THANK YOU AUNTIES!

May is traditionally Helper Appreciation Month in DB, a time to celebrate the women (and men) who take such good care of us, our kids and our homes. This year as a way to express gratitude, we’ve put together a selection of photos and messages sent in by readers. “Our helper Marecelle has been with us for three years now. She means a great deal to our family. The way my dogs cuddle with her says a lot about how caring she is. She is family and we are grateful every day,” Anna M Partridge.

“Thank you Mia for everything you do for us and for your love and patience,” Eimear McCartan.

“Auntie Sheila takes care of our family so she can support her own children back home. We hugely appreciate the sacrifice she makes and we are so glad that she is a part of our family,” Xing Ni Liu. “Marilyn is our fairy godmother who, by the wave of her magic wand, brings instant order to chaos. She was auntie to our sons, now in their forties, since they were 11 and nine years old; she's now grand auntie to our three grandsons. She spoils us every day, in every way. We all love and care for her very much; she is a member of our family,” Fatima Jowharsha. “Noel has been a part of our family for 16 years. He took incredibly loving care of my husband for nine years and he is now everything to me. He won the hearts of every member of my family from the very beginning and is, in every conceivable sense, a true part of our family. I consider him my third son,” Rani Gidwani. “Our helper Nida was an amazing carer for our daughter Shakira (now 20) and she still visits us often. So many happy memories especially when we played Scrabble together! Great fun! Nida never comes empty handed on her visits; she brings us oranges and chocolates. May God bless her!” David Burton.

“Our Tita Glory is amazing. She is a treasured and very well-loved member of our family. She looks after all of us and does everything with love and a smile. We can’t think of our home without her. Thank you Tita Glory, we love you very much!” Arabella, Penny, Ricky and Ann. 14

AROUND DB / MAY 2022

“Auntie Len’s big, beautiful smile has brought so much warmth to our home. We truly appreciate the way she has taught our daughter Eva to smile, laugh and be adventurous. Her good nature, kindness and wonderful sense of humour have been a light to all of us this year. Len, we have been so lucky to have met you!” Milan, Jo and Eva.

“It’s amazing how time flies. What started with one baby girl soon turned into one girl and three boys! And this year our last baby will leave for uni. Lydia, you have been with us through it all, helping to raise Niamh, Tiarnan, Ruaidhri and Odhran like they were your own. We are so happy that you have been part of our family for 23 years now,” Dana Winograd.

The only real gift we can give our children is an education.. A boarding school education ensures students gain good qualifications, confidence, independence and a breadth of interests - a true education for life! The environment of a boarding school is motivating, nurturing, caring and aims to give each child the opportunities to develop their personal talents to the full and achieve their academic potential. One of the key features of boarding school life is the wide range of activities and experiences, which gives boarders the opportunity to develop skills and interests beyond the academic curriculum; valuable life skills and interests that contribute to career developmentand adult life. At boarding school you are living in a community; you make friends for life, whatever part of the world they come from. Sports and hobbies, dance, drama, music, art, public speaking, aerobics, philosophy, pottery, gymnastics and much more are all on offer at most boarding schools. Life in a boarding school is excellent preparation for university and employment as it provides many of the non-academic skills that employers are looking for. You are encouraged to participate in team events and there are opportunities to be elected to positions of responsibility, such as Rugby Captain, Head of Boarding House, Prefect, Peer Mentor and many more. Finding the right school is a daunting prospect, many families rely on recommendations by friends, local knowledge or internet searches. Anderson Education are the UK boarding school specialists; our Education Consultants understand the impact of this emotional and financial decision on every family. Our invaluable experience and up to date knowledge will guide you through the process from recommending schools for your consideration, arranging for information to be sent to you and liaising with youand the school through the visiting, testing, registering and admissions process. We all want to provide the best education for our children - there has never been a better time to consider a UK boarding education – contact us today!

KAIJAI! THEO ROBINSON’S TOTALLY ZEN START-UP

THEO ROBINSON

Looking to fill time during lockdown by honing his entrepreneurial skills, DBIS student Theo Robinson, 17, has come up with KaiJai, a feelgood yoga mat that ticks all the right boxes. “KaiJai was born when I realised there was a lack of reasonably priced, high-quality, eco-friendly yoga mats available,” Theo opens. “So, I sat down with my mum [DBbased yoga teacher Lili Robinson] and we designed a yoga mat that would be suitable for all different levels, while being eco-friendly and stylish.” After six months’ research, Theo started small with an order of 120 5mm, cork-topped mats in July 2021. By January this year, he was back on the phone to the factory in Jiangsu ordering 200 easy-to-carry, 3.5mm mats, 100 topped in cork and 100 topped in polyurethane (PU). Theo is already selling his mats though Escapade Sports (www.escapade.com.hk) and on his company website (www.kaijai.store). “Getting into Escapade was no easy feat,” he says. “But with a lot of persistence and effort and maybe a little bit of luck, we did it. We’ve also just confirmed a partnership with Embody (www.embody.hk) here in DB. We’ll be selling KaiJai mats in their studio very soon.” So how does Theo account for KaiJai’s popularity? For starters, his mats are genuinely eco-friendly and fully recyclable: “So many brands are marketing their mats as eco-friendly, when they really aren’t,” he says. “Our mats are made in China because that was the only place we could find a manufacturer who met our demands to create high-quality mats at affordable prices, while still staying eco-friendly. We only use materials that are sustainably sourced. “All our mats have a natural rubber base which is spongy and protective, while being eco-friendly and biodegradable. And they are topped either with a thin layer of cork, which is antimicrobial and naturally replenishing, or with PU. The PU upper layer doesn’t contain any chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system, nor does it contribute to PH change in soil or water when biodegrading.” 16

