seven months in custody after being arrested on 25th February this year. More than 200 people had protested outside the headquarters of West Midlands Police in Birmingham about the charging of Begg following his arrest. He was questioned over a trip he had made to Syria from 9th October 2012 and 9th April 2013. The 46-year-old has always maintained that he is innocent. Begg had appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court and denied all the charges of providing terrorist training and funding terrorism overseas. He was facing seven charges of possessing a document for the purposes of terrorism funding and training, and attending a terrorism training camp. He denied all the charges.

'Funding terrorism'

Begg had not hidden that he had made a trip to Syria, and had written about his experiences in an online post. He was taken aback by his arrest, protesting that he had not been engaged in any kind of terrorism. Five charges were related to the possession of ‘an article’ for a purpose connected to terrorism between 31th December 2012 and 26th February 2014. Those counts related to electronic documents found on a laptop computer in his possession. He also denied attending a terrorist training camp, ‘knowing or believing instruction or training was provided there for the purposes of terrorism,’ between

9th October 2012 and 9th April 2013. He was also charged with funding terrorism by making available a Honda generator between 14th July and 26th July 2013. Begg had sat throughout the hearing at the time and said "not guilty" as each of the charges was read out. He has never previously been charged with an offence.

Seven terror-related charges against Moazzam Begg has been dropped by the CPS

Working with the London-based rights group Cage, Begg is a prominent campaigner on behalf of terrorism suspects who were being denied basic legal rights. He has always maintained that he was only involved in charity work and has never been involved in any kind of terrorist activity. Asim Qureshi, Cage’s research director, has said on the collapse of Begg’s prosecution that criminalisation of virtually any Muslim that has been to Syria has increased in intensity, while Cage has been attacked from every angle by a host of government agencies. He added that he hopes that Moazzam’s release is a sign that the government are now willing to adopt a more measured strategy in relation to anti-terrorism policy and avoid the attempt to criminalise all dissent and crush any organisation like Cage that stands up for the rule of law and justice. Last week two brothers from Yorkshire, Muhammed Saeed Ahmed, 21, and Muhammed Naeem Ahmed, 20, accused of plotting to attend a terrorism training camp in north Wales were formally acquitted at the Old Bailey after the CPS decided against proceeding with a retrial against them. A jury had earlier been unable to reach verdicts. They were given suspended sentences on lesser charges under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act of possessing a record of information likely to be of use to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Tory backer heads to UKIP

A businessman who has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party said on Wednesday he was switching his support to the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). The decision by Arron Banks, announced hours before Cameron delivers his last major conference speech to his party before a May 2015 national election, was designed to embarrass the British leader and persuade other Conservatives to follow suit. “I've supported the Conservatives for a number of years but have come to the realisation that only UKIP supports my views,” Banks said in a statement released by UKIP. “Being a member of the EU is like having a first class ticket on the Titanic,” he added, referring to the doomed ocean liner. “Economically, remaining in the EU is unsustainable.”

Plea for husband’s safety

The wife of a British aid worker being held by Islamic State insurgents made a renewed appeal for his release on Tuesday, a week after receiving an audio message from her husband. Alan Henning, 47, was part of an aid convoy taking medical supplies to a hospital in northwest Syria in December last year when it was stopped by gunmen and he was abducted. He appeared in a video released by IS earlier this month, which showed the murder of another Briton, David Haines. In it, a masked man said Henning would also be killed if British Prime Minister David Cameron kept supporting the fight against IS. Last week Britain's parliament approved air strikes against IS insurgents in Iraq. “We are at a loss why those leading Islamic State cannot open their hearts and minds to the truth about Alan's humanitarian motives for going to Syria,” Barbara Henning said in a televised statement.

Slavery stats rise

The number of people locked in slavery in Britain rose by 22 per cent last year, with online dating, social media sites and Internet job advertisements used increasingly to recruit victims, a new report showed on Tuesday. Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) identified 2,744 people, including 602 children, as potential victims of human trafficking in 2013 with more than 40 per cent ending up in the sex trade and almost 30 per cent forced into manual labour. The third annual human trafficking report listed Romania as the most prevalent country of origin for victims for the third consecutive year, with more than half exploited for sex, and Poland as the most common country for labour trafficking. Although the number of victims of slavery in Britain is hard to pin down, studies have shown there has been an increase in human trafficking in recent years, prompting the government to prepare a bill to more effectively tackle slavery offences.

Schizophrenic Brit needs ‘security’ PRISON: Mohammed Asghar was found guilty of blasphemy in January yet it is claimed the court did not take into account his mental illness

Shot pensioner to be sent back to prison By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The family of an Edinburgh man, shot in a Pakistani prison earlier this year, say their relative needs more protection after it was reported he is set to return to prison. 70-year-old Mohammed Asghar was sentenced to death in January after being found guilty of blasphemy. The Brit, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, had written a number of letters to people claiming that he was the prophet Mohammed and was apparently shot in the back and injured by a prison guard last week.

His long standing health problems have resulted in the legal action charity, Reprieve, calling for action to be taken to ensure Asghar is sent to a secure medical facility for treatment. Spokeswoman Maya Foa said to move Mr Asghar to a prison now would be to ‘effectively hand out a second death sentence’. “The British Government simply cannot allow this to happen,” she said. “They must ensure that he is held in a secure medical facility where he can receive the treatment he so desperately needs, both for his recent injuries and his existing mental illness.”

Family solicitor, Aamer Anwar, also urged First Minister Alex Salmond, and Prime Minister David Cameron to intervene and ensure his client is transferred back to the UK. Mr Anwar said: “The Asghar family is horrified to learn that their father is being threatened with being returned to prison. “The Pakistani authorities are unable to guarantee Mr Asghar's security and we have insisted that he be moved to a secure military medical facility where he can continue to be treated in safety. “The repeated failure of David

Cameron to intervene is a green light for the Pakistani authorities to continue punishing Mr Asghar. When will somebody in power act to save his life?” Asghar was initially arrested in 2010 in Rawalpindi after being accused of blasphemy by a tenant. It is alleged that his schizophrenia was not taken into account by authorities when he was charged with the offence earlier this year, and has since only been medicated with basic antidepressants since his imprisonment.

Daughter’s ‘Breaking Bad’ poison plot

A woman from East London has admitted she thought about killing her mother after spiking her diet coke in a murder plot inspired by the television show, Breaking Bad. 37-year-old Kuntal Patel has been appearing at Southwark Crown Court throughout the past month charged with putting the deadly poison, abrin, in her mother, Meena’s drink. After finding a partner on an Asian dating website, Patel says she fell in love for the first time and had planned to marry the man. However, the Barclays employee was forced to call off the wedding due to her mother’s constant disproval of the relationship and subsequently said she ‘hit rock bottom’. This caused Patel to allegedly consider suicide as well as killing her 60-year-old mother. Admitting to the thoughts, Patel told jurors at Southwark Crown Court: “I was having thoughts about killing myself, and I have to tell you that I also had thoughts, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this, about killing my mother. “I know it’s a terrible thing and I feel ashamed for having those thoughts. I was in a really bad mental state of mind. I couldn’t cope. “I was researching these websites constantly to the point where I became obsessed with doing research on it. It was all I thought about.” The two family members lived

Attempted murder charge for wannabe ‘Walter White’ together in their home in Plaistow, East London with another sister of Patel’s. After failing to ever find a boyfriend, Kuntal Patel said she felt like an ‘overweight buffalo’ and was unhappy with her looks. This made her turn her attention to an Asian dating website where she found a partner, Niraj Kakad, from Arizona, US, and the couple planned to wed. However, her mother, Meena Patel, a magistrate who sits on the bench at Thames Magistrates'

Court, did not condone of the relationship. She is alleged to have called Kakad a ‘fat, black b*****d’ and her daughter a ‘f****d-up-brain girl who can’t be my blood’ for falling for him. The mother then began beating her daughter, the court heard, before Patel purchased the abrin online. Peter Rowlands, defending, asked Patel how she would have felt if she had killed her mother.

MOTIVATION: The ‘poison plot’ was inspired by the actions of Walter White, from the television series Breaking Bad, who kills individuals with the poison abrin

She replied: “I would be lost and I would be devastated and, to be honest, I probably would have ended up killing myself too. It was just thoughts I was having in my head.” Denying any charge of attempted murder, Patel said she bought the substance after becoming addicted to the American television series, Breaking Bad. In one episode, a character is killed with the poison ricin, which is a weaker substance than abrin. Patel denies trying to murder her mother but has pleaded guilty to attempting to acquire a biological agent or toxin last December. The trial continues.

COMMUNITY: Dozens of people turned out for the colourful event as part of the Navratri celebrations

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The ten-day, nine-night celebration of Navratri finally arrived at the end of last month centred on the worship of the Hindu deity, Durga. A time which is celebrated by those of the Hindu faith, the festivities often revolve around highspirited activities including prayer, music and dancing amongst men and women. In Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, the Indian community came together earlier this week to use the festival as a way of giving something back to the those most in need. Bunty and Sagar Shah established the ‘Potters Bar Indians Facebook page’ a long time ago and most recently launched a similar page entitled, Navratri Food Bank Collection. With the target of raising awareness of the local Potters Bar Foodbank, the pair hosted a special dance event, called a ‘Garba’. In total, the organisers’ efforts resulted in more than 100kg of goods donated to the collection, something Mr Shah says is a fantastic

achievement. Speaking to the Potters Bar Edition, he said: “Speaking on behalf of the Navratri Food Bank Collection, I am really pleased that a small Asian community in Potters Bar has managed to raise so much awareness of its local foodbank. “This in turn has inspired other Asian communities across the UK to hold foodbank collections. “The collection was set up earlier this year by myself and Sagar Shah. The sole purpose of our idea was to raise awareness of foodbanks during the Hindu festival Navratri. “It was amazing to see a very small Asian community in Potters Bar supporting the idea and collecting donations for their local foodbank.” He added: “I am pleased the small group known as ‘Potters Bar Indians’ will continue to support their local community foodbank by volunteering their time to help out at the foodbank in the very near future.” Hertsmere councillor Abhishek Sachdev, was also full of praise for the group’s work. “The sole purpose of the idea was to raise awareness of foodbanks during the Hindu festival Navratri,” he said. “I am pleased that a local event in Potters Bar, with the help of the Navratri Food Bank Collection initiative, has raised so much awareness of our local Potters Bar foodbank. “I’m sure other Hindu communities across the UK will take inspiration from this event and embrace the NFBC initiative in their nine nights of festivities. Over 100kg of food was raised. “I am pleased that more than 250 Hindus attended the Garba, and brought together different parts of Potters Bar, and neighbouring areas of Brookmans Park, Cuffley and Barnet.”

