“I WOULD DRINK TEN BOTTLES AT A TIME.”

Three months ago, a family from Bradford were left heartbroken as their teenage son was tragically killed in a car crash, turning their lives ‘upside down’.

Now, in memory of their sports-mad relative, Saliq Malik’s family have arranged a special road safety event, in the hope of preventing other families from suffering the same fate as they have.

West Yorkshire’s community champions were thrust into the spotlight last week as the fifth annual Hamara Community Awards were staged in Bradford. With more than 270 people in attendance, the evening of recognition was organised by the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston and deemed a huge success by all in attendance. Habib Khan, speaking on behalf of the Hamara team, said the awards were a great way of paying tribute to some of society’s unsung heroes. “When we held our first Hamara Community Awards, we always had a strategy to try and make it into a big annual event but none of us could have imagined how amazing this ceremony is now,” he said. “It is always a very proud moment for us to be able to congratulate many of the local unsung heroes who don’t get the credit they deserve. “This year’s group of award winners are a great bunch of people. The work they have done has had a big positive impact on the local community.” The 2014 Female Achievement Award was issued to Bethany Hare, who set up her own charity, the Smile Foundation, three years ago when she was just 12-years-old. Raising more than £80,000 for charities and local projects, her first fundraising initiative took place in the summer of 2010 when her rendition of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Smile’, sung for Martin House Children’s Hospice, received international attention. Meanwhile, another teenager to have been awarded on the night

Spreading Christmas Cheer

Children bring gifts and smiles to the elderly By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A team of generous pupils from Bradford’s Iqra Academy were spreading the festive cheer earlier this week as they brought gifts and music to one of the city’s care homes. Pupils from the student’s council headed down to the Britannia Care Home, in Girlington, to present a bounty load of presents, including mugs, sweets and soft toys to the local residents. Christmas carols were also sung before the youngsters got the chance to speak with the elderly residents, and even share in some songs together. Ruby Hussain, who organised the project, explained where the initiative had come from and how proud she was to see the school represented so well.

PROJECT: The idea for the initiative arrived when Lucas Brown (pictured front) handed over a pound to charity

“Within school we had the idea of helping people in the community and although we had already done things like bag packing before, we decided this time to go and visit a nursing home,” she said. “It all began with one of our pupils offering one pound of his own money to buy gifts for others this Christmas. “Since then, the headteacher has been really good and helped bring in funds to purchase the gifts we are handing out today.” Lucas Brown, whose initial one pound donation kick-started the whole project, made the generous offer whilst visiting the Human Relief Foundation. After hearing of other peoples’ plights this winter, the Year 6 pupil said he reached into his pocket and pulled out whatever money he had, saying he wanted to give it to charity. So touched by the gesture, his

coin was framed by the charity and a letter of thanks was sent to him. Mr Arif Khan, learning leader at the school, said: “It was a very proud moment when Lucas offered his own money because nobody had told him to do that. “This whole event has come from that one act and it is helping the pupils learn about what is happening in the wider community, and problems people have to face every day of their lives.” Asma Bi, senior carer at Britannia Care Home, praised the project and thanked those who had come down on the day to hand out gifts and speak with residents. “It really is brilliant having the children here and for them to be interacting with some of the residents,” she said. “Many of these people do not have family, or very few visitors so for them to see the children was really special.”

‘Welcome Home’ Residents return to carnival atmosphere after shock fire

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bollywood dancers and the sound of African drums greeted residents at an extra care housing development in Bradford earlier this week, as a celebration was held to mark the official reopening of the site. Young-at-heart residents from Dove Court, managed by Hanover Housing Association, were joined by enthusiastic staff members as they limbered up at a joint Christmas Carnival-come-welcome home party. In June of this year, an electrical blaze broke out at the Undercliffe development, forcing residents out of their accommodation for months whilst renovation works were carried out. Although the building’s robust fire safety procedures and design stopped the fire from spreading, it suffered significant flood and water damage from the fire services’ attempts to put out the blaze. After months of detailed renovation work, which included the redecoration of all communal areas and replacing lounge furniture, residents then moved back to the estate. Amongst the residents at the celebration event was Mr Isharwal Lal Mistry, who moved back in to to the estate during the second week of October. Suffering from severe visual impairment, Mr Mistry was staying at Shakespeare Court whilst he waited for the refurbishment work to be completed and said it was

‘great to be home’. Extra care housing manager, Jaz Samplay, added: “Despite his visual impairment, Mr Mistry is very independent and so it was important to get him back into Dove Court as soon as possible and back into his routine. “He has been here since August 2007 and this is the home that he knows.” Tom Brown, director of extra care and services, described the day of the blaze and how it was imperative to ensure residents, such as Mr Mistry, returned to the development at the earliest time possible. “The day of the fire, I was in London and it was a couple of minutes after 9am that I got a phone call saying Dove Court is on fire,” Mr Brown said. “I didn’t know to what extent this was at first but it soon became clear that it was serious as I started receiving more phone calls. “Our immediate response was to help re-home residents whilst renovation work is done and with the help of Bradford’s social housing team, everybody was catered for in the best way possible. “It was hard for residents and staff but we made sure we got all the work completed in record time and achieved our goal of bringing residents back home before Christmas.” One group of entertainers who were on hand to help make the celebration have a truly ‘Bollywood-feel’ was the Punjabi Roots Academy. Navraj Gill, acting manager of the group, said the dancers could

More council budget cuts

The Leader of Leeds City Council has warned of ‘grim’ decisions needing to be taken as budget proposals to tackle a further £46.7million reduction in government funding and £76.1m savings overall were released today. The council has already seen its levels of core funding from government reduced by £129m over the last four years, and an estimated further reduction of £74m over the next two financial years will mean by 2017 grant funding for Leeds will have been cut by over 45 per cent overall in less than seven years. The core grant funding reduction for Leeds for next year represents a 14.9 per cent decrease from this year, higher than the national average of 13.1 per cent and continuing the trend which has seen councils in the north hit by larger reductions than those in the south east with the authorities in the Leeds City Region being given a combined £470m less since 2010.

Get in the festive spirit

Visitors to Leeds city centre are being invited to pop down to Leeds Kirkgate Market for a host of Christmas cheer throughout December. To make the run- up to Christmas extra special, Leeds Kirkgate Market is putting on a host of festive treats for all the family, making Christmas shopping not only affordable but fun too. As part of the festive fun Santa himself will be in residence every Saturday before Christmas putting on a number of exciting pop-up performances from the Alive and Kicking Theatre Group. This year they will be performing ‘Santa’s Christmas Crackers’. There is a chance to meet a reallife Rudolph and his reindeer friend as they are also making special visits to the open market every Saturday throughout December, and with live brass bands playing Christmas tunes everyone will be entertained.

Charity market

Traders at Keighley Market are getting into the Christmas spirit by raising money for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. Between Sunday 14th and Sunday 21st December they are holding a tombola in the main entrance of Keighley Market with tickets to be sold at 20 pence each or five for £1. Keighley Market traders have donated all the prizes including a three-foot Mickey Mouse cuddly toy and other cuddly toys, sweets, chocolates, beauty gift sets, vouchers to spend in the market, pet Christmas stocking, miniature auto collectables, gloves and selection boxes. To entertain younger visitors to the market there is also a Winter Wonderland scene with polar bears and penguins. The market will also have extended opening hours over the Christmas period.

Park improvements in full swing

Work is in underway to boost facilities at Centre Vale Park in Todmorden. Todmorden Development Board, which includes Calderdale Council Cabinet Members, Todmorden Town Councillors and local ward Councillors, is committed to maintaining the high quality that has repeatedly earned the park its prestigious Green Flag Award. The Council and the Friends of Centre Vale Park were hoping to submit a bid for ‘Parks for People’ funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help make improvements in the park. However, the Council has been advised that the grants are likely to be directed to other parks in the country which are more in need of improvement. This will not stop the Council from continuing to work with local people and organisations to make Centre Vale a park that the community can be proud of.

Father’s courage after son’s death

Dad ‘determind’ to create road safety awareness after losing 15-year-old in car crash Cover story continued

Saliq was tragically killed when the Volkswagen Golf he was travelling in as a passenger crashed into a parked car, lamppost and brick wall in Barkerend on Friday 12th September. He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he died later that same day. Another 15-year-old passenger also suffered injuries but not life-threatening. Following his passing, the Hanson Academy student’s friends and family decided they wanted to do something to raise awareness of the dangers of reckless driving. This weekend, on Sunday 14th December from 4pm, an event will be staged in Bradford City Park to remember Saliq, with speeches to be given by guests, imams and councillors, before balloons are released into the sky. A song and rap have also been written for the event, with a ‘huge surprise’ set to end the proceedings. Saliq’s father, Amjad Malik, and mother, Uzma Sheikh, explained how the project first began and the important messages they hope to pass on to other young drivers and their families. “When the crash happened, Saliq’s friends wanted to do something in his memory and it was talked about for quite a while before his funeral,” Mrs Sheikh said. “During this time more accidents

happened involving young people and they continued to happen after that as well. Just look at the young people killed in the recent crash on Manningham Lane and the five students in Doncaster.

PLEDGED: Professor Bob Cryan CBE, vice-chancellor at the University of Huddersfield, was impressed by the presentation from Westborough High School’s ‘Ethical Print’ team

Entrepreneurs on the up More investors sign up for stake in ‘Ethical Print’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A team of budding businessmen and women have just sealed their latest deal as they bid to become the champions of this year’s Tycoon in Schools competition.

As reported last week in the Asian Express newspaper, seven students from Westborough High School are currently competing against teams from almost 200 schools across the country in a start-up business project. Pupils from Westborough High School launched their business, ‘Ethical Print’, at the start of the year and are

raising money for five charities, whilst also promoting community events, through a newsletter. Funding is being brought in from local businesses, which pay the team for advertising space, and with a target of £4,500, the team say they are on track to meet the target before deadline next week. Earlier this month, the team signed up their latest businesses during a meeting at the University of Huddersfield. The Year 10 pupils met vicechancellor of the university, Professor Bob Cryan CBE, as well as representatives from the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Santander Bank, plus other local businesses. Presenting their pitch to the invited guests, Ethical Print received a further £1,400 to add to their fundraising tally with pledges coming in from several sources, including Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants. Lukman Patel, the Head of Business and Ethics at

VISIT: Students visited the university to present their business model to investors and raised a further £1,400 through pledges

charges of communicating a bomb hoax, claiming staff at the Paragon Pizza takeaway, in Knaresborough, were posing an ‘immediate threat to members of the public’. Already serving an eight year prison sentence for unrelated drug offences, Islam was handed a further three-and-a-half year jail term for the calls and six months for perverting the course of justice. Shamsul’s brother, Habibul Islam, 22, of Spencer Place, Leeds, was also handed a six month prison sentence for perverting the course of justice and a further six month jail term for fraud. He was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work. On 16th October 2013, Knaresborough’s main high street was temporarily shut down by armed police who detained all staff at the takeaway.

After thorough searches of the establishment and questioning of each staff member, it was deemed that the reported threat was a hoax. Speaking previously to the Asian Express, Paragon Pizza owner, Razaul Karim, said he suffered from mental anxiety following the incident. Describing the event, he said: “When I pulled into Knaresborough, the High Street had been cordoned off and before I knew it there were armed officers pointing their guns at me shouting ‘keep your hands on the wheel’. “They handcuffed me in my car and told me my business was being searched because they had reports saying we had ‘ammunition’ and ‘gun powder’ on our premises. I was terrified.” The Recorder of York, Judge

He also said that the steps taken by North Yorkshire Police to protect the public were impressive. Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, of North Yorkshire Police's Major Crime Unit, added: “These bomb threats, which as it transpired were hoaxes, required a rapid and dynamic deployment of a large number of local and specialist police resources to deal with what was, based on the information available at that time, a credible threat and danger to the public. “The threat inevitably resulted in concerns, anxiety and considerable disruption to the local communities as roads were closed off and crime scenes cordoned off.

