Writers And so you’re all hyped up with the latest doomsday movie, 2012. You left the cinema bawling or at the very least, redeyed and jaded. Sure, sure. I am not a fan of endings [whether happily-ever-after ones or the hara kiri-ish endBring it On: Fight to the Finish ing.] and I’m sure, so are you. But then, [okay you know By Aleli Santos what’s next, 1.. 2.. 3..] isn’t it that when a door closes another opens? [Cliché buzzkill.] This is what Arbiter’s 2nd ish is all about. Endings. Or would-be endings. And beginnings. *** For this ish: ‘Blockbuster Hit’, you’ll be bombarded with a lot of slick flicks your ABAM family went through during the sem that was. Look forward to all the familiar movie titles, if you can count them all, WELL DONE. You are officially a popcorn-lover. These movies proved parallel to the ABAM life we’re living. Like these movies, we all agree that last semester was a blockbuster hit, and this semester promises to be one for the top of the charts. The Fast and the Furious Adrenaline rush. That’s what you get every time. You enjoyed the session week tambay. You, as a transitional, worked extra hard to meet all the HRD requirements for your application process. And, even the clock went crazy! 5 months went on like an overnight camp. 5 months of feasib, cases, marketing contests, presentations and stock trading [insert: cried over MERALCO shares!]. End result: you were furious. Or not. Haha. Bring it On! You frequently have that look: steady gaze, pouted lips, eyebrows raised and occasional grin. THE GAME FACE.

Yes, last sem you were ready to battle all the time. You’ve shown department pride and love during the magical team-building session. You defended your beliefs and ethics during the Yabang Pinoy Magyabangan Tayo Debate. And who will forget the furious battle for the crown during Yabang Pinoy’s Ultimate Pinoy Quiz Bee? [Oh yes, METAMORPHOSIS even morphed its Filipino translation, remember PAGDADALAGA? So much for Hallmark greetings!]. Most importantly, ABAM became part of the Hall of Fame for Orgpres! 4peat, baby! Really, ABAM’s in it to win it! Step-up II: The Streets. It’s not where you’re from, it’s where you at. Class-ey! ABAM even conquered the streets last YP Todo Patintero. You took time to take part during Comm Aff’s Maaga ang Pasko and Jail Visit. All these events proved that ABAM life is holistic; you get to experience development inside the org, as well as form external relations. Slumdog Millionaire Millionaires. Yup, that’s what ABAMers became after the various competitions they aced. They empowered the Filipino voters during the Major Marketing Event. They were able to understand teen insights through Coke’s Open-Up. They lived the Filipino dream loud and proud during the PANAF Marketing Competition. They even went the extra M.I.L.E through Nestle’s leadership program. Kudos! ABAM is so proud of you! And what about the milestones you achieved throughout the sem? You were part of

the best members list. You were part of the all-star line -up for your department events. You were awarded as the “best TRANS”. Pat on the back! Cheers! Like this breakthrough movie of the year, you deserve a trophy. Twilight Woot. So you think I’ll miss this? What about the new found love you connected with? You found your Edward Cullen or Bella Swan. You may also have found your own Volturi. You imprinted on that certain someone and made an impression. You were laughed at and taunted by ABAM werewolves. Silly, ain’t talking about whatever that’s in your head. I’m talking about a FAMILIAL LOVE here within the four walls of the tambayan. By blood, we’re all in this together. [Okay, pilit na. Sige na nga. What about your new love teams? Wink, wink.] *** You may come up with more movies. The list may go on and on. And this semester, with so many goodbyes pending and SENIORS/TERMINALS leaving, you might as well PUT BACK THAT GAME FACE ON and look forward to all the events lined-up for you. Step-up to the challenge, be your own leader. Create your own blockbuster hit. FIGHT TO THE FINISH. P.S. Congratulations to our new Editors-in-Chief: Kata Garcia and Clauds Tayona! May the force be with you. :D Officially signing off, Aleli.

ABAM Skills workshop: Learning in action Carol Muyano

Last July 24, a skills workshop “Learning the Basics of Photoshop” was held at UP College of Business Administration. The said workshop brought by Human Resources and Development (HRD) Department was part of series events of Member Development (MemDev’t). The event aims to develop members’ skills and increase their knowledge in Photoshop which is useful in making publicity materials for advertising and improving powerpoint presentation. Started at 5:30 in the afternoon, ABAMERS underwent into hands-on activity with special guest Alfredo Natal, Jr., former Executive Vice President for Internals, who showed and taught the basics in photo editing. That is, turning a dull photo into an eye-catchy one. Amazed and surprised members in scenario, as Kuya Jr. demonstrates fascinating and captivating effects packaged in Photoshop. Though others had technical problems in installing the software, the event went on with people having fun transforming the photo, applying different effects and producing an extra-ordinary one. As the event ended, Kuya Jr. showed some of its fantastic works he made for his marketing subjects during his undergrad years. Before everyone left, Diane Reyes, Vice President for HRD gave thanked to all the people who came and revealed a surprise announcement. That is, organizing a sequel of the event due to its successful upshot. The skills workshop was handled by Carolyn Muyano, event Director.

