WELCOME TO

THE FISHER THEATRE Heading into what we hope will be a wonderful summer, the dedicated team of staff and volunteers move ever closer to that significant date, our 10th birthday in September. Having been in the crowd for the opening of the Fisher Theatre, I’m thrilled to be here on my first day as Manager, with the opportunity to ensure that we celebrate in style and begin the next 10 years as we mean to go on. Looking at the here and now, this programme has the usual great variety of performances and events to entertain you. We have theatre, live-streaming from the great opera, theatre and ballet companies, a choice of arts and mainstream cinema, music, dance and on top of all of that, our committed local groups engage our community in productions and provide crucial funds. During this special year marking 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, I thought I’d highlight a few of our Shakespearian offerings. These include, in May, a life story inspired by the bard from award-winning actor Madhav Sharma, which follows a young boy from Calcutta and his journey to Stratford-upon-Avon and eventually the Royal Shakespeare Company; in June we have a live-stream of Hamlet from the RSC directed by Simon Godwin; in July, Kenneth Branagh's Romeo & Juliet, and some interactive theatre with The Keeper's Daughter immersing you in the lives of the Montague and Capulet families, and for something completely different in August to get you in a feel-good mood, a wellbeing comedy cabaret with Tina Bradshaw to help you avoid those visits to the doctor.

Bungay Film Club – Brooklyn (12A) Monday 23rd May, 7.30pm • £5, £2.50 members

Friday 27th May, 7.30pm • £10, £9 (concessions) This Oscar nominated adaptation of Colm Toibin’s bestseller is set in the 50s when Irish economic migration was at its height. Soon after Eilis leaves rural Wexford to look for her future in the US, she falls for a young Italian-American. When she returns home for a visit, Eilis finds herself torn between her new love and the life she left behind in Ireland. An enjoyable romantic drama with endearing performances from its young leads. Directed by John Crowley Starring Saoirse Ronan, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent and Emory Cohen. Ireland/UK 2015. 112 minutes.

In youth, he struggled against social prejudice and personal circumstance; in marriage, the loss of five beloved children and his wife’s progressive mental illness; in his work, he shocked the rich with scenes of poverty and poorhouses – the narrow, dividing line. This is George Crabbe’s haunting story. Forgotten is a specially-written production, portraying the personal, social, literary and scientific dramas (both comic and tragic) in the life of East Anglia’s greatest poet. This is the true story of Peter Grimes and of George Crabbe, its true author. A new play by Ray Rumsby

MAY

Fisher Theatre Film – The Lady in the Van (12A) Monday 30th May, 7.30pm • £5 A man forms an unexpected bond with a transient woman living in her van that's parked in his driveway. Two-time Oscar winner and star of Downton Abbey, Dame Maggie Smith, recreates one of her most celebrated roles – the singular Miss Shepherd – in Alan Bennett’s big-screen comedic adaptation of his own iconic memoir and honoured stage play. Based on the true story, Miss Shepherd was a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What began as a begrudged favour became a relationship that would change both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived for all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett (The Madness of King George, The History Boys) to bring this funny, poignant and life-affirming story to the screen. Starring Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings and Jim Broadbent Directed by Nicholas Hytner. 2015 104 minutes

JUNE The Royal Shakespeare Company Encore presents Hamlet Bungay Film Club – The Wonders (15)

Thursday 16th June, 7pm • £12

Monday 13th June, 7.30pm • £5, £2.50 (members) Italy’s Ligurian countryside forms the backdrop to this drama centred on a family of beekeepers. When a chance encounter with a TV crew filming a gaudy reality show offers the opportunity to update the farm, eldest daughter Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungi) sees her life from a new perspective. An unmissable performance from Lungi anchors this beguiling portrait of rural family life. Starring Maria Alexandra Lungi, Sam Louwyck, Alba Rohrwacher and Monica Bellucci. Directed by Alice Rohrwacher. Italy 2014. 111 minutes. Italian with subtitles.

Hamlet has the world at his feet. Young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead. Returning home he finds his world is utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice. Submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world. Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare's searing tragedy.

