CREATIVE CAREERS

THE CREATIVE CLASS

IN DEMAND According to the World Economic Forum’s The Future of Jobs report, “creativity” will be among the top three skills required in the global workforce by 2020. The top two are complex problem solving and critical thinking—skills that you will develop with an arts degree from Illinois. “Design thinking flips traditional technology product development on its head. The old way is that you come with a new product idea and then try to sell it to customers. In the design thinking way, the idea is to identify users’ needs as a starting point. Across corporate America, there is a rising enthusiasm for design thinking not only to develop products but also to guide strategy and shape decisions of all kinds. Venture capital firms are hiring design experts, and so are companies in many industries.” —The New York Times

JEREMY SHACKETT

URBAN PLANNING, BAUP 2016

Engagement Strategist Bang the Table, Boulder, CO

“My urban planning education at Illinois prepared me for my current position by giving me a deep understanding of the planning profession and how cities work. DURP’s professional resources and events gave me the opportunity to network and gain important skills outside of the classroom. Even though I am not currently a planner, I am able to ‘speak the language’ with planners I currently work with and can carry a toolbox for success that I can use for any career path.”

NICO BROWN

DANCE, MFA 2014 THEATRE STAGE MANAGEMENT, BFA 2010

Dance Artist and Arts Administrator

Thodos Dance, Chicago, IL formerly with Esoteric Dance “Dance at Illinois was a dream. I spent three years cultivating my choreographic inquiry, critically challenging my craft and orienting myself in the dance field. The questions that propelled my choreography at Illinois continue to shape my work in NYC. At Illinois, I developed deep, meaningful relationships with faculty, and they remain my biggest mentors and advocates. I am so grateful for Dance at Illinois, and I feel prepared for a lifelong career in the field. Photo by Scott Shaw

TYRONE PHILLIPS ACTING, BFA 2012

Actor and Artistic Director Definition Theatre Company, Chicago, IL

“The University of Illinois instilled in me that I was the future of the American Theatre. I got to explore my passions and learn more about the art of collaboration and how we can change lives through theatre. I am a leader in the arts community because of my alma mater, and I can’t wait to come back to create with future students.”

KATHLEEN FERRERO

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, BLA 2015

LANDSCAPE DESIGNER Ken Saiki Design, Madison, WI

“My studio classes in the Landscape Architecture program at Illinois helped me understand the variety of scales in which landscape architects work. Also, my professional practice class helped prepare me for what to expect in an office environment, and what would be expected of me as a new designer. I also had the opportunity to travel to several European countries where I gained a broader cultural perspective, knowledge, and education that I will draw from in my design work today.”

RYAN MARZOLPH NEW MEDIA, BFA 2014

POST PRODUCTION LEAD Snapchat, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

“The breadth of courses offered at Illinois allowed me to explore many avenues, which in turn opened many more doors to diverse career opportunities upon graduation. From my major coursework toward my BFA to my minor in Computer Science, I was able to craft a unique educational experience driven by my passions which prepared me to enter an industry so new it literally didn’t exist when I was still a student. To this day I find myself quoting the words of some of my most inspiring professors as their lessons still strongly influence the work I do every day.”

TASHIO MARTINEZ

ARCHITECTURE, BSAS 2009, M.ARCH 2011

INTERMEDIATE DESIGNER

WATG and Wimberly Interiors, Seattle, WA “I always loved the idea of a renaissance man when I was younger. The ability to be versed in many different areas of knowledge and expertise while at the same time truly understanding people and culture. For me, in order to make a good building, you must think at both a macro and micro scale in a network setting. Through my studies at Illinois, I gained the tools necessary to set me on my path to become an architect.”
