Editorial
This year certainly was a year of rapid growth for art and strategizing. Despite the political wobbles it’s the conservative art market that has readjusted itself locally and internationally. In terms of exciting local growth, Keyes Art Mile, Aspire Art Auctions and numerous new galleries, incentives and media Adwords have pushed through the earth, financially speaking. What seems to be most prevalent is our galleries’ participation in an increasing numbers of international art fairs and opening up branches in London. Earlier this year, I asked a well-known art dealer a very naïve question, why the overseas market buys SA art. The dealer
answered refreshingly: “A person buys an artwork because they like it. It doesn’t matter where it comes from�. Hopefully this is the new standard measure. It’s actually a relief, as SA art suffered badly from cultural boycotts during 80’s - despite the brave faces saying that it might have done some good. After forty years, it’s a relief that SA art doesn’t need to be seen just as post-’76 Protest Art to be taken seriously. But yet still, forty years later, Protest Art seems to have badly lost its way through the destruction of artworks, expression and logic that has taken the best of generations to manifest. It seems debatable that the lazy pursuit of destroying and censoring hardearned milestones of social and human evolution could ever be considered Protest Art. Finally, in looking at the medium of the day, perhaps next year will see a return to traditional media platforms beginning to re-examine themselves as carriers of opinions and debate. It seems that media houses are ironically listening more to their marketing managers than going out and listening beyond their readers to the broader public sentiment. An example of this neglect would be this year’s Trump, Brexit miscalculation, and again more closer to home the bulk of the local media monopoly that assumes all readers can be made ANC supporters. If anything, this is a year where society, businesses and artists ask themselves about the profit margin versus intention. In this brief life we live, we can make this world a tolerable place to live in and leave a good sense of human value and legacy behind in our art.

Rapid Ascension Some Success Stories from previous Graduates Generally speaking, the graduating class of 2015 wasted no time getting their work out there, winning awards, and getting signed to galleries. The majority deserve considerable congratulations for what they have achieved in their first year outside of tertiary education, and while we would love to provide this through editorial means, the task is virtually impossible. Our remedy is to be selective, focusing on those who have shown particular prevalence in the Media over the past year. We find it particularly appropriate to feature alumni of Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) since the school’s sad absence from our Graduate Showcase leaves a significant gap in the review. We cannot help but sit up and take notice of the places their talent, determination, and just a little bit of luck have already taken them.
Siwa Mgoboza graduated in 2015, with both a distinction and a place on the Dean’s List. As a parting accolade, he was awarded the Cecil Skotnes Award as the most promising artist at the school. Mgoboza was then named the Young + African Visual Artist of the Year by Creative Nestlings. In 2016, his work has been included in the Turbine Art Fair, That Art Fair, and Cape Town Art Fair. Also in 2016, he has been included on group shows in France, Turkey, China, Switzerland, and the USA. This past July, he held his first solo exhibition at WHATIFTHEWORLD.
Ruby Swinney’s 2015 graduate exhibition was bought, in its entirety, by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art. Her work has also been bought by the M&C Saatchi Abel Collection, and she is now represented by Whatiftheworld Gallery. In 2016, she participated in group exhibitions at Mullers Gallery, SMAC Gallery, SMITH Studio, and at the FNB JoburgArtFair. It is rumored that she will have a solo booth at the upcoming Cape Town Art Fair and a solo exhibition at WHATIFTHEWORLD later in 2017.

Simphiwe Ndzube won both the Michaelis Prize and a Simon Gerson Prize in 2015. He also featured in the top 10 for the 2015 Barclays L’Atelier Award. A few months ago, he won The 12th Tollman Award for Visual Art. In 2016 alone, his work has been included in group exhibitions at WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, the Iziko South African National Gallery, Greatmore Studios, SMAC Gallery and Commune 1. Ndzube is currently represented by WHATIFTHEWORLD, where he held his first solo exhibition in October/November 2016.

Bronwyn Katz won both a Simon Gerson Prize and a Sasol New Signatures Merit Award in 2015. Her first solo exhibition was held at Blank Projects earlier this year. Her work was also included in group exhibitions at Commune1, Blank Projects, Stevenson, and at the 12th Dak’Art Biennale (all in 2016). Katz is also a founding member of iQhiya, an 11-women artist collective who debuted in group exhibitions at Greatmore Studios and the AVA Gallery earlier this year.

