ANGER: Pakistani Christians staged protests in Lahore following the blasts

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

More than 80 people have been killed in the Pakistani city of Peshawar after a horrific double suicide bombing at a local church last weekend. St John’s Church was targeted by the assailants in what is believed to be the

deadliest attack ever on Christians in the country with two militant groups claiming responsibility. Groups Junood ul-Hifsa and Jandullah, who reportedly have links to the Taliban, said they ordered the attack to retaliate against US drone strikes which continue to hit the country. A spokesperson for the prior group said: “They are the

enemies of Islam, therefore we target them. We will continue our attacks on non-Muslims on Pakistani land.” Political and religious leaders have already condemned the attack, but angry crowds took to the streets in the weekend to denounce the state's failure to protect minorities. On Sunday, demonstrators blocked roads in P e s h a w a r , Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi whilst further rallies are expected to continue throughout the week. Meanwhile, young Christian mourners rallied outside Peshawar's Lady Reading hospital shouting insults and angry chants against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and politicians Imran Khan – the politician whose party leads the provincial government in Peshawar. Speaking to journalists outside the hospital, Mr

Khan said this latest assault was an ‘attack on humanity’ and a deliberate scheme to halt peace talks. “Isn’t it strange that whenever peace talks are pursued, these attacks take place, and I want to point out that there was also a drone strike today,” he said in reference to a strike by an unmanned US aircraft that killed six suspected militants in North Waziristan on Sunday. The controversial politician has long blamed the drone strikes for the unrest in the country and continues to blame the CIA despite his many critics. The government has announced three days of mourning in the country. Christians represent approximately 1.6 per cent of Pakistan’s 179m population whilst Muslims make up a staggering 97 per cent.

Naheed Nusrat, wife of internationally acclaimed music legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, sadly passed away last week after reportedly losing her battle with cancer. The wife of the Qawwali pioneer, and aunty of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, had been battling the disease when she died at the Credit Valley Hospital in Ontario, Canada on Friday 13th September. Naheed was widowed following the death of her husband in August 1997 and is survived by one daughter. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was in Leeds on the day of his aunty’s passing, with his First Direct Arena concert taking place just

two days later. He expressed his grief in the following statement: “I am extremely saddened by the recent demise of aunt Naheed. She was a devoted mother and a pillar of strength to my Ustad and uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. “We had always enjoyed a close relationship and I was in constant contact with her even after she moved to Canada. My thoughts and prayers are with my niece and aunt Naheed’s family.” He added: “May Allah grant her soul eternal peace and give strength to her family to bear this loss.” Tributes have also continued to come in over social media sites. On Twitter, Rafaeel A Chaudhry

wrote: “May her soul rest in peace” whilst Imran Amin tweeted: “Today The biggest fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mrs. Naheed Nusrat passed away. Respect for madam.” Actor Faisal Qureshi simply added ‘RIP’.

Sensational ‘Seven Star’ 600-seater ‘Tipu Sultan’ being dubbed as Britain’s landmark restaurant

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

While there’s no shortage of ‘Taj Mahal’ and ‘Curry Palace’ restaurants in Britain, which don’t even come close to emulating the magnificence and grandeur of their namesake, a brand new eatery has taken the South-Asian restaurants to a completely different level. Tipu Sultan. An odd choice of name for a restaurant one may muse, however, the new grand 600-seater restaurant which opened in Mosely, Birmingham last week, has been the talk of the town. The awe-inspiring luxurious halal establishment, located in Alcester Road, Moseley, emerged through the vision of the owners to create a landmark UK restaurant that gave a truly majestic dining experience in a way that has never been attempted before. And boy, have they cracked it! Drawing inspiration from Tipu Sultan, an 18th century ruler, warrior and scholar, and combining his legacy with the history of South Asia, the owners have created a sensational restaurant resplendent in the opulent style of his palace. The history of the building also bears great significance. The investors bought ‘The Jug of Ale’ pub five years ago which had been the central point for Indie bands in the area. The likes of Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and The Verve all performed at ‘The Jug of Ale’ on their way to super-stardom. Taking three years to conceptualise, and led by its’ key partner, who clearly has a great eye for detail, and with his substantial experience in the food industry, foodies have been given a site that exudes a ‘wow factor’ from both the interior and exterior of the building. With materials sourced from Dubai and Pakistan, vast ornate walnut wood-carvings and panels set the ambience; walls decked

with intricate hand-crafted metal repousse work and the stunning crystal chandeliers will have your jaw on the floor. Private booths, marble tiling, mirrored walls, covings and carvings, paintings, silks, velvets and fine luxurious details ensure the entire restaurant oozes with regal grandeur. The entire structure and interior replicates a very ‘Moghul-like feel’ and is so eclectic that diners can expect a range of views no matter where they choose to sit. Each section of the restaurant has its own unique theme designed to such intricate detail that it is, as seamless as it is diverse, all at the same time all whilst lavished with fresh orchids, plants and greenery to soften each area creating a sumptuous atmosphere.

“We wanted to ensure that every diner who enters the building should feel the energy of a seven star restaurant, experiencing a wow factor about everything around them.” The two-floor restaurant incorporates an impressive banqueting floor, function room, conference room and a separate prayer room. The opulence of the Tipu Sultan restaurant carries through to even the washrooms. A trip to the conveniences has to be made if only to take in the ultimately grand features - beautifully carved solid wood doors, wallto-wall mirrors, a dressing table and the most striking 6ft-tall statues decorating the corners of the room. A definite ‘take-a-pic’ opportunity for the girlies! With alcohol totally off-limits on the premises, families can dine in the resplendent surroundings with the offerings from an extensive mouth-watering halal menu.

experience in Birmingham

Dishes are served up by a team of twelve highly-skilled chefs from India, Nepal and Pakistan. The vast range of authentic dishes, many of them specialities from across India and Pakistan, and in particular the Punjab, leaves the diner truly spoilt for choice. The desert menu includes a wide range of desi yummies, cakes and Moven Pick ice-creams. Brand PR Manager, Harpreet Kaur, commented: “The opulence and grandeur of Tipu Sultan is no less than any seven star establishment typically found in major cities like Mumbai and Dubai. “We wanted to ensure that every diner who enters the building should feel the energy of a seven star restaurant, experiencing a wow factor about everything around them.

“Our aim has been to deliver magnificent surroundings eminent of a palace and dripping with such splendour so as to leave our guests mesmerised. “Our vision is that Tipu Sultan becomes the landmark restaurant in Birmingham and the UK not only for its opulence but also for the great food it has on offer. There are plans around developing food concepts such as Tipu Sultan across the country. Ganesh Kamble, Restaurant Manager, comments: “ We are all excited about the restaurant, we have a great team here at Tipu Sultan awaiting to greet our guests. We hope that our visitors will enjoy all aspects of our restaurant from the ambience, food and the service,. We have recruited our service staff locally creating 30 new jobs. We have also taken on young apprentices and school

leavers who wish to persue a career in catering and restaurant management. These are the future for our business. Partner, Khalid Hussain, goes on to say: “I am extremely proud of this venture and achievement and pleased now that we are finally open and ready for our long waiting customers. It has not been all plain sailing for this project. It has been hit with delays mainly from poor weather conditions last year and earlier this year which meant we could not get on with the external decor and landscaping. The project also went over budget as we wanted to create something unique and outstanding for Birmingham.”

College Purchasing of ficer at Blackburn in cour t uses the veil to hide her identity

Neighbours of Lorgat said she rarely wore a niqab in public and pictures on her Facebook page show her without a veil. The case comes at a time of increased public debate over Muslim head-dress, following the decision by a college in Birmingham to scrap a ban on veils amid protests from students. Lorgat’s fraud came to light in February last year when a member of staff noticed discrepancies on the college’s credit card. Between

17th July 2008 to 17th January 2012, Lorgat used the college’s credit card to the sum of over £21,000, spending the money on a trip to Alton Towers, holidays, paying for personal solicitors bills, renovations and repairs on her bathroom, prescription sunglasses and food shopping. Lorgat, who claimed she started using the credit card following the breakdown of her 20-year marriage, voluntarily removed the niqab before entering the dock. Speaking after PC sentencing, Anita Whittle from Blackburn Police

said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence, especially given the amount of money that Shaheda Lorgat spent on Blackburn College’s credit card which was there to be used for things that benefit the college and its students. “I hope that today’s sentence shows that fraud of any kind will not be tolerated, and those who think that it’s acceptable to commit this type of crime will be brought before the courts.” Lorgat was given a 12 month sentence for each of the 19 offences which will run concurrently.

