This is our foundation sire, Mohssen (*Ansata ibn Halima x *Bint Mona). He was 3 years old and had just been named Grand Champion Stallion at the Gulf Coast Arabian Horse Show in Texas. The year was 1969, and this photo was taken at Gleannloch Farms just prior to his making his way to us in Utah. It was the same year and the same place where The Pyramid Society was formed.

Cariswood Arabians and The Pyramid Society share a long history with the Straight Egyptian Arabian, and we proudly join with breeders and enthusiasts around the world in honoring this great organization as they observe 50 years of dedicated service to the horses and people we’ve grown to love so dearly. Whether it’s horses or humans, here at Cariswood, it’s always been a family thing! All of the horses descend from original bloodstock we have bred or owned. Cariswood Mahrousa (above) and her daughter, Cariswood Hana (left), are two recent examples of the excellence for which we continue to strive to produce.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

THE PYRAMID SOCIETY CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS The year 2019 has been a time of celebration for The Pyramid Society. From our kick-off 50th Anniversary event in Scottsdale to our Egyptian Event at the end of August and our grand golden gala celebration, it has been an amazing year. In many ways, it is “Mission Accomplished” for the Society as we look back over the decades to our founders, whose vision of saving these precious horses led to successes beyond their wildest expectations. These founders carefully defined the Straight Egyptian, ensuring breeders preserved them as a primary source of classic Arabian type. Soon Straight Egyptians were sought, not only in North America, but around the world, inspiring generations of new breeders, including many from the ancestral homelands of these horses, from Egypt to the countries of the Arabian Gulf and beyond. The Society’s flagship activity – the Egyptian Event – has been recreated in countries around the globe, once again, validating our mission and vision. We cannot rest on the laurels of our past successes, however, if we wish to create a vibrant future. For horse owners in the Americas, times have drastically changed. Registrations for the most popular breeds have fallen dramatically in the past decade, as have memberships in breed organizations, show entries, and the numbers of young people involved. The Pyramid Society is not immune to these changes. We are, however, more fortunate than many breeds since we have a thriving international component. Yet the success reflected by so many countries now breeding Straight Egyptians, also means they are holding their own shows and events. This remains a cause for great celebration, but also means we must strengthen our North American base. The Pyramid Society has been especially blessed with dedicated members, including many key international supporters, without whom we could not have survived and thrived. Going forward, it is important to remember the lessons of our founders to stand united and honor both mission and purpose. To sustain a bright future, the Society must also remain global in relevance, emphasizing our commitment to education, research and promotion. Perhaps our greatest strength, however, is our people – dedicated, enthusiastic and passionate! Just one example are the many farms and breeders who held outreach events this year. Bravo! It is only by introducing new people to our magnificent horses will we inspire the new owners and breeders of tomorrow.

MY LIFE WITH THE ARABIAN HORSE

GAIL AHRENS, TRIBUNAL ARABIANS

At her Tribunal Arabians farm in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Gail Ahrens breeds Arabians with an emphasis on Straight Egyptians. This year, two of her homebreds claimed two of the biggest titles at this year’s Egyptian Event. Her stallion Caiiro (Alixir x Good Faith by Thee Desperado) was Gold Champion Stallion shown by resident trainer Mike Neal, and Gail’s stunning black mare Daenerys (Burak Ben-Eden EA x Good Faith) was Gold Champion Mare ATH. We asked Gail to share a bit about her life with Arabians. As she says, Caiiro and Daenerys have given her a different perspective on showing – “It’s a new joy.” Q. How were you introduced to Arabian horses, and how did you know that this horse belonged in your life?

STINE PHOTO

A. The first Arabian that joined our family was Mellanies Image (Hajahn El Ajzaa x Eurekah), a birthday gift for my daughter’s fifth birthday in 1993. You can never have just one, so we slowly developed a small herd. Our mare, SLA Promise (*Prosit x FM Monica), was carrying a foal, and a dystocia resulted in a colt that lived for 72 hours. It was a sad time, so my daughter took me to Yorklyn Arabians to cheer me up. I

This page: 2019 Egyptian Event Gold Champion Stallion CAIIRO (Alixir x Good Faith by Thee Desperado) was the 2016 Silver Champion Junior Colt, and 2018 Champion Region 16 Champion Stallion. Last Year, Gail led Caiiro to Reserve Champion Stallion ATH, and he was also Champion Liberty.

fell in love with Aleeyah Shama MC (Pimlico RCA x Infidels Mist MC), and we decided to look at breeding a bit more seriously. Nadia Belkadi of Yorklyn suggested that Good Faith (Thee Desperado x Minstrilmonalisa) would be a great horse for my daughter, Eden. Faith had injured her leg when she was young and was destined for a life without a saddle. And Eden, who had a back injury, was working through the healing process and riding wasn’t an option for her. They were made for each other. Faith only encouraged our family’s interest in Straight Egyptians, and Eden began to do more research. Good Faith was an amazing beauty. The cross produced Caiiro, one of the kindest, most beautiful stallions I have

ever had the chance to spend time with. He is an absolute gentleman. I have never had any desire to enter a showring but Caiiro loves to show. And I love Caiiro. And Caiiro was willing to take the time to train me. So sharing the experience of entering the ring with Caiiro has been incredibly special. In the meantime, Eden found another stallion, Burak Ben-Eden EA, who she thought was stunning. We decided at that time that life without a stallion would be just a bit more manageable so we didn’t pursue our interest. We were excited to learn that Burak Ben-Eden was listed in the EBC Stallion catalog in 2012. Eden thought he would be the perfect stallion to cross with Good Faith, and so followed Daenerys.