Secret Service recruits dyslexic spies

Britain's main surveillance agency is employing over 100 people afflicted with dyslexia and dyspraxia as spies in the country's fight against terror. The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), uses the ability of these ‘neuro-diverse’ spies to analyse complex information in a ‘dispassionate, logical and analytical’ way to combat threats. “Neuro-diverse individuals will be able to bring additional value to the full spectrum of roles and jobs across the department,” an official said. While dyslexics find it pretty difficult to read, write or interpret different words, they often have an extraordinary aptitude for deciphering facts from patterns or events. A famous person with the condition was Alan Turing, who during the Nazi onslaught in the WWII helped Britain break the enemy's top-secret code. Asian

Bollywood filming in Bradford By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford’s reputation as a Bollywood hub in England was reaffirmed earlier this week as scenes for a Bollywood production were shot in the city. ‘Welcome to Karachi’ features the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Jacky Bhagnani as two lost Indians, stuck in the dangerous city of Karachi. With political turmoil rife in the city, the duo have to fend for themselves with no money, no passports, no means of communication, and perhaps most importantly, no way of getting home. Warsi plays an incident-prone character whose mishaps often see the pair fall into tricky circumstances, bound to amuse audiences everywhere. Director, Ashish R Mohan, who worked as assistant director on the ‘Golmaal’ series of films as well as directing ‘Khiladi 786’, will be leading the production from behind the lens. Speaking to the Asian Express, Mohan said England had already proven to be a fantastic choice to shoot parts of the film. Explaining why he chose the country, he said: “I have actors from America, from India, from Pakistan and this is the only place

FILM: Pakistani actor, Ayub Khoso, was on set in Bradford

with the landscape and lighting I wanted. “I think England is the only place I can find all of the things I need under one roof. So far it has all been very good. “It is the first time I have done anything in London and the people out here in Bradford that I’m working with have been amazing; I’m certainly learning a lot.” As well as having a comical aspect to the film, Mohan added that there was also a much more

serious message he wanted to portray to audiences that ‘good human beings are everywhere’. “The movie is about two people who get stuck in Karachi, with the city being known as one of the most deadly places in the world,” he said. “There are obviously some funny incidents that happen along the way yet there is also a strong political satire throughout. “How the world is behaving at this point in time, humans don’t seem to matter to those in charge

and despite Karachi being labelled as one of the most dangerous cities; the people are still the same. “They have nothing to do with politics, killing people, being dangerous, it is just a perception that has been given to them. This film will show that good human beings are everywhere.” The film is being shot in the UK until the end of October at which point scenes will be taken into post-production in India before the rest of the movie is captured in India, Karachi and Thailand.

GROWING: Karan Singh is more than two feet taller than many of his friends and his rapid growth is showing no signs of slowing down

AsianExpress.co.uk

September/October 2014

Meet the world’s tallest five-year-old When your mother is 7ft 3in and your father stands in at 6ft 7in, you are always likely to inherit the tall gene and for one young boy in India, that possibility has become a very real reality. Karan Singh may only be fiveyears-old yet he is already nearly the same height as the average UK male, measuring up to 5ft 7in in total. His extraordinary growth sees him tower above classmates and friends, and with no signs of slowing down, looks set to chase down his parents’ heights by his teens. According to the youngster’s father, Sanjay, Karan was born weighing a huge 15.4lb and measured over two feet, initially worrying the parents that their child may suffer from health

Five-and-a-half feet after one year at school complications. However, as the 35-year-old explained, the doctors soon put any worries to rest. He said: “When he was born, he was unusually tall and heavy. We thought that he might be suffering from some kind of medical condition. But the doctors said he was healthy and fine. “The height and weight even shocked some doctors. Then Guinness recognised Karan as the heaviest and the tallest baby born.” So how is Karan so tall at such a young age? The answer seems to

lie in his genes. His mother, 26-year-old Shweatlana, was once considered the tallest woman in India and despite her age, is still growing. At such a height, Shweatlana has managed to make a career for herself playing basketball at a competitive level, even representing the nation in the past, as well as coaching the sport in local schools. With concerns around her continuous growth often worrying the mother, she says at least she is confident her son will grow up healthy.

White Widow working with IS?

“I gain around 1.5 inches of height every couple of years. This is due to excess growth hormone,” she said. “I sometimes fear that this might even have consequences for Karan. But I know he is doing fine and he will grow up to be a nice and healthy person." She added that it has often been hard to raise such a tall child but as Karan continues to grow, the task has become somewhat easier. “It is always tough,” she said. “The hardest part is finding the clothes that fit him. “When he was baby, kid’s stores would never have his size of diapers. Thank God, we are beyond that stage. “Now, I just buy him adult size garments. They fit him perfectly well.”

WANTED: Samantha Lewthwaite is wanted by authorities from several countries for plotting bomb attacks in Kenya

British militant could be behind beheading attacks One of the world’s most wanted women is believed to be working alongside the Islamic State, sources have claimed, helping militants with their propaganda campaign. Samantha Lewthwaite, originally from Banbridge, was the wife of infamous 7/7 bomber Jermaine Lindsay, and has reportedly been working with the Islamist militant group since earlier this year. Nicknamed the ‘White Widow’, she is believed to have become one of the most influential female members of the group and one of the person’s responsible for the beheading videos of Steven Sotloff, James Foley and David Haines. According to the Daily Star, intelligence sources have claimed that Lewthwaite has

Her role, as well as leading on propaganda, is believed to also involve training and mentoring British and other white converts to Islam who have volunteered to fight alongside the Islamic State. “We have some very interesting signals intelligence which refers to a white British woman who holds a senior position in Islamic State,” one source told The Daily Star. “There has been mention of a woman joining IS after being married to a jihadi fighter who became a martyr, and there have been references to attacks in Africa. “That narrows down the list of suspects. Rubina Khan, 46, and her son Amaar, 10, were both pronounced dead at Slough Station in Berkshire on 24th September, with Ms Khan reportedly depressed following the death of her partner. The pair had been hit by the 8.41am Bedwyn to London Paddington commuter service. A statement from the family issued through British Transport Police said the loss of the mother and son would have a big impact on the family’s life. “Rubina was a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister who will be sorely missed by all who knew her,” it read. “Amaar was a cute, gorgeous little boy, with a lovely cheeky side, and we will

Stripped of British Citizenship Scotland Yard Chief says tougher sanctions may be needed for British extremists

Britain’s most senior police officer has backed growing calls to see British extremists, who travel abroad to fight, stripped of their passports. Police Crime Metropolitan Commissioner, Sir Bernard HoganHowe, said it should be seen as a ‘privilege’ to live in this country and by going to war zones as aspiring terrorists, that privilege should be removed. Currently, it is estimated that between 500 and 600 Britons are fighting in Syria, with roughly three quarters of them from the capital. Sir Bernard said earlier this month that Scotland yard is prepared should a large number of them return at the same time, and even called for the

return of control orders. Such a move would see terror suspects forced to move to a different part of the country where they could then be place under a lengthy curfew as they are investigated. The control orders were replaced in Britain by less restrictive Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, for suspects who can neither be deported nor charged. Speaking on LBC Radio, Sir Bernard said: “It seems to me it’s a privilege to have a passport and be a citizen of this country, and if you’re going to start fighting in another country on behalf of another state, or against another state, it seems to me that you’ve made a choice

about where you want to be. “[The control orders] were stopped because the threat was reduced and quite properly they were seen as too intrusive. “But I think these things have got to be considered when the drum beat changes, and it's clear that the drum beat has changed.” Earlier this month, London Mayor, Boris Johnson, said he would back a law which saw those who ‘continue to give allegiance to a terrorist state’ lose their British citizenship. He also said that those who travel to war areas, without alerting local authorities, should be presumed to be doing so for terrorism reasons.

Get ready Malaysia – here comes the British curry!

ALL SPICED UP: Honourable Dato' Haji Abdul Malik Kassim - the Malaysian State Minister for Religious Affairs and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs signed off the deal with festival founder Zulfi Karim

Having just celebrated its fifth anniversary, the World Curry Festival has just signed a deal to be taking the event to Malaysia – its first destination outside Yorkshire. The Honourable Dato' Haji Abdul Malik Kassim, the Malaysian State Minister for Religious Affairs and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs arrived in Yorkshire this week to sign an agreement with the founder of the World Curry Festival, Zulfi Karim. The Minister originally met Mr Karim earlier this year, when they got together to discuss the idea of promoting Malaysian food. He was blown away by the World Curry Festival concept, and flew back to the UK this week to do the deal. Bradford has been the UK curry capital for four-years running and therefore is befitting that the festival, which operates out of the heart of the city, from the Grade II listed Drummond Mills complex, will be taking British curry to Malaysia. The festival will be hosted in the state of Penang, on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang, which is often referred to as the "The Pearl of the Orient", is widely regarded as the food capital of Malaysia. Local businesses and students from Bradford will be travelling to Malaysia to participate in the festival

between 30th January and 1st February 2015. It is a fantastic opportunity for Bradford and Yorkshire alike to showcase its talent to rest of the world. Commenting on the announcement, Zulfi Karim, Founder of the World Curry Festival, said: "It is an honour to be invited by the Malaysian State Minister to take the World Curry Festival to its first international destination. “Going global has been part of the plan for a few years now, but we were waiting for the right opportunity, and we feel that this is the one we have been waiting for. “The food created in the Yorkshire region is fantastic; it has been inspired by recipes and cultures from both eastern and western hemispheres. “We hope our new relationship with Malaysia will facilitate further investment into our region from businesses based in Malaysia, and allow us to promote Yorkshire brands in the Far East. “We also hope to take British curry to Malaysia, while learning from their expertise." The Minister also added: “We are delighted to confirm that Penang will be hosting the World Curry Festival 2015, as part of 6th Penang International Halal Expo & Conference, which will be held from 30th January to 1st February 2015. “Penang is Malaysia’s city of gastronomy and is known as the Pearl of the Orient. The Penang state government looks forward to welcoming chefs and visitors to the festival in Malaysia.”

Agenda Unprecedented visits The unannounced visits by Ofsted at the Birmingham-based school placed it under immense pressure earlier this year and at a time when students were preparing to take their GCSE and A Level exams. Mr Anwar, who has previously been through numerous Ofsted inspections, was sceptical from the onset of the ones that took place at this establishment. With four inspections taking place in a duration of just three weeks, Mr Anwar states that an investigation such as this one was unprecedented. “I’ve worked in various schools for over 12 years whose intake has been mixed,” he says. “This school was in Alum Rock, making it pre-dominantly Muslim. It was disturbingly clear that they weren’t here to look at our teaching and learning. There was definitely an agenda sensed”. “Ofsted said they would be back later but came back sooner than expected, unannounced. They checked rooms, books and attended our meetings. There was no official report released about findings which led media to comment on matters which had not been verified,” said a concerned Mr. Anwar

‘Trojan Hoax’ Birmingham teacher speaks out about school’s extremism probe A teacher from one of the schools that was under the spotlight during the ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation has broken his silence. Speaking exclusively to the Asian Express, Inam Anwar, who has worked at a school for over five years as a Head of department, was shocked to hear

Unusual Line of questioning Mr Anwar was stunned to see what Ofsted was asking children at the school raising serious concerns on the impartiality of the visit. “Safeguarding, achievement, leadership which is what Ofsted usually come to inspect wasn’t even discussed. Instead there was a fixation on discussions with staff and students about homosexuality.” highlights Mr Anwar. “They asked students ‘Are you forced to hijab?’, ‘Do you (girls) feel hot in the long skirt?’, ‘What would you do if your teacher was homophobic?’. The questions posed were very leading. We felt we were being targeted,” argues Mr. Anwar

Pressure on Students With a media circus carrying on outside the school premises, students in particular have had to

that his school was being investigated for extremism. Mr Anwar, a senior member of staff at the school which received an outstanding mark last year by Ofsted, says he believes it was all a ‘pre-meditated’ plan to publically undermine the school, its students and its staff.

deal with the difficulties of being under the spotlight. “Pupils felt their religion, identity was being targeted and the line of questioning made them feel uncomfortable. “This was the worst time they could have chosen as it was exam time for students. This has affected their mental and emotional state and probably has left an impact on their futures in more ways than we can imagine,” he says.