October 19, 2009. - Planning for the induction, my associates, Alvin, Jesse, Sheila, Treisha, and me wanted it to be memorable for the new members and ABAM as a whole. Difficulties in planning didn’t hinder us from making the event happen. It turned out to be okay, it was a good way to bond with the ABAM family, old and new members, and everyone was happy. The newly-inducted members prepared several K-pop inspired numbers. They even had a Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls prezo afterwards, and wrapped up with a showcase of their acting prowess. Former HRD Vice-President Adz Garcia also graced the event and became one of the panelists for “Korean Idols”. CJ de los Santos received the “Best Transitional” award and Mina Balico was “Best Member” awardee. In the end, it was a successful event and a very fun night. 31 August 2009 – A lively crowd of female inmates welcomed us in the Kamp Karingal Quezon City Female Dormitory (QCFD) as we paid them a visit to share some of our blessings and show our genuine care concern.

Beyond Bars: A Jail Visit Activity Issa Roldan and

It was an afternoon filled with outstanding performances, heart warming stories and pure enjoyment. ABAMers set forth to this event engaged with the idea of them providing joy and happiness for the inmates; yet surprisingly, it was us that had been totally entertained and awed. The inmates have prepared lots of production numbers for ABAM including ballroom dance routines, 2 song numbers and of course, performances from the ever energetic QCFD dancers, showcasing their talents through various modern tunes with ‘Boom Boom Pow’ as one of their beats. Of course, ABAM answered these with talents of its own with Alyssa Lamorena’s ‘The Greatest Love of All’, Oscar King’s Fame, and a ‘Nobody’ dance number led by CJ Delos Reyes. The inmates have problems as regards to the supply of their basic necessities such as toiletries and laundry soaps; and so ABAM has graciously given away gift packages to 2 different dormitories and individual loot bags for each of the inmates. These, as we know, would not compare to the life lessons we have learned from the inmates as we talked and related with them during the merienda and interaction portion of the program. This has been a good experience for ABAMers because it is in these activities that we realize that there is indeed hope and optimism even beyond bars. Kudos to Beyond Bars directors: Abi Poliquit, Nelsie Macabuhay and Lala Maranan.

Last August 15, 2009 the Special Events Department made its mark and allowed its presence to be felt as it launched its very first event for the academic year 20092010. Following the success of Marksman: Target Experience which elaborated on the principles of sponsorship and events management a year ago, the department came up with Marksman2: X-Marks the Spot. This time around, a broader range of topics, which included leadership and time and stress management in addition to the two topics mentioned earlier, were included so as to cater to the needs of its audience even more. The speakers were a mix of former UP ABAM alumni (Timothy Humangit for leadership & Weng de Leon for sponsorship marketing), to current member (Raena Panganiban for Events Management), down to a professional (Mr. Jeff Menguin for time and stress management). Here are two of the key points I got from the said event. We UP students are perennially

stressed people. According to Mr. Menguin, the reason why we stress so much is because we stress about things which we practically don’t have control over. For instance, we stress about a failed exam, but if we are to coin it in accounting terms, it is already a “sunk cost” and there’s practically nothing we can do about it. Another thing is poor planning. As an example, for instance, we say we want to achieve this and that in say, ten years time. However, if we do a little reality check on the short run of the things that we are doing at present time, very little or none of the things that we do right now contribute or direct us in achieving our long term goals. In other words, we are directing our energies to the wrong places more often than not.

