Sale to be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, Cordier Auctions will be offering a large collection of Qing Dynasty jade seldom seen at auction. This collection of jade belonged to George Henne (1866-1938) and was inherited by his family. Henne used the jade to decorate his handmade Chinese silk valuables storage boxes, frames, and other collectibles. Jade and related Chinese antiques were imported by Henne of 311 E. 23rd Street, New York, N.Y., from approximately 1900 to 1935.

The jade includes belt hooks, pendants, and hair decorations. The jade was crafted in China during the 1800s and earlier. The Qing Dynasty, a Manchu-led dynasty and the last imperial dynasty in China, covers the period from 1636 to 1912. Every piece is intricately carved and ornately designed. Designs include dragons (heads and full-body), fu bats, gourds, lingzhi mushrooms, praying mantis, fruit, flowers, Buddha, Confucius, and others. One example of the intricate carving and

This popular event will feature 60 exhibitors in room settings, offering an impressive breadth of antiques, including 18th- and 19th-century period American and English furniture; American country pieces in

For $125,000 All Proceeds From The Auction, Including Heritage’s Proceeds, Will Benefit The Alan Alda Center For Communicating Science At Stony Brook University

The combat boots and dog tags Alan Alda wore during the 11 seasons he spent as Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce on “M*A*S*H” sold July 28 at Heritage Auctions for $125,000. Every cent from the sale of the actor’s sole remaining “M*A*S*H” mementos will help fund what has become the actor, writer and director’s greatest passion: the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University.

“It’s amazing to see how “M*A*S*H” still has the power to make a contribution,” commented Alda following the auction. “And Heritage Auctions donating their usual fee is very generous. The Alda Center for Communicating Science will be thrilled. I know I am.”

Several client-collectors, all lifelong “M*A*S*H” fans, fought doggedly over the boots and dog tags, which had belonged to WWII soldiers before Alda reported to the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the summer of 1972.

Before filming began, costumers handed Alda a pair of scuffed-up combat boots, inside which someone had written in black marker the name of his character: “HAWKEYE.” He was also given a pair of dog tags, two tiny rectangles made of nickel and copper upon which the names of strangers had been stamped: Hersie Davenport and Morriss D. Levine.

A collection of 19th-century Qing Dynasty jade will be sold. This is a gilt bronze and celadon jade belt buckle. This bronze sculpture by Eugene Alexandrovich Lancevay (1848-86) is titled “Two Cossacks in the Steppe.” Eighteenth-century American period furniture, like this stately armchair, will be for sale at the York Show, along with thousands of quality “smalls” such as this paint-decorated box.

A Small Glimpse Into The World Of Dr. Seuss

If you are ever in Springfield, Mass., take some time to go to the Springfield Museum, located downtown. Keep in mind that Springfield is a very historic city, having been smack in the middle of Revolutionary War events. So you would expect that exhibits in the museum would naturally be related to the Revolution or Colonial America. Sure, it is discussed, but the main displays are for one the town’s most famous residents, Ted Geisel, and from the 20th century.

Yes, Ted Geisel was born

in Springfield in 1904. We know him as Dr. Seuss. Although he never had children of his own, Geisel sparked the imagination of children across the world. He created books that became favorites to children and adults.

As a youngster, Geisel drew street scenes of Springfield, as well of local attractions such as the zoo. Later, he was admitted to Dartmouth. There, he drew cartoons for the college humor magazine, and served as the editor-inchief.

However, after he was caught drinking alcohol, his position at the paper was

terminated. This was the time of prohibition, so buying alcohol was banned. He could no longer submit to the magazine as Ted Geisel. He devised a loophole, and started drawing and writing under a pseudonym. He was now known as “Seuss.” After attending Oxford, he became a cartoonist for several magazines.

In 1937, after being rejected by 27 publishers, Vanguard Press published his first story, renaming it “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.” It received positive reviews as being original, entertaining, and unique.

Random House enticed him from Vanguard, and his career was taking off. His immensely popular book “The Cat in the Hat” was published in 1957, and was his version of a child’s first book. It was a model of how children could learn to read while having fun. The story is about two children who get stuck inside on a cold day with, of all things, an

energetic cat.

Later in 1957, Geisel followed with another huge success, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The book stemmed from his own aversion about how materialistic holidays had become.

Those two books propelled Random House to being the leading publisher of children’s books. At the same time, Dr. Seuss was a celebrity.

However, celebrity status often brings controversy,

and Geisel was no exception. A couple of his books, “The Lorax” and “The Butter Battle Book” had political themes.

