Emmanuel (Manuel) Ferree was born in 1753, the son of Jacob Ferree and Barbara Carpenter. He shows up in the local tax records of Lancaster County in 1776 along with Joel, Jacob, and Isaac. Surviving records show that he worked for the Committee of Safety at various times between 1776 and 1783.

The barrel length of the original British pistols was initially 16 inches, but by the time of the American Revolution, the barrel length had been shortened to 9 inches by both the British and the Americans. These pistols were carried in pairs in leather holsters slung over the horse’s withers in front of the saddle of the mounted troop.

This newly acquired pistol signed “M. Ferre” was made by Lancaster gunsmith Manuel Ferree. It is currently the only known Revolutionary War Light Dragoon pistol that is signed by a Pennsylvania gunsmith. The

During the American Revolution, he also served for a short time as a lieutenant in the Fourth Company of the 9th Battalion of the State Militia. After the conflict, he married Mary Gibboney and is listed in the first national census in 1790 as a resident of Strasburg, Leacock Township. In 1795, Manuel and Mary purchased a 400-acre farm in Jefferson County, Ky. Early in 1803, they signed an indenture to support the purchase of this land. Manuel Ferree died

During the American Revolution, Edward Hand (17441802) was adjutant general to George Washington. His home is located at Historic Rock Ford, comprised of 33 acres at the southeastern edge of Lancaster City, surrounded by Lancaster County Central Park. It offers guided tours of the elegantly furnished rooms of the ca. 1794 Hand Mansion as well as the opportunity to visit the John J.Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts, which is housed in a re-constructed 18th-century bank barn. Visitors to the Snyder Gallery will also have the opportunity to see other rare and historic firearms that are currently on display for a limited time, including long rifles made by Lancaster craftsmen Andreas Albrecht, Peter Resor and Jacob Metzger. Also on display is a pistol made by J.P. Beck, currently on loan from the Historical Society of Dauphin County.

“The Magnificent Seven” Magnificent Memories And Memorabilia

There’s nothing like a good western. In 1960, United Artists released one of the all-time classics in the genre. Titled “The Magnificent Seven,” the production proved to be nothing short of “magnificent,” featuring an all-star cast, a memorable music score and plenty of action that wowed movie audiences of the day.

Although now over six decades old, “The Magnificent Seven” hasn’t lost its luster. The film remains one of Hollywood’s more popular westerns, with

eager fans and collectors scooping up any and all memorabilia associated with the film.

“The Magnificent Seven” is actually based on another movie, Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese film “Seven Samurai.” United Artists simply updated the Japanese entry, shifting the locale from 16th century Japan to the 19th century American Southwest.

“The Magnificent Seven” was produced and directed for the Mirisch Company and Alpha Productions by John Sturgis. Writing the screenplay was William Roberts with

uncredited assistance from Walter Bernstein and Walter Newman. Serving as cinematographer was Charles Lang with Ferris Webster as film editor. Providing the music score, which included the film’s stirring title theme (later used in Marlboro cigarette commercials), was Elmer Bernstein.

Playing the seven gunslingers in the film were Yul Brynner (Chris Adams), Steve McQueen (Vin Tanner), Horst Buchholz (Chico), Charles Bronson (Bernardo O’Reilly), Robert Vaughn (Lee), Brad Dexter (Harry Luck) and James Coburn (Britt). Appearing as the grizzled, menacing bandit chief Calvera was Eli Wallach.

Budgeted at an estimated $2 million, “The Magnificent Seven” was shot on location in Mexico. One of the first orders of business was the construction of the Mexican village and the American border town. There was some tension on the set, most notably a rivalry between Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. The brash McQueen, who had been starring in the TV western series “Wanted Dead or Alive” (195861), routinely tried to upstage Brynner, flipping a coin during one of Brynner’s speeches, rattling shotgun shells and kicking away the mounds of dirt the 5-feet, 8-inch Brynner had built up in order to make himself look taller.