Another note-worthy area of the said event was former UP ABAM president Timothy Humangit’s talk about leadership. As a recipient of a leadership award during his graduation and being the epitome of a nearly perfect leader, the man certainly knows what he is talking about. In a short span of time, he enlightened the audience with some tricks in effectively managing people. Of his words, what seems to strike the most is his claim that a good leader is one who knows his people well enough. That is, a good leader must recognize the diversity of the people and personalities he is handling. He/she must recognize the wide variety of ways in motivating his people. At the same time, he/she must recognize under what circumstance his/her people work best. For instance, if your subordi-

nate is a perfect crammer, it might be wise to schedule his/her “deadlines” a couple of days before. Marksman has indeed been an essential walk-through for both the transitionals and members alike. Even more, it has been a good learning experience for us four project directors of the event who all happened to be newbies in the Special Events Department. Lots of unexpected things happened in the pre-planning and preparation stage of this event. Nonetheless, I’m proud to say despite all the hustles and bustles along the way, Marksman lived up to its objectives and was able to deliver. Not bad for our first time.

Victory tastes sweeter the fourth time around, especially when we thought we wouldn't make it at all. Together with last year's partnersincrime JFA and

newcomers AdCore, we showed the entire DAR gym and everyone inside why ABAM is the undisputed king of Orgpres, sweeping the team awards for the night. Even with two back-to-back acad hell weeks immediately before and only one night's worth of proper practice, our trademark blend of relentless music, dance, and comedy left the judges speechless. We even took home an unprecedented attendance award! San ka

pa?!

But even more valuable than all that, we were all reminded about why we love Orgpres so much (and so it loves us back..haha). It drives us to live up to our name as a family, spending hours preparing props, laughing over our silliest ideas, and working towards a single goal we all want for each other. And it represents the love and passion we all feel for our family. It truly brings out the best in us. And that's why I can honestly say that one of my proudest moments ever as an ABAMer was when a prof asked me in class the day after Orgpres last year, "Ba't ka paos?" and all I could say was, "Orgpres kasi." The ball's in your court now, juniors and sophies and Clauds. Make us proud! And spend more than one night practicing! XD "Ang musika ay nasa puso lamang… May Voltes pa..pa..pa…payb." - Benson Buera

TV SERIES REVIEW I never would’ve been introduced to this show if it wasn’t for my geek kid brother. You see, The Big Bang Theory revolves around geek guys like him. Basically the storyline of this comedic show focuses on this group of four science nerds that is composed of Howard, Raj, Leonard and Sheldon. Howard is an Engineer while the latter three are Physicists. Their brilliant minds allow them to understand the scientific explanations of how the entire universe works. However, albeit possessing great intelligence, they don’t know much about one important thing, i.e. interacting with other people, especially women. They are content with each other’s company, playing sci-fi board, video and role- playing games, eating take-out food from 7 different restaurants week in and week out, spending Wednesday nights at the Comic Book stores, etc. All that begins to change when a free- spirited hottie, named Penny, moves in next door. Here is a closer look at the characters:

Accenture – from "Accent on the future". The name Accenture was proposed by a company employee in Norway as part of an internal name finding process (BrandStorming). Before January 1, 2001, the company was called Andersen Consulting. Adidas – from the name of the founder Adolf (Adi) Dassler. BMW – Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Factories). Coca-Cola – derived from the coca leaves and kola nuts used as flavoring. Daewoo – company founder Kim Woo Chong called it Daewoo which means "Great House" or "Great Universe" in Korean. Epson – Epson Seiko Corporation, the Japanese printer and peripheral manufacturer, was named from "Son of Electronic Printer" FCUK – French Connection United Kingdom.

Kodak – Both the Kodak camera and the name were the invention of founder George Eastman. The letter "K" was a favorite with Eastman; he felt it a strong and incisive letter. He tried out various combinations of words starting and ending with "K". He saw three advantages in the name. It had the merits of a trademark word, would not be mispronounced and the name did not resemble anything in the art. There is a misconception that the name was chosen because of its similarity to the sound produced by the shutter of the camera. Lego – combination of the Danish "leg godt", which means to "play well". Lego also means "I put together" in Latin, but Lego Group claims this is only a coincidence and the etymology of the word is entirely Danish. Years before the little plastic brick was invented, Lego manufactured wooden toys. Microsoft – coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to microcomputer software. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' disappeared on 3/2/1987 with the introduction of a new corporate identity and logo. The "slash between the 'o' and 's' [in the Microsoft logo] emphasizes the "soft" part of the name and conveys motion and speed.

Google – an originally accidental misspelling of the word googol and settled upon because google.com was unregistered. Googol was proposed to reflect the company's mission to organize the imNero – Nero Burning ROM named after Nero burning mense amount of information available online. Rome ("Rom" is the German spelling of "Rome"). Häagen-Dazs – Name was invented in 1961 by icecream makers Reuben and Rose Mattus of the Bronx "to convey an aura of the old-world traditions and craftsmanship". The name has no meaning. IKEA – a composite of the first letters in the Swedish founder Ingvar Kamprad's name in addition to the first letters of the names of the property and the village in which he grew

Oracle – Larry Ellison, Ed Oates and Bob Miner were working on a consulting project for the CIA. The code name for the project was Oracle. The project was designed to use the newly written SQL database language from IBM. The project was eventually terminated but they decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world. Later they changed the name of the company, Relational Software Inc., to the name of the product.

