The Winter Sculpture Fair Returns to NIROX An international sculpture exhibition in one of Gauteng’s most beautiful landscapes, complete with exquisite food and wine from the Franschhoek Valley. Artlogic’s popular Winter Sculpture Fair returns to the NIROX Foundation Sculpture Park near the Cradle of Humankind on the weekend of 13 and 14 May 2017. Visitors will be invited to wander the park, discovering the artworks displayed, and to picnic amongst them with family and friends. Top restaurants and wineries will set up shop alongside artisanal cheese, charcuterie and chocolate exhibits so that visitors will be able to tailor-make their own picnic experience amongst world-class sculptures.

Open Laboratory This winter’s sculpture presentation titled Open Laboratory, will be formulated by curators who represent six South African universities. Each curator will express a separate theme through the work of alumni art students. More than fifty artists in total, all have entered adulthood after the fall of Apartheid, and so their artworks are not caught up in the political past but rather reflect the promises, hopes and challenges associated with this, the current era. Several performance artworks will also be incorporated (mentored by Nelisiwe Xaba). Workshops and other interactive activities will be arranged and announced publicly before and during the Winter Sculpture Fair.
Open Laboratory aims to bring the universities into closer conversation with the general public and to encourage discourse amongst themselves and their students. Seldom do curators and artists have the opportunity to come together to express their concerns on this scale, with this latitude. Part of the credit for this should go to corporate and private sponsors who have awarded artists with production funding through the NIROX Patronage Program. Special thanks goes to PPC, BACARDI & Swizz Beatz, Caleo Capital and Burger Radiologists. Open Laboratory will remain open to the public on weekends and public holidays from 10am till 5pm until the end of July 2017.

Sculptures on the Cliffs at Hermanus FynArts 9 - 18 June 2017 In the handful of years that the FynArts Festival has delivered greater artistic splendor to the seaside town of Hermanus, the annual Sculptures on the Cliffs exhibition has acted as a cornerstone of public art appreciation. Along the water’s edge at Gearing’s Point, the exhibition stands in prime position for ambling locals and visitors to discover from June 2017 till June 2018. The Art Times spoke to well-known South African artist and writer Lien Botha, the curator of this year’s Sculptures on the Cliffs. Lien Botha, thank you for taking the time to speak to us about your work. What is the theme of this year’s exhibition and how did this theme come about? The subtext for the 2017 Sculpture on the Cliffs is ‘echolocation’. The spark for this came from a poetry anthology by Karen Press. In the prologue to Echo Location (Gecko, 1998) she wrote: “[M]esmerized by a bead on a string and the string is a net and the net falls over us and we lie there like silver fish”… and so the artists and their evocative proposals were charted on a map of Gearing’s Point; a lookout from history – where once families would wait to spot their loved ones coming home from the sea. How did you select which works you would include? As is often the case when one is in the process of assembling an exhibition with its different participants and dynamics, a thread is the thing to trust – not unlike Paul Klee’s walking line. Each
work installed in this year’s event signals a point of resonance with another, sometimes it is evident in the materiality of the work such as the twelve wood carvings in Remembering Fish by Right Mukore and Emma Willemse’s Counting Stones. Mukore’s twelve fish hovering above the cliffs are testament to the fishing community’s history below, while Willemse’s boat lies woefully embedded in stones in the Old Harbour. Hannelie Coetzee’s memorial for love and love lost is Klipkoppe – two female busts made out of mining core material. Coetzee’s partner, Reney Warrington is a descendant of the Warrington brothers who were founding members of the Hermanus community. The Warrington brothers, initially from America, were aboard a ship heading to or from Cape Town. The direction is unclear. They fell ill and were let off the boat, which proceeded to sink a few days later. The Warrington Place shopping complex in Hermanus, close to where the sculptures will be placed marks this family history. In the curator’s attempt to balance the cargo, it is the connecting dots of ‘I is another’ (Raymond Smith’s mirror, after Arthur Rimbaud) that link the photographic installation Cape Town, South Africa of Hasan and Husain Essop. We and everything within and around us quiver in the quest of facing, faring and foraging (in) a fragile environment which we have made so. Brahm van Zyl’s Elysium I & II depicts homo sapiens as a free-form, fragmented character consisting of hundreds of short lines of steel – in sharp contrast to the real world. The abstract feel of these sculptures aims to illustrate the tension between two worlds:
the real and the virtual. Where van Zyl’s figures are reminiscent of a steel web, Ledelle Moe’s Lament II rests somewhere between a cocoon and Lemuel Gulliver. Inviting participation from the public, the large concrete and steel figure is an open invitation for direct engagement, allowing its ‘lilliputian’ visitors to sit on it. Jaco Sieberhagen’s The Whale Caller is a comment on the senseless whaling industry and the hunting of species after species to the verge of extinction, whilst simultaneously reminiscent of the figurehead of a ship. Poetically juxtaposed to this is the magic pitcher perched atop your throne, your pyramide vitae from The Whale’s Song by Karen Press. If you stood in the Old Harbour about 100 years ago, what would you have heard - the wind, the sea and the calls of the boatmen, the fisherfolk singing? Yet where are these people now? In homage to these voices musician Bronwen Clacherty will record present-day sounds from the space and songs and stories from elderly fisherfolk who once worked at the Old Harbour and weave them into an hour-long composition. The prerecorded music will be played through hidden speakers triggered as people walk along the promenade, to connect them through echoes to those who were there before. And the Sonar Sound of Richard Forbes will call home to safety the fishermen and herald the whales in whose presence we are mesmerized. Were any of the artworks produced especially for this exhibition? Yes, in fact the majority of the works were produced for this year’s event. What makes this year’s Sculptures on the Cliffs stand out from previous years’? This year we are super excited to include three artworks in the Old Harbour – a heritage site which has been allocated by the Old Harbour Trust for Sculpture on the Cliffs 2017. The work of Emma Wilemse, Richard John Forbes and the Essop brothers will be installed here. Thank you for your time. One last question. What would you have visitors take from this exhibition? The sound of whales in times of revolution (with apology to Breyten Breytenbach).

