A family from Leeds have said they will ‘do whatever it takes’ to prove the innocence of their youngest son after he was handed a five year prison sentence earlier this month. 24-year-old Shamas Ahmad, from Beeston, was sentenced by the Leeds Crown Court on Friday 11th April following his conviction for Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) in July last year.

A convenience store has been slapped with a fine over £5,000, after officers paid them a visit following a tip-off that it was selling banned vodka. A complaint about East Euro Food Centre on Whetley Lane, Bradford led inspectors to carry out some investigations into the products that the shop was selling. At the time officers found 23 bottles of a product branded as ‘Redwood Vodka’, found to not be vodka. In addition to this, also found were 146 items of food totalling 883 days beyond their marked use by dates and numerous food items found to not be labelled in English. Bradford Magistrates court imposed a fine of £2,200, costs of £2,856 and victim surcharge of £220 against East Euro Food Centre. The store, owned by Shirazi Cash & Carry Ltd was fined £1,100 plus £110 victim surcharge and £1,428 costs. The director of the company; Esmaeil Rajabie was fined £1,100 plus £110 victim surcharge and £1,428 costs. The vodka was analysed by the Public Analyst and found to not be the substance demanded. The ‘Redwood Vodka’ was found to contain isopropanol and tertiary butanol, neither of which are found in alcohol of agricultural origin. It was also found to be 4.5

per cent below the required minimum strength for vodka. Food displayed for sale should bear a “use by” or a “best before” date. JUSTICE: Six-year sentence for hammer-wielding thief

A family, who were ‘terrified’ when their Leeds shop was subject to an armed-attacked last year, have described the sentencing of their assailant as ‘justice’ served. 38-year-old Jonathan Kear was handed a six year prison sentence last week for theft at Neil’s Store, in Kirkstall, Leeds, on 28th October 2013. The store’s owners, Mr Thakor Patel, 74, and his wife Dhaniben, 73, were in the back with their daughter-in-law, Vilas, at the time when Kear came through the doors with hammer in hand. After threatening the family members with his weapon, he escaped with bottles of spirits and cigarettes from behind the counter. Three days later, Kear returned to the store to buy some sweets for children on Halloween and within half an hour of leaving the premises he was arrested by West Yorkshire police. Mr Patel says he was relieved to see Kear detained by police and explained how he was caught so soon. “It was very good to see him arrested,” he explained. “We have been here for more than 40 years and never had an incident like this so it was all a strange experience. “After the first attack the police installed a panic alarm behind the counter so when Jonathan came back my daughter-in-law pushed it and within three minutes there were three police cars here.” He added: “We told him during the attack that ‘we know who you are’ because his only

Putting road safety on the map

A multi-sensory educational roadshow promoting road safety, walking and cycling to school continues its tour in Kirklees high schools and academies next week. The ‘One Road Many Users’ tour, staged by Amelix Youth Projects and commissioned by Kirklees Council, is aimed at an 11 to 18 year old audience. It features singersongwriter Luke Potter and engages through music and interactive games, requiring the audience to really think about road safety and the environment. Luke Potter, who has recently been on tour in the USA under the same management as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, is joined by dancers, singers and a presenter that hosts various games and quizzes with prizes for the young people. Work is due to start next week on landscaping and a new riverside walk nature reserve at Buck Lane, Baildon. The environmental improvements by Bradford Council will be carried out as part of planning permission granted for the high-tech business park development. The project will see new trees planted along Otley Road to replace those lost by the construction of a new highway junction. They will include a mixture of species including oak, maple, lime and horse chestnut, to provide an attractive entrance to the new business park. The highway banking will be seeded with wild flowers and fencing will be provided to the new bridleway. The floodplain next to the river will be transformed into a wildflower meadow, with a wetland area.

Whilst working as a doorman at an establishment in Leeds, Shamas was involved in a dispute with a group of customers and it is alleged that he struck one of them ‘four times’ with a glass. However, following the fatherof-one’s sentencing, his family are adamant that he is innocent and was purely ‘acting in self-defence’ after being attacked by a group of between eight and ten customers. Shamas’ father, Mukhtar Ahmad, spoke emotionally about his son and his disbelief at the court’s final verdict.

“He is my youngest of four sons so he is the favourite I think it is fair to say,” he said. “We were all just shocked when we heard ‘five years’ because he has always insisted on his innocence. “He has a wife, a child and works in Sainsbury’s. He is not a violent person and he is my carer. I don’t know what I would do without his help. “We are not a rich family but we will do whatever it takes to prove his innocence, and if it means we have to re-mortgage then that is what we will do.” Shamas is the youngest of four

brothers and finished working as a doorman following the incident, taking up a full-time position at one of Leeds’ Sainsbury’s stores. Having previously never been in trouble with the police, his brothers, Shahban and Shabab expressed their disappointment at the way the whole case was handled. “At the beginning we weren’t fully prepared because it wasn’t until about two weeks before the actual trial that we realised how serious the charge was,” Shabab explained. “I know my brother and if there was any small inkling that he was guilty we wouldn’t be having this conversation now. This was another thing the family say was ‘unjust’ with the cross examinations reportedly taking longer for the five witnesses than their own. “Eric (Shamas’ witness) was examined and cross examined within 15 minutes whilst their five witnesses took hours each on the stand,” Shabab continued. “It just seems that the whole case was rushed and because of that important details were overlooked. There wasn’t any CCTV in operation until two days after the event took place and by then it was too late. “Their witnesses, most of them had been drinking all day so were drunk at the time of the event, almost all contradicted each other’s’ statements. “Even our solicitor, Nasser Ali Khan, did not seem to have sufficient paperwork for the defence; it was only five pages of A4 in length and when we tried to question him on it he wouldn’t answer.” The family have 28 days from the date of the sentencing to appeal and are currently waiting for the court’s transcripts to come through the post – something which has cost them £2,500 to obtain.

What started off as a routine trip to an autocentre and bike shop, soon turned into a scam for one Bradford man. 50-year-old bus driver Abdul Hamid’s story is one which happened over the space of just two expensive days. He found himself losing £3,000, and gaining possession of two mysterious stones and involved three unknown characters who he has not seen since the day of the trade. Now he is warning others not to make the same mistakes he did, in the hope of saving people thousands of pounds. “Looking back I do feel embarrassed that it happened to me but now I want to let others know that this is happening in Bradford,” Mr Hamid said. “I let greed get the better of me for that one moment and now I have lost my money and just have these two rocks which I don’t even know the real worth of.” On Monday 14th April, Mr Hamid met the first man, who called himself ‘Mousa’, at Halfords in the city centre. The Bradford resident was approached by Mousa who enquired about the cost of his car as his ‘friend’ was in need of a new motor so the pair went to see him. Upon arrival, the second man, who called himself ‘Mr Mumbai’, got in the car with ten stones which seemed to have gems inside them. After inspecting them, Mousa, driven by Mr Hamid, took them to

be seen by his friend and jeweller, a man who called himself ‘Mr Williams’. Mr Williams declared the rocks to have a value of approximately £385 per gram, which worked out as £48,000 when cleaned and so struck a deal with Mousa to buy two stones. When Mousa and Mr Hamid returned to see Mr Mumbai to purchase the two stones, Mousa was told he would have to pay a deposit in ‘pound sterling’, as Mr Mumbai was from another country and had no English currency, if he was to have them for a final price of £29,000. Following this conversation, the three men went their separate ways and Mr Hamid says he thought that was the end of his connection with the men. “After he told Mousa he wants cash, I could tell that it wasn’t going to happen there and then,” Mr Hamid explained. “Looking back, it is perhaps clear to see that they wanted me to hear the fake value of these socalled ‘gems’ so that I would be tempted to get involved with any sort of deal. “But at that time I didn’t really think anything of it.” The next day, Mousa phoned Mr Hamid and said the trade was likely to be called off as he had only managed to gather £1,100 in cash. Mr Hamid, believing he could almost instantly double his investment, offered to pay the other £3,000 deposit as part of a deal which would benefit him financially. “My wife kept telling me not to do it but I was so convinced that it

