On September 20, Lantau Boat Club and the Discovery Bay Yacht Club took part in Bartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bash, officially the biggest sailing race in the world. DC STUDENT PROTEST Hong Kong Disneyland

A group of Discovery Bay students protested on September 12 in support of a group of workers who lost their jobs without notice or compensation as a result of the closure of a Disney merchandise factory in Shenzhen. The students, who are part of the DC Labour Rights group, hope the protest will help the workers gain the appropriate compensation. To find out more, visit the DC Labour Rights Facebook page.

HSBC FUNDRAISING WALK Lantau Island

Headed up by Cheung Sha resident Linoy Kidd, a group of over 50 HSBC employees walked a 100-kilometre loop of Lantau on the weekend of September 19. The 27-hour-15-minute hike was done in the name of charity, with the team raising funds to build a school in Nepal in partnership with BuildOn. Some of the group then travelled to the Nepalese village of Kheda on September 26 to assist in the actual building of the school. DOLPHIN QUEST Lantau waters

On September 12, Lantau Boat Club organised a 72-kilometre paddle around Lantau to raise funds and awareness about the threats facing the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s endangered Chinese White Dolphins. Earlier this year Hope, a Chinese White Dolphin, died as a result of injuries believed to have been sustained in a collision with a Lantau tour boat. On the day, HK$20,000 was raised to support the work of DB eco charity Plastic Free Seas.

Two Discovery Bay Recreation Club (DBRC) junior teams collected season trophies at the Hong Kong Tennis Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual awards night on September 7. The Under 18 Division B team lost only one match during the season and took champion honours on a count-back, while the Under 12 team collected runner-up medals for a season in which they lost only two matches. MEET AND GREET COFFEE MORNING Discoveryland, DB North Plaza

The At Home in DB coffee morning on September 10 was a success, with some 50 residents getting together, making new friends and discussing the ins and outs of life in DB. A highlight of the event was a talk on customs relating to the Mid-Autumn Festival. Funds raised (HK$3,300) went to DB charity, DB Mothers and Friends to help with its work redistributing unwanted furniture items to Hong Kongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needy.

Marking the International Day of Peace on September 21, the Imagine Peace Festival on the weekend of September 19 offered up music, yoga and plenty of good vibes. Organised by Imagine Peace and founded by Lantau resident Kay Sugisaki, the festival is run entirely by volunteers and this year, funds raised went to the Nepal relief effort. Like many DB girls her age, Ngai Ning Yu loves her little sister, playing piano and horse riding. But unlike most other 11-year-olds, Ngai Ning has just held her first solo art exhibition. Melissa Stevens reports Ngai Ning Yu in her DC classroom with featured painting Candylicious

rom a detailed pencil rendering of activist Nelson Mandela to vibrant landscapes that burst from the canvas, it’s easy to assume the accomplished art in the I Love exhibition is the work of an artist many times Ngai Ning Yu’s age. But while Ngai Ning is young – born and bred in Discovery Bay, she’s 11 years old – her talent and aptitude for drawing is already an old story. Ngai Ning’s parents, Heidi Lam and Jacky Yu, first noticed Ngai Ning’s ability at the tender age of two. “She was able to draw simple people at two years of age and started some preschool drawing classes,” Heidi says. “At three years old, she started to have one-on-one lessons here in DB with a personal art teacher, Hung Hei Chan.” Having enrolled at Discovery College (DC) in Year 1, Ngai Ning extended on her extra-curricular art classes by joining Clement Art School in Tung Chung, and studying with head teacher Derek Kwok. “I draw and paint the people and things that are part of my life. I love painting,” Ngai Ning says with a grin. “Art is a challenging topic to do well in, as it takes time, hard work and practice,” she adds. Heidi, who has a file of more than 900 drawings completed by Ngai Ning over the years, describes her daughter as hardworking and dedicated to her art. “During school time, Ngai Ning spends five to six hours a week doing art classes [after school] and during the holidays she increases that to eight to 10 hours a week,” she says. “People say she is so talented but to do well she is also really hardworking – she has been studying for more than eight years.”

travelling overseas to Sydney, where it will be shown at Clement Art School Epping Gallery. The planning for I Love began two years ago with the Clement Art School. It features about 20 artworks in a variety of styles – sketches, portraits and oil paintings – created in 2014 and 2015. Most were made at Clement Art School, though a few are from Ngai Ning’s personal portfolio. “With difficulties like frustration and time management, this project has really brought art to a whole new level for me,” Ngai Ning says. “It’s been fun but at the same time it’s challenged me with my art skills. The exhibition records happy moments in my life. It can explain who I am, where I’ve been and what I do as hobbies.”