“The Magnificent Seven” had a rather simple plot. A Mexican bandit named Calvera has chosen a poor Mexican village as his own

fiefdom, conducting periodic raids where he and his men relieve the villagers of food and supplies. When a villager is killed during a raid, the elders decide that they have had enough and journey north to a U.S. border town where they attempt to buy weapons. Here they meet Cajun gunfighter Chris Adams, who suggests that the villagers hire American gunmen instead to rid their town of Calvera. Although he can only offer meager pay for their services, Chris eventually signs on six other American gunfighters and heads south, where he and his hired guns prepare to take on the murderous Calvera and his bandidos.

“The Magnificent Seven” was released on Oct. 12, 1960, where it eventually became both a critical and financial success. Variety, the Hollywood trade paper, called the film “a rip-roaring, rootin’ tootin’ western with lots of bite and tang and old-fashioned abandon.”

“The Magnificent Seven” generated three move

sequels: “Return of the Seven” (1966), “Guns of the Magnificent Seven” (1969) and “The Magnificent Seven Ride!” (1972), plus a movie remake, “The Magnificent Seven” (2016), with Denzel Washington as the leader of the seven. In addition, “The Magnificent Seven” TV series ran on CBS from 1998 to 2000 with Michael Biehn in the leading role.

“The Magnificent Seven,” which earned one Oscar nomination, Elmer Bernstein, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Ernest Gold won for “Exodus” that year), still commands quite a following among collectors. Leading the way is the film’s standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41 inches), whose simple blurb declares, “The Magnificent One!” One restored example in very fine condition on linen sold at auction for $657.25.

Always high on any collector’s list is the eight-card lobby set, whose 11-by-14-inch color cards feature various scenes from the movie. One set in fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $388.38 at auction. For those collectors with the display space, the film’s giant six-sheet poster (80-by-81 inches) constitutes a monster piece of cinema memorabilia. Printed in four sections, the six-sheet poster is quite attractive when assembled, with one example in folded very fine condition bringing a modest $131.45 at auction. On a smaller scale is the film’s insert poster (14-by36 inches). One example in very fine- condition sold at auction for $262.90. The movie’s half-sheet style B poster (22-by-28 inches) is an attractive piece. One example in folded fine/very fine condition realized a top bid of $204 at auction.

Foreign movie posters for “The Magnificent Seven” can be very desirable, often featuring different artwork than their American counterparts. One excellent example is the

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Condition, Condition, Condition

In my last column, we were talking about how much damage and wear is really a factor in determining value on an item. It is a hard question for sure, and I have certainly made mistakes back when I was dealing in antiques and purchased something that I thought had minimal repairs but then sat begging for years in the hopes of a customer.

Obviously, there is a definite line that is drawn about condition between wear and alterations that are intended to fool someone. Such shenanigans definitely can affect the value

of an item since no one wants an antique whose condition has been messed with in order to deceive. In saying this, I recently followed an online exchange about a military uniform. To set the stage, a collector of militaria had recently acquired a uniform of a distinguished veteran who had passed away. The item was purchased directly from the family without any middle man. In uniform collecting, original condition without alteration or undue wear (and that is subjective) is critical. So the collector wrote in the online forum about how a number of the pieces of insignia on the uniform did not appear to belong with it. He had gone online and found the man’s military service record and noted that the medals and badges on the tunic did not align with what he found out. That begs the questions: (A) Did the family mess with it to defraud him? (B) Did the original owner do this and why? The conclusion that

he came to was that the veteran did it for his own personal reasons that he then took to the grave. Now what does the collector do when he goes to sell the uniform someday?

Restore it to being original or keep it as it is, a reflection of perhaps the idiosyncratic perspective of the original owner?

As you can see by all of this, it really is a complicated question. I have purchased things that are broken, chipped, cracked and dented and have no regrets. And I have purchased pieces that I now hate because they are in less than perfect condition. It is the mental paranoia that I think all of us have as collectors that leads us to denigrate our own collections at times, especially when we see another collection where things are in better shape, at least to our eyes.

