Advertising Excels At Rich Penn Three-Day Sale

In the antiquing world, people still use the word fresh to describe something that has both not been on the open market in a long time and is desirable. That’s the buzz word. In the auction business, it is important. Fresh-to-market has the ability to draw bidders in.

This occured at the May 12, 13, and 14 Rich Penn Auction when several thousand bidders from over a dozen countries bid on three considered fresh-to-market collections. With over 1,500 lots to choose from, including over 5,000 items from coins to cars and an array of antique advertising, almost 3,000 bids were placed before the live action began. Online bidders won 26 and in-house won 24 of the top 50 lots.

over the three days was a 1971 Ford

Advertising took some of the top honors right along with the cars. Breweriana advertising lithos were strong throughout. An exceptionally colorful and early one for Crescent Brewing Co., ca. 1885, featuring Aurora Lager Beer, sold at $17,100. The stunning litho was produced by Wm. Burford, an Indianapolis Lithographer, founded in 1875. It went to a buyer in New England.

Some strong prices were paid for neon. A 10-foot-long hotel double-sided animated sign for “Rooms $5.00 and FREE TV” flashed up a winning price of $8,100. An automotive skeletal three-color neon dealer piece for three lines under the Buick banner, Le Sabre, Invicta and Electra, sold for $6,000.

Spark plugs were an important automotive industry in the 1920s and ’30s and a competitiveone, including the dominant Champion Spark Plug Co.

Whether the word beach conjures up memories of sunning, surfing, or sand castle building, most of us have fond memories of lazy summer days spent at the ocean shore or bay.

That’s why the Haddon Heights Antiques Center is tapping into beach nostalgia for its July special sales display.

Shop goers will find generic vintage beach collectibles such as metal sand pails, sunglasses, seagull figurines, and miniature lighthouse replicas for sale. There will New Jersey shore resort specific items such as postcards, salt water taffy boxes, souvenir plates, beach tags, and vintage photographs. All in all, it promises to be a colorful, fun sales display.

The Haddon Heights Antiques Center is noted for its monthly

Mustang Boss 351. With just under 49,000 miles, it sold to a buyer on the East Coast for $47,600. Prices reported include buyer’s premium. The runner-up for top spot was another Ford product from the same consignor. This 1964 black-on-black Ford Galaxie 500 XL, with with just over 70,000 miles, sold to an inhouse buyer for $19,800. But it wasn’t a typical in-house buyer. A young auctioneer just out of auction school, named Sonny Jensen, stepped up and had the top bid on the phone. Jensen works for Rich Penn Auctions and fell in love with the Galaxie. “I’m really glad Sonny ended up with that car. He told me that he always wanted a ’64 Galaxie, and now he has one, and it’s a good one. It’s like it stayed in the auction family,” said Rich Penn.

A smaller competitor, the Splitdorf Ignition company, made their famous Green Jacket spark plugs in the 1920s. They made an impressive display for their products. Their counter display had superb lithography by American Artworks on the front and sides. The Green Jacket is no longer produced, but the display survived and sparked a winning bid of $3,900. Another display piece that did well came from Ford. A dimensional cast metal and wood Ford 1953 Jubilee sign was produced for dealers and celebrated the newhalf ton pickup. The same emblem showed up on the truck badges. The hanging sign realized $4,270. License plates also saw strong interest. A three-digit 1906

Five 19th-century gold and silver ingots from the Gold Rush and Silver Rush eras sold for a combined $159,807 at a four-day HighGrade Auction held June 15 to 18 by Holabird Western Americana Collections, online and live in the gallery at 3555 Airway Drive (Suite 308) in Reno, Nev. The sale featured nearly 2,000 lots of mining collectibles, railroadiana, numismatics, Native and general Americana, philatelic, bottles, stocks, bonds, sports and art.

But it was the ingots (blocks of steel, gold, silver, or other metal, typically oblong in shape) that captured the attention of bidders.

The top achiever was an 1880 Mathey, Kustel & Riotte silver ingot, which stood out from the others in terms of documented information, provenance and history surrounding the assayers whose names were on it. It is the only known example from Mathey, Kustel & Riotte and carried their logo punch and weighed 4.97 troy ounces. It realized $42,175.

A close second was the 1883 Peck Mine silver ingot from Prescott, in the Arizona Territory. The mine was discovered by Ed Peck in 1875. The ingot, trapezoidal in shape, was 4.52 troy ounces of silver fine 990 ($38,560).

