The Sandlers take Netflix in new comedy

Q: I was so sorry to learn of the death of Tony Bennett. Did he ever do a TV series? –Jane Baldwin, via e-mail

A: While he didn’t star in a weekly show himself, he did pop up occasionally on other people’s series, often playing himself if not an extremely close variation of him. Among those were “77 Sunset Strip,” “The Doris Day Show,” “Cybill,” “Entourage,” “Blue Bloods,” “Evening Shade,” “Suddenly Susan,” “30 Rock,” “The Simpsons” (in voice only, of course) and “Saturday Night Live.”

When Bennett appeared on television, it often was in a musical context, expectedly, His specials with Lady Gaga earned huge praise in the later years of his career, and besides being a frequent talk-show guest, he teamed up with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett and Lena Horne, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Glen Campbell and Jackie Gleason on programs over the years.

Life is a tapestry of tiny moments, but some moments are more significant and formative than others. Whether you looked forward to a quinceañera, a sweet 16, your senior prom or another teenage milestone event, it seems more than likely that the day came and went with a certain level of anticipation and expectation. Unfortunately, those two feelings often team up to create unattainable standards, as is the case in Netflix’s newest family comedy.

In “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” premiering Friday, Aug. 25, on Netflix, Stacey Friedman (Sunny Sandler, “Grown Ups,” 2010) is dead set on having the perfect bat mitzvah party. The film is based on the young adult (YA) novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, in which Stacey’s desires are made very clear: all she wants is “the perfect BCBG dress to wear, her friends by her side, and her biggest crush ever, Andy Goldfarb [Dylan Hoffman, “Next” ], to dance with her (and maybe even make out with her on the dance floor).” So naturally, when the day doesn’t exactly go off without a hitch, Stacey is massively disappointed.

Adding insult to injury, Stacey always seems to be in competition with her so-called best friend, Lydia (Samantha Lorraine, “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”), who is also hosting her bat mitzvah around the same time. When popularity, romantic crushes and other middle school dramas creep into the picture for Stacey, her flubbed ceremonial rite of passage threatens to ruin her reputation.

While the last name Sandler is most closely associated with “Billy Madison” (1995) and “Happy Gilmore” (1996) comedian Adam Sandler, the entire Sandler family is on board for this new production. The plot may revolve around the character played by his youngest daughter, Sunny, but Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler (“The Wrong Missy,” 2020), stars as a member of the Rodriguez-Katz family, while their eldest daughter, Sadie Sandler (“Pixels,” 2015), plays Stacey’s sister, Ronnie.

Directed by Sammi Cohen, the creative mind behind Hulu’s comingof-age romcom “Crush” (2022), “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” is just one of a series of recent films and television shows to highlight various moments in Jewish life around the world. Following the streamer’s expansion into Israel in early 2016, audiences everywhere were introduced to a plethora of content they may have been otherwise unfamiliar with.

As was the case with Netflix’s expansion into other countries, the streamer quickly began to offer Hebrew subtitles and dubbing for English and other language titles within Israel. Even more notably, Netflix also became a bridge between the Israeli entertainment industry and the West, encouraging onscreen representation and inclusivity for the Jewish diaspora.

Series like “Unorthodox,” “The Club” and “Fauda” quickly gained popularity alongside films such as “Maktub” (2018), “Shiva Baby” (2021) and “Tick, Tick ... BOOM!” (2021), about late Jewish Broadway legend Jonathan Larson (Broadway’s “Rent,” 1994), and Netflix began promoting more widespread Jewish content in the United States as well. In this regard, the Sandler family seems the perfect choice to front an American bat mitzvah comedy.

Despite the fact that the Sandlers tend to stay out of the limelight in the media, the well-known patriarch has shared his delight about his daughters following in his comedic footsteps. And if the Sandler girls’ real-life bat mitzvahs are anything to base Netflix’s new movie on, this is not one to miss.

Sunny, now 14, had her own bat mitzvah in May of last year. The festivities invitees included, among Sunny’s friends and family, Sandler’s “Murder Mystery” (2019) co-star and friend Jennifer Aniston, Twilight franchise star Taylor Lautner and performances by pop sensations Halsey (“Colors,” 2015) and Charlie Puth (“We Don’t Talk Anymore,” 2016).