So while I will still always look for the best possible condition, I will also keep in mind whether the rarity or desirability of

the piece (and these are not always the same thing) makes such concerns less and less important. It is part of the amazing mind game of the antiques and collectibles world.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Summer Blockbuster: Three-Day Hollywood/Entertainment Signature Auction Surpasses $8.29 Million “Master Of Disaster” Irwin Allen Steals The Show As Original Artwork For “The Towering Inferno” Catches Fire At $350,000

One of the biggest hits of 1974 was again one of the biggest hits of 2023. John Berkey’s original artwork for “The Towering Inferno’s” poster sold for $350,000 during Heritage Auctions’

$8.29 million Hollywood/ Entertainment Signature Auction held July 27, 28, and 29. The movie boasted one of cinema’s all-time great casts, including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire and Jennifer Jones in her final role. Yet none of those legendary faces appears in the action-packed artwork, which puts front and center the true star of the show: the 138-story glass tower engulfed in flames.

“Make it bigger” was the mantra of the film’s producer, Irwin Allen, when referring to his escapist sci-fi adventures and star-studded disaster epics. The socalled “Master of Disaster” proved he’s still capable of that very thing more than three decades after his passing.

The sale attracted nearly 2,500 bidders worldwide who vied for treasures from galaxies far, far away; disasters much closer to home; British secret agents with

licenses to kill and the costume designer who made gowns fit for a princess.

“The interest in and passion for entertainment memorabilia only continues

“Between Showers,” estimated at $50,000-$75,000. The artist gifted this painting to a school in Kansas, which many years later sold it at auction, when Wright acquired it. Also coming out of his estate are a number of fine table lamps, including a Tiffany Studios “Daffodil” lamp (est. $40,000-$60,000), ca. 1910; a Duffner & Kimberly Art Nouveau style lamp (est. $8,000-$12,000), ca. 1905; and a Handel “Birds of Paradise” lamp (est. $5,000-$7,500), ca. 1915.

Fontaine’s always has fine examples of antique lighting, especially by Tiffany Studios, and this sale is no exception, featuring a Tiffany Studios “Curtain Border” floor lamp (est. $50,000-

$75,000) hailing from a Baltimore, Md., collection. This ca. 1910 lamp, standing 79 inches tall, has a 24.5-inch diameter shade impressed “Tiffany Studios, New York, 1515,” while the base is impressed “Tiffany Studios, New York, 376.” Another Tiffany Studios standout is a ca. 1905 “Banded Dogwood” table lamp (est. $40,000$60,000) having a tripod base and standing 32.5 inches tall with a 20.5-inch diameter shade. There are over 75 items in this auction carrying the Tiffany name, including 40 Tiffany Studios lamps.

Jewelry, fine silver and watch offerings here have been attracting quite a robust following in recent auctions, and highlighting the jewelry category is an 18carat white gold, pink sapphire and diamond jewelry

suite (est. $15,000-$25,000) having nearly 30 carats of princess-cut and faceted sapphires and over 15 carats of round brilliant diamonds. Fine silver includes 85 items and will feature a Georg Jensen 122-piece “Acorn” flatware set (est. $8,000$12,000), a Tiffany & Co. reticulated centerpiece (est. $6,000-$8,000) weighing 130 troy ounces, and a pair of fine J.E. Caldwell & Co. vegetable dishes (est. $3,000$5,000) weighing 97 troy ounces. Watch offerings continue to be substantial with over 10 Rolex wristwatches, featuring an 18-carat gold Day-Date President, reference 1803, ca. 1973.

Rounding out the first day are a Gustav Stickley curly maple vanity (est. $15,000-$25,000), designed by Harvey Ellis and produced ca. 1912, boasting inlays of pewter, fruitwood and ebony,

signed with the firm’s joiner’s compass decal, and a rare Black Forest carved wood figural umbrella stand (est. $10,000-$15,000) in the form of two cats on branchform supports above two dogs, each with glass eyes.

Sculpture offerings continue in the second session with a Mathurin Moreau (French, 1822-1912) bronze sculpture of a seated woman holding a book (est. $1,200$1,500). This session has a little bit of everything for most collectors’ interest, including gold jewelry, Weller pottery, porcelain, Tiffany Studios desk sets and more.

