Secret discrimination continues as the government takes an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach

Public anger at ‘hidden’ pensions policy Nearly half of the British public would vote for a political party that plans to unfreeze the pensions of more than half a million of our pensioners based outside of the UK – according to new research. The OnePoll survey, conducted on behalf of the International Consortium of British Pensioners (ICBP), found that 41 per cent of the 1,000 people polled would vote for a party who stated they would unfreeze pensions for British nationals based abroad. The issue of frozen pensions refers to current government legislation which sees more than 500,000 British pensioners based abroad faced with their state pension frozen at the same rate as when they left the UK. The vast majority of countries on the government ‘hit list’ for frozen pensions are Commonwealth members,

including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, whereas those British pensioners living in the likes of the US and Europe still receive a fully uprated state pension. Sixty per cent of those polled agreed this was no way to treat British nationals who had contributed to the economy paying both taxes and national insurance - for a number of years. The Prime Minister has recently focused on pensioners based in the UK with the triplelock pensions promise. He said: “I want people when they reach retirement, to know that they can have dignity and security in their old age.” The unfortunate consequence for overseas pensioners is that they will become comparatively worse off simply due to their choice of retirement location. The secret discrimination

continues, as the government takes an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach and relies on a lack of awareness of the issue. Furthermore, Pensions Minister Steve Webb had been claiming the cost to fix this discrimination is £700m but revised figures release by the government last month show the figure for 2014/15 to be significantly lower at £580m – representing just 0.7 per cent of the overall pensions budget. When those polled were informed that the cost to unfreeze pensions would represent just a tiny proportion of the overall pensions budget the majority (59 per cent) agreed that the government should reassess the policy in the upcoming budget. Sheila Telford, chairman of the International Consortium of British Pensioners, said: “We are pleased to see such strong support. It is clear that the British public are capable of recognising discrimination, even if their political leaders are not. “We intend to build on this support, and will be taking this message to marginal constituencies for any party that commits to ending this illogical and discriminatory practice.”

Internet hit EUREKA: Chaz Singh says he had a ‘genius moment’ – this photo taken in Exeter has gone viral after being shared thousands of times on social media

A Sikh councillor has become an internet hit after using a sign to turn a branch of fashion chain ‘Urban Outfitters’ into ‘Turban Outfitters’. Cheeky Chaz Singh, 41, created this hilarious photo by drawing a letter T on a sheet of paper then holding it up outside the store’s frontage. The official was out shopping with his wife Sarah Kaur, 42, in Exeter, Devon, when he spotted the comical photo opportunity. He posted the snap on Twitter where it has been re-tweeted thousands of times. Mr Singh, who is councillor for Plymouth’s Drake Ward, said: “I just had one of those Eureka moments. a pen and some paper and started “I went into the store, asked for to draw the T out.

“People were chuckling as they walked past. One guy realised what we were doing and said it was just amazing.”

Head start for Leeds’ youth

A new fund looking to tackle long term unemployment among 18-24 years olds will launch in March 2014. Towards the end of 2013, Leeds City Region was awarded £4.6million from the Government to deliver the “18-24 Head Start” programme to support young

people into employment. Leeds City Council will receive £1.2million of this money to fund a local programme which will offer 800 young people, aged 18-24 years, who are furthest from the labour market (and claiming jobseekers allowance for six months or more), the chance of a

‘head start’ into work through a supported work experience placement. At a meeting of Leeds City Council’s executive board on Friday 14th February, members will be asked to agree the new programme and how this will be delivered.

Revised learning disability service Senior councillors in Leeds will discuss proposals for an innovative new social enterprise to support people with learning disabilities. The ambitious plans would see Leeds City Council’s Learning Disability Service transfer into the new business model, which would be owned and operated entirely by staff. The service, which has an annual budget of £20.9m, supports more than 1,000 of the city’s most vulnerable adults, providing help and advice as well as hands-on personal care. The move, designed to secure the future of the service, would represent the biggest shift to a social enterprise model of its kind ever to take place in Leeds. A detailed business case has been produced which underpins the proposed model.

After renowned actress Meera Syal joined the fight against cancer, a former sufferer of the disease has spoken to the Asian Express about the importance of checking for the signs. Ranjna Morjaria was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 after finding a lump during a routine check of herself. Despite having no family history of the disease, the 62-year-old explained that she made it a routine to check herself after seeing a mammogram leaflet from the NHS. As the ‘pebble-like’ lump was

20,000 new jobs set for Leeds?

Leeds City Council has unveiled ambitious plans for the future of the city using HS2 as a catalyst for visionary developments on a scale never before seen in Leeds. Plans would see an iconic new rail station built on the south bank representing a stunning keystone in the regeneration of the area, which at 136 hectares will be one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe. The significant regeneration scheme of south bank, comprising Holbeck urban village, areas around the old Tetley brewery and Leeds Dock, would deliver 250,000sqm of employment land with the potential to deliver 20,000 new jobs and 5,000 new homes. Al-Madinah free school stops secondary classes A Muslim free school that was branded ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘inadequate’ by inspectors is to end secondary education. The Government stepped in after a damning Ofsted report warned Al-Madinah in Derby, which teaches around 400 children aged 4-16, was in ‘chaos’. Inspectors said the school was ‘reliant on the goodwill of an interim principal to prevent it totally collapsing’. Although primary education will continue, Schools Minister Lord Nash said: “I have come to the conclusion it would simply not be in the interests of parents or pupils at the secondary school to continue to fund provision which has failed them in the manner now

apparent.” Al-Madinah opened in September 2012 and is described as having ‘a Muslim ethos’. The school has faced claims it discriminated against women, made staff cover their hair even if they are not Muslim and split up boys and girls in classrooms. During its inspection in October 2013, Ofsted found pupils' achievement was inadequate because the expectations of staff were too low. It also found many teachers were inexperienced, had not received the training and support they needed and were unable to deliver effective lessons. A follow-up inspection in

December found there was still ‘no sign of improvement’. A spokesman for the Department for Education said the Government had acted ‘swiftly and decisively’ after identifying failures like those at Al-Madinah. “Based on the current situation, we believe the new board... needs to focus efforts on the primary school in order to bring about the level of improvement required,” he said. “The board has accepted our decision to close the secondary school and we have offered our full support in helping pupils to find alternative places before the start of the next academic year.”

Council tax rises

After three years of freezing council tax in the face of heavy cuts, Leeds City Council is having to recommend raising it by 1.99 per cent, along with a 5.9 per cent rise in council house rents, as it has to make a further £50m in savings. As the council enters a fourth year of severe cuts to its funding it can no longer afford a council tax freeze and is also planning to lose up to 200 jobs next year. This is on top of over 1,800 that have gone in the past three years, including 25 per cent of senior manager posts. The council tax rise would represent an increase of 43p a week for a Band D household. Government grant reductions alone have taken £94m out of the council’s budget over the past three years, and this government funding is being further cut by over 10 per cent in the coming year. In addition, the government’s planned changes to the rent-setting formula will mean rents having to go up by 5.9 per cent to balance a loss in income to the council of £3.5m from 2015 and £6.5m the following year in order to protect services to tenants.

River restoration

A range of work to improve three lakes located at one of the Leeds’ most popular parks is now underway. Over a six week period, each of the lakes at Temple Newsam Park will be drained to allow machinery to remove silt and leaves that have built up over the years, with the mud rich in nutrients that is taken out being used as a soil improver at a nearby field. Once this clearance is completed a number of other improvements will also be made, including repairs to some of the lakes edges, planting to improve water quality and securing the banks with a view to providing a haven for wildlife. As part of the £106,000 scheme, which includes a grant of £45,000 accessed by GrantScape from the Caird Bardon Community Programme, the lakes will be safely fenced off and the lakeside paths and car park will be intermittently closed to allow access for machines and vehicles.

Textile History set for museum

A new micro manufacturing project which will celebrate the rich textile heritage of Leeds and Yorkshire has been launched at a city museum. Bringing together a unique mixture of expert skill and material from the region, the aim of the project is to create high quality cloth using the machinery of a 1921 Hattersley ‘Standard Loom’ currently residing at Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills. Developed through a collaboration between Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills and Yorkshire Textiles by designer Susan Gaunt, the ‘Armley Mills Cloth’ is produced with 100 per cent British wool yarn spun by Laxtons Yarns, a specialist yarn manufacturer in Guiseley and Sunny Bank Mill Textile Archive, a business in Farsley. Nine-year-old boy approached by stranger at Bradford primary school Parents warned to vigilant after second stranger alert case in four months

Safer Communities Fund Up to half a million pounds a year in criminal assets is to be delivered back to communities in West Yorkshire, after Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns Williamson launched the Safer Communities Fund. The initiative will see money, seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act within the county, fed into a single pot of cash, exclusively for community safety initiatives. Local organisations and groups across the county will be able to submit applications of up to £10,000. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark BurnsWilliamson said: “I have launched the Safer Communities Fund to bring together money seized from criminals across the county into a single

community purse. “I want to make it easier for local groups and organisations to receive money under the Proceeds of Crime Act and make a difference to the local communities. “Thousands of pounds recovered from criminals will be made available in four bidding rounds per year. Each submission must also meet the priorities and outcomes outlined in my Police and Crime Plan. “Under current legislation, the Government keeps half of the money seized from criminals in West Yorkshire, however; I want to see all of that returned to the county. This could potentially double the cash available within my Safer Communities Fund and help to keep people safe and feeling safe.”