was a simple deal that I could not resist,” he explained. “I thought I was going to be seeing these men again as they wanted to buy my car so I went to my bank and withdrew the cash for the exchange. “I remember asking Mousa why he didn’t sell the Rolex watch he was wearing to a pawn shop but he said he had tried and they needed a receipt which he didn’t have.” Mr Hamid and Mousa met Mr Mumbai in Foster Square, Bradford, on Tuesday 15th April where the exchange of cash was done in return for the two stones. After the deal, which again took place in Mr Hamid’s car, the targeted victim was then invited by Mr Mumbai to see where he was supposedly ‘staying’ whilst in Bradford. Mr Hamid got out of his car to walk with Mr Mumbai to the hotel and when he turned back to go to his car, Mousa had gone and Mr Mumbai was nowhere to be seen. “All I had left was the stones,” he said. “I tried calling both men but they did not answer their phones so I went to the police. “They told me there was nothing they could do as I had wilfully handed over the money so now I am stuck with these supposed gems and lost £3,000. “I just hope by telling others of my story that this won’t happen to anybody else.” Mr Hamid is currently waiting to see if the CCTV cameras at Halfords picked up any images of the man who called himself ‘Mousa’ and plans on getting the stones valued as his own investigation continues.

A University of Huddersfield student is just one member of a research team who has been tasked with uncovering the true contribution made to Britain’s Great War efforts by India’s Sikhs. Between 1914 and 1918, tens of thousands of Sikhs from the South Asian country went to war and served on all fronts of the conflict, often with reckless courage. Yet much of their contribution is often overlooked and that is why a major project by the UK Punjabi Heritage Association has been launched, to commemorate their efforts. Amerdeep Singh Panesar, brought up in Halifax and member of a Sikh family, is in the second year of his history and politics degree at the West Yorkshire university. After learning about the programme he jumped at the opportunity to join the nationwide team of researchers who are combing regimental historians, official dispatches, correspondence and war grave records for information on the Sikh soldiers of WWI. “What drew me to the project is that soldiers of World War One who were Sikhs, and from other backgrounds in India, do not get the recognition they deserve,” he explained. “I really want to get the word out, so that people and schools know all about this story.” Backed by a £450,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is named ‘Empire, Faith and War’ and is planned to last three years, with the findings being shown via an exhibition, a

Sikh Soldiers war efforts to be commemorated through nationwide project documentary film, a book and an online database. Amerdeep added his belief that the Sikh soldiers deserved their rightful place in history with the WW1 Military service embedded in Sikh culture. He added: “In 1914, Sikhs accounted for less than two per cent of the population of India, but 22 per cent of the Indian army were Sikhs – a huge commitment from such a small group. “Initially, there were 35,000 of them in the army, but by the end of war, some 100,000 Sikhs had volunteered.” Shipped overseas and led by British officers, the Sikhs served on the Western Front, including the Somme, but also in theatres such as Egypt, Mesopotamia and Turkey. Some were captured, meaning that German POW records are among the sources being used by the UKPHA project. Back in the Punjab, says Amerdeep, there were mixed feelings about the Sikh soldiers serving abroad. “After all, they were not fighting for India, but for the British Empire”. Their bravery was not in doubt, and Amerdeep explained how he encountered the story of a British war hero, Lieutenant John Smyth, who had no difficulty securing Sikh volunteers for a virtual suicide mission, carrying bombs to a position just yards away from the enemy.

All ten Sikhs who took part in the raid – described as ‘one of the most gallant episodes of the whole war’ – were killed, and were posthumously awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal. Smyth survived and got the VC, although he reckoned his men were not given the recognition they deserved. For Amerdeep, who describes himself as a cultural rather than religious Sikh, taking part in ‘Empire, Faith and War’ has meant regular trips to London, collaborating with fellow researchers, delving into records at locations such as the Imperial War Museum and the National Archives, as they gather the data that will feed into projects such as the exhibition.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals is the first site in the UK to trial a powder called the ‘Hemospray’, which aims to stop ulcers from bleeding and help patients avoid open surgery and long hospital stays. Dr Sulleman Moreea, who is the UK’s chief investigator for the HALT trial (as it is known) said: “Gastrointestinal bleeding remains one of the most important emergencies in gastroenterology. Traditionally, the way doctors treat bleeding ulcers in the stomach and duodenum is to use an endscope – to inject adrenaline and to cauterise or stem the blood-flow through the use of medical clips. “This technique can be technically demanding and difficult. If the bleeding can’t be controlled, the patient will have to be transferred to the operating theatre for major surgery which is usually always followed by a long stay in hospital to recuperate. “Hemospray is a new powder that appears to act quickly when

sprayed on to the ulcer to control the bleeding and can be easily inserted via endoscope. Although there is a learning curve for the use of the Hemospray, ultimately this is an easier technique compared to the current methods which we use.” The HALT study is a multinational, commercial study funded by US-based pharmaceutical company, Cook Medical, involving centres in Hong Kong, Canada, Holland and the United States. It aims to recruit 80 patients worldwide, of which 40 have been recruited so far. The Bradford team, which includes specialist research nurse, Karl Ward, have screened eight people and recruited three patients since the study began in February. The hospital hopes to recruit 10 patients in total over the next five months. Initial reports of Hemospray’s usefulness in stemming bleeding peptic ulcers in the USA have proved promising but were limited by the small number of patients, so larger studies such as HALT will confirm its true worth in the management of upper

gastrointestinal bleeding. Dr Moreea added. “If the Hemospray proves effective in this current study then further research will be carried out to directly compare the powder against the current techniques of adrenaline, cauterization and clips. “If the Hemospray proves less successful than we think it will be, doctors will use the current endoscopic and surgical techniques to stem the bleeding.” Currently, the Foundation Trust sees between two to three patients every month with peptic ulcers, while around three to four patients a year will end up in surgery if endoscopic options fail to stop their bleeding. “Bradford patients will benefit from this new treatment if it proves effective as their bleeding will be easier to control and hopefully fewer patients will need to go to surgery for peptic ulcers,” added Mr Ward. Nottingham University Hospitals will be the only other UK site to take part in the trial and the team there will be led by consultant gastroenterologist, Professor Krish Ragunath.

A new educational establishment is set to officially open its doors to the children of West Yorkshire at the start of the next academic year as the Al Hashim Academy launches in Batley. From September, the school will operate out of Kirklees College’s old Batley centre, on Cambridge Street, which has been unused for more than two years. Having been previously based at the old Shoulder of Mutton premises, on Upper Road, Batley, the new school will be able to cater for more than 200 pupils within its first two years. Preparations began earlier this month for the new school year, with the grand Grade II listed building only requiring minor work to get it up to operating standards. Founding director Khabbaab Raja explained why the school was set up and how much he looked forward to opening later this year. “A faith-based school in this area has been long overdue,” he said. “There has been a need for nearly two decades, maybe more. “There have been projects by

other groups in the past but it just did not happen. Mr Raja added that the ease of transition between a college and

secondary school was also a deciding factor when purchasing the building. “We do not need to do much as it was already an education centre,” he explained. “There were chairs and furniture left behind so we had almost everything we needed. Political earthquake With polls showing the UK Independence Party will come second in the May 22nd election, ahead of Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives but behind the opposition Labour Party, UKIP hopes to attract enough extra votes to win the ballot outright. Tackling car crime 14 arrests already made under Operation Emporia

BEWARE: West Yorkshire police have stepped up their efforts to protect owners of 4x4s in the county with Operation Emporia already bringing a number of thieves to justice