AROUND DB / MAY 2022

LILI ROBINSON ON THE CORK MAT (3.5MM)

KaiJai’s price point is also right: Most eco-friendly mats cost upward of HK$800, Theo’s mats start at HK$480. “When buying from a big brand, you are often just paying a premium for the name, not the quality,” says Theo. “Our mat quality and materials are almost identical to some of the leading fitness and sport fashion brands but ours are around 25% cheaper!” That KaiJai mats look stylish was also something Theo prioritised from the get-go, and in selecting natural-toned cork and smart black PU for the uppers he has proven that sustainable can be chic. More importantly perhaps, all KaiJia mats are thoughtfully marked up with alignment lines for those who are serious about their yoga. “We have the central alignment line which helps with body symmetry. The staggered top and bottom end markers allow you to maintain a consistent stretch on both sides of the body, so you can monitor extension progress and avoid overstretching,” Theo says. “We’re also very proud of the materials we use in our mats and we are confident in their durability. Our design is lasered in so it will not peel or fade, and our cork and PU uppers will not chip or crack if used as instructed.” Having pulled off the deal with Escapade, Theo confesses his marketing campaign has been pretty laidback so far. “But we offer short-term promotions which helps drive sales,” he says, before pausing for a second, clearly listening to his inner Erik Finman. “In fact, we should make the most of this opportunity now. For the month of May, Around DB readers can get 20% off any of our mats and free delivery within DB if they use the code DBRESIDENTMAY when ordering at www.kaijai.store.” [PHOTOS BY Richard Gordon www.richardgordonphotography.com.hk.]

LUSCIOUS PICNICS! LINA TREECE’S LOCKDOWN BABY

LINA TREECE DEBUTING A MOTHER’S DAY PICNIC

You might think that party planning is a strange business to get into during a pandemic but according to eight-year DB resident Lina Treece, who launched picnic-planner company Luscious Picnics (@lusciouspicnics) in November 2021, you’d be very much mistaken. “We started right before the fifth wave hit, so it was very good timing,” Lina opens. “Because of Luscious Picnics, people have still been able to celebrate their important occasions in style, while following COVID-19 government guidelines.” From the start, Lina set out to provide a full range of luxury pop-up picnics, catering to everything from wedding anniversaries to baby showers and kids’ parties. She grew up in Spain and loves to throw a party on the beach but she will pop up a picnic pretty much anywhere in DB, including residents’ homes. “We have been adapting along with COVID-19 restrictions, so we have been organising picnics at home for families and also beautiful date nights for couples,” Lina says. “For larger, outdoor picnics, we have been providing one picnic table for every two people due to the two people per table restrictions.” So how does it work exactly? “I have a main picnic package for two adults that includes a low picnic table, tableware, a picnic blanket with cushions, and decorations for the specific theme they have chosen,” Lina explains. “Then I have a list of add-ons, including charcuterie boards, fruit platters, drinks, cakes, flowers, a sun shade, a lace tepee and of course extra guests. “We have a list of themes such as Mediterranean Vibes, Tropic Like It’s Hot, Gold & Glamorous and Feeling Romantic. Our main collaborator DB-based Let’s Party (@letsparty_deco) designs and personalises beautiful graphics for things like banners and cake toppers, so we can theme-up a picnic party any way a client wants. Clients can choose food, wine, flowers, dishware and decorations from our collaborators’ 18

catalogues. We collaborate with many businesses, most but not all DB-based. I love the concept of small businesses helping each other out, especially in these times.” Lina’s pop-ups really are luscious looking and it comes as a surprise that the part-time tennis coach and full-time mum doesn’t have a professional background in either styling or catering. What she does have though is years of experience in bringing people together. “I have been organising parties for family and friends since I was 20 years-old,” she says. “It has been truly a passion for me and I am so excited to have made it a business.” No doubt Luscious Picnics is a passion project but it’s also a well-thought-out business venture. “I realised there was a good market in Discovery Bay, with many children and outdoorsy people who might be interested in celebrating their special occasions with us,” Lina says. “And of course, we have the parks and amazing beaches. “In creating Luscious Picnics, I was inspired by a company on Instagram, @strawsnberries,” Lina concludes. “I saw a photo of their beautiful beach set-up in Barcelona, and I said to myself this is what I want to do. It has been my dream for some time to organise parties as a business and I have finally gone for it! My goal is to make event and picnic planning my full-time job, and I will hire a larger team as we get bigger.” [PHOTOS BY Richard Gordon www.richardgordonphotography.com.] ESSENTIAL EXTRA Should you book a picnic with Lina, be sure to addon a couple of her charcuterie boards, which come artfully laden with around five types of cheese and three types of cured meat, plus dried fruit, fresh fruit, nuts and something sweet. Know that Luscious Picnics also delivers its charcuterie boards to quarantine hotels and DB homes.

