ur cover boy, the handsome grey stallion, Ebraz (Amer x Massamarie), bred and owned by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani of Al Shahania Stud of Qatar, and trained by Julian Smart, was recognized as the top-ranked Arabian racehorse for the 2019 season by the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authority’s Pattern Race and Handicapping Committee. He won the same honor in 2017, and is now the leading Arabian money earner in the world with over $3.74 million in prize money. Ebraz won seven of his eight starts in 2019, including the 2,400m H.H. The Amir Sword in Qatar in February and culminating in October with a victory in the 2019 Qatar Arabian World Cup, both with $1 million purses. As of this writing Ebraz is well on his way to an outstanding 2020 season with a win in the February 2020 Amir Sword in Qatar (his third win in that race) and his first “official” Triple Crown. In August Ebraz won, for the second time, the 1,600m Qatar International stakes at Goodwood. (See story on page 38.) Jockey Maxim Guyon rode Ebraz in five of his 2019 starts, including The Amir Sword, the Qatar World Cup and Goodwood. Maxim reflected on the mighty horse. “He is for me a really, really good Arabian horse. The best at this time. He’s very simple to ride because he’s very relaxed. He doesn’t pull, and he has a really good turn of foot. “I think he improved a lot in 2019, because two years ago, when he took the lead he would stop. He won at Goodwood in 2019 by 10 lengths with a really good turn of foot and he never stopped. Normally Arabians don’t have a turn of foot like he does. Also with him, you can do as you like. If you have a good draw in the gate, you can go or you can wait. When I won with him at the 2019 Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp, I was last, the pace was slow. But he has a strong finish, so that’s perfect. If the pace is fast, he can also finish strong. “And to think that he won the Triple Crown,” continues Maxim. “Nobody can do that! It’s crazy for one horse to win at 1,600m and

“He’s the best

2,400m. I think he can do it again. I don’t see a horse better than him. He’s the best Arabian horse I have ridden in my life.” Jockey Alan Munro rode Ebraz, then a four-year-old, to win the 2017 Emir’s Sword, and remembers it well. “Ebraz was a young horse, and his connections thought it was possibly a year too early for him because of inexperience, but they believed he had the talent. Ebraz raced with great courage in a tight spot and weaved his way through the crowd until reaching a lot of daylight on the final turn where he just had a few to beat. When I asked him to run he produced an outstanding finish all the way to

the line. He was well weighted but nevertheless he won brilliantly. On that day, Ebraz showed he could possibly be the champion for years to come.” Ebraz (by Amer) is out of the mare Massamarie (by Tidjani) out of Margau, who is a full sister to Al Shahania’s Emir’s Sword winners Djendel and Merbrouk. Massamarie also produced the Emirs Sword winner Mared Al Sahra (by Amer). A royal racing family if there ever was one… and it showed. As a three-year-old in training Ebraz commanded attention. “Any good horse has a presence,” says trainer Julian Smart. “Everything he did was just too easy. When you get

“On that day, Ebraz showed he could possibly be the champion for years to come.” a three-year-old and you think, ‘He shouldn’t be able to do that,’ you know you’ve got something special. “A second Triple Crown? That’s a bit greedy,” adds Julian. “But we can dream.” 3 b ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK b WORLD

arlier this year, Easter Man was honored as the 2019 Darley Horse of the Year and champion older horse, the third year he earned a championship. Easter Man, now an eight-year-old, was retired at the end of the 2019 season and is at stud at the Mississippi farm of owners and breeders Joe and Betty Gillis. Easter Man (Burning Sand x Angel Proof by NF Proof ) won 16 of 37 starts and earned $369,945 in his career. Easter Man was the champion three-year-old colt of 2015 and champion four-year-old colt of 2016 and might have had a title in 2017 or 2018 were it not for his very talented stablemate, Quick Sand AA, the 2018 Horse of the Year. Quick Sand is racing this year. In 2019, Easter Man won five of nine starts and earned $90,230. He led all champions in single-season earnings for the

