Many passages in the bible reveal the role that God designed for a woman. These passages reveal many virtues of a woman committed to building a godly legacy for her family.

Proverbs 31:10

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

ne day, as JR Marriott, owner of Tantrum Handbags was searching for her keys through the mound inside her handbag she noticed other women were also fumbling for a particular item, wondering ‘where is it?” After being frustrated with her bottomless pit, she asked herself, ‘Why can’t a handbag be functional and beautiful?’ and thus she set out to fill a void in the handbag market. For JR Marriott, the hurdles of life were more challenging than most, as she was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, and had to overcome extreme obstacles to get through school. Thanks to her parent’s motivation and determination of not letting, her give up easily Marriott learned the attributes of tenacity. Utilizing the skills Marriott gained as a young child, she was determined to change the way women view their handbag, and wanted to instill a sense of control and freedom in their lives, one handbag at a time—Tantrum handbags were created. “I love fashion, I’ve always been drawn to it, and working with Ralph Lauren and other fashion focused companies was an incredible experience for me," Marriott says. “I dreamed of working in fashion since I was young, so the experience was a fantasy come true.”

Camp Soaring Eagle

N

Makes memories for children with serious illnesses

orthern Arizona is most known for its beautiful scenery, great weather and outdoor adventures. However, what most people do not know is that nestled between the red rocks and the pine trees-is Camp Soaring Eagle, home to thousands of terminally ill children and their families yearround. “There are currently 241,067 children in Arizona living with special health care needs,” Executive Director of Development at Camp Soaring Eagle, Paula BocaBommarito says. “Our retreats provide a safe place for them to interact with other kids, create friendships and make memories. We intend to provide a free medicallysafe camping experience for as many of these seriously ill children as possible.” Unlike other youth-based camps in Arizona, Camp Soaring Eagle is able to provide exceptional on-site medical care so kids can experience the fun of camp under the watchful eye of a cadre of volunteer nurses and physicians. “Our hope is to provide families the opportunity to get away from the everyday pressures, including the hospital, medical treatments, and financial worries and connect with other families who may be experiencing similar struggles,” Executive Director of Camp Operations, Juan Morales says. For each session, medical professionals volunteer to provide the highest-level care for campers, free. Through their partnerships,

Camp Soaring Eagle staff and volunteers are able to ensure campers have a safe experience during their stay. The organization offers six different types of camping programs including illness specific camping weekends, sibling camper weekends, illness specific family retreats, summer travel programs, veteran’s children camper weekends, and camp outreach. Illness groups served include: • • • • • • • • •

Blood disorders Cancers Down syndrome Inflammatory bowel disease Metabolic syndrome Mitochondrial disease Neuromuscular impairments Respiratory diseases Type 1 diabetes

To participate in the various programs, campers ages 6-15 must be referred from their pediatrician. Depending on the session, campers and their families typically stay anywhere from 2-5 days. “It is a magical time where we can bring some normalcy to the kids’ lives and be able to let them experience things that, in some cases, none of these kids will ever be able to experience,” Morales says. “It gives them an opportunity 16

to be away from the clinics and the hospitals and everything —and just be kids.” Camp Soaring Eagle hopes to serve 1600 campers and family members this year. “This place is about freedom and hope,” Morales says. “To see those smiles and children having a wonderful time means everything.”

Military Hero Presented with Mortgage-Free Home Sergeant Sigifredo (“Ziggy”) Buenrrostro with his wife Evelyn and their five beautiful daughters were presented with a mortgage-free home. Sgt. Code Red: Summer Heat Relief Urgent Public Plea to Help Homeless In an effort to prevent heat-related deaths and illness, Phoenix Rescue Mission is once again mobilizing its Code Red: Summer Heat Relief Campaign from May 1 through Aug. 31. D

ana Vela, president of Sunrise Preschools, knew she wanted to work with children before she turned 16, and went to work at her first preschool. Her passion for helping children and families has kept her working in the preschool industry for 30 years. Vela received her associate degree in Early Childhood Education and her undergraduate degree in Business. Her educational background, and decades of experience with thousands of children and families, has moved her up the ranks in the preschool industry. Vela has helped train numerous teachers and staff at Sunrise Preschools, to create harmony in classrooms with children who are at different levels emotionally, physically and culturally. Problem-solving and organizing comes natural for her. “I am dedicated to continuing education for our preschool teachers and staff by facilitating Sunrise University in-house training, which is a nationally accredited curriculum. I am respectful of cultural differences based on the location of each preschool. It is important that the child’s teacher is competent. This helps advance the preschooler and appeases parents’ concerns while they are away from their little one,” Vela says. She continues to help parents in the community through the implementation of the Interview Care Program at Sunrise Preschools. This allows moms to receive up to four hours of free supervision for their children so they may attend job interviews. Vela also helped develop a child care program at the Diamondbacks stadium for the players’ children. They participate in fun, learning activities in the locker room while their dads are playing baseball and their mom’s enjoy the games.

