With festivities, celebrations, and a turn in the weather, February and March mark two of the most exciting months in Barcelona. In the weeks leading up to the holy week of Easter, Semana Santa, visitors from all over the globe are attracted to Barcelona for a range of festivities, one of the most electrifying being: Carnival. The weekend before Ash Wednesday marks the well-known tradition of festivals known as Carnival. “Fat Tuesday,” as the parties are often referred to in various countries, encourages an atmosphere of complete indulgence and gluttony before the 46 days of lent begin. Barcelona is among many Spanish cities to take part in the celebrations of Carnival, boasting a parade filled with colorful costumes, music and sweet treats.

It’s Carnival Time! The festivities of Carnival will begin on Thursday, Februrary 16th this year, which is known in Barcelona as Jueves Lardero or “Greasy Thursday.” This day is also dedicated to indulgence before lent, and in Barcelona, people usually eat plenty of butifarra and tortilla. The parties continue all weekend long, with everyone dressed in masks, bright colors, and costumes creating a Halloween-style atmosphere. Tuesday, February 21st is the final day of Carnival, where tourists and locals alike attempt to soak up every last minute of extravagance before the beginning of Lent the following day. On Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, there is the funeral of the sardine. The king of carnival dies and the exuberant and flashy colors of the costumes turn to black to mourn his death.
Sitges Carnival Though Barcelona does partake in the festivities, the real party-goers will head over to the seaside town of Sitges. Only a 40 minute train ride away from the Catalan capital, visitors can watch this picturesque parish, known for its large gay community, light up in a colorful display of processions, dances, and music and beach parties during this week of fun. The most exciting parades to watch out for are on Sunday February 19th, and Tuesday February 21st.