Derek enthuses that I Love expresses the personal journey of a little girl from innocence to adventure, darkened by the anxiety of meeting people’s expectations. “It’s an epic of fading childhood projected via the artist’s family members, especially her beloved sister,” he says.

Speaking about his student, Derek explains that Ngai Ning’s talent was evident from the time she joined Clement Art School. “She was a quick learner and very skilful at drawing at that young age,” he says. “Very soon she developed herself into one of the best students in our school. Her skills are well above other students of a similar age and her ability is all-rounded. She has the patience to produce highquality works and is very creative. “At age 11, Ngai Ning already has great potential,” Derek adds. “We have high hopes that she will become a promising artist.” Ngai Ning’s DC Year 7 art teacher, Dion Kay, echoes Derek, explaining that he recognised her maturity as an artist the first time he set her a free-drawing exercise to paint a self-portrait. “Her skill and understanding of how to put things together is amazing,” Dion says. “She finds a different angle and takes it further. Students at her age can need a lot of direction but she is self-directing, which is something that doesn’t usually happen until Year 9 or 10.” Ngai Ning credits her three art teachers, Derek, Dion and Hung Hei, with making I Love possible. She says they have inspired her creativity and taught her many new skills, as well as supporting her in her solo show.

Artist in residence Ngai Ning who is now in Year 8 at DC, will turn 12 in November. Like many DB residents she loves the local lifestyle and nature, and her art reflects this. As she talks me through some of her paintings in the DC art room, I am particularly drawn to two of her pieces: Black Siena, a charcoal on paper, and an oil on canvas entitled Spring Peace. Both were inspired by the local landscape. October 2015

PROFILE Watching her giggling with her little sister, I am struck by how familiar nine-year-old, Year 5 DC student Yue Ying Yu looks. And then I realise her portrait, Candylicious, is the featured artwork from Ngai Ning’s exhibition. Ngai Ning explains that she particularly likes doing family portraits: “I like drawing nature, my family and sketching realistic people, especially my very cute younger sister.” As Dion mentioned, one of Ngai Ning’s talents is the ability to take her art further than you would expect. As if to prove this, she explains that her sister’s portrait has a double, even triple meaning. “Yue Ying really likes candy because it’s sweet and she is also a sweet person,” she says. “And the theme for the [paint] spots is candycoloured, so I used a lot of pink and blue pastel colours.”

SWEET POISON With a slew of bad press and negative opinion, sugar is having a hard time of it. Angie Bucu digests the bitter truth

n March this year the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued new guidelines for daily added sugar intake recommending no more than 10% of calories, that’s 50 grams or 12 teaspoons for adults. For additional health benefits it suggests we aim to reduce this to 5%. What with our sugary morning coffee or tea, that sweet pick-me-up pastry mid-afternoon, and comforting latenight chocolate bar, there’s no denying that most of us are ‘enjoying’ over six to 12 teaspoons of added sugar a day. And note that the demonization of sugar isn’t focused solely on the sugars added to processed food and sugary drinks,

like glucose, fructose and sucrose, it also includes natural sugars, like honey and freshly squeezed and concentrate fruit juice. That’s everything right, other than the sugars occurring naturally in whole fruits, vegetables and milk. Paula McQuillan, nutritionist and health coach at Nourish Me Natural and a 14-year DB resident, sees the WHO recommendations as wholly positive. “The science which links sugar to poor dental health, being overweight or obese, liver disease, diabetes and other chronic health conditions must not be ignored,” she says. “It’s definitely time we get it all out in the open to help people make

informed choices concerning the amount of sugar in the food and drink they consume.”