Outside of work, Vela volunteers time on the Child Welfare Differential Response Team at Child Protective Services to help improve the experience children have when they are removed from their homes. She provides training for child placement workers, so the transition of a maltreated child will be safe.

In 2004, Vela had a pacemaker implanted after she was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, a relatively uncommon disorder in which the heart rhythms are too fast, too slow, punctuated by long pauses — or an alternating combination of all of these rhythm problems.

For the past six years, Vela has been a council member for First Things First, a program funded by a voter-enacted tax on tobacco products. This regional partnership is committed to helping Arizona children, ages five and younger receive quality education, health care and family support, so they can arrive at school healthy and ready to succeed. Arizona’s youngest children benefit directly from 90 percent of the funds, with extra consideration given for children living in poverty.

Vela turned this setback into something good by soliciting Sunrise Preschool staff members and their families to join her in raising funds for The American Heart Association. “I just completed my ninth heart walk in Phoenix. I had 350 staff members and their family’s sign up to do the walk.

“I have been on the Arizona Board of Advisors child care licensing for 15 years helping set the standard for day care facilities in Arizona. I am always making incremental improvements to do what’s best for children and families,” Vela says.

eorge W. Kukurin, DC, sometimes feels as if he is living in a sci-fi movie. “Sometimes the treatments for tough neurological disorders are so simple,” the Valley chiropractic neurologist says. Are You Putting Your Hearing at Risk?

T

hough it is difficult for many people to imagine living in a world in which their hearing has been compromised, hearing loss is a significant medical issue that affects millions of people. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, among adults ages 65 and older in the U.S., 12.3 percent of men and nearly 14 percent of women are affected by tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing in the ears that can be intermittent or continuous and can vary in loudness. Many assume hearing loss is a natural side effect of aging, and while the relationship between age and hearing loss is strong that does not mean steps cannot be taken to protect hearing and maintain it well into the golden years. Workplace exposure. Overexposure to noise while on the job is a leading cause of severe hearing loss, yet millions of people encounter hazardous levels of noise during a typical workday. Professionals who are routinely exposed to workplace noise can wear protectors that cover their ears or earplugs that reduce the impact of noise on their ears.

Medication side effects. Some cancer drugs and certain antibiotics can cause hearing loss, including loss that may be permanent. In addition, when used regularly, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and acetaminophen can increase a person's risk of hearing loss. Some side effects related to hearing loss may disappear when a person stops taking the medication that is contributing to those side effects, but that is not always the case, so it is best to discuss any potential side effects of medications with your physician before taking anything. Recreational activities. Hearing loss is sometimes caused by exposure to loud and sudden noises. When attending celebrations that include fireworks, stay as far away from the fireworks as possible and wear earplugs, if necessary. When visiting a shooting range or going on a hunting trip, protect your ears with headphones or earplugs. The sudden pop of a gun or rifle can cause irreparable ear damage.

Overuse of ear buds could be putting you at greater risk of hearing loss.

Personal music players. Though it is hard to predict how many of today’s young people will suffer hearing loss down the road, it is fair to assume hearing loss figures will be on the rise. That is thanks in large part to increased usage of personal music players and smartphones and their accompanying ear buds and headphones that allow music fans to crank up their favorite tunes at all hours of the day regardless of location. The louder and longer a person listens to music through headphones or ear buds, the greater that person's risk of hearing loss may be. Those who want to protect their hearing for the long haul should limit their use of headphones and ear buds, and be sure to keep the volume down when they are using such devices.


