Artistry abounds: new documentary shines light on the life of Michael Chow With boundless creativity and a taste for experience, artist and restaurateur Michael Chow has left his impression far and wide. Now, director Nick Hooker (“Everything is Copy,” 2015) tells his story from start to finish, as the feature-length documentary, “AKA Mr. Chow,” premieres Sunday, Oct. 22, on HBO. “Born Zhou Yinghua, he triumphed over trauma, loss and prejudice through acting and art before crafting a new identity as restaurateur Mr. Chow,” HBO describes. “After decades as a successful businessman and celebrated host to artists, actors, musicians, designers and models, Mr. Chow has turned to painting and once again redefined himself — this time, as the artist M.” Mr. Chow now has locations worldwide, serving authentic Beijing cuisine alongside creative original recipes, such as their infamous Chicken Satay and Ma Mignon. While offering a unique dining experience, Mr. Chow is also, according to the website, “A social event meant to be experienced with others.” They go on to explain: “Food is shared in a communal setting. Dishes are served
‘family style’ to ensure all guests get a taste of everything. The principles of Chinese cuisine are entrenched in a theory of harmony, dictating that all facets of the senses are stimulated equally. A balance of tastes, textures, fragrances and colors is presented to enhance and accentuate the other.” Since opening its flagship London location in 1968, Mr. Chow has now opened restaurants in Beverly Hills, Calif., New York City, Miami Beach and Las Vegas, now expanding to Middle Eastern diners as Mr. Chow is set to open its newest location later this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Serving famous clientele such as The Beatles (“Abbey Road,” 1969), Federico Fellini (“La Dolce Vita,” 1960), Frank Sinatra (“My Way,” 1969) and Jeanne Moreau (“Jules and Jim,” 1962), Mr. Chow is certainly one of Chow’s crowning achievements — but not his only.

‘Fear’ the undead: ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ returns with final episodes It’s the beginning of the end of the trail for some apocalypse survivors in the return of the final season of “Fear the Walking Dead.” The “Walking Dead” spinoff series’ midseason premiere airs on AMC Sunday, Oct. 22, just in time for an early celebration of the eeriest holiday of the year. Kim Dickens (“Friday Night Lights”) stars as Madison Clark, a high school guidance counsellor before the outbreak who now oversees the reconstruction of a survivors’ island colony. “Fear the Walking Dead” closes out an impressive eight-season run with six episodes to go before the big, two-part series finale set to air Sunday, Nov. 19. The first of now six spinoffs of the original series, “Fear the Walking Dead” premiered in 2015 and followed an extended family as they tried to survive in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The series detailed the survivors’ journey as they travelled and settled in California, Mexico and now an island off the Georgia coast. The island, known as PADRE, was constructed after the walker outbreak as a military operation intended to distribute supplies to new communities of survivors. A tragic walker invasion decimated PADRE, and since then, desperate survivors have used the island’s resources that once represented a more hopeful future. In the first half of the final season of “Fear the Walking Dead,” Madison landed on PADRE after a hard-fought journey to find the island with Morgan Jones (Lennie James, “Save Jenna Elfman in “Fear the Walking Dead”
Me”). The pair reunited Morgan with his daughter, Mo (Zoey Merchant, “The Price of Fame”), by force at PADRE before the show leaps seven years into the future. Madison is imprisoned on PADRE while Morgan spends most of the first six episodes of the season on his own mission, trying to save Grace Mukherjee (Karen David, “Legacies”) from radiation sickness before sadly losing her and setting off to Alexandria. With the dangerous former co-leaders of PADRE no longer a problem, Madison attempts to reinvigorate the spirit of PADRE and the island with the remaining resources available to them. While the final episodes of “Fear the Walking Dead” could certainly detail the establishment of a post-apocalyptic paradise, this is the Walking Dead universe after all, so there will undoubtedly be danger lurking in the shadows of PADRE. This season also stars Rubén Blades (“The Counselor,” 2013) as resistance leader Daniel Salazar; Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing,” 2023) as antihero Victor Strand; Danay Garcia (“Prison Break”) as survivor Luciana Galvez; Austin Amelio (“Hit Man,” 2023) as PADRE member Dwight; Christine Evangelista (“Mrs. Fletcher”) as Dwight’s wife, Sherry; Jenna Elfman (“The Twilight Zone”) as nurse June Dorie, who is on the run from PADRE; and one former cast member whose appearance in a trailer for the upcoming return of the series may have come as a surprise to “Fear the Walking Dead” fans. Daniel Sharman (“A Town Called Malice”) returns as Troy Otto, a member of the Broke Jaw Ranch community who last appeared in the third season of “Fear the Walking Dead.” It seemed unlikely that Troy would make any sort of comeback after he was bludgeoned, but leave it to the Walking Dead universe to bring someone back from the dead. In an official trailer for the upcoming season, Troy spits, “Madison, been a while,” before removing his sunglasses, revealing his chilling new appearance. Though one icy-white iris doesn’t seem too bad for having survived a hammer attack. The trailer also teases, in addition to some gruesome walker kills, a sword-wielding Victor teaming up with Madison to “save PADRE”; Daniel, Luciana and June all preparing for battle; nearly everyone staring down the barrel of a gun; explosions, car flips and muddy battles.

