Once Traded For Tie Tack, “Lobsterman” Painting By Maud Lewis Fetches $53,100 At Auction

PBA Galleries Holds D.C. Universe Comics Sale Restored Copy Of “Detective Comics #27” Sells For New Record $275,000 By Karl Pass On Nov. 9, PBA Galleries of Berkeley, Calif., held its Batmanfocused premiere D.C. Universe Collection Auction, which featured a restored copy of “Detective Comics #27,” the iconic debut of “Batman,” selling for a recordbreaking $275,000. The sale had a 96-percent sale rate, with numerous comics exceeding their high estimate.

Ellington enjoyed “The Lobsterman” in his home for roughly 50 years before consigning it to New Hamburg, Ontario, based Miller & Miller Auctions, where it sold for $53,100. A rare Maud Lewis (1903-70) painting, traded by a London, Ontario, artist in the 1970s to a London goldsmith for a tie tack, recently sold at auction for $53,100. The late artist John Kinnear, a snappy dresser, was reeled in by a blue sapphire tie tack goldsmith John Ellington had in his jewelry shop and so the two men agreed to a trade: one custom sapphire tie tack for any painting Kinnear had in his studio down the street. When the time came to make

the trade, Ellington shied away from Kinnear’s own paintings, which were appealing, but too large. Instead, he set his eyes on the only Maud Lewis on the wall, a small painting of a pipe-smoking lobster fisherman. Kinnear initially resisted, saying that was his favorite painting, but Ellington reminded him he had said “any painting,” so in the end they happily did the swap. Ellington enjoyed “The Lobsterman” painting in his home for roughly 50 years before

consigning it to New Hamburg, Ontario, based Miller & Miller Auctions for their Oct. 14 Folk Art sale, where it sold for $53,100 (including buyer’s premium). This is the second Maud Lewis painting obtained through a noteworthy barter arrangement with Kinnear. In May 2022, Miller & Miller Auctions sold one of Lewis’s paintings, “Black Truck,” for a record-breaking $350,000. Kinnear had traded that painting to the owners of a London, Ontario, restaurant for a few grilled

cheese lunches. John Kinnear had struck up a friendship with the late Maud Lewis (1901-70), now considered one of Canada’s most renowned folk artists, and whose work has since drawn interest internationally. Lewis lived in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia, while Kinnear was in London, Ontario. In 1965, he had seen her profiled in “The Star Weekly” and on CBC-TV and was deeply moved by her poverty and Continued on page 2

Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster, Pa., is excited to once again present 18thCentury Yuletide Tours complete with period dance demonstrations. The museum’s Warm Hearth Committee will also provide open-hearth cooking demonstrations, and live harpsichord music will be played by Margaret Marsch, Faith Martin, and Mercy Martin on violin. Visitors will also be able to hear the voice of an actor portraying Edward Hand in his study recounting his memories of Christmas night 1776 when he and his men crossed the Delaware River and launched a surprise attack against the Hessian Garrison at Trenton. The Gen. Edward Hand Mansion will be decorated with festive greenery in the style of the 1790s. During the era that Edward Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, the traditional English Christmas was celebrated as “Yuletide,” a period of gatherings, games, ghost stories, dancing and dining with family and friends. Yuletide extended over the 12-day period from Dec. 25 (which was mostly a day for religious observance) and culminated in “Twelfth Night” on Jan. 6, which was sometimes celebrated with a

straightforward. If you want to keep them to enjoy and use, then do so. That would be the nicest memory of the person who originally bought them. But if you wish to sell them, I would take a breath and hope for pennies on the dollar as that sadly is all they will ever turn out to be worth.

Using a phrase from “The Lion in Winter,” I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about the painful challenge of disposing of family collectibles. Over the last several weeks, I have heard from several people who have faced the challenges of dealing with accumulated collectibles from one or both of their parents. Notice, that I did not include the word antiques here, but rather those collectibles that a certain generation seemed to fall in love with having.

way, is generally between 75 and 100. So, these items were never true limited editions. Demand is based upon whether there are people who want the item and thus are willing to pay. In this case, most of the people who wanted the items did pay for them. So the demand for them in the secondary market is pretty slim. I recall talking to a professional appraiser who attempted to contact one of the companies offering these modern collectibles. The firm had made the bold statement that their items had a “book value” established for resale purposes and thus were truly an investment. The appraiser contacted them to find out their source and if possible to get a copy of the book listing the resale values. No answer ever came. Sadly, these items appear with near constant frequency in auctions and flea markets across the country. And they go begging for anyone to buy them. I have been often asked what I tell people who have inherited these “treasures.” My comment is pretty