Phone frenzy: co-workers reveal scam to the Capitol in ‘Telemarketers’

Phone frenzy: It’s time to hang up the phone and spill the gossip: the third and final episode of “Telemarketers” airs Sunday, Aug. 27, on HBO, with episodes streaming on Max.

Directed by Adam Bhala Lough (“Alt-Right: Age of Rage,” 2018) and Sam Lipman-Stern (“Live from the Streets”) – the latter of whom uncovered the scandal in question – this eye-opening docuseries dives into the twisted world of telemarketing, exposing a billion-dollar scam that rippled through the industry at large.

This limited series, according to HBO, “chronicles the 20-year journey of two unlikely employees who stumble upon the murky truth behind a seedy New Jersey call center,” introducing viewers to two former telemarketing employees – Pat Pespas and Sam Lipman-Stern himself – who met while working in the telemarketing industry during the early 2000s. At the time, Lipman-Stern was a 14-year-old high school dropout and Pespas a top salesman dealing with addiction issues. But eventually, their unlikely partnership led to the discovery of mass corruption and fraud throughout the industry: some taking place in their own backyard, as their own company advertised itself as raising money for charitable causes while in reality pocketing most of the money.

After their workplace was shut down by an FBI investigation, the pair became whistleblowers and continued their work bringing attention to the exploitative (and more often than not) illegal practices used fervently across the telemarketing industry, leading to (what HBO calls) “a madcap story of an unruly, low-wage environment and two longtime office buddies who find themselves hot on the trail of a sobering look at the dark side of American capitalism and the misuse of consumer trust.”

“With raw eyewitness footage and a comedic cast of characters,” says HBO, “this three-part documentary takes you from an anarchic boiler room filled with booze, drugs and debauchery to the halls of the United States Senate as a billion-dollar telemarketing scam unravels.”

From executive producers Benny and Josh Safdie (the Safdie brothers, both of “Uncut Gems”) and Danny McBridge (creator of HBO series such as “Vice Principals” and “The Righteous Gemstones”), “Telemarketers” airs its explosive final episode, Sunday, Aug. 27, on HBO, later streaming on Max.

Viewer’s choice: Lead your own romantic adventure with ‘Choose Love’

Viewer’s choice: Netflix is putting the power back in the viewer’s hands, as the streaming platform is releasing its latest endeavor into the interactive format with “Choose Love,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 31.

Joining the likes of Netflix’s other interactive programming, such as “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” (2018), “Cat Burglar” (2022), “Headspace: Unwind Your Mind” (2021) and “Trivia Quest” (2022), “Choose Love” comes from director Stuart McDonald (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and writer Josann McGibbon (“Runaway Bride,” 1999), who both have ample experience in the world of romantic comedies – but never before like this.

A “choose your own romantic adventure,” so to speak, this film welcomes viewers into the seemingly perfect life of Cami Conway (Laura Marano, “The Royal Treatment,” 2022). She’s working her dream job as a recording engineer, has a steady, longterm boyfriend she loves, and the future looks bright. That is … for now. What happens next is entirely up to you! As Cami’s story continues, the film will intermittently prompt the viewer (you) with questions asking which direction Cami should go next. Should she choose a new career path? Rethink her relationship? The future is totally in your hands.

As Netflix describes: “Cami feels like she’s missing out on life, but she isn’t quite sure how. Maybe she’s afraid of settling down for good with her boyfriend, Paul. Or perhaps she regrets abandoning the singing career she’d always dreamed of. What if Paul isn’t meant to be her forever? What if Rex, the Brit musician, is? And what about Jack, the proverbial “one who got away, who’s now suddenly back in the picture? As Cami faces an array of choices ranging from the seemingly innocuous to some major ethical dilemmas, viewers help her decide exactly what to do. The result? A bunch of possible storylines and endings, depending on what you pick.”

Thanks to “Choose Love,” the future is what you make it. With endless rewatch potential, and enough endings to rival 1985’s “Clue,” this foray into interactive romance also stars Scott Michael Foster (“You”) as Paul, Cami’s boyfriend; Avan Jogia (“Zombieland: Double Tap,” 2019) as Rex Galier, the British rock star; Jordi Webber (“Power Rangers Ninja Steel”) as Jack Menna, Cami’s first love; and Megan Smart (“Class of ‘07”) as Amalia, Cami’s sister.

The interactive journey begins (and begins, and begins again) when you press play on “Choose Love,” streaming Thursday, Aug. 31, on Netflix.