The health link The government estimates that Hong Kongers consume twice as much sugar per day as they should, however, a recent Euromonitor report puts us at just above the new upper limit at 53.5 grams per person per day. This is seemingly good, compared to the US at 126 grams per day, and Germany and the Netherlands at around 102 grams per day. However, a 2014 Department of Health survey found that almost 39% of Hong Kong adults are overweight or obese.

Graeme Bradshaw, naturopath and founding director of DB’s Integrated Medicine Institute (IMI), confirms that health issues related to sugar intake, such as obesity and diabetes, are now more common in Hong Kong. The latest (2011/ 12) figures indicate that the obesity rate among primary school students is around 21%. Research is showing consistent relationships between fructose (in particular) and chronic conditions, including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and other forms of metabolic syndrome. Scientists claim that high consumption of fructose may contribute to insulin resistance and other complications, including liver damage. Paula is quick to point out that our bodies simply don’t have the physiological need for all the added sugars that have found their way into our diet. The revised WHO guidelines are also supported by evidence linking sugary food and drink to higher levels of tooth decay. Stella Phillips, dental health educator at Bayside Dental here in DB, welcomes the new guidelines but suggests we also reduce the frequency of our sugar intake. “Sugar reacts with the bacteria in plaque and produces harmful acids for up to one hour after eating and drinking,” she says. “So it’s important to have sugary food or drink just at mealtimes.”

Industry in denial The WHO report centres on the sugars that are added by manufacturers – the ones many argue are hidden from plain view. As Paula says: “What we put on our plate is heavily influenced by the food industry giants and clever marketing.” It is this industry that argues that the science is wrong and if sugar is consumed as part of a balanced diet it is not harmful. Yet sugar is an essential component of processed food, making it more palatable and

acting as a preservative. It is therefore easy to deduce that the added sugar, often in the form of high fructose corn syrup (or one of 57 other aliases), in processed food isn’t required for a balanced diet and results in the consumption of calories with no nutritional value, while creating health risks. With this in mind, some governments have taken drastic steps, including legislation, to curb our consumption of processed food, and sugary food and drink. UK supermarket chain Tesco banned Ribena and other sugar laden fruit drinks that are marketed to children in September. Generally, though, the industry is slow to act. Take Nestle for example. In 2012 it agreed to cut the sugar content in 20 of its global breakfast cereals by 2015. The obvious question: Why does this take three years?

In Hong Kong, the Centre for Food Safety’s (CFS) committee, responsible for recommending policy to reduce sugar in pre-packaged foods, says measures will be recommended and implemented gradually. The initial focus will be on reducing sugar in non-alcoholic drinks and juices. Disappointingly, these reduction measures will not be made mandatory.

How much is too much? A growing number of us are already opting to cut sugar out of our diets. However, many of us still don’t realise just how easy it is to consume more than the six to 12 teaspoonfuls recommended. Let’s take a typical afternoon-slump snack of iced coffee (Frappuccino) and a muffin from Starbucks. According to CFS, this amounts to about 49 grams  October 2015

of sugar (12 teaspoons) – 28 grams for the iced coffee and 21 grams for the muffin. Of course, this assumes that the coffee comes with sugar, which it does at Starbucks. And what about that gin and tonic after work, while catching up with a friend or on the ferry? That’s eight teaspoons of sugar per standard drink, right there. You may also be surprised by the high sugar content of many breakfast cereals. In leading brands of fruit, nut and seed muesli, marketed as ‘healthy’, sugar content ranges from 23 to 25 grams per 100 grams. Assuming a serving size of at least 50 grams for an adult, this is already three teaspoons of added sugar, or half the recommended daily allowance. Fruit yogurts are also serious offenders, often containing around 15 grams of sugar per 100 grams. With a typical serving size of 125 grams, this amounts to 4.5 teaspoons of sugar. Of course, it’s easy enough to control your sugar intake when you’re eating at home but many of us DBers eat out regularly, which can be a problem. CFS has some useful data on the sugar and other nutritional content of meals at various chain restaurants and cafés throughout Hong Kong, as well as various brands of prepacked foods and drinks. Get detoxing!