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST Teacher and artist – or is it artist and teacher? – Fiona Kennedy Altoft embarks on a new adventure with a decidedly DB perspective to guide her. Elizabeth Kerr reports PHOTOS BY Baljit Gidwani - www.evoqueportraits.com

W

hen Discovery College Head of Visual Arts, art teacher and artist Fiona Kennedy Altoft parks herself in front of her computer for yet another video chat, she’s the first to admit she’s of two minds about the phenomenon that has quickly jumped from the realm of sci-fi to daily life. She’ll cop to the fact that for the bulk of the past two years, her laundry has been heavy on shirts. Really, who’s needed fresh trousers every day?

She was right. She got married to Grant Altoft, also a teacher (also at DC in the Individuals & Societies department) and moved to Gold Coast at 24, where she taught and headed up a few art departments, most prominently at Marymount College Burleigh. “I got lucky with work and wound up as head of several departments at a few schools. [Marymount] was good to teachers. I wanted time to do my art and asked for a year off and they gave it to me,” she recalls.

Fiona is what you might expect of a working artist. Her blonde hair is offset by bright teal glasses and she’s sitting in her studio with canvases scattered in the background. A laptop tour reveals more of them, some being packed up for the move back to Australia this coming summer. The conversation jumps around, from creating art in the digital age and what exactly NFT art is (the jury’s still out on full comprehension of that one), to how quickly we’ve all adapted to life online.

That year off, 2007, was partially successful: Fiona achieved quite a bit but didn’t like it as much as she thought she would. “Art is lonely work, schools are very social,” she says with a laugh. “At home trying to paint by myself all day was isolating. After a few months I was ready to talk to someone, ready to be back in the classroom.”

“You get into habits fast,” Fiona says with a chuckle. “I was always saying I didn’t want to go online but then I found that teaching remotely has its advantages. I would look at the clock and say, ‘Oh, I’ve got a 40-minute gap, I’ll just have a lie down.’ You can’t do that at school.”

“You hear that kind of snobbery all the time,” she scoffs. “‘Oh, you’re not an artist, you’re an art teacher.’ It’s why I make my teachers exhibit. The students love it. I think some don’t even realise it’s possible to be a working artist-teacher. I find it exhilarating that they trust me, and that I have certain skills.” That belief slots nicely beside supporting students in their decisions, providing a safe space (her art room) for them to resolve issues and assuring them, at 12 years-old, that there’s plenty of time to blossom into the next Dalí.

EDUCATOR Fiona is a small-town girl, so to speak, and it shows in her gregarious nature and genuine affection for a good jabber. After growing up in Roma, a little town of just under 7,000, she went to secondary school in Toowoomba and then university roughly 500 kilometres away in Brisbane to study art at Queensland University of Technology. The BA in visual arts was followed by a degree in education, because Fiona was convinced teaching was in her future somehow.

Needless to say, Fiona bristles at the notion of “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.”

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Fiona was 40, when she decided to ditch Gold Coast for DB, proving you’re never too old to switch lanes. After winning Queensland’s Alan Drury Excellence in Teaching Award, she and Grant – now with children Isabella and AROUND DB / MAY 2022

Harper, 10 and eight at the time – decided a change of pace was in order. “At that stage it was do something drastic or we’ll retire here,” says Fiona. “Gold Coast was great: good school, nice students, great staff; it’s got a beach. There’s no reason to leave other than boredom. I took time off here and there to have kids, to travel, to work on my art. There was 17 years of that.” The Drury prize meant the family could afford to test the waters without fear of not being able to feed the kids. “That was it. We both wanted to teach overseas so we thought let’s do it.” Plans were helped along by an invitation to be artist in residence and teacher at DC, so nine years ago the Altofts made the move to Discovery Bay, where everyone found a liveable balance between small town and big city. Aside from the obvious appeal of jettisoning a sometimes 90-minute commute to work – “We got here and we were so excited to be able to walk to work” – DB ticked boxes for the Altofts from the get-go. “The kids were little and the community was a blessing,” Fiona says. “You soon know everyone in the plaza, and everyone in the pub. It’s very small town, and some people like that. Some don’t. We love it.”