Alexander Knox attended Ruth Prowse School of Art on a scholarship. After completing his diploma in Fine Art there in 2015, he was selected by DF Contemporary for both a yearlong residency and to be represented by the gallery. Since then he has participated in That Art Fair 2016, and a handful of group exhibitions.

He was a finalist for the Sanlam Portrait Award and a Sasol New Signatures Merit Award winner in 2015. The artist was also a Barclay's L'Atelier regional finalist for 2016.

she was named a finalist in the Barclays L’Atelier competition. She held her first solo exhibition at 99 Loop, followed by another at That Art Fair (both 2015). In 2015, she participated in group exhibitions at Turbine Art Fair and the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week; in 2016, That Art Fair, KKNK, and Paris Art Fair. In 2017, Cassim will feature under Salon Ninety One at Turbine Art Fair and will have a solo exhibition with the gallery later in the year.

offer some parallels between mental illness and neurological miscommunication, distilling emotional experience through the lens of science.
The focus of UNISA’s Visual Arts Department is to encourage cultural diversity and to foster creativity that is rich in a variety of approaches; this for the sake of developing individualisation. Experimentation is encouraged, through visually communicating personal narratives, and individual concerns. The works presented at this year’s exhibition range from reflections on post-humanism, economic discourse, and the spirit of the past.
Alicia Hindson’s video-animation, INside/OUTside/ Onsite, was created to alert viewers to the harmful effects of radiation caused by uranium deposits in mine dumps. Her research involved travelling to sites within an 80km radius, in and around Johannesburg.
Kirsty Fletcher’s idyllic, ‘White’ childhood is interrogated through juxtaposing its memories with the discriminatory laws that were passed during the same time period. By dressing the stage for this clash with a washing line, white picket fence and artificial grass, the set is made ready for the artist’s re-remembering and re-contextualisation. Sarah Boshoff attempts to reflect the mutual influences of both science and art through a study of Bipolar Disorder. The wire installation tries to 24
Marco Versfeld uses digital projection to symbolise the projection of perceptions and beliefs unto the world. His Moerland is a place of fears waiting to be confronted; and its fall by fire is the artist’s way of symbolising the courage to alter one’s own worldview in order to see a new one. In Trace memories of JAG, Pauline Borton, seeks to develop her own understanding of Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) as a ‘safe’ space for her within the greater city. This is based on her study of phenomenology, focusing on the subconscious and sensory reactions people have towards space.
with economic hardships which forced him into exile from his own country and the new challenges that living in SA presents him with. His work takes the form of a video installation, utilizing decommissioned Zimbabwean bank notes. With an installation of hand-cut paper spirals suspended from the ceiling, Janice Wyndham-Quin explains that everything on earth is interconnected and interdependent. The DNA helix is a spiral, and is at the core of everything. With the advent of technology, human beings are able to complete more tasks in one day than ever before in history. As part of the ‘always on’ generation, Louise Pretorius questions whether we have truly adapted landscape is compromised in trying to adjust to it. Lastly, the exhibition features Tony Wintour’s Pipe Dream, a reflection on the way in which systems and networks affect and entrap us– be they social, religious or political, whether it be the daily rat race or socially acceptable behaviour. Wintour’s view is that the notion of escaping these networks is but a pipe dream.