Mass UK Immigration Impacting Schools

As speculation mounts that the Government plans to create 500,000 extra school places to cope with demand, UK Immigration Barristers investigates the impact of immigration on schools. Rising birth rates and rising immigration numbers have been described as the fundamental factors behind increasing pressure on schools as they take on more pupils every year. A spokesperson from UK Immigration Barristers said: “Rising birth rates and UK immigration go hand-inhand. The more people that arrive from overseas add to the population and those settled here go on to have families. The major factor to

consider is that families from some nations tend to have larger families than those that make up the ‘native’ UK population.” In a statement from the Department for Education (DfE), they said: “Under the proposals, we expect that 500,000 new school places will be introduced between 2015 and 2021 and we estimate the cost to be somewhere in the region of £7.5 billion.” Much has been made about the impact of UK immigration on public services, including schools, with much of the storm circulating in the national press. According to the Commons Public Accounts

Committee, 250,000 of the 500,000 proposed spaces need to be created by September 2013 alone. Concerns across the education sector include: overcrowded classes, compromising education quality, the number of pupils that lack the ability to speak English and the extra pressure put on teaching staff. UK Immigration Barristers added: “Unfortunately the blame for increasing pressures has been placed on mass UK immigration. However, regardless of the political wrangling on the subject of immigration a number of educational peers do agree that the biggest impact affects the

children and ethnicity should not deny a child the right to a quality education.” The underlying issue now, according to the Commons Public Accounts Committee, is how local councils will react. The initial consensus is that local authorities may well be forced to make rash decisions that could have huge implications on a child’s education. The bigger worry is that, in order to accommodate pupils, ‘brighter’ children could end up at schools deemed to be ‘failing’. Furthermore, schools fear a loss of resources including facilities such as libraries and sports halls as schools will have to transform such facilities into classrooms in

Homes in Cross Green are to receive further investment as part of the next stage of the Sustainable Communities Investment Programme (SCIP). At a meeting of the council’s executive board on Wednesday 4th September, members agreed to a cash injection of £4.05million to improve the look of 180 properties in the area along with the energy efficiency of the homes. As part of the next phase of the project works will be undertaken on a number of properties including installing new roofs, windows, doors, rainwater goods and the repointing of external walls and new boundary walls and yards. Alongside this energy efficiency works will be undertaken via Green Deal funding. A contractor for the latest lot of works will be appointed early in 2014, with work proposed to commence on site at the beginning of the next financial year.

order to accommodate a surge in student numbers. In a statement from the Chief Secretary of the Treasury, Danny Alexander, he told the Commons that: “Work on 261 schools due to be rebuilt or refurbished under the Government’s Priority School Building Programme will be completed two years early.” The plans to create 500,000 new school places were unveiled alongside the unveiling of a multi-billion pound education investment programme.

A disgruntled customer of British Airways thought up a unique way of complaining to the international airline giants last week. Hasan Syed, a businessman form the UK, purchased a promoted tweet to complain against the airline which allegedly failed to respond to his father's lost luggage. Instead of putting out a normal tweet, Hasan Syed, opted to pay for a promoted tweet, meaning it would appear at the top of anybody’s search which included British Airways. The tweet read: “Don't fly @BritishAirways. Their customer service is horrendous,” was commented upon by thousands of Twitter users, many of whom were in support of the message. Syed said that he decided to highlight British Airway's customer services following a trip his parents made from Chicago to Paris at the weekend, during which his father lost his luggage. Promoted tweets are generally bought by advertisers who want to reach a wider audience. Experts believe that using promoted tweets in such a manner could represent a new trend. Reacting to Syed's complaint, British Airways said: “We would like to apologize to the customer...the bag is due to be delivered today,” British Airways had told the BBC. Asian

Plonkers Drunk pilot arrested at Leeds Bradford Airport Pakistan International Airlines

SEPTEMBER 2013 - 1ST EDITION

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Pakistan International Airlines are once again at the centre of a c o n t r ove r s i a l investigation after a ‘drunken’ pilot was apprehended during a pre-flight check at Leeds Bradford Airport last week. 54-year-old Irfan Faiz, from Pakistan, appeared in front of Leeds Magistrates Courts on Friday 20th September charged with being four times over the legal alcohol limit when he boarded the Airbus 310 aircraft. Staff at the airport told the court Mr Faiz was “unsteady on his feet and smelt of intoxicants” during the pre flights checks on the plane which was set to fly 180 passengers to Islamabad, Pakistan. The pilot was allegedly chewing gum

to disguise the odor of the alcohol on his breath. Martin Townend, prosecuting, told Leeds Magistrates' Court: “He did gain access to the cockpit of the aircraft when he was stopped by managers, who contacted police, who arrested him. “There was a potential for the plane to have been piloted by a drunk pilot. That would have been dangerous for the passengers and people living in the UK, as that plane could have potentially crashed.” The legal alcohol limit for flying is 9mg of alcohol per 100ml yet when breathalysed, Mr Faiz registered 41mg, more than four times the legal amount. A spokesperson for Leeds Bradford Airport told reporters: “We are aware of the incident but the matter is being dealt with by the West Yorkshire Police.”

Likewise a PIA airline spokesman said on Thursday: “The pilot has been suspended. The airline will take strongest action against him and all those involved in such conduct. The PIA will not provide any legal assistance in such cases.” Mr Faiz has been flying for 25 years and could now face a maximum sentence of two years in prison when he is sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on the 18th October. This case is just the latest incident which threatens to tarnish the reputation of the international airline. Just one day prior three PIA male flight attendants were arrested by Manchester police after a British woman, travelling on KarachiLahore-Manchester flight on Tuesday 17th September, lodged a harassment complaint against them.

Additionally, last week, a dead cockroach was found in a food packet provided by the PIA on a flight heading towards New York. In May 2013 fighter jets were called upon to escort an aircraft to Stanstead airport after two men allegedly attempted to gain access to the plane’s cockpit.

Visitor bond scrapped

A controversial £3,000 visitor bond, for Indians coming to England, looks likely to fail in its application to be approved. Indian high commissioner to the UK, Jamini Bhagwati, made the allegations earlier this week because of ‘division at the highest level of government’ in Britain, on the need for such a move. The UK had recently said it was going ahead with introducing the cash bonds from November 2013. Under the proposal "high risk visitors" from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana, will be required to pay the bond for a six-month visitor visa. The fee would be above all visa costs. The applicants would have to forfeit the amount unless they left when required. It is designed as part of the government's intention to reduce the number of immigrants to less than a million per year.

Warning of India money transfer scam

West Yorkshire Police is urging residents to be aware of a financial scam which has seen a Leeds man lose thousands of pounds. The 78-year-old man was contacted by a man claiming to be from Yorkshire Bank's fraud department, and told he would be paid £500 for helping them to investigate fraud offences. The victim was first asked to withdraw £1,470 and transfer the money to India via a company called Moneygram. He was told that this would be returned through a courier service. In total, he transferred £6,570. The money has not been returned and he has now referred the matter to police for investigation. PC Pete Overton of North West Leeds Police, said: “This is a sophisticated scam where criminals have shamefully taken advantage of the good will of an elderly Leeds man. “The victim believed he was doing something helpful. Instead, he has been left thousands of pounds out of pocket. “I would urge anyone who receives a similar phone call to report the matter immediately to police. This doesn’t appear to be a one-off offence and could possibly be a nationwide scam.” Yorkshire Bank confirmed that it did not approach anyone for help with investigating fraud offences and said that the scenario was a variation of a crime known as ‘advanced fee fraud’, where people were approached by phone, email or letter and asked to pay a fee up front to later receive a greater reward. “We advise everyone to be suspicious of any approach which fits this scenario,” said a Yorkshire Bank spokesman. Anyone who is approached with a similar proposition is asked to contact Action Fraud on 0300 1232 040. Asian

of biscuit history A sweet tale for one of Yorkshire’s finest exports

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

They’re sweet, they’re crumbly and they’re from Yorkshire. For 160 years Fox’s biscuits have been the cupboard filler in homes throughout England and last week a plaque was unveiled to commemorate its first ever bakery in Batley. On Monday 9th September, Yorkshire Society Chairman Keith

Madeley and Fox’s Managing Director Colin Smith, arrived at the humble residence of 17 Whitaker Street, Batley, to erect a plaque at Fox’s first ever bakery site. The building, which has now been home to the Passwala family for more than 30 years, was the first home of the biscuit giants, when set up in 1853. Currently, Bilal Passwala, his wife Shirina, and his mother, Nasima, are residents at the address and

say they are delighted to be part of Yorkshire’s and Fox’s rich history. “We feel very happy to be a small part of Batley’s history and have been very excited about the plaque unveiling,” Mr Passwala said. “We always knew that Fox’s biscuits originated from our house and it’s nice to have this officially recognised.” Fox’s biscuits are still made locally in Batley yet have since grown into a

mammoth business, employing over 900 people and part of a £3 billion international food business. Fox’s Managing Director, Colin Smith, added: “This is an extremely special year for Fox’s biscuits as we celebrate out 160th birthday. I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor this milestone than going back to our roots and marking the birthplace of Fox’s Biscuits.” At the ceremony Mr Passwala and his family

were presented with a hamper of Fox’s biscuits and the company has vowed to deliver a hamper to the family every year on the anniversary of the plaque being erected. The family has also been invited on an exclusive VIP tour of the factory in Wellington Street, something that is not normally open to members of the public.