PORTRAIT PAINTER Over the years, Fiona has car ved out an ar tistic legacy that has seen her work land in collections in Hong Kong, the UK, Canada, Italy, Thailand and at home in Australia. She’s won awards and exhibited around the world. And her painting, largely acr ylics, took a turn after the culture shock she claims she experienced upon arrival in Hong Kong. ( When asked about her childhood, she says simply, “I grew up ver y white.”) Surrounded by people from 80 different nationalities on any given day and what everyone in Hong Kong knows as ‘third-culture kids,’ Fiona found herself exploring issues of race, sexuality and gender through her art. Similarly, she found herself drawn to contemporary artists that explore the same themes: Deborah Roberts, Jordan Casteel, Ben Quilty. Fiona’s portraits, vibrantly coloured collages with bold brush strokes, mix and match her subjects to create new identities and so reinforce the fundamental universality of humanity. Like many artists in the 21st century, Fiona is leaning into the digital domain; check out her website, www.fionakennedyaltoft.com, or find her on Instagram. “Things like Instagram make for a whole new world, and it’s much smaller… There’s always going to be the hold-outs but in the last few years, art has become more about sharing and support,” she says, pointing to personal favourite Deborah Roberts, and how she’s exploited platforms like Instagram to be generous with her time and wisdom, as well as cut out the elite gallery element that demands large chunks of an artist’s income. All that being said, you can catch Fiona’s work in person this month. Though a spot at the Affordable Art Fair evaporated when the event wound up with less space than it needed, Fiona is showing at Hong Kong Arts Collective’s Square Prints Gen Two, launching May 7 at Musubi Hiro in Central (some sale proceeds are going to Impact Hong Kong). Come summer, the Altofts are heading back to Roma to decompress and think about their next move, possibly to Europe. “We travelled like maniacs when we got here, and in Europe you can hop on a flight for £20 and be in Amsterdam for the weekend just like that. You don’t get anywhere for that in Australia, and it’s so far from everything.” But art isn’t going anywhere, and Fiona is going to continue exploring the ideas she woke up to in Hong Kong.

“I remember my sister taking her husband from El Salvador back to the tiny town we lived in and not getting the support she thought she would,” finishes Fiona when asked about the story she’d like her art to tell. “Things are very fluid right now, so I’d like to send a message of acceptance.”

GARY STOKES WITH CHEF MEETA NANDA

A

Caribbean-style bar and grill when it opened on D’Deck back in 2006, Hemingway’s quickly established itself as a hugely popular community hub – somewhere DBers love to eat, drink and hangout. By 2017, it was vegetarian, well on its way to being vegan, right in line with owner, ocean conservationist Gary Stokes’ personal beliefs. “As my environmental profile expanded, I felt more conflicted running a restaurant that served meat and fish. I felt like a real hypocrite, frankly,” opens Gary, referencing his work with Sea Shepherd and his own NGO Oceans Asia. “The only remedy was to make Hemingway’s fully vegan, which we did in 2018. “We live in a world of 7.6 billion people, many of whom eat meat or seafood three times a day. This is unsustainable,” Gary adds. “While most people cannot go to sea for several months to save whales, sharks, turtles or fish, we

can all make a huge difference by simply looking at what we decide to put on our dinner plates. The ‘easy’ solution is a plant-based diet – going vegan.” Transitioning to a 100% plant-based menu was clearly a bold move but from the get-go, reactions were overwhelmingly positive, with the DB community embracing the opportunity to enjoy what Gary describes as “normal food” in a casual setting. “Our aim is to show people that you do not need to sacrifice what you love when choosing to go plant based,” he says. “We use our menu to encourage people to try plant-based food without preaching. “Whether you are a carnivore or already following a plantbased diet, we do not judge. Our philosophy is to let the food do the talking. We feel that so long as the food looks good, tastes good and is made from the best ingredients, the terms ‘vegan’ or ‘plant-based’ shouldn’t even be needed. At the end of the day good food is good food.”

THE MENU One of the first things you notice about Hemingway’s menu is that few of the dishes listed scream vegan or even vegetarian. It’s only after taking a closer look that you realise that all the dishes – even the Thai-style ‘fish’ cakes, Rudeboy chili, Malay ‘beef’ rendang and full English breakfast – are 100% plant based. “Joining the team in 2008, Chef Meeta Nanda brought along her culinary knowledge of vegan cuisine and worked to create a vegan comfort food menu,” Gary explains. “We wanted the menu to be big on meat-free versions of pub food classics, such as nachos, spaghetti bolognese, burgers and pizza. “Over the years, as veganism has become more mainstream, customers have become more receptive to trying new things, even ‘things’ that don’t look like they have meat in them, like Chef Meeta’s legendary nachos and potstickers.”

KOREAN BUDDHA BOWL

THE SPECIALS Gary is known for his inventive monthly promotions, and a special series of these kept Hemingway’s going (and DBers coming back for more) during the latest wave of lockdowns. I n M a rc h , ‘ B e e r & B u rg e r Thursday’ (a burger and two MALAY ‘BEEF’ RENDANG bottles of beer for HK$160) went down a treat, as did the ‘ B u b b l y S u n d a y P ro s e c c o Promo’ (HK$45 per glass, HK$200 per bottle). Memorably too, in February, Gary threw in a free bottle of red or white wine with any takeout orders over HK$600 on a Saturday or Sunday. “In January, we called for residents’ support during the daytime hours of operation as well as with takeaway/ home delivery,” Gary says. “The community was there for us, and now with restrictions easing, we’ll keep the special offers coming.” KALE, BEAN AND MINT SALAD

Hemingway’s is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. To reserve a table, book the space for an event or order takeout, call 2987 8804 or visit www.hemingways.hk.

