Major Collection Of Rare Robots, Space

Mother: Whistler And Philadelphia”

Exciting Exhibit At Philadelphia Museum Of Art Opens June 10

Today, many nations and private companies are engaged in the space race, but there’s no contest as to who the winner is when it comes to space toys. Japan has been the clear and unchallenged leader in the manufacture of robots and space toys since the end of World War II. The imaginative designs of Masudaya, Yonezawa, Nomura and scores of other Japanese firms of the 1950s-70s are revered by collectors who love the toys’ fanciful looks and quirky actions, not to mention the wild artwork on their boxes. Milestone Auctions, the home of great toy collections, will offer a treasure trove of sought-after robots, space toys and dozens of other types of vintage playthings at their Saturday, May 27, Spring Premier Toy Sale.

The 881-lot auction is led by an out-of-this-world collection of postwar Japanese rarities, including Tetsujin, Astroboy, Space Ace and everyone’s favorite: a Nomura Walking Batman, with its original box. “There’s already a lot of buzz about these toys because, to our knowledge, no one up until now has auctioned a high-quality Japanese robot, superhero and character collection of this size,” said Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions.

The parade of highlights is led by an excellent battery-operated Target Robot from Masudaya’s “Gang of Five” robot series. It’s

unusual to encounter an example as clean, original and complete as the one offered by Milestone. Standing an impressive 15 inches tall and finished in glossy purple, red and yellow with a red circular target on its chest, it comes with its correct dart pistol and two darts. Even better, it retains its colorful original box, making it a top prize for any collection. Target Robot is ready for action and has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

Marching right behind Target Robot is his “Gang of Five” brother, Masudaya’s Radicon Robot. The big, boxy battery-op with a gray industrial-metal finish is also 100 percent original and comes complete with its correct remote-control box and antenna. Radicon is historically significant, as it is considered by popculture scholars to be the first radio remote-control-operated toy. It retains its original pictorial box

depicting a boy in a spacesuit directing Radicon with his remote control. It will be offered with an auction estimate of $15,000$20,000.

The androidal parade continues with a rare Yonezawa 13-inchtall 8 Man Walking Robot. This coveted toy is all original and finished in bright primary colors. Even better, it is in working order and comes with its fantastic-looking original Japanese-language box with visuals of 8 Man running in space as a rocket zooms past him. The estimate will be $6,000-$8,000.

The 8 Man is also the subject of a Yone/Yonezawa 12-inch battery-operated remote-control Thunderbird car. In complete, alloriginal condition, it has a retractable roof and steerable remote control. Its unbeatable graphics include flames along the car’s outer edges, Japanese writing, and images of 8 Man on both the hood (8 Man’s face) and trunk (8 Man against a checkered flag). Even the original box is a work of art, repeating the sensational graphics and colors seen on the car. This toy is a hot ticket and should easily command $3,000-$5,000.

Another rarely seen toy is Tada’s 13-inch tin wind-up Big X thin-leg walker. All original and complete, including its purple cloth cape and winged helmet boldly emblazoned with an “X,” the toy is in working order and comes with its original pictorial box. Hard to find in any condition, this striking example will cross the auction block with a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.

Bidding is expected to take off the moment Nomura’s batteryoperated Walking Batman takes the spotlight. “Every robot and superhero collector wants one for their collection, but on the rare occasion that one becomes available, there’s always very strong competition, and not just from American bidders,” noted King. The Walking Batman is

When James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s portrait of his mother, Anna Matilda McNeill Whistler, was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1881, few could have predicted that it would one day be an iconic American painting. Philadelphia newspapers initially paid little attention to the painting, the second work by the Lowell, Mass., born artist (1834–1903) to be shown in the United States. Its title, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Mother” puzzled viewers, as did its somber palette and sparse details. The painting, however, exerted a powerful force on local artists, and Whistler was surprised by the degree to which the public

Locati LLC, located in Pineville, Pa., concluded its April online auction on April 16 at noon. “This was another good sale with a diverse offering of quality lots,” concluded co-owner Michael Locati. Included in this sale was a Tiffany Studios hanging fixture, which sold for $6,000, hammer price. “Although many 19th-century academic landscapes are selling poorly in this

A rare Kyser & Rex cast-iron Santa in Sleigh toy pulled by two reindeer, 13 inches long, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. The very scarce Kingsbury motor-driven pressed-steel stake-bed truck, 25 inches long, with excellent paint, original white rubber tires, and J.C. Penney “Little Jim” decals, is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. A Masudaya (Japan) 15-inch battery-operated Target Robot from the elusive and highly coveted “Gang of Five” robot series is all original and complete and retains correct dart gun and two darts. The original box has some restoration. The toy is estimated at $20,000-$25,000.

all original, complete, and looks as though it has never been played with. When tested,

it worked perfectly. Together with its beautiful original box with images of Batman, Robin and the Batmobile, this postwar classic is on target to reach $6,000-$8,000.

Those who like their toys rare and exotic will be in the bidding fray for a Bandai (Japan) battery-operated Flying Space Ace. All original and complete with a colorfully decorated remote control and wire track for toy to fly on, it is accompanied by its original Japanese-language box with killer graphics. Very rare and in spruce condition, it carries a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.