Defining ‘Extremism’ Education Secretary at the time Michael Gove brought in former counter-terrorism police chief, Peter Clarke, a man with no known expertise in education to investigate. Like many political campaigners, Mr Anwar has had reservations with how buzzwords like ‘extremism’ have been and continue to be thrown about as a wide net to ‘catch out’ something. “There’s a lot of subjectivity with the Government definition of extremism. Anybody who speaks out against injustice is considered extreme. Define extremism?” argues Mr. Anwar. “There has been no explanation from Michael Gove or Sir Michael Wilshaw (Chief Inspector of Schools In England and head of Ofsted since January 2012). “The current Ofsted report mentions nothing about extremism. All it said was that the school doesn’t prepare children well to tackle issues of extremism. Does that make the school unsatisfactory?”

Character assassination The entire saga has also led the senior teacher to be maligned in national press. A mainstream newspaper, which described Inam Anwar as “a heavily bearded” and “deeply religious person” says he’s responsible for “brainwashing” children at the school. Journalists managed to access his Facebook profile and quote his Status Updates. “It was deeply unsettling to see how a daily national newspaper reported and undermined my name. Since when was it a crime to quote the Quran and to speak for justice and equality?” questions Mr. Anwar.

India’s 100 richest now all billionaires

India's 100 richest people are for the first time all billionaires, according to an annual Forbes survey released Thursday, nearly double the number from five years ago. The country's top earners were also worth a third more combined than last year as Indian stock markets went on a roll with the election of the new right-wing government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Industrialist Mukesh Ambani topped the list for an eighth straight year with his $23.6-billion fortune, Forbes India said on its website. The wealth of Ambani, chairman of conglomerate Reliance Industries, climbed by $2.6 billion from last year. The combined worth of the 100 richest Indians now totals $346 billion, Forbes said, an increase of a third on 2013 fuelled by stock prices up nearly 30 percent since January. The figures come amid disquiet in India about a yawning divide between the elite and burgeoning middle classes and hundreds of

millions still living in deep poverty. While India's mega-rich host multi-million-dollar weddings for their children, host lavish parties, fly private jets and have armies of servants, the poor often toil in the shadows of mansions and office skyscrapers, scavenging and living in disease-infested slums with no sanitation. The minimum sum to qualify for the Forbes list was $1 billion for the first time, up from $635 billion in 2013. India's 100 billionaires this year is nearly double the 52 in recorded in 2009 but the number is still lower than rival emerging market giant China's 152 billionaires, according to a Forbes list released in March. Indian pharmaceutical magnate Dilip Shanghvi, whose wealth grew by $4.1 billion to $18 billion, is the new number two on the list, displacing London-based steel baron Lakshmi Mittal. The Indianborn magnate slipped to fifth place at $15.8 billion. Shanghvi's wealth surged after his Sun Pharmaceuticals bought

rival generic giant Ranbaxy Laboratories (BSE: RANBAXY.BO news) from Japan's Daiichi Sankyo for $4 billion in April, Forbes said.

The pharmaceutical sector is one of India's biggest wealth generators, with over a fifth of the 100 richest holding assets in the drugs and health care sectors, Forbes said. Moving up to third place was Azim Premji, chief of outsourcing giant Wipro (BSE: WIPRO.BO news) , whose fortune climbed by $4.1 billion to $18 billion. - 'Gloom to boom' The rise in India's share prices has vastly outpaced economy expansion running at under six percent, well below near doubledigit levels of a few years ago. India's mood has "moved very quickly from gloom to boom" under the new government which took office in May, said Naazneen Karmali, India editor of Forbes Asia. "The new federal government's mandate for change has sparked euphoria in the stock market, causing a seismic shift in Indian wealth this year," Karmali added. Tycoon Vijay Mallya, known as the "King of Good Times", fell off India's most wealthy list, engulfed by massive debts of his grounded

carrier Kingfisher Airlines, named after his beer brand. The flamboyant Mallya has been declared a "wilful defaulter" by creditors -- someone who is able but unwilling to pay. Mallya, who owes over $1 billion to a consortium of state-run banks, is chairman of United Spirits, controlled by global liquor giant Diageo (LSE: DGE.L news) . Mallya was in 84th spot with $800 million on the wealth-tracking list last year. The Indian businessman who made the biggest jump was ports magnate Gautam Adani, who hails from Gujarat, the same state as Modi, and who is seen as close to the Indian leader. Adani leapt 11 spots in the wealth stakes to number 11 as shares of his companies climbed around election time. India's richest are still significantly worse off than the world's wealthiest man, Microsoft (NasdaqGS: MSFT news) co-founder Bill Gates, who is worth an estimated $76 billion.

Men detained in £100 million cocaine smuggling inquiry AsianExpress.co.uk

September/October 2014

Detectives have seized a motor boat in north Wales suspected of being involved in a botched £100 million transatlantic cocaine smuggling plot. The 25ft Sea Breeze was to be used by an accomplice to ferry bales of the massive narcotics haul from the Makayabella yacht onto UK shores, an evasion tactic known as coopering, it is believed. Three men - a 70-year-old skipper and two others, aged 35 and 28 from West Yorkshire - are being held in Ireland after being found onboard the 60ft Makayabella when armed navy teams stormed it 200 nautical miles off the Irish coast early on Tuesday morning. Two others, aged 43 and 47, were arrested in follow-up raids in West Yorkshire on suspicion of involvement. Some 41 bales of cocaine, bound for the north of England, were offloaded from the vessel in Cork harbour yesterday. Detectives from the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) today recovered the motor boat Sea Breeze at a marina at Pwllheli, a small coastal town on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd. It is now being forensically examined.

Commander David Norris, of the NCA, who is leading the investigation, said they have been granted more time to question the 47-year-old suspect still in custody in the UK. "This has been a complex and fastmoving investigation, involving law enforcement agencies in the UK, Ireland, Europe and South America," he added. "Our inquiries are continuing, and we still wish to speak to one other individual in connection with this, a 29-year-old man from the Halton Moor area of Leeds. "I would urge him to contact us."

A man who raped a 71-year-old woman in her Solihull home has been jailed for more than ten years after being caught by his DNA. Irshad Hussain was arrested just five days after the attack when forensic evidence at the scene matched his DNA, which had been recorded on the national database following a theft in 2003. The victim was at home on 28th October 2012 when Hussain knocked on her door and forced his way into her address. He then subjected her to a terrifying ordeal, pushing her upstairs where he conducted the assault. Police were called the following day and forensic examinations at the house found Hussain’s semen on the victim’s bed. A sample was sent off to the DNA database on 1st November and the next

police but seconds later clipped a kerb and smashed into a car parked on a driveway. “The parked car suffered extensive damage and was also shunted backwards into the property, demolishing much of the porch area. It’s fortunate that the driver escaped largely unhurt and that no-one at the address was injured.”

Counter-terror police have made more arrests during a motorway swoop as part of an investigation into alleged support of banned extremist group alMuhajiroun. Two men, aged 33 and 42, were stopped and detained near junction 1 of the M6, just outside Rugby in Warwickshire, in the early hours, Scotland Yard said. A total of 11 men have now been arrested under the probe, including radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who was one of nine held across London yesterday. In the most recent arrests, the 33-yearold was detained on suspicion of being a member of, or supporting, a banned organisation, and of encouraging terrorism, while the second man, 42, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both are being held in custody at a police station in central London. The arrests come as MPs prepare to vote on whether to join air strikes in Iraq. Lawyer-turned-preacher Choudary was detained shortly after firing off a series of anti-Western messages at 5am on socialnetworking site Twitter, including claims that the definition of terrorism is ''more suitable for the US/UK policy in Muslim lands''. Sweet shop Yummy Yummy, owned by Choudary's brother Yadzani, in Whitechapel, east London, was one of 18 properties searched across the capital, while another address in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was also raided. Searches are continuing. Earlier this week, it was reported that Choudary said he has no sympathy for Alan Henning, a volunteer aid worker who was captured in Syria by Islamic State militants.

day, a match was made with Hussain, who was then arrested on suspicion of rape. During his trial, Hussain claimed he was innocent, making out the victim was keen on him and the sex was consensual. “In reality, nothing could be further from the truth,” said Detective Chief Inspector Dean Young from the force’s Public Protection Unit, “From his work in the area as a traffic warden, he became aware of the woman and her vulnerabilities. “He then preyed on her and seized his opportunity to take advantage of her, abusing his position of trust in the

community.” A jury at Birmingham Crown Court believed the victim’s account and found Hussain, aged 30 of Flavells Lane, South Yardley, guilty following a four-day trial. On Friday 25th September, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison, whilst Judge Paul Farrer also ordered Hussain to be placed on the sex offender’s register for life and the subject of licence conditions on release. Detective Chief Inspector Young added: “We are satisfied with the sentence handed to Hussain, which reflects the serious nature of this offence.

“The victim has understandably been affected a great deal by what has happened. Her health has now deteriorated and she has lost her independence, becoming more reliant on family members as a result. “I would like to commend the victim and her family for the dignity and bravery they have shown throughout the trial. I hope the sentence provides some reassurance for them and gives other victims of sexual violence the confidence to come forward and report matters to us. “While we are confident our inquiries would have led us to Hussain, the speed at which we were able to take him off the streets and prevent him from targeting other vulnerable people, was only possible with the help of DNA profiling.”

‘Bendgate’

Bending and software concerns raised for the iPhone 6 A customer holds an iPhone 6 (R) and iPhone 6 Plus after the phones went on sale at the Fifth Avenue Apple store in Manhattan, New York September 19, 2014. Apple Inc broke its silence on consumer complaints about bending iPhones, hours after withdrawing a glitch-ridden software update as the company struggles to restore momentum to the rollout of its latest phones. "With normal use, a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in an email. Apple shares closed down nearly 4 percent at $97.87 on

Thursday, wiping out nearly $23 billion in market value. The new phones face criticism over their bendability, dubbed "bendgate". Social media and online forums have been abuzz with comments about how the new phones can bend when placed in back pockets or while wearing skinny jeans. Apple said its iPhones feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high-stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. The only way an iPhone may have bent is if someone put it in their back pocket and sat on the phone for a very long time, said Laban Roomes, chief executive of Goldgenie, which customizes

and gold plates iPhones. Apple was also forced to withdraw a faulty update to its latest operating system after some users of its new phones complained of call service disruptions. "We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users," Muller said. Apple said on its website it was working on an iOS update to fix the issue, and will release it in the next few days. Apple said on Monday it had shipped 10 million units of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Users of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also complained about the inability to use the fingerprint-reading Touch ID after updating to iOS 8.0.1. Some users had complained of "sluggish Wi-Fi and dwindling battery life" after moving to iOS 8. On Thursday, Apple issued a step-by-step guide for users to reinstall iOS 8, launched last week, through the latest version of iTunes. The health app will not work for now and will be fixed in the next software update, the company said.