Q. In what ways have Arabians enhanced your life? A. They are the reason to move through the rest of what life throws your way.

Q. With which of your Arabian horses do you feel the closest and why?

Q. What is the Arabian’s role in your daily life today? A. Trainer Mike Neal takes care of the horses at the farm. It is fantastic to be part of the flow of the barn, but that is Mike’s flow. In the morning the farm is busy, everyone is focused, but laughter is often the background noise. It is a place to remember that life has joy. I take care of the horses at the house. The older mares live there, and it is much quieter. It is a place to remember that life has peace.

A. Who is your favorite child? You develop completely different relationships with each of your horses. All the relationships bring something of great value to your life, and you treasure that. Caiiro and Daenerys have given me a completely different perspective on showing. It is a new joy. Cannon Express (NF Proof x WS Geisha Girl), a retired Arabian racehorse, has been the riding love of my life for more years than I can remember. He is retired now, and both he and I dream of the miles we spent on the trails.

Q. What would you say to someone who is contemplating purchasing an Arabian? A. Find the horse that captures your soul. Q. Tell us how you decided to bring Caiiro back to the Egyptian Event for a run at the open Stallion title? What did the judges especially like about him? What do you love most about him? A. Mike thought Caiiro needed a bit more time to mature last year. He has always had confidence in Caiiro and, truth be told, in me. I know how much Caiiro loves attention in the ring so I wanted to show him in the Liberty Class. That was everything to me. In that class you can see his movement, his attitude, his joy and his teamwork with Mike. So Mike and I made a deal. We could bring Caiiro to the 2018 show and put him in the Liberty Class if I also showed him in the amateur class. Mike always planned on showing him in the open class in 2019. Q. Same question for Daenerys, who has already been the open Champion Mare at the Event. How did you prepare for the show? You looked relaxed and confident out there. Did you feel that way? It’s incredible that you own AND bred both of these champions. A. Daenerys is totally different in the ring. She is absolutely fine with traveling and showing, but it is not her passion. I spend more time with her in the stall at shows. She enjoys and needs the extra attention. When we trained and showed, the relationship was much more one of trust in each other. Neither Daenerys nor I are excited about the attention in the ring. She is much more bonded with Mike than me, but she and I share a special closeness in the ring. She is there because we want her there and we are working together. That is enough incentive for her to do her best. Caiiro is all about the cheers.

Q. What is the most meaningful moment or experience you have had with an Arabian horse? A. Aleeyah was near her due date with her first foal, Just Azhar. The vet was visiting to look at another horse and commented that she was walking oddly. She looked her over quickly and thought she would be a few more days. I left the house to pick up my son from school. As I drove up the driveway, Aleeyah laid down and started delivering. I sat for a while with her head in my lap. She would move about and then put her head back. It was magical to be in her bubble for the birth.

GOING FOR THE GOLD THE 2019 EGYPTIAN EVENT

AUGUST 28-31, 2019 KENTUCKY HORSE PARK, LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY USA

T

his year’s Egyptian Event was special in many ways. Most importantly, The Pyramid Society was turning fifty and there was much to celebrate. To get everyone in the mood the Show Commission did a spectacular job of decorating the arena, with lovely gold bunting in the seating area, and a stunning Egyptian backdrop replete with palms. The theme continued with gold and black throughout the concourse and there was a special area for guests to sit and reminisce, with two television screens showing historic images and videos. Then, throughout the arena were areas of homage to our founders, members, horses, activities and much more. To stroll along the concourse at this year’s Event truly was a walk down memory lane. While there were fewer entries in the competition this year, the quality was high and there were many lovely horses for all to admire. There was even a special class called “50 for 50” for handlers as old (or older) than the Society! Throughout the show there were smiles and congratulations all around the arena for the winners, with victories shared by both small breeders and long-established farms. Education is always a hallmark of the Event, and this year was no exception. Spectators gathered 24 < P Y R A M I D 2 0 1 9 - 2 0 2 0 Y E A R B O O K · W O R L D

to watch two lovely Egyptian geldings go from kindergarten to graduation in a wonderful four-day seminar by Andres Castaño and Patrick Sullivan. Joe Ferriss gave an informative lecture on the history of the Society and was joined by an illustrious panel of breeders – Judith Forbis, Janice Bush and Jody Cruz – for a thought-provoking discussion. The Silent Auction this year represented an opening of the Society’s treasure troves, with lots of wonderful memorabilia relating to the Egyptian Arabian, while the Premier auction held during Friday night’s Golden Anniversary celebration was just as historic, including a breeding to the immortal Ruminaja Ali, along with two exquisite pieces of art in honor of the Society’s long dedication to artists. There just seemed to be a special magic in Kentucky this year with so many attendees commenting on the great time they had visiting with others, making new friends, and just coming together to reminisce. The special celebration on Friday night was a grand success – beautiful ballroom, beautiful people, generous sponsors, and happy bidders. Then there was the dancing… Saturday night was also full of excitement as everyone

STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN MARES Gold Champion Straight Egyptian Mare, Most Classic Head and Egyptian Event Highest Honors Breeders’ Award, Female, HC ABLA EL SAGHIRA (Ali Reshan x Ravenwood Sensation), owned by Deborah or Lindsey Hurdle, New Caney, Texas. Deborah Hurdle’s Heritage C breeding program near Dallas, Texas, was founded in 1980 on Blunt Egyptians and early EAO lines. Before long she decided concentrate on straight Egyptians. Judging by this year’s Gold Champion Mare, HC Abla El Saghira, that was a good move. She is a gorgeous mare. “I’ve only bought three Straight Egyptian mares in my life. It was always a nationwide search, and it has been my preference to purchase from established farms. I found Saghira’s dam, Ravenwood Sensation (Ravenwood Majesty x Ravenwood Cody) at Ravenwood Ranch in Montana. They’ve probably been around for 50 years. I was interested in Sensation because she had two crosses to the *Ansata Ibn Halima son El Hadiyi (x *Sammara by *Morafic). She is so full of charisma – she snorts and blows and holds that tail straight up and flags it, and she moves like thunder. Sensation has been a phenomenal mare for us and we treasure her. She is fabulous, a once in a lifetime mare, so trustworthy, and so full of the spirit. And just a great mom – she will even adopt foals. She had a baby this year and she is so happy. “As pretty as her daughter Saghira is, she has a character to die for. She loves her people, she wants attention, and she gives it right back to you. Anything you ask she’s going to try to do. That is her nature. In the ring with Sandro Pinha, she got out there and just gave and gave for him.” Saghira has produced three foals for Deborah – a filly and a colt by Tamer al Khalidayah, and a filly this year by Ansata Royal Qasim (Ansata Qasim x Sharifa Tamria). “She’s got her momma’s sweet disposition also. We sold the first filly to Qatar, but we’re keeping this one,” says Deborah. “Next, I plan to break Saghira to ride. “People all over the world have tried to purchase her. And the answer is always ‘no.’ I do have some very high quality horses that are for sale, but Saghira is not one of them. There is no amount of money that can replace the joy that she brings to me.”

THE 50 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION GALA A NIGHT OF GOLDEN CELEBRATION

Thanks to our gracious 50th Anniversary Sponsors, Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud, this year’s gala was a true celebration. The ballroom at the Embassy Suites hotel in Lexington was artfully arranged with a variety of golden-themed seating options designed to encourage mingling. After all, there were fifty years of stories to tell, horses to remember, and favorite moments to share. Cooked-to-order food stations, including seafood and steak, meant that the participants could graze throughout the evening. To allow more time for socializing, the evening’s presentations were divided into several parts. They included a welcome by President Rogers, a presentation by our Celebration Sponsors, Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud, regarding their new book about historic breeder Abbas Pasha, which was graciously presented to the premier sponsors at this year’s Event, and the Trustees Award for Christie Metz and Henry Metz. A lively auction of three incredible offerings, including a breeding to the legendary Ruminaja Ali donated by Bergren Family Arabians, was also conducted. As a fitting conclusion to the Celebration the lights dimmed and a nostalgic film honoring the Society 50th anniversary, generously sponsored by Kuwaiti Straight Egyptian breeders, was shown for all to enjoy. DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY Thanks to a gracious sponsorship from Two Silos Farm and Patrick Sullivan, the dancing began just after the official 50th Celebration dinner ended. And what dancing it was! The band, aptly named “The Sensations” was sensational indeed. This group of talented and engaging musicians tempted dancers of all ages to show off their moves until the clock struck midnight. It was a fabulous end to a fabulous evening, and more than one guest was heard to say “best gala ever!”

TALARIA FARMS AT THE 2019 EGYPTIAN EVENT

BY CYNTHIA CULBERTSON

A CONTINUING JOURNEY OF SUCCESS Allison Mehta of Talaria Farms attended her first Egyptian Event in 1997. By 1999 she was coming not just as a spectator, but as a proud Straight Egyptian owner. And not just the owner of any Straight Egyptian, but a yearling colt named Botswana whose victory that year was just the beginning of his storied legacy at the Event. In the ensuing twenty years there have been countless Egyptian Event successes by Talaria, but 2019 was a banner year for the farm with an amazing eleven winners and ten reserves. To what does Allison attribute this astonishing success? She is quick to point out that she loves horse shows for two reasons. Firstly, she thoroughly enjoys the social aspect – seeing friends, meeting new people, even the process of setting up the Talaria stalls at the Event. Allison compares this labor of love to the magical town of Brigadoon that appears for just one day every hundred years. But in this case the “town” of Talaria arises only for the duration of the Event before disappearing to return another year. As countless Event attendees will attest, her enjoyment has

been generously shared with others during the legendary barn parties hosted by the farm. Secondly, Allison believes horse shows contribute to Talaria’s success because “it is the best way to compare my

horses to those of other breeders.” Despite being proud of the farm’s many victories over the years, Allison believes it is not as important to win as it is to see what other breeders are doing. She educated her eye over the years by observing horses from great breeding programs like Imperial, Ansata, and many others. Consequently, she attributes the ongoing success of her breeding program, alongside her late husband Curt Westley, to decades of sitting in the stands and observing. “Our horses,” she explains, “come from a long refinement of observing what other breeders do and then carefully incorporating those influences into the great core we have with Botswana.” Botswana, who reigns again as the Event’s leading sire, is credited by Allison with making it easier to be a breeder. “He makes us look even better because he is so consistent,” she says, “Like a marvelous shade of paint with which to adorn any canvas.” She also advises that it is important for any breeder to have great mentors along the way. Allison Mehta with her late husband Curt Westley, whose presence was greatly missed at this year’s Egyptian Event. process of observing, refining and adding to the Talaria program is the beautiful mare TF Neerapture, the 2019 Silver Champion Senior Mare of the Event. “I had always wanted a Shahir IASB daughter,” Allison states, “but it was challenging to find Shahir’s bloodlines here in the States.” Finally she was able to obtain a daughter of Shahir in foal to Botswana, and the result of the cross was this wonderful mare. Allison confesses that her good friend and trainer Johanna Ullstrom

has told her if she ever considers selling TF Neerapture she “will come over and beat me with a broom!” After her Silver Championship, it is likely Johanna won’t need a broom and a ticket from Belgium to the

