MEET THE SPEAKERS Robert Anderson, Firestone Building Products

Robert Anderson is the Metal Product Manager for Firestone Building Products. Firestone entered the architectural metal market in 2005 upon the acquisition of Copper Sales, Inc. Anderson became the company’s first Metal Product Manager in April 2006. In this position, he is responsible for strategic planning, product development, training, and sales & marketing support. Anderson has a B.S. in Finance from Northern Illinois University. He is a member of ASTM and the Metal Construction Association, where he currently serves as the Statistics Committee Chairman.

Phillip Anzalone, Director, Avery Digital Fabrication,

LaboratoryColumbia GSAPP Phillip Anzalone is the Director of the Building Science and Technology Sequence and the Director of the Avery Digital Fabrication Laboratory at the Graduate School of Architecture (GSAPP), Columbia University. As Director, Anzalone leads research and curriculum related to applied and experimental building science and technology, digitally based design, fabrication and assembly techniques, as well as numerous creative constructed projects at the School. Recent work includes chairing international Think Tanks on the future of the building industry as part of the Columbia Building Intelligence Project and organizing the International Digital Fabrication Workshops to design and construct innovative full-scale projects in collaboration with allied Universities globally. Anzalone is a Registered Architect with experience as a curtain wall consultant for R. A. Heintges & Associates, as an architectural designer with Greg Lynn Form, and is currently a founding partner, along with Stephanie Bayard, of the firm Atelier Architecture 64 (AA64).

Brad Bell, Co-Director, Digital Fabrication Alliance

Brad is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Arlington where he researches and teaches on the integration of digital fabrication technologies into the architectural design process. He has lectured, taught, and written on the uses of such technologies for the past 10 years and has been an invited critic at schools of architecture throughout the United States. Brad is a founder and co-director of TEXFAB *Digital Fabrication Alliance, a regional platform for the dissemination of issues related to computational fabrication. And as principal of brad bell studio, he has completed projects in Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. His practice focuses on adapting contextual and regional construction methodologies with new digital fabrication techniques.

Reese Campbell, Partner, Method Design

Reese Campbell is the co-founder and partner of Method Design Architecture and Urbanism, an international integrated design studio that focuses on the notion of performance and provocation to challenge spatial, material and social dynamics in projects across all ranges of scale and complexity. Method Design is located in New York City, with project offices in Copenhagen, Denmark and Athens, Greece. Reese Campbell’s background was fostered through a mix of practices including internationally recognized architectural firms such as SHoP Architects, in addition to intensive experiences in the field as builder and in the classroom as an academic. He graduated from Arizona State University in 2004.

Anna Dyson, Director, CASE

Anna Dyson is the Director of the Center of Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE), an entity spanning several institutional collaborators, and co-hosted by Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The mission of CASE is to create an exceptional context for the innovation of high performing next generation building technologies, by uniting multiple (typically disparate) interests across the building disciplines, both industrial and academic, in order to support common interests for innovation. Dyson

is currently directing interdisciplinary research funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation to develop building systems that integrate applications of emerging technology from diverse research fields.

Sara Hart, Writer, Editor

Sara Hart is a New York-based freelance writer and editor. Previously, she was senior editor at Architectural Record, reporting on design, building technology, and innovation. She’s the author of several architectural monographs. Sara received a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and is on the board of Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Historic Preservation Alumni Association.

Julie

V. Iovine, Executive Editor, The Architect’s Newspaper Julie V. Iovine is an architecture and design reporter, editor, and critic with an international reputation based on more than a decade as a features reporter and editor at The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine. She started her relationship with The Architect’s Newspaper in 2004 as architecture critic, becoming executive editor in 2007. She is a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and the author of several books on architecture and design, including Guggenheim: New York/Bilbao (Princeton Architectural Press), Michael Graves (Chronicle), Modern Americana (Rizzoli) and Ingo Mauer (Cooper-Hewitt/Assouline). Michael P. Johnson, Michael P. Johnson Design Studio

Michael P. Johnson is a professor of architecture at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and lectures throughout the United States and abroad. He leads his own firm located in Cave Creek, Arizona, which focuses on modern design for residential and commercial clients. His award-winning work has been published in design and consumer magazines across the globe. Noted Latin American architectural critic, Louise Noelle, professor of architectural history at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, is currently writing a monograph of Michael’s life work.