April, Freedom Month, sees the return of Infecting the City, South Africa’s pioneering public arts festival. A collaboration between the Africa Centre and the Institute of Creative Arts, Infecting the City celebrates a decade of seminal performances and installations by artists from around South Africa and the world. Now in its 10th year, this cultural phenomenon is once again set for a four-day creative arts takeover of the Mother City from 5 to 8 April 2017. This year’s collection of innovative artists represent the breadth of artistic vision capable of morphing city spaces into new dimensions, as they fill with visual and performance art, dance, music, video and more. Free as a bird and true to its logo, Infecting the City takes flight with all performances and events free of charge to the people of Cape Town. The
dynamic festival programme offers audiences the opportunity to discover new heights and explore ways of reconciling their personal and often emotional relation to public, private and internal spaces. Edited by Ashraf Jamal “Here I thought was an artist who seemed unencumbered by gravity” – Ashraf Jamal Paul du Toit passed away in 2014 at the age of 48. The recently published book PAUL is a respectfully thorough investigation into the artist’s life and art. Contributors Ashraf Jamal, Anna Stielau, Tim Liebbrandt, Sarah McCarthy, Claire McNulty, and Lorette du Toit (du Toit’s widow) refer to the artist’s work with great honesty and sincerity. During his life, his art was seldom taken seriously enough (so firmly did it swim against the stream of consciousness within South African art), so the fact that this book is so well-written is a fitting academic legitimization of du Toit’s work. The authors clearly place his work within the context of local and international art history. They also reveal elements of his life that explain much - his background in programming, his love of punk music, his perseverance in the face of long illness and his ‘joie de vivre’.
On a whole, du Toit’s archive of works represented in these pages make me smile (how could they not, pulsating with energy as they are). Relating artworks to their titles is pleasantly humorous at times. Still, there is surprising darkness in some pieces, for example the Walk Unafraid series in which grimacing humanoids brandish weaponlike limbs; and Yoga Position, a painting in which leisure looks a lot like entrapment. While the figuration is constant, no two of du Toit’s characters are the same, speaking to me about the similarities and differences between us all. Positive but realistic, this is Paul du Toit’s spirit between two covers. Paul Stein Gallery Artist, Paul Stein will be opening the doors of his new viewing gallery in April 2017. Situated against the backdrop of the beautiful wine district of Constantia in Cape Town, the gallery will house a permanent exhibition of his contemporary abstract sculptures. Many of these have kinetic elements to them, with parts which gently move in currents of air. Hanging mobiles are also featured in the collection, and will be fully assembled and ready to install in one step. The use of colour as a focal point is integral to Stein’s current range of sculptures, and the mediums are mostly steel, stainless steel, and Corten steel with elements such as wood and acrylic sheet combined to provide additional colour and texture. The rationale behind the gallery is to create a viewing space with crisp white walls as a backdrop, correctly proportioned plinths, and well-defined lighting. In the chaos and clutter of the sculptors studio, clarity of vision when working on a project, and the ability to extract a work from the surrounds of its creation, and to retreat a few metres in order to view a piece from a new vantage point are all vital steps on the journey towards completion. The location of the gallery, in one of Cape Town’s historic wine routes, offers an appetising mix of food, wine, and art. Advice on varying styles of plinths is available. L’Atelier Art Competition New Film Showcases Life-Changing Opportunities Mbatlo traces Collen Maswanganyi’s love affair with wood material, and his deep desire to continue his family’s legacy of sculpting wood using the traditional mbatlo tool. “This is a tool used to carve and shape wood. But it’s not just any tool. It’s special. It has been handed down from one generation to another. It has allowed me, my father and my grandfather to not only shape wood, but shape the future of African artists,” Maswanganyi tells viewers in the poignant film. More than just demonstrating how Maswanganyi is able to transform rough, cast-off wood into engaging sculptures with stories to tell, the film shows how Maswanganyi has been able to share his talent through the opportunities afforded to him by winning a L ’Atelier Merit Award in 2010. L’Atelier organisers are now calling on young artists across the continent to enter the L’Atelier 2017 art competition, which promises the winner and finalists’ access to unparalleled exposure and opportunities to grow their careers both in South Africa and abroad. It is aimed at young, up and coming contemporary visual artists aged 21 to 35 in South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius, Seychelles and, for the first time in 2017, Mozambique The L’Atelier competition features a string of highly coveted art residency prizes for the top two winners and top three merit award recipients, in addition to a significantly increased first place cash prize of R300 000. The top 10 finalists are placed on a two-day art professionalism course to assist them in managing their careers. PPC IMAGINARIUM AWARDS FINALISTS 55 PPC Imaginarium Awards finalists have been chosen from across the country and are moving on to the prestigious national judging round of the competition. The country’s most supportive art and design prize has once again garnered unprecedented attention from aspiring creatives, achieving a record number of entries into the competition – with an impressive 869 registered entries received, exceeding last year’s total of 698 entrants. The overall winner, category winners and runners-up will be announced on 18 May 2017 at the UJ Art Gallery in Johannesburg. The overall winner will walk away with a total cash prize of R150 000, while category winners and runners-up will each be awarded R50 000 and R15 000 respectively. Members of the public will be able to engage with the finalists’ work at a number of galleries and events across the country, including 100% Design South Africa, the Turbine Art Fair and the KZNSA Gallery, in addition to the exhibition at the UJ Art Gallery. This

