The family of a missing 21-year-old from Leeds, have expressed their disappointment with how the police have dealt with raising awareness of his disappearance, which was over a month ago. The University of Bradford engineering student, Aamir Qudeer, mysteriously went missing without trace on Wednesday 26th February.

Sarah Shafi brings fun and mystery to Headingley LitFest 2014 One of Leeds’ fastest rising children’s authors made sure her home city was not forgotten about last weekend as a ‘Ridiculous Witch’ was spotted in Headingley. ‘The odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ is the latest book to be released by Yorkshire author, Sarah Shafi, in her ‘Ridiculous Witches’ series, and was read for the first time at Headingley LitFest 2014. The Leeds-based story follows on from the likes of ‘The Royal trumping witch of Windsor’ and ‘The Ludicrous pie-eating witch of Wigan’, with Leeds’ nonsensical character living up to her predecessor’s reputations. This latest tale follows Headingley’s very own witch, who, much like the author, grew up on Spring Road in Leeds and has a passion for cars. But, like all the other ‘Ridiculous witches’ before her, there is a big problem she must overcome. “She is a good witch but she has had a wicked witch as a mother who has turned her into a toad so she has a problem,” Sarah explained. “She has every single car on the planet, Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches, the lot, but they’re all being smashed up across Leeds. But, there is a very special reason for this, and you will find out why it is when you read the book.” The Ridiculous Witches books have quickly become a favourite amongst youngsters aged between six and tenyears-old, with famed artist, Tony Husband (Private Eye), providing illustrations for every book. Having only begun writing children books within the last three to four years, Sarah Shafi has quickly found her forte and she says this is down to one person in particular. “My daughter, Persia, is my absolute rock of inspiration,” she said. “She is ten-years-old now and whilst she has grown up she, and her friends, have loved listening to my crazy, made-up stories. “It wasn’t until recently that I actually put pen to paper and started writing the books and they can take anything from a couple of weeks to months to complete.
“I’ve always had an overactive, weird imagination ever since I was a kid, so the Ridiculous Witches stories are something I just love doing.” Being from Leeds is something Sarah says she has always been proud of and therefore it was only a matter of time until her stories came to the city. She added: “This tale is particularly close to my heart because she shares my story of coming from Headingley. “The dialect in the book is ‘very Yorkshire’ as well so it really feels like a book that the local community could relate to.” Ridiculous Witches from cities across England, including Windsor, York, Manchester, Wigan and most recently Leeds, must sort out their problems before they can be considered ‘proper witches’. With moral twists and wacky storylines, the tales have proved to be a big hit already, whilst the ‘Odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ was warmly received by tens of children and their parents at Headingley library last weekend. In a free, open reading, Sarah read her book to the youngsters before a question and answer session took place as part of Headingley LitFest 2014. The annual festival spans across Headingley and still has a number of events taking place over the next week. Headingley LitFest volunteer and secretary, Richard Wilcocks, explained how important it was to ensure there was
something for everybody throughout the three weeks of events. He added: “We are run by a team of volunteers and it is intended to be a community literature festival which lets everybody get involved. “We have had top flight authors, performers and actors come to the festival and Headingley has always been full of talent - Tolkien lived here from 1920’s onwards, and Arthur Ransome, best known for the children’s classic Swallows and Amazons was born here. “We have reached out to every part of the community and have had fair amount of success so far with all sectors from youth, to teen and older generations.” LITFEST: Sarah was reading her book for children at Headingley Library as part of LitFest, pictured here with the festival’s secretary, Richard Wilcocks READING: The ‘Ridiculous Witches’ series of books have had a great response from children who enjoyed a special reading

Get creative with the Tour
Bradford Council is inviting applications for funding for cultural activities in support of the Tour de France. The Council is putting in place a small arts grants programme and organisations can apply for a grant from £500 to a £1,000. The funding announcement for creative projects coincides with the first ever Yorkshire Festival 2014 being launched today as the official countdown begins for the Tour de France. The Yorkshire Festival is the first ever festival to precede the Tour de France in its 111 year history. The official launch at Welcome to Yorkshire's annual conference in Harrogate marks 100 days to go until the Grand Depart, and to mark this Bradford's City Park fountains and City Hall clocktower will be turning yellow.
Car park closing
The council-owned market car park at Union Street and George Street will close on the evening of 5th April to allow construction to get underway on the £150m Victoria Gate retail development. Along with the John Lewis flagship store, 30 retail and restaurant units and casino, the development will feature a new high quality 800 space multi-storey car park on the Millgarth Police Station site, which will open in Autumn 2016. The council secured the Millgarth land from the West Yorkshire Police Authority to enable Hammerson, the developer of Victoria Gate to build and operate the new multi-storey car park. Aamir has been a Leeds and Harrogate student all his life prior to joining the University of Bradford. His aunt says that he is extremely close to his family and usually if he has gone anywhere he would notify someone in the family. Since starting university in September last year, Aamir would come home every Friday and then be dropped off back to his Halls on Sundays. The Friday before he disappeared he spent the weekend with the family as usual, and the family say that Aamir was completely normal. When he left to go back to Bradford on the Sunday, he said ‘See you on Friday.’ Still unknown why Aamir may have travelled to Liverpool, the family say that though they have relatives scattered across the country, there is no connection with the city. Detective Inspector Neil Benstead of Bradford CID, who is leading the search for the student said: “A month has now passed since Aamir went missing from Bradford. “We remain concerned for his welfare and are again appealing to him or anyone who may have seen him, in Merseyside or Yorkshire, to please make contact and reassure both us and his family that he is okay. “His disappearance is out of character and his lack of contact is causing serious concern. “Anyone with information or any possible sightings of Aamir can contact police on 101 or Missing People on 116000.”
Aamir’s family are arranging a public awareness campaign on Saturday 29th March in Leeds city centre and hope that this will encourage people who may have any information about Aamir’s disappearance to step forward. A doctor from Bradford Royal Infirmary said he was ‘incredibly humbled’ after learning of the news that he was to be honoured with his home country’s highest civilian honour. Dr Sulleman Moreea, originally from Mauritius, was awarded the Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean award earlier this month from the President of the African nation. Since 2008 he has worked closely with Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, and the country’s Ministry of Health, to introduce, train and improve endoscopies across the five hospitals. Having done much of the work at his own expense, including travel, equipment, and training, and all in his own time, Dr Moreea was told he was to receive a medal for his efforts yet never expected to receive such a prestigious accolade. “It was on Sunday 9th March that I got a phone call from the Mauritius Prime Minister telling me the country was going to give me a medal for the work I had done and it would be announced on Wednesday 12th,” he said. “I was obviously full of pride but I told him that I may not be able to make it at such short notice as I hadn’t booked any time off. “It was actually my family and co-workers who insisted I went. My colleagues were amazing, they took care of all my work that week because they said it was a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity I couldn’t miss’.”

country’s Prime Minister, who is also a former doctor at the Yorkshire Clinic. His work across the five hospitals has helped improve the operating standards significantly whilst endoscopies can now be performed in units which previously didn’t even exist. In one hospital, in the south of the country, Dr Moreea not only paid for an architect to design a room which could cater for endoscopy facilities but also paid for the equipment. Running since 2012, and officially opened in 2013, it has so far performed more than 600 cases. Yet, Dr Moreea insists that single achievements like this are not what he is most proud of. “Unfortunately, with Mauritius being a small country and having a lot of private health care, people previously did not like to share their knowledge and talents with others,” he explained. “If you said to me, ‘what am I most proud of, teaching people how to do endoscopy or changing the mind-set of the people’, I’d say I’m much more proud of the latter. “Hospitals work best when people help each other and I like to believe that I have helped change the culture in Mauritius which will only benefit the next generation of doctors. “At the end of the day, I do this because I enjoy it. I enjoy teaching, I enjoy seeing people making progress and I enjoy seeing the country making an effort to help its people.”