Payday lenders blocked

Six Yorkshire councils have joined forces to block the websites for all known payday lenders in the country. The councils which represent 2.4 million residents and employ 67,000 employees have taken the step of blocking the websites of all known payday lenders from all council terminals – including those in libraries and face-to-face customer contact centres as well as all staff computers. This agreement follows on from the announcement last month that the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has referred the whole of the payday lending industry to the Competition Commission because of concerns about the practices used by the industry and the impact on vulnerable citizens. All councils in West Yorkshire – Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield - along with City of York Council have taken the step to block the sites of almost 200 high interest payday lenders. Although a few other councils across the country have also taken this step, today’s announcement represents the single biggest initiative in the country in the campaign against what are described as predatory lenders. Anyone attempting to access Payday lender websites on a council computer will instead be redirected to an information page which will provide information about sources of money and debt advice and alternative sources of affordable credit and banking services through local credit unions. It has been estimated that across the six councils' geographic areas there are likely to be somewhere in the region of 78,000 residents who currently have payday loans. The payday lending industry has been one of the fastest growing parts of the financial services sector over the past five years and there are fears that it is having a significant impact on the lives of many people. National charity Step Change have reported that 42 percent of young people aged between 16 and 25, who come to them for help, have debts to payday lenders. Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council and chair of the Association of West Yorkshire Councils said: “We are seeing more and more evidence of people finding themselves with serious debt problems after being enticed into taking out loans from payday lenders. “A recent survey of 113 lenders by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau found 9 out of 10 applicants were not asked to provide proof that they could afford the loan. It can be no surprise that this sort of irresponsible lending leaves many people facing serious hardship. This is an industry which must face greater controls over their operations, but, until they do, we feel that it is necessary to take this action.” Leeds City Council is also organising a major national conference in Leeds on 25th October, devoted entirely to the subject of high cost lending and how to develop strategies to help citizens who find themselves trapped in a spiral of unsustainable debt. Speakers at the conference will include prominent national figures from the advice sector, the Department for Work and Pensions, Member of Parliament, Church of England and the world of sport. Final details of the conference will be issued during September. Asian

English college tell students they can’t wear veils on the premises

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Birmingham College’s decision to ban Muslim students from wearing their religious veils last week has been overturned following a successful online petition. Despite support from David Cameron, the decision was widely scrutinized by a number of external parties who voiced their concern. An online petition, launched by the NUS Black Students’ Campaign, received over 9,000 signatures in less than three days in opposition to the ban NUS Black Students’ officer, Aaron Kiely, believes the decision to prohibit the religious wear restricted the freedom of pupils to express their religious beliefs, and was glad to see the rule changed back so soon. He said: “I completely

Godfrey Bloom, the politician censured last week for joking that party activists were "s***s", is to quit the UKIP group in Europe. In a statement the Yorkshire and Humber MEP said he would stay in the European Parliament as an independent and remain a UKIP member, before adding he had ‘felt for some time’ the party was no longer for him. UKIP leader Nigel Farage insisted nothing Mr Bloom had said was in malice and he did not want to see his colleague ‘hounded out of the party’. The Yorkshire and Humber MEP had the whip removed last week after a recording emerged of him joking that a group of UKIP women who did not clean behind their fridges were ‘s***s’.

Pakistan earthquake

One person has died, and eight others are injured following a massive earthquake in Southern Pakistan earlier this week. Measuring 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, the earthquake hit the remote southwest province of Balochistan on Monday 23rd September. The town of Awaran suffered the only fatality, despite the size of the quake suggesting that many more could have been killed. With a depth of approximately nine miles, the quake struck 43 miles northeast of Awaran and 71 miles northwest of Bela, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Mud-walled homes tumbled in Awaran, according to Latif Kakar, director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Balochistan, yet devastation could have been a lot worse. The tremors lasted for a total of two minutes whilst aftershocks could be felt as far away as Karachi, 275 miles away from the main point of impact.

MEMORY: The Tribute in Lights shine up into the sky to remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack

Latest YouGov poll suggests changing opinion

SEPTEMBER 2013 - 1ST EDITION

Americans have turned against a confrontational approach to stopping terrorism, but 12 years after 9/11 many still think the country has not yet recovered. Twelve years after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, only a third of Americans think the country has recovered and in a new YouGov America poll, the public has turned away decidedly from confrontation with those who promote terrorism as the better means of preventing future attacks. Three years ago, Americans were evenly divided on whether confrontation or more isolationist behavior was the right way to keep the country safe from terrorist attacks. Now there is a clear majority wanting the U.S. to “stay out” of other countries’ affairs. In 2010, Democrats had long supported U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan (Barack Obama’s 2008 nomination was due in part to his opposition to the U.S. led invasion of Iraq). Nearly two in three Democrats then believed non-involvement was the safer approach. Their opinion has changed little since then. But Republican support for engagement, perhaps affected by their current opposition to military intervention in Syria, has dropped 21 points in three years. In 2010, 76% of Republicans felt the U.S. would be safer if it confronted countries and groups that promote terrorism. A decreasing percentage thinks the U.S. is less safe than it was in 2001 (18% say that now, compared with 28% three years ago). Four in ten say the

U.S. is safer today than in 2001. But there remains fear of another attack: 15% say another attack in the U.S. is very likely in the next 12 months, and another 37% say it is somewhat likely. Those distributions have remained fairly constant over the last few years. The President’s ratings on terrorism have slipped from the high marks he received after the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011. Now, 40% approve of his handling of terror, while more, 47%, disapprove. And this year President Obama narrowly trails former President George W. Bush when it comes to whether or not each President made the country safer from terrorism. More say Bush made the country safer from terrorism than say that about Obama; more say Obama made the U.S. less safe than think that about Bush. Two years ago, just four months after the death of bin Laden, Bush was more likely than Obama to be seen as making the country more and less safe. A majority are satisfied that the country has put the right amount of focus on 9/11. In the Northeast, the site of the attacks, even more say there has been the right amount of focus on the events. Just 6% in the Northeast (compared with 15% nationally) say there has too much focus on the memory of what happened twelve years ago. More now than before think the country has recovered from that attack a dozen years ago. But one in four still say that the country will never recover. That figure rises to one in three

among those 65 and older. Recent revelations about government surveillance within the country, as well as the long-term dissatisfaction with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, may have soured some on the methods the U.S. has employed to combat terrorism. Nearly one in three say additional security at airports and public events has gone too far and restricts civil liberties (younger Americans believe this even more; nearly half of independents think this). Less than half as many think security measures have not gone far enough. Only 38% think the military operations and surveillance since 9/11 have been worth the cost. While this percentage is down from 2011, the results are less negative than the answers Americans gave to the same question earlier this year, right after they heard former NSA analyst Edward Snowden’s revelations about government internet and telephone surveillance operations. And Republicans, who have continued to be more supportive than Democrats of U.S. actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, are more likely than Democrats to think government security actions since 9/11 have been worth the cost. 55% of Republicans say they have been, compared with 41% of Democrats, and just 26% of independents. Americans still disapprove of the NSA data collection activity by 51% to 38%. A majority of those over 65 approve, as do 51% of Democrats.

Delhi bus gang sentenced to death

All four men convicted of raping and murdering a 23-year-old woman in New Delhi were sentenced to death on Friday by a fast-track court in India. The four - Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma - had earlier been found guilty by the special court in Saket, a suburb of Delhi, but sentencing had been reserved. Judge Yogesh Khanna said the case fell under the ‘rarest of rare categories’. “[The court] cannot turn a blind eye on the rising cases of sexual assault against women,” he said. All four men reportedly broke down in tears when the sentence was pronounced and are all likely to lodge appeals. Meanwhile, the family of the victim and police hailed the sentence. “It's a subject of satisfaction for our investigating team,” said senior police official Tejinder Luthra, adding that ‘justice had been done’.

PM announces a further £60 million funding for new enterprises

Aspiring entrepreneurs from across Britain will get financial backing from the Government under a £69m package of support that will help create tens of thousands of new businesses, David Cameron announced this week. The Prime Minister is determined to help people who want to strike out on their own, helping small businesses to get on, while creating jobs and a boost to the economy. Over 30,000 new businesses have been created with support from Government schemes in the last two years alone. The new funding will build on this momentum and includes: Business mentoring and funding for people who are unemployed but want to start up a company. The New Enterprise Allowance will be extended for new starters up until the end of 2014, providing an additional 60,000 mentoring places for claimants. The scheme has already help to create more than 26,000 businesses and has

already proved incredibly popular with around 35,000 people formally registering an interest in a loan and nearly 8000 start-ups helped. The Prime Minister hosted a Downing Street reception to celebrate British enterprise on Thursday September 12th, attended by over 70 new British businesses who have benefited from the New Enterprise Allowance and Start Up Loan schemes. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I am determined to do all I can to support the British economy and that includes helping small businesses and budding entrepreneurs to get on. In the last two years we have helped tens of thousands of people to turn their ideas into a viable business, and this additional support will help thousands more. “My message is simple: if you have drive, determination and are prepared to work hard, we will back you.” The number of people in the UK involved in setting up or running a new

business has increased in recent years and the Government wants to ensure that continues. The Start-Up Loan scheme helps people to get their business ideas off the

ground with a loan of typically around £4,500 and mentoring support. The new funding will ensure there are more loans for those over 30 and specific support for ex-Service personnel. The scheme will also be rolled out in Scotland and Wales. The New Enterprise

They give you the financial support and the business advice you need to take the next step. Starting your own business can be tough but I’d encourage people to give it a go.” The most recent figures (published August 2013) show that beneficiaries of the New Enterprise most recent statistics Allowance come from all showing around 2,000 new ages, with more than 6,000 businesses being set up businesses started by every month. l’ o o h c s t a y a d t s r fi is h ‘Late for

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A primary school teacher from Essex had the surprise of her life last week after giving birth in the classroom a day before her maternity leave was set to start. Diane Krish-Veeramany went into labour whilst working at the Manford Primary School and subsequently gave birth on the premises. The 30-year-old teacher was only at 39 weeks when she gave birth to her baby boy, Jonah; just 20 minutes after contractions began. With paramedics unable to get to the scene in time, it was left to teaching assistants Dita Gojnovci, Chris Sword and Sam

Mustafa to help deliver the child, whilst taking directions from paramedics over the phone. Head teacher, Tina Jacobs, had phoned for an ambulance when it became apparent Mrs KrishVeeramany was going into labour but the healthy 9lb boy arrived before the paramedics had time to arrive. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the delighted mother explained how she had never imagined such a circumstance could happen to her. She said: “Everyone who has had a baby knows you try and plan these things in your head but everything happened so quickly, it was nothing like I had imagined. “It was so perfect, he’s

completely fine, I’m completely fine, and I’m grateful because otherwise I would have had it in the back of a car.” She added: “I intended to work until the week before but I didn’t dream I would have to have my baby in a classroom. “I’m still in shock, I really am, I can’t believe I had him at school. There was so much hype; all the children were so excited. “His dad said he was in such a hurry to get here but he still late for his first day at school.” The school has now named the room Jonah was born in after him in remembrance of the historic day.

