From candlelight tours to shopping and cookie sales, there is something for everyone at the Goschenhoppen Historians, Historic Trappe, Mennonite Heritage Center, Peter Wentz Farmstead, and Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center. Begin the celebration on Friday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a Christmas Market featuring local artisan crafts and food at the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville. Shopping continues on Saturday, Dec. 2, not only at the Mennonite Heritage Center, but also at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg and the Goschenhoppen Historians in Green Lane. Solomon Grimm Redware Plate Brings $37,800 By Karl Pass On Nov. 15, Freeman’s in Philadelphia sold a rare sgraffito decorated redware plate attributed to Solomon Grimm (17871847) to a phone bidder for $37,800 (est. $15,000-$25,000). Grimm’s vibrant slipware is long considered among the most iconic examples of Pennsylvania German folk art pottery, and few pieces have survived. The 9.5-inch diameter plate was marked in script on back German Christmas traditions. Chat with Pastor Muhlenberg in his office and then step into the dining room, where a festive meal awaits. The museum store behind the Muhlenberg House will be transformed into Santa’s workshop, filled with locally made artisanal goods, books, and other gifts. At the Dewees Tavern, marvel at the tiny wonderland of vintage woodcarvings from the famous Erzgebirge region of Germany displayed throughout the museum galleries and enjoy the new exhibit on local folk artist David Ellinger. Stock up on new examples of woodcarvings imported from Germany along with handmade Christmas decorations, Pennsylvania German redware, fraktur, and much more. Historic Trappe’s museums are open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Candlelight tours are from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Christmas tours and shopping will also be offered for the rest of December at Historic Trappe during regular weekend hours (Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m.) or during the week by appointment. The Peter Wentz Farmstead in Worcester will host their candlelight tours on Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. The soft glow of candles light the way as attendees explore the historic Wentz home, watch a cooking demonstration, enjoy holiday entertainment, and meet the Belsnickel. It should be no secret that the comic book industry has had a long love affair with the film industry. Well before Disney acquired the beloved comic book publisher Marvel Comics in 2009, Hollywood has always attempted to bring our favorite superheroes to the big screen. In the late 1970s it was “Superman,” based on the DC Comics character of the same name, and by the early 2000s both “Batman” and “Spider-Man” also made the jump to the big screen thanks in part to advances in CGI (computer generated imagery). By the time Disney took control of Marvel, plans were already underway to construct a cinematic universe of blockbuster movies all based on Marvel comic book characters. With the release of “Iron Man” in 2008, Marvel Studios scored their first massive success by choosing to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. At the time, many considered Robert Downey Jr. to be a controversial choice, but the actor was widely viewed to have played the role very well. Critics questioned if he wasn’t actually the real “Iron Man” in

Sadly, when we are talking about some of the most beloved franchises ever to grace pop culture, the market for the collectibles these items represent can also be affected. I am by no means suggesting that enduring collectibles like comic books and action figures are going away anytime soon, but it does go to show how markets in the antiques and collectibles trade continuously change and involve. It also shows there is a link between how these properties are viewed and the demand for their vintage counterparts in physical form. And in the end isn’t that the real lesson here? Make no mistake, true believers, you still have decades or more to go before some of these beloved treasures fail to ignite interest at auction after auction. But until that time comes, here is hoping Disney eventually gets this right. The future “Star Wars” and Marvel Comics collectors are counting on it.

disguise and not just someone playing the character. By all measures, this was an excellent start to the first phase of what is now known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since the success of that first film, Marvel Studios, now a division of Disney as of 2009, has created 33 movies and counting devoted to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this number isn’t even counting all the limited madefor-television series centered around the Marvel characters that have appeared on networks and platforms like Netflix, ABC (which is owned by Disney), or even Disney’s own streaming service, aptly named, Disney Plus. There was a time when Disney could not lose. “The Avengers” movies, again starring Robert Downey Jr. as “Iron Man,” proved to be extremely successful, and the most recent and supposedly final “Avengers” movie, titled “End Game,” grossed almost $30 billion at the worldwide box office. It seemed as though casual fans, comic book enthusiasts, and even regular movie goers just could not get enough of seeing these popular characters on the big screen. But “Avengers: End Game” came out in 2019, and something seemed to happen to the perception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe between then and now. To give credit where credit is due, Disney has made a lot of money from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even more than their closest competitor, DC Comics, who also owns some of the hottest comic book characters ever

standing collar that Littlepage probably wore while he served as a Chamberlain and diplomat to the Court of Poland between 1785 and 1795. It is embroidered with silk threads in geometric patterns that resemble egg- and dart-like motifs. The front has two large cross or welt pockets with pocket bags made from white linen. At some point, the center back was enlarged with a wedge down its middle and the adjustable tapes were removed. The buttons and buttonhole are unusually closely spaced. Fascinatingly, found in the pocket was a piece of paper that reads, “Si vous dedaignez mon vin je serais au désespoir,” or, “If you disdain my wine, I’ll be in despair.” In 1790, King Stanislaw August Poniatowski of Poland awarded Lewis Littlepage the Order of Saint Stanislaus. This ribbon is yet another highlight of the recently acquired Littlepage Collection. The sash, a redand-white silk moiré ribbon, was worn over the shoulder