The popular “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” is still given as a gift to graduates. His characters and silly words still resonant today, and appear in film and on merchandise. Geisel passed away in 1991, but his legacy continues.

Geisel’s popularity still exists within the marketplace. A first edition, first printing of the 1957 classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” sold for $3,750 in a 2014 auction. The book was inscribed. An original, undated, signed sketch of “The Cat in the Hat” went for $6,600. A very unique item related to Ted Geisel sold for $6,875 in a Heritage

An original Dr. Seuss drawing of a dog wearing a scary mask and frightening three cats sold for $12,500, and an original cartoon illustration called “The Tiller of the Soil” has sold for $15,000.

Ted Geisel, Dr. Seuss, is an American icon, whose popularity has transcended the globe. He was unique in making children’s books fun and entertaining to read, where they had long been considered boring. As a result, literacy scores improved. He was hailed as a creative genius, and his popularity is evidenced by the sales of his books and merchandise to this date.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: How Paranoid Are We About Condition?

I recall an old collector’s paradigm that when all else fails, it’s about condition, condition, condition. I don’t disagree that the broken and battered items will bring less money than the new and pristine, but at what point, particularly on the grading of coins or guns, does it become an exercise in the ridiculous? My point, for example, is that I collect ancient coins. To put it bluntly, because of their history, I expect every single one of

them to be worn. Why? Because there was no ancient Roman coin collector who hid his stash away in a trunk that was put in the attic of the Parthenon and now has been discovered. The ancient coins come from the ground. Yes, there are those that are in great shape and those where you have no idea what it is. However, I am not sure that you can really argue that there is any uncirculated ancient coin.

Yes, I am exaggerating but doing so to make a point. Many collectors become obsessive about the condition issue. It is certainly relative. As a brown furniture guy, I accept that vacuum cleaners took their toll on most pieces over the last century. But also as someone who likes redware and English ceramics, the thunk of my thumb on a piece tells me that it is cracked and thus of no interest to me. Is there a middle ground?

Years ago, I was cataloging

Hoard Of Chevrolet Big Block Cars And Parts Goes To Auction

a number of items that had been consigned by the late dealer Chris Machmer for Conestoga Auction Co. Chris handled a lot of expensive stuff in his career, and so what I was working on were not run-of-the-mill plain crocks and candlesticks. The first item was a super rare Shenandoah Valley pottery bird. Rare beyond belief and even with some base chips, it was going to (and did) bring a five figure price. Wear was not the consideration with something so uncommon. However, the next item was a 4-inch jagged fragment of a cobalt

decorated crock. Clearly the original vessel had been shattered, and this piece of pottery was all that remained. The key here was that it showed a man standing and holding his hat. If the crock would have been whole, wow, what a price it would have brought. But who would buy a piece of it and what would you do with it? I am sure we are all hearing the voice in our heads of the mythical visitor who sees this fragment in a collection and says, “So where is the rest of it?”

Chris had priced the fragment at more than $2,000,

which seemed a huge amount to me. I went ahead and described it and was pretty anxious to see what it would bring. In the end, it was bought in because it did not hit its reserve (and I did not know that number). Clearly no one was racing to buy it. Was it because it was too damaged? Had the line been crossed? Stay tuned for more thoughts.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than

three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has workedin Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

In the July 2008 issue of “Hot Rod” magazine, Roy Langlitz’s collection of vintage cars, mostly big block Chevys, was named one of the “Greatest Hidden Treasures” of the automotive world.

An incredible hoard of big block Chevrolet cars and parts, mostly muscle carera Chevelles, Camaros, Corvettes and El Caminos from the collection of Roy Langlitz (known as Rob Carter), will come up for bid Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16 and 17, onsite, at Langlitz’s property in Rathdrum, Idaho, just outside of Spokane, Wash.

“Anyone who knows me knows I love Chevelles, and this auction’s got plenty of them,” said Yvette VanDerBrink, whose Minnesota-based firm

VanDerBrink Auctions is conducting the two-day event. “Between 125 and 150 Chevrolets will cross the auction block on day one, a great blend of project cars, almost finished project cars, restored cars and pickups, none of which run.”