Mosques are labelled as ‘terrorist organisations’ following 9/11

SEPTEMBER 2013 - 1ST EDITION

Changes to business immigration laws

Changes to the Immigration Rules announced today will give greater flexibility to business visitors and to businesses that employ and sponsor international migrants. The changes will also make the UK more attractive to international students by allowing them to take up corporate internships after completing their degree and making it easier for graduate entrepreneurs to take up skilled jobs. The changes to the business visitor route will allow employees to undertake corporate training in the UK where it is delivered by an external company. Global organisations will now be able to bring their own auditors to the UK on a business visitor visa, making it easier for them to complete international audits. Business visitors will also be able to do a short course of study while they are here.

CONTROVERSIAL: The labelling of New York mosques as ‘terrorist organisations’ has caused anger in Muslim communities

Privacy laws altered

New protections have been proposed to ensure people are not put off suing for defamation or invasion of privacy because of the fear of facing enormous legal costs. The changes would mean that if someone of modest means believed they had been defamed or had their privacy invaded by the media they could take legal action and would only be responsible for paying their own lawyers, even if they lost. This would be different from the standard position for civil court cases in England and Wales, where the losing party usually has to pay the winning side’s legal bills, on top of their own.

08703 608 606 Far right group – hoax story

A hoax story about a baby beating in Teesside which swept across the Internet, and appeared to be racially motivated, is being investigated by police. Cleveland Police said there was no truth in a report, which went viral on social media networks, that said a twomonth-old white baby was punched in the face and thrown against a wall by an Asian youth in a Teesside street. The story was ‘created’ by the Daily BALE (Britain’s Against Left-Wing Extremists) and was acknowledged as a hoax. Police are understood to be examining whether the story was racially motivated and if any action can be taken.

Robinson arrested

English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson was arrested last week following a controversial march that was prevented from going through the centre of one of Britain's biggest Muslim communities. A tweet on the EDL website stated: ‘Tommy's been arrested for incitement’. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 30-year-old man was arrested for breaching section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 and inciting others to breach section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986. “He has been taken to a central London police station where he currently remains.” 14 people were arrested at the rally including a 15-year-old boy who was arrested for going ‘equipped’, Scotland Yard said.

DISAPPOINTED: Imam Adam Jamal expressed his disapproval of the surveillance

MAYOR: Michael Bloomberg has defended the actions

More than ten mosques and Islamic centres in New York were put under police surveillance following the 9/11 attacks after the New York Police Department (NYPD) labeled them as terrorist organisations. The NYPD launched the surveillances under the title, “terrorism e n t e r p r i s e investigations” whereby they were able to spy on imams as well as record sermons. A confidential NYPD document revealed how police also wanted to place informants on the boards at mosques and other organizations, to further infiltrate the peaceful establishments. Asked about the report, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the tactics, saying they were only done to keep the peace. “What we do is we try to keep this city safe, totally consistent with what the laws require. We believe that we are compliant with those laws,” he said. Despite Mayor Bloomberg’s defence, the strategy has come under scrutiny from a number of religious organisations in the country. Former Leeds based imam, Adam Jamal, is currently living in the US and was disappointed to hear about the news. He said: “Firstly, I’d like to point out that their intention was to exploit a loophole in the law so that they can increase surveillance on certain communities. Second, I feel that the proper approach is to work in coordination with Muslim communities rather than

them as treating boogeymen out to get everyone. “In the long term this is a much healthier way to solve the problems.” Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, added: “This is a new level of low for the New York Police Department. “As we were inviting Commissioner (Raymond) Kelly and his leadership into our mosques — into our institutions — he was coming through the back door. Sarsour, whose organization helps new immigrants, was among about a dozen Muslim community members calling for a federal probe outside police headquarters. “I literally saw that document and saw my organization’s name on it and I started crying,” said Sarsour. “I felt betrayed.” In reply, Commissioner Kelly, speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, stressed that the intelligencegathering programs began after 9/11. “We follow leads wherever they take us,” Kelly said. “We’re not intimidated as to wherever that lead takes us. And we’re doing that to protect the people of New York City.” The news has also caused a storm on social media with many people expressing the disapproval of the surveillance project. On Twitter, Sam J Miller tweeted: “Another day, another reason to # C h a n g e Th e N Y P D : cops labeled mosques " t e r r o r i s t organizations", whilst Pete Climb added: “This is a disgrace on us. The NYPD had no evidence to start spying on Islamists”.

More than one in three people blame migrants for lack of job opportunities By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

SURVEY: Lord Ashcroft surveyed more than 20,000 people across the UK

A new report published last week suggests as many as 36 per cent of people in the UK believe they, or a family member, are struggling to find work because of foreign workers. The survey, conducted by Lord Ashcroft, covered more than 20,000 people across the country. As well as the aggrieved 36 per cent, 60 per cent of respondents believed that immigration provided more disadvantages for Britain than it does advantages. Former Tory party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft said that his findings show that the majority of the British public felt the Government did not have “any strategy” for dealing with immigration. He said: “Whatever people’s view of immigration itself, few think any recent government has had any real grasp of it, or that any of the parties do today. “Politicians underestimated

the size of the challenge, lost control of the situation, refused for too long to acknowledge that any problems might result and are now struggling but failing to cope. “Most do not feel there is any strategy for dealing with the number of migrants, either for their successful integration into British society, or for managing the effects they see or fear in terms of housing, infrastructure, jobs, the NHS, schools, or the benefits system.” Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May have already stated their intent, earlier this year, to reduce net migration from non-EU countries to less than 100,000 a year by 2015. More figures from the report also show that a staggering 77 per cent of respondents said they thought a dramatic reduction in immigration would reduce pressure on public services and welfare, making it easier for Britons to find jobs. Meanwhile, the Home Office “Go home or face arrest”

adverts were shown to have 79 per cent of respondents in favour of the message, however just 17 per cent said they felt the policy would work. Likewise, 24 per cent said that they or their family had been denied access to housing or other public services because immigrants seemed to have been given priority.

A shining hope

A UK based humanitarian charity has helped expand the operations of a large medical centre and lifesaving mobile clinics, which will revolutionise the health and social well-being of some of the most vulnerable people in Northern India. The Shining Hope Foundation, which provides grants for carefully selected projects across the world, has widened the medical programme of its partner charity, Karuna-Shechen. The two organisations have made a shared commitment to help some of the most remote and poorest communities in the region of Bihar, through providing long-term healthcare facilities and comprehensive medical support to a total of 36,000 people every year. The district currently receives very limited medical support, with almost 60 per cent of infants and 46 per cent of women malnourished, and a startling infant mortality rate of 63 per 1000 babies born.

Midday meals return

PLEDGE: David Cameron and Theresa May want net migration from non-EU countries to be less than 100,000 a year by 2015

The mid-day meal was cooked for the first time in two months in a primary school in Bihar where 23 school children died after eating contaminated food. The meal was cooked on Monday 16th September in the school in the village in the Saran district. “A total of 103 school children ate the mid-day meal, earlier this week. After the `16th July tragedy, no meal was cooked in the school for two months as parents and villagers were against it,” the official said. Authorities persuaded the villagers to accede to the resumption of mid-day meals. “As per an official order, teachers of the school first tasted the midday meal and then served it to children,” the official said. Around 16 million children in 72,000 schools across Bihar eat the mid-day meal every day.

Europe’s poverty rise

Austerity policies are massively increasing poverty and inequality in the UK and across Europe; damage that will take two decades or more to reverse, according to a new report by Oxfam. The report, titled ‘A Cautionary Tale’ warns that 800,000 children and an extra 1.9 million adults in the UK could be pushed into poverty by 2020. In Europe up to 25 million more people are likely to live in poverty by 2025 – equivalent to the combined population of the Netherlands and Austria. This would bring the number of poor people in Europe to 146 million, almost a third of the population, warns the international agency. It could take up to 25 years to regain the living standards people enjoyed five years ago. Max Lawson, Oxfam's Head of Advocacy, said: “Austerity is making an already bad economic situation far worse in the UK and across large parts of Europe. “Cuts to social security and public services are combining with falling incomes and rising unemployment to create a deeply damaging situation in which millions are already struggling to make ends meet.”

Miss America

Nina Davuluri won the 2014 Miss America pageant on Sunday, becoming the first Indian-American to wear the crown. “I'm so happy this organization has celebrated diversity, and, on this stage tonight, there was so much diversity,” Davuluri told reporters shortly after defeating contestants from 49 other states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. “I'm so proud to be the first Indian Miss America,” the 24-year-old aspiring physician said. The field was narrowed to Davuluri and Miss California, Crystal Lee, the first runner-up. Just before the results were announced, Davuluri said: “We are making history right here as AsianAmericans.” Nina’s victory also means that the top prize has been awarded to Miss New York for the second year in a row.