A West Yorkshire wide operation to tackle the theft of 4x4 vehicle parts is already making a difference with 14 people arrested so far. A special task force of officers have executed warrants and searched nine premises in Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield over the last month leading to the recovery of two stolen

vehicles and a number of stolen parts from Range Rovers. Of those arrested, one man has been charged with theft, while the other 13 have been interviewed and released on bail. Operation Emporia was set up to combat an emerging issue with Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles being targeted by thieves, particularly for LED headlamps but also doors, mirrors, bonnets, wheels clusters and grills. Chief Inspector Steve Thomas, the force lead for Operation Emporia, said: “Operation Emporia is a coordinated force response to an identified emerging crime type with 4x4 vehicles being targeted by thieves. The activity over the past few weeks shows how seriously we are taking this issue and we will continue to utilise a number of tactics to tackle this offending head-on. “Working closely with manufacturers, we have been stopping certain vehicles fitted with LED headlamps to ensure they are legitimate. I want to reassure drivers of Land Rovers or Range Rovers fitted with LED

headlights that if they are stopped by the police it is part of our work to protect their vehicles and would look for their support.” As part of the ongoing work under Operation Emporia, owners of 4x4 vehicles who have recently had secondhand LED lights fitted are being urged to contact police with proof of purchase. “I would urge anyone who has recently had such parts fitted to make contact to advise where these parts were fitted,” CI Steve Thomas added. “I would also urge caution for anyone looking to buy second-hand parts. “If we stop a vehicle and it is suspected that it is fitted with stolen parts then these will be removed and the owner of the vehicle could face prosecution.” Members of the public are also being encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour or thefts of parts from their own vehicles. Pupils at a local Leeds school took time out of their academic studies earlier this month to help raise thousands of pounds for educational establishments around the world. Student members of the Hindu and Sikh societies from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) handed over a cheque of £5,000 to a representative from the charity Saraswati Vidyalaya – a service project of The Three R’s Education Trust. ‘Saraswati Vidyalayas’ are one teacher schools in India and Nepal which are helping to transform the lives of children in the south Asian countries by giving them greater access to education. Thanks to the generosity of students at GSAL, five of these new schools can now be built in remote villages of the two countries, with the total amount donated to the cause by the Leeds school now standing at £10,000. The main fundraiser each year is the Diwali show, organised by the Hindu and Sikh student faith leaders, an event which brings the

whole community together for an evening of Indian food, music and dance. As well as the Diwali show, a tasty sum is raised each year through curry tastings and cooking demonstrations thanks to the generosity of Mr and Mrs Dabhi of Hansa’s Restaurant in Leeds. Mr Hashmukh Shah is Saraswati Vidyalaya’s coordinator in the UK and

West Yorkshire’s motorists are being urged to ensure their car insurance is up to date at the county’s police force clamp down in the illegal drivers. Police and partners suspended the licences of seven taxis and seized a car as part of a Day of Action to tackle crime and boost safety on Leeds Road last week, in the latest of a series of operations taking place in the area through the forces Viper campaign. Viper officers together with staff from the Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team and partners including VOSA stopped 75 vehicles to check their road worthiness and issue eight prohibition notices. Valuable intelligence about known offenders was also gained in the operation which was the second of a series of April initiatives to disrupt offenders. Earlier this month, on 4th and 6th April, Viper officers joined forces with new Special Constables to increase patrolling across the districts streets, in operations to target known street level offenders and disrupt them. Recruitment events were also held in Dewsbury to attract more Special Constables to join West Yorkshire Police, in particular those from black and ethnic minority groups. Finally, officers also patrolled at a car boot sale at the Dewsbury Rams grounds on Sunday 6th April to check for counterfeit goods and speak with those attending.

A family man, who suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing football with friends last year, has said he was ‘delighted’ to see the sport facility install their own defibrillator following his serious incident. 42-year-old Tair Bashir, from Rotherham, collapsed in December after struggling to breathe at the city’s Lucozade Power League premises. For 20 minutes his teammates, Amir Afzal, of Duke Street Medical Centre, and Mehrban Ghani, of White Rose Medical Practice, heroically performed CPR non-stop on their friend whilst fellow GP, Ashrif Akram, held the head of Mr Bashir. The Rotherham man is now recovering at home and still has at least four weeks left on a cardiorehabilitation programme before he can contemplate going back to work. Yet it could have been much worse for Mr Bashir had it not been for the knowledge of his friends who he thanks for saving his life. “If these guys hadn’t exerted the efforts that they did, if they had decided to quit five minutes sooner, I don’t know what would have happened and I may not be here now,” he said following the incident. Earlier this month, Mr

Bashir paid a visit to the premises for the first time since his incident and said he was encouraged to see progressive steps being made. He added: “It’s great to see that they have finally got one (defibrillator) and I popped up the other day to see it for myself. “Hopefully they will never have to use it but it is important to have it there. “Personally I think they should be more common place because at the end of the day it can save somebody’s life so it isn’t really any different to something like a fire extinguisher. “I’ve been looking on the internet and there are petitions out there asking government to legislate that public places have defibrillators which is an encouraging thing to see.” Alex Tarratt, manager of the Sheffield Power League, said he was more than happy to install the device and hoped other places would follow suit. He said: “After Tair’s cardiac arrest we decided that it would only be beneficial to have defibrillator on site so if an incident like this does happen again we are prepared. “I would urge other venues to do the same because if something as small as this could save a life then it is a very worthy investment.”

From 22 April 2014 there are various changes which will have an impact on applicants wishing to commence Children Act proceedings. The Children and Families Act 2014 sets out the following major changes: • Introduction of Single Family Court – A national court for all family proceedings in England & Wales. Although local county courts will still exist to accept counter applications such as divorce, all applications relating to children will have to be issued from a centralised Designated Family Court. The case will then be allocated by the ‘gatekeeping team’ to the most appropriate court and level of judge. • Compulsory family mediation – Courts will no longer accept applications to issue Children Act proceedings (unless a specified exemption applies) until applicants have first attended a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This is now a compulsory requirement for separating couples to resolve financial matters and arrangements for children. • New terminology – ‘Contact’ and ‘residence’ orders will be removed and instead will be called ‘child arrangement orders’. This is to highlight the court’s primary concern of the welfare of the child. • New rules on evidence – Expert evidence (e.g. local authority reports) will only be permitted if it is ‘necessary’ to assist the court to resolve disputes justly. • Court fees – There is no longer a court fee for injunction applications, such as nonmolestation and occupation orders, given the urgency and sensitivity of such applications. Fundraising flurry rounds off White Rose charity partnership

Leeds’ White Rose Shopping Centre has rounded off its charity partnership with St. Gemma’s Hospice in style with a pop-up shop, bringing the amount raised for the charity to more than £108,800. Since April 2012, staff at the Centre has supported a range of fundraising activities in order to

raise valuable funds for the charity. Everything from tombolas, singing contests, Christmas jumper days, performances by carol singers, Valentine’s balloon sales have all taken place with the most recent Mother’s Day pop-up shop activity, raising more than £500. The Centre worked in

partnership with St. Gemma’s and Luscombe Suzuki to promote the St. Gemma’s Hospice Big Car Raffle, which took place from December 2013 to January 2014 and raised more than £60,000 for the charity. During the six weeks in which it was held the St. Gemma’s Big Car Raffle gave entrants the chance to win a host of prizes with the grand prize winner, Maureen Dunne, driving away in a new Suzuki Swift, which was kindly donated by the team at Luscombe Suzuki. Speaking about the charity partnership centre manager at White Rose, Dean Stratton, said:

“We’re delighted that we’ve managed to raise more than £108,000 for St. Gemma’s Hospice and would like to say a big thank you to all our shoppers that got behind our fundraising activities over the last two years, as we couldn’t have raised such a substantial amount without them. “St. Gemma’s conducts vital work in our local community by offering care and support to terminally ill patients and their families. Sky Ride Local rides launched for the summer

