SUCCULENTS SURVIVE LONG AFTER THAT SPECIAL DAY

BY REBECCA WAER

April showers should bring May flowers, but this year in California our lack of showers has brought something else instead ‌ statewide drought. Now in the throes of its worst dry spell on record, California is working to save every last drop of water. What does this mean for California weddings? In short: succulents are in.

Brides may have their heart set on traditional cut flowers, but there are unexpected benefits to using succulents in a wedding. Succulents need very little water — in fact, they can thrive for up to two weeks without watering — and do well year-round in California (as opposed to certain cut flowers which are strictly seasonal and temperature sensitive). Given their low water demand, succulents can (believe it or not) help reduce last-minute wedding planning stress. Euri Wong, co-owner of Fleuretica, sees couples preparing their succulent centerpieces weeks in advance. “Succulents are great because not only do they offer a good variety of colors, but they’re low maintenance. Centerpieces can be done weeks in advance, so there’s less of a rush on the week of your wedding, which is defi nitely a benefit.” And forget what you thought you knew about plain green succulents. Echeveria, for example, offers dozens of species in various colors, textures, sizes, and yes, flowers, to choose from. Malinee Romero of the California Cactus Center urges couples to not overlook the beauty of succulents. She says she often sees people come in reluctantly just to check out their options and quickly become amazed at the variety succulents offer. “Once people come to our center, they see they can pick from many different colors like lavenders, blues, greens, pinks and whites. They think of succulents as ordinary, but when you come to the nursery people are amazed by how many varieties — some are fleshy, some are fuzzy, and are all full of different textures and colors,” says Romero. Centerpieces created with succulents provide beauty not only to a wedding, but also to the environment after the wedding is over. Cal Poly Pomona landscape architecture professor, Gerald Taylor, Jr., says succulents are a lasting, lovely and environmentally friendly wedding choice. “Their diverse forms, colors and textures make very creative and beautiful arrangements. And as a take-home centerpiece, they are some of the easiest plants to transplant into a garden or a bright location indoors. Succulents have thickened tissues that store moisture, making them drought-tolerant and ideal for Southern California’s arid climate. Overall, succulents are very easy to maintain. When in bloom many attract wildlife such as hummingbirds and butterfl ies.” Wong agrees, and says one of the charms of uscontinued on page 8 ARROYO WEDDINGS | 7

ding favors because of its special meaning as living tokens, representative of the couple’s love for one another. Whatever your style or wedding theme, give succulents a try. You just may fi nd they make a splash on your drought-friendly big day. ■ California Cactus Co. cactuscenter.com/contact Fleuretica fleuretica.com/blog Jolana Pineda Designs jolanapineda.com For design inspiration: Huntington Gardens’ Desert Garden huntington.org/WebAssets/Templates/content.aspx?id=494

ing succulents is the living factor. “After a wedding is over, cut flowers die. But succulents can be replanted and will continue to flourish — you have a sentimental, living token after the ceremony.” If you’re still stuck on traditional cut flowers, try combining them with succulents for a fresh, elegant arrangement. Jolana Pineda of Jolana Pineda Designs says certain flowers paired with succulents really make each other pop in a display. “My advice would be to use succulents as the focal ‘flower’ and make all other flowers secondary. Succulents combine very well with fi ne-textured, small-headed flowers like hydrangeas or classical flowers like roses. Succulents can also be used in traditional as contemporary floral arrangements, or they can work as the perfect link between both styles.” Not only can succulents provide fresh color, texture, and shape to bouquets, boutonnières, ceremony decor, and centerpieces, but they also make excellent wedding favors for guests. One popular succulent’s name, sempervivum, means “live forever.” Romero, Pineda, and Wong each see couples ordering this specific succulent as wed-

n a recent Saturday, Pasadena’s City Hall was the center of activity as photographers snapped pictures of brides, grooms and other members of wedding parties. Titus and Grace, a soon-to-be married couple who didn’t want to reveal their last names, hurriedly posed for photos before they raced off to attend their wedding ceremony. Grace, dressed in a long, white wedding gown, found a few seconds to say that she and Titus wanted wedding photos at City Hall because “our church is right across the street. And it [City Hall] is beautiful.” Nearby, a stretch limousine was parked in front of the building, waiting as more than 20 participants in another off-site wedding were having their photos taken. No doubt about it, Pasadena City Hall is a much-desired destination for wedding photos. There are several reasons why City Hall makes the perfect photo backdrop. The most obvious is the sheer beauty of the building, designed in a combination of Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival styles by architects John Bakewell Jr. and Arthur Brown Jr., and completed in 1927. Rob Greer, a Pasadena-based photographer who’s been taking wedding photos at City Hall for 10 years, says the building is popular because photographers do not need a city permit to shoot there. “It’s one of the only free places in the area. All of the other local locations require permits. It has convenient parking, so you can move in and out of there on wedding day.” The building, he adds, has both covered locations in the rotunda and walkways, and an open location in the central courtyard, enabling photos to be taken in any weather. “It’s uncommon to find a combination of all these factors in one place,” he says. Hall, expresses similar praise for the building’s accessibility and beauty. “There are a lot of other gorgeous buildings around City Hall, so it’s easy to have a variety of backgrounds for photos,” he adds. Some couples hold their weddings at City Hall. William H. Boyer, Pasadena’s public information officer, says the city does not keep statistics on the number of these weddings, but it is “probably not that many. Most people will go to places like Noor, in Paseo Colorado, or other rental places that offer the full, in-house food service, bar, dance floor … for the reception.” Several area wedding planners agree that City Hall is not a common site for weddings, and ceremonies that are held there typically are “do-it-yourself” affairs that don’t require elaborate wedding plans. Chabeli Sanchez, owner of P.S. & Associates Event Planning, recently planned a wedding at City Hall, which she says was her fi rst event at this venue. The bride and groom were married in the rotunda, and then served their guests dinner in the courtyard. At 9 p.m., the cityrequired time to leave the building, guests walked across the street to continue celebrating at Eden’s Garden Bar and Grill. Sanchez says it cost about $3,600 to obtain the permits needed to rent, set up and clean up the rotunda and courtyard, serve alcoholic beverages, and then clear the area of trash after the event. The city also requires

