Snooker club loses licence over sex and drug abuse claims A snooker club in Birmingham run by two Asian brother-in-laws has had it licence shredded following allegations of the site being used for child sexual exploitation and drug-dealing. Birmingham Council revoked the Big Break Snooker Club’s licence following an uncontested hearing on 20th May. Big Break managers, Qumar Zaman and Hissam Khaliq, did not attend or present any evidence at the hearing. The club has so far been unavailable for comment. The venue has also seen numerous reports of robberies and thefts. Police said a number of continuing investigations were connected to the Big Break Snooker Club in Coventry Street, Digbeth. Officers found weapons, drugs and used condoms at the Coventry Street club during a raid in March. The city council's licensing committee heard evidence of ‘widespread’ drug use and was told that rooms had been used to abuse children. It voluntarily closed its doors in March and on 1st May West Midlands Police was granted a three-month closure order at the city's magistrates' court. At the time, Inspector Will O'Connor said inquiries had shown a ‘pattern of young women or girls entering the club with older men’. He said: “Information we uncovered suggests the girls had gone on to spend time in private rooms with the men where they were exposed to alcohol and drugs and groomed for sexual activity.” Inspector O'Connor said

Liar Liar Lying to avoid getting in trouble, travelling on the train without buying a ticket and stealing are just some of the things the region has admitted to, a study has revealed. YouGov researchers polled over 2,000 people and when asked what bad deeds they have ever done, it found that almost half (48 per cent) of adults from Yorkshire and the Humber have told a lie to save their own bacon and one in four (25 per cent) even confessed to hopping on a train without having bought a ticket. The lure of a £20 note on the floor in a public area with no one else around is enough to tempt over six out of 10 (66 per cent) respondents to keep it for themselves, with only six per cent taking it to the nearest police station, which is what the law expects you to do, and 14 per cent donating it to charity. 18 per cent of respondents from Yorkshire and the Humber admit to stealing from a shop and almost one in 10 (nine per cent) have got someone else in trouble as well as themselves. Borrowing clothes before asking was high on the list with 13 per cent of people fessing up to it, and more than one in 10 (16 per cent) having lied

Despite these results, 74 per cent of respondents said they consider themselves to be trustworthy and sixty-six per cent claimed to be honest, whilst over two thirds stated they saw themselves as kind (70 per cent) and just under half said they saw themselves as nice (45 per cent). Helen Douglas, spokesperson from The York Dungeon, which commissioned the research to celebrate the launch of its brand new show, Rascals and Rogues, said: “Even though many of those questioned felt they were trustworthy and honest, in truth they admitted to stealing, travelling without buying a ticket and lying to get out of trouble. “Over half (51 per cent) of respondents admit to telling between one and five little white lies a day. A person telling five lies a day would add up to a whopping 1,825 lies a year!” Helen added: “Rascals and Rogues is our new interactive half term show and we wanted to see how trustworthy and honest the residents of Yorkshire and the Humber really are when pitted against some of history’s most notorious characters such as Samuel Gregory and Dick Turpin. “The survey has confirmed we can all be rascals at times but there are still some honest people out there.”

Councillor Judith Chapman has become the city’s 122nd Lord Mayor of Leeds after unanimous support from members of all parties at the council’s annual meeting this week. Taking over the role from the previous incumbent Cllr David Congreve, Cllr Chapman will be accompanied during her time in office through 2015/2016 by her husband Alan, whom she married in 1977. Since 2006, Judith has represented the Weetwood ward as a Liberal Democrat city councillor and born in Leeds, was brought up in the Roundhay area. During her time as a councillor, Judith, who currently lives in Chapel Allerton, has previously chaired the adult social care scrutiny board and until this month, the children’s and families scrutiny board.

To be president of one organisation is enough work for most people yet for Niaz Mahmud Faysal, his work within two Bradford College societies earned him special recognition at the annual Higher Education Awards held last week. 18-year-old clinches police ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award

A teenager from Bradford, who gives up his own time every week to help fight crime in the city, has been commended with a prestigious accolade at the annual West Yorkshire Policing Awards. 18-year-old Hishaam Mohammed, from Bradford, may currently be studying ICT and Business at Bradford College yet it is in his position as a police support volunteer that he most feels at home. Last week, the determined student picked up the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award from Chief Superintendent Simon Atkin, for his continued support to officers in Bradford. From March 2014 through to the end of last year, Hishaam attended 40 events, totalling 183 hours of voluntary work and was selected as one of three finalists for the awards ceremony. Upon hearing his name called out, he says it was a ‘big surprise’ and one that will only motivate him to continue the work. “When I first got a call to say I had been nominated I was in college and I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “On the night of the awards there were two other volunteers as well who had done some amazing work so I was sure I wouldn’t win. “When they read out my name it came as a big surprise but it was a great feeling.” Hishaam is now applying to study Psychology and Criminology at university as he hopes to pursue a professional career in the police, “From a young age I have always had an interest in the police, and growing up I used to watch all the police programmes,” he continued.

An aid worker volunteer from Bradford has returned from his latest mission in Nepal, describing the trip as ‘eye-opening’ and one that needs more support from around the world. 28-year-old Salman Malik, travelled out to the earthquakehit country on 28th April as part of a 12-man convoy from the Humanity First charity. At least 8,000 people died in the 8.2 magnitude quake last month whilst at least 65 others were killed when a second earthquake hit just days later. Mr Malik had undergone disaster response training prior to his departure and says as soon as he got a call asking if he was able to travel, he ‘couldn’t say no’. “I had done all the courses for this type of situation and I knew from previous experiences that Nepal was not a rich country and that they would not have the resources in place to recover quickly from a disaster of this magnitude,” he explained. “When I was asked about going I didn’t hesitate to say yes because I just wanted to help in whatever way I could. Due to my logistics background I was put in a role to help the medical teams in what was an eye-opening experience.” Working alongside the

Ahmadiyya Sangh Nepal charity, Mr Malik’s 12-day expedition involved providing medical assistance to more than 1,000 people in some of the worst affected areas including the villages of Batase and Tinmane. He says he remembers the smell of ‘burning flesh’ as he arrived in the country as the bodies of those who died in the quake were taken to the local temple.

“The most common problems I saw in the medical tents were shortness of breath, chronic injures and most of all psychological trauma. People were just too scared to return home.” “The sights and smells when we arrived were completely new to me,” Mr Malik explained. “The smell of burning flesh was very noticeable as we drove to our accommodation. “There were people just ‘living in the street’ due to the fear of aftershocks causing further damage to buildings. People were just too scared to return home.” Mr Malik returned to the UK on 10th April and has continued

fundraising for the charity’s earthquake appeal. “My experience out there made me realise the real difference between what we have here and what we take for granted compared to what little people have elsewhere, regardless of disasters,” he said. “I come from Pakistan myself and have seen people struggle to find shelter and food but it was a

Describing the experience, Solly recalled his first visit to London and says his look inside the palace will stay with him forever. “For me it is the experience of a lifetime. I remember the first time I went down to Buckingham Palace in 1976 to see the building and take pictures outside the gates. “Last week, I went inside that same palace and saw what was on the other side. What an honour it was. “For Maryam and myself, the 20th May will always be a date which means

Not just the leader of the UK but the whole Commonwealth.” Solly received his invitation last month from the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Ingrid Roscoe, for the work he has done in the local community. guests. Concluding the day’s events was the traditional delivery of curry to residents in the streets surrounding the mosque which has been done for the past four years since the Masjid opened. NADA secretary, Nazim Ali, explained why it was so important to interact with people of all backgrounds. “Many of the people who live on the streets around the Masjid are of Eastern European origin so by delivering food to these homes we were demonstrating that our event was not only for Muslims but for the whole community,” he said.