The days are getting warmer and longer so now is the time to get back in the saddle. British Cycling's Sky Ride Local programme of rides starts on Sunday, May 22nd, offering local people the opportunity to go on guided routes all around the district. But Breeze rides for women are already taking place with several coming up shortly. There is a Greenway jaunt this Sunday, 27 April, from Victoria Car Park at Cleckheaton, a four hour ride from Hirst Lock in Saltaire to Rodley next Wednesday, 30 April, for mountain or hybrid bike riders, and a 15 mile towpath ride, also from Hirst Lock, on Thursday, 8 May. This popular programme is organised by British Cycling and Sky in partnership with Bradford Council. The rides vary in distance and difficulty from easy to challenging, so that people can just go for easy going spins or fast-paced and hilly routes if they are more experienced. Dan Goodey, British Cycling's Recreation Manager for Yorkshire, said: "Cycling has never been more popular, especially with the Grand Depart of the Tour de France taking place on July 5th and 6th in our region. Young people in Leeds will find out how they can become the building and construction workers of the future at a special event this month. Youngsters from schools and colleges across the city will be at Leeds Civic Hall for the Construction Apprenticeship Fair on April 28, which has been organised by Leeds City Council’s Apprenticeship Hub. More than 100 people aged 1624 will get the chance to hear about apprenticeship opportunities with the firms behind some of the city’s biggest development projects. Representatives from Hammersons, who are currently working on the £130m Victoria Gate retail scheme, will be attending along with staff from Keepmoat, the company working with Leeds City Council on the housing regeneration programme, will also be on hand on the day. Both companies will be talking about vacancies and

opportunities as well as offering advice about the industry. Kwami Thompson, from Harehills, was recently taken on by Keepmoat as an apprentice plasterer on the housing regeneration project. The 20-year-old said the apprenticeship fair would be a great opportunity for other young people to follow in his footsteps. He said: “I’ve been on site for a few weeks now and it's greateveryone is so friendly and I’m really enjoying it. “Doing an apprenticeship has changed my life and if anyone is thinking of going into the construction industry, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. “I’m learning new skills, getting more experience being part of a big project and this really is the best way forward for me.” Also attending the fair will be a range of top training providers including Leeds College of Building and CITB. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: “The Construction Apprenticeship Fair is the perfect place for

young people to get access to key knowledge and information from within the industry. “We’ve seen the construction industry bounce back in a big way in Leeds recently and we’ve got some huge and exciting projects taking place in the city both now and in the future. “Those types of developments create some fantastic opportunities, so now is a great time for young people to get involved in building and construction and start a career that could see them help to change the face of Leeds.” Young people attending the fair can register and apply for opportunities on the day and schools and colleges can also book the Leeds Apprenticeship Hub to deliver workshops and information sessions. Challenging the stigmas that surround mental health A brand new project has been launched in Leeds to help people with mental health problems overcome their condition. Set up by Hamara, and funded by ‘Time to Change’, the ‘Khushi project’ works with volunteers who have lived experience of mental health issues be it individually or as a carer for a loved one. Whether it is experience with stress, depression, post-natal depression, bi-polar, or anything to do with mental health; the project allows people affected by these often debilitating conditions to make ‘social contact’ through ‘meaningful conversations’. The phrase ‘Social Contact’ refers to a conversation between someone with experience of mental health problems and with someone without, discussing the challenges faced by the prior. Meeting someone who is open about their experiences and having the chance to ask questions, is something the Khushi project utilises to make people think twice about

commonly held stereotypes. Hamara will be working closely with partner agencies in order to engage with individuals from the public who have little or no experience of mental health in an attempt to change attitudes towards the issue and to challenge stigma and discrimination. By providing a service that will help improve public attitudes and behaviour towards mental health

issues, the Khushi project aims to reduce the number of people facing stigma and discrimination in relation to their mental health. Sport funding boost

Ravenscliffe High School, in partnership with Calderdale Council, is among 324 local sports projects to secure a share of £17 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. Sport England has awarded £113,882 to fund community sports changing facilities and storage for adapted bicycles at Spring Hall. The facilities will be fully accessible, DDA compliant, and will benefit the 30,000+ visitors who use the athletics track each year. The proposed facilities will form part of the new “Ravenscliffe@SpringHall” project; a brand new, purpose built sixth form and community learning centre.

Healthwatch Bradford celebrate first year’s success

An organisation, which was set up last year to give the public a stronger voice when it comes to healthcare in Bradford, was celebrating earlier this month as it reached it’s one year anniversary. Healthwatch Bradford celebrated its first year of operation at a public event in the city with members of the group’s board celebrating with a special birthday cake. The event was attended by almost 100 people, who had an opportunity to challenge those in charge of health services in the district about what they are doing to improve people’s experiences of GP services. Earlier this year Healthwatch published a report, ‘Invisible at the

Desk’, which shows that although many people get good clinical care from their GP, there is wide variation in standards across Bradford and District, and some groups of people are having particularly bad experiences. At the latest Healthwatch event, speakers from the three local Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS England responded to questions from members of the public and talked about the actions they will take to improve services. Healthwatch will be following up to tell the public more about what action the local NHS is taking in response to patient opinion, and to make sure that plans lead to better patient experiences. Speaking after the event, Chair of the Healthwatch Board, Javed Khan, said: “After our first year, Healthwatch

Bradford and District is in a strong position to call on health and social care providers to make positive changes for patients, service users and carers across our district. “It was great to see so many members of the public there and actively participating; it was a really good mix of people with representation from all parts of our communities. “Our local Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS England fielded a strong panel of senior managers and clinicians, indicating that Healthwatch is seen as a force to be reckoned with and that they need to come along and respond to patient opinion. “I’m very proud of the work that Healthwatch staff, volunteers, and the Board have carried out in the first year, and look forward to building on that for the future.”

Selfless teen meets Prime Minister at special reception

A teenager from London said he was ‘very excited’ after hearing of the news that he was to be greeted personally by the British Prime Minister following his work with the country’s flood relief efforts. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad, from Southfields, London, finally met David Cameron on Monday 7th April at 10 Downing Street. After picking up the ‘Flood Hero’ award, alongside four other volunteers, live on ITV’s Daybreak, and receiving a cheque of £5,000 by Sir Richard Branson to go towards his chosen charity, Zafar was invited to the historic home of British politics. During his half-term holidays in February, the enthusiastic volunteer joined others from Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), a UK youth charity, to

assist with the wider flood relief efforts being carried out across the country, including the Staines, Chertsey, and Somerset areas. Zafar spent almost every day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Speaking before he finally met Mr Cameron, he said: “I'm a bit nervous about attending the reception, but at the same time very excited to meet the Prime Minister. “Young people are often highlighted for all sorts of negative reasons, but I would like to assure the Prime Minister that there are many positive young Brits who enjoy helping others on a daily basis.” He added: “I don't consider what I did to be special, but simply fulfilment of my religious duty as a British Muslim to serve my country. “I would like to thank ITV for

whether they are from our own community, the local residents, the Army or the tremendous Sikh volunteers who worked tirelessly. “The reason I nominated Zafar was because of his selfless dedication and the fact that he showed no hesitation in giving up his school holidays to help others. “I’m very proud that he got through as there were over 120 nominations across the country. I think he is a great representative for

young people across the UK.” Zafar’s volunteering efforts do not stop here as he is already looking forward to raise more money to assist with the massive clean-up required up and down the country. Visitors have the chance to enjoy and take an unforgettable journey through seven major themes: Faiths & Festivals; Trade & War; Fashion & Style; Music, Dance, Theatre & Film; Eating Out & Eating In and Faith in Focus. Featuring in all of the themes will be a variety of interesting and diverse objects and pieces taken from the Leeds Museum and Galleries collections and also a wide range of donations from the Asian community, partners and city universities. The displays will include a friendly Chinese New Year tiger puppet, a model of the Golden Temple at Amritsar, a huge Chinese temple gong and two painted marble statues, of the Hindu deities Krishna and Radha, purchased from Leeds Hindu Temple. Hello Kitty makes an appearance and some old fashioned rag dolls from Gujarat. As part of the first Faith in Focus, the many facets of Hinduism will also be showcased and celebrated. Janan launches new Birmingham store Whistle while you work T he case of Clyde & Co LLP and Morris -v- Van Winkelhof considers the important question of whether or not a member of a limited liability partnership (“LLP”) can be a worker within the meaning of the Employment Rights Act 1996. The Claimant in this case, Mrs Van Winkelhof, was a member of the law firm Clyde & Co. Upon joining Clyde & Co, the Claimant signed a Deed of Adherence stating that she would devote her full time and attention to the business and would be faithful to the partnership. It is common ground in the claim that the Claimant was recruited into Clyde & Co as a result of her favourable connections in the African legal market. Therefore, following her recruitment into Clyde & Co, she worked predominately in Tanzania in order to maintain her relationship with Ako Law, a Tanzanian law firm, which then became an associate firm of Clyde & Co. On 23 November 2010 the Claimant alleged that the Managing Partner of Ako Law was accepting bribes to secure work and control the outcome of cases and also that he was engaged in money laundering. Two days after the above report was made, the Claimant was dismissed from Ako Law. The following day she was suspended from Clyde & Co and was later dismissed on 13 January 2011. She alleged her dismissal was unfair on two grounds: 1. She was being subjected to detrimental treatment as a result of making a protected disclosure regarding the activities of the Managing Partner of

