DEMON Family continue their fight to appeal son’s five year sentence SENTENCED: Shamas Ahmad was handed a five year prison sentence earlier this month on charges of GBH in Leeds’ Bierkeller venue

A family from Beeston have continued in their fight to prove the ‘innocence’ of their youngest sibling, with a most recent protest held outside a Batley Solicitors last week. Shamas Ahmad was sentenced to a five year prison term earlier this month after being charged with Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) in July last year. During his work as a doorman at Leeds’ Bierkeller venue, he is alleged to have struck a customer four times with a glass after coming into a dispute with a group of customers. He was sentenced on Friday 11th April after losing his case, whilst being represented by Nasser Ali Khan, of Musa Solicitors. The family are currently trying to appeal the sentence handed down to the 24-year-old and have most recently pointed their finger of blame at the solicitors. A peaceful protest, attended

by tens of people on Tuesday 29th April, was held outside Musa Solicitors, Bradford Road, to demonstrate the family’s discontent at the way the whole defence case was handled. Shamas’ older brother, Shabab Ahmad, explained why he believed the solicitors were to blame. “From the very start we felt like we weren’t being given all the information needed for the case from our solicitor,” Shabab said. “Shamas was charged under Section 18 for GBH, rather than Section 20, which

ultimately meant that if the court did find him guilty he was going to face a longer sentence. “Under Section 20, he faced an absolute maximum of five years, yet under Section 18 it could have been anything up to life. “We were told this by the judge and questioned our representative, Nasser Ali Khan, about it but he said to progress under Section 18. “We believe that his full concentration wasn’t on the case. He said that he explained it to my father but if they had of explained it

DISTRAUGHT: Shamas’ mother, Tehira Nasreen, spoke through the tears as she said she wants ‘her son home’

properly to him, and what these sections actually meant, then we wouldn’t be in this situation.” Shabab added: “There were a lot of other things as well. [He] did not seem to have sufficient paperwork for the defence; it was only five pages of A4 in length and when we tried to question him on it he wouldn’t answer.” Musa Patel, Partner at Musa Patel Solicitors stated: “It is indeed regrettable and unfortunate that the family members have resorted to these types of action against the

firm. “The allegations and assertions made against the firm, its personnel and the Barrister are without any basis or foundation. “Any concerns they have should be addressed through the legal avenues available. “We are limited to what we can say due to client confidentiality.” The family are currently preparing an appeal and have 28 days from the day of the sentence to formally submit it.

PROUD: Persia’s mother, Sarah Shafi, says she was extremely proud to see her daughter perform on opening night and is amazed by her ‘natural talent’

Ten-year-old lives her dream and performs in La Bohème Cover story continued

“I love everything about it,” she said. “I really like how it combines acting and singing together and have been mesmerised by it since my mum first took me to see my first show when I was seven-yearsold. “We actually went to see La Bohème here in Leeds. I loved it so much my mum took me to London to see it again and I told her that is what I wanted to do.” She added: “I feel really proud of myself to now be performing on the main stage. I am really happy and proud of my mum as well because she was the one who helped me get here.” Persia’s mum, Sarah Shafi, first realised her daughter had a ‘gift’ when the child would sing to herself at home after they went to see La Bohème for the first time. From that moment, Sarah says she knew this was what her little girl was supposed to do with her natural talent. “This voice just came out of nowhere after we had been to see the opera,” she explained. “Persia started putting music on at home and then the next thing this amazing voice came out and I just thought it was incredible. “She told me she just wants to

sing opera so I thought I’ll call Opera North. They said bring her down and after auditioning her, said they were starting up a Children’s Chorus, and she got a place in that.” As part of the Children’s Chorus, Persia has already performed at the Royal Albert Hall and sung for

the Dalai Lama when he visited Leeds, yet it is the La Bohème opening night performance which Sarah says will be the most memorable for the family. “It was just an incredible feeling to see her performing on stage in front of so many people,” she said. “To see her living out her dream

was such a special feeling and I will never forget it and I’m sure she won’t either.” La Bohème’s final show in Leeds will take place on Saturday 10th May before the production moves on to The Lowry in Manchester, until Saturday 17th May.

“I feel really proud of myself to now be performing on the main stage. I am really happy and proud of my mum as well because she was the one who helped me get here.”

Constructor’s construction proposal

Leeds is hoping to equip the next generation of world-class engineers as it officially enters its bid to host a new further education college. Leeds City Council announced on Wednesday that they had put the city forward to become the home of a specialist construction college developing the engineering and construction skills required for the implementation of a high-speed rail network. This unique college would support skills and training across the UK to deliver important future infrastructure projects. The proposed four-acre site is on a cleared brownfield space on Carlisle Road in the South Bank. By 2016 the site will be fully ready for construction and the final design would feature at least two bespoke specially equipped work spaces with environmentally friendly elements.

Residents from a street in Bradford have expressed their discontent at housing developers who plan on building five new homes on their only remaining community play area. Grosvenor Road, in Manningham, currently has one small area of land which local children use to play safely, just away from the busy Manningham Lane. However, an application put forward by Firebird Homes, a subsidiary of Manningham Housing Association, could soon see this bit of land turned into the site of the city’s latest housing development. Ansar Miah is one resident from

the street who is helping to publicise the appeal against any development on the land which he believes is crucial for the local community. “This land used to be a park with swings and slides,” he explained. “A couple of years ago Yorkshire Housing came down and removed it all, saying they were going to replace it but nothing ever happened. “Instead now we are hearing that they are going to build houses on the site which would leave the kids nowhere to play in an already built up area. “Just further down from us the council have already approved planning for more than 200 new houses so are these five homes really going to be that beneficial to anyone?”

May 2014 - 1st Edition Mr Miah said he remembered playing in the park more than 20 years ago and his children regularly use the space for activities. He now worries that they will have to travel across busy roads to play outdoors, which could be dangerous without adult supervision. “There is another park nearby but it is not close enough for children to just go on their own without a parent,” he added. “My biggest concern is that this kind of thing seems to be happening across the city. Parks are being removed to make way for housing and eventually the city

is going to have nowhere for children to go or the elderly to walk around.” A statement issued by Yorkshire Housing read: “The play area has not been used as such for a number of years. The play equipment was removed in 2010. “We have received feedback from local people of the play area becoming a health and safety concern. We knew this space could be put to much better use for the community.” The street have begun a petition to reject any proposals to develop on the land and have so far collected more than 50 signatures.

Manningham residents say ‘no’ to housing development site

New Travellers site

Leeds City Council is seeking to end a cycle of encampment and eviction for Travellers in the city by using a location at Kidacre Street which has been empty for a number of years. The council has developed a plan to expand the current Cottingley Springs Travellers site and, subject to a planning inquiry, this can provide around 12 more permanent pitches. In the meantime, because Kidacre Street is a site that has lain empty for a number of years, the council believes it is the best site available to provide an interim solution. The council is keen to meet concerns raised by local communities, as well as trying to provide suitable places for Travellers to stay, also reducing the costs for arranging alternative pitches and evictions.

Subways get red carpet treatment

New artworks on the wall of some of Bradford's city centre subways are stopping people in their tracks. Unemployed people, volunteers and artists have got rid of dated murals on the walls of the Jacobs Well and National Media Museum subways and are transforming them into vibrant modern scenes. New artworks, already complete, depict the opening of City Park with fireworks lighting up the sky; Bradford City Football Club with its bantam mascot and modern stadium and Five Rise Locks at Bingley. One subway with be devoted to Bradford City of Film showing highlights of 100 years of filming in the district and the floor will be painted red to really give it the red carpet treatment. Twelve walls are being painted in total and other scenes will include Salts Mill; Bolling Hall; the Wool Exchange and the National Media Museum.

‘Good’ at skilling workforce

Bradford Council’s ‘Skills for Work’ service is celebrating a successful Ofsted inspection, as they have been judged to be "Good” in all areas. ‘Skills for Work’, which is part of the Council’s Regeneration Department, delivers employment and skills provision for adults and young people, across the Bradford District. A team of five Ofsted inspectors spent three days inspecting in March, looking at every aspect of the employment and skills provision which includes apprenticeships and classroom learning. Inspectors judged that all areas of learning were ‘Good’ and made specific reference to the quality of the teaching and learning, good success rates for learners progressing in employment, and the effectiveness of leadership and management.

Clean up or pay up

More people are being urged to join a friendly campaign to rid the streets of dog mess. The success of Bradford Council’s Green Dog scheme in Bingley, with 80 people signing up, has led to its forthcoming extension to Baildon, Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale. The scheme involves dog walkers pledging to always clean up after their pet and to carry spare bags to give to other dog walkers who have not done so. Even people who don’t have pets have agreed to carry bags with them to give to dog walkers who haven’t cleaned up after their dogs. If you live in the Shipley Constituency and want to join the Green Dog scheme contact Marcia Churley or Paula Truman at the Shipley Area Neighbourhood Coordinator’s Office on 01274 437146. If you want to report dog walkers who let their pets foul the streets and open spaces, please go to the website wwwbradford.gov or telephone 01274 431000, with as many details as possible.

SCENE: The street, Wake Road, Sheffield, was cordoned off by police as investigations were underway regarding the house fire which killed five members of the same family

DEVASTATED: Ishfaq Hussain Kayan, the cousin of Anum Parvaiz who died in the fire, said the whole family was devastated

Three children are amongst the five victims of a fatal house fire which has ‘destroyed’ a family in Sheffield. The home, on Wake Road, Sharrow, was set ablaze on Sunday night, with a nineweek-old girl and two boys, Amaan Nazim, seven, and Adhyan Nazim, nine, dying alongside their aunt, Shabina Begum, 20, and grandmother, Anum Parvaiz, 54. Ms Parvaiz is believed to have run back into the blazing home in an attempt to rescue the children but sadly died at the scene. It is understood the children's father, Nazim Parvaiz, was out working when the fire broke out whilst their mother, Razia Nazim, survived and is currently being consoled by family members. Cousin of the 54-year-old grandmother who died, Ishfaq Hussain Kayan, said words cannot describe the tragedy.

“They (the children) were full of life, quite bubbly, very energetic. They were looking forward to attending school,” he said. “As soon as the news broke just after midnight, we came round. It's so sad. A couple of hours ago the whole family was leading their normal life - quite prosperous, happy. “Just in a matter of minutes the whole family has been destroyed. The whole family has gone. “You can well imagine what the children's parents are going through. I don't have the words to describe how the family is feeling, other than shell-shocked, devastated. “We are a close-knit family; there are enough people around to support the family.” He added: “They were such a lovely family, highly respected. Quite an industrious family who had everything going. This tragedy has struck and we have to try our level best to pull through this.” Four fire engines, from Central, Rivelin, Lowedges and Mansfield Road stations, along with a crew using an aerial ladder platform, were called to the scene to tackle the blaze whilst police cars and an ambulance also attended. A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said the cause of the blaze was being investigated.

Yorkshire’s only direct route to Pakistan is set be extinguished after Pakistan International Airlines announced that they would no longer operate out of Leeds Bradford Airport. The airline, which has had its share of controversial moments in recent years, has announced that the final flight is likely to leave LBA later this month on the 15th May. The route will now fly from Manchester instead, which has been described as ‘disappointing’ by the LBA aviation development and marketing director, Tony Hallwood. Mr Hallwood added that he was surprised at the decision, claiming that the airport's own figures showed the two flights were the ‘fastest growing of PIA services in the UK at present’. He said: “We know the figures and we have shown that our passenger growth over the last 12 months has been around about 30 per cent and, in certain months, higher than that…Which clearly shows there is significant demand.” Previously, in 2011, the airline had threatened to cancel its services from the Yorkshire airport, yet after consultations with the sites representatives, and then Bradford Lord Mayor, Naveeda Ikram, the decision was reversed. Cllr Ikram, who is also PIA’s senior supervisor for Bradford and LBA, said the decision will not have been an easy one to make, but ensured residents it was likely to only be temporary. “This is not a permanent thing I

Turning problems on their head

Wakefield Council has successfully turned around the lives of 795 troubled families as part of a ground-breaking government scheme. New figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government, show that Wakefield’s Troubled Families scheme has turned around 85per cent of its 930 troubled families. The figures show great progress in Wakefield, towards the Local Services Board Partner’s strategic priorities, which the Council’s Troubled Families programme is supporting. The progress of the programme means that: children are back in school where they were previously playing truant or excluded; high levels of youth crime and anti-social behaviour are down; adults are getting off benefits and into work; and the costs to the Council and taxpayer are being reduced too.