One million reasons to volunteer

Nearly £1 million is about to be awarded to voluntary and community groups to support work with the sector, to reduce crime and help boost local arts and culture. This is after almost 30 organisations bid for grants from Calderdale Council in its latest round of funding applications. It was an extremely competitive process with eligible applications for grants alone totalling £1.9 million for the available funding, which will be spread over three years. On Monday 15th December Cabinet will confirm which organisations will receive funding from April 2015. By awarding these grants the Council is aiming to encourage more people to volunteer and get involved in community events and activities, particularly by helping some of the most vulnerable residents to play an active part in their community, support Calderdale’s amazing arts and culture scene, and help make local towns and neighbourhoods safe, pleasant and welcoming places.

Don’t be bitten by loan sharks

Loan sharks are illegal lenders who often target low income individuals and families or people with no access to affordable credit. Kirklees financial inclusion team were out and about in Huddersfield and Dewsbury on the 10th and 11th December giving advice and trying to stop resident from getting bitten by loan sharks this Christmas. Amongst the attractions during the days, Trading Standards did a ‘drop a brand’ taste test challenge, community volunteers showed people how to make cheap homemade gifts such as chocolate truffles, and even Sid the Shark mascot brought down chocolate coins for children.

Winter reading challenge

The successful Summer Reading Challenge – which encouraged young people to read books over the holidays – has been given a winter boost and returns this month. The idea of the Christmas mini challenge is for children aged four to 11 to read any three library books between 12th December and 6th January, registering their achievement on the website, and receiving a virtual badge and a secret video as a reward. They then log into the reading challenge website www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk and list their books to claim their reward. Across Yorkshire, 30,808 children completed the summer reading challenge.

Funeral of ‘spiked drink’ victim TRAGIC: Jane Khalaf died in a German hospital after her drink is believed to have been spiked whilst at a carnival

Family still wanting answers after daughter’s death

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The funeral of a student from Yorkshire, who collapsed and died after her drink was allegedly laced with a deadly concoction of drugs whilst at a carnival in Germany, has taken place this week. Family and friends of Jane Khalaf gathered at Stirley Hill Cemetery on Monday 8th December, with some travelling hundreds of miles to attend an emotional farewell to the local teenager. The 19-year-old, from Huddersfield, was taken to St Marien Hospital in Cologne last month after telling friends she thought her drink had been spiked and it was there that the Northumbria University student collapsed. Her conditioned worsened and she was put on a life-support machine after being transferred to the Kliniken der Stadt Koln on 12th November, before sadly passing away eight days later. Jane’s distraught parents, who own a restaurant in Huddersfield,

say they are furious at the way they were treated by German authorities, who did not alert them of their daughter’s condition. “The way we were treated and the way her case has been dealt with in Germany was appalling,” Rojin Khalaf, Jane’s mother, said. “No one rang to tell us that she had been taken ill in hospital despite the fact she had her driving licence on her as ID. We found out through Facebook. “She was a very sensible girl and very anti drugs so we are confident that her drink was spiked. “A horrendous experience has been made so much worse by the frustration they've caused us and we just want answers. It's terrible and we can't believe what has happened. “When we found out how serious the situation was we just hoped for a miracle. But it didn't happen.” Mrs Khalaf added: “She was such an intelligent, ambitious, funny and happy person who was

so full of life and hoped to become involved in politics and was good at everything. “But really there are no words that can properly describe her.” Tests on Jane’s blood in Germany found levels of amphetamine and ecstasy whilst her body has now been flown back to the UK where Home Office pathologists will carry out further tests. A Northumbria University spokesperson passed on their condolences to the family. “We can confirm that one of our students has tragically passed away

while studying at a partner university in Germany,” a statement read. “Representatives from Northumbria University have met with the family and we continue to offer support at this difficult time. “We are in contact with the authorities in Germany and the UK, and stand ready to assist further where we can.” Jane, who had a Kurdish background, was well-known for being a campaigner for the rights of the Kurds, and had spoken at a rally at St George’s Square in Huddersfield in the summer.

The Diana Awards are the only charity allowed to bear the name of Diana, Princess of Wales, and rewards those who have made a real difference in their community. Amongst the award winners this year was Mohammed Usman, from Bradford, who received the accolade for his work in fundraising for women in Kenya. By selling Rafiki Friend Chains at his school, he managed to raise vital funds which will help change the lives of those less fortunate in Africa. Also rewarded were members of the Leeds Youth Council, who

have been helping to improve the future for young people in Leeds by producing information packs for schools covering careers advice, disability awareness and road safety. Over the past 24 months, more than 1,500 hours of their time has been donated to the cause on a voluntary basis. Elsewhere, another group of inspirational young people, this time from St Mary’s Menston Catholic Voluntary Academy, also picked up Diana Awards. The pupils have helped develop 20 young sport and literacy leaders in a poor community in South Africa as well as volunteering at an Aids orphanage and raising money to fund schooling for 40 orphans.

Will you rhyme this time?

Bradford Libraries are challenging children under fiveyears-old to take up the Rhyme Challenge again this year, following its huge success in the past. Toddler groups, pre-schools, nurseries and children's centres are kicking off the challenge which involved parents and children learning five rhymes together. The aim is for up to 4,000 children from Bradford to have taken part in the challenge once it is completed in March next year. The challenge will also take place in libraries in the New Year and for parents wanting to take part, they can contact Bradford Libraries Early Years Development Officer on 01274 433684 to find out how to get involved.

Farm takeover

A popular Leeds farm was ‘taken over’ for a day earlier this week as youngsters from two primary schools in the city got hands on practice int he working world. Pupils from Rawdon St Peter’s C of E Primary and Bramley St Peter’s C of E Primary were given the chance to take on a number of different roles at Home Farm, which, located on the historic Temple Newsam estate, is home to over 400 sheep, cattle, pigs, poultry and goats. As part of the day which formed part of Leeds City Council’s takeover month, the children worked as secretaries in the farm’s busy office, assisted the gardening team in replacing summer bedding plants, and as Education Visitor Assistants (E.V.A’s), learned how to get to grips with some of the smaller animals.

Learn English in Leeds A new online service to help people learn English as they settle in to life in Leeds was officially launched in the city last week, with the Lord Mayor on hand for a special digital ribbon cutting ceremony. The Learning English in Leeds (LEL) website is designed to give providers and learners information about finding the right classes to help with key language skills. Also aiming to help residents build up relationships locally, the site gives people in established communities who want to improve their English more opportunities to learn. The launch event, hosted by Leeds City Council at the Civic Hall, was attended by learners from the council, The University of Leeds, Leeds City College and Leeds Language College. Those attending the launch saw a demonstration of the new site, took part in a quiz, and got the chance to talk to other learners about their experiences of learning English as a second language. The Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor David Congreve was then joined by some future service users as he performed a digital ribbon cutting to officially launch the new site. Councillor Ghulam Hussain, Leeds City Council’s lead member for communities, who also attended, said: “This new site will be a massive boost for people who have come to live and work in Leeds and

who want to access appropriate English classes. “By giving people a modern, easy-to-use way of finding out how to pick up key language skills, we can empower them to find the support they need, help them to better integrate into their communities and boost their chances of gaining new employment and learning.” The new site has been co-

ordinated by the LEL Steering Group, which includes the council and local learning providers. As well as helping people to improve their language skills, it will also help reduce the reliance on interpreting services and give a single point of contact for those wanting to take part. Dr James Simpson from the University of Leeds, who chairs the partnership steering group, added

that the co-ordination of English language provision for new arrivals across Leeds is ‘crucial’. “Without it, there is no overall picture of what is available or how to find an appropriate English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class,” he said. “The LEL site provides that single point of contact, for learners, those who advise them, and ESOL providers.”

Popular festival returns, bringing international communities together By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

One of the most highly anticipated and welcomed international events at a West Yorkshire University finally arrived back on campus last month to the delight of thousands of students. The twice-yearly, International Food and Culture Festival, hosted by the University’s international student societies and sponsored by the International Office, showcased the cultural diversity of the University’s student body. The University currently welcomes over 3,000 international students, from approximately 125 countries, and such a

large number brings an international dimension to the university as well as the town. To showcase their different backgrounds, around 35 international societies celebrated their food and culture by presenting guests with samples of their national dishes. The cuisine on offer included culinary fare from France, Malaysia, Cameroon, Iraq, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Libya and the Czech Republic, to name but a few. The food on offer was complemented by a range of performances from the students of national dance, musical instruments, traditional games and singing – “where else would you see Vietnamese robotics, Egyptian beat-boxing, Zorba dancing, Russian rock and a Pakistani cover version of the Oasis’ hit Wonderwall?” commented one of the organisers. “The event has become a major part of the University’s events calendar,” said Festival Co-ordinator and University International Marketing and Events Officer Alan Tobi. “I am always overwhelmed at the passion, commitment and effort the students put into this Festival and it’s a great opportunity for our students to make new friends and learn a little more about different cultures. “It was a magical experience

for everyone who came along, particularly the many UK students who attended as well.” The University of Huddersfield challenges itself in becoming an ‘outstanding international university’ and the day-long Festival, open to students and staff from all

subjects, showcases the international flavour of the student community. British Advertising and Marketing Communications student, Jamie Priestley, was one of the many people who attended the event and said it was a ‘fantastic cultural exchange

Sadly Ume’s parents were unable to fly over from Pakistan to share in her special day, yet determined not to miss seeing their daughter graduate, they were delighted to see Ume graduate via live internet streaming. KAL and the Council are hoping to build the additional space covering the health and fitness provision currently available on the Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre site. The modular build units for studio and fitness use could be in place quickly, with the preference being for it to open before Whitcliffe Mount current provision is closed. Councillors and officers would then look at provision as a whole – meeting the needs of present customers, KAL and individuals – to look at provision that is not included in the new centre taking into account what will be provided in the new Whitcliffe Sports Hall and what is available elsewhere.

Become a dementia friend

Kirklees Council are asking local people to be more dementia friendly to support Public Health England and the Alzheimer’s Society who are aiming to get a million Dementia Friends in the UK by 2015 – and they’re currently just over half way there. There are nearly 600,000 Dementia Friends in the UK and 1,200 of those are in Kirklees. People can become a Dementia friend by learning about dementia and how to give support to those with the condition – either by watching a short video online www.dementiafriends.org.uk or attending a free local Dementia Friends Session. They can then use their know-how to help people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

Tackling domestic violence

A £335,000 funding boost will support further work to tackle domestic abuse in Calderdale and help victims and their families. The Council teamed up with the Police, Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group and Pennine Housing to submit a bid for funding from the government’s Transformation Challenge Award, designed to support innovation and new approaches to public services. This successful outcome comes just days after marking national White Ribbon Day – on 25th November, which aims to tackle domestic abuse and encourage men to act as positive role models. The money will be used to improve local domestic abuse services, including identifying potential issues and supporting people as quickly as possible; working more closely as partner organisations; and developing a perpetrator programme to help reduce re-offending.

