Pride in “homegrown” artists who’ve gone on to achieve success on the national or international stage is what spurred the meteoric rise of what is termed Regionalist art. Perhaps no other part of the country has embraced the Regionalist art movement with more fervor than the Midwest, leading to the theme of Soulis Auctions’

Saturday, Oct. 14, event. The 320-lot Fine and Decorative Arts Sale is highlighted by original works created by luminaries of Midwest Regionalist and Kansas City art, including “The Big Three” of Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry and Grant Wood.

America’s heartland is where painter, muralist, printmaker and art educator Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was born and spent most of his life. He also studied in

An American ceramic masterwork, the stoneware cooler from Philadelphia, 20 gallon capacity, with profuse incised bird and flowering plant motif and brushed flowering plant motifs, is stamped “PHILADELPHIA / A D / MDCCCXXVIII” and “JK,” attributed to Henry Remmey Jr., Philadelphia, 1828. The cooler will be in Crocker Farm’s fall sale running Oct. 31 to Nov. 10.

Among the most lavishly decorated early American ceramic objects known, this extraordinary creation ranks among the masterworks of Remmey family stoneware produced in America. Imposing in its proportions, the cooler reveals Henry Remmey Jr.’s abilities as a master of his medium as both a

(American, 1889-1975) “Benton Family on South Beach” is a mixed-media study/painting on board, ca. 1922. Benton repeated the composition on a large linen panel for his wife, Rita, to embellish with needlework. The study/painting and partially stitched embroidery panel will be offered as one lot.

Birger Sandzen’s (Swedish/ American, 1871-1964) “Golden Aspens” from 1929 is an oil-oncanvas, signed and dated lower right, from the artist’s important Middle Period. It is from a rural Kansas library, acquired directly from the artist, and is numbered 2315 in the Sandzen Memorial Gallery’s card catalogue.

Paris, lived in New York City for 20 years, and summered on Martha’s Vineyard for half a century, all experiences that broadened his artistic horizons.

Benton was a champion of Realism whose initial opposition to the Modernist movement seemed untenable, but in the early 1920s, Benton reconsidered and opted to explore the new style. That sea change in Benton’s career is embodied in an associated pair of artworks in this sale as one lot. His

mixed-media painting on board, executed ca. 1922, is titled “Benton Family on South Beach.” The 13.75by-9.5-inch work served as the study for a much larger (53-by-33inch) textile which he envisioned his wife, Rita, embellishing with needlework. The linen panel was never fully stitched, thus leaving much of Benton’s original composition visible.

The study was exhibited in 199091 and published in Henry Adams’

potter and decorator. While showcasing the incised decorative treatment of his birthplace, Manhattan, in its over-the-top flowering plant bearing four birds, the cooler also displays a growing change in style throughout the Mid-Atlantic stoneware school in its exuberant brushwork on the reverse. In what has become a tradition, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will once again use the October special sales display to showcase vintage Halloween collectibles.

Scary witches, ghosts, and goblins will share space with friendlier jack o’lanterns, scarecrows, and black cats. There will be light-up ceramic pieces, candles, cardboard cutouts, and hard plastic candy containers. Vintage children’s books with Halloween

themes will share space with adult horror fiction.

While antique and vintage Halloween decorations have been avidly used and collected for many years, there has been a surge of interest more recently. Many of the over 50 dealers in the Haddon Heights Antiques Center are reporting a heightened interest at shows and sales and stockpile as much Halloween merchandise as they can over the courseof the year.

Commenting on the study and its ultimate realization in large format on linen, Adams observed, “This is clearly quite a unique and personally significant piece from a pivotal moment in Benton’s artistic development.” Both the painting and unfinished needlework come from the family of the Bentons’ close friend, Ann Constable, and will be offered as one lot with a pre-sale estimate of $60,000-$90,000. The auction also includes several 1930s large-format, low-edition lithographs signed by Benton, with estimates in the $2,000-$20,000 range, as well as a portrait by Margaret

Brisbane (American, 1901-70), which the Bentons commissioned in 1934 and, through photo-documentation, are known to have displayed in their home. It depicts Rita Benton with the couple’s young son, T.P., and is consigned by a gallery owner who acquired it directly from the Thomas Hart Benton Trust.

A signed Arthur Kraft (Kansas City, Mo., 1922-77)

WWII-era mural, measuring 5by-7 feet, is especially noteworthy because it pre-dates by several decades the period during which Kraft became widely recognized as an Expressionist. “To the best of my knowledge, this mural, which is a stark depiction, in a Realistic style, of the struggles brought on by WWII, has never before been recorded.