Since Nelson Mandela’s incarceration at Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison’s (1982 – 1988), the penitentiary has only gained notoriety. Continuous reports from the inside reveal the reasons for its infamy: violent gangs, severe overcrowding, questionable correctional tactics and unsanitary conditions; but all this considered, Mikael Subotsky chose to spend three months of his final undergraduate year engaging with the prisoners of Pollsmoor, giving them photography lessons and capturing their day-to-day lives. The resulting photographic series earned Subotzky a 100% pass mark for his final year at Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT, 2004). Goodman Gallery took notice of this unprecedented feat and quickly began to represent the young artist’s work. Soon after this, Subotzky became the first South African artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the youngest-ever associate member of exclusive photographer’s guild - Magnum Photos. The artist’s Pollsmoor series, Die Vier Hoeke (inmate slang for the ‘four corners’ of a prison), was
Subotzky’s first successful photographic project, and it became a pioneering force in the young artist’s career, inspiring him to further prison-photography and intimate exposures of social degradation. ‘Grey Areas (Part 2)’, an essay by Shane de Lange, labels the series as “Subotzky’s first critical analysis of the history of the prison system in South Africa”. Sean O’Toole seems to elaborate on de Lange’s words in his own essay, ‘Group Portrait’, explaining that, “[p] hotography makes history palpable and real, more so as a photo dates. But photos also transform what was once alive and tangible into history.” Subotzky continued his work at Pollsmoor in 2005, and on Freedom Day that year, he exhibited Die Vier Hoeke in Mandela’s former cell-block. This was another first, as the prison had never before hosted an art exhibition. The setting enhanced the reading of the series almost to the point of sight-specificity. Having experienced the series in-situ, Joyce Monson reported: “Experiencing the sights, sounds and protocols of Pollsmoor provides a tangible context to the images that might otherwise be difficult to conceptualize.” Monson’s report goes on to explain that Subotzky’s series “challenges viewer empathy”, and that which sets it apart is that it bows neither to “sentimentalism or sensationalism”, much as it could have done. “Subotzky, rather, makes his points with cool rationalism and an effective collaboration of photographic skill and aesthetic finesse that makes for intelligently persuasive social commentary,” she writes. Sue Williamson explains the artist’s sensibility more fittingly in his ArtThrob bio: “What was notable about the photos was not so much that they were taken within a prison, not in itself groundbreaking, but in the
particular qualities Subotzky's images conveyed. The desperate sense of men beaten down and entirely caged within a harsh institutional environment came through, and yet there were moments which showed how the human spirit survives, even under the direst circumstances. The photographs were even more an indictment of the South African prison system than of those condemned to endure it.” The strength of Die Vier Hoeke series indicates the presence of artistic excellence in many, if not all, of the photographs there-in. There is, however, one that stands out as a prime example of the complex emotional narratives that Subotzky so artfully constructed within the series. As coldly impersonal as a prisoner identification number, so is the artwork’s title: Cell 33, E2 Section, Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison (0076). Tightly-packed as sardines, the prisoners sleep. The focus lies on one who is lost in angelic serenity. Your Summer Reading List Barclays L’Atelier – 30 Years of Introspection Barclays Africa recently launched this title in tribute to the winners of its prestigious art competition. “Tribute” is the correct word to use here as each of over 40 artists’ profiles and more than 200 artworks are treated with playful focus, genuine interest and suitable reverence. “Luxurious” is the word I would use to describe the experience of handling this book. Its design is a co-ordinated dance of translucent page layering and Dadaist text formations, with visual and textural embellishments that treat both the hand and the eye. While a digital version of this book is available online, the experience of this cannot compare to paging through the hardcopy itself. Collating 30 years of a particular stream of South Africa’s significant artistic heritage, surely this book is a yardstick for measuring visual art talent on the African continent. It can, therefore, also be considered an important addition to the collections of artists, art historians and tutors.