Charity wants all children to aim for university

Everyone can get ‘IntoUniversity’

ASPIRATIONS: Lessons are currently held afterschool at St Aidan’s Community Hall, (l-r) Nufail Shiraz, from St Peter’s C of E Primary School; Rosie Kenwood, the centre’s team leader; and Faheem ahmed, from Bankside Primary

The University of Leeds has joined up with a national charity in the hope of giving every young person the chance to experience what university is really like. IntoUniversity has established the Leeds East Centre in Harehills where children from the age of seven up to sixth formers are able to receive special sessions aimed at improving aspirations and delivering academic support. Despite the official launch not set to take place until February 2015, dozens of families have already signed up to the service with children benefiting from the afterschool classes. Six schools in the city have also signed up to receive support from the charity, whether that is through class visits to universities or IntoUniversity staff coming into schools to discuss future

goals and current studies. The IntoUniversity charity has been established for more than a decade and already runs similar centres elsewhere, including in London, Brighton and Bristol yet the Leeds site is the first of its kind in the North of England. A second site is hoped to open in South Leeds in 2015, again operating for pupils in areas of deprivation and with lower attainment levels. It is IntoUniversity’s main objective to ensure every child has the opportunity to attend university regardless of their backgrounds. In Leeds, just 12 per cent of young people who receive free school meals currently progress to higher education. IntoUniversity centres are proven to succeed with 71 per cent of young people involved in the programme progressing to higher education. Rosie Kenwood, the centre’s team leader, said it was vital for all children to know they have the option of pursuing higher education. “I don’t want any young person

LEARNING: Primary co-ordinator, Sheri Lawal, helps Bankside Primary School’s Yaseen Arrfat with his homework at the afterschool club

to write off going to university,” she said. “I understand that not everyone will go but it has to be an option open to all and that is what we are trying to tell children through IntoUniversity. “Through this charity, children, from primary school upwards, will have the chance of visiting universities to learn more about the environment and the chances in front of them. “There will also be personal mentors for some students from next year which will help pupils from as young as primary school age. “Often children who we work with are the first generation of their family to go to university so it is nice to have someone on hand who can offer advice about what to expect.” Children enrolled with the charity currently receive academic support from after school homework clubs, and mentoring schemes. IntoUniversity had hoped that in the first year, 400 young people from primary and secondary schools in East Leeds would be interested in signing up. It had 900 students as a target for its third year, but that number is already being quickly closed in on now.

50 years of Sweet Centre Restaurant

Iconic Bradford eatery to celebrate huge milestone Over the past 50 years, Bradford has seen some monumental changes, yet one thing that remains as popular today, as the day it was founded, is Manningham’s world renowned Sweet Centre and Restaurant. It was on Saturday 12th December 1964 that the famous establishment first opened its doors to the public, bringing Asian sweets and Asian cuisine to Yorkshire for the very first time. With Pakistani and Indian migrants arriving in Bradford to work in the city’s mills, a new market was being developed with no dining establishment catering for foods from the South Asian continent. So, when brothers, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Bashir, first coined the idea of setting up an eatery to serve the rising Asian population, the concept of the Sweet Centre Cafe and Restaurant was born. Pulling together all their savings, the siblings set up the business at 110 Lumb Lane in the mid-60s, and with three generations of the same family now managing operations at the site, it has remained a much-loved eatery for people from all backgrounds. As the business continued to thrive in early years, the Sweet Centre became a household name. Despite being replicated by many other food outlets throughout the country, they maintain that they are the original. Younger brother, Abdul Aziz joined the business in the mid-70s and helped to continue the restaurant and cafe’s growth through the continuous production of Asian snacks, sweets and confectionaries, handmade by specialist chefs from India and Pakistan. Over the next 40 years, the Sweet Centre received visits from Pakistani and Indian dignitaries, from politicians to religious figureheads and artists to famous film stars, yet it remains the local public who have helped establish it as one of the city’s most treasured establishments. Mr Bashir and Mr Rehman’s legacy continues today through the original Sweet Centre, whilst second generation sons have helped grow the name across Britain with seven catering outlets now set up across the nation. Even the grandson of the founders is heavily involved with the business, currently managing the original Sweet Centre Cafe and Restaurant alongside his father, Dr Z.Ali. Later this week, the world-famous business will be celebrating its 50th year of existence and with the site proving as popular today as it has over the last half-century, there is no doubt that another 50 years are just around the corner.

Turning her life around From Syrian refugee to award-winning cheese maker

As the UK continues to fall in love with food delicacies from around the world, one Syrian refugee has made it her goal to bring halloumi cheese to the tables of Britain and guess what... she’s winning. Arriving in the UK just two years ago,

SUCCESS: Razan Alsous set up her own cheese business earlier this year and won a World Cheese Award for her halloumi produce

Razan Alsous - a determind mum-ofthree, set up her own Kirklees-based cheese factory. The 31-year-old has a background in microbiology and upon moving to Huddersfield, decided to try her hand at running her own business with a Syrian favourite at the heart of operations. “Halloumi is a product which is very popular back in Syria and we eat it every morning for breakfast,” she said. “After conducting some research on the internet, I found that Britain was actually the second biggest consumer of halloumi cheese in the whole of Europe, only Sweden was ahead. “The problem I found was that

quality halloumi cheese was not available in all seasons in the UK market yet there is a demand for the product all year round. “It is becoming a trendy food here and so I decided to try and set up a halloumi cheese business which sourced all ingredients from local suppliers.” Despite only starting production earlier this year, Razan’s halloumi cheese has already proven to be a huge hit with the public and critics alike, as it was awarded a prestigious food award last month. At the BBC Good Food Show in London, more than 2,700 products were nominated for the top honour, and it was Razan’s locally-produced cheeses that were awarded a Bronze accolade in the 2014 World Cheese Awards. Explaining how she always had faith in the local produce, the dedicated mum who is now settled in Linthwaite with her family said: “Before we went down to the ceremony, I was confident in our cheese because we knew that it was a really good product. “It wasn’t until we got there and saw all these different cheeses from around the world that I began to get a bit nervous. There were really big businesses who had huge pieces of cheese with

them and we just had our little box of halloumi. “When I heard that we won the award, it was great and the whole experience of the ceremony confirmed our cheese was one of the best.” Razan added that the success of the business would not have been possible without the support of her husband, Raghid Sandouq, yet there wouldn’t even be a Yorkshire Dama Cheese company, had no backing been made possible by local bodies. With little capital behind her back in 2012, Razan initially approached the job centre for advice about setting up her own business and was soon put in touch with the West Yorkshire Enterprise Agency (WYEA). After drawing up business plans and conducting research, she was placed on the New Enterprise Allowance - a Government scheme which helps those out of work to start their own business.

With the support of a business mentor, she produced a business plan and within 12 months of extensive research, sampling and dozens of recipes, the business was finally born. “My motto is that nothing is impossible, especially when there are people out there who can help you,” she said. “The financial help from the New Enterprise Allowance is small in value but big in opportunity – it gave me the ability to buy the equipment, start my business and turn my dream into reality.”

Bradford MP, David Ward, says he wants to see prison sentences, which are handed out to people whose only crime is the possession of drugs, to be scrapped and replaced with mandatory health treatments. His comments came after a day on patrol last week, whereby Mr Ward spent the day with West Yorkshire Police learning about their work to tackle drug crime, the new motorbike unit and the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in his constituency. Commenting David Ward MP said: “I’m very grateful for West Yorkshire Police and particularly the hard working local officers spending time with me and allowing me to see the good work they do to try and both prevent and prosecute criminal drug activity. “Drug crime is an issue of concern to many in my constituency and I’m pleased that the Police are putting in extra resources to try and tackle organised drug crime. However, there is only so much the Police can do without further help.” Mr Ward began the 10-hour visit with the Organised Crime Unit at West Yorkshire Police to see for himself the work that they do to try and reduce the instances of drugs and organised crime in his Bradford constituency. Following a recent survey conducted by the politician’s office, it showed that many people were very concerned about the prevalence of drug crime particularly within the Bowling and Barkerend, and Little Horton areas of his constituency.

MP wants legislation changes in war against drugs

‘No prison for possession of drugs’ “I believe that it’s now time to take a more evidenced approach to fighting drug crime with major evidence suggesting that tough criminal sentences for drug users make no difference to the rates of drug use,” Mr Ward continued. “It’s time to be brave with our drugs policy and I’m in favour of scrapping prison sentences for people whose only crime is possession of drugs and instead directing them to get health treatment. “The fact is we should spend more time and effort cracking down on the Mr Bigs' and criminal gangs who traffic drugs than users and addicts who should be helped to recover, not put behind bars.” Mr Ward also did a tour of the local area with the Neighbourhood Policing Team to learn about the work they do to engage with local Bradfordians and he also met up with the Bradford ‘Quad Squad’ who are working to reduce the level of anti-social behaviour caused by the riding of dirt bikes and quad bikes in busy neighbourhoods.

100,000 Trees! NATURE: Volunteers have helped plant thousands of trees since the project began two years ago

Green fingered volunteers surpass huge milestone

TEAM: Members of Sheffield’s AMYA group joined forces with the city’s council and local community volunteers in last weekend’s tree planting efforts

Twenty giving volunteers from Sheffield picked up their shovels and put on their gardening gloves last weekend as they helped the nationwide youth group surpass a huge milestone. Under the name, ‘Muslims for Humanity’, the volunteers were joined by representatives from Sheffield City Council and the local community as their 100,000th tree was planted. Similar initiatives were also being held in St Albans, Hartlepool and Derby during the day of action with more than 300 volunteers taking part nationally. As a central part of the group’s faith is to serve the environment through various means, the project was derived as an active way of getting youths involved with nature. Children as young as fiveyears-old have been involved in the project since its inception with parents on hand to also help in voluntary roles. Shahzad Ahmad, an AMYA youth leader, said to reach the 100,000 tree milestone was a huge achievement that would have an ‘enormous’ impact on the environment. Explaining further about the initiative, he said: “Our volunteers have been working hard to plant as many trees as possible. “We are committed to doing our bit to improve the environment and beautify the local communities we live in. “It is a cause close to our hearts because Islam places enormous emphasis on taking care of the environment and particularly on the planting of trees.” Dr Lukman Ahmad, regional co-ordinator for charity, community and welfare programmes, added: “It is particularly important to us that we bring as many young people to these events as possible so that they can gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment.” Meanwhile, other initiatives the group help spearhead include: youth training, homeless feeding, charity events, disaster response, elderly home visits, blood donations, collections on behalf of other UK charities and interfaith dialogues.

Beauty Top Tips

As we all know its that time of the year were we all get a nasty COLD or FLU, and it can really get in the way of our beauty .It leaves us looking run down and the skin looking dull. So here are some home remedies to banish that nasty flu...

Cold Remedy #1: Inhale steam to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a pot of boiling water and breathe through your nose. Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as helpful to ease congestion.

Cold Remedy #2: Blow your nose

often, but do it the proper way. It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. The best way to blow your nose is to press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear it, as when you blow hard, pressure can carry germs back into your ear passages, causing earache.

Cold Remedy #3: Use nasal sprays

or make your own using salt water rinse to irrigate your nose. Saltwater rinsing helps break nasal congestion while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Here's a popular recipe: Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Fill a bulb syringe with this mixture (or use a Neti pot, available at most health foods stores). Lean your head over a basin, and using the bulb syringe, gently squirt the salt water into your nose. Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril. Let it drain. Repeat two to three times, and then treat the other nostril. Hopefully this will help with a fast recovery, and you can get back to your daily beauty regime and looking fabulous

Inspiring scholar preaches ‘love’ before ‘religion’ Around one-thousand people, consisting of both men and women, from all schools of thought, embarked on Bradford City’s Valley Parade Stadium earlier this week to listen to the inspirational words of worldrenowned Islamic scholar, Maulana Tariq Jameel. Returning to the city following a moving sermon and speech at Orissa

Dining back in August, the scholar once again enlightened audiences with his words of love, tolerance and religion on Wednesday 3rd December. The invite-only event welcomed some of the most influential businessmen and women, alongside numerous professionals, who had the chance to listen to the scholar’s powerful speeches on some of the

world’s most pressing issues. Organised by Shakeel Shah, director of Shaks Specialist Cars Ltd and also cousin of Maulana Tariq Jameel, along with his associates, the night was deemed a huge success with an aweinspiring atmosphere. Speaking after the night, Mr Shah said: “To have Maulana Tariq Jameel return to Bradford is something we were really excited about. “The turnout on the night was fantastic with around onethousand people coming to hear the speech from all over the UK and some guests had arrived from Europe. Everyone was taken aback by the powerful messages. “It brought tears to many people’s eyes as the scholar spoke of today’s world and the challenges people have to face elsewhere compared to their lifestyles. “He spoke of the importance of children and parents respecting each other equally.” Mr Shah and his friends, who made this event happen and made it a success, thanked everybody for their attendance and hoped they understood the loved words from Maulana Tariq Jameel. The famous scholar’s speech was often so moving that the

scholar himself was forced to speak through tears as the realisation of his message was felt by all in the room. This latest visit was orchestrated after the Maulana had requested a return to Bradford following the last sermon earlier in the year.