Concordia lift off

Engineers in Italy have succeeded in setting the cruise ship Costa Concordia upright, 20 months after it ran aground off the island of Giglio. They said that the unprecedented salvage effort ‘reached degree zero [vertical], which was our target’. In the operation, that took all of Monday and most of the night, they used cables and metal water tanks to roll the ship onto a platform. The Costa Concordia capsized in January 2012, killing 32 people. The bodies of two of the victims of the disaster have never been found despite hopes of their recovery during this latest operation. Driving the TUC forward Trade Union Congress

welcomes new chief

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A bus driver from Bradford made history last week as he was elected as the first Muslim and Asian president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). 61-year-old, Mohammad Taj, was elected on Wednesday 11th September to the General Council on the final morning of the 145th Congress and takes over from Lesley Mercer. Taj has worked in public transport since 1974 when he started working for Bradford City Transport as a bus conductor. He first got involved with the Transport and General Workers Union – now part of Unite – when he began to investigate complaints

that Asian workers had to pay a bribe to corrupt union officials and managers before they could get work on the buses. As a result of his work into unjust practices throughout the company, there was a court case and several people went to prison. In 1982 Taj was elected as the T&G’s shop steward at the company, and ten years later became a worker director for the whole of West Yorkshire and sat on the company board. In the late 1980s unions were beginning to look at how they might do more to better represent workers from black and Asian communities, and Taj was elected chair of the T&G’s national race equality conference, and sat on the

executive council of the union. Taj has been on the TUC’s General Council since 2001. In 1995 following the riots in Bradford – which erupted following longrunning tensions between the police and local Asian youths – Taj served as part of the commission set up to look into the underlying causes of the violence. A year later Taj went back to being a bus driver and once again worked on many of the routes serving the towns and cities in West Yorkshire. He is now based in Unite’s Bradford office and is responsible for looking after the interests of the 650 employees who work as cleaners, engineers, clerical staff and drivers for First Group of West Yorkshire.

ELECTED: TUC President Mohammad Taj

Commenting on his election as TUC President, Mohammed Taj said: “I am proud to be the first Muslim and the first Asian President of the TUC. “During my year as President I’m keen to reach out to trade unionists in the Arab world – in places like Tunisia, Egypt and Iraq – where people are living and working in extremely dangerous and unstable situations, and help them build, strong, independent and democratic unions. “Protecting the NHS and campaigning against government policies – which have seen the increasing involvement of the private sector, and where more and more profit is being put before

PUPPY LOVE

patient care – will also be one of my priorities. In the early 1960s my father came to the UK for treatment. He was suffering from TB, and couldn’t afford treatment back in Kashmir where we were living at the time. Quite simply the NHS saved my father’s life. “I’m also keen during my presidential year to highlight the distress being felt by families across the country as people struggle to cope with the fallout from the living standards crisis. As we see the first tentative signs of economic recovery, we must ensure that ordinary people too can share in the rewards that growth will eventually bring.”

Raveena Tandon promotes adoption of homeless animals After recently adopting two dogs who were found struggling in the recent monsoon rains, Raveena Tandon Thadani is teaming up with animal campaigners. Raveena hopes that her support for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, will encourage everyone to follow her example. In the ad, Raveena appears with her beloved dogs Chotu, a “community dog” whom she brought home off the streets, and Cuddles, who was adopted from an animal shelter, next to the words “Puppy Love: Adopt, Don’t Buy!” Raveena also sat down for a video interview with PETA India in which she explains why she was inspired to adopt all five of the dogs with whom she shares her life. “I would rather help an animal in distress rather than just go and buy another dog,” she says. “These strays deserve a chance, and they need our help, they need our love and they need our compassion.” PETA say that every time someone buys a dog from a breeder or a pet shop, a dog in a shelter loses his or her chance at finding a good home. They are keen to make people aware that pedigree dogs, who have been bred for certain physical traits, are susceptible to hip dysplasia, heart defects, epilepsy, eye and ear infections and a host of other ailments. This is not Raveena’s first campaign for PETA India. She previously wore a “bloody” snake-print gown in an ad that pointed out how “wearing exotic skins kills.” Raveena will soon be seen on the silver screen in a Telugu film.

Life Changing

Wakefield Council has successfully turned around the lives of 307 troubled families as part of a ground breaking government scheme. The Council has also now identified 815 of the hardest to help families who will be targeted for intervention by the programme. 722 families are already being worked with and the scheme remains on track to turn around 930 families in Wakefield by 2015. Cllr Maureen Cummings, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It is pleasing to see the programme achieving results so quickly in the district. By supporting all the family members and their issues in an intensive way we are helping to improve the lives of these families and their local communities that may have suffered the effects of their behaviour.

Stars of the future

The annual National Citizen Graduation event returns to Wakefield next week to celebrate the achievements of young people who took part in a wide-ranging activities programme over the summer months. The ceremony, on Friday 20th September at Wakefield Town Hall from 6pm to 9pm, will include the presentation of certificates to the 50plus high achievers signed by the Prime Minister. The National Citizen Service - a Government-funded programme for 16 and 17-year-olds - is run in the district by the Council’s youth development and support service working in partnership with community and voluntary groups the Youth Work Company, Youth Association and Next Generation.

Propylene Glycol is an odourless, colourless chemical that is used in pharmaceuticals such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and cosmetics as well as a flavour enhancer used in the baking of cakes, donuts and other bakery items. It is listed as “generally recognised as safe” (GRAS) for use as a direct food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been used in asthma inhalers and nebulisers since the 1950s.

flavours and use a small battery-powered element to heat ‘e-liquid’. When you inhale, you activate the electronic circuits contained within the electronic cigarette. This initiates the vaporisation process where the liquid is heated, and thus turned to vapour. When this is exhaled, it has the appearance of real smoke but of course, it is still just vapour. The main ingredients are propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, with added flavouring.

What is Vegetable Glycerine?

Food grade vegetable glycerine is 99.7 percent pure with the remaining .03 being water. Vegetable glycerine is sweet but is metabolised differently than sugar and does not raise blood sugar levels. It is found in foods that are advertised to be lower in carbohydrates. Vegetable glycerine is used in the place of alcohol in food extracts and even though it is sweet it does not promote tooth decay and is even used in the treatment of certain skin and gum disease.

Britain’s huge donation Britain is to give £997million to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria over the next three years in a hope to defeat the three killers. Overseas aid minister Justine Greening said the British government would contribute a billion pounds, or £333m a year, for the 2014-2016 funding period. The Geneva-based Global Fund - the world's biggest donor of funds to fight the three infectious diseases - said earlier this month it needs $15 billion (£9.4bn) over the next three years to begin bringing them under control. Britain's pledge, which is dependent on other donors dedicating enough to reach the $15 billion goal, is the second-largest by any government so far. The United States has asked for $1.65 billion a year for the Global Fund in its 2014 budget.

Strike Workers at the Royal Mail postal service will begin voting next week on whether to strike, the Communication Workers Union said on Friday 20th September. Just one week after the government formally launched the firm's privatisation, the CWU has confirmed a strike ballot would be held to ensure the rights of all the workers. Union leaders seeking guarantees on pay and conditions are opposed to the government's plans to sell off a majority stake in Royal Mail through a public listing. In July the CWU rejected a threeyear pay offer. Industrial action is expected by the government and may affect investors' demand for the firm, but Business Minister Michael Fallon said last week that the possibility of strikes would not be allowed to derail the floatation. Royal Mail said in a statement it was very disappointed that the CWU had confirmed the strike ballot.

Education establishments prosper Four of the best 10 universities in the world are in the UK, according to a new international table. A record six British institutions have made it into the top 20 in the latest annual QS World University Rankings. But experts warned that the UK's leading position could be under threat without more funding. The top-ranked UK university is Cambridge, which has slipped down a place to third this year, behind Massachusetts Institute of Technology which was also first last year - and Harvard, both leading US universities. Also in the top 10 were University College London (UCL) in fourth place, Imperial College London in fifth, and Oxford in sixth. The other institutions in the top 10 were all in the United States. HM Revenue and Customs publishes a gallery of its 2013 Most Wanted, and announces the capture of one of the most wanted tax criminal fugitives. One year on since the first list was published the 2013 list includes updated information on the original 20 as well as the addition of 10 more tax fugitives. The new tax fugitives on the Most Wanted list are wanted for a range of crimes including VAT fraud, evasion and money laundering and have a cost to the taxpayer of between £100,000 and £10 million. Anthony Judge, who was wanted for his role in over £350,000 of tax fraud and has been on the run for 10 years, was detained at Heathrow Airport in July as he attempted to enter the UK on a forged passport.

The Government has invested hundreds of millions of pounds in HMRC’s enforcement activities to enable them to pursue tax cheats like these relentlessly. “We hope that the publication of HMRC’s Most Wanted will help get them caught and ensure they are brought to justice.” Biographies and images of the complete list of 30 Most Wanted can be viewed on HMRC's Flickr channel along with the tax fugitive map. The Chancellor discussed the announcement while on a visit to meet some of HMRC’s criminal investigators undergoing self defence training where individuals were learning the skills needed to apprehend and arrest these potentially dangerous criminals.

He is the second of HMRC’s Most Wanted to be captured since the rogues’ gallery, which contains images and information on 30 tax fugitives, was first published. In May, John Nugent was apprehended in the US after the authorities saw HMRC’s Most Wanted list. The gallery has been viewed over 1.5 million times with new intelligence received from the public on the current whereabouts of 17 of the 20 named on the original list. Building on this success, HMRC has also launched an interactive map showing where in the world the tax fugitives are believed to be. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said: “Our message is clear; tax fraud and evasion is illegal and absolutely unacceptable.