Ako Law. In other words she had ‘blown the whistle’ on unacceptable conduct and was dismissed as a result; and 2. She was subject to unlawful sex discrimination as a male partner would not have been treated the same way and/or that her dismissal related to the fact that she had recently told Clyde & Co that she was pregnant. The claim is hotly contested by Clyde & Co, who allege that Mrs Van Winkelhof is not a ‘worker’ within the meaning of the Employment Rights Act 1996. She cannot therefore rely on the ‘whistle blowing’ legislation which is designed to afford protection to workers. At the first Hearing the Employment Tribunal held that the Claimant was not a worker and was not therefore able to pursue her claim for whistle blowing. However, the Employment Appeal Tribunal reversed that decision on the basis that the Claimant held a subordinate position in the firm. The Court of Appeal disagreed and ruled that the Claimant was not a worker. The Claimant was granted permission to appeal to the Supreme Court and the decision is currently awaited. The Claimant’s argument is that a member of an LLP should be a worker to allow them to make disclosures about unacceptable conduct without fear of reprisal. If the Supreme Court agrees the case will be remitted to the Employment Tribunal to be heard again. We at Blacks can provide assistance on all types of employment disputes. At one time they were the most dominant handset in the phone business, yet as of Friday 25th April, Nokia’s former product line is now in the possession of Microsoft following the completion of their sales deal. The cost of the handset business is likely to have been around £4.5billion as Microsoft takeover the Nokia branch, with two factories, in India and Korea, being left out of the deal. Nokia said that due to an ongoing tax dispute with Indian authorities, it would operate the Chennai factory as a contract manufacturing unit for Microsoft. It also said it will close a plant in Masan, Korea, which about 200 staff currently work at. Nokia added its board of directors was due to meet early next week in relation to the company's strategy assessment as it looks towards an unknown future. A media report released earlier on Friday said Nokia would outline its new strategy on Tuesday 29th April along with its first-quarter results, and that it would also nominate Rajeev Suri, the head of NSN, as the new group CEO. British police will ask women to help persuade young people not to go out to fight in Syria, in a new campaign to stem an exodus which authorities fear could breed militants at home. Hundreds of Britons are thought to have flown out to join rebels fighting the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Senior police officers and security chiefs have said they are worried the fighters could return to the UK radicalised by hardline Islamists and carry out attacks on British soil. Britain's counter-terrorism police said they were going to appeal to from "affected women communities". "We are increasingly concerned about the numbers of young people who have or are intending ... to join the conflict," Helen Ball, National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said in a statement ahead of Thursday's launch. "We want to ensure that people, particularly women, who are concerned about their loved ones are given enough information about

what they can do to prevent this from happening." Last week, a teenager from southern England was killed fighting in Syria. Police said anyone who did make it back home risked arrest. About 40 people have been detained in the first three months of this year, compared to 25 during the whole of 2013. Ball said they recognised that not all who went to Syria did so to fight, and said the campaign aimed to inform people how they could help those in need in Syria "safely and legally". Andrew Parker, the Director General of MI5's domestic spy agency, said in October a growing proportion of his casework involved Syria, "mostly concerning individuals from the UK who have travelled to fight there or who aspire to do so". Parker led MI5's response to the 2005 suicide bomb attacks on London which killed 52 civilians. Some of the bombers are thought to have received training in al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Report on young offenders institution shows squalid and dirty environment along with bullying & cannabis use A damning report into a young offenders institute near Wolverhampton has found violence levels too high, inefficient security and drug usage among inmates three times above target. Chief Inspector of Prisons Nick Hardwick said inspectors in November uncovered the worst overall findings since he took up his post in July 2010. Prison bosses said a new governor had been appointed to address concerns. Mr Hardwick said Brinsford, which is next to two prisons Oakwood and Featherstone - and holds young men aged between 18 and 21, had deteriorated in almost all respects since its last inspection in 2012. "This is an establishment that needs significant improvement," he said. "When we spoke to staff and managers they were aware of the problems but seemed overwhelmed, and they lacked a plan or the determination to begin to get to grips with what needed doing." The report said structures to tackle bullying "lacked rigour" and said there was insufficient work or activity for inmates. It highlighted "squalid" and "dirty" cells "unfit for occupation", covered in graffiti with window panes missing. Almost 12 per cent of inmates tested positive for cannabis, almost

three times higher than the target of 4.5 per cent. But it praised health services and said they were "probably the best feature of the institution". Mr Hardwick said: "We found so much wrong with Brinsford that it is going to take time to improve, but stronger leadership and capability

I am confident that when inspectors return they will see a much improved establishment.” However, Frances Crook, the chief executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said Brinsford should be immediately closed. “The inspection of Brinsford prison reveals an unsafe, ineffective and violent institution that should be immediately closed," a statement said. “Rather than locking up teenagers in squalid conditions, letting some out of their cells for just ten minutes a day, the government needs to start to reconsider its policy of wasting public funds and young people's lives behind bars.”

A sacked doctor from Coventry says he was ‘absolutely relieved’ after a tribunal ruled that he had been unfairly sacked after raising concerns about patient safety. Dr Raj Mattu, 54, was sacked from his role at the University of Coventry Hospital more than three years ago. After expressing concerns over the wellbeing of two patients, who had died in crowded bays at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry, Employment Judge Pauline Hughes ruled Dr Mattu was subject to ‘many detriments’ by the trust as a consequence of being a whistleblower. He had claimed that five patients being allocated to four-bed bays in December 1999, prevented vital equipment being used to save the life of a 35-year-old man, and publicly announced his views in September 2001. He was suspended less than six months after the incident on the charges of bullying a junior doctor before, five years later, in July 2007, he was allowed back to work and later cleared of any bullying charges in March 2009.

However, less than one year on he was sacked by the hospital trust in an incident which Judge Hughes said Dr Mattu ‘did not cause or contribute to’. Dr Mattu had claimed that the Trust relieved him of his duties purely because of his whistleblowing and that, for more

Duchess of Cornwall ‘devastated’ following brother’s death

Mark Shand, the brother-in-law of Prince Charles, died in a New York hospital on Wednesday after suffering a serious head injury in a fall outside a club following a charity event. Shand, 62, was the younger brother of Camilla Parker Bowles, who became the Duchess of Cornwall as the second wife of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles. The royal couple confirmed the death in a statement, saying ‘family members are utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss.’ “Mark Shand was a man of extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist whose incredible work through the Elephant Family and beyond remained his focus right up until his death,” the statement said. He was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening after injuring his head. Shand, who was also a travel writer, established the Elephant Family charity in 2002 to save the endangered Asian elephant from extinction in the wild. His award-winning 1996 book, ‘Queen of the Elephants,’ was made into a documentary film.

Religions come together after Mosque chairman’s death

One of Birmingham’s most respected humanitarians sadly passed away last week and more than 4,000 people gathered to mourn his death. Leaders from Birmingham’s Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist communities all paid tribute to Dr Mohammed Naseem who died aged 90. Chairman and figurehead for Birmingham Central Mosque, Dr Naseem was a wellrespected man across all faiths and helped establish the Birmingham Faith Leaders’ Group. His proactive life in the community was devoted to interfaith relations and helping Birmingham’s diverse culture live together as one. Speaking at his funeral, Dr Naseem’s younger brother, Naeem Tahar, who travelled from Pakistan for the service, gave his tribute to his sibling.