Preventing UTIs

Some women have frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs), which doctors may characterize as chronic. When UTIs occur repeatedly, they can be a cause of stress and embarrassment. Recurrent UTIs are defined as having at least two infections in six months or three infections in one year. Eighty percent of women who have had multiple UTIs will have recurrent episodes. UTIs occur when bacteria on the outside of the genitals from the digestive system, enters the urinary system through the urethra. Sometimes, the body can remove the bacteria on its own. In other instances, the bacteria are too strong and a full-blown infection in the bladder or kidneys may occur. At this point, antibiotics might be necessary to rid the bacteria from the system. Symptoms include burning/itching while urinating, the feeling of having to urinate frequently, pain in the abdomen/lower back and urine that is cloudy or dark and may contain blood. Most UTIs are caused by E. coli, a type of bacteria found in fecal matter. Improper hygiene procedures when using the bathroom may put a person at risk of UTI. Some bacteria can remain on the lining of the bladder safely within a protective barrier that they create, possibly making a normal course of antibiotics ineffective at treating the stowaway bacteria. Other research has indicated that women who are "nonsecretors" of certain blood group antigens may be more prone to recurrent urinary tract infections. This is because the cells lining the urethra and vagina may allow bacteria to attach more easily. If UTIs are chronic, a urologist may want to conduct a series of tests and a pelvic exam to help determine the cause. Chronic occurrences are not normal. Women can take steps that reduce the number of bacteria present in the body. •Drinking plenty of water to flush out the bladder and the urethra of potentially harmful bacteria. • Boosting the immune system through healthy eating. • Drinking cranberry juice, shown to improve urinary health. • Urinating before and after sexual intercourse to reduce misplaced bacteria. • Always wiping from front to back after using the bathroom. • Urinating when the need arises – not holding it in. • Avoiding the use of fragrant feminine sprays, wipes and cleansers, which can upset the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina. azhealthandliving.com |May 2014

Breaking Bad Bedtime Behavior

A

s much as parents may anticipate their children’s bedtime as a point in the day when they can finally enjoy some peace and quiet, there are those moms and dads who dread bedtime. Parents may face a host of issues at bedtime each night, but each requires patience and perseverance so bad behaviors can be broken.

Wired Children. What parent has not experienced a child who is too excited to go to bed? Experts say that, depending on their age, children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep every night. Most children should be in bed by 8 p.m. to get the sleep their bodies need. If you miss the window of time to get them in bed, you may enter the overtired and wired period. A consistent bedtime and wake time can help set the pace for happy children who are sleepy when they should be. Their bodies will adjust to the schedule, and over time, they will involuntarily become tired when the time is right.

Overstimulation. Children have many more toys and

recreational activities at their disposal than their parents and grandparents did when they were children. The presence of these devices, including video game consoles and personal tablet computers, may not make for an ideal sleep environment. Sleep therapists advise that television watching and activities that engage the mind a good deal should be ceased prior to bed and replaced with activities that are more relaxing. This can include listening to soothing music or reading a few pages of a favorite story. Avoid activities that will increase energy levels, such as exercise or roughhousing, before bed.

The Bed Hog. There are plenty of parents who embrace 28

the concept of the family bed. However, those who want their beds to be their private domain may be put off and disturbed by small feet kicking them in the night. However, when faced with a midnight temper tantrum, many parents relent and let their child climb into their bed. This can cause a pattern of behavior that is difficult to break. Sleep training involves getting toddlers or older children accustomed to sleeping in their own beds again. It may begin by a parent "camping out" in the child's room to provide security. Over a period of days, the parent gradually moves closer to the door and then out of the room entirely once the child can comfortably sleep solo in his or her room. Initially, the process may be uncomfortable for children and parents alike. However, eventually it may solidify good sleeping habits.

Inconsistency. A routine lets children know when it is time to go to sleep. Lacking a consistent schedule may not provide the physical cues that it is time to go to bed. Adhere to a routine each night so children become trained to go to bed at a particular time. This routine may include brushing teeth, picking out pajamas and then snuggling together for a few minutes. Children are creatures of habit, and knowing what to expect will help set them up for sleeping success.

Safety Issues. Some parents cannot get a good night's sleep because they worry about their children rising in the middle of the night and wandering the house unattended or even leaving the home. Childproofing the home can calm those concerns. Placing a secure gate at the doorway of the child's room can limit roaming, while alarms placed on doors and windows can alert parents if a child is trying to open a window or exit the home.


Gynecologist or Family Doctor? By MS

A woman who feels more comfortable with one specific doctor may see him or her for a variety of health concerns, provided that doctor offers certain services. However, there are instances when specialists best answer certain health care questions. The following information can help women determine which doctor to see when certain situations arise.

Annual physicals. Gynecologists and family doctors can conduct physical examinations. Both can order blood lab tests and urinalysis to check cholesterol levels and for any vitamin deficiencies. Heart rate, blood pressure, weight and height are other screenings that can be handled at either office.

Bacterial and yeast infections or urinary tract infections. A general practitioner or gynecologist can

address these infections. However, some women feel more comfortable discussing genital issues with their gynecologists. A gynecologist may be more experienced at identifying problems and ordering appropriate follow-up exams. A family doctor may not require an examination, unless you request it, and may treat broad symptoms.