A Bradford Primary school has been put on high alert after a pupil was approached by an Asian man at the school gates. For the second time in less than four months, Cavendish Primary School, on Hall Road, Eccleshill, has been at the centre of a ‘stranger danger’ case as a nine-year-old was reportedly targeted by an unknown man. The school has sent out cautionary texts to all parents in regard to the case urging them to be vigilant and careful with their children, whilst police have begun an investigation into the report. The boy told teachers he was concerned by the man, who he had never seen before, after getting dropped off by his mother at the school gates. Describing him as Asian, in his mid 30s and balding,

teachers immediately checked CCTV for footage of the culprit and informed police immediately, who then commenced a search of the area. It is not the first time the school has been involved with an apparent abduction case. In October 2013, a similar case was seen at the school gates when a 61year-old man was arrested and bailed after grabbing the wrist of a three-yearold girl as she walked with her mother. That time the suspect was also alleged to have spoken inappropriately to the girl before fleeing. Police had stressed it was an isolated incident and urged parents not to worry. Neighbourhood policing team officers will now be patrolling the area at start and end of the school day whilst the investigation continues.

Tackling Bridgewater’s winds

Leeds City Council has reviewed its wind policy covering the Bridgewater Place junction to include further safety precautions in the light of a coroner’s recommendations. Councillors will be asked to approve the revised conditions covering when and how the junction around Yorkshire’s highest skyscraper should be closed in the face of high winds. It will mean that the road junction will be closed to traffic and pedestrians, with pedestrians instead being diverted to a footway to the east and protected by an extended shelter. The lower 45mph wind speed trigger for actionalready in use informally- will also be confirmed. The review was conducted after an inquest found that freak wind conditions that led to a lorry being blown onto Dr Edward Slaney had been caused by the building itself.

British Asian Trust welcomes their latest ambassador, Zayn Malik One Direction Star, and Bradford boy, Zayn Malik, has been named as the latest official ambassador for the British Asian Trust. The 21-year-old was praised by the charity’s executive director for his ‘immense talent’ as part of the world’s biggest boyband. The trust provides funding to help disadvantaged people in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Zayn joins fellow British Asian Trust Ambassadors: Naughty Boy, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Dev Patel, Mishal Husain, Laila Rouass, Preeya Kalidas, Nitin Ganatra

and Nina Wadia, as they continue to raise funds for South Asian projects. A Huddersfield-based children’s hospice was proud to announce the arrival of two new ambassadors earlier this week. ITN newscaster, Nina Hossain, and serial entrepreneur, Graham Leslie, were welcomed to the positions at Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice after working with the charity in the past. Nina, from a Bangladeshi background, currently presents the news on ITV and helped launch the charity’s Tea Party Campaign in August, attending a special Yorkshire Day tea party with her own children. As a keen supporter of the charity, which covers the Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield areas, Nina said she was looking forward to helping the team raise vital funds throughout the upcoming years. She said: “I hope that Graham [Leslie] and I can work together, to help in any way possible, to get the message out there about how vital the work is that Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice does for its community. “There are 700 families that could benefit from the care and support from the charity and we need to make them aware of the help that is available to them.

Creatures which roamed the earth millions of years ago are to make a sudden return to Bradford in upcoming months as Dinosaur Discovery opens up behind Tong Garden Centre. An array of model dinosaurs will inhabit the currently empty land in the spring, as the attraction aims to educate visitors about their prehistoric history from the Triassic era through to the Ice Age. The idea comes from former theme park designer, Christian Cristobal, who moved to Yorkshire from the Philippines ten years ago.

After working as a landscape artist for many years he felt compelled to return to his roots to create a dinosaur attraction amongst the woodland at Tong Lane. The huge models, which include animatronic versions as well as static designs, will range from wooly Mammoths, to a Tyrannosaurus Rex and even the flying Velociraptor. Replica moving dinosaurs and other extinct beasts will be included along a trail and Cristobal hopes the area will be used in early education and become a

Speaking about opening the new site, he said: “One day I woke up and thought, ‘I’m going to do it, I’m going to open my own dinosaur park’. I went out and told my friends and they all said I was mad. “What we’re working on at the moment is the wow factor; we’re working on the gimmicks to entertain people, like putting on the costume and chasing the children. They love it. We’re trying to bring some drama to the experience. “I’ve been living in Yorkshire for ten years now and no

new attractions have been built. Instead of taking your kids away somewhere this park would be something to do locally. It’s a unique attraction.” Cristobal has had to battle against the weather conditions recently, with the launch of ‘Dinosaur Discovery’ put on hold due to torrential downpours. However, despite having to make alterations to damaged models, which each need more than 12 hours to make, he remains optimistic that Yorkshire’s own ‘Jurassic Park’ will open in the Spring. The dinosaurs have been on show in various locations in the past with minimal fees charged for entry, a pricing strategy which will continue at the Tong site.

Bradford Triathlon set for city

Bradford Council is hosting its first triathlon using the Great Northern Trail on Sunday 20th April. Triathlons have become hugely popular, especially through the Brownlee brothers who are members of the Bingley Harriers & Athletics Club. Both Alistair and Jonny are former World Champions and Alistair is the current Olympic champion in this growing event. The government’s ‘Help to Buy’ mortgage guarantee scheme can now also be used by providers of Home Purchase Plans, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid, announced this week. Home Purchase Plans (HPPs) are a Sharia law compliant alternative to mortgages and are often known as ‘Islamic Mortgages’. The Help to Buy scheme has already helped thousands get on or move up the housing ladder, and the government remains committed to making the aspiration of home ownership a reality for as many households as possible. In line with this the government has been looking at how to open up access to the Help to Buy mortgage guarantee schemes, so that providers of HPPs can also benefit. From this week the rules have been amended to enable banks that sell HPPs to purchase a government guarantee for them. Additionally, the Islamic Bank of Britain have stated their intention of participating to offer Home Purchase Plans under the scheme. This will be particularly supportive to some Muslim homebuyers who have been unwilling to use a traditional Help to Buy mortgage because of their religious beliefs. However, the inclusion of HPPs in the Help to Buy scheme introduces more choice for all consumers and perspective homebuyers. Sajid Javid said: “I am

delighted Home Purchase Plans will now be available under the Help to Buy scheme. This gives even more choice to hardworking families across the UK trying to fulfil their home owning aspirations.” Under an HPP, a property’s ownership is split between the customer and the bank. After buying a portion of the property with their initial deposit, the purchaser of the property pays regular installments to the bank, covering rent for the portion they do not own and an acquisition payment. In this way a customer gradually buys the property from the bank and eventually becomes the sole owner. In order to purchase the government guarantee, banks will have to satisfy the same stringent criteria for an HPP as for a normal mortgage. HPPs sold in the UK are also subject to regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), in much the same way as mortgages. The Help to Buy extension builds on the government’s commitment to support the UK Islamic finance market, worth around £11bn each year, and retain London’s position as the premier western Islamic financial centre. At last year’s World Islamic Economic Forum in London – the first outside the Islamic world – the government announced its intention to issue a sovereign Sukuk, or Islamic bond, for the first time. It also eased lending restrictions on and oversaw the

introduction of two new financial products, Islamic student and start-up loans. This follows the establishment of Islamiccompliant student and start-up loans, to encompass all faiths and the setup of an Islamic Index on the London Stock Exchange. The action and innovation on consumer financial products, including home loans, student loans and business loans among others, will ensure all sections of society can help drive growth in the economy and support the UK in the global race.

Commemorations for founder of Bradford Masjid Celebrating the life of Shaykh Sufi Mohammed Aslam

Since the Masjid was developed in 2010, crime in the area of Manningham has fallen as a whole whilst the place of worship has promoted the Islamic values of ‘peace, love and tolerance’. A special gathering was held in the Shaykh’s honour, with his eldest son, Sahibzada Sufi Amjad Aslam, organising the event in which more than 600 people, from across the UK, attended. The event was also streamed live over the internet to many more who wished to pay their respects including in places such as the US, Pakistan and Poland. Amid the celebration of the Shaykh’s life, the programme included spiritual meditation, known as dikhr, Quran recitation, Nasheeds and speeches in English and Urdu. The Shaykh's achievements and life were remembered, ranging from stories of his selfless acts in the Bradford District for over 35 years, to him putting the community first, over even his own health, living for almost 20 years with just one lung.

