A charitable grandmother from Bradford is set to venture half way around the world later this year as she hopes to set up a sewing centre in one of Africa’s most deprived nations. 54-year-old Razia Amini, from Heaton, will head to Burkina Faso at the end of May as a representative of the Humanity First charity. Having already completed two successful trips to the Gambia in the last two years, she is once again calling on the public to help her in her quest to support some of the world’s most vulnerable families.

International Colour, culture and communities at heart of celebrations By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The University of Huddersfield’s highly anticipated International Week returned for a third year earlier this month as students came together to celebrate different cultures and showcase their heritage. This year’s event welcomed more than 3,000 international students from over 120 countries, and included a wide range of events, from sports to films and even food tastings. Organised by the University’s international student societies and

sponsored by the International Office it has become one of the cornerstones of the academic social calendar, growing in size every year. “There is always great anticipation and excitement in the run up to and throughout the International Week,” said International Marketing and Events Officer Alan Tobi. “The passion, initiative and effort our students put into the growing list of events highlights the high calibre and commitment of students at the University. “International Week provides the perfect blend of sports, food, culture, traditions, film, arts and education and supports the development and skill sets of our student body. “I would like to personally thank all students, staff and participants involved for making the week such a resounding success.” Often the most anticipated day of the festival is the mid-week International Food and Culture Festival. On this day, the international student societies prepare traditional food from their countries bringing a taste of the world to the campus. Live music and dancing keep the crowds entertained, with audience participation welcomed. This year

saw a diverse range of acts from a Syrian cover of a Pink Floyd classic to a Vietnamese bamboo hat dance and from Iranian heavy metal to bellydancing. Elsewhere, as sport often unites people with a common passion, students had the opportunity to take part in a world of sport and international football tournaments, as well as an international Zumba session and Bhangra dancing. For the first time this year, the festival introduced ‘Ding’ a three

minute speed-geeking event which enables students from different countries to meet and talk whilst raising money for the National Autistic Society. Another festival first was an ‘international market’, which offered a range of food and gifts from India, China and Africa. The ancient Hindu festival, Holi, also known as the festival of colours, brought students from all nations together in a fun waterfight using coloured water-filled

Amongst those to experience International Student’s Week for a first time was Advertising and Marketing Communication student Vivienne Lau from Hong Kong. She said: “International week was full of fun, entertainment, joy and excitement for students and attendees. “For me, it was a great opportunity to talk to people from different backgrounds and cultures.” MSc International Business Management student, Eva Šperlíková from the Czech Republic, added:

“International Week is one of the events that bring students from all over the world closer. “It is an amazing opportunity to make new friends who will stay in your contact list for the rest of your life. My favourite events during the week are the food and cultural festival and the world of sports.”

March 2015 - 4th Edition Are you heartbroken on Zayn leaving 1D? We’d love to have your comments on what you think of Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction. Email:

Former 1D star releases first single away from the group After quitting the biggest boyband on the planet to live life ‘like a normal 22-year-old’ last week, Zayn Malik took his first steps into his new life by releasing his debut single on Tuesday - perhaps not so ‘normal’ after all. The former One Direction singer, who shot to stardom alongside Louie, Niall, Harry and Liam in 2010’s X Factor series, announced his decision to leave the group over Twitter on Wednesday 25th March. His departure was mourned by fans all over the world who tweeted their surprise at the move with many supporting messages about his desire to live a life away from the spotlight. However, just days after leaving fans wondering what was next for the Bradford artist, Zayn released his first debut single alongside producer Naughty Boy, to the anger of many. One Twitter user wrote: “Never been so let down in my entire life thanks mate!” whilst another added: “Good luck finding fans to trust you after what you did to

fans who trusted you for over five years. God knows you’ll just leave them too.” A demo of Zayn and Naughty Boy’s collaboration, ‘I won’t mind’, was shared on Twitter on Tuesday and received a mixed reception from his fans. Amongst those seemingly disappointed with the way the track was released was One Direction’s own Louie Tomlinson who accused the producer of ‘trying to wind up the fans’. Naughty Boy had tweeted a link to the song on Tuesday, just hours after he became involved in the spat with Tomlinson for tweeting ‘Zaughty will rise’ in reference to his work with the former 1D member. Tomlinson wrote: ‘Wow Naughty Boy you’re so inconsiderate pal, seriously how f***ing old are you, grow up!’ before later adding ‘Always have struggled to bite my tongue’. Shahid Khan, AKA Naughty Boy, previously helped launch the career of Sam Smith with the soul singer’s vocals appearing on the 2013 number one hit, ‘La La La’.

Upon leaving One Direction last week, Zayn released the following statement: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. “But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. “I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. “I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

Park and Ride success

Opened in June 2014 in preparation for the Tour de France, the Elland Road Park and Ride scheme has exceeded expectations in less than a year of operation. Over 45,000 people have used the service so far with over 350 cars parked most weekdays. Such is the demand that Leeds City Council is drawing up plans to upgrade the overspill area to provide a further 400 spaces to the same high quality specification. Patronage is expected to grow even further with a recently introduced scheme which allows city centre businesses to purchase annual passes for their staff, providing a solution to access and parking issues they may have at their own premises.

Thousands of fans will get the chance to watch some of the world’s top sportsmen on Millennium Square later this year when Leeds hosts Rugby World Cup 2015 matches. With a capacity of 5,000, the square will be the official site of Leeds’s Fanzone for the tournament. The Fanzone will be free to access, screening a number of live games on the big screen as well as hosting food, drink and entertainment as part of a national celebration of rugby. Not just for rugby fans, the Leeds Fanzone is one of 15 similar locations across the country that will see host cities providing all residents and visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the build-up to matches and be part of the atmosphere.

Making communities safer

Over £1million is being made available to fund projects that improve community safety in West Yorkshire. A range of initiatives across the city will receive a cash injection from a £3 million fund set aside to help improve housing estates. The types of projects funded include new CCTV in multi-storey flats and on shopping parades, upgraded security doors and glazing in flats and sheltered housing complexes, fencing and lighting to improve key areas and crime reduction projects. Some projects have also been funded by the council’s Housing Advisory Panels, forums where local residents get to make decisions that affect the services and conditions in their area.

Library book groups

Bradford Council's libraries are celebrating the work of local authors by hosting their own 'book groups' and stocking new books from all over the North of England. Bradford Libraries are teaming up with Read Regional, an annual campaign by New Writing North, which gives readers chance to meet northern authors in their local libraries. If people are unable to get to these events, they can get hold of any of this year's ten new regional titles in their local libraries. The list is a mix of new and established writers, with genres ranging from young adult fiction to graphic novel and contemporary poetry, and runs from March to June.

Volunteers from all religions are being sought to help bring a listening ear and a kindly word into the lives of hospital patients in Bradford. The chaplaincy service at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, which caters to people of different faiths and those of no faith, wants to expand its reach and recruit even more volunteers than the 60 it currently has. Mohammed Arshad, head of chaplaincy at the hospitals, has been in his role for the past 15 years and has seen the ‘huge impact’ volunteers can have on patients’ lives. Explaining how the role of a volunteer can often be the difference between a ‘good day and a bad one’ for people on the wards, he said: “The volunteers are the backbone of our department. “It is not all about religion with our department as our main aim is to ensure the spiritual wellbeing of each patient is catered for, regardless of their beliefs. “The Trust currently employs seven chaplains who represent all major religions in the city, but we also need an enthusiastic team of volunteer visitors who can supplement our staff’s work in providing spiritual healthcare. “This support and enhancement of our compassionate care ethos helps to enhance the patient experience here at our Trust and for many patients is a vital source of comfort during their stay.” To become a volunteer you need to be aged 17-years-old and over, and be able to commit at least twoto-three hours every week to the hospitals.

Four days of training are provided to applicants before they undertake their roles on site, on their preferable wards if available, with inter Hospital chaplain, Maryam Riaz, will have been working with the Bradford hospitals for ten years in August.

Getting ‘SuperConnected’

Nearly 50 buildings in Bradford have benefited from free Wi-Fi as the city continues to lead the way in the technological revolution. Libraries, visitor information centres, community halls, museums and children's homes are all seeing Wi-Fi installed thanks to the SuperConnected Cities programme. As part of the scheme, Bradford Council has received Government funding to invest in broadband and wireless capabilities in key areas. The Government scheme is to enable easy and fast online access to residents, visitors and businesses, and to advance connectivity and broadband access across the UK's major cities. Bradford and Leeds have led the way in connectivity so far, designed to meet the growing use of smartphones and tablets.

Otley landmark returns

Following the completion of installation work, a maypole is now once again standing proudly in a historic Otley square. A new information board was unveiled at the occasion to mark the official return of the maypole to Manchester Square, which formed part of a £56k project by Leeds City Council. This follows the previous pole in the square having to be taken down last year due to safety concerns after an inspection found cubicle brown rot at its base. Present to welcome back the maypole to the square was Cllr Mark Dobson who was joined by members of Otley Town Council and other local representatives.

Generous Gran heads Sewing to Africa machines Cover story continued

“This year I am specifically appealing for sewing machines,” she explained. “When we arrive in Burkina Faso we are hoping to set up a selfoperating ‘sewing centre’. “Our initial plan is to hire one member of staff, and train her in the field before she then teaches them same skills to the group which will enable the site to run independently and selfsufficiently. “The products they make, and services provided, will help them earn a wage in an area of major unemployment and also act as a safe place in the area.” Razia will spend two weeks in the country alongside one or two other representatives from the charity where they will focus their work on the sewing centre and a local school. A huge container full of supplies is already being prepared to be shipped prior to Razia’s departure,

which so far includes more than 40 sewing machines amongst thousands of other items. The truck-load of products will be twice the size of her previous collections, and Razia admits it will be a new experience. “It is going to be a new challenge and we are going to a very poor area but it is something I am looking forward to and prepared for.” As well as the sewing machines, Razia is also appealing for other donations. “The major appeal this year is of course the sewing machines but I am also hoping to gather bikes which can help children get access to education which they previously never had,” she said. “I’m also calling on schools, and businesses who may be refurbishing to donate desks, chairs and laptops which will be put to very good use in the country.”

Westborough are winners in national business competition

CHAMPIONS: Westborough High School students picked up top prize in the nationwide enterprising competition for their business – Ethical print

Support for communities in need

Welfare advice services, targeting the district’s poorest communities, will continue for a further three years in Bradford due to an additional £3 million from the city’s council. The investment from the Public Health department aims to target the link between poverty, debt and ill health by offering greater access to welfare rights and debt advice within local communities. The wide range of advice services aim to reach households where individuals are long term sick and disabled, carers, lone parents, unemployed or low paid. Coun Imran Hussain, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, said: “The community-based welfare advice services have been greatly appreciated and welcomed by the people who have used them.”