Mood disorders. If changes in mood seem to stem from

hormones or the result of a pregnancy, a gynecologist or obstetrician may have treatment options available that can alleviate specific triggers. Many women initially turn to a family doctor if they are experiencing depression or changes in mood or behavior. Both a family doctor and a gynecologist may refer a patient to a mental health specialist if the situation seems to warrant more action.

Infertility. It is best to visit a gynecologist or obstetrician to talk about any infertility issues. They are more knowledgeable of the female reproductive system and the latest therapies and studies pertaining to fertility. Cancer screening. PAP tests and breast exams can be

Enjoy a Successful Women’s Night Out

omen are busier today than ever before. The demands of work and the responsibilities of family life can dominate a woman's time, making it increasingly difficult to find time to kick back and relax. As their careers take off and families grow, many women find it challenging to make time for social interactions, particularly with their female friends. However, women’s night out is a great way to relieve stress and maintain social contacts. Making time to hang out with friends can be good for the body and mind.

Give plenty of notice When planning women’s night out, give several weeks worth of notice so more people can carve out time to attend. Begin plans for a get-together a month or more in advance, asking friends which dates work and which will not. Treat a night out with friends just as you would any important obligation.

Try something new It may be tempting to lean on old habits and make women’s night out the run-of-the-mill dinner and drinks. Instead, think unconventionally and find ways to make time spent with friends more engaging. How about signing up for a cooking class where you can socialize and learn a few new culinary secrets? Otherwise, do something out of character. Attend a poetry reading or visit an art museum.

Downplay the role of alcohol Alcoholic beverages are often at the center of social occasions. Women are largely social drinkers, but alcohol does not need to be a part of the festivities. Overconsumption of alcohol has been linked to the development of breast cancer and may cause damage to the heart and liver. Look for ways to spend time together that do not involve alcohol.

Hire a sitter A night out with the women is a chance to enjoy some adult time with friends. Having kids in tow can make it difficult for women to relax. Rather than worrying about what the children are up to at home or if your spouse is going to call, hire a trusted sitter to stay with the children. This way everyone can relax and know the kids are in good care.

Keep activities private Women who move between different social circles may have some friends that overlap. Rather than risking hurting a friend's feelings, try not to advertise social plans with everyone. This could mean restricting postings on social networking sites. Flagrant check-ins or streaming photos from your night out could seem disrespectful of others and may lead others to feel left out. A night out with the women is an ideal way to unwind and enjoy a respite from packed daily schedules. Following a few suggestions can make these social opportunities even more enjoyable.

Results from one of the best studies published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, is certainly encouraging. As Glenn Smith of Mayo Clinic and her colleagues report, cognitively normal older adults who trained their brain were able to improve their auditory information processing speed by about 58 percent (versus 7 percent in controls) through systematic training. Several studies have already demonstrated that exercise and socialization in later life have positive effects on cognition. Even the simple act of practicing juggling for a week increases gray matter in the brain areas involved in visual and motor activity. What, then, is the rationale for using braintraining programs? Perhaps, a little personal financial investment is just what someone needs to find the right motivation to train his or her brain in a systematic manner. Q. What treatments are available for fibromyalgia?

A. The conventional treatment of fibromyalgia is emphasizing on treating symptoms by using different medications and physical therapy, such as a stretching exercise combined with hot/cold therapy for pain. Alternative treatment, such as acupuncture, may be effective for fibromyalgia pain management. Research from the Mayo Clinic has shown acupuncture significantly improved symptoms of this complicated condition.

According to the principle of oriental medicine, the fibromyalgia syndrome is viewed as a disease condition belonging to the category of Bi syndrome. This is also known as obstructive pain syndrome. If certain energy pathways (meridians) in the body are affected due to invasion of the pathogenic factors such as heat, wind and cold, the flow of vital energy also known as Qi (chi) is blocked or disrupted, which weaken the body’s immune and selfdefense function. The blockage of Qi leads to the chronic pain symptoms of the muscles, tendons and the joints. Acupuncture helps to relieve pain of fibromyalgia syndrome. Correctable vision issues are often misdiagnosed as learning disabilities, ADHD or dyslexia. As many as 40 percent of all children with learning disabilities have vision problems and are misdiagnosed. Only a complete eye exam, done by an optometrist, can truly diagnose a vision-related learning issue. Glasses are helpful for some vision problems, but vision is more than seeing 20/20. Learning to read involves accurate eye movements, focusing and binocularity. As a result, learning is difficult if any of these systems are not functioning at an optimum level. Vision-related learning problems are often unidentified right away, and the person who is suffering from them might not even know. Signs and symptoms can include: *Skipping or re-reading of lines *Using a finger while reading *Closing or covering an eye *Seeing double-vision *Avoiding close-up work. This list is not comprehensive, and children have the best chance to succeed when their families seek proper eye care with an eye professional.