This rare Black Forest carved figural dog and cat umbrella stand (est. $10,000-$15,000) dates to the 19th century. An expected auction standout is this Birger Sandzén (American/Swedish, 1871-1954) painting, “Between Showers,” (est. $50,000-$75,000), which the artist gifted to a Kansas school district. When the schools sold the painting at auction many years later, Harold F. Wright purchased it.

New Fun Field Record Set During Corvettes At Carlisle

Annual Corvette Gathering Topped Last Year’s Previous High Mark

It’s been a record-setting year for Carlisle Events and its internationally recognized car shows, and that trend continued for the third consecutive event. Before the gates opened on day two of Corvettes at Carlisle (Aug. 24 to 26), the annual gathering of America’s sports car set an all-new Fun Field record. Last year the new standard was 2,924, and for 2023, it was easily shattered by the close of

this year’s Corvettes at Carlisle. The new record Fun Field total of 3,080 was set, thus making this the firstever Corvettes at Carlisle with more than 3,000 registered show vehicles. Mix that in with another 2,000-plus Corvette owners who simply paid to park and bought an admission ticket, and there were 5,000-plus Corvettes together on the Carlisle, Pa., fairgrounds.

With special indoor and tent displays in place, droves of Corvettes streamed on grounds in a seemingly nonstop manner. Displays focused on 1973 Corvettes, and Chip’s Choice honored some significant Corvettes that have raced at the famed Le Mans endurance race in France. This included two of the three 1960 Cunningham Corvettes, plus a trio of Callaway Cars, an L88, and more. For the Callaway entries, this was their first time ever being shown in the same place at the same time.

Along with the Le Mans cars, the draw was the Corvette American Flag, when 150 Corvettes came together to form the flag, with a special chat session at the stage focused on Vettes for Vets. Hosted by Jason Dores, this session helped educatethe Carlisle masses on how they can help our national heroes. It was a fitting and serious talk, while also showcasing the elegance of both the Corvette and the flag.

In addition to the 50-year 1973 Showcase and Chip’s Choice, displays also included the NCRS Gallery and NCCC Judged Concours too. Here, some of the best Corvettes in the world were on display and welcomed thousands of showgoers past them to review, admire, and appreciate.

Competitions were also a big part of the show, including People’s Choice/Best of Show presented by Aerolarri Wheels, King of the X autocross presented by Lingenfelter Performance, a rolling exhaust contest, and some club contests for both the largest and coolest club with support from Hemmings Marketplace.

Corvettes at Carlisle also

hosted some charity elements by way of the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). At the annual benefit dinner, nearly $45,000 was raised by way of donations, door prizes, and raffles. In addition, via a partnership with the Lancaster County Corvette Club, a 2023 2LT Corvette C8 was awarded. Dollars raised from that giveaway supported both the CMAF and Clare House.

It all wrapped up with an awards presentation at the stage for contest winners, followed by the onsite awards parade. From there, nearly 500 Corvettes roared off the grounds and into the community as part of the Downtown Carlisle

Corvette Parade and Street Party.

While Corvettes at Carlisle has concluded for 2023, plans are ongoing for the 2024 event. The showcase returns next Aug. 22 to 24 and will feature a 50th

anniversary of 1974 Corvettes, NCCC 7-Sanctions judging, the NCRS Gallery and a TBA Chip’s Choice display. Registration is now open, and complete info will be forthcoming online at www.CarlisleEvents.com.

“What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute Understanding The Antiques And Collectibles Pecking Order

and collectibles chain or pecking order, until it finally reaches the ultimate retail buyer.

This type of exchange used to be common when farm and regular house sales took place every Saturday and dealers would take their purchases the following day to the various markets in Adamstown to sell.

What a great business we’re in.

What’s it worth?

Here’s a concept that’s not often discussed: the antiques and collectible pecking order. What I mean is that there are different levels within the trade, and it’s sometimes interesting to watch an item move from one level to the other and how “value” changes at each level.