The Grand Supplication included over 74 Quran's read, 3.3 million salutations on Prophet Muhammad and hundreds of thousands of other praiseworthy chapters read from the Quran by people from all over the world. Nazim Ali, NADA's General Secretary, said: “We at NADA are grateful for all the unwavering love and support of the local and wider community during what has been an understandably emotional period for us. “We endeavour to build steadfastly on the solid foundations left by our beloved Shaykh in engaging in civic renewal and upholding the Islamic values of ‘Peace, Love and Tolerance’. “Our resolute drive and determination to make a difference in people's lives is as strong as it has ever been.” NADA has continued to actively work with the local community and has raised funds for several causes throughout the past 12 months, with more planned for the near future. Included in the past events were: a Team Minarets climb of Mount Snowdon – which raised £16,000, the sixth annual ‘Bringing Communities Together’ football tournament, delivering gifts to the Children’s Ward 17 at Bradford Royal Infirmary during Eid and much more. Fundraisers aim to tackle tricky 15k

A Hilly Challenge A team of fundraisers from Halifax are hoping to overcome a tall challenge later this month as they attempt to conquer the route from Halifax to Bradford. The team, running on behalf of nationwide charity, Islamic Relief, will be setting off on Monday 24th February as they tackle the hilly course between Halifax town centre and Centenary Square in Bradford. Organised by Khwaja Arfan Mir, who will be running alongside a number of family members, he explained why he decided to set up the ‘fundraising mission’. “Initially it was just going to be me doing the run but as I started mentioning it to people, others wanted to get involved so I thought ‘why not?’” he said. “I feel that people do want to help with fundraising but too often they just don’t know where to turn or how to begin.

Hopefully by them joining in this run we can raise important funds for the vulnerable people in Syria. “I truly believe that there are good people out there

who just need something like this to get started with their fundraising.” He added: “If I raise just £20, at least it will be £20 more than nothing going

towards a great cause.” Confronting the testing uphill route, will be a team of runners, joggers and walkers who want to raise money to help Syria’s

suffering population. Since the civil war began, more than one million people have been left homeless with many children becoming orphans. Mohammed Mohsin Qayyuum, will also be doing the run and explained why he signed up to take part: “I got involved initially because it seemed like a really good thing to do to help children in Syria in particular. “It could have been any cause really and been worthy but I look forward to this challenge and helping these most vulnerable.” Ehsan Ali Mir and Haider Ali are also helping with the fundraising efforts and urged anybody who can to come down and get involved on the day. A team of English firefighters are set to embark on a different type of challenge later this year as they attempt to extinguish any bad habits that exist within the Pakistan Fire Service. Spearheaded by the Asian Fire Service Association (AFSA), a group of between five and seven volunteers will head out to South Asia in April on a fact finding mission to build up a clear picture of what needs improving in Pakistan. The team will visit the Punjab, an area which has some of the best access to fire stations in the country, for a short visit to better understand the current level of performance. With a number of factory fires tearing down buildings in the country recently, alongside the 2013 earthquake, fire prevention and disaster management will be top of the agenda for the crew. Kirklees District Prevention Manager, Mohammed Ali, was selected as Project Manager for the trip and has regularly visited the country in the past. Alongside members of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Lancashire FRS and Tyne and Wear FRS, he will visit the country in the Spring to begin work on the Punjab Project. The 40-year-old Bradford resident was proud to join the initiative and hopes it will be a longterm project which will expand into further areas in Pakistan. Explaining why he got involved with the Punjab Rescue project, Mohammed said: “From the first time I heard about the project I was very interested in not only being able to utilise my skills but also help others. “Here in West Yorkshire we have many ethnic minority residents with families over in the Punjab and Kashmir areas, I myself am from Kashmir. “Seeing people die in these areas through fire, because the wrong infrastructure, or no infrastructure, is in place to deal with

emergency, gives me that bit more motivation to go out there and help. If we help save one life, we have succeeded.” Mohammed has been with the fire service for more than ten years yet has never been involved with such a pioneering project. Alongside representatives from fire stations up and down the country, he will be one of the first people tasked with building the relations between the two countries. As well as ‘looking forward’ to embarking on the trip, he explained what the team would exactly be doing during the first visit. “What we will do when we are out there, amongst other things, is a risk assessment,” he said. “We will look at different parts of the operational side, record the findings, come back here and review where the current standard is at, what needs improving and how best to advance. “We want to ensure that their fire crews are operating at an international level, so hopefully we will build a training package around what needs improving and then send out another team in September or October who can then start to implement and deliver what we have agreed on.” He added: “Eventually it would be great if we could send over resources for these trained staff to use, and then even roll out the project into other areas of the country.” To fund the trip, a special evening of entertainment is planned to take place on 14th March at the Aagrah Midpoint Restaurant, Bradford, which will act as a fundraising effort for the cause, as well as an Africa expedition project and Waterwell project. Singer/songwriter, Husnain Lahori, is set to headline the night, with food also served up from the famous Aagrah kitchen. In what has been, primarily, a call from South Asian communities to reform the coroners system in making the loss of loved ones less harrowing, Bradford has signed off contracts to bring non-evasive post mortem facilities to the city. Ground-breaking £1.5 million 3-D equipment will be installed at Bradford's Forensic Science Centre this year, an extension at the Burnham Avenue mortuary, off Rooley Lane. The state-of-the-art equipment provided by Malaysian-based life science enterprise iGenei, is intended to be less harrowing for relatives when dealing with the death of a loved one. The three dimensional visualisation software and scanner provides a possible alternative to the traditional post mortem procedures without a surgical dissection of the body. This may mean that eventually up to 70 per cent of post-mortem examinations could be noninvasive. In some cases, the process may allow the body to be released for a funeral sooner, providing there are no further investigations to follow. The contract was signed by Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, Imran Hussain last week. Commenting on the new facility, Councillor Imran Hussain said: “We are proud to be pioneering this modern technology as Bradford is one of the first places in the country to have a digital autopsy facility. “It will be welcome news for all bereaved families as traditional invasive post mortems can be distressing for relatives. This new technology will ensure we can offer a less invasive post mortem to families as an alternative in appropriate cases.” Bradford will be the second city in the country after Sheffield to use the modern technology.

A newly formed partnership, between an education charity and the Mo Farah Foundation is hoping to inspire and empower young people in Somalia. The Tauheedul Relief Trust will be working with the foundation and will begin with a programme to support schools in Somalia with resources, books, furniture, meals and health initiatives. The partnership was launched with the presentation of a £20,000 donation to the Mo Farah Foundation by the Tauheedul Relief Trust in Blackburn on the 10th February 2014. Funds received will be used by the Mo Farah Foundation to implement and deliver key areas of their education programme. Huddersfield regeneration Work has started on bringing a landmark building in Huddersfield town centre back to life. The five storey property, which occupies a prominent position on the corner of Railway Street and St George’s Square, is being refurbished and converted into apartments. The Grade II Listed building dates from 1856. It forms part of Tite’s Buildings, named after the architect Sir William Tite and originally used by textile merchants for offices and warehousing. The premises housed the popular Alassio coffee bar from the 1950’s, before a serious fire in the late 1980’s. Since then, the building has been derelict and shrouded in scaffolding for the last few years.

A group of young people from Huddersfield’s Pakistan Youth Forum (PYF) helped to commemorate the loss of over six million human lives in one of the world’s most tragic genocides of ethnic cleansing in recent history. Staged at Huddersfield Town Hall, the event was held to coincide with the unveiling of a sculpture, designed by artist Antonia Stowe, made up of six million buttons in remembrance of each life which was lost during the Holocaust. The young people from the PYF displayed their work alongside fellow community groups and adults, with design similar to that of the centerpiece. Their particular contribution was to develop a table top model which demonstrated their own take on what the Holocaust meant to them. Throughout the day, the young people said they found the event ‘informative’ and ‘inspiring’ reminding them about important values such as ‘respecting human life’. PYF Project Coordinator, Sofia Buncy, emphasised the importance of learning about such historic events which affected so many people’s lives. She said: “What impressed me

most was how hard young people worked to understand and to help to commemorate something that happened in the past. “Tragedies are still ongoing in other countries today and these needs to be challenged and addressed as we all have a humanitarian commitment to this. Thus the Holocaust Memorial event has a real meaning for us all.”

Pakistan International Airlines has once again come under fire from angry customers after they were made to wait almost 20 hours for a flight to finally arrive at Leeds Bradford Airport last week. After an exhausting ninehour flight, which had already been delayed two hours, passengers on the PK775 flight from Islamabad to LBA were told that the plane would have to be diverted to Manchester Airport due to adverse weather conditions. Upon arrival at Manchester, the plane was then grounded on the runway for a further four hours with passengers still onboard, before being flown back to LBA for a final time. The whole ordeal resulted in the passengers finally leaving the plane seven hours later than expected, and for a number of Bradford residents affected by the delay, it was the ‘final straw’ for the highlycriticised airline. Mohammed Ilyas was one resident who went to the LBA to collect his 84-yearold grandmother, only to be put through the lengthy ordeal. With his relative not being given any food or water during the delay, Mr Ilyas has now written to the

airline and says this is not the first time something like this has happened with PIA. “It seems that every flight is either delayed or there are complaints with this airline,” he said. “There was that shocking case of the drunk pilot not so long ago and for me PIA are doing nothing to better their reputation. “Thankfully, when I travel to Pakistan I can go by Emirates and stopover in a country yet for elders it is a

big inconvenience. They don’t want to change planes and that means they have to fly with PIA as they are the only providers who do this.” He added: “What happened last weekend was absolutely shocking. For people to be sat on the runway of Manchester Airport for four hours and not be allowed off the plane is ridiculous. “I didn’t meet my grandmother until 2am, despite her plane scheduled for landing the previous afternoon.” Cllr Ishtiaq Ahmed, representative of the Manningham Ward for the Bradford Independent Group, was also waiting for his relatives, including his almost 90-year-old grandmother, to arrive on the same flight. Describing the handling of the situation by the airline as ‘appalling’ and ‘ridiculous’ Mr Ahmed was forced to pay more than £40 in just parking fees, with the additional cost of petrol for two cars to journey to Manchester and back. It is not the first time the Bradford councillor has been affected by PIA and he now believes that boycotting the airline may be the only way to force PIA to ‘change its ways’. He explained: “The only reason most people fly with PIA in my experience is because it is the only direct flight to Pakistan from here. “Other airlines may stop

I hadn’t been on a PIA flight for 18 years and when I did I found that nothing had changed, if anything, things had gotten even worse.” Mr Ahmed flew with the airline at New Year’s and was made to queue for more than four hours to just get on the plane. He believes that this experience, plus last weekend’s incident, has not only emphasised the airline’s poor customer service but reiterated that the time for a boycott may have arrived.