Northone Solicitors ime after time, you hear solicitors advertising their business with a sentence starting something like ‘had an accident that wasn’t your fault...’. However, what happens when the accident was your fault yet your insurance company is refusing to payout? The answer is simple, you turn to Northone Solicitors. With specialist staff able to handle any First Defendant Case, and with a 100 per cent record in such work, you can rest assured that you will not be left alone when using Northone. A First Defendant Case is when a person is involved in an accident and acknowledges it is their fault. However, when it comes to claiming compensation from their insurance provider, that company withdraws indemnity leaving you to pay the third party, involved in the accident, out of your own pocket. This type of situation usually arrives when an insurance provider believes there was something suspicious about the incident (for example, it was intentionally done for fraudulent reasons). It can often result in the driver having to pay-out more than £20,000 without any financial aid, leaving families with a bill that is usually too much to comprehend. This is where Northone Solicitors step in. Their legal team have handled numerous cases of this manner and pride themselves on giving those involved in accidents, a voice which can stand up to insurance providers. Sufar Khan, who became a partner at Northone Solicitors in 2010, specialises in First Defendant Cases. Mrs Khan explained how they work closely with the client to ensure they understand the complexities of the case when legal proceedings have been issued against them. “We are seeing more and more insurers that, for whatever

T

Undefeated in First Defendant Cases reason, are withdrawing indemnity and forcing people to pay costs that they just cannot afford,” Mrs Khan said. “Not many people deal with this area of law but we do because we know that we are good at what we do. Every First

Defendant Case we have handled, we have won.” Operating on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis, there is nothing to lose by contacting Northone Solicitors so pick up the phone today, and get the justice and insurance you deserve.

arlier this year, the Court of Appeal upheld an Injunction granted in the High Court to Fage UK Limited against Chobani UK Limited. The case was in relation to a Passing Off action brought by Fage against Chobani concerning the sale of thick and creamy yoghurt under the phrase “Greek yoghurt” in UK supermarkets. Fage (the UK distributor) sold Greek yoghurt under the brand “Total” and enjoyed a 95% share of the Greek yoghurt market in the UK. All yoghurt sold in the UK by Fage labelled “Greek yoghurt” was strained yoghurt made in Greece. Chobani (an American manufacturer) had sold yoghurt as “Greek yoghurt” in the USA and had entered the UK market with their American-produced “Greek yoghurt” in 2012. Passing Off is a common law remedy concerned with the protection of reputation and goodwill of a business from misrepresentation by a competitor. In order for the Claimant to prove Passing Off, he must: • Establish that in the mind of the public there exists goodwill or reputation connected with the goods or services which the Claimant is providing; • Demonstrate that a misrepresentation has been made to the public which has led them to conclude that other goods or services are the same as those offered by the Claimant; • Establish that the Claimant has suffered damage by reason of the erroneous belief of the public. In the original trial in the High Court in 2013, Chobani argued that consumers took the term “Greek yoghurt” to mean a specific manufacturing process and that they did not necessarily believe that the yoghurt originated from Greece. Fage

disagreed and argued that only yoghurt that had been made in Greece could accurately be described as Greek yoghurt. The Court agreed with Fage and found that Greek yoghurt meant creamy yoghurt made in Greece, the pretence that similarly labelled US yoghurt was the same was wrong and would cause damage to reputation of the genuine article. Moreover, the Court found that a substantial proportion of buyers of the product described as “Greek yoghurt” believed that it came from Greece and it mattered to them that it did. Greek yoghurt had to be made in Greece for it to be worthy of that name as this is what UK consumers understood it to be. It therefore followed that Chobani’s description of their product as “Greek yoghurt” was a misrepresentation of that product. The Court therefore granted Fage a permanent Injunction preventing Chobani from marketing yoghurt in the UK as “Greek yoghurt”. Chobani appealed against the decision. The Court of Appeal dismissed Chobani’s appeal and rejected its argument that its US-produced yoghurt could be sold as “Greek yoghurt”. Consequently, Fage’s permanent injunction to stop Chobani passing off their US-made yoghurt in the UK under the description “Greek yoghurt” remained in place. Chobani applied to the Supreme Court for permission to appeal but that application was turned down on the basis that the Supreme Court felt that there was no arguable point of law to appeal. We at Blacks can advise and assist with any disputes involving intellectual property or any action concerning Passing Off.

The announcement sees a first for the region with Khaadi, a Middle-Eastern fashion and home retailer, announcing Bradford as its flagship store in the North. This follows two successful openings in Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City. Khaadi will be joined by UK leading opticians Vision Express, another first for Bradford City Centre, along with jewellers Goldsmiths and Asian food outlet Yangtze. Murder case

collapsed Four year case dismissed due to ‘no evidence’

Shrien Dewani, the millionaire British businessman who was accused of orchestrating the murder of his new wife on their honeymoon four years ago, has been sensationally cleared by a South African Court of all charges. At Cape Town’s High Court on Monday 8th December, Judge Jeanette Traverso said there was ‘no evidence’ on which to convict the widowed husband. She said that the statements from his three co-conspirators was ‘riddled with inconsistencies’ and that it was impossible to tell ‘where the lies end and the truth begins’. Back in November 2010, Mr Dewani and his wife, Anni, were carjacked whilst in a taxi driving through a Cape township at night. He was allegedly forced from the car at gunpoint, along with the taxi driver, whilst his new wife was found the following day, still in the backseat of the car, with a single bullet to the throat. It was when the taxi driver was questioned that he claimed Mr Dewani arranged his wife’s murder, asking him to find two hitmen in exchange for a total of R15,000 (£900). One of the hit men, and a middle man who put the conspirators in touch with each

other, also gave evidence against him. For more than four years, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority fought for Mr Dewani’s extradition from the UK and said despite the case being dismissed so early, it did not mean the defendant was an ‘innocent man’. “To say we’ve got an innocent man is an unfair statement because he was implicated by three witnesses and we are relying on those witness and the court can only pronounce on those witnesses,” he said. “He didn’t testify. If he did testify and the court believed his version it would be a different story. But we do not know what his version was except what was put to the witnesses.” The family of Anni Dewani said they were ‘deeply disappointed’ following the court ruling and that the lack of answers from the trial would only result in more sleepless nights. Speaking after the case was dismissed, Mrs Dewani's sister, Ami Denborg said: “Today we feel as a family that the justice system has failed us and we are deeply disappointed. “We came here looking for answers and we came here looking for the truth and all we got was more

questions. “We waited patiently for four years to hear what really happened to Anni and to hear the full story of what happened to our dearest little sister. “All we wanted was to hear all the events and the hope of actually finding that out has kept us, as a family, going. Unfortunately we believe that this right has now been taken away from us.” Ms Denborg added: “Today we feel really, really sad, because we never heard the full story of Shrien. We heard that Shrien has led a double life and that Anni knew nothing about it. “And we just wish that Shrien had been honest with us and especially with Anni. “The knowledge of not ever knowing what happened to my dearest little sister on the 13th of November 2010...that's going to haunt me, my family, my brother, my parents, for the rest of our lives. “We've had four years of sleepless nights and ...will we ever be able to sleep?” Mr Dewani is now free to return to the UK and is believed to have flown from South Africa on Tuesday evening.

Police issue apology to Sikh taxi driver over turban burning incident British police have apologised to a Sikh taxi driver for not taking seriously a vicious hate crime last year when a group of drunken women attacked and racially abused him before ripping off his turban and burning it. The attack happened in September 2013 in Bishops Worth when the five drunken women wanted a free cab ride home to Swindon as they did not have enough money. But when asked to leave the cab they refused and attacked the Sikh driver, racially abusing him before ripping off his turban and burning it. When the police were called, they seemed more keen to move the driver on and did not show a willingness to take action such as looking actively for the perpetrators – who were hiding nearby. Only on the insistence of the taxi driver did the officers’ search in the vicinity and with the driver’s support apprehend the culprits. The taxi driver went to the police the following day to get an update but was not satisfied with their response. After months of chasing by the victim and the assistance of an anti-hate charity, they were eventually informed by the officer in charge that he had decided to issue a mere caution to just one of the five offending

women. The other four women who were involved in the attack were never prosecuted or even cautioned. Avon and Somerset police admitted they should have charged the offender rather than hand out a police caution. Weather Bomb

Up to 17,000 residents in the west of Scotland were left without power on Wednesday morning as a ‘weather bomb’ of wet and windy conditions battered parts of Britain with gusts reaching up to 80 miles per hour. Heavy rain and winds hit Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England overnight with an amber wind warning — meaning there was a potential risk to life and property — in places across Scotland's western Isles and northern Shetland Islands. Britain's Met office warned people to expect gales, storm force winds and large waves across several parts of northern and central Britain throughout the day. “The public should be prepared for dangerous conditions, especially along causeways and coastal roads exposed to the west,” it said on its website.

Plane grounded after ‘bang’

A British Airways aircraft landed safely back at London's Heathrow Airport after being forced to return shortly following take-off when residents living below the flight path in southern England reported hearing a loud bang. “The aircraft landed safely back at Heathrow after a technical problem,” British Airways said in a statement. Media reports said householders living in Kent to the southeast of London had heard a bang as the plane flew overheard. The reports said the crew had a problem retracting the undercarriage. British Airways, owned by International Airlines Group, said that the passengers would soon be on another aircraft and on their way to Dubai.

Royals pay respect in the US

Prince William and his wife, Kate, paid a solemn visit on Tuesday to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, greeted by a small but resolute crowd of admirers who withstood driving rain and wind for a glimpse of the royal pair. Kate, the duchess of Cambridge, laid a bouquet of white roses and a handwritten note at one of the two memorial pools marking where the World Trade Center towers once stood. Etched along the pools are names of the nearly 3,000 people killed on 11th September 2001, when two hijacked planes destroyed the twin towers. The note, signed by the couple, read: “In sorrowful memory of those who died on 11th September, and in admiration of the courage shown to rebuild.” The couple, who are expecting their second child in April, are making their first visit to New York City.

Scotland Yard going to Abu Dhabi

New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of London's storied police force and one of the British capital's most famous landmarks, has been sold to an Abu Dhabi investor, paving the way for its macabre but private museum to open to the public elsewhere. The 20-storey block in central London is famous around the globe as the home of the Metropolitan Police Service and for the rotating triangular sign in front of it nicknamed ‘the revolving cheese’ by local wits. The Met, as the service is often called, is as well-known for its role as Britain's leading police force as for its links with famous fictional sleuths such as Sherlock Holmes. The sale, for £370million, is part of a trend that has seen well-known public buildings sold in recent years to tap soaring real estate prices.