Leaking loos and lost luggage propel PIA into spotlight once again

March 2014 - 4th Edition A pilot from Swindon said he was ‘appalled’ by the number of problems he encountered on a recent visit to Pakistan, with PIA airlines once again at the centre of the controversy. Four-hour delays, lost luggage, ‘terrible customer service’, and an overflowing toilet down the aisles, are just some of the issues 52-yearold Zafar Chaudhry says he was forced to endure when dealing with the airline. After travelling to Pakistan in April last year, he decided to recently report his nightmare story to the Asian Express after seeing a rise in incidents surrounding PIA. “I just felt that the standard of the airline, from the top of the organisation to the bottom, was so poor that I had to report it,” he said. “It was only the second time I have flown with PIA and how they handled all the issues of my trip was just appalling.” Recently, the South Asian airline has come under a lot of criticism from passengers who have felt the service being offered to them is well below par. News of a pilot attempting to board the plane drunk last year, and a host of long delays, have proved detrimental to the airline’s reputation, which is often favoured by passengers flying from the UK, due to its direct flight to Pakistan. Mr Chaudhry, a pilot for 20 years, was flying out to Pakistan, as a passenger, on the 20th April last year when his first plane was delayed for four hours. After arriving in Islamabad he was then unable to locate any PIA staff to direct him to where he
could get his connecting flight from, almost making him miss the plane. “I was looking for more than 20 minutes for a member of staff from the airline as I do not know the way around Islamabad airport at all,” he explained. “I finally got directions from a member of security and thankfully caught my plane to Karachi.” Upon arriving at his destination, Mr Chaudhry was informed that his luggage had not been on the plane and would have to come back the following day to collect it. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “The plane could not carry everybody’s luggage, it was too small, so they just left it without even telling us. They offered no compensation, so I was wearing the same clothes I had been travelling in for two days.

An estimated 11per cent of Leeds’ households find it difficult to heat their homes for a reasonable cost. Having already insulated thousands of lofts and cavity walls in previous schemes, hundreds more are benefitting with the council’s Wrap Up Leeds ECO. Home owners and private tenants in receipt of an income related benefit who are pensioners, have a disability, or live with a child or young person in full time education, may be eligible for a free Wrap Up Leeds ECO heating upgrade and insulation. Across the city Wrap Up Leeds ECO has already assisted 398 households. Replacement boilers have been installed in 346 homes and 56 have been insulated. Son of honoured Lieutenant Commander joins up with the Royal British Legion
A Bradford resident has become the first Asian member in 50 years to join the city’s Royal British Legion after signing up in honour of his father. 60-year-old Raja Tariq Mehmood says he is ‘extremely proud’ to wear the 13 medals, obtained by Subh Ali Shan from both British and Pakistan governments, and hopes his new membership will only carry on his father’s legacy. “My father was as beautiful as his name was,” Mr Mehmood said. “It translated into a beautiful morning and I remember him as a fantastic person. “He was very young, about 17, when he first joined the British Indian Navy in 1941. He was with them for about six years until ‘47 when Pakistan became an independent country and so he joined the Pakistan Navy.” Subh Ali Shan was a highly decorated member of the Navy who collected 13 medals throughout his 33 years of service before finally

retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1979. Unfortunately, he sadly passed away just five months later yet Mr Mehmood says it is now up to his family to keep his father’s memory alive. He explained how he joined the Royal British Legion in hope of bringing ‘warranted attention’ to his father’s achievements. “I didn’t know how to make use of these medals but luckily read an article about somebody honouring their father’s medals so did some research,” he said. “I was put through to a number in London and ended up speaking with the MoD (Ministry of Defence) who then put me in touch with the British Royal Legion, and the next morning I got a call from them saying they wanted to see me. “I went down to the Bradford branch and they said it was a ‘privilege’ to have me and my father’s medals on board. “I attended my first meeting earlier this week and I loved it, it was very enjoyable. Everybody is so respectful and it is an honour for me to be with them.” Mr Mehmood’s father was awarded five medals from the British Navy: Atlantic Star, Pacific Star, War Star, and two Memorial Medals; as well as eight more from Pakistan including several for fighting in four wars with India, and a Ten-year, 20-year, and 30-year service medal. Mr Mehmood added that he had hoped to carry on his father’s legacy through joining the forces yet was unfortunately only able to complete one year before having to leave. “It was always a dream of mine to be in the Navy or the Air Force,” he explained. “When I finally joined up in Pakistan I was told a little while later that I had to return to England or lose my citizenship. “I was never able to go back to the services in Pakistan but am extremely proud to be able to wear my father’s medals and keep his legacy alive.”

As the financial gap between the rich and the poor gets ever wider, a new food bank in Bradford is aiming to help out families at the lower end of the economic scale. Operating out of Save the Mother’s Trust’s Great Horton site, food will be packed and handed over to distributors across the area who are then tasked with ensuring it is given to some of society’s most vulnerable. A joint initiative, launched by both Save the Mother’s Trust and the Bradford central branch of Lions Club International, food parcels will be available to be picked up between 11am and 1pm every Thursday.
“This is a great partnership and with the number of food banks across the city decreasing, I wish this project all the best and good luck for the future.” At the launch event, on Thursday 27th March, dignitaries from both organisations were present, alongside the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Khadim Hussain, to officially open the project. The result will mean larger numbers of Libyans continuing their studies at Huddersfield and a succession of Benghazi staff visiting the University for research sabbaticals. There are already some 200 Libyan students at the University of Huddersfield, mostly studying for postgraduate degrees, including PhDs, across a wide range of courses. Tragic death of daughter ‘may have triggered mum’s suicide’ Coroners have released the name of the woman who killed herself in a Shipley supermarket. Sobia Yousef stabbed herself in the neck on Tuesday 25th March morning in Asda and died in the store just after 8.30am. The 36-year-old of Beamsley Road, Frizinghall, was said to have been driven to despair after losing her nine-year-old daughter to a terminal illness five months ago. Members of the community said Sobia’s world fell apart when the daughter she was devoted to lost her battle with a terminal illness. The mother had since been suffering from mental health problems. Neighbours have spoken of how the woman was often seen in an emotional and distressed state. Questions are now being raised about the level of care and her treatment, which she had received at Lynfield Mount psychiatric hospital in Bradford, and if the authorities were at grasps with her extreme mental state.

Three men from Bradford have been jailed for a combined total of 30 years for their roles in a major drugs conspiracy involving almost £2million of Class A drugs. Sheeraz Khan, 33, from Garibaldi Street, Thornbury; and Tahir Ali, 28, from Thornton Lane, little Horton, were both handed 11 year sentences, whilst Saif Al-Meskry, 22, from Thornton Lane, Little Horton, was given a nine and a half year term. All three pleaded guilty to conspiring to supply Class A drugs. The three men planned on dealing heroin and cocaine worth in excess of £1.8million, with their haul, in an industrial unit in West Bowling, only discovered by officers during a routine burglary patrol. In November 2012, officers made the discovery at Lessarna Court, where 30kilograms of heroin was seized by the police. The base had acted as a production plant for crack cocaine whilst doubling up as a storage site for the heroin. Judge Peter Benson told the defendants: “This was an extremely sophisticated operation, operating for some time and capable of producing vast profits, as well as flooding the streets of Bradford with heroin and crack cocaine.” With a street value in the millions, evidence was also shown in court of a ‘dealer list’ which had Ali’s thumb print on, showing drugs worth more than £420,000 had been traded in one month alone. “That demonstrates the scale of this operation in which you were all involved,” Judge Benson added. Prosecutor David Dixon said the conspiracy lasted at least eight months in 2012. Mr Dixon said: “This was a commercial and carefully run drugs factory guaranteeing substantial financial rewards. It was a substantial and sustained conspiracy.” A fourth man, Abbas Khan, is also wanted in connection with the conspiracy, and fled when police raided the unit. Anybody with any information in regards to the whereabouts of Khan is asked to contact the police on 101.
Detective Inspector Jon Key, of West Yorkshire Police's Organised Crime Unit, said after the sentencing: “This was clearly a significant seizure initiated by local Neighbourhood Police officers acting on community intelligence and we would like to thank the Crown Prosecution Service for their support and our colleagues in the Republic of Moldova for their assistance in this operation. “In addition to the sentences passed down today, we will also be pursuing confiscations of the defendants' assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act to make sure that any monies and identified property in