Improving autism services

City of York Council and health partners across York are joining forces with York St John University to improve local services for people with autism. The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at York St John University will be hosting and facilitating an ‘autism community of practice’ in partnership with the council, Leeds and York Partnership Teaching Foundation Trust and York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The group will include key stakeholders who are involved in the commissioning and delivery of services to individuals with autism, enabling them to share best practice and look at ways of improving services for customers and their families. The ‘community of practice’ is the latest in a series of initiatives in York aiming to raise the profile of autism and further improve the services available to people with autism.

‘Let her stay’

DANGER: Afusat Saliu (right) and her two children, Bassy and Rashidat, are fighting against their deportation to Nigeria due to the threat of FGM upon return

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Campaigners gathered outside a Leeds court earlier this week to protest against the deportation of a Nigerian mother whose children face the threat of genital mutilation should they return to the African country. Afusat Saliu, 31, fled Nigeria in 2011 to protect her two children, four-year-old Bassy and Rashidat, two, from the brutal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and to escape a forced marriage to a man 40 years her senior. After being turned down for asylum status in 2012, she was once again turned away last month despite new evidence showing her children’s very real threat of FGM. A group of protestors gathered outside the UKBA Waterside Court, Kirkstall Road, on 29th April, to show their support for the local mother. Kate Jennings helped organise the event, by group ‘Leeds

No Borders’, and explained how her friend, Afusat, is in ‘real danger’ should she be forced to go back to Nigeria. “If she is deported back we fear that her children will have to face FGM,” she explained. “What’s totally crazy about this situation is that the government is about to pass a law that says FGM is illegal in this country and that we should do everything in our power to protect people who face it. “Yet, at the same time, they are here, trying to deport two children, whose risk is very evident that they would get cut should they go back. “Afusat is such an active member of t h e

Roseline Akhalu, also from Nigeria but living in Leeds, came to the UK 10 years ago and said she did

not understand why Afusat was not given permission to live in the country. “We are so surprised to see that Afi and her children are still facing deportation,” she said. “We come here to survive, to escape persecution, so I do not know why they want to deport her. “She is an FGM survivor herself and if she was to take her children back to Nigeria she would not be able to do anything to protect them. “This country has a right to protect them and that is why we are here.” The Leeds No Borders group were also protesting against the running of the country’s Yarl’s Woods Immigration Removal Centre which made headlines last month following the death of a detainee. Ms Akhalu, who has also been detained twice at the premises, added: “There is no freedom there. You are treated like a cow. Immigrants and asylum seekers are treated like illegals in that place. “The UN were recently banned HELP: from going in there so we are Roseline Akhalu asking ‘what are they hiding?’ and has lived in the are calling for an independent UK for 10 years investigation to get it shut down.” and believes her If you would like to show your friend, Afusat support to keep Afusat Saliu and Saliu, is being her two children in the country mistreated by please visit change.org. the UK Home Office

Giving back to community

Forty five community groups across West Yorkshire have received a share of £218,000 in the first round of grants under the Safer Communities Fund. Money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act is fed into this single community pot exclusively for local initiatives. At an event at Tong High School in Bradford on Thursday 1st May, successful applicants were awarded the thousands of pounds in cash. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson said: “As funding cuts continue to impact on charities and voluntary organisations, I am delighted to be able to provide these groups with the money that will allow them to provide an invaluable service to our local communities.”

DANGEROUS: The rise of anti-social behaviour from users of quad bikes in busy areas has many residents calling for them to be banned

Quad bike menace By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

The use of quad bikes in Bradford, in particular, has been on the rise in busy local areas and many have slated them as a menace and called for rules to tighten on their use. The law currently does not require them to be registered at point of sale, nor are they legally obligated to display a number plate. Such vehicles, are untaxed and uninsured, are not only a major nuisance to residents, they can be highly dangerous to pedestrians. This week the government has said that it has no plans to register off-road vehicles, despite the high level of incidents of anti-social behaviour in Bradford involving these vehicles. Mother of three, Rashida, from the Bradford 3 area said: “I have seen them doing wheelies myself on Leeds Road. “Because the weather has started to get nice now, the quad bikes are coming out. Just last week I was crossing the road with my children just before the quad bike zoomed out of no where onto the road

from a street joining Leeds Road. “I’m sure the rider thought he was being really clever doing his wheelies, but not only was it a ridiculous and totally unnecessary sight, a couple of cars swerved on the busy road to avoid hitting him. “I was terrified. I wondered what his mother would think of her son playing such a stupid stunt like that on a busy road, not only endangering himself but others too.” Due to their speed and manoeuvrability, off-road vehicles are often used illegally and unsafely in busy residential and commercial areas by those involved in crime and acts of anti-social behaviour. The Police are unable to safely pursue those on off road vehicles and are currently unable to trace any acts back to the owners or potential users as they are currently unregistered. This results in crimes going unpunished, which only further encourages the use of these vehicles, exacerbating the problem. Bradford had called on the Government to introduce compulsory registration of offroad vehicles in order to reduce antisocial behaviour and improve safety in

Bradford, but the response from Stephen Hammond MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State from the Department of Transport, states that they have no plans to introduce compulsory registration of off road vehicles. In 1994 the DVLA introduced a voluntary scheme to register off road motorcycles, which was extended to all mechanically propelled vehicles, which are used off road. Whilst the Department of Transport states the Government takes the use of unregistered vehicles on the road very seriously and is working with the Police to tackle these problems, they refuse to implement the one policy that allows Police to take action. Police say off-road motorcycles and quad bikes are a ‘constant issue’ in Bradford and officers said many of the vehicles were not road-legal and riders often did not wear helmets. Recently MP John Mann suggested unregistered and unlicensed quads and motorbikes were being used by drug dealers to hide and despatch caches of drugs.

Wash Yorkshire Fire Service By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

SUPPORT: Watch Commander, Andy Wooler, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and organised last month’s car wash event in aid of children also suffering from cancer, pictured with Huddersfield firefighter, and fellow car-washer, Mohammed Quadafi

A team of firefighters swapped hoses and hard hats for sponges and buckets last month as the Huddersfield community came together to raise money for a children’s charity. Last year, Watch Commander, Andy Wooler, had his life turned upside down as he was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was forced to initially spend one week at Leeds General Infirmary. It was here, that the brave 45year-old dad first encountered the Yorkshire children’s cancer charity, Candlelighters - based at the LGI’s Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Day Unit. From that day he decided he was going to help the group in whatever way he could and last month a community car wash was held at

Huddersfield Fire Station. With firefighters hosing down cars rather than flames, the day was a huge success, raising more than £2,000. Andy said if it was not for the support of his friends and family the day would not have been possible. “My wife, friends, volunteers, colleagues, whoever we could get really came on down and helped us raise this great amount,” he said. “The support from the guys here was fantastic. The on-duty crew were called out a couple of times so just had to drop the sponges and off they went but when they came back they would help again. “The off-duty personnel also came in and helped out which was a

Firefighters raise thousands for children’s charity massive help.” He added: “I’ve always said that I was happy working here with the West Yorkshire Fire Service but I didn’t realise how much support I really had until I unfortunately needed it.” Mohammed Quadafi has been

working as a firefighter for 13 years and has known Andy since 2007. After helping out at the car wash he explained how important it was that all the crew showed support for their colleague. “The diagnosis was obviously bad but at times like this it is great to see

Andy back in work,” he said. “When he told us about the idea for the car wash we all rallied around. It was great to get together and do something for such an important cause and the whole idea for the car wash was fantastic.”

SURPRISE: Children from Raising Explorers were given a special treat last week as a Ferrari pulled up in the club’s car park

An afterschool club in Bradford gave its ‘exceptional’ pupils a taste of the fast lane last week as children were commemorated for their exceptional hard work, progress and achievements in their studies. Raising Explorers, a club in the city which helps children with their homework and religious studies, hired a red Ferrari for the day as children got a super surprise of their own. The event was organised to congratulate the children on their hard work and progress in school as well as the success of a recent fundraising event. All the children got the chance to

experience what riding in the supercar was like as they each got behind the wheel for a not-to-be-forgotten experience. Driven by a chauffeur, the Ferrari also acted as a ‘motivation tool’, according to childcare and progress manager at Raising Explorers, Istihaq Khan, who added that it was a ‘lovely opportunity’ to celebrate the achievements of the young Explorers. He said: “It was great for the students to be rewarded for their efforts as the ride in the Ferrari without a doubt acted as a great motivator. “A big thank you to everyone, including the children for all your efforts and to Evolution Motor Group for their cooperation, in inspiring the children with their jaw dropping Ferrari.” Mr Khan also explained how the group caters for children from all backgrounds and continues to be a success in the city centre. “Raising Explorers is based in an area of Bradford where our research showed that many parents struggle to balance work with childcare needs as there wasn’t any local adequate afterschool and weekend childcare available…The quality of any such childcare was either poor or simply non-existent and didn’t meet the requirements of the parents and the children. “Therefore since Raising Explorers was launched in 2012 such values have been integral to the life of the After School Club and we have now become one of the city’s most popular out of school childcare provisions. “In our most recent inspection by Ofsted, the inspector described us

Youngsters get behind the wheel as ‘Outstanding’ and exceeding Ofsted requirements for an Out of School Club.” One father, Javez, whose child attends the centre, spoke of how much he appreciated the efforts put in by all at Raising Explorers. “My wife is a full time carer for my eldest child and I’m a driving instructor,” he said. “Previously it used to be a struggle to finish work, pick up my child from school and then make the time to help him with his homework. “We always felt guilty that due to the demands of working life and circumstances we were unable to give the right attentive care and help to our child when he came

home from school. “Now that he goes to Raising Explorers, I am so relieved that he is getting the best support he can possibly get and our son loves going there. “Raising Explorers offer so much value for money when it comes to childcare and that’s what I love about them.” Raising Explorers are open seven days a week offering tuition in all subjects, religious education, homework support and general drop in sessions for children aged between five and 15. Student charged after teacher stabbed to death KILLED: Ann Maguire, Corpus Christi’s Head of Year 11 and Spanish teacher, was stabbed to death in the classroom last week

Leeds school mourns the loss of ‘inspirational’ teacher By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A 15-year-old student from a Leeds secondary school was arrested and charged with murder last week after a teacher was stabbed to death in the classroom. 61-year-old Ann Maguire was stabbed numerous times by a knifewielding student at Corpus Christi College, Osmondthorpe, on Monday 28th April. Hundreds have left tributes outside the school to pay their respect to the former Spanish teacher and Head of Year 11 who had been in the profession for more than 40 years. Police were called to the scene moments after the incident occurred and took the pupil into custody. Questions regarding the safety of schools in Leeds were raised following the tragic incident yet Det

Supt Simon Beldon reassured local residents that it was an isolated incident. He said: “We would like to reassure people that this has been an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to pupils or staff at the school. “The situation is under control and officers, including safer schools officers and members of the local neighbourhood policing team, are currently at the school and are liaising closely with staff. “The rest of the school is continuing to operate as normal and we would ask that parents do not attend the site unless directly requested to do so by the school. “Our inquiries are at a very early stage but the full circumstances of this incident will obviously be the

subject of a full and thorough investigation.” The attack comes 18 years after headmaster Philip Lawrence was stabbed to death outside the gates of his school. Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said the fatal stabbing was ‘a truly awful thing to have happened to a teacher in the course of her work to educate the next generation’. “Appalling events like this are thankfully very rare indeed but the death of any teacher in her place of work, which should be a place of safety, is devastating,” she said. “Our condolences go to the family and friends of this teacher, and to students and colleagues at the school.”