Combating terrorism

Calls for clarity on the boundary between dealing with suspects and impinging on basic human rights Labour MEP Afzal Khan, Vice Chair of Security and Defence in the European Parliament, calls for greater protection of basic human rights in the search and interrogation of terror suspects in the UK and abroad. Addressing a conference on the ‘Protection of Human Rights and Counter Terrorism’ held in European Parliament on Tuesday 9th December, Khan called for ‘more clarity on the boundary between combatting terrorism and impinging on basic human rights’ and expressed concerns that particular communities were being targeted in counter-terrorism efforts. The CIA report, disclosed recently, reveals what many have been concerned about for a long time. Citizens are being arrested on arbitrary grounds of suspicion and subjected to means of torture in 'black sites' totally hidden and

unsupervised by any authority' he said. This report comes in conjunction with the news of new ISIS-related activity in Birmingham that threatens the kidnap and murder of a policeman. On this, Khan reiterated: “ISIS is an evil that must be stopped. I have continuously called for our governments to engage the Muslim community better to defeat this self-proclaimed Caliphate and its false narrative. “The theory that non-violent extremism translates into terrorism is untrue. The problem with this claim is that it risks demonising conservative communities.” He warned however that maligning the whole Muslim community in light of terrorist activity will only be counterproductive. “We must be careful not to describe acts of terrorism as inherently linked to a faith or a

faith community. We must not become the dragon whilst trying to fight a dragon,” said Khan. He added: “The human cost of terrorism is felt virtually in every corner of the globe, we need to

work together to be effective, to engage active participation and leadership of civil society, we need global co-operation and collaboration to find and deal with the root causes of terrorism.”

Siblings sentenced after drugs raid

FOUND: West Midlands police found money poorly hidden in a microwave oven at the brother’s bed-sit drug den

Two brothers have been jailed after West Midlands Police found £20,000 in crack cocaine and heroin hidden inside an oven and microwave at their Birmingham drugs den. Astute cops spotted known drugs peddler, Tanveer Riasat, sat in a parked car in Kings Heath High Street on 1st July and, during a search of his car, discovered £1,000 hidden in the glovebox and a set of house keys. Riasat was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and, when officers used the keys to enter a nearby bedsit, they found 100 wraps of cocaine under the sofa, plus more drugs and cash dotted around the kitchen. The 32-year-old tried pinning the blame on a drug

user he’d given a lift to and who ‘must have dropped his keys.’ But his bogus alibi served only to incriminate his brother, Naseeb Riasat, who officers found at the man’s home the following day in Moseley. When officers searched Riasat junior’s car they found keys to the same bed-sit drugs den. Tanveer Riasat, from Ravensdale Road in Small Heath, was found guilty by a unanimous jury of possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply, plus money laundering, and at Birmingham Crown Court on 10th December, was jailed for eight years. Naseeb, 29, admitted the same offences and was handed a prison term of five years four months.

INTERESTING: Local hustings for Harrow East organised by the Muslim Forum of Middlesex generated a lively debate

Harrow Muslims grill General Election candidates Last month, the hotly contested battle for Harrow East began as parliamentary candidates clashed in a bid to secure the vote of some 9,000 Muslims in the area. The incumbent Conservative MP for Harrow East, Bob Blackman was present, alongside Labour prospective parliamentary candidate Uma Kumaran and the prospective Liberal Democrat candidate, Ross Barlow. Channel 4 news reporter, Fatima Manji, chaired and moderated the event. Held at the Shi’a Ithna’ashari Community of Middlesex (SICM) premises in North Harrow, the event was organised by the Muslim Forum of Middlesex (MFM), a diverse coalition of mosques and Islamic associations in Harrow, who packed the hall and quizzed the candidates primarily on local issues. A crucial issue for Harrow residents, the state of Northwick Park Hospital’s A&E department, dominated much of the debate. On health, Blackman acknowledged the long waiting times; from his own personal experience in February 2013, he recalled that he had had to wait from 4pm to 2am to be seen and agreed that “there need to be more beds” and that waiting times were “unacceptable”. However, Kumaran responded by noting that after five years and running up to a General Election, “Bob cannot just say what is wrong”; this constituency, she added “needs someone who would take decisive action”. Local GP registrar Dr Rasha Mezher-Sikafi expressed her frustration on the political approach to healthcare: “What politicians need to realise is that building a shiny new wing at Northwick Park Hospital with no increase in capacity six months before the general election does not fix the underlying problem caused by the closure of other A&E departments within North West London. They

need to listen to doctors who work on the front line and understand the facts.” On education, Blackman acknowledged that the media was vilifying “schools that have a fundamental Muslim ethos – and this is completely wrong.” Kumaran went further, noting that OFSTED “really is unfairly targeting Muslim communities” and Barlow joined in, attacking OFSTED for “not showing the same level of tolerance and respect that they are expecting of schools.” In response to Blackman’s analysis of the problems in education, Anjum Peerbacos, an experienced teacher argued that the recent reforms in education have made things much more difficult for teachers: “We are overworked; Michael Gove’s reforms have taken us back to the 1950s. Fifty percent of teachers want to leave the profession. Unlike the previous government, who listened to the teachers, this type of reform was top down and our concerns were just ignored.” As governor of a local school, Kumaran agreed that she has “seen first-hand the effect that Michael Gove’s disastrous reforms have had” on schools, and Barlow expressed that he wished he “could tell Michael Gove where to go.” One respondent of a feedback survey taken within twenty four hours of the event, highlighted, however, that Blackman had an impressive grasp of statistics and that his “track record in education delivery for Harrow speaks for itself.” The debate came to a head when Blackman accused Kumaran of “lying to this audience” when referring to the £75m cuts required of the Local Council; in a raised voice, he asked whether a Labour government would reverse the cuts. Kumaran, clearly startled by the tone taken, responded: “you can talk to me and not shout at me”,

considering his approach “ridiculous”. The event also generated a passionate discussion on the issue of Palestine. On the one hand Kumaran and Barlow supported the recognition of the state of Palestine. Kumaran expressed that she understood “how important the freedom movement is” and “that recognition and statehood is not a gift to be given but a right to be recognised.” Barlow went further saying that the UK government should threaten to “hold weapons hostage” and not let British weapons be used as a “constant stream of aggression to their neighbours.” However, after Blackman’s unwillingness to acknowledge a state of Palestine at this moment, and a statement that of the approximately 2,000 people killed in Operation Protective Edge, “75% of the people killed in Gaza were men

between the ages of 18 and 30”, there was surprise expressed from the audience. His implication that people could and should be deemed legitimate targets by virtue of their age and gender without further investigation, drew disbelief from the crowd. One member retorted that even if this were factually correct, “this does not make it right to kill them” extra judicially and later expressed that “Blackman really needs to do his research before making such factually incorrect statements that contradict official UN statistics.” In addition to this, the audience found it particularly amusing when he said that his tweets on the issue had been “balanced”. Local resident, Kosar Pedram, asked Blackman why he used social media to retweet views that suggested that Palestinian lives were less valuable than the lives of non Palestinians, and noted afterwards: “It seems like he thinks that the life of a Palestinian is not worth the same as that of others. I am not sure that a person with such views

should represent such a diverse borough.” Following the end of the debate, SICM Executive Committee member and MFM co-ordinator, Miqdaad Versi, emphasised the importance of community organisation in the run-up to the General Elections: “We all need to work together, educate the local residents about the political process, understand their concerns and ensure they are put to the candidates. Only through political participation, engaging the candidates and volunteering to make a difference, can we make our MP be truly representative of the diversity of Harrow”.

Arrests after Garner protests

POPULAR: Mohammed is now the number one baby name in the UK, surpassing 2013’s most favoured choice, Oliver

New name tops 2014 list of baby names With the diversity of Britain’s residents continuing to expand year-on-year, statistics released earlier this week have highlighted the Arabic name of ‘Mohammed’ as the most popular amongst newborn Brits. Knocking 2013’s most popular choice, Oliver, off top spot, Mohammed leaped 27 positions into the most favoured position, above more traditional names such as Jack, in third place respectively. Data carried out by BabyCentre, a parenting website, revealed the latest trends for parents with Sophia rising to first place for girls. Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, explained why

National

MOHAMMED Mohammed was likely to have risen so highly in the standings. “Traditionally Mohammed is often given to the first-born boy in Muslim families,” Ms Redshaw explained. “The increase of other Arabic names in the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today.” As well as the traditional choices in different communities, celebrities are also believed to

influence the choice of names for newborns, with adverse effects also highlighted. In Britain, David and Victoria Beckham’s children have seen their names rise in this year’s standings with Harper entering the top 100 for the first time, whilst Romeo and Cruz have also risen, up 67 per cent and 400 per cent. Television stars, both animated and not, are also causing trends to occur with Elsa, the star of hit

Disney-film ‘Frozen’, entering the charts, as well as names from popular dramas, such as Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black. But Ms Redshaw did warn that ‘bad behaviour’ from certain celebs has seen their names become less popular over the past 12 months. “Parents are wary of names associated with celebrities who exhibit bad behaviour, the controversial pop singer Miley Cyrus being a prime example,” she said. The name Miley has fallen, as have Amy and Nick, following the release of the mystery thriller book and movie Gone Girl.

British police said on Thursday they had arrested 76 people at a protest about the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man killed in New York in a police chokehold, after demonstrators attacked a shopping centre in west London. London's Metropolitan Police said a small group had broken away from the main protest, a ‘die-in for Eric Garner’ on Wednesday night, and tried to break into the Westfield shopping centre, one of Europe's largest inner city malls. They clashed with security staff and damaged property, leading to 76 arrests for public disorder offences. “We will always work with those that wish to demonstrate lawfully - as the majority of protestor did yesterday,” said Chief Superintendent Mark Bird who led the policing operation. “However, we will not tolerate the small minority that offer violence or commit other criminal acts, such as that witnessed outside Westfield yesterday evening.” Asian

UKIP harassment investigation

A prominent female member of Britain's anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) has accused its general secretary of sexual harassment five months before a national election, prompting the party to suspend him pending an investigation. The situation is the latest in a series of scandals to have hit the party which has poached two MPs from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives and is threatening to siphon off his voters at an election next May, partly by tapping into public angst about immigration levels. Roger Bird, the suspended official, denies sexual harassment or that any romantic overtures to his accuser, Natasha Bolter, were related to the party's decision to choose her as a potential parliamentary candidate for a seat in southern England. Bolter detailed her allegations in The Times newspaper, saying Bird had propositioned her twice and had suggested he could advance her career in return. Asian

In memory of Khuram New suite honours former much-loved student The University of Salford has paid tribute to one of its former students, tragically murdered whilst holidaying in Sri Lanka in 2011, by naming a new clinic suite after him. Khuram Shaikh was a wellrespected alumnus of the University and, following his graduation, became an aid worker with the Red Cross and other international development organisations. Helping people in some of the world’s most deprived areas, he used his expertise in prosthetics in places such as the Gaza Strip. On Christmas Day 2011 Khuram was murdered while on holiday in Sri Lanka with his girlfriend, who was also viciously attacked. The horrific crime became the focus of international attention through the campaigning work of Khuram’s family, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the culprits were brought to justice. The family’s campaign led to Prince Charles and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, raising the issue with the Sri Lankan authorities and earlier this year four men were jailed for Khuram’s murder and attacks against his girlfriend. The proposal to name the clinic

after Khuram was supported widely by students and staff in Khuram’s former department and across the School of Health Sciences. Speaking at the launch of the new Khuram Shaikh Clinic Suite, Professor Sue Braid, Head of the School of Health Sciences, said: “The entire University community was shocked by the brutal murder of Khuram. Since Khuram’s death we have sought to support the

family’s fight for justice and have been inspired by their strength and determination in what has been the most difficult of times. “Khuram dedicated his life to helping people in the most deprived parts of the world, using the skills he learned here in Salford to fit prosthetic limbs to people affected by conflict. This work gave so many people a new lease of life. “This new clinic, named in

Khuram’s memory, will give future students the skills to continue his legacy and is a fitting tribute to a much missed University alumnus.” Rochdale’s Member of Parliament, Simon Danczuk, who has campaigned alongside the family to bring Khuram’s killers to justice, added: “I’m really pleased that the University of Salford is remembering Khuram in this way. “I think it is great to have an occasion like this where we celebrate Khuram’s life and the contribution that he was making. That’s what he lived for, to help others.”