U.S. any time soon. Allison’s highest compliment for her mare is that “she is a classically beautiful Straight Egyptian mare – you would never mistake her for anything else!” While the absence of Curt was keenly felt at this year’s show, he surely would have been so proud of Talaria’s success and the continuation of the farm’s grand tradition at the Event. “This has always been my favorite show,” says Allison, “and it is incredible to think of the great horses and people that have graced the Event over the years.” Whatever her successes, Allison is always striving to improve. “I would like to be known for not only preserving these horses, but also trying

to breed a better horse every year,” she reflects. “I am also passionate about helping others realize their vision. We have to remember that in order for the horse to survive, the people who own and love them have to survive as well. Part of Talaria’s pledge is to allow people to come and enjoy these extraordinary horses in a safe, friendly and courteous environment. We strongly believe that both the horses and the people must be treated with dignity and respect.” In reflecting upon the 50th anniversary of The Pyramid Society, Allision simply states, “The Society has the best mission in the world – preserving, perpetuating, and promoting the Egyptian Arabian!”

GUARDIANS OF A PRECIOUS TREASURE HEIRS TO A NOBLE MISSION UNITED FOR A VIBRANT FUTURE

In 1969, The Pyramid Society defined the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse and began its dedication to preserving, perpetuating and promoting these extraordinary horses. Today, more than fifty years later, Straight Egyptians are prized throughout the world. 2019 INTERNATIONAL SHOWRING STARS

Show rings around the world were filled with beautiful Straight Egyptian and Egyptian-Sired Arabian horses once again this year. While several countries now hold Egyptian Events or shows exclusively for Straight Egyptians, Egyptians also enjoyed incredible victories in the world’s most prestigious Arabian shows. Maisa Al Nasser, for example, won Gold Champion Senior Mare at the All Nations Cup in Aachen and also went on to be named Bronze World Champion Senior Mare at the Salon du Cheval in Paris. Another champion, Adham Sakr, was Gold Senior Champion Stallion at the All Nations Cup for Straight Egyptians in Kuwait, and was then named Bronze World Champion Senior Stallion in Paris. In the 2019 World Championships it is also interesting to note that every single Gold Champion featured Straight Egyptians in both their sire and dam lines!

ARABIAN HORSE WORLD L E G E N D. L I F E . L U X U R Y.

11/12 19

Al Ghanayim Stud

by Jeffrey Wintersteen Photos by Mohammad Aladwani and QCPTV-Kuwait It is well past midnight when I leave Kuwait International Airport. I can see the lights of the city briefly before turning south towards the Saudi border. Soon there is nothing but the darkness of the desert, occasionally interrupted by headlights heading the other direction. My driver Ahmad slows at a sign for Al Wafra and we turn off the main highway. It is an area populated by family farms, and it’s becoming a favored escape from city life in the winter and a place to spend some time outdoors. Soon the sand-colored walls of Al Ghanayim Stud come into view. It is my second time to visit this 11-hectare equine paradise, and I am very pleased to return. My first visit was a couple years ago, and I was not sure what to expect. Shawn Crews of Shawn Crews International wanted me to meet Ayad Al-Thuwainy. Shawn and I come from different backgrounds in horses, Shawn grew up with Straight Egyptians and I had worked for the Polish State Studs, but we share a passion for great Arabians, regardless of the strain. I first came at her request, and found in this corner of Kuwait a man whose vision for the Arabian horse needed to be shared. I am even more excited to return a few years later and see the progress of his vision, and enjoy the tranquility in the mare paddocks during an evening stroll. Here at the farm, the stallions are ridden daily, because Ayad understands the utility of these animals. As someone who grew up exercising my family’s Arabians on the track, it resonates with me. And then there are the foals: balanced, correct, beautiful, and… black. Ayad’s Al Ghanayim Stud is unique in the world, and is poised to challenge some long held preconceptions in the Arabian breed. A L G H A N AY I M S T U D > 1 < W O R L D

D

uring Ayad Al-Thuwainy’s youth, Black Beauty and The Black Stallion stories made an indelible impression on him, one he carries with him today in his love of black Arabians. “The color black is an integral element in the total vision I have for breeding Arabian horses. My goals are not complete with out it,” explains Ayad with an infectious smile. “I don’t buy into the idea that those who incorporate color into their breeding decisions are not serious breeders. Color is a trait, just like a dished face or longer neck. In addition, the color black lends itself to several key and much needed attributes of the breed, such as dark pigment, black feet and dark eyes without white. I fully understand that what I aspire to accomplish as a breeder of world class Straight Egyptians, as well as non-Egyptians of this rare color, is a lofty goal.” Ayad, having been enormously successful in his trading and construction business endeavors, is well qualified for the enormity of such a task; he has the resources and the passion. “I probably chose the most challenging type and color of horses to breed, but this is my passion: to own and breed the best black Arabians anywhere in the world. This is also where I see my niche in the industry.” The first logical step in Ayad’s goal was to assemble the best black breeding stock that he could find. He quickly realized two inherent problems: quality black Arabians are very hard to find, and when he did find them, they were not for sale. Ayad devoted hours of research on his own, and, when warranted, asked others for help. “I began my search for these types of horses, but the first challenge was finding them. Shawn Crews was able to help in this regard. I would ask Shawn ‘Where have you seen a really good quality black mare or stallion?’ She would say, ‘I know so and so’ and I would go and knock on their door,” explains Ayad laughing. “Really, this is how it happened, the best horses were not on the market. You know, it wasn’t easy!”