This is a truestory and a good example of what I mean. Some years ago my friend purchased an antique country wooden bucket in original blue milk-based paint at a garage sale for $1 (level one). We met the next day at a flea market where we were both set up, and he sold it to me for $10 (level two). It was a fair price, and I had no intention of selling it. My plan was to take it home and add it to my collections. Temporarily, I placed it in my

van. The next thing I knew, another dealer who happened to be shopping the flea market saw the bucket and asked its price. I said it wasn’t for sale. Before long, the offer was $200, and I couldn’t say no any longer. I accepted the $200 and split it with my friend. I later learned that the new owner was a high-end antiques dealer. He took it to an antiques show (level three) where he was exhibiting that weekend, and I heard through the grapevine that he sold it for $500 to an advanced collector (level four).

The point of this vignette is that something purchased for $1 at a garage sale on a Saturday morning traded hands several times, subsequently selling for $10, then $200, and finally for $500, all the next day. This illustrates the way merchandise can move through the antiques

Eventually almost every collector reaches the point where they decide to sell their collections. Age, health, death, divorce, declining interest, a pending move or downsizing, debt or financial obligations can motivate individuals to sell. There’s a lot of great merchandise coming back into the marketplace today, with even more returning in the coming years. This is great news if you’re a collector because, with fluctuating prices and fresh merchandise, there probably hasn’t been a better time to collect over the past generation.

him of his last happy childhood memory while uttering, “Rosebud.” This rare, tangible survivor from one of the most evocative scenes from one of the most significant American films ever made realized $187,500. No less beloved is the turquoise-and-green dress Julie Andrews wore in “The Sound of Music” as Maria returns from the

abbey and reunites with the Von Trapp children as they’re reprising “My Favorite Things.” This dress, among those once in the famous collection of Debbie Reynolds, bears a 20th Century Fox tag noting its use by “J. Andrews” and sold for $87,500. That’s the same amount the Munchkin coroner hat Meinhardt Raabe wore in “The Wizard of Oz” realized. An equally rare

survivor from the beloved film, an Emerald City jacket with Munchkin soldier pants, followed the Yellow

Brick Road to its new owner for $75,000.

The archives of film title designer Maurice Binder,

best known for setting the tone and tenor for the James Bond franchise, brought a license to thrill to this three-day event. Nearly every lot from the Binder collection sparked a bidding war, chief among them the opening “Gun Barrel” title sequence for 1962’s “Dr. No,” which set the standard for every Bond film. The “Dr. No” storyboards hit the bull’s eye when they realized $106,250.

Head rendering: Grace Kelly’s gold ball gown costume from “To Catch a Thief,” which realized $40,000, a price worthy of a princess.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Atlantean sword from 1984’s “Conan the Destroyer,” obtained from the film’s stunt coordinator, sold for $118,750.

The foot-long, almost-foot-wide model miniature X-wing Rebel Alliance starfighter used in 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back,” good ol’ “Red Five,” realized $218,750. This very ship transported Luke Skywalker from Hoth to Dagobah (for his training with Yoda) to Lando Calrissian’s Cloud City. Per Academy Award-winning visual effects artist Brian Johnson, the model was made at Industrial Light and Magic and “used on a number of multi-element motion control shots.”

And decades after her Hollywood reign, Edith Head remains the most lauded costume designer in history. Several costume sketches from the eight-time Academy Award-winner exceeded their pre-auction estimates, among them a new record-setter for any

The French grande poster (47-by-62 inches) is another foreign beauty. Titled “Les Mercenaires,” one example in folded very fine- condition sold at auction for $77. The Belgian poster (14-by-21 inches) is yet another eye pleaser. One example, titled “Les Sept Mercenaires,” in rolled near mint+ condition brought a top bid of $47 at auction. The British quad poster (30-by-40 inches), which features the stirring blurb, “They fought like seven hundred…,” is sure to attract collector interest. One example in very fine condition sold at auction for $418.25. Various Japanese posters are also