Malala, Satyarthi receive their Nobel Prizes

Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for refusing to quit school, and Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi received their Nobel Peace Prizes on Wednesday 10th December after two days of celebrations, honoring their work for children's rights. Malala became by far the youngest laureate, widely praised for her global campaigning since she was shot in the head on her school bus in 2012. Some groups in Pakistan,

however, have accused her of being a puppet of the West and violating the tenets of conservative Islam. "I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not," said Malala, 17, better known by her first name, which is also the title of her book and the name of her foundation. "It is the story of many girls," she said in Oslo's ornate city hall on the anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's death. Although the focus was undoubtedly on Oslo on Wednesday, Nobel Prize winners in literature, chemistry, physics, medicine and economics were gathering in Stockholm, due to receive their prizes from the King of Sweden later in the day. Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labor sometimes in violent confrontations, kept a modest profile in Oslo and even conceded to being overshadowed by Malala surrounded by admirers.

"I've lost two of my colleagues," Satyarthi said about his work. "Carrying the dead body of a colleague who is fighting for the protection of children is something I'll never forget, even as I sit here to receive the Nobel Peace Prize." Arriving in Norway with friends and young activists from Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria, Malala met thousands of children, walked the streets to greet supporters and will open an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. The award could also help the Norwegian Nobel Committee repair its reputation, damaged by controversial awards in recent years to the European Union and U.S. President Barack Obama. "I am pretty certain that I am also the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who still fights with her younger brothers," Malala said. "I want there to be peace everywhere, but my brothers and I are still working on that."

Hostage shot dead as rescue mission fails KILLED: Luke Somers had appeared via a video online last week saying his ‘life was in danger’ and was shot dead the following weekend after a failed rescue operation

‘Barbaric’ killing of photojournalist slammed by President and family

Just days after an al-Qaida spokesperson warned that hostage, Luke Somers, would face his ‘inevitable fate’, the British born US photojournalist was killed following a failed rescue mission. The 33-year-old had been held captive by the Yemen branch of the extremist group for over a year and was seen for the first time since his abduction when a video was posted online by his captors. Local commander of the group, Nasser al-Ansi had said that US officials had three days to meet their unspecified demands and suggested Somers would be killed if not. He was shot by his captors on Saturday 6th December after US Special Forces attempted to extract him, and fellow hostage, South African teacher Pierre Korkie, from their location. Despite being held by the Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAB) group for a prolonged period of time, Somers appeared to be in good health when he was first seen via video last week. His stepmother, Penny Bearman, and half-sister, Lucy Somers, indicated that they still had hoped that because previous threats had

not been carried out, his life may be spared and said they were disappointed to hear of his death following the botched rescue. Bearman, 55, of Deal, Kent, told the Times the family were ‘quite angry because if there had not been a rescue attempt he would still be alive’. “We are sure Luke would have given support to the ongoing discussions [to secure his release] in Yemen rather than the conflict approach,” she said. “There had been threats before that had not been carried out.” She added the release of the video had ‘led to things escalating horribly’ and the family had been ‘kept in the dark’ about the effort, as well as a previous attempt last month. Somers indicated that she had first heard of her sibling’s death from FBI agents. President Barack Obama described Mr Somers' murder as ‘barbaric’ in a statement reported by NBC News. “The United States strongly condemns the barbaric murder of Luke Somers at the hands of al-Qaida terrorists during a rescue operation conducted by US forces in Yemen in partnership with the Yemeni government. “On behalf of the American people, I offer my deepest condolences to Luke's family and to his loved ones.” Luke Somers was kidnapped in September 2013 in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa while working as a photojournalist. His death follows similar killings by another extremist group Islamic State (IS), who released online videos of the separate murders of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, US aid worker Peter Kassig and two British aid workers, David Haines and Alan Henning.

Exhibition examines devastating tragedies

AFFECTED: This image, taken by Raghu Rai entitled ‘Widows’ Colony’ shows some of the victims of the 1984 Bhopal disaster

Reframing Disaster This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster in India, the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide and the 10th anniversary of the South Asian tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. ‘Reframing Disaster’ is a major project based in Leeds that seeks to consider, commemorate and support recovery for these and other global disasters throughout the start of December. It is part of the University of Leeds’ postcolonial disaster project headed by Dr Anthony Carrigan, Lecturer in Postcolonial Literatures and Cultures at the University’s School of English. He said: “At a time when the number of global disasters is

rising rapidly, it’s vital we consider both the historical legacies of large-scale catastrophes and why disasters continue to hit communities across the world so hard. “Reframing Disaster looks beyond statistics towards the profound physical, emotional, and physical fallout from disasters as communicated across art, literature and the media. “What can they tell us about how long a disaster lasts? How do communities recover from environmental devastation? And what might be done to support survivors, to campaign for justice and prevent future disasters?” A free photographic exhibition opened earlier this week at The Tetley and runs

until 7th December. Featuring work by the world-renowned Magnum photographer, Raghu Rai, who was the first to document the Bhopal disaster, a number of unique images are available for public viewing. On the night of 2nd December 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked 27 tons of toxic gases in the central Indian city, causing one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. To date 25,000 have died as a result of exposure to the toxic cloud, and over half a million have suffered from debilitating health problems. The project also includes film screenings, public discussions, schools workshops and a conference.

Attempted suicide NOT a crime

Indian human rights activist, Irom Sharmila, also known as the ‘Iron lady of Manipur’, may soon be released from prison after attempted suicide was removed as a crime punishable by imprisonment in India. For the past 14 years, Sharmila has been protesting against army atrocities in Manipur by staging a hunger strike, and due to the old law, anyone deemed to be attempting to kill themselves is liable for a jail term of one year. The government informed parliament of its decision to overturn this ruling in a written reply from the home ministry on Wednesday 10th December, saying it was acting on a recommendation of the Law Commission. The government panel for legal reform had deemed the suicide law ‘anachronistic’ and ‘undesirable’ in a 2008 report. Sharmila has been held in prison since the start of her fast and is force-fed by tubes several times a

day. The new legislation appears to suggest that she will be free to hold the hunger strike without the intervention of authorities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed India as one of the countries with the highest

suicide rates - 21.1 per 100,000 people in 2012. More than 800,000 people commit suicide every year according to statistics provided by WHO, equating to one every 40 seconds.

FREE: Irom Sharmila could be released from prison and free to stage her hunger strike

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein talks to reporters as she walks to the Senate floor on Capitol Hill, in Washington

“U.S. Senate’s CIA report makes false charges” One of the two psychologists who devised the CIA's harsh Bush-era interrogation methods said on Wednesday 10th December that a scathing U.S. Senate report on the torture of foreign terrorism suspects "took things out of context" and made false accusations. "It's a bunch of hooey," James Mitchell said from his home in Florida when asked for his response to the Senate Intelligence Committee's findings released on Tuesday. "Some of the things are just plain not true." A day after the Senate report was issued, the U.S. Defense Department said it was shutting its detention facility at Bagram and no longer has custody of any prisoners in Afghanistan, closing another controversial chapter of Washington's long fight against Islamic militancy. The United States faces mounting criticism from the United Nations as well as foreign governments that Washington often reprimands for human rights violations. The Senate report concluded

CIA interrogation tactics were ineffective and often too brutal. The CIA paid $80 million to a company run by the two former Air Force psychologists without experience in interrogation or counter-terrorism who recommended waterboarding, slaps to the face and mock burial for prisoners captured after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, according to the Senate investigation.

said amounted to the torture of some CIA detainees. Mitchell declined to specify what he considered wrong in the report, citing a non-disclosure agreement with the government. But he suggested political bias was behind the report, which was put together by the committee's Democratic majority and which he said sought to "smear" those involved in the program. The CIA outsourced more than 80 percent of its interrogation program to the company, Mitchell Jessen & Associates of Spokane, Washington, for its work from 2005 until the termination of the arrangement in 2009.

The United States faces mounting criticism from the United Nations as well as foreign governments that Washington often reprimands for human rights violations Mitchell and his colleague, Bruce Jessen, are referred to in the report by pseudonyms but intelligence sources have identified them by name. Jessen could not be reached for comment. The report accused them of violating professional ethics as architects of a system that committee chair Dianne Feinstein

The American Psychological Association called the details in the report "sickening and reprehensible" and while saying that Jessen and Mitchell were not members and therefore outside the reach of its disciplinary process, it said they should be held "fully accountable" for violations of human rights and laws.

Children HIV positive after blood transfusions Lack of enforced regulation putting children at risk A leading medic in Pakistan is warning that the news of 10 children from the South Asian nation, who tested positive for HIV this week after receiving blood transfusions, could be ‘just the tip of the iceberg’ with many more likely to have contracted the disease. After the news was revealed on Thursday, Pakistan’s already and notoriously fragile underfunded health system was once again brought into the spotlight for further questioning. The children were receiving regular transfusions for the blood disease thalassaemia, according to secretary general of the Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan, Yasmin Rashid. The consortium of charities currently offers transfusions to 22,000 children and it is believed that more than just 10 of these are likely to now be HIV positive. In Pakistan, laws exist which require blood to be screened for diseases, but due to poor

enforcements, it is possible for infected batches to be approved, according to Javed Akram, vice chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. “Most of the professional blood donors are drug abusers,” he said. “I think these cases are probably the tip of the iceberg. It is a scandal.” Many children would require transfusions on a biweekly basis, he said, increasing their exposure to infected blood. He added that he was aware of 16 children receiving transfusions who had tested positive for HIV so far. Rashid said her organisation was told that at least 10 children had tested positive for HIV last week yet did not know how many children had been tested so far. “These children are desperate for blood, they go to multiple centres,” said Rashid. Most blood banks in Pakistan are privately operated and the quality, age and price of blood varies widely.

SAFETY: Blood donated in Pakistan should follow strict laws yet due to poor enforcement it is feared that contaminated batches are often passed as safe

National Theatre opens gripping tale of Mumbai poverty and ambition Kabir and Parveen Bedi

Captivating This month saw the cast and crew of ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’ deliver a captivating performance to a celebritypacked audience. The National Theatre opened its doors to stars of the screen and stage including; James Bond star Kabir Bedi, Eastenders stars Nitin Ganatra, Himesh Patel and Rakhee Thakrar, Seema Pathan of The Wright Stuff, BBC presenters Yasmin Khan and Naga Munchetty and actors Kulvinder Ghir, Shivani Ghai and Valmike Rampersand. The latest production from the National Theatre, ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’ tells a gripping tale of poverty and global ambition in the Mumbai under-city. Following the lives of the slum-dwellers of Annawadi, one of Mumbai’s most impoverished, ramshackle slums, the play captures the humanity of an underclass fighting to survive the violence, greed and corruption of the rapidly changing world around them. Directed by Rufus Norris and written by

David Hare, the hard-hitting new play, which combines gritty reality with dark humour and a punchy soundtrack, is based on the original award-winning book by Katherine Boo and stars Meera Syal with an impressive supporting cast. The new production is running at the National Theatre from 19th November, and is currently booking until 13th April. Part of the Travelex £15 Tickets season, half the tickets for every performance are £15. It will be broadcast to UK cinemas by National Theatre Live on 12th March.