30 Years Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards “Art must become a process – a living, growing thing that people can relate, identify with, be part of, understand; not a mysterious world a universe apart from them.” – Thami Mnyele Presented and hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni, the annual national Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards (MFAA) is a contemporary fine art competition which caters for artists of all ages, from all over South Africa, producing various media of art works. Merit awards are presented to winners in certain categories, plus the overall first prize and a special Ekurhuleni prize. A total amount of R160 000,00 prize money is awarded. In 2014 an additional prize for one of the Merit Awards Winners was introduced by Lizamore and Associates. This prize affords a mentorship programme as well as a solo exhibition in their gallery in Johannesburg. A competition of this nature serves as a platform where artists are encouraged to transcend limitations, reconfigure and manipulate contemporary cultural social and political signs. It is the duty of dedicated artists to employ various media to express metaphors, and their aesthetic sensibility to reflect the world we live in.

Who was Thami Mnyele? "For me as craftsman, the act of creating art should complement the act of creating shelter for my family or liberating the country for me people. This is culture." - Thami Mnyele (unpublished autobiography, 1984) Thamsanqa Mnyele was born the third of five children in Alexandra, near Johannesburg, on 10 December 1948. His father was a religious leader and his mother a domestic worker. By 1972, Mnyele had decided his personal direction lay in visual art, so he secured a grant to the ELC Art Centre in Rorkes Drift, Natal, where he received only one year of formal art training. After that year, he had to leave, for he was the family breadwinner. Mnyele got a job as an illustrator for the SACHED Trust, where he worked for the next seven years. He called for artists in the struggling communities to use their talent to express their demands and he encourage artists to become a part of a growing mobilization at grassroots level. Mnyele was later to reflect on his position: “What is a good artist in relation to a freedom fighter? ...I had managed to pick up most of the skills I needed which would enable me to be of service back home. To be of service is to integrate. The musicians of the fifties had not integrated into the community, they were the community itself. The community produced songs about the sudden ban of the African brew by the government; the community performed at a child baptismal ceremony and the community still performs at the funeral of a deceased member. Wouldn't it be good if I designed posters for these activities, painted banners, made postcards, Christmas cards, and taught these skills to those who need them?” (unpublished autobiography: 1984) In June 1976, Mnyele, Fikgile and Ben Arnold held an art exhibition at the Dube YWCA. In describing the exhibit, Mnyele wrote: “[W]e had to make a decision and take a stand to say: were we involved in the struggle and life around us, or were we merely producing "pictures"? ... We had people standing at the door counting and there were more than a thousand people crammed into the place and there were more waiting outside …We the artists were very excited because it meant we communicated, you know, something clicked.” (Staffrider 1980 Sept Oct, p.41) The Dube exhibition, located physically within the June 1976 uprising, received no attention in the Johannesburg art world, or in the press. But it became a signpost of a new attitude towards the arts, one which permeated resistance culture for the next decade and a half. In 1979, Mnyele was forced into exile in Botswana. There, he was to become a leading figure within Medu Art Ensemble and a committed ANC cadre. He organised cultural workers through Medu Arts Ensemble. In those years he also participated fully in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the ANC's military wing. In the early 1980s, Mnyele also spent some time training in the MK camps in Angola, and later in Lusaka. During these trips he worked with ANC printers designing posters, mastheads, and stickers under the ANC's name. He designed the first draft of the current ANC logo during this period. Mnyele chaired the Gaborone Culture and Resistance Festival in 1982, and gave the keynote addresses. He was also a spokesperson for South Africa's visual artists at the follow-up conference in Amsterdam in 1983. On June 14, 1985, Thami Mnyele was shot dead by South African Defence Force (SADF) soldiers outside his home in Gaborone. He had expected to move 24
to Lusaka the next day and large collections of his works that were packed into a portfolio were taken by the SADF. A week later, Security Major Craig Williamson displayed the portfolio and the works in it on SABC television, as evidence of Mnyele’s 'terrorist' activities. A fortuitous meeting with Ulrich Reimann and Marion Butsbach led to an invitation to exhibit her sculpture series The Hunt in Berlin, Germany, at the South African Embassy. Ulrich Reimann visited the Quin Sculpture Garden, Alexandria, Eastern Cape, in 2016 where he saw the series of 12 sculptures which have become known as The Hunt. He was so taken by the work, their message of the degrading effect of man’s greed on the environment and their quality that he felt that these sculptures should be seen in Europe and more especially in Germany. Mr Reimann approached the SA Embassy in Berlin who immediately suggested that the work should be part of the Freedom Day Celebrations in Germany on the 27thApril 2017. SAA has sponsored tickets for Maureen and her partner to get to Berlin, and DB Schenker has agreed to transport the work from Cape Town to Berlin. Although Maureen Quin is an acclaimed South African artist and she has work in private collections throughout the world, her sculptures have never been exhibited as a group overseas. To show her work in Europe has been a lifelong dream of Maureen’s. “I get many overseas visitors to my garden and many comment on the validity of my message and the sculptural quality, and a number have suggested that they should be exhibited in Europe but time and time again plans have failed. I am overwhelmed at Ulrich and Marion’s dedication and positive energy in organising this exhibition. There are still hurdles to overcome, but the sculptures are crated and have been shipped.” With this opportunity to exhibit in Germany at the SA Embassy, this series of sculptures will be exposed to European art collectors. This year Maureen will be 83, she has been a professional sculptor since 1954. Maureen has lived and worked away from the mainstream art world for all her working life, yet she remains productive and passionate. Being isolated has meant she is not influenced by current trends and has developed her own unique style and insights.