Clown Noir presents Nose Business Friday 17th June, 7.30pm • £7 A one hour-long physical comedy that combines clown, storytelling and circus skills. Joe Bloodworth, a homeless old clown, busks for money. Yet the audience does not go to see his skills they go to listen to the stories of his past. Before returning home penny-less with just the objects and memories he’s collected along the way ultimately free and happy. A clown, boffin, he trained with Jaques le Coq and Phillipe Gaulier. JUNE

FYTG presents Gargantua Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th June, 7.30pm plus 2pm Saturday • £8, £6 (concessions) A blockbuster of a play that sounds unlikely for the stage. It isn’t far from the story of Godzilla or Men in Black. It certainly has a bit of both in it and more! The show depicts a giant baby that begins its life the size of an adult, the birth of the said baby, the feeding of the baby when it’s the size of a house, the collection of the baby by military helicopters, a now church-sized baby in a military facility and finally a nuclear explosion. It’s a comedy, dipped in a grotesque fantasy of GARGANTUAN proportions. Grim at times, at others heart-warming, sometimes sweet and at other times foul but it is irresistibly funny, wacky and dynamic.

Glyndebourne Encore presents Il barbiere di Siviglia Monday 27th June, 6.30pm • £12 Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, based on the first of the Beaumarchais Figaro Trilogy of plays, has not been seen at Glyndebourne since 1994. This new production is directed by Annabel Arden and conducted by Enrique Mazzola, reuniting the creative team behind L’elisir d’amore, which received its premiere as part of Tour 2007. The production stars two Glyndebourne favourites: the internationally acclaimed lyric soprano Danielle de Niese as Rosina and Italian buffo baritone Alessandro Corbelli as Dr Bartolo. The award-winning young German baritone Björn Bürger will make his Glyndebourne debut in the title role.

much architecture, the level does certainly not do curves or is this a paradox? Has level become a form of control pushing continuously for perfection and is it possible to achieve perfection or is it always just out of reach? Much of human life depends on level, whether it be spiritual, achievement, class, financial, we are stuck within the boundaries of hierarchy, a human condition to better oneself and move to the next level. Buddy Holly & The Crickets are brought back to life, as they looked and sounded in 1958 when they first toured the UK, by talented musicians Spencer J, JJ King, Gerry Slattery and Spencer Lingwood. Not a stage play, Spencer J & the Copy-Cat Crickets create the feel of a Rock 'n' Roll concert, straight from the 50s. The band will take you back to the age of the soda shop, the drive through diner and the record hop. Years of research and rehearsal have gone into perfecting this show. The results speak for themselves. At every performance, audiences clap, cheer and sing along. They dance, yell for encores and ask for photographs. And at the end of every show, the question is always "When are you coming back?" Song choices are based on actual set lists from Buddy Holly's late-50s performances. Besides legendary hits like Peggy Sue, That'll Be The Day, Oh Boy! and Heartbeat, dozens of other gems from his catalogue of over 100 recordings are also featured, as well as hits by the other Kings of Rock 'n' Roll, all of which Buddy actually performed at live shows (La Bamba, Blue Suede Shoes, Rip It Up, Shake Rattle & Roll.)

Everything you hear is live, there are no gimmicks or backing tracks! A lot of the numbers Karen sang seem, with hindsight, to reflect the feelings and emotions she experienced in her life and have been chosen purely with that in mind.

Over the course of his Homeric journey, Hector decides to reconnect with his long estranged past. John Otway Friday 26th August, 7.30pm • £14, £12 (concessions) Rock veteran Otway dubbed himself "rock'n'roll's greatest failure" after many unsuccessful attempts to produce a second hit single to follow his 1977 classic (Cor Baby, That's) Really Free with Wild Willy Barrett. However, a mere quarter century later, he was back on Top of The Pops with the wonderful disco pastiche, Bunsen Burner and back in the charts as a birthday present from his adoring and patient fans. And, more recently, his Beware Of The Flowers Cause I'm Sure They're Going To Get You Yeah voted the seventh greatest lyric of all time in a BBC poll. And if that wasn't enough, the spectacular failure of his round-the-world tour was just one of the many incidents to be featured in his rockumentary Otway The Movie – Rock'n'Roll's Greatest Failure which played in cinema houses and film festivals across the UK and is now available on DVD. Expect madcap mayhem and some scintillating stunts from a man old enough to know better … and also to be surprised at just what a showman and musician really lies underneath the tomfoolery.

F– THEATRE I S H E R–

HIRE

The largest room within the Theatre offers a maximum seating capacity of 160 and an impressive 240 when all guests/delegates are standing with minimal seating on offer. Unusual for an auditorium are the windows in the roof that flood the space with natural light. These can be blacked out if not required. Added to which are theatre lights that are able to create added atmosphere to enhance any event from the formality of a conference to an evening party. The floor consists of 60 individual floor panels that can be raised or lowered, to six different heights, allowing you to choose the size of the main stage, seated area, center stage or even a catwalk. The technical side of the auditorium is controlled from a box above the auditorium at the back, accessed via the gallery. For more information, call us on 01986 897130