Win £6,000 through paying council tax

One lucky Calderdale resident could scoop £6,000 simply by changing the way they pay their Council tax. Calderdale Council has teamed-up with ‘Bacs Payment Schemes Limited’, the not-for-profit organisation behind Direct Debit in the UK, to offer a cash prize for those residents who choose to pay their Council tax by this method. Calderdale Council is one of four Yorkshire local authorities taking part in the campaign, with those living in Bradford, Doncaster and Kirklees, also eligible for entry into the draw. To be in with a chance of winning the prize, residents must register to pay their council tax bill by Direct Debit before 5pm on 31st July 2015, either by returning a completed Direct Debit Instruction form by post, signingup to Direct Debit online at www.calderdale.gov.uk/counciltax, or calling 01422 288003 to arrange over the phone.

Tycoon in Schools

CHAMPIONS By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Budding entrepreneurs from Dewsbury swapped the classroom for Buckingham Palace last week after clinching top prize in a nationwide enterprise competition. The seven Year 10 students from Westborough High School were confirmed joint winners of the Tycoon in Schools contest at a ceremony attended by nine groups of finalists and the competition founder, Peter Jones CBE. The students, who set up the company Ethical Print, impressed with a community newsletter that focuses on charity work and environmental issues. To raise profits – which were then donated to charity – they sold advertising space to local businesses. Team member Suhail Rahim, 14, said: “It was amazing attending Buckingham Palace and winning both the Key Stage 4 and overall Tycoon in Schools trophy. It was an experience of a lifetime and it made all our hard work worthwhile. “During the competition we learned how to pitch an idea, how to negotiate with clients and suppliers and how to use our time wisely. We learnt business etiquette and the approaches needed in

clinching a deal.” Since its launch in 2012, a single team has won Tycoon in Schools each year. However, in a surprise announcement by the Dragon’s Den star during the ceremony, it emerged that three companies would share the top spot – each collecting £1,000 investment. The champions had all won their respective key stage categories with Berkshire’s ‘Retrocycle’, West Yorkshire’s ‘Ethical Print’, and Tyne and Wear’s ‘Mount’, all triumphant. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr Jones said: “I was delighted to announce the winners

of Tycoon in Schools at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace this afternoon with HRH The Duke of York, KG, Patron of The Peter Jones Foundation. “The standard was so high this year that we decided to crown not one, but three winners. All of the teams have worked so hard and I have been bowled over by their enthusiasm and achievements throughout the competition. With thousands of students taking part, it has been the most successful Tycoon in Schools yet. “Retrocycle, Ethical Print and Mount were the teams that really stood out to all the judges. They all excelled in each area of the judging

criteria, came up with some incredibly innovative ideas, worked excellently as a team and generated some incredible profits.” Tycoon in Schools challenges schoolchildren from all over the UK to develop their own real-life businesses. After pitching an idea to their teachers, they receive a loan of up to £1,000 from the Peter Jones Foundation to get their companies up and running. They then raise as much profit as possible during a seven-week trading period, before submitting a final evaluation report to a panel chaired by Mr Jones himself. The judges consider profitability, teamwork, business concept, sustainability and community engagement. Lukman Patel, head of ethics at Westborough High School, said he would recommend the programme to all schools across the country. “I was so impressed with the resilience that the students showed throughout this competition. They have learnt skills that will stand them in good stead for the future,” he said. “We would encourage all schools to take part in Tycoon in Schools. It allows young people to develop fantastic enterprise and business skills.”

Hunt still on for Beeston attacker New CCTV footage is ‘clearest image yet’ of suspect

Detectives investigating the attempted murder and serious sexual assault of a woman in Leeds have released a further CCTV clip of the man involved as their investigations continue. The victim, an 18-year-old woman, was attacked by the man as she waited at a bus stop in Beeston Road, near to the junction with Tempest Road, at about 10.50pm on Friday 6th March. She was dragged from the bus stop into a nearby garden and struck over the head numerous times with a large stone before being seriously sexually assaulted. She received serious head injuries and a fractured hip. Earlier this week, investigators released footage that showed the suspect walking past the Tesco Express store in Burley Road at the junction of Westfield Terrace at about 9.45pm on the night of the attack. The additional CCTV images show the man further

up Burley Road just shortly before. Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “This latest footage gives the clearest image yet of the man’s facial features and we hope someone will recognise him from it. “We have received a number of calls in response to yesterday’s media appeal but clearly we’ve not yet had the crucial one that gives us this man’s identity. “We are convinced that someone out there will know who he is and we urgently need to hear from them. “The CCTV clips, the e-fit image, the distinctive walk or limp all paint a very distinctive picture of this man “We believe he is of Pakistani or Middle Eastern appearance, aged in his early twenties, slim with receding hair. He was wearing a green Puma hooded top with a large logo on the front, dark

APPEAL: Business owners from Oak Lane stand in front of one store which would have to remove the electrical shutters on the outside and reinstall them behind the glass

Dispute over shutters rolls on

CHANGES: More than 50 shops in the area have recieved in the past letters telling them to remove exterior shutters

Over 50 shop owners in Bradford have complained that new legislation, requiring many to redesign their shop fronts, would have major detrimental effects on their businesses. The stores in the conservation area in Manningham, on Oak Lane and the surrounding area, received letters stating it is regulation that shutters are only installed inside the buildings and not on the exterior. For many, this would mean taking down their current ‘guard’ and losing space on the inside of their premises to cater for the changes. As well as arguments in regard to costs, traders are also worried about the safety of their properties if such changes were forced to go ahead. Amongst the business owners campaigning against the regulations is Nasir Mahmood. For the past 30 years he has run his store from Oak Lane and only installed his new shop front less than two years ago. “To have to reinstall the shutters again is something which I cannot afford to do,” he said. “The front of the store was redeveloped in 2012 to keep up

with competition and that took a long time to save for. “To take the shutters down and put them inside the shop is going to have a massive effect on the business. If I do it, I fear that my shop would be broken into that same day.” Mr Mahmood repairs televisions and other electrical equipment, adding that his store could be targeted because of the often expensive goods inside. Fellow shop owner, Badar Zaman, has also been running his DIY store on the same road for 30 years. He added: “We did not put up the shutters to break the law, just to protect our stores. “We are all law abiding people but it seems at times even criminals have more rights and more say than us.” Many of the fifty-plus businesses have received letters, demanding changes be made, on a number of occasions in the past. Bradford Independent Group councillor for Manningham, Cllr Ishtiaq Ahmed, argues that ‘even the most iconic building in Bradford’ fails to comply with the ‘unreasonable’ legislation. “Located just up this Road

(Oak Lane) is Lister Mills which is arguably the most iconic building in the city and even that doesn’t comply with these rules,” he said. “How can the council therefore impose these legal obligations on independent retailers who are just trying to make a living?” A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “We have sent out 16 letters to properties that are either on or back onto Oak Lane in Manningham reminding them that they need to change their shop shutters which are not appropriate for the conservation area. “Council policy was last year endorsed by the Executive regarding shop shutters in order to improve the overall appearance of areas, particularly conservation areas, which attracts more customers in the long term. “Businesses can take a look at our policy guide which is on the Council's website. It shows a number of alternatives to external shutters and internal shutters are not necessarily more expensive. They are there to protect stock from being stolen, rather than protect the glass.”

TREE-mendous effort Community unites in tree planting mission

TREES: Thousands of trees were planted by volunteers last weekend at the Butterley Reservoir

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Green fingered volunteers from across Yorkshire headed to the stunning Butterley reservoir last weekend to help plant the first of thousands of trees in the surrounding area. Huge restoration works are currently being undertaken at the historic site by Yorkshire water with the reservoir being bled for the past two years in build up to the current operations. With the water levels at an unprecedented low for its 300year history, White Rose Forest and Woodlands Trust have been contracted to carry out environmental work. Amongst their many projects, the two organisations will be planting thousands of trees, across

the treachery cliff and hills looking down upon the reservoir. Through liaising with members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) from across the Yorkshire area, the group undertook the mammoth task of transporting 2,000 trees, guards and materials across the treacherous steep terrain, where the mountain ash and oak tree saplings were finally planted. Fields of Bradford project manager, Ian Butterfield, said: “The planting is part of a 7,000 tree project at Butterley Reservoir. “The project has been put together by Yorkshire Water, White Rose Forest and The Woodland Trust. “Forest of Bradford (a partner of White Rose Forest) is working with AMYA to plant 2,000 trees on Saturday 21st March."

VOLUNTEERS: Young and old got involved with the project which involved over 2,000 trees on Saturday

Kamal Aftab, Regional Youth Leader for AMYA Yorkshire, has been involved in many similar projects previously and was impressed with the turnout on the day. He added: “The Butterley reservoir holds a significant role in the area. “By completing this project we are bringing people from various

areas and different faiths, or those of no faith, to collaborate and celebrate what we have and contribute together to enhance the environment in which we live.” Over the past six years AMYA has planted over 125,000 trees across the country and continue to host their own planting events as that total goes ever higher.

the level of integration and harmony that we've built across the different communities in Batley and Spen,” she said, “yet there is still work to do. “I want us to have an evidence based, inclusive approach to tackling hate crime wherever it occurs, including in online forums.” Baroness Warsi then spoke of the work she had done to tackle Islamophobia during her time in government and took questions from the floor, including what Muslims could do themselves to help combat Islamophobia. “I’ll tell you what would really help - I want to see someone who is not a Muslim standing up and speaking out on Islamophobia,” she said.

Swatting the fly-tippers

Fly-tippers in Calderdale will soon face tougher penalties when the Council introduces its new powers to stop, search and seize vehicles suspected of waste crime. New legislation from 6th April 2015 will make it easier for enforcement officers across the country to crack down on fly-tipping. It means that Calderdale Council will be able to act more swiftly when investigating such cases, and take immediate action when a vehicle involved in fly-tipping is found. Enforcement officers will be able to seize and detain the vehicle pending further investigation. At the moment they are unable to stop and seize vehicles suspected of being involved in fly-tipping without having a police officer or a Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) officer present. Last year, five fly-tipping offenders were prosecuted through the courts with fines of up to £1,000.

Iraq Ambassador welcomed to Yorkshire Engineering students are top of class in consulate visit

Name a street in Dewsbury

Members of the local community are being given the opportunity to become part of Dewsbury’s rich history by naming a new street. Kirklees Council is asking for suggestions for names to be considered for allocation to a new street to serve land adjacent to 104106, Overthorpe Road, Thornhill, Dewsbury. In the past, local street names could be descriptive, or refer to prominent local towns and cities. For this competition, names should not duplicate or closely resemble existing street names in the area. Streets are generally not named after persons who are living or who have lived in the recent past. Preference is often given to names with local connotations. Suggestions must be sent by 10th April by email to street.naming@kirklees.gov.uk, by telephone to (01484) 221 560

senior officials from the Iraqi consulate after an invite from the University’s Director of International Development Andrew Mandebura. Mr Mandebura had visited the Iraqi Consulate in Manchester earlier in the year and spoke of the excellent work, students from Iraq are doing in West Yorkshire. Explaining more about the visit, he said: “The open discussion session was an excellent opportunity for current students, who are sponsored by the Iraqi government, to give feedback

about their experiences on campus and it was a huge success. “We thank Ambassador Noori for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come and visit the University’s Iraqi student population as well as seeing some of their excellent research.” After being greeted by the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Taylor, the tour progressed to the campus’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology - globally respected for its expertise in the science of measurement. Here, Ambassador Noori, whose background is in civil engineering, heard a presentation from EPSRC researcher Dr Hussam Muhamedsalih about the Centre’s award-winning research into creating the next generation of measurement technology. Dr Muhamedsalih highlighted the development of an innovative Wavelength Scanning Interferometer (WSI), which is used to measure micro and nano geometry and surface topography, even in exceptionally harsh environmental conditions. The device won the prestigious 2014 Manufacturing Technology category at the annual Innovation Awards run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Ambassador Noori then met award-winning Iraqi PhD student Mothana Hassan, who explained his doctoral research in the field of interferometry. The quality of his research led to Mothana receiving a scholarship from Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and was presented with a certificate by the Iraqi Cultural Attaché at a special ceremony in London. The tour finished with Ambassador Noori being introduced to members of the Iraqi Student Society. Thirty Iraqi students attended the meeting where there was an open discussion session over lunch.