Because it is so early, and because it was painted in a style not previously connected to Kraft, we believe it will be of great interest not only locally but also at a national level,” said Soulis Auctions’ owner and auctioneer, Dirk Soulis.

Two landscapes by Birger Sandzen (Swedish/American, 1871-1964) that have been held in an institutional collection for 102 and 93 years, respectively, are among the sale’s top highlights. Both are listed in the Sandzen Memorial Gallery’s card catalogue and are consigned by a rural Kansas library that acquired them directly from the artist.

Sandzen viewed his paintings as “nature studies,” and, as he wrote in a letter to his brother, he strived for “the simplest possible means of expression.”

In other words, every brushstroke had meaning. His 1921 oil-on-canvas titled “Smoky River” is a quintessential example of that approach, masterfully portraying a verdant waterside scene with light and shadow in counterpoint to lush, languid trees. Like “Smoky River,” the second Sandzen oil is from the artist’s desirable Middle Period. Titled “Golden Aspens,” the 1929 depiction of aspen trees alongside a lake displays a robust palette of intense colors applied in high relief. The library’s acquisition of “Golden Aspens” was reported in the

Even In Low Grade, Superman’s 1938 Debut

Soars To Record High Selling For $408,000, Comic First With CGC 0.5 To Bring Six Figures

Heritage Auctions’ Sept. 14 to 17 Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction abounded with history, on the page and

behind the podium. Records were set throughout the nearly sold-out four-day event, which realized $13,021,591 and drew more than 5,100 bidders worldwide who competed for abundant books and works that had never before been to auction.

Nineteen of the 1,300 lots realized six-figure results, among them a low-graded copy of the most important comic book ever published that soared to a record result: “Action Comics No. 1,” the 1938 book that introduced Superman, birthed the superhero genre and ushered in the Golden Age, for starters. That’s why this issue, graded CGC PR 0.5, sold for $408,000, making it the most valuable copy of the comic in the grade. Up, up and away it went, even without its back cover, to become the first comic book with a CGC 0.5 to sell for six figures.

Several comic books set new auction records, chief among them 1945’s “Punch Comics No. 12,” the highestgraded copy in CGC’s registry.

This book is among the “world’s greatest comics,” in the estimation of Golden Age entrepreneur Harry “A” Chesler, and the bidders who fought over it, driving its price to a record $204,000.

Published one year later than Super-man’s debut on June 18, 1939, to be precise, the Alex Raymond original

Flash Gordon Sunday strip with the Jungle Jim topper sparked a bidding war that pushed its final price to $312,000. That’s second only to the $480,000 realized in March 2020 for the very first Flash Gordon newspaper strip

trains, and readers recall that I would reveal in my column what she was getting for Christmas. Ironically, she never read enough of my columns to figure out that I was telling the entire world about the O-scale GG-1 train that she got at age 12.

Many long term readers have learned a bit about my family as a result of my columns over the last 20 years. In particular, my eldest daughter, Jane, has been the target of numerous commentaries by her old man. During her early years, I talked about how we built an interest in collecting by introducing her to collecting Wade figures. Later, she was focused on toy

Well, Jane graduated this year from American University with her M.A. in Museum Studies. She went to Susquehanna University for her B.A. I was proud as punch but also worried, like parents do, about her first job. The museum world has changed a lot since I first started, and competition for jobs is fierce. So, it was with great élan that she told me that she had taken a position as a manager at Cordier Auctions in Harrisburg.

While I do not offer commercials for any businesses in my columns, I do have to say how proud I am that Jane is now in the antiques and art

business full time. Having known Dave Cordier and his family for decades (back to when he set up at Silver Springs Flea Market near Mechanicsburg), I am happy to have her working for this company.

Jane and I talked about the auction world a great deal, and I do see her as a Gen Z being the future of our profession/passion. The antiques and art market has changed tremendously in my life. The pundits who still seem happy to talk about it being dead and saying there are no collectors left must enjoy the sound of their own voices, as no one else is listening. Change in the market has brought new areas to the forefront of interest while leaving others behind. If my grandparents had invested in American Empire and Jacobean furnishings in the 1920s, they would be devastated to see the literal

pennies on the dollar for those items since the 1980s. The market has a way of finding itself around what is hot at any given moment. For the new generations, they will decide what the rising stars of the antiques world are. Jane collects things unique to her generation, film cameras and vinyl, but she also collects things unique to mine, books! This diversity is what the future of the market will be.

