As we’re putting the finishing touches to this edition, the rain has stopped and the sun has finally begun to make an appearance. Here in the office, we can’t stop thinking about the fantastic things our region has to offer during the spring and summer months. Hooray! In this issue we’re taking a close look at what the beautiful medieval town of Bury St Edmunds has to offer lovers of the arts - you can even win a meal at the prestigious Best Western Priory Hotel in the town. We’re also focusing on Norfolk artist Nicola Slattery and her solo exhibition at Mandells Gallery, Norwich which is going to be incredible. As usual, the magazine is packed with news to let you know what’s going on in your area in the worlds of theatre, art, music, film, literature and photography. Nicola Slattery: Solo Exhibition Mandells Gallery, Norwich - April 5th-26th
Norfolk artist Nicola Slattery is holding a solo exhibition of her work at the prestigious Mandells Gallery in Norwich. This month our cover image shows one of Nicola’s fantastic paintings that will feature in the exhibition. For Nicola, art has always been her passion. ‘As a young child from say 5 or 6 all I wanted was to be an artist,’ recalls Nicola. ‘It was quite a mystery to my parents who were not artistic at all but they readily encouraged and supported me.’ Art college opened up a whole new world for Nicola who enjoyed immersing herself in the history of the various art movements. ‘I loved discovering many different artistic styles such as medieval, renaissance and contemporary and these have influenced me greatly ever since,’ says Nicola. In particular Nicola has found herself influenced by figurative painters including Paula Rego, Anna Maria Pacheco and Eileen Cooper. Another big influence for Nicola is the countryside and animals which surround her in South Norfolk. ‘Almost subconsciously, my physical surroundings have seeped in and become more and more apparent in my work,’ says Nicola. Alongside her own work, Nicola also teaches a mix of painting and printmaking courses. ‘I teach Painting with Acrylics which helps people develop a palette and be more confident with the physical use of acrylics,’ says Nicola. ‘In my Art from the Imagination course I work with people to help them develop and use their ideas, perhaps using painting in conjunction with other skills such as creating a collage. Finally I also run a printmaking course. All of my courses are open to people of all abilities and last a weekend.’ Nicola’s Mandells exhibition will showcase roughly 30 of her pieces which will all be for sale. She has also just had the honour of having a piece called ‘House for me’ accepted for the Royal Sociey of British Artists (RBA) Open Exhibition this month. Her work has been exhibited widely across the UK and Nicola is already planning ahead for another solo exhibition of her work next year with the Fosse Gallery at Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. ‘My work can be described as figurative and narrative and it is from my imagination,’ says Nicola. ‘I imagine people in situations and environments and this leads to a painted image in which I am more concerned with mood and feelings rather than any pictorial accuracy.’ For more information and details of courses go to www. nicolaslattery.com

Visual Arts News Blickling Hall Exhibition: April 29th - May 12th
The Tuesday Group, with guest artists, will be exhibiting at the beautiful Blickling Hall on the above dates. The Tuesday Group is made up of three artists - Mary Richardson, Lyn Ravenhill and Richard Newby - who got together a year ago to organise local exhibitions. The group’s aim is to promote the work of talented, local artists so guest artists are invited to take part, with the intention of creating varied and interesting events. The guest artists at Blickling Hall are Jo Arnold, Joy Cole, Michelle Daniels, Ann Houston, Krys Leach and Kay O’Callaghan. Paintings, ceramics, textiles and sculpture will be on display.
Take Two
The Take Two exhibition to be held at the Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh from April 4th-8th is a collaboration between two friends - Bill Pryde and Barrie Houghton. After 30 years as a director in theatre, television and film, Bill completed his MA in Printmaking at Camberwell in 2001. Barrie trained as an artist before enjoying a career as a theatre designer, then actor before returning to painting 20 years ago. They met when Bill directed Barrie in a TV drama. They are now both based in Suffolk and this will be their first exhibition together. www.billpryde.co.uk
Sound Matters - From March 29th-May 24th, Smiths Row in Bury St Edmunds is home to Sound Matters - a Crafts Council Exhibition which considers the connections between craft and sound art through seven contemporary works. visual arts Support the Lifeboats The Ferini Gallery in Pakefield is raising money for the RNLI with the sale of two paintings. Twenty-five per cent of their sale will be donated to the charity. One of the paintings, pictured here, is called Blue Flame I and is by artist Leon Bradford. Welcome to the new Alby Arts Centre
Previously known as Alby Crafts and Gardens, this popular tourist attraction is re-opening this month, complete with a new name and a studio dedicated to producing and teaching art. The art gallery will be run by new tenants. Sculptors Helen Dixon and Mitchell House will run the studio named ‘Learn Create’ as a place to offer pottery, art and sculpture classes to people of all ages and abilities. visual arts Artist Profile - Heather Richards
Talented Norfolk potter Heather Richards is a whirlwind of energy. ‘I am a designer and maker, I would not necessarily call myself an artist all the time,’ says Heather.