“We thank Ambassador Noori for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come and visit the University’s Iraqi student population as well as seeing some of their excellent research.”

SUPPORT: Fourteen students were awarded a £1,000 scholarship to help them with their studies

Future’s bright in Leeds Scholarships reward university pioneers

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Fourteen local students will benefit from scholarship awards this year as they become the first members of their families to attend university. Young academics from Leeds Beckett University were each issued with £1,000 funding through the Bright Futures Scholarships to help with their studies in the city. Amongst the group is Nuha Khan, a first year Law student who, like her peers, is pioneering the way for her family. She was selected on her academic merit and is joined by aspiring sport scientists, computer animators and much more. Professor Susan Price, Vice Chancellor at the university, said all the students had shown great ‘potential’ and deserved the extra support. “We are committed to providing the highest quality student experience and opportunities for all talented individuals,” Prof Price said. A Leeds-based imam was joined by leading clergymen from across Europe in London last week as the struggle to reclaim their faith from those who wish to tarnish it, went digital. Qari Asim was one of many imams present at the launch of a new digital magazine called ‘Haqiqah’ - launched in support of a wider drive by Muslims everywhere to ‘reclaim their online space’. Haqiqah, which translates into ‘In Reality’, has been developed with contribution from Imams and scholars as a direct response to the threat of online radicalisation and extremism. The services Leeds provides for vulnerable children have been rated as ‘Good’ with outstanding leadership, management and governance, by government inspectors, Ofsted, in a report out this week. Following a rigorous and thorough inspection in to the services the council provides for children in need of help and protection, children in care and care leavers, Ofsted inspectors rated Leeds as ‘Good’ overall – making it the only ‘core city’ in the country to be rated so highly. The inspectors highlighted many aspects of the council’s children’s services as good and acknowledge the swift progress which has been made over the past five years. One of the main elements which brought praise from the inspectors was the leadership, management and governance which was rated as ‘outstanding’.

Street thieves

People in Leeds are being asked to help report the theft of desirable York stone paving from the city’s streets by crooks who then sell it on. In the past year, Leeds City Council repair crews have had to replace an estimated £50,000 worth of York stone missing from pavements across the city. This is an increase of over 50 per cent on the previous financial year. Highways maintenance teams have been out to deal with 250 cases of the stone being stolen from public pavements in Leeds in the past year, a big increase on the 141 incidents the previous financial year. Earlier this week someone stole eight flags from an Oakwood street which the council had scheduled for refurbishment.

Diary of a Lawyer

‘Bringing mystery and glamour back into law’ By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A practicing solicitor has swapped her usual court documents for a nail-biting novel, as she released her first published book earlier this month. Goldie Millan has been working in law for almost 20 years having earned her master’s degree from Cambridge University back in 1995. Despite finding many successes in the field, it was writing that always intrigued the legal professional and now she has finally had the chance to achieve a lifelong aspiration with the release of her first book. “I have always wanted to write a novel,” Goldie said, “but have never had the opportunity to do so before. “In order to write a novel, you need to have the experience of life and the subject matter about which you write. “I take on law students regularly for work placements and they all seem to have this glamorous idea of the law and Lawyers. “I try to bring them back to reality by giving them tasks such as shredding to do. ‘Diary of a Lawyer’ was my way of bringing mystery and glamour back into Law.” The ‘Diary of a Lawyer’ is set in Leeds and follows the main character, Liberty Deller, through her diary extracts. After her father’s apparent suicide, Liberty is convinced that there is more to his death than what meets the eye and takes it upon herself to uncover the truth. Training as a solicitor at her father’s former practice, she learns that all is not as it seems with a number of dark secrets lurking beneath the surface. A mysterious book, left to Liberty in her father’s will also contains its own hidden truths and becomes ever more important than the young legal trainee could have ever imagined. “My book tells the story of a young person’s struggle between right and wrong, integrity and dishonesty,” Goldie added. “Her own life will be in danger

and on many occasions she does not know what to do. She turns to her father in her Diary to help her fit together the pieces of the puzzle behind his death.” Despite working in a similar field to that of her main character, Goldie added that it had not been a straightforward task scripting the book but was now delighted to see the finished article. “Writing the novel has certainly been a learning curve because you realise that it is hard work,” she said. “It is about imagination and creativity and after spending all day reading legal textbooks and case law, it can be difficult to switch on the creativity cells. “To have the finished book now is a great feeling.” Diary of a Lawyer is available on Amazon or can be read for free on ‘Wattpad’.

DONATION: The Enterprise team presented a cheque to InTouch Foundation last week at the Seacroft head office, (l-r) Stevie Day, Ibrar Ahmed, Cameron Bentley, Osman Gondal, Brian Waligora, and Danny Stuart

Enterprise team up with InTouch

DRIVING charity forward By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The founder of a West Yorkshire charity was presented with a donation from his previous employers last week, as the InTouch Foundation continues on its ‘road’ to success. Osman Gondal worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car for four years in 2003 after graduating and joining the management training programme. Now, as the Founder and Board member of the InTouch Foundation, he spearheads the local charity which feeds the homeless across Bradford, Leeds and Keighley, whilst also operating a food bank and overseas projects. The community champion returned to the Seacroft branch of Enterprise on Thursday 19th March to accept a donation of £1,000 from the company’s philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. After meeting with previous colleagues and the cheque

presentation, Osman explained how his former employers took the proactive step of getting in touch with him in regard to supporting the charity. “The initial link with Enterprise was made when Ibrar (Ahmed), the branch manager, came down to one of our mobile soup kitchens in Keighley,” he explained. “After speaking about the work we do, he was keen to take the message back to his branch and their Holdings Foundation which helps non-profit organisations such as InTouch. “For me to go back to where my working life all began was a great experience and it was really nice to see their corporate social responsibility at the forefront of our local communities.” He added: “This donation will help a lot of people across West Yorkshire and is just the first example of our organisations working together and I look forward to welcoming the Enterprise teams on site .” Cameron Bentley, Senior Financial Controller at Enterprise

Rent-A-Car, worked with Osman during his time at the Seacroft branch. Having seen the work InTouch are doing in the local area, he said he was ‘determined’ to get involved with the projects. “It was fantastic to welcome Osman back to Enterprise and discuss the incredible work the InTouch Foundation is doing across Bradford, Keighley and Leeds,” he said. “Here at Enterprise Rent-aCar we aim to strengthen our communities one neighbourhood at a time. By teaming up with InTouch we are determined to make that goal a reality.” Brian Waligora, General Manager of Enterprise in the north of England, added: “Following the donation, we are now looking to get our staff involved with the soup kitchens and hopefully help distribute food one evening in the local areas. “Our link with InTouch will only get stronger over time and we now look forward to working together on future projects.”

Leeds gets Tropical Popular visitor attraction reopens

EXCITING: Cllr Mark Dobson inspects a new water feature set in the design of a ruined Aztec temple

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Visitors to Leeds can once again experience the magic of one Yorkshire’s most popular visitor attractions, after Tropical World reopened its doors to the public following an exciting refurbishment programme. Home to a wide range of animals from butterflies and birds to meerkats and nocturnal monkeys, Tropical World has now also welcomed a host of new arrivals to its ranks following the revamp. On offer includes an octopus, seahorses, stingray, dart frogs, Asian Tigerfish and a red bellied piranha that sit aside other improvements such as the introduction of a fantastic new

aquarium and rainforest themed mosaics. After experiencing the delightful wildlife, visitors can now relax and enjoy a snack or drink in the new conservatory extension to the café which overlooks the beautiful Canal Gardens. Last year, a children’s party and education zone was also created and the entrance to Tropical World was given a facelift as part of the overall £1.5m refurbishment programme funded by the council, a grant and a very generous donation from the Ziff family. In 2013, 390,000 people visited Tropical World, making it the Yorkshire and Humber’s third most popular paid attraction. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council’s executive

Muslim Youth Speak! Project aims to give our youth a voice

YOUTH: The Leeds Muslim Youth Forum are spearheading the campaign to produce a report which will allow key stakeholders to get a better understanding of the needs of young Muslims

The Leeds Muslim Youth Forum (LMYF), in partnership with the Hamara Healthy Living Centre, has embarked on a campaign to capture the voice of Young Muslims living in Leeds. Five consultative workshops are being held across Leeds and have been developed with the needs and experiences of the young people in mind. The project will enable young Muslims to discuss and explore issues affecting them with the aim that the tour will become a catalyst for future work with the Muslim youth. Themes were identified through discussions in the LMYF, an initiative relaunched in June 2014 after its initial

launch in 2005 after the tragic events of 7/7. The LMYF is made up of a cohort of young people aged 18-25 aiming to tackle the negative image of young Muslims by actively engaging with communities. Ten years on and the LMYF say there is an ever increasing need for young Muslims to have a voice, get involved in community life and help to change the media narrative and portrayal of Young Muslims to the wider society. The aims and purpose of the workshops is to allow young people a safe space to discuss and explore issues affecting the Muslim youth including identity, discrimination, community cohesions,

Islamic education and youth engagement. After the five workshops are complete, a report will be produced for key stakeholders, statutory agencies and youth services to better inform them of the needs of Young Muslims. 42 young people have so far participated in the consultations that have taken place at the Hamara Centre and Leeds Makkah Masjid. To get involved and have your say, young Muslims aged 16-35 are encouraged to attend the next Muslim Youth Speak workshop taking place at the Bangladesh Community Centre, Roundhay Road, Leeds on Saturday 11th April from 3pm5pm.