The Saudi government has ploughed billions of pounds into the redevelopment of Mecca, with the aim bettering facilities to accomodate the annual influx of at least 15 million pilgrims, increasing by seven per cent a year. A British newspaper this week was being applauded for ‘breaking’ a story, which was headlined “Saudis risk new Muslim division with proposal to move Mohamed’s tomb”. The article published by ‘The Independent’, talked about fears of segregation across the Muslim world if Prophet Muhammed’s (pbuh) tomb, which is housed under the Green Dome at the al-Masjid al-Nabawi mosque, was to be destroyed. It suggested that the Prophet’s body would then be relocated to an anonymous grave in the nearby alBaqi cemetery. The Independent is claiming the story as an exclusive, and many have credited the paper as breaking the story. Now, Mowafaq al-Nowaysar - the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Saudi Arabian ‘Makkah’ newspaper has slammed the newspaper accusing ‘The Independent’ of ‘theft’, claiming they have ‘robbed’ one of their journalists of his story. Furthermore, al-Nowaysar says that ‘The Independent’ ‘fell in the trap of misunderstandings’ after it ‘mistranslated’ the Arabic article that was posted on 25th August. Speaking to Al Arabiya News, Omar alMudhwahi, the Saudi journalist who wrote the ‘Makkah’ article said: “If they insist on stealing my work, at least they

should allow me to provide them with an accurate translation… I would be glad to.” It transpires that the ‘61-page document’ submitted to the Saudi government by an Islamic academic was in fact a post-doctoral paper compiled by Dr. Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Shabal submitted to the committee of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques. It had been completed for a Saudi Arabian university in order for him to reach the level of adjunct professor. Although ‘The Independent’ newspaper mentions that there has been no sign that any decision has been taken to act upon the so-called ‘plans’ to relocate the Prophet’s grave, it’s clear that the article focuses of sectarian divide fears if such an event was to take place. Asian Express contacted ‘The Independent’ Deputy Managing Editor Will Gore who maintains that the article wasn’t ‘stolen’, as al-Nowaysar has alleged. Mr Gore said: “We made it quite clear there is no suggestion that any decision has been taken to act on the proposals. “Nonetheless, the paper puts forward some controversial ideas that have inevitably raised concern, especially in the context of previous development in Mecca and Medina. We felt it was important to report on this.” Al Arabiya has obtained a comment from The General Presidency of the Two Holy mosques, which has denied reports of plans to destroy the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed in Madinah. Saudi government sources have confirmed that the issue is nothing more than a ‘proposal by an academic which was published in a specialised magazine and is not a government decision’.

Since moving to Sheffield from Pakistan in 2009, the volunteer has been working with youths, aged between seven and 15-year-old, as well as adults. Record number of anti-Semitic crimes 51%* of reported crimes committed by South Asians

STATS: Spokesman for the Community Security Trust, Mark Gardner, says there are growing fears among the Jewish community that acts of violent anti-Semitism suffered by French Jews may yet be repeated in the UK

Statistics handed to the Asian Express this past week have revealed that anti-Semitic crimes in the UK reached a record level in July 2014, with a large proportion of the crimes committed by people from the South Asian community. Figures released by the Community Security Trust (CST) show a shocking 400 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, as which there were 302 separate incidents. This figure is also just two fewer than the first six months of 2014 in which 304 incidents were reported. CST officials have drawn a direct correlation between attacks on Britain’s Jewish population and the events in Hamas and Israel - of the 302 crimes, 155 had direct reference to the ongoing conflict which began in July. CST obtained a description of the offender for 107 of the total incidents recorded. Of these, 55 offenders, 51 per cent, were

described as being of south Asian appearance; 32 offenders, 31 per cent, were described as white; 15, 14 per cent, were described as being of Arab or north African appearance; and five, five per cent, were described as black. Representing just over seven per cent of the country’s full population, the statistics show a worrying overrepresentation for south Asians. CST spokesman Mark Gardner said the statistics ‘speak for themselves’ and that his organisation would continue to work with authorities to combat the problem. He said: “It helps to explain the pressures felt by so many British Jews this summer, with its combination of anti-Jewish hatred and anti-Israel hatred. “The high proportion of offenders who appear to come from sections of the Muslim community is of significant concern, raising fears that the kind of violent anti-Semitism suffered by French Jews in recent years may yet be repeated here in the UK. “CST will continue working with Police and Government against anti-Semitism, but we need the support of others. Opposing antiSemitism takes actions not words. “It is particularly damaging for public figures, be they politicians, journalists or faith leaders, to feed these hatreds by comparing Israel to Nazi Germany or by encouraging extreme forms of public protest and intimidation.” The worst offending area was Greater London with 179 antiSemitic incidents, whilst more locally, Bradford only had two reports. *51% - incidents where a description of the offender was available.

Muslims gather in Paris to denounce Islamic State ‘barbarism’

Emergency landing

A Boeing Dreamliner flying from Chicago to Poland with 248 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Scotland's Glasgow airport on Friday after crew received an alert from the fire protection system in the baggage hold. The Polish state airline LOT plane was cleared as safe and the passengers allowed to disembark, an airport spokesman said. More checks on the fire alarm were being carried out. “We are aware of the LOT diversion of a 787 into Glasgow,” a Boeing spokesman said in statement emailed to Reuters. “We are working with our customer to assess the situation. At this time we have no further details.” Any findings of technical fault would add to the problems experienced by the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing's estimated $32 billion bet on new technology, which entered commercial service three years ago. Last year, the global fleet was grounded for three months from January to April after two lithium-ion batteries burned out in two incidents in Japan and the United States. Emergency services met the LOT plane, which had been heading for Warsaw, at 9:35am, Glasgow airport said. Other traffic at the airport was not affected.

Spicy Goodwill Ambassador

The United Nations program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) on Thursday named fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham a goodwill ambassador. Beckham, who said she was inspired to help after a ‘life-changing’ visit to HIV clinics in South Africa, will focus on working toward ensuring that all children are born free from HIV and that children and women who are living with and affected by HIV have access to medicines and care, UNAIDS said. “It's taken me getting to 40 years old to realize I have a responsibility as a woman, as a mother, I have a voice that people will listen to,” she told a news conference at the United Nations on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. “I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know everything right now, I don't, I'm learning,” said Beckham, adding that she planned to take field trips to learn more about the problem and how she could help. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region hardest hit by HIV, with 24.7 million HIV-positive people in 2013. Women account for 58 percent of those with HIV in the region, which is also home to 85 percent of pregnant women with HIV, according to UNAIDS.

September/October 2014 Hundreds of people gathered in Paris on Friday 26th September answering a call by Muslim leaders to denounce the "barbarism" of Islamic State militants, as flags across France flew at half-mast after the beheading of a French national. Imams and ordinary Muslims have rallied to condemn the execution of 55-year-old mountaineer Herve Gourdel this week by militants in Algeria with ties to the IS jihadists, as the country mourns the brutal murder. "This gathering is the strong and vibrant expression of our desire for national unity and of our unwavering will to live together," Dalil Boubakeur, head of the French Council of the Muslim Faith - an official representative for the country's roughly five million Muslims - told the gathering outside Paris's main mosque. "Islam is a religion of peace", he said, adding it "orders respect for life". Leading Muslim figures also signed a message published in French newspapers Friday condemning "atrocities committed in the name of a murderous ideology hiding behind the Islamic religion". "We are also the 'filthy French'," said the statement, referring to an epithet the Islamic State group has used.

The demonstration came as flags nationwide flew at half-mast to mourn Gourdel. The mountaineer was kidnapped on Sunday by Algerian group Jund alKhilifa shortly after a chilling call by IS militants for Muslims to kill citizens from countries involved in a US-led coalition fighting the extremists, "especially the spiteful and filthy French". The threat sparked concern in France, and authorities have since strengthened security in public places and on transport. The foreign ministry also widened its vigilance alert for nationals abroad from around 30 countries earlier this week to some 40 nations -- including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. France has nevertheless said it refuses to be cowed by IS threats. The government announced Thursday air strikes had been carried out in Iraq - the second bombing raids in the space of a week. Fighter planes destroyed four hangars near Fallujah city, west of Baghdad, that "likely" contained weapons and other equipment, a military source said. Paris opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq but was one of the first to sign up for an active role in the US-led campaign against the IS group. It has six Rafale fighter jets based

in the United Arab Emirates, carrying out the strikes in Iraq. While it has pledged to push forward with the air strikes, Paris has stressed it will not deploy ground troops, nor will it expand operations to Syria, as the United States has done. But the presidency announced France would "continue and intensify its support for Syrian opposition forces who are fighting jihadist groups". Back in the southern Alpine village of Saint-Martin-Vesubie, where Gourdel worked as a mountain guide, locals, school students and other guides marched Thursday evening in memory of a man they described as hugely curious about the world. More than 800 people, including three imams, took part in the march past his office, stopping at times to light candles or lay flowers down. "Herve was a humanist full of an overwhelming passion for the mountain that illuminated his life," fellow guides said in a joint statement. The mountaineer was kidnapped while hiking in a national park in eastern Algeria that was once a magnet for tourists but later became a sanctuary for Islamists. A passionate photographer, Gourdel liked going off the beaten track, his friends have said.

50,000 children set to benefit in child maintenance shake-up By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Single and separated parents who have previously received no maintenance from their former partner could start receiving payments for the first time, as reform of the child maintenance system starts to affect existing cases. As many as 50,000 children may be newly eligible for maintenance, the Government has estimated, as a three-year process of closing all existing Child Support Agency cases gets under way. Under sweeping reforms of the child maintenance system, the CSA has already stopped taking on new cases, with newlyseparated parents encouraged to make their own family-based arrangements or use the new Child Maintenance Service instead. Now, in the next phase of the changes, the agency is beginning the process of closing its 800,000strong historic caseload. Initially, the DWP is writing to around 150,000 parents with details of when their case is due to close and advice about the next steps they should take. Although there is no need for anyone to act until they receive a letter, once parents receive notification of their closure date they are urged to consider their options. The case closure programme is beginning with so-called “nilassessed” cases – those in which, because of the circumstances of

Because of this, some parents may feel there is no point in responding to the letter they receive. But because the parents’ circumstances may have changed since the initial assessment was made – plus the new statutory child maintenance system is much more robust, using data from the

Choudary arrested

ARREST: Anjem Choudary was arrested on Thursday morning in relation to charges of encouraging terrorism

Nine detained by counter-terrorism police Radical preacher, Anjem Choudary, was one of several men detained by police in the early hours of Thursday morning, as part of an ongoing investigation into terrorism. All nine men were seized from different addresses in London, on suspicion of being a member of, or supporting, a banned organisation in the UK, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said. Choudary has long been a controversial preacher, stating that the UK will ‘integrate into Sharia one day’ and labelling UK troops as ‘cowards engaged in state terrorism’. The 47-yearold has also publically said the UK should have legislation which would see: ‘People who commit adultery would be stoned to death’, ‘Anyone who becomes intoxicated would be given 40 lashes in public’ and ‘Every woman, Muslim or nonMuslim, would have to wear a burka and cover all but their

Traditional Asian gift-giving practices examined

RESEARCH: Dr Amna Khan - a senior lecturer at MMU’s Business School has led on the study

The South Asian British Muslim community is being invited to share its stories to help influence new ways of building links between ethnic minority groups. A Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) team is exploring the inter-generational differences of British Muslims with a Pakistani, Indian or Bengali background through traditional giftgiving practices. Researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the differences through the years to provide insights into whether any changes in cultural traditions and behaviour are taking place. Results from the project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, could then help develop community engagement strategies through greater understanding of ethnic minority groups. Lead researcher Dr Amna Khan, senior lecturer at MMU’s Business School, said: “Many

people in the community felt that post-9/11, Muslims had received a lot of negative publicity. “There was limited information which acknowledged the contribution they made to communities and society in general. So a project, which explored how they gave gifts to people within their community and outside their community, was developed. “Britain is a multicultural society with many different ethnic groups and cultures. To make a society work together it is important to understand the diverse cultures and behaviours. “This study is important as it gives insights how communities can work together through the act of gift giving.” The team will conduct 90 oral interviews in community centres around the North West and build links with residents. They are also appealing for more members of the South Asian British Muslim community to be interviewed. The interviews will be stored in the North West Sound Archive. Transcripts and some copies will be housed in Manchester’s Central Library. The story-book will be displayed in the community centres involved in the project.

