Shawn Crews International By Jeffrey Wintersteen

S

hawn Crews and the Egyptian Arabian have been synonymous for the last several decades. Recently, Jeffrey Wintersteen caught up with Shawn during a brief pause in her full schedule at her farm in Waco, Texas. Before we get into the new, give us a brief history of your beginning in the Arabian industry? Shawn: By a twist of fate when I was 17 years old, I ended up in Waco, Texas on the largest Arabian horse farm of its time, Bentwood Farm, where I fell head over heels in love with horses! Not only was my time at Bentwood about the best beginning education one could wish for on straight Egyptian horses, but it was there that I met David and Marion Gardner. Without a doubt, my life would be quite different today if David had not taken me under his wing so many years ago.

Above: An inviting patio space overlooks the green pastures at Shawn Crews International in Waco, Texas. Below: LV Gamblers Joy (Mishaal HP x Bint Bint Shahsria) owned by good friends Dale and Jackie Goodrich, looks out the barn window into the hay field.

It was also at Bentwood that I got to know Judy and Jim Sirbasku. Those families helped mold my career, including that of my numerous years at Arabians Ltd., and later as manager of their Thee Desperado-focused breeding and client service programs where I forged many deep-rooted friendships, including those with Mark and Deb Burke, Mike Cimino, Tara Maus and our clients.

specialized care goes overlooked. It is a stellar group including Asila Arabella CA owned by Gwen and Warren Soong, Princess Halima RCA and Princess Petronella owned by Mary Drysdale and Haanadi RCA for new owner Charles Romo.

Since Spring 2019, AHW has been following SCI and your team, but most of us did not know you have also owned your own farm for quite a few years sounds like you have spent a lot of time working on your place and getting the barn fluffed up for some incredibly special mares, tell us more. Shawn: Firstly, it is an old farm, Jeff. The records on the house say, “built in 1930?” Thank goodness the small barn, built in 1980, is solid as a rock and my hay field has been in production for about forty years. Location wise, my 30 acres backs up to the old Bentwood Farm property. To your question about the mares, the only way I know to describe how I feel about those famous girls, is that if two years ago someone had told me I would be looking at Bint Al Riyahh and LV Gamblers Joy in my pastures…I would have said “in my dreams.” So, to this day I am still pinching myself! Joy and Binty were best friends long before they came to my place, and with the birth of Joy’s filly last spring, I decided that I would only keep the three at my farm. I knew I needed a great setting for our clients' promising youngsters, the show and sales fillies and breeding mares that I help manage. We are fortunate that Arabian Acres owner Lyn Rogers has given us first right to all her stalls at Arabian Acres, which is about four minutes from my farm. Lyn looks after every detail and no request for our horses’ S H AW N C R E WS I N T E R N AT I O N A L > 2 < WO R L D

Shawn: That would be Magic Elixir (The Elixir x Rhapsody In Black). I will let his owners Mark and Deb Burke tell you his story… I have known Magic from birth and seen all his foals. When the opportunity arose, I jumped on the chance to manage Magic’s promotion. He bred a stellar group of mares in 2020...2021 will be exciting. How is it going business-wise with COVID-19 travel restrictions? Shawn: Well, given today’s environment, it is not surprising that a number of the finest horses in the world are selling sight unseen. If you asked twenty of the top breeders in the world, “have you ever bought a horse sight unseen and how did it turn out?” I bet most would say, “yes” and those decisions turned out to be the best they ever made. It all starts with trust. Looking back, many of the best horses I have ever sold and/or purchased have been purchased sight unseen. Another aspect of our program I've been working on during this time is a co-ownership program that will allow us to buy and/or sell some great ones, the kind that may not be attainable otherwise, we are close to launching that model, and I already have a favorite filly in mind.

Who is this impressive bay stallion you have been talking about recently?

“ In any color, this is an exceptional herd and certainly the most incredible collection of black Eg yptian horses on the planet. I am honored that Ayad Al Thuwainy let me select many f or him.” ~Shaw n Crews

I have been fortunate to travel with you to Kuwait to cover AHW feature stories on Al Ghanayim Stud. Easy to see why you are so passionate about Mr. Ayad Al Thuwainy’s family, horses, people and plans for the future. I imagine that for you not being there this past fall was hard? Shawn: Yes, it was…Ayad is one of the smartest people I know, and one of the smartest breeders too. He purchased the highest quality horses attainable, and mostly sight unseen. He asks for input, studies the horses and pedigrees and then Ayad makes up his own mind. The last foal crop we saw at Al Ghanayim Stud, the babies are outstanding! We all know how much Ayad loves black horses and how difficult it can be to successfully breed for a particular color, but he has succeeded. In any color, this is an exceptional herd and certainly the most incredible collection of black Egyptian horses on the planet. I am honored that Ayad let me select many for him.