She may be slightly uncomfortable with the term artist but anyone who has seen Heather’s work would disagree. With its quirky style, beautiful hand-painted artwork and sense of fun, it’s hard not to fall in love with everything she makes. Her creative, exuberant, exciting personality is apparent in every curve, brush stroke and detail. ‘I’m known locally as the enthusiastic arty lady…or the chicken lady…or that potter that makes those lovely hare mugs,’ says Heather. ‘The beauty of making things from scratch is that you can do anything.’ Heather has always been creative and, after a foundation course in art and design in Cambridge, has worked in various arts-based jobs for youth services and psychiatric care. But pottery is her passion. ‘I’ve owned a kiln since I was 18 and love making unique pieces for people to enjoy,’ says Heather. Heather’s work can be seen on her website and Facebook pages below and is for sale through Folksy, Etsy and in various outlets including the shop at Holkham Hall and Shore Line in Old Hunstanton. ‘I am also supporting local craft fairs, especially in our beautiful Pulhams - the next ones are the Pennoyers Centre, Pulham St. Mary on April 26th and Pulham Market Village Hall on May 10th,’ says Heather. Alongside these current outlets, Heather is currently establishing links with new galleries and cooperatives who are keen to show her work. ‘I’m also available for commissions should someone want a special and very personal gift made,’ says Heather. ‘I feel privileged to be a part of people’s memorymaking with their newborn infants, family handprints and fantastic wedding, Mothers and Fathers Day gifts and Valentines presents.’ Behind every piece of Heather’s work is a story. Even the animals that she paints have a tale to tell. ‘I imagine the chickens talking about local issues like proposed wind farms and the effects it may have on their friend Mavis’ condition,’ laughs Heather. ‘I love imagining and painting what hares get up to when you’re not looking..like riding motorbikes or playing in string quartets.’ Heather is also available to co-ordinate group events such as pottery painting sessions for toddler groups, Brownies or schools. She can also organise events for adults who want to turn their hand to pottery. ‘I also hire out DIY pottery kits complete with everything you need for you or your group to create really special pieces,’ says Heather. Elsey’s Gallery Brian Ansell - Reveal Stone Carving and Sculpture Exhibition, March 6th-29th Local Bury St Edmunds sculptor Brian Ansell’s remarkable forty year career as a master stone mason began in 1969. Brian Ansell’s work has a timeless quality because he uses the same traditional direct carving techniques as the ancient and traditional stone masons. Continuing to carve with the tools that he began his trade with forty five years ago, he is able to work without modern conveniences such as electricity. Brian conveys in his work a sense of antiquity and links us directly with our past heritage. His extensive experience, combined with a passionate interest and knowledge of local history will provide visitors to the gallery with a fascinating glimpse of past and present together in the same space. The astonishing quality of Brian’s workmanship has generated high demand with museums and private collectors. Notably he was one of the two highly skilled craftsmen to remake the Sutton Hoo Stone Sceptre. Brian Ansell’s illustrious career has encompassed his important roles with the prestigious teams of stone masons who worked on the restoration of Lincoln Cathedral and York Minster’s Great West Door. visual arts Anthea Eames: Wymondham Arts Centre 2014
March 21st - April 13th, Becket’s Chapel, Wymondham Norwich artist Anthea Eames is launching Wymondham Arts Centre’s 2014 season with a solo exhibition of abstract work inspired by the African, Australian and Norfolk landscape. Anthea’s paintings stem from her continuing relationship with these different landscapes. She has lived in Norfolk for 30 years, but before that worked in Zambia and Nigeria as a teacher and illustrator. Her discovery of Australia is more recent and began when her son emigrated in 2007. A new 10ft x 4ft triptych called Australian Goldrush will be completed for the Wymondham show. Anthea’s connection with Africa has been renewed over the last two years by leading women’s art workshops at the Chongoni UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dedza, Malawi, part of the Norwich Dedza project www. norwich-dedza.org. She returns in May and June this year, training women to design greetings cards drawing inspiration from Chongoni’s Stone Age rock art. Video of her work in Malawi will be included in the Wymondham exhibition. ‘I’m really interested in the history of landscape – how human activity has transformed it through time,’ explains Anthea. ‘I do not try to record the subject, but rely on my memory and intuition and imagine that I am looking down on the landscape when I work. I love Norfolk; it’s a wild and beautiful county with gentle colours set under a vast sky, a wonderful contrast to Australia with its intense reds and glowing oranges and deep blue sea. I create multi-layered textured surfaces using the earth itself, gathering red and yellow ochres, sand, chalk and shingle from places that have a particular resonance for me, like Winterton beach in Norfolk or the Chongoni area in Malawi. The process involves grinding and mixing these materials with resins to create my own paints.’ The exhibition is open daily, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 12noon to 5pm, free entry, www.wymondhamarts.com. Dyeing Crafts Preserving tradition Dyeing Crafts is a small organisation attached to our nursery school and kid’s club (busybees-nurseryschool.co.uk). Our aim is to encourage the teaching and preservation of traditional crafts using natural resources. We aim to be as self- sufficient and eco- friendly as possible. Inspired by the colours used during the Medieval period we grow and sell a selection of reliable natural dyes, including woad, weld, madder and coreopsis. Natural dyes give a wide range of wonderful, subtle and superior colours. They are the most ecologically sound and by using them in preference to synthetic dyes we can help reduce our carbon footprint. Workshops are offered in the use of natural dyes, peg loom weaving and wet felting. The children have just wet felted around some foam balls using alpaca fleece from our own herd - which has previously been dyed with the natural dyes that we grow on the farm. It is a fun and simple felting activity for children. Wet felting is the process of using warm soapy water and friction to stimulate layers of perpendicularly placed roving to bond together and become felted. Children of all ages enjoy feeling the fibre slowly bond to become an object - it’s quite magical.

antiques & collectables West German ceramics from the 1950’s to 1970’s is a new and exciting field in collecting; not surprising as this period in West German pottery saw an explosion of creativity, design and colour which was unmatched in the 20th Century. The main companies were Scheurich, Dumler & Breidon, Roth, Ruscha and Bay Keramik who were producing vases and pots on a grand scale in a huge range of designs and forms, and other smaller potteries including Ceramano, Hoy, Karlsruhe and ES Ceramik, joined in n a lesser scale. The ceramics of the 1950’s have curves or geometric forms and are often painted in bright, primary colours with details outlined in black. The patterning comprises ovals, circles, lines and stylised natural motifs and jug vases with angled handles are particularly common. There was a complete change in the 1960’s and 1970’s when colour and texture became the important features and instead of patterns and decorations, potters favoured a very thick glaze that flowed down the vase or pot like lava (hence the term Fat Lava was applied to describe this style). Many Fat Lava pieces were produced in limited numbers and as a result are
more desirable to collectors such as myself. Not all West German potters from this period used this style of glaze, so although all Fat Lava pottery is West German, not all West German pottery is Fat Lava. The main West German Fat Lava producers were Scheurich, Carstens, Bay, Strehla, Jasba and Roth. The makers can be identified by considering the shape, colour, type of glaze and style of moulded marks on the base which usually read W GERMANY with a number referring to the shape. I pride myself that I can now spot a Scheurich vase at twenty paces! Arts at Pulham School At Pulham Primary School we are starting to make plans for Arts Week 2014. The School achieved Artsmark status in the summer of 2013 following an inspirational Arts week. The Arts are a crucial part of school life and we value the positive impact on children’s learning. We are currently working on a whole school mural which encompasses the school philosophy of ‘I am unique, together we are awesome!’ For this project all the children in school designed a ‘unique’ fish to make up the body of an ‘awesome’ fish! It also provides a valuable link to the Christian values that are at the heart of our school. The work demonstrates the individuality of each child and the progression in artist skills across the school. For Arts week in June this year we are utilising local talent and working with artists in the community. We already have a potter, textile artists, a stain glass artist and traditional dance activities planned and BBC Voices are sending a film crew to work with the children to film the week! We all remember particular teachers from our School days, some we admired and some we feared but were there any that we would have fought to save? At the heart of Norfolk history is the touching and remarkable story of Tom and Annie Higdon and the courageous children who kick-started the boycott of the Council School in Burston, which lasted for over 25 years and has earned its place in history as the longest lasting strike action! The Bricks of Burston is a new play which focuses on the two inspired educators who fought to change the poverty and injustice inherent in their society. They were blackballed, reviled and persecuted by many but they also provoked loyalty, trust and devotion from those they battled to help. This powerful and touching piece of theatre will explore memory, remembrance, relationships and change. In an exciting collaboration with the Burston Memorial Committee and the Trade Union Centre, April 1st sees the start of Stuff of Dreams’ most extensive tour to date on the 100th anniversary of the day a group of children and parents marched down the streets, playing instruments and carrying placards that read ‘We want our teachers back!’ This will be the company’s fourth touring production and their second original play. Following the success of Love Left Hanging, based on the famous Red Barn Murder, The Bricks of Burston sees the same team (director Cordelia Spence, co-writers Emma MacLusky and Anthony Cule) reunited for their next adventure into Norfolk history. The Stuff of Dreams Theatre Company is based only five Miles from Burston and is passionate about telling stories inspired by local history and people. This spring, Stuff of Dreams will celebrate this moving story with communities across Norfolk and Suffolk and continue to re-tell it April 1st - Diss High School further afield, giving Tom, Annie and the April 2nd & 3rd - Upstairs at the Western, Leicester children of the Burston Strike School April 12th - The Bank, Eye the recognition and admiration they April 17th - The Garage, Norwich deserve.

Formerly Cambridge Wordfest, the Cambridge Literary Festival is the foremost literary event in the South East. This year promises to be it’s biggest and most ambitious year to date. Taking place from April 1st to 6th and with an ambition to establish itself as an international forum of ideas, the 2014 Cambridge Literary Festival has confirmed some of the most exciting writers, journalists, politicians and commentators of our age. Norwich Arts Centre, March 26th, 8pm For the past four years, Norwich-based photographer and poet Martin Figura has been touring the world with his show ‘Whistle.’ Now he is bringing it back to Norwich for what is probably its final performance. At the centre of ‘Whistle’, is a family tragedy that would have destroyed the lives of many children. When Martin was just 9 years old his mother was killed by his father. After the killing, his father, a former German soldier who fought the allies in WW2, went to Broadmoor. Martin and his sister went to live with relatives who soon discovered they couldn’t cope, so they sent him to boarding school and promptly emigrated without telling him. Martin went into care. He was rescued by some kindly former neighbours who gladly took him in and gave him a home. Their son joined the army so Martin thought it seemed a good idea too, ‘I felt very loved and secure with my adopted family, but I also felt a huge responsibility not to be a burden to them, so joining the forces seemed a positive way out,’ he explained. Through all this he visited his father in Broadmoor, and then at a local hospital. Martin left the army in 1997 having risen through the ranks to become a Major. The show ‘Whistle’ is an hour-long multi-media piece, in which themes of identity, forgiveness, loss, adoption and family are explored with insight and gentle humour. Despite the serious and shocking nature of the subject matter, such is Figura’s skill as a poet, that he is able to give the audience a profound and uplifting experience. Martin Figura won the Poetry Society’s Hamish Canham Prize for his poem Victor, as both poet and photographer he has been widely published and exhibited, including at The National Portrait Gallery. www.norwichartscentre.co.uk

Made up of New Wolsey Theatre, DanceEast, Pacitti Company and Gecko Theatre Company, We Are Ipswich is an alliance between leading creative companies in Ipswich that are uniting to show the world Ipswich’s outstanding talent and creativity; working together to showcase the top quality work that is being produced. The four – all of which are Arts Council England National portfolio organisations – are committed to making the most of what Ipswich has to offer, which is expanding all the time. The work created as a result of this collaboration will be showcased during 2014, enabling audiences to become acquainted with and to enjoy innovative new world class work being created in Suffolk and the venues that produce it. In addition to bringing fresh work to new and existing audiences, the collaboration will seek to develop an economic benefit for Ipswich -
arts council creating jobs and attracting revenue for the town. For these four arts organisations, working together towards a shared ambition is a natural step to making great art accessible to everyone in the town, the surrounding region and beyond as the work tours the country. We Are Ipswich is kicking things off in 2014 with two extraordinary shows that are supported by the New Wolsey and hosted by DanceEast, with critically acclaimed performances by Gecko. Coffee and a Chat ARTSeast editor Sarah Veness chats to broadcaster and performer Helen McDermott about her famous sidekick BC and her upcoming new show.