More than 350 students from a Bradford secondary school attended an options evening last week with special guest graduates on hand to explain the importance of setting a career path. Year 8 and 9 pupils from Tong High School attended the explanatory event whereby they didn’t only have the opportunity to explore their current options but also talk to representatives from local universities, Tong Sixth Form and local and national employers. With parents and guardians also present, the evening worked as an
ideal opportunity for students and families to find out more about the different education pathways and career routes. Guest speaker, Paul Mackie, inspired students and their families about choices he had made and his story from struggling student to Chairman at Rex Procter and Partners, President of Bradford Chamber of Commerce and the Chair of E3 Bradford. Mr Mackie is also the Chair of the Tong School Trust and said he hoped to help inspire the next generation of graduates.

An innovative trial has been launched in Bradford, where excess cooking oils could soon be used to power a selection of the city’s homes. 85 residents across two streets in the Bradford Moor area have been issued with ‘Fat Vats’, plastic buckets in which households are urged to put their waste cooking oil rather than pour it down the drain. Over the last five years, 80 sewer blockages have been reported by Yorkshire Water in the Bradford Moor area, with fatty oils clogging up the water flow, the main concern. This new trial not only helps solve the long-standing drainage problem but simultaneously provides homes with renewable energy. The tubs are collected from resident’s homes and taken to a large waste collection unit, provided by renewable energy experts Living Fuels, which is filled and then taken to one of their energy centres for conversion. The two streets involved in the trial are Amberley Street and Welland Terrace. Resident of the prior for more than 20 years, Hena Begum, received her Fat Vat earlier this month and although she thought it was a good idea, she added that it may not prove a huge success straight
away. “We have used the buckets but to be honest I have not really found it that helpful,” she said. “I don’t get enough waste oil to put in the Fat Vat but I can see how it may be good if a lot of houses were all putting their oil in.

The five richest families in the UK are wealthier than the bottom 20 per cent of the entire population and the gap between the rich and the rest has grown significantly over the last two decades, according to new figures. The alarming statistics show that just five wealthy UK households have more money than the poorest 12.6 million Britons – almost the same number of people as those living in households below the UK poverty line. Oxfam, who conducted the research, also say that over the past two decades the wealthiest 0.1 percent have seen their income grow nearly four times faster than the least well off 90 percent of the population. In real terms, that means a wealthy elite have seen their income grow by £24,000 a year, enough to buy a small yacht or a sports car, whilst the bottom 90 percent of Britons’ incomes have gone up by only a few pounds a week. The average UK salary is £26,500-a-year. Ben Phillips, Oxfam’s Director of Campaigns and Policy, said: “Britain is becoming a deeply divided nation, with a wealthy elite who are seeing their incomes spiral up, whilst millions of families are struggling to make ends meet. “It’s deeply worrying that these extreme levels of wealth inequality exist in Britain today, where just a handful of people have more money than millions struggling to survive on the breadline.”
5 richest UK families have more than 12 million poorest Brits Growing numbers of Britons are turning to charity-run foodbanks, yet at the same time the highest earners in the UK have had the biggest tax cuts of any country in the world. Ahead of this week’s Budget, Oxfam is calling on the Government to re-balance the books by raising revenues from those who can most afford it, starting with the redoubling of efforts to clamp down on companies and individuals who avoid paying their fair share of tax and setting out a long-term strategy to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. With 12 billion in welfare cuts still to come and pressure mounting to offer more tax cuts for the better off at the next election, the agency is also asking all parties to audit how their emerging manifesto policies would affect economic inequality in the UK. Ben Phillips said: “Increasing inequality is a sign of economic failure rather than success. It’s far from inevitable – a result of political choices that can be reversed. It’s time for our leaders to stand up and be counted on this issue.”
Economic inequality is far from being a UK only problem - a similar picture of a rapidly increasing gap between rich and poor can be seen in most countries across the globe. An Oxfam report published ahead of this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Working For the Few, revealed that the richest 85 people on the planet own the same amount between them as half the world’s population – 3.5 billion people. The report warned that extreme inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth concentrated in the hands of a few is used to buy political influence which is used to rig the rules in favour of a small elite and perpetuate inequality. Such extreme inequality is to the detriment of social mobility and is also increasingly understood to undermine both the pace and sustainability of economic growth. Ben Phillips said: “While many rich people use a portion of their wealth to support individual good causes, this should not be used as an excuse for governments failing to tackle the problem of growing inequality.”

Rotherham community worker picks up her MBE

For more than 30 years, a Rotherham resident has worked tirelessly with the local public all in hope of creating a cohesive community and her efforts have now been royally recognised. Zanib Rasool received her MBE for services to the community earlier this week from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, at Buckingham Palace after being named on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. From breaking down ethnic and cultural barriers in football, to supporting victims of domestic violence, Miss Rasool has been involved in tens of projects during her time in South Yorkshire. Speaking to the Asian Express, she expressed her delight at receiving the award and said it did come as a surprise. “I was absolutely delighted to receive the news, not just for myself but for everyone I work with,” she said. “People in the Rotherham
community work so hard to develop the lives of people in our local area and a lot of Asian women who I have worked with in particular deserve a lot of credit. “It did come as a surprise when I received the news and it was great especially for my nieces as I can see it helping to inspire them, and others like them, to put back into the community.” In the early 1980’s, Miss Rasool was a key player in the establishment of the United MultiCultural Centre, the first community organisation in Rotherham dedicated to supporting Asian women. Working in her local area of Masbrough and Ferham, she has also helped develop and sustain a number of projects whilst acting as Chair of the Ferham Children Centre and serving as a Magistrate in Rotherham. Since 2005 she has also been Trustee of Apna Haq (BME domestic violence project) and a
trustee of Home Start Rotherham. In 2008 she became Community Project Manager of Rotherham United Community Sports Trust (RUCST) where she still works on making football more inclusive for all ethnicities and cultures, whilst also playing an influential role in securing over £1.4m of external funding. Under her leadership RUCST was the Football League 2012 Community Club of the year. A delegation of generous fundraisers from a West Yorkshire voluntary organisation travelled more than 200 miles last weekend to deliver vital funding to the flood-hit area of Somerset. The Batley-based Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), made the long trip south, as they presented a cheque of £16,000 to the Somerset Community Foundation flood appeal fund. After seeing pictures of the floods through the media, the group began fundraising in mosques throughout Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield, and within a couple of weeks, had already raised more than £10,000. Chairman of IMWS, Mohamed Mulla, explained why the group were so determined to help out and how delighted he was to see interfaith relations. “Although there may not be any connection between the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and Somerset, we have the connection of humanity and that is why we knew we had to help,” he said. “We saw pictures of homes which had been flooded and decided we must do something to help. “It was through working with the Somerset Community Foundation that we actually got involved with the fundraising efforts and the work alongside the Bishop of Taunton.” The group presented the £16,000 cheque to the foundation before being taken on a tour of the affected areas, starting with the church in Muchelney, which acted as the central hub for the flood relief effort, before moving on to Burrowbridge. The Bishop of Taunton, the Rt Rev
Peter Maurice, welcomed the IMWS to the long-marooned Somerset village after meeting them in Thorney. “This is such a wonderful gesture of solidarity from one community to another,” he said. “It's heartening to find that rural communities in distress in Somerset are getting support from Muslim communities in Yorkshire. “We're very grateful to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and to all the individuals who have generously contributed to the collection. We are deeply grateful for their expression of kindness, compassion and care for those affected by the flooding.” The group also met Rita Dobson, a resident in Taunton whose home has been flooded twice already this year, in January and February.
Ms Dobson said it was lovely to meet a group who were simply raising funds due to the goodness of their hearts. “It is really nice to meet some people who genuinely care,” she said. “It’s not politically motivated or anything like that, it’s just the generosity of the heart, it does get you quite emotional really. “When you’re living in a quite sad looking house at the moment, just little things like this can make a huge difference. My spirit has been lifted today.” The IMWS have prided themselves on helping disasters both close to home and elsewhere in the world. In 2009, they raised thousands for the Cumbrian flood victims and have also raised much more for the tsunami relief work in 2004.