Ayad, however was armed with a potent weapon, his genuine charm and likeable nature. His gentle approach with these reluctant owners eventually led to prized black horses heading to Al Ghanayim. “Honestly, at first I just established a friendship and trust with them. When we eventually got to the topic of parting with their horse, it took a lot of convincing. Their first consideration was always: Where is the horse going? How they would be taken care of? And how would they be bred? This was always discussed before any other aspect like price.” Ayad adds, “I made sure these owners knew they would always be welcome to come to see how they are cared for. I understand, it was their ‘baby’ that they were willing to part with on such a basis. At the end of the day, we become fast friends and they will always be a part of them as well.”

Shawn agrees that it is Ayad’s connection with these owners and what he is trying to build that gives him an opportunity not afforded to others. “Not just anyone would be trusted with these kind of horses,” explains Shawn. “We are talking a handful of the most rarely bred Thee Desperado daughters, three of Mishaal HP’s finest and a number of Bellagio RCA’s very best offspring. Breeders like Judy Sirbasku of Arabians Ltd. don’t part with these often, and

when they do it is only for one reason; they know they will live a fantastic life and will be bred with a serious vision for the future of the breed. I sensed it in every bone in my body, that these are happy, secure, content and healthy horses. They are in perfect weight with amazing coats and the foals are as much in love with their people as they are with their mothers. Visiting my longtime horse friends, and their new foals, was a joy, it does not get better than this.”

Like his success in business, Ayad approached the acquisition of breeding stock in a thoughtful, methodical and two-stage approach; the first is drawing to a close. “Since we began there have been many advances. We are very happy where we are today, and we know where we are headed. Our vision and philosophy has not changed since the beginning,” explains Ayad. “We started with Straight Egyptians, which was a real challenge, especially if you are talking about just blacks! Today, I believe I am the biggest owner and breeder of Straight Egyptian blacks, especially of this quality and conformation.”

Today Al Ghanayim’s broodmare band boasts 14 black Straight Egyptian mares along with 10 black Straight Egyptian stallions. There are also several black fillies bred by the stud that look extremely promising as future broodmares. The second stage of Ayad’s plan was the acquisition of non-Egyptians. “This is the next step, whether stallions or mares, in order to have those pedigrees as well,” says Ayad. “There are the two schools of breeding, Straight Egyptian and non-Egyptian Arabians. I understand both schools and I like and respect both schools of thought. I am committed to both.” A stellar example of Ayad’s non-Egyptian mares is the

black Eden C daughter Erianna FMA out of Sue Bees Honey by Rohara Samurai. The latest addition to Al Ghanayim Stud’s non-Egyptian program is the black stallion Jakhal Alfabia (ZT Marwteyn x ZT Magna Psyche by ZT Magnanimus) from Alfabia Stud in Italy. Ayad did not rely on agents or consultants to find him, but came upon this striking black stallion through his own research. “I found this beautiful stallion that had not been shown and few knew about. I was doing some research, and found his video. I didn’t know his age, where he was or even who owned him at the time. It turned out he was owned by my friend Gigi Grasso,” laughs Ayad.

“Jakhal for me really means a lot,” Gigi explains, “because he comes from one of the best mares of Zichy-Thyssen, ZT Magna Psyche. She comes from the very special mare WN Obsession who is found in the pedigrees of a lot of world champions. She has really big eyes and a long neck. ZT Magna Psyche is also the dam of Balada Al Alfabia by EKS Alihandro who was Bronze World Champion Filly. Myself, I don’t breed for color, but I love Jakhal.” At the time, Jakhal Alfabia was on lease to Marieta Salas of Ses Planes Stud in Majorca, Spain. Marieta has a sterling reputation as a breeder including World Champions Abha Qatar and Abha Palma, along with Reserve World Champion Abha Qalams. Jakhal Alfabia has also been on lease to Ferdinand Huemer’s La Movida Arabians in Austria, who is the breeder of the stallion Lawrence El Gazal. This breeding resumé helps confirm Jakhal Alfabia’s quality, regardless of color, and strengthens Ayad’s decision to use him at Al Ghanayim. “For me it is about the quality of the horse first and of course, the color,” says Ayad. “What captured me about Jakhal is that I was looking for that particular stallion, a stallion that embodies a dream, a type of horse I wish to breed,” continues Ayad. “Jakhal resembled this perfect horse I had in my mind. So after studying photos and videos, I went to see him in person. I was very lucky to convince Gigi to part with him, and lucky to have him as an addition. Jakhal is young, so he will bring value for many years. We will cross him on both Egyptian and non-Egyptian horses to see how he sires, it is something we are really looking forward to.”

