Happy: Norlington students share their results

Students can be proud of exceptional results NORLINGTON School and 6th Form maintained its position as a top-performing school after impressive results at GCSE and A Level. In just our first year of A Level results, just under a third of pupils have won places at a Russell Group university, ranked the best in the UK. Every student at the school who applied also secured a place at university, including top London institutions such as Kings College and Queen Mary’s. At GCSE, one in four students achieved three or more A and A* grades, despite the national grade average dropping for the first time in five years around the rest of the UK. Overall, 91 per cent of the triple Science students gained A and A* grades, while 97 per cent took home A*-C grades in Graphics. An impressive 72 per cent of students scored between grades 4 to 9, the equivalent of A*-C, in English and Maths, the new government standard for GCSE exams. A huge 83 per cent

of all students achieved A*-C grades in English and 76 per cent scored in the high-grade category for Maths. Almost one-third achieved A* or A. Our budding scientists, lawyers and engineers took their first giant leap towards successful careers with top grades in Maths, Science, Graphics and Languages. This year’s GCSE students were the first to experience the new grading system in English Language, English Literature and Maths, where instead of receiving the traditional A*-G grades, they were marked from 1 to 9 – with 9 being the highest. The new marking system will be phased in for all subjects over the next two years. Executive Principal Mr Hernandez said: “We are very pleased with another year of exceptional GCSE grades. “This builds on several years of outstanding academic performance at Norlington. “This includes 72 per cent of students achieving the new government standard in

English and Maths and one in four achieved three or more A* or A equivalent grades. We are very proud of all of our students. Norlington is a very unique school where a family ethos is the foundation upon which students achieve great things. “Staff and students work tirelessly to achieve the school’s aim: to become the No.1 boys’ school in the country. Our students deserve it.” Head of 6th Form Mr Georgiades said: “It is extremely pleasing to have got 30 per cent of students into Russell Group universities with our very first cohort. This is well above the historic average for the borough of Waltham Forest, which is very encouraging. “We are also pleased that every one of our students who applied will be attending university next year, which means we have delivered on our promise to start these young people on a path to success. Our students are well prepared to take up challenging degrees at top universities including Kings College, SOAS and Queen Mary’s. We wish them well.”

We’re ready for next year’s challenge Juan Hernandez, Principal of Norlington School and 6th Form, reflects on the school’s performance in the recent A Level and GCSE exams. of so much more and we continually challenge them to realise their full potential. They have responded by surpassing even our own very high standards. Across the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, we have smashed our own records to deliver truly exceptional results. In fact, 13 subjects delivered their best-ever GCSE results in 2017. The most pleasing aspect of this year is the continuing lack of disparity between

pupils from different backgrounds. Norlington truly lives its motto – ‘we learn together, enjoy together and achieve together’. Our first year of A Levels also produced some outstanding results. A highly impressive 30 per cent of our students have accepted places at Russell Group universities. Whilst we are pleased with these results, we remain committed to delivering even better A Level results in the future, just as we continue to do at GCSE. As a school we are never satisfied, we are always looking to improve, to get better. That is our challenge for next year. It is one we accept with relish.

At Norlington we expect only the very highest standards of achievement from our pupils. Between 2014 and 2016, Norlington School has been in the top four per cent of secondary schools nationally. We have consistently been recognised in the top 100 schools nationally by successive schools’ ministers, been one of the top five boys’ schools nationally and been inducted into the Mayor of London’s Gold Club for high-achieving schools in the capital. As a school with ambitions to be a world-class institution, our results have to be up there with the very best in the country. Whilst we celebrate this performance, we believe our students are capable