It has been amazing to watch Ayad's farm grow and evolve. Not only do they have amazing horses, but the quality of care is exceptional. You could not ask for a horse that you bred and cherish to have any better life. Ayad brings together so many talented and wonderful people, I cannot wait to visit again, hopefully soon. You have amassed quite a collection of Thee Desperado and Mishaal daughters with your clients. Can you talk about that a little? Shawn: The Thee Desperado and Mishaal HP daughters and granddaughters are so predictable to breed. Today, they are the standouts in numerous, well-known breeding programs, in both straight Egyptian and non-Egyptian programs. Probably my biggest responsibility is to know where the best of those bloodlines are located, so when someone is looking to add those to their breeding program, I know where they are. I am talking about those kinds that, in many cases, have not previously been offered for sale. It is an easy task, as with the client base I work with there is a treasure trove of fantastic horses. Recently, when Michael Byatt, with the help of Jeff Wallace, was looking for a special mare for a client, Bint Maggie Mae (Thee Desperado x Miss Maggie Mae), owned by Dreamco Arabians was purchased sight unseen by Sheikh Hamad for Al Shaqab of Qatar.

Shawn: Our horses have been doing fantastic in the show ring. At the last Egyptian Event, we not only had an excellent show, but a great turn out of clients and just had a blast. We also had two in the Egyptian division at Scottsdale last year, the Silver Champion Filly and Silver Champion Colt. We have been working with Lucho Guimarães, he and his wife Ashley have been doing a remarkable job for us, not only in showing but the daily care of our horses, which to me is one key factor in why Lucho does so well. We have a three-horse string at Scottsdale this year and are excited to see them show in a few weeks!

DON STINE

Amethyst Acres Equine Center Inc. Mark and Deb Burke You have a longtime relationship with Shawn and it is easy to see you are working together more closely than ever. Can you explain how you all came to meet and what is in the agenda for the future? Deb: Mark has known Shawn since he was a teenager, but we really became friends while Mark was Farm Manager at Arabians Ltd. in the late 90’s. That is also when we met Mike and got to know him and many of the Colthill bunch. When Tara came in 2005, we watched her grow from secretary to Shawn’s “gal Friday” and protégé. These straight Egyptian horses are like family to Mark and me and it’s the same for Shawn and Mike…so between all the farms, it’s like one big extended family with lots of nieces and nephews! We’re all so proud of these kids, and we love sharing pictures of them with each other and the world as they mature and start their careers…whether breeding or showing or just becoming lifelong companions for someone. It brings great joy to have someone who has never met the breed, or has some preconceived notion about Arabians, actually come meet and fall in love with them. That’s what it is all about! Our future continues to be about breeding top quality straight Egyptians from the bloodlines we love and sharing them with the world!

Beyond breeding and sales, you are also finding success in the show side? Bring us up to date on this.

You have a couple youngsters owned by clients showing at Scottsdale, one of which will be Magic Elixir’s first to show in Arizona. Can you tell me about that? Mark: One of Magic’s daughters, Magics Prophecy will be showing at Scottsdale this year! She has his beautiful face, conformation, his amazing personality and she is solid black. Prophecy was bred by Barbara Carson-Campbell, on a farm visit, Sara Phillips fell in love with the filly and Prophecy is now owned by Sara and her mom, Wendy Klamm of Aset Arabians. We were all over the moon with excitement about Scottsdale and cannot wait to see her make her debut! Ironically, our other client horse showing at Scottsdale is also black. RA Nocturne is a stunning black colt out of RA Aleeyah, who was Reserve Champion Yearling at the Egyptian Event with Shawn in 2015. Nocturne is bred and owned by good friends Monique Siex and Greg Grow of Rockbridge Arabians and Simone Siex Boone of Y Tiempo Farm. The fact that Nocturne's grandmother is a Magic Elixir daughter makes us even more delighted! Both the colt and filly will be shown by the talented Lucho Guimaraes. There is a lot of buzz about your older stallion, Magic Elixir. What is his story and how did he come to garner such an impressive group of mares at twenty plus years of age? Mark & Deb: Magic has been part of our family for 22 years. He is a magnificent example of a top quality straight Egyptian stallion. But it’s because of his kind and loving personally that he has helped up introduce the straight Egyptian breed to thousands of people over the years…at events on our farm as well as events like wine festivals, parade of breeders and even Bryerfest in Lexington, Kentucky where he represented his dam, Rhapsody In Black. Magic is such an amazing soul…he loves people and is especially drawn to children. Not many breeding stallions are willing to accdomodate a stall full of kids petting and kissing him! His fan base is huge, so it was not surprising that when we opened his book, there was immediate interest. We are immensely proud that so many owners have entrusted their beautiful mares to Magic and excited to see the new kids when they arrive! Shawn has always loved Magic and we are so proud and grateful that she was willing to use her years of experience promoting stallions to help us introduce him to the world! We are blessed to have a great group of dedicated clients who share our love of these horses and look forward to working with Shawn, Tara, Mike and all of our clients for years to come!