Jakhal Alfabia, having fulfilled his lease with Ses Planes, now resides with Giacamo Capacci Arabians in Italy. “We will start with breeding him, that is the priority, but he may be shown at some point in the future,” explains Ayad. “Actually, he must be shown, with the beauty he has, definitely. He is definitely a show horse, not just a breeding horse.” Shawn believes it is Ayad’s open mind that gives him such a decided advantage going forward. “It is fascinating to watch someone who has all these different ideas and opinions coming at them sift through the quagmire of information and in the end, with a noted confidence, come up with a vision and

direction,” explains Shawn. “The first step for Ayad was a foundation of Straight Egyptians. He chose a bloodline that was not wildly popular in his country, for the core of his Straight Egyptian program and the crosses he plans to breed. That plan is also to breed remarkable non-Egyptian Arabians, which has been done before but never to my knowledge so methodically from a base of such extraordinary Straight Egyptians. Make no mistake, Ayad weighs his choices regarding purchases and breeding decisions carefully, as if it were checkmate in a chess game, all of which makes the addition of Jakhal to the program and long term plan really exciting.”

A L G H A N A Y I M S T U D > 15 < W O R L D

Another aspect that shapes Ayad’s views on horses and breeding is the performance side. Ayad’s first experience as a youth was at the racetrack, and this form-to-function ideal has stayed with him. In addition, his daughters Ghaneema and Ghizlan train in dressage and hunter jumper, which Ayad sees as an advantage. “They have learned all the basics and correct riding to give them a good background,” explains Ayad. “They have a passion for this and hopefully they will help

me with breeding in the future. Ultimately, this is why beauty was not the only consideration. We want to enhance the breed in all aspects, not just beauty, but conformation, legs, feet, and even character. And not just color, of course, but the color along with all of these things, otherwise there is no use.” His son Ahmed has also developed a love of the horses, and wants to spend as much time as possible there.

After the search for foundation breeding stock, it is the breeding aspect of Al Ghanayim that is most important for Ayad. With two foal crops on the ground, we are starting to get a glimpse of the potential of the horses that have been assembled at Al Ghanayim. “I am very pleased about the quality of the breeding in general,” says Ayad. “The most important black foal bred by Al Ghanayim so far is a colt, and I am very proud of him, Abjar Al Ghanayim (Bellagio RCA x Kavetas Miracle RCA). He is my first really correct black colt that have I bred. When we purchased Kavetas, I had her bred to Bellagio. We continue to learn, and this year was

better than last year. I am getting a better idea of how we can improve in the future, how we can enhance the results. While both years we had a great foal crop, year two made it more special in that I got more blacks, I feel more proud when I see blacks coming.” “This second foal crop is exceptional,” confirms Shawn. “Like Ayad, I am always thinking five years ahead, and what these will produce when they are older. I just can’t wait to see how it unfolds. Now you have so many generations of excellence, whatever color it may be, the genetics of the blacks that Ayad selected are truly special.”

Quality, and of course color, is always on Ayad’s mind. This year he is averaging forty percent black foals, which is many times above the norm. “Really, it is not easy to get a black of quality, even if you have two quality black horses. My black and bay mares give me more of a chance for blacks from my experience so far.” Ayad has not limited his broodmare band to just blacks. When he sees some exceptional mares that can contribute, such as the exquisite grey mares Mishaala Belle RCA (Mishaal HP x Desperados Belle RCA) or Maram Aljazira (Al Kidir x RN Marwa by Ansata Halim Shah), he adds them to the program. Another aspect that should pay dividends in Al Ghanayim’s breeding program is their use of technology, specifically embryo transfer. “We have chosen some of our best mares to start with

this year, regardless of color,” explains Ayad. This technology is incredibly important to Ayad’s larger strategy. “I want to see the multiplier. I don’t want to wait an entire year to see what the mares will produce from each stallion. By using the multiplier of embryo transfer I can increase the production by three times,” he says. Shawn has an appreciation of Ayad’s goals, and keen understanding of how it manifests itself in the pedigrees that Ayad is trying to utilize. “All the way back to Egypt there are black ancestors in these pedigrees, not because they were chosen for color, but because black was naturally present. That said, it was rare to see black horses in Egypt because in the desert a lot of blacks didn’t survive. The heat was too difficult for them,” explains Shawn, “only the strong and well conformed ones survived.”

William Oppen

A

l Ghanayim is pleased to announce that William Oppen will be joining the management team in 2020. “Willy,” as he is known, is a graduate of veterinary medicine from National University of North East, Argentina, and the Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program at Carnegie Mellon University, Tepper School of Business in the U.S. He began his work with Arabians at Count Zichy-Thyssen’s farm in Argentina. There, he was instrumental in establishing the stud’s breeding stock and developing facilities for the first frozen semen in Argentina. In 2002, Willy joined Al Shaqab Stud in Doha, Qatar, a global leader in breeding and promotion of the Arabian breed. Beyond just veterinary and management expertise, Willy is also an international judge, most recently at the All Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany. Al Ghanayim is very pleased to have the expertise and insights of this well-rounded horseman, and is looking forward to his contributions to this innovative stud.

“Without being critical of other black programs,” continues Shawn, “what is unique about the blacks that Ayad is raising is that not only are they very beautiful, but they are exceptionally well-conformed. They have great legs, feet and strong bodies. They would be exceptional horses in any color. In addition, the black coloring is present many generations back. That’s what makes it so exciting to see these foal crops. We are seeing all the past generations come through. Moving forward, the strong genetics of this foal crop, whether you breed those fillies to Egyptian or non-Egyptian stallions, will be a magic equation for excellence.”