THE MUSIC First and foremost a community bar, Hemingway’s is rightly billed as the home of live music in Discovery Bay. The last big band night was in January with Powerful Moss performing outdoors, but we can hope for more of the same in the nottoo-distant future. “We have random bands playing Friday and Saturday evenings, the likes of Grounded, Powerful Moss, Helium 3 and Saxon & Jarvis,” says Gary. “Then on Sunday, Jay Apungan plays an acoustic session outside. Sundays tend to have a mind of their own and often turn into an impromptu jam session.” AROUND DB / MAY 2022

knew by the time my daughter Amy was three that she had inherited her grandmother’s ‘consumer gene.’ From when she was very young, Amy was into pretty things (particularly shiny, pink pretty things) and she wanted lots of them.

Amy wasn’t born a window shopper. If she fell for a Hello Kitty lunchbox in a store, ‘just looking’ wasn’t enough, she wanted to own it. At this age, it was fairly easy for my wife and I to distract our budding shopaholic from potential pink purchases, but we quickly realised that we needed to teach her about money, and specifically that it doesn’t grow on trees. First lesson, and a hard one for any kid: You may have to wait to buy something you want. How to get this message across? In a store, I’d explain that we were there to buy a gift for a friend that day, and that I didn’t have extra cash in my wallet to buy something for Amy. If an expensive item caught her eye, we’d discuss why this purchase would have to wait until October (birthday month), or Christmas.

WANTS AND NEEDS Once Amy was five or so (able to add and subtract), we began to look at the prices for treats she wanted in the supermarket, and she’d help me count out the money. Most days we’d have enough money for a packet of crisps and a chocolate bar or two but occasionally she’d have to decide which item she wanted more. This decision-making process allowed me to introduce Amy to the concept of ‘wants and needs’ – did she really need two chocolate bars or would one suffice? Then we talked more generally about the financial expenses that Mummy and Daddy have to meet each month, such as groceries, school fees and electricity bills, and why finding the money for these has to be a priority. Amy began to understand that sometimes not all her demands could be met, as needs are more important than wants. From early on, we also talked about earning money – introducing the concept that people (Mummy and Daddy included) go to work in order to make a certain amount each month. We’re living in an age when children think milk comes from plastic bottles, fruit comes from grocery stores and money comes from the ATM machine. It was important to teach Amy that ATMs and credit cards aren’t a means of money on demand; rather, they are connected to your bank account, and you can only withdraw what you’ve saved. Even tiny tots can learn the value of money, where it comes from, and that it is finite.

KIDS NEED TO HAVE MONEY IN ORDER TO MANAGE IT

she quickly learnt how to make her allowance stretch. She discovered that if she blew it all on a Monday, there’d be no more treats until the following week.

INTRODUCING ALLOWANCES

From the beginning, we made it clear that Amy wasn’t being paid for doing her chores (these she knew she did for free) but we did give her the opportunity to earn bonuses for behaving well. Each week we started with a bonus but she knew it could be removed as a consequence of bad behaviour.

The best way to learn about money is of course to have a little of your own, which is where allowances come in. Due in part to her inherited shopaholic tendencies, we started Amy off with a small allowance age six. We gave her HK$100 a week, and out of this she knew she had to buy her own after-school sweets, sodas and stickers. Through trial and error,

The main reason we give kids an allowance is to allow them to learn to spend wisely, save and share. Remember piggy banks? Until very recently, Amy had three jars in her bedroom, labelled ‘Saving,’ ‘Spending’ and ‘Sharing.’ She learned to divide her allowance between the jars, using the money in her spending jar for small purchases, the money in the AROUND DB / MAY 2022

PARENTING

/

sharing jar for donations to various causes, and the money in the saving jar for more expensive items. My wife and I always kept an eye on the saving jar in particular. It’s great for children to have a goal, such as to buy a toy, but you need to set them up for success. Make sure the item is not so pricey that they won’t be able to afford it for months. Early on, we came up with a matching programme to help Amy reach her goal (get her toy) in a reasonable timeframe. Maybe we spoilt her but we put in a dollar, for every two dollars she saved.

MANAGING MONEY Now, aged 13, Amy has her own bank account. She handles her own monthly allowance, and I’ve made sure that it’s large enough to allow spending beyond what is absolutely necessary, but not so large as to seem inexhaustible. The amount she receives mirrors that of most of her friends, though one boy at school gets a lot more. This lad’s excessive spending power led to an interesting and, I think, valuable discussion recently about the realities of our family’s financial situation.