Q. What is viscosupplementation therapy?

A. The procedure, called viscosupplementation, injects a preparation of hyaluronic acid into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial (joint) fluid. It acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads. However, people with osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis) have a lower than normal concentration of hyaluronic acid in their joints. Viscosupplementation may be a therapeutic option for individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee. Long-term effects: • Over the course of the injections, you may notice that you have less irritating symptoms on a daily basis. A. This past week, Wildlife World Zoo,

Aquarium & Safari Park received county approval to begin preliminary construction on its next major expansion that will be focused on "The Americas." The design and permitting to develop about a 15-acre parcel on the zoo's current southern border just east of State Route 303 took over a year. Actual site preparation and construction has already begun with an anticipated opening for late fall, 2015. The Americas will feature species found throughout North, Central and South America including bears, mountain lion, primates, reptiles, jaguars, wolves and much more. The exhibits will also have four new ride attractions and additional dining options for guests. In the meantime, Wildlife World continues its 30th anniversary celebration with the unveiling of three additional species at its recently launched 15-acre Safari Park expansion. The new species include olive baboons, jackals and the Southwest's only white African lion. With the largest collection of wild animals in the state of Arizona, springtime always brings new animals the old-fashioned way. This spring has been no exception with a variety of births including monkeys, antelopes, aquatic birds and a pair of endangered jaguars, the third largest feline species in the world after tigers and African lions.

Our scheduling suggestion is to staff at least 2-4 caregivers on your schedule, depending on the length of the shifts and the frequency of the visits. That way, if your caregiver falls ill or needs to take time off, there is another caregiver that would work in his/her place that you already know. We know that no matter how much information our nurses collect at the assessment, they cannot describe how you want the caregiver to make the bed, assist you with a shower, prepare your meals, and even feed your pet. Steps to Avoid Using Fertility Drugs

A

ccording to the World Health Organization, roughly one in six couples will struggle with infertility and about 70 percent of them will turn to fertility drugs or in vitro fertilization. However, it does not have to be that way. Infertility can increase stress and unfortunately, often times leads couples to opt prematurely for fertility drugs or IVF. In many cases, fertility can be improved and pregnancy can be achieved naturally by following some simple steps.

Pinpoint your fertile window As you might already know, in order for conception to take place, you must ovulate and at least one vital sperm needs to fertilize the egg within 12-24 hours of the egg being released from the ovary. Because sperm can only live for 5-6 days in the female reproductive tract and only a small number of sperm will even survive the long journey, it is recommended that couples plan to be intimate several times in the days leading up to ovulation as well as on the day of ovulation. To do this optimally requires that you have a good idea of when you will ovulate each cycle. Ovulation Predictor Kits are a popular method for predicting ovulation. OPKs detect the presence of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. Approximately 12-36 hours before ovulation occurs, the amount of LH in your body "surges". By testing with OPKs, you can identify this LH surge, which allows you to know that ovulation is just around the corner and that you are in your fertile window.

Restore your hormonal balance Many couples struggling to achieve pregnancy can conceive naturally by following some simple guidelines before resorting to fertility medications.

Tips for Women Juggling Family & Career Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today's mothers can raise a happy family and still have a successful career.

I

he days when single income households were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career. Many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. Here are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier.

Share the responsibilities. While the days of the

single-income household may be outdated, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children, and make it to all of their children's sporting events or other school-related events. However, those responsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they are giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle such responsibilities equally so each parent knows when they have some wiggle room. For example, if your husband routinely cooks on Tuesdays, then you know you will not need to rush home Tuesday night and you might be able to stay at the office a little later to work on a project or catch up on work. Such sharing and scheduling can considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career.

Exercise daily. Juggling a family and a career is often

stressful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. However, the American Psychological Association notes the positive impact of exercise as a means to alleviating stress, citing studies that have shown that physically active people have lower rates of anxiety and depression than those 46

who are sedentary. It is easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard.

Stay involved with your child's school. Many mothers find staying active with their children's school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. Take advantage of work-from-home policies. If

your company allows you to work from home, even if only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on child care, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month.