But it is not just disproving misconceptions about blacks in the Arabian breed that could be Al Ghanayim’s contribution. “I think that the dark pigment of Ayad’s herd not only gives him an advantage, but can contribute to the Arabian breed as a whole,” says Shawn. “An issue within our breed is loss of pigment, and in my opinion, not only is it an undesirable trait, but it can be detrimental to the horses’ health. Also today we

see a lot of white in the eyes. This is something that the Egyptian strains in particular have a problem with. Other breeders could dip into this program’s genetics by purchasing a young colt or filly. I would not be surprised to see Ayad’s breeding program become a game changer in the larger scope of things. Ultimately that is what we all hope for, being able to contribute for long term good of the breed.”

A L G H A N A Y I M S T U D > 31 < W O R L D

The sun begins to sink low over southern Kuwait, the sand colored walls of Al Ghanayim are bathed golden in the waning light. Early that morning, Shawn and I rushed to the garden stable before breakfast as the black mare, Alia Galal RCA (Alixir x Kiyasa RCA by Thee Desperado), had foaled a beautiful healthy black filly. At dinner, Ayad is anxious to hear what we think of her. “Whenever I get the news of a colt or filly being delivered, my first question is always, is it healthy? That is the most important question of all, but then I always ask what is the color? says Ayad with a joyous laugh. There is little doubt that Ayad Al-Thuwainy charts his own course in the Arabian breed. We are all eager to see where it leads.

STRAIGHT EGYPTIANS ARABIANS FROM TWO SILOS FARM PARTICIPATE AT COLLEGE AGGIE DAY In March, four beautiful mares from Two Silos Farm traveled to Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri, for “Aggie Day” to help FFA students practice their judging skills. Owner Gail Mailloux commented, “We had a wonderful day doing outreach for Straight Egyptians. The mares were enthralled by all of the activity ... stock horses, sheep, cattle, goats, and hogs. They got along so nicely in the trailer and did a super job in the ring. It’s wonderful to show a different breed to the students, and these mares were great ambassadors. Thanks to Astrid Owens for hours and hours of help to make this happen!” A group of beautiful Two Silos mares head off to college.

MORE THAN 600 PEOPLE MEET EGYPTIAN ARABIANS AT AN OPEN BARN IN WASHINGTON Tim Manring of Arabians at Egg and I, Chimacum, Washington, participated with 20 other farms in Jefferson County’s Annual Farm Tour in September. This was the first year Tim joined the tour and more than 600 people stopped by his farm to meet his Straight Egyptian Arabian horses. Tim explains, “No surprise to anyone who breeds or owns Arabian horses, my horses loved it, crowding the stall fronts and fences to meet people.” Later that week Tim hosted a smaller group of about 35 people in a more personal gathering to meet the horses and learn more about why Tim chose Straight Egyptians as the focus of his breeding program. “It was another gorgeous day and great fun.”

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP FEATURING STRAIGHT EGYPTIANS HELD AT ZAJADDI ARABIANS Duane and Diana Cantey, owners of Zajaddi Egyptian Arabians, Mount Vernon, Arkansas, hosted a photography workshop on June 29th, featuring award-winning photographer and Arkansas State University Professor of Photography and Graphic Design, Kim Vickrey Boyd-Jones. Kim was the perfect choice to instruct the workshop and brought her many years of experience photographing horses along with her exceptional portrait skills to share with the group. Fourteen photographers and five gorgeous models ranging in age from 13 to 19 gathered for a light breakfast followed by a morning of beauty beyond anyone’s imagination. It was the first time for the models and many of the photographers to meet Straight Egyptian Arabian horses. Diana gave a brief history of the Straight Egyptian and why it is considered rare, historical, and very special to the family. She further elaborated that the farm is celebrating its 20th year of breeding and that she and her husband Duane are passionate about breed promotion. “It is important for us to educate the public about this special breed and how it is the perfect family horse. Having the opportunity to work with Kim and host photographers who came from as far as Texas and Tennessee was very exciting. “After witnessing the interactions between the models and horses, it was clear that everyone was impressed with their kind, sweet personalities,” Diana commented. “The mares enjoyed the attention and affection and received lots of kisses and cuddles from everyone.” The workshop was a great way to promote the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse with emphasis on the qualities that make it special – beautiful peoplefriendly horses with kind, sweet-natured temperaments.

PYRAMID SOCIETY REPRESENTED IN CHINA

WORLD HORSE CULTURE FORUM

At the kind invitation of the China Horse Industry Association, Executive Director Cynthia Culbertson traveled to Hohhot, China, to speak at the 2019 World Horse Culture Forum held November 28-December 1. Located in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the area is famed for its vast grasslands and deserts as well as being home one of the most renowned horse cultures in history. Representatives from 30 countries attended the Forum which included three broad topics, “The Spirit Epitomized by the Mongolian Horse,” “Modern Science and Horse Culture,” and “The Diversity of Equine Culture,” with multiple lecturers on more specific topics within each category.

China is second only to the U.S. in number of horses, and Hohhot within Inner Mongolia is an important region for the horse industry in China. The region hopes to further embrace its strong historical heritage with enhanced horse-related tourism, sport, and equine art and culture. “It was exciting to meet so many people from China and around the world and introduce them to the Egyptian Arabian,” relates Cynthia. “I am very grateful to Mr. Ran Xu, of Dynasty Arabians, for arranging my invitation and including The Pyramid Society in this prestigious Forum.”