When I was a boy, “Parade” magazine in the Sunday paper was filled with advertisements for limited edition items that were guaranteed to grow in value. Similarly, mailers to our house promoted special packaging and containers for various products that because they were just so darned cute, they would have to be worth something someday. I never bought into the adverts, but assuredly a lot of people did. They purchased these items and squirreled them away in their attics and basements. Some even kept them in their original boxes and packaging so that they would be in genuine “mint” condition. These items represent the most flawed of all understanding about how the market works. Rarity and demand are what drive prices to increase on antiques and collectibles. In the case of most of these items, the “limited edition” really had no limits. It was as many items as the seller wished to produce. A true limited-edition print, by the

Paintings By Renowned Canadian Artists Maud Lewis And Joe Norris Share Spotlight Six Original Paintings By Lewis Combine To Sell For $184,680 As expected, the acclaimed Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-70) dominated the list of top lots in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s online-only Folk Art Auction on Oct. 14, but this time she shared the spotlight with two other Canadian luminaries, Joe Norris (1924-96) and Joe Sleep (1914-78). The work from all three artists posted high dollar results. Six original paintings by Maud Lewis combined to bring $184,680. They included a mixed media-onmasonite from 1967 titled “The Lobsterman,” bringing $53,100, and a 1950s oil-onboard titled “Two Birds in Winter,” for $44,250. All

prices quoted here are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. Four original works by Joe Norris totaled $57,230. They included a 1993 enamel-on-board titled “Hauling the Herring Nets,” selling for $21,240, and a 1995 enamel-on-board titled “Boat Landing,” for $17,700. An early 20th-century Victorian side table, later painted by the artist, with an autumn homestead in on top, brought $8,850, and a 1978 latex and marker-onmasonite by Joe Sleep, titled “Cat,” achieved $5,900. “This specialized sale was a celebration of

contemporary, post-1950 folk art,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “It was exciting to witness the support for both highly recognized and emerging artists. Maud Lewis, Joe Norris, Joe Sleep, Charlie Tanner, Collins Eisenhauer, Edmond Chatigny, Everett Lewis and Patricia Promaine were just a few of the artists represented, and I’m quite confident a few benchmarks were set for these artists in the auction.” “Patricia Promaine (1918-2012), who created approximately 200 pieces during her lifetime, is starting to get recognition. Her painstakingly detailed folk

paintings have a similar aura to those of American folk master Grandma Moses,” added Miller. Her painting, a hard-to-find ca. 1980 busy village scene painted on canvas board, realized $2,750. “While I expect that is a new record, I believe we will start to see even higher prices from Ms. Promaine moving forward,” commented Miller. “We strive to focus on the ‘better and best’ examples of artists, and in doing so the market responds with driving exceptional outcomes. The works by Maud Lewis, Joe Norris, Charlie Tanner, Collins Eisenhaur and Continued on page 7

Heritage Auctions graded 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC. It was among the most stunning examples of the poster Heritage has ever offered after setting the record, time and again, for this Family Dog masterpiece by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. The Dead delight hailed from the renowned collection of celebrated poster collector David Swartz, who has spent years tracking down posters featuring psychedelic bands and venues. The three-day auction also featured a collection of personal items from the life and artistic career of Dead cofounder Jerry Garcia. The treasure trove was consigned by Vince and Gloria DiBiasi, Garcia’s longtime personal assistants. About the DiBiasis, the Dead’s bass player, Phil Lesh, writes in his book “Searching for the Sound: My Life With the Grateful Dead,” “The DiBiasis were a steadfast, loving couple, with grown children, who had formed the only real constant in Jerry’s life (other than his music) throughout the turbulent