Tips on cutting ba

Read nutrition labels and ingredient lists to understand the extent of your sugar intake. There are plenty of apps that convert this information into meaningful data but the simple method is to divide grams by 4 to give you teaspoons of sugar. A simple piece of advice: avoid products where sugar content is shown as double digits. Eat whole fruit rather than fruit juice or dried fruit. The fibre helps with the absorption of the fructose, making it a better option. Use healthy alternatives, like coconut nectar, maple syrup or green stevia powder, sparingly. Raw honey is beneficial since it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels quickly; it may also contain useful antioxidants, amino acids and vitamins. Or try medjool dates, a wholefood packed with dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals, as a sweetener in your recipes. Detox painlessly by resetting your taste buds. Our taste for sugar adjusts quickly and after a few weeks even a small amount will add a lot of sweetness, so don’t worry too much about withdrawal symptoms. You’ll soon find that the natural sweetness in fruit and vegetables is heightened and sugary processed foods are almost sickening.

Having attended Discovery Bay International School herself and loved it, Talla Buffery says it’s easy to understand why so many DB teens are deciding to go back to school to teach

his summer as I returned from university in the UK to take up my regular three-month internship at Around DB, I couldn’t wait to find out what my former classmates were doing. As you’d expect, a fair few were waiting tables and working in shops over the long vac, a couple were trying their hand at corporate internships, but a big trend I spotted, amongst those on their gap year, was going back to school to teach. Jonny Healy and Austin Robertshaw, both on gap year and both 18, are currently working at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) as educational assistants. They put me in touch with Chris Gist, 18, and JeanPierre Nixon, 19, who both taught at the school in 2014. All DBers at one point or another, I asked the boys what it’s like to teach school, and how easy it is to make the transition from student to teacher.

Jonny and Austin Born and bred in Hong Kong, and schooled at Discovery College through Year 8 to 13, Jonny has lived in Discovery Bay his whole life. Now into his second gap year, he has signed on to continue working at DBIS for another year as an Information and Communications Technology (IT) educational assistant.

“Before starting at DBIS, I didn’t really know what to do with my time,” Jonny admits. “Apart from rugby training, I was just sitting at home playing Skyrim all day.” Now ready to move past communicating with dragons and weapon crafting, Jonny is considering teaching as a potential career. He says that being at DBIS has given him the perfect opportunity to experience working with kids and managing the workload, and he continues to enjoy every aspect of his job every day – even good old lunchtime duty. Discussing teaching, Jonny shares that one of his favourite moments was informing a student that every snowflake is different. “It completely blew her mind,” he recalls. “It may seem like such a small thing, but it’s at times like these that I realise just how much I enjoy working with kids.” Having just joined DBIS in August on his gap year, as a Design Technology, Food Technology and IT educational assistant, and with plans to study at the University of Leeds in the UK in 2016, Austin is the newbie of the group. From weekly shops down at Fusion to creating new exemplar projects for students, he says he is always busy and there is a lot to learn. “DBIS is a fantastic school and it has completely widened my experience already in the first week of working here,” he explains.

Enrolled as a student from 2001, Austin attended DBIS from kindergarten to Year 6. He says that he always wanted to return to the school and give back to the community – something DBIS prides itself on. “It was an obvious choice for me, choosing to work here,” he explains. “Both staff and students are incredible and very friendly; it’s the perfect opportunity for me to learn new skills and get experience.”

Chris and Jean-Pierre Chris, currently studying in Australia at Monash University, worked at DBIS as an IT technician for most of his gap year, December 2013 to January 2015. A former student, he schooled at DBIS from kindergarten through Year 6, just like Austin. On why he took the teaching job, he says simply: “I knew working at a school would provide me with a different sort of experience than working in retail or in a restaurant. I knew I would enjoy it more.” Chris’ role included data entry and managing the school’s hub and Moodle system. Always the joker, he points out that his job not only gave him plenty of new responsibilities but also a few special privileges. “For one, I could use the [teacher-only] lift to get to the second floor,” he says. “For another, I could go outside without having to wear a hat.” (In their primary years, DBIS students can’t step foot  October 2015

Interestingly, Chris says he quickly became comfortable working alongside his former teachers – one being his Year 6 teacher, now his boss and deputy principal of Creative Solutions, Ben Loran. “He’s a great guy – I just had to get past not calling him Mr Loran anymore and just calling him Lil’ Ben,” says Chris, who is now over 6-foot tall. Reflecting on his time at DBIS, Chris adds: “Due to a perfect attendance record in Ben’s Year 6 class, I was immaculate in my work performance.” With this much confidence, it’s clear that studying and working at DBIS has set Chris up for the future, for university and beyond.

