I
f you went to Aachen the last three years, you’d be pardoned for thinking (three times in a row) — “How on Earth are they going to top that?” The show had swollen into a four-day extravaganza that involved three separate shows, an auction, singing, and laser shows. Where do you go from there? This year the answer was obvious: back to essentials. Back to a three-day horse show, minus the trappings. Since last year, the All Nations Cup and the European Breeders Trust have parted ways, and it was the latter that had been responsible for all the extras. So, gone were the European Futurity, the auction, the laser show, the
singers, the “vote & win,” and the “Festival” added to the name. While it made for a less spectacular weekend, it did put the focus back where it belongs: on the horses. Those of us who go there to see the horses had no problem with that. There were lots of beautiful horses to see and enjoy, whether you watched the halter or the sports competitions.
T H E GE R M A N N AT ION A L S The German Arabian Registry celebrated its 70th anniversary this year. While this was not reflected in any dramatic rise of entries in the Nationals classes, the quality was excellent and there were quite a few entries from breeders that are not among the usual

“big names,” including some newcomers. What’s more, they did very well and it was a very good day for small breeders. Before we get to those small breeders, the most successful exhibitor was, once again, Sax Arabians, who managed to win a title in each category – two Gold, two Silver, and one Bronze. All with homebred horses sired not by the usual “flavor of the day” stallions, but (with one exception) by their own homebred sires. Marshan (Meshan Ibn Kubinec x Marni), a striking copper bay with extravagant action who will be familiar to all regular Aachen visitors (he was National Champion Stallion in 2015), sired no less than two Gold winners this year: Gold Champion Junior Female Elisha Bint Marshan (out of Essdreama) and Gold Champion Senior Stallion Elshaan (out of Elena Bint Europe). Both of them were Gold Champion Foals in previous years — Elisha, who is a granddaughter of the fabulous Triple Crown winning Essteema, in 2016, and Elshaan, almost a carbon copy of his sire with the

same extravagant way of moving, in 2015. Keeping it all in the family, Marshan’s lovely full sister Malala – who is basically a female version – won the Silver Champion mare title. Sax Arabians’ junior sire Lamandro (EKS Alihandro x Lamana) also got a winner, the pretty grey colt Essandro, last year’s Gold Champion Foal, who won his class and was named Bronze Champion Junior Male. The only Sax champion by an outside stallion was the Silver Champion foal, Aziza Aarmaani, a lovely black filly by the young black stallion LF Aarmaan Vittorio (Magic Magnifique x LF Aliyyah Vivendi) out of Monira Bint Amir. The two foal classes used to be well-filled in previous years, but this year there were so few that

two-year-old Bel Mayleen (AJ Mardan x Maryse OS), a very stylish filly that still needs to grow into her frame. Sax’s Essandro, as already mentioned, won his class, but had to be content with the Bronze Title. Gold went to the colt that initially placed second by a very thin margin, CP Djuliano (Shanghai EA x CP Djulietta by AJ Mardan), bred and owned in partnership by Claudia Polte-Welbers and Frank Spönle. Claudia is a genuine small breeder with only a few horses, all descending from the El Shaklan daughter Dalila II, whom she acquired from Om El Arab in the 1980s. CP Djuliano represents the fourth generation from Dalila II. Silver went to the winner of the two- and three-year-old colt class, CBA Mattheus (Fadi Al Shaqab x Maharani CF by Psytadel), bred and owned by Claus Bouché. Unusually (but, as we shall see, setting a trend this year), the Gold Champion Senior Mare was a straight Egyptian: GE Maysoun (GR Amaretto x GR Maimun), bred and owned by Klaus
there was just a small filly class and no colts. The Gold Champion here was the weanling Bourhani Bellavera (RFI Farid x Bourhani Fadissima), bred and owned by Hannelore Bourdeaux, with Sax’s Aziza Aarmaani taking Silver, and Bronze going to the Ismer Stud’s IS En Vogue (Ascot DD x IS Epalla) – all three of them top quality fillies that could have been placed in any order. The Ismer Stud took the Silver Junior Female title with their yearling IS Emini, a look-alike daughter of Ascot DD out of IS Emina by Gazwan Al Nasser. Dr. Nils Ismer leased Ascot DD for two seasons and, after getting excellent results, is now the stallion’s co-owner and stands him at his stud. Bronze went to Beluga Arabians’ homebred

Buchberger. This lovely white mare, like many straight Egyptians, has taken some time to mature, but now she has really come into her own – beating the likes of Malala is no mean feat! Both her parents were bred by the late Erwin Escher, who accompanied the All Nations Cup and numerous other shows as a photographer for many years and who is still sadly missed. The Bronze Champion mare provided another success for a small breeder, Henrich Andreas Keller of KF Arabians, and his foundation mare DG Schamila. She is by the straight Egyptian Sahib, of Dr. Nagel’s breeding, out of the straight Russian HK Kamria. The stallion championship was a real highlight this year, with far more competition than in previous years. It was by no means an easy win for Elshaan, who also happened to be the youngest competitor. The Silver and Bronze winners deserve special mention, though, not just for the fact that they are father and son: Arian Shah (Jonathan El Ludjin x LM Alisha) and Camar

Corinna runs Camelot Arabians in Northern Germany, where she breeds purebred Arabians, AngloArabians, and Trakehners, naturally with an emphasis on riding qualities. Both stallions have passed their performance test; in fact Camar Qbinec had done so quite recently, winning the stallion performance test at Marbach with excellent scores. These are not the kind of horses you normally see at shows. Arian Shah, who was bred by Ferdinand Huemer in Austria, is a big horse with the kind of bone hardly ever seen in an age that appears to favor matchstick legs. He is