“Every time we are flying with PIA we spend around £500 and £600 and we have to expect some level of customer service,” he said. “My family has told me that on their flight in the weekend, they were never told what was happening and there was just no communication at all. “Things have to change if PIA are to ever learn and if we must boycott the airline to see results,

then maybe that is what we should do.” A PIA spokesperson apologised for the delay in an issued statement. It read: “We do regret the delay and inconvenience caused to our valued customers but sometimes the situation gets beyond human control. “We once again apologise to our valued customers and assure them of better service in future.”

Operation Viper bites in Bradford Deadly haul of weapons seized during raids Crossbows, swords, knives and a revolver were just some of the lethal weapons found during a day of raids by West Yorkshire Police in Bradford as Operation Viper struck again. Specialist entry teams carried out 10 warrant searches throughout the city, as the haul of weapons were seized and seven people were arrested. Working alongside neighbourhood police officers, CID teams and Viper officers, the team completed the first day of an intensive week of searching on Tuesday 28th January. Following a search of a property on Allison Lane, Bolton Woods, a 28-year-old man was arrested on firearms offences after a number of air weapons were recovered. A 49-year-old man and a 55-yearold woman were also arrested from a property on Sewell Road, Laisterdyke, after suspected Class A crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of £800, was found in a kitchen cupboard. Further arrests included a 45year-old man from Elsdon Grove, Little Horton, who was taken into

custody on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class B drugs after officers uncovered around a kilogram of cannabis at the property. Two other people have also been arrested in connection with three burglaries and one man was taken into custody on suspicion of cannabis possession. Chief Superintendent Dickie Whitehead, who leads Operation Viper, said: “This week is just one of a number of proactive tactics we are employing as we aim to turn the fear of crime onto criminals themselves. “The week of action in Bradford follows on from a similar operation in Leeds that helped to reduce incidents of burglary by over 20 per cent. “The seizure of Class A and B drugs removes them from the local market place and recovery of the cache of weapons is something that makes the streets of Bradford a safer place for local people.”

Schools still rife with racism

75 per cent of bullying incidents in Bradford schools are racist

Racism in schools has been pushed to the fore with people questioning how big the issue actually is. Britain and in particular Yorkshire is seen as a multicultural area where people accept each other from different walks of life. It has been revealed that racism is the biggest type of bullying at schools in Bradford accounting for 75 per cent of incidents during the last academic year. Previously, there was no statutory requirement nationally, and never has been, that racist incidents should be recorded. However, when the new Ofsted framework, which came into effect on 1 January 2012, and was then slightly revised for September 2012, it made clear that inspectors expected schools to keep detailed records not only of racist incidents but also of all prejudice-related incidents. Though figures are not yet documented, previously a total of 344 bullying incidents were

reported by schools in the Yorkshire district between September, 2010, and July, 2011, of which 260 were deemed to be racist, in figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request show. Figures also suggest that racist incidents in schools accounted for more than half of the recorded bullying incidents. Other types of bullying reported by schools during this period include incidents relating to disability, family nationality or lifestyle, homophobia, gender and religion. A former headteacher Ray Honeyford, who died aged 77 in 2012, had sparked a national scandal in 1984 when he wrote an article warning that “Asian ghettoes” would be created within the country’s inner cities. He was vilified as a racist for criticising multi-culturalism. In his report, he criticised councils for allowing children to be “sent to the Indian subcontinent” during term time and also hit out at what he called propaganda from “multi-

racial zealots” and council bureaucracies which he argued made freedom of speech difficult to maintain. At the time he was the headmaster of Drummond Middle School which served a predominantly Asian area of Bradford. The reaction to his article led to protests, reported death threats being made against him and the then calls for him to be removed from his job followed. However in 2004, 20 years later, Trevor Philips, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality and a former Labour

parliamentary candidate, asserted that children needed to be given a “core of Britishness.” Multiculturalism, he argued, suggested “separateness.” Almost 30 years have passed since Honeyford first made these comments yet have times really moved on? If racism is still prevalent within schools it seems Britain has a long way to go before it really becomes a fair, multicultural state.

Bradford Council’s Road Safety Team has commissioned Tiny Giants Theatre Company to present performances and workshops to Year 9 students, with the performance ‘PERFECT’ tackling issues of seatbelt wearing and driver distraction. ‘NEW WHEELS’ is aimed at Year’s 10 and over, and addresses dangerous driving, driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, seatbelts, and driver distraction. Both these performances are based on true stories and complement other work being carried out by the Council’s Road Safety Team in schools across the district to convey important safety messages.

Whilst this figure is lower than surrounding local authorities there is a lot of work still to do.”

A UKIP Commonwealth spokes-man, who played a key role in boosting the party’s multicultural credentials, was forced to resign after it was discovered that he had been the leader of a major kidnapping gang. 35-year-old Mujeeb ur Rehman Bhutto, from Leeds, has admitted being 'boss' of the kidnapping circle and also confessed that he had admitted charges in a UK court under a different name in 2005. Suspicions arose when Bhutto mysteriously ‘vanished’ from the UKIP’s website just before the new year. Now UKIP have tried to distance itself from Bhutto, saying he has resigned of his own accord after he was confronted about his criminal history. Bhutto, had been pivotal for UKIP in gathering a following from the Asian communities in Britain. He had even organised two visits to mosques in Rochdale and Bradford last year for UKIP leader Nigel Farage and helped canvass in a key by-election in which the party came close to gaining its first MP. But, in the latest embarrassment for the party, Bhutto has been exposed as being the ‘boss’ of a high-profile gang which struck in Karachi in 2004, in a kidnapping that netted him a £56,000 ransom payment. The money was found hidden in Bhutto's bed in a house in Leeds,

Former UKIP party member Mujeeb ur Rehman Bhutto exposed as the head of a Pakistani kidnapping gang and he was forced to repay it when he appeared in court. His apparent respectability as a politician went down the gutter when it was revealed that in June 2004, a gang, led by Bhutto, kidnapped Ahmed Naeem, the son of a wealthy businessman, at gunpoint from a car in Karachi. Five days later Bhutto had flown to England. Police said that at one point, as he negotiated a ransom, he threatened to cut the victim’s head off and post it to his father, Mohammed. He had personally collected the ransom at the Arndale shopping centre car park in Manchester. Bhutto admitted charges in a British court and received a sevenyear jail sentence, but claimed asylum to avoid being deported back to Pakistan. He was sentenced under the name Majeebur Bhutto. Bhutto, from Leeds, told Newsnight he had admitted charges against him rather than risk being sent back to Pakistan

and hanged. He said: “The evidence which was brought against me was from Pakistan. The allegation was simply because of political rivalry and because of my fathers highprofile.” He claimed the case against him in Pakistan had been thrown out by the country’s Supreme Court. However, senior Pakistani police sources told the BBC that Bhutto is still very much wanted. The emergence of Bhutto’s past, comes just a few weeks after David Silvester, a UKIP councillor

in Oxfordshire, provoked ridicule by claiming that this winter’s floods were God’s revenge for the new law allowing gay marriage; and last summer, MEP Godfrey Bloom, who represents Yorkshire and The Humber, caused outrage when he said Britain should not be sending overseas aid to ‘bongo bongo land’. More surprisingly, Bhutto had joined the Conservative party just months after he came out of prison and had defected to UKIP in 2011.