Bradford, Birmingham & Glasgow Britain’s most dangerous cities

Of Britain's ten most populous cities Bradford is seen as the most dangerous – and Edinburgh is thought of as the safest. New YouGov research asks British people how safe or unsafe they think Britain’s ten most populous cities are, and in all but two cases they tend to find them safe. Bradford is perhaps best remembered to outsiders for 2001’s race riots, lasting three days and leading to hundreds of arrests. It is the only city mentioned in the poll where more people (42%) say it is unsafe than safe (35%). Britain's second most dangerous city according to the public is Birmingham: people are divided 4141% on its safety. Edinburgh, well known for the world’s largest arts festival, The Fringe, is considered the safest place in Britain, with 68% saying it is safe and only 14% saying it is unsafe. Bristol and Sheffield are also seen as safe by fairly large margins: 5719% and 50-25% respectively.

London is actually considered safe by the majority of British people (53%), and Londoners themselves are particularly assured of its safety (75%). However a significant minority (39%) do see it as unsafe, giving it its ranking at sixth place. In 2012 there were 1.67 homicides per 100,000 people in London, and 2.7 in Glasgow, compared to a UK-wide rate of 1. In 2010, the use of “stop and search” was almost four times higher in Scotland than in

England and Wales. Although Glasgow is notoriously impoverished, and it does not have the same appeal in terms of safety as Edinburgh, contrary to its crime statistics in perception it does not fare the worst. 44% see it as safe compared to 38% who see it as unsafe. In this light British cities look dangerous, but the UK has steadily become more peaceful. UK homicides per 100,000 have fallen from 1.99 in 2003; in Glasgow, homicide rates are down 40%.

Hoax causes a scandal By Anush Ansari info@asianexpress.co.uk

An internet prankster who uploaded a video posing as a Muslim dad from Bradford calling for the ban of the popular cartoon series ‘Peppa Pig’, has resulted in mainstream news headlines and a barrage of abuse directed towards Muslims. The man who called himself ‘Zayn Sheikh’ from Bradford, posted his first video, which has had over 73,000 hits, saying he was horrified to learn that his 6-year-old son was inspired to be a pig after watching the cartoon. The video titled ‘Dangers of Peppa Pig to Muslim Children’, sees him state: “I go downstairs and I see on the tv the haraamist (most unpure) thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It was this abominable creature Peppa Pig.” He rants on about how terribly distraught he is because his youngest child had originally wanted to be a doctor when he grew up, and Zayn suggests a suitable alternative cartoon to be created titled ‘Abdullah the Cat’. He also called for an immediate Facebook campaign called ‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’. And here’s the cue… no such campaign was ever launched. ‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’ does not exist. However, many individuals and mainstream tabloids quickly took to

“Muslims against Peppa Pig” video goes viral and taps into exposing inherent racism in Britain slamming Muslims, with one person saying that they’d “love to see all these f*****g Muslims tortured and fed pork”, many took to referring to Muslims as a culprit breed of groomers and jihadists and what not. Some have launched counter campaigns such as ‘Peppa Pig Against Muslims’. Whilst many people pointed out that it was blatantly obvious that the video was intended as a joke, several major news sources have mistaken Zayn’s piece of satire as a genuine call for the banning of Peppa Pig. One newspaper even published a picture of Zayn’s “supposed” Facebook page depicting the Kaaba along with a “banned” Peppa Pig. In a second video released by Zayn, he exposes his social experiment, and voices how was shocked he was at the number of vehement comments posted against Muslims. Though he says his objective was to expose how deeply racist the

British are towards Muslims, he’s also been criticised for misleading and inciting racism himself. Many have applauded him pointing out how easily people are “fooled” into believing anything they watch or read and don’t spare a second thought for spurring venom. One posted: “Great Initiative. It is an eye-opener about media. ” Zayn, whose real name is still unknown, says: “This video is obviously a parody. I have NOT made the page ‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’ or any other Facebook pages of the sort. “This country’s possible future downfall is one million times more likely be down to the rapid multiplication of the mentally deficient who have failed to spot the satire rather than immigrants who have been unlucky in the accident of birth and have since then decided to move here for better prospects –just like you would in their shoes.”

EU exit not ‘heartbreaking’

Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday it would not break his heart if Britain left the European Union, but said his preference was for his country to stay in a reformed EU after a new settlement with Brussels. Cameron, who has promised to renegotiate Britain's EU membership before offering voters an in-out referendum by 2017, is under pressure from the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) and some of his own lawmakers to toughen his rhetoric on Europe. When asked about a statement he would have been heartbroken to

see Scotland leave the United Kingdom earlier this month, Cameron said: “I feel about a thousand times more strongly about our United Kingdom than I do about the European Union.” When asked by BBC radio whether it would break his heart to see a British EU exit, he added: “The United Kingdom was an issue of heartbreak. “This is a matter of important pragmatism: What is best for our United Kingdom? How do we get the best deal for Britain? That is what I feel strongly about.”

Two conservative town council members in eastern Austria have resigned from their posts and left the People's Party after a documentary film showed them singing and toasting one another in a basement room filled with Nazi memorabilia. The case has prompted extensive media coverage in Austria, which is still coming to terms with its past as part of Nazi Germany after Adolf Hitler, who was born in Austria, annexed the country in 1938. The scene from cult filmmaker Ulrich Seidl's ‘Im Keller’ (In the Basement) shows five men in traditional dress singing a drinking

song in a room featuring a portrait of Hitler, a swastika flag and mannequins wearing Nazi uniforms and helmets. Two of the men from the People's Party - elected to the town council in Marz in the province of Burgenland after the film was made in 2009 - have now resigned from their posts. "We distance ourselves with deepest conviction from any Nazi ideology and atrocities. To prevent further damage to the community and the party, we decided voluntarily, with immediate effect, to withdraw from our council mandate," the two said in a statement on Friday.

Salman Khan's case adjourned

Suman's Calling... London based 'DS', better known to many as 'Suman' has spent a decade behind the scenes in the music industry, gathering ideas and experiences which has inspired her to create her own unique style of music. Her amazing debut, self produced single ‘Calling’ is a juxtaposition of Urban, Bhangra and Hip-Hop with a versatile vocal performance providing the listener with a taste of worldwide cultures mixed with contemporary sounds. After enjoying the huge success of her

recent collaboration with Jazzy B on his worldwide smash 'Feem' and featuring on the brilliant 'We Just Wanna Party' by Dr Zeus & Nyvaan, DS has a number of new projects in the pipeline with other world class artists. From very humble beginnings, multitalented Suman was introduced to music very early by her father 'JP' and brother Pav. She first got involved with the UK music scene at the age of 11 playing keyboards as part of a bhangra band set up by her brother with her dad on lead vocals.

DS then began to experiment with fusing sounds in a very natural organic way creating a unique style that she is now excited to present to the world. Suman says of the release: "This is a pretty exciting time for me to finally show case my production and introduce the Darker Side (DS) of my music." Calling releases Thursday 2nd October 2014 on Premier Records via iTunes and other digital stores. The fantastic accompanying video is out now on YouTube.

The trial in the hitand-run case involving actor Salman Khan some twelve years ago has been deferred again after the court was informed that his lawyer was unwell. On 28th September, 2002, the actor's car had allegedly rammed into a bakery, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping on the pavement outside. The trial, which has dragged along over the years, has seen repeated adjournments and some ‘missing’ documents which have now been traced and submitted in the court. The missing documents, it transpires, had been 63 original witness statements and case diaries, which had been in police custody. However, the documents were eventually found lying at a police station after a police chief had instituted an inquiry into the lapse. So far, 11 witnesses

have deposed in the case. The sessions court had on 5th December last year ordered a fresh trial in the case on the ground that witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This was invoked against the actor by a magisterial court midway through the hearing. The actor has earlier been tried by a magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years, while the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10year sentence. The magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, had ruled that a case of culpable homicide was made out against the actor and referred it to the sessions court. The trial continues on 9th October.

Now we all know how Kareena Kapoor Khan is an ardent traveller with her exploration of many locations, but now with her birthday coming soon, she has decided to “chill out” - quite literally with her hubby. While the actress is currently riding high on the success of ‘Singham Returns’, Saif Ali Khan has been too busy juggling between two films. Kareena recently admitted

September/October 2014

that it's been five months since the two have spent quality time together and they have hence decided to take a break but one away from her favourite destinations of London and New York. On the hunt for an out-ofthis-world experience, Kareena has narrowed down on witnessing the Northern Lights in Iceland this time. Prior to this, a day or two before her film Singham Returns was slated to release

in August, Kareena Kapoor Khan had taken Saif Ali Khan on a vacation to London to welcome his birthday. In fact, the actress had thrown a bash for her hubby and had invited his friends along with his family to celebrate the occasion. Kareena Kapoor Khan however wants to wrap up this holiday by October, since her next film with Salman Khan titled ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is all set to go on floor.

Iceland vacation for “Saifeena” Pakistani actor Sanjay Dutt gets jail inmates to donate one day’s wages to Kashmir Fawad Khan gets Bollywood attention Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has been receiving quite a bit of attention from the Indian audience post the release of his film ‘Khoobsurat’ alongside Sonam Kapoor. Though currently the actor is back home in Pakistan, we hear that he has been signed on by Akshat Verma, who earlier wrote the film Delhi Belly, for his directorial debut. Said to be an intense drama with comic touches, the film will be produced by UTV, which also produced Khoobsurat. Sources close to the production house confirmed that Fawad has been approached for the project, and that talks were being finalised. The untitled project that is yet to lock on the lead actress is expected to go on floors by the end of the year.

With relief efforts and help pouring in for people in the flood-affected areas of Kashmir, Sanjay Dutt too, has initiated a drive among his inmates in Yerwada Jail, in Pune. He managed to convince each of the inmates to donated one day's wages, whatever their capacity. We hear Dutt has proposed to the prison authorities if they could take it ahead and send the collected amount to the Prime Minister's relief fund.

Asha Parekh to get Irrfan Khan not happy Lifetime about British co-star Achievement Award

The very talented Irrfan Khan finds himself embroiled in an unnecessary controversy. Never known to shun from commitments, Irrfan Khan is deeply affronted by producer Vashu Bhagnani's allegations of nonprofessionalism regarding the project Welcome To Karachi. While a whole lot of back-and-forth accusations and counter-accusations were on, no one knows that Irrfan was kept in the dark about the film's British leading lady. Irrfan Khan who has worked with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman was given

the impression that he'd be working with a reputed British actress in ‘Welcome To Karachi’. Instead a nondescript actress was finally signed for the film. Says Irrfan, "I wouldn't have minded working with anyone. But the British actress paired opposite me needed to have great comic timing. I am sorry to say I saw no evidence of this anywhere. “Vashuji didn't even do a proper audition with her. All I saw in the so-called audition was the British girl introducing herself. I am sorry. But that was no proof of her acting capability."