Pixar – from pixel and the co-founder's name, Alvy Ray Smith. According to the biography "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs" by Alan Deutschman, the 'el' in pixel was changed to 'ar' because 'ar' is frequently used in Spanish verbs, implying the name means "To Pix".

Zuse – pioneering German computer company named after its founder, Konrad Zuse (1910–1995). He built his first computer in his parents' living room at the end of the 1930s. Zuse was taken over by Siemens AG. The name is now supposedly echoed by SuSE (Software und System-Entwicklung: "Software and system development").. Now, here are some interesting (and random, I must say) facts about certain brands that you may not know Qantas – from its original name, Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Servi yet. Here it goes. ces.

Reebok – alternate spelling of rhebok (Pelea capreolus), an African antelope.

Toshiba – named from the merger of consumer goods company Tokyo Denki (Tokyo Electric Co) and electrical firm Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Shibaura Engineering Works). Unilever – name created to reflect the merger of Margarine Unie and Lever Brothers, agreed in 1929. Lever Brothers was named after its founders, William Hesketh Lever and his brother, James. Volvo – from the Latin word volvo, which means "I roll". It was originally a name for a ball bearing being developed by SKF. Wendy's – Wendy was the nickname of founder Dave Thomas' daughter Melinda. Yakult – Official claims state that the name is derived from jahurto, an older form of jogurto, the Esperanto word for "yogurt". However, it has also been claimed that the name is derived from the fact that the product was developed from ancient Mongolian practices of culturing yak's milk in a sack made from a yak's stomach - the combination of Yak and Culture in English giving the product name as "Yakult".

Walt Disney was afraid of mice? The three most valuable brand names on earth: Marlboro, Coca-Cola, and Budweiser, in that order? That the white-flabby-guymascot that serves as an icon of Michelin is called Bibendum ? If Barbie were life- size, she would stand seven feet, two inches tall? The Nike Logo was designed for about $35 only? Its ironic that the price of the shoes is more than cost of the logo. The Fedex logo has an image of an arrow embedded somewhere in it? Look closely.

The company's wellknown logo has a right-pointing arrow located in the negative space between the E and x. The arrow was introduced to represent speed and precision, which are part of the positioning of the company. The 4 rings in the Audi logo have nothing to do with the Olympics? They represent the union of 4 car manufacturing companies that came together to form Audi.

ABAMers Rise Up to the Challenge

“Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may also start a winning game.” Innovations and creative ideas are risks that may either lead to failure or to success. It seems the latter had been the fortune for many ABAMers this first semester as they brought pride and joy to the ABAM family after emerging victorious in various competitions they took a risk in. On September 12, all ABAMer group Team Taaah composed of Luz Baldueza, Tintin Espiritu, Oskie King, Issa Roldan and Aleli Santos competed in the Finals Round of marketing competition Electrify: Empowering the Filipino Voter through Marketing. The objective of the competition was for the competing teams to construct an Integrated Marketing Communications Campaign aimed at stimulating a chosen segment of the Filipino population to vote in the upcoming 2010 national elections. The team made it to the Finals Round, held at TechPortal, UP AyalaLandTechnoHub, after besting other teams from all over the Philippines. The nationwide competition was spearheaded by the UP Junior Marketing Association Major Marketing Event in partnership with Namfrel and Meralco. Although the group did not bag first prize, they still wowed the audience with their campaign entitled Positiboto. Even more ABAMers showcased their talents and skills in the idea generation competition Teenspeak 09: Open UP which was sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company in partnership with the UP Advertising Core. The competition was aimed at developing ideas on how to increase consumption and subsequently sales of Coke amongst the teen market segment. The Finals Round, held last October 23 at the Coca Cola Office in Pasong Tamo, Makati City, definitely exuded a competitive aura as the eight finalist teams each had their pitch to the Coke panel of judges in the hopes of bagging the fifty thousand cash prize. In the end, Team IsCoke to which ABAMers Diane Reyes and Carlo Bautista belonged to, won the much coveted P50,000 check. Meanwhile, Team Tansan composed of ABAMers Luz Baldueza, Oskie King, Erielle Pineda, Reden Principe, and Aleli Santos bagged the second prize. Other ABAMers who became finalists in the event included Claud Aragon, Tin Luna, and Cams Ruivivar. Finally, last November 7, Diane Reyes and Zel Enriquez, ABAMers who are also part of the 2009 PANA Team made the whole ABAM family even prouder by bringing home the 1st runner up title from the recently concluded PANAF IMC Competition. The Philippine Association of National Advertisers Foundation-lead competition is considered one of the most prestigious marketing competitions in the country. Our warmest Congratulations to all the winners, as well as to the whole ABAM Family! Each ABAMer’s win is a win for the organization too. We all hope that this would inspire everyone to continue taking risks, to continue joining competitions and expanding your horizons. You never know, taking this particular risk may be the start of a winning streak for you! ** Upcoming competitions include the L’Oreal Brandstorm 2009 and the HSBC YEA.#