The Keiskamma Art Project – Restoring Hope and Livelihoods Begun by Carol Hofmeyr in 2000, The Keiskamma Art Project provides opportunities to over a hundred people in the tiny Eastern Cape settlement of Hamburg to support themselves and their families. Members of this remarkable project are best known for the compelling large-scale textile artworks that they produce collaboratively. Several have been exhibited internationally and a number are in important collections – amongst them the Keiskamma Tapestry which is on permanent loan to South Africa’s Parliament. Author Brenda Schmahmann conducted extensive and meticulous research and fieldwork to produce a book that reveals the history as well as the motivations and ideas that underpin the production of its works. Magnificently and comprehensively illustrated, this volume is the first to be devoted to the Keiskamma Art Project and is destined to be valuable not only to art historians. This sumptuous book will inspire anyone with an interest in the visual arts or rural development in Africa.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is housed in a Neo-Dutch style mansion, completed in 1941, which served as residence for the Governor General of the Union of South Africa. The building was converted in 1985 into an Art Museum as a satellite of the National Museum, Bloemfontein, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture. The Permanent Collection housed at Oliewenhuis is an outstanding collection of South African art, which includes a unique outdoor Sculpture Park and a working African Carousel, for which original sculptures were commissioned. Temporary exhibitions of work by South African artists are regularly exhibited in the Museum galleries and the unique underground Reservoir gallery. Other highlights include the Blind Alphabet, an artwork created specifically for the visually-impaired, and the functional Cement and Mosaic sculptures situated in the gardens. Current Exhibition #AMANDLA![Re]form,Debate,[Re]dress? (1 December 2016 - 12 February 2017) aims to challenge and encourage viewers to develop conversations and debates about Resistance Art and the visual representation of resistance in South Africa during apartheid and post-apartheid. Sourced from the Permanent Collections of various prestigious South African art museums and galleries such as Oliewenhuis Art Museum, William Humphreys Art Gallery, Unisa Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery and Everard Read, and Legacy Visual Art Projects, the selection of artworks reflects contemporary representations of visual resistance by emerging as well as established South African artists and photographers. Included in the exhibition will be traditional ‘Resistance Art’ artworks by William Kentridge, Dumeli Feni, Julian Motau and Norman Catherine as well as contemporary artworks by artists such as Asanda Kupa, Ayanda Mabulu, Blessing Ngobeni, Michael Selekane and Setlamorago Mashilo, with the intent to visually explore concepts such as traditional vs. contemporary representations of ‘Resistance’, ‘Resistance and identity formation’ as well as ‘Land and Space in South African representations of Resistance’. The Sculpture Park, comprising of 17 sculptures by various South African sculptors, is the only one of its kind in the Free State and is permanently installed in the garden behind the Museum. The sculptors represented are: Thomas Kubayi, Liz Ranger, Isolde Krams, Walter Oltmann, Guy Du Toit, Azwifarwi Ragimana, Carol Kühn, Jacques Dhont, John Baloyi, Wilma Cruise and Jacques Fuller. The African Carousel is a public sculpture commission comprising 16 original artworks. It is a safe and fully functioning carousel where myth, fantasy and music, derived from many of the cultural traditions of the people of Southern Africa, come together. The focus of the African Carousel is to introduce children to the concept of art in an unintimidating, fun way and in so doing, to build an audience for the future. The original project had its beginnings in 1994 and took approximately three years to complete. The animal sculptures were created by South African artists Jacques Fuller, Carol Kuhn, Mark Swart, Azwimpheleli Magoro, Keith Ashborn, Rozanne Whitehead, George Ramagaga, Albert Dasheka, Stephen Risi and Elias Ngwenya. The Cement and Mosaic Project, comprising of five functional sculptures created by 14 unemployed Mangaung residents, is an attraction for both young and old.

Solly Smook INNATE Riebeek Kasteel-based artist Solly Smook comes to Hermanus for his second solo exhibition of 2016, hosted by Walker Bay Modern Art at 167 Main Road, Hermanus from 10 December 2016 until 9 January 2017. For this artist, portraiture has always been about external and internal likeness as an outer reflection of the heart. Each portrait aims for emotion, drawing feelings away from separateness. And so, his new series of paintings was inspired by a particular quote by John O’Donohue:
“One of the deepest longings of the human soul is to be seen.” As INNATE, the title of the exhibition suggests, Smook’s unfolding trajectory for this show has been to portray factors existing in or belonging to an individual from birth. He asks the viewer to reconsider this uncharted world through his non-traditional portraits. Each is riddled with movements of the palette knife, bold brushstrokes and contemporary use of colour, portraying and articulating a journey of exploration and discovery into the innate. www.walkerbayartgallery.co.za