SAD: Students at Corpus Christi laid flowers down at the school’s gate following the incident as they were consoled by fellow pupils, teachers and parents

Why young people are being tempted away from taking a university degree At the age of 18, Memona Mohammad was all set for university. She had three good, science A levels and offers to study for a degree in biomedical sciences. But she chose to sign up for a higher apprenticeship with BT instead. Now 21, she will complete the scheme this September. If all goes well, she will have a foundation degree, a level 4 NVQ and the chance to go onto take a master’s, paid for by BT. After three years on a salary, Mohammad has no student loan to pay off and has a job lined up as one of BT’s ethernet planners. “The guarantee of a job definitely played a part in my decision,” she says.“But it was also the chance to join a global company and develop my career in IT while learning on the job.” Once considered the preserve of manual trades for the less academically gifted, apprenticeships are now available at three levels, from GCSE to foundation degree, in industries ranging from accountancy to zookeeping. The number of people starting an apprenticeship grew from 175,000 in 2005/06 to more than 510,000 in 2012/13. Most are now offered in the service sectors, such as business administration, retail and health. Since 2010, most of those starting apprenticeships have been female. “We’ve had significant growth over the past decade, although we have probably plateaued at about half a million,” says Karen Woodward, divisional apprenticeship director at the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS). “But while the quantity may have stabilised, we are still seeing an increase in the quality.” Woodward believes that the growing popularity of apprenticeships is due to their mutual benefit to apprentice and employer. “An apprenticeship is not a training course,” she says. “It’s a job with a salary and an employer with a vacancy.” Employees who have been apprentices tend to be loyal to their employer and, according to the Centre for Economics and Business

Research, are £214 a week more productive than the average worker. The flexibility of modern apprenticeships has encouraged employers to increase the number and scope of the schemes they offer. BT now runs 11 different schemes, for example, which will take on more than 700 apprentices this year. Damian Brown, head of accredited learning and apprenticeships at BT, says: “In the past five years it has become possible to tailor schemes both to the needs of the apprentices and to what we need as a business.” Apprenticeships are promoted nationally by the NAS, part of the Skills Funding Agency. It supports employers and runs an apprentice“matching service”. At regional level, a number of local enterprise partnerships have set up“hubs” to promote

apprenticeships with local industry and small to medium-sized enterprises. In Yorkshire, for example, eight local authorities have combined to create the Leeds City Region Apprenticeship Programme, a £4.6m scheme designed to offer 2,500 new apprenticeships by autumn 2015. Similar initiatives are underway in Nottingham, Greater Manchester and the West of England. Demand for apprenticeships continues to outstrip supply, however: the NAS receives around 12 applications for every position. And despite all efforts to escape their blue collar image, apprenticeships remain far more popular in the former industrial heartlands than in the South East. According to Demos, the think tank, London requires 30,000 more apprentices to catch up with the rest of the country.

Children’s Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House Hospice in Leeds. Commenting on the event, Rifhat said: “This is a great opportunity for women from all communities to come together and have some fun while exercising and at the same time raising money for these two great causes. “The money raised will go towards saving lives and improving the health care of very ill children and as mothers we have a real empathy with the great work the two agencies both do.” The ‘ladies-only’ event takes place on Sunday 18th May at Carr Manor Community School. Lawsuit claims FBI use ‘No-fly- list’ to coerce Muslims into informing A recently filed case on behalf of four American Muslims in a US district of New York, has accused the US attorney general, Eric Holder, the FBI director, James Comey, the homeland security secretary, Jeh Johnson, and two dozen FBI agents of creating an atmosphere where innocent Muslims are forbidden from flying. The motive apparently was so that the FBI can use this as leverage to get them to snitch on

their communities. In recent years Muslim community leaders in the US have stated that they feel law enforcement at times considers them a target. Material demonising Muslims and Islam has been present in FBI counter-terrorism training, which the bureau has conceded was inappropriate. The New York police department recently shut down a

unit tasked with spying on Muslim businesses, mosques and community centres in New York and New Jersey. The lawsuit seeks not only the plaintiffs’ removal from the no-fly list but also the establishment of a more robust legal mechanism to contest placement upon it. “This policy and set of practices by the FBI is part of a much broader set of policies that reflect overpolicing in Muslim-American

£4,500 fine for ‘filthy’ takeaway

A Calderdale takeaway has been handed a hefty fine after inspectors found the premises to have poor food hygiene which was putting people’s health at risk. Calderdale Council Environmental Health officers visited the Seraj Takeaway, at Bull Close Lane, Halifax, and identified a number of serious food hygiene offences. At Halifax Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 23rd April, Mr Mohammed Nazir, the owner of the takeaway was prosecuted by Calderdale Council for offences identified on two visits by officers on 28th February 2013, 4th April 2013 and a subsequent visit on 2nd May 2013. The court was told that Mr Nazir had been advised and directed to improve on many visits, yet on the unannounced

visit on 2nd May 2013, officers had to dispose of a large amount of food from the premises in order to protect potential customers. Despite further direction and instruction given to Mr Nazir, the second and third inspections identified that conditions had not improved. Mr Nazir was charged with 16 offences, and fined a total of £4,500 – £500 for failing to keep food at the appropriate temperatures, £1,500 for placing foods at a risk of contamination, £1,000 for having filthy premises, £1,000 for failing to maintain a food safety management system and £500 for food handlers failing to ensure personal hygiene. He was also ordered to pay full costs to the council of £1,974 and a victim surcharge of £120.

FILTHY: The Seraj Takeaway, in Halifax, was fined for its ‘filthy premises’ which put customer’s health at risk

communities,” said Diala Shamas, one of the lawyers for the four plaintiffs. The no-fly list is among the most opaque post-9/11 measures. It is maintained by the FBI and implemented at airports by the Department of Homeland Security. Few know they’ve been placed on it, and those who do face a complicated redress process to have themselves removed. The new lawsuit alleges that the opacity contributes to watchlist abuse. According to the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Centre, which maintains the list, there were approximately 16,000 people, fewer than 500 of them Americans, on the no-fly list

as of September 2011. A larger pool of data that feeds the no-fly list and other government watchlists, known as the Terrorist Screening Database, contemporaneously contained records of 420,000 people. Famously it included Nelson Mandela until 2008. The government’s policy is to not to confirm or deny someone’s placement upon a watchlist. Several earlier lawsuits have attempted to get people off the nofly list. In February Rahinah Ibrahim became the first since 9/11 to win such a case, after demonstrating that the FBI adder her name by mistake. She had been unable to fly since 2004.

‘Unfair Dismissal’

JUSTICE: Raj Mattu, a former doctor at the University of Coventry Hospital, was sacked after he expressed concerns about the safety of patients

A sacked doctor from Coventry says he was ‘absolutely relieved’ after a tribunal ruled that he had been unfairly sacked after raising concerns about patient safety. Dr Raj Mattu, 54, was sacked from his role at the University of Coventry Hospital more than three years ago. After expressing concerns over the wellbeing of two patients, who had died in crowded bays at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry, Employment Judge Pauline Hughes ruled Dr Mattu was subject to ‘many detriments’ by the trust as a consequence of being a whistle-blower. He had claimed that five patients being allocated to four-bed bays in December 1999, prevented vital equipment being used to save the life of a 35-year-old man, and publicly announced his views in September 2001. He was suspended less than six months after the incident on the charges of bullying a junior doctor before, five years later, in July 2007, he was allowed back to work and later cleared of any bullying charges in March 2009. However, less than one year on he was sacked by the hospital trust in an incident which Judge Hughes said Dr Mattu ‘did not

cause or contribute to’. Dr Mattu had claimed that the Trust relieved him of his duties purely because of his whistleblowing and that, for more than a decade, his livelihood was destroyed. “Scores of false allegations, some of them

Sacked doctor was wrongfully dismissed after whistle-blowing quite heinous, were put forward,” he said to BBC Radio 4. “The saddest thing out of all of this for me is that the people who have lost out the most are the patients and the public because for 13 years the trust management have prevented me from looking after patients. “They have also, in the way they have treated me, discouraged any further whistleblowers in the NHS from coming forward and risking having their career and livelihood destroyed.”

JUSTICE:

Six-year sentence for hammer-wielding thief A family, who were ‘terrified’ when their Leeds shop was subject to an armed-attacked last year, have described the sentencing of their assailant as ‘justice’ served. 38-year-old Jonathan Kear was handed a six year prison sentence last week for theft at Neil’s Store, in Kirkstall, Leeds, on 28th October 2013. The store’s owners, Mr Thakor Patel, 74, and his wife Dhaniben, 73, were in the back with their daughter-in-law, Vilas, at the time when Kear came through the doors with hammer in hand. After threatening the family members with his weapon, he escaped with bottles of spirits and cigarettes from behind the counter. Three days later, Kear returned to the store to buy some sweets for children on Halloween and within half an hour of leaving the premises he was arrested by West Yorkshire police. Mr Patel says he was relieved to see Kear

detained by police and explained how he was caught so soon. “It was very good to see him arrested,” he explained. “We have been here for more than 40 years and never had an incident like this so it was all a strange experience. “After the first attack the police installed a panic alarm behind the counter so when Jonathan came back my daughter-in-law pushed it and within three minutes there were three police cars here.” He added: “We told him during the attack that ‘we know who you are’ because his only disguise was a pair of sunglasses. To see him come into the store so soon after was just stupid.” Kear was described as a ‘regular customer’ by the store’s owners and had previously never caused a problem. Vilas Patel, 50, added that she had never experienced anything like it before. “We came out from the sitting room to see

him stood there shouting at us, telling us not to move or he will hit us with the hammer,” she explained. “My mother-in-law could not sleep for two days after the incident so to see him get handed a six-year sentence and a restraining order from the store is something we are pleased to hear.” The family’s co-operation with police was also praised by Investigating Officer PC Mark Lynam. He said: “This was a targeted attack on a local store which the suspect frequently visited. “The victims of this crime are elderly upstanding members of the community who have run their shop since 1971 without being subjected to crime. “Mr Patel and his family have been excellent witnesses and were crucial in facilitating a prosecution in this case.”

UKIP INSULTS UPDATE: “Lenny Henry should leave Britain”

www.asianexpress.co.uk

May 2014 - 1st Edition

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

After the racism row that broke out last week over the UKIP’s European election campaign posters, a UKIP election candidate has suggested that British comedian Lenny Henry should emigrate to a ‘black country’. Enfield candidate William Henwood, who has since resigned, was responding to recent comments made by Henry that there was a poor representation of ethnic minorities on British television. On his Twitter account, he tweeted: "He should emigrate to a black country. He does not have to live

with whites." UKIP continues to insist that the party was "non-racist, non-sectarian" and that "any comments made by members that fail to uphold these values will be duly investigated and acted upon". Mr Henwood is not the only candidate to have extreme views revealed in the past week since the party's manifesto was launched. UKIP Camden candidate Magnus Nielsen claimed that 70 per cent of UK mosques had been "taken over" by "fundamentalists". On his Facebook page, he posted outrageous comments which said: "Islam is organised crime under religious camouflage. Any Muslim who is not involved in organised

crime is not a 'true believer', practising Islam as Mohammed commanded." In another incident, UKIP’s Andre Lampitt who appeared in the party's latest election broadcast was suspended after allegedly expressing "repellent CONTROVERSIAL: William Henwood made the comments about Lenny Henry via Twitter

views". He apparently posted racist and anti-Islamic remarks as well as inappropriate comments about Labour leader Ed Miliband on Twitter. UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he was "very angry" that Mr Lampitt had been given a role in the broadcast. Despite a bruising week of controversies, a poll suggests Mr Farage's party has surged into the lead in the European election contest. UKIP recorded 31 per cent support in the YouGov survey for the Sunday Times, three points ahead of Labour, with the Conservatives trailing in third place with 19 per cent.

PRAISED: Dixons Trinity Academy was praised by Ofsted inspectors, who noted that 100 per cent of parents said they would recommend the school and 100 per cent of pupils enjoyed attending. Pictured - Principal, Mr Luke Sparkes with pupils from Dixons Trinity Academy

‘OUTSTANDING’ The country’s first ‘Outstanding’ secondary academy free school By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford secondary school, which was celebrating last month after becoming the first of its kind to be labelled ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, is continuing in its quest to ‘keep improving’. Dixons Trinity Academy, set up by the Dixons Academy Trust, opened in September 2012 and has since become the first secondary academy free school in the country to receive the education inspector’s top honour. Located on Trinity Road, it serves some of the city’s most deprived areas with half of the attending pupils living in Bradford’s five poorest wards. Yet, since opening their doors, the school has received nothing but praise for their innovative teaching methods which have helped children excel above many people’s expectations. Principal and Future Leader, Mr Luke Sparkes, explained how the current teaching methods in the school are reflective of a different culture which helps students thrive in their environment. “Our school culture is modelled on what I saw in New York,” he explained. “Excellent teaching is central but we put lots of work into building a joyful school culture and this is clear in every class and dominates daily schoolwide celebrations.” Across the school premises,

large mission statements are visible which act as ‘motivation tools’ for staff and students. Mr Sparkes added that his aim is to ensure every pupil, whom leaves Dixons Trinity Academy in Year 13, can go on to ‘whatever university degree they want’ or a ‘top end apprenticeship scheme’.

