Wild Wild West unique event that focuses on FUN, Family and Friends. Two years ago it was decided to attach a “theme” to the show. This was something that wasn’t commonly done in the industry; thus, it was uncertain how well received something like this might be. One thing for sure, though — a “1950s” theme was sure to be a heck of a lot of fun. They were right! Exhibitors and spectators came to the show and were surrounded by poodle skirts and leather jackets, classic cars, an Elvis impersonator, and music from this bygone era. In 2008, the group decided to go with the theme, “Party Like A Pirate.” Everyone that was at last year’s show has memories of wrecked pirate ships; beautiful pirate wenches; treasure chests; elaborate pirate stall decorations; one of the most entertaining Capt. Jack impersonators in the country; and parties that go all night long. After all, you’ve never partied until you’ve “Partied Like A Pirate!”
f you haven’t heard of the Iowa Gold Star Futurity, you must be coming back from a four-year stint in outer space. There is so much talk about this amazing, up-and-coming show that it is impossible for you to NOT have heard about it. Another bit of truth: If you have not personally been to the heartland of America and have not visited the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, over Labor Day weekend and experienced the Iowa Gold Star Futurity Horse Show, then you are missing out on one of the most entertaining equine events in the country! The Iowa Gold Star Futurity is hosted by the Iowa Arabian Horse Association and has been around a long time. This Futurity Show has been up and down over the past few decades. However, it wasn’t until a new group of enthusiastic people took over its management that it exploded into what it is today—an extraordinary,

This year the Gold Star Group welcomes everyone to the “Wild Wild West.” Exhibitors and spectators can expect to see elaborate Old West scenes complete with cowboy shootouts; saloon girls; Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill look-a-likes; trick riders; whip artists; square dancers; and more! Also, the Gold Star Committee will be hosting a stall-decorating contest and will award the barn that best characterizes the Wild West theme in their design. There are so many parties throughout the weekend, one might ask: “When is the horse show?” Some of the festivities include: a Wild West Barn Party on Thursday afternoon; the famous Live Stallion Presentation on Thursday evening; a Jesse James Jamboree Karaoke BBQ Party on Thursday night, sponsored by Midwest II; a Buffalo Bill Breakfast on Friday morning, sponsored by the Minnesota Medallion Futurity; Tontos Tacos on Friday at noon; the coveted Purebred Stallion
Auction on Friday night; the Sundance Kid Breakfast on Saturday morning, sponsored by Strand Arabians; and a Tommy Garland Clinic held in conjunction with Wyatt Earp’s Weiners & Beans, sponsored by the Arabian Horse Times, at noon on Saturday. Now, do you think that there are enough parties? Well, they haven’t even gotten started yet! There is the Chuck Wagon BBQ, sponsored by Gruppen Training Stables, Magic Image Arabians, and My Way Ranch, featuring the live band, LOCKREN, and their Swisher Line Dancers; a mechanical bull and a live radio-remote broadcast with Kim Chase of Country Hawk Radio on Saturday afternoon; and, also, the Cowboy Campfire Cookout, sponsored by Matthias Arabians, after the evening horse show classes on Saturday. The fun starts all over on Sunday morning with the Will Rogers Junior Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast, sponsored by Scott Training. At noon on Sunday, Tommy Garland will hold another clinic followed later that afternoon by the Miss Kitty Square Dancing Party, sponsored by Prairie Gem Arabians. The whole weekend of food and fun culminates Sunday night after the evening session with the Happy Trails Hoe Down, sponsored by Beahrridge Arabians, showcasing the “Legends of the Old West,” featuring Buffalo Bill, Pecos Bill, and Annie Oakley. How the West Was Won … Gold Star Style ou may have heard of Doc Holiday, the Earp brothers, Billy the Kid, and all the rest that went down in history, but there was another. One man, one hero, one of the meanest son of a guns known west of the Mississippi … his name was “Marshall Russ.” He looked over and protected a small territory in the upper Midwest region of the country — a lesser known, but absolutely beautiful area called “Iowa.” Russ loved this land and fought long and hard to make it the special place it could be. To repay Marshall Russ, the people of the land awarded him with a coveted “Gold Star” badge to signify his leadership. He proudly wore this Gold Star on his lapel at all times. The Marshall loved that Gold Star and soon it became the symbol of the land he protected. Many knew that they were entering “Gold Star Territory” when they crossed the Mississipi and saw the beautiful land, gorgeous horses, and friendly people. The Marshall believed that fun and a laid back atmosphere was what made this Midwest land great. Make sure you check your attitude and negativity at the state line boys and girls because that ain’t what Gold Star living is all about. The people are sincere and honest, the land is prosperous, and the horses are among the best in the world. Gold Star Territory grew bigger and bigger each year as did Marshall Russ’s reputation for cultivating wealth and FUN!