So, I look forward to seeing the antiques world through the eyes of my daughter as she makes her way working in the auction world. I will be curious what words of wisdom she imparts to her old man that might just find their way into a future column.

National Museum Of Asian Art Presents “Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change”

Exhibition Highlights Artist’s Engagement With Social And Economic Change Through Stunning Array Of Artworks, Several On View For First Time

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art has announced “Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change,” an exhibition that casts new light on American painter James McNeill Whistler’s longterm engagement with social and economic change. The exhibition will include an array of over 100 works from the Freer Gallery of Art’s unparalleled Whistler collection, several on view for the first time. The museum has the nation’s largest collection of works by Whistler, more than 1,000 in total, including the famed Peacock Room. Guest curated by independent scholar David Park Curry, “Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change,” a project of the Lunder Consortium for Whistler Studies, will be displayed in the National Museum of Asian Art’s Freer Gallery of Art from Saturday, Nov. 18, through May 4, 2024.

Alongside Whistler’s splendid interior, the Peacock Room, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see rare etchings, pastels and watercolors that tell the story of social and economic revolution in 19th-century European cities. Whistler’s shopfront images are often smallscale depictions of workingclass residents performing trades that would soon disappear from urban landscapes thanks to the rise of department stores and large-scale commercial shopping areas. This exhibition illustrates how such images of small-scale production catered to a middle-class clientele eager to embrace nostalgic views at a moment of tremendous social upheaval.

Many of the changes Whistler observed, from the demise of small-scale businesses to the expulsion of poor and working-class communities from urban centers, are as present now

in cities as they were in Whistler’s time.

“Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change” is part of the National Museum of Asian Art’s “Journeys,” a series of events and exhibitions produced during the museum’s centennial year. “Journeys” projects deepen and broaden the museum’s impact through global and local engagement. “Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change” adds to this effort through a programmatic partnership with several members of the nearby Anacostia neighborhood, including the 11th Street Bridge Park Project, an elevated public space that will connect neighborhoods in Washington separated by the Anacostia River.

“James McNeill Whistler is an integral part of our museum’s history,” said Chase F. Robinson, the museum’s director. “We’re pleased to showcase his artistry during our landmark centennial year and consider modern-day issues through the lens of his

In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. works. In our second century, we are transforming the National Museum of Asian Art into a space that welcomes a wide range of visitors to convene, learn and interact with Asian art and cultures and the art of the United States.”

Whistler had a profound influence on museum founder Charles Lang Freer, a Detroit businessman who began collecting works by living American artists in the 1880s. In 1890, he met Whistler, an influential artist who collected Chinese and Japanese works of art and adapted Asian aesthetics into his own artistic vocabulary. The two men established a long and fruitful friendship, and Freer came to share Whistler’s belief that the history of art was a “story of the beautiful” that transcended time and place.

Following the artist’s advice, Freer began acquiring Asian art. Eventually, he amassed a stunning array of both American and Asian

Doylestown Arts Festival Dodges Storms, Delivers A Weekend Of Art, Music, And Community

Two-Day Festival Welcomed Thousands Of Locals And Visitors To Historic Doylestown, Pa.

The Doylestown Arts Festival celebrated its 32nd anniversary on Sept. 9 and 10. Despite forecasts for heavy storms, thousands made their way to the free-to-attend street festival, while the weather held out just long enough for the highly anticipated event to take place.

The weekend-long festival brought visitors from near and far while supporting over 150 independent artists and dozens of musicians and local businesses. The event once again spanned across downtown Doylestown, lining State Street, Main Street, Oakland Avenue, Hamilton Street, and adjacent parking lots with art, music, and activities. Throughout the event, countless moments of collaboration, friendship, and kindness helped to facilitate an environment of positivity and a space where everyone could come and enjoy the celebration of creativity.

“Thank you to everyone

who puts a whole lotta heart and energy out to create one of the absolute best opportunities for independent artists and makers to connect with (the) community,” said Tari Zarka, a local glass artist.

For many of the participating artists and local businesses, the festival was a massive success. Early reports indicate that sales were once again strong, showing that largescale events can have major and long-lasting economic benefits to the community. In addition, the festival featured a range of local cultural destinations and arts organizations, helping to raise awareness and strengthen their position in the region.