“NADA has organised this highly successful annual parade for the last 16 years to spread the message of peace, love and harmony whilst celebrating diversity and actively promoting tolerance.” In addition to the thousandman march, a simultaneous event for women only was held at the Girlington Community Centre in which almost 500 people attended. Nazim added: “Such events demonstrate the need for greater tolerance and understanding amongst diverse religious groups, particularly as there are so many stereotypes, ignorance and misunderstandings in the media. “Our message is quite clear: our similarities are a source for strength for us all irrespective of whichever faith we follow as we all share the universal principles of love, peace and purity of intention.”

During 2014, the SAHF’s diabetes campaigners delivered 11 grassroots education campaigns to a diversity of South Asian communities in seven UK cities where diabetes is

myths and misconceptions about the disease and treatments. When they announced that Dr Patel – who is Chair of the South Asian Health Foundation’s Cardiovascular Disease Working Group – and his SAHF colleagues had been awarded the Diabetes Team of the Year title, the judges said: “In early 2014, the South Asian Health Foundation extended its South Asian Community Health Education and Empowerment programme to include South Asians diagnosed with diabetes. “This impressive project targeted a high-risk population in seven major cities in the UK and is breaking down cultural barriers by taking important diabetes education out into the communities – to schools,

community centres and places of worship, embedding health ambassadors in schools and recruiting local pharmacists as champions. They are achieving powerful attitudinal changes in areas of significant educational need.” Dr Patel stresses that a ‘one size fits all’ approach would not work for the UK’s highly-diverse population of South Asian origin, which includes Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities, with their different cultural, religious and dietary traditions. The health advice must be tailored accordingly, and issues that have arisen include whether or not medication can be taken during periods of fasting.

WAKE UP: A special performance of Sleeping Beauty aims to unite cultures across Yorkshire

Fundraising campaign aims to bring Sleeping Beauty to life

Yorkshire based arts charity, South Asian Arts UK (SAA-uk), is asking for help to unite East and West and bring a fairy-tale to life with an Indian inspired performance of Sleeping Beauty. SAA-uk is hoping to raise £5,000 in order to create a unique production of the world renowned fairy tale through the use of Indian classical dance and shadow puppetry, helping young people aged four and

upwards showcase their skills and entertain a wider audience. The project gives young people the opportunity to take to the famous stage at the West Yorkshire Playhouse as part of its Open Season and will take place on 23rd July. It hopes to bridge the gap between the two different cultures that it unites. The initiative is being led by Seetal Kaur, daughter of SAA-uk’s Managing

Director, Keranjeet. Funding for the venue, performers costs and some of the rehearsal time has already been secured, but an extra £5,000 is required for the final rehearsal hours, costumes and lighting. SAA-uk requested funding earlier in the year to support this project, but they were rejected. Now committed to raising funds themselves, they have until the 23rd June. Despite these setbacks the show has already benefited from the expertise of others. Director Jonnie Khan and professional dance teachers Aditi Sen and Santosh Menon have all helped put the show together. Seetal Kaur said: “Storytelling and mythical tales have deep roots in the ancient traditions of Indian

classical dance so it made perfect sense to interpret a well-known fairy-tale when we were deciding to do something a bit different. “This project helps gives young people of all ages the opportunity to showcase their skills and bring a fresh concept to new audiences. “The performance is all about bringing the different art forms into the 21st century and we want to give people of all ages the opportunity to interact with fairy-tales, Indian classical dance and shadow puppetry in their own way. A team of cyclists from across Bradford’s mosques jumped on their bikes for a unique fundraiser last week, taking in the sites of the city’s Masjids in aid of charity. Dressed in yellow, the group set off from the Madni Masjid before calling in at nine separate places of worship who had all signed up to join in with the challenge. Raising funds for Marie Curie Hospice – this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal, the group raised more than £3,000 through their efforts. Treasurer at the West Bowling Islamic Society, Rifaqat Ali, says he has a personal affection with the hospice after his father was cared for there previously, after suffering from cancer. Upon his father’s passing, Mr Ali says he wanted to do something to give back to the hospice and the community who had given his whole family ‘amazing care and support’.

“Over the last four years, we have been raising funds in our mosques for a number of charities including the Marie Curie Hospice,” he explained. “Each year we have collected around four-to-five-hundred pounds but this year we thought we would step it up a bit and get other mosques and members involved. “We have previously done cycling challenges and have the bikes available so this time we decided to ride between the mosques in Bradford and get more people on their bikes as well. “Nine mosques in total opted in and we were able to raise a fantastic sum of money.” Mr Ali added that this would only be the first of many future cycling challenges and has plans to increase the fundraising target to the tens of thousands next year. “We are already looking at ways of making this event bigger and have committed to the ‘pay for a day’ scheme next year,” he continued. “It costs more than £5,000 a day to run the hospice. We are hoping to raise enough funds through similar challenges

next year to pay for two days over Eid in 2016 and are calling upon the community to help us achieve this.” Following their latest event, cyclists from the Madni Masjid, in West Bowling, presented officials from the Marie Curie Hospice with a cheque totalling £3244.15. Sharon Link, fundraiser at the hospice thanked the group for their support and explained how important fundraising was to ensure the continuous day-to-day running of the charity. “This is a fantastic amount raised by the cyclists and will support 164 hours of nursing care in the Bradford area,” she said. “Marie Curie is here for people living with any terminal illness, and their families, and all our services are provided free of charge. “We can’t do this without the support of our local community to whom we are extremely grateful. I would love to hear from other local people who would like to organise their own events to raise funds for us with the support of the Bradford Hospice Fundraising team.”