Plan ahead. Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals to cut down on preparation time when it is your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it is ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home.

iet and exercise go hand in hand, but diets are often associated with women while exercise regimens tend to be geared toward men. However, exercise is just as important for women as it is for men, which is why women must find the right balance between diet and exercise to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Feel the burn of strength training Cardiovascular exercise is important, but women need more iron in their weight-loss regimens, specifically the type of iron found on the weight bench. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, roughly 21 percent of women strength train two or more times a week. Skipping strength-training exercises eliminates one of the fastest ways to see measurable weight loss. Two sessions per week of strength-training exercises can reduce overall body fat by around 3 percent in as little as 10 weeks. Such exercises can trim inches off your hips and waist, even if you are not cutting calories from your diet. Muscle also helps burn calories even when you are not working out. A study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that women who completed an hour-long workout that included strength training burned an extra 100 calories in the 24 hours following a workout than they did in the 24 hours after a workout that did not include strength training. This post-workout calorie burn is commonly referred to as "after burn," and it increases exponentially when women lift more weight for less repetitions instead of lifting lighter weight for more repetitions.

It may be easy to find a problem area on your body and target that area with certain exercises (think crunches for belly fat). However, it is better to work an array of muscles in an exercise session rather than focusing on one particular area. The following exercises can help women build lean muscle and stimulate the after burn of a good workout.


Pushups Pushups are the bane to many a woman's existence. However, pushups and stationary pushups, called "plank" exercises, fire up core muscles in the back and stomach. They also promote shoulder and arm strength, eliminating the need for bicep curls and other arm exercises. If pushups are difficult for you, start out on your knees and work up to doing pushups on your toes. As you build strength, you will find it easier to do pushups and notice your arms have added muscle and tone.

Lunges and squats Lunges and squats target some of the largest muscles in your body, which are found in the legs and backside gluteus muscles. Lunges will also work the adductors and abductors of your inner and outer thighs. Not only do these exercises promote strength training in major muscle groups, they require balance provided by engaging core muscles in the abdomen. Your heart rate will increase when these larger muscles are being used at the same time, which means you are getting a cardiovascular workout at the same time as you strength train.

Rowing Instead of spending 30 minutes on the elliptical machine at the gym, use a rowing machine. In addition to the cardiovascular benefits that rowing provides, you will be working the muscles of the arms, back, shoulders, legs and abdomen while you row. Rowing machines work more of the body than more traditional cardiovascular machines. Ways to Treat Hyperpigmentation

lthough it is one of the most common skin conditions, hyperpigmentation can be difficult to treat and often leads to a negative impact on a person’s psychological well-being. Characterized by a darkening of the skin due to an increase in melanin (the natural substance that gives skin its color or pigment), hyperpigmentation is commonly treated with topical treatments with varying degrees of success. While hydroquinone has been the gold standard of treatment for hyperpigmentation for decades, some people would rather use a more naturalbased product to try to lighten skin affected by dark patches. New topical ingredients including some that are plant-based are offering more treatment alternatives. The mainstay of treatment for hyperpigmentation is yearround sun protection – using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to maximize the benefit of any skin-lightening product. Some of the newer ingredients being used in topical treatments include the following:

Soy • Derived from the soybean plant, it is one of the most commonly used skin lightening ingredients in moisturizers. • Available in combination products and cosmeceuticals. • Works by inhibiting the transfer of melanosomes (small packages of melanin) into the top layer of the skin, which causes skin darkening. • Studies have shown its effectiveness as a skin-lightening ingredient in cosmeceuticals and its ability to suppress additional pigment from coming to the surface of the skin.

Niacinimide • A form of vitamin B-3 that acts like soy by inhibiting the transfer of melanosomes into the skin’s upper layer. • Used in many cosmeceuticals for its skin lightening effects and its potential to prevent additional pigment from coming to the surface of the skin.

Ellagic Acid • Natural substance derived from strawberries, cherries and pomegranates. • Works as an antioxidant and inhibits an enzyme needed for melanin production. • Studies show it is more effective at skin lightening than kojic acid or arbutin.

Lignin Peroxidase • Enzyme that comes from a fungus and can break down melanin in the skin. • Lignin is found in wood pulp and when it breaks down, it can lighten the wood pulp. This is how wood pulp is whitened for use in paper and how lignin was discovered as a skin-lightening agent. • Currently available in an over-the-counter product. • While studies have not been completed, it does have skin lightening properties. pose little or no allergy risk, so they might be more tolerable to consumers who are allergic to other natural lightening agents The following three ingredients have also shown promise as skin lighteners, but they can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Arbutin • A natural derivative of hydroquinone derived from plants, including bearberry, blueberry and cranberry. • Usually available in combination with other skin lightening agents in over-the-counter cosmeceuticals. • Some cosmetic products available contain 3 percent concentrations, which studies show can significantly lighten the skin.

