Hotel Stony Run Under New Ownership Early Deed Brings $5,000 At Onsite Sale By Karl Pass Chef and owner John Bakay along with co-owner Pat Holzer bought the vacant Hotel Stony Run in the village of Stony Run just south of Kempton in northern Berks County, Pa., in 2020. The 19th-century hotel and bar has had a storied past and has been neglected for several years. “While ripping up shag carpet in the attic during what has been a very extensive clean-up and renovation, we found the land deed rolled up in a sort of old floor board hiding space,” said Bakay. On Sept. 23, under tents, auctioneer Dean Arner held a sale for Bakay. In spite of a morning of rain and wind from tropical

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

A few weeks ago, I watched two buyers sizing up various galvanized tin watering cans to purchase from a dealer. Curious about their motivation since I am firm believer that if I can remember using it, then I just can’t understand why you would collect it. They were talking about how they saw a watering can being used in a shelter magazine and so they just had to have one. Before going on, a quick note that shelter magazines are those popular publications on home design and décor that have been around for a century and remain mainstays of

apples, those celebrity-highlighted antiques and collectibles would suddenly make an abrupt and gigantic leap in price. The trend rarely ever lasted, and prices returned to normalcy soon thereafter. But oh-how-wonderful if you were a dealer who benefitted from having that special item in stock and thus could sell it for any price to the aspiring collector. Readers who doubt this can look back on the crazy market fluctuations that occurred around Andy Warhol’s cookie jars, Barbara Streisand’s Arts and Crafts furnishings, and Harrison Ford and Bill Cosby’s interest in Americana. These celebrity collections all sent markets up as decorators and buyers scrambled to copy what the publications said was the hot decorating look or style at the moment. So, in surprise, I watched two headless watering cans walk out the door with proud new buyers. It made me scratch my head then, and frankly it still does now. I like to think that I am personally immune to such craziness in

the magazine publishing world. What bothered me about this is that the watering cans had no heads on the spout! Now to my eye, all the headless watering cans were flawed, and if I wanted a watering can, I would have passed on all of them. My logic being that they were broken, and since I have never seen a dealer selling piles of watering can heads, I was pretty sure that these would forever remain flawed. And yet apparently the shelter magazine they had looked at was promoting headless watering cans as some kind of new shabby chic marvel. Years ago, I wrote a column on the impact of these magazines on collecting. They really do establish the buying trends for antiques, particularly if the house or apartment shown belongs to a Hollywood star. And in those celebrity homes, the ones that I always worried about was where a decorator had decided some antique or collectible element deserved a place of honor. Sure as God made little green

New Book Features 98 Images From Vast Inventory Of Photographs, Some Of Them Famous Most of the subjects in the book were available for a very short time, but enough time to allow him to finish his assignments. They included such luminaries as Jimmy Carter, Coretta Scott King, Hank Aaron, Muhammad Ali, Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young, among many others. “But,” Sherman pointed out, “fireman Buzzard Sewell, Atlanta policeman Chester Head, singer Arlo Guthrie or activist Huey Newton are people some may have never heard of, but they will see them in my book.” He added, “Of the thousands of photos in my archives, two assistants, photo editor Amy Miller and designer and publisher Laurie Shock, did a remarkable job of picking 98 enlightening images.” “Witness” will be Sherman’s fifth book. Three of the previous four were corporate sponsored, while the fourth, published in 2013, had a Canadian publisher. All were photographic retrospectives, with an emphasis

Atlanta-Based Photographer Ron Sherman Publishes Latest Book, “Witness, A Photographic Essay Of Humor And Heart”

A new book by the acclaimed Atlanta photographer Ron Sherman, titled “Witness – A Photographic Essay of Humor and Heart” is nearing completion, with a target publication date of December 2023. The 144page coffee table book, 10by-12 inches, with a clothwrapped hard cover, features 98 images from Sherman’s vast inventory of thousands of photographs, some of which are quite famous. “Witness – A Photographic Essay of Humor and Heart” is a testament to my 60 years as a professional photographer documenting the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and much of the rest of the country,” said Sherman, who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, but has made Atlanta, Ga., his home for the past five-plus decades. “I had the privilege of meeting political figures, sports stars, musicians, school children, college students and corporate executives, who allowed me into their lives.”