COURAGE: Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, known as ‘Kosta’, pictured centre, was killed by IS militants in Syria earlier this month

A hero’s welcome Ex-Royal Marine’s body flown home

The body of the first British soldier to be killed when fighting against Islamic State insurgents in Kurdistan has returned to a hero’s welcome by hundreds of mourners at Manchester Airport. Twenty-five-year-old, exRoyal Marine, Konstandinos Erik Scurfield – known as Kosta, became the first Brit to be killed in the ongoing battle when he was struck by mortar fire on Friday 6th March. Travelling to the South Asian country on his own accord, he joined Kurdish forces in their fight against the militants and sadly died when in the frontline village of Tek Khuzela, Syria. His coffin was driven from the airport by private ambulance with hundreds

of Kurds throwing red and yellow roses on the vehicle as it slowly drove through the crowds. Shouts of ‘hero’ and ‘martyr’ were made by those in attendance as an emotional crowd cheered the former soldier. Kosta’s mother, Vasilika Scurfield, from Royson, Barnsley, spoke of her son’s bravery after his passing and said the family was ‘proud’ of his courage. “Kosta was not a mercenary. He wasn’t an out-of-work soldier looking for an adventure or something to do to pass the time,” she said. “Kosta was determined to make a difference and although this is not a way that many of us would have had him choose, it was the way he considered the best

for him and I am proud of him for finding the courage to do this. “In other words he was a humanitarian who, in his own words, wanted to help.” Speaking at Parliament, she urged British voters to voice their feelings towards Islamic State and demand more action be taken by our government in the fight against the biggest threat ‘since the Nazis’. “If you are feeling politically apathetic but have strong feelings about self-titled IS, then here is a cause and a clear reason to get involved,” she added. “Let’s stop standing by and let’s instead think creatively about grinding down and putting out the biggest threat to the world since the Nazis.”

Love cycling, love Leeds New markings have been put in place at accident hot spots in Leeds in a bid to make the city a safer place to cycle. The red surfacing has been introduced to highlight side road junctions along the A660 and the A65 and in turn help reduce the number of accidents between cyclists and turning vehicles. In the past five years, 34 per cent of all incidents in which cyclists have been killed or seriously injured on Leeds’s Aroads have happened on those stretches of highway. The new markings and surfacing are designed to make drivers more aware of the possible presence of cyclists and follows on from a scheme earlier this year which saw posters put in place between Victoria Road and Glen Road, warning cyclists and drivers to stay alert. As well as the new surfacing, the latest project will include a refresh of the white line road markings and a pilot initiative, where reflective tabards, reflectors and lights will be distributed to cyclists on site in collaboration with the universities, cycling groups and Leeds Cycling Campaign.

Three aspiring architects from Leeds Beckett University have returned from their trip across the Atlantic after picking up an international design award. Asma Dauleh, Freddie Garside and Nick Husband, all first year Masters of Architecture students, fought off stiff competition from hundreds of other entries, to be named as one of five awardwinning groups in the ‘The Better Philadelphia Challenge’. Receiving their awards in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’, the competition is in memory of Philadelphia’s iconic 20th Century city planner, Ed Bacon, and challenges university-level students to address real-world urban design issues in Philadelphia. The Leeds trio, who have become firm friends since they were grouped to work together for the project as part of their coursework, said they were thrilled and proud to be prize winners in such a prestigious international competition. They won the ‘Special Jury Prize for Alternative Energy’ for their innovative design entry and travelled to Philadelphia for the awards ceremony to present their project. 23-year-old Asma, who following university hopes to work in third world countries in the development of self-sustained eco-settlement communities, explained more about the group’s designs. “Our idea was to turn Petty Island into a self-sustained research and nature preserve, which the public, families and school groups could access, utilise, learn from and enjoy,” she said.

Better Philadelphia Challenge Judge, Bob McConnell, from architecture firm EwingCole and Co-Chair of the Ed Bacon Memorial Committee, praised the group’s award-winning project. He added: “The team’s focus on the future of bio-chemical fuels was smart as they may continue to be a part of our region’s energy portfolio for the foreseeable future. We were also impressed with the thoughtful way this team developed the site to function even as sea levels rise.”

Makkah to

Madinah Author dedicates 10 years of his life to create a photographic journey of the Hijrah Route

This eminent work is the culmination of an epic journey along the Hijrah Route by esteemed academic Dr. Abdullah Alkadi, Vice President, University of Dammam. Incredibly, even after 1,400 years, the Hijrah Route has been traced accurately using sources as varied as Ottoman period maps, historic texts and oral accounts handed down through generations among locals, as well as state-of-the-art GPS technologies. Dr. Alkadi dedicated 10 years of his life to the creation of ‘Makkah to Madinah’, which is eagerly anticipated by a UK audience following its initial release in Saudi Arabia. Written in both Arabic and English, this recto-verso book illustrates the Prophet's (blessings and peace be upon him) Hijrah Route in exquisite detail, identifying landmarks and locations where verses of the Qur’an were first revealed. Using metallic inks and hand drawn maps, Londonbased agency Inspiral Design has created a premium aesthetic to complement the beautiful illustrations and photography within this must-have book. Dr. Abdullah Alkadi, a descendent of the noble Bani Hashim clan, is a scholar of religious and quantitative sciences. He has spent countless hours and untold days traversing over thirty thousand miles to trace every step that the Prophet (pbuh) took. Dr. Alkadi explains: “Makkah to Madinah is the culmination of several years of research driven by the simple desire to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Hijrah. “In the course of this study, I have conducted dozens of field expeditions, collecting data, recording GPS coordinates, identifying landmarks, calculating

distances, and covering as much of the entire route as possible by foot. “I have also examined every available resource from Hadith and Seerah literature and narrations, to historical documents, maps from the eighteenth century to the present. I have also conducted extensive interviews with local residents to glean information handed down through generations. “After analysing, synthesising, and crosschecking the information from this research, I have by the grace of God realised my original goal: to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of

the Prophet’s Hijrah.” Photographer Peter Sanders who assisted Dr. Alkadi’s book, began his career in the mid 1960s as one of London's key photographers of rock musicians. His pictures of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many others performing are classics of the genre. In 1970, he set off for India, cameras in hand. He travelled for seven months. This trip became a spiritual odyssey that led him onto Morocco and thereafter to the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, where he photographed the Hajj, at a time when few professional

photographers had access to Islam's holiest sanctuaries. Continuing to travel far and wide, Peter Sanders has built up a photographic archive of well over a quarter of a million transparencies from forty countries around the world. His first book 'In The Shade of the Tree' (now in its second reprint) gives a wonderful insight into the diversity of the Muslim cultures around the world whilst his second book 'The Art of Integration, Islam in England's green and pleasant land', shows an alternative picture of Muslims integrated within British society.

“Makkah to Madinah is the culmination of several years of research driven by the simple desire to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Hijrah.”

A football competition which united Dewsbury’s diverse communities was the flagship project that earned a local youth group a prestigious national award last week. Youngsters from Kumon Y’All received the Crimebeat Award from the High Sherriff’s Association of England and Wales as they were awarded for their local project – Let’s Unite 2014. The group arranged and hosted the day of football and fundraising events in August last year, helping to raise more than £4,600 for MacMillan Cancer Support. Teams were made up from the different communities, including local mosques, churches and even the police force as the fun-day proved a huge success. Reverend Tom Hiney, who competed in the tournament, summed up the occasion: “When the history of these towns is written, it is days like this that people will look back on. “They’re probably more important than we realise at the time.” Last week, the group behind the initiative travelled to the Royal National Hotel, in London, where each member received a certificate and a lapel badge to recognise their individual efforts. The group was also presented with a certificate and a cheque of £1,000 for their astounding achievement before the day was rounded off with a tour of London on an open top Bus and a trip on the London Eye. Farook Yunus, project leader at Kumon Y’All said the efforts of the children had been ‘amazing’ and they certainly deserved their awards. Explaining more about the project, he said: “The group entered their

Let’s Unite 2014 event into Category A of the awards, where the idea for the project comes from young people who are then also responsible for running the project. “Not only did they win that, they were also awarded for the best presentation delivered on the day, now that’s icing on the cake.” Crimebeat is the youth crime prevention charity of the High Sheriff’s Association across the whole of England and Wales.

Dr Aneesha Advice Column Every few weeks we are asking readers to pose common questions or concerns regarding cosmetic treatments to our specialist Dr Aneesha, Medical Director at Skyn doctor. Today's question is: I have constant dull tired looking skin. With a cousin's wedding coming up in the summer, is there anything you can do to help me? With the pressures of modern life, we all find ourselves working harder and with less time to relax. This can impact upon the skin and leave our skin looking dull. Coupled with external environmental factors such as sun damage, stress, smoking and alcohol, the aging process can be accelerated. As a consequence, skin rejuvenation becomes even more important, hydrating the skin to give a more smooth and radiant look. Whether it's for a simple "pick-me up" or before an important event such as a family wedding or work party, Skyn Doctor has several treatments that can restore that natural youthful appearance. Dermaroller Genuine dermaroller can be used to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, sun-damage and acne scars. It uses a microneedle system that triggers minor damage to the skin that in turn stimulates collagen production, leaving the skin looking fuller and more smooth.

Dermalux LED Phototherapy This is a non-invasive skin treatment which accelerates the body's own natural repair processes to improve poor skin complexion, signs of aging, skin damage, pigmentation and overall skin health. Microdermabrasion A concentrated medical grade skin exfoliation treatment which removes the top outer layer of skin and encourages skin regeneration. This reduces wrinkles, fine lines, scars, sun-damage and other signs of aging. Skin Peels Skin Peels exfoliate and replenish the skin, removing the dead cells from the outer layer of skin and encouraging new cells to grow. This leaves the skin looking radiant and fresher. Duetto MT Layer Our state of the art Duetto MT Laser is able to emit precisely controlled short pulses of light that will target areas of discolouration to create a more youthful complexion. The light also stimulates special skin cells called fibroblasts to increase production of collagen and elastin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

n a previous article we looked at the case of Jervis –v- Pillar Denton arising from the administration of Game Retail. The decision granted landlords the right to recover rent from administrators that operated a retail business as a going concern whilst a buyer was sought, despite the rental payment date falling before the date of the administration. The Landlords left out of pocket in the Game administration were granted leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal to challenge whether rents accruing just prior to the appointment of the administrators should to be treated as an expense of the administration (and therefore paid in priority to other creditors). Companies were strategically entering into administration on the day immediately following a quarter date, therefore avoiding rental liabilities in full even if they continued to retain possession of the leased property for the whole of the quarter. Game appointed administrators shortly after the quarter day and it is reported that they avoided paying several millions of pounds in rent before selling the business to a new owner. The principles previously established in cases of this nature were that:• Where rent is payable in advance and falls due for payment before the administration starts, it is provable but not payable as an administration expense even though the administrator retains the property for the purposes of the administration for the whole or part of the period for which the payment in

advance was payable; • Where rent payable in advance becomes due during a period when the administrator is retaining the property for the purposes of the administration, the whole sum is payable as an administration expense even though the administrator gives permission to forfeit or vacates before expiry of the period for which the payment in advance is due The Game decision marked a shift away from these principles. Landlords previously had to seek rental liabilities as an unsecured creditor but the decision meant that such liabilities returned to be viewed as an expense of the administration and will be treated as accruing from day to day. The Supreme Court has refused permission to appeal the decision. The Court confirmed that “the application does not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance which ought to be considered by the Supreme Court at this time bearing in mind that the case has already been the subject of judicial decision and reviewed on appeal”. The position therefore is that the Administrators of a limited company will be liable to pay rent to the company’s landlords for the period for which the Administrators use the property, even if that period is not the whole period covered by the rent. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of property law and insolvency, acting for both landlords and tenants in all matters arising in respect of leases as well as dealing with administrations.