Teresa Decinti – Artist & Gallery Owner “As far back as I can remember, drawing, painting and exploring the use of colour have been a constant part of my life. It was, therefore, almost a forgone conclusion that I would study art and become an artist by profession. I have always greatly admired the old masters. Their works have been an inspiration to me in all my artistic endeavors. My fascination with colour and its different applications made my choice to work in both watercolours and oils a natural one, after having explored various graphic techniques during my university years and early professional life. In the intervening years, I have pivoted towards landscape paintings and am now truly established in this genre. The majestic mountain ranges of the Boland, its vineyards and historical architecture, its flora and its fauna are a never-ending source of inspiration for me; as is the diversity of South Africa's wildlife. The more I paint, the more I appreciate that art reflects the artist’s own life. To me, being an artist is to be eager to stretch the learning curve with fresh ideas, to continue to explore the intricacies of paint, to "dare to be different", to be self-critical and honest with oneself. I have shown my work in solo- as well as group exhibitions in South Africa and further afield; and I own a gallery in Stellenbosch where the full range of my work can be viewed. As a gallery owner, I have the opportunity to meet the "end-user" of my work (so to speak). I find artist-client interaction stimulating and rewarding. A year of robust auction sales at Strauss & Co has seen South Africa’s leading auction house achieve a record turnover of R218 million (a 4% increase on 2015). The exceptional result, the highest since the company’s founding in 2009, is the product of a consistent sell-through rate of over 80% at its four live auctions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The upbeat mood characterizing the October auction in Cape Town saw the auction house achieve sales of R58 million, a new record for the Cape Town office and the second highest individual sale result for Strauss & Co. Strauss & Co’s strong performance caps a year that started on a sad note with the death of its co-founder, veteran auctioneer Stephan Welz, in late 2015. Drawing on the impressive legacy left behind by Welz, the senior management team of Bina Genovese and Vanessa Phillips, Strauss & Co joint managing directors, quickly steadied the ship. Businessman and collector Frank Kilbourn was appointed Executive Chairman, bringing new energy and strategic focus to the auction house in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Bringing quality work to the market has always distinguished Strauss & Co’s offering – and 2016 12
was another bumper year for collectors looking for rare and important works. Of particular note were ten works by Alexis Preller, many unseen for decades, which went under the hammer at the Johannesburg November auction. The sale of Preller’s Adam (1969) for R6 820 800 and Space Angel (1971) for R6 593 440 achieved the second and third highest individual sales results in the auction house’s history. Notable sales of works by Karel Nel, Penny Siopis, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge and Norman Catherine affirmed the vigour of the contemporary art market. In October at the Cape Town auction, Lace Cloth (1983) by Penny Siopis fetched R1 136 800. The price matched a record-setting sale for a pastel triptych by Siopis, Hunting and Nature Scene (1986), sold at Strauss & Co in October 2015. With the four live auctions now firmly established as important calendar events, Strauss & Co has moved to diversify both sales platforms, notably online. The most recent Strauss Online auction, which offered property from the estate of the late Liselotte Hardebeck, was the best performing onlineonly auction by lot and value sold. The July onlineonly auction was the highest grossing Strauss Online auction to date, netting over R4 million.

Tomorrows/Today at Cape Town Art Fair 2017
Preparations are well underway and the line-up for the Mother City’s biggest annual art event is looking better than ever. To whet your appetite, here’s a sneak peek at just one of the Cape Town Art Fair’s many highlights: The special project Tomorrows/Today is once again destined to be a key feature of Cape Town Art Fair 2017. This time it will be curated by leading international curator, South African-born Tumelo Mosaka. Mosaka was appointed as the CTAF curator earlier this year. Tomorrows/Today features solo presentations by emerging artists from Africa and the African Diaspora, all of which have been chosen by Mosaka as being representative of the continent’s most thought-provoking young voices. About 10 artists, including Onyis Martin (Kenya) represented by ARTLabAfrica, Jackie Karuti (Kenya) represented by Circle Art Gallery, Sandile Zulu (South Africa) represented by SMAC Art Gallery, Helen Teede (Zimbabwe) represented by Showcase Gallery Dubai and First Floor Gallery Harare, and Joël Andrianomearisoa (Madagascar) represented by Sabrina Amrani Gallery in Madrid, among others will be showcased. Making its inaugural mark at this year’s fair, another special project for fairgoers to look forward to is the Unframed section, which will feature largescale installations and sculptures and has been conceived to encourage visitors to engage with the art. Five ambitious projects proposed by artists from four of South Africa’s leading galleries will be dispersed throughout the fair floor to create a number of points of interest. 10