Kojic Acid • An antioxidant derived from a fungus rather than a plant. Works by breaking down melanin in the skin and preventing its production in the skin. • Found in cosmeceuticals in 1 percent - 4 percent concentrations combined either with other skin lightening agents or by itself. • Clinical studies show improvement in skin lightening.

Licorice • There is a number of different licorice extracts derived from licorice root. • Available over-the-counter and has been shown to lighten skin. Those who would like to use a topical treatment to lighten their skin should consult a board-certified dermatologist who can help separate fact from fiction in terms of product claims. Be cautious about ordering skin-lightening products via the Internet, as the country of origin for the active ingredients might be unknown – raising questions as to the purity or effectiveness of these ingredients, as well as the product’s overall quality.

hat becomes of the women who graduate with MBAs from Harvard Business School? Do they go on to fulfilling careers, or drop out of the workforce, when they become moms?

The number that has been floated for years, and is quoted by Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg in her book Lean In, is that 15 years after graduation, only a third of them are working full time – and they are working for their male classmates. That statement suggests that, even when they hold advanced degrees from an Ivy League university, women are less ambitious, less willing, and less committed than their male fellow graduates. Harvard Business School recently surveyed more than 6,400 male and female alumni and found that well more than half the women aged 31 to 47 were working full time. Sixteen percent were working part time, and 10 percent were caring for children full time. Ninety-five percent of the men were working full time. This tells us that women are making difficult choices. Certainly, to do what it takes to get into Harvard and complete an MBA, they are ambitious. However, women, especially those who want to become mothers, face extra challenges in trying to strike a work-life balance. It is still a male-dominated business world that lacks understanding of the needs of working Moms. No matter where a person – male or female – earns a master’s in business administration, there is a lot they will not learn in business school. Here is an MBA for successfully having it all. 56

business owners do not enjoy managing people. They may have gone into a particular industry because it is their passion. ife as a single mother is not easy. In addition to the challenge of raising a child without another parent in the household, single mothers face many of the same challenges faced by married parents only they must do so on just one income. Stress is a reality for many single parents, and much of that stress can be traced to the financial burdens of single parenthood. Single parents often find themselves looking for ways to save money, and the following are a handful of ways to do just that.

Resist the urge to overextend your budget.

Many expenses, such as groceries and housing, are necessities. However, single parents know there is also tremendous pressure to spend money on things that have nothing to do with need. For example, come the holiday season, single parents may feel pressured to buy youngsters everything on their holiday wish list. It is easy to succumb to such pressure out of guilt, or in an attempt to make sure children do not feel cheated when they receive less gifts than their friends do. However, if succumbing to such pressure will stretch your budget, this might have grave consequences down the road. The same approach can be taken when making big-ticket purchases. If a new car will bust the budget, then shop for a preowned model, ideally one that is dealer certified and still covered under its original warranty.

Explain your financial situation to your kids.

Keeping children in the dark about your finances may lead to trouble or create undue stress. For instance, if children are not aware that money is tight, then they may struggle to understand why they cannot have the latest must-have sneakers or fill up the grocery cart on trips to the store. However, single mothers who explain the idea of a budget and define that budget for their children will likely find their children are willing to cooperate and make good partners with regard to staying within the budget.

Pay bills on time. Allowing bills to go unpaid or

routinely paying them late is only adding stress to a situation that, for many single mothers, is already stressful enough. Interest payments and penalties for paying late can quickly add up and turn a significant but manageable bill into an albatross that can loom over your finances for months if not years. If your credit card bills have already spiraled out of control, consult the credit card company to see if you can work out a payment plan in which interest will stop

accruing so long as you continue to make agreed-upon monthly payments. Companies may be willing to work with you, and such a payment plan is less likely to have a negative impact on your long-term credit, something that cannot be said for declaring bankruptcy.

Straight Talk on Huntington's Disease

P

eople may have heard about Huntington's disease, also known as Huntington's chorea, but may not know anything about the condition. Huntington's is a severe neurological disorder that affects people primarily in later life. Many people do not realize they have the disease until middle age, at which point they may have passed it on to their children. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease causes a progressive breakdown (degeneration) of nerve cells in the brain. At the peak of the disease, it can result in compromised movement, affect cognitive abilities and may lead to psychiatric disorders.