Royal award Bradford’s business brains rewarded An enterprising student, who turned a small project into a fully operational business, has been awarded by Royalty this past week as she picked up a prestigious national award. Rabia Qureshi was presented with the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award, by Prince Andrew himself, after setting up her business, Sewing Bradford, in her home city. Despite studying Optometry at the University of Bradford, it was sewing that appealed to the young entrepreneur when she decided to have a go at running her own enterprise. Providing classes to aspiring seamstresses via her mother, as well as offering sewing services to the general public, the company blossomed and became a real success story.

“I think business just comes naturally to me,” Rabia said. “We had this idea to set up the company and with my mum teaching the classes it became a success really fast.” Upon hearing about the award, she added that it was an ‘honour’ to receive it from the member of the Royal Family and to speak to him in-depth on the day. “It all happened so fast really,” she said. “I was told to apply for the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award because of our success in business. “Once that happened I got accepted almost immediately and was then invited down to meet with the Duke and accept my award in Huddersfield. “He was very interested to hear about my work and spoke to me for a long time as I was the first award winner he met on the

day. “He is a very humble man with a real interest in business so it was great to speak to him about something so close to me.” The Duke of York presented each award winner on the day with their framed certificates at the University of Huddersfield before speaking to those in attendance about the importance of

enterprise. At the close of his speech he added that he wanted to see a ‘climate in which the development of digital skills was seen as a natural part of culture’ and praised the young entrepreneurs. Guests at the awards ceremony included the vice-chancellors of Yorkshire’s universities, and friends and family of the award recipients.

Hedge fund mogul William Ackman, who has spent more than two years accusing Herbalife Ltd of running a pyramid scheme, said that shutting down the company is "one of the most important things" he can do. Speaking at a meeting of the Council of Institutional Investors' in Washington, Ackman said again that Herbalife has caused "enormous harm to a very vulnerable population" by targeting undocumented Latinos in the United States and other poor people. Sparking some laughter in the audience, he urged everyone who might own stock in the company to sell it. The company has vehemently denied running a pyramid scheme ever since Ackman's $20 billion hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, first unveiled a $1 billion short bet against the company in December 2012. USA federal and

state regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission, are investigating the company. A spokeswoman for Herbalife said the company planned to respond shortly to Ackman's latest attack. Ackman said that when he first bet against Herbalife, he had not anticipated that another billionaire investor, Carl Icahn, would come in, take a long view on the company and "go on CNBC once a week saying how great the company was and how bad I was." Had Icahn not shown up, Ackman said, the whole thing would be over in a few months and Herbalife's alleged pyramid scheme would have collapsed. He said he knows the SEC has limited resources to investigate wrongdoing and that the agency should have a "quarterly sitdowns" with the market's top short sellers to help detect fraud.

Extremist individuals blacklist Home Secretary Theresa May outlines a list of measures the government would introduce, including a review of the Sharia law in Britain

Home Secretary, Theresa May has announced that a blacklist of extremist individuals and organisations with whom the government and public sector should not engage, is being drawn up. May has also outlined a list of measures the government would introduce, includes a review of the impact of the Muslim Sharia law in Britain. She said that the UK will no longer tolerate the behaviour of Islamist extremists who ‘reject our values’. The home secretary said a future Tory government would introduce measures such as ‘closure orders’ to shut premises owned or used by extremists. She also said there were plans for civil ‘extremism disruption orders’ that could be used against individuals. Mrs May also said everyone in Britain had ‘responsibilities as well as rights’, and must respect laws and institutions. A ‘partnership’ of individuals and communities could tackle the issue, she added. The home secretary outlined a list of measures a majority Conservative government would introduce, including closure orders for premises being used by extremists and banning orders. The package would include a positive campaign to promote British values. The move goes far beyond current powers to ban violent extremist and terrorist organisations and paves the way for a range of non-violent legal organisations to be put on a blacklist and boycotted by the government. David Cameron, for example, has promised for the last five years to ban the non-violent radical Islamist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir but it has failed to meet the legal criteria to be banned. The Home Office defines extremism as: “Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.”

Measures to be introduced if the Conservatives won the general election • ‘Banning orders’ for groups which do not reach the current threshold to be outlawed under terrorism laws • A ‘positive campaign to promote British values’ to the public • A review of supplementary schools, which are currently unregulated • HM Inspectorate of Constabulary reviewing how police forces have responded to ‘honour crimes’, female genital mutilation and forced marriage • New ‘extremism officer’ roles in prisons to deal with extremist inmates and gangs • A ‘full review of citizenship law’ to make sure successful applicants respect British values • A ‘sharp reduction’ in funding for translation services and a ‘significant increase’ in money for English language training

Duty to learn English In 2001-2002 and 2008-2009 the Labour government had to treble spending on English for “speakers of other languages courses” to £300m over that period. In 2005 they took the decision to start charging anyone who wasn’t on Employment and Support Allowance or Jobseeker’s Allowance benefits. Costs of classes vary, but on average an intensive one-year course of 15 hours a week could easily cost more than £1,000. According to National Association for Teaching English and Community Languages, funding cuts since 2011 have resulted in a 42% drop in the number of migrants able to access/afford an English language course in the UK, down from 82,900 in 2012-13 to 48,300. A survey in May 2014 suggested providers had waiting lists of up 1,000 potential students, meaning that many of those desperate to learn English are being turned away.

15 Years of Bollywood Katrina Kaif reveals new ‘lookalike’ at Madame Tussauds

For the past 15 years, London’s Madame Tussauds has been welcoming visitors from around the world to their unique Bollywood exhibit, bringing the waxworks of Indian film stars to the forefront of public attention. Last Friday, to celebrate reaching their latest milestone, the world famous attraction welcomed Bollywood royalty as Katrina Kaif was on hand to officially open a new glamorous setting for the wax figures, as well as revealing her own brand new ‘lookalike’. The stunning star becomes the seventh Bollywood actor to be honoured with a figure at Madame Tussauds London and her inclusion came after she was voted for by fans, just as Amitabh Bachchan was in 2000. Katrina, who collaborated closely with the Madame Tussauds artistic team to ensure total accuracy, was delighted with the figure, which is portrayed in a dancing pose wearing a beautiful sequined white, silver and gold, two-piece outfit by Manish Malhorta. “It’s an amazing honour to be asked to be featured alongside icons of the Indian film industry,” the actress commented. “I have really enjoyed working with the team and am delighted with the end result. I can’t believe how detailed and accurate it is. It is just like looking in a

mirror in 3D. Madame Tussauds London’s General Manager, Ben Sweet added: “We have a long and strong relationship with the Indian film industry and our Bollywood figures are hugely popular with guests. “We are delighted to welcome Katrina to the ever growing Bollywood A-list here, the first to be featured in a glamorous new setting where guests

can get up close with some of the biggest film stars in the world, from Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, to Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit-Nene.” Katrina’s figure was created by a team of 20 sculptors and artists over a four month period, using hundreds of precise measurements taken at a sitting in Mumbai and cost £150,000 to create.

“I have really enjoyed working with the team and am delighted with the end result. I can’t believe how detailed and accurate it is. It is just like looking in a mirror in 3D. LOOKALIKE: Katrina Kaif stands with her new waxwork, unveiled last week at London’s Madame Tussauds

The scheme enables families with an income of less than £16,190 per year from either work or benefits to apply for 15 hours of free early education and childcare a week. If eligible, families can take advantage of one of the approved child-minders, nurseries or children's centres operating in their local area. Only nurseries and child-minders with ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ Ofsted reports are able to offer places. Amongst parents already signed up to the scheme is 39-year-old mother-of-three

Aysha Haque from Southwark. After coming across information in regard to the initiative at her local library, Aysha called up her local Family Information Service to learn more about the process and was promptly sent a form to complete and return. Upon hearing she was eligible for the free childcare, she says it was an easy decision to give her youngest child the ‘best start’ in life. “My daughter had got used to me taking her to the local toddler groups but I felt like she needed something to make her more independent and help her development as she was just watching TV and playing with the same toys at home,” she explained. “[Since starting her early education] there have been

lots of positive changes. My daughter is more talkative and can form long sentences. “She has learnt manners…she even reminds us if we forget to say please or thank-you. She has also developed great social skills and in particular – learnt how to share and to take turns which has had a positive impact at home with her siblings.” Early education at the age of two has been proven to give children a good start in life, making them more likely to enjoy and do well at school. The DfE is committed to raising awareness and encouraging more Bangladeshi parents who are eligible to take up the offer and choose between a local nursery, children's centre or a registered childminder.

Conman targeted music fans to fuel drug habit A Birmingham man who conned thousands of pounds out of concert goers over 12 months in order to fund his cocaine habit was finally jailed last week. Jay Carmen was handed the sentence after admitting numerous fraud offences where he advertised fictitious tickets on social media and auction websites, netting him £9,500 in total to pay for his £200-a-day addiction. Music fans across the UK were left out of pocket after paying up to £500 for Beyoncé tickets and £600 for admissions to the Isle of Wight’s Bestival festival but the tickets did not exist and never arrived. Carmen, aged 27, also duped a number of horse lovers by selling expensive saddles for £465 on equestrian websites. The offences all took place between February 2013 and March 2014. Carmen was caught when detectives traced the bank account he was using to transfer the funds and was arrested by officers in May 2014. Carmen, of Pembroke Drive, Northfield, admitted 24 of the offences but denied six of them and the case went to trial at Birmingham Crown Court. But at

the last minute, the fraudster changed his mind pleading guilty to all 30 crimes and was sentenced to two years in jail on Friday 20th March. PC Richard Potts, from the force’s Economic Crime Unit, said: “Carmen – who was a legitimate businessman with a silver service and events management training company - used a series of false names as he did not want his perceived good name to be associated with the fraudulent sales. “He lied to his girlfriend and a friend, saying he needed access to their bank accounts to facilitate funds transfers from his company, but in fact used them to accept payments from his fraudulent sales. “The sentence handed to Carmen reflects the financial impact and stress his crimes had on his victims and he will be the subject of a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing in an attempt to recover some of the money lost. “This case is also a timely reminder that – with the many sporting and music events on offer in the UK over the summer – people need to be on their guard against fraudsters like Carmen, and we’d advise anyone wanting to buy tickets for an event should only buy them from trusted websites or a legitimate ticket seller.”

Medical academics join Islamic State

Nine British medical students have travelled to Syria, apparently to work in hospitals controlled by Islamic State, the Observer newspaper reported on Saturday. The group of four women and five men reportedly crossed into Syria from Turkey last week, having travelled from Sudan where they had been studying. The newspaper quoted Turkish opposition politician Mehmet Ali Ediboglu, who had met members of the students' families who were trying to persuade the students to return. Britain's security services estimate that some 600 Britons have gone to Syria or Iraq to join militant groups, including the man known as ‘Jihadi John’, who has appeared in several Islamic State beheading videos. Islamic State's attempt to create a theocratic Sunni Muslim ‘caliphate’ by violent means has attracted thousands of recruits from Europe and elsewhere. Three British schoolgirls are thought to have travelled through Turkey to Syria in February to join the militant group, in one of the most high-profile recent cases. Their families and British authorities have made repeated appeals for them to return home.