My wife and I continue to be very clear about what Amy pays for from her allowance. For example, we pay for things like ferry tickets and phone bills, she pays for ‘extras,’ like cosmetics or takeout from Starbucks. We pay for the clothes she needs, if she wants yet another pair of big-brand trainers, she pays for it herself. In order to encourage saving, I’ve taught Amy to write everything down – to ‘keep the books.’ Instead of relying on her end-of-month bank statement, she has a simple spreadsheet, with columns for the date, the allowance amount paid, and the running total. If she takes money out of her account, she notes down the date and the amount, and what she bought. This way she can track her spending, and her savings. Rather incredibly (at least to me), Amy does have savings, and she doesn’t let the money in her account fall below a certain amount. If a purchase would reduce her account below her set minimum, she waits until she has more money before making that purchase. Of course, there are occasions when Amy comes to me expressing a desperate need for some ‘essential extra,’ which her savings can’t quite cover. For this I’m grateful, as it has allowed me to open a discussion about borrowing and debt. We talked the other day about credit cards – how getting money in this way is like taking out a loan. Amy understands that if you don’t pay your bill in full every month, you’ll be charged interest and owe more than you originally spent. I cannot bring myself to charge my child interest, but I do make sure that any amount borrowed is paid back within the allotted time period. It’s clear to my wife and I that time spent with Amy on all of this could be one of the most rewarding investments we’ll ever make.

ECO-FRIENDLY HOME DECORATING Greening your home decor is easier than you might think, and not only will it reduce your carbon footprint, it could save you a heap of cash. Jane Drew reports PHOTOS COURTESY OF Pexels

H

ave nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” So said William Morris at a lecture before the Birmingham Society of Arts and School of Design in 1880. It’s still a good maxim to li ve (a n d d e c o r a te) by b u t f o r t h e contemporar y home decorator there’s something missing – there’s no reference to our desire to live in an environmentally conscious way. If Morris were lecturing in Birmingham this month, he would probably say: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be both eco-friendly and useful, or believe to be beautiful. So how do you go about creating an environmentally aware home filled with useful and beautiful eco-friendly pieces?

REDUCE YOUR SPENDING Tip one: shop less. Eco-friendly decorators aren’t blind followers of home fashion, nor do they shop for recreation. They might donate or sell items that aren’t ‘useful’ or that they no longer consider ‘beautiful’ but they won’t replace furnishings for the sake of it, and they’re unlikely to remodel their homes every couple of years to keep up with the Joneses.

Eco-friendly decorating isn’t about constantly buying new or more; it’s about breathing new life into old pieces and reworking what you already own.

UPCYCLE AND REPURPOSE The simplest and easiest way to green your home is to bring a few plants inside. In addition to improving the air quality, indoor plants are also a great way to brighten up an otherwise dull corner. If your home decor is looking tired, simply painting the walls can make all the difference. Choose eco-friendly paints that are free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be harmful to both your family and the environment. Another quick fix? Move the furniture around, refresh photo frames and rearrange your artwork. It may take a bit of work but DIY-ing your old stuff into new stuf f is more satisf ying than buying new. By switching up the upholstery on a faded sofa, you can reinvent a room. You can also restain or repaint wooden pieces to give them a fresh new look and cover any visible signs of wear and tear. If your creative side refuses to come out, hire someone else to do the job. Upcycling is much cheaper than buying new, and the upcycled pieces will still feel new to you. Finding new uses for old objects is another fun way to green your home. Turning a piano into a bookshelf or a phone booth into a couch is too much to ask of most of us, but a simple project like using an old trunk as a coffee table, or a vase as a cutlery jar can be an interesting, eco-boosting exercise.

TURN ON TO VINTAGE

DIY OLD STUFF INTO NEW STUFF 34

AROUND DB / MAY 2022

There are times, of course, when you really need a ‘new’ piece of furniture, and your most eco-aware option is to buy vintage. Investing in sturdy, timeless designs will ensure that your home decor never goes out of style and,

if the vintage item you find has stood the test of time thus far, it’s likely to serve you well long into the future. Assuming you want to shop locally, 2nd Chance in Mui Wo is a good first port of call for pre-loved furnishings of all kinds. The store stocks an impressive selection of second-hand furniture and home accessories. And if you’re after a vintage-look Chinese piece, head to one of the warehouses in Ap Lei Chau, where many of the wedding cabinets and so-called Ming chairs have been put together using wood salvaged from genuine antiques. If you can’t find anything to your taste locally, eBay is a great place to explore the vintage vibe though you’ll need to watch your carbon footprint.

THINK SUSTAINABLE If vintage really isn’t your thing, you’ll likely have to pay a bit more for contemporary pieces that are genuinely eco -friendly. Look to brands that are focused on ethical labour standards and fair trade; firms that give back to the artisans and communities who make their pieces and are passionate about cutting-edge design. Most importantly, choose pieces that are made from sustainable materials – anything from fast-growing bamboo to naturally replenishing cork. Recycled plastic, glass or aluminium can also be classed as sustainable in this context, since we are unlikely ever to run out of them. There are so many sustainable materials available, and in the hands of the right designer, they are varied enough in colour, texture and purpose to outfit an entire home. For textiles, think wool, linen, organic cotton and hemp; for rugs, sisal, seagrass, coir, jute, wool and bamboo. Wood is your friend, as long as its Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) cer tified or reclaimed, as is natural stone. Of course, all-natural marble or travertine tiles come with a hefty price tag but it works out cheaper to splurge on a quality sustainably sourced material that

will last a lifetime, than to pay peanuts for something that you will need to replace in a year or two.