BEST ALFRED HITCHCOCK MOVIES “Strangers on a Train” (1951): Two travelers (Farley Granger, Robert Walker) make a pact to get rid of someone for the other person in a tale that’s been retold in numerous variations. “Rear Window” (1954): The production design is a star of this great thriller that keeps a light touch, as an apartment dweller (James Stewart) waylaid by a broken leg thinks he spies a neighbor (Raymond Burr) committing murder. “The Man Who Knew Too Much” (1956): Doris Day’s musical trademark, “Que Sera Sera,” was a byproduct of her starring with Hitchcock returnee Stewart as a couple forced into foreign espionage in a remake of Hitchcock’s own
two-decades-earlier thriller. Turner Classic Movies shows both this version and Hitchcock’s 1934 original on Saturday, Oct. 28. “Vertigo” (1958): Obsession rarely has gotten as haunting a screen treatment as in this visually striking melodrama, with Stewart again the star as an acrophobic detective who falls under the spell of a friend’s wife (Kim Novak) he’s tailing. “North by Northwest” (1959): A sensationally entertaining mix of adventure, humor and romance, this prolonged chase takes a businessman (Cary Grant again) from New York to Mount Rushmore, with James Mason the main villain and Eva Marie Saint a deceptive beauty.
“Psycho” (1960): Hitchcock’s achievement with the chiller that made people wary of taking a shower - thanks to the fate of Norman Bates’ (Anthony Perkins) motel guest (Janet Leigh) - is even more impressive in its capping of a threeyear run of Hitchcock classics that couldn’t be more different stylistically. Television’s “Bates Motel” recently expanded on the specific premise here. “The Birds” (1963): Rarely have electronic sounds been used more chillingly than in Hitchcock’s take on a Daphne Du Maurier story that puts a town under siege from our feathered, supposed friends.

away with $250,000 and the title of “Ink Master.” Hosted by Joel Madden, the competition is judged by DJ Tambe, Ryan Ashley and Nikko Hurtado. “All The Light We Cannot See” (Nov. 2, Limited Series Premiere) Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this limited series follows the story of Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti), a blind French girl, and her father, Daniel (Mark Ruffalo), who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo. Here, Marie-Laure’s path collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner (Louis Hofmann), a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure.

Magic makers: Penn and Teller search for luminary illusionists in new show
“Quiz Lady” (Hulu — Nov. 3, Movie Premiere) A brilliant but tightly wound, game show-obsessed young woman, Anne (Awkwafina), and her estranged, train wreck of a sister, Jenny (Sandra Oh) must work together to cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bonafide game show champion.
Say “abracadabra” and “alakazam” as the curtain lifts for an all-new season of magic when Season 10 of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” premieres Friday, Oct. 27, on the CW, welcoming an all-new face to the famed Penn and Teller stage. While Alyson Hannigan (“How I Met Your Mother”) bid farewell to the series at the end of its ninth season, she also set the stage for her enchanting replacement: Brooke Burke (“Melissa & Joey”), who is slated to take on the role of host, offering fans just the same flourish of excitement and insight as she joins the magicians on their journey to find the best in the biz. The series — filmed at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas — follows as the famed illusionist/comedian duo, Penn and Teller, welcomes hopeful magicians and illusionists to the hotel’s stage. Asked to perform their best stunts, the illusionists will ideally (and hopefully) fool even greats like Penn and Teller.
Four magicians perform their routines each episode, and following, Penn and Teller put their heads together and see if they can solve the trick behind the magic, then recreate the act for its original performers. If the duo can replicate the illusion, the game is over. Alternately, if they find themselves fooled, the magician in question will earn themselves a “Fool Us” trophy, alongside a five-star trip back to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn and Teller’s highly popular show, also held at the hotel. Seeing as a magician never tells their secrets, however, when the time comes to guess whether the duo has figured out the trick correctly, the answer must be presented without revealing any illuminating details to the audience, meaning Penn and Teller make their guesses via cryptic clues and descriptions, or through super-secret notes, shared only with their fellow magicians.