theatre & film To anyone growing up in the Anglia Television region in the 1980s, Helen McDermott is instantly recognisable. As an announcer, Birthday Club presenter and news anchor, Helen became a household name. But before a broadcasting career beckoned, Helen actually trained as a ballet dancer at the prestigious Arts Educational stage school. ‘From ballet, I moved into musical theatre and discovered a real love for performing,’ says Helen. It was during a stint on hospital radio in Plymouth, while staying with her family, Helen was discovered by a BBC producer. ‘He told me I had a really nice voice and Photo supplied by Archant. managed to secure me some work with a local BBC radio station earning the grand sum of £4 a week,’ laughs Helen. ‘Realising broadcasting could be the way forward, I approached Westward Television in Plymouth and told them I’d do anything! They gave me a job making the tea and from there I eventually managed to secure a position as a continuity announcer.’ At the age of 23, Helen was offered a job at Anglia Television in Norwich. ‘I’d only ever been to Norwich once and wasn’t even really sure where it was,’ says Helen. ‘I told myself I’d stay for a year or so to get experience but here I am, 37 years later, still here!’ In fact, Helen loves living in Norfolk and has won a place in the hearts of everyone who watched her reading the local news. But it was reading the birthday announcements that Helen is most famous for. ‘Back at Westward I’d worked with station mascot Gus Honeybun when reading the birthday messages,’ says Helen. ‘I knew the people of the Anglia region would love it too so I persuaded them to bring in a puppet called BC (birthday club).’ BC went on to become a fixture on Anglia Television for 22 years. ‘Even now, people still come up to me to say that I read their birthday card out to them on television,’ says Helen. ‘They’re often great big strapping lads now which makes it hit home just how long I’ve been in this business.’ Despite her successful broadcasting career, it turned out that Helen’s original love for theatre had never quite gone away. While still at Anglia Television, Helen was asked to take part in a pantomime and loved every minute of it. Inspired, she set up a company with award-winning actor Des Barrit called OhYesitiz Productions. ‘We work together to produce fantastic pantomimes,’ says Helen. Helen is very supportive of the arts scene in our region and, in particular, works closely with the Beccles Public Hall & Theatre. ‘It’s a lovely venue and I very much enjoy supporting the work they do,’ says Helen. This May Helen will be touring in her new show called Cowards in the Wings which celebrates Noel Coward’s songs. The tour takes in, among other venues, Sheringham Little Theatre, Halesworth Cut, Beccles Public Hall, Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft Seagull, Gorleston Cliff Hotel and the Southwold Festival. Seachange Arts Unwrapped Theatre
This April, Seachange Arts’ Unwrapped Theatre, a programme of performance in partnership with internationally acclaimed producers, Battersea Arts Centre, returns to Great Yarmouth. Unwrapped Theatre’s spring programme takes place from April 10th to 12th at St. George’s Theatre and Seachange’s Drill House. Two of the shows will feature associated ‘Cook-ups’ featuring food and free entertainment or workshops. ‘Act-On’ offers a range of events and activities to cater for budding actors of all ages from 5 – 105! Based in Bressingham near Diss, ‘Act-On’ offers more than your average drama lessons. As well as offering weekly drama classes for children aged 5-18, they also run an agency which regularly has people auditioning for roles in film, TV and advertising. Classes run weekly during term time in Bressingham on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings and in Bungay on Thursday evenings. Classes are also set to run in Ely on Monday evenings and Cambourne on Tuesday evenings. The classes are run by professional actors and experienced staff. Act-On is lucky enough to be working with many professional actors including Louis Hilyer who has worked with the RSC and the National Theatre and Scott Handy who is also a National Theatre and RSC actor. Other professional actors working with our students are Matilda Ziegler and Agni Scott, both of whom have extensive stage and screen credits to their name. Feedback from parents and students has been fantastic. The classes focus on building skills and working on drama techniques. Activities that take place in classes also help to build on students’ confidence and self-esteem. In the future ‘Act-On’ is planning to run holiday workshops/clubs in the major school holidays. Down among the Wines & Spirits Sewell Barn Theatre, March 6-8th 2014 Each season, the Sewell Barn Theatre