Veteran actress Asha Parekh will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award at the closing ceremony of the fifth edition of the Jagran Film Festival. The actress, who made her debut in 1959 with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, became one of the sought after actresses in the 1960s and 1970s. She has been part of hits like ‘Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai’, ‘Love in Tokyo’, ‘Do Badan’, ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ and ‘Caravan’ just to name a few.

In 1992, she was awarded the Padma Shri. "We are honoured to confer the Lifetime Achievement Award to Asha Parekh. Her films have been loved and celebrated by millions of cinema lovers in India. We are humbled that she has agreed to receive the award," the official spokesperson of the fifth Jagran Film Festival said in a statement.

The family has come together to celebrate and mum (Shabana Azmi) has been working hard to make everything perfect. Nav (Ameet Chana) and Harleen (Goldy Notay) arrive bickering and Sunita (Clara Indrani) is nowhere to be seen. As the curries simmer and rotis are smothered in full-fat butter, years of family drama bubbling under the surface start to boil over. Speaking about the casting, Rifco’s Artistic Director, Pravesh Kumar said: “It’s not often you get the chance to work with one of your idols. “Shabana Azmi is a world-class actress with a unique and rare talent. With the “hauntingly addictive” vocals of Usman Rehman, who up until around two years ago was pretty much unknown, his new single ‘Vakhriyan Raava’ will have you mesmerised. Usmaan’s latest offering is a personally written song about issues that arose in his own life. ‘Vakhriyan Raavan’ is a beautifully melancholic depiction of love, laughter and heartbreak. Usman Rehman commented: “Its

The Bradford-born artist, whose songs have stacked up hundreds of thousands of hits on Youtube, has quickly risen to become one of Britain’s most-loved Asian artists, with his fan bas running into the millions worldwide. Magical music composer A R Rahman is getting ready to go into film production, it seems. Though at the moment he’s not willing to give away too many details about the film that he will produce, he has said that it will be a Hindi production because it's a North Indian storyline. "My first film production is almost in place. This is something I wanted to do for some time now. But my other commitments didn't allow me to," he said. Rahman says he needed to create his own cinema to

accommodate his musical vision. "Every filmmaker comes to me with his own idea and vision.... one happy song, sad song, a dance number.... and so on. My own creative vision gets submerged in the larger picture. “Producing a film will give me the platform I needed for my music. “In fact producing music videos was also a preparation for film production, as they gave me a chance to express my music in the visual terms that I wanted." Rahman singles out Vishal Bhardwaj for making the transition from music to filmmaking. “Vishal is able to express his music in cinema, which is the transition that I am looking at." At the moment, though, Rahman is not looking at film direction. "That vocation needs undivided attention. “Just like I can't do songs for two films at the same time, I can't direct until I stop doing everything else. I am going to get directors who can execute my vision."

Shahid Kapoor wants 'Kaminey 2'

Shahid Kapoor's ‘Haider’ with Vishal Bhardwaj is due to release, but the actor has recently said out loud how he wishes that the filmmaker should make ‘Kaminey 2’ with him. Released in 2009, ‘Kaminey’ starred Shahid in a double role and for which he won accolades for his performance from all quarters. Though its been whispered that if ‘Kaminey 2’ was to happen, Shahid most definitely would be part of the film, it seems apparent that Mr Kapoor is eager to send Vishal Bhardwaj a loud and clear message. "I would be very happy if 'Kaminey 2' happens," said 33-year-old Shahid, speaking to reporters. "I had an amazing experience with Vishal sir working on 'Kaminey' and now 'Haider'. “I just hope he casts me in his next film and I really hope that this “next” film is 'Kaminey 2'," In fact, it seems that Bhardwaj has already locked a story but the story line is strictly under wraps for now. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's play ‘Hamlet’, Indra Kumar's next film ‘Super Nani’, of which the biggest highlight is ‘Haider’ also stars Shraddha the comeback of veteran actress Rekha to the silver screen, has been Kapoor and is set to release gearing up for its release after a fair bit of delay. in the first week of Though the promo of ‘Super Nani’ has been released the major roadblock for October. this Rekha-starrer was that it was scheduled to release at the same time as Shah

Though one can argue that two films can release side by side, the producers of ‘Super Nani’ realise that it was not a sensible plan to clash with SRK's “biggie”, as distributors were finding it difficult to get hold of enough screens for the Rekha-starrer. Now the producer and director have decided to move Super Nani to release on 31st October.

Uncle B’s Serving up more than just fish and chips on Wilmslow Road Whether you are after a traditional tray of fish and chips or fancy a plate of tender steak, there is something for every diner at Manchester’s favourite takeaway. Uncle B’s, on Wilmslow Road, set up seven months ago with the aim of bringing the classic chippy back to dining tables across the city. With succulent pieces of fish, tucked away between a light layer of crispy batter, it is clear to see why the restaurant has quickly gained a reputation as a favourite dining hot spot for food enthusiasts. All ingredients used are halal, to ensure every person, no matter their beliefs, can enjoy some classic British favourites, the way they should taste. From a steak and kidney pie to the new addition of chicken steak and chips, every recipe has been trialled and tested to create a menu full of flavour and full of choice.

The ever expanding menu promises to offer up a different taste sensation every night to those who desire a quick bite on the go, or a sit down meal inside the two-tier, modern restaurant – equipped with its own unique Uncle B’s aquarium wall. Owners, Mohmammed and Irfan Malik, have seen their goal of bringing fish and chips back to

Manchester’s famous ‘Curry Mile’ go far and beyond their expectations and thanked all those customers for their support in the business’ first year. “It has been brilliant since day one,” Mr Malik said. “Our menu has proven really popular with the traditional fish and chips a real favourite amongst diners on

Wilmslow Road. “An area such as this needs good quality meals and that is why we strive to only serve up the finest traditional dishes to our fantastic customers.” The business has continued to grow since setting up and has found its place in the hearts of many as a welcome alternative to one of the neighbouring curry

houses. More than a decade had passed since quality fish and chips were available on Wilmslow Road before Uncle B’s arrived. Yet now, with the restaurant well and truly established in the area, Manchester can rest assured that such a drought will never be seen again.

Seeking Justice A

n important decision of the Supreme Court has opened the door to enable access to justice for religious institutions involved in disputes. The case of Shergill and Others –v- Khaira and others concerned the trusteeship and governance of two Sikh temples (Gurdwaras). Specifically, the power to appoint and remove Trustees of those Gurdwaras and the associated powers of governance conferred by the Constitution of the Charity. The Defendants did not accept that the spiritual leader of their Sikh sect was the acknowledged successor of the previous spiritual leader who had died. The Defendants also disputed the meaning and validity of a deed granting the Third Holy Saint the power to dismiss and appoint trustees. A dispute arose over the validity of the Third Holy Saint’s appointment and his subsequent directions leading to a dispute over the control of the Charity’s assets. The Third Holy Saint was joined by eight other claimants in seeking from the Court declarations and injunctions in order to regain their control and trusteeship over the Gurdwaras from the Defendants. In 2011, the Birmingham High Court dismissed an application by the Defendants to strike out the proceedings on the grounds of non justiciability (the Court’s ability to adjudicate a dispute, namely the Court’s ability to adjudicate on issues of religious doctrine, belief and practice as the Courts in the UK are secular and do not concern themselves with such issues). That decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal who handed down a Judgment to the effect that the Appeal would be allowed and the action be permanently stayed as the proceedings raised non justiciable issues of religious belief, doctrine or practice. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court to consider whether the Court of Appeal were correct in deciding that the action should be stayed. The Supreme Court held that the dispute was justiciable and capable of being

determined by the Court. The Court found that disputes regarding the ownership, possession and control of property held on trust for religious purposes by trustees can be determined even where that requires determination of religious issues provided that those issues are capable of objective assessment and necessary to decide the disputed legal rights. The Court confirmed that the English courts cannot determine disputes about the truth or otherwise of religious beliefs or the validity of rights and rituals where these are not matters of law capable of proof. However, issues concerning civil rights or interests or reviewable questions of public law are capable of being objectively ascertained. In this case, the issue was the interpretation of a trust for religious purposes, which falls within the Court’s jurisdiction and can therefore be determined. The matter will now be remitted back to the High Court for a decision on the substantive claim. Blacks were previously instructed by the Claimants in this matter at the Court of Appeal stage and successfully secured permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

India’s satellite success scrutinised As India celebrated becoming the first nation to send a satellite into orbit around Mars on its first attempt, S.M. Vaidya, head of business at conglomerate Godrej's aerospace division that made the spacecraft's engine and thruster components, sounded surprisingly downbeat. Mission control in the southern Indian city of Bangalore received confirmation of satellite Mangalyaan’s success on entering the orbit of the red planet at 7.41am Wednesday, local time. Vaidya said that the mission was, indeed, a major achievement, and one of which the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) should be proud, but adds that a single trip to Mars is not enough to sustain a promising yet relatively small industry. He states that ISRO should be doing more to foster it and said that some other firms are frustrated at what they say is the slow execution of projects and lack of government support, which are hampering India's efforts to compete with China and Russia as a cheaper option for launching satellites. India's successful mission, completed on a shoestring budget of $74 million, has boosted its prestige in the global space race and, back on Earth, raised the profile of Indian companies involved in the project. The Mangalyaan was built in 15 months with two-thirds of its parts manufactured by domestic firms such as Godrej & Boyce and India's largest engineering company, Larsen & Toubro. India's space programme began in the early 1960s and the country has launched 30 Indian and 40 foreign satellites.

Business conglomerate says that a single trip to Mars is not enough for long-term success The programme developed mainly after Western powers imposed sanctions following India's first nuclear weapons test in 1974. Still, it remains a small player in a global space industry estimated to be worth more than $300 billion a year.

But the programme is still small, and the small number of launches limits the growth potential of private companies that supply them. Between 2007 and 2012, ISRO accomplished about half of its planned 60 missions, government data showed. The government cited "development

HISTORIC MOMENT: India joins an elite club of nations who have successfully carried out interplanetary space missions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he wants to expand India's 50-year-old space programme. The government has increased funding for space research by 50 percent to almost $1 billion this financial year.

complexity" as the reason for the delay in some missions. Between 2012 and 2017 the target is 58 missions. The agency has completed 17 missions so far, and ISRO did not say why the number remained low. Some company executives and experts do not see that changing any time soon, with the absence of heavy rocket launchers, too few launch facilities and bureaucratic delays hampering growth.