On his first visit to India, Imran Khan, who took the UK by storm in 2009 with his ‘Unforgettable’ album which was undeniably packed with hugely acclaimed songs, was questioned about what took him so long to work with the Indian film industry. The 30-year-old from the Netherlands has just released his song, titled ‘Let's Celebrate’ from Sanjay Kapoor’s film ‘Tevar’, which is most definitely set to be the next big dance floor track. Talking about his rebellious teenage years and his humble upbringing from a Pakistani household, Imran is not shy to admit to his faults from the past. “My parents are originally from Pakistan. My dad was in a government job, where, when people without a family died at home, my dad and his colleagues were sent to pick up all their stuff and auction it. “For him, it was a big thing, having come from Pakistan and just established himself there. “My mum is a housewife. Initially, I was only interested in sports. Music was a side thing. I was always outside the house playing football and basketball and was very naughty. “At the time, even though I had no money, I was always chilling. I could just not sit at home, not even for ten minutes. “My parents had no hope for me and did not know what to do with me. My other two siblings, both went to school and were into education. “My parents could not control me, so they sent me to a special school, but that too did not help. They would hit me and I would sometimes even hit my mum back.” But in 2011, Imran overcame a drunken life-threatening fall in Dubai, and it was then that he decided it was time he turned his life around. “I would drink ten bottles at a time. “I had a bad accident in Dubai a few years back and now, I don't drink at all. “I was so busy doing shows, drinking and chasing money that I fell down the stairs and had a blackout. I broke my head, my ribs, everything. I was almost dead and had blood on my brain. “I was out of action for a month, but it was God's warning to me, and

Actress Freida Pinto and her long-time boyfriend Dev Patel are reportedly no longer together. The pair, who played on-screen couple in Danny Boyle’s 'Slumdog Millionaire' (2008) have ended their real-life romance after dating for about six years. Though they’ve been going steady for quite some time now, rumours have been rife after some pictures of her and Siddharth Mallya emerged. Freida maintained that she is still serious with her six years younger boyfriend Dev. Slumdog Millionaire emerged as the biggest hit of the year in 2008. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2009, out of which it won eight. Freida Pinto emerged as the next big thing in the industry. The film gained universal acclaim and so did Freida. Her hard-hitting performance coupled with her unconventional looks, carved a strong foothold for her in the industry.

Ungli is directed by avant-garde filmmaker and scriptwriter Rensil D’Silva, who is responsible for some of Indian cinemas most thoughtprovoking screen hits, includingKurbaan, Rang De Basanti, Student Of The Year and the Indian version of awardwinning US TV show 24. Perfectly capturing the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and authority, Ungli is a beautifully acted and directed narrative that conveys in an effective and humorous manner how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces, as they literally give the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. Director Rensil D'Silva says it was not easy to direct Sanjay Dutt for upcoming film 'Ungli' at a time when the actor was getting ready to surrender and serve his remaining jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case.

Motors

Engineered for grip and agility By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk

There’s no mistaking the sense of purpose in the styling of the new Lexus RC F coupe, a car that projects its high performance qualities in every carefully crafted curve and plane. Looking good is one thing, but Lexus’s focus was to produce a design that also fully supports the car’s dynamic potential. Right from the prototype stage, the Lexus RC F was evaluated on race tracks around the world, including Fuji Speedway (true to the car’s sporting Lexus “F” designation) and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Every aspect of the RC F, from its footprint on the road and its body

rigidity, to its suspension, brakes, steering and chassis electronics, was designed to achieve the best grip and agile handling. Although the RC F has relatively compact overall dimensions – 4,705mm long, 1,845mm wide and 1,390mm high – its 2,730mm wheelbase, 1,555mm front track and 1,560mm rear track give it a surprisingly large road footprint, helping maximise the car’s dynamic potential. The bodyshell follows the example set by the Lexus GS in being particularly strong and rigid, tuned for stability at high speed and promoting ultra-precise handling

and steering in all driving conditions. To increase cabin strength and handling stability, key structural elements have been made more robust and additional reinforcements have been added in key areas. The way in which the body shell is assembled, also plays an important part in overall strength of the coupe, and the reduction of vibration and cabin deformation too, for example the use of body adhesive in panel joints, additional spot welding points and laser screw welding. The RC F is equipped with double wishbone front

and multi-link rear suspension, honed during extensive track testing. The front suspension features forged aluminium upper and lower arms, and the rear suspension geometry has been defined exclusively for the RC F with a revised geometry and strategic use of aluminium to reduce unsprung weight. Together these measures ensure outstanding responsiveness, with crisp turn-in and well controlled, progressive body roll, while maintaining the smooth, pliant ride that’s to be expected from even a high-performance Lexus. The RC F’s electronic power steering is designed to achieve excellent dynamic performance and steering feel. A damperless intermediate shaft has been added to the

steering column to increase system rigidity and secure a high degree of responsiveness to steering input. The new shaft features an expandable/contractible stroke mechanism to absorb shaft length changes when driving. This gives a smoother steering feel and a reduction in response lag. The RC F has an all-new Brembo brake package, with improved cooling and a vertical Gsensor integrated in the ABS. At the front there are 380 x 34mm discs with opposed sixpiston aluminium callipers; at the rear the discs measure 345 x 28mm, with opposed four-piston aluminium callipers. Using integrated aluminium monobloc callipers provides high rigidity while also reducing weight.

First Ferrari Sergio delivered By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

The world’s first Ferrari Sergio was delivered to its new owner, the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the UAE, at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, where the Finali Mondiali Ferrari are being staged and which is home to the Ferrari World theme park. Designed by Pininfarina, just six of this incredibly limited edition roadster are being built. The car was created to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse. Needless to say, Sergio was the only possible choice of name for the model, in homage to great Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the unique, longstanding partnership with Ferrari. The Ferrari Sergio is a genuinely radical car. It is both exclusive and spare in the sense that every single element aboard is focused entirely on performance. An authentic opentop, it explicitly references the track, underscoring and intensifying its

sense of sportiness, fun behind the wheel and the pleasure of design at its purest. The Ferrari Sergio’s performance and dynamics are excellent in the extreme too. It is based on the 458 Spider and retains the latter’s technological content as well as all of the functional aspects of its cockpit. It is powered by the latest 605 hp version of Ferrari’s naturally

been pushed to the extreme with the front of the car seeming to penetrate the rear which itself projects forward. The result is an exceptionally sculptural, threedimensional take on the classic roadster. The two bodyshell masses are melded together via a longitudinal black insert, the main styling cue of the design. The flank is also

development of the front spoiler beneath the bonnet balances downforce and optimises heat exchange. The roll-bar is a modern take on the classic Ferrari flying buttress and negative rear window. Integrated into the roll-bars are the air intakes for clutch and gearbox oil cooling. Lastly, the rear nolder and rear extractor generate downforce, adding an efficient finishing flourish

circular air vents seen on other iconic Pininfarina creations from the past. The cockpit is pared-back and functional in the extreme with the engine compartment actually hugging the backs of the seats. The example delivered to Abu Dhabi has three-layer red exterior paintwork and an extremely sporty cockpit with black leather upholstery with contrasting red stitching, Alcantara seat inserts, and extensive carbon dash and door well trim. It also features Sergio-specific forged wheels, in this instance gold in colour with a diamond finish. Each one of the six Ferrari Sergios was configured by its owner in dedicated sessions at the Tailor Made atelier in Maranello where clients are invited to personalise their cars to their own individual tastes. The atelier offers enormous freedom of choice in terms of colours, materials and finishes. As a result, every detail is extremely exclusive, thereby continuing the Prancing Horse tradition begun in the 1950s and 60s of creating bespoke cars minutely tailored to each client’s wishes.

It is powered by the latest 605 hp version of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 4497 cc V8 which has won the International Engine of the Year award on three consecutive occasions. This power unit also guarantees the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds aspirated 4497 cc V8 which has won the International Engine of the Year award on three consecutive occasions. This power unit also guarantees the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds. The Ferrari Sergio has an extremely simple, clear style. Both its volumes and treatments of its surfaces reflect the spirt of Pininfarina’s 1960s and 70s creations for Ferrari. Its proportions have

characterised by the same black longitudinal element which acts as both a dividing and unifying element between front and rear. The two sections of the car flow effortlessly into one another resulting in sublimely harmonious yet extremely muscular forms. As with all Ferraris, the Sergio’s design was never an end in itself but is a marriage of function and aesthetics. The semi-floating

to the car’s design. At the front of the car, Pininfarina has integrated the headlights in a classic move, turning them into a single transparent transverse element, a signature of the car’s extreme formal purity. At the rear, the circular tail lights are another modern nod to Ferrari history. The two-tone theme continues on both the front bonnet and rear deck with the latter featuring the iconic

Engineered for grip and agility Continued from page 81 The ventilated front discs are slotted rather than drilled, helping to keep the brake pads clean and their effectiveness consistent under all driving conditions. The front discs are equipped with spiral fins which, in conjunction with improved cooling duct efficiency, ensure excellent cooling performance. The adoption of a G-sensor is a direct result of testing at the NĂźrburgring. It means the system can allow for changes in vertical

loads, and hence optimise braking force control the instant load returns to the tyres after jumping a crest. The RC F runs on 19-inch forged aluminium wheels. Two designs are offered to UK customers: the RC F uses rims with five pairs of double thin spokes, each with a machined finish; the RC F Carbon has wheels with twin sets of 10 spokes, the inner series set 30 degrees ahead of the outer. The RC F is available to order now, priced from ÂŁ59,995. UK customer deliveries will begin in February.

Built for Bond An Aston Martin, which was created specifically for the new Bond film demonstrates the breadth of the brands’ bespoke capabilities. Aston Martin together with EON Productions, the producers of the James Bond film franchise, unveiled Bond’s stunning new car, the Aston Martin DB10, on the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios. The luxury British sports car brand confirmed that James Bond will indeed, once again, drive an Aston Martin in ‘Spectre’ – the 24th 007 film. On this occasion, it will be a model developed specifically for the film and built in-house by the brand’s design and engineering teams. Led by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, the design team worked closely with the film’s director, Sam Mendes, to create the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy.

Aston Martin debuts its very unique DB10 for 007

Celebrating the great British brand’s half century with Bond, which started with the iconic DB5, the DB10 gives a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins. Dr Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin, said: “In the same year that we celebrate our 50-year relationship with 007, it seems doubly fitting that today we unveiled this wonderful new sports car created especially for James Bond. “To be partnering once again with EON Productions is great news for this company and for everyone around

the world that loves to see Bond at the wheel of an Aston Martin. “I’m incredibly proud of everyone in the team at Gaydon who have brought this special project from concept to reality.” Production will be strictly limited to 10 of the bespoke sports cars, developed and built by the designers, engineers and highly skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. ‘Spectre’ is due for general release on 6th November 2015.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to

take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the

country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.

Winter title race hottens up Jubodhol 1-0 Tetley’s Tino This week’s SLUK game of the week was settled by the single goal as Jubodhol kept their title hopes alive with a slender 1-0 victory over Tetley’s Tino. Having seen the top two claim all three points earlier in the night, the league’s third placed side were forced to work hard against a team who were on a high themselves, coming into the match off the back of a triumph against table toppers Hyde Park. Hamid Ali’s solitary strike was enough to ensure victory and keep Jubodhol to within five points of the summit. From kick-off the Tino’s immediately looked dangerous and were close to taking the lead when Hasan Abrar tested Koyesh Miah from range, the Jubodhol shotstopper pulling off a great save to prevent the opener. Hamid Ali then came close for the high-flyers, yet this time it was the opposite number one, Ziyad Hussain, making a smart save. Chances continued to come for both teams in an open game with Abdul Wahad producing some fine individual play before struggling with his effort on goal and Hasan Noshi also failing to find the net with his effort. After an entertaining first half, with both goalkeepers in unbeatable form, it was always going to take something special to

Victories at the top widens gap below beat either of the pair. In the second half, the game remained open, with all the usual suspects, Noshi, Abrar and Wahab for TT all coming close and at one end whilst at the other Abid Khan and Abdul Kareem also tested the keeper. Five minutes from time, the deciding goal finally came following a very rare mix-up in the Tino’s defence. Jubodhol’s Khan intercepted

PLAYER PLAYEROFOF THE THEMONTH WEEK Kadeem McFarlane has been on red-hot form throughout November, bagging five goals and claiming two assists as he helped Hyde Park cement their place at the top of the table.

