The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Joan Semmel: A Lucid Eye
Well known for the uncompromising feminist tone of her early work, Joan Semmel has turned her attention over the past decade to the process of image making. Photography has played a central role in Semmel’s work since she decided to represent the figure in the early 1970s. However, Semmel’s use of photography has often escaped the viewer whose attention focuses on the depicted image. In 2005, Semmel began to afford the viewer a glimpse into her method by aiming the camera towards a mirror, thus capturing the artist in the process of composing the image. Lately, using the camera and mirrors, Semmel has created a haunting series of self-portraits that evoke the passage of time. Organized by Antonio Sergio Bessa. 2

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Honey, I Rearranged the Collection…
Locust
Ave
Created in 1986, the Bronx Museum Permanent Collection has assembled over the years a remarkable group of artworks that convey not only personal narratives but also incisive insights onto contemporary life. For this exhibition, we took inspiration from Allen Ruppersberg’s ongoing series Honey, I rearranged the Collection initiated in 2000 and that puts in check the role of institutions, curators and collectors as the bearers of tradition and arbiters of taste. Overlaying different traditions, styles, and narratives, Honey, I rearranged the Collection presents an idea of museum as a restless play of combination.

Organic Abstracts at Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum
Produced by the West Harlem Art Fund in partnership with Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and the City of New York Parks & Recreation Department for Armory Week 2013. The featured artist is Dianne Smith, a native New Yorker who was born and raised in the Bronx but now lives in Harlem. The installation, comprised of two sculptures, showcases a minimalist approach to abstract art, scaled large and reminiscent of works by Henry Moore who incorporated them into the local landscape and was heavily influenced by non-Western art. The Couple will be two beautifully androgynous heads approximately twenty feet wide and ten feet tall at the highest point. The heads will rest on one another and be secured on to a rectangular base. Flying High is a site-specific installation constructed out of brown butcher paper. The paper may be crunched, crumpled, rolled, twisted, interlocked, woven and manipulated, hanging between two trees. Time: noon – 5PM Access: The Bronx Trolley will be making round trips to the museum leaving Piers 92/94 at 1pm and 3:45 pm Registration for trolley is required RSVP: (718) 885-1461 info@bpmm.org Location: Bartow-Pell Mansion, 895 Shore Road, Bronx, NY 10464 Websites: westharlemartfund.wordpress.com bpmm.org

Chimera
What are social implications of becoming colorblind? For SOHO Gallery night Woolfalk will activate her installation at Third Streaming with a performance that explores what it means to become colorblind for a society of fictional women called the Empathics. The material culture and biology of the Empathics presented in the exhibition Chimera is the synthesis of diverse sources. Textilebased sculptures, paintings, prints, and installation combine Native American artifacts, Japanese kimono fabrics, West African textiles and regalia, Brazilian Carnaval and bumba-meu-boi costumes, Buddhist Thangka paintings, European illuminated manuscripts, and botanical illustration. This Empathic symbolism points to how distinct beings and material intermingle, impact one another, and can emerge fused and re-imagined. This wondrous process of hybridization inadvertently causes the Empathics

TEN10 Studios Presents Aubrey Roemer: Irradiare & Obnubilare (To Shine & To Darken)
A mixture of painting, photography, and sculpture, this show reflects on the depth and expanse of the human condition - the place where darkness hails to light and the multitude of shades in between. Through stark and harrowing portraits of death row inmates, illuminated paintings of exotic dancers, and depictions of female actors messily and distortedly painted through the various stages of crying, Roemer challenges the viewer’s empathy towards humanity. Other works include lone houses, abandons of chromatic pine tree rows, sinisterly abstract flower bushels, and skeletons. These images are at once familiar and reeking of nostalgia, yet are quietly unsettling in their abject content. Time: 6:30PM – 9:30PM Access: Free and open to the public RSVP: info@ten10studios.com or VIP Card at door Location: 10-10 47th Road, Long Island City Website: ten10studios.com

Retuning Reality
As expressed by its title, Retuning Reality is a group exhibition featuring six artists from across North America who share the common interest of tweaking reality. The featured artists are painters Alex Bierk, Stephanie Buer, Kevin Peterson and Jeff Ramirez, sculptor Richard Haden and mixed media artist Jason A. Maas. Each artist’s approach to art making is steeped in tradition but the way they see, interpret and communicate their respective disciplines transcends the expected pictorial response thereby creating a new and dynamic visual lexicon steeped in reality. Time: 11AM – 6PM Access: Open to the public Location: Lyons Wier Gallery 542 West 24th Street Website: lyonswiergallery.com 5

ARTUPDATE
The Book Lovers, curated by David Maroto and Joanna Zielińska, is a systematic attempt to study the phenomenon of artist novels. An investigation of the creative consequences when artists choose the novel as a medium is the core of this long-term project and research. For an increasing number of artists, the novel is becoming a means to generate new art objects in the scope of a multidisciplinary practice. A collection of novels written by artists and a parallel online database are available for public perusal in a Reading Room, together with a selection of artworks that are inextricably linked to some of the novels. Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (2nd Floor) will be open for tours; on view in Blackburn 20|20 (5th Floor), Silhouette, curated by Bill Carroll, featuring the work of over 50 artists including Donald Baechler, David Humphrey, Philip Taaffe, and Kara Walker. Time: 1PM - 6PM Access: Open to the public Location: 323 West 39th Street (between 8th and 9th avenues) Website: efanyc.org

The World’s First Tumblr Art Symposium
Hyperallergenic and Tumblr have joined forces to present “The World’s First Tumblr Art Symposium.” Part discussion, part exhibition, and a whole lot of fun. In addition to commissioning essays on Tumblr as an evolving medium for art, the event will feature an exhibition titled “Walking into the Dashboard,” and it will function as a forum for work to be discussed, shared, uploaded, and critiqued. We’ll have drinks, DJ’s and great art. We hope you reblog this. Time: 6PM – 1AM Access: Please RSVP RSVP: hyperallergenic12.eventbrite.com/ Location: 319 Scholes Gallery, 319 Scholes, Brooklyn Website: hyperallergic.tumblr.com

Rust Belt
In Sean Hemmerle’s poignant photographs of theatres, banks, factories, and dilapidated houses in the “Rust Belt” the architecture becomes symbolic of societal issues that have been ignored for decades. Hemmerle’s stunning photos create a visual language—the texture of aking paint, broken windows and the shiny reections in pools of frozen water inside of vast industrial buildings— that instills in us a feeling of loneliness felt for these neighborhoods that have all but been forgotten. Time: 7PM - 10PM Access: Open to the public Location: Front Room Gallery — 147 Roebling Street, Brooklyn Website: frontroom.org 12