Cabinet has been recommended to approve plans to acquire a recovery-focused treatment service which will improve the health and wellbeing of people and families affected by drug or alcohol misuse. The service will help those in treatment to find employment, or access education or training, which could reduce crime and make communities safer. It will allow the Council to continue protecting the most vulnerable people, whilst providing the best value for money in times of financial pressure. An international Sikh charity has been providing assistance to the people most affected by Britain’s floods in areas across the south of England. As the country was forced to withstand some of the heaviest downpours in recent history, towns and villages in some of the worst affected areas were all but submerged by water, with more bad weather predicted in upcoming days. Khalsa Aid are one charity who are trying to fight the conditions head-on, and last week delivered tonnes of sand to areas in Berkshire, including 10 tonnes to the Colnbrook area and 40 tonnes to Datchet and Wraysbury. Bal Kaur Sandhu of Khalsa Aid, who is coordinating the deployment in Berkshire, said: “Khalsa Aid are spreading their wings to other parts of the country. “We recognise we need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our

communities and support them. “We are also appealing for volunteers to assist Khalsa Aid – hands on assistance is needed in all three areas” Khalsa Aid was the first NonGovernmental Organisation to provide relief and hands on assistance to areas affected by the adverse weather conditions. Since Friday 8th February, Khalsa Aid has been assisting the Somerset region by distributing sand bags, water, antiseptic fluid and other essentials including several dry suits for other community members assisting. On Monday 10th February, Khalsa Aid volunteers from Bedford, Walsall, Birmingham and Leicester, who recently returned from working in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan, joined Chief Executive Ravi Singh to support the residents of Burrowbridge. The team also rescued animals including Alijanon, a 10-year-old tortoise, who weighed five stones and is expected to live to over 100 years. Ravinder Singh, from Khalsa

Aid, said: “Our volunteers are humbled by the immense support and messages of appreciation. Thank you so much for your love. “It is important that people listen to what the experts are saying and follow guidance. Anelka defended the sign as being “anti-system” and “just a special dedication to my comedian friend Dieudonne”. What rather dents Anelka’s defence is that the said Dieudonne has previously been found guilty of making anti-Semitic speeches in France. The FA investigation included the appointment of an expert to interpret the ‘quenelle’ gesture. His findings alongside the requisite FA disciplinary procedure returned a charge of misconduct which carried with it a 5 game suspension penalty. The two high profile incidents involving John Terry and Anton Ferdinand and Luis Suarez and Patrick Evra where allegations of racist remarks made by Terry and Suarez prompted the FA to add specific regulations to the 2013-14 regulatory provisions. The Anelka episode has been the first instance that the FA has utilised the redrafted regulations. Anelka was charged with Misconduct under Section E of the FA Rules of Association. Paragraph E3(1) under terms of General Behaviour stipulates a player must not:“act in a manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent

Curve’ ‘The opens in Bradford New lady’s gym launches at historic Mannigham site One of Bradford’s historic Victorian buildings finally completed its transformation into a state-of-the-art fitness facility last weekend as ‘The Curve’ officially opened in Manningham. Based at the former site of Manningham Baths, the new lady’s gym opened its doors on Saturday where the local public and guests were invited to come down and have a look around the refurbished site. As a protected building, the gym had to be designed around many of the building’s original features to coincide with the specification issued by conservationists and Bradford Council. Mixing the latest modern equipment with many of the bath’s original features enabled the re-launch of the building which has already gathered recognition for its innovative design. Amongst the guests on the launch day was the Bradford Lord Mayor, Cllr Khadim Hussain, who performed a special ribbon cutting before being given a guided tour around the gym. Speaking about the site, the Lord Mayor praised the design and hoped it would provide a

much needed facility for women of the city. “This place is superb,” he said. “Not only can you still see a lot of the original features but you can see how they have been worked around to allow almost 200 people to come in at any time. “It’s a huge project in terms of investing in the city area like this and it is all about preserving the history and architect here in Manningham as well as being a much needed resource for local women. “In Bradford obesity and diabetes is a big issue anyway so a fitness facility like this one here can only help to tackle some of these issues.” Amongst the facilities available at The Curve are: a reception area, beauty room, hairdressers, spa, gym, studio, spin studio, sauna, steam room, changing facilities, and a café, which all provide a one-stop shop for Bradford’s women. Despite the ‘new-look’, the gym has been designed in such a way that it can be transformed back into a swimming pool upon request. A mezzanine has been erected in the former pool space to take advantage of the area available whilst original stalls and structures still remain, just

with a modern twist. Councillor Arshad Hussain, Chairman of Bradford West Area Committee, was tasked with overlooking much of the project from day one and was delighted to give women a safe place to exercise. He explained: “In places like Manningham, where there is a high Asian population, a lot of the women can become isolated in their home. This place is great

as it offers an exclusive place for women to workout.” Adding: “The character of the building is still here and it is nice to see a building which is 100 years old still standing. It is very symbolic to have these original features still here blending in with the fantastic technology of the latest fitness facilities.” Helen Moore, Club Manager at The Curve, was appointed in her role in December and added her praise to the project She said: “To actually see it transform from the old swimming pool to what it is today is amazing. A rusty Mercedes left gathering dust in a British garage for 30 years has sold for a staggering £445,000 almost seven times its estimate. The Mercedes 600 six-door Landaulet was the car of choice for 20th century despots, with Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot and Idi Amin among notorious owners. This 1971 model is regarded as the 'holy grail' of Mercedes but was previously owned by a Congolese head of state - who clearly didn’t care much for the luxury motor. The highly-regarded vehicle left Africa and spent more than three decades decaying in a UK lock-up, until it was recently auctioned for a staggering sum. The 20ft-long car was offered without reserve with a modest estimate of £60,000 to £100,000 by RM Auctions in Paris, and it soon sparked a bidding war. The anonymous winning bidder paying a total of £442,400 after buyers' premium, but their spending on the car won’t end there. Experts believe a full restoration of the classic car would cost more

than £800,000, due to the rarity of the vehicle. At the top of the range were the 26 special 'Landaulet' models where the rear of the car would open and transform it into the world's ultimate convertible. This made it perfect for parades and the 600 Landaulet became a favourite of some the world's most notorious leaders including Saddam Hussein and Pol Pot. When it was delivered in 1971, it was fitted with a nine-inch Sony TV and Becker Grand Prix radio with eight speakers. It also had the comfort of optional armrests, the security of seatbelts, and the privacy of curtained windows. The Mercedes is powered by a whopping 6.3-litre V8 engine which develops 245bhp. This accelerates the 20-foot long limousine from 0-60mph in around ten seconds and top speed of more than 125mph. The classic Mercedes 600, in its various editions, remains popular today with the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and Jay Kay among well-

known owners. Stuart Haynes, service director at Mercedes specialist John Haynes Auto Technics, believes the £450,000 paid for the car could be a good investment. He said: “It was the car of the moment, anyone who was anyone had a Mercedes 600. John Lennon owned one, so did Coco Chanel and many heads of state. “The Mercedes 600 was the best car in the world when it was made and some people still argue it is. It is silent, smooth and quick. The presence shouts style and 'you've made it'. “It is the best of the best and showcased what Mercedes could do. “They are vastly complicated and expensive cars to restore because of the hydraulics involved. “You'd probably be looking at in excess of 1m euros for Mercedes to restore it. They are few and far between. “Fully restored it is a difficult car to value but you are getting a brand new Mercedes 600 and it will probably be a wise investment.”

No UK involvement in Operation Gold Star

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said that there was ‘absolutely no direct involvement’ of the UK government in the planning of the attack by the Indian Army on the Golden Temple in 1984. Cameron issued a personal video message to the UK Sikh community last week whereby he insisted there was no involvement. He said: “There is absolutely no evidence of the UK Government involvement in the operation itself. “This conclusion has been made after a thorough search of some 200 files and over 23,000 documents. I want the dialogue between this government and the Sikh community to continue.” He added: “British Sikhs have made and continue to make a vital contribution to our national life from serving in two world wars to running businesses and playing a massive part in our communities today. I never forget this. I am grateful for it.”

Access denied

Britain is mulling a draconian law that would ban foreigners with HIV and Hepatitis B from living or visiting UK. A bunch of over 20 conservative MPs have tabled a new clause (NC21) to the Immigration Bill which says "the Secretary of State may by order provide that persons who apply for immigration permission must demonstrate that they are not carriers of any of the prescribed pathogens listed Hepatitis B, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and such other pathogens as the secretary may prescribe by order". The move has caused uproar in the UK with MPs being urged by civil society and activists. The NAT (National AIDS Trust) has called on MPs to reject the amendment which would stop people living with HIV being issued visas to come to the UK.

UK economic optimism soars Optimism about Britain's economy has reached its highest level since 1997 thanks to an unexpectedly strong recovery, boosting Prime Minister David Cameron's economic credentials ahead of a 2015 election, a poll showed on Thursday. The poll, by Ipsos Mori, found one in four people trusted Cameron more than other political party leaders to manage the £1.54trillion economy, the sixth largest in the world. By contrast, only 20 percent of

those polled said they trusted Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition Labour party, to look after the economy. On the issue of economic trust, Ipsos Mori said Cameron had increased his lead over Miliband to 22 percentage points from 14 points in May last year. Thursday's poll found half of the 1,012 respondents believed the state of the economy would improve in the next year, while 24 percent thought it would get worse, giving a net economic optimism index score

of +26, the highest since 1997. Britain's economy has staged an unexpectedly strong recovery after a long period of stagnation, with official data last month showing it grew last year at its fastest rate since the 2007 financial crisis. The recovery has been a boom for Britain's two-party coalition government, though Cameron's Conservatives still lag behind Labour by up to seven percentage points in polls of overall voting intentions ahead of a national election in 2015.