Yemen: Six children among dozens killed in Saudi Arabian-led airstrikes At least six children under the age of 10 were among a reported 25 people killed in Saudi Arabianled airstrikes in the Yemeni capital Sana’a. Amnesty International spoke to medical personnel at four different hospitals where the dead were taken after being pulled from the rubble of 14 houses that were hit in a residential neighbourhood near the city’s international airport. The rest of those killed were men, mostly in their 30s and 40s. It is believed that more people may still be buried beneath the rubble, and at least 20, including four women, were admitted to hospital with mainly shrapnel

injures. "This high toll of civilian deaths and injuries in these attacks raises concerns about compliance with the rules of international humanitarian law. Saudi Arabian and any other armed forces carrying out airstrikes in Yemen are required to take all feasible precautions to spare civilians," said Said Boumedouha, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme. "This includes verifying that targets are in fact military objectives and giving civilians effective advance warnings unless circumstances do not permit. "The Huthi armed groups and

the Yemeni armed forces also have obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians under their control from the effects of attacks, including by avoiding, to the extent feasible, locating their fighters and weaponry within residential neighbourhoods." Given the civilian deaths and injuries, Saudi Arabia and other states involved in these airstrikes must investigate whether violations of international humanitarian law were committed. If there is evidence that war crimes were committed they must prosecute the suspects in fair trials. Yemen’s Ministry of Health said the airstrikes killed 25 people and injured some 40 – it is not yet known if there were any fighters among the casualties. According to a paramedic who witnessed the aftermath, the airstrike near the airport occurred shortly before 3AM local time, in a residential area called Beni Hawat. Huthi armed groups had allegedly been operating a checkpoint around 100m away, as well as al-Dailami base around 500m away. Saudi Arabian officials stated they had destroyed "all Huthi air defences" at al-Dailami base next to Sana’a International Airport. Beni Hawat was among a number of sites around the city hit by airstrikes as Saudi Arabia announced it was launching a military intervention by a coalition of 10 countries, including five Gulf Cooperation Council states, against the Huthi armed groups. The US government today stated it had ‘authorised the provision of logistical and intelligence support’ to this military intervention, and other governments, including the UK and Turkey, endorsed the move.

Lioness kept as pet in Pakistan gives birth to five cubs

MAGESTIC: Owner Malik Fazal Abbas has kept lioness called Queen as a pet since she was two-months-old

It's a baby boom for the owner of a pet lioness in central Pakistan. The African lioness named Queen has given birth to five healthy cubs - double the usual twoto-three-cub litters among lions. Owner Malik Fazal Abbas said he has had 4-year-old Queen since she was twomonths-old. She mated with a male lion that Abbas also keeps at his home in the city of Multan. The pair has already had a litter of two cubs, now nine months old. Abbas, a cotton and mango-grower, says he has a license from the Pakistani Wildlife Department to keep lions as pets - a dream he has since he was a boy.

He’s not the only exotic pet owner in Pakistan. The tiger is a symbol of the ruling party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and some supporters keep tigers that they bring out during election campaigns. "You know, it's brave to hug lions," said Abbas from his home, which has a separate section for his animals. “But keeping wildlife as pets is not a hobby easy to afford," he added. His lion and lioness each eat 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of meat a day. The nine-months-old cubs each consume around nine kilograms (20 pounds) of meat daily.

Abbas said his family was initially uneasy with the lions but later grew more comfortable, even feedings the cubs from milk bottles. He has a caretaker for the animals, and claims he follows all precautions and safety measures to ensure his lions harm no one. His neighbours often come to visit the lions with their families. A Pakistani wildlife department official, Ghulam Muhammad, said it was legal to keep the animals as pets, as long as they do not endanger anyone. "We make sure in our visits that the owners have all the protections in place," Muhammad said.

Jihadist chief killed in Tunisia

MASTERMIND: Algerian Lokmane Abou Sakhr is alleged to have put the terrorist attack together, he was killed on 28th March along with at least eight others from the notorious Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade

Tunisia said that it had killed the leader of the jihadists behind the massacre at its national museum, as foreign leaders joined thousands of Tunisians in a march against extremism. Chanting "Tunisia is free! Terrorism out!" the demonstrators marched in a sea of red Tunisian flags to the capital's Bardo Museum, where 21 foreign tourists were killed in the 18th March jihadist shooting rampage. "The Tunisian people have proven that they will not give in to terrorism. My thanks go out to all and I tell the Tunisian people: 'Forwards. You are not alone,'" President Beji Caid Essebsi said after joining the march with foreign dignitaries. French President Francois Hollande, whose country held a similar march after January's attacks in Paris, was among the figures attending along with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas. "We must all fight against terrorism," Hollande told reporters after the march. "Tunisians wanted this international solidarity." Renzi said: "We are here today to give a message of hope... We want to say that Tunisia does not stand alone: we are together in combating terrorism." Tunisian authorities earlier said Lokmane Abou Sakhr - an Algerian who allegedly masterminded the museum

attack - was killed along with at least eight others from the notorious Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade. Officials had accused Abou Sakhr and his group of organising the attack on the Bardo National Museum carried out by two gunmen who were shot dead, despite a claim of responsibility from the Islamic State jihadist group. Tunisian forces "were able (on 28th March) to kill the most important members of the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade including its head Lokmane Abou Sakhr," Prime Minister Habib Essid told reporters. Interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told AFP that security forces had killed "nine terrorists" in an operation in the west-central area of Sidi Aich. Interior Minister Gharsalli Najem told a news conference

they had been shot at a checkpoint while travelling by car. Authorities say Okba Ibn Nafaa has been behind a series of attacks on security forces that have left some 60 dead since late 2012. During the official march, a stone tablet was unveiled with the names of the foreign tourists and a Tunisian policeman killed in the attack. The authorities gave no immediate estimate for the number of participants in the march, which took place amid tight security. "Tunisia is not a country of jihad, extremism and terrorism!" yelled Majda Friga, a participant wrapped in the Tunisian flag. "Let the terrorists leave our lands. Let them go to hell and leave us in peace," said Fadhila Lahmar, a woman in her 60s. Tunisia has seen an upsurge in

Islamic extremism since overthrowing longtime strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, but it has taken pride in forming a democratic government since the Arab Spring -- in marked contrast to countries such as Libya, Syria and Yemen. The moderate Islamist Ennahda main opposition party called on its supporters to join the march "as an expression of Tunisian unity". The country's powerful UGTT trade union also urged its supporters to take part. However, the leftist opposition Popular Front called for a boycott, accusing some participants of "hypocrisy", referring to accusations that the Islamists in power after Tunisia's 2011 revolution had failed to act against jihadists. The march in Tunis echoed a similar anti-extremism demonstration in Paris after the deadly attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly and a kosher supermarket. The tourists killed at the museum were from Italy, Japan, France, Spain, Colombia, Australia, Britain, Belgium, Poland and Russia. Officials have described the attack as "a big blow" to Tunisia's crucial tourism industry. Authorities have arrested nearly two dozen suspects in connection with the attack and fired senior police officials over alleged security failures.

Second blogger murdered in Bangladesh A blogger was hacked to death by assailants using machetes in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday, the second attack in five weeks on a critic of religious extremism in the Muslimmajority nation. Washikur Rahman, a blogger advocating secularism, was attacked by young religious students on a busy street in the centre of

Dhaka on Monday morning, a police official said. In recent years, religious militants in Bangladesh have targeted secularist writers while the government has tried to crack down on hardline Islamist groups seeking to make it a Shariabased state. “The horrifying murder of a blogger this morning... must be a ‘wake-up call’ to the authorities on the need to

Last month U.S.-based blogger Avijit Roy, another secularist, was hacked to death while returning with his wife from a book fair in Dhaka. His wife, Rafida Bonya Ahmed, suffered head injuries and lost a finger. Bangladesh's government and main opposition have been locked for months in a standoff that has created a sense of deepening insecurity.

ISIS now victimising the dead Militants fighting for the Islamic State have now turned their savagery on the dead, tearing down graves and smashing tombs at a cemetery in Syria. Not content with the rape and massacre of the estimated four million brutally oppressed people living under the terror group's control in Syria and Iraq, ISIS jihadis are now victimising the dead. Claiming gravestones and tombs are a form of veneration of the dead and only distract from the worship of Allah, the heavily-armed, camouflage-wearing militants are seen happily reducing the hilltop cemetery to large piles of rubble as they pull town and smash the stone monuments. The chilling images are believed to have been taken in the Syrian province of Raqqa and shows a hilltop cemetery overlooking what appears to be farmland. Having parked their motorcycles at the gates of the graveyard, several militants are seen inside pulling over tombstones while sympathisers stand alongside them taking photographs. One image shows the men reducing the graves to rubble as they pull them over and use what appears to be an iron bar to smash the stones into tiny pieces. As some of the elder militants

A final image appears to show the militants gathering some of the debris from the site - ostensibly to be taken away and used as building material in Raqqa - the capital of the province and the de facto capital of the terrorists' self-declared caliphate. The chilling images emerged as thousands of Syrians fled Idlib

province over the weekend, fearing government reprisals a day after opposition fighters and a powerful local Al Qaeda affiliate captured the northwestern town, activists said. Idlib, with a population of around 165,000 people, is the second provincial capital to fall to the opposition after Raqqa, which is now a stronghold of the Islamic State group. Its capture by several factions led by the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front underscores the growing power of

extremist groups in Syria, who now control about half the country. The Nusra Front and Syrian rebels have controlled the countryside and towns across Idlib province since 2012, but Assad's forces had maintained their grip on Idlib city, near the border with Turkey, throughout the conflict. Now that the city is in the hands of rebels, who stormed government buildings and tore down posters of Assad, many residents fear that troops will retaliate harshly. Muayad Zurayk, an activist based

in Idlib province, said via Skype that 'residents are fleeing the city to nearby villages and towns.' He added that the situation was relatively quiet in the city now despite some government shelling. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed some people were fleeing the city. Also in Idlib, activists said members of a Syrian security agency killed more than a dozen detainees before withdrawing from a detention center in the city. The activists said the killings were conducted shortly before rebels took the so-called security compound in Idlib. The Idlib Media Center showed a video of what it said were at least 12 bloodied bodies inside a room at the Military Intelligence Directorate. The Observatory said 15 men were found shot dead inside the compound. The group said 53 other detainees, including two women, were freed by the rebels in the compound. More than 220,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict, which began with an Arab Spring uprising in March 2011 and turned into an insurgency following a brutal military crackdown.