Thornbury Barracks reopens Road works finally disappear as roundabout development completed A major road improvement scheme at Thornbury Barracks roundabout in Leeds is now complete after ten months of developments. The project, which has affected traffic for almost a year, has been carried out at the roundabout where the A647 meets the B6154 to improve access on the primary road link between Leeds and Bradford. Costing £3.4million, the scheme has been designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve accessibility, road safety, bus journey time reliability and connectivity on one of the busiest road sections in the city. Initial work began in July 2014 and was funded by Leeds City Council through the Department for

Transport’s Local Pinch Point bidding process. The improvements carried out include: creating three lanes running through the middle of the roundabout in both main directions, traffic signals on all arms of the roundabout, reconfiguration of lanes, provision of pedestrian and cycling facilities, infill of the existing subway, upgrading of bus stops and street lighting improvements. The final minor elements of the scheme in terms of road markings and new signage are now being put in place by contractors. Leeds City Council executive member for transport and economy Councillor Richard Lewis said: “We

are delighted that this improvement project at the Thornbury Barracks roundabout is now complete as it will make a major difference to access and safety on one of the key roads in the city connecting Leeds and Bradford. “It has been a lengthy project to carry out so I would like to thank everyone for their patience and would ask for that to continue a little longer while the new road system settles down in the coming weeks.” Colas Ltd Business Manager for Leeds, Michael Holmes, whose business is contracted to work on the construction, added: “This project presented significant logistical obstacles that had to be overcome to ensure a safe and practical delivery whilst working in a high traffic environment on one of the major arterial routes between Leeds and Bradford.”

Bradford musicians head to Dubai A group of ten DJs from across Leeds and Bradford will be flying out to Dubai this summer as they join some of the biggest names in music in an attempt to smash an official Guinness World Record. On Friday 31st July, music will take over the prestigious Marina Yacht Club in Dubai as a non-stop DJ rally takes place with up to 500 professionals spinning discs over three days. Amongst the star names in attendance, such as David Guetta, Tiesto and Bob Sinclair, will be Keighley music promoter, Saby Khan. Real name Sabir Hussain, the music enthusiast was selected by chief organiser of the event, Nadeem Chaudhry – of World Top DJs, to be one of the judges after successfully working in the country previously. A Bradford off-licence owner has been fined hundreds of pounds and ordered to carry out 48 hours of community service after being found guilty of possession with intent to supply illegal cigarettes and tobacco. 37-year-old Osman Sanger, of Polandia Off-Licence, was found to have 22,000 illicit cigarettes alongside 650 grams of illicit hand rolling tobacco

concealed within his store’s ceiling on North Parade. He was ordered to pay £600 toward costs plus a £60 victim surcharge and serve 48 hours community service, following his prosecution at Bradford Magistrates Court on Tuesday 19th May. Following an initial complaint in 2014, a Trading Standards officer carried out a test purchase of the illegal products when he sold a 50g

pouch of Golden Virginia hand rolling tobacco for £2.50 - a far lower price than the recommended retail value. The product did not bear any of the statutory health warnings, ‘Smoking Kills’ or ‘Smoking seriously harms you and others around you’ which is an offence under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act 1987, and so the matter was further investigated. Officers introduced themselves and carried out a search of the premises where they found the tobacco concealed within the void above a suspended ceiling located towards the rear of the shop. The tobacco was subsequently seized and some were later confirmed to be counterfeit. Councillor Bill Urry, of the

West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee, said: “The illegal sale of tobacco in communities enables and encourages young children to buy it cheaply. “I would like to thank members of the public for reporting illegal sales and encourage everyone to continue doing so to reduce the harm caused by tobacco in our communities.” David Lodge, Head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, added: “Our team is dedicated to tackling the trade in illicit tobacco and we’re dealing with every complaint we receive. “Young people are often targeted due to the low cost of these products and smokers are encouraged to keep up the habit. Traders in illegal tobacco need to know that we will make no exceptions and there are no signs of us slowing down.”

Healthwatch report on Bradford’s A&E department Healthwatch Bradford and District, the local independent watchdog for health and social care, has published a report into patient’s experiences of using the Accident and Emergency Department at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The Healthwatch team visited the department for a twelve-hour shift in December 2014, and gathered the views and experiences of patients and their families as well as making observations about how well the service was running. Andrew Jones, manager of Healthwatch Bradford and District, says: “When the team visited A&E, we saw for ourselves the pressures that the department is under and how hard staff at the hospital work to provide excellent care. Most people we spoke to were very positive about the attitude of staff throughout the department. “However waiting times were a major issue with nearly a third of those who took part in our survey saying these were very poor, and many others saying they were not told about how

long they would have to wait. “We witnessed particular difficulties late in the day with A&E unable to admit very sick people from treatment bays into the hospital which caused the flow of patients through A&E to slow. “Patients told us they were not given any information about what was happening and this caused anxiety amongst waiting patients.” Locally and nationally there has been a campaign to encourage people to ‘choose well’ and reduce pressure on A&E departments by using alternative services when they are not seriously ill. Healthwatch found that when they visited the department, the majority of patients they spoke to had come to A&E because they had been referred there from another service such as NHS 111 or their GP surgery. “Very few people we spoke to could be said to be using A&E ‘inappropriately’ as most had sought advice before attending, or they had an emergency situation like a road accident or

had been brought by ambulance because of a suspected heart attack,” said Andrew Jones. Healthwatch shared their findings with the Trust earlier this year, and they welcomed the insights which will help them in ongoing plans to improve the Accident and Emergency Department. “We’re pleased that the Trust is taking patient feedback seriously and looking to make improvements at the Accident and Emergency Department. Their response indicates that they are already implementing some of our recommendations, such as giving patients more information about waiting times and their progress through the department. A number of our other recommendations drawn from patient feedback will be addressed when the Trust refurbishes the A&E department, planned for summer 2015. “Healthwatch has a good relationship with the Trust and we’ll continue to work with them to secure a better experience for everyone who relies on their services.”

Many people say they would give the ‘shirt off their back’ to help a worthy cause yet one Leeds resident is going that extra mile this month as she gives the hair off her head in a fundraiser for charity. 24-year-old solicitor Jazz Kaur, from Armley, will be losing her dark locks on Thursday 28th May, as she hopes to raise money for vulnerable children affected by the disastrous earthquake in Nepal. More than 8,000 people died as a result of the 8.1magnitude quake that hit the South Asian country in late April, whilst thousands more were injured and millions affected. After seeing images of the relief efforts, Jazz says she decided she wanted to do something to help and opted for the sponsored head shave as a quirky alternative to the usual fundraisers. “Everyone who knows me knows that I am quite extreme so whatever I was going to do I was always going to do to the fullest,” she said. “The way I have to look at it is that it’s only a haircut at the end of the day and it is for such a worthy cause. “I don’t think it has quite hit me yet that I will soon have no hair but when I look at myself in the mirror and

I’m bald, that’s probably when it will fully sink in.” Jazz’s inspiration behind the fundraiser is her cousin Christopher who recently completed the London Marathon after months of training. Admitting that such a physical task would be ‘out of the question’, she hopes her own ‘hair sacrifice’ will be enough to raise awareness and funds for children in Nepal. “People need to be aware of what is actually going on in Nepal,” she added. “It is one of the poorest countries out there and I think that we have a responsibility as people, to lend a hand where possible. “I come from a deprived background myself but I had the right support in my life

Masjid runners raise £15,000 Fundraisers lace up running shoes for first park run Earlier this month, runners of all ages and abilities were out in force in Leeds as they took part in a testing charity challenge in aid of a soon-tobe developed mosque. Around 100 members of Beeston’s Muslim community donned their running gear on Saturday 2nd May to complete the first ever charity run for the New Abu Huraira Masjid. Located on the corner of Hardy Street and Lodge Lane, the development is set to open later this year and has so far seen more than £1million pledged to aid its construction. A further £15,000 was raised through last Sunday’s event and for one of the race’s organisers, Amjid Hussain, it was a ‘fantastic total from a fantastic day’.