The man who caused the death of eight members of a Huddersfield family and escaped from prison last week has been found by police. Shakeil Shazad was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court in 2003 for WANTED: Shakeil Shazad manslaughter following the Birkby House fire which saw the deaths of three generations of a West Yorkshire family. The 33-year-old was released from HMP Sudbury on a work license on the 11th September and did not return. He was found in a hospital in Staffordshire two days later following a man-hunt by West Yorkshire Police Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Lisa Griffin issued the following statement: “Finding Shazad wass a top priority for the Force and we put full resources into tracing his whereabouts. “This man was convicted of eight counts of Manslaughter in relation the house fire at Osbourne Road in Birkby, Huddersfield in 2002. “It is imperative that we found him and place him back behind bars to serve the full sentence for what was a terrible crime. “It claimed the lives of five children and three adults, leaving a family and a community absolutely devastated.” Shazad has been charged with absconding from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire after he failed to return to the facility on Wednesday. He appeared at Burton Magistrates Court on Thursday 12th September following his arrest. HMP Sudbury has come under criticism after it was revealed that more than 100 criminals, including killers, armed robbers and drug dealers, have gone on the run from the Midland open prison in the last four years. However a spokeswoman for the prison issued the following statement: “Prisoners located in open conditions have been rigorously risk assessed and categorised as being of low risk to the public. “Over 96 per cent who abscond are recaptured and returned to custody.”

GUILTY: Qasim Hussain jailed in grooming case

A man, who tried to prevent a young victim from giving evidence in a grooming case, was jailed on Friday 6th September. Qasim Hussain, 20, of Townley Street, Brierfield was previously found guilty of perverting the course of justice after a two-week trial at Burnley Crown Court on Thursday 18th July. For this offence, he was given a two-year sentence. Hussain coerced the victim into travelling to Bradford where she was told to write a letter to say she had made up allegations that she had been abducted and sexually abused at a house on Sackville Street, Brierfield. A second man, Furqan Amjad, 23, of Halifax Road, Brierfield, was jailed for 15 months for the same

offence following the trial on 18th July. He was involved in bombarding the girl with text messages, phone calls and money in an attempt to bribe her against giving evidence. As part of a linked investigation, Amjad’s brother - Mohammed Imran Amjad - was jailed for four years, three months in April 2013 after pleading guilty to three offences of child abduction and one of sexual activity with a child. He was also given a seven-year sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) which prohibits him from contacting any girl under the age of 16 or being in a vehicle with a girl under the age of 16 without express permission from the child’s parent. He must sign the sex offenders’ register and will remain on it for an indefinite period.

Today Qasim Hussain was also given another two-year sentence to run consecutively for supplying a Class A drug and possession with intent to supply a Class A drug. This offence was unrelated to the incident involving the young girl. He was additionally given an eight-month sentence to run concurrently for another count of perverting the course of justice. This relates to him trying to inaccurately change his bail address whilst on bail for the offence relating to the young girl. Detective Chief Inspector Sion Hall said: “I am pleased with the sentence handed to Qasim Hussain, given the ordeal that the young victim was subjected to. “Today’s result is the last

sentencing in a long and complex investigation. “We’ve worked extremely hard with the young victim over a long period of time. It has been extremely traumatic for her and her family and she has shown a tremendous amount of courage and bravery throughout the case. “People who interfere with victims and witnesses of crime – whether through bribes or other means – are committing a very serious offence. We treat these incidents very seriously and I hope that today’s and the previous sentences in this case show just how committed we are to identifying those responsible for these crimes and bringing them to justice.”

Veils in the docks

A Muslim woman has been allowed to appear in a British court as a defendant and enter a plea without removing her full-face veil. The woman, who denied a charge of witness intimidation, had previously been told by Judge Peter Murphy that she would have to show her face to enter a plea so she could be identified. The Londoner, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had argued that she was unable to remove the face covering in the presence of men for religious reasons. A female police officer saw the woman in private at Blackfriars Crown Court in London and swore on oath it was the same woman in the dock.

Fight for independence

Thousands of people marched through the Scottish capital earlier this week calling for independence, a year ahead of Scotland's historic referendum on whether to break away from the United Kingdom. The pro-independence campaign "Yes Scotland" estimated that 20,000 supporters joined the march through Edinburgh, turning the city centre into a sea of blue and white as they waved thousands of Scottish flags, though police said numbers were closer to 8,300. Some of the men were clad in traditional Scottish kilts as they marched up Calton Hill, overlooking the city, to the sound of bagpipes. Alex Salmond, leader of the proindependence Scottish National Party and head of Scotland's regional government, told the crowds they would have ‘the opportunity of a lifetime’ when they vote on 18th September next year.

Q&A with

Ranbir Kapoor Bollywood sensation Ranbir Kapoor will assume the guise of a cheeky chappy in his latest film incarnation as Besharam comes to cinema screens next month. Besharam (Shameless) launches in cinemas on 2nd October 2013 and marks the first ever film to feature Ranbir Kapoor alongside his parents, and screen legends, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Ranbir Kapoor plays ‘Babli’, a street smart, fun-loving, football-playing car mechanic who has seen the dark side of life as one of India’s many desolate orphan children. The worldly-wise Babli learnt at a young age how to survive the trauma of having no one to care for him. He grew up fast in a Delhi orphanage and has devoted his life to helping and mentoring the other children in the shelter. The cheeky and fiercely independent Babli takes as his life motto: “Na Samaan Ka Moh, Na Apmaan ka Bhay”, translated as “No Want for Respect, No Fear of Disrespect” Babli has no sense of right or wrong until he unwittingly hurts the love of his life, Tara (Pallavi Sharda), which leads the character to realise that there is no right way of doing the wrong thing. What prompted you to sign for Besharam? It was several things really. I am a big fan of director Abhinav Kashyap’s work. Abhinav knows how to tell a simple yet very interesting story. This film has it all; it has romance, action and comedy. It tells a simple yet effective story. I was also drawn to my character. It is a very different type of character to play and it allowed me to

express myself in a new and creative way. Were there any particularly special moments whilst making the film? The entire film was a blast to work on. My character ‘Babli’ has very few hang-ups and inhibitions, he more or less does as he wants and so this was fun to portray. Also, I had fun working with my co-stars and my parents. What was it like working with your parents for the first time? It was fantastic working with my parents. I am a great admirer of my father and I’m in awe of my mother. They are both such professionals and great actors. They never once dictated to me during the shooting of this film, in fact I gave them suggestions on how I thought their characters should be portrayed. We had a lot of fun working together and it helped me to overcome a lot of inhibitions. Do you feel pressure to have the same success as your famous parents? Overall, I don’t feel that it has been a hindrance to come from a famous family. I have been exposed to cinema from a very young age and I absolutely love watching my family’s films. I wouldn’t say I have pressure on me to succeed, but it has been a bit of a struggle at times because of who my parents are. There is a ‘celebrity kid’ label attached to me that I have had to overcome to prove myself as an actor and as an individual. Tell us about your character in Besharam? I play a character called ‘Babli’, who is an orphan and petty car thief. He is a guy with no inhibitions; he lives life by his own rules. Babli is a very flamboyant and loud character, but underneath it all he is a good hearted kid. His main priority is to get

money to help the children in the orphanage. It was an amazing experience to play this type of role, as I could take the character to new depths and have fun with it too. Did the film allow you to let loose and have some ‘Besharam’ moments? Of course! There are certain things that I could get away with that I wouldn’t normally be able to. My character is really shameless and so he does some pretty weird and gross things. One example that comes to mind is that in the film my character is obsessed with playing with his chest hair all the time, this isn’t something that I’d normally do in real life! The film has a powerful message about doing good for others. Do you support many charitable causes? I strongly believe that charity comes from within you. You can be charitable wherever you travel to; charity comes from the heart and soul; it is found in the little things we do every day to help someone and make their life a little better. I do support some charities, but I still feel that there is much more I can do and so I intend to support more charities in the future. In Besharam your character loves football. Are you a football fan? I’m a big football fan! I have always loved football from childhood and used to play when I was in college. I am the Indian brand ambassador for Barcelona Football Club and I’ve been lucky enough to see them at different stadiums. In the film I insisted on my character playing football whenever possible! If I wasn’t an actor I would have been a football coach I think. Bollywood recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary. How do you think the industry

has developed? I think it is a very proud moment for the Indian film industry to celebrate such a milestone. I feel honoured to be a part of the Indian film industry. My family has been in the industry for 80 out of the 100 years and this is a wonderful achievement. I think Bollywood is now attracting global audiences in a more engaging way. There is a healthy blend between the typical ‘Masala’ film and mainstream elements. An example I would give is the film Barfi, which was India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. Is there a set format for a successful Bollywood film? There is no set format. People just want good entertainment. A Bollywood film entertains you; it is three hours of music, drama, romance, action and comedy. Who are your role models within the Indian Film Industry? There are so many people I admire. I look up to Amitabh Bachchan. I also think Shah Rukh Khan is a good ambassador for the industry. Do you see yourself making the transition to mainstream/ Hollywood cinema? At the moment I am very happy doing what I’m doing. I think the Indian film industry is booming and is a great thing to be a part of. I truly enjoy my work and the roles I’ve played so far. A good film is often one that takes elements from its own culture and tradition rather than trying to just incorporate a mainstream/Western format. For example in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee took inspiration from his own culture and created a fantastic film.

Mumzy and Nafees then joined in and cut a cake that was kindly organised by the owners of the business. The pair then performed their single, Sazaa, with the whole crowd singing along to the track itself. Just before the night ended Nafees did his now trademark 'Harlem shake' which he has been doing with crowds all across the UK.

