PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT “You are basically setting the table...there’s no real meal cooked.” Rahm Emanuel. Mayor Emanuel was talking about his first 100 days in office and his point was patience and that change takes time. While it hasn’t quite been 100 days for me, I understand the underlying message is that only so much can be accomplished in a short period. Unfortunately, we do not have the luxury of time. People with MS, their family and friends are looking for progress and looking for the Society to be there when you need us. I’ve heard this from many of you while I’ve conducted “town hall” style meetings throughout Arizona. I do believe success starts with fulfillment of our mission. The organization cannot raise funds, build community partnerships, increase volunteerism and be effective advocates unless we meet the needs of people we serve. To that end, you will start seeing a number of new programs designed to improve

Chapter President Jim Elfline

quality of life. Through a new set of programs participants will discover how to reclaim a sense of well-being and reinvent their approach to life with MS. We are putting more resources toward research that will stop MS in its tracks, restore what’s been lost and end MS forever. The Society is making a commitment to raise $250 million by the end of 2015. This is our chance to take down MS once and for all, and ensure that every promising path is followed. The table has been set. Now it is up to us to deliver on our

promise to accelerate and expand support of families living with MS here in Arizona. This is a critical moment in our history and I believe together we can change the future for everyone living with multiple sclerosis today. Jim Elfline Chapter President

SELF-HELP GROUP

SUSAN RHODES GOES BEYOND MS RESEARCH Susan Rhodes leads a women’s group that meets in Phoenix at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Susan has been leading the group for about twelve years. She got involved with leading the group when her daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis nearly twenty years ago. Susan said that she wanted to learn more about the disease and get more involved. Shortly after her daughter’s diagnosis, Susan, who holds her Master’s degree in Zoology from ASU, began lobbying for BNI to appoint an MS specialist on their team. The MS Specialist that joined hired Susan to assist in setting up and gathering a team of researchers to conduct MS research. Susan, who is now involved in molecular research for the diagnosis of infectious

diseases, enjoys leading her self-help group and has attracted many valuable guest speakers during her tenure. She said that the group originally started as a mother-daughter group but that it has now evolved into a women’s group.

JOINTHECONVERSATION More information for this group and all of the groups in Arizona can be found on our website at www.arizonams.org under the “Programs and Services” tab on the left side of the page. 6

When asked for her advice for someone interested in joining an NMSS self-help group, Susan said, “Try several different groups, and get on the phone and talk to the leader of the group. All of the leaders are caring.” Susan went on to say, “Talk to other group members, and get a feel for what goes on in the group.” If you are interested in attending this self-help group, they meet on the last Saturday of the month at 10:00 am at St. Joseph’s hospital.