“The turnaround time of this event from its initial planning stage to the run day was next to nothing so to raise so much money is a fantastic achievement,” he said. “We had runners from fiveyears-old up to runners in their seventies so it really was an event the whole community could get involved in. “After the run members also got the chance to have a tour around the new site, before a raffle was drawn where one lucky person won an Umrah trip.” Amongst the many runners on the day were five-yearolds, Mustafa Mahboob and Aiman Karim, who both completed one-and-a-half miles after signing up to take part in the project. The final construction cost

of the New Abu Huraira Masjid is estimated to be around £2.5 million with the next phase of the development seeing the doors and dome fitted prior to Ramadan. Once completed, the site will provide a community hall on the ground floor and three upper floors for prayer and other amenities, including: ablution and wash facilities, a conference room and a kitchen. Amjid added: “Every penny we raise through projects such as this run goes directly to the cost of building this Masjid. “If you could donate any amount to the cause it would be massively appreciated and help so many people in the local community get the Masjid they deserve.”

A consultation process is expected to take place over the next few months to discuss the correct ways to move forward, with dialogue between the MWC and local, national and international scholars and experts. ‘A space for women, managed by women’ was how Ms Gora initially described the idea, and she says it is important women to feel no sense of ‘alienation’ from their religion. “We’ve carried out an audit of local mosques focussing on services provided to women, above all ‘access’ was the biggest problem,” she said. “Our results highlight that the majority of mosques follow a patriarchal model, poor access for women; women’s representation on governance structures was non- existent, on committees and boards, segregated spaces that are dated and unwelcoming.

“The alienation that women feel has profound consequences for younger generations who are taught that Islam treats both men and women as spiritual equals yet the practice within mosques contradicts the principles. “In an era in which many young people feel that their faith is no longer relevant, or are going to extremes, we want to be able to provide a safe space for them to question, learn and grow whilst having an appreciation of their heritage as well as the opportunity to make informed choices relevant to the 21st Century.” Ms Gora adds that it is ‘inclusivity’ that she hopes to bring to Islam yet accepts certain duties would still have to be carried out by men. “We disagree with the view of women leading mixed congregational prayers and this will not take place under the MWC umbrella,” she continued. “Our intention is not to be divisive, nor to go against the values and principles of Islam, but to provide a space for the community which shows how women can lead and be included in places of worship and also impact positively on their families and communities.”

Thirty years ago, 56 people went to a football match and never returned home as the Valley Parade fire proved to be one of the worst sporting disasters in recent history. To commemorate the anniversary of the events that transpired on Saturday 11th May 1985, a memorial was held in Bradford’s Centenary Square last week whilst elsewhere, respects were also being paid at the other side of the world. In Brazil, a fellow Bradfordian who suffered burns in the fire as a young football fan, unveiled a plaque at Sao Paulo’s Museum of Football to commemorate those who died in the blaze in the Main Stand. Wasim Mir is currently the Deputy Ambassador in Brazil’s British Embassy and was 13years-old when he was forced to run onto the pitch for his own safety. Recalling the moment the fire struck, he said: “I had been taken to the match by my uncle, Reza Mir, to celebrate Bradford collecting the Third Division league trophy. As a special treat he bought tickets for the main stand. “Just before half time the section of the stand we were seated in was asked to evacuate by the police because of a small fire. “I remember walking calmly along the back of the stand when all of a sudden smoke was everywhere. After that I just remember running towards the pitch as fast as I could, I could feel the heat on my head and

covered my head with my hand to protect it. “After that I just wandered around the pitch looking for my uncle and started to panic. Luckily I eventually found him unhurt. “Although I saw the police carrying away a body in a make shift stretcher made out of a police jacket the extent of the what happened didn’t register. “It only dawned on me later when I went to hospital to have my injuries treated and saw hundreds of people with burns.” On Tuesday 12th May, Mr Mir was joined by Museum of Football director, Luiz Bloch, to unveil the memorial plaque which will be homed amongst some of the sport’s most renowned memorabilia. It was the Deputy Ambassador’s idea to bring the

tribute to the museum and after consulting officials from the museum itself and the Fire Remembrance Panel in Bradford, it was confirmed that a tribute would be installed. “As someone who was injured in the fire it felt like a real honour to unveil the plaque at the Football Museum in Sao Paulo,” Mr Mir added. “It feels fitting to have those who died remembered in Brazil, a country so closely associated with football, the country of Pele, Zico and Romario. “It was good to talk to the Executive Director of the Museum, Luiz Bloch about the impact the Bradford City Fire had had in terms of initiating improvements in stadiums in the UK, making them safer and more family friendly.”

n the recent judgment of Sierra Fishing & Ors v Ali Zbeeb & Ors the High Court has taken the unusual step of removing an arbitrator under section 24 Arbitration Act 1996. Commercial arbitration is a means of resolving business disputes between two or more parties outside a formal court system. After reviewing all of the evidence an arbitrator will make a final decision in the case which the parties are then bound by. This case centred around Sierra Fishing (a Sierra Leonean seafood supply company) who had entered into a written contract for a loan agreement. A dispute arose between the parties and in August 2012 the defendants served a request for arbitration in London and confirmed that they had appointed Mr Ali Zbeeb as arbitrator. In June 2014, Sierra Fishing objected to Mr Zbeeb acting as arbitrator. Mr Zbeeb rejected this argument stating that his appointment was valid and further, that they had lost the right to appeal his appointment (under section 73 Arbitration Act 1996) because they had already taken part in the arbitration process. Sierra Fishing then submitted an application to remove Mr Zbeeb as arbitrator under section 24(1) Arbitration Act 1996. The High Court, following section 24 Arbitration Act and applying the common law test of bias – would a fair minded and informed observer conclude that there was a real possibility of bias – decided that Mr Zbeeb should be removed as arbitrator. In finding that Mr Zbeeb was not impartial, the High Court considered four persuasive submissions as put

forward by Sierra Fishing. These were: 1. The legal and business connection between Dr Farran (the first defendant and chairman of a Lebanese bank) and the arbitrator – Mr Zbeeb had been engaged as legal Counsel by the bank where Dr Farran was chairman, and Mr Zbeeb’s father continued to act as legal counsel for both Dr Farran personally and the bank. 2. The arbitrator’s involvement in the drafting of two relevant agreements – this agreement (the loan agreement) had included the clause that would allow Mr Zbeeb to have sole conduct of the arbitration. 3. The connection between the arbitrator and the lawyers for the defendants – however the Judge found there was not enough evidence to support this submission. 4. The arbitrator’s conduct of the arbitration – namely Mr Zbeeb’s refusal to postpone publishing his award pending the outcome of the Sierra Fishing’s challenge and the content and tone of Mr Zbeeb’s communications. The Judge confirmed that Mr Zbeeb’s tone made it appear to an outsider that he himself had taken up the battle on behalf of the defendants and therefore had not remained impartial. The removal of an arbitrator is normally considered an extreme measure however referring to both the International Bar Associations Guidelines on Conflicts of Interests in International Arbitration (IBA) and the Arbitration Act 1996 the Judge deemed that the facts of this case were significant enough to show bias on the part of Mr Zbeeb, therefore the only fair outcome was to order his removal.