year and won three stakes – two at Sam Houston and one at Lone Star Park near Dallas. With Easter Man retired, the 2020 title is open and several of the other five equine champions from 2019 have raced in the United States this year with championship aspirations. Aside from Easter Man, the other 2019 champs were RB Rich Lyke Me, the champion three-year-old male; RB Kinetic, the top three-year-old filly; Dance With Me BW, the champion four-year-old filly; RB Texas Hold Em, the champion four-year-old male; and Uptown Sandy Girl, the champion older female. RB Texas Hold Em (TM Fred Texas x RB Sand Storm by Burning Sand) was second in the third round of the Group 1 Maktoum Challenge at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on February 27 in his first start of the year. He was being prepared for a start in the $1 million Kahayla Classic at Meydan in late March when the event was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic had already wreaked havoc on Arabian racing in the United States and continued to do so through the spring and summer. As a result, the Darley Awards honoring the champion racehorses, and the people behind them, was a virtual event in March. Instead of a ARABIAN RACING YEARBOOK > 5 < WORLD

A six-year-old in 2020, Uptown Sandy Girl races for Jon Henningsgard and has won a remarkable 13 of 22 starts in her career. Uptown Sandy Girl followed her win in the Sheikh Zayed Cup with a victory two weeks later in the Darley Sprint on March 20, on one of the final programs before the coronavirus forced the closure of Sam Houston for the season. As spring unfolded, some racetracks – notably Delaware Park which hosts Arabian racing – postponed its opening day, limiting some racing opportunities. By early June,

warm group of racing friends and colleagues gathered for a weekend of sport and ceremony, computer and phone screens were the methods used to follow events. Before the pandemic essentially closed the country, Sam Houston Race Park hosted important stakes in February and early March. RB Rich Lyke Me (Majd Al Arab x Rich Frynd by TH Richie) was the easy winner of the Six Shooter Stakes on February 15 for owner and breeder Dianne Waldron, who races under her family stable name RoseBrook Farm. 2019 as top jockey, while Torrez has been top trainer for three straight seasons. Waldron has been named champion breeder on four occasions. This was the first time RoseBrook Farms was honored as owner, but Waldron was champion owner on three other occasions. tracks across the country were starting to resume business, but without on-track customers. Bets were placed via computers or mobile phones. By early summer, Uptown Sandy Girl had resumed workouts for a late summer and autumn campaign. RB Rich Lyke Me was beaten in his summer debut in an allowance race at Delaware Park in early August by the up-and-coming four-year-old Kissouur (Nivour de Cardonne x Blowing Kissis by Falina des Fabries), with the seven-year-old Quick Sand only third as a heavy favorite in his second start of the year. Those runners are almost certain to meet again in the final months of the year. RB Kinetic (Baseq Al Khalediah x Rich Kinkga by TH Richie) was second to RB Rich Lyke Me last winter and began her summer season for owners Byerly Racing with an easy win by 22¾ lengths against males in the Emirates Breeders’ Arabian Derby at Arapahoe Park in Colorado in early August Dance With Me BW (Grilla x Shall We Dance BW by Line Dancer) had an excellent start to the summer with consecutive wins in allowance races at Delaware Park for RoseBrook Farms and trainer Jerenesto Torrez. Carol Cedeno rode Dance With Me BW to those wins on July 4 and July 16. All the people involved with the five-year-old mare earned Darley Awards for their successes in 2019 – Cedeno as champion jockey, Waldron as champion breeder, RoseBrook Farms as outstanding owners, and Torrez as champion trainer. DEB MIHALOFF

AJC Tent of Honor Recipient

The DA Adios Partnership all helped Deb celebrate her Tent of Honor award from the Arabian Jockey Club. Pictured (l-r): Mindy Richards, Margo Wallace, Deb Mihaloff, Alan Kirshner, Hal Wallace, and Steve Richards.

