CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE For an association like ARTBA that has been around since 1902, it should be no surprise that each year is likely to mark some important milestone in it’s history. 2013 just happens to be the 110th anniversary of the association’s first convention, which was held in Detroit. This year, we are excited to return to the Mid-West for our National Convention, held September 8-10 at the historic Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. This Victorian beauty is a grand, AAA-rated, Four Diamond property that sits just three blocks from Lake Michigan. Trip Advisor has rated it in the “top 25” U.S. luxury hotels. Since ARTBA’s early days, the convention has provided an annual gathering for industry leaders from across America to reconnect with one another, forge new alliances, share information, discuss transportation policy issues, and learn from speakers in the industry and business. 2013 will be no exception. Joe Calloway, author of the new book, “Be The Best At What Matters Most,” and his classic best-seller, “Becoming a Category of One,” will lead an interactive discussion to show how markets are won by companies that outperform the fundamentals, how to create relationships that become partnerships, and how the will to take action can become the most powerful differentiator. Calloway is a highly-sought business speaker and has worked with companies like Coca Cola, IBM and American Express. The program also includes a panel session with senior executives at some of the nation’s top engineering, equipment manufacturing, materials and contractor firms who will share their perspective on “big picture” issues likely to impact the industry’s future. And of course in what has become a centerpiece of the convention,

ARTBA’s top government affairs, legal and regulatory, and economics staff will provide you with briefings in their respective areas of expertise. Make sure to pack a pair of jeans and your leather jacket (if you have one), because on Monday, September 9, the ARTBA Political Action Team will host a reception at the world famous Harley-Davidson Museum. Like ARTBA, Harley-Davidson is celebrating it’s 110th anniversary and some of their most rare and classic bikes will be on display. We’ll also host a special dinner on September 10 to celebrate the election of Oldcastle’s Doug Black as the new chairman and announce his leadership team. Finally, please be prepared for one notable change at this year’s meeting. We will be missing something major— large reams of paper! That’s right, ARTBA is going digital. As part of the association’s commitment to embrace new technologies and reduce costs, the convention’s program of events will be available on your smart phone or tablet through the ARTBA meeting app, which you will be able to download at the registration desk, or in an email we will send before the event. For those of you that still prefer paper, the program of events will be emailed to you prior to the meeting in a printable format, and pocket-sized “schedule at a glance” cards will be available on-site. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our hosts, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers and the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association, for their financial support and leadership in developing this year’s convention and spouse programs! It’s going to be a great event, and my wife, Lou Ann, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Steve Wright, 2013 ARTBA Chairman President, Wright Brothers Construction Co., Inc.

the basilica of st. josaphat

What’s a basilica? This question is asked often. Dating back to ancient times, a basilica was typical of the indoor shopping mall—not a religious building at all. Basilica architecture was the style of the building. When Christianity became the religion of the empire (Roman, that is), our ancestors took over these amazing buildings. Built in 1900 and patterned after St. Peter’s in Rome, The Basilica of St. Josaphat has all the elements of a classical Romanesque basilica. It is recognized by the city of Milwaukee as an officially designated landmark. 2333 S. 6th Street Milwaukee, WIs. 53215 414.645.5623 www.thebasilica.org