Prevalence The Family Caregiver Alliance estimates that 30,000 people in the U.S. have Huntington's disease. In addition, 200,000 people are at risk of inheriting the disease. Huntington's disease does not discriminate and affects both men and women of all ethnic groups.

Symptoms Huntington's disease usually starts showing symptoms later in life, between the ages of 35 and 50. There may be no obvious

signs of neurological degenerations beforehand, and individuals often do not realize they are sick unless they have a parent who also has Huntington's disease. The HDSA Center of Excellence at Hennepin County Medical Center says that early symptoms of Huntington's disease may affect cognitive ability or mobility and may arise as depression, mood swings, speech impairment, clumsiness and lack of coordination. The symptoms may vary, even among people of the same family. The Mayo Clinic lists many of the common symptoms of Huntington's disease: • Involuntary, sustained contracture of muscles (dystonia) • Muscle rigidity • Slow, uncoordinated fine movements • Slow or abnormal eye movements • Impaired gait, posture and balance • Lack of flexibility, or the tendency to be stuck on a thought, behavior or action (perseveration) • Lack of impulse control that can result in outbursts, acting without thinking and sexual promiscuity • Problems with spatial perception that can result in falls, clumsiness or accidents


• Lack of awareness of personal behaviors and abilities • Difficulty focusing on a task for long periods • Difficulty with the physical production of speech • Difficulty swallowing • Feelings of sadness or unhappiness • Loss of interest in normal activities • Social withdrawal • Insomnia or excessive sleeping • Frequent thoughts of suicide

Diagnosis Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder. Children with a parent who has Huntington's have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the genes. In 1993, the gene that causes Huntington's disease was discovered. Testing can now predetermine if a person is at risk and can be the catalyst for counseling and support if a doctors determine a person has the disease.

Treatment and Prognosis Huntington's disease usually progresses over a 10- to 25year period. There is no cure for the disease, and medications can only alleviate certain symptoms, but not slow down the cognitive decline. These medications are mainly to control the chorea as well as the mood swings that are key characteristics of the disease. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says that chorea is an abnormal involuntary movement disorder, one of a group of neurological disorders called dyskinesias, which are caused by overactivity of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the areas of the brain that control movement. It is a primary feature in Huntington's. Huntington's slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. He or she will need to rely solely on the help of another for care over time. Those with the disease have shorter life expectancies. Children who exhibit symptoms rarely make it to adulthood. Adults with Huntington's disease usually pass on following complications from choking, infection or heart failure. he aging process has a way of making people riskaverse. As women age, some may feel exercise is simply too risky. Hormonal changes brought on by aging decrease a woman's bone density, and that fact makes many women over 50 hesitant to embrace exercise. However, exercise plays a key role in helping women over 50 secure their long-term health and reduces their risk of injury.

Promotes independence Some women feel that exercising after 50 increases their risk of injury, which can make them overly dependent on their loved ones. However, exercise, in particular strength training, slows bone deterioration, helping bones stay stronger longer and reducing a woman's risk of suffering a potentially debilitating injury. Independence is especially important to seniors, many of whom spent years planning their retirements and waiting the day when they would be free to travel at their leisure. Daily exercise can help women maintain that independence by reducing their risk of injury and other ailments that can be confining.

Can improve sleep Some women who are fighting fatigue may feel that routine exercise will only make them more tired. However, exercise actually improves energy levels and makes it easier to get a better night's rest. Numerous studies have shown that routine exercise can improve sleep quality and even increase energy levels throughout the day, something that should raise an eyebrow among women who do not exercise but routinely find themselves fighting fatigue. A more quality night's rest improves vitality, making it easier for women to exercise and make it through the day without feeling fatigued.

Benefits those with limited mobility Women over 50 with limited mobility may feel that exercise serves no purpose because of their disability or physical condition. However, even women confined to wheelchairs, those forced to walk with a cane, or walker can benefit from 62

cardiovascular exercise and even light strength training. Such exercises can improve a woman's range of motion while reducing her risk of heart disease.

It is never too late to start Many aging women feel their time to embrace exercise has long since passed. However, it is never too late to start exercising. Women should take a conservative approach when exercising after a long hiatus, beginning with a slow walk around the neighborhood or a local park. Walking is a great beginner's exercise, as it provides a good cardiovascular workout while working a variety of muscle groups. As your body adjusts to physical activity, gradually increase the intensity of your exercise sessions, adding some strength training, ideally under the supervision of a professional. Always stretch immediately after each exercise session, and give your body ample time to recover, especially when you begin your new regimen.