Other schools may do this with a selection of ‘gifted’ pupils, but we take everyone in the year because it is our aim to give every child the chance to attend one of these top universities.” Currently only Year 7 and 8 are operating at the school with a new year group introduced every

“Excellent teaching is central but we put lots of work into building a joyful school culture and this is clear in every class and dominates daily schoolwide celebrations.” “We only want the very best for every single one of these children,” he explained. “In our open days, we don’t show children around the school, we take them over to Leeds University to show them where they can be with hard work, if they are willing to climb that mountain. “When the students are in their first year, we take all of them to Oxford or Cambridge University.

September until the school reaches full capacity. Mr Sparkes added that he did feel that the school was performing extremely well before the Ofsted inspection, and subsequent report was published, and found it hard to keep the news from the pupils. “When we first heard of the ‘Outstanding’ award we couldn’t even tell the students because we

had to wait for Ofsted to make the official announcement,” he said. “When we finally did they were overjoyed and there was a couple of tears shed by our teaching staff. Without the fantastic, dedicated staff we have here, it wouldn’t have been possible so they deserve a lot of plaudits as well as the students.” The ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted report mentioned that teaching is of a ‘consistently high quality’ and the curriculum ensures that ‘students achieve highly and rapidly develop the personal skills and qualities needed for success’.’ Following a visit to Dixons Trinity Academy, Schools Minister Lord Nash, added: “It was a pleasure to visit Dixons Trinity Academy and I congratulate the staff and pupils on the publication of their Outstanding Ofsted report. “I was very impressed by the innovative policies they have put in place which are underpinned by a constant drive to achieve the best for every child. “I am delighted that my Department has been able to support the vision of the Dixons Academy Trust and the Principal Luke Sparkes in setting up a school that demands and delivers excellence for all. “I am also delighted that Luke himself is a product of the Future Leaders programme and, therefore, part of a growing network of leaders improving challenging schools across England.”

Scammed out of thousands

Bradford resident warns others ‘don’t be as foolish as he was’

SCAMMED: The scam began when the Bradford resident was approached by a mysterious man, going by the name of ‘Mousa’, who offered to buy Mr Hamid’s Lexus

STONES: The value of the stones is still unknown yet after Mr Hamid heard that they were potentially worth tens of thousands of pounds, he was quickly willing to part with £3,000 to have them in his possession

What started off as a routine trip to an autocentre and bike shop, soon turned into a scam for one Bradford man. 50-year-old bus driver Abdul Hamid’s story is one which happened over the space of just two expensive days. He found himself losing £3,000, and gaining possession of two mysterious stones and involved three unknown characters who he has not seen since the day of the trade. Now he is warning others not to make the same mistakes he did, in the hope of saving people thousands of pounds. “Looking back I do feel embarrassed that it happened to me but now I want to let others know that this is happening in Bradford,” Mr Hamid said. “I let greed get the better of me for that one moment and now I have lost my money and just have these two rocks which I don’t even know the real worth of.” On Monday 14th April, Mr Hamid met the first man, who called himself ‘Mousa’, at Halfords in the city centre. The Bradford resident was approached by Mousa who enquired about the cost of his car as his ‘friend’ was in need of a new motor so the pair went to see him. Upon arrival, the second man, who called himself ‘Mr Mumbai’, got in the car with ten stones which seemed to have gems inside them. After inspecting them, Mousa, driven by Mr Hamid, took them to be seen by his friend and jeweller, a man who called himself ‘Mr Williams’.

Mr Williams declared the rocks to have a value of approximately £385 per gram, which worked out as £48,000 when cleaned and so struck a deal with Mousa to buy two stones. When Mousa and Mr Hamid returned to see Mr Mumbai to purchase the two stones, Mousa was told he would have to pay a deposit in ‘pound sterling’, as Mr Mumbai was from another country and had no English currency, if he was to have them for a final price of £29,000. Following this conversation, the three men went their separate ways and Mr Hamid says he thought that was the end of his connection with the men. “After he told Mousa he wants cash, I could tell that it wasn’t going to happen there and then,” Mr Hamid explained. “Looking back, it is perhaps clear to see that they wanted me to hear the fake value of these socalled ‘gems’ so that I would be tempted to get involved with any sort of deal. “But at that time I didn’t really think anything of it.” The next day, Mousa phoned Mr Hamid and said the trade was likely to be called off as he had only managed to gather £1,100 in cash. Mr Hamid, believing he could almost instantly double his investment, offered to pay the other £3,000 deposit as part of a deal which would benefit him financially. “My wife kept telling me not to do it but I was so convinced that it was a simple deal that I could not resist,” he explained.

“I thought I was going to be seeing these men again as they wanted to buy my car so I went to my bank and withdrew the cash for the exchange. “I remember asking Mousa why he didn’t sell the Rolex watch he was wearing to a pawn shop but he said he had tried and they needed a receipt which he didn’t have.” Mr Hamid and Mousa met Mr Mumbai in Foster Square, Bradford, on Tuesday 15th April where the exchange of cash was done in return for the two stones. After the deal, which again took place in Mr Hamid’s car, the targeted victim was then invited by Mr Mumbai to see where he was supposedly ‘staying’ whilst in Bradford. Mr Hamid got out of his car to walk with Mr Mumbai to the hotel and when he turned back to go to his car, Mousa had gone and Mr Mumbai was nowhere to be seen. “All I had left was the stones,” he said. “I tried calling both men but they did not answer their phones so I went to the police. “They told me there was nothing they could do as I had wilfully handed over the money so now I am stuck with these supposed gems and lost £3,000. “I just hope by telling others of my story that this won’t happen to anybody else.” Mr Hamid is currently waiting to see if the CCTV cameras at Halfords picked up any images of the man who called himself ‘Mousa’ and plans on getting the stones valued as his own investigation continues.

UK: The Jaipur Literature Festival will be showcased as part of the Southbank Centre’s ‘Alchemy’, which celebrates the arts and cultural context from the Indian subcontinent

Alchemy, which runs from 15th – 26th May, celebrates the arts and cultural context of the countries of the Indian subcontinent and their relationship with the UK. With a range of both ticketed and free events − from concerts by music stars to a food market in Southbank Centre Square, free fashion shows in the foyers to DJs spinning their discs alongside the River Thames − the site will come alive with the energy and vividness of work from and inspired by South Asia. Jude Kelly, Artistic Director, Southbank Centre, said: “For the fifth anniversary year of Alchemy, we are hosting the Jaipur Literature Festival as it visits the UK for the first time.

“The Jaipur Literature Festival is one of the largest, greatest and most innovative literature festivals in the world and to welcome it to the Southbank Centre as part of Alchemy is a real privilege. Adding this element to our festival this year makes it our most ambitious, exciting and collaborative Alchemy programme to date.” Namita Gokhale, author and coDirector of the Jaipur Literature Festival, said: “Within India, Jaipur Literature Festival, has grown to become a cultural catalyst, a colourful carnival of books, ideas and music – we are excited to be bringing this energy and some of our region’s finest writers to London audiences this May.” William Dalrymple, author and coDirector of the Jaipur Literature Festival, said: “The Jaipur Literature Festival has grown from 14 surprised tourists to a quarter of a million people in just eight years and it’s now the biggest free festival of literature in the world. “We can’t wait to show London a little taster of the energy, colour and literary brilliance, which has brought this about. At the Southbank Centre, some of our greatest contemporary writers and thinkers will bridge cultural, geographical and historical divides, taking our audiences on a journey right across the globe.”

18TH MAY - WHAT’S ON The Great Indian Metropolis Conversations across cityscapes by writers who have chronicled the inner life of the metropolis, infusing it with life and character

Myth and Memory Mythology in India is never static, but a living tradition that is recreated and reinterpreted everyday. A panel looks at mythic characters and archetypes as they exist in Indian society today as also in legacy of Hellenic cultures, mapping the journeys of myth and memory.

Bollywood via London London exists not only as a geographical entity but as a state of mind in the collective imagination of Indian celluloid. Film scholar Rachel Dwyer takes us through a medley of cinematic encounters with Londonistan, complete with song, dance and drama.

Sunset on Empire For nearly 200 years a small group of British officials administered vast areas of South Asia. In 1900 just over a thousand civil servants ruled a population of nearly 300 million people spread over a territory now covered by India, Pakistan, Burma and Bangladesh. It was, as Stalin said with a mixture of envy and annoyance, a 'ridiculous' situation. In its time, the Raj, as administered by the Indian Civil Service, was regarded as efficient and incorruptible. Yet recent revisionist historians have questioned its competence and derided its altruism.

Who Will Rule the World Most authorities agree that the 21st century belongs to India and China, but beyond that consensus breaks down. Can India ever catch up with China? Will China fall apart due to its own unresolved contradictons? And what about Europe and Latin America? In addition to the day of talks in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, there will be free activities and workshops for families and children on the Clore Ballroom.

A ‘No’ to Mango

Back in the race

T

he British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (Bapio) has this week been unsuccessful in its Judicial Review claim against the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the General Medical Council (GMC), the doctors' regulatory body. Racial discrimination allegations sparked the Judicial Review claim in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Bapio began its legal battle against the RCGP and the GMC due to claims that the RCGP’s membership exam, the MRCGP, which doctors must pass to practise as a GP in the UK, discriminates against ethnic minority candidates. Bapio’s allegations against the RCGP (which conducts the exam) and the GMC (which is accountable for ensuring a fair process), included evidence that white candidates are four times more likely to pass the exam first time than minority ethnic candidates trained in the UK, and 14 times more likely than candidates trained overseas. Particular emphasis was drawn to the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA), where students are examined on their ability to demonstrate effective communication with patients and colleagues. At the Judicial Review hearing, Mr Justice Mitting rejected the claim by Bapio that the CSA should be declared unlawful. He found that the RCGP was neither racially discriminatory nor in breach of its public sector equality duty. Mr Justice Mitting said the claim had been brought in good faith and in the public interest. He then expressed hope that the case would lead to progress:

"the bringing of this claim is likely, in the end, to bring something of benefit to the medical profession." Mr Justice Mitting found that there was a disparity in results between different ethnic groups and stated that the RCGP must take action. He then expressed words of warning: "If it does not act and its failure to act is the subject of a further challenge in the future, it may well be that it will be held to have breached its duty," he said. "But, as of now, I am satisfied that it's not in breach of its duty." Mr Justice Mitting concluded by describing the outcome for Bapio as "if not a legal victory then a moral success". Bapio president Dr Ramesh Mehta expressed hope in the judge’s remarks: "Although we may have lost the battle at this time, we feel we have won the war because the Judge has also said to the RCGP that they must now take action". Whilst Bapio is undoubtedly disappointed with the judgment it seems that there could be a brighter future ahead for those ethnic minorities due to sit the examination. Mr Justice Mitting’s judgment could be seen as an invitation for Bapio to initiate further Judicial Review proceedings should the RCGP fail to take action to reduce the disparity in the results of the examination. This would not have been achieved without Bapio’s Judicial Review claim. We at Blacks have experience in handling Judicial Review proceedings and Medical Practice Law.

The European Union’s decision to ban the import of Indian Mangoes for 20 months has been criticised by the country who insist they have addressed any issue with previous shipments. New Delhi have officially appealed the decision after being informed that shipments of premium Alphonso mangoes would be blocked from May, through to December 2015, after consignments infested with fruit flies were found in Brussels. The UK currently imports a total of 56,205 tonnes of mangoes per year, of which 4,816 tonnes, 8.5per cent, come from India. It may not be the biggest trade in the world, but for many people it is their livelihood and by stopping the trade it is likely to affect many stakeholders at production levels. Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), a body affiliated with the

STOPPED: The EU will not import any more mangoes from India until December 2015 unless an appeal is approved

trade ministry, argued that the decision was a harsh one and believes it should be overturned. “Since we got to know about the issue in March, we've put in place an elaborate examination and certification procedure that addresses the issue raised by the EU,” he said . The FIEO and the trade ministry have asked Brussels to lift the ban, whilst local prices of

mangoes have fallen by approximately 15 per cent in the past few days affecting farmers across the country, Sahai added. The Middle East buys 80 percent of mango exports from India, the world's biggest producer of the fruit, accounting for about half of global output. Asia, excluding India, accounts for more than a third of world mango output.