CTAF 2017 has attracted the highest number of applications in the Fair’s history, from local and international galleries. “The selection process has been extensive,” says Mosaka. This ensures that the quality of the fair is of an exceptional standard, offering exemplary value for its guests and participants. More than 70 local and international galleries will be presenting a diverse display of contemporary art from around the world at the 2017 CTAF, alongside a must-see programme of curated exhibitions, special features, talks, guided walkabouts, a digital media platform and outdoor activations that will ignite the nearby V&A Waterfront precinct. Now in its fifth edition, CTAF is firmly positioned as the leading contemporary international art fair located in Africa. The fairis produced by Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa (FMEA) of the Fiera Milano Group, one of the world’s leading events companies and the creators of the Italian art fair MIART. More than 20 international galleries are part of the 2017 selection, which includes galleries such as Galerie Seippel and ARTCO Gallery from Germany; Tiwani Contemporary, Art First and October Gallery from London; Galerie Caroline Smulders, France; Galerie Pascal Janssens, Belgium; and Galleria Continua, Galleria Massimo Minini and Primo Marella from Italy. In addition to this strong overseas contingent, galleries that are the most representative of the African continent’s contemporary art scene, such as Addis Fine Art from Ethiopia, Afriart from Uganda, Art Twenty One from Nigeria, First Floor from Zimbabwe, Gallery 1957 from Accra and Galerie Cecile Fakhoury from Ivory Coast will showcase their new works by their artists alongside the most significant South
African galleries. These include Stevenson, Goodman, SMAC, Gallery MOMO, Everard Read, blank projects, WHATIFTHEWORLD and SMITH, among others. Art museums and cultural institutions will also exhibit works in a dedicated section called Cultural Platforms. As in previous years, the organisers will also welcome a large contingent of visiting acquisitions managers from various institutions as well as significant art collectors from South Africa and abroad. A regular favourite on the fair programme, CTAF will present a series of talks given by curators, writers and art professionals. The talks will focus on strategies and practices by artists, curators and collectors who have championed contemporary African Art globally. The CTAF will also activate the nearby V&A Waterfront area with a series of outdoor interventions presented in conjunction with Lalela, an NPO that offers arts education for learners at risk. Five local galleries, Stevenson, SMAC, Goodman, Luvey ‘n Rose and WALL, will showcase pre-2000 works in the masters section entitled Past/Modern. The CTAF runs from 17 to 19 February 2017. , What is your overall goal or strategy for this 5th edition of CTAF? The mission of the CTAF is to become an international Art Fair in Africa. Our goal is to increase the participation of international galleries so as to create a sustainable art market for contemporary art. Our interest is also to have a larger representation from the continent through cultural institutions which could provide a platform for greater collaborations. Some say that African art is the only art that is growing. Would you agree? Why? Well, I’m not sure what you mean by growth!! If you are referring to becoming more sort after or showing internationally, then I would agree. I think this is partly a response to the globalization phenomenon where technology has offered us the tools to find other ways of being seen. The usual gate keepers no longer control the circulation and distribution of art. Contemporary African Artists are present everywhere today. They continue to find way to reach new audiences beyond the expectations by invigorating and reinventing themselves sometimes in unexpected ways. What are your objectives for the special project, Tomorrows/Today? My objective is to present works that engage the brutal dystopia of urban future while celebrating the ingenuity of present experiences. Confronting the myriad of issues about urbanization, these works attempt to reflect on the fragility, desire and hope for better urban futures.