Business news

India’s oil minister shies away from crisis India's oil minister shied away from introducing comprehensive energy subsidy cuts, instead calling on his countrymen to embrace car pooling, buses and cycling as well as staggered working hours in a bid to curb fuel consumption. The struggling Asian economy - the world's fourth-largest user of energy - is battling a weak rupee that has increased the price of oil products as

economic growth has halved to 4.4 percent from the 8-9 percent seen in the boom years. Delhi is also seeking to rein in a record current account deficit that is in part fuelled by energy imports. A falling rupee also boosts inflation and the wholesale price index measure of inflation, the benchmark for the country's central bank, rose to a six-month high of 6.1 percent in August. M. Veerappa Moily told a

news conference on Tuesday he hoped to save $5 billion (3 billion pounds) from fuel conservation measures even as he shied away from substantial measures such as raising diesel and other fuel prices as the electoral cycle hots up with polls due to be held by May 2014. "As of now there is no proposal to raise prices," Moily said, referring to diesel subsidy changes.

India, where energy consumption per person is among the lowest in the world, has little room to cut fuel use as it tries to power exports and agriculture. Diesel accounts for more than 40 percent of fuel demand, or around 1.4 million barrels per day, the bulk of which is used by trucks, farmers and industry. The $5 billion savings is part of a campaign outlined earlier this month to save up to $25

billion this year, although the weak Indian currency and rising global oil prices already mean that rupee price hikes for diesel have failed to match the dollar price gains for oil. The government realistically aims to save about $12-15 billion, a source familiar with the plans said after Moily's press conference.

Banging heads together I n the first of a two part series of articles, we look at why concussion in sport is giving the National Football League and the Rugby Football Union a real headache! “The settlement does not represent, and cannot be considered, an admission by the NFL of liability, or an admission that plaintiffs’ injuries were caused by football.” This was the press release following the announcement that the National Football League (NFL) would be paying out $765 million to over 4,500 former players following mediation in the Concussion lawsuit. The deal makes it clear that despite making these payments, the NFL are not accepting liability or admitting that the claimants’ injuries were caused by football. The NFL has been able to sweep the allegations under the carpet without formally conceding any guilt. They have also avoided the airing of any private documents that might have emerged in an open court case illustrating what the NFL may have known about concussion-linked brain problems and more importantly, when. The case against the NFL alleged that it had wilfully misled its players over the long-term impact of repeated brain traumas. As recently as January 2010 the co-chair of the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) committee Dr Ira Casson, contended that: “There is not enough valid, reliable or objective scientific evidence at present to determine whether or not repeat head impacts in professional football will result in long-term brain damage.” Pioneering research on American Footballers published last year by Boston University demonstrated a clear link between repeated concussions and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative disease similar to Alzheimer's in its symptoms – memory loss, irritability,

mood changes, dementia and depression. The research revealed that CTE had been found in 30 former NFL players, who, before they died, had shown symptoms similar to those found in boxers suffering from ‘punch-drunk’ syndrome. The closest sport in the UK to our neighbours across the pond is rugby union. Concussion is the most common injury suffered, with statistics showing one player is concussed in every five Premiership matches. The size and athleticism of players now is considerably greater than when the game turned professional in 1995. The frequency and severity of the contact has increased accordingly. The growing fear now is that concussed players are being allowed to stay on the field or return to the field whilst showing obvious signs of concussion. In a comparable quote to that of Dr Ira Casson, Dr Simon Kemp (RFU Head of Sports Medicine) is quoted recently: “We understand that there is no proven causal relationship between head injuries sustained while playing rugby union and the reported cases of CTE and early onset dementia.” Last month, Dr Willie Stewart discovered the first evidence of CTE in a former rugby union player. Since this case came to light a further 10 potential cases have been presented to the Glasgow neuropathologist. The question now is what impact will Dr Stewart’s research have for the game’s governing body? Will we see a raft of former players come together to issue proceedings against the RFU like in the US or will the RFU take greater steps to educate players about the risks they face by playing on with concussion like the NFL has been forced to do? We at Blacks have a specialist Sports Law Department dealing with all aspects of advising sports professionals and organisations.

$6.6b loan for Pakistan

Pakistan only had enough to cover less than five weeks of imports in it’s State Bank By Anush Ansari anish@asianexpress.co.uk

Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or by email at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

The IMF's Executive Board has approved a $6.6 billion loan for Pakistan to support its program to stabilize the economy and boost growth while expanding its social safety net to protect the poor. The 36-month program under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility aims at bringing down inflation and reducing the fiscal deficit to more sustainable levels. The program also includes measures to help achieve higher and more inclusive growth, in particular through addressing bottlenecks in the energy sector. In a statement, the IMF said the three-year program should help Pakistan rebuild its reserves and prevent a

crisis in the balance of payments. IMF loans generally come with conditions for economic reform and should encourage other donors to step in with more funds. Two top finance ministry officials in Pakistan announced the Fund's approval of a package in August, pending the board's decision and Pakistan's progress on fiscal reforms. The new loan will arrive just in time. As of August, the central bank only had about $5 billion left in foreign currency reserves, enough to cover less than five weeks of imports. The Asian Development Bank, one of Pakistan's major lenders, estimates that Pakistan needs $6 billion to $9 billion to meet its obligations, including about $5 billion in outstanding debt

on an earlier $11 billion IMF loan package. Pakistan averted a balance of payments crisis in 2008 by securing the $11 billion IMF loan. This was suspended two years ago after economic and reform targets were missed. This time around, the government had to fulfill certain conditions set by the IMF before the loan could be approved, including slashing costly subsidies on electricity and sending out notices to 10,000 delinquent taxpayers. Pakistan has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the world. The IMF wants it to do more to tackle rampant tax evasion by the wealthy elite. Pakistan gets $540 million immediately, and the rest will be disbursed after regular reviews of the program, the Fund said.

Pluggin it! Remember that strange, futuristic BMW with the blue lights that Tom Cruise drove in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol? Well, it’s an electric car concept that BMW has been showing in various forms at auto shows the past two years and finally BMW has used the IAA 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to finally unveil its plug-in hybrid sports car – the BMW i8. Joining the BMW i3 electric car that was launched in July, the BMW i8 is designed to embody the same “i” values, with an uncompromised drive experience from a car that's firmly looking towards the future. Like the i3, the i8 features a carbonfibre reinforced plastic passenger cell to provide lightweight strength, with the distinctive body panels making up the futuristic external design. But a sports car is more than looks, it's about performance and the BMW i8 has a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. There's a three-cylinder 231hp combustion engine to drive the rear wheels, as well as a 96kW electric motor to drive the front wheels, with lithium-ion batteries. The electric motor provides an acceleration boost to the combustion engine, meaning the BMW i8 will get

up to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. There's a limited 155mph top speed from a combined output of 362bhp. These figures might not turn heads in the world of sports cars, but it's achieved with emissions of 59g/km of CO2 and a stated 113mpg fuel efficiency. You can drive up to 22 miles on the electric motor alone at speeds of up to 75mph and the battery will charge on overrun, as you'd expect from a hybrid. BMW tells us that you can charge the battery to 80 per cent in 2 hours from a mains charger. There are a number of driving modes, from the pure electric through to sports. In the normal "comfort" mode, BMW say you'll get 310 miles from a full petrol tank and fully charged battery. Of course, having a hybrid arrangement, you'll not find yourself facing a lengthy recharging once the battery runs flat. Inside the BMW i8 is futuristic, with a fully digital instrument display and integration with the ConnectedDrive system, so you'll be connected to the world and your smartphone, with all the mod cons. The BMW i8 will be available to order from September 2013, with deliveries expected in July 2014. It will cost you £99,845.

Honda reveals first details of its Civic Type R

Tur bo ch ar ge d Honda has revealed that the hotly anticipated new Civic Type R will be powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2litre engine and will deliver at least 280 PS. The car has already been put through its paces by Honda’s WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini and a film demonstrating its storming performance and handling on the Nurburgring has been put up for viewing. Last year Honda confirmed ambitions for the Civic Type R to become the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car still faces a further two years of development before going on sale in 2015 however, on-track testing has already begun. Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe, said: “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.” Honda has also confirmed the Civic Tourer will achieve impressively low CO2 emissions from just 99g/km and an outstanding 74.3mpg when powered by Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine. The British built Civic Tourer builds on the strengths of the hatchback model, offering class leading boot space and practicality and will go on sale in early 2014. "For me, the strength of the car is the synergy of functionality, versatility, and dynamic design. As a European development team, we’re passionate and proud about what we’ve achieved”, said Adrian Killham, Large Project Leader for Civic Tourer. Record sales for 13-plate The 13-plate, introduced in March, has become the biggest selling new car plate since 2008, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The 13-plate had already clocked up 1,115,459 registrations by the end of July, with a full month still to go, the highest sale of a new plate since the 08plate in 2008.

“We have seen a strong performance from the new car market throughout 2013, with the number of cars registered increasing in July for the 17th successive month,” said Mike Baunton, SMMT interim chief executive. “Now we have evidence of consistent growth, we have raised our forecast for 2013 new car registrations to

2.216 million units, an increase of over 8% on last year. In line with this positive trend, we expect the new 63-plate to be very successful and for September registrations to provide a similar peak to that seen in March.” Traditionally the March and September plate changes collectively account for a third of all new car purchases.

The Drivers Package (£2,760) de-restricts the top speed to 186 mph and secures the customer a place on an AMG ‘Power and Passion’ event so they can learn how to handle their car on the racetrack. Carbon Fibre can also further enhance the look of the car with the addition of the AMG Exterior Carbon Package (£5,000) while the AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system can be added for £7,090.