Mihaloff ’s induction was well-earned. She is one of approximately 25 people to receive such an honor. Aside from owning and breeding Arabian racehorses, Mihaloff has been a leader in the sport’s governing bodies, an ambassador seeking to involve more people in the sport, and sometimes just an outspoken advocate for Arabian racing. Tough, yes, at times. Sentimental, very much so. In the early days of Arabian racing in the 1980s and early 1990s, Arabians raced on the East Coast at Delaware Park and Tampa Bay Downs. Delaware Park remains the home for the breed, although the number of races per year has declined in conjunction with a smaller pool of runners on the East Coast. During recent years, Mihaloff has been an avid supporter of racing not only at Delaware Park, but also opportunities for

he collection of mementoes dates to the 1980s – trophies, winner’s circle photos, VHS tapes, DVDs, and countless recollections of the horses and people who have been part of owner and breeder Deb Mihaloff ’s life in Arabian racing. Wait, VHS tapes? Yes, those old clunky cassettes, complete with grainy video and dodgy audio, hold precious memories for Mihaloff, who along with her husband Alan Kirshner, has been a fixture at Delaware Park races, and other venues across the nation, for decades. When you’ve spent this long in the sport the technology changes along the way. Last year, when Mihaloff was nearing her induction dinner into the Arabian Jockey Club’s Tent of Honor, she set out to compile a video of her accomplishments in Arabian racing. Off went a sizable collection of tapes, photos, and DVDs to Amanda Roxborough of Kylar Productions who produced a montage of highlights that played during a dinner in Mihaloff ’s honor in Delaware attended by more than 100 people. There was a lot of racing history in the collection. “I was able to thank all the people and horses who put me there,” Mihaloff said in early August, reflecting on the occasion. Nearly a year has passed since the event and she is still full of emotion. “To be able to share all that was such a wonderful evening.”

the breed at such storied Thoroughbred venues as Churchill Downs in Kentucky, Monmouth Park in New Jersey, and Pimlico in Baltimore. In the 1990s, the idea of top-class Arabians racing at those tracks seemed impossible, but thanks to the efforts of Arabian racing leaders, Mihaloff included, the idea came to fruition. While many of the Mihaloff-Kirshner winners have raced primarily at Delaware Park, two of her most-cherished results occurred at tracks in Southern California: Royal Atheena’s win in the 1998 Daughters of the Desert Futurity at Los Alamitos

The longshot win by Thess Is Awesome (Dahess x In Awe) in the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes at Santa Anita in April 2016 was another great moment for Deb. Thess Is Awesome was Darley Champion Three-YearOld Male of 2013.

and a longshot win by Thess Is Awesome in the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes at historic Santa Anita in April 2016. “Those are two of the most exhilarating moments of my life,” she said. The Santa Anita win, in front of a massive crowd on the weekend of the Darley Awards in Hollywood, is Mihaloff ’s favorite. “My most exciting win was the victory at Santa Anita,” she said. “That was my Seabiscuit moment. I bred Thess Is Awesome, and I bred his mother, too.” The list goes on. Mihaloff and Kirshner were honored with the Darley Award as champion breeders of 2002. Some of their individual horses honored with Darley Awards include Thess Is Awesome (Dahess x In Awe), champion three-year-old male of 2013; Royal Atheena (Monarch AH x Malabar Athena), 1999

Today, Deb and Alan have a herd of 25 broodmares at their Cre Run Farm in Doswell, Virginia. The mares have not been active in the last few breeding seasons, but that’s likely to end in 2021. Deb admits she has had difficulty leasing the mares to others in recent years, partially because she wants final say in the stallion selection. To her, some bloodlines hold greater appeal than others. Like so many people, Mihaloff and Kirshner have had a quiet year because of the pandemic. They have not been to the races since a wintertime trip to watch Thoroughbreds at Gulfstream Park, near Fort Lauderdale. Instead, they have followed their horses at Delaware Park on television or via computer. There are high hopes for the three-year-old gelding First Classs (Dahess x Top Of The Class), trained by the legendary Lynn Ashby, who has a decades-long involvement with Mihaloff and Kirshner. First Classs unseated his jockey and ran off before his first scheduled start earlier this year, forcing a late scratch, but he won his third career start at Delaware Park on August 3. The three-year-old filly Consider Thess (Dahess x Awe Dit) won her debut at Delaware Park on August 15. To relive those wins, the easiest way is to find replays on racing websites. They are the latest winners for Mihaloff and Kirshner and runners who could develop into stakes horses. If so, the highlight reel will need an update.

