Welcome My Beloved Brothers & Guests, I am honored beyond measure to have you join with us as we celebrate our inauguration as your 35th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I humbly stand on the solid foundation that has been laid by those who have held this most esteemed office over the past 110 years. I thank them for their bold and courageous visionary leadership. I especially want to pay tribute to our living General Presidents who serve as my mentors, and to countless other brothers, as we guide our beloved fraternity onward and upward: James R. Williams, 25th; Charles C. Teamer, Sr., 27th; Henry Ponder, 28th; Milton C. Davis, 29th; Adrian L. Wallace, 30th; Harry E. Johnson, Sr., 31st; Darryl R. Matthews, Sr., 32nd; Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr., 33rd; and Mark S. Tillman, 34th. I am thankful to the Brothers of the District of North Carolina – my home state – for hosting this weekend’s activities. I am particularly thankful for Brother Attorney Jarvis Harris and the entire planning team for their hard work in the preparation and now the implementation of our inaugural activities. Equally as important, I am thankful to each and every one of you for carving out the time to be here. This weekend would not be the same without you. As we gather this weekend to reflect and to celebrate, I also invite you to join me in giving thanks to our Creator. I invite Him to be a part of all that we attempt to do during this administration. It is my belief that we will continue to accomplish our Fraternity’s mission on the local, regional, national and international stage by inviting Him to be with us in all that we endeavor to do. I hope to personally have a chance to fellowship with as many of you as I can while we are here in Greensboro. If I miss talking to you this weekend, I hope to see you as I travel to our regional conventions and then to our 111th Anniversary Convention, July 12-16, 2017, in Baltimore, Maryland.

FRATERNITY MISSION STATEMENT Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
A BRIEF HISTORY Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first alumni chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,” Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.

THE JEWELS OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY
Were No Ordinary Achievers.
Given racial attitudes in 1906, their accomplishments were monumental. As founder Henry Arthur Callis euphemistically stated—because the half-dozen African American students at Cornell University during the school year 1904-05 did not return to campus the following year, the incoming students in 1905-06, in founding Alpha Phi Alpha, were determined to bind themselves to ensure that each would survive in the racially hostile environment. In coming together with this simple act, they preceded by decades the emergence of such on-campus programs as Affirmative Action and Upward Bound. The students set outstanding examples of Scholarship, Leadership, and Tenacity—preceding the efforts even of the NAACP and similar civil rights organizations.
HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS became a practicing physician, Howard University professor of medicine, and prolific contributor to medical journals. Often regarded as the “philosopher of the founders,” and a moving force in the fraternity’s development, he was the only one of the “Cornell Seven” to become general president. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., he was a medical consultant to the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon his death in 1974, at age 87, the fraternity entered a time without any living Jewels. His papers were donated to Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. CHARLES HENRY CHAPMAN entered higher education and eventually became professor of agriculture at what is now Florida A&M University. A university funeral was held with considerable fraternity participation when he became the first Jewel to enter Omega Chapter in 1934. Described as “a brother beloved in the bonds,” Chapman was a founder of FAMU’s Beta Nu Chapter. During the organization stages of Alpha Chapter, he was the first chairman of the Committees on Initiation and Organization. EUGENE KINCKLE JONES became the first executive secretary of the National Urban League. His 20-year tenure with the Urban League thus far has exceeded those of all his successors in office. A versatile leader, he organized the first three fraternity chapters that branched out from Cornell—Beta at Howard, Gamma at Virginia Union, and the original Delta at the University of Toronto in Canada. In addition to becoming Alpha Chapter’s second president and joining with Callis in creating the fraternity name, Jones was a member of the first Committees on Constitution and Organization and helped write the fraternity ritual. Jones also has the distinction of being one of the first initiates as well as an original founder. His status as a founder was not finally established until 1952. He died in 1954.
GEORGE BIDDLE KELLEY became the first African-American engineer registered in the state of New York. Not only was he the strongest proponent of the fraternity idea among the organization’s founders, the civil engineering student also became Alpha Chapter’s first president. In addition, he served on committees that worked out the handshake and ritual. Kelley was popular with the brotherhood. He resided in Troy, New York, and was active with Beta Pi Lambda Chapter in Albany. He died in 1963. NATHANIEL ALLISON MURRAY pursued graduate work after completing his undergraduate studies at Howard. He later returned home to Washington, D.C., where he taught in public schools. Much of his career was spent at Armstrong Vocational High School in the District of Columbia. He was a member of Alpha Chapter’s first committee on organization of the new fraternal group, as well as the Committee on the Grip. The charter member of Washington’s Mu Lambda Chapter was a frequent attendee of General Conventions. He died in 1959. ROBERT HAROLD OGLE entered the career secretarial field and had the unique privilege of serving as a professional staff member to the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations. He was an African American pioneer in his Capitol Hill position. He proposed the fraternity’s colors and was Alpha Chapter’s first secretary. Ogle joined Kelley in working out the first ritual and later became a charter member of Washington’s Mu Lambda Chapter. He died in 1936. VERTNER WOODSON TANDY became the state of New York’s first registered black architect, with offices on Broadway in New York City. The designer of the fraternity pin holds the distinction of being the first African-American to pass the military commissioning examination and was commissioned first lieutenant in the 15th Infantry of the New York State National Guard. He was Alpha Chapter’s first treasurer and took the initiative to incorporate the fraternity. Among the buildings designed by the highly talented architect is Saint Phillips Episcopal Church in New York City. Tandy died in 1949, at age 64. COMMEMORATIVE SOUVENIR JOURNAL 9