DONATE WHAT YOU DON’T NEED When refreshing your decor, it’s likely that you’ll need to get rid of a few pieces, and these you can choose to donate or sell rather than trash. Even if you don’t make any money, the item has transferred its value to someone else (and more importantly, hasn’t ended up in a landfill). Don’t assume that just because it is used or old or no longer to your taste no one will want it. Buying, selling, and trading locally helps ever yone involved without harming the environment, and there are plent y of ways to do this within DB. You can place small household items, toys and clothes in the Environmental Toy Houses located at Brilliance Court, La Costa and Midvale Village. The items donated are collec ted by local social enterprise DB Mothers & Friends, which redistributes them to people in need. DB Mothers & Friends (find them on Facebook) also arranges door-to-door collections of larger household items for a small fee, with the next round of pick-ups scheduled for May 10. Alternatively, there are lots of DB-based Facebook groups for buying, selling and swapping items, as well as ‘swapping corners’ in many of the villages. Your unwanted armchair or bookcase may be just what someone else needs to complete their func tional, beautiful and eco-friendly home decor.

Scott launched MGL in August 2019, and he admits it was a tough time to get a new project off the ground. “When COVID hit just 12 months later, we had to reidentify ourselves,” he says. “I’d done a couple of household removals for friends so I got together with a local Chinese company who do all the professional packaging for shipping – for any business we get, they do the local side here in Hong Kong and I handle the international shipping.” MGL prides itself on providing comprehensive door-todoor solutions for its international household removals. It handles everything from packing and storage, to transportation and customs clearance. No shipment is too small, and shared container spaces can be negotiated as required. Family car transport is a specialty at MGL, not least because Scott has built up relationships with a number of leading car manufacturers over the years. “My main business has been car transport, not just second38

EXERCISE FOR PREGNANT MUMS

Childbirth is like running a marathon, you have to train for it – gently PHOTOS COURTESY OF Pexels

WITH CLEARANCE FROM YOUR DOCTOR,

you can stick to your regular exercise regime for at least the first trimester. Further into your pregnancy, you will need to adjust the way you exercise to accommodate your changing body. You can introduce props and apparatus, like birth balls and exercise bikes, to ensure your safety and that of your growing bump.

IF YOU’RE NEW TO EXERCISE,

start with five minutes per day and increase this by five minutes a week until you are working out for half an hour a day. Try brisk walking, jogging, or any other low-impact aerobic exercise that feels comfortable. The more you keep active before you give birth, the easier it will be to get in shape post pregnancy.

SWIMMING IS THE SAFEST EXERCISE

for pregnant women because almost the entire body is supported by the water. You can target different muscle groups by practising a variety of strokes. Then, as your pregnancy progresses you can do leg flutters and leg lifts while hanging poolside, rely on kickboards for added flotation support, or simply tread water. AROUND DB / MAY 2022

PRENATAL PILATES STRENGTHENS

the pelvic floor to prepare the body for birth, and it can improve body alignment and help minimise back pain. Pilates is a great way to exercise without putting undue stress on the joints, and it improves flexibility. It can also relieve common pregnancy woes like thoracic pain, ligament pain and sciatica.

DO YOUR PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES

regularly – aim to complete three sets of eight to 10 squeezes each day. This will strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which are lengthened and weakened during pregnancy and after childbirth. Pelvic floor muscles sit between your pubic bone at the front and your tailbone at the back, they support the bladder, bowel and uterus.

GETTING BIRTH FIT

is about setting yourself an achievable exercise routine, while preparing mentally and emotionally for the task ahead. A fun way to do this is to sign up for a couple of prenatal exercise classes. Not only will you get expert fitness/ wellness advice, you’ll also meet up with other mums with whom you can share experiences, hopes and fears.

RELY ON REFLEXLOGY TO SOOTHE

the aches and pains in your lower back, pelvis and joints that are taking a beating from your growing belly. Reflexology can also reduce stress, and help to restore the body’s equilibrium. Practitioners believe that regular treatments shorten the duration of labour, and result in many women requiring less pain relief.

LIFTING WEIGHTS DURING PREGNANCY

can help you stay fit, and prepare your body for parenthood. When done correctly and with the appropriate weight, strength training protects your core and lower back. It helps with posture changes, and helps build or maintain endurance, something you will definitely need during labour.

PRENATAL YOGA TEACHES FORMS OF BREATH that can

help alleviate heartburn and morning sickness, and help you push or control the urge to push during labour and delivery. It’s a great way to beat stress and improve your flexibility. What’s more, certain poses can shorten the birth canal up to 30% when practised during labour and delivery. 42

ALL-AMERICAN ROAD TRIP Time to rent a convertible and tear down the Pacific Coast Highway PHOTOS COURTESY OF Pexels

THE PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY snakes some 198

kilometres along the California coast, and has been designated an All-American Road, one of the country’s most scenic. Hugging the cliffs, it’s extremely narrow in places with sharp drop-offs providing glorious views of the ocean below. There are amazing places to stay along the way.