A leading arts charity will be launching two innovative projects later this month to celebrate the importance of women in arts. The South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk) will be launching the Women in Arts programme in Leeds on the 29th and 30th March with a pair of unique performances. In the classical world of Indian music, dance and arts it is typically men who are celebrated and rewarded for their musical talents. For the first time ever, SAA-uk is providing women musicians with a series of concerts throughout the year, in recognition and celebration of their musical achievements. Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, (Keran) Chief Executive of SAA-uk explained what the project was all about. “For years women have played an integral role in the arts and we are
delighted to highlight the artistic passion and ability they have by dedicating a whole series of events and concerts to them,” she said. “The arts are an amazing vehicle, which transcends cultural boundaries and allows freedom of expression and we have some very talented female performers whose artistic excellence deserves recognition.” SAA-uk’s celebration of Women in Arts will begin at the end of March with two very different productions. Firstly, Yerma, hosted on Saturday 29th March, 7.30pm at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds, deals with the oppression Asian women experience in today’s society. This will be followed the next day by, ‘Untold Stories’, which makes its debut performance on Mother’s day at 3pm, in Trinity Leeds, and is a family event that brings stories alive through animation. Highway to health From Bradford to Leeds on two wheels
Step aside HS2, there is another new route planned which could not only give Yorkshire’s residents easier access to two major cities but also improve health and fitness at the same time. A Bradford to Leeds CityConnect ‘cycle super-highway’ could soon be arriving in West Yorkshire as a £29million scheme is proposed to link the two cities. Aimed at reducing congestion on the roads, as well as promoting the healthy lifestyle, the route would be an alternative option for motorists fed up of the rush hour traffic. Metro Chairman, and Councillor for Kippax and Methley, James Lewis, explained what he hoped the route would achieve. He said: “By combining dedicated cycle paths, an upgrade to the canal tow path and 20mph zones feeding into the main route, CityConnect will provide people with a safe environment for cycling and walking. “CityConnect will transform cycling between and within our cities and by providing people with more safe and attractive travel options, will help to reduce congestion on our roads with the subsequent economic benefit that brings.”
Consultation has now begun on the Bradford section of the cycle superhighway route which would cover the city centre and Thornbury, including Gain Lane and Dick Lane. The public’s opinion on the matter has not been overlooked by the councillors, with a number of sessions held in Bradford to discuss ideas and proposals. The bustling Trinity Leeds retail and leisure centre has opened a quiet room for use by visitors and staff. The room, located on the top floor, past the Trinity Kitchen, has a wash area and quiet room which can be used by all races and religions to fulfil physical, spiritual and religious needs. Centre director Kevin Duffy, was excited to open the latest facility, hoping that it would further extend the inclusivity of the shopping centre. He said: “We are delighted to provide this extra community facility and believe it will prove very popular among shoppers and people who work here.” Land Securities, which owns and manages Trinity Leeds and White Rose Shopping Centre, opened a quiet room at the latter in November 2012 following discussions with representatives from faith and community groups, including the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston. Hamara chief executive
Hanif Malik, said: “The quiet room at White Rose has gone down really well. It’s great to have a place in the heart of a busy centre where people of all faiths, or no faith at all, can go to say their prayers or have a few moments of peace.” He added: “I anticipate that the quiet room at Trinity Leeds will be very well used and appreciated.” Fazle Rabbi tried out the facilities earlier this week and said they were perfect for all religions. “As a Muslim, to have a space like this is fantastic as it allows me to go somewhere quiet and pray whilst out shopping,” he said. “The facilities are great and this Wuzu (ablution facility) allows Muslims to have a good wash before they pray which is very important. “In the same sense, this place is great for other religions too as it is a place away from the busy shopping centre, meaning anybody who needs this quiet space can use it.” The quiet room is close to other community facilities and can be found by using the escalators by Trinity Kitchen. It is open for quiet contemplation and prayer from 9am until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am until 5pm on Sundays.

Murder suspect finally appears in court

Over 7,000 pupils from more than 130 schools across Leeds gathered at Elland Road last weekend as the city’s young mathematicians attempted to smash a world record. Led by world-renowned television personality and maths maestro, Johnny Ball, the pupils were involved in a spectacular day of interactive learning. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing were just some of the tasks children were set on the day whilst competitions and prizes brought the competitive edge. The lesson was open to all schoolchildren in Yorkshire between the ages of nine and 13 in Key Stage Two and Three, and was held during national science week. Representatives from the Guinness Book of Records were also present on the day to tally up the attendance and find out if it was in fact a world record. United forward, Matt Smith, may be more known for using his head to score goals than for quick calculations, yet he was on stage alongside centre-back Tom Lees, to help carry out the day’s activities. Leeds United’s Managing Director, David Haigh, was also on hand to present two lucky winners with a signed shirt and a signed ball. Organisers said the maths lessons were a fantastic opportunity for all young people across Yorkshire, regardless of ability, and educational packs, which were provided to teachers, ensured all who were in attendance joined in.

Going bananas for Fairtrade City comes together to celebrate a significant milestone
Pupils from across Leeds came together last week to celebrate an important milestone for the city and its Fairtrade status. For a whole decade Leeds has officially been a Fairtrade City, and to celebrate their tenth birthday children were invited to mark the special occasion with dignitaries from the city. Hilary Benn MP, the Lord and Lady Mayor of Leeds, Greg Mulholland MP and Colombian banana farmer - Aimeth Fernandez, were just some of the guests present to mark the date. 14 schools, fair trade supporters, Foxwood steel pan band and of course a giant banana took part in an array of events. Children led activities such as Fairtrade pass the parcel, pin the Fairtrade banana on the world map and Fairtrade sensory challenge. A Fairtrade Bake off was entered by many schools and supporters with the Sinai Synagogue awarded first place, for their delicious Chocca Mocha Cake, by the Lady Mayor of Leeds. “In 2004 Leeds worked very hard to involve the Council, Businesses, Faith Groups and Schools to attain Fairtrade City Status” said Fairtrade Leeds Chair Hannah Langdana. “This party is a great opportunity to celebrate everyone’s hard work and remember how we are making a real difference to millions of people in the developing world who are getting a fair deal for their hard work.”