‘Insane’ label

A mentally ill man who stabbed a police constable and two worshippers at a mosque was insane at the time of the offences, a jury has ruled. Jurors deliberated over two days before returning verdicts of not guilty by reason of insanity on Mohamoud Elmi, who now faces a potentially indefinite period of detention in a secure hospital. In reaching its verdicts, the jury panel, sitting at Birmingham Crown Court, decided that Elmi did acts which amounted to attempted murder and wounding. A three-day trial was told the 32-yearold had previously been treated for mental health problems but was discharged into the community before the stabbings in Ward End, Birmingham, in June last year. The trial heard how Elmi calmly walked away from a "frenzied" late-night attack on two fellow worshippers at the mosque to pay a visit to a wash-room. Elmi, of Ward End Hall Grove, Washwood Heath, then returned to a prayer area at the mosque before repeatedly stabbing a police constable who attempted to subdue him with a Taser.

Comedian banned following Quenelle gesture A controversial French comedian at the centre of the Nicolas Anelka anti-Semitism row has been banned from entering the UK, the Home Office said. Dieudonne M'bala M'bala previously announced he would visit London to support the West Bromwich Albion footballer, who faces a ban for performing the

comic's "quenelle" salute on the pitch, which is believed by some to be an anti-Semitic gesture. The Football Association (FA) charged Anelka over the pose, struck after scoring against West Ham on 28th December, and he faces a minimum five-match ban if found guilty. Anelka has denied the charge and requested a personal hearing.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that Mr Dieudonne is subject to an exclusion order. “The Home Secretary will seek to exclude an individual from the UK if she considers that there are public policy or public security reasons to do so.”

Scotland approve gay marriage

Scotland voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to allow same-sex marriages, becoming the 17th country to give the green light to gay marriage despite opposition from its main church organisations. The Scottish government, which will hold a referendum on independence from Britain in September, said passing the same-sex marriage bill was an important step for equal rights and paved the way for samesex wedding ceremonies later this year. The move was opposed by the Scottish Catholic Church and the Presbyterian Church of Scotland but the law will not compel religious institutions to hold ceremonies on their premises. The approval, in a vote of 105 to 18 in Scotland's devolved parliament, follows similar legislation passed by the British parliament last year that allows same-sex marriage in England and Wales, with the first weddings to take place from 29th March.

What causes dry, cracked heels? • Cold weather and indoor heating. • Ill-fitting shoes and boots. • Improper daily care of the feet. • Standing on your feet all day. • Since this is such a common problem, here are some tips that may help. 8 tips for dry, cracked heels: Heels will move around in shoes and boots that are too big. This causes friction which forms dry calluse. Make sure your shoes and boots are properly sized so that heels don’t move but toes have wiggle room. Wash feet daily with warm, soapy water. Don’t use hot water because it dries out skin. Hot water is also harmful to diabetics and anyone with impaired circulation to the feet. Exfoliate the feet, especially the heels, while washing. Use a wash cloth, pumice stone, or loofah and rub the skin gently to slough off dead skin. Dry the feet thoroughly. Dry well between the toes since fungus and bacteria like to grow in warm, moist, dark places. Moisturize daily with body lotion. Using a lotion that has urea increases the skin’s ability to hold in moisture. Avoid moisturizer between the toes. Put on cotton socks. Foot soaks are relaxing and helpful if done properly. Limit foot soaks to 10 – 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Soaking for long periods dries out the skin. Use a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar and enough warm, never hot, water to cover the feet up to the ankles. Mild acetic acid in vinegar softens dry skin. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize. Put on clean cotton socks. For an overnight treatment, try the following: massage olive oil mixed with a bit of white vinegar or lemon juice over the feet, concentrating on the heels. Honey is a natural moisturizer so if you want, put some in your mixture. Put on cotton socks. In the morning, wash it off. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize.

Cops hunting yobs who left a PIG’S HEAD on their patrol car Police are hunting sick yobs after a PIG’S HEAD was put on the bonnet of one of their patrol vehicles in a busy city centre. The van was pulled up near Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre while officers dealt with a shoplifter. But they were shocked when they returned and found a severed pig’s head left on the bottom of the

windscreen between the wipers. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police confirmed the force had launched an investigation into the incident – which could be classified as a public order offence or criminal damage. They added: “Police are investigating after the head of a dead pig was placed on a police vehicle in Birmingham City Centre.

“The incident took place as the police vehicle was parked at the Rotunda in New Street. “Officers are actively looking at CCTV images to identify the person responsible.” James Miles, 24, who was out shopping in Birmingham when he spotted the pigs head, said: “We couldn’t believe it when we came out of the Bullring and saw it on the police van. “There was quite a crowd around it taking pictures and most people seemed to think it was pretty funny.”

A motorcyclist in Dewsbury, who was killed after colliding with a van, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal incident, an inquest heard last week. 23-year-old, Kulraj Singh Kalsi, suffered a severe head injury after crashing his 125cc motorbike into the passenger side of a Volkswagen Caddyvan, on Thornhill Road, Dewsbury, in April last year. Mr Kalsi was not wearing a helmet at the time as, because he was a Sikh, it would interfere with his religious beliefs as he would be forced to remove his turban. By law, it is illegal for motorcyclists to travel without a helmet on yet Sikhs are exempt from such ruling to coincide with their beliefs. The Dewsbury resident was thrown from his bike and went

‘airborne’ after the crash, an eyewitness told the inquest. Investigators added that Mr Kalsi may have suffered from obstructed vision due to the wind and drizzle, which would have effected motorcyclists without helmets. “At speed, wind and water in the eyes can blind you and I know to put the visor down,” Det Con Noel Lowden, who investigated the accident, told the inquest: “It’s a surmisation but that could have affected his vision.” Coroner Mary Burke concluded that Mr Kalsi had died as the result of a road accident. It is believed Mr Kalsi, who h a d been

riding close to the kerb, may have attempted to undertake the van resulting in the coming together of the vehicles – or had simply failed to see it ‘slow, indicate or turn into the complex’. Ms Burke added: “There’s no evidence that suggests Kulraj was slowing down as the vehicle was beginning its manoeuvre and it’s not possible to say why he was in the position he was.” M s B u r k e

Suicide bomber ‘could’ be British

Relatives and community leaders say they are praying that a Briton was not behind a suicide bomb attack on a prison in Syria. Abdul Waheed Majeed, 41, is suspected of being responsible for driving a lorry into a jail in Aleppo and detonating a bomb last week. Officials have not confirmed the identity of the bomber amid reports that a UK jihadi, who used the name Abu Suleiman al-Britani, carried out the bombing. Hindu prayer room sought in all UK universities Hindus have asked for a designated “Hindu prayer room” at all the university campuses across Britain. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement, said that UK universities should respond to the requirements of their Hindu students to provide designated prayer-meditation hall for rituals, quiet reflection, festivals and spiritual exercise, which would help in their personal growth. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that it would be a ‘step in the right direction’ in view of presence of a substantial number of Hindu students at UK universities, as it was important to meet the spiritual needs of these students.

Rajan Zed noted that UK universities needed to recognise the intersection of spirituality and education, which was important in Hinduism. A British Muslim convert who told police he wanted to kill Prince Harry was jailed for three years last week after pleading guilty to threatening murder. Ashraf Islam, 31, was told by the judge who sentenced him at Isleworth Crown Court that his plan had been ‘vague and unlikely to succeed’, but he nevertheless posed a danger to the public. Police said Islam, who was born Mark David Townley and changed his name around 2010 after converting to Islam, walked into a police station in Hounslow, West London, and openly confessed to officers his intentions to endanger the life of the 28-year-old member of the Royal Family. Police searched the hotel room, where he had just checked in after flying into London from Thailand, and seized his laptop. They found no weapon. Islam, originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland, had no fixed abode at the time. Media reported that Islam had said he felt he had a ‘moral right to judge’ Prince Harry, a captain in the British army, because he disagreed with the

actions of the military. Prince Harry, grandson to Queen Elizabeth and fourth in line to the throne, has carried out two tours of duty in Afghanistan, the most recent as an attack helicopter pilot. Seven suspicious packages sent to army recruitment offices in England contained ‘viable devices bearing the hallmarks of Northern Ireland terrorism’, a spokeswoman from Prime Minister David Cameron's office said on Thursday. The Irish Republican Army abandoned its armed struggle for an end to British control of Northern Ireland and unification with Ireland in 1998. Under pressure from a small Hindu nationalist group, Penguin India publishing house has pulled all copies of an American scholar's narrative history of Hinduism from sale in India and ordered for them to be destroyed. The group Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti, or the Save Education Movement, had objected to religious historian Wendy Doniger's 2009 book, "The Hindus: An Alternative History" for describing mythological texts as fictional and, thus, hurting "the religious feelings of millions of Hindus," according to a lawsuit filed against Penguin India. A leader of the group filed the lawsuit in 2010 against the Indian publishing house as well as the New York-based arm Penguin Group Inc. This week, Penguin India said that, as part of a case settlement, it was ordering all Indian sales of the book to cease and all copies to be pulped. Bookstores in the capital of New Delhi have been refusing to sell any copies. The action stunned writers and intellectuals in India, with many wondering how one of the world's oldest publishing houses had given in to demands by right-wing nationalists. Some worried it was a sign of growing intolerance of dissent in India, with the country's main Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Narendra Modi, campaigning aggressively for this year's elections. "You have not only caved in, you have humiliated yourself abjectly before a fly-by-night outfit by signing settlement," novelist and rights activist Arundhati Roy wrote in a letter to the publisher printed Thursday in the Times of India. Roy, best known for her Booker-prize winning novel "God of Small Things," is also published by Penguin, though she suggested she may rethink the relationship. "You owe us, your writers an explanation at the very least," she wrote, saying the publisher's decision "affects us all." An editorial in The Hindu