The All Nations Cup may have lost the “Festival” title and attendant trappings, but one thing it didn’t lose was entries. Where last year it was 119 horses representing 15 nations, it was now almost entirely of American breeding, with two 134 horses representing 21 nations – a notable rise close crosses to Ali Jamaal and Bey Shah. horse each. And in the case of Greece and Iran, that single horse even won a medal. On the other hand, there was not a single German entry this year. While it seems strange to have no competitors from the host country, it does reflect the growing dissatisfaction of German breeders with the international showing scene. It isn’t that they don’t have the horses; two horses that were bred in Germany made the Top Five of their class and qualified for the finals, and none of the National Gold Champions of the previous day would have looked out of place. Whether they would have won in this company is another question, but at least in the Netherlands, Israel, and Kuwait. breeding on his dam’s side and got two 20s for movement. Silver went to Britain, to the reigning British National Champion Junior Gelding LME Raphael (Emerald J x Lavinias Design by Master Design GA), bred and owned by the Smith family and Elaine Clare. He is just a yearling, but he still managed to beat the more mature horses to win his class, which was for one- to five-year-olds. Bronze was awarded to the Michalow-bred El Emando (QR Marc x Emanda by Ecaho), leased and shown by Stefanie Bovens of Belgium, who is no stranger to the medal ranks. He was third in the senior class, but the horse that had beaten him there, Britain’s Prince Psyche, did not show so well in the finals. What really pushed up the number of entries was
the number of yearling fillies this year, which were divided into three classes. Many of them were the daughters of popular sires, but the one that beat all the rest to become Gold Champion was sired by a newcomer, AJ Azzam (AJ Mardan x Ysadora by Marwan Al Shaqab), who won a host of titles as a yearling in 2015, including the Triple Crown, but had not been seen since. HDM Bella Ciao (out of Rahafa Al Hawajer by RFI Farid) is his first foal to appear at Aachen. Bred by Haras del Mar in Spain and now owned by Ajman Stud, which bred and owns her sire, she was first on four of the six judges’ cards in the finals. She was also the winner of the very first class. The filly with the highest score, however, was the winner of the huge second yearling class, FAM Donatella (Dominic M x D Crystal Moon by DW Magnum Fame), an allAmerican filly owned by Al Jawaher Stud, also in the Emirates. She took Silver in the finals, followed in Bronze position by Adwaa Al Arab (Emerald J x HK Jojo RLC by HK Keav Power), bred and owned by

Only four weeks after the All Nations Cup, the Arabian world was shocked by the news that ANC Manager Wolfgang Eberhardt had died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 27, aged 71. Wolfgang was such a longstanding and prominent member of the Arabian horse community, especially in Germany, that his death leaves a truly gigantic hole. He was the man who got things done, whether during his years as chairman of the German Arabian Horse Association (2005-2010 and again from 2015) or, back in the 1990s, with his own enterprise “Arabian Future”, which organized shows, conformation seminars, stud farm visits, and even a trip to Scottsdale, besides publishing a magazine. Eberhardt, also kept a small stud of straight Egyptian horses. Most notably they bred the stallion KEN Asam (Masoud x KEN Amal), the youngest ever winner of the state stallion licensing. Even after closing down both Arabian Future and his stud, Wolfgang remained active on behalf of the Arabian horse. can say and who never lost his sense of humor even in the most difficult situation. We are immensely grateful to Wolfgang Eberhardt for the enormous dedication he invested in the VZAP for many years. We are painfully conscious of the gap his death has torn.” For many years, Wolfgang had been the driving force behind the All Nations Cup, as well as its heart and soul. He spent many months of the year planning and organizing, personally supervised every aspect, made sure everything worked smoothly, seemed to be everywhere at once, and still had a kind word for everyone. Little did we know, when those who had died this year were honored during the gala evening on Saturday, that the man who had made it all happen would be the next friend whose passing we would mourn. The All Nations Cup will not be the same without him.

Federation for achievements in horse breeding. It is the first time this award has gone to a whole family, and deservedly so, as the stud is now run by the third successive generation of the same family. Three generations were present to accept the award: the current stud manager Dr. Nils Ismer with his mother Almuth and his young daughter Lina. The Ismer family is also famous for their zoological garden, and some readers may not be aware that Almuth Ismer has not only raised three children of her own, but also any number of orphaned exotic animals, including several tigers! One of the evening’s highlights was a jump and drive competition featuring two top level driving ponies and two Arabian stallions doing the jumping. One of them was the 2016 WAHO trophy winner Al Ashar, ridden by 11-year-old Neele Schlichte. This pair competes very successfully in open jumping competitions, promoting both Arabian temperament and athletic ability. On a more sober note, there was also a quiet moment in memory of the people the Arabian community lost this year, which include Dorothy Stream, DC and ringmaster Gijs Eggink, veteran straight Egyptian breeders Liesel Vetter and Willi
Poth, and of course “the greatest showman,” trainer and handler Ryan Jones, who died so unexpectedly at the British Nationals. In a moving ceremony, the trainers and handlers, judges and other officials placed white roses in vases beneath photographs of the deceased, which were on display in the hospitality tent throughout the weekend. The evening came to a close with an impressive quadrille of 20 partArabian ponies ridden by children. And talking of part-Arabian ponies – as always, the ANC dressage and jumping competitions were on all weekend, running parallel to the halter show in the dressage stadium. Though held on the same grounds and only a stone’s throw away from each other, these two events rarely mix and have entirely different sets of spectators as well as competitors. But it is worth mentioning that on this occasion, the prestigious Paltra Cup for the best results in L level dressage was won by Virginia Spönle, riding her 25% Arabian mare Adrette-D, while dad Frank Spönle was busy showing top show champions next door. Even though it often looks as if the show people and the riders occupy separate worlds, those worlds still sometimes overlap; and that is definitely a good thing.