he recent Court of Appeal case of Lloyd v Browning serves as a cautionary reminder to both buyers and sellers of land of the effect of non-reliance clauses. In this case, the buyer entered into a contract to buy a barn believing that there was planning permission to use the barn as a dwelling and also for a proposed extension to the barn. This was due to the fact that in several meetings between the buyer and the seller prior to the exchange of contracts, the plans produced by the seller showed the extension. However, those plans related to an earlier planning application by the seller which had been refused and there was in fact no planning permission for the extension. Further it would not have been possible to obtain such permission as the proposed extension was contrary to local planning policy. The seller was aware that the buyer wanted to build an extension and that this was not covered by the planning permission that had been granted. The buyer wanted to exchange contracts quickly and told their solicitors that planning permission had been dealt with by their planning consultant and the buyer’s solicitors therefore did not include planning enquiries in their pre-contract enquiries. The Court found that although the seller had misrepresented the property

and that misrepresentation had induced the buyer into entering into the contract to buy the property, the contract for the sale of the property included a nonreliance clause limiting reliance on representations to those made in writing between the parties’ solicitors. The Court confirmed that had the buyer wished to rely on the pre-contractual statement made by the seller, they could have acquired written confirmation from the seller’s solicitors. Contract law states that non-reliance clauses are only valid if they are fair and reasonable. The Court held that the clause was reasonable because both parties had been legally advised during the transaction and they had equal bargaining power. Further the clause could have been defeated by the buyer’s solicitors dealing with the planning permission point in correspondence. Instead the buyer who was in a hurry to complete had deliberately decided to proceed knowing that they had incomplete planning information. This case highlights the need for buyers and sellers to advise their solicitors of any pre-contract negotiations to ensure that any significant issues are dealt with in correspondence between the solicitors. The case also shows the importance for buyers to undertake full and proper due diligence of properties before contracts are exchanged. Although this case concerns the sale of land, non-reliance clauses can commonly be found in contracts for the sale of goods and services. New Delhi will not face blackout India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday told energy producer ‘NTPC Ltd’ to continue supplying power to New Delhi while it waits for money it is owed by a distribution company, avoiding a possible blackout in the country's capital. In an escalating battle over who should shoulder the rising cost of power in the city, distribution companies have said they cannot pay the money they owe whilst electricity tariffs are kept low and they suffer revenue shortfalls. Shrien Dewani will be extradited to South Africa on 8th April to face trial over the honeymoon murder of his wife, the South African government said earlier this week. Dewani, who lost the latest appeal in his three-year battle against extradition in March, could appear in court on the same day he arrives in the country. The extradition date has been confirmed by South Africa's department for Justice. Dewani will now face charges over the murder of his wife Anni, who was found shot dead in an abandoned taxi in Cape Town's Gugulethu township in November 2010. He has denied prosecutors' claims that he arranged his new wife's death. His lawyers had argued that he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, and is too ill to stand trial. But in the High Court earlier this month, three judges rejected any further appeals in British courts against his extradition. The care home owner could have lodged a lastditch appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to block his exit, but lawyers had warned that the chances of success were slim. Speaking before the announcement by the South African government, Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Rodney de Kock said: "We are in contact with Mr Dewani's lawyers about his return to South Africa. "I cannot speak for his side but it appears that they are not pursuing the European option." Prosecutors believe that Dewani, 33, paid the hijackers who later shot dead Anni, 28, in the back of their taxi after Dewani had been ejected from the vehicle. Three men in South Africa have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death, including the taxi driver Zola Tongo, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Anni's uncle, Ashok Hindocha, said: "All we have ever wanted is answers to what happened and justice for Anni. "We know who killed her but we don't know why so we hope he will get better and be able to answer those questions in court. This whole process has been prolonged by his defence team which has been hard but we got there in the end. "We have had tremendous support throughout this from people from around the world and especially South Africa. "I'd like to thank them and hope we can get justice for Anni." The South African authorities have given a number of assurances to their British counterparts that Dewani will receive good hospital and psychiatric care when he arrives in Cape Town. He is likely to be sent to Valkenberg Hospital in the city where he will have his own room and access to top psychiatrists. As part of the extradition agreement, the South Africans have agreed Dewani can return to the UK within 18 months of his arrival if he is not fit enough to stand trial.

A bank worker strangled his wife and burnt her body in a garden incinerator, just months after marrying her to hide his sexuality, a court has heard. Jasvir Ram Ginday is alleged to have told a neighbour he had set fire to ‘general rubbish’ after killing Varkha Rani at their home in Walsall, West Midlands. Opening the case against Ginday, who denies murder but has admitted manslaughter, prosecutor Deborah Gould alleged that the 29year-old had tried to destroy his wife's body. Jurors, who were warned that they may find aspects of the case distressing, heard that Ginday was arrested in September last year after police discovered the unrecognisable remains of his wife at their home in Walsall. A bank worker, who married to conceal his homosexuality, strangled his wife a few months later with a metal vacuum pipe, a court heard on
Wednesday. The defendant had travelled with his mother to India to find a bride and met several women before a match-maker known to both families introduced him to Miss Rani. He went through with arranged marriage to please his parents and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in India last March. Prosecutor Debbie Gould told a jury the couple became engaged ‘at the end of a meeting which lasted several hours’, with Miss Rani’s family believing Ginday to be ‘a perfect match for their intelligent, well-educated, and attractive young daughter’. Rani, 24, married her eventual killer in India in March last year and moved to the UK to live with him in August after being granted a visa. Claiming that Ginday had told a friend he was attracted to men in his university study group as early as 2008, Gould told jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court: "Despite his sexual orientation, in October 2012 the defendant and his mother travelled to India to find him a wife.
“While he was there the defendant met and rejected several women before meeting Varkha Rani. “No doubt to Varkha's family the defendant appeared to be a perfect match for their intelligent, welleducated, and attractive young daughter.” After her arrival in the UK on 10th August, Varkha was ‘in all senses a stranger in a strange land’ and appeared to be isolated, friendless and alone. Meanwhile, Gould told the court, the defendant was ‘staring reality in the face’ and would have had to explain any attempt to divorce his new bride. Around a month before Varkha's death on 12th September last year, someone at the family home made an internet search for incinerators, the court heard. Ginday initially told police his wife had walked out on him after ‘using’ him to gain entry to the UK. But, the crown alleges, Ginday had bought a quantity of petrol and put his wife in the incinerator after strangling her with a metal pipe from a vacuum cleaner.

‘Flood Hero’ A teenager from Southfields has been labelled a ‘hero’ and given a £5,000 prize live on television after his work with the flood relief efforts in the UK. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad was presented with the ‘Flood Hero’ award, alongside four other people, on ITV’s Daybreak earlier this week before being given a cash prize, by Sir Richard Branson, to go towards his chosen charity. During the most recent half term holidays in February, Zafar made the most of his free time and volunteered with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association's (AMYA) flood relief campaign, joining hundreds of volunteers in assisting families affected by the floods around the country. The young volunteer spent almost every day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Jamal Akbar, one of the AMYA Regional coordinators
for Charity, Community and Welfare Programmes, was so moved by Zafar's selflessness that he put his name forward for this special recognition. “In my mind, everyone who helped out with the flood relief efforts is a flood hero, whether they are from our own community, the local residents, the Army or the local Sikh community who helped in Staines,” he said. “The reason I nominated Zafar was because of his selfless dedication of time and his passion to just get out there and help in whatever capacity he could. “I don’t know many 16-yearolds who would do that during their holidays. I’m very proud that he got through as there were over 120 nominations across the country.” Zafar added: “It was a humbling experience to see those who are affected, but I am glad that the communities quickly came together to help. “I don't consider what I did to be special, but simply fulfilment of my religious duty
as a British Muslim to serve my country. Class A drugs hid in ‘Baby powder’ Class A drugs with a street value up to £50,000 have been taken off the streets of Leeds following a series of early morning raids by West Yorkshire Police. Officers from Operation Viper and the Leeds District Burglary Team joined forces to target 13 addresses across the North West area of the city in raids that took place across Thursday and Friday of last week. Five people were arrested during the course of the operation on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, with more than half a kilo of suspected Class A heroin found in a flat within the Gamble Hill Croft complex in Bramley. Within the property, officers working with a specialised drugs dog, found the class A substance behind a panel in the bathroom whilst smaller amounts were also found within a tin of baby powder. A 49-year-old man was arrested from the property on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and has since been released on police bail. Two other men, aged 24 and 23, were also arrested on Thursday
£50,000 worth of drugs seized in raids morning from separate addresses in Pudsey and have been released on bail. In a raid on Friday morning, 7th March, officers seized a Bentley Continental car from outside a property on Ireland Crescent. The vehicle has been recovered for forensic examination to determine if any offences have been committed in relation to its use or possession. A 33-year-old man was arrested from the same address with a 24-yearold male arrested from a property at Holtdale Place in Holt Park. Both men have since been released on
police bail. The raids, which were carried out under the Misuse of Drugs Act, formed part of West Yorkshire Police's Operation Viper, which aims to target the county's most prolific criminals and drive down crime. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Griffin, from Leeds Community Safety and who led the operation, said: “These arrests and a seizure of this quantity will have a significant impact on the localised drug market and shows the priority and success we have in tackling drugs and organised crime across Leeds.”

