This is an introduction A world leading, once a year collection of events that explore un-average ideas about sound and music; INSTAL features unrepeatable, unmissable gigs and performances, in-depth discussions, readings, films, installations… This is what we want to do In our current anti-intellectual climate, we want INSTAL to be different: intelligent without being academic, popular without being populist. INSTAL will present and examine (with you) challenging and radical music. It will make claims for musical concepts and for their actual use. This is our main claim Music is about more than just music. In fact, music is never just about music: it is always the product of its wider situation.1 Some musics reinforce the status quo.2 Other musics3 propose ideas that can develop radical, progressive, alternative ways of thinking, feeling and acting outside of dominant ideologies; music that knows it is part of our wider situation and has something to say about that.

This is what it might feel like Instal is a collection of potential experiences; thrilling performances, dry humour, extremes of volume/silence, immersive environments, sexual intrigue, permutations of kicks ‘vs’ contemplation and emotion ‘vs’ intellect… The only specialist knowledge required is the knowledge that no specialist knowledge is required. Practically, this is what to expect 3 days of events. Happening in and around the Tramway. Local, national and international musicians, artists and thinkers. Some of the most intriguing young artists in the world alongside some of the most influential of the last 50 years. This is what other people say about us ‘(Arika’s) festival of experimental music, art and film is something of a national treasure, not only for the way it offers experiences you won't find anywhere else, but also for the manner in which it presents them.’ ★★★★

Because so for e.g.: music is always produced via multiple different and interacting social, philosophical and ideological factors. Loads of different kinds of music (including many strains of experimental music) simply fortify false notions of freedom, possessive individualism and arts as lifestyle choice. 3 In some idealised record shop of our fantasies, you might come across these musics while browsing sub-sections of the shelves marked: Experimental, Un-Popular music, Conceptual Music, Anti-Music; Sound Poetry, Noise, Music as Social Space, Improvisation, Avant-Garde, DIY, Uncreativity, Underground Music, Radio Art, Performance Sound Art… 1