Jonathan Mallie, Principal, SHoP

Jonathan Mallie is one of six Principals at SHoP, and serves as the Managing Director of SHoP Construction, established in 2007. Mr. Mallie received a Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Florida (1996), and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University (1999) where he graduated with Honors for Excellence in Design. Through his years at SHoP, Mr. Mallie has engaged in the usage of emerging technologies as a means to facilitate communication and information sharing with fabricators and builders, thus promoting a hands-on approach towards the design and construction process. Together with his partners, Mallie has developed integrated design and construction platforms that have instituted transparent working environments and enabled seamless exchanges of information to take place amongst project stakeholders. Jonathan has also taught at multiple universities including the University of Florida’s Graduate School of Architecture’s Global Lab, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation, Miami University of Ohio, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a registered architect in the State of New York.

William

Menking, Editor-in-Chief, The Architect’s Newspaper William Menking is an architectural historian, writer, critic, and curator of architecture and urbanism. He is professor of architecture, urbanism, and city planning at Pratt Institute and has lectured and taught at schools in the United States and Europe. He has been published in numerous architectural


publications, anthologies, and museum catalogues. He has curated and organized international exhibitions on the visionary British architects Archigram, the Italian radical architects Superstudio, and contemporary English design, and he served as Commissioner of the U.S. pavilion at the 2008 Venice Biennale. He has participated in various juries including the 2006 and 2008 New York City AIA New Practices, 2007 and 2008 San Francisco AIA Honor Awards, and the 2007 Lumen awards for lighting.

Dirk J. Meyer, U.S. General Services Administration

Dirk J. Meyer, AIA, serves as the National, Technical Advisor, Building Enclosures for the U.S. General Services Administration, Public Building Service where he provides technical support to each of GSA’s 11 regions. Meyer is licensed as an architect in nine states, is a certified general contractor, and has over 25 years of professional experience. Currently, a board member of the Building Enclosure Technology and Environmental Council (BETEC) he has also served as Program Manager for the $220 Million Modernization of US Department of the Interior headquarter building, and as a technical expert for the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division. Prior to his federal service he was Vice President of an Architectural /Engineering firm where he provided design, consulting and forensic services.

Federico Negro, Partner, CASE Design Inc.

Federico Negro is a founding partner of CASE, a virtual design and construction (VDC) and integrated-practice consultancy based in New York City. At CASE, Federico is primarily responsible for leading efforts focused on the latter stages of the building design, fabrication and construction processes and preparation for long-term life cycle management. His focus is in the development of technology strategies that can more efficiently manage processes throughout these phases. Significant projects include: Building Information Modeling Historical Study and Strategy Development, with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; New York University’s 30 Year Master Plan Initiative with Ennead Architects in New York; and The Louisiana State Museum and Sports Hall of Fame with VCC, USA and Trahan Architects in Louisiana.

Mic Patterson, Advanced Technology Studio, Enclos

Mic Patterson is a designer, researcher, educator, and entrepreneur whose work focuses on the building skin. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology and structural glass facades. Most recently, Patterson participated in the establishment of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) where he works as the Director of Strategic Development. Enclos is a leading national specialty facade contractor, and ATS is its dedicated facade think-tank with the mission of anticipating and realizing the future of the building skin. Patterson has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures.