“Doylestown, you never disappoint. Thanks for showing up with your friends, your families, your dogs, your kiddos, and your interest in supporting artists from a wide range of disciplines,” said Jan Powers, one of this year’s artists.

The all-volunteer organizers and committee responsible for the festival worked for over 10 months to carefully plan and execute the annual tradition, which is made free to the public in partnership with Discover Doylestown, The Borough of Doylestown, and dozens of local businesses, organizations, and residents.

Behind the scenes of the festival, over 130 volunteers worked from before dawn until well after the crowds had

gone home to make sure the event ran smoothly.

“We remain in awe of this community and their seemingly tireless support of the local and regional art, music, and cultural scene. We took a gamble on the weather and we were rewarded with an incredible weekend of creativity and connection,” said Paul Boger, who directs the event with his wife, Kris Boger, in a volunteer capacity each year.

Mead And Sons Auctioneers Announce Autumn Spectacular

Sale For Oct. 19

Weitsman Collection Stoneware To Be Among Featured Items In Auction

Since resuming their live auction service in February of this year, Mead and Sons Auctioneers of Owego, N.Y., have served over 70 consignors. Each of these consignments have contained someinteresting and wonderful items. “We have assembled over 150 lots, from various consignors, in catalogued order, to be sold on Thursday, Oct. 19,” said Jim Mead. “We are especially proud to have been contacted by our friend and neighbor, Adam Weitsman, to offer five pieces of stoneware from his well-known collection. All proceeds from the sale of the Weitsman consignment will benefit the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club. Mead and Sons is also glad to donate our services for this worthy cause, which the Weitsman family has supported for decades,” followed Mead.

“Autumn Spectacular may sound like a boast,” continued Mead. “Yet, if you look closely

on AuctionZip you will see that we have assembled a remarkable collection of items. Authentic military, general store, toys and pedal vehicles, Native American and Western as well as political items. Quality advertising is also present, featuring tobacco, petroleum, and popular culture items. Of special interest is a fully restored 1920 Chelsea brass ship’s bell clock, striking eight bells.” Other items include a 10-inch cylinder Swiss music box, a 19th-century corner cupboard, primitive dry sinks, a Hoosier cabinet, a Mission hall tree, and a copper-sheathed cupola.

This Autumn Spectacular auction of 150-plus lots will be held Thursday evening, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. in the auction gallery at the Early Owego Antique Center at 43-45 Lake Street, Owego, N.Y.

“This was one of my favorite pieces of art in the auction,” stated Heritage Executive Vice President Todd Hignite. “Not only has it never been on the market, but it’s pretty much perfect in every way.” Hence, its near-record result.

This event was filled with auction newcomers, including Fred Ray and Jerry Robinson’s original “Detective Comics No.

58” cover, published in December 1941. Not only is this a landmark Batman and Robin work, but this was also the issue that introduced The Penguin, which is why it realized $270,000.

Another rare survivor from DC Comics’ Golden Age, Mort Meskin’s original cover for 1941’s “Leading Comics No. 1,” featuring the Seven Soldiers of Victory, sold for $150,000.

And speaking of “Star Wars,” Rick Hoberg and Dave Cockrum’s original cover of 1977’s “Star Wars No. 5” was another auction newcomer. The Force was strong with this artwork that graced the cover of the penultimate issue of Marvel Comics’ adaptation of Lucas’ film, which was written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Howard Chaykin. This issue, featuring the story “Lo, the

Mead

Moons of Yavin!” was published on Aug. 10, 1977, just 77 days after Lucas gave audiences a new hope for sci-fi on the big screen. Forty-six years later, the cover realized $102,000.

Jim Starlin, Al Milgrom and John Romita Sr.’s original cover for “Captain Marvel No. 31,” published in 1974, was among the auction’s smash hits, which was no surprise given its star-studded cover featuring, among others, Black Panther, Captain America, Thor, Vision, Iron Man and Drax. This landmark work signed by the art team realized $180,000.

Not surprisingly, Barry

Windsor-Smith’s original cover for “Conan the Barbarian No. 11,” published by Marvel in 1971, sparked a tussle among bidders during the four-day event’s first session. The striking work from the beloved creator realized $102,000.

But all that soared in this sale wasn’t dressed in Spandex or a loincloth: Carl Barks’ first commissioned Donald Duck oil painting came in 1971; two years later, he painted “Green Persia,” which realized $102,000. That, too, was certainly something to quack about.