Confessions of a Teenage Transitional Ma. Tricia Claudine C. Tayona Just as life is not a bed of roses, so is the transition process not a piece of cake. However, it is that one bite that you would regret not to take. The transitional process started my renewal; the renaissance of that innate nature that I never thought could be easily kindled. ABAM did not just start a spark, it set my life ablaze with a revitalized me. This organization, this family, made me experience one of the greatest changes in my existence. My usual life revolved around a few simple things: God, home, school and friends. I was never an active individual that I usually avoided extracurricular activities. I did love group presentations and the like but to actually devote myself to one particular non-academic (strictly speaking) endeavor was not really a part of my system. Come college, I realized that I had to make the most out of the remaining time I have in schooling. I knew then that joining an org would suffice just that. ABAM did not fail me in any way my scrupulous and analytical mind could think of and has definitely passed my highly fastidious standards. Moreover, the org’s transitional process was a brilliant step to familiarize the transitionals to an ABAMer’s life. For me, it was not like typical job training but was more of blending in with a new community; moving in to a new family. ABAM did not give me the slightest impression that I had to struggle to fit in, for there was only a diaphanous line between a transitional and a full-fledged member. The members themselves reached out and not only supported me in the process but at the same time, encouraged me to work independently and cooperatively in a group. They exposed me to different aspects of not just the org’s world or even the business world but to most if not all important elements of one’s career. It was not all work and no social life, it was not pure cold professionalism; they showed me that business encompasses not just the skyscrapers and the well-off, but even the smallest units of the community, the way one interacts with people, the money spent on any product or service and even that small presentation we do all comprise business. The trans process has developed not only people skills, but also harnessed pro-activeness, ignited passion and sharpened professional attitude. This has changed me—no…more of, had me reborn into a new person fully aware of her actions, responsibilities, and the measures and sacrifices she has to take for the betterment of her life. The transitional process was a period of enlightenment, enjoyment and enactment that was just necessary to be a bona fide ABAMer, a true businessperson, and a fulfilled individual. ABAM, I could never thank you enough. Still, I tell you that you are one of the dearest blessings I have received. Let’s continue breaking grounds pushing our limits to the farthest reach! ♥

LITERARY As with the celebrated G reek epic, our hero’s back! As for Choices and Chances, here’s the 2nd part of the story. (Don’t worry, no Trojan horses here.) Ready to know who the mystery poet is? Read between the lines!

to me in the letter as if nothing happened between us. Dear Gran,

Sa may bintana nagsimula ang lahat ng ito Mula sa pagkabata’y sadyang magulo Sa may bintana rin magtatapos ang aking kwento At dito dadanak ang patak ng dugo

LITERARY

That was when it all became clear to me. She was the only love of my life, and I know no one can ever replace her. The letter was drenched in tears as I fold it and kept it in my pocket. The next day, I asked Les to bring me to Felice’s grave. I brought her her favorite bouquet of flowers and laid it on the place where her body is peacefully kept. I uttered a short prayer and stayed a while longer after Les left. As I was about to leave, a woman wearing all black passed by me and laid flowers on the same grave where Felice is. And she looked at me. She has the same face as that of Felice. It was as if I’m being haunted by her. Then she smiled and said, “Hi, you must be Gran. I’m Grace, Felice’s twin sister.” I smiled back and from that day on, I promised that I’ll never look back for I know we both had made our choice. As I continue to look at the two birds on the tree, I felt calm and peaceful. Wherever Felice is right now, she will always be a part of me, and that whatever chance she gave me at love, I’ll let her guide me all the way... [Editor’s Note: Thanks, Enrico a.k.a. M.B.! Don’t forget ABAM, ‘kay? Welcome to the real world, we’ll miss you! ]