Exceeding High Expectations ASPIRE ART AUCTIONS Aspire Art Auctions achieved a staggeringly high average of R322 527 per lot in its inaugural Johannesburg auction. This is more than 600% over the average price per lot of R50 800 attained in South African auction houses, in the first half of 2016, as calculated by Citadel Wealth Management. Held on the 31st October 2016 at The Park on 7 in Hyde Park, the inaugural auction set an impressive standard. An outstanding sell-through rate of over 75% across a focused 121 lots, totaling R33 733 818 in sales, confirmed the vitality of the South African art market and the value of Aspire Art Auctions’ expertise. Record Results A packed house, supplemented by a stream of local and international telephone and online bidders, conducted by leading South African art auctioneer, Ruarc Peffers, led to competitive bidding and numerous broken records. The top lot of the sale was Alexis Preller’s exceptional Profile Figure’s (Mirrored Image), selling for over R7-million — eclipsing all other amounts earned for the artist this year. Further top sales included William Kentridge’s Untitled (Colonial Landscape), achieving over R2-million, and Irma Stern’s gouache, Congolese Woman, selling for over R1.9-million. Doubling the lowest estimate, J. H. Pierneef’s Karoo near Hofmeyer matched the highest South African price for the artist of 2016, at R1 818 880. Edoardo Villa’s Homage to Maillol,

achieved a major record for the artist – the highest price for the artist’s steel work, and the second highest price for the artist in South Africa. Successful sales extended into flourishing subsectors, such as contemporary art and photography, highlighting rapid growth and potential in the South African market. Athi-Patra Ruga’s vibrant tapestry, Convention…Procession…Elevation, outstripped all worldwide records for the artist, selling for R477 456. Surpassing the artist’s previous record by 300%, David Koloane’s Dog with Green Eyes set a new record at R107 996. With just moments between the lots, two different sculptures attained a new international record for the work of Peter Schütz African Daphne and Goddess of Transformation each sold for R125 048. Diane Victor’s Abomakgereza earned the highest amount in South Africa for the artist at just under R200 000. The work of South African photographers was met with great enthusiasm, setting two new South African records at R204 624 for Pieter Hugo and R159 152 for David Goldblatt. Inaugural Cape Town Auction 2017 With the momentum of this successful Johannesburg auction, Aspire’s inaugural Cape Town Summer Auction, set for 20:00 on the 27th March 2017, is attracting much excitement and anticipation. 2016 Market Wrap Looking closely at broad issues through one artist By Sean O’Toole Every few months, whenever collectors gathered in 2016 at art fairs and auctions to buy “pictures” and share gossip, a question persisted. “How long do you think it will last?” The Hodgins bubble. “When do you think it will burst?” Not in 2016, it turns out. Six years since the death of this late-blooming painter at age 89, prices for a quality Hodgins canvas continue to command solid prices. In late October, when the new auction house Aspire launched with a sale of 120 lots at Hyde Park Corner, their streamlined offering of only artworks included six lots by Hodgins. It was a canny move on the part of the new company, which is headed-up by a group of four former Strauss & Co employees and bankrolled by Discovery CEO Adrian Gore and retiring Bidvest CEO Brian Joffe. The outstanding work on offer was a 1991 oil on canvas titled The Weather in the Streets. Described by former Hodgins student Ivor Powell as a “virtual gridlock of impulse and image,” the fourpanel painting carried a pre-sale estimate of R1.2 to R1.8 million. Overvalued? Not really, not if you consider that in March 2015, Strauss & Co sold a Hodgins canvas titled J’accuse (1995-96) for R2.5 million, a world record for the artist. In the event, Ruarc Peffers, Aspire’s charismatic senior art specialist, knocked the big Hodgins lot down for R1.1 million (or R1.25 million including premiums). Should it have earned more? It is hard to say. In 2014, Strauss & Co sold a 25-panel Hodgins in sunshine yellows and burnt orange that once belonged to the mobile phone company Vodacom for R1.8 million, a smidgen below its low estimate of R2 million. A steal, especially when you consider that Hodgins liked to work across multiple panels, as an important triptych owned by the Johannesburg Art Gallery confirms. My point is this: correctly pricing a Hodgins remains a dark art. So many questions remains unanswered about this painter. What is his seminal period? The late 1980s, when he transformed from retired artschool lecturer to painter of minor acclaim? Or maybe 6
it is work from a decade or so later, as the influence of Bacon and Guston was processed into something more idiomatically Hodginsesque? And how are we to factor in prominent Nigerian-American curator Okwui Enwezor’s estimation of Hodgins, circa 1995, as merely “like Freud or Bacon on a very bad day”? Does his withering opinion even matter? Short answer: who knows? The two major monographs on Hodgins tend towards the celebratory, rather than scholarly. It would help if our public museums were not, to misquote Bacon, quietly stumbling from catastrophe to catastrophe. Functioning museums produce, among other things, reliable art scholarship. They temper dealer hyperbole, which is always rampant, and collate critical opinion, which is always conflicting. In short: they arbitrate on careers, sifting the wheat from the chaff. In South Africa, however, the balance between public museums and the vertically aligned retail trade (galleries, art fairs, private museums) is out of sync. Meaning: the soft exercise of power by public museums is non-existent. This has left it to auction houses, whose