Tauheedul Islam Girls School, in Blackburn, received a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors who said the school was in the country’s top one per cent for improving students’ outcomes. Inspectors said the school was led by a ‘strong sense of moral purpose’ and praised its focus on helping the less fortunate. Lead inspector Joan McKenna said the academic achievement in school was also of an incredibly high standard. She said: “Students achieve exceptionally well in this school. The rates of progress made by all groups of students are truly impressive across all subjects. “Because of the outstanding progress, students reach high standards. GCSE results are consistently significantly above the national average in all subjects.” The school has been in the top one per cent of schools in the country for the extent to which it improved students’ outcomes for

the last three years. Ms McKenna added: “Students are highly motivated and enthusiastic about their learning.” She said the school’s spiritual focus was a successful element. She said: “Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is of an exceedingly high order because it is regarded as extremely important by leaders and its promotion is integral to the life of the school. “It is the framework within which all else takes place and there are very many examples of students’ outstanding outcomes in these areas. They act to help those less fortunate than they are and have welldeveloped views on a wide range of ethical and moral issues.” Principal Hamid Patel welcomed the report. He said: “Having an Ofsted inspection is a stressful experience but it was most positive. The inspectors were very impressed and we are proud of our school and what we have achieved.”

A mother and her three children, who were killed in an arson attack last year, were the victims of a mistaken crime which was supposed to be targeted at the family’s neighbour, a court has been told. Shehnila Taufiq, along with

her 19-year-old daughter Zainab, and sons Bilal, 17, and Jamal, 15, all died in the blaze at their family home in Leicester in September 2013. Hours earlier, a fitness coach, called Antoin Akpom, was fatally stabbed in the city and the resulting fire was allegedly started by an eight-strong gang who were seeking revenge for their friend. Petrol was mistakenly poured through Ms Taufiq’s letterbox, in Wood Hill, Leicester, before being set ablaze,

with the intended recipient’s home two doors further down. The Taufiq family had ‘no connection’ with that attack, said Richard Latham QC, counsel for the prosecution. Asian Hornet spotted in UK? Foreign invaders could be coming across the channel A Plymouth resident has captured pictures of what he believes could be the first sighting of an Asian Hornet in the UK. The insects, which have spread throughout France since arriving in the country in pottery from China in 2004, are likely to come across the British Channel eventually and can grow up to 5cm in length. In France, six people have died from their stings, and their arrival in the UK is expected at some point in the near future. Speaking to the Plymouth Herald, local resident, LJ Marley said he spotted one on his garden fence and reported it to the environment agency. He said: “On return to my home address in Efford I was alerted to this hornet by the shrieks of my friend. “I got out of the car, completely oblivious to what was on the fence. My friend gasped and shrieked and pointed behind me. “As I turned, I saw this hornet on the fence. After getting a little closer with extreme caution, I Googled the recent article the Herald wrote and also searched images online. I thought that this was the hornet that people of Plymouth have been warned about. “I took these shots of the hornet, which was eating the wood on this fence. As you can see in the picture and witness over the period of the next hour or so as I watched the hornet fly away and return, it was eating the wood in various places. “I think it's really important to let our locals know of insects like this and to warn children whilst in good weather that these insects must be left well alone if sighted. “I telephoned Plymouth City Council to make them aware of this sighting, but the lady I spoke with in their environmental department didn't seem interested.”

Americans killed in Kabul hospital

Three Americans were killed on Thursday when a security guard opened fire at a Kabul hospital funded by a U.S. Christian charity, the latest in a spate of attacks on foreign civilians in Afghanistan. Attacks on security forces, Afghan civilians and Westerners have been on the rise since the beginning of the year as Western forces prepare to leave the country and Afghans choose a new president. “"We can confirm three Americans were killed,” said a U.S. Embassy official, without providing further details. Pakistan: Fighter jets target militant hideouts This week, the Pakistan Army said that its fighter jets have pounded suspected militant hideouts near the Afghan border in response to a spate of attacks around the country. In the first aerial operation against Taliban insurgents in two months, the operation came despite efforts by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government to engage the Taliban in peace talks. Years of fighting with an insurgency seeking to topple the democratically elected government in the capital Islamabad has been a challenge for the Pakistani government.

"Terrorist hideouts were engaged by fighter jets in Khyber agency early (in the) morning today," the army's press wing said in a text message sent to media. It said it was a response to a number of recent attacks against police and civilians in Islamabad and Peshawar, a volatile Pakistani city near the Khyber tribal agency. A senior military official in Peshawar said the operation has started and were still under way. "After the jets, Pakistan army ground forces also launched operations in the area," he said. Another military official said at

least 15 militants were killed, but there was no official confirmation. Recently the Pakistani Taliban - a loose alliance of militant groups separate from but allied to the Afghan Taliban - formally ended a 40-day ceasefire but attempts to resume talks have continued nonetheless. Representatives of both sides met in Islamabad, agreeing to pave the way for the next round of negotiations aimed at finding a compromise that would convince the Taliban to lay down their weapons.

A drunk passenger on a Virgin Australia plane was arrested at Bali airport after triggering a hijack alert when he attempted to enter the cockpit, airline and Indonesian officials said on Friday. National police spokesman Suhardi Alius said the passenger, named as Matt Lockley, had been arrested over the incident after he allegedly hammered at the cockpit door forcing the pilot to send a mayday message. “This is no hijacking, this is a miscommunication,” said Heru Sudjatmiko, a Virgin Australia official on the Indonesian resort island. “What happened was there was a drunk person... too much alcohol consumption caused him to act aggressively. “There was a drunk passenger,

Syria announces presidential election As reports continue from across the globe of bloodshed and chaos in Syria, the government has announced it will hold presidential elections on June 3rd. Syria’s constitutional court will begin to accept presidential nominations from Tuesday April 29th said Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad alLaham. Around 100,000 people, including civilians have been killed over the violence during the three-year Syrian civil war, which has pit government forces against rebels trying to end the Assad family's four-decade rule. Many are speculative and say they are unclear whether the elections will yield any major change in Syria. The new elections may not necessarily mean regime change. After President Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father in 2000, he won a second term unopposed in 2007.

The political uprising against al-Assad's regime began in Daraa province in 2011. As the government announced the election date, opposition activists reported more barrel bombs raining down on neighbourhoods across Syria. In addition to the estimated death tolls, tens of thousands of protesters, students, liberal activists and human rights advocates have been imprisoned and there are reports of widespread torture and terror in state prisons. International organisations have accused both government and opposition forces of severe human rights violations. More than four million Syrians have been displaced, more than three million Syrians fled the country and became refugees, and millions more were left in poor living conditions with shortage of food and drinking water.

Lawsuit claims FBI use ‘No-flylist’ to coerce Muslims into informing A recently filed case on behalf of four American Muslims in a US district of New York, has accused the US attorney general, Eric Holder, the FBI director, James Comey, the homeland security secretary, Jeh Johnson, and two dozen FBI agents of creating an atmosphere where innocent Muslims are forbidden from flying. The motive apparently was so that the FBI can use this as leverage to get them to snitch on their communities. In recent years Muslim community leaders in the US have

stated that they feel law enforcement at times considers them a target. Material demonising Muslims and Islam has been present in FBI counter-terrorism training, which the bureau has conceded was inappropriate. The New York police department recently shut down a unit tasked with spying on Muslim businesses, mosques and community centres in New York and New Jersey. The lawsuit seeks not only the plaintiffs’ removal from the no-fly

list but also the establishment of a more robust legal mechanism to contest placement upon it. “This policy and set of practices by the FBI is part of a much broader set of policies that reflect overpolicing in Muslim-American communities,” said Diala Shamas, one of the lawyers for the four plaintiffs. The no-fly list is among the most opaque post-9/11 measures. It is maintained by the FBI and implemented at airports by the Department of Homeland Security. Few know they’ve been placed

on it, and those who do face a complicated redress process to have themselves removed. The new lawsuit alleges that the opacity contributes to watchlist abuse. According to the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Centre, which maintains the list, there were approximately 16,000 people, fewer than 500 of them Americans, on the no-fly list as of September 2011. A larger pool of data that feeds the no-fly list and other government watchlists, known as the Terrorist Screening Database, contemporaneously contained

records of 420,000 people. Famously it included Nelson Mandela until 2008. The government’s policy is to not to confirm or deny someone’s placement upon a watchlist. Several earlier lawsuits have attempted to get people off the nofly list. In February Rahinah Ibrahim became the first since 9/11 to win such a case, after demonstrating that the FBI adder her name by mistake. She had been unable to fly since 2004.