India told to clamp down on IP crimes The United States have named India on a watch list for countries that aren't doing enough to fight intellectual-property crimes, warning of the proliferation of generic drugs and counterfeiting. The U.S. Trade Representative resisted lobbying by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and pharmaceutical industry to censure India with the ‘worst offender’ tag in its annual scorecard on how

well countries protect U.S. patents, copyrights and other intellectual property (IP) rights. The United States instead kept India, which is in the midst of elections, on its Priority Watch List along with China and eight other countries. It would start a special review of India in the fall and ‘redouble’ efforts to address concerns with the new government, the USTR said. Some were disappointed

that the USTR failed to name India as a ‘priority foreign country’ - a label that can eventually lead to trade sanctions or the loss of trade benefits - although others stressed it was not off the hook yet. A 19-year-old Muslim convert is still in hospital with ‘life-changing internal injuries’ after a man threw cleaning fluid on her. Aleena Rafiq, 19, formerly known as Vikki Horsman, was attacked on her doorstep and suffered serious facial burns, damaging her throat and lungs. 27-year-old Matthew Wood, who is alleged to have caused grievous bodily harm to Aleena Rafiq, has been remanded in custody by Wolverhampton magistrates. Aleena suffered serious facial burns when a mystery liquid, thought to be a harmful high-strength cleaning product, was thrown in her face as she answered a knock at the door at a property in MacDonald Close, Tividale, West Midlands. She also sustained internal injuries to her throat and lungs which have been described as life-threatening by doctors and she remains in a critical condition in hospital. Wood, appeared in the dock alongside his partner, Lisa Wood, and his mother, Debbie Wood, who are both charged with perverting the course of justice by removing or disposing of items connected to a serious offence. The defendants, all of Smethwick, near Birmingham, were ordered to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 11th July. Lisa Wood, 25, and her mother-in-law, 46, were granted conditional bail. Matthew Wood, is also further accused of wounding Mohammed Rafiq, who answered the door with Aleena at the address. Two other men, aged 23 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed and an 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of wounding was given bail.

Clarkson in ‘N-word’ controversy Top Gear presenter apologises over racial slur

APOLOGY: Jeremy Clarkson found himself embroiled in a race row after mumbling the ‘n word’ in a nursery rhyme whilst filming for BBC’s Top Gear

BBC presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, has issued a video apology this week after being caught on camera mumbling the ‘n word’ during the filming of a Top Gear episode in February 2013. The 54-year-old had initially denied using the word at all, yet after the Daily Mirror published the video online; he made a U-Turn and took to the internet to offer a public apology. Clarkson was seen reciting the

nursery rhyme, ‘Eeny meeny miney moe’, in the episode when, in a clip which was eventually cut from the televised programme, he mumbled ‘catch a n***** by his toe’. Despite the clip not being used, and an alternative version, whereby he replaced the ‘n word’ with teacher, being aired, the film was leaked embroiling Clarkson in a race row. In his apology, Clarkson said he was ‘mortified’ and ‘horrified’ to see the clip. He said: “It is a word I loathe and I did everything in my power to make sure that version did not appear in the programme that was transmitted. “In fact I have here the note I sent at the time to the production office and it says: ‘I didn't use the n-word here but I've just listened through my headphones and it sounds like I did. Is there another take that we could use?’

“Please be assured I did everything in my power to not use that word.” He then ended the statement saying he was ‘begging for your forgiveness’ and that ‘my efforts weren't quite good enough’. The BBC said they had disciplined the presenter but he would not be sacked. A statement read: “Jeremy Clarkson has set out the background to this regrettable episode. We have made it absolutely clear to him the standards the BBC expects on air and off. “We have left him in no doubt about how seriously we view this.” Clarkson was in the middle of a separate racism row just last month after an episode, filmed in Burma and Thailand, was aired. A scene, in which the Top Gear presenters built a bridge over the River Kwai, saw Clarkson say: ‘That

is a proud moment, but there's a slope on it’, as an Asian man walked across it. However, not everybody is quick to attack the car enthusiast with many supporting him, saying it was simply a mistake. Education minister, Michael Gove, stepped in to defend the presenter saying: “As I understand Jeremy Clarkson has apologised, the word in question is horrendous and shouldn't be used. “It seems to me this was a word he never intended to mutter, never intended to broadcast, he's been clear in his apology and I think we should leave matter there.” Tweet us, at @AsianExpressUK, or email, comments@ asianexpress.co.uk, your opinion of whether Jeremy Clarkson should be punished further for his actions or if it was just a mistake.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN FAMILY LAW

47

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing the recent changes in the area of private family law.

From 22 April 2014 there are various changes which will have an impact on applicants wishing to commence Children Act proceedings. The Children and Families Act 2014 sets out the following major changes: • Introduction of Single Family Court – A national court for all family proceedings in England & Wales. Although local county courts will still exist to accept counter applications such as divorce, all applications relating to children will have to be issued from a centralised Designated Family Court. The case will then be allocated by the ‘gatekeeping team’ to the most appropriate court and level of judge. • Compulsory family mediation – Courts will no longer accept applications to issue Children Act proceedings (unless a specified exemption applies) until applicants have first attended a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This is now a compulsory requirement for separating couples to resolve financial matters and arrangements for children. • New terminology – ‘Contact’ and ‘residence’ orders will be removed and instead will be called ‘child arrangement orders’. This is to highlight the court’s primary concern of the welfare of the child. • New rules on evidence – Expert evidence (e.g. local authority reports) will only be permitted if it is ‘necessary’ to assist the court to resolve disputes justly. • Court fees – There is no longer a court fee for injunction applications, such as nonmolestation and occupation orders, given the urgency and sensitivity of such applications. I deal with all areas of private family law. Contact me for a confidential chat or to book your free 30 minute face-to-face consultation.

Oldham drug

crackdown

16 men and one woman have been arrested in raids as part of an operation to crackdown on drug dealing in Oldham. They were arrested when Manchester Police raided 14 addresses just after 6am on Wednesday 30th April 2014. Officers from Oldham's Operation Caminada Organised Crime Unit launched the operation, codenamed Operation Alamos, as their response to community concerns that street drug dealing was a problem in the area. This operation forms part of Operation Challenger, which is the Force's strategy for tackling organised crime groups across Greater Manchester. These arrests came after months of investigations by officers from the Oldham Organised Crime Unit into the distribution of heroin. In the raids this morning, 16 men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences, after officers executed warrants across Oldham and Burnley. More than 80 officers were involved in the raids and included officers from the Oldham Division and force tactical aid unit supported by Lancashire Police. Extra officers from Oldham's Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be patrolling the area from today and the next few days to provide a visible presence and reassurance to the community.

"This operation has taken months of intricate planning and dedication by

officers from Operation Caminada. "The people of Oldham have told us that they want drugs and drug dealing tackled across the borough and I hope that today's action highlights how seriously we take these crimes. Airline passengers faced disruption on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning as computer problems caused extended queues at immigration desks. Lengthy lines started forming at airport terminals across the country after a fault on UK Border Force computers earlier in the afternoon. Extra staff were drafted in to try and reduce the queue whilst a government spokesperson said the problem was being rectified at the time. He said: “We are currently experiencing temporary IT problems which may add to the time taken to conduct passport checks. “We are working to rectify this

BUSY: Hundreds of customers were made to wait for more than two hours before they could get through passport control

issue and are providing extra staff to get passengers through the controls as quickly as possible. Our priority remains security of the border. “We apologise for any additional time this adds to passengers' journeys.” Passengers across the country reported problems at passport

control desks, mostly when trying to enter the country. The problem had a particular impact on non-EU passengers. A Heathrow spokesman said: “There are some longer queues than normal in the terminals but we have spoken to border force and they are putting on extra staff.

“Obviously we want to sort the issue out but not risk the integrity of the border controls.” A Birmingham airport spokesman added: “We are aware of the glitch and the impact it is having at the moment. “It appears to be getting progressively worse but we are

hoping it will be sorted out soon. “People should be able to get off the plane, it is those coming through the immigration process which it is frustrating.” Airports across the country were affected yet government officials insist the problem has now been rectified.

Hotspots for phone theft revealed

Home Secretary announces new measures in the way police use their powers

London, Leeds and Northampton are the three UK areas where mobile phone owners are most likely to have their device stolen, according to a new report by an insurance company. Protect Your Bubble, which specialises in insuring modern technology,; found that in London 18 per cent of insurance claims are for theft of a mobile phone, the highest in the UK. Leeds was second, on 16per cent. “Gadget owners can never be too cautious,” claimed Stephen Ebbett, director of Protect Your Bubble. “Everyday we cart around hundreds, or even thousands of pounds' worth of hightech gear, such as smartphones, tablets, cameras and e-readers. “This makes many of us prime targets for thieves. Should you be unlucky enough to fall victim to mobile theft, specialist gadget insurance will cover you by replacing your stolen handset. “The good news is that we're seeing mobile thefts drop. So far, 9 per cent of mobile claims we've received in 2014 have been for theft, compared to 11 per cent for the same period last year. “But that doesn't mean smartphone users should be any less vigilant. People can reduce their risk of being targeted by keeping their mobiles out of sight in public. Carry them in a pocket or bag with a zip, rather than your trouser pocket, or in your hand.”

Stop & search reform Forces participating in the scheme must

· Record the outcome of stops in more detail to show the link

– or lack of a link – between the object of the search and its outcome, allowing an assessment of how well forces interpret the “reasonable grounds for suspicion” they are supposed to have. They must also record a broader range of outcomes, such as penalty notices and cautions, so it can be understood how successful each stop and search is. · Allow members of the public to apply to accompany officers on patrol to help improve the community’s understanding of the police. · Introduce a stop and search complaints “community trigger” so forces must explain to the public how powers are used if they receive a large volume of complaints. · The Home Secretary said forces must make clear that they will respect law established in the recent Roberts case by only using the Section 60 “no suspicion” stop and search power when it is “necessary to prevent incidents involving serious violence” rather than just “expedient” to do so. For those participating in the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme, use of Section 60 must also be authorised by a chief officer who must reasonably believe that violence “will” take place rather than “may” take place, as it stands now. Forces must also limit its application to 15 hours and communicate with communities before and after, so residents can be kept informed of the purpose and success of the operation.

Home Secretary Theresa May this week announced a major package of measures to reform the way the police use stop and search powers. While stop and search is undoubtedly an important police power, when it is misused it can be counter-productive. It can be an enormous waste of police time and, when innocent people are stopped and searched for no good reason, it is hugely damaging to the relationship between the police and the public. The Home Secretary today announced that she intends to revise the Police and Criminal Evidence Act Code of Practice A to make clear what constitutes “reasonable grounds for suspicion” – the legal basis upon which officers carry out the vast majority of stops. The revised code will emphasise that where officers are not using their powers properly they will be subject to formal performance or disciplinary proceedings. The Home Secretary has written to all Chief Constables and Police and Crime Commissioners, telling them to adhere to the code’s requirement that they should make arrangements for public scrutiny of stop and search records so communities can hold forces to account. She has told them that if they do not do so, the Government will bring forward legislation to make this a statutory requirement. The College of Policing is to review the national training of stop and search for all officers, and introduce an assessment of officers’ fitness to use stop and search powers. If they fail this assessment, they will not be allowed to use these powers. Furthermore, the Home Office will work with chief constables and PCCs to explore the possibility of recording

Theresa May

information on the use of stop and search via the new Emergency Services Network. The Home Secretary also announced earlier this week that this summer the Home Office and College of Policing will launch a new “Best Use of Stop and Search” scheme. It already has the backing of the Metropolitan Police, the biggest user of stop and search in the country, and all other police forces in England and Wales will be invited to sign up. Home Secretary Theresa May said: “Nobody wins when stop and search is misapplied. It is a waste of police time. It is unfair, especially to young black men. It is bad for public confidence in the police. “The proposals I have outlined today amount to a comprehensive package of reform. I believe that they should contribute to a significant reduction in the overall use of stop and search, better and more intelligence-led stop and search and improved stop-to-arrest ratios. “But I want to make myself absolutely clear: if the numbers do not come down, if stop and search does not become more targeted, if those stop-to-arrest ratios do not improve considerably, the Government will return with primary legislation to make these things happen.”

It’s not every day you pull over a former world heavyweight champion but that is exactly what happened to Officer Hitesh Patel in London last month. David Haye was the culprit of speeding when he was pulled over by pursuing officers. The 33-year-old is believed to have been speeding down a busy road in West London. As Officer Patel approached the car he is reported to have not given the boxer a fine, just a verbal warning. On top of that, Mr Patel progressed to take a ‘selfie’ with the former ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant which he would tweet to Haye later in the day. Alongside the message “’When we met after you were “enjoying” your car’, Mr Patel posted the picture on the social media site. The photo shows Haye smiling at the camera with his arm slung around PC Patel, who is dressed in uniform and also grinning broadly. The boxer later tweeted back, saying: ‘Thanks for not nicking me!’ Since the exchange of tweets, angry Twitter users have wrote of their disbelief that a celebrity can seemingly get away with speeding if they take time out to take a selfie.