VanDerBrink said some of the Corvettes in the sale are judged and rated, adding, “With regard to parts, everything you’d need or want to build a Chevelle or Camaro or El Camino is here. As for engines, we’ve got Ls5s,

Morphy’s Automobilia And Petroliana Auction Crosses The Finish Line

At An Impressive $2.3 Million Sinclair Aircraft Porcelain Service Station Sign Goes For $62,400

Led by an array of rare advertising signs, gas pumps, globes and early service station and motoring accessories, Morphy Auctions’ July 19 and 20 Automobilia and Petroliana Auction attracted bidders from coast to coast and cruised to a grand total of $2.3 million, inclusive of

buyer’s premium. The 1,000lot sale featured quality consignments from a number of advanced collections, offering bidders a chance to buy elusive pieces at high condition levels.

A fresh-to-the-market Sinclair Aircraft double-sided porcelain service station sign

with an early airplane graphic landed in the auction’s top slot. Measuring 48 inches in diameter, the coveted sign was pursued by not only petroliana collectors but also aviation enthusiasts. Propelled by multiple bidders, it rose to a lofty altitude, settling comfortably within its estimate range at $62,400.

Collectors will pay a premium to acquire gasoline signs that are known to be rare, but even more so if they include attractive images of vehicles. A ca. 1940s Paragon Gasolene double-sided porcelain sign with a tanker trunk graphic, its sides graded 8.0 and 7.9, respectively, sold for $27,600 against an estimate of $8,000-$16,000. A scarce Sunset Gasoline & Rainbow Motor Oil double-sided porcelain service station sign depicting a brilliant sunset flanked by images of a speeding car and airplane sold near the top of its estimate range for $24,000.

Neon car dealership signs, especially those in nice original condition, are always in

demand as well. The auction featured an outstanding dualbrand Cadillac and Oldsmobile die-cut porcelain neon sign with its correct bullnose attachment. A major statement piece measuring 82-by108 inches and graded 8.75+ condition, it sold above high estimate for $25,200.

A gleaming lineup of more than 160 gas pump globes crossed the auction block, with many tempting rarities in the

“Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth,” Now Open At Brandywine Museum Of Art

Exciting New Exhibit Is Opportunity To View Never-Before-Seen Work

Recently opened at the Brandywine Museum of Art, “Abstract Flash: Unseen

Andrew Wyeth” presents a remarkable body of 38 neverbefore-seen abstract watercolors. The artworks in this

exhibition are drawn exclusively from the nearly 7,000object Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, now managed by the Brandywine. Being held in the

newly renovated Andrew Wyeth Gallery, the exhibition also includes rare archival documents that show Wyeth’s encounters with abstract expressionism and geometric abstraction. From this fascinating material, a rich new picture of an iconic artist emerges that will be a revelation to many who think they know the full story of this creative life.

Andrew Wyeth once said, “My struggle is to preserve that abstract flash, like something you caught out of the corner of your eye.” He frequently called himself an abstract artist, a provocative claim from a painter who is best known for realism. Prompted by these statements, this exhibition is the

first to focus on this major American artist’s interest in the abstract art of his contemporaries and the roots of his own practice in abstract methods. It appears that Wyeth started a sustained practice of artworks that navigate the boundary between legibility and indecipherability in the latter part of the 1940s, just when the Abstract Expressionism of the likes of Jackson Pollock was rising to prominence. Wyeth’s immediate gestural and geometric compositions seem to have been motivated by a desire to capture concepts that were emotional and instinctive rather than intellectual throughout many years of creative practice. While this process sometimes resulted

in finished tempera paintings that were the direct outgrowth of loose and energetic early responses to inspirations in the world around him, this

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century

“Having wonderful time, wish you were here!”

It’s short. It’s sweet. It’s the perfect picture postcard message.

Postcards have been sending us their brief messages since the mid-1800s. The first is often credited to English writer

was not always the case. These artworks are all the more meaningful for the fact that the vast majority were purely personal and never seen beyond his studio.

“These works represent some of the most spontaneous and free work that Andrew Wyeth ever produced. If his temperas are the most formal expression of an idea, his studies show the artist thinking, and feeling, on paper,” said Karen Baumgartner, the exhibition’s curator and associate collection manager in the Wyeth Study Center at Brandywine.

According to Baumgartner’s collaborator in the project, William L. Coleman, Ph.D., the Brandywine’s Wyeth

Sales really took off in 1893 with the introduction of picture postcards at the Chicago World’s Fair. Soon, sending the folks back home a postcard became a rite of travel. Why waste vacation time writing letters? An eye-pleasing illustration on one side of a card, with a few cheery words penned on the other, got the point across.

If “a picture is worth a thousand words,” picture postcards were the living proof. And if one picture was good, a whole batch was even better. Enter the travel postcard folios.