comings and goings of girlfriends, his illnesses, and the demands on his time and energy from every direction imaginable.” The archive highlights included Garcia’s personal sketchbook (which sold for $10,000), his briefcase with personal items (also $10,000), a double-sided drawing by Garcia ($9,375) and a pair of his beloved RayBan sunglasses ($8,125). Other auction highlights included The Grateful Dead 1966 “Skeleton & a 1968 Jimi Hendrix Roses” Avalon Ballroom concert poster, “Flying Eyeball” CGC graded 9.8, sold for $93,750. concert poster, the most sealed and slabbed first iconic concert poster image pressing of the scarce, for the American great and beloved and infamous 1987 this one signed by its artist, “The Black Album” from Rick Griffin, which sold for Prince, graded 9.0, which sold $55,000; a Beatles-signed for $25,000. artist and beloved New Orleans media personality, painted a mustached Buffett into that Crescent City canvas because of its central place in the singer-songwriter’s origin story. As Buffett put it in his 1998 biography, “A Pirate Looks at Fifty,” “The time I spent working and living in the French Quarter in 1967 changed my entire life,” and he described being “a hippie and a musician,” busking for spare change on street corners. In the painting, a figure lurks in the background, walking past and glancing back, Jimmy checking in on his younger self. Official prints made from this painting sell for big bucks, and the painting was celebrated upon its debut as Jazz Fest’s poster in 2011. An iconic “Skeleton & Roses” poster advertising the Grateful Dead’s Sept. 16-17, 1966, stint at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom sold for $93,750, rightly so for one of psychedelia’s most famous images. That’s especially true of this first-printing poster,

In September 2020, Soulis Auctions of suburban Kansas City, Mo., knocked down record prices at their headline-making sale of the Richard and Valerie Tucker collection of carnival shooting gallery targets. The collection was notable for two reasons: it was widely considered among the finest of its type, and it triumphed in spite of being sold in the midst of the pandemic. Offered alongside premier folk art, weathervanes, primitives and quirky handmade objects, the arcade targets found a niche in which to reside. In so doing, they added a vibrant finishing touch to a formula Soulis would refine in subsequent termed Mid-Americana Gallery Auctions, the next of which is slated for Sunday, Dec. 10. The pre-Christmas lineup includes several of the previously mentioned categories. The only way to uncover all of

Maud Lewis has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination. Joe Norris spent most of his life in the small hamlet of Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia. He began painting in 1972, after a heart attack forced his early retirement from the fishing and construction trades. His works depicted life along the seacoast, with scenes of wildlife, nature and landscapes painted in bold, saturated colors. Norris’s work included painted chairs, tables and chests, in addition to his two-dimensional paintings. After his work was discovered in 1975 by Maine antiques dealer Chris Huntington, Norris was able to live off of his income as

an artist rather than disability from the government. Work by Joe Norris can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, and in several corporate and private art collections across North America. Joe Sleep grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick. He spent his life working in the fishing industry and as a jack-of-all-trades before becoming a worker for the Bill Lynch Shows travelling carnival. It was not until 1973, when Sleep was hospitalized at the Halifax Infirmary, that he discovered his passion for drawing. The nurses

Simla, and Calcutta. Many were “universal,” which is to say the fine and decorative arts were shown along with an assemblage of livestock, machinery, and European manufactures. The exhibits were a world away from the fabled riches of the East that captured Lockwood’s imagination at the Crystal Palace. There were also contributions to world’s fairs as well as specialized exhibitions at the South Kensington Museum. These overseas events were the opportunity to showcase for a Western audience the native arts that Lockwood wanted to insulate from Western contamination. It was one more tension embedded in his mission. Lockwood’s work as a sculptor decreased during these years, but he found time to paint and draw. His drawings of Indian craftsmen were exhibited at the South Kensington Museum. They were precise visual documents of the weavers, carvers, and potters whose skills Lockwood studied and sought to perpetuate. In another vein, he addressed the frustrations and mishaps of housekeeping with native servants. The drawings were in the tradition of English caricature with the age-old abuses of toping and pilfering carried out by head boys (butlers) and maties (footmen). The drawings were the basis for a set of a dessert plates that would have been very much an “in” joke for the British when they were exhibited locally. Domestic life was also shown in the intimate sketches that flowed from his pen and illustrated his letters. The weather and transportation were popular subjects. In one, Alice is shown wearing a netted hat and holding a parasol, carried in a chair by bare-legged, sandal-shod indigenes. Victorian sketchbooks abound with such scenes of sustained respectability in the heathen land. In Lockwood’s hand, they were conventional experiences expertly portrayed. The range of Lockwood’s impressions was recorded also in his writings. He was a frequent contributor to the English-language press, with Alice as sometime ghost and regular unnamed source. Lockwood in his own words makes for bracing reading. He was a man of his time. He courted his wife with Browning. He had religious doubts. He marveled, “Considering the original texture of the native mind, it is wonderful how nearly well they work.” There’s more. A guidebook that he co-wrote with an English civil servant includes this observation: “Naturally, the Punjabi is somewhat clumsy and unhandy when compared with other races.” Here’s