India's defence procurement agency has cleared the purchase of 56 transport planes from Europe's Airbus in a deal worth an estimated £1.2billion, as the country updates its aging fleet of Avro aircraft. The government also approved a Russian proposal to build Kamov light helicopters in India and the purchase of 145 ultra-light howitzers from the United States as part of its efforts to modernise the military. Under the bid, Airbus will supply 16 of the C295 planes in ‘flyaway’ condition and the subsequent 40 would be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems in India. They would be the first military planes built by an Indian private company on Indian soil with current manufacturing in the nation dominated by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics. “The defence acquisition

Massive 7-foot-long eel caught A silvery-gray conger eel had already gone limp by the time fishermen found it on their trawler, but its shocking length of 7 feet (2.1 meters) still caught them off guard, according to the British company that found it. Fishermen mistakenly snagged the blue-eyed eel off the southwestern coast of the United Kingdom. At the time, they were trawling the area (i.e. dragging nets to catch fish) on an inshore trawler

named Hope. The conger eel got stuck in the nets, and was already dead by the time the fishermen hauled it aboard, according to the company, Plymouth Fisheries. “I was stunned because it was so huge,” Scott Govier, a commercial fisherman with Plymouth Fisheries said. “It was already dead when we pulled it up, else we would have thrown him back in and let him live.” In fact, the eel narrowly missed

setting a U.K. record. Once gutted, it weighed 131 lbs. (59 kilograms), just shy of the 133.25-lb. (60.44 kg) record for a rod-caught conger eel. Before it was gutted, the eel likely weighed between 155 and 160 lbs. (70 kg to 73 kg), Plymouth Fisheries said. “Conger does not have a great deal of commercial value today, as prices have dropped. But this was an impressive fish, and a catch to make any angler's day,” Pete Bromley,

manager of Plymouth Fisheries, said in a statement. Typically, conger eels are inexpensive, but the massive catch brought in about £40 when it was sold at an auction in Plymouth, the company said. Conger eels are typically found hiding among the Southwest's many wrecks, or on reefs and rocky ground, “but they do venture out to open ground in search of food, usually during neap tides or slack water,” Bromley said. A photo the company posted on Twitter initially made the fish look much longer than 7 feet, but two additional photos — including one comparing the conger eel to a man holding another eel, and another of the fish on a pallet — later provided a better perspective. “The chap standing next to it is around 5 foot, 7 inches [1.7 m] tall, and we estimated the conger eel to be around 7 feet in length,” Bromley said. “Our second photo showing it lying on a pallet also makes this clear, as this pallet is only 1 meter by 1.2 meters [3.2 feet by 3.9 feet] in size.”

Reg plates fetch record price at auctions The record-breaking sale of a set of registration plates in Lincolnshire has caused quite the stir in the markets this week as more than £500,000 was raised during a recent auction. Two divine registrations were sold during a government-sponsored auction at The Casa Hotel, Chesterfield with KR15 HNA (Krishna) fetching a spectacular £233,360. Meanwhile, KR15 HAN (Krishan) was picked up for £98,576 showing how in demand registration plates currently are to complement any motor. KR15 HNA earns the distinction of attracting the highest price ever paid at auction for a ‘new-style’ registration and it is clear to see why. The current format of a two-letter code (indicating the place of issue), a date identifier (currently '15' for 2015) and three

further random letters, was introduced in 2001. With seven characters to play with, the new plates present enormous possibilities to represent names or words with Krishna represented by these innovative designs. Fans to sue Pacquiao

Boxing history’s biggest fight becomes fight in court

It’s seems that the boxing fight of the century is to make history for the second time as boxing fans and their lawyers are calling the hyped-up fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. a fraud and want their money back. At least 32 class action lawsuits across the USA allege Pacquiao should have disclosed a shoulder injury to boxing fans before the fight, which Mayweather won in a unanimous decision after 12 rounds that most fans thought didn't live up to the hype. "The fight was not great, not entertaining, not electrifying. It was boring, slow and lackluster," according to a lawsuit filed in Texas alleging racketeering, a claim usually reserved for organised crime. A lawsuit filed on behalf of Flights Beer Bar near LAX airport in California said Pacquiao and his promoter's actions were, "nothing but a cashgrab." The bar paid $2,600 to broadcast the fight. As for that grabbed cash, the fighters are each expected to earn more than $100 million, Mayweather more than Pacquiao, and HBO and Showtime broke records raking in more than $400 million from 4.4 million paying to watch the pay-per-view broadcast. Those 4.4 million paid up to $100 each to watch the fight, and the lawsuits are seeking their money back. It isn't as easy as showing a receipt and demanding a refund, though. A federal panel of judges will likely first need to decide if the cases from multiple states and Puerto Rico should be consolidated into one case. From

there, a judge would have to decide whether to certify them as class actions or not. What's sought in each is the same: a jury trial and at least $5 million in damages, the threshold for federal class actions. But the defendants differ. All include Pacquiao and his promotions team but some add Mayweather and his representatives along with HBO, Showtime and cable companies. Representatives for Pacquiao and Top Rank Promotions, HBO and Showtime had no comment to offer on the lawsuits and Mayweather Promotions did not return multiple phone messages. Exhibit A for most of the lawsuits is a Nevada Athletic Commission medical questionnaire that Pacquiao signed days before the fight. When asked if he had any injuries including to his shoulder he replied "no." In fact, his shoulder was injured enough to warrant surgery shortly after the fight. In a twist reserved for whodone-its, Pacquiao revealed for the first time in a post-fight press conference that he had torn his rotator cuff weeks before. The Nevada Athletic Commission denied him a pain reliever mere hours before the fight when regulators first learned of the injury. Conspiracy theories abound as to how many people knew about the injury and when, including claims in a few of the lawsuits that Mayweather had a spy in Pacquiao's camp and the boxer targeted Pacquiao's right shoulder during the fight. Experts in resolving legal disputes doubt disgruntled boxing

fans will be able to claim victory. “They'd have more lawsuits if they didn't hold the fight," said Maureen Weston, director of Pepperdine University's entertainment, media and sports dispute resolution project. “If a fight is what fans were paying for, the fighters unquestionably delivered, she said. Just because people didn't like the show doesn't mean they get their money back,” she said. “Ultimately, the question is, who did Pacquiao have a legal duty to explain his injury to? “Short answer: He didn't have to tell viewers, Weston said. The only contract viewers had was with their cable companies, which in turn had contracts with HBO and Showtime.” It's not the first time customers have taken their fight to court when things didn't go quite the way they expected in the field of entertainment. Remember Milli Vanilli? Music fans in the 1990s argued the lipsynching pop duo owed them a refund once it was revealed they weren't actually singing. Or the bite-fight with Mike Tyson? Sports fans may have gotten an earful but they contended they didn't pay to see a boxing match only for it to be disqualified. Neither resulted in judgments for refund-seeking customers. Milli Vanilli fans got a buck or two back in a settlement. So if viewers were promised a fight, and they got a 12-round fight, isn't that enough? Lawyer Caleb Marker, who represents clients in two separate class action suits against Pacquiao, says that's arguable.