The facts surrounding stunning S

tunning. It is an issue that poses an enormous amount of contention within the Muslim community. Why are some of us so antistunning? Do we know what stunning really entails? Are we aware of the amount of halal meat that is stunned in the UK? Stunning of animals before slaughter is a near-global practice. While some forms of stunning render the animal completely unconscious before slaughter (a practice which we at the HFA do not condone), others render the animal highly insensitive to pain before slaughter whilst they are still conscious (see table below for more information on stunning methods that the HFA allow and forbid). Our charitable arm – the Halal Food Foundation – recently attended an event up North; the majority of public comments and queries they received were focused on the ‘haraam’ or ‘forbidden’ aspect of stunning and the fact that we as a certification body should outlaw this practice and resort back to the prophetic method of animal slaughter. As some halal certification bodies in the UK have adopted a no-stun stance, it appears that some of their followers and advocates have been misinforming the community that stunned meat is not deemed permissible by Islamic law. However, what the public do not seem to have noticed is that even halal certification

bodies that do not have stunning as a part of their halal standard / general code of practice, nowhere in their official literature (online, external, hard copies) do they refer to stunned meat being haraam if the animal is alive at the point of slaughter. At the HFA we do not deem any animal halal unless it IS alive at the time of slaughter. Organic halal meat producers, Abraham Produce, asked the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) – who do not accept stunning – for their opinion on this matter and they said the following: “HMC is erring the side of caution by adopting a blanket policy to the issue of stunning and not certifying it. HMC has never claimed that all animals die due to stunning or that stunning the animal renders the

animal Haram automatically.” Other disagreements on stunning arise when individuals look at certain Quranic verses: “Forbidden to you (for food) are dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and that over which has been invoked other than the name of Allah, that which has been killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a headlong fall or by being gored to death, that which has been partly eaten by a wild animal, unless you are able to slaughter (in due form), and that which is sacrificed on stone (altars).” (5:3) Those who are against stunning say that animals frequently die from stunning: we are told by Allah that the dead animal is forbidden to consume (as stated in the ayah above) – as mentioned before, if an animal was to die as a direct

cause of the stun, this animal would not be declared or certified as halal by the HFA. Various tests and investigations have been carried out by ourselves in conjunction with the University of Bristol to deduce the voltage at which poultry can be stunned without being killed by said stun – and these currents have been duly put into practice. We also have HFA representatives present at plants and slaughterhouses to ensure that all animals are alive at the time of slaughter. Should the incredibly unlikely occurrence of an animal being killed by the stun occur, this animal will be swiftly removed from the halal production line. Another misconception that many have on stunning is that the blood of the animal remains in its body as its heart has stopped before its neck is cut –

The following information outlines what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable stunning methods to the HFA: For Poultry: waterbath is acceptable, whilst gassing is not. For Lamb, Sheep and Goat: head only electric stunning is acceptable, whilst captive bolt is not. For Cattle: nothing is acceptable, meaning captive bolt (penetrative or non-penetrative), percussive blow and penetrative pneumatic is not.

this is not the case as the animal is live at the time of slaughter. If the animal is alive at the time of slaughter, its heart is still beating meaning that its blood will drain out with ease following its slaughter. It is argued that stunning causes less blood to drain out of the carcass; university research has clearly showed that after five minutes from slaughtering, blood loss in birds and animals becomes identical, hence, this argument is invalid. The HFA do not certify stunning by a violent blow as this renders the animal completely unconscious prior to slaughter – an act that, as stated numerous times – we do not accept. The only methods of stun currently used and put into practice by the HFA is the waterbath stun of poultry – we do not accept gas stunning either. We do not believe that the stunning of animals prior to slaughter is haram as long as the animal is alive at the time of slaughter – which we categorically ensure it is. Amongst the industry (national and international) we are an incredibly trusted, reliable and reputable organisation; our halal certificate and accreditation is one that you can trust and so we were disheartened to learn that negative propaganda and malicious rumours are being spread about us and our products and we hope that this blog post has helped to clarify our stance on things.

New Mercedes-AMG C63 all set to evolve the equation of power, performance and agility By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

With a new name, new engine, new technology, same purpose – succeeding the most popular AMG model in its history, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is set to evolve the formula – with even greater power, performance, agility and focus than ever before. Using the 205 series aluminium and steel chassis structure as its basis, the new C 63 adds an all-new 4.0-litre biturbo engine to endow it with phenomenal performance while unique, three-stage adjustable dampers and a bespoke steering setup. The technology applied to the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is focussed on enhancing the performance of the car – to make it as exhilarating as possible yet viable to be used every day. The dynamic engine mounts fitted to the C 63 are a good example. They reduce unwanted vibration from the engine and gearbox by softening during normal driving conditions – when greater agility is required, they stiffen to improve responses through the speed-sensitive, electromechanical steering system and limit unwanted movement in the drivetrain. Every C 63 is fitted with 245/40 R18 (front) and 265/40 R18 (rear) tyres while the ‘S’ model gains 245/35 R19 (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear) tyres. A new braking system uses 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the rear with the option of enhanced ceramic discs available for track-orientated driving.

Mercedes-AMG C 63

At the heart of any AMG is its handbuilt engine. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 uses the M177 engine – a sister unit to the M178 found in the new Mercedes-AMG GT. It displaces 3,982 cc and is equipped with twin turbochargers neatly packaged in the ‘V’ of the cylinder banks and cooled via a special duct built in the bonnet of the car. The C 63 produces 476 hp and, in C 63 S guise, 510 hp. It’s nearly a third more efficient than the engine it replaces yet, in ‘S’ form, produces more power and emits less CO2 – now from 192 g/km. A heavily revised version of the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed transmission features on the C 63 - now with significantly quicker shift times to improve responses. Matching the changes under the skin are extensive changes to the appearance of the car – both outside and in. New front bumpers with deep airdams to feed the intercoolers are joined by the unique AMG grille and a new bonnet with subtle power domes. Unique, wider front wings (to clear the wider front track) feature subtle ‘V8 biturbo’ badges above a set of similarly discreet sill extensions. The rear bumper is also new, designed to house the new quad exhaust pipes below a small wing mounted on the bootlid and above the tailgate glass on the Estate. Inside, the changes are immediately apparent, with deep, contoured seats set behind a small, unique AMG wheel and recalibrated AMG dials. The option of AMG sports seats can be specified along with a range of different leather treatments and trim finishes – from piano black to carbon and aluminium. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 Saloon and Estate are both available to order in the UK from next month, with prices and specifications set to be announced when ordering opens. First deliveries are expected to take place in Spring 2015.

A new Honda sport derivative

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Ahead of the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, Honda has released images and details of several enhancements across the 2015 Swindon-built Civic model range and the launch of the new Civic Sport derivative. Based on the Civic hatchback, and powered by the 1.6-litre, 120 PS diesel engine or the 1.8-litre, 142 PS petrol engine, it features a colour-coded rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels unique to the Sport derivative. In addition, the Civic Sport echoes the striking design of the forthcoming Type R, with a new front bumper featuring a lower grille mesh and a black roof lining for the cabin. Each model in the 2015 Civic range features Honda’s City Brake Active (CTBA) system as standard specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents. The system uses radar technology to scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected and is engineered to operate at speeds below 30 km/h. Both the Civic and Civic Tourer benefit from a new front exterior design, providing a new sporty outlook for the model featuring new headlamps with integrated daytime running lights and a new sleek front bumper. The

Civic hatchback also features a new rear bumper, side skirts, a rear spoiler finished in black, and LED rear combination lamps. These aesthetic enhancements combine nicely with the class-leading interior space for which the range is renowned. The Civic’s 477-litre and Civic Tourer’s 624-litre boot capacity remains the best in their respective segments. The 2015 Civic range will also premiere the all-new Honda Connect in-car audio and information system. Honda Connect offers convenience and connectivity whilst on the road, with key features including; AM/FM, DAB and Internet Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, internet browsing, satellite navigation and rear-view parking camera. The system runs Android 4.0.4 and features the familiar pinch, swipe and tap functionality of a smartphone on a seven inch display screen.

McLaren 650S Sprint ‘makes its debut’ The new 650S Sprint by McLaren GT is set for its global competitive premiere this weekend at the penultimate round of the GT Cup race at Donington Park, UK. The 650S Sprint is developed and optimised for the track, and eligibility has now been confirmed to race in the NARRA US GT series, the SCCA GT Championship and the UAE GT series. McLaren

GT factory driver Rob Bell will be joined by Germanbased journalist Dale Lomas, for the weekend’s triple-header. The covers were pulled off the McLaren 650S Sprint at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last month, and the race this weekend marks the European debut of the car, in the most public of arenas. Racing with McLaren GT customer team Von Ryan Racing, the 650S Sprint will contest three races during the weekend – one sprint race incorporating a driverchange on Saturday, followed by two shorter events on Sunday,

with the drivers contesting one complete race each. McLaren GT factory driver Rob Bell returns to the Von Ryan Racing team after running at this year’s Total 24 Hours of Spa in the 12C GT3. In addition, Bell has been involved in the development of the 650S Sprint so has extensive knowledge of the track-only racer. Bell will share driving duties with experienced Nürburgring-racer Lomas, who has shown good pace in testing ahead of the event. Based on the road-going 650S, the aerodynamically enhanced design of the 650S Sprint offers increased levels of downforce,

Exhilarating By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Designed by a Daimler AG and developed entirely in house by AMG, the new GT is an all-new twoseater sports car mixing the exhilaration expected of an AMG with precision, comfort and practicality. The GT is the second sports car developed entirely inhouse by Mercedes-AMG. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is being made in Affalterbach according to the "one man, one engine" principle. In the AMG engine shop, highly qualified fitters assemble the engines by hand according to the strictest quality standards – visible on the AMG engine plate with the engine technician's signature. Codenamed M178 – the V8 biturbo engine, displaces 3,982 cc and is equipped with dry sump lubrication and twin turbochargers. In GT S form it produces its peak of 510 hp (GT: 462 hp) at 6,250 rpm (6,000 rpm) and 650 Nm of torque (600 Nm) between 1,750 and 4,750 rpm (1,600 and 5,000 rpm). It returns 30.1 mpg (30.4 mpg) and emits 219 g/km of CO2 (216 g/km). It’s the first sports car engine with internally mounted turbochargers

and the revised air intakes offer optimised cooling of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo M838T engine. In the 650S Sprint, the proven powerplant is retained from the 650S roadcar, with a unique engine and transmission calibration to further enhance on track drivability and driver engagement. The car will be priced at around £200,000.

('hot inside V'), is configured in two output ratings: as a GT with 462 hp and as a GT S with 510 hp and hits 3.8 seconds from zero to 62 mph and a top speed of 193 mph. It’s also the newest member of the Mercedes BlueDIRECT engine family. The creative interaction of diverse external design elements combined with the extensive Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive assistance systems and ultimate luxury, lends the twoseater coupé a superior, self-confident look.