Postcard folios (“accordion folders”) were 6-by-4.5-inch booklets. The cardboard cover

Visitors will gain privileged insight from these powerful watercolors into the making of his better-known representational paintings as he staked out a path all his own.”

On view through Feb. 18, 2024, “Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth” contains previously unexhibited works that span the entirety of Wyeth’s career from the 1930s to an example discovered in the studio after his death in 2009. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated

Guides feeding monkeys, and milking rattlesnakes, and a merry crowd aboard a glass-bottom boat, there is a travel postcard with them. The back cover interior gave a breathless preview of what awaited travelers at “Nature’s Underwater Playground”: “shell mountains, with their faces dipped in snow,” rainbow colors, iridescence at its best, a “jungle cruise one will never forget.”

catalogue, coming in the fall of 2023. Published by the Brandywine, the catalogue will feature essays by Coleman and Baumgartner, as well as Eric Aho, a noted contemporary painter.

Following its presentation at the Brandywine, which centers on Wyeth’s Pennsylvania work, a second part of “Abstract Flash” will open at the Farnsworth Art Museum (Rockland, Maine) in summer 2024, focused on the artist’s Maine abstractions. All artworks in both exhibitions are from the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, the support of which has made possible these exhibitions and the accompanying catalogue.

episodes as Capt. Benjamin Franklin Pierce, Alda slipped on those boots. Every day, he put those dog tags over his head. And every day, he thought about the men who had worn them before him. These boots and tags were the sole mementos Alda held on to upon bidding goodbye, farewell and amen to the beloved series in 1983.

“Putting on the boots and lacing up the boots, I was literally stepping into somebody’s shoes,” the 87-year-old Alda said before the auction. “That feel of the leather on my foot, the comfort of being in those shoes, makes you feel more at home in the character.”

He helped found the Alda Center for Communicating Science after 12 years spent hosting another long-running series, PBS’ “Scientific American Frontiers.” That experience sparked in Alda the idea that scientists could more clearly and vividly communicate with audiences if they had experience in combining the skills of improvisation with good message design. Alda brought improvisational exercises to classrooms at Stony Brook and to institutions around the world. As a result, the center has trained more than 20,000 scientists in nine countries.

That experience also led Alda to host the popular podcast “Clear+Vivid” with Alan

Alda, where he interviews scientists, authors, doctors, musicians, actors, and anyone who interests him and has something substantive to say. The show’s revenue also goes to the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

“It has been Heritage’s honor to work with Mr. Alda, who is, of course, an American treasure,” said Heritage Auctions’ president, Greg Rohan. “We are also delighted to donate our portion of the proceeds to The Alda Center for Communicating Science and the important work it’s doing. An enormous thank-you to Mr. Alda, and, of course, to those clients who made today such an emotional and rewarding experience.”

for that all-important message to the gang back home.

When the flap was opened, the complete exterior picture was repeated beneath it, so not a bit of scenic wonder was missing. The cover reverse featured a different illustration, usually paired with address lines and a stamp box. Originally retailing for about a quarter, with mid-century postage averaging 3 cents, travel card folios were a luxury every pocketbook could afford.

The first U.S. postcard folios, copyrighted in 1897, were produced by the Wirth Brothers. Many Wirth cards featured black-and-white visuals of notable events of the day, such as the Spanish-American War. The folios most prized by today’s collectors, however, arrived some years later. Those first came courtesy of Chicago’s Curt Teich & Co., which began churning out cards in the early 1930s. Teich popularized “linen postcards.” While not actually

made of linen, the mix of fabric and wood pulp in the card stock gave that appearance, especially after a linen-like texturing was added. Linen cards looked expensive but were actually more-cost efficient to produce.

Teich believed in brightlycolored visuals, and heavy retouching often resulted in photos that look more like paintings. Teich also pioneered the “big letter” (aka “large letter”) cover design so identified with travel postcard folios. The name of the locale is outlined in huge block letters. Inside each letter are small photos offering a tantalizing glimpse of what the attraction has to offer.

If you’re looking for a collecting hobby that doesn’t leave you empty-pocketed, postcard folios send just the right message. Hundreds are offered online, and the majority sell at $5-$10 dollars each. As with all paper goods, condition is important. These were intended for mailing; if they were, the results were often mashed edges and rubbed exterior visuals. You may also

prefer a folder free of stamps, postmarks, and scrawled addresses (although these often add to the vintage charm). Pristine examples remain readily available. These were originally purchased as mementos, rather than for mailing.

Wherever your destination, postcard folders can start you on your journey. So get going, the world awaits!