Women pack powerful purchasing power, representing a huge market opportunity for car dealers. This year however, at the Women's World Car of the Year awards the Ford Fiesta 1.0l Eco-Boost came out on top as the most economic choice. The judges panel consisted of respected published and specialist women motoring writers and had the task of primarily reflecting the preferences of women buyers through the ballot box of women motoring writers from around the world. The judging categories had a

three-tier voting system to ensure all angles were covered in that particular category. The Family Car category, for instance, included childfriendliness, storage space and value-for-money and individually. Chief Judge, Sandy Myhre of New Zealand, said that judges were asked to supply their own short list from 2013 model year cars they've tested. From there, a short list was formed to determine the finalists and from the finalist list judges choose their supreme winner and the podium finishers. She said The presentation of the trophies and certificates will this year take place in London at the beginning of October.

Panesar’s back THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS WITH THE BIGGEST NAMES

rn tu re al n io at n e ak m to t se r le ow b d Englan By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After his controversial actions away from the sport, and six months of being overlooked by selectors, Monty Panesar has been included in England’s squad for the Winter Ashes tour of Australia. The left arm, spin bowler impressed during his loan spell at Essex last season and now hopes to concentrate on his on-field performances. With 48 test matches to his name, and 164 wickets, the Sikh bowler could prove a vital instrument in England’s performances over the Christmas period and offers an alternative approach to the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Panesar hasn’t been included in a test squad since his notorious actions at a Brighton nightclub earlier this year when he urinated on a bouncer. However, national selector, Geoff Miller, is confident the left-armer is back on the right track and ready to once again be involved in the England setup. He said: “There's a very strong management in that side to help all aspects of it. “He's appreciated he's made errors and he's very sure that those errors are behind him now.

RETURN: Monty is back in the fold for the Winter Ashes

“He appreciated the reason why he was sent home, accepted that and knuckled down. He's been selected because that's been rectified. “He's an experienced international player and it's up to him to actually produce the goods for us. He's very prepared to let his bowling do the talking for him, so I'm prepared to accept that.” Speaking about his return to the team, Monty said: “Where England are concerned, I’ve always had the same mindset: I’ve got to make sure I’m bowling well, my rhythm is good and I am equipped to deal with any situation. “You never know when the next opportunity might be around the corner, and if that chance comes, I need to be able to grab it.”

CHOSEN: England selector, Geoff Miller, believes Monty’s errors are now behind him

The Winter Ashes tour will officially begin on 21st November with the first test held at Brisbane, and the fifth finishing on the 7th January. Following that, a five-round ODI series will take place between 12th January and 26th January, before concluding with three T20 games, staged from the 29th January to 2nd February.

This year the lineups are stronger than ever with hundreds of nominees in

With over 800 applications for nominations for the various Awards, the final list is very impressive and competition will be fierce. “The Asian Football Awards have been created to recognise and reward Asians in football in the UK. Indian tennis ace Somdev Devvarman returned to the ATP singles top 100 last week as he aims to revive his career following a shoulder injury. The 28-year-old was ranked at a career best 62 in 2011 but soon picked up a recurring injury which prevented him from continuing his rise up the standings. R e c e n t l y, Devvarman has reached the second rounds of the US Open and the ATP TENNIS: Somdev Devvarman is back in the top 100 after almost two years

500 event in Washington via qualifiers. His best achievement to date on the ATP World Tour has been reaching the finals of the Chennai Open in 2009, as a wild card entry. Also making tremendous progress was Yuki Bhambri, who shot up an amazing 190 places to 287th following a superb performance at the Taiwan Challenger, where he ended runner-up after qualifying for the main draw. In the doubles, US Open champion Leander Paes (fifth), Rohan Bopanna (seventh) and Mahesh Bhupathi (tenth) r e m a i n e d unchanged in top ten.

“Our aim is to see a steady stream of Asian footballers making their debuts at league clubs across the UK…it’s only a matter of time before this is a reality as there are so many talented players on the peripherals of making it,” Mr Rihal added. Liverpool football club’s doctor, Zaf Iqbal, will be one nominee looking to win a prestigious honour for the second year running after being shortlisted for recognition at the prestigious

Asian Football Awards. Dr Iqbal was the recipient of the first ever Behind the Scenes - Medical Award at last year's inaugural ceremony and this year he could repeat the feat. Also nominated from the Merseyside giants are Abu Nasir, ethnic minorities representative on the LFC supporters' committee, and Academy youngster Yan Dhanda, named in the Up and Coming Player category. The AFA 2013 ceremony

will be a star-studded event once again with dignitaries from the world of football as well as a number of prominent celebrities and footballers. With an anticipated audience of over 500 attending, The Asian Football Awards 2013 promises to be a fantastic opportunity to witness inspirational Asians in football, first hand. KHAN Vs

Mayweather? By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Amir Khan may be facing the tough test of World Welterweight champion Devon Alexander in December yet his focus could be further in the future if reports are correct. The Boltonian boxer tweeted his acceptance of a challenge from Floyd Mayweather Snr last week

after the boxing manager said he would like to see Amir Khan take on his son next. Speaking after Mayweather Jnr comfortably defeated Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas, the former boxer issued the challenge which has not been turned away by the Brit. Despite questions surrounding Khan’s dedication to training, due to his celebrity lifestyle, the

former world champion assured his work ethic was still as strong as ever, submitting to the rigours of a three-month training camp prior to his December bout. Knowing that victory over Alexander would bring with it the possibility of a megamillions super-fight against Floyd Mayweather; Khan may now be looking to restore his boxing career.

BOOM! but this was not the case. The notable rounds for Dickens were rounds three and four where he produced perfect shots to the body, the head and five punch combinations. Jazza was so dangerous at this point, his punches landing were clearly and cleanly seen by the judges not to mention all the partisan fans. Again these rounds were Jazza’s best work and so convincing. Galahad tried to slow the pace and pick Dickens off at range, which he did do successfully on occasions. By round five both Galahad and Jazza went toe-to-toe and this was the telling point of the fight as, from my viewpoint, it was brilliant to see two supreme athletes throwing caution to the wind and having a go to prove who was the master of the other. At this point Jazza Dickens started to look shabby but again the rounds were close and in favour of the Liverpool man. I felt that in rounds six and seven Kid

CONQUERED: As predicted, Kid finishes Jazza in the tenth

Galahad’s timing was slightly off and he had a hint of frustration as he realised it wasn’t going to be an easy nights work. By now Jazza’s face was marked and bruised up with blood was leaking from his face. However that did not bother Dickens one bit, he was determined to get that belt. And boy was he still dangerous as he caught Kid Galahad with a heavy overhand left flush on his head, which sent a spray of sweat through the air. Now by the eighth round the fight was so close for both fighters that I personally had it a draw. The ninth round was a fantastic round of boxing for Kid Galahad. He picked off Jazza Dickens with ease at range, his footwork, his balance was pure boxing artistry. If Carlsberg did boxing this would be it. It was like Naseem Hamed revisited. The ease he subdued Dickens with was pure magic, but then out of the blue the referee jumped in and stopped the fight.

He took a point off the Kid for pushing and holding Jazza Dickens’ head down in a clinch. To be noted, the referee had previously given the Kid a couple of warnings for the same misdemeanour. I thought this was crazy for the referee to do this at such a major point in the fight. All the hometown fans were enraged and thought the fight fix was in. All of a sudden from a close fight Jazza Dickens was now in front by two rounds. One could see an upset on the cards of the hometown favourite. Everybody was nervous, promoter Mick Hennessy, Channel 5 and the hometown crowd as the round ended. The only one who was cool, calm and collected was master trainer Dominic Ingle. It was Ingle’s cool calm demeanour that was transferred to and absorbed by Kid Galahad as he sat in the corner during the rest period following round nine. Ingle told him “you must line Dickens up and let your hands go, you go out there now and finish this kid, simple. Pace yourself now, pick your shots it is tight. You have 3 rounds to do it in. All he (Jazza Dickens) has to do is to stay on his feet and he wins this fight. You have to go out there now and put it on him.” If that was not motivating enough then I am the Popes

daughter! And boy did Kid Galahad step up. The expression on his face was not one of defeat, it was of lets go to work now. He did just that. The Kid upped the pace of the fight, like a leopard homing in on its prey. Just like a rocket he shot straight on to Jazza Dickens, throwing devastating crunching punches from all angles into Jazza’s face. By this time Jazza’s face was a pulp of red mess, he was visibly tired unable to stop the onslaught. The pace, the punches, the timing were so ferocious. Jazza tried to rally but the Kid was not about to let him off the hook this time with the fight in the balance and slipping away. Galahad lined Jazza up and boom! With unbelievable power and skill the Kid delivered his WMD (weapon of mass destruction) and boy it blasted Jazza into oblivion with a flash bang effect. I wouldn’t be surprised if the UN nuclear inspectors come knocking on Kid Galahad’s door after this. The Kid switched stance

and threw one almighty perfect left hand shot knocking Jazza out. If ever the Kid needed a punch that was the one and it took the fight right out of the judges hands delivering him the coveted Lord Lonsdale belt and the British title. The hometown fans were ecstatic as Jazza was knocked to the canvas. The referee called halt to the contest in round ten as Dickens was clearly in no condition to continue. His corner team knew the fight was over for him and threw in the towel for good measure. The victorious Kid said after: “I knew I was behind on the scorecards. I knew he was going to come out fast in the first few rounds. “He came out like a bull, but I just knew when I find my range, my distance – boom!” What a great fight for two quality fighters, a great fight for Channel 5’s TV ratings and most of all a great night for the fight fans. This is not to say that Galahad did not fight well but from Sheffield’s fight favourite Barry my viewpoint the Kid was too cautious Awad, aka Kid Galahad, as predicted, in the first couple of rounds and one won in devastating fashion the British could see he was totally focussed on Super Bantam Weight Championship landing the perfect shot.