Audi has made significant gains in reducing the whole-life impact on the environment of its latest high-tech sports car. Compared with its predecessor, the new Audi TT scores high with an increase in power output of up to 14 per cent and a simultaneous decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of 11 per cent. As the premium vehicle manufacturer states in its new life cycle assessment of the thirdgeneration TT, this means that each car in the series saves around 5.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases over its entire life cycle. This includes not just carbon dioxide, but other substances such as

Host of new environmentally-friendly technology for the new Audi TT methane, nitrous oxide and halogenated organic emissions. A host of technologies have contributed towards the positive life cycle assessment of the Audi TT, including lightweight construction. An intelligent combination of materials have been used by Audi engineers, who have now, for the second time in a row, succeeded in reducing the car’s unladen weight. The first model change in 2006 saw weight savings of up to 90 kilograms

Infiniti presents Q80 Inspiration: Infiniti’s vision of category-breaking, supreme luxurious driving; a top-ofthe-line four-seat fastback that rises above the crowd. It’s an audacious and elegant step forward for Infiniti as a global player; designed to shake up the status quo in the premium large four-door club; a nocompromise ambassador of driver-

centric powertrain and on-board technologies. Next month in Paris, Infiniti will introduce the progressive Q80 Inspiration to the media and provide a glimpse into its high-performance and efficient hybridelectric powertrain implementation as well as additional technologies. In profile, Infiniti Q80 Inspiration extends to 5052 millimetres (198.9

achieved. With the front-wheel driven 2.0 TFSI engine variant of the new TT now weighing in at just 1,230 kilograms, this means that the car is once again around 50 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. Weight reduction and intelligent lightweight construction measures also have an impact on the vehicle manufacturing process. Here they’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions by around nine per cent, or 800 kilograms. inches) with a long wheelbase of 3103 mm (122.2 in) framed by custom 22-inch five-dual-spoke lightweight alloys. It strikes an imposing stance with its width of 2027 mm (79.8 in) and height of 1350 mm (53.1 in). The Q80 Inspiration’s expansive, edgy, sensual interpretation of the Infiniti brand really makes a statement. There are no side-door mirrors to break up the aesthetics of the unmistakable profile, the full roof length of the teardrop passenger greenhouse is accentuated by lightweight acoustic glass, and its doors open portal style which allows the stunning cabin to be fully on display while driver and passengers step in and out with ease. A concept as impactful as Q80 Inspiration is set to push boundaries in more ways than through the beauty of its attention-grabbing skin. The cabin is able to bring together the four occupants in a highly stylised and personalised ambiance of the highest quality. Earmarked for an advanced adaptive suspension, the light and rigid chassis combines with the acoustic glass all around and additional sound deadening to promise a driving and ride experience among the very best. A design and technological highlight to which Infiniti’s four worldwide design studios will refer regularly in coming years, the Q80 Inspiration four-door fastback is to be taken as clear intent to have an entry into the newly defined premium fastback segment.

SPORT THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS WITH THE BIGGEST NAMES

‘Hidden Resistance’ to black managers The head of one of England’s leading NGO’s, dedicated to supporting diversity in sport, has said there should be at least nine times as many black managers in the top four divisions of football. Arun Kang, Chief Executive of Sporting Equals, is the latest stakeholder to have his say on the publicised topic, highlighting the misrepresentation of black or minority ethnic coaches in the sport. From the Premier League through to League Two there are only two black managers, Huddersfield’s Chris Powell and Carlisle’s Keith Curle. Earlier this week, the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive, Gordon Taylor, said the stats make for a worrying read, saying there was a ‘hidden resistance’ in regard to BME managers in football. Responding to the comments,

“It’s now been over 30 years since BME players have been competing on the field but off the field we've seen very little progress in black managers coming up through the system.”

Kang said the current statistics are a ‘scandal’ and action must be taken to address them. He said: “The BME population now stands at 20 per cent in England so all things being equal there should be 18 black managers in the Premier and Football League. “It’s now been over 30 years since BME players have been competing on the field but off the field we've seen very little progress in black managers coming up through the system. “I think it’s now got to the stage where we need to consider positive action measures such as the so called ‘Rooney rule’.” The ‘Rooney Rule’, named after Dan Rooney, chairman of the NFL’s Diversity Committee in the US,

currently requires every NFL team to interview one BME individual for head coaching or senior football operation opportunities that become available This rule was also suggested by Taylor in previous months and he said he was disappointed that the legislation wasn’t brought up during the football league’s latest AGM despite reassurances from chairman, Greg Clarke. An event is now set to take place at the House of Lord’s on 20th November, hosted by Lord EMPLOYED: Chris Powell and Keith Curle (inset) are England’s only two black managers currently coaching one of the country’s top 92 clubs

DISAPPOINTED: Arun Kang, chief executive of Sporting Equals, labelled the figures a scandal and said he would back a move such as the introduction of the ‘Rooney rule’

Faulkner, looking at the topic with RESISTANCE: PFA Chief, Gordon Taylor, senior members of the PFA says there was a hidden resistance against attending. hiring BME managers Kang added: “The event will be used to publicise our Leaderboard report which shows that only three per cent of coaches across all sports are from BME backgrounds. So sadly the problem is not just confined to football.” Current statistics provided by the PFA state that 18 per cent of those people currently completing their coaching courses are from BME backgrounds.

SPORT BOXER GEORGE GETS BACK INTO THE GROOVE AS HE WINS THE EUROPEAN SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE George Groves proves he has courage and heart after a previous crushing knockout defeat by Carl Froch in Wembley

By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

The sport of boxing sometimes produces boxers that the British public love to hate and this is usually because the boxer has tendency to display arrogance and sometimes disrespect towards his opponents. There are many boxers that fall into this category of being in a love hate relationship with the British public and one such boxer is George Groves. I recall the two epic boxing battles that Groves had with British world champion Carl Froch. Groves had been on the verge of winning against Froch on both occasions they fought, but on the first the fight was controversially stopped by the referee and then in the rematch he was convincingly knocked out. However the hate towards Groves by the British public was due to his antics outside the ring and in the build up to the fights against Froch as he was seen to disrespect the more senior and established Froch and then gave him little respect for his previous boxing achievements. The phrase of “respect is not given, you have to earn it” applied to the Groves fight against Froch because even though Groves entered the ring in that bout as the most hated with a number of boos, he then left the ring to cheers and applause acknowledging his boxing ability and effort against Froch. Groves has earned his “boxing stripes” and recognition the hard way and on Saturday showed his grit and metal to come back in his first fight after a huge loss and claim the European super-middleweight title against the limited but durable champion Christopher Rebrasse. Groves returned to Wembley for his fight against Rebrasse that was the scene of his previous defeat and he must have faced his demons in the ring that night as he remembered the time and place where it all went wrong and he was knocked out semi unconscious by Froch. Groves started the boxing bout against Rebrasse cagily and

lacked his normal boxing agility, but soon proved all the doubters wrong as he started to gain confidence and winning the fight. The Groves boxing display against Rebrasse would have been more convincing had he won the fight via knockout and had he been dominant for the whole duration of the fight but a majority decision was enough to give him my personal seal of approval and confirm to me that the nicknamed “Saint Groves” is back and ready for another shot at the world title. Groves told Carl Froch after the Rebrasse win that he would like to be given another opportunity to fight him, but Froch has made it clear that he has no plans to fight Groves and believes that the two defeats he inflicted on him proves that he (Froch) is the better fighter and had it been a previous Groves win only then would the third fight have taken place. I personally support Froch’s decision not to fight Groves and would personally like to see Groves win against a foreign World Champion opponent and bring the world title back to the UK adding to the British list of current world champion fighters. The most probable next fight for Groves is more than likely going to be against American super-middleweight world champion Anthony Dirrell who is the current holder of the prestigious WBC world champion belt. In my opinion the fight for Groves against Dirrell will finally cement Groves place amongst the elite world champions as I fully expect Groves to win against Dirrell based on Dirrell’s previous boxing bout against Sakio Bika last month and recent, lack lustre boxing performances. In regards to Groves popularity then I must confess that previously I was one of them “Groves haters” who was very critical of Groves pre-fight verbal sparring matches against his opponents (especially Carl Froch) but Groves recent boxing courage and ability has converted me to become his supporter and proved that his arrogance can be mistaken for his confidence and selfbelief to win.

Mutu heads to ISL CHAMP: Big John’s celebrate between team mates and manager, Bob Saddiq

Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu left Romanian club Petrolul Ploiesti on Friday, opening the door to a transfer to FC Pune City in the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL). “Petrolul decided to terminate Mutu's contract and the 35-year-old player is free to join any team he wants,” the Ploiesti-based club said in a statement. The controversial forward is set to join the likes of Frenchmen Nicolas Anelka, Robert Pires and David Trezeguet as well as World Cup winning Italian duo of Alessandro Del Piero and Marco Materazzi in the ISL. Co-owned by Bollywood actor Salman Khan, Pune, who also have a technical partnership with Mutu's former club Fiorentina, have confirmed their ongoing

negotiation with the Romanian player. Mutu, who has played for a host of Italian clubs including Inter Milan and Juventus, returned to his homeland in the January transfer window after agreeing to leave French Ligue 1 club Ajaccio for Petrolul. The journeyman is Romania's joint top international goal-scorer after netting 35 times in 77 internationals, the same goal tally as the great Gheorghe Hagi. Mutu has served two doping bans and broke his contract with Italy's Cesena in 2012 to join modest Corsican club Ajaccio, saying he would score more goals in Ligue 1 than Paris St Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Diversity ‘doesn’t’ shine here As the 17th series of the Asian Games kicked off earlier this week, the slogan ‘diversity shines here’ was not at the forefront of the organisers’ minds when the Qatari women’s basketball team were told they could not wear their hijabs. Their response – they withdrew from the competition. Not exactly the start the South Korean hosts may have been expecting. International regulations currently prevent players from wearing the attire, as according to International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rules, Article 4.2.2 – players cannot wear ‘headgear, hair accessories and jewellery’. The Qatari players had been asked to remove their hijabs before their opening group game against Mongolia on Wednesday, but chose to forfeit the match instead.

Women’s basketball team withdraw over hijab debate

With no sign of the rule being relaxed ahead of their scheduled match against Nepal on Thursday, the team took the further decision to withdraw from their remaining games at the Asiad. “We have decided not to take part in the remainder of the Asian Games women's basketball competition,” an assistant with Qatar's National Olympic Committee told Reuters by telephone. Nepal's players took to the court for 15 minutes at the Samsan World Gymnasium, passing and shooting among themselves, before the forfeit was announced. Both Qatar games were recorded

FORFEIT: The Qatar women’s basketball team withdrew from the 17th Asiad after international rulings stated they could not wear their religious headwear

as 20-0 defeats on the Games' official website. The wearing of hijabs has become a hot topic in sport in recent years with Muslim athletes complaining that they are being discriminated against. Judoka Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani hit the headlines at the 2012 London Olympics when Saudi Arabia demanded she be allowed to compete wearing a hijab. While international judo federation rules at the time barred her from doing so, Shaherkani was eventually allowed to compete wearing a modified veil.

It is extremely hard to argue against the fact that Floyd Mayweather is the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. His amazing unbeaten career, picking up 47 wins from 47 bouts since debuting in 1996, has seen the man they call ‘Money’ establish his name amongst the greatest of all time. Yet, alongside his seemingly endless list of admirers, there remain his critics, even if there is only a handful. Amir Khan has been extremely vocal about his views on Mayweather since his potential bout with the welterweight earlier this year. After he was seemingly overlooked in favour of a showdown with Marcos Maidana in May, Khan has now said he is ready to take on the A-list boxer. According to Boxingscene the newly reinstated WBA welterweight champion said he is wants the challenge and believes Mayweather is no longer at his best. Khan said: “Styles make fights. I know Mayweather’s fought other

styles and has looked so good against them, but he’s never fought anyone with my style, someone young, hungry, fit and strong who can punch. “I know I will cause Mayweather problems. He’s getting older and slower now. It’s the best time to catch him. I really believe I do have the style to beat him.” In response, a confident Mayweather said he has always been a ‘champion’ and despite claims of him being ‘older’ and ‘slower’ by the 27-year-old Bolton fighter, he is still unbeaten. Speaking at his post-

fight press conference with Marcos Maidana earlier this month, Mayweather said: “Amir Khan is a solid, good competitor. If that fight happens to come my way, then we’ll make it happen. “When Amir Khan was an amateur, I was a champion. When Amir Khan turned pro, he got knocked out, I was a champion, and when Amir Khan got knocked out again, I was a champion. “When he lost his belt again, I was still a champion and I’m still right here.”