puts on eight productions running between October to July, with a break during the holiday period. This year they were presented with an offer they couldn’t refuse – two familiar faces at the Barn, husband and wife duo Cassie & Selwyn Tillett, offered to put on a music hall show. The pair have always been enthusiastic about the use of music in the theatre (Selwyn is an accompanist of 45 years’ experience and both are singers). However, more important is to disabuse people of the notion that you need to “be a singer” to make good use of music. Many wonderful entertainers are not “singers” in the accepted sense of the word (think Noel Coward, Dame Judi, Rex Harrison…); and our entertainment forefathers in the music halls were no different. Speaking of the production, Cassie Tillett said, “You will hear (and be encouraged to join in with) familiar songs, but there will be unfamiliar material too; and we hope audiences come away feeling that they have come to know the real people behind the stage personae. Stowmarket Chorale present The Peacemakers

music A musical medley at The Park Hotel, Diss One of Diss’ most established venues, the Park Hotel offers a fantastic space for events and gigs. This year, they have some excellent gigs coming up. On March 21st The Park welcomes 70s Glam Rock covers band The Glamtastics to the stage. With their twin lead guitarists, this five-piece band from Norwich play classics such as Free Bird, Hotel California and instrumentals such as Jessica (The Top Gear theme tune and Sylvia by Focus. It looks like the eighth Norwich Jazz Party is shaping up to be just as successful as the previous seven. Being held as usual over the first Bank Holiday weekend in May, the Party moves to a new venue this year - the excellent Sunningdale Suite at Dunston Hall Hotel just south of Norwich. Between the afternoon of Saturday 3rd May and late in the evening of Monday 5th the event brings together twenty-nine top flight musicians from both sides of the Atlantic to provide over twenty-six hours of super mainstream jazz and swing. Houston Person, Ken Peplowski, Duke Heitger, Jon-Erik Kellso, Chuck Riggs, Dan Barrett, and Rossano Sportiello are all returning across the pond to repeat their success from last year with Scott Robinson and Howard Alden (replacing Photos by Bruce Lindsay the indisposed Bucky Pizzarelli) returning after a gap. After missing last year because of illness Jim Galloway from Canada will be joinng the party again. Pianist Ehud Asherie joins the party for the first time from New York as do bassist and singer Kristin Korb from USA/Denmark and reed virtuoso Aurelie Tropez from France. The UK contingent includes Alan Barnes, John Pearce and Adrian Fry amongst the all-star lineup and making his NJP debut, saxophonist Robert Fowler. Scott Hamilton travels from his home in Italy, guitarist Jacob Fischer from Denmark. Eiji Kitamura has the longest journey from Japan and Ron Hockett, the shortest from Norwich. Not only are the musicians from across the globe, tickets are being sold to jazz lovers not only from all over the UK but also from Germany, Norway, Austria, USA, Canada, Japan and Australia! local arts scene The Arts in Bury St Edmunds The thriving medieval market town of Bury St Edmunds is home to a lively arts scene that offers something for everyone. The town itself may be steeped in history - with some beautiful buildings to enjoy - but its theatres, galleries and venues offer some of the best modern entertainment in the region. Bury’s Theatre Royal is the only surviving Regency theatre left in Britain and has a fantastic arts programme for adults and children alike. The spectacular Apex provides a modern music venue right in the heart of the town centre while the beautiful St Edmundsbury Cathedral also plays host to a wide variety of musicians. local arts scene Celebrate the arts at St Edmundsbury The new arts programme at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, gets underway in March with a mix of music, art exhibitions and drama. The annual Organ Festival opens on Saturday March 1st at 5pm with a recital by Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge. The organ festival continues throughout the year with a recital most months by a celebrity recitalist. During March the Cathedral will be transformed by an ambitious art exhibition called Respect, when the whole building will be filled with huge banners and vessels decorated by children from across Suffolk. Opening on March 12th, the exhibition is open daily, free of charge, until March 30th. March heralds the start of Lent so the Cathedral’s programme reflects this special time of year when the church prepares for Easter. Come and enjoy the peace and wonder of the Cathedral, which is open daily for tourists, pilgrims and for prayer.