Biography of
President Everett b. Ward BROTHER EVERETT B. WARD is a respected transformational leader with more than 30 years of national and statewide leadership experience. Dr. Ward was named the eleventh president of Saint Augustine’s University on April 10, 2015, by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Ward is the third alumnus to hold the post in the 148-year history of Saint Augustine’s University. Dr. Ward was appointed by the Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees on April 23, 2014 as interim president. During his appointment, Ward put forth an aggressive agenda focused primarily on three key areas: (1) returning the institution to financial stability; (2) strengthening the faith of students, employees and alumni in the viability of the institution; and (3) engaging the community and corporate stakeholders for mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborations. Transparency, shared governance and collaboration are the cornerstones of his administration. Prior to his appointment as interim president, Dr. Ward served as the director of the Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU)/Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) Program for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). In this role, Dr. Ward worked with university chancellors and presidents, faculty and staff in the areas of transportation curriculum development, research initiatives and student development. Dr. Ward served on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) HBCU/MIHE Workgroup. This workgroup is responsible for establishing and maintaining partnerships between FHWA and HBCU/MIHE universities. As a dedicated servant leader, Dr. Ward serves on several national, regional and statewide boards to advance opportunities for citizens throughout the nation. He is a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) where he serves as vice chairman of the DNC Black Caucus. He is also former co-chairman of the credentials committee and a former member of the DNC Rules and By-Laws Committee. In 1983, Ward was named special assistant to the chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party and subsequently was named political director. As a result of his political achievements, Dr. Ward made history in 1989 as the first African-American executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party. Dr. Ward has served on and chaired two university advisory boards. In recognition of his commitment to higher education, he was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s College (now University). From 2009-2011, Dr. Ward was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine’s University, his family’s beloved alma mater. A true Saint Augustine’s University
Falcon through and through, Dr. Ward was born on the campus at St. Agnes Hospital. Dr. Ward continued his family’s tradition by receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Augustine’s College. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from North Carolina State University (NCSU). In recognition of his academic and humanitarian achievements, Dr. Ward received the Steve Grissom Humanitarian Award from NCSU. Additionally, Dr. Ward served as a visiting lecturer in the Department of History. Dr. Ward was invited by the Taiwanese government to study the political, educational and cultural institutions of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In 2013, Ward earned a Ph.D. from North Carolina A&T State University’s School of Education. As a result of his academic achievements, Dr. Ward was a North Carolina A&T State University Wardham Scholar and a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Golden Key International Honour Society. Dr. Ward currently serves as vice chairman of the Association of Episcopal Colleges and Universities and recently accepted an appointment to the Board of Visitors of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C. Dr. Ward is a lifelong member of Davie Street Presbyterian Church, USA where he is a Ruling Elder and member of the Presbyterian Men’s Council. Dr. Ward is also a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