Sometimes collectors of prewar Japanese toys have to exercise patience because the early productions they seek are so hard to find, particularly in nice condition. Milestone has something very special to offer those collectors: a 9-inch pre-WWII windup “Race Car ‘Glory’” with a full-body driver figure. The racer boasts distinctive colors of the Art Deco period, and its original pictorial box exudes

charm with its depiction of three children smiling with delight as they admire their toy car. The estimate will be $2,000-$3,000.

Cast-iron toys are always at home in Milestone’s toy sales. Among the highlights are a rare 13-inch-long Kyser & Rex cast-iron Santa in Sleigh toy pulled by two reindeer in all-original condition, estimated $6,000-$8,000, and an ultra-desirable Hubley castiron Harley-Davidson Hill Climber motorcycle. The 8.5inch-long bike is all original, finished in a scarce orange color with a driver “dressed” in black from head to toe. A sturdy survivor with no breaks or repairs, it will roll across the auction block with a $5,000-$8,000 estimate.

Collectors of pressed-steel toys will also be met with a trove of outstanding options

to bid on. A very scarce 25inch-long Kingsbury motordriven pressed-steel stakebed truck displays excellent paint and retains its original white rubber tires and J.C. Penney “Little Jim” decals. Its pre-sale estimate is $2,500$3,500. Also, a 23-inch-long Buddy “L” Junior Oil Tank Truck, all original including its paint, could roll out the door for a winning bid of $1,000$1,500.

Milestone’s May 27 Spring Premier Toy Sale will be held

at the company’s gallery at 38198 Willoughby Parkway, Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. Start time will be 10 a.m. ET. All forms of remote bidding will be available, including absentee, by phone, and live online through Milestone’s bidding platform or LiveAuctioneers. For additional information on any item in the sale, call 440-527-8060, email info@milestoneauctions.com , or visit www.milestone auctions.com.

This Masudaya (Japan) 15-inch battery-operated Radicon Robot from the elusive and highly coveted “Gang of Five” robot series is all original and complete with correct remote control and antenna. The original box has some restoration. The toy is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

The Tada (Japan) 13-inch tin wind-up Big X thin-leg walker is all original and complete, including cape. The wind-up mechanism works and is accompanied by original graphic box. The estimate is $4,000-$6,000.

1960s Clothing And Fashion Exhibit At The Allentown Art Museum

Groovy New Exhibition Now Open

The Allentown Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a major exhibition, “Fashion as Experiment: The ’60s.” “Fashion as Experiment: The ’60s” features more than 100 garments and accessories from the museum’s collection that illustrate the tumultuous mood of the decade, ranging from hippie looks to bold

ready-to-wear designs by André Courrèges, Vera Neumann, and more. This fun and colorful exhibition shows how 1960s youth used fashion to express new views and values and spark a wave of social and political change in America.

“Fashion as Experiment: The ’60s” continues through Sept. 24 and will be supplemented by ’60s-themed programs at the museum throughout the spring and summer, including a series of upcycling workshops, knitting, tie-dying, and more. Admission to the museum and galleries is free of charge. Hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to

4 p.m. and Third Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Fashion as Experiment: The ’60s” presents styles such as Mod and Pop along psychedelic looks that capture the decade’s exuberant and irreverent attitude. These styles set the stage for countercultural fashions of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including globally inspired designs as well as thrifted and handmade garments.

Early this year, the museum put out a call to the community for vintage family photos showing ’60s styles, and a selection of those are included in the exhibition on a digital display.

The museum is located at 31 N. 5th St., Allentown, Pa. For further information, visit www.AllentownArt Museum.org.

graduated in 1961. He attended Elizabethtown College. Dan began his 33-year career with Publix Shirt Company, based in New York City, starting in the pattern making department and working his way up to Director of Quality Control.

In 1968, Dan took an adult education class focusing on the folk art of the

Pennsylvania Germans, who immigrated to the Berks County area as early as the 1700s. He was enamored with

the woodcarvings of that era, so he began teaching himself to carve wooden figures using only a pocketknife, as did the early Pennsylvania German settlersin his area. Thus began his 50-plus year career in folk carving. Dan has been written up in many magazines and newspaper articles, and you can find his carvings in several historical societies. In 2016, Dan was honored by Conrad Weiser High School, receiving their Distinguished Alumi Award. Carving was truly what kept him going, especially in his later years.

Popular Diptych Book Series Continues

Four New Books On Titian, Riccio, Bronzino, And Rosalba Carriera Published By The Frick Collection

The Frick Collection expanded its popular Diptych series with four new titles, two already available, two to be published this summer. The books focus on “Titian’s Portrait of a Man in a Red Hat,” a bronze “Oil Lamp” modeled by Riccio, Bronzino’s “Lodovico Capponi,” and the recently acquired pastel “Portrait of a Man in Pilgrim’s

Philadelphia

Costume” by Rosalba Carriera, all from the Frick’s permanent collection. These 2023 publications, bringing the number of titles in the Diptych series to 13, provide fresh perspectives on Frick artworks by pairing art historical essays with contributions from contemporary cultural figures.