Nadeem's pass on the left and the attacker played in Hamid, who drilled in a low powerful shot into the bottom corner - a huge blow for the league’s joint best defence, who failed to reply in the little time remaining. MOTM: Jubodhol's shot stopper, Koyesh Miah, produced a matchwinning display in goal to keep his side within touching distance of the top two.

... rest of the action NFA 2-0 Borussia Teeth

NFA brushed aside Borussia Teeth in the week’s opening encounter as they picked up a comfortable 2-0 win to keep the pressure on the league leaders. The table’s second placed side were back to winning ways, after losing their last two games, thanks to well taken goals from Muhammed Lulu and Rippon Ali. Teeth struggled from the offset against a well organised NFA, failing to trouble the goalkeeper in the first period. Lulu finally broke the deadlock in the second half after an attack down the left resulted in the NFA forward picking up the ball and firing a ferocious shot past the helpless keeper. The lead was doubled shortly after when Ali turned his marker with ease, knocked the ball onto his right and hit a superb shot into the bottom left corner. NFA may have been ruing dropped points in recent weeks yet remain just three points off the top following this comprehensive win. MOTM: Rippon Ali continues to lead his side from the front with a finely taken goal

Al-Aqs 1-0 Samba

Al-Aqs stretched their lead over the bottom two to six points after a vital 1-0 triumph over fellow strugglers Samba FC. Despite a number of half-chances, a failure to turn possession into meaningful attacks proved problematic for Samba who still hold the unwanted record of fewest league goals this season with just seven in 15 games. The deadlock was broken in the first half from a corner when Dilal Ahmed played a clever pass across the area, picking out Shamous who netted the game’s only goal. MOTM: Imran Khan looked strong at the back for Al-Aqs as his side registered their fifth win of the season.

Super Six 1-1 Half a Dozen Cousins

After some fantastic results in recent weeks, Super Six have earned their title of the league’s surprise package yet were forced to settle for the single point against Half a Dozen last week. It was a resolute team performance from HDC as Super Six were left frustrated throughout the game, struggling to break through the league’s leakiest defence. A rare goal for the bottom side came thanks to a strike from Ali, registering HDC’s eighth league goal in 14 games, and the score remained 1-0 at the interval. As the second half began, the underdogs seemed determined to hold onto all three points and had chances of their own to add a second in the game, following break downs in the Super Six attack. Yet, as time ticked on, the HDC wall of defence finally gave way as Raza Rafique came up with the equaliser to level the scores at the full time whistle. MOTM: A rare team man-of-the-match award goes to HDC for their inspiring defensive performance.

Hyde Park 4-0 Old Bacca Boys

League leaders Hyde Park thrashed cup winners, Old Bacca Boys, 4-0 to remain three points clear at the top. A champion-like performance from the table toppers ensured a dominant victory in a game which was tipped to be a close encounter yet proved to be anything but. SLUK player of the month, Kadeem Mcfarlane, bagged a brace, whilst Tyler Bussue’s double helped cap off a fine team performance from the free-scoring side. OBB looked nothing like the team that won the SLUK cup a few weeks ago, as they were unable to match the quality on show from their opponents. MOTM: Tyler Bussue hammered home two goals for the league’s top scorers.

AMIR “KING” KHAN TAKES ON A RISKY OPPONENT TO SECURE A FIGHT WITH FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

On 14th December 2014 in the early hours of Sunday morning Britain’s Amir Khan (29-3, 19KO) will be fighting the tough and talented American Devon Alexander (26-2, 14KO) at the MGM Grand in Las Vagas, Nevada. Khan is hoping to display his boxing talent and display his dazzling speed, skills and footwork to secure a one sided win against Alexander who is probably one of Khan’s toughest opponents to date. Alexander himself is a two division world champion and has fought some of the best fighters in the world. Khan is hoping that a win against Alexander will secure him a fight with the current best pound for pound boxer in the world Floyd Mayweather. However Khan’s promoters have also expressed an interest in securing a fight with Manny Pacquiao that according to them is a better possibility than a bout against Mayweather. Khan himself knows that he must impress the boxing world and has said “I have to win this fight to be at the level people are talking about, not just win it, but win in

Khalil Alam

good style. It’s all about sticking to the game plan.” Personally I feel that it is unfortunate for Khan to have suffered horrific knockout defeats against the elite boxers in the world like Lamont Paterson and Danny Garcia and had he even managed to avenge those defeats later in his career (that he was capable of doing) then I feel Khan would have secured a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao by now. I am also of the opinion that Khan still has not proved his full potential and he must win impressively against the more elite and top ten ranked boxers in the division to prove that he is one of the best and a win against Alexander on the weekend may be a step in the right direction. Alexander himself is a very risky fight for Khan and he has his own plans and reignited hunger to gain another world title fight should he manage to win against Khan. Alexander is also a very tough opponent for Khan and I expect both fighters to display their best career performance even though I feel Khan will be victorious in a very competitive fight. There is also a possibility of a domestic fight against the IBF welterweight champion of the world Kell Brook who is now back into boxing training after suffering a previous knife attack. Brook has expressed an interest to fight in March 2015 and there is a possibility that Khan v Brook at Wembley Stadium in the UK maybe on the horizon. We wish Khan all the best with his fight this weekend and hope he manages to secure this crucial win that he feels he desperately needs for his boxing career.

Back in the spin of things Spin bowlers, Sachithra Senanayake and Kane Williamson, have been told they can bowl once more after being banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this year. The spin duo have both remodelled their bowling action to adhere to greater enforced rulings by the ICC. The Sri Lankan offspinner and the New Zealand part-time bowler were banned in July as part of the governing body's RETURN: Sachithra Senanayake can clampdown to rid the now return to the Sri Lankan squad game of players with suspect actions. “Since being reported suspect action and not earlier in the year, both bowlers reproducing the legal technique have remodelled their bowling that was analysed during the reactions prior to applying to have test. their actions re-tested," the ICC Senanayake, 29, was included said in a statement. in Sri Lanka's list of 30 “The results showed that the probables for the 50-over World level of elbow extension Cup in Australia in New Zealand measured for all deliveries even before his bowling action bowled was now within the 15was cleared by the ICC. degree level of tolerance Primarily a middle-order permitted under ICC batsman, Williamson also regulations,” it added. features in New Zealand's The duo can still be reported if preliminary squad for the umpires find them displaying a tournament in February-March.

In an emotional day of cricket, Australia’s opening batsmen Darren Warner smashed a fitting century in his first appearance since the tragic death of teammate, Phillip Hughes, dedicating the milestone to the ‘little man’. The 28-year-old smashed a huge total of 145 on the opening day of the first Test against India, finding 19 boundaries in front of a moving crowd at the Adelaide Oval. A strong drive off legspinner Karn Sharma earned the single run that brought up the 100, and after removing his helmet and kissing the crest, Warner pointed to the skies in tribute to his fallen teammate. “I like to do a little celebration but that was definitely for him today,” Warner said during his pitchside interview. “He was at the other end when I scored my first 100 and I dedicated that 100 to him today. It's been an emotional week for us all and I know he'd have been proud of us today.” Tributes were also paid to Hughes prior to the game with fans and players both marking the first international match since the death. The game started with a fast pace, as Australia looked to ensure the Test got a fitting emphatic performance. A big four off the first

delivery from Warner set his team on their way, and knocked a further seven boundaries in the opening four overs. “That was all about instinct, that's how I play, but there was a lot of adrenaline running through my head,” Warner added. “I knew the little man up there was with me at the other end and it all fell into place.” Hughes died in hospital two days after being struck by a short ball in a domestic match, prompting a debate over the use of bouncers in cricket. It was not until the first ball of the fourth over on Tuesday that Aaron banged one in, a textbook delivery that prompted applause from the crowd of 25,000 and which Warner did well to avoid. Warner was playing at the Sydney Cricket Ground when Hughes was felled and admitted it had been ‘tough’ to get back out on the pitch with the memories still fresh in his mind. There was another glance to the sky and raising of his bat when he reached 63, the score Hughes was on when he was struck down in a Sheffield Shield match. “It was something that was in the back of my mind, it's going to be a special number for all of us for many years to come,” Warner said.

Cancelled

Bradford Council have announced that all sporting fixtures on council owned pitches for this coming weekend, 13th and 14th December, have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. All games, including those set to be played on school pitches and at Rawdon Meadows, have been forced to be called off after officials deemed the surfaces of play, ‘too dangerous’. Due to recent rain, many of the pitches are waterlogged and the risk of injury to players increases whilst the standard of football is bound to decrease. During the winter months, Bradford Council only close off pitches when there is no alternative solution and this weekend the surfaces would suffer substantial damage if sporting events were played on them.

Sky Ride continues

The Sky Ride Programme in Kirklees, the Council’s collaboration with British Cycling, will continue to provide guided leisure bike rides over the winter months. A number of upcoming rides will be taking place locally over the next two weeks and cyclists can join in regardless of their abilities. The first of many rides will be staged on Sunday 14th December at 10am where residents are invited to join Ian and Jill for a steady paced route from dewsbury to Huddersfield and back. With a time frame of approximately two hours, the track is mainly off road yet provides the perfect environment for beginner cyclists.

New deal for Barca Star Barcelona’s rising star, Munir El Haddadi, looks set to be staying with the Catalan giants for the foreseeable future after signing a contract extension. The 19-year-old is just one of the latest stars to arrive on the scene from Barcelona’s unparalleled youth academy. Having made his league debut earlier this season in August against Elche, and scoring in that same game, El Haddadi has gone on to appear 12 more times for Barcelona’s senior side. The new deal does not extend El Haddadi's contract beyond its current expiry date at the end of June 2017, but it does increase wages and buyout clauses, with the latter rising to almost £28million. A statement from Barcelona read: “Munir El Haddadi has signed an updated contract in which his release clause, in accordance with the new agreement, rises to

35 million euros. “The signing took place at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and also present were the sporting vice-president Jordi Mestre and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.” El Haddadi joined Barcelona's youth academy from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and broke into the senior squad this summer after impressing coach Luis Enrique in pre-season. He has started in six league games for Barcelona, scoring one goal and setting up another.

SIGNED: Munir El Haddadi pledged his future to the Camp Nou club after signing an improved contract running until June 2017

Kenya’s national cricket team arrived in Lahore amid tight security on Wednesday for the most high-profile series in Pakistan since a March 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team. The Kenyan players and officials were whisked away under police escort to the National Cricket Academy adjacent to the Pakistan board headquarters at the Gaddafi stadium. Kenya, who will play five one-day matches against a Pakistan A side, are only the second team to play international cricket in the country since tours were suspended after militants attacked the Sri Lankans in Lahore. Six Pakistani policemen and a van driver were killed in that attack whilst some Sri Lanka players and a Pakistani umpire, Ahsan Raza, sustained injuries. Although Afghanistan have played a couple of low profile series in Pakistan since 2009, a senior PCB official told news agency, Reuters, that the Kenyan visit was much more significant.