principle business is selling work offered by willing or distressed sellers on the open market, to fill the gap (disclosure: I earn a portion of my freelance wage writing auction catalogue entries). There is nothing inherently wrong with the auction system, particularly in a robust market such as ours. Four large, well-staffed auction houses – Aspire, Strauss & Co, Stephan Welz & Co and, operating remotely from London, Bonhams – compete on the open market for pictures by principally South African artists. There are other outfits, including Russell Kaplan Auctioneers in Johannesburg and Bernardi Auctioneers in Pretoria, as well as Sotheby’s in London attempting to activate something, but in the main the four big players are set. The logic that a wolf pack of buyers will canonise the right works is, in certain respects, hard to refute. In March, Bad Man with Great Threads (1997), a virtuoso satirical portrait of a stunted man in pinstripe
suit that Hodgins started painting on his 77th birthday, fetched R2.4 million at a Strauss & Co auction. But then a few months later, just before Aspire’s launch auction, a buyer in Cape Town paid R966 280 for an unremarkable study of two generic figures against a pink ground titled A Golem Couple (2001), also at Strauss. Hodgins’ prices exist in the realm of whimsy. Of course, Hodgins is partly to blame for all this. In his senior years, which amounted to about two decades, he cranked out paintings, some undifferentiated, for a voracious market. Decades earlier he had railed against exactly this sort of thing. In 1968, a year after joining Wits University as a full-time member of staff, Hodgins participated in a recorded conversation with two fellow staffers, art historian Heather Martienssen and painter Cecily Sash, it was published in magazine News Check. Hodgins makes clear that the “most important factor” for him is an artist’s “integrity about when he holds an exhibition.” Artists were having too many, he said. “It seems that in South Africa the artist has become something of a grocer: he is making works to sell and this is the thing uppermost in his mind. He has got to produce work for an exhibition to sell, not because he has something new to say, not because there has been a change, a development, or to present what he is experimenting in, new concerns.” These criticisms, voiced when Linda Givon’s upstart Goodman Gallery in the far northern suburbs of Johannesburg was just two years old, retain a striking truth and piquancy, even today. If the artist is a grocer, then what is the dealer? It seems, to borrow a line from a younger Hodgins, that in South Africa the dealer has become something of a wholesaler. Mark Read’s CIRCA gallery has expanded beyond its landmark Johannesburg address to include new ventures in Cape Town, Franschhoek and London. good news always has a rider attached. Added Martienssen, “I think it a pity there is not more discrimination.” Which is a useful insight for gauging 2016: things have moved on, but they are still the same. Artists make, often too much, for an eager collecting public that isn’t always guided by the fussy diktats of art historians and critics regarding what is right or good or meaningful to spend their money on. This year, buyers volunteered big money for so-so Chagall and Picasso drawings at auction locally, when, on balance, a jewel of a painting by Peter Clarke depicting naked beachgoers at Sandy Bay was knocked down at an October auction at Stephan Welz & Co for only R900 000. A steal. Clarke should be matching Hodgins at auction, although he isn’t. More’s the pity. In assessing where we are collectively at in 2016 – a topsy-turvy year politically and socially – it is worth pairing up two works sold on auction, both dating from 1969. The one was Clarke’s scene of naked bathers, a work of quiet beauty gifted to a friend. The other is Alexis Preller’s intaglio painting Adam. Acquired shortly after it was made in 1969 by prominent American collectors Ruth and Jerome Siegel and long thought lost, the work was sold in November for the average price of a house in Tamboerskloof. Auctioneer Dendy Easton, best known for his appearances on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, handled the sale for Strauss & Co. He later described the Preller work to me as “a very difficult picture”, more like a sculpture. I thought it looked like moulding for a fibre-glass boat, a view possibly shared by a Christie’s auctioneer in New York who gave the Siegels a price estimate of $200. It sold for R6.8 million. Hodgins is rapidly heading that way.

Ditto Baylon Sandri, whose newest SMAC Art Gallery space opened in the Keyes Art Mile – an austere and daunting space whose keynote colour is a throwback to the early days of the Goodman Gallery in Hyde Park, which also featured black walls. Even Murray Turpin and Matt Dowdle’s Kalashnikovv Gallery, which is based in Braamfontein and represents postHodgins satirist and painter Vusi Beauchamp, has expanded to Berlin. The art market is a hungry animal, more so now than in 1968 when Martienssen, after listening to Hodgins’s grump, sighed: “I don’t know what we’d do without the buying public, God bless it.” Preach sister! True that. Of course,