Sarasota Estate Auction To Offer Dale Chihuly, Francoise Gilot, Eric Sloane, Robert Rauschenberg, And David Hockney Works

This is “Four Seasons” by Francoise Gilot (1921-2023). Andrew Ford, auctioneer of Sarasota Estate Auction, announced his Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, auction will feature some works from among the most popular 20th and 21st century artists, including Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Dale Chihuly, Peter Max, Francoise Gilot and Eric Sloane. This two-day sale, online starting Oct. 20, will highlight work by David Hockney (b. July 9, 1937). An important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. In 2018, Hockney’s 1972 work “Portrait of an Artist” sold at Christie’s New York for $90 million, becoming the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction. Ten pieces by Robert Rauchenberg (1925-2008), the American painter and graphic artist, will be offered. His works were early popular compositions which helped start the Pop Art movement. Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) will be represented with seven pieces of his work, including three of his paintings and four major art glass works. Francoise Gilot (1921-2023) was another highly sought after artist who was the muse

to Pablo Picasso from 1943 to ’53 and mother of two of his children. She learned her craft and continued long following their separation. A work will be offered from Eugenio Zampighi (1859-1944), an Italian painter and photographer who often painted in the style of earlier 19th-century artists. Eric Sloane will also be represented at this upcoming sale with a scenic painting of his beloved New England. In addition to the fine art painting and art glass, there will be over 250 lots of fine silver hollowware and flatware. One group in particular is a sterling coffee and tea service found in Peru. Just by weight, the set is very valuable, but it is also fine example of the silversmithing craft. Several collections of jewelry are also included in the sale. Contact Sarasota Estate Auction directly for in-house bidding or bid online with Liveauctioneers, Invaluable or Bidsquare. There will be a limited live audience. The gallery is open for previews, except Sundays, along with Sarasota Trading Company, located at 522 S. Pineapple, Sarasota, Fla. More further information, call 941-359-8700 or visit www.sarasotaestate auction.com.

Ron Sherman’s photography has been published in the pages of Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, Life, and Business Week, as well as in numerous newspapers throughout the country. on Atlanta. “The book I’m about to release is self-published,” he said, “because I wanted complete control over its production. I consider it my finest work.” “If Ron Sherman’s

photographic career had been limited to images published in national magazines, it would be a remarkable achievement, but ‘Witness: A Photographic Essay of Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) is mostly known for American art glass, such as this “Ruby Machia with Cobalt Lip Wrap.” Continued on page 11

Meander Auctions is pleased to announce the Auerbach Auction of Americana and Folk Art on Saturday, Oct. 28, in their new saleroom in Whipple, Ohio. The live auction will include art, furniture, textiles, and more from the collections of father and son, Chuck and Dan Auerbach. Chuck is a fixture on the antiques market and has been selling at shows across the nation for 40 years. His son, Dan, is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the Grammy-award winning blues rock duo The Black Keys. The sale will include over 200 lots, handpicked by Chuck and Dan, that encompass their love of folksy Americana, with an emphasis on the “graphic, quirky, one-of-akind side,” according to Chuck. The senior Auerbach reflected, “I’ve spent years hunting. I’m slowing down, traveling less and would like to pass on some of my finds to like-minded friends.” Bidders may bid live, in-person, as well as absentee, by phone, or live online at LiveAuctioneers.com and HiBid.com. Items and descriptions can be viewed using the online catalog, and an in-person preview is available Monday, Oct. 23, to Friday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. daily. “I was raised by an antique dealer who was always on the hunt. I was with him at the flea markets at the crack of dawn and out on the back roads on a never ending trail of exciting finds. Needless to say, I caught the bug and have been buying and collecting for years and years, much of it while out on the road with my band. Everything that I’ve consigned was handpicked by me, and if I had the room, I’d keep it,” described Dan of his journey as a collector.

Snell said, “In the book’s pages you will experience the evolution of Atlanta, meet some of the city’s most notable public figures from Jimmy Carter to Coretta Scott King to Ted Turner, and witness the celebration as Henry Aaron rounded the bases after breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium in 1974.” The 4-by-5-foot enlargement of that iconic Hank Aaron photograph is perhaps the book’s most recognizable image, showing the legendary slugger being congratulated by two exuberant fans as he jogs from second to third base on his way to baseball immortality in 1974.