“That was my Seabiscuit moment. I bred Thess Is Awesome, and I bred his mother, too.” sprinter; Flaming Tron Ku (Ibn Kontiki x Flaming Emotion), champion older horse in 1987 and 1988; and DA Adios (Wiking x Sanibel IA), the Horse of the Year in 2002 and 2004. “I’ve been blessed with so many wins and have experienced some great horses,” Deb said.

DA Adios (Wiking x Sanibel IA) was the Darley Horse of the Year in 2002 and 2004.

EBRAZ (Amer x Massamarie by Tidjani) won the $261,600 Qatar International Stakes for the second consecutive year at Goodwood Racecourse in the United Kingdom on August 1. eave it to the world-class racehorse Ebraz to provide some sporting normalcy in a tumultuous year. Ebraz (Amer x Massamarie by Tidjani) provided a brief and welcome distraction to more important global issues when he won the $261,600 Qatar International Stakes for the second consecutive year at Goodwood Racecourse in the United Kingdom on August 1. Way back in February, when life had yet to be disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Ebraz made Arabian racing history when he became the first horse to sweep the Doha Triple Crown for older horses. The series begins with the Qatar International Stakes at 1,600 meters, at a mile, at Goodwood in the summer and is followed in early October with the Qatar Arabian World Cup at 2,000 meters, or 1¼ miles, at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. The series concludes with the Amir Sword Stakes at 2,400 meters, or 1½ miles, at Doha, Qatar, in February. The three races may be months apart – compared to the American Thoroughbred Triple Crown, which in most years is three races in a five-week span – but the Doha Triple Crown forces runners to be best at three distinct distances in three countries racing against specialists at those respective distances. “We already thought the Arabian Triple Crown couldn’t be done, and he has done it,” trainer Julian Smart said after the Goodwood win. “Maybe he can do another one. You never know.

Now we go to France for the Qatar Arabian World Cup, and who knows, maybe the unthinkable.” A small audience is likely to attend the Qatar Arabian World Cup program, the highlight of which is the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Thoroughbreds. French racetracks have had limited attendance since early July. The unfortunate aspect of the Qatar International Stakes was the lack of an audience. British racing resumed in early June without spectators, although some owners were permitted to attend as August unfolded. The same was largely the case at American tracks through the summer. Ebraz is a seven-year-old who races for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar and trainer Julian Smart. After the Amir’s Sword, Ebraz did not race again until a second-place finish in a Group 3 at La Teste Racecourse in France on June 29. Ridden at Goodwood by Maxime Guyon, Ebraz rallied from the back of a field of nine to reach contention with a quarter-mile to go. Ebraz took the lead with a furlong remaining and won by 1¾ lengths over Deryan. Tayf, who won the 2017 Qatar International Stakes, was third. “It’s not a crazy question to ask whether Ebraz might be getting better,” Smart said. “I actually think since his prep race, he has been training unbelievably well. He is actually lighter as a seven-year-old than he has ever been as well. I have always said the Arabians get better with age. How much better he can get at seven or eight, I don’t know, but he’s still going strong and, touch wood, he’s still healthy.”

HAYYAN (Munjiz x Dahwa), won the $59,200 Doha Cup at Deauville, France, on August 13 ridden by Ioritz Mendizabal. Hayyan races for Yas Horse Racing Management of Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi and is trained by Frederic Sanchez.