that alcoholic beverages be confi ned to the courtyard. “It’s a pretty doable space,” she says of City Hall. Last July, the city initiated a new fee schedule for permits to conduct an activity at City Hall. Private individuals, including brides and grooms, who are Pasadena residents must pay $317.06 to rent the courtyard and rotunda for a minimum of four hours; nonresidents pay $637.33. The hourly rates for set-up and cleanup are $133.44 for residents, $200.70 for nonresidents. The required alcohol permit costs a flat fee of $71 an hour, plus an additional $33 per hour to monitor alcohol use. There are additional costs to use the courtyard’s fountain on weekends and after 6 p.m. on weekdays, to clean and restock restrooms, and to clean and recycle trash. But there’s no charge to take photographs, and on weekends City Hall is often crowded with brides and grooms seeking space to take pictures. Boyer advises people to “have patience to wait their turn for the area they want. First come, fi rst served.” The city, he adds, “asks that the wedding parties have respect for the City Hall building and grounds. Pick up your trash, and no smoking — smoking cigars, cigarettes and other items. And NO alcohol.” ■ Jason Chen IL MARE PHOTOGRAPHY 626.696.3842 jason@ilmarephotography.com www.ilmarephotography.com Rob Greer ROB GREER WEDDINGS 626.523.3123 rob@robgreer.com www.robgreerweddings.com

he term bachelor party conjures many images; drunken debauchery, strippers, punishing hangovers, regrets and lost weekends. More recently, the focus of this rite-ofpassage has shifted to prioritizing inclusiveness, safe celebration and memorable themes. The term “bachelor” originally appeared in print in the 14th century in Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” and is the first known use of the word in reference to an unmarried man. But the origins of the tradition itself are steeped in history that can be traced as far back as 5th century B.C. when it is believed Spartan soldiers kicked up their warring heels and hosted feasts for soonto-be married comrades. Fast-forward centuries later, and bachelor parties attendees scandalized conservative society with their raucous tales of alcohol-fueled hi-jinks and dalliances with scantily clad women of questionable morals. It’s speculated that the change in tone started during the Victorian Era, when society’s gentlemen yearned for opportunities to socialize with acquaintances inappropriate to entertain as married men. In 1896, a party for entertainment tycoon P.T. Barnum’s grandson, Herbert Barnum Seely, was raided by law enforcement when it was rumored a local belly dancer would be performing nude. In the 1940s and ’50’s, the term “gentleman’s dinner” was coined and was usually hosted by the groom’s father. Theories abound on precisely when the get-togethers began to involve racier activities, but at some point in the 1900s, the term “dinner” was swapped for “party,” and nothing has been the same since.

Almost overnight, the goal of the bachelor party shifted from one of celebrating a man’s passage from single to married life to the over-the-top exhibitions of a groom’s last night of freedom before taking the plunge into matrimony. Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart’s infamous bachelor party in 1949 before his marriage to Gloria Hatrick even featured midgets springing up out of a serving dish. The trend of racy sex and alcohol-soaked bachelor parties has now come full circle back to more appropriate, but still creative, themed-events. Many attendees have learned that, with the proliferation of selfies, exposé Internet sites and a general lack of discretion in our informational age, very little done in public is truly private. Chris Easter, cofounder of the Web site The Man Registry (www.themanregistry.com) says “I’ve noticed more co-ed events and that couples are getting married a little older nowadays … We’re seeing weekend destinations trips more commonly than one-off celebratory nights. The Santa Barbara wine country is very popular now, as are scavenger hunts, extreme outings and anything from paintball to deep-sea fishing. The trend now is towards more responsible enjoyment.” Typically planned by the groom’s best man and the bride’s maid of honor, bachelor and bachelorette parties held in one form or another are as much a part of the fabric of American culture as proms, silver anniversaries and baby showers. ■