BURY BACH CHOIR
The Bury Bach Choir was founded in 1932, initially to perform the great works of J S Bach. Over the years the choir has developed into a highly-respected choral society that performs most of the main works of the choral repertoire, up to and including contemporary compositions. The choir has a singing membership of approximately 100 drawn from Bury St Edmunds and its surroundings, and presents three major concerts plus a Christmas concert annually in venues such as St Edmundsbury Cathedral, St Mary’s Parish Church, the Apex and, at Christmas, the beautiful churches of Lavenham and Long Melford. The choir uses professional soloists and orchestral musicians and so is able to bring to its concerts very high musical standards. The choir was described by the East Anglian Daily Times as “a treasure for the town” and is proud of its achievements over the last 82 years. The choir is generously supported by a range of corporate and private Friends, Benefactors and Patrons, and is especially
local arts scene fortunate to have as its major sponsor the leading music publisher, the Music Sales Group, that maintains a large operational base in Bury St Edmunds. The choir plans its programme of concerts more than two years in advance and aims to provide its loyal and appreciative audiences with a wide selection of some of the finest choral music ever written, including both well-known favourites and many less well-known pieces. In the next 18 months or so the choir will be singing works by Bach, Fauré, Duruflé, Mozart, Handel and Britten. New members are always welcome. Our Music Director – Dr Philip Reed
Philip Reed read music at Leeds University and at the University of East Anglia where he completed his PhD thesis. Philip is an acknowledged authority on the life and works of Benjamin Britten and has published a number of books on the composer, including six volumes of Britten’s Selected Letters for which he and his co-author, Donald Mitchell, received a Royal Philharmonic Society Award. He was Staff Musicologist at the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh before joining English National Opera in 1997. Philip was appointed Music Director of the Bury Bach Choir in 2001 since when he has conducted a wide range of choral works with the choir including the Bach passions, the Requiems of Verdi, Mozart, Brahms, and Fauré, Handel’s Messiah, Samson and Coronation Anthems, Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius and many other choral works from the classical repertoire. Philip is a highly-regarded musician who demands high standards from the choir and has made a major contribution to the choir’s reputation for excellence.

The Apex: Home of Live Music in Bury

Welcome to Bury Tango Bury Tango is a friendly and local Tango club which has built up its reputation over four years. As a group of volunteers we run a nonprofit organisation and all our funds are used to benefit the development of dance in the region. Although centred on Bury St Edmunds we do attract dancers from Stowmarket, Diss, Thetford, Cambridge, Bungay, Beccles, Woodbridge, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Sudbury, Lavenham, Norwich, Ely, Hadleigh and Colchester. We run classes and practicas on two nights of the week and in conjunction with other Tango groups in East Anglia we are helping to provide multiple opportunities for dancers to develop their Tango. We also run occasional Milongas (dances) at our base, the Hunter Club, and the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket. Argentine Tango is not a single, prescribed dance and what we offer is distinct from the Show Tango which is often seen on TV and which looks clever but difficult. Ours is a social dance which is built around improvisation in response to the music and not based on set routines. Basically, if you are able to walk, you can begin to dance Tango. It takes two to Tango - what makes the dance work is the connection between partners and this provides the subtlety and dialogue which makes the dance so appealing. Also the connection between different dancers is itself varied and this allows the individual to impart their own personality into the dance. Tango is a great way of conditioning your body, keeping fit and keeping mentally alert - in today’s world it can actually change your life. For us there is no more silently passionate dance.