Guilty verdict for carjackers

Two men have been found guilty of stabbing a businessman to death as he attempted to stop them stealing his sports car. The Old Bailey heard that Rory Gordon, 23, and Jae'Don Fearon, 21, only stood to gain £500 for the carjacking, during which Harjinder Singh Bhurji, 32, was stabbed in the heart. The pair drove off in his Mercedes SLK coupé, leaving Bhurji dying on the side of the road in Ilford, Essex, in the early hours of 13th September 2011. Jurors unanimously found Gordon guilty of murder while Fearon was convicted of Bhurji's manslaughter after being found not guilty of murder. A third defendant, Andre Campbell, 23, was found guilty of a charge of handling stolen goods after selling the victim's iPhone for £100. Adjourning sentencing to 27th May, Judge Michael Topolski told Gordon: “You have been convicted of a brutal murder of an innocent man. A brutal murder committed with a knife in the course of a commission of a crime, and all for perhaps £500.”

Adams arrested over 1972 murder

Northern Ireland police are questioning Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams over the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville, his party said on Wednesday, after police said detectives investigating the case had arrested a 65-year-old man. Adams said in a statement that he was ‘innocent of any part’ in the death of McConville, a widowed mother of 10 who was abducted and murdered by the IRA in 1972, one of the most controversial crimes of Northern Ireland's sectarian violence. “I believe that the killing of Jean McConville and the secret burial of her body was wrong and a grievous injustice to her and her family,” said Adams, who has always denied membership of the Irish Republican Army, which admitted carrying out the murder. McConville's body was found on a beach in the Republic of Ireland in 2003. As the head of the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, Adams was for many the face of Irish militant nationalism during the IRA's bombing campaigns of the 1980s. British media were banned for years from broadcasting his voice.

An Essex accountant, who claimed £340,000 in fraudulent VAT repayments, has been jailed for four years and three months. HMRC launched the investigation in 2012 discovering that 47-year-old Shahzad Rubani of Henley Road, Ilford, had recruited friends and associates to help set up a chain of VATregistered companies purely to commit fraud. Rubani, a qualified accountant and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants was the principal organiser of the fraud. He amended the company accounts and submitted false VAT returns for his “clients”, claiming repayments that weren’t due. While committing the fraud he also claimed Jobseekers Allowance that he wasn’t entitled to. Rubani was sentenced to four years and three months in prison and disqualified

from being a director for seven years. Peter Millroy, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC, said: “Rubani devised a scam he thought was foolproof to deceive HMRC and steal money from the taxpayer. “He used his professional status as a smokescreen and thought his criminal actions would go undetected. He was wrong and is now paying the price with a prison sentence and his reputation and professional career in tatters.” Four other men were also convicted for their part in the conspiracy with false VAT returns: Kasser Hussain (47) from Middlesex, Islam Akram (43) from London and Imran Khan (34) and Jonathan Leslie William Burns (41), both from Essex. His Honour Judge Mettyear commented: “It was the skill and determination of HMRC that brought these defendants to justice”.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals is the first site in the UK to trial a powder called the ‘Hemospray’, which aims to stop ulcers from bleeding and help patients avoid open surgery and long hospital stays. Dr Sulleman Moreea, who is the UK’s chief investigator for the HALT trial (as it is known) said: “Gastrointestinal bleeding remains one of the most important emergencies in gastroenterology. Traditionally, the way doctors treat bleeding ulcers in the stomach and duodenum is to use an endscope – to inject adrenaline and to cauterise or stem the blood-flow through the use of medical clips. “This technique can be technically demanding and difficult. If the bleeding can’t be controlled, the patient will have to be transferred to the operating theatre for major surgery which is usually always followed by a long stay in hospital to recuperate. “Hemospray is a new powder that appears to act quickly when sprayed on to the ulcer to control the bleeding and can be easily inserted via endoscope.

www.asianexpress.co.uk Although there is a learning curve for the use of the Hemospray, ultimately this is an easier technique compared to the current methods which we use.” The HALT study is a multi-national, commercial study funded by US-based pharmaceutical company, Cook Medical, involving centres in Hong Kong, Canada, Holland and the United States. It aims to recruit 80 patients worldwide, of which 40 have been recruited so far. The Bradford team, which includes specialist research nurse, Karl Ward, have screened eight people and recruited three patients since the study began in February. The hospital hopes to recruit 10 patients in total over the next five months. Initial reports of Hemospray’s usefulness in stemming bleeding peptic ulcers in the USA have proved promising but were limited by the small number of patients, so larger studies such as HALT will confirm its true worth in the management of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Dr Moreea added. “If the Hemospray proves effective in this current study then further research will be carried out to directly compare the powder against

the current techniques of adrenaline, cauterization and clips. “If the Hemospray proves less successful than we think it will be, doctors will use the current endoscopic and surgical techniques to stem the bleeding.” Currently, the Foundation Trust sees between two to three patients every month with peptic ulcers, while around three to four patients a year will end up in surgery if endoscopic options fail to stop their bleeding. “Bradford patients will benefit from

this new treatment if it proves effective as their bleeding will be easier to control and hopefully fewer patients will need to go to surgery for peptic ulcers,” added Mr Ward. Nottingham University Hospitals will be the only other UK site to take part in the trial and the team there will be led by consultant gastroenterologist, Professor Krish Ragunath.

Pakistani paramedic goes on killing spree

A man from Lahore, Pakistan confessed to killing three men after he lured them on a gay social networking site. The softly-spoken 28-year-old father of two, paramedic Muhammed Ejaz says that he wanted to ‘teach gay men a lesson’ after he tried convincing them to cease their actions. He says he wanted to send out a message about the ‘evils’ of homosexuality. The killings took place in March and April. The victims were found with their necks broken and had been sedated prior to the killings. Investigators said Ejaz had made a full confession since being arrested in a police sting operation. He told officers that he had met the victims through the online gay men website called ‘Majajan’. He met his victims, including a retired army

officer, at their homes, drugged them with sedatives hidden in food and strangled them. The killings have sent shockwaves through the underground gay community of

the eastern city of Lahore, which fears that Ejaz could be hailed a hero in a conservative Islamic society where homosexuality is stigmatised and sodomy is punishable by up

to 10 years in jail. In an interview with a press agency from his prison cell, Ejaz, who sported a neat trimmed beard and was kept shackled, expressed remorse over the killings but said he was acting to stop wrongdoing. “My way was wrong. It is tragic that the families have lost their relatives but they were spreading evil in society and I had to stop it,” said Ejaz, who is due to appear in court in the next few days. “I wanted to warn them to stay away from this evil.” The case has cast a very unwelcomed spotlight on Pakistan’s closeted gay community. With sex outside marriage both illegal and deeply frowned upon, same-sex partners are generally able to avoid the same level of scrutiny unmarried heterosexual couples come under.

17 children amongst at least 20 dead

Syria's air force killed at least 20 people, including 17 children, on Wednesday in the latest strike on battered Aleppo city, as civilians bear the brunt of the civil war. The air strikes came a day after at least 100 people, including some 80 civilians, died in a twin car bomb attack on a proregime area of Homs claimed by the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front. Despite the ongoing conflict, the regime of Bashar al-Assad is

preparing for a presidential election slammed as a farce by the opposition and by the United States as a "parody of democracy". In Aleppo, Syria's second city, twin air strikes hit a school in the rebelheld Ansari neighbourhood Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Amateur video distributed by activists showed rows of bodies of children, some of them bloodied, wrapped in grey body bags on the ground.

Iraqi’s brave violence to vote

Iraqis began voting in a key election for a new parliament as the country slides deeper into violence more than two years after US forces left. Polls across the Arab nation opened at 7am local time on Wednesday and will close at 6pm. The first national ballot after the Americans left in 2011, the election is being held amid tight security provided by hundreds of

thousands troops and police. Iraq's 22 million registered voters are electing a 328-seat parliament. A Shiite party led by Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq's prime minister of eight years, is expected to win the most seats but is unlikely to win a majority. Al-Maliki will have to cobble together a coalition if he is to retain his job for a third, four-year term.

Pay up or turn off When a country’s citizens don’t pay their power bills, their access to supplies may be cut off, yet in Pakistan it is the Prime Minister who will be feeling the pinch if the matter is not resolved. The country’s power ministry said earlier this week that it would take the action of cutting off supplies to major offices, including that of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in a crackdown on customers not paying their electricity bills. Pakistan's economy is crippled by persistent blackouts lasting up to 12 hours a day partly because influential families, politicians and bureaucrats do not pay for their use while the poor often cannot afford rising utility bills. Mr Sharif has previously promised to fix the power cuts as one of his priorities but, on Tuesday, Pakistan's minister of state for water and power, Abid Sher Ali, said the campaign to eradicate nonpayment would now target his own office. “Electricity to all state institutions and individual consumers who haven't cleared their dues will be disconnected,” he said in

Crackdown on unpaid power bills in Pakistan

COSTLY: Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, said it was a priority of his to sort out the country’s power problem yet could soon see his own power switched off by frustrated energy providers

televised remarks. “There will be no discrimination.” The minister, who is from the ruling party, said he had ordered the Islamabad Electricity Supply Company to disconnect power to the President House, Prime Minister's Secretariat, the parliament building, the official residence of the chief justice and many other offices. There was no immediate comment from those affected. It was also unclear when the power ministry would cut off supply and whether government offices would be spared if they paid up. Power cuts have worsened in Pakistan in recent years, becoming one of the main sources of discontent in the South Asian country, often leaving entire neighbourhoods without power for up to half a day in the sweltering summer months. Pakistan's state power companies are notoriously inefficient but critics have long questioned just how far Sharif will be prepared to go to overhaul an important sector dominated by decades-long alliances, industry loyalties and lobby groups.

Hydro-power plants to blame for floods Report highlights new reason behind last year’s fatal floods By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A report released earlier this week by an environment ministry panel says badly managed hydropower projects in northern India were partly to blame for last year’s deadly floods. The panel findings highlight the problem facing India, one of the world's lowest per-capita energy consumers, as it rushes to expand power generation to meet rising demand. Governments have long sought to harness the power of rivers despite the risks, in part to diversify away from polluting coal and gas plants that are increasingly costly to run. The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand was hit by its heaviest rainfall on record in June 2013, causing lakes and rivers to burst their banks, inundating towns and

villages below. In a report commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, a panel of 11 experts said that hydroelectric plants had led to the build-up of huge volumes of sediment in rivers that was not managed properly. The sediment raised river beds during the floods and was then FLOOD: Heavy rainfall caused destruction across many flushed downstream, parts of Northern India last year where thousands were killed aggravating the severity of and extensive damage was caused to property and roads the flooding. “Can it be a mere declared missing, making it the deforestation or the breaching of coincidence that the maximum deadliest ever in the mountainous dams brought on by landslides, as destruction of land and property region. Sharia Law enforced

Brunei has become the first East Asian country to adopt sharia law, despite widespread condemnation from international human rights groups. The Islamic criminal law is set to include punishments such as flogging, dismemberment and death by stoning for crimes such as rape, adultery and sodomy. The religious laws will operate alongside the existing civil penal code. During a ceremony Wednesday morning, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, announced the commencement of the first phase of the sharia-based penal code, according to the government's official website. The oil-rich kingdom,

located on the island of Borneo, has a population of just 412,000 people. The country already follows a more conservative Islamic rule than neighboring Muslimdominated countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, and has implemented strict religiously-motivated laws, such as the banning of the sale of alcohol. In response to the new set of laws, human rights group Amnesty International said that it will take the country back to the dark ages’. “It (the law) makes a mockery of the country's international human rights commitments and must be revoked immediately,” Amnesty's regional deputy director Rupert Abbott said.