IN PFEIFFER BIG SUR STATE PARK

the roads and trails are lined with redwoods, sycamores and ferns. Head down Sycamore Canyon Road to Pfeiffer Beach, a long-time hippie haunt known for its ‘good vibrations.’ The crescent-shaped beach is dominated by a huge, arched rock formation through which surf and sunlight stream in equal quantities.

PICTURE-PERFECT CARMELBY-THE-SEA comprises

whimsical cottages, inns, shops and galleries. It’s home to artists, poets, actors and the seriously well-heeled. Take a walk on the mile-long Carmel River State Beach, visit the 1919 home of poet Robinson Jeffers, and treat yourself to a round of golf at world-class Pebble Beach Golf Links. 44

BIXBY CREEK BRIDGE is

one of the world’s highest single-span bridges, arching 80 metres high and 200 metres across. Lauded for its graceful architecture and magnificent setting, it was completed in 1932, five years before the Golden Gate Bridge came up in San Francisco Bay.

THE ROAD TO MONTEREY

is lined with pretty beaches from which you can spot all kinds of marine life, including sea lions, harbour seals, bat rays, pelicans and dolphins. Stay at Cannery Row in Fisherman’s Wharf, where the old canning factories have been converted into a gentrified strip of hotels, gift shops, seafood restaurants and bars.

RETRO-HIP SANTA CRUZ

is best known for its beach boardwalk and ‘50s-style amusement park. As a tourist you feel like you’ve walked straight on to a film set, and the 1987 vampire movie The Lost Boys was in fact filmed here. You meet surfers, hippies, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs (slumming it) and loads of students.

ALL HAIL BIG SUR: a 145-kilometre stretch of pure scenic bliss. Here

the coastline gets truly dramatic – elemental even – as massive waves beat against the rocks and towering redwood groves stretch skyward. It’s easy to understand why Henry Miller, who lived in Big Sur for 18 years, said it was here that he learned to say amen.

of kilometres without their total rebellion. The right mechanism is a work of athletic art and would probably go alone were it possible, while the left appendage is medically quirky, constantly asserting itself by way of irritating injuries. No clean break like the snapping of a dry branch, but enough to seek the indignity of treatment. And it conspires to get me lost, sometimes driving me back to the start in a perfect circle, legs acting like a protractor in a kid’s geometry class. A 30-kilometre mountain hike in France with friend Carina was more an embarrassment than a life-threatening mistake, leaving us back at square one after a delightful morning. Left leg wounds have been the result of stupidity or lack of focus. Like Roger Federer (I love the comparison) who twisted his knee and spent six months in rehab after removing his twins from the bathtub. My own impairments are nothing if not varied: broken ankle, fractured ankle, an annihilated ACL, massacred meniscus, DVT twice and a shin splint.

Putting yourself out there is always a positive even if you end up back where you started, says Peter Sherwood. Focus on the journey not the destination PHOTO COURTESY OF Pexels

y Left Foot is the 1954 autobiography of author, poet and artist Christy Brown. One of 13 surviving children born into poverty in Ireland, cerebral palsy restricted his movement to only his left foot. Typing an award-winning book with just a toe was a staggering achievement. It reminds me of my left leg – and there the comparison comes to a juddering halt. But I can still discuss my lower limb which I persuaded, with permission of the opposing extremity, to hike thousands 56

AROUND DB / MAY 2022

It would be easy to blame my directional woes on the offending limb. It would be, it is, and I just did. What else can I hold responsible for my ambulatory inadequacies? I made getting lost a virtue by insisting it is only then that we discover unexpected people and places. I get to be viewed as wildly contrarian – and mad. I once walked three people up a hill into dense cloud having convinced them I was the terrestrial version of Henry the Navigator. I blurted out the old chestnut, “If I don’t know where I am, I change where I want to be,” and added as an aside, “I’m not lost in the traditional sense, but exploring new opportunities.” After they threatened to push my folksy rear off a cliff, I harangued them with a sermon, explaining that if they weren’t shivering with cold and in danger, they’d have no interesting after-dinner conversation. In the Italian mountains I got more lost than Percy Fawcett in the Amazon. I convinced the girl with me to aim for a village 10 kilometres distant. It was the wrong way but turned out to have been voted the prettiest village in the country, not too shabby for a random choice. Being lost I’ve met people who invited me home to stay. (The 14th century meaning of lost was ‘wasted, ruined, spent in vain.’ I’m more the 16th century version, ‘no longer to be found, gone astray.’) As for the wonderful three-hour mountain circuit with Carina, I remain torn: Was it a waste of time, or a memorable 180-minute chunk of life? It was both, the difference is a hike forever etched on my memory. My advice? Get lost! Peter Sherwood has lived in DB for 20+ years. The former head of an international public relations firm, he is the author of 15 books and has written around 400 satirical columns for the South China Morning Post.