Egypt’s Ex-President Morsi gets death sentence An Egyptian court has sentenced former President Mohammed Morsi to death in connection with a mass jailbreak in 2011. Sitting in a caged dock, Morsi pumped his fists in the air in defiance as the judge read his verdict. Another 105 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were also given the capital punishment. The defendants were accused of plotting jailbreaks and attacks on police during the uprising that overthrew longtime President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The verdict is significant because it marks the first time in Egypt's history that a president has been sentenced to death. The cases, like any capital sentence, will be referred to Egypt's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for his nonbinding opinion before any executions can take place.

Morsi, was sentenced by the court on charges that he and his aides passed state secrets to foreign groups, including Palestinians' Hamas and Lebanon's Hizbollah, to destabilise Egypt. The court also sought capital punishment for Brotherhood leader Khairat el-Shater and 15 others for conspiring with foreign militant groups against Egypt. Muslim Brotherhood official Amr Darrag has condemned the ruling as politicallymotivated and called on the international community to take action. "This is a political verdict and represents a murder crime that is about to be committed, and it should be stopped by the international community," Mr Darrag told Reuters in Istanbul. Morsi is already serving a 20year sentence following his conviction on 21st April on charges linked to the killing of

protesters outside a Cairo presidential palace in December 2012. He became Egypt's first freely-elected leader in June 2012 in the wake of the uprising that ousted Mubarak. But he was removed from power by the army in 2013 after protests against his presidency. It is expected that Mohammed Morsi will appeal this verdict and if he does, it will be a lengthy process. The army chief who overthrew Morsi, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is now president after having won elections last year. He has pledged to eradicate the Brotherhood, once the largest political movement in the country. Human rights groups have accused Egyptian authorities of widespread abuses in a crackdown on Brotherhood supporters as well as secular activists, allegations they deny.

Karan Menon knew his answer was right but wasn't sure how to argue his case. Contestants in the USA’s National Geographic Bee aren't instructed on challenging what they're told is a wrong answer. He raised his hand and hoped host Soledad O'Brien would notice. O'Brien called on him. Karan a 14-year-old eighthgrader from Edison, New Jersey, USA explained that his answer was correct. The question: "The Mesabi Range contains a large deposit of what metal-bearing mineral?" O'Brien was looking for was "iron ore." Karan said "taconite," which is a form of iron ore. After conferring for about five minutes, the judges gave him credit. That point was just enough for Karan to avoid elimination and make the top three. He cruised from there, getting every championship-round question right to become the 27th National Geographic Bee champion on Wednesday. "I knew this question," he said. "I was 100 percent sure. I didn't know why I had been marked wrong, so I decided to speak up for myself and challenge the question." Karan studied for eight hours a day after winning the

Following rumours that burnt pages of the Quran had been found, angry members of the village told the impoverished couple to convert to Islam to repent against their alleged sin, or face the consequences for committing blasphemy. Witnesses said when they tried to leave they were locked in a room at the kiln and told they must pay duties first. The next day hundreds of people converged on the kiln. They were dragged out, attacked with bricks and shovels and later laid on the brick oven to be burnt alive. The case raised fears among Christians, who form a minority in the Muslim country where blasphemy laws are controversial and attacks against Christians are common. Protests were staged demanding justice.

Historic match for Pakistan as cricket returns back on home soil after six years It's no secret that Pakistan is cricket crazy, but over the next few days, this passion for the game is expected to go into overdrive because for the first time in six years, the Pakistani national team is coming home. On 3rd March, 2009, the cricket world was left stunned when Sri Lanka's visiting cricket team was attacked by militants on their way to a match in the northeastern city of Lahore. The gunmen sprayed their tour bus with bullets as it neared the stadium, killing eight people - six policemen and two civilians - and leaving several of the visiting players wounded. The incident was a huge blow for the future of international cricket in the country. In the years that followed international teams backed out of playing here citing security concerns, as Pakistan entered one of the darkest periods in its struggle with an increasingly violent militant insurgency. Fast forward to 2015 and although Pakistan's militant

problem has not been defeated, there's been a noticeable sense of hope and celebration across the nation since Zimbabwe announced they would be coming to play two T20 matches and three one-day internationals (ODI) in Lahore, the scene of the 2009 horror. The Pakistan Cricket Board said the first two matches at the 60,000capacity arena are completely sold out. Thousands of security officials have been deployed across the city in anticipation of the event. With international teams previously unwilling to travel to Pakistan, the home team has had to play matches in the UAE, which has really cost the PCB. NEPAL EARTHQUAKE: Over three million children are in danger A second major earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday 12th May, just two weeks after a devastating quake left nearly 8,000 people dead and three-million children in danger. At least 65 people have been killed and 1,200 injured as a result and bodies are still being pulled from the rubble. Staff from aid agencies are on the ground providing life-saving support to children and their families. The first 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday 25th April ruined lives and destroyed infrastructure. Over 7,800 people are reported to have died and over 17,800 people were injured. This huge earthquake was followed by more than 60 aftershocks, which toppled homes and schools, forcing thousands of families into open spaces and temporary camps. Many families are struggling to simply protect themselves from the sun and rain and it is expected that needs will grow in the coming days as more information is received from remote areas. As children and families face the

aftermath of this disaster, water supplies are running low and food is scarce. The risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera is growing rapidly and at least 15,000 children with severe malnutrition need treatment. With the monsoon season only a few weeks away, children face greater risk of disease and infection. A recent poll showed that one in four Britons have donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Nepal earthquake appeal in its first two weeks since its launch. According to research from the Charities Aid Foundation, which surveyed more than 2,000 people, the key drivers that made people donate were the large number of people impacted by the earthquake (55 per cent of respondents cited this) and the belief that international aid is essential for helping the disaster (54 per cent). The DEC’s appeal has raised more than £50m in its first fortnight, which is higher than the £34m raised in the first three months of its Ebola appeal.