A young woman in Pakistan’s Punjab province was allegedly kidnapped and forcibly married twice before being gang raped and stripped naked in revenge for her brother having eloped with a girl from a different caste. A man named Sanaullah, 22, had eloped with the daughter of a man in the Chiniot district, after the families refused to allow them to marry. The eloped girl’s family called a village council meeting which decreed that Sanaullah’s sister would have
to marry Zahid Ali, brother of the girl who had run away with Sanaullah. Following the decision of the village council, a person said to be Zahid’s accomplice kidnapped Sanaullah’s sister from her house and married her — only to divorce her after five days. Later, Zahid and his family married her to Zahid’s cousin Noor Ahmad. After some days, four members of Zahid’s family gang raped her and subjected her to torture. They stripped her naked, tied her to a tree in the village and called her parents to get their daughter back in return for their girl. The family brought the girl
back, a month after her alleged abduction. The girl approached the Lalian Tehsil magistrate, who ordered her medical examination and registration of a case. Chiniot Deputy Police Officer Munir Zia confirmed a Panchayat (village council) had forced the victim to marry Zahid to avenge the act of her brother in February but neither she nor did her family approach the police for registering a case. The girl submitted an application to the police on Monday and an FIR of kidnap and rape had been registered with Mohammadwala police station.

British would-be drug smuggler, sentenced to life in Pakistan prison with her baby
A British woman has been handed a life imprisonment by a court in Pakistan for attempting to smuggle 63kg of heroin out of the country. 26-year-old Khadija Shah, from Birmingham, was arrested in May 2012 after the drugs were found in her luggage when she was about to board a plane from Islamabad airport. Pregnant at the time, Shah, who also has two other children, aged four and five, will remain in the country’s prison with her youngest child, Malaika, who was born whilst she was in custody. Malaika, now 16-monthsold, will continue to grow up in the prison as she has done for all her life and her mother said if it wasn’t for her, she would have gone crazy. Speaking to Vice, she said: “If Malaika was not here, I would be crazy because things are very hard… she
keeps me strong.” “I am still breastfeeding…every three months Prisoners Abroad give me some money for basic food items and Pampers for the baby, who I keep clean. “She likes to play with empty wrappers of food items. I usually try to keep our surroundings clean, too.” The mother claims she had no idea what was inside the luggage and had been used by a third party with the drugs hidden in her suitcase, not to her knowledge. She claimed a man, named in court as Imran Khan, brought her, and her two children at the time, to the country and spoilt them with all expenses paid to gain her trust. On return to the UK, Khan reportedly gave Shah two suitcases, claiming they were for a friend’s daughter who was getting married.
N o t - f o r- p r o f i t organisation, Reprieve, has called on the British government to help Khadija to appeal against her sentence. Maya Foa, director of Reprieve's Death Penalty team, said: “This is a terrible outcome for Khadija and her baby Malaika. As happens in hundreds of cases, she was used as a drugs mule without her knowledge, and yet is facing life in a Pakistani prison. “The UK government must ensure that Khadija gets the urgent assistance she needs to appeal her sentence so that her baby doesn't grow up behind bars.” The mother and daughter are currently being held in Adiala jail, in Rawalpindi, where some of Pakistan’s most notorious terrorists are based.

At its peak, more than 10,000 personnel from the British Forces were involved in the area, covering 137 bases yet that number has more than halved with the closures. At Camp Price, more
than 2,000 soldiers were once based there, but that number was most recently down to approximately 200 soldiers, tasked with protecting engineers who are closing the base. Only Camp Bastion, which remains the main base for UK personnel, and Observation Post Sterga 2 are now under UK control. British troops are officially due to end their combat role at the end
of 2014, 13 years after entering the country, yet the withdrawal of personnel began more than six months ago as the process got underway. Soldiers are reportedly delighted that the day has finally arrived, with the Afghanistan saga taking the lives of 448 British soldiers since the first fatality in 2002. Around 50% of British equipment has already been removed from Afghanistan as the

force is gradually reduced ahead of the December deadline. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said on Monday: “The handover and closure of our bases across Helmand underlines the progress UK forces have made to increase security and stability across the province but also to build up the capability of the Afghan forces who will carry that work forward. “UK combat operations will
cease by the end of this year but our support for the Afghan people will continue. Meanwhile, our troops will continue the mammoth task of getting our people and equipment home by Christmas.” Almost all the British bases in Helmand have either been dismantled or handed over to Afghan forces, the Lashkar Gah, which opened in 2006 and was the former headquarters of British military forces in Afghanistan.

A woman gave birth to a 7.7 pounds baby girl with two heads in northern India last week. The conjoined twins born at JK Hindu Hospital on 13th March, share everything below their two separate heads. The mother Urmila Sharma, 28, says that they couldn’t afford an ultrasound and had no idea she was carrying conjoined twins. “We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then,” said Dr Shikha Malik, who delivered the baby. The twins have ‘two heads,
two necks and two spines,’ but just one body and their chances for survival are slim. “She is presently alive and healthy,” said Dr. Ashish Sehgal, CEO of the Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana. Sehgal also added that a “meticulous and challenging” surgery could be the key to saving the twins' life, but the procedure can't take place until they are in stable condition. The twins are currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Press has reported that the couple and their families are ‘very distressed.’ Some conjoined twins can be separated, depending on shared organs and where they’re connected, but most are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

stable well-paying job in IT to try his hand at making audiences laugh. Having toured The Netherlands, Ghana and Pakistan whilst performing alongside the likes of Shazia Mirza, Omid Djalili and several other comedy veterans, Aatif is quickly become one of the most popular British-Asian comics in the UK.

Convinced that people would relate and warm to his refreshing take on ‘desi’ life and his twist of social and cultural observations, Aatif says that Asian audiences today are different to what they used to be. “Gone are the days when comedians could get away with just wise cracks on stereotypes of Asian people and repeating stuff which is resonant of ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ days,” says Aatif speaking to the Asian Express. “Audiences are smarter now and much more wised-up on stand-up comedy, and so the material has to be new, well thoughtthrough and completely, completely original.” Encouraged by the response from an all sell out debut 60-minute show in January, Aatif, earlier this month returned to the Leicester Square Theatre for more riproaring antics. His performance titled ‘Talk Roti To Me’, written by himself, tells the hilarious tale of a British-Pakistani’s journey to the world of stand-up comedy. A trained actor, Aatif has also made appearances in several commercials and television shows. He has had small roles in
Mark Austin's ‘Real Crime’ and ‘Peep Show’. As a bilingual actor, Aatif has also appeared in the Urdu-language series ‘Lehrein’ and the Urdu-language film ‘Majboor’. He has also written, directed and starred in the Urdu series 'Bahir Waalay' which was broadcast in the UK. In 2012, Aatif won an Honourable Mention Laural at the Los Angeles Movie Awards for his documentary ‘Postcards from Lahore’. The film also holds the distinction of being the only Pakistani film to be screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Aatif currently hosts a comedy talk show entitled ‘The Aatif Nawaz Show’ for TV Apex, the programme was nominated for two MOMO (Music of Muslim Orientation) Awards for Best Television Presenter and Best TV Show. Now Aatif is currently in discussions with various theatres and venues about taking his show on the road, specifically in Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Leeds. Bradford pop sensation Zayn Malik is all set to become immortalised as a comic superhero by the creators behind X-Men, The Avengers and Spiderman. With the comic-book-style ‘ZAP’ tattoo on his right arm, it transpires that the East Bowling lad is a huge comics fan, collecting them when he can, and is constantly on the doodle wherever he goes. The One Direction superstar recently visited Marvel Studios headquarters in Los Angeles, California, to ask illustrators for advice on drawing his own characters.