Sailing through kindergarten to Year 6 at DBIS, Jean-Pierre distinctly remembers being taught by Ben back when Anne-Marie Naughton was principal. Like Chris, Jean-Pierre came to work at the school during his gap year, June 2014 to September 2015. He is currently studying at McGill University in Canada. Passionate about sport, Jean-Pierre delighted in his six months as a Physical Education educational assistant, involving himself in many duties such as the planning of Sports Day and the maintenance of sports equipment. “Kids always make me laugh,” he says with a smile. “What I enjoyed most was seeing them enjoy themselves. I was able to share my passion in a way that would help them improve.

“As a teacher you are responsible for the education, health and safety of students, as well as ensuring that they are enjoying themselves in the learning environment,” Jean-Pierre adds. He believes teaching has helped him learn essential life skills, like patience and listening; skills that he wouldn’t have learnt in a ‘normal’ business environment.

as possible,” she says. “Welcoming back students and embracing their talents and enthusiasm is a way of doing this. I think it is a great compliment that they want to return.” Here, Ben adds that without exception, the students who have taught at DBIS have been positive assets to the school. He believes that other schools would absolutely benefit from employing gap year students. “The fact that I have taught so many of the returning students is something that is personally very special to me,” Ben adds. “It’s so nice to see them become the adults we hoped they would, and the fact that they want to come back and teach at DBIS is fantastic.”

THE HELPER The Unsung Heroes, a choir of domestic workers founded by DB resident Jane Engelmann, is about to star in a much-publicised documentary. By so doing, they are helping to shine a light on the humanity and spirit of this marginalised sector of society. Beverly Au reports

ou’ll have heard about the recent Kickstarter campaign, which saw over HK$80,000 raised to enable the filming of The Helper, a documentary that celebrates Hong Kong domestic helpers and highlights the sacrifice they make in leaving their own families to help care for ours. Introducing the project, director Joanna Bowers, of Cheeky Monkey Productions, explains how she and her

producing partner, Tony Verb, have wanted to make a helper-related TV programme or movie for some time. “Erwiana Sulistyaningsih’s story hit the headlines in 2014, meaning the vulnerability of domestic helpers was something the whole of Hong Kong was finally focused on,” she says. “Then during DB’s Helper Appreciation Month in May this year, and through the Domestic Workers’ Round Table, we met plenty of kindred spirits intent on celebrating and improving the lives

of helpers. Now seems the right time to make the documentary.”

The inspiration There are currently more than 330,000 migrant domestic workers living in Hong Kong. All too often, they are overlooked and dehumanised. At worst, they are abused and mistreated. In figuring out which angle to take with the film, Joanna says she discovered that what moves people most about  October 2015

TALKING POINTS these women is the maternal sacrifice they make to come and work overseas. Having settled on this as the focus of The Helper, Joanna heard about DB’s Unsung Heroes, a choir of Filipina domestic helpers, brought together in 2014 by Jane Engelmann of DBGlee. The group, which can number 50, meets on Sundays and rehearses at Discovery Bay International School Kindergarten and in Central. You may have seen them perform at Picnic in the Park last year. One of their most popular pieces is I Wish I Could Kiss You Goodnight, a song written and composed by Jane, which imparts a poignant message to the children the women have left behind.

“When you put your children to bed, read them a story and kiss them goodnight, it’s the most tender, passionate moment,” says Jane. “I wrote I Wish I Could Kiss You Goodnight for all the women who can’t do that.” Speaking about the song, Unsung Hero Virginia Amos, a Filipina helper and DB resident, says: “The lyrics impress me a lot and they give us the freedom to speak about ourselves.” Like many of us, Joanna cried when she saw the Unsung Heroes’ I Wish I Could Kiss You Goodnight video for the first time. “I immediately recognised that this choir and their beautiful music would be the backbone of the story,” she says. “It all took shape from there.”