Brendan Paddy, DEC’s head of communications, said: “Our donation levels have always varied significantly depending on the type of disaster concerned. “Appeals triggered by earthquakes and the associated tsunami generally raise the highest totals. These are sudden and devastating events, producing a very high level of news coverage with shocking imagery. Quakes are seen as natural disasters and donors seem more likely to empathise in these cases than when we appeal in response to conflicts.” Of those who had already donated to the appeal, 42 per cent of respondents said that television was the most influential media channel in encouraging them to donate. The research also found that those aged between 25 and 34 were most likely to donate, with 32 per cent in that age group doing so. Cash has been the most common method of giving (32 per cent of respondents donated in this way), followed by online channels (30 per cent) and text messaging (22 per cent).

A sell-out Sami Yusuf tour has given vulnerable orphans the chance to build brighter futures through Penny Appeal’s orphan programme. The humanitarian charity teamed up with multitalented artist Sami Yusuf for a nine-city tour, to support orphans in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Every venue on the tour was sold-out and the packed crowds contributed in donations and commitments to raise an incredible half a million pounds, which will provide 1,076 orphan sponsorships and build eight orphan homes. Each Penny Appeal orphan sponsorship costs just 50 pence a day, and goes on to provide an orphan with food, clothes, healthcare, education and a dedicated foster mother – all in a loving and caring home. The tour was supported by Sami Yusuf, who is a world famous singer, musician and

songwriter. The popular artist hasn’t been on tour in the UK since 2008, but returned to perform songs from his highly accredited album, ‘The Centre’. Sami treated audiences to his self-coined genre of spiritique, which beautifully blends Western harmonics with traditional Islamic arts. The performances were made even more unique and special with the help of Sami’s musicians, who played traditional Iranian and Asian instruments. A major chunk of forthcoming flick ‘ABCD 2’ has been shot in the vibrant locations of USA, which meant that many locals were hired during the shoot. While shooting in Vegas, Varun was given the famous Sinatra Suite at the Mirage where the late singer used to stay whenever he performed in the city. When some dancers in the ‘ABCD 2’ crew got to know of this, they started telling Varun scary stories about the suite just for jest. They told Varun how the legendary Frank Sinatra stayed in the suite very often and thought of it as his home, so even after his death he hasn’t checked out of there. The Sinatra ghost story became a regular conversation topic between the crew-

members and Varun, and it would end with everyone laughing it off. Khambatta is also gay, mentioned in a rival newspaper by the derogatory term "fruitcake". Johnny becomes Khambatta's lovepawn whom he misuses for his own ends. He tries to forget the scars of his past by receiving new ones in the boxing ring.

Future of turbo power The atmosphere will be especially highly charged at this year’s Wörthersee Tour festival because it will play host to an Audi TT clubsport turbo concept delivering a colossal 600PS and 650Nm with the help of an innovative electrically driven biturbo compressor that is close to being production ready. With its stripped-out interior, wider stance and distinctive rear wing the most extreme TT to date is intentionally reminiscent of the thoroughbred Audi 90 IMSA GTO race car of the late 1980s, so it is guaranteed to make an impact at Austria’s annual meeting for Volkswagen Group enthusiasts. “The electric biturbo signifies a new dimension in driving enjoyment; it boosts sprinting ability and torque and enables high peak power,” explains Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi Board Member for Technical Development. “In our TDI engines, we are close to production readiness with this technology. We are now presenting it in a TFSI – here too, we are the first automaker in the world to do this. For our fans at Wörthersee, we have packaged the electric biturbo in a very sporty show car.” The Audi TT clubsport turbo has a power-boosted 2.5 TFSI engine with very impressive performance data. From 2,480 cc of displacement, the five-cylinder engine produces 600PS of power and 650Nm (479.4 lb-ft) of torque, the latter from 3,000 to 7,000 rpm. This means that it produces 240PS and 260Nm (191.8 lb-ft) per litre of displacement. Power is transferred via a manual six-speed transmission. Thanks to systematic lightweight design, the TT clubsport turbo show car has an unladen weight of just 1,396 kg. The car completes the standard sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 192 mph. The TT clubsport turbo plays out its big advantage over the first few metres of a sprint. cover up to 16 metres within the first 2.5 seconds – which is six metres further than a comparable car without this innovation. That is a difference of around one and onehalf car lengths. An electrically powered compressor offers significant advantages: It revs up to maximum rpm rapidly and without any perceptible delay, and it continues to boost charge pressure when too little drive energy is left in the exhaust gas for the conventional turbocharger. This operating principle makes it possible to design the conventional turbocharger more specifically for high charge pressures and consequently for high engine power – the e-turbo assures spontaneous response and powerful sprints from low engine speeds at all times. The effect is impressive. The 2.5 TFSI engine builds up its tremendous power without any perceptible delay. This power is available in any situation – whenever the accelerator pedal is pressed. In an acceleration duel, the TT clubsport turbo effortlessly pulls away from a counterpart with an identically powered engine but no

electric biturbo. However, it is not just the power of the five-cylinder engine that is fascinating – so is its unmistakable throaty sound. The exhaust system is designed for minimal backpressure; a side pipe to the ambient air is located immediately after the racing-type muffler. The 2.5 TFSI engine is cooled by a racing-type radiator. In the lower engine speed range, the electrically driven compressor boosts torque by up to 200Nm (147.5 lb-ft). A dedicated 48-volt electrical sub-system – another key future technology from Audi – supplies electrical energy to the turbocharger. A compact lithiumion battery in the luggage compartment stores the energy that is generated by recuperation when coasting. A DC/DC converter provides the connection to the 12volt electrical system. The power of the Audi TT clubsport turbo reaches the road impressively via a quattro permanent all-wheel drive system whose multi-plate clutch is mounted on the rear axle for better weight distribution. A coilover suspension system enables highly precise

adjustment of the body’s ride height and the compression and rebound of the shock absorbers. An electric lifting function protects the equipment from damage by street kerbs. Electronic stabilisation control (ESC) and torque vectoring round out the dynamic qualities of the suspension ideally. The show car’s wheels are size 9.5 J x 20. Their six twin-spoke design is finished in a bi-colour look – both gloss turn finished and matt black – and the tyres are size 275/30. Carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs are mounted behind all four wheels; they are very lightweight and wearresistant. The front brake discs measure 370 mm in diameter. Widened by 14 cm: spectacular add-on parts The compact sports car takes a full stance on the road with track widths of 1,736 mm in front and 1,729 mm at the rear. The car is 4.33 metres long and 1.97 metres wide, including the side mirrors – 14 cm wider than the technical platform upon which it was based. Its angular wings contribute a separate additive shape to the car body. They take the characteristic design motif of the Audi TT to an extreme and

emphasise the quattro drive. The wings of the show car – painted in the exterior colour Ferro Titanium – are open at the front and rear. Air from the car’s slipstream flows through them to cool the brakes. The Singleframe grille and large air inlets – whose vertical fins form a continuation to the light signature of the Matrix LED headlights – are also optimised for maximum air throughput. The manually adjustable rear wing is an advanced development of the Audi Sport TT Cup with which the brand very recently launched a dedicated race series. It is now 20 cm wider, and the side flaps, which feature the four rings, were given a new geometry. The wing consists of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) as do all other add-on parts: the air inlets and the large splitter at the front, the side panels and side sill trims as well as the voluminous diffuser at the rear whose lateral segments reference the motif of the air inlets. A protective “cage” of ultra-highstrength titanium tubes makes the rear zone of the interior even more rigid and safe. In front, there are lightweight race car bucket seats with four-point harnesses. The display and operating concept with the digital Audi virtual cockpit focuses on the driver, who can control all key driving parameters via four satellite buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. CFRP and black Alcantara define the interior of the Audi TT clubsport turbo. The race seats are upholstered in coral orange Alcantara and feature contrasting stitching and piping. In the doors and on the centre console, CFRP parts with their large surfaces create sporty accents, and the doors are closed by pulling on a tube-shaped grip with an Alcantara inlay. The air vents and gear shifter also have coral orange accents – the aluminium gear shift lever travels in an open shift gate.

Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport concept With the Golf GTE Sport presented as a world premiere at the legendary GTI event at Lake Wรถrthersee, Volkswagen is catapulting the GT tradition into the future. The high-tech Golf that is largely made of carbon is powered by a total of three motors - combined in a plug-in hybrid drive with system power of 295 kW / 400 PS. The concept car breaks down traditional barriers between road and motorsport vehicles. Its progressive hybrid system in combination with the high-tech allwheel drive, a lightweight body, optimum aerodynamic downforce, precision running gear based on the design of the current Golf GTE, a new motor racing cockpit (including visualisation of the racing line) and an unusual seating concept (two monocoque-like interior areas) enable breathtaking performance on the racetrack. At the press of a button, however, the concept car is able to cover a distance of up to 50 kilometres on electric power alone and hence with zero emissions. The 1.6 litre TSI (turbocharged

direct-injection engine) adapted from the superb Polo R WRC (World Rally Car) is accommodated in the engine compartment at the front of the car. It delivers 220 kW / 299 PS and maximum torque of 400 Nm. Volkswagen has already won the World Rally Championship twice with this engine. In the Golf GTE Sport the fourcylinder masterpiece is assisted by two electric motors. The engineers positioned the first electric motor at the front (in the housing of the 6speed dual-clutch gearbox). It develops 85 kW / 115 PS and maximum torque of 330 Nm. The second electric motor is located at the rear with the same power output but torque of 270 Nm. The total torque of the drive system is 670 Nm. Whenever possible, the concept car is powered solely by electricity without producing any emissions. In sporty "GTE mode" all three motors work together, giving the allwheel-drive Golf GTE Sport a standstill to 100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h. In the NEDC cycle for plugin hybrid vehicles the sports car consumes just 2.0 l/100 km/h.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to witness for the first time a boxer who has everything in his fighting arsenal from speed, aggression, skill, movement to supreme defensive and offensive skills. It is rare to see any fighter that has all the fighting qualities possible as well as being the complete package and very entertaining to watch, but there is such a fighter by the name of Roman Gonzalez (43-0 37KO). Gonzalez is an undefeated junior flyweight boxer with a very impressive winning record, but unfortunately in boxing the smaller men tend to go relatively unnoticed. It has been said about flyweights that “they are physically the furthest thing from intimidating in a sport built on promise of big time violence; there is no place for a little man to shine.” However when a little man like Gonzalez tend to be such great boxers then big American television networks tend to finally take notice and give them the exposure they deserve. It is better late than never. Gonzalez on his HBO debut is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world and is a future star in the making. He is a three division title holder at age 27 years old and has won titles at straw weight and junior flyweight. Gonzalez took on the well respected and established former junior flyweight titleholder Edgar

Sosa (51-9 30KO) and made Sosa look like another average fighter as he scored three knockdowns in the second round that was declared a knockout victory for Gonzalez. In the bout Gonzalez managed to land 72 punches in less than six minutes including 59% of them being power shots compared to Sosa just landing 14 punches in total. Such is the continuing interest in Gonzalez that American television network HBO for the first time in 20 years aired a flyweight bout. After his win against Sosa, Gonzalez made his intentions clear as he said “I want to fight [unified flyweight titleholder] Juan Estrada next, I want to fight him as soon as possible and hopefully on HBO and in the United States." If the Juan Estrada fight does happen next for Gonzalez then I only see one winner of that bout and that will be Gonzalez because in 2012 Gonzalez secured a win via decision against Estrada, prior to Estrada moving up in weight and claiming flyweight belts which he has since defended five times. The other option for Gonzalez is a potential future bout against undefeated Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue that will surely be a “super fight” among the lighter weight classes or there are other mouth-watering fights for Gonzalez against Amnat Ruenroeng, Brian Viloria and Kazuto Ioka and the once-beaten Chinese star Zou Shiming. Gonzalez is now ranked number 2 in the pound for pound world rankings by the “Transnational Boxing Ranking Board” and he deserves to be ranked as one of the best. Gonzalez for me is definitely a small firework with a huge bang and is probably best described as a smaller version of the 1980’s heavyweight Mike Tyson who would knockout fighters a lot bigger than him at will and possessed the same knockout power in his left hand as he did in his right.

THE WEEK NFA’s Onu Miah was man of the match in the SLUK Interleague Elite Cup final and will now be hoping to see his side move up the league rankings on Thursday nights.

NFA 1-0 A6 Milan It may have been a campaign to forget in the league for NFA this season yet they finally had something to cheer about on Monday night as they overcame A6 Milan by a single goal to clinch the SLUK Interleague Elite Cup. A solitary strike from the ever reliant Kabir Miah was enough to seal all three points and bring some light to a so far disappointing season for last year’s Division One runner ups. Both sides needed penalties to secure their place in the final after tying their semi-final legs in what was a nervy atmosphere all night. Monday night league’s A6 Milan were goalless with Beeston Tribe when the final whistle blew in their last-four tie and eventually made it through to the final, winning 2-1 on spot kicks. A similarly tight affair between NFA and Borussia Teeth ended 1-1 yet the clinical edge of NFA showed in the shootout as they progressed with a 2-0 win. The final itself was one of few chances. Both teams had already played on the night and tired legs were evident as chances were forced to come from range for most of the encounter. Onu Miah was a constant threat from midfield for NFA and he came close to opening the scoring with a well placed effort only to be denied by the keeper. The contest was finally settled when Kabir Miah popped up with a solo effort to seal victory for his side who deserved this year’s trophy. NFA will now be hoping to take their cup form back into the league and finish strongly this term whilst A6 Milan are still well in contention for a league title challenge this year. Pujara admitted that he loved his brief stay with Yorkshire, and has opened the door for a return in the coming seasons. Sheffield’s Kid Galahad has faced many tough opponents during his rise in the boxing world yet his latest fight outside of the ring may be his hardest yet. The 25-year-old, real name Abdul Barry Awad, was handed a two-year ban from boxing earlier this month after testing positive for steroids in a urine sample given to officials in September last year.