newspaper excoriated Penguin India, saying that in allowing itself "to be browbeaten into submission by a little-known outfit that saw no contradiction in its own sweeping slander of the author... is a comment on the illiberalism incrementally taking India in its sweep." Doniger is not the first author to be silenced by religious or political conservatives in India. In 2011, the state of Gujarat where Modi has held the top office for 12 years banned Joseph Lelyveld's biography on pacifist freedom fighter Mohandas K. Gandhi, after reviews suggested Gandhi had a homosexual relationship. The same year, the Indian government banned visits by American writer and broadcaster David Barsamian, who has said he believes his reports from the disputed region of Kashmir may have irritated officials, though he has never officially been given a reason. India-born writer Salman Rushdie's 1988 book "The Satanic Verses," has been banned in the country, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous. Rushdie was forced to cancel a 2012 appearance at the Jaipur Literary Festival in the northern state of Rajasthan amid protests and threats by prominent Muslim clerics. Doniger, a professor at the University of Chicago, said herself this week she was "angry and disappointed," as well as "deeply troubled by what it foretells for free speech in India in the present, and steadily worsening, political climate." But she defended Penguin India, saying in a statement that the publisher "took this book on knowing that it would stir anger in the Hindutva ranks, and they defended it in the courts for four years, both as a civil and as a criminal suit," until being defeated "by the true villain of this piece — the Indian law that makes it a criminal rather than civil offense to publish a book that offends any Hindu."

The Syrian government reached an agreement with the United Nations on Thursday to secure the evacuation of hundreds of trapped civilians from besieged parts of the central city of Homs, according to Syria's state-run TV. place ‘very soon’. Rebels who have held ancient parts of the city known as Old Homs have been besieged by government forces for more than a year. Deadline Passed Only 11% of chemical weapons removed from Syria

Wednesday the 5th February was supposed to be the date by which Syria finally got rid of all their chemical weapons, yet reports released this week suggest that just over a tenth of the actual amount has gone. 11 per cent was the official figure given by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in regard to the quantity of weapons which have so far been removed from the war-ravished country. After missing the first deadline in December, the February date seemed to simply pass by with the next June date looking ever more

unrealistic. With so many country’s now involved with Syria, the point of blame has often been passed around. Amy Smithson, a chemical weapons expert at the US Monterey Institute, told Reuters she believed that the unrest in the country could be settled sooner if other countries worked together. She said: “The odds of Syrian compliance increase if Washington and Moscow speak with one voice, but that isn't happening at present. “These two countries are both key to the potential success of chemical disarmament in Syria, not to mention a settlement to the overall conflict, so hopefully they will rapidly find a way to resolve

this impasse.” The international community has invested facilities and money into the program yet for many experts not enough is being done by Syrian officials to hurry up the procedure. US Ambassador to the OPCW, Robert Mikulak, demanded immediate action be taken to get the weapons out of the country and believes that the resources are there to get the program moving. “Syria has said that its delay in transporting these chemicals has been caused by 'security concerns' and insisted on additional equipment - armored jackets for shipping containers, electronic countermeasures, and detectors for improvised explosive devices,” he said. “These demands are without merit, and display a ‘bargaining mentality’ rather than a ‘security mentality’.” Georgy Mirsky, a Middle East expert at the Institute of the World Economy and International Relations in Moscow, struggled to defend Russia’s position in the affair, as the country is the biggest supporter of the current regime. He said: “If it appears now that it was all in vain - that chemical weapons will remain in Syria and that Bashar alAssad is pulling a fast one - it will be President Putin who will be in a very bad situation indeed.”

An Indian MP was so convinced that a proposed plan to create a new state in the South Asian country would be detrimental, he used pepper spray in parliament to stop proceedings. In protest to the creation of the new state – Telangana – Member of Parliament, L Rajagopal, took matters into his own hands by unleashing the dangerous chemicals in the lower house of India’s parliament. Mr Rajagopal, of the governing Congress Party, smashed a glass and proceeded to use pepper spray on his colleagues as the Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, attempted to table the bill to create the new state. Members who were in attendance were forced to leave the premises with some being taken to hospital for treatment. Mr Rajagopal has been suspended by the party, alongside several other MPs, after leaving

the official building, alongside fellow personnel who exited coughing and wiping their eyes. The Press Trust of India quoted Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath as saying: “Members tried to use gas in the house... gas the house... I did not see, but I am informed that there was a knife, there was gas, there were other kinds of weapons.” Never before has such an incident occurred directly inside the Parliamentary building and Mr Nath warned that it would only prove to be detrimental for the Congress Party. “The circumstances and incidents which took place in the house are a big blot on our parliamentary democracy,” he added. If the state of Telangana was to be approved it would comprise of 10 of Andhra Pradesh’s 23 districts including the biggest city of Hyderabad, with backers claiming the area has so far been ‘neglected’ by the government. Hyderabad has been at the centre of much of the debate with many protesters arguing that the city’s major information technology and pharmaceutical companies would no longer provide capital to Andhra Pradesh in 10 years after the state creation.

Belgium passes bill allowing euthanasia for children

Parliament in Belgium has passed a bill allowing euthanasia for terminally ill children without any age limit, by 86 votes to 44, with 12 abstentions. When, as expected, the bill is signed by the king, Belgium will become the first country in the world to remove any age limit on the practice. It may be requested by terminally ill children who are in great pain and also have parental consent. Opponents argue children cannot make such a difficult decision. It is 12 years since Belgium legalised euthanasia for adults. In the Netherlands, Belgium's northern neighbour, euthanasia is legal for children over the age of 12, if there is parental consent. Conditions for euthanasia are: Patient must be conscious of their decision; request must be approved by parents and medical team; illness must be terminal and patient must be in great pain with no treatment available to alleviate their distress. Under the Dutch conditions, a patient's request for euthanasia can be fulfilled by a doctor if the request is "voluntary and well-considered" and the patient is suffering unbearably, with no prospect of improvement. One man in the public gallery of Belgium's parliament shouted "murderers" in French when the vote was passed, Reuters news agency reports. Supporters of the legislation argue that in practice the law will affect an extremely small number of children, who would probably be in their teens. The law states a child would have to be terminally ill, face "unbearable physical suffering" and make repeated requests to die - before euthanasia is considered. Parents, doctors and psychiatrists would have to agree before a decision is made. Protesters have lobbied politicians against the changes. Church leaders argued the law is immoral. Some paediatricians have warned vulnerable children could be put at risk and have questioned whether a child can really be expected to make such a difficult choice. Last week 160 Belgian paediatricians signed an open letter against the law, claiming that there was no urgent need for it and that modern medicine is capable of alleviating pain.

India to raise $9.9 billion in telecom spectrum auction India is set to raise about 611.61 billion rupees from the auction of telecommunication spectrum, Telecoms Minister Kapil Sibal said this week, far exceeding the government's target as it tries to narrow its budget deficit. The government's initial target was to raise at least $1.8 billion from the auction. Still the initial revenue would be much lower as companies need pay only a quarter to a third of the winning auction price upfront and the remainder through to 2026. "The government is happy and we will see a smile on the face of the finance minister," Sibal told reporters. Finance Minister P. Chidambaram faces a challenge to meet the budget deficit target for the current fiscal year ending in March amid a shortfall in tax collections and revenue receipts from divestment of stake in state companies. Eight companies, including Bharti Airtel Ltd, Vodafone Group Plc's India unit and Reliance Industries Ltd, had applied to bid in the auction of 900 megahertz and 1800 megahertz band airwaves. After 10 days of the sale, bids in the 900 megahertz band, which is being auctioned in just three cities, totaled about 236 billion rupees, said a government official who declined to be named as the auction results are not public yet. Bids in the 1800 megahertz band were about 377 billion rupees, he said. Details on which companies won airwaves were not immediately available. The stakes are especially high for Vodafone and Bharti which use 900 Mhz, but which will see their rights expire in November unless they buy in the auction. India, which traditionally sold airwaves to run mobile services through a state-selection process, switched to an open auction in 2012 after a scandal over misselling of permits. The government's spectrum auction in November 2012 and March 2013 flopped as most bidders stayed away from the sales, complaining the floor bid prices were too high. Eight bidders applied to participate in the current auction after the government sharply cut auction reserve prices.

65 ‘Dangerous’ prisoners released in Afghanistan RELEASED: 65 of Afghanistan’s ‘dangerous’ detainees were released last week despite opposition to the ruling from the United States

65 former detainees in Afghanistan have been released from prison in the South Asian country despite United States officials labeling them as ‘dangerous’. The men, who were believed to have been connected to the killing of Afghan civilians and coalition forces, were freed on Thursday 13th February. More than two dozen of those were linked to the deaths of 32 US and allied troops and when detained were found with weapons and materials which could then be used to make improvised explosive devices. “The release of these dangerous individuals poses a threat to U.S. coalition and Afghan national security forces as well as the Afghan population,” the U.S. command in Kabul said in a statement. The move comes as current Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai refused to sign a security agreement which would have allowed a residual US force to stay in the country after

the current operation ends at the end of this year. Army Colonel, Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman added his disbelief at the judgement which saw 65 ‘dangeorus’ men walk free. He said: “These are bad men…They've got a lot of blood on their hands; a lot of blood. “This is a step backward for the Afghan justice system. [Releasing the prisoners] is a disservice to Afghan citizens and a disservice to American troops who have fought and sacrificed on their behalf.” Amongst those released was Nek Mohammad. Mohammad coordinated rocket attacks against U.S. and Afghan forces and helped transfer money to alQaeda before being he was captured in May 2013 with artillery shells, mortar rounds and bags of fertilizer. This latest mass release takes the total number of detainees released by the Afghan government to 625.