Juhi talks about her brother’s death Having had condolences pouring in from the Bollywood film fraternity, it seems Shah Rukh Khan has been constantly at Juhi’s side since the death of her brother Sanjiv aka ‘Bobby’ Chawla. Sanjiv had been the former CEO of Red Chillies Entertainment and was admitted to the hospital after a
massive stroke in 2010 and has been in coma since then. The actress, who is busy organising a prayer meet for her brother, expressed her grievance on Twitter as she wrote: "Seems like I'm dreaming all this... 11 days since my brother passed away..." Juhi has posted a video, which is a collection of clips on Sanjiv.

The sudden death of Paul Walker had put a question mark on the future of ‘Fast & Furious 7’. Divulging these plans, Bollywood actor Ali Fazal says happily: "Yes, I will be joining the Fast & Furious gang soon. We have to finish the filming." Fazal, who has previously appeared in Hindi films including ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Always
Kabhi Kabhi’ and ‘Fukrey’, said that he had just a cameo role in ‘Fast & Furious 7’. It has now been announced by Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC) and Universal Pictures that the shooting of the film, which had been postponed after Walker's death in a car crash, would now be resumed with a schedule in Abu Dhabi. Though the dates have not been sent to Ali, he has been told to keep himself ready to leave for Abu Dhabi at the end of this month. Ali is also playing the romantic lead opposite Vidya Balan in upcoming ‘Bobby Jasoos’. Since he would be required in Mumbai for promoting the film, which is expected to release around June (date not yet firmed in) he is hoping that the shooting schedules of Fast & Furious 7 don't clash with his promotion of ‘Bobby Jasoos’.

A few years back, with some help from a French NGO, Sampat's fight came into the limelight leading to media coverage and a documentary filmed on her. In the trailers, like we had assumed, Dixit kicks ass. She is shown wielding a baton
with a ferocity normally associated with Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar. She is seen flinging men with one effortless slap. She is seen beating up men. Evidently, Sampat's story has been adapted to suit the requirements of a Bollywood entertainer. Likewise, Dixit is also seen dancing (we are not complaining one bit about that though!). However, what is probably the most refreshing and interesting bit in the trailer is its villain - Juhi Chawla. Yes, you heard right. Juhi is indeed who Madhuri is pitted against in the film. And oh boy, isn't she delicious as the soft spoken, nearly-adorable, baby voiced woman whose smile is pure evil gold! Juhi seems to be playing the part of a politician who takes on Rajjo
(Madhuri) and embarks on an insidious journey to destroy the latter's clout. What makes the film so much more interesting than anything else, is instead of a woman versus man stereotypical battle, Gulaab Gang promises to be a deft exploration of feminity and the woman as an ambitious, strong, sinister, vulnerable entity.
While Madhuri turns out to be a real hero with all her brave action sequences, Juhi Chawla has also amazed people with her cunning politician avtar in the movie. With all those bold dialogues and action, the movie is going to be one of the valiant choices of both the Bollywood divas, as far as their filmy career is concerned.

To celebrate hitting 270.49mph (435.31 km/h) and unofficially breaking the Guinness World record for fastest production car, the Texan carmaker is building three very special cars, each with a $1.25 million price tag. In February, a Venom GT took to the runway at the Kennedy Space Center and, with just a 3.2-mile track to play with, managed to break the 270mph barrier, beating the current world record, held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Its top speed of 269.86 mph (434.30kph) was set on a
purpose-built track that includes a 5-mile straight. To commemorate the achievement, Hennessey Performance is building three special editions of the Venom GT with a special paint finish designed to evoke the American flag. "The Venom GT is America's supercar and it broke 270 mph on the same runway where the Space Shuttle landed at the Kennedy Space Center," said company founder John Hennessey. "We wanted to offer a special paint scheme that would incorporate the colors of the American flag - the same flag we flew on the Space Shuttle runway. Thus, our special livery package includes a body in white with red and blue
stripes." However, although Guinness recognizes the Venom GT as the world's fastest accelerating road car -- it can go from 0300km/h in 13.63 seconds -- despite video evidence, its claims to being the world's fastest production car are unofficial. For a road-going car to be officially acknowledged as the world's fastest, it must make a record-breaking run twice -- so the average speed can be taken -- and it must be deemed to be a true production car. So, road legal, unmodified form a stock version and, crucially, be built in a production run of 30 examples or more. The Venom was only afforded a single run on the track, and because production is
strictly limited to 29 examples, it doesn't technically qualify as a production car. But that doesn't mean that the car isn't ferociously fast. It's super-light, thanks to an aluminum and carbon fiber body and is propelled forward by a 7-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers. The result is a car that weighs 1244kg and delivers 1244bhp, the magic ratio of 1bhp per kilogram. Currently, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport still officially holds the title of world's fastest production car. It can hit 269.86 mph (434.30km/h) but did so on Volkswagen's immense testing track which includes a 5mile straight. Whether or not the company can hold on to the record remains to be seen. Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg has just officially unveiled its latest creation, the Agera One:1. Like the Venom, it has the magic ratio of 1PS (metric horsepower) per kg (1340 of each I total) and, the company claims it is good for "at least" 273mph. All the company needs now is a long enough runway to prove it.

The world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid car, the Volkswagen XL1, will go on display in the Design Museum in London alongside other examples of design excellence and Designs of the Year award nominees from a range of disciplines from this week until 25 August. Now in its seventh year, the Designs of the Year exhibition gathers together cutting-edge innovation and original talent, showcasing the very best in global Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphic, Product and Transport design. The Volkswagen XL1 features in the Transport category, and was nominated for the exhibition by author and automotive design and technology expert, Andrew Nahum, whose publications include ‘Fifty Cars That Changed The World’. Designed by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen brand, the XL1 is a limited series production two-seater car that explores the limits of energy efficiency for a road-legal production vehicle. The design brief for the XL1 was to
produce a ‘one litre’ car – that is to say, a car that uses one litre of fuel per 100 km, equivalent to 282 miles per gallon. The resulting vehicle uses just 0.9 litres per 100 km, or 313 mpg, and this high mpg figure correlates to a very low carbon dioxide emissions value of just 21 g/km. To achieve this fuel consumption figure, the XL1 was aerodynamically optimised, adopting the classic ‘tear drop’ shape and utilising innovations such as removing traditional wing mirrors and replacing them with small cameras called e-Mirrors which transmit exterior images to interior displays. With a drag coefficient of 0.189 the XL1 can maintain 100 kmh on a level road in still air using just 8.4 PS. The super-innovative XL1 looks like a vision of the future, while its drivetrain melds a two-cylinder 48 PS 800 cc diesel engine with a 27 PS electric motor. Power is served through a seven-speed triple clutch transmission. Like any good supercar, it is also low (just 1,282 mm high) and features scissor-opening wing doors. The XL1 is ‘handcrafted’ using small series production processes at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück factory in Germany. For the required combination of lightness and strength, its body is made
largely of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer. Approximately 30 XL1 vehicles are expected to find homes in the UK. The Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum is a reflection of everything that is current and exciting in the world. Alongside the Volkswagen XL1, it features, among other items, Kate Moss’s favourite app, a floating school in a Nigerian lagoon, friendly lamp posts and a mobile phone you can build yourself. Exhibits come from a variety of sources including international design stars such as Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield and Miuccia Prada, as well as crowd-funded start-ups and student projects. Visitors to the Design Museum will be able to pick their favourite design from the exhibition. New for 2014 is the Social Vote which sees two nominations fight it out each day through the exhibition’s online platforms, and broadcast to over one million of the museum’s Twitter and Facebook followers. Calls for BCCI President to be ousted as IPL reputation is on the line
After the IPL was rocked last year by the infamous match-fixing scandal, calls are now being made by former players for BCCI President, N Srinivasan to quit. The Supreme Court (SC) had earlier suggested that the industrialist should step down from his post as to allow a fair probe into the incidents which have threatened to destroy the sport’s reputation in India. A bench, headed by Justice A K Patnaik, said on Tuesday that there are ‘very, very serious’ allegations made in a report handed to a courtappointed probe panel and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can