His client list includes Google, Oppenheimer Funds, the City of Cleveland and the Super PAC, Priorities USA. Over the last two decades Jeff has developed expertise in communications, political engagement and strategic consulting to create a unique career committed to developing solutions and systemic change. He calls it double bottom line impact and is committed to it for both his personal brand and that of his clients. Jeff states, ”We have to make fiscal and social impact as part of our metrics for success. If we have one without the other we have not done our job”. He recently sat with President Barack Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton for BET News and provides regular content on the nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Jeff formerly served as National Director for the Youth & College Division of the NAACP and held an appointment by Russell Simmons as the Vice President of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN). In 2014 Jeff worked with Steve Harvey on his New York Times Bestseller, Act Like A Success, Think Like A Success and is author of his own book Everything I’m Not Made Me Everything I Am.

President/CEO, Schott for Education On July 2, 2007, Dr. John H. Jackson became the President and CEO of The Schott Foundation for Public Education. In this role, Dr. Jackson leads the Foundation’s efforts to ensure a high quality public education for all students regardless of race or gender. Dr. Jackson joined the Schott Foundation after seven productive years in leadership positions at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He served as the NAACP Chief Policy Officer and prior to that as the NAACP's National Director of Education. Dr. Jackson also served as an Adjunct Professor of Race, Gender, and Public Policy at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. In 1999, President William Jefferson Clinton appointed Dr. Jackson to serve in his administration as Senior Policy Advisor in the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Jackson possesses a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Xavier University of Louisiana; A Master of Education in Education Policy from the University of Illinois' College of Education; and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois' College of Law. In addition, Dr. Jackson received a Master of Education and Doctorate of Education in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Our brother, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963 spoke about the “fierce urgency of now” as the immediate need for “vigorous” and “positive” action on civil rights issues. In 2017, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is committed to aggressively addressing some of the most pressing civil and social rights issues facing our communities. Health, Education, Criminal/Social Justice, Anti-Poverty, Housing, and Economic Development - are issues that Alpha must address over the next four years. As part of the inauguration of the 35th General President, Everett B. Ward, Ph.D., this discussion is one of first steps to Alpha elevating its voice on these, and other issues

Will Jawando is an attorney, activist, and community leader who is dedicated to expanding opportunity for all Americans. He most recently was a Congressional Black Caucus endorsed candidate for Congress in Maryland’s 8th District. He’s also served as Senior Fellow at the Aspen Institute, advising on youth workforce issues and as Director of Corporate & Government Affairs at Discovery Communications where he was responsible for developing and cultivating public-private partnerships. Prior to his tenure at Discovery, Will served in the Obama Administration as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he led White House efforts in the areas of education, poverty, and on issues relating to children and families, including early development of the President’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative. He later served as the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Education, where he acted as liaison to the business and philanthropic communities. Prior to his appointments in the Obama Administration, he served as legislative counsel for Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, and as a legislative aide in the offices of Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, where he drafted and negotiated major legislation in the areas of education, workforce development, election reform, civil liberties, and poverty.

Senior Vice President for Policy & Executive Director for Washington Bureau National Urban League Don Cravins, Jr. serves as the National Urban League’s Senior Vice President for Policy and Executive Director of the Washington Bureau. Cravins leads the development of the National Urban League’s policy, research, and advocacy agenda, while expending the organization’s impact and influence inside the Capital Beltway. Since 1998, Cravins has been a practicing attorney and a member of the Louisiana Bar Association. In 2004, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 2006, Cravins was elected to the Louisiana Senate. During his tenure in the Louisiana Senate, Cravins was heavily involved in post-Hurricane Katrina issues as the Chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee and was an active member of the Juvenile Justice Commission of Louisiana. In January of 2009, Cravins left the Louisiana Legislature to serve as Staff Director and Chief Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. In January of 2013, Cravins began serving as Chief of Staff for U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana. In addition to his duties at the National Urban League, Cravins is an adjunct professor at George Washington University. He also serves as a captain in the District of Columbia Army National Guard Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps with the 352nd Legal Operations Detachment.