An important rectangular silver ingot made by Edward Ruhling and engraved by Nye & Company of Virginia City, Nev. in 1869 for William Sharon, the infamous King of the Comstock, weighing 4.90 troy ounces, hit $37,500. A post-1890 silver and gold ingot from the Gould & Curry Silver Mining Company in Virginia City (“14.85 oz., .0285 fine gold, value $8.74; 963 fine silver, value $18.58”), showing the G & C bullion punch, found a new owner for $23,497, while a Conrad Weigand silver-gold ingot, No. 7091, 4.40 ounces of .558 fine silver and .0155 fine gold, different from other Conrad Weigand ingots and a classic dore bar from a silver-gold deposit (plus probably copper), made $18,075.

Internet bidding was facilitated by iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Day one contained 504 lots of transportation (to include steamer passes, railroadiana and transportation ephemera); militaria and weaponry; and stocks and bonds (to include mining, including the Aurora collection, oil, railroad, and

miscellaneous categories).

A pictorial business card for the Cripple Creek & Victor Stage Company in Colorado (“Do not miss a stage ride over the mountains”), with a vignette of a sixhorse Concord stagecoach, appearing to date to 1898-99, brought $2,500. Also, a pair of original Revolutionary War drumsticks, owned by James Baldwin, born in Saybrook Town,

Middlesex County, Conn., with provenance and a handwritten note from 1867, both 19 inches in length, commanded $3,875.

Day two featured 513 lots of art and general Americana (to include geographic sort and miscellaneous categories such as books, fire and artistic labels).

Historic Burlington Antique And Art Emporium To Celebrate Christmas In July

It’s July, with only six more months until Christmas.

I always get a warm, fuzzy

feeling when I see all the lights, when I hear the music and when I see the smiles on children. It is the greatest time of the year when families get together, exchange gifts and create memories that will last forever. In my family, we shop for Christmas throughout the year. I usually put my gifts in a drawer or closet, and in December I start pulling the gifts out to wrap. It is then I realize some family members have more presents than others. Some family members are easy to shop for, while others are very difficult. I’m sure you have the same dilemma that I have with finding gifts.

The Emporium, in Burlington City, N.J., is a fantastic Antiques and Art co-op to find unusual gifts for all ages. Presently, the Emporium

courtyard is filled with items for the avid gardener.

Throughout the month of July, the multi-dealer shop is bringing in a little bit of Christmas cheer, with the dealer’s sales showcase by the front door. Dealers will fill the showcase with items for your Christmas tree, items for a

Pennsylvania porcelain plate registered a price of $3,660. Another Pennsylvania porcelain plate, 1905, brought $3,000. Both were in excellent condition. Other great pieces like the Wolf’s Head neon clock and an Auto-Lite display cabinet each sold at $2,200 to the same in-house buyer.

There were notable highlights in soda advertising as well. A Neon “Cleveland” Pepsi clock with lightup marquee took a top price of just under $4,000. Another Pepsi piece, a double-sided 1956 cardboard sign in its original aluminum frame, brought $2,600.

From soda to tires to clothing, we’re still in the same price range. A Goodyear Tire &

Battery sign rolled away at $2,700. Another Good Year sign, this one for Farm Tire Service, brought $2,600. Another spark plug piece, the Champion “America’s Favorite” light up clock, sold at $1,600. A near-mint sign for International Clothing sold at $1,600. It was followed by another clothing piece, the Neon Products light-up clock for OshKosh B’gosh Work Clothes, sold for $1,450.

“When buyers say they want fresh, that’s what we should offer them. We did, and

they stepped up. That means it was a great auction,” said Penn. For additional information, visit www.RichPenn Auctions.com.

35 canvases. The Frick’s loans, possible during the renovation and enhancement of the institution’s historic East 70th Street buildings, were key to securing the Rijksmuseum exhibition’s historic scope.

“We are thrilled to have participated in this thoughtprovoking and visually stunning presentation of the great artist’s works. The show, one of the most talked about art world events of the year, if not the decade, offered audiences from around the world, both in person and online, new ways to consider Vermeer’s oeuvre, taking advantage of thematic groupings and recent technical analysis. Having never loaned our three works simultaneously before, we found the experience deeply enriching. As we celebrate the return of the works to Frick Madison, we look forward to engaging in stimulating dialogues about them with New York audiences,” commented Ian Wardropper, Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Director.