We have to accept it. Since the SC
has given an order, there is no question of going back on it or giving an opinion on that. “It has to be carried out in total and BCCI will have to follow whatever the Apex Court has given,” Yadav said. Asked if he was willing to do the duty, he said, “Absolutely, I am ready to accept any responsibility given to me.” Former cricketer Amarnath, a member of 1983 World Cup winning team, added that the ‘game was bigger than an individual’ and Srinivasan should step down in the
interest of Indian cricket. “In the interest of the game, one should step aside and let the enquiry go on,” he said. “As a lover of the game, he should step down. “He should respect the law and he should honour what Supreme Court has suggested. Let's see how it goes.” Rungta was also highly critical of Srinivasan, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of placing bets on his IPL team Chennai Super Kings.
“I am happy that Supreme Court has asked him to resign. This was absolute arrogance that he was continuing as president of the BCCI,” Rungta said. “The conduct committee (earlier) had said no Board member would indulge directly or indirectly with the game (IPL team). An Exception was made for Srinivasan, which was wrong. I wish Supreme Court had taken a view at that time.” Srinivasan had initially stepped down from his role in June 2013, yet was re-elected to the president position in September, much to the disapproval of many stakeholders.

Bradford’s kickboxing stars of the future took part in the third annual AFK tournament last weekend with more than 50 children turning up to showcase their talents. Students aged from five through to 15, from the Azhar Farooq Kickboxing classes, competed in front of friends and family at Bradford’s Lapage Primary School. Competing in five different
categories, based on height, the children worked through the knockout tournaments to determine each groups eventual winner, with every martial artist coming away with some sort of trophy. Sponsored by Auto Prestige, the tournament was the biggest to date and founder, Azhar Farooq, said he was delighted to see such talent emerging in his local city.
“I was really pleased to be able to have the opportunity to let these children demonstrate their skills in front of their parents and all of them did themselves proud,” he explained. “To step up on to what is a big stage for some of these children, and none of them froze or struggled, it was really good to see.” Seven-year-old kickboxing prodigy, Esa Hussain, picked up
second place in his height division after unfortunately losing out in the sudden death final. Despite a somewhat controversial ending, his father, Amjed, said he was always proud of seeing his son compete. “I’m always very proud of Esa and his achievements and he worked really hard before this latest event,” he said. “He was unlucky not to win the tournament and maybe deserved more but there are still many more victories for him in the near future.” Esa added: “It went really good. It was a bit nerve-wrecking in front of the crowd but I did my best and did a lot of practice before. “I’m still happy at coming second but could have been first.” Event organiser, Azhar, added that he always believes kickboxing is much more than just winning or losing, and is a way of helping children gain confidence and stay away from bad habits. “The main thing for me is the children enjoy themselves,” he said. “If this kind of activity is helping to keep kids off the street and instead helping them engage with health and fitness, it is only a good thing. “I want to thank all the parents for coming down and helping out and Mr Zaman from Lapage Primary School for allowing us to hold this tournament at his school.”

In what is becoming a somewhat unwanted common sight for the former world number one, Roger Federer was once again knocked out of a tournament at the hands of Kei Nishikori. The tireless Nishikori shocked 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer 3-6 7-5 64 on Wednesday to claim his second top five scalp in two days and reach the semifinals of the Sony Open. After knocking off fourth seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer, in a three-hour marathon on Tuesday, the 21st ranked Japanese was forced to go the distance again, surviving a two-hour centre court battle with Federer. Nishikori has been one of Federer's few bogeymen, having now gotten the better of the Swiss maestro in two of their three career meetings. “I thought I really played well, especially in the third,” Nishikori said after his exhausting victory. “I was hitting both deep and striking well. Everything was going well. “There was couple of tough moments, but

A two-time Miami champion, Federer convincingly won the opening set and looked ready for an easy night when he twice went up a break in the second. But each time, the feisty Nishikori would immediately answer back and then broke Federer again at 6-5 to level the match. With the third set heading towards a tiebreak it was Federer who blinked while serving to stay in the match at 5-4, slamming an easy forehand into the net and then sending a return long to hand Nishikori triple match point. Federer would survive the first two but could not save the third, Nishikori whipping a forehand winner off the return to seal the upset. “I just couldn't find my rhythm on the serve today,” Federer said. “It was surprising especially after how well I have served and played this week. “I had the set and a break and up a break again so it is a little frustrating. He was more consistent in the second and third so all credit to him.”

Alex Hales became the first Englishman to score a Twenty20 International century as the 2010 champions kept alive their World Cup semi-final hopes with a dramatic six-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Thursday. Step forward, WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo. The man who suffered a split decision defeat in Ricky Hatton’s Welterweight debut will take on Khan in his weight class bow, next month in Las Vegas on the undercard of the Mayweather and Maidana fight. It will have been more than a year since Khan stepped foot in the ring when he appears in Vegas on the 3rd May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, yet he says he is determined to prove himself worthy of a match-up with Mayweather. “I’m looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas once again, and my intention…is to make a statement that I belong on this big stage,” said Khan. “Luis Collazo might be coming off of a big win, but I am in incredible shape and am ready for this challenge. A win on 3rd May
is what I need to prove that I truly am one of the best welterweights in the sport.” Victory over the Brooklyn native Collazo, who has 35 victories (18KO) and five losses, would surely put Khan back in the sights of Mayweather yet he insists the potential match will only happen when he is ready. “I do regret a few things and I should have taken the [Devon] Alexander fight because I’d have been a world champion now,” said Khan. “Then the Mayweather fight fell through. I should have got one more fight in and it’s a mistake that I will never make again. “Mayweather decided not to take the fight with me, probably because he thought I would be the first to take away his unbeaten record, and is now fighting somebody I’ve already beaten. I think the fight with Mayweather will happen one day but I’m not rushing and it will happen when I’m ready. “I’ve spoken to Floyd on the phone and he’s told me it’s nothing personal and he still wants to fight me. The whole thing has improved me physically and mentally and I am ready to come back.”
Before anything can even begin to materialise for Khan’s future matches he must first overcome the tricky obstacle which is Collazo. Having taken nearly two years off from the ring, the welterweight champ made his return in 2011, and has won five of six bouts, including four straight. This past January, he made the statement of a lifetime with a blistering second-round knockout victory over favoured, former world champion Victor Ortiz, and he says he has similar plans for Khan in May. “Defeating Victor Ortiz in January was just the beginning,” said Collazo. “Facing and beating Amir Khan on the biggest stage in the sport is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “I will take full advantage of this and put myself in the best position to face the winner of the main event. I hope Khan is ready because Brooklyn is coming to take him down.” Amir Khan will take on Luis Collazo on the 3rd May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, in what is sure to be one of the most anticipated ‘undercards’ of recent memory.