In 2014 to honour her contribution to the South African art world she was honoured with a series of retrospectives, which also served as a platform to launch a book on her work; QUIN Sculptures. In 2016 she was awarded Honourary Award by The South African Academy of Science and Art for her contribution to Visual Art (Sculpture). For more information on Maureen Quin Visit her website: www.quin-art.co.za Anton Smit’s work was featured at this year’s SCOPE International Contemporary Art Fair that took place in New York (2-7 March 2017). Late last year, Faith47 was selected to add a mural to the Wynwood Walls, in Miami, Florida. The Wynwood Walls is said to be the largest outdoor street art museum in the world. This honour was the topic of CNN’s African Voices (programme aired on CNN International, 14 March 2017). Christine Dixie was invited by the European Cultural Foundation to show her installation To Be King at the 2017 Venice Biennale. This installation forms part of the exhibition Personal Structures hosted by the GAA Foundation (13 May - 26 November 2017). Work by Pieter Hugo is currently exhibited as part of the Contemporary Photography section of the National Gallery of Victoria Festival of Photography in Melbourne, Australia (now, until 30 June 2017). Pieter Hugo and Guy Tillim are included in 10 Years Old 2007-2017: A History of the World Told Through the Images of the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Modena Collection, exhibited at Fondazione Fotografia Modena, Foro Boario, Italy (now, until 30 April 2017). The exhibition is curated by Filippo Maggia and Chiara Dall’Olio. Paintings from Deborah Poynton's Arcadia body of work are showing in the 13th edition of the Sharjah Biennial at Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE; curated by Christine Tohmé under the title Tamawuj (now, until 12 June 2017).

Friends Keeping a large municipal or national gallery or museum afloat is no small task, so some South African galleries have produced a society of ‘friends’ for themselves – people who are invested in the specific institution and help it however they can. We spoke to a few representatives of:
Friends of Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) - Richardt Strydom Friends of Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) - Phillippa Duncan
Friends of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (NMMAM) - Various Friends of Oliewenhuis Art Museum (Oliewenhuis) - Ester le Roux What have the Friends been able to accomplish in improving the Gallery/Museum over the years? JAG: The Friends of JAG have historically played a very important role in giving support and financial contributions, but in truth, much has changed since The Friends was started in the 1930’s. With the flight of capital from the Johannesburg inner city during the 90’s, support has dwindled. Three years ago Marianne Fassler, in collaboration with Breinstorm Brand Architects (BBA), initiated a revival drive for the Friends, to restore and expand the organisation’s important role in supporting JAG. Our vision for this expanded role goes beyond fundraising and includes audience building, promotion of JAG’s activities, custodianship and ambassadorship of the JAG brand and legacy, as well as setting up sustainable, mutually-beneficial partnerships between corporate benefactors and JAG. For example, through BBA, The Friends were able to collaborate with the South African Mint to produce a set of three commemorative medallions for JAG’s centenary. The design of these medallions focused on the original Lutyens building’s neoclassical architectural motives and prominent

sculptural pieces from the JAG collection. A percentage of the proceeds from the medallions went to The Friends’ fundraising initiatives. ISANG: The Friends of The SA National Gallery have been able to make important additions to the permanent collection over a time period of almost 50 years. NMMAM: The Friends of the Art Museum have donated close to 80 works to the Museum’s collection. In recent years the Museum’s budget for purchase of works was taken away as part of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal austerity measure and so the Friends have been instrumental in helping to fund the purchase of works by local artists for the collection – using their modest budget. Oliewenhuis: The Friends have contributed to the steady growth of visitors to the Museum with the presentation of collaborative non-profit lectures and social functions. These have included an interactive lecture during which visually impaired members of the Society for the Blind interpreted Willlem Boshoff’s Blind Alphabet, and a recent talk, The Pierneef that got away, by Dr Wilhelm van Rensburg, researcher and consultant at Strauss & Co. Through fundraising, The Friends have contributed to the purchase of 13 significant artworks by South African artists for the Museum’s
collection. On top of this, Fractal (an ad-hoc Committee of the Friends) has purchased 3 artworks for the Museum’s Permanent Collection. Typically, what methods do The Friends use to raise funds for the Gallery/Museum? JAG: Fundraising used to be primarily through membership fees and private donations, and although still significant, the amount of funding required to support and promote JAG has increased substantially. The Friends of JAG strive to develop new collaborative approaches to sharing and developing JAG’s collections and to promote its legacy. ISANG: We rely on the support of our members and corporate members. We also run an events program throughout the year. This gives our members the opportunity to attend guided walkabouts of exhibitions with the Gallery’s curators, visits to artists’ studios and private collections to which the public would not normally have access. The money raised by these events goes towards the gallery projects which we have been asked to support. In 2014, we launched our fine art prints series. The works were donated by SA artists and the proceeds