The documentary Filming is due to start this month, and Joanna and Jane are planning to grow the choir to around 100 singers, and to include helpers of all nationalities. The Helper will explore the varied individual stories of the choristers, two-thirds of whom are mothers. cries when she says: “It’s really hard to be away from my children but I have no choice. I want to give the best for them.” Analyn’s eldest son was just a year and seven months when she left the Philippines to seek work. One of Virginia’s recollections is just as heartrending: “The first time I returned to the Philippines on a visit, my son didn’t recognise me,” she says. “When I slept with him that night he cried, both of us cried, because he didn’t like me.”

Andalusia, in the deep-south, may be steeped in Moorish history but to me it’s the quintessential Spain. Despite creeping modernisation, significant pockets of the region’s coast remain relatively unspoilt and inland, you’ll stumble upon bucolic farming villages where time seems to have stood still.

Exploring Seville Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is the life and soul of the region. In this spirited and passionate city, the atmosphere – rather like a good flamenco performance – creeps up and taps you on the shoulder when you least expect it. Oozing history and a whole lot of charm, Seville boasts three

UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Seville Cathedral, the Alcázar and the General Archive of the Indies. These three sites form a monumental must-see complex in the heart of the city. After its completion in the early 16th century, Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (now Istanbul) as the largest cathedral in the world, a title the Byzantine church had held for nearly a thousand years. Today, it is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third largest church in the world. It’s also the burial site of Christopher Columbus. Opposite the cathedral is the Alcázar: the oldest and possibly the most beautiful royal palace still in use in Europe today. Originally built by Moorish kings in the 12th century, it’s rich in Islamic influences, and one of the best remaining examples of Mudéjar architecture. The elaborate tilework, brickwork, wood carving and ornamental metalwork is typical of Mudéjar style. Offering something entirely different,

the third UNESCO World Heritage Site in Seville, the General Archive of the Indies is an unusually serene and Italianate example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. It was built in the late 16th century to house valuable, archival documents illustrating the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines. Today the archive offers up some 9 kilometres of shelving and 43,000 volumes. Be sure to add Maria Luisa Park, Seville’s principal green area, to your list of sites to see. Its orange trees, palms, Mediterranean pines and stylised flower beds were first planted in 1911, and stretch along one bank of the Guadalquivir River. There’s 800 metres of parkland and botanic garden to explore, dotted with lakes, fountains, bowers and pavilions.

monuments and indeed entire medieval areas (including the Jewish and Moorish quarters) to explore. Rising above the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, the Alhambra is Granada’s most emblematic monument and one of the most visited in Spain. The Castle of the Alhambra was first developed as a walled town and military stronghold in the 11th century, but it enjoyed its heyday in the 13th century, when it grew into a palace, citadel and fortress, home to sultans and their entourage. In 1527 Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, demolished part of the architectural complex to build the palace which bears his name. In addition to the sublimely beautiful and intricately decorated, 13th century Nasrid Palaces, the ornamental Generalife gardens are one of the Alhambra’s main attractions. Built on the Hill of the Sun and dating back to the 14th century, they offer up superb views over the city.

Awed as I was by the Alhambra, the highpoint of my trip to Grenada was Sacromonte, home to Granada’s Romani inhabitants since the 16th century. Located on Valparaíso Hill, it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Granada. Here the resident Romanis still live in whitewashed caves cut into the rock. Should you visit in the evening, I guarantee you will enjoy some of the best flamenco in all of Spain.

Doing her bit in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Dr Winnie Siu of Island Health Family Practice reveals some of the risk factors to avoid and warning signs to watch out for

reast cancer has been the most common cancer affecting women in Hong Kong since 1993. It’s the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and over 3,000 new cases are reported each year. The median age of breast cancer patients here is 54; women over 40 are most at risk.

Early detection means less physical and emotional trauma and, most importantly, the best chance of survival. Women aged 40 to 50 should ensure that they are examined by a doctor every other year, and every year after the age of 50.