Among the new generation of actors, there’s one quality that is very admirable - they don’t shy away from appreciating other actors in the industry. Arjun Kapoor has praised Ranbir Kapoor whole-heartedly for the kind of films he’s doing. Said Arjun: “Ranbir Kapoor is a superstar. “The choices that he has made have been bold and have paid off and he continues taking risks. ‘Bombay Velvet’ is going to be another risk for him. “No actor can control the commerce of film beyond a point any which ways, but he’s always been very brave. He’s loved by everybody.” He further added: “We, as actors look forward to seeing a Ranbir Kapoor film - because he does deliver, and if he’s doing a film it must be good or there must be something to it. “You will never disregard a Ranbir Kapoor film. Even when he does a film in a special appearance, it has the burden of expectations. Therefore, in our generation, he is leaps and bounds ahead. “He’s been here for a while and has made some very good choices. Classically trained singer and songwriter Safra Paul’s singing ability was evident from a young age, but the Bedford-born artist followed the more traditional route of academic study and the world of work before fully immersing herself in her musical pursuits. Alongside formal training, Safra has performed choral works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries with classical greats such as Aled Jones, Hayley Marsh and Faryl Smith. She has also performed with her local church choir, often as a soloist, and has participated in musical festivals and a number of charity events across the country. Safra's talent has been recognised by others in the industry, and many opportunities have come her way. After singing a famous cover in the studio, she was given due recognition for her outstanding vocal ability and her original style and has since worked with producers and artists such as Guy Stanway and Nikki Murray, and diversified in the

urban Asian music scene collaborating with V-Dubl-E and Des C. Guy Stanway of ZY Records and all round Musician & Vocalist, Nikki Murray produced and enabled Safra to record two contemporary tracks 'Never Wanted to be Loved' (uptempo pop) and 'I Try' (a country sounding ballad). After a recent hiatus she has been working with producer Richard West and collaborating with Tim Laws (T-Rox Music Publishing and Productions Ltd) on the track 'Shattered' and in the studio with the talented country blues singer Cherry Lee Mewis. Safra's musical style is original yet versatile, and this enables her to reach a wide and diverse audience. She has a work ethic that is second to none and continues to challenge herself daily, often venturing outside of her comfort zone to achieve the limitless possibilities within her reach. Her latest single ‘Shattered’ is out now via iTunes and other digital platforms.

Lata Mangeshkar sings after three-year break Living singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, who is extremely choosy in singing for films, has now sung a song for a first Indian Norwegian collaboration film called ‘Dunno Y2 Life Is A Moment’ which is being produced in three languages Hindi, English and Norwegian. It’s a sequel of the internationally acclaimed and award-winning ‘Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyun’. Incidentally, she sang the title track for this flick. The theme song for ‘Dunno Y2 Life Is A Moment’ is about love and will be filmed on Zeenat Aman, Kapil Sharma, Yuvraaj Parashar, Pakistani actress Sadia Khan and European actors. Nikhil Kamath has composed the song and lyrics have been written by Vimal Kashyap. The film, which is directed by Norwegian director Tonje Gjevjon and Indian director Sanjay Sharma, has a mix of Indian and European singers and composers.

Music director Nikhil Kamath says: “Lataji was very impressed with the composition and meaningful lyrics of ‘pal mein rishtey badalte hai…’ from ‘Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyun’. “The song went on to be a great hit all over the world. “Now when I approached her for the song ‘jeena kya hai…’ in ‘Dunno Y’ part 2, after hearing the scratch she felt that this song is very close to her heart. She instantly gave a positive nod. Now after her singing all I can say only she could have sung this song.” Lead actor Yuvraaj Parashar adds ‘Dunno Y’ part one, was screened practically all over the world and at all the festivals whether it was Israel or Sydney or Germany or Houston. “Infact, in Israel everyone knows two Bollywood personalities Raj Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar”. Kapil Sharma adds excitedly “We are very fortunate she has blessed us again! It’s a dream come true…”

With features such as the new InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system and 12.3inch TFT instrument cluster. The original XF’s sleek exterior and luxurious interior made it a desirable, aspirational vehicle. Combined with benchmark driving dynamics, the XF was like nothing else in the segment and has gone on to become Jaguar’s most-awarded car. The car retains its predecessor’s core attributes but uses Jaguar’s advanced aluminium-intensive architecture to elevate them to a completely new level. Featuring 75 per cent aluminium, the architecture enables weight savings of up to 190kg over the outgoing model and an increase in torsional stiffness of up to 28 per cent. The architecture also delivers dramatic improvements in packaging and the proportions so essential to Jaguar design. Though 7mm shorter and 3mm lower than the car it replaces, the all-new XF’s 2,960mm wheelbase is 51mm longer, enabling class-leading rear seat space with more legroom, kneeroom and headroom. The efficiency gains inherent in the lightweight aluminium construction are complemented by the all-new XF’s refined, powerful engine range. The 2.0litre Ingenium diesel engines are available in 163PS/380Nm and 180PS/430Nm ratings and are offered with specially-optimised six-speed manual- and eightspeed automatic transmissions. In 163PS manual form, the allnew XF delivers 104g/km CO2 and is the lightest, most efficient non-hybrid diesel model in the segment – 80kg lighter than its closest competitor. All other engines are matched exclusively to eight-speed automatic transmissions. The 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel benefits from a host of advanced technologies which boost efficiency and refinement still further, and raise output to 300PS and a remarkable 700Nm of torque. The light, stiff bodystructure is also fundamental to the all-new XF’s superb vehicle dynamics. The sophisticated double wishbone and Integral Link suspension – combined with near-50:50 weight distribution – delivers the ideal balance between agility, comfort and refinement. Incorporating all of the learning from F-TYPE and XE, the meticulously-tuned Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) maintains the XF’s benchmark steering feel and response – and contributes to the all-new XF’s outstanding fuel economy. Advanced passive damper technology delivers exceptional ride comfort as standard, but for even better control the Adaptive Dynamics system determines the optimum damper settings for the driving conditions. Jaguar Configurable Dynamics, first developed for FTYPE, provides the ultimate in control and enables the driver to individually tailor settings of the dampers, steering, engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. As with XE, rear-wheel drive ability is enhanced too. AllSurface Progress Control, developed for low-speed driving in adverse conditions, automatically manages the brakes and the throttle to deliver the best possible traction, enabling the car to pull away smoothly and without drama: the driver only has to steer. Infotainment and connectivity is the most advanced Jaguar has ever offered. The all-new InControl Touch Pro system features a 10.2-inch touchscreen and Dual View technology which simultaneously allows the driver to see information such as navigation, while the front seat passenger watches TV or a DVD. To handle the enormous

amounts of data, InControl Touch Pro features a solid-state drive and a quad-core processor, and runs on state-of-the-art, ultra-fast Ethernet – a nextgeneration network offering exceptional data transfer rates. Combined, they deliver incredible graphics, fast response times and truly exceptional performance. Complementing InControl Touch Pro is a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster. Jaguar Land Rover pioneered this technology with the XJ and Range Rover and is now bringing it to the business car segment. To make every journey safer and even more relaxing, the allnew XF offers a wide range of advanced driver assistance systems, and is also the first Jaguar to offer full-LED headlights. The all-new aluminiumintensive Jaguar XF will be manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Castle Bromwich Plant alongside the all-aluminium FTYPE and XJ. Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar says: “In creating the all-new XF, as a design team we have been driven by discipline, the discipline of simplicity. Every exterior line on the XF has a clear purpose – nothing is superfluous. Achieving that simplicity takes time and requires great determination; it’s all too easy to add lines to a car, but much harder to add character by leaving lines out. “Inside too, we have been driven by the desire to ensure the XF’s cabin is as comforting as it is comfortable. New technology, including our new 10.2-inch touchscreen, is combined carefully with materials that cosset and reassure. The all-new XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside – and I’m proud of my team for delivering that,” he adds.

The all-new Focus RS features the innovative Ford Performance AllWheel-Drive system and a specially engineered 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Ford’s all-new high-performance hatchback, the Focus RS, will make its first appearance in America, revealing exclusive new signature colour Nitrous Blue at the New York International Auto Show. This is the first ever Ford RS vehicle to be sold in the U.S. and will be offered in markets all over the world. Ford confirmed deliveries to customers in Europe will start early 2016. “Customers have begged for the Focus RS to come to the United

States for years,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company. “And now we can say that they are getting one of the most innovative, powerful and best-looking RS cars ever. That is special. “The RS line has a proud history of technical breakthroughs. It’s a great example of our passion for innovation through performance, and creating vehicles that make people’s hearts pound,” he adds. One of 12 new performance vehicles Ford will bring to customers globally by 2020 in a new era of Ford performance, the all-new Focus RS features the innovative Ford

Vectoring delivers a new level of handling capability and driver enjoyment, combining outstanding traction and grip with unmatched agility and cornering speed. The high-performance hatchback’s EcoBoost engine shares its fundamental structure with the all-aluminium fourcylinder engine in the all-new Mustang. This engine has, however, been significantly upgraded through a comprehensive package of design changes to deliver a projected output well in excess of 320PS. The all-new Focus RS also introduces advanced performance technologies, and is the first Ford RS equipped with selectable Drive Modes – including an industry-first Drift Mode that allows controlled oversteer drifts – and Launch Control. The exterior design of the all-new Focus RS is both dramatic and functional, with a more powerful and muscular character. It will be offered in a choice of four-coat metallic finish Nitrous Blue and further striking exterior colours including Shadow Black, Magnetic Grey and Frozen White. “This is the ultimate Focus – stunning to look at and entirely fit

for purpose,” said Joel Piaskowski, director, Design, Ford of Europe. “RS models have always been striking, highperformance cars where function is paramount. This new Focus RS is true to that heritage.” Developed by a small team of Ford

Motors

Performance engineers in Europe and U.S., the new Focus RS is the third generation of Focus RS cars, following models launched in 2002 and 2009. The 30th car to wear the legendary RS badge, the Focus RS will be built in Saarlouis, Germany, from late this year.

Making an entry Inspired by motorcycle rubber, Falken shows how future tyres could meet hybrid SUV driver’s challenging demands for both extended range and dynamic handling

It’s just been announced that new entry-level engines, a further four-wheel-drive model and additional equipment options will increase the diversity of features available for the BMW 2 Series Coupé. With the market launch of the new BMW 218i Coupé, a threecylinder petrol engine from the BMW Group’s latest engine family will be featured for the first time in the brand’s sporty

and elegant compact model. State-of-the-art BMW TwinPower Turbo technology is featured on the new power unit provides a maximum power output of 130hp and a maximum torque of 220Nm. The new BMW 218i Coupé accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds. Prices start from £22,355. Furthermore, xDrive, BMW’s intelligent four-wheel drive

system, will also be available for the BMW 220d Coupé. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Coupé the advanced system ensures not only optimised traction and vehicle stability in all road and weather conditions, but also increased dynamics when taking bends at higher speeds and optimal acceleration. The 2 Series Coupé is also now available in luxury guise for

an even more premium feel. Luxury specification is recognisable by the Chrome Line exterior trim and the outer air intake surrounds in the same detail. Also included are 18-inch light alloy wheels. Inside, fineline stream high-grade wood interior trims including an Oxide Silver accent strip, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel and Dakota leather trim in a range of colours all feature.