Smart admitted the team behind Ebraz may face a pivotal decision later this year – whether to keep the horse in training and send him to Qatar for the winter racing season or retire him to stud in France. The Qatar International Stakes was the first Arabian race of the season in the United Kingdom. The schedule was badly disrupted by the pandemic, so much so that the Dubai International Races held annually in late July at Newbury Racecourse were canceled, with plans going forward for a renewal in 2021. Other stakes were scheduled around the country for late summer and the autumn. Ebraz’s competition in the Qatar Arabian World Cup is likely to include Hayyan, who won the $59,200 Doha Cup on a soaking wet day at Deauville, France, on August 13 for his third career Group 1 win. The rain was so intense that the racing program for that evening was moved forward to complete the action before sunset. Despite the gloomy day, Hayyan (Munjiz x Dahwa by Tidjani) won by 1¼ lengths over the eight-year-old multiple stakes winner Lightning Bolt in a field of eight racing at 2,000 meters. Ridden by Ioritz Mendizabal for trainer Frederic Sanchez, Hayyan closed from the back of the field to catch Lightning Bolt. Hayyan, a five-year-old, races for Yas Horse Racing Management of Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi. Bred in France, Hayyan had a strong summer campaign in 2019, winning the Group 1 Qatar Derby for four-year-olds at Chantilly, France, in June, and the Group 1 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup, also known as the UK Arabian Derby, at Doncaster, England, in September of that year. While he finished a puzzling 11th in the Group 1 Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi last November, Hayyan rebounded to win the Group 2 Prix de l’Elevage at Toulouse, France, in May. “He has only had one bad run in his life, for which we have no explanation,” Thierry Delegue, racing manager for Yas Horse Racing Management, told the press at Deauville. “He is a real champion.

He goes in any ground. Today, he was traveling very easily in the straight, which worried us a bit as he has a tendency to slow down when he is in front on his own.” There is little doubt about the top three-year-old male in France. Hadi de Carrere won his second consecutive stakes in the $59,200 Al Rayyan Cup at 2,000 meters at Deauville on August 13. The Al Rayyan Cup is the top race for the division in late summer, leading to the Group 1 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains at Saint-Cloud Racecourse in Paris on October 2, two days before the Qatar Arabian World Cup. Hadi de Carrere (Nieshan x Viki de Carrere by Dormane) was ridden by Julien Auge for trainer Thomas Fourcy and owner Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari. Auge positioned Hadi de Carrere in a stalking role for the first mile and rallied through the stretch to win by a neck over Alsaher on a wet turf course. Fourcy said Hadi de Carrere is far from a finished project three races into his career. “He is a colt with a lot of strength, but immature,” he told the press. “One day, this type of terrain will suit him, but only when he has matured.” Hadi di Carrere was second in his debut at Toulouse in May and won his stakes debut at La Teste in early July in the Group 3 Prix Tidjani. Judging from the win at Deauville, the colt will have an important role in the final major stakes for three-year-olds this fall despite a disrupted year in European racing.

TEVIS CUP Endurance Ride

ARABIAN HORSE WORLD On July 28, 149 competitors left the starting line of the 63rd Western States 100-Mile Ride, better known as the Tevis Cup, with eagerness and trepidation of the trail that lay ahead; only 64 would complete. “The weather was brutal,” states Chuck Stalley, Ride Director of this annual endurance ride that starts in Truckee and ends in Auburn, California. “Not only was it hot, it was unusually humid. If that wasn’t bad enough, the air was smoky from the major fire 100 miles north (Carr Fire near Redding) and another 100 miles south.” The ride started at 5:15 a.m. The competitors left Robie Equestrian Park, near Truckee, where they gather and camp for the start of the event every year. They ride 13 miles to Squaw High Camp where water is available, as well as a veterinarian, if needed. Then, in another 8.5 miles, they are observed as they trot by, and veterinarians look for any lameness or problems with the horses. At Red Star Ridge, 28 miles, they have their first Gate-and-Go, a veterinary exam that must be passed before they may continue.