On turning 30, women should start examining themselves every month. This is best done a week after menstruation, and I recommend you do it in the shower. Ensure you feel both sides of the breasts and into the armpit two or three times with three fingers. You may find it easiest to have one hand above your head and feel the breast that side with the opposite hand and vice versa.

Warning signs The most common sign of breast cancer is a hard lump in the breast or

under the armpit. Other signs include any kind of change in the breast, such as a change in size or skin colour, and nipple discharge, bleeding or retraction. Importantly, most lumps detected are benign. Fibroadenoma, a benign lump caused by excess growth of the glands and connective tissue in the breasts, is common in women under the age of 40. Lumps may also be cysts (most common in women approaching menopause), a fatty growth or infection. Likewise, while nipple discharge can be an early symptom of breast cancer (especially if the discharge is bloody), it can mean many things. Milky discharge is often associated with the end of pregnancy; green discharge is often caused by an infection. Discharge can also be the result of a benign tumour. Only 6% of women who have a lump caused by breast cancer actually experience pain. Indeed, nipple pain is often the sign of an underlying

Risk factors Most breast cancer cases occur in women over 40. Women who have children after the age of 30, who’ve never been pregnant or who’ve never breastfed are also at risk. Just 10% of all breast cancer is genetic but women with a family history of the disease will want to be especially vigilant. To reduce the risk of breast cancer, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is vital – stick to a low-fat, high-fibre diet and make sure you exercise regularly. Anything that greatly increases levels of oestrogen in the blood, for instance excessive consumption of fatty foods and extended use of birth control pills, should be avoided. Smokers, drinkers, women who are overweight or suffer from a great amount of stress are putting themselves at risk.

cuba diving in Hong Kong? You bet. The dive scene is thriving locally with the main operators, like PADI 5-star certified Splash Hong Kong and Diving Adventure, based in and around Sai Kung. Most dives, whether they’re for training or recreation, take place at the weekends, and accessibility is a big advantage, since most dive sites are located 20 to 60 minutes from Sai Kung Harbour.

What’s more, dive trips are available year round. The water temperature can drop from 30°C in summer to 15°C in winter but keen divers can get out there 12 months of the year. “Over the past few years, we have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of recreational divers,” says Stephen Au, director of Diving Adventure. The former police officer has seen many changes to the sport since opening his business in 1998: “Diving used to be catered to young professionals due to the cost and perceived risks,” he says. “Nowadays, greater coverage of our sport has led to its development as both an alternative tourist attraction and a recreational sport for youths and the elderly, with more and more mainland tourists participating in it too.”

Water quality But what of Hong Kong’s notoriously murky waters? “Most dive trips take place around Sai Kung because of its far proximity from urban areas,” Stephen explains. “With the district being designated as a country park by the previous colonial government, Sai Kung has relatively less pollution in both the sea and on land, allowing a large variety of marine life to thrive there.” Enthusiasts should note that Hong Kong’s monsoon climate significantly affects diving conditions. “You have a mixture of extreme weather, such as thunderstorms, rainstorms and typhoons, that has a strong influence

on visibility,” explains Richard Hill, operations manager of Splash Hong Kong. “But on sunny days, visibility can be extended up to 15 metres and that brings out all the marine animals.” “Pick a day where it didn’t rain the night before, or else it will be foggy under the water,” Karen Li, a secondyear medical student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, advises. “Go with someone who can navigate well because the further out you go the more clear the water will be.” Karen also recommends divers wear fullbody, long-sleeved wetsuits “because it can get cold even during the summer”.

Marine life And how much marine life can local divers expect to see? A lot by all accounts. “It would be a lie to say that Hong Kong is a better dive destination than the Maldives,” says Stephen, “yet our seas are actually brimming with life.” Explaining that it’s rare to spot large marine animals locally, he adds that he once swam with a manta ray