EGYPTIAN BREEDER & STALLION PROFILES CARISWOOD HANA (Ansata Sheikh Halim x Cariswood Mahrousa), owned by Cariswood Arabians.

CARISWOOD ARABIANS Keri and Carolee Wright Sandy, Utah

“With over 50 years of involvement with the Straight Egyptian Arabian, the preservation and perpetuation of this ‘breed within a breed’ is critically important to us,” says Keri Wright. “We’ve seen the ebb and flow of world events and the history of nations down through the ages, and because of this the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse as it exists today has had many guardians: Abbas Pasha, Ali Pasha Sherif, Lady Anne Blunt, The Royal Agricultural Society/Egyptian Agricultural Organization, The Pyramid Society, and thousands of private breeders the world over. Today the Straight Egyptian Arabian is known throughout the world as an important, vital, and unique source of classic Arabian type. “Here at Cariswood we seek to maintain this through generational excellence within a few select mare families. All of the mares descend from horses our family has bred or owned over the past 50 years. Cariswood Hana 92 < P Y R A M I D 2 0 1 9 - 2 0 2 0 Y E A R B O O K · W O R L D

HERITAGE C EGYPTIAN STUD

Deborah Hurdle, Lindsey Hurdle Oliver and Emily Hurdle Salazar Waxahachie, Texas “Heritage C Egyptian Stud has been breeding Straight Egyptian horses since 1986, always focused on producing athletic, conformationally correct, beautiful horses who love people,” says Debby Hurdle. “We are usually breeding one or two foals a year, though in 2019 we had 6 foals, a real explosion for our small operation. Our mare lines include the Obbeyan through *Magidaa and the Dahma Shahwaniyah through Farida. Our HC-bred horses have been successful in diverse areas of athleticism to include a National Top Five in endurance racing, a State Champion in rodeo events, and one in casual jumping work. We started showing in halter classes in 2011, and each year since

(except one) our HC-bred horses have won either a Top Ten on up to Gold Senior Champion. In 2019, HC Abla El Saghira (Ali Reshan by Ruminaja Ali x Ravenwood Sensation to Farida) won Scottsdale Champion Straight Egyptian Senior Mare and High Point Straight Egyptian. At the Egyptian Event she won Unanimous Gold Champion Senior Mare, Most Classic Head, and High Point scoring horse of the show, earning four 20s on her score card. “Each new breeding season presents an opportunity to produce greater beauty, character and movement. To this end, we will be using exceptional stallions from other nations, as well as our American sires. Visitors are always welcome at our ranch and the horses love the attention, so feel free to schedule your visit when you can.”

Egyptian mares,” says Sharon Redman. “I believe it is critical to consider both genotype and phenotype in my choices. It is my goal not only to breed foals that have that ethereal Arabian beauty, but also to preserve the sound athleticism, intelligence, and ‘tent disposition’ that are hallmarks of the Straight Egyptian Arabian.”

“At the prestigious East Coast Arabian Championships in January, the exotic bay mare Simeon Sahia (Simeon Shifran x Simeon Sehora) was crowned Reserve Champion Mare. This inspired the team to exhibit two fillies at the National Championships in November, where Simeon Shivah (Simeon Seifan x Simeon Seis) was crowned National Reserve Champion Filly. The hotly contested Junior Filly class was next, and the incredibly beautiful Simeon Shagah (Simeon Shifran x Simeon Shoshana) took the Championship from a classy lineup of fillies. “Marion Richmond said, ‘I have never participated in Straight Egyptian classes. I feel that if I cannot breed a horse who can be competitive against all Arabians, then what is the point of breeding at all? I am incredibly proud of these fillies, and the team that produced them. Together, we are a wonderful family.’”

“The Quiet Man EQ’s accomplishments include numerous class A wins, Top Three at Region 15, and class wins at the U.S. Egyptian Event,” says Cindy Jewart. “We are most proud of The Quiet Man EQ, who is showing in open western events. He has been a mounted shooting horse, trail, and pleasure horse. Most notably, his sweet nature has made him amateurfriendly and very trainable. “Due to a pending show career, no mares were bred in 2018. We are incredibly excited for the 2020 breeding season. We are breeding a mare with rare Polish lines, a successful western pleasure mare with Crabbet breeding, and one we are the most excited about is a new acquisition from Barmyre Arabians, whose horses have been extremely successful and admired worldwide. It is a small breeding farm, so we are thrilled by the rare opportunity to add Barmyre Amurrah to the 2020 lineup. She is an EBC winner of over $27,000, and is by Imperial Amir Kamar and out of the Imperial Mistaar daughter ESA Malaaka. She has the phenotype and genotype to produce a successor sired by The Quiet Man EQ.”

SIMEON STUD

Marion Richmond New South Wales, Australia “Simeon Stud has bred many of the breed’s most famous and successful Straight Egyptian show horses,” says David Gillett. “From World Reserve Champion Simeon Sadik, and Simeon Shai, Champion Stallion at Scottsdale, U.S. and Canadian Nationals, to Simeon Sharav, and most recently, the muchloved Simeon Sehavi … Simeon Stud is no stranger in the the winners’ circle. “While the last few years have been focused on breeding, Simeon Stud, under the eye of Mitchell Taff, and much to the delight of Australian audiences, has returned to the show ring in 2019.