from the sales go towards acquisitions, education programs and exhibition catalogues. The prints are available to purchase from The Friends. NMMAM: The Friends of the Art Museum is a public benefit organization (PBO), non-profit organizations that relies on membership fees. The Friends run fundraising events and look for sponsorship from companies and patrons. As a PBO, we apply to funding agencies to raise money for special projects. Oliewenhuis: The Friends continuously try to find innovative ways to raise funds. Fundraising events have included poetry and wine evenings, a tattoo demonstration and lecture, and annual auction evaluations hosted by well-known auction houses. The Friends receive 10-15% commission on artworks sold from temporary exhibitions. Signature Fractal events include an annual Valentine’s Movie Picnic and Halloween Movie Picnic on Oliewenhuis’ front lawns. In 2012, Fractal hosted a very successful A Night of a thousand drawings in collaboration with the 1000-Drawing Foundation. Most of the proceeds went to the Pholoho Special School. Apart from fundraising, what other roles do the Friends fulfill? JAG: The Friends and BBA assist in press liaison and the promotion of JAG events using dedicated social media platforms and regular e-newsletters. We conceptualise activations in order to promote,
engage and reach new audiences. Most recently, we set up and funded a crowd-sourced activation to tie in with JAG’s summer exhibition - a show curated around black portraiture from the JAG collection. The online submission platform offered the public the opportunity to submit their own portraits and have them live-streamed for duration of the exhibition, as well as on The Friends’ website (where they can still be viewed). We assist in organising opening functions and in recent times the Friends have had to support in more menial, but vital operational terms, by helping to tidy up the premises before functions, supply toilet paper and replacing light bulbs. ISANG: We support the Gallery’s education programmes, sponsor openings and art performances, make funds available for the purchase of works for the permanent collection, sponsor exhibition catalogues, and generally promote the gallery to as wide an audience as possible. NMMAM: The Friends create awareness about the Museum by running special events and programs. We are also very community minded; organizing a community exhibition to help raise the profile of local artists. The Friends have also supplemented the Museum’s education program by assisting to fund transport for leaners from disadvantaged areas. The Friends help out with museum activities when extra hands are needed. They use their mailing list to let everyone know about events at the Museum, donate refreshments for events, and arrange for experts to speak at the Museum. Oliewenhuis: Since the inception of the association in 1989, it has organised a wide range of events and activities, allowing members to broaden their knowledge of the arts and to involve the whole community in the life of the Museum so that all may
benefit. The Friends raise funds to purchase works of art for the Museum’s Permanent Collection but also host special events free of charge. The focus of Fractal is thus to promote the arts among the young people of Bloemfontein, and to involve them in productions, workshops and exhibitions. Fractal also aims to educate the younger public, hoping to bring about a love for visual art and in the process attract members for The Friends. How does one become a Friend of the Gallery/ Museum? JAG: We have an online application and SnapScan payment system on The Friends website and we also have Friends on the ground whenever we have a presence at Johannesburg’s art fairs. The Art Times is deeply sorrowed by the recent passing of Barend de Wet. De Wet was a ground-breaking and highly influential South African artist who inspired generations of younger artists. His career, which spanned almost four decades, encompassed nearly every conceivable media and form of expression; from performance and sculpture to "knittings" and fanatical hobbyism. He was an extremely generous and collaborative artist and his interventions and joint projects alongside other well-known artists were an integral part of his oeuvre. De Wet intentionally blurred the lines between art and life, which allowed him to break down conventional barriers and infinitely extend the possibilities of his practice. Hence, counted amongst his myriad of ‘artistic' achievements - he was world record holder, in his age-group, for yo-yoing, - as well as a model, beekeeper, serial tattooist and an unashamed exhibitionist. De Wet was one of South Africa’s most original and forward-thinking artists and his unique approach and philosophy will be studied for years to come. Barend de Wet was one of the first artists to join SMAC Gallery almost ten years ago. The gallery commented that it was an honour to have worked with him on four solo exhibitions and numerous projects, both within and outside of the gallery. SMAC has produced two publications on the artist, including an extensive monograph authored by Kathryn Smith, who wrote: So after all is said and done, perhaps De Wet is best summed up in the words of two younger artists who have benefitted from his simply being around. As Christian Nerf would have it, ‘Barend doesn't work hard. He doesn't think hard. He is hard.’ Or this, from Robin Rhode: ‘To be able to understand the art of Barend de Wet is to be able to pickpocket an apple from a Cezanne still life before soaking one's teeth into it as a gesture of sincerity.’ We need Barend de Wet, for the simple reason that like the trickster he is, he occupies the position of the 'wise fool', thwarting cultural and artistic stagnation through his creative wit. By playing to the absurd, which is not without risk, he opens up a space for laughter and playful pleasure; attributes that are depressingly absent from so much of what we strive for - and indeed what motivates us - in an information-saturated present. Kunstenaar Barend de Wet sterf in botsing Geskryf deur Laetitia Pople Die kunstenaar Barend de Wet is Saterdagmiddag in ’n motorongeluk naby Caledon oorlede. Hy was 61. Sy vrou, Diana Cilliers, wat saam met hom in die motor was, is in ’n stabiele toestand in die hospitaal. De Wet kan as ’n mitiese figuur in die SuidAfrikaanse visuele kunswêreld beskryf word. Vir meer as drie dekades was dié enigmatiese konseptuele kunstenaar aktief betrokke by die plaaslike en internasionale kunstoneel. Hy het in verskeie media werke gelewer wat die aandag opgeëis het. Nie net was hy bekend om sy behendige gebruik van tradisionele media nie, maar ook in vlytkuns, wat hy speels aangewend het deur onder meer gebreide skilderye en beeldhouwerke te skep. Hy was ook bekend om sy performance-kuns. Hy het ’n renons gehad in die oorintellektualisering en ’n hoogdrawende inslag van kuns. “Hy was ’n kunstenaar wat alles omgedraai het, veral dit wat ons dalk aanvaar as hoe kuns moet wees. Hy het altyd vanuit ’n ander hoek gewerk en sake anders belig,” sê die kunskenner en kurator Marilyn Martin. Sy vertel hoe hulle destyds seepkissies opgerig het waar mense hul sê kon sê by die Iziko Nasionale Kunsmuseum in Kaapstad, waar sy die direkteur was. De Wet het “poedelnakend op die kissie gaan staan – nie om sensasie te ontlok nie, maar om ons aandag te vestig op ’n groter saak. Hy was sonder inhibisie en het dit wat hy aangepak het ordentlik gedoen. Hy het graag die spot gedryf in werke wat tegnies hoogs vaardig was.” Sy bydrae was nie net beperk tot kuns nie. Hy was ook ’n wêreldrekordhouer in die kuns van klimtolspel
en was ook ’n model vir die Japanse modeontwerper Issey Miyake. Daarby het hy bye aangehou en voorts het hy ’n hotel vanuit sy huis in Observatory in Kaapstad bedryf waar plaaslike en internasionale kunstenaars ’n “kunsteverblyf” aangepak het. Die kunskenner Melvyn Minnaar beskryf hom as ’n merkwaardige kunstenaar wat sedert hy op die toneel verskyn het die aandag getrek het. “Sedert sy studentedae was hy ’n absolute meester in sy speelse, altyd tong-in-die-kies-gebruik van materiale. Hy was ook een van die eerste jong kunstenaars wat Raymond van Niekerk (eertydse direkteur van die Nasionale Kunsmuseum) destyds genader het om werke vir die fasade van die kunsmuseum in Kaapstad te skep – wat nog steeds daar te sien is. “Sy laaste werke – groot, staal en gebreide werke wat amper soos reuse-speelgoed lyk, bewys weer sy vakmanskap en speelse ironie.” De Wet se lewensmotto luidens Smac, die galery wat hom verteenwoordig het, was “Kuns is lewe en lewe is kuns”. De Wet is in 1956 in Boksburg gebore. Hy het studeer aan die Michaelis-kunsskool in Kaapstad en het in lewe aan verskeie groepuitstallings deelgeneem en ook solo-uitstallings aangepak. Sy werk was in fokus op die heel eerste Kaapstadse kunsmark in 2013. Hier het sy gebreide werke en sy eie brei-demonstrasies mense gelok. In 2015 het hy sy rolprent Projected Identities in die Tate Modern in Londen vertoon as deel van die projek The Film Will Always Be You – South African Artists on Screen. The South African Pavilion is once again included in La Biennale di Venezia from 13 May to 26 November 2017. Curating our representation is Lucy MacGarry, previous curator of the FNB JoburgArtFair (2014-16), assisted by Musha Neluheni, the present Curator for Contemporary Collections and Acting Chief Curator at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. They promise to deliver a major, two-person exhibition comprising of new works by Candice Breitz and Mohau Modisakeng. Whether a Johannesburg Pavilion will also emerge is yet to be known, so for now it would seem that the minds of the public elite will base their perceptions of the ‘state of contemporary South African art’ on what these four individuals assemble. We spoke to Lucy MacGarry: Firstly, what an honour to be selected for this pinnacle of artistic representation. How was your curatorial team forged? Yes, it is an incredible privilege to realise a South African project of international significance with artists
of this calibre. Often referred to as the `Olympics of the art world’, the Venice Biennale is over one hundred years old and is the largest and most respected global platforms for presenting the work of contemporary visual artists. Musha and I were thrilled to be invited by Connect Channel to join their tender application to The South African Department of Arts and Culture late last year. We believe that the strength of our proposal lay in the diverse experience of the project team, our moving image-based, curatorial concept and the selection of only two, leading artists. We have the support of local production company, Connect Channel, along with project management team, Parts & Labour who have first-hand experience of installing an exhibition at the Biennale. The Department also made their appointment well in advance this year, allowing us the benefit of time to plan and produce an outstanding exhibition. It should also be mentioned that our project represents the first commissioning of a purpose-made work for the Pavilion which sets a great example for future interactions and