While Karen enjoys diving around Shelter Island (30 minutes from Sai Kung), for the abundance of coral and coral fish, Richard recommends the relatively pristine and comparatively shallow waters around Clearwater Bay. “I’ve witnessed frogfish there that are generally found in the Andaman Sea near the Indian Ocean,” he says. “There are also barracuda out near High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung, along with squid, cuttlefish, octopus and clownfish. All these little critters are out there but it’s like a Pokémon game – you have to look hard to find them.” DB dive master Jamie Coote, a design technician at Discovery College, recalls swimming with eels on a night dive near Clearwater Bay. “My dive buddy and I went into a cave,” he says, “and 5-foot-long eels started swarming around us. It was fascinating!” Sadly, the Lantau coast is one place you won’t spot lots of marine life. “The  October 2015

waters around Lantau are unsuitable for diving because it’s where the Pearl River flows out to the sea, meaning there are relatively few coral and the water is murky,” says Stephen. On the upside, the growth of Hong Kong’s diving scene has increased public awareness about local water quality. “When scuba diving becomes a regular hobby, you tend to become more environmentally aware,” says Jamie. “You get to see the beauty of the ocean, but also the ugly side [coral dying and fish getting caught in plastic bags] when we pollute it.” Local eco groups, like Plastic Free Seas, headed up by DB resident Tracey Read, are determined to make eco concerns heard, and Richard believes the government should take a more active stance. “Right now, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is limited in its capacity to do anything,” he says. “There is always more that can be done, and despite the 2013 trawling ban, you still find lots of debris and plastic bags in the sea and littering some beaches.”

UNDER SIEGE

DB has been overrun with weekend visitors of late – and they just keep on coming. Rachel Ainsley reflects on the need for crowd control and/ or state-of-the-art portaloos

o say us residents have been feeling miffed about the hoards of visitors invading our shores this summer is putting it mildly. We felt this was coming when the Auberge opened its doors in the summer of 2013, and we knew it for a fact when taxis were welcomed into DB North Plaza in October last year. And it’s so annoying, in this case at least, to be proved right.

But what of our beloved plaza and the impossibility of getting a seat, never mind a table, therein? Well let’s see. By sharing the plaza with visitors, we get the chance to show how selfless we truly are, and prove that DB really is the most altruistic community in Hong Kong. We’ve also been given an opportunity to make new friends – okay with non-DB residents but what the heck, you should try most everything once!

But let’s think positive. We all love to moan – as the inimitable Peter Sherwood wrote in this his regular column last month – and the besiegement of DB has given us ample opportunity to do so. What’s more, a trouble shared is a trouble halved, so our being overrun at the weekends has in fact brought us together as a community.

A festival theme?

Touchingly too, all this goes to prove that none of us ever leave DB – even at the weekends. We like to sit on Tai Pak Wan and hike to DB Lookout and back; we have no interest in spending time anywhere else. Looked at this way, the fact that there isn’t a seat to be had on the ferry or Sunny Bay buses Saturday through Sunday, and taxi queues are a mile long, doesn’t actually affect us.

And so to the appalling state of the public loos. Where are the positives here? Well for one thing, it means not all our weekend visitors are relieving themselves in the sea. And for another, the rock festival fans among us may be getting something out of it. As I waded through the filth in a public loo in the plaza last weekend, I was reminded of Glastonbury and

The irony is, of course, that DB is turning into just another grotty seaside town – the type of resort many DB expats ran away from. Thanks to all the underwear-clad crowds, the socalled attractions and the garbage, it’s starting to resemble my hometown in the UK, Southend-on-Sea.

my misspent youth, and that’s always a good thing. Speaking of which, I’m just back from my sister’s festival-themed wedding in the UK. Glamping was on the agenda for most guests and portaloos were a necessary feature. I can’t tell you how much these portable toilets have improved over the years. Perhaps the powers that be could be persuaded to install super-dooper portaloos all over DB to supply the (new) demand. Loo sharing on a large scale (preferably stink-free) provides such a great opportunity for chat. At said wedding, I was slipping into a cubicle as David Beckham was coming out, and we shot the breeze. “Hi, how are you?” I managed. “Great but it’s f***ing cold,” my hero replied. We had just been treated to an outdoor showing of The Man from Uncle, and the onesies provided hadn’t quite kept out the bitter July chill. But I digress. Back to DB. In the lead up to the District Council Elections, wouldn’t it be a laugh to bump into one of the candidates outside a shiny new, topof-the-range portaloo? There’d be loads to talk about.
