Once you’ve completed your online application to the University of Illinois, a Portfolio is required to complete your application. You cannot be admitted to an ART & DESIGN major without a Portfolio.

All MUSIC majors are required to complete the Music Supplement. The link to your Supplement will be emailed to you 24–48 hours after you submit your University Application.

Once you’ve completed your online application to the University of Illinois, a Dance Audition is required to complete your application. You cannot be admitted to DANCE without an audition.

ART & ART HISTORY (BFA) ART EDUCATION (BFA) ART UNDECLARED

INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE (BMUS), JAZZ PERFORMANCE (BMUS), VOCAL PERFORMANCE (BMUS); LYRIC THEATRE (BMA) Audition: Visit music.illinois.edu/audition-requirements for specific instrument requirements.

DANCE (BA AND BFA) The audition will consist of three parts: 1. Technique class with ballet, modern, contemporary African dance 2. Solo composition showing a piece you have choreographed. Dance should not exceed 3 minutes in length and should showcase your creativity and abilities as a performer. 3. Interview with a faculty member. Be prepared to discuss your experience, interests, and goals.

ACTING (BFA) Audition: Prepare 2 contrasting monologues of choice, not exceeding 2 minutes in length each. The selected monologues should be from different plays. Choose characters similar to your own age and experience. Contemporary characters without dialects are best. If you feel comfortable presenting material from Shakespeare or another classical playwright, you are welcome to do so, but one selection should be from a contemporary text.

Portfolio: Ten images indicative of what you consider your best work at the time of application. Work does not need to reflect intended major. Visit go.illinois.edu/submitportfolio to create an account in the ART & DESIGN portal and upload your artwork as 10 jpegs. The pixel dimensions should be between 1000 and 1500 in either height or width, and the file size should not exceed 500 KB.

THEATRE Once you’ve completed your online application to the University of Illinois, a Talent Submission is required to complete your application. You cannot be admitted to any THEATRE major without it.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLGY (BFA) SCENIC DESIGN (BFA) Set design COSTUME DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY (BFA) SCENIC TECHNOLOGY (BFA) Set creation LIGHTING DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY (BFA SOUND DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY (BFA) Portfolio with Interview: Provide examples of the work you’ve done. This may include sketches, drawings, or drafting; photos of costumes, scenery, or sets you’ve built or helped prepare; marketing material; art projects; photography, video, or audio files. The faculty recognizes that many students have not been able to document their experiences extensively. We encourage students to convey this information during the interview accompanying your portfolio review. Passion, commitment, intelligence, and imagination can be as important as experience. STAGE MANAGEMENT (BFA) Portfolio with Interview: Provide resume and examples of your stage management experiences. This can include a prompt script, production photos, and/or any show-related paperwork that you have created or helped prepare. In addition to Stage Management documentation, the faculty is interested in examples of any design/tech/crew work you’ve done. Non-theatre examples of organization, communication, people-management are also welcome. THEATRE STUDIES (BFA): Playwriting, Directing & Dramaturgy Interview: Provide a resume, a short essay or paper on theatre, or other short, creative written work. Students interviewing for the Theatre Studies Program are expected to have a strong academic record and a desire to study and explore the many aspects of theatre.

Theatre talent reviews may be submitted online via theatre.illinois.edu/auditions. Available in-person talent review/audition opportunities (on-campus and in Chicago) will be listed on the website (go.illinois.edu/theatreadmissions), if offered.