So together we look forward to spearheading a new and dynamic approach to our national pavilion. As mentioned before, you announced Breitz and Modisakeng as the exhibiting artists. What influenced this selection? The idea to present the work of Breitz and Modisakeng was informed by glossary of ambitions intertwined with the specifics of the South African art context, and out of an explicit desire to challenge conceptual and visual stereotypes of African representation and cultural consumption. Their practices are both conversant with the local and the now whilst simultaneously engaged in more inclusive and expansive dialogue beyond the confines of the country’s art context. Breitz is an internationally acclaimed, South African artist who has spent most of career abroad, in New York and Berlin. Over the past twenty years she has moved seamlessly between photography, montage and video installation exploring the dynamics of subject formation, the enduring impact of mass media culture and the role that language plays in our coming into being. Modisakeng’s work, on the other hand, is deeply defined by his South African-ness, yet it is in the reshaping of black identity, by pointing towards universal histories and the spirituality of space, that his practice resists binary readings. Their practices share in a fascination with film of a performative nature and their exhibited works will present reflexive
and nuanced interrogations of identity construction. What you can look forward to is an exhibition by two independent artists of South African heritage whose practices are keenly concerned with the moving image as a nexus to explore the disruptive power of storytelling. Excitingly, this is the first time that South Africa will present an exclusively moving image- and sound-based exhibition. At the previous Venice Biennale there was a larger group of artists selected to represent South Africa at our pavilion. Why only two this year? A retrospective view of previous Biennales shows explicit evidence for the strength of an immersive installation by one or two artists versus an exhaustive, curated group exhibition. The most compelling shows one remembers from Venice are most often singular, momentous and moving. Hence, narrowing the selection down to a maximum of two artists became both fundamental to creating a compelling experience that is uniquely immersive for the viewer as well as an attempt to challenge notions of applied inclusion and representation redolent in our large group shows of legacy on the international stage. How will having work on The South African Pavilion influence the value of these two artists’ work on the market? While non-commercial in nature, the Venice Biennale
has a tremendous impact on the careers of artists invited to exhibit their works. While it may be not be immediately noticeable, inclusion is most often followed by a surge in demand for a given artist’s work and, consequently, an increase in the value of their work. The Biennale also feeds directly into the commercial success of the artists’ galleries, especially with Art Basel, the world's prime commercial fair for modern and contemporary art, taking place shortly thereafter. By having a strong pavilion, we will bring attention to South Africa as being at the forefront of Contemporary Art and global issues. It will assist not just the South African art market but the African continent. South Africa has only participated in the Biennale for the past four iterations and is currently one of only six other African countries who will have pavilions at this year’s event. Acknowledging that the visibility of African countries remains limited, our participation is critical for encouraging fellow African countries to take part and represent their own stories, artists and creative excellence on the global stage. As the producers of the South African Pavilion we embrace this opportunity to share and promote our country’s talent at this influential cultural event.

New SA Record for Single-Auction Turnover The big three – Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser and J.H. Pierneef – were central pillars of Strauss & Co’s monumental late-summer auction in Cape Town, which generated a record turnover of R70.6 million. The superb result, achieved on a solid 84% sellthrough rate, surpassed the previous single-auction high of R66.8 million – set in Johannesburg in 2010 – by R3.8 million. “This superb result sends a strong and encouraging message to the market,” said Frank Kilbourn, Strauss & Co’s chairman. “There was a significant demand for high quality work across all the categories. I am particularly pleased by performance of the contemporary work we offered, especially young painters Jessica Webster and Georgina Gratrix and photographers Pieter Hugo and Mikhael Subotzky.” Young Arab, a gestural portrait by Irma Stern, was the evening’s highest grossing single lot and sold for R13.6 million. Produced during the artist’s visit to the Congo in 1942, the work was first exhibited in 1942, where it was acquired for £40. There was healthy bidding for Maggie Laubser’s luminous study, Shepherd Seated with his Flock, which sold for R3.97 million. Painted during the artist’s retreat to her family farm, Oortmanspoort, and acquired at the 1936 Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg, the work carried a high estimate of R2.5 million. 10
The first lot to generate post-sale applause was J.H. Pierneef’s late-career study, Bushveld Landscape, featuring his beloved acacias. Guest auctioneer Dendy Easton knocked the work down for R2 million (inclusive price R2.27 million). The same buyer paid R2.5 million for Pierneef’s study of McGregor, surpassing the pre-sale high estimate by R1 million. While canonical moderns continue to perform solidly, the biggest surprise of Strauss & Co’s first live auction of 2017 was registered during a dedicated session for decorative arts. Rival bidders chased after two nineteenth-century imperial bushels – standardised brass measuring containers – offered by a local merchant family. Lot 324, an engraved bushel used by the government of the Cape of Good Hope, sold for R1.87 million, well over its high estimate of R100,000. A similar measure used by the Transvaal government, which carried a pre-sale high estimate of R80,000, sold for R920,000. Two silver table lamps designed by Patrick Mavros, each incorporating a family of vervet monkeys, which sold for R477,456 and R443,352, also contributed to the hefty R11,55 million turnover in decorative arts. The evening sale generated a total of R53.4 million in sales, was buoyed by strong buyer interest in Erik Laubscher and Robert Hodgins. Rival bidders chased after Laubscher’s Overberg in Winter, a symphony of