Hybrid tyre to change the future

A novel tyre that features different tread areas could point the way to how drivers can enjoy both sporty handling and efficiency for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) SUVs. To date, engineers have struggled to develop tyres that offer low rolling resistance to increase the car’s range whilst offering sharp, sporty dynamics expected by sporty SUV drivers. Debuting this month on Mitsubishi’s Concept XR-PHEV II small SUV, powered by a new PHEV system, the outer third of Falken’s concept tyre comprises a primarily low rolling resistance slick surface with intelligently placed water dispersion grooves that prevent hydroplaning and also enhance wet road grip. To offer better grip under hard cornering, the inner third of the tyre features a curved (like a motorcycle) surface that comes in greater contact with the road whilst the car is being pushed harder. “Consumers want to have the best range with a hybrid but aren’t prepared to sacrifice an ‘involving’ driving experience with sporting dynamics,” says Matt Smith, Falken’s UK Director. “A new type of tyre is needed and this concept highlights how Falken could help SUV drivers to achieve efficiency without sacrificing a sportier driving experience.” No production date has been set for the novel tyre but Falken believes that such bespoke tyre technology is the way tyre design will progress. “Tyres play a critical role in the way a vehicle drives and stops,” adds Smith. “Expect to see more bespoke tyres to extract the best all round performance for a car.” Earlier this month Falken announced it now produces a bespoke version of its tyres for the new Volkswagen Passat.

McLaren launches its sports series with 570S Coupe

McLaren has announced that the first model to be launched in its Sports Series family will be called the 570S Coupé. This V8 powered, carbon fibre structured two-seater will show its beautiful yet aerodynamically optimised form for the first time in less than a week when it debuts at the 115th New York International Auto Show.

With the launch of the first Sports Series derivative, the 570S Coupe, McLaren will be displaying its threetier model strategy together in New York for the first time globally. Every Sports Series model will share its DNA with the Super Series and Ultimate Series that sit above it in the McLaren hierarchy. A pure McLaren, offering classleading levels of performance,

coupled with optimised handling characteristics and driving dynamics, the 570S Coupé marks the first time McLaren has offered its pioneering and race-derived technologies in the sports car segment. In line with the naming convention begun with the 650S, the number 570 gives away the power output of this first McLaren Sports Series model: 570PS, which equates to 562 in hp.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to

take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the

country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.

Khan Conquers Newbees Al-Aqsa 2-1 Team NewBees The search for a first win of the season goes on for Team NewBees as they were edged out in a close encounter, going down 2-1 at the hands of high-flying Al-Aqsa. Wasim Khan’s sealed all three points for the eventual victors after Waqar Hussain had earlier levelled for the league’s bottom side. On a positive note, the NewBees did register their first goal of the campaign and can walk away from the latest encounter knowing they should have picked up at least a point with only an inspired goalkeeper performance denying them. From the kick-off the contest was close, with the first chance finally arriving towards the end of the first half as the NewBees’ Jitendar Singh forced a great save from Ahmed Bashir. It was just a sign of things to come from the shot stopper who was almost unbeatable throughout the game. The deadlock was finally broken after half time when Khan got his first if the night, striking the ball on the half volley before it nestled in the keeper’s far corner. However, the lead did not last long as the underdogs struck back almost immediately when Waqar Hussain got in on the action and bagged that elusive goal his side has been searching for over the

Jubodhol go clear as Tino’s stumble past five league games. As the game closed to a finish, it seemed NewBees were the most likely team to take away three points, yet Bashir in the opposing goals continued to pull off save after save. In a cruel blow to the NewBees,

Hyde Park 2-1 JackHammer FC

Hyde Park came back from a goal down to defeat JackHammer FC 2-1 last week, making it back-to-back league wins and closing the gap at the top. Last season’s champions are starting to find their form again this term, and have moved to third place in the table with their latest win keeping them just four points off leaders Jubodhol. Despite their eventual success, Park didn’t have everything go their way early on with JackHammer opening the scoring early on through an individual effort by Sukhy Singh. The forward’s second goal of the year was only his side’s fourth of the campaign with the side struggling for firepower so far. Unfortunately for JackHammer, the lead lasted until just before half time when Tyler Bussue levelled after being played through on goal by Sulayman Osman. The same combination was on show for the winner deep into the second half when Osman once again picked out Bussue for the game to finish 2-1. Bussue did have a chance late on to complete his hattrick yet the post denied him from the goal scoring feat. Man of the Match - Tyler Bussue (Hyde Park)

Old Bacca Boys 1-1 Borussia Teeth

Two of the league’s top footballing sides were held to a 1-1 draw on Thursday as Old Bacca Boys and Borussia Teeth shared the spoils from a closely fought encounter. Perhaps it was Borussia who just about edged the game, yet a solid defensive performance from OBB ensured neither side walked away empty handed. Waleed Akhtar opened the scoring for Teeth yet his side were soon pegged back when Safraz AKhtar scored the goal of the night to equalise. Striking the ball from distance, the ball flew passed a helpless keeper with the goal good enough to win any game. Borussia overall enjoyed more of the ball possession, yet found goal scoring opportunities were very few and eventually settled for the point. Both sides remain with just the one defeat to their names this season, and both occupy mid-table positions respectively. Man of the Match - Safraz Akhtar (OBB)

NFA 1-1 Tetley’s Tino

NFA lost their spot at the top of the SLUK table as they drew 1-1 with NFA in a feisty encounter. Nadeem Saddique came close to opening the scoring in the first minute for TT when his effort went narrowly wide before teammate Hasan Abrar did grab the opener. Tetley’s were looking to make it five wins from six games with a potential victory over an inconsistent NFA yet were setback when an equaliser was fired in moments before the half time whistle. An unstoppable free kick from Rippon Ali saw the talisman get his name on the scoresheet once again, in a moment which seemed to reenergise his side. Kabir Miah came close to putting NFA ahead when he hit the post from range whilst Ali was also presented with chances but was unable to convert before the final whistle. AMIR KHAN CONQUERORS SET TO FACE EACH OTHER – GARCIA VS PATERSON By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk Boxing is a business and more than the glory and recognition for an individual boxer is the need to earn a living and earn enough money to secure retirement. However as boxing fans we expect the best boxers to fight the best and in doing just that the world champion fighters to be worthy title holders. The WBA/ WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) has recently been dubbed by the fight fans as the most “protected” world champion fighter in the world that basically means he is not willing to take on the top fighters in his division but rather take easy win fights. This is certainly the case for Garcia since his knockout win against British Amir Khan that was his most intriguing fight to date. On April 11th 2015 Garcia will be facing his boxing rival IBF world champion Lamont Paterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) in a catch weight contest of 143 pounds at the world renowned Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York. The boxing bout is scheduled for only 10 rounds and many experts believe that this has been purposely done to make sure Garcia does not tire and look bad in a normal 12 round contest. Garcia last fight was against the little known Rod Salka and that contest was also at a catch weight of 143 pounds, but Garcia managed to knockout the limited Salka early in the fight. Garcia prior to the Salka win fought little known but surprisingly tough Mauricio

Khalil Alam

Herrera over 12 competitive rounds and many people had thought Garcia had lost the contest as he was clearly being beaten in nearly every round by Herrera. However Garcia was given the 12 round decision in that fight that was a very controversial. Paterson himself seems to be well past his best and the fight against Garcia seems to have come too late for both of them to make this an interesting contest. Paterson was knocked out by Lucas Matthysse in one his previous fights and other than a win against Amir Khan Paterson has (like Garcia) fought limited opposition. Garcia takes on Paterson after paying his mandatory challenger Viktor Postol (26-0, 26 KOs) a step aside fee as it was likely Postol would have given Garcia a much tougher fight. The Garcia vs Paterson fight is also a non-title contest that means neither fighter has their world title on the line and the loser of this fight will still get to keep their world champion status. The reason for this contest being fought at a catch weight is because Garcia said he wants to make slow, but progressive steps towards the 147lbs weight limit (welterweight) from 140lbs (light welterweight) even though Garcia holds the 140lbs world titles. Another observation of this fight being at the catch weight limit is that the winner of this bout may have a chance to fight “boxing kingpins” Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao after their May 3rd mega fight. I would personally like to see either Garcia or Paterson have a rematch against the much improved boxer Amir Khan even though I expect either fighter not take such a risky fight against Khan based on their previous lack of opposition. The Garcia vs Paterson fight in my view is a dull fight to say the least and the fact that it is being fought at a catch weight with no world titles on the line makes it even less reason to be excited about this match up.

A tough weekend of racing for Force India resulted in the team leaving Malaysia empty handed, as penalties for collisions cost drivers points in difficult conditions in Sepang. Both Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg were handed 10second time penalties after they were involved in separate incidents in quick succession late in the race. First, Perez tangled with Lotus driver Romain Grosjean as the latter attempted an overtake on the outside, before Brazilian Hulkenberg clashed with Red Bull’s Daniel Kyvat. Despite both drivers completing

the race, neither were able to record any points and as such, recorded a blank for only the third time in the pair’s 20 races. The teammates both said they felt unfortunate to be punished, whilst Deputy Team Principal, Robert Fernley, admitted the team

were lacking ‘ultimate pace’ due to the conditions. “It was a challenging afternoon for the team, although we were unlucky not to come away with at least a point,” Fernley said. “Both Checo and Nico gave everything in these conditions and

today and with a fully dry race there was not much that would disrupt the strategy or offer any opportunity to exploit. “Now we need to regroup, continue our work back at base and come back stronger in the near future. Everyone is putting in a real effort to get us back where we belong quickly and it will be hugely rewarding when we are once more fighting closer to the front.” Eventual winner of the Malaysian Grand Prix was Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, ahead of Mercedes’ usual double act, who took second (Hamilton) and third (Rosberg) respectively.

Title shot awaits Khan targets gold after 75 second victory

Back page story continued His previous match, Khan’s first for over two years, ended in similar fashion as the final bell rung after just 65 seconds. Last week’s encounter was another contest where the 32-yearold local boxer showed he is more than ready to step up to higher ranked competition. Miko may have started the liveliest, taking the fight to Khan in the early exchanges yet quickly found himself on the mat when he was hit with a hard blow to the ribs. Despite beating the count, he was floored once more after the minute mark, walking into another heavy left hand, forcing the referee to call time on the contest. Victory ensured Khan will get his chance at the Bantamweight title and he says it is ‘onwards and upwards’ from here.

VICTORY: Khan took just over a minute to defeat Ladislav Miko in Liverpool earlier this month

Explaining how the fight played out, he said: “I would have preferred it to go on a bit longer. It was a six rounder and I really would have liked to get some rounds under my belt, but as I’ve said before ‘you don’t get paid overtime in this game’. “We knew that he would start fast and rush in and the plan was to work off my jab to slow him down, basically to try and get the six rounds under my belt. “It didn’t quite happen that way as he really came at me much quicker than expected, instead I adapted and caught him with a good shot, I saw his legs buckle a bit but he stayed on his feet.” He continued: “I then caught him good with the uppercut and

the body shot, which he went down with. “Then I did more or less the same after the restart, although didn’t think I had caught him quite as well as the first time, but when he got up I don’t think he wanted to know anymore, even if the ref had let it carry on.” Khan thanked his fans and sponsors for their ‘amazing’ support and says he now hopes to bring the title home to Bradford after his 2nd May bout. The contest is scheduled to take place at the iconic York Hall, London, with tickets available from £35 standard and £65 ringside. More information is available by contacting 07756 311 857.