with an enameled badge that hung from the bottom. The badge is in the form of a Maltese cross and is made from paste stones with red foils set behind them. It is mounted around a green-bordered, central white enamel circle showing St. Stanislaus wearing vestments with the letters “SS” to each side of him. Between each of the points of the cross, enameled Polish eagles radiate from the center. The Littlepage Collection contains two surviving ribbons, one with its badge and one with the badge missing. For a further look at the Littlepage Collection, please visit https://emuseum.his tory.org/, type “Littlepage” in the search, and all of the objects can be seen in fullcolor images along with interpreted text for each item. extends from side seam to side seam with five buttons at the top and two on each side. The waistband of the pocket contains two watch pockets with a button and buttonhole to close it. The back of the waistband retains its original iron buckle for adjustability. Beneath the flap there are two internal white linen pockets. Each knee closes with five buttons and buttonholes and a garter made to fit a set of knee buckles. Each of the garters are embroidered to match the rest of the suit. “The Littlepage collection offers a unique opportunity to study an individual’s style and how world politics affected their fashion,” said Neal Hurst, Colonial Williamsburg’s curator of historic dress and textiles. “It is such an amazing collection of clothing that tells an unbelievable story.” Another featured garment in this collection is a buff-colored, twilled woolen waistcoat with a tall,

the pattern the embroiderer was to follow. The central motifs were made from a silvered disc with the royal monogram set in garnets of “SAR” (Stanislaus Augustus Rex). Around the embroidered monogram is the Latin motto Praemiando Incitat (“Encouraged by Reward”), and surrounding the phrase is a laurel wreath from which radiates an eight-pointed star worked in spangles and bullion. The matching waistcoat is embroidered with blue, white and grey floral sprays. The borders down the center front were worked with copper bullion that is coated to make them blue. This waistcoat is made adjustable by two very large buckles attached at the back; buckles such as these are usually associated with the backs of breeches to make them adjust and are possibly a unique feature of Polish clothing. The breeches are made from a complex woven silk lined throughout with plain off-white linen. They have a flap front that

Heritage Sets Two New Auction Records For Vintage Video Game Consoles And Arcade Cabinets 1973 Computer Space Arcade Game And 1986 NES Console Topped $1.8 Million Video Game Auction In recent years, Heritage has set records with prices for pristine copies of “Legend of Zelda” ($870,000), “Super Mario 64” ($1.56 million) and more, but it was an array of vintage consoles that led its Video Games Signature Auction on Nov. 3 and 4. The event produced two new records for video game consoles and arcade machines. The auction topped $1.8 million in sales, with strong results for high-grade copies of many desirable games in the collector market. But the session dedicated to consoles in this event set it apart from previous Heritage auctions in the category. The highest price paid for a commercially available video game console was realized on day one: The Nintendo Entertainment System Deluxe Set Console from 1986, graded 85 NM+ by VGA, sold for $120,000. This is the console that revived the entire home console market in North America following a 1983 industry crash, making

it one of the most important gaming systems in the history of the industry. While the console was a success culturally and financially, unopened examples are ultra-rare, and this is especially true for the amazing Deluxe Set offered by Heritage, which included the NES console, two controllers, a Zapper light gun, the R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) and two boxed games: Gyromite and Duck Hunt. The other record set in the auction was the highest price paid for an arcade video game, and this one happens to be the world’s first arcade cabinet and the first commercially produced video game. While most casual game fans would likely name “Pong” as the first arcade and home console game, or perhaps Magnavox’s arcade-opener “Odyssey,” an entire history precedes them (including a cast of characters and companies connected to both); the first genuine arcade

“Grimm” and was once owned by Mrs. J. Insley Blair, who gifted the object to the NewYork Historical Society in 1952. Blair was in a Gilded Age family whose ranking was among the wealthiest in the nation during the turn of the 20th century. The Historical Society deaccessioned the plate in 1995 through Sotheby’s, where it sold to dealer John Gordon of New York City for $36,800. It was not part of the large sale Gordon (1921-2003) held through Christie’s in 1999. His widow, Leah Gordon, consigned it to Freeman’s. The restoration history involved rim chips and flakes professionally repaired as well as repair near the center. A related plate sold at the Winter Antiques Show in 2007 by Jim and Nancy Glazer. Other examples of Grimm’s work can be seen at the Reading Public Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Grimm worked in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pa., ca. 1815-25. video game, housed in a stunning futuristic custom fiberglass cabinet, was released in 1971, months prior to “Pong” and “Odyssey,” and was called “Computer Space.” This trailblazing creation emerged from the brilliant minds of Syzygy Engineering/Atari cofounders Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. Inspired by Steve Russell’s 1962 “Spacewar!” computer game, Bushnell and Dabney worked tirelessly to bring this game to life. The result?