‘It’s Alic Aida not Al Qaeda’ French mother refused entry to US over sound of name A woman from France has claimed that she was denied access to the US simply because her name sounded like the infamous terrorist network, Al Qaeda. 33-year-old Aida Alic was flying to New York via Switzerland with her husband and two children when she was told she would not be allowed to enter the country. It was at Geneva Airport, on Wednesday 30th April, when the young mother was preparing to board her plane to the US that she was told by Swiss Airline officials that her access to the country had been denied. For reasons which were not specified at the time, Mrs Alic was forced to return to her home near Chambery in the French Alps with her family. It was only when she decided to search the internet for answers as to why she had been refused entrance that she realised her name’s spelling may

have had an influence. On her passport, Mrs Alic’s name read surname first, ‘Alic Aida’ and she believes, due to this, the authorities would not let her board the plane to JFK Airport because her name looked like Al Qaeda. “Alic Aida, Al-Qaeda,” she told the French news website Dauphine Libere. “When friends make the play on words to wind me up, I am used to it, but not this. Especially as my name is pronounced Alitch - It is of Yugoslav origin. “And now here I am labelled as a risk.” The family lost out on more than £2,200 as their return flights to America had been purchased as nonrefundable. Paris’ US embassy said they do not comment on individual cases of citizens who are listed on the US’ no-fly list which is believed to have more than 20,000 names as of 2012 – including people accused of religious and racial profiling and discrimination.

Racially motivated British revenge DREAMY… Thriller set to release this month DREAMY… DREAMY After the success of ‘Sunn Dilruba’ – an urban romantic track, Nabz & Kami K have teamed up once again for the soulful single ‘Hum Na Milein’. Nabz, a former member of the British Asian pop band ‘NRG’, has been collaborating with the much-respected music producer Kami K who seems to have the knack of waving his magical musical wand and giving tracks an original yet versatile sound. In ‘Hum Na Milein’, Nabz’s dreamy vocals give the new song a smooth and romantic tone with an equally beautiful music video to match. A soulful ballad, with a strong RnB Bollywood theme, the song oozes class, both musically & vocally. The powerful song showcases a mature sound from the duo, with Kami K once again showing why he is still one of the most sought after Asian music

producers. ‘Hum Na Milein’ sees the growth of Nabz as a vocalist and as an all round artist, with the song delivering an impeccable vocal performance, flawlessly fusing with the contemporary classy sounds of Kami K. Nabz, who launched his solo career last year said to the Asian Express: “ I want to continue my journey of learning and am determined to deliver meaningful songs which seek to maintain a connection with the listener.”

Smooth vocals from Nabz pull at the heartstrings

When their best friend is the victim of a racist murder on a Birmingham university campus, Alison (Monique Squeri), a feisty American student, and Arjun (Shiv Jhala), an Indian who obsessively films everything, plot their revenge on Gordon, the rising star of the university’s controversial “English” Society. ‘Arjun & Alison’ is a hard hitting independent thriller directed by debutant Sidharth Sharma which poignantly tackles the underlying concerns of racism and racially motivated behaviour amongst the British youth community. Set in Birmingham, the city forms an ethnically diverse backdrop, a cultural melting pot amongst student life, where a mixed-group of friends are enjoying their days on campus when a horrifying murder takes place. Nigel (Duane Hannibal), the campus joker, ladies man and life and soul of the party is stabbed and killed after a night out. Determined to seek revenge on their best friend’s killer, Arjun and Alison embark on a journey filled with twists and turns, unraveling dark secrets along the way. Meanwhile tempers are high around campus as university activists protest against Gordon (Oliver Squires), a smarmy politician-in-the-making and controversial leader of the newly created English Society. While Gordon’s far right views and outwardly racist demeanor make him the prime suspect in the racially motivated killing, Arjun and Alison must battle their own dark problems before seeking revenge. ‘Arjun & Alison’ is a gritty British revenge thriller with a talented new cast and whilst the edgy plot

simmers with anger, lies and treachery, there is certain warmth between the two lead characters. As their friendship grows, circumstances deepen and the murder mystery starts to unravel new discoveries and past secrets. Debut Indian director Sidharth Sharma says of the film: “I was fascinated by the UK’s unique blend of cultures and the behaviour amongst the youth. During a visit to Birmingham I was particularly moved by the race riots that occurred during my trip. I was shocked by the fighting, which was happening and discussed a film idea with screenwriter Andy Conway. “As a result the script for “Arjun & Alison” had surfaced and I was compelled to make a film about the racial tensions in this part of the country as opposed to shooting in London, which is a familiar backdrop in modern Indian cinema. I feel the underlying scenarios of the lead characters are ones which the majority of young Britons can relate to.” ‘Arjun & Alison’ features an all new British cast as well as a cameo role from 'Goodness Gracious Me' star Kulvinder Ghir. The film was first premiered at the London Indian Film Festival (2012) before being officially selected for the St Tropez International Film Festival (2013) where it received critical acclaim and lead actress Monique Squeri picked up the Best Actress award. The film has since been received warmly in America, after a special screening and Q&A session with director Sidharth Sharma at the Boston University. ‘Arjun & Alison’ is being released in the UK on Friday 25th April at selected cinemas.

Timeless classic

Back in 2005, after months of underground oblivion, Tigerstyle resurfaced and introduced a fresh new talent to the UK Bhangra community in the form of Bikram Singh. Bikram, a New York Punjabi singer and songwriter, had a hit track titled ‘Kawan’, which featured vocal talents of Gunjan (she’s also famously known for her collaborations with Bally Sagoo). Bikram having penned the romantic couplets to the original song himself and laid the vocals while recording the album with Tigerstyle in Scotland. Now, Tigerstyle say that they feel that the timeless classic just had to be revamped. Pops of Tigerstyle commented:

Bikram Singh and ‘Kawan 2’ “Collectively we all felt this song never really got the justice it deserved, as budgets were limited at the time we put the album together and Bikram being a new artist. “The label didn’t have enough confidence in the project to shoot a separate video for the song, so it just appeared as part of a medley video. “For years Bikram and Gunjan

have been performing the song around the world, and the amount of love the song has received is a real inspiration for us all as artists to continue making good music. “This time with the revamped song – ‘Kawan 2’, Bikram has really put his heart and soul into making sure the song is well highlighted with a good music video.”

DJ Chan’s debut song is a real dance anthem West Midlands based Chanjit Karra AKA DJ Chan is ready to release his debut music project ‘Visa’ FT DMC and UV. Dj Chan the managing director of established DJ road show is no newbie to the game. Having been Dj’ing throughout

UK for the past decade Chan developed a passion for music and the production after playing numerous hits in clubs, parties and private functions. 30-year-old DJ Chan initially started his musical journey whilst studying at Coventry University. Starting at the very bottom by working as a ‘roadie’ for other well-known and well established DJ's he would carry equipment and help build sets. This valuable experience gave him more knowledge about

what was involved in this line of work. It was only until 2000 when he performed at Brixton academy with some of the biggest stars in the music industry, that inspired him to take his disco jockey to the next level and he achieved this by establishing his own discotheque company. This debut project is very close to Chan’s heart and will be taking his career to another level. Commenting he said: “It’s been one of my dreams to make

my own track and I am happy that all my hard work and dedication has paid off. “I am collaborating with two very successful brand new acts which are the future of our industry. I hope the fans enjoy the track across the world.” The debut song ‘Visa’ is a peppy Bhangra song sung by UV from Jallandar, India and mc’d by DMC from West Midlands. This fresh trio have composed a banger track for all the party-goers across the world.

Those who have felt slighted, though, can now take heart with the new BMW 2 Series which in effect is the name for the 1 Series Coupe. It's a rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe that's supposed to focus on the sporty side of driving more than the 1 Series hatchback it's based on. BMW is launching the 2 Series with three engines: the diesel 220d (£25,865) and a two petrol version the 220i priced at around £25,000 and the range-topping M235i which will set you back just over £34,000. Two more models, the 218d and the 225d, will join the line-up later this year; the 218d will become the new entry model in the range, starting at £24,265. The higher spec version of the 2 Series, the M235i is just the right size for a little sports car, and it feels responsive, taut and eager, the way a BMW should. The M235i is a killer powertrain consisting of a 320-hp turbocharged straight-six-cylinder engine mated to either an eight-speed automatic, or a six-speed manual. Although this is not an all-out Mcar from BMW’s in-house performance tuning stations, the M235i brings a sport-oriented suspension, brakes, and super sport tyres. Though it feels civilised at low speeds, push the motor hard and it sounds terrific, with a distinctive sixcylinder howl that just gets louder as

Zoom zoomy

It’s no secret that we’re fans of the new, zoom-zoomy 2014 Mazda3, seeing that it was awarded the Best Compact Car of the Year. This years Mazda3 hold more style appeal compared to its gaptoothed predecessor, with its long hood and flowing creases. Unlike the 2.0-litre, the 2.5-liter Grand

you rev the engine beyond 4000rpm. The M235i is seriously quick, too, with 0-62mph taking just 5.0 seconds (4.8 if you opt for the excellent automatic 'box). The beautifully finished cabin features the “M” badge here and there, while the sculpted seats provide immense support. Though the space up front is fine, the rear seats are very tight. Smaller in size than the 3 Series, the M235i brings all the latest BMW infotainment system features, and quirks, managed by the iDrive controller and viewed on a clear but small 6.5-inch colour screen. Standard equipment includes 18inch alloys, climate control, xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and a USB socket. You also get a DAB radio, although have to pay extra if you want a sat-nav.

Touring sedan feels surprisingly upscale with its leather-trimmed seats, navigation and adaptive bi-xenon lights. Compared the 2.5 to the 155-horsepower 2.0litre, there’s more grunt in the mid-range, but the throttle is a bit sluggish on tip-in, like an old Mercedes tank from the ‘80s. F Fortunately, hitting the sport button livens up the initial response, and the Mazda3 feels spritely and eager as the revs rise above 4000. Unfortunately with the 2.5-litre, there is no manual option; while the six-speed automatic

seamlessly glides through gears in everyday driving, there’s a delayed response when flicking the steeringmounted paddles. Though not as crisp on turn-in as a sports car, it still loves to be thrown around corners. Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with drivers noting its luxurious interior, button-up chassis and agile handling. “ It delivers a 33-mpg average in a split of motorway and city driving, getting as high as 38 mpg on the motorway.

BMW M235i brings back the thrills

The new Toyota Yaris Hot on the heels of its newly launched Aygo city car, Toyota has released the first details of its refreshed Yaris supermini. Scheduled to hit the showrooms this summer, the restyled car boasts an improved interior and better vehicle dynamics that its maker believes will position the car as one of the strongest contenders in the fiercely competitive supermini market. The Yaris follows the example of new Aygo, adopting a dramatic look that integrates a distinctive cross shape, centred on the front emblem, which separates the new-look upper and lower grilles. At the rear there are

restyled light clusters fitted with LEDs. According to Toyota, customer feedback has inspired improvements in three principal areas: a greater feeling of roominess and dynamic appeal; higher levels of perceived quality; and more choice in terms of colours and equipment. To back up its claims, under the skin Toyota has revised the car’s suspension to improve both comfort and handling. The engine line-up remains unchanged, with 1.0 and 1.33-litre petrol and 1.4 D-4D diesel engines alongside the car’s flagship hybrid system.

Trident, the British sports car brand, has just announced the global availability of its flagship Iceni sports car, the world’s fastest and most fuel efficient diesel sports car. With a top speed in excess of over 190mph and the ability to run for 2000 miles on a single tank of mineral or bio-diesel, the Iceni uses torque multiplication technology to

achieve this unique combination of speed, power & fuel efficiency. Two new models to the Iceni range are also unveiled today, the Iceni Magna (fastback) & Iceni Venturer (estate). All three models boast the same impressive spec, each with its own distinctive design. In addition, the cars can store a minimum of two suitcases, as well as two holdalls, making a 2000-mile road trip a reality. Phil Bevan, designer & founder of Trident said: “The Trident cars deliver incredible speed &

performance combined with outstanding fuel efficiency, achieved through our unique torque multiplication technology.” It is widely believed that horsepower delivers power, speed & fuel efficiency, but it is in fact torque that matters. Using this technology in a road car increases fuel efficiency by up to 20%. Trident has patented a unique way of utilising torque multiplication to improve performance and efficiency, which has been incorporated into all their sports

cars. The British designed Trident sports cars boast a distinctive look, with clean curves and the unusual sculpted rear. The cars also incorporate over thirty-nine bespoke, designed & manufactured components, including independent control of each car seat and oculight roof. In addition, every Iceni can be built to specific customer spec, ensuring a truly unique driving experience.

Daniel Monaghan, co-founder of Trident said, “We have worked extremely hard to reach this point & the whole Trident team is thrilled to be bringing the world’s most fuelefficient diesel sports cars to market.” The three Iceni sports cars are available to buy globally with prices starting from £96,000. With limited availability and a pre-launch waiting list, the three models are already in high demand across the globe.