Woman donates kidney then kills herself

A 28-year-old woman in eastern India is reported to have committed suicide in what appears to be a case of dowry death. According to reports, Poonam Devi, mother of two, from Hazaribagh district in the state of Jharkhand, allegedly set herself on fire on 16 April. She died as a result of her burn injuries at a hospital in the state capital Ranchi a week later. District superintendent of police, Manoj Kaushik, said: "I have taken up the matter and action will be taken against the guilty after investigation." Devi donated one of her kidneys to her ailing husband Sudama Giri in a dowry deal with her inlaws about six months ago.

Devi's parents gave Rs 1.31 lakh (approximately £1,280) in dowry at the time of her marriage to Giri in 2006. But, according to Devi's family, her in-laws had been a constant nag asking for another Rs 25,000 as dowry from her father. They were even torturing Devi for money, according to an FIR report filed by Devi's father. Devi's in-laws reportedly put it in writing that they would treat her well if she donated her kidney for their son. Devi eventually agreed and donated a kidney to her husband. However, the pestering for dowry money and torture continued, Devi's father alleged in his FIR report. Police are yet to make any arrests in the case.

Five paramilitary soldiers and three polling officials carrying voting machines were killed in the attack, Gupta said. Suspected rebels also fatally shot an Indian poll official and

wounded four other people in an attack on another bus in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir in the north. In the highly disputed Himalayan territory, protestors threw rocks at the polling station, whilst shouting ‘Down with India’ at people registering their say. More than 800million people are able to vote in the world’s second most populous country with the process taking six weeks to undertake before the final results are expected to be heard on 16th May. Millions have already cast their vote across 11 states, helping to determine 117 parliamentary seats, including Maharashtra, of which

recognised by Land Rover as a potentially strong market for its new premium hybrids, whilst the long wheelbase design is identified as best suiting Chinese customers’ preferences for luxury and

spaciousness. Global order books will open in May and first deliveries to customers in China are expected from the end of the year. In 2013. A fleet of Range Rover Hybrids proved their durability and all-terrain capability on a gruelling 16,000km route from the Land Rover factory in Solihull, across central Asia to the Mumbai headquarters of Tata, Land Rover’s parent company. After the journey, the vehicles were stripped down and scrutinised by Land Rover engineers to improve understanding of how the designs and technologies can be fine-tuned. The Range Rover Hybrid powertrain combines Land Rover’s 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor, integrated with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. The system allows the driver to select from three different drive modes to maximise

performance or efficiency, and is capable of delivering 26 per cent lower CO2 emissions (169g/km) and 6.4 l/100 km (44.1mpg). Installing the hybrid diesel-electric powertrain in the Range Rover Long Wheelbase has not compromised space, or the driving experience. The long wheelbase offers the benefits of an additional legroom for rear seat passengers and, with the option of the executive seating package, an impressive increase in the rear seat angle of recline to 17 degrees. The hybrid system uses the same proven Terrain Response® system and all-wheel drive technology deployed in the petrol and dieselpowered models. Wading depth capability is undiminished at a classleading 900mm. The complete system, including a lithium ion battery pack, inverter and electric motor, weighs less than 120kg. The electric motor produces 170Nm

torque and operates to boost acceleration when required, and to drive the vehicle in EV (electric vehicle) Mode. The motor also acts as a generator, harvesting kinetic energy through regenerative braking, charging the battery when the vehicle is slowing. In EV mode the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 30mph (48km/h) for a range of up to one mile (1.6km) before the diesel engine seamlessly restarts. Together, output of the diesel engine and electric motor is 340PS at 4,000rpm and a class-leading 700Nm torque between 1,500-3,000rpm, delivering performance on a par with the SDV8 engine. The version to be marketed in China is technically identical to that sold elsewhere, except for a change to the exhaust system to take into account the different local emissions standards. YOUNG DRIVERS: Overconfidence and inexperience puts lives on the line Seventy-one per cent of young drivers think they are better than the average driver, according to survey by Vision Critical and road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Yet they are 2.5 times more likely to be involved in a serious crash. Britain's most confident young drivers are in Northern Ireland where 87 per cent think they are better than average, yet they make up 26 per cent of those involved in crashes.2 Britain's least confident young drivers are from Wales where 56 per cent think they are better than average. Contrary to the confidence of younger drivers, official figures show that, while 8 per cent of drivers are under 25, they account for 22 per cent of drivers involved in serious injury and fatal crashes. They also drive, on average, about half the distance of older drivers each year. Nearly a quarter of all car drivers (133 out of 542 drivers) who died in 2012 were young drivers themselves. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "A year ago the government committed itself to producing a green paper to tackle the safety of young drivers which has yet to be published." "Our whole system of learning to drive must be overhauled to provide safe exposure to a wider range of traffic situations, but also the chance to discuss attitudes and risks. New drivers feel invulnerable and it is the job of government, training providers, insurers, charities and parents and carers to ensure they have the best training to reduce risk to themselves and others." Like every McLaren road car, a carbon fibre MonoCell sits at the core of the 650S. Stiff, strong and incredibly light, the MonoCell provides a solid platform for optimum chassis dynamics, ultraresponsive steering and exceptional ride comfort. Three adaptive chassis modes

specially tuned for the 650S exploit this duality: select Track and you’ll feel hardwired to the road surface; switch to Normal and you’ll be almost entirely isolated from it. Positioned behind you for

optimum weight distribution and thrilling dynamics, the acclaimed M838T engine combines 3.8 litres and twinturbocharging technology to produce an astonishing 650PS at 7250rpm, while 95% of its 678Nm is spread from 3000-

7000rpm. That means the 650S revs like a racing car but retains low-speed flexibility. This remarkable engine sends its power to the 650S’s rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with near instantaneous gearshifts. Pull the rocker shift paddle at full throttle and a new ‘inertia push’ function harnesses the engine’s torque for a feeling of positive acceleration throughout the shift. Change gear at part throttle and a fuelcut punctuates the transition, adding an audible crispness. Whereas the Automatic mode ensures silky smooth shifts whatever your speed. The 650S is priced at just under £170,000 and is available as both a coupe and a Spider convertible, which costs £20,000 more than the old 12C but comes with more equipment as standard, so McLaren say it’s better value.

With just under 100 days to go until the XX Commonwealth Games begins in Glasgow, Leeds have announced their six Batonbearers selected to carry the Queen’s Baton when it arrives in the city. Amongst them is 25-year-old powerlifter, Ali Jawad, who will act as one of the city’s representatives when the Queen’s Baton Relay tours Leeds on the 12th June, before the games kick off in July. Ali, who suffers from the

incurable Crohns disease, has most recently clinched a World Championship title in Dubai earlier this month and competed as part of Team GB’s Paralympic team. As a Batonbearer, the Bramley resident, originally from Lebanon, will take the baton to local landmarks and special events to celebrate the countdown to Glasgow 2014. He said it was an ‘extremely proud’ moment when he got told he had been selected and now hopes to go on and win Gold at the Commonwealth games himself. “I got told that I had been selected to be a Batonbearer around

the time of the World Championships earlier this month (6th April),” he said. “It is a real honour for me because I hope to be representing England at the Commonwealth Games later this year. “My final qualifier is next month in Coventry and if successful I will then go on to represent the country which will be fantastic. “Being one of the city’s Batonbearers is something which makes me very proud.” It isn’t the first time that Ali has been selected as a representative of major athletic games having been a torch bearer in London for the

Beijing Olympics. On that occasion, the powerlifter says the media coverage was ‘intense’ yet insists that this year’s Leeds appearance has a special sentimental meaning attached to it. He added: “The one in Downing Street was massive due to the media attention and I had just qualified for my first Paralympics so everything was huge. It was probably the most important leg of the torch relay so that was a great experience. “This Leeds baton is very special to me because it is the Leeds community which has been behind me from day one and helped me get to where I am today.