We caught up with the beautiful Parineeti Chopra about the film and her role. Q: You have experimented with your look in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’. It must be very exciting for you? A: Absolutely, there was a great creative team of talented make-up artists behind us and they have worked so hard to make me look stunning in front of the camera. And I can assure you that when you see the film you will get to know a whole world of madness that’s what the film is all about. There is a big surprise for the audience. Q: How much similarity is there between you in real life and your on-screen character in the film? A: Almost no similarity. I had to do a lot of acting in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’. The only thing I could draw upon was the energy I have in my life and what was required of my character in the film. I had to undergo workshops and it took me about 15-20 days to be absolutely ready before going to the set to shoot. It was quite technical to play this role. Q: You have lost oodles of weight. How did you do that? A: See, I am losing weight because I have become very busy in life. I have to work so hard that I don’t have time to sit at home and eat a lot of food. That is why I am not getting fat. But yes, now I can see that people are commenting that I look better these days. So I want this to continue, as it’s making me feel so lively! Q: Share some beauty tips with us? A: First, sleep well for at least eight hours a day. Drink a lot of water, moisturise your face well, be happy from the inside, eat only home-cooked meals and refrain from anything that could potentially make you unhealthy. Q: Tell us about your co-star Sidharth Malhotra? A: In Sid’s case when he smiles, girl’s ‘phas jati hai’, unlike what happens normally that a girl traps a boy with her smile. For Sid it’s just the opposite, even on set. And he just roams around acting modest.

Where around 65% of Bentley Continental GT buyers would opt for the ‘bigger is better’ mindset and go with the 6.0-litre W12 model rather than the newer, more efficient. But that could change with the arrival of the new V8 S model. The V8 S Bentley Continental GT lifts performance of the 8cylinder car to pretty much the same level of the flagship 12-cylinder version, but adds more sporting intent. Bentley has upped the power of the twin-turbo V8 by 21bhp to 521bhp, so the 0-62mph time drops from 5.0seconds to a W12 matching 4.7 seconds, while top speed rises from 187mph to 191mph. The stats may not seem jaw-droppingly quicker, but it’s the manner in which the S goes about its business that makes this yet another brilliant new

Bentley. As well as the increase in power, torque is up to 680Nm, while the car sits 10mm lower on a chassis tweaked for greater agility, with steering adjusted for greater feel. Visual tweaks are subtle with a black composite front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, gloss black for the grille and a V8 S badge on the front wing. Spending an extra £9000 on the GT gives a worthwhile aural thrill as it delivers a very confident roar under full acceleration that will have you scouring the landscape for tunnels just to hear the noise echo back at you. The standard four-wheel drive provides immense security with huge reserves of grip, while the revised steering is more responsive than ever. This isn’t a car with the reactions of a Porsche 911 Turbo, but certainly is fit for everyday driving with a hint of naughtiness when needs be.

Limited edition Nissan has launched a special version of the New Micra - called the Limited Edition. Based on the midrange Acenta model, the Limited Edition New Micra features a host of visual changes that add an extra layer of style to the recently revised and updated supermini. On the outside, the most obvious change is the contrasting roof. Matched to the door mirror caps, this is available in three colour combinations: Pacific Blue with a White roof/mirror caps, Shiraz Red with a Black roof/mirror caps and Alabaster White with a Red roof/mirror caps. In addition, the Limited Edition New Micra has contrasting side sills and centre caps, a ‘Limited Edition’ badge and a chrome exhaust finisher. On the inside, there’s plenty more detailing to catch the eye; the roof colour is echoed on the air vents and lower part of the gearshift column together with coloured mats. Based on the Acenta trim, the Limited Edition New Micra comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, airconditioning, cruise control, roof spoiler and many more features. On sale now, it is priced from £12,300.

India return to Olympic fold The Indian flag will fly once more in the Olympic Games after the country’s governing body was reinstated last weekend. In 2012, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after it was deemed that the voting procedure had been tainted with officials appointed to the association who had previous corruption charges. However, following a fresh ‘fair’ vote in the weekend, the IOC has immediately reinstated the country to the Games. The new IOA board is led by world squash chief, and Indian national, N Ramachandran, which meets international requirements that no person convicted or facing corruption allegations can be included. Previously, the board’s president had been Abhay Singh Chautala, who was handed the position after running unopposed in December 2012. Mr Chautala had been sentenced to 11 months in jail the previous year for corruption charges before he was released on bail. Former secretary-general, Lalit Bhanot,

was also linked to similar charges. The lift on the ban is the first of its kind to happen during an Olympic Games, with three Indian athletes currently competing in Sochi, Russia. IOC spokesman, Mark Adams, explained what the decision meant for the athletes. “The decision means Indian athletes can compete for their national Olympic

committee. They can walk behind their national flag at the closing ceremony,” he said. “The Indian flag will be raised in the [Sochi Winter Games] village, at a time to be announced.” IOC member Randhir Singh

It is important that sport is run well and tainted officials are kept out in a country of 1.2 billion in which 40 per cent is youth,” he told the Associated Press news agency.

It was my best performance since turning professional and I think that’s just a reflection of the work I’ve been doing with

Oliver Harrison because I’ve been learning so much.” The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist was delighted to begin 2014 in the way he left the previous year and is looking to press on as he builds up his record of wins. “This is going to be a big year for me,” Khan explained. “I want to get my head down, keep learning in the gym and get as many fights under my belt as possible. “The last year I’ve picked up so much since turning professional and I want to keep that up. “I’m going to be very active in 2014 and I have no doubts that it’s going to be a great year for me because I’m eager to learn and improve and I know I have the right trainer and team around me to do that.” Trainer Oliver Harrison was also pleased with how his young prospect performed. “Haroon did very well in there,” he said. “I scored him 8 out of 10 which is very good in my book because I don’t usually give such high ratings. I definitely think it was his best performance since he turned pro and I’m very happy with the progress he keeps on making in the gym. If he keeps learning he can go very far in the sport,” he said. Khan is hoping to fight again in the near future with an announcement due soon.

Pietersen becomes England’s ‘outcast’ signed up in IPL auction

Kevin Pietersen may have felt rejected when he was all but cast out by England selectors yet the big hitting batsman is likely to be feeling better this week after a huge transfer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. KP will represent the Delhi Daredevils in the 2014 campaign after being bought for

£880,000, despite being expected to fetch more at the official auction. With the season set to begin in March, Pietersen will join up with his team for the full campaign as he no longer has international commitments, which had initially seen the Delhi side release him at the end of last season.

The new partnership will see 22-year-old Facu Regalia and Daniel Abt, 21, race on the GP2 grid in the distinctive colours of Force India in the Hilmer Motorsport GP2 car. The development programme expands on the success of Sahara Force India’s reserve driver programme, which has already helped progress several drivers to Formula One race seats. Taking up the sport, simply because his friend wanted somebody to accompany him to training, the 24-yearold has never looked back from his first day and is now predicted a medal finish at the national championships, in Walsall, in April. At 24-years-old he was somewhat of a late starter in the martial arts field yet due to ‘hard-work’ and ‘dedication’ he was selected by the Yorkshire club to be one of their representatives at the prestigious tournament. Trained by Sensei Mumtaz Khan, a fifth degree blackbelt with over 16 years experience, Mohsin has committed his own time, training four times a week, and believes he has a good chance of coming away from the upcoming tournament with a medal. “I am really looking forward to it now because, at the moment, the way things are going, I am predicted a medal which would just be amazing,” he said. “It is the first time my club has taken part in the championships so if I could come back with anything it would be really rewarding. Gold is obviously the ultimate aim and would help give me a big step towards my goal of representing GB on the international stage.” The International Ju-Jitsu Championships are set to be held in Denmark in the autumn and Mohsin

says his target is to be included in the GB squad who will make the trip to Scandinavia. He added: “To think I only started a couple of years ago, and didn’t really contemplate going further than regional’s, an international tournament would just be a dream come true.” If successful in the British Championships, the GB squad is likely to be the next step for the local rising star. Proving that you don’t have to take up Ju-Jitsu in your youth, Mohsin also urges all interested prospective martial artists to get involved. “Ju-Jitsu may not be the most well known or publicised sport in the world but once you get involved, it is certainly one of the most rewarding,” he said. “The main thing it teaches is selfdiscipline so it isn’t a case of who can hit the hardest or who is the biggest, even our smallest competitor could beat the tallest. “I would recommend it to anyone, with clubs always happy to take on beginners at any age. Despite only starting the sport three years ago, Mohsin Hussain has already become one of the top competitors at the Onna JuJitsu club in Bradford.