Exhibition Reveals Picasso’s Little-Known Commission For Brooklyn Residence Of Hamilton Easter Field

Focused Exhibition Brings Together For The First Time Six Paintings Linked To The Commission

The Met has recently opened “Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn,” the first exhibition dedicated to a captivating but lesser-known chapter in the Cubist period of Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). In 1910, while making radical formal experiments with the human figure that brought him to the brink of abstraction, the artist embarked on a decorative commission for the Brooklyn residence of artist, collector, and critic Hamilton Easter Field (1873–1922). While the commission ultimately went unrealized, it served as a catalyst for Picasso’s exploration of Cubism, as he worked, abandoned, and reworked the panels in various studios in France. In this focused exhibition, six paintings linked to the commission, a group of figure and still life compositions, will be brought together for the first time, along with related works and archival material. It provides a unique opportunity to view these canvases together in the same gallery and to consider them in relation to the architectural space for which they were originally intended.

“Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn” and the accompanying publication are made possible by the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art.

“As the first-ever exhibition to focus on Picasso’s commission for Hamilton Easter Field, this show will uncover an important chapter in Picasso’s radical Cubist idiom and afford us a fresh angle on the artist’s transcendent work,” said Max Hollein, the museum’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO. “The Met is uniquely positioned to present revelatory projects such as this because of the innovative research produced

at the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, our vibrant hub for scholarship on modern art in general and Cubism in particular, now in its 10th year of existence.”

Picasso and Field met in Paris through a mutual friend in fall 1909, an encounter that prompted Field to offer the 28-year-old Spaniard a room in his Brooklyn Heights home, the library, to adorn with murals. The commission presented Picasso his first opportunity to move beyond easel painting and apply his radical Cubist style to decorative painting formats of challenging size and proportion.

According to artist Robert Laurent (1890–1970), the elated Picasso proclaimed that “it was just the sort of commission he had been hoping for.”

In August the following year, Picasso received Field’s formal brief with exact details of the long and narrow room, approximately 10-by-23 feet, in which up to 11 panels were to be installed, as well as a guarantee of artistic autonomy: “I give you compete freedom,” Field declared. In 1919, a decade after meeting Picasso in Paris, Field wrote about that encounter in one of his regular art columns for his hometown newspaper, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, remarking that the decorations were not yet finished. Field died two years later, at age 49, never having seen any of Picasso’s panels for his home library. The Field residence was demolished around 1947.

No painting by Picasso was ever linked to the commission during the artist’s lifetime. Only the discovery of a sole 1910 letter from Field, preserved in Picasso’s personal archives some 15 years after the artist’s death,

allowed Picasso experts to reassess some of his unusually sized and proportioned Cubist paintings. A comparison with the dimensions of the room’s individual wall areas outlined in Field’s letter yielded several exact or near matches, prompting speculations as to how far Picasso took the project and why it remained unrealized. Field’s seemingly hands-off approach and Picasso’s difficulty in maintaining formal unity across various formats,

some unusually large and others unusually narrow, were put forth as the likely impediments.

With new research on Field, Picasso, and the proposed installation site, “Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn” will expand beyond the initial art historical accounts of the commission and closely consider how the artist engaged with the challenge of creating a decorative ensemble. The exhibition will unfold across

The Met’s Gallery 830 in four parts. The core will be devoted to six paintings associated with the commission itself.

Included will be two of Picasso’s abstract Cubist figurative works of 1910, the narrow, nearly six-foot-tall “Nude Woman” from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the even more enigmatic “Reclining Woman on a Sofa,” a loan from a private collection. The latter represents a rare subject for Picasso’s

Cubism. Oblong and horizontal, it was also the first of three overdoor panels Picasso created for the Field library. Two equally sized still lifes begun in summer 1911 in Céret and identified as the commission’s remaining two overdoors. The Met’s own “Pipe Rack and Still Life on a Table” and “Still Life on a Piano,”a loan from the Museum Berggruen, will be installed side-by-side for the first time. The section will also

present two canvases generously lent by the Musée national Picasso-Paris, “Man with a Guitar” and “Man with a Mandolin.” The artist enlarged both with canvas that he added along the bottom edge, nearly doubling their length. These two imposing paintings attest to a shift in interest in the size and proportion for Cubist compositions.