“They have been so supportive over the years and I have them to thank for much of my success.” Ali has represented ParalympicsGB in powerlifting at Commonwealth, European, World and Paralympic Games, most notably the 2012 Paralympics. The highlight of his career was gold at the Asian Open in 2013, with a new European and World record, becoming world ranked number one. Throughout his life he has come through adversity and dreams of one day becoming the first Crohns sufferer to win Gold at any Olympics or Paralympics.

Tae Kwon Do ‘chief’ is the ‘All Styles Martial Arts Champion’ Back page story continued “It was a great achievement to come away with the medals and I was so proud of the whole club,” Zeeshan said. “It was great to see such a high level of performance from our team and everybody competed to the best of their ability in every contest.” The 28-year-old Tae Kwon Do instructor was competing on behalf of the Huddersfield-based Tae KwonDo Association of Great Britain (T.A.G.B) club, and was delighted to see his students excel in the tournament as well. On top of the his own medals haul, members of the T.A.G.B class also came away with gold, silver and bronze medals, highlighting the progress the local team has made in recent years. The club also entered a separate group into the Adult Black Belt Team Event, which comprised of Zeeshan and two of his students, competing in full contact.

Taking on ‘Team Fightclub’, the T.A.G.B team had to settle for a draw in a thrilling encounter with Zeeshan performing a knockout punch to his opponent. Despite the close-call, the referee had to make a decision and awarded the win to Team Fightclub, yet it was the experience of competing at the highest level which Zeeshan says he, and his team, will benefit from most. He said: “Fighting in full contact was a tough experience and was certainly an eye opener to me in regard to the difference between semi contact and full contact competition. “We were definitely going for the gold in every contest yet if each of our team members walked away knowing they have been the best they can be, they should be very proud.” Huddersfield’s T.A.G.B classes train on Mondays and Wednesdays, between 6.30pm and7.30pm at the Highfields Community Centre, Cemetery Road. England’s top football division is likely to welcome a host of new faces over the summer yet one player who has already booked his place in the top flight is Burnley’s very own Waqas Azam. Following the Clarets’ promotion last weekend, the 17year-old defender will be one of the very few Asian footballers registered in the Premier League next season. His agent, Shehneela Ahmed, who became the world’s first Asian female football agent recognised by the FA last year, said she was delighted to see one of her clients progress so quickly in the sport.

Speaking previously, Ms Ahmed had stated that her long term ambition was to increase the number of Asian footballers in the top division and with Burnley’s confirmed promotion; it seems her targets are beginning to be met well ahead of schedule. She said: “Waqas [Azam] has a great future which lies ahead of him and will be a great role model for Asian youngsters across UK.” Azam, who was born and raised in Burnley, is just one of Ms Ahmed’s growing list of clients and she says she has enjoyed paving her career path since leaving her last profession. “It’s a challenge for me but I do look forward to it,” she said. “To date I have been dealing with hardcore criminals so what

can be so difficult when it comes to dealing with footballers, managers and agents. I have to start from somewhere.” The female football agent added her belief that training programmes across the UK, like the one at Burnley, are currently offering young and aspiring footballers a greater chance of breaking into the professional game. She said: “One must realise that youth development programmes are an important stepping stone to one day playing professionally. “Talent alone is no longer enough. Desire and commitment are the most important attributes for young footballers - if you are good enough, you are good enough and you will make it. “In my last few visits to football clubs and academies, I have seen some great young players, their touch and control is impressive. “I have enjoyed the fact that they are all so keen to learn and experiment. With myself making my presence, I hope that visits like this further inspires these youngsters to be great. “I think the best way to motivate young football players is through positive reinforcement, incentives and rewards that motivate them to do the things you want them to do.” With Waqas Azam making inroads for Asian footballers across the country, and Shehneela Ahmed by his side, the prospect of having more Asian stars compete in England’s top flight in the future could well and truly be a reality.

Force India continue fantastic start to 2014 season

‘You’re next’ With less than a fortnight to go until Amir Khan makes his welterweight debut in Vegas, the Bolton boxer is still hopeful of a bout with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather before the end of the year. Khan, who faces Puerto Rico’s Luis Collazo on the 3rd May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, will be competing on the undercard of Mayweather’s contest with Marcos Maidana. The former world champion insists that his aim is to headline the next big blockbuster and he has only one opponent in mind. “Fans know my bout is genuinely competitive,” he said. “They know I am willing to face anyone at any time and that I don't swerve anything. “By showing my skill and strengths, I believe it can force Mayweather to finally fight me near the end of his career because it will be a fight that fans call for.” The 27-year-old boxer was left disappointed and frustrated earlier this year after the American opted to fight Maidana over himself despite winning a fans poll. Yet now, Khan says he will still steal the show in May and show the world who should really be headlining the ‘must-see’ night of boxing. “I want the world to see me putting the pressure on with a good performance. I want to steal the show,” Khan said. “With the styles me and Collazo have, we can definitely do that because both of us will come to fight and it's a genuine bout that can go either way if I am not at the top of my game.” Despite Khan’s impressive history, holding world titles and Olympic Gold, Collazo is determined to prove that there is more to the welterweight division than just Mayweather. “Styles make fights,” he said. “He's moving up to the welterweight division and it's different from 140pounders. “Zab [Juddah] (who Khan has beaten in the past) is really a 140pounder. He's not a natural welterweight and although Amir Khan is big in size let's see how he does in the welterweight division. “I'm going to welcome him with open arms. I'm going to welcome him to the welterweight division come 3rd May.”

After picking up just 77 points throughout the whole of the 2013 Formula One campaign, Force India’s new look team have been the surprise package of 2014, with the team currently sat in third place in the constructors standings. An amazing start to Nico Hulkenberg’s Force India career has seen him clinch a point’s finish in every race, with last weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix proving to be no exception, coming home in sixth place. Teammate, Sergio Perez, picked up two points after another convincing display off the back of his podium finish in Malaysia earlier this month. The side have now amassed a huge total of 54 points after just four races and look set to smash their record points tally for a single season. “Finishing in sixth and bringing both cars home in the points again was a very positive result for the team,” the German Hulkenberg said. “It was actually a pretty straightforward race for me after we got in front of Massa: I had to manage my tyres, my pace and

avoid mistakes, and it only got tricky at the end when Bottas was getting a bit closer. “We have beaten all other customer Mercedes cars, which are our main competition at the moment, but we have also seen some other teams up their game so we will need to keep pushing.” Perez, who started the race way back in 16th position on the grid, finished in ninth spot and says the whole team is now focussed on maintaining their impressive form in Barcelona in May. “It was not easy to overtake today, even the cars on a different strategy, so I think ninth place was the maximum,” he said. “It means I’ve scored points in three out of four races, but I was hoping for more today after the weekend we had in Bahrain. “It’s also clear that all the teams around us are finding pace so we have to keep working hard to be ready for Barcelona.” The Barcelona Grand Prix will take place on 11th May, with home-country favourite, Fernando Alonso, looking to repeat last year’s success and come away with a first place finish.

A local martial arts ace picked up a prestigious Gold medal last weekend as he led by example for his students at the national championships. Zeeshan Zafar, from Bradford, clinched the top accolade in his weight division at the UK All Style Martial Arts Championships held in Dewsbury Sports Centre. Competing in the 75kg black belt individual sparring event, Zeeshan was awarded the Gold medal for his outstanding efforts and performance, subsequently also picking up the title of All Styles Martial Arts Champion. The tournament was open to all styles meaning a vast variety of martial arts fighters from across the UK were on display from karate, kickboxing, kung-fu and MMA.