New hybrid Range Rover

Land Rover unveils the new Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase in Beijing

SPACIOUS: The new Range Rover LWB offers an additional 186mm rear seat legroom in the back

Land Rover has further progressed the development of its acclaimed Range Rover with the global debut of the Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase with an additional 186mm rear seat legroom at the Beijing motor show. The derivative brings together two of the most recent innovations in the Range Rover line-up in a vehicle that offers an unprecedented combination of premium luxury, interior space, exceptional fuel and emissions performance and no compromise in Land Rover’s renowned breadth of capability. Together with the Range Rover Sport Hybrid, it will be the first diesel hybrid model from any manufacturer to be offered in China. China is recognised by Land Rover as a potentially strong market for its new premium hybrids, whilst the long wheelbase design is identified as best suiting Chinese customers’ preferences for luxury and spaciousness. Global order books will open in May and first deliveries to customers in China are expected from the end of the year.

May 2014 - 1st Edition

In 2013. A fleet of Range Rover Hybrids proved their durability and all-terrain capability on a gruelling 16,000km route from the Land Rover factory in Solihull, across central Asia to the Mumbai headquarters of Tata, Land Rover’s parent company. After the journey, the vehicles were stripped down and scrutinised by Land Rover engineers to improve understanding of how the designs and technologies can be finetuned. The Range Rover Hybrid powertrain combines Land Rover’s 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor, integrated with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. The system allows the driver to select from three different drive modes to maximise performance or efficiency, and is capable of delivering 26 per cent lower CO2 emissions (169g/km) and 6.4 l/100 km (44.1mpg). Installing the hybrid dieselelectric powertrain in the Range Rover Long Wheelbase has not compromised space, or the driving experience. The long wheelbase offers the benefits of an additional legroom for rear seat passengers and, with the option of the executive seating package, an impressive increase in the rear seat angle of recline to 17 degrees.

The hybrid system uses the same proven Terrain Response® system and all-wheel drive technology deployed in the petrol and dieselpowered models. Wading depth capability is undiminished at a class-leading 900mm. The complete system, including a lithium ion battery pack, inverter and electric motor, weighs less than 120kg. The electric motor produces 170Nm torque and operates to boost acceleration when required, and to drive the vehicle in EV (electric vehicle) Mode. The motor also acts as a generator, harvesting kinetic energy through regenerative braking, charging the battery when the vehicle is slowing. In EV mode the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 30mph (48km/h) for a range of up to one mile (1.6km) before the diesel engine seamlessly restarts. Together, output of the diesel engine and electric motor is 340PS at 4,000rpm and a class-leading 700Nm torque between 1,5003,000rpm, delivering performance on a par with the SDV8 engine. The version to be marketed in China is technically identical to that sold elsewhere, except for a change to the exhaust system to take into account the different local emissions standards. Priced at £19,250, the Ford Fiesta ST3 responds to demand for a higher series model in addition to the previous two specification line-up, with the ST-2 accounting for over 90 per cent of sales. Powered by the same highly efficient petrol engine that has proved so popular with Ford customers – the 1.6-litre EcoBoost 182PS unit with six-speed manual transmission – the Ford Fiesta ST-3 will maintain the car’s ‘hot hatch’ performance, reaching 62mph time in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 139mph. Official fuel economy on the combined cycle is 47.9mpg, with CO2 emissions of only 138g/km. Five vibrant exterior colours are available – Frozen White, Race Red, Panther Black, Spirit Blue and Molten Orange. They are matched to one of two striking interior colour themes, Molten Orange or Smoke Storm, depending on the paint finish chosen. Rear parking sensors are introduced as an optional extra on the ST-3 (and ST-2), costing £250. The Ford Fiesta ST was launched to critical acclaim and has gone on to win almost 25 award honours.

Nissan GT-R

returns home

Nissan this week announced that it is bringing back the Nissan GT-R to the Nordschleife with an assault on the 2014 Nurburgring 24 Hours. The event, held between 21st22nd June, will be one of the toughest endurance races in the world, providing the ultimate test of man and machine on the daunting Nurburgring Nordschleife. The Nordschleife is the scene of many Nissan road car time attacks over the years, the latest of which

saw the new Nissan GT-R NISMO road car complete a lap in just 7 minutes 8.679 seconds, making it record time for a volume production car. Behind the wheel for the recordbreaking lap was Michael Krumm who of course features in Nissan's line-up for the Nurburgring 24 Hours. Nissan and NISMO have assembled a varied group of top racers from its global stable for its first official assault on the event in recent years. Leading the charge will be a two-car entry from Nissan GT Academy Team RJN, which will be run in conjunction with NISMO Factory

engineers from Japan and a further GT-R entered by Schulze Motorsport. GT Academy Germany Judge, Nick Heidfeld, will race the No.80 Nissan GTR NISMO GT3, numbered to celebrate Nissan's 80th year. He will team up with the most recent GT Academy Germany winner, Florian Strauss, who was chosen by Nick to make the transition from virtual to reality just eight months ago. Nick and Florian will be joined by the two men who know the GT3 GT-R better than most: another GT Academy graduate, Lucas Ordonez, and Alex Buncombe.

Florian will be glad to be racing with his mentor at the Nurburgring

#WEAREALLMONKEYS When Barcelona’s fullback, Dani Alves, had a banana hurled at him during a La Liga match at Villarreal, he did what very few others would ever contemplate doing…he ate it. From that one action, a whole new anti-racism campaign was launched, unbeknownst to the Brazilian international, as social media showed its growing power once again in helping to tackle society’s unwanted problems. Just moments after the final whistle was blown, Alves’ teammate and fellow countryman, Neymar, posted a picture of himself eating a banana on Twitter, asking others to join him with the hashtag #weareallmonkeys. From that moment, hundreds of celebrities, sport stars and political figures have joined in the campaign and despite its critics, #weareallmonkeys has swept across social media. The campaign was initially thought up by Barcelona’s forward, Neymar, after he was victim of racist verbal abuse at a league match with Espanyol. In an attempt to tackle one of Spanish football’s taboo subjects, the 22-year-old, along with Brazilian advertising agency, Loducca, planned for the hashtag to tackle the issue head on. “Neymar didn't want to be quiet, he wanted to use his own powerful voice to create something to talk about racism,” Guga Ketzer, partner at Brazilian agency Loducca, told the BBC. “We created this idea with the hashtag ‘we are all monkeys’ and the idea was to use it and take a picture of him eating a banana. “It was the best way to empower and start this conversation in Brazil. “It is to prove to the racists that we are all together whether we are black, white, yellow, it doesn't matter. We are all monkeys. Our idea was to make the racist powerless. It is one of the biggest racist conversations in years in Brazil and even in the world.” Alves, who spoke to reporters after the incident last month, said racism was a very real problem in the country. “We have suffered this in Spain for some time,” he said. “You have to take it with a dose of humour. We aren’t going to change things easily. If you don’t give it importance, they don’t achieve their objective.”

SUPPORT: Sport stars, politicians and celebrities have all backed the campaign, posting pictures of themselves eating bananas on Twitter

Ashfaq sets sights on Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Ashfaq the Conqueror Back page story continued Despite three unanimous point’s victories over his opponents on the way to picking up the national accolade, Ashfaq said he was ‘made to work for his title’. Overcoming ‘knockout-artist’ Lee Mitchell in the quarter-finals, the heavy-hitter moved on to defeat Doncaster’s Reece Mould in the semis and London’s Lucien Reid in the three-round final.

“I was going into the finals as the number one seed in my division and had to box three really good kids on my way to victory,” he explained. “There was a bit of pressure being the number one but I was always confident of my ability. “In the final I faced Lucien Reid, who was last year’s champ. He has an awkward stance and is good on his feet but with the tactics my coaches had planned I was able to defeat him and reclaim the ABA

title.” Ashfaq was competing in the bantamweight division for the first time at the ABA’s having previously won the top prize in the featherweight class. It is in the bantamweight division that he hopes to fulfil his ambition of competing in Glasgow when the Commonwealth Games arrive and he explained what it would mean to fight on the world stage. “I won Gold in the Commonwealth Youth Games before but have never competed at the senior games,” he added. “To be able to do so, in front of what will be a home crowd for GB competitors, will be an amazing experience and after winning the ABAs I am confident of winning Gold in Scotland.” The promising local boxer will find out later this month whether he is included in the England team who will travel to Glasgow for the July Games.

Leeds Carnegie clinch historic piece of silverware

BATSMAN: Virat Kohli smashed almost 100 runs more than any other cricketer at this year’s World Twenty20 championship, as India were made to settle for a runners-up finish

Despite picking up the ICC World Twenty20 championship in Bangladesh earlier this year, Sri Lanka have been forced to handover their spot at the top of the world rankings, to the side they defeated just last month. India are back in pole position after losing just one game in the past 12 months with an almost perfect record coming to an end in Mirpur. Their conquerors, Sri Lanka, have been defeated four times within the past 12 months and despite an impressive

CHAMPIONS: MVP Jack Stannard and Leeds Carnegie Basketball coach, Samit Nuruzade, celebrated winning the division one title last weekend

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Leeds Carnegie Basketball finally picked up their first ever playoff crown last weekend after a back-and-forth affair with League Champions, Reading Rockets. A 71-65 point victory sealed Leeds’ inaugural playoff title with a man-of-the-match performance from MVP Jack Stannard, who picked up 27 points at the Amaechi Basketball Centre, Manchester. The victory was all the more sweeter for the Yorkshire side as former Rockets coach, Samit Nuruzade, who left the Berkshire club in the summer, is now part of the coaching set up at Leeds. Under Nuruzade’s tenure, Reading won the league and cup

double last season and it seems success is following the coach through his prolific career. The game itself was close throughout with both sides coming into the final off strong semi-final performances. An 18-14 scoreline after the first quarter highlighted the similarities between the sides yet it was the Rockets who upped their game in the second to take the lead at the half way point. 23 points were scored by the league champions in the second quarter, answered only by 14 in return, leaving the score at 37-32. After the interval, Leeds came back strongly and managed to tie up the game and setup the perfect final quarter where anybody could clinch the title. Momentum was with the Carnegie side and it showed as some intelligent play gave the

local side a lead which they were never going to lose. The side showed determination to hold on until the final whistle and, despite a late Reading comeback, pick up the season’s most prized piece of silverware. Josh Wilcher’s 19 point haul for the Rockets was not enough to help his side comeback and the title was Leeds’. The majority of Leeds’ scoring came courtesy of MVP Stannard, who led the way with 27 points. Backing him up was Russell Permenter, who claimed 15 points of his own alongside eight blocks. Victory signals a big stepping stone for Leeds Carnegie who will now relish the chance to play in the country’s biggest league, the British Basketball League (BBL), next season in their first rookie year.

appearance at the iT20 tournament, they could not hang on to the label of ‘number one’. The 2013-2014 results are weighted at 100 per cent whereas, the results in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 are now weighted at 50 per cent. Therefore, Sri Lanka's strong performances in those two earlier years now count for less whilst India’s resurgent form comes into a league of its own. Elsewhere, England’s abysmal form in Australia, followed up by a group-stage elimination in the World Twenty20, has seen them slip down to eighth position in the rankings, just one place above nearneighbours Ireland. In another major move in the table, the West Indies have slipped two places to be at seventh position, allowing Australia and New Zealand to climb one place each to be at fifth and sixth spots. Pakistan (third) and South Africa (fourth) make up the top five respectively.

Ashfaq the Conqueror

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Two years after picking up his first ABA title, Leeds’ very own Qais Ashfaq made it a double success last weekend and now has his eyes firmly set on the Commonwealth Games. The 21-year-old Burmantofts boxer clinched a unanimous point’s decision on Sunday to reclaim his ABA crown from West Ham’s Lucien Reid in the bantamweight division. Ashfaq faced three bouts in three days as he overcame the tough schedule to reaffirm his place as the number one amateur in his weight division and a favourite

now to represent England at Glasgow 2014. Having not competed at the 2013 ABA finals, the Yorkshireman said it was his job to reclaim a title he never truly lost and explained how this victory compared to his last. “It was a great experience to win it again,” Ashfaq said. “It was perhaps more important this time to me personally because it has set me up perfectly for the Commonwealth Games this summer. “It was a tough three days but I am so pleased to have won it and now I want to go on and pick up Gold in Glasgow.”