The exhibition then focuses on Field and his Brooklyn residence, featuring Field’s 1910 commissioning letter, the key textual evidence of the project. Illustrated with Field’s renderings of a wall elevation and the plan of the room allocated to Picasso, it will allow visitors to gain a sense of the architectural site. Furthering this objective is the inclusion of a decorative wooden panel executed for the Field residence by Laurent in 1913 that features floor plans of the

“Morgan’s Bibles: Splendor In Scripture”

The Bible is a cornerstone of religion, art, and literature in the western world. Few books can demonstrate the power of the printed word as vividly as scripture, a bedrock of faith, an object of veneration, a formative influence on language and culture. For Pierpont Morgan, it represented a magnificent opportunity to express his religious convictions through his collecting interests in archaeological artifacts, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books, decorative arts, and master drawings.

This exhibition, “Morgan’s Bibles: Splendor in Scripture, includes masterpieces in each of these mediums, including a cuneiform tablet with the deluge story, the earliest surviving first five verses of the Septuagint Genesis, the Lindau Gospels treasure binding, the Golden Gospels of Henry VIII, the Gutenberg Bible, Rubens drawings, and Rembrandt prints.

Viewed as an ensemble, Morgan’s collection was an inspirational accomplishment predicated on the historical importance and artistic excellence of his books. On view from Friday, Oct. 20, through Jan. 21, 2024, “Morgan’s Bibles: Splendor in Scripture” is made possible by the Johansson Family Foundation, the Lucy

pen-and-ink drawings from the summer of 1910, including one from the Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection, now part of The Met’s holdings, as well as a unique oil sketch on loan from the Fundación

Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte.

The exhibition concludes by contextualizing the Field commission within Picasso’s wider presence in New York in the early decades of the 20th century, namely the artist’s first exhibition in the United States at Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery, 291, in spring 1911. It will feature the only two drawings sold at this landmark event, both representing a female figure: the large 1910 charcoal Cubist drawing acquired by Stieglitz, now in The Met collection, as well as a 1905–06 pen-and-ink sheet purchased by Field, a loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The exhibit is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with a chronology of

the commission and an essay by Jozefacka that situates the Field commission within the rich European decorative painting tradition, offering thus-far unconsidered points of reference for Picasso’s Cubism.

“Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn” is the second in a series of focused research exhibitions. The Met is grateful to the many lenders for their exceptional generosity, with special acknowledgment to the Musée national Picasso-Paris.

This exhibition is a participant in the international Celebration Picasso 1973–2023, which marks the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.

The Artistry Of Basketmaker John Long

An Exceptional Craftsman, Gone Too Soon

John G. Long of Slatington, Lehigh County, Pa., was a skilled basketmaker specializing in split-oak baskets in the Pennsylvania German tradition. Family, friends, collectors, and folklorists lost this premier talent when Long took his own life 21 years ago at the age of 59.

Thanks to historian and author Richard Shaner, Long’s work has not gone unrecognized in print. Shaner wrote a retrospective honoring Long in the “Historical Review of Berks County,” Summer 2003 issue, Vol. 68, No. 3.

John Long learned the traditional craft and art of basketmaking from his grandmother’s brother, Henry Smith, a farmer near Emerald in the Lehigh Valley (north of Bethlehem). During the winters, in order to supplement off-season income outside the growing season, Smith made split oak baskets from local white oak he cut down. At a young age, Long studied under Smith to learn the craft. In the beginning, he made large melon-shaped utilitarian potato baskets. The region has a long agricultural history of growing potatoes.

Long had a successful business in this revival art. Most of his work bears his signature written in ink under the rim handle. Both Long and Smith used an “X” style weaving technique at the handle base. Upon securing the circular rim to the handle hoop, an “X” design outside the handle on each side was framed with a crisscross. Extra ribs reinforced the handle juncture.

Like many craftspeople working in traditional methods, Long was a fan of the famous “Foxfire” book series founded by Eliot Wigginton. More than a series of books, “Foxfire” was an outgrowth of the back-to-the-land movement, and the series is still considered sacred to anyone interested in Appalachian

studies, folklife, and experiential education.

Long demonstrated his revivialist craft at the Kutztown Folk Festivals and at fairs held at the Jacob Keim Homestead, among other places. He was fluent in the Pennsylvania German dialect and typically brought his shaving bench to craft fairs to work and demonstrate. His woven handled miniature buttocks baskets, some the size to hold an acorn, are of a mastercraftmanship caliber. It was in the fall of 2002 when Long passed away. A bachelor, Long’s estate was settled at a two-day auction held at the Emmaus Fire Company Hall. Well-attended by collectors, about 250 of his baskets were sold. Some brought around $300, the majority around $100 each.

The author is always interested in seeing different John Long baskets. He can be