Currently available in the

museum shop at Frick Madison and online, “Titian’s Man in a Red Hat” focuses on an exquisite Italian Renaissance portrait from the 1510s. The book pairs an essay by the Frick’s assistant curator of sculpture, Giulio Dalvit, with a selection of portraits by artist Elizabeth Peyton that traces her engagement with Titian over

it is interesting as a picture of my mother, but what can or ought the public to care

about the identity of the portrait?” It turned out that the public cared greatly about the connection between painter and sitter, and the painting, known today as “Whistler’s Mother,” is among the most recognizable in the world.

To celebrate this exceptional loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the first time in 142 years that it will be seen in this city, the exhibition will explore the circumstances surrounding the portrait’s creation and its legacy in Philadelphia. Just as Whistler was inspired by Rembrandt’s etchings of his own mother, so too were local artists spurred by Whistler and their own ambitions to make depictions of their mothers. Some would respond directly to “Whistler’s Mother” while others took an entirely different approach. The installation will bring Whistler’s iconic portrait into dialogue with paintings, drawings, and etchings by artists associated with Philadelphia, Cecilia Beaux (1855–1942), Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937), Dox Thrash (1893–1965), Alice Neel (1900–84), and others, and invite consideration of the individual women represented and the relationship between artist and sitter, child and parent.

“The Artist’s Mother: Whistler and Philadelphia” will be on view from June 10 to Oct. 29 in the Colket Gallery (251) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The exhibition is generously supported by the Laura and William C. Buck Endowment for Exhibitions and other generous donors.

many decades. Pairing an engrossing essay by Ian Wardropper, the Frick’s Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen director, with a new poem by renowned English poet and critic James Fenton, Riccio’s “Oil Lamp” spotlights a Renaissance masterpiece in bronze. Bronzino’s “Lodovico Capponi” examines an enigmatic Renaissance portrait, pairing an essay by Frick curator Aimee Ng with a moving piece by acclaimed author, critic, and essayist Daniel Mendelsohn.

Finally, with an essay by Xavier F. Salomon, deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp chief curator, and text by Swiss artist Nicolas Party, Rosalba Carriera’s “Man in Pilgrim’s Costume” explores a spectacular 18th-century pastel bequeathed to the museum in 2020 by Alexis Gregory, the founder of Vendome Press.

likes of which we have not seen in ages.

Spring came early for most of us, and so at the time I am writing this column, the peonies are hours away from bursting forth in bloom. The year without a winter for the Mid-Atlantic has given us a glorious spring the

As an inveterate gardener and follower of the English landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll, I have been busy working on my perennial border. That has not stopped me from flea market haunting to add treasures to the landscape. What has come home this season? A marvelous wrought-iron gate that is very tall and got placed just in back of my daffodil clumps to provide a really striking spring contrast.

Then there is the vintage concrete flower urn. Now first of all, before you all snicker, yes, I did say vintage concrete. For

those of you unaware, there is a serious market in mossy worn concrete yard art. It has to have the right look and be of some quality for it to be valuable, but it is highly collected. The age is not anywhere near as important as the look. I recall sending to auction some very recent concrete pagodas that came from a roadside seller located on Route 30 west of Gettysburg. They were not old. But having kept them under the trees at our house in Mount Gretna for several seasons, they were definitely soft and mossy, and at least two bidders had to have them.

So vintage concrete is the

happening thing, and my new flower urn is wandering around the yard (weighing a lot) as I try and think of a place for it. I have been keeping it at the end of a pathway I created around some outdoor Art Deco building tiles laid flat, but it just does not look right. I need to find a good plinth, and we will be off to the races.

Garden antiques are something that everyone should consider. You can go overboard like the house not far from us that has strung glass gazing balls in every tree around the house. A little goes a long way, and thoughtful use can make a meh yard into something really

spectacular.

Vintage and antique garden art is treated differently than similar items for inside. I always encourage people, especially when buying cast-iron, to make sure that they are stable. A good wire brush cleaning and some protective paint is advised for sure. Concrete is usually pretty stable, but be wary of those statues where there are many cracks, as you may wake up some day after an extreme freeze and thaw to find you have a rock garden.

Hunting for garden art is an open field. One can find many specialist dealers who handle these materials. You can also certainly haunt the co-ops, particularly in spring when dealers tend to put such materials out. Finally, I love to look in the building salvage yards, as you can often find wonderful treasures

that just need some creative adaptation!

market, modern works like the one we offered by Anne Packard are sought after,” noted Locati. The Anne Packard oil-on-board painting outperformed the estimate of $500 to $1,000 and sold for $2,600. A Kazak rug with an estimate of $100$500 hammered for $1,300.

The leading lot was a set of four color lithographs by Spanish artist Salvador Dali. Dali’s “Playing Cards” sold for $14,000. The lithographs’ estimated value was set at $10,000 to $15,000. “We were happy to see the Dali

prints sell at the higher end of our estimate,” furthered Locati. In the late 1960s, Salvador Dalí partnered with a French printing firm to produce 17 designs released as limited-edition playing cards. With buyer’s premium, they realized $17,500.