complementary greens painted in 1996, which sold for R1.07 million. Egged on by a group of excited friends, a buyer on the floor eventually won Hodgins’ 2005 study, An Old Couple, for R1 million, doubling the pre-sale high estimate. Other notable works by blue-chip artists included a charcoal drawing from William Kentridge’s fifth stop-animation film, Felix in Exile (1994), which sold for R1.04 million. There was robust bidding for Jean Welz’s serene study, Still Life with a Bowl of Figs, which sold for R886,704. Photography, long treated as a stepchild by collectors, performed exceptionally well. Pieter Hugo’s still life, In Tyrone Brand’s Bedroom, attracted enthusiastic bidding. It doubled its pre-sale high estimate, fetching R125,048. An important early work by Mikhael Subotzky, Preacher, Dwarsrivier Prison (0053), a panoramic study of a Sunday church service in an outlying Cape prison, sold for R90,944. Guided art tours function on multiple levels. They foster a greater appreciation for visual art while performing the function of educating the public. More than providing an enriching site-seeing experience, they provide potential art-buyers with valuable perspective into possible purchases. More-over, they broaden tastes, developing and strengthening the art-buying potential within appropriate circles. The SA Art Times decided to learn more from two market influencers: Kate Crane Briggs (Founder and Director of Culture Connect), and Jo Buitendach (Founder and Director of Past Experiences). Kate, Jo, thank you for being willing to share your experience with our readers. First of all, could you please introduce us to the focus and specificities of the art tours that you are usually involved with?

Jo: Past Experiences specializes in primarily graffiti, street art and public art tours in the Joburg Inner City (so basically art outside in public spaces or on the streets), as well as taking clients to visit contemporary art galleries in Johannesburg.
Kate: Culture Connect’s art experiences are either open, public events or private, tailored tours. Their focus varies enormously, reflecting the wide range of art in South Africa. One tour could focus on indigenous traditions, the next international contemporary art. The aim is to create experiences that would be difficult to create by oneself. During a Culture Connect tour clients meet curators and/or artists. Often we go to places that are not open to the public – studio’s, private collections and behind-the-scenes. What sort of people generally make up your client base? Jo: We have a very varied, high-end international market specifically from America, the UK, Holland, France and Germany; schools and universities (both local and international). On weekends we run budgetfriendly tours for locals. Kate: People coming on Culture Connect’s tours include locals and visitors. Some are knowledgeable and visually-minded, such as artists, collectors and architects. Others have a general interest in art, are SA BUSINESS ART | APRIL 2017

curious or keen to learn - tour guides, people new to living here, and tourists, for example. Audiences vary according to the tour’s topic – the mix of people in our Jewish Museum tour would differ from those visiting Sue Williamson in her studio, for instance. Do you find that clients periodically purchase art while on these tours, or do you ever hear that a sale has resulted from one of your tours? Jo: Occasionally they purchase on the tour. Often they take the galleries’ details to purchase afterwards. We like to encourage clients to buy young artists’ or graffiti artists’ works. Many local clients have bought canvases by local graffiti artists at tours we have done in conjunction with graffiti exhibition openings. Kate: Yes, but not on every tour. It is common on Culture Connect’s private tours for international visitors to buy so that they have a piece to remember a special holiday. Certain tours lend themselves very well to buying, notably our tour of the Cape Town Art Fair. Typically for local clients the sales come after the tour. Culture Connects clients often buy books,
posters and other merchandise. At the recent Irma Stern Museum Culture Connect, the Keiskamma Art Project were ‘’blown away’’ by sales. It’s exhilarating for everyone concerned when clients buy art. Some international clients find the shipping charges higher than expected, but generally SA art is perceived to be good value for money. Are they any other positive results that your clients have reported? Kate: What is particularly gratifying are the personal connections made – people meeting liked-minded people during the tour, sometimes keeping in touch afterwards. I encourage donations to places we visit that are not-for-profits, eg. Iziko, AVA Gallery and Cape Town Opera (I was an arts fundraiser for 20 years and still mentor in arts fundraising). Art auctioneers, paper conservators, designers and caterers have all gained business from collaborating with Culture Connect. Sponsors, such as the De Meye wine estate benefit from publicity as I promote open events widely. I am working with UK-based curator, Tessa
Jackson OBE, on bringing artworld professionals here for an intensive nine-day trip this September. I am working more and more with groups coming to SA because of its art. Thank you for your time.