Edward Peck, Midwest US Building Skin Practice, Thornton

Tomasetti Edward M Peck, AIA, LEED, joined Thornton Tomasetti to lead the Building Skin Practice in the Chicago office. Formally Edward was a director of a foremost ETFE design fabricator. Edward has been involved in some of the most complex and award winning ETFE projects around the world including the “WaterCube” that housed the swimming events for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Patrik Schumacher, Director, Zaha Hadid Architects

Patrik Schumacher is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects and founding director at the AA Design Research Lab. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988. Patrik Schumacher studied philosophy and architecture in Bonn, London and Stuttgart, where he received his Diploma in architecture in 1990. In 1999 he completed his PHD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University. Patrik Schumacher has been teaching at various architectural schools in Britain, Continental Europe and the USA since 1992. In 1996 he founded the “Design Research Laboratory” with Brett Steele, at the Architectural

Association School of Architecture in London, and continues to serve as one of its co-directors.

Dennis Shelden, Gehry Technologies

Dennis R. Shelden is Associate Professor of the Practice of Architecture Design at MIT, and a Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Gehry Technologies, a building industry technology company formed in 2001 by the research and development team of Frank Gehry Partners. He joined Gehry Partners in 1997 and became director of the firm’s computation efforts in 2000, where he was responsible for the management and strategic direction of the firm’s technology efforts. Prior to joining Gehry Partners, he performed structural engineering, energy systems and technology development work at firms including Ove Arup & Partners, Consultants’ Computation Bureau and Cyra Systems. Professor Shelden lectures and conducts research in building industry process advancement and in design computation and cognition. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design, a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a Ph. D. in Computation and Architectural Design from MIT.

Ann Smith, Cambridge Architectural

Ann Smith is the champion and face of sustainable construction for Cambridge. She travels the United States giving presentations and working in conjunction with architects and consultants in the conceptual stages of projects seeking LEED certification. Ann provides architects, engineers, contractors and building owners with all of the necessary information and best practices to simultaneously bring their ambitious design concepts and green building initiatives to life. Ann is a Continuing Education Instructor for the American Institute of Architects and an active member of the International Parking Institute. She is also a Fellow of the Leadership Delaware Institute.

Erik Verboon, Technical Designer/Facade Consultant, Buro

Happold Erik Verboon is a technical designer and facade consultant for international consulting and engineering firm Buro Happold. Since 2007, he has been a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Product Architecture Lab. He is also currently an adjunct faculty of architecture at Pratt Institute, serving as facade consultant to a third-year undergraduate comprehensive design studio.

Andrew Vrana, Co-Director, Digital Fabrication Alliance

Andrew Vrana is a Principal Architect with Houston-based Metalab, a practice integrating expertise in digital media and fabrication with architecture, product development, and civic artworks, from concepts through construction. Recent projects include collaborations with Dennis Oppenheim, Jaume Plensa, and Matthew Geller. The firm recently completed civic art commissions incorporating remote micro-sensing and custom algorithmic display of real-time building performance. As a member of the faculty at the University of Houston College of Architecture, Andrew has co-taught the Digital Fabrication seminar since 2005 with Joe Meppelink that has realized numerous award-winning and published works including the New Harmony Grotto with Ben Nicholson and Ceiling Cloud, the 2009 AAFAB award winner, with Scott Marble. Andrew is a Co-Director and Co-Founder of TEX-FAB *Digital Fabrication Alliance, a regional platform for the dissemination of issues related to computational fabrication..

Bill Zahner, President and CEO, Zahner

L. William Zahner, President and CEO of Zahner, is recognized as expert on the use of metals in artwork and architecture. The American Institute of Architects bestowed upon him an honorary AIA membership in 2007 for his dedication to the profession of Architecture, his knowledge of metal building envelopes, and his contributions to advancing the quality of the built environment. Bill Zahner is the author of two books and numerous articles that are the comprehensive guides, and official textbooks on the use of metals in architecture. Zahner was also awarded the International Copper Medal by the Societa Metallurgica Italiana Spa located in Florence, Italy, in March 2006.