Mike Cimino Colthill Crescent Arabians Describe your history and relationship with Shawn? Mike: I met Shawn in 1994 at Arabians Ltd. when I bought my first straight Egyptian Arabian filly. Shawn helped us select a filly and she just took us by the hand as we began to learn all about these horses. That filly created a dynasty for us and the same of her daughters for my friends and clients. We have a fantastic friendship, and an incredible business relationship. Not to mention, we have a lot of fun!

“Shawn has always loved Magic and we are so proud and g rateful that she was willing to use her years of experience promoting stallions to help us introduce him to the world!” ~Deb Burke

In what ways have things changed in the last couple years, and how have they stayed the same? Mike: The thing that has remained is the passion. We have a mutual dedication to be caretakers of the breed and share them with others. Shawn has her own voice and Tara is her indispensable number two. As for change, we are creating a nucleus of passionate breeders who lean on Shawn’s experience and understanding of pedigrees. The focal point is no longer standing six to ten stallions, but on the mares. Our focus is smaller numbers, and higher quality. One thing Shawn brags about is that you consistently obtained great conception rates at your farm. To what do you attribute that? Mike: It is really easy; number one: I have one the best veterinary teams in the country that specializes in equine reproduction, and two: Vickey Munn, my farm manager. I passionately believe in the most accurate and detailed record-keeping possible. When you combine that with a great vet, you can almost predict what is going to happen. For eight years in a row, we have had a 100% conception rate, whether we bred 4 mares or 13. One of your sales to the Middle East is really bearing fruit, can you tell us about that? Mike: The young sire is Montage CCA by Ramses Mishaal Nadir; unfortunately his dam, Bint Ananda CCA is no longer with us. He was the first foal from her and the moment he was born I called Shawn and said we have a “whiz bang.” She came to see him about a month later and was blown away. Montage went to the Event as a yearling and won it

all: Most Classic Head, High Point Futurity, and Unanimous Junior Champion. We made the decision that if a reasonable offer came, we would sell him. Shawn negotiated the sale with a gentleman in the Middle East and six weeks later Montage was on a plane headed for Saudi Arabia. We just received a video clip of one of his fillies and she looks magical. The farm does not breed straights, but they wanted Montage, who is out of a Mishaal daughter and sired by a Mishaal son, for his concentrated pedigree and extreme type for their purebred mares. It sure looks like it worked to me. I am really looking forward to the future and think the hub of great horses and dedicated, passionate people, we all have a lot to be grateful for and many reasons to be excited about the future.

"I am lucky to be surrounded by such a talented team, from across the country to my own backyard. David and Shana Reissig are always lifesavers. Missy Head for her positive support...always at just the right time. Dale and Jackie Goodrich have helped in so many ways to get this old place in shape. Pedro Toribio has helped with everything from working with Joy's baby to building fences. My neighbor, Susan Savage, who is the best hostess ever, makes me look good when I have guests. Susan has helped me with my record keeping and she gives my visitors priority at her BandB/guesthouse that is a short walk from my farm. So, sending all an invitation to visit anytime." - Shawn Crews

(The Sequel RCA x LV Gamblers Joy by *Mishaal HP)

Our farm name means "beautiful view" in Spanish and that embodies our small 30 acre "farmette" which focuses on breeding, raising and training quality straight Egyptian Arabians from the *Mishaal HP and Thee Desperado+ bloodlines. LV Gamblers Brava epitomizes our breeding program. She is a stunning 2016 bay mare and will be bred to the incomparable Magic Elixir in 2021.

"I fell in love with this filly the first time I saw her! She's everything I want in a mare and I am excited that she will be bred to Magic Elixir this spring." ~ Shawn Crews LINDA VISTA ARABIAN FARM, LLC. | LINDA LAW SPOTSYLVANIA, VA | 540.854.0046 | LLAW871787@LIVE.COM | WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/LINDAVISTAARABIANSLLC

MY SINCEREST THANKS TO OUR AMAZING CLIENTS AND FRIENDS!

I have watched you all with pride this year as your foals have grown, garnered important titles in show rings from Scottsdale, Arizona and Lexington, Kentucky to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Except for my family and my faith, nothing compares to my love of these horses and the cherished friendships they have forged on our behalf here at home and around the world